SEASON 2023 - July 1
Excitement builds for the return of the Big V
One of the most anticipated occasions on the VAFA calendar is the return of Representative Football to Elsternwick Park on Saturday 15th July. For the first time since 2019, the best amateur players will don the famous Big V against a formidable foe in the Perth Football League.
The Senior Women’s game will kick off the day’s events at 11am, with our team aiming to extend their unbeaten run of victories to four.
The Senior Men’s game will follow at 2pm, where the team will be keen to build on the rich history of 140 wins from 172 games, at an impressive winning rate of 81%.
Our opponents, the Perth Football League, are not to be underrated. Formerly the WA Amateurs, they are the only community football competition in Perth, with a similar number of clubs, teams and players as the VAFA. This is the first time our women will face off against WA, the only other contest against an interstate rival being in 2018 when victory was secured over the Adelaide Football League.
The Senior Men’s team last played WA back in 2003, delivering a comprehensive victory when stacked with many ex-AFL players. However, the agreed criteria for players required to have played a minimum of 5 games in the 2023 season, ensures these games will be played by legitimate Amateur representatives, and will no doubt deliver two cracking contests between the two biggest community football competitions in Australia.
We are thrilled to have secured two experienced and successful coaches to lead our teams.
Greg Hutchison takes the reins of the men’s side, bringing a lifetime of knowledge and skills to the role, having coached at the elite AFL and VFL levels, and leading Old Brighton to the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final in 2022.
Similarly, our Women’s coach, Paul Groves, is a Big V representative himself from his playing days at St Bede’s/Mentone Tigers, has tasted success at the highest level, having led the Western Bulldogs to the 2018 AFLW Premiership. Both coaches have shown wonderful passion for, and commitment to the role, and there’s no doubt our players will be well prepared for the occasion.
Jason ReddickCEOTo the players, our great congratulations on your selection in the initial training squads.
To be in the squad of 50 players from a player registration base of over 12,000, puts you in the top echelon in the competition.
For those who don’t make the final cut, I hope the experience of being in the training programme is a positive one and drives your ambitions to want to be involved again next year and beyond.
For those 44 players who are selected to wear the Big V this year, I hope you do so with great pride and enjoyment. Presentation of Big V guernseys will be made at our annual ‘Big V Luncheon’ being held at the RACV Club on Friday 14th July. This will be a special occasion for all our Men’s and Women’s representatives, and I encourage all family, friends, teammates and supporters to book a ticket.
AFL CEO in waiting, and former Big V representative, Andrew Dillon, will be our special guest as we induct Mark Brady (Old Scotch and St Kevin’s Old Boys) and John Griffiths (Caulfield Grammarians) as Big V Champions, and recognise Joe Kelly as a Big V Legend, in recognition of his outstanding coaching record leading the VAFA men’s representative teams. Reunions of players from the ‘73, ‘83’, ‘93, 2003, and 2013 years will be in full force on the day.
This promises to be a wonderful event and I encourage all our VAFA community to book a ticket and experience first-hand, the wonderful celebration of our past and present VAFA representatives.
With a bye round scheduled, we are looking forward to a large crowd attending to support both teams.
Entry is just $10 for adults to cover the game costs, with children U12 free. For those wanting to watch from behind the glass in the comfort of a heated room, an official match day function will run in the Elsternwick Park social room from 12pm to 3pm, with ground entry, all-inclusive drinks and food provided throughout the three hours for just $75.
Bookings and further details can be found at VAFA.com.au
For anyone who can’t get to the game, uninterrupted radio coverage will be provided by RSN Xtra2 from 9:30am - 5:00pm, whilst both games will be live-streamed on the VAFA Website, Facebook and KommunityTV on the Herald Sun website.
We are thrilled to have secured two experienced and successful coaches to lead our teams.Joe Pignataro
The Premier Data stats don’t lie on the 1st of July
What a weekend of footy we have in store in William Buck Premier. Football’s oldest rivalry, a Sunday setup, the chasers fighting to stay in touch with the top four, and a top of the table clash.
The team at Premier Data have been working feverishly to keep across every kick, mark and handball to date. After Siri assisted me last week leading into Round 10, I’ve been trawling through the numbers ahead of Round 11 to give the readers a greater context of what could happen this weekend.
In the first of the RSN Xtra Match of the Day broadcasts, the Harry Trott Oval will come to life as the top two sides on the table do battle. Collegians have not put a foot wrong since the shock loss to University Blues in Round 6.
It’s the competition’s most prolific scoring side (97.5 points per game) at their home deck on a four game winning streak. Their last three matches at the Trott have seen the Purple Army outscore opponents by 232 points. 106 scoring shots to 44.
University Blues, whilst not prolific scorers have been defensive heavyweights. Other than Old Scotch in Round 3, they have kept opponents to an average of 15 scoring shots a game. Only Old Scotch have gone beyond 75 points against the Blues.
They have a defensive profile that stacks up; ranked number one for contested possessions and contested marks, top of the tree for hard ball gets, tackles, midfield tackles and defensive 50 tackles.
Collegians are the kings of possession, led by the King himself Kenny Ong, Gentleman Jim, Mr Michie, and Hungry Hibbo. They lead all-comers for handball receives, and uncontested marks.
In Round 6, Blues had a focus to not allow quick ball movement, and easy marks to be taken. Forcing the Lions into going long, easy pickings for Marty Gleeson, and Jack Stephens.
It was the day Tom Young discovered his forward ability and hasn’t looked back since. Nine goals from the last five matches.
Speaking of forward lines, Dave Mirra is hot to trot, 29 goals for the season. Will Pocknee (22), Ed Greene (19), and perhaps a recall coming for Alex Lukic (15 goals) this weekend.
The weather may play into the hands of the Blues defensive game, but at the Harry Trott Oval they might have nightmares of Mirra’s magical final quarter from 2022.
In the words of Josh Heriot this promises to be a ding-dong battle, join us at 1:00 PM for the pre-game, before the first bounce at 2 o’clock.
Football’s oldest clubs head to Scotch College. Old Scotch plays host to Old Melburnians. Paul Satterley and Mark Gnatt have already spent time together this week co-hosting For the Love of the Game. An insight that is must-listen for all coaches in the competition who ride the same emotional rollercoaster week-in, week-out.
Round 4 this year saw the Cardinals take the points at Elsternwick Park. It was part of the experiment that saw Jackson Paine play in the middle of the ground. An inspired choice from Satts. The OM’s skipper is the #1 player in the competition for tackles, and smothers.
Ben Harding is statistically the #1 player in the competition: Score involvements, contested possessions, disposals, handballs, clearances, inside 50’s - He has got an argument to be the recruit of the year. He is a fortnight away from wearing a Big V jumper against his mates from WA.
The Cardinals went into the weekend as the #1 attacking, and #1 defensive side. Now second to Collegians. Inaccuracy let them down against Old Haileybury. They still remain one of the benchmark sides in 2023.
Round 10 and 11, 2022 was the last time Old Scotch lost two games in a row. This year the playing group has a steely resolve and won’t want to let that happen.
The #1 kicking and marking side are able to absorb the pressure coming from opposition, maintaining possession of the footy. They can also change speeds and go quickly with the ball, working the angles as the number one side for blocks and hitting targets in space.
When the footy gets inside 50, they can lock the ball in, underlined by the Sherrin living in the forward 50 arc in the final term on Saturday, despite the inaccuracy. This team works for one another, the forward six lead the competition goal assists and tackles inside 50.
Paul Satterley has had to call on a mountain of troops in 2023 already. He’ll have to go back to the well again this weekend. With Tom Baker going out of the forward set up, Paine will return, but does he start in the centre circles or the forward line?
The mind-games between the two VAFA favourites have already started. Old Haileybury asked for respect from the competition, through the words of Daniel Ward. They certainly have got it. This is not a side Old Brighton can afford to take lightly.
At home this year, Wardy’s brigade have hit the right notes, pushing the reigning premiers to a point in the season opener, trailing Old Scotch by 2 goals at three quarter time, leading Old Melburnians into the final term, and level with the Uni Blues across three quarters of footy.
It all came together last weekend, they were able to withstand an onslaught from the Cardinals to produce their second win of the season. Against Old Brighton in round 2 it was the slow start that cost them. They matched it after that. The Bloods have been doing a lot of learning this year, and on the back half of the season are ready to put first half learnings into practice.
Josh Gasparini is in the top five for disposals, Lachie Treverton the top three for hitouts. The ruckman is likely to return this week.
It’s all seemingly gone pear-shaped for the Tonners in the last month, an average losing margin of 41 points, the highest score they’ve managed is 60 points.
Injuries and travel has hit Old Brighton, they still are #1 for ground ball gets, handball receives and clearances. They haven’t been able to turn those possession chains into effective inside 50’s and winning scores. With games against St Kevin’s and Old Scotch to come, this is a must-win game if they’re to have any chance of featuring in September. There’s no time to waste.
It’s been an up and down 10 weeks for the Old Xaverians in 2023. The loss to St Kevin’s last week evened the ledger at 5-5. Smack bang in the middle of the table.
They return to Xavier College with Caulfield Grammarians the travelling side. The nomads are 2-1 at the College in 2023, against the Fields earlier this year the red and black mafia put up their highest score of the season so far.
A week after their best performance of the year against Old Brighton, St Kevin’s outwrestled them keeping Xav’s their lowest score of the season.
James Byrne has churned through an incredible amount of players after 10 weeks, 44 to be exact. Charlie Whitehead and Jed Feneley, the only players to have played every game. Charlie MacIsaac and Fraser Pearce have played nine of the 10.
Like Old Brighton, this is a must-win for the Xaverians if they want to have a fighting chance of seeing finals. The Fields have to win if they’re to have any chance of staying in the VAFA’s top-flight in 2024.
Darcy Twist and Conor Cooke lead the way for Caulfield from a pressure act point of view. Oscar Roberts will have a task stopping Julian Soccio and Grant Valles on their home track.
Four games into his year, Marcus Stavrou is averaging 25 disposals, of those 13 are contested possessions. It’s a similar story for Dan Robinson floating through the midfield. When they have the footy in hand, things happen in the positive for Xav’s, and that’s what is going to be needed.
The round of footy will continue on Sunday this weekend. A doubleheader in the RSN Xtra Match of the Day space.
University Blacks will take on the reigning premiers St Kevin’s in the clubs annual NAIDOC Round match.
Both clubs will come together and proudly wear their indigenous guernseys and ahead of the match there will be a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony signifying the importance of the day.
St Kevin’s went a long way to re-establishing themselves last weekend as the team to beat, putting Old Xaverians to the sword by 46 points.
Whilst it was terrific to see Lachie Sullivan accumulate 37 disposals as the dominant midfielder on the ground. Plugger Lynch would have been equally as pleased to see Tom Jok pull through the game unscathed.
While Ben Harding can take the wrap as the best midfielder statistically in the competition. Campbell Moorfield can lay claim to the best defender. #1 for intercept marks, 11 ahead of the next best Marty Gleeson. #1 for intercept possessions, 17 ahead of the next best. #1 for kicks, 33 ahead of the next best. #1 for effective kick-in’s. #1 for Rebound 50’s.
The challenge for Moorfield, Joel Ernest and the Blacks defence will be to curtail the presence of the SKOB forwards - Seven goals between Paddy Kerr and Josh Wallis last weekend. Mitch Wallis is the #1 player for goal assists. And, Shaun Kennedy remains a focal point in the forward line.
For all of Siri’s assistance last week, and the Premier Data assistance this week. The one thing stats, and AI doesn’t take into account.
The human element.
It doesn’t factor European travel, it doesn’t account for Melbourne’s 4-seasons in one day weather, the evenness of the VAFA’s Premier competition is not in its robotic thinking. Potential scores, and potential victories are just that, potential.
Statistics show a breakaway top four after 10 weeks, however, only twice in 12 seasons has the top four to this point of the year remained the final four in September.
Clubs, coaches and players alike are the only ones in control of the outcomes this weekend. The first weekend of July.

Reigning premiers find their groove
Just over halfway through the season, and the bottom half of the table are challenging the top. Round 10 saw a host of upsets in Premier Women’s once again. However, it was St Kevin’s who proved their credentials as the outright favourites for this year’s premiership and the chance to defend their title.
St Kevin’s vs Old Scotch was primed to be the match of the round and SKOB prepared accordingly for the occasion. Scotch was no match for the reigning premiers, kicking only two goals for the game compared to SKOB’s six.
The game was won in the third quarter, or the premiership quarter, with St Kevin’s standing up to the challenge and blowing the margin out of the water. It just goes to show the depth within the team and the experience as reigning premiers to pull off these big game moments.
As usual, star players Bree Doyle and Emily Condon showed off their skills, whilst Olivia Arundel and Georgia Fraser-Smith were the Cardinals’ best. Yet it was Catherine Stanton who was a clear best on ground. Her three goals earnt her the number 1 ranking, continuing to put together a strong season.
Next week, St Kevin’s will take on Melbourne Uni, whilst Old Scotch host Collegians in the match of the round.
The Coburg Lions pulled off an upset over Melbourne Uni Women’s, taking full advantage of hosting the match at Piranha Park. This was another game where one team harnessed the premiership quarter, with the Lions’ scoring 30 points to Melbourne Uni’s zero.
Lauren Collis continued her strong season for the Lions with two goals, whilst Stephanie Filbay also kicked two. Isabella Robson and Brooke Randall were standouts for Melbourne Uni, with Randall kicking two goals.
Coburg will have the week off next week, whilst Melbourne Uni faces the toughest opposition in the competition in St Kevin’s.
What a win it was for Caulfield. Last year’s grand finalists have been relinquishing at the lower end of the ladder, yet they sent a warning to the competition, reminding everyone how strong they are when they’re at their best.
A first half blitz saw Caulfield set the tone for the match, with Collegians unable to match that level as Grammarians exposed what has been such a strong side this year. Had Collegians kicked straight, the story may have been very different.
Georgia Harris was the sole goal kicker for the purple army, whilst Maddison Shaw was the best. Chloe O’Malley kicked two goals for Collegians, whilst it was Matilda Mottram who was their best.
Collegians will be training hard this week in preparation for their big match against Old Scotch, with both teams looking to rebound from tough losses. Meanwhile, Caulfield will host Fitzroy.

The final match of the round was a nailbiter, with West Brunswick downing Fitzroy by three points. It all came down to the final quarter, with both teams scoring a goal a-piece. However, the winner of this game was the more accurate side in front of goals.
Fitzroy’s four behinds were costly and had they converted just one of those points to a goal, they would’ve run away with the points.
Robyn Randell was Fitzroy’s best, whilst Taylah Wilson was the best for the Magpies. Next weekend, Fitzroy will travel to Glen Huntly Oval to play Caulfield and will be hoping it’s a very different game to when these sides played in Round 3. Elsewhere, West Brunswick will play Kew fresh off the bye.

No Fearon the CY’s faces as they tempered a shark attack by the beach
Another action-packed weekend of Premier B Men’s footy saw thrilling encounters and close finishes. The headline act belongs to Williamstown and what they were able to produce on their home track.
In the battle of the blue and gold. Williamstown CYMS turned the tables on Beaumaris at Fearon Reserve. Since going down to the Sharks in round 4, the CY’s have turned up the heat in Premier B and are now on a 4-game winning streak.
Like many VAFA venues, the wind played a factor in the contest early on. A seven goal blitz in the opening term set the CY’s up with a 39 point lead that the Sharks were never able to pull back.
The margin reached 43 points at the final change, Beauy unable to convert their chances kicking 3.6.24 in the final term.
Nick Ebinger was back down from the VFL for his first outing of the season, kicking three goals, supported by fellow VFL operator in Oskar Manton. Familiar names for Beaumaris did all they could for the Sharks, Joel Cusack, Jak Nardino and Riley Mihailovic tried all day.
Williamstown will face the toughest task in Premier B this weekend, heading to St Bernard’s to take on the Snowdogs while the Sharks will write the next chapter in their rivalry with St Bede’s Mentone/Tigers at Brindisi St Oval.
In a captivating showdown, Old Geelong faced off against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Como Park. The two sides are in a middle of the table fight for a berth in this year’s top four. Despite blustery conditions early, it was SBMT who got the early jump on the OG’s with the only three goals of the first term.
The OG’s were able to find three of their own in the second term to take a six point advantage into the main change. Off the back of a second term downpour, the next 30 minutes was tight, tough and intense footy with neither side able to break clear at the Tigers ahead by one point leading into the final stanza.
With no one able to break the deadlock in the opening eight minutes, it fell to Ben Murphy (SBMT) as the ball bounced perfectly for him. The OG’s hit back with one of their own before a terrific mark by Caleb Lewis at the top of the goal square sealed the deal with his second of the day.
Since Round 5, the Tigers have swapped Loss, Win, Loss, Win, Loss, Win - They’re now equal with the OG’s at 5-5 and will head home this weekend to tackle bayside rivals Beaumaris at Brindisi St Oval keen for two wins in a row.
Old Geelong have had just one win from their last four matches, the challengers get tougher closer to September. This weekend, Fitzroy at Brunswick St Oval.
The other game that finished in a close one was played out at Waverley Oval as De La Salle and St Bernards locked horns. The Snowdogs on a 9-game winning streak have left everyone in their wake this season, however it was De La who got the early jump on the ladder leaders keeping them goalless in the first quarter.
Much like at Como Park, the Snowdogs came back at the home side to level it up at half-time. A tight third quarter followed with De La putting their noses in front with 30 minutes to play.
Steve Alessio’s men were able to answer the challenge thrown at them by the boys of the Dairybell, despite inaccuracy dominating in front of goal, the final term’s score of 1.5.11 was enough as they kept De La to 0.1.1 - That one goal came at the 18 minute mark off the boot of Daniel Mott to secure a 10th straight win for St Bernard’s.
Jake Williams led the way for De La Salle, the boys of the Dairybell would consider themselves unlucky to not have come away winners, St Bernard’s happy to have used a get out of jail card. One thing they haven’t had to do this year, until the weekend is win ugly. They now head back to the College to face Williamstown in Round 11.
Old Geelong’s loss to St Bede’s Mentone/Tigers has allowed De La to remain in fourth spot, a game clear of both sides. A win against AJAX this weekend will keep the blue and gold inside the top four.
Over at the Daley Oval, Old Trinity took on AJAX in another closely fought out contest.
The T’s got the jump on the Jackers to open up a 28 point lead at quarter time. As the rain smashed down during the second term it was the Jackers who returned serve and closed to within 17 points at half time.
As the final term got underway with the margin at 24 points, it was the Jackers who kicked the first two goals to
make Donald McDonald a touch nervous about proceedings. A steadying goal from Ben Smith right on the cusp of time on, was enough to allow him to rest easy.
Veteran of the side Cal Pohl led the way for the victors, while Justin Vogel, in his first game for the season was awarded the Jackers best player.
After losing two games in a row, they’ll be looking to make it two wins in a row when they face Monash Blues this weekend. Earlier this year they had a gritty five point win over the twoblues. Ajax return to Gary Smorgon Oval to face De La Salle, a side they’ve had brilliant recent battles with.
Monash Blues were up against it early on in their battle with Fitzroy at Frearson Oval. Trailing by 29 points at quarter time, the margin was extended to 41 at half time, before blowing out to 62 at the final change.
Daniel Megennis (4 goals), Jack McKay (3 goals) and Charlie Faubel (3 goals) dominated the scoring. Laird Ramshaw, fresh off winning the ACC Year 12 Grand Final with Parade College also hit the scoreboard.
Daniel Easson may well have extended his lead in the Blues best and fairest count after another strong display. James Flett added another two goals to his season tally.
Monash will remain at home in Round 11 facing Old Trinity, while the Roys welcome Old Geelong to Brunswick St Oval. Earlier this year was a thriller at Como Park in which the Roys prevailed by a solitary point.
The same result this weekend will leave the footy purists wanting even more.
As fans eagerly anticipate these thrilling matchups, another exciting weekend of Premier B Men’s football awaits. Will the favorites dominate, or will we witness more surprising results? Stay tuned to find out.

Premier B Women’s top four have a tight grasp on their positions on the ladder
Round 10 saw Premier B Women’s top four teams maintain their spots on the ladder, with Monash Blues still on top.
Richmond Centrals outing to the home grounds of Aquinas OC was unfortunately unsuccessful with Aquinas reigning supreme and producing a 19-pointmargin between the final scores.
For Richmond, accuracy was their downfall, scoring a total of 6 behinds and 2 goals. It was Stephanie Talarico and Christie Brewis who scored Richmond’s two goals and worked alongside their best-on-field Katherine Brown to shorten the margin.
After a triumphant week in round 9 for Aquinas, they headed into this round with confidence and with goalkicking machines in Holly Spicer, Molly Sheehan and Laura McHugh, who were also deemed best-on-field, creating success for their team.
Next Richmond will come head-to-head with the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers with Aquinas heading to the home grounds of North Brunswick.
It was a nail-biting game between Brunswick and Monash Blues, in a match that could have been anyone’s until the very end, with only three points between them at the final siren. Brunswick sadly suffered another loss by less than a goal, for the second week in a row. Trying their best to keep the margin short was Brunswick’s goal kicker Augie Ross and their best-on-field Josephine Brown. Can Brunswick lift their game in next week›s match up against Mazenod OC?
The Blues were triumphant once again and are now on a four-game winning streak. Ainslee Elliott scored a goal for her team, with Ella Stephenson delivering on a best-on-ground performance. Monash are gearing up for next week›s match against the Cobras who are fighting for the top spot.
In another close game, it was the Old Yarra Cobras who stole the show on home turf with a 5-point win over St Bedes/Mentone.
Similar to their top competition, the Cobras are also on a 4-game winning streak, with outstanding efforts from best-on-field Casey Sheldon Collins and goalkickers Illiana Zarfiriou, Penny Cula-Reid and Kristy Brockway.
Although the Tigers drew the short straw on this occasion, they played an incredible match with Jacklyn Honey, Alanah Strode and Madeleine Tilley scoring one goal each. Megan Jenkins displayed best-on-ground qualities with her defensive talents.
Next round, the Tigers will head towards the home grounds of Richmond Central while the Cobras will come head-to-head with their biggest competition in Monash Blues.
Mazenod OC’s outing to North Brunswick was triumphant, with 19 points between the final scores.
Through great resilience, North Brunswick made attempts to reduce the margin with Mary Ntalianis scoring their only goal and working alongside best-player Jackie Vella. Next round, they will play a home match against Aquinas OC.

All’s Well that ends Well
It was a case of FIFTH time lucky for Old Camberwell who overcame their arch-nemesis PEGS on Saturday afternoon.
In 2022, the Wellers were made to be the bridesmaids to PEGS dominance, going down in the Grand Final and then for a fourth consecutive time earlier this season. After 30 minutes of play, trailing by 36 points, they were staring down the barrel of a fifth straight defeat.
Even at three quarter time, despite keeping PEGS goalless for two quarters, the Wellers still trailed by 26 points. Enter Riley Verbi. He had already kicked the goal of the day in the second term. Then exploded with four goals in the final quarter to finish the day with five, and Old Camberwell with seven.
11 points ahead of PEGS and now two games clear of the 2022 Division 1 Premiers. Thomas Oliver was one of the best, along with James Allen.
PEGS, for the second week in a row, have been held to under 40 points. The dominance they displayed through the early rounds of the season has seen them fall short to Old Ivanhoe and now Old Camberwell. This weekend they’ll welcome the Rovers to their home track hellbent on turning the past fortnight around.
Old Camberwell heads out to Carey Sports Complex to do battle with the Panthers, who’ll be fresh off the bye this weekend.
Old Ivanhoe goes into the bye this weekend on a five game winning streak. A 43-point win over Ormond the latest result.
The margin could have been significantly greater had it not been for inaccuracy in the final term. 2.11.23 to 0.1.1 left the Hoers on 8.22.70 for the afternoon.
Finn Knight, in his first senior game for the year kicked two goals. Luke Scuderi also kicked multiple goals to continue his run of goals in every game this year. From eight games he’s kicked 24 goals. Will Nagel and Nick Reeves-Smyth also had a hand in the victory.
Earlier this year, these two sides played off in a thrilling draw. This time around, despite starting the better, the Monders weren’t able to gather back the ascendancy after quarter time. They’ve now dropped six games in a row.
In Round 3 they fell short to Mazenod by under a goal, they’ll be desperate to turn the tables on that result this weekend and stay in touch with Hampton Rovers in eighth spot.
Hampton Rovers aren’t completely safe from the relegation zone just yet, but went a long way to securing a spot in Premier C for 2024 after beating Parkdale by nine points.
Three weeks in a row now, Liam O’Driscoll has put the Rovers on his shoulders and implored his teammates to follow his lead. Another two goals in a best on ground performance underlined his importance to the Rovers.
Will Crawford, from the Under 19’s made his senior debut last year. This year he has returned to the 19’s and kicked 19 goals from six games. In the senior side on the weekend he kicked another two. A future prospect for Anthony Quon.
Ryan MacDermid is having a stellar individual season for Parkdale, another bag of four on the weekend. He has kicked 30 for the year. Cooper Williamson in just his eighth senior game was part of Owen Lalors best players.
The win for the Rovers puts them half a game behind the Vultures on the ladder. Can they make it three from their past four when they face PEGS on Saturday?
The Vultures have now lost three in a row, they head to Marcellin College desperate for the four points, and to stay in touch with the top four.
ROUND 10 RESULTS

Parkdale Vultures: C. Williamson, C. Yee, Y. Hopkins-Gamble, R. Macdermid, J. Stolp, F. Wilkins
Marcellin could only watch on as Mazenod put them to the sword across the first half to set up the Nodders 57 point victory.
For the second week in a row, 96 points in the contest was the magic number for the Nodders. And Harry Boyce was the focal point in the forward line. A bag of five, to follow on from three and two in the previous fortnight.
Tom McKenna and Liam Welsford also put in standout performances as Marcellin tried valiantly to put up resistance against the Nodders.
The home side are having a tough time of things in 2023. Scoring is proving to be an issue while being leaky at the other end of the ground is also having an impact.
There is still time to salvage something from the season with eight games to go. They can start to turn the tide this weekend facing Parkdale at the College.
Mazenod can keep the pressure on PEGS in third spot if they’re to triumph over Ormond this weekend.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Grace Read (Power House AFC)
The VAFA congratulates Grace Read from Power House Amateur Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 10 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Grace delivered a strong performance and a goal from the weekend, getting her team over the line in a narrow win over Glen Eira.
What the club said:
Grace has come from a soccer background and has adapted to Australian Rules Football very quickly. Her athletic ability has put her in good stead to take on the game. Her determination to learn and improve is clearly evident - always at training and always with a broad smile.
We knew that eventually her mighty kick would land us an important goal and on Saturday, in the most trying conditions, Grace launched one that skidded through for a vital 6 points.
In the last few weeks Grace has played ruck and took the role on without notice and most definitely without fear, once again displaying what a fierce competitor and selfless teammate she is.
Grace, or “Ready” as we fondly call her, has enormous potential! We are very proud to have her as part of the Power House Family and look forward to watching her develop further as a footballer.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Thomas Rowland (Old Trinity)
The VAFA congratulates Thomas Rowland from Old Trinity Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 10. Tom delivered a stellar performance in his sides win over AJAX on the weekend that earned him a spot in the best.
What the club said:
Tom Rowland has joined us this season from Coburg VFL and originally from the Western Jets and Altona Juniors.
Tom has played mainly wing and half back this season using his tremendous skills and decision making to our advantage. At 20 Tom has a terrific future ahead of him as his attitude to his training, his teammates and the club in general is first class.

Bullants break their 2023 duck as Gryphons remain unbeaten
The game of the year for the Preston Bullants. They are on the winners list for 2023, credit goes to George Costonis for sticking it out.
What a game, a game that saw an even amount of twists and turns with both teams toughing it out at the W.R Ruthven Reserve. Therry Penola threw the first punch kicking five goals to three in the opening term.
Nick Mclntosh, Adrian Allison putting the Bullants to the sword as they were shown to be dominant early. But then the Bullants did reply, showing why they were ready to pounce when they got their opportunity, kicking three crucial goals to take a key ten point lead into halftime with Connor Howard producing some fireworks with some handy goals.
The Lions did not give up, boasting a three point lead at three quarter time which the final quarter set it up for a grand finale which it did, the Bullants finishing on top with a crucial win, winning by seventeen points.
Connor Howard kicked three goals as part of the match winning performance and Hugo Byron has had a strong couple of weeks. After nine straight losses to open season 2023, they’re now on the board and off the bottom of the table.
They’ll be looking to make it two in a row when they face off against Old Peninsula. Therry Penola are now part of the middle group of sides at 5-5, taking on West Brunswick this weekend.
Kew FC took on Glen Eira at Victoria Park, an all-important top four match to keep the Bears in the hunt for a top three spot on the ladder.
The Gryphons started the game the way they’ve started most games this year, a good start and opened up a gap from opposition, bursting out to a four goal lead through Chillcott and Ewirn-Ross.
The Bears were facing an uphill battle not capitalising on key moments which did not help the cause, kicking two goals eight behinds that put them on the backfoot all of the game.
Kew were unable to whittle back any of the lead with continued inaccuracy in front of goal.
Glen Eira came away with yet another win by forty four points on the board making it ten straight, whilst its back to the drawing board for the Bears as they look to try get a win next week.
Prahran FC are back on the winners list with a convincing win over West Brunswick.
It really was a one sided affair, with the Two Blues bursting of the blocks early with a commanding start by booting seven goals in the opening term. Rory Brodie, once again influential as ever, with four goals and really well aided by Alex Maxwell who booted three.
The Magpies couldn’t regain momentum, and ascendancy therefore struggling to compete for the majority of the game, Declan Dickson was the main highlight for the Magpies producing one of his best games for the season.
After back to back losses, Prahran is shaping up nicely to get them rising up the ladder ready for finals at the back end of the season. This week the face Ivanhoe AFC, a win against the last placed Hoers will see them continue to nip at the heels of Kew in third.
The Magpies head back home to face Therry Penola at Ransford Oval. Earlier this year it was the Lions who took the honours by seven points in an all-time classic.
Oakleigh travelled down the highway to take on Old Peninsula.
The Krushers, with the aide of the breeze started positively without completely putting the Pirates away, kicking waywood at two goals six points, at quarter time.
Thomas Gillard had one of his best games for the Krushers with a best on ground performance. Aaron Cloke dominated as full forward, bagging four goals.
The Pirates were not able to stay in the game with the Krushers proving why they will most likely slot into 2nd on the ladder after they put the afterburners on and motored away with a comfortable win. They’ve now won three games in a row and are the likely challenger to the Gryphons in September.
After winning three games in a row, the Pirates momentum was cut-short on the weekend, they’ll be keen to make amends this Saturday, facing off against Preston.
UHS-VU absolutely showed no mercy against Ivanhoe, as they put on a high performance display to complete a dominating victory.
UHS started positively but wasn’t until after quarter time where they turned the screws on the Hoers. The Vultures piled on an onslaught of goals. Harry Kennedy and James Gilfillan showed why they are one of their better players, being able to hit up their key forwards and be able to dominate in the middle.
Harrison Bourke and Michael Doyle were the best players for Ivanhoe but it wasn’t enough to secure the win after their slow start.
The margin could have been significantly greater had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal. Regardless, a crucial four points for UHS-VU and still in contention for September action.

Round 10 saw wild weather conditions wreak havoc on Saturday’s matches, with a mix of nailbiters and demolitions across the division.
Old Brighton have dropped to third on the ladder after a harrowing loss to Old Geelong at Brighton Beach Oval. Both teams struggled to convert early, with Old Geelong leading by a solitary point coming into the final term. However, it was Old Geelong that were able to use the wind to their advantage when it mattered most, kicking 3.6 to Old Brighton’s 0.1 in the last quarter to seal the win.
Lily Tait was back to her best for Old Brighton, kicking their only goal of the day, while Rebecca Egan and Amy Halaby contributed significantly to get Old Geelong over the line.
Old Brighton will look to redeem themselves when they travel to Marcellin College next week, while Old Geelong will host Hampton Rovers at Como Park in what should be a winnable game.
Old Melburnians are back on the winners’ list after defeating Hampton Rovers in a game of two halves. The Omlettes asserted their dominance early, kicking five goals to Hampton’s one in the first half. The Rovers were the better side for the second half, keeping the Omlettes scoreless while launching their own attack but they left their run too late, going down by 9 points at the final siren.
Stephanie Barnett was a welcome return for the Omlettes, earning the best-on accolade for her side, while Sally Peers showed off her skills in the forward line, kicking two goals for the day. For the Rovers, Jasmina Andros continued her strong season.
Old Melburnians will look to continue their winning ways when they face off with Old Xaverians next week. At the same time, Hampton will be hoping to repeat their round 5 win against Old Geelong.
Old Camberwell Grammarians have notched a backto-back win for the first time this season, after overcoming Old Xaverians by a single point. After drawing in their previous encounter this year, both sides would have been feeling a sense of déjà vu when the scores were level at three-quarter time, but it was Old Camberwell who managed to kick the deciding point in the final term to break the hearts of Old Xavs.
Maggie Wilson and Vanessa Murphy starred for their respective sides, kicking a goal each.
Old Camberwell will need to work on their accuracy if they intend to avenge last year’s grand final loss against reigning premiers, Beaumaris, next Saturday. Old Xaverians will return home next week, hoping to cause an upset against the Omlettes.
Marcellin OC outperformed Old Haileybury by 54 points, putting forward a strong case for why they should be playing finals come August. The Sheagles were consistent all day, hitting the scoreboard each quarter, while only allowing Old Haileybury a total of four scoring shots.
Alana Pane has been in tremendous form this season, only missing from the bests for one match, and was recognised as the top performer for Marcellin once again with two goals to her name. Annie Xanthos (1 goal) also played an instrumental role in Marcellin’s dominant display, slotting back into her side seamlessly after a stint in the VFLW.
Arielle Cathcart and Pulomaja Gardiyawasam were shining lights for Old Haileybury, doing their best to prevent Marcellin’s damage.
Marcellin have been pushing to crack the top four and will have the perfect opportunity to do so next weekend when they host Old Brighton, who have been out of form lately. After this week’s disappointing loss, Old Haileybury will look to bounce back against the struggling Hawks.
The final game of the round saw a bloodbath at Banksia Reserve when first-placed Beaumaris played host to last-placed Hawthorn AFC. The Hawks did well to keep up with the Sharks in the first quarter, with both sides coming into the first break with a goal each, however, things started to get ugly in the second term when Beaumaris kicked six unanswered goals. The floodgates were opened and there was no return for the Hawks as the Sharks continued to extend their lead, ultimately crushing the Hawks by 16 goals.
Holly du Plessis was Hawthorn’s sole goal-scorer, while Tessa Bodin was named best for the visiting side.
Meanwhile, Pia Staltari led the way for the home side, kicking three goals and being named as best, whereas Simone Marinelli kicked a bag of five to launch herself into equal first on the goal-kicking tally.
Beaumaris should be able to continue their undefeated season when they host Old Camberwell next week, while Hawthorn will travel to Princes Park, Caulfield with the aim of securing their first Division 1 win.

The Devils are Raising Hell in Division 2 Men’s
It’s safe to say it was the wind which had the most say in Round 10 with heavy casualties written all over the scoreboards.
Parkside put on a staggering performance in the thrilling top-four clash against Brunswick at Pitcher Park.
The first quarter had the wind in Brunswick’s favour, however both teams had attacking intent neck and neck. But for the remaining three quarters, Parkside put the foot down being first to the footy. Benjamin Radford (5 goals) played his classic brand putting much pressure on the Brunswick backline and has risen to first place on the competition goal kicking leaderboard (42 Goals). Jack Hamilton (3 goals) ripped up Pitcher Park as per usual with the help of Corey McKay (3 Goals). Matthew Holden and Steven Logozzo (1 Goal) worked hard in and under and applied much pressure around the footy. The final quarter saw Parkside put the game beyond doubt, with a 65 point victory over the top four team. The result shows the Devils are indeed the ones to beat this season.
Overall, Parkside seem to be soaring high, not only on the scoreboard but on the Division 2 ladder in convincing form. Round 11 sees them face their Division 3 grand final rivals South Melbourne Districts one more time after their round 3 victory to possibly put the nail in the coffin.
It was a tough day at the office in even tougher conditions, but Whitefriars pulled through with a 22-point victory over St Mary’s Salesian. The first half started evenly with both sides exchanging blows, the Friars established a small lead early, exploiting the chaos of the wind by getting the ball forward and locking the footy in the fifty. As inaccuracy was inevitable, it was up to the grit and determination of the backs and midfielders to provide as much opportunity for forwards as possible, and with Max Warrick’s leadership the Friars did just that. Effort and work rate was huge all day, Spencer Larson dominated in the ruck for the likes of Travis Baker and James Perrin to pick up the scraps. As per usual Daniel Wood (4 Goals)
refused to allow the wind to affect his tally with the help of Marlon Simbolon (2 Goals) to place some goal kicking pressure up front. Whitefriars had a solid team performance with everyone showing up to contribute on the day.
The Old Yarra Cobras are back in venomous form after a 42-point victory over Bulleen Templestowe. A lacklustre start allowed the Bullants to get comfortable with a five-point lead by halftime. However, Cobra venom came through with new tactics and tougher footy. Elliot Brandon-Jones deservedly received his best on ground with an inspiring display, Chris Docker and Luke Stacker (3 Goals) had a chemistry like no other and linked up along the ground well, but it was Dave Tokatliyan’s (4 Goals) day setting off fireworks early in the third quarter which revved up the Cobras for the fourth. Although the first half was contentious, the second half was resolute, the Cobras player their brand and their brand only.
At Gary Smorgon Oval, it was a nail-biting first quarter between South Melbourne Districts and Old Paradians, but by the final siren it was the Swans with a 39-point lead. The Swans were convincing all day and tough defence and tactics allowed for much opportunity on the counter. Jason Clifford had a blinder of a game and worked well in tandem with Luke Johnson. Shaun Wilson ran his boots off while Jack Cotton (1 Goal) wore his jersey proud being first to the footy to allow opportunity for Jamie Brooker (3 Goals) and Sam Bradford (2 Goals) to convert their hard-earned work rate to the scoreboard. South Melbourne Districts are keeping a keen eye on that top spot, and they most definitely possess the roster to seize it for themselves.

Although Aquinas put in an inspirational effort as usual, it was MHSOB’s day at the Woodfull-Miller Oval. A tough start from the Unicorns as the wind impacted their goal kicking heavily kicking seven behinds in the first quarter, allowed Aquinas to set the tone. After a few shifts in tactics, the Unicorns found their line and it was game over. Nathan Volk (1 Goal) dominated the midfield and placed much pressure while on the attack. Bryce Dowling and Petro Pirozek (1 Goal) added their own flair to the game with the help of William Hellier and Charles Pearson. Overall, the Unicorns played well as a squad and are looking to sneak in as the underdogs for that top four position.

Seventh Heaven for Tess Beagley and the Williamstown CY’s
Round 10 had it all with massive wins for ladderleading sides, a slog of a victory for Old Trinity and a rare forfeit as Ivanhoe were unable to get a team together.
Therry Penola took on the undefeated Williamstown CYMS at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve, with both teams having limited lists. Therry Penola had 12 players take to the field while Williamstown had 15.
The CY’s displayed their dominance right from the get go and kept Therry scoreless for the entire first quarter while scoring 30 points themselves. Williamstown’s swift ball movement, strong defence and attack on the ball proved too much for the Lions.
As the game progressed, Williamstown were able to extend their 57-point half time lead to 127 points by final siren. Williamstown walked away the victors, claiming the four points and a hefty percentage boost.
Having 33 shots at goal and finishing with 20 majors, Williamstown shared the glory between players with Tess Beagley kicking seven, Alessia Acquaro kicking six, Sofi-Kristin Georgas kicking five and Paras Mackenzie, Kiara Palmar and Emily Gardener all kicking one each.
Gemma Macgregor was best on for Therry Penola while Claire Sandman kicked the team’s only goal of the game.
Over at Ferndale Park, St Mary’s Salesian faced off against Old Trinity in dry yet extremely muddy conditions.
In what was an even match up of skill and ability, both teams played a strong defensive game and made scoring difficult for the other. Old Trinity just had the edge on St Mary’s going into the half time break with a nine point lead, however St Mary’s unrelenting tackling pressure in the second half of the game kept Old Trinity unable to add to their score at all in the final quarter.
Old Trinity managed to hold onto the lead as St Mary’s struggled to convert in front of goal late in the last quarter, and secured their fifth win of the season.
Kellie Woodhouse and Stephanie Bull showcased their ability in front of goal, kicking an impressive goal each from acute angles, while Mia Kolednik’s strong effort across half back scored her the best on votes for Old Trinity.
Georgia Cropley kicked St Mary’s only goal of the game and Holly Wilson was best on.
Parkdale Vultures hosted MCC at Gerry Green Reserve for an afternoon showdown. Parkdale came out strong, setting the tone for the game and scored 44 points in the opening quarter. A tough second quarter comeback from MCC saw the team kick two goals, with the Vultures only managing to kick three.
Returning from the main break, the Vultures turned up the heat, and great cohesion between ruck, Bree Allan and midfielder, Brooke Carson helped the Vultures dominate around stoppages and got the ball moving in the direction of goal.
Siena Symons celebrated her 50th game, and led the goal scoring, kicking six majors for the Vultures. Despite MCC’s best effort, Parkdale’s powerful defence only allowed MCC to kick two goals and one behind for the entire game.
The VAFA is looking for volunteer reporters to cover Divisions 3 & 4 Women’s for the 2023 season. If you’re interested, please email media@vafa.com.au
Parkdale bagged a huge 91-point victory and have secured their position in the top four.
Siena Symons was best on for Parkdale while Charlie Wade was best on for MCC.
In a rare occurrence, Ivanhoe forfeited the game against Albert Park as they were unable to get a side together. Hopefully the Ivies are able to get a side on the park this coming weekend. The Falcons will return to this weekend to the field against the Vultures in a must win contest, a game that will go a long way to determining who will finish the season with a double chance in the finals series.

Boil overs and big winners
Division Three Men’s was treated to another top of the table clash this week as Canterbury looked to make it back to back statements against Elsternwick, whilst another premiership contender let out all of their round nine frustration in their biggest win of the season.
Sitting pretty atop of the ladder the Cobras came out keen to replicate their winning ways from their season defining win against the hawks last week, getting the better of Elsternwick early to hold a narrow 9-point lead heading into half time.
Fresh off his return from injury Cobras captain Nick Szabo his gang of gut runners in Martin Astbury and cousin Mitch Szabo did all they could to break the game open in the third quarter with Elsternwick refusing to settle heading into the final quarter.
Managing not only to break down Cobras defence, Elsternwick managed to use the run to their advantage, running away with what might just be their best win of the season behind a career best performance from Blake Pantas, taking best on ground honours along with two majors to his name.
Although just one win in amongst a fantastic season, Elsternwick can move ahead into the back half of the 2023 year with renewed confidence that on any given day and any given oval, they can be the best side in the competition.
Elsewhere around division three Richmond took down Swinburne in what was their most complete game of 2023.
This season has never been a question of fire power early for the snakes, but moreover the ability to run out a full four quarters and bury a side when needed, which is exactly what they produced on the weekend. The first quarter was a goal scorers delight with Richmond booting five of their own whilst Swinburne couldn’t miss, managing to rocket through four straight to start the game on a high.
From there, the snakes managed to keep their foot on the accelerator and pick apart an admirable effort from Swinburne, taking the four point and their third win of the season with a 47-point win for a Saturday afternoon.
Swinburne, although taking a loss still had players shining with Liam Bradley Brander (3) and Maclean Huf (2) kicking true, whilst Richmond managed 5 players in the multiple goal scorer category with Damien Holland taking best on ground for the win.
The Snakes have a real opportunity to climb the ladder as the season progresses, sitting one win behind Power House in a battle of the middle of the table.
While on the subject, round 10 may be a round to forget for the former division two side who were subject to a barrage of big bodies and pure frustration from Hawthorn AFC
After losing in the final quarter last week to the Cobras the men of the eastern suburbs left no stone unturned in their percentage boosting Victory, falling just short of raising the bat for a double century. The first quarter was competitive amongst the sides, with Power House scoring 4.4 28 to only trail by 16 into the second quarter.
From there, it was all about the hawks who in the third quarter managed to kick a staggering 10 straight goals to blow the game wide open, allowing 13 different goal scorers to cash in on the momentum, ending the game with 30 goals, the most this season.
22´ team of the year forward pocket Justin Raiti kicked himself a bag of 6 whilst compatriot Jack Kenny also got in on the action with a bag of 5 himself.
Despite the bags kicked however it was Hawthorns Will Ryan who took home man of the match honours, being one of only a handful of players not to score in the game.

The final game of the round saw Wattle Park continue their winning ways as they managed to pick a part La Trobe with a 71-point victory away from home.
Managing just one point in the first quarter the Animals seemed rattled to kick off round 10, eventually finding their feet in the second quarter to go into the half 25 points up.
The second half kept much the same story line, with La Trobe digging deep behind the tough nut game style of Jacob Assemani however being unable to hit the score board, with the Animals running away with the victory.
Nathan Bird managed to find plenty of the football for Wattle Park up forward with 5 to his name, also taking home best on ground honours for the victory.
Round 11 next week brings its own headlines, the most interesting of which again features the Cobras as they look to bounce back against Wattle Park in what will be the best test of the season for the fourth place Animals.

Important Victories and A Hard-Fought Draw: Masala Triumphs, Albert Park Shines, and Box Hill North and the Bulls Battles to a Stalemate
Round 10 kicked off with what was the match of the season (so far) in Division 4, between the undefeated North Brunswick and the always-game Box Hill North The first quarter saw a bit of a chess match between the two sides as they battled control, however, the Bulls were able to gain a small 13-point lead at the quarter time break. The Demons fought their way back into the game in the second term with a 4-goal quarter that saw them take the momentum of the game and take a 3-point lead into halftime.
North Brunswick was able to find their way back into the game in the third quarter with a 3-goal to 2 quarter that saw them bring the game back into their terms with a 7-point lead, setting the stage for a thrilling final quarter. Box Hill North found themselves in prime position for a win with the first 2 goals of the quarter to take a 6-point lead. However, with less than 20 seconds on the clock, Bulls player Luke Russell was able to slot a goal to force a draw in what was a thrilling conclusion in the match of the season so far.
Amongst the best for Box Hill North were Blake Williams, Aaron D’Amato and Rowan Lawrence. Amongst the best for the Bulls were Zac Dicianni, Simon Woodward and Nicholas Dimarco. Multiple goal kickers for the Demons were Michael Trkujia (3) and Blake Williams (2). Multiple goal kickers for the Bulls were Jake Horwood (3), James Miralles Lombardo (2) and Luke Russell (2). The Demons will now make a trip down the road as they face Eley Park. North Brunswick will make the trip to Albert Park as they face off against the in-form Falcons.
The second match of the round saw one of the division’s most in-form sides in Albert Park take on the always unpredictable St Johns. Albert Park got off to a very strong start kicking 4 goals for the quarter whilst keeping the JOCs scoreless to take a 33-point lead into quarter time. The JOCs were able to rebound in the second quarter with a 4-goal to 2 quarter, reducing the margin of the Falcons down to 18 with a half of football to play.
The Falcons once again were able to take control and use the wind to their advantage with a 5-goal to 2 quarter extending their lead out to 41 points with 30 minutes of football to be played. The final quarter saw a hard-fought battle with both teams defending their goals well as only 2 goals were kicked for the quarter with each side only managing 1 major. In the end, it was the Falcons that won in fairly a convincing fashion by 45 points over the JOCs, extending their win streak to 3 as they face a tough task in round 11.
Jack Lee, Jack Amies and Christopher Marson all led the charge up forward for the Falcons with 3 goals each. For the JOCS it was Jed Dexter and Liam Salisbury who impacted the most with 2 goals each. Amongst the best for the Falcons were the previously mentioned Jack Lee, and Christopher Marson whilst the best for the JOCs were Nicholas Terrill, Daniel Cattolico and Brendan Ash. Albert Park will now put their winning streak on the line as they face league leaders in North Brunswick. St Johns will face rivals Masala, a side they haven’t managed to defeat since round 13 of the 2022 season.
The final match of the round saw the two teams who needed a win the most battle it out as Eley Park took on Masala. The first quarter saw both teams struggle to gain an advantage over the other, but it was Masala that was able to hold a small 5-point lead at quarter time. Masala was able to begin to take control of the match with a strong 5-goal second quarter which saw them extend their lead out to 28 points heading into halftime. As both teams headed for the rooms the downpour of rain began, setting the stage for a tough 2nd half.
Both teams headed out as the rain continued to fall and it was clear that the rain had changed dynamic of the game, as both teams struggled to gain the upper hand over the other. Masala however was able to gain a slight advantage with a 2-goal to 1 quarter, extending their lead out to 33 points. As the sun began to shine, Masala was able to take control of the change in conditions adding on another 3 goals whilst only allowing 1 goal from the Sharks. As the siren sounded, it was the Tigers that defeated the Sharks by 45 points in convincing fashion.
Among the best for Eley Park were Jacob Rose, Bailey Boeyer and Kane Scanlon. Amongst the best for Masala were Mitchell Rebecchi, Jordan Gibbon and Patrick Ellis. In front of goals for the Sharks Andrew Yeo, Drew Crawford and Angus Fowler all found their way onto the scoreboard, whilst for the Tigers multiple goal-kickers included Zac Pahos (3), Luke Decarne (3), Dave Velardo (2) and James Dekel (2). Eley Park will now host rivals Box Hill North who are currently on a great run of games. Masala will also host their rivals in St Johns in what is always a great matchup.

Matt Savage (Glen Eira Gryphons) – 150 Games
The Glen Eira Gryphons congratulate Matt Savage on achieving the 150-game milestone. A genuine star on and off the field, enjoy your 150th Dimmy and, just as importantly, the after-hours festivities!
The Glen Eira Gryphons congratulate Tom Clayson on achieving the 100 VAFA game milestone. Tom joined the Gryphs in 2022 and has been burning up and down the Packer Park wing in our reserves side for two years. A keen fisherman, Tom’s angling stories are always backed up with photographic proof. Enjoy your 100th Tommy! 150
Mitch Hughes (St Bernards) – 150 Games
Best Wishes to our Senior Captain Mitch Hughes on his 150th VAFA game this week. A St Bernards Junior, Mitch progressed through U/19 ranks winning VAFA state Under 19 honours in 2016 after making his senior debut in that season. A member of our 2018 Senior Premiership side Mitch was appointed Senior Captain in 2022 and this month was named back pocket in St Bernards ‘Team of the Decade’. Mitch’s versatility is a feature of his game. An attacking backman, a creative on baller and his ability to go forward when needed have made him an invaluable part of our senior line up. Well done, Mitch!
