SEASON 2024 - June 29

Club Facilities under review

On Friday last week, the AFL hosted a Football Facility forum involving representatives from nearly all Councils across the state and Community League CEO’s.

The focus of this gathering was to highlight to Council’s the growing need to invest in facilities and ovals for community football clubs, as well as expressing the benefits that such investment delivers to the community.

The AFL Government & Facilities department have a team of four staff, headed by Shane Ward and Jessie Doull who, along with AFL Vic CEO Greg Madigan and his team, are looking to work with Councils and Leagues across the State to co-ordinate the priorities for venue and facility development.

AFL are reviewing both demographic and football participation data across all Local Government Areas (LGA’s) to identify those areas where investment will make the greatest impact for both existing and future participants.

Shane Joules role at AFL is to look at unlocking any ‘green’ sights for potential new football ovals.

In helping evaluate our Club’s existing facilities and need for future investment, we have established a report template that considers the following key factors:

• Ground condition (risk assessment)

• Changerooms (player of both genders and umpires)

• Lighting (minimum lux levels)

• Scoreboard (electronic that connects to Play HQ and reduces volunteer time)

In assessing these assets, the considerations are:

...the growing need to invest in facilities

and ovals for community football clubs...

One such venue is Caulfield Racecourse and VAFA have been invited to make submission as a potential tenant for hosting VAFA matches.

Likewise, Boroondara Council invited VAFA to submit application to operate matches at Glenferrie Oval.

In both these instances, we are aware that there are individual VAFA Clubs who have had their eye on taking sole tenancy. We are certainly not in competition with our Clubs, but where the authorities seek outcomes other than single tenant clubs, we will always respond and aim to secure the venue for the betterment of the VAFA competition.

Outside of new green field sites, we are lobbying the AFL on behalf of our existing Club’s, ensuring that their sustainability is prioritised.

1. Meeting the AFL’s recommended minimum community facility standards

2. Accommodating all genders and ability to meet the new Fair Access policy

Social function rooms are not the priority need in this project, but we also understand the want to maximise commercial opportunities through match day functions etc.

We are very fortunate to have VAFA Life Member Phil Stevens volunteering his time to commence a facility audit on the venues of all 68 VAFA Clubs to assist our positioning. Phil will be known to many people as the VAFA CEO over a 17-year period, before moving on to Sportscover, where his focus was risk assessment of grounds. We could not be more grateful to have a person of Phil’s experience and skillsets making himself available to undertake this important task and trust that Clubs will support Phil when he makes contact.

Getting around to all venues and securing all the information is an enormous job that will take a significant amount of time, so we are prioritising those venues that we are aware of are in most need of an upgrade. We welcome feedback from Clubs highlighting their particular issues and potential need to be prioritised for a review.

Snowdogs find their snarl in William Buck Premier Men’s

The race to remain in Premier Men’s took another turn as Steve Alessio’s men chalked up their third win of the campaign.

St Bernards re-ignited their season with an impressive victory over University Blues at the Snake Pit.

The Snowdogs jumped out to a 15-point lead at the half as the Blues fought to hang in the game.

But a 5-goal third term broke it open as St Bernard’s added the first 4 majors of the final term – three to Edyn Sibbald – it was party time at the Snake Pit.

The Blues were shaded around the contest and their trademark efficiency Inside 50 deserted them without star forwards James Stewart and Eddie Ziebarth.

The final margin stretched out to 42 points - St Bernard’s leapfrogging OMs and Uni Blacks to clear the drop-zone on percentage, with a huge away game against rivals Fitzroy this weekend.

Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “I was really pleased with the effort of our team. The concentration and willingness of the boys to work together was great.

“Our depth continues to be tested but is already providing some rewards with debut players performing well at senior level. Hopefully, the win builds some belief in the team we can use for the remainder of the season.”

Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “St Bernard’s comprehensively beat us all over the park in all facets of the game. Smashed us in critical contests - both on the ground and in the air, ran harder than us and executed their skills more effectively.

“A pretty disappointing day for us. We’ll be looking to bounce back this week.”

Old Xaverians & St Kevin’s played out the thriller of the round at Toorak Park.

The opening term was a defensive struggle with just 3 goals kicked before the teams went goal-for-goal in a tight second term as neither team allowed the other to find their offensive rhythm. They headed to the major break locked together at 4.4 apiece.

SKOB threatened to sneak away but their 13-point three-quarter time lead disappeared when Xavs hit back with the opening 2 goals of the last to close back within 3 points and an upset was potentially on the cards.

But St Kevin’s have been the masters of tight finishes this season and, sure enough, they found the final goal of the game then successfully defended it as Xavs threw everything at them.

SKOB with their third win by a goal or less in their last 4 starts.

Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “I thought the game was a great reflection of the quality of our competition - high skill level and competitive all over the ground.

“Both teams had momentum at different stages of the game but fortunately, we were able to execute when it mattered later in the game.

“It’s always a difficult place to go and win at, so we were thrilled to be able to perform again in a tight finish and continue to build incredible belief in close games.”

Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Another super competitive high quality game of Ammo footy. It was tight from the outset with never more than a kick or two in it all day.

“I was really pleased with the effort and pressure we brought over 4 quarters, but ultimately couldn’t find enough avenues forward with the amount of looks we had to kick a score deserving of the win.

“Certainly take a lot of positives out of the game against a quality opposition but disappointed not to get the result in the end.”

Collegians returned to the winners’ list, ultimately prevailing over Old Melburnians at Harry Trott Oval.

OMs had the better of a tight first term to lead by 5 points before the Lions booted 5 goals to 2 and opened up a 14-point half-time lead.

Both sides added 4 goals in the third term as the contest lifted –Collegians by a solitary point at the last break as the visitors eyed off an upset win.

But the reigning premiers put the foot down in the final quarter, slamming on 7.5 to 0.3 in a dominant display of finishing as they careered away to a 45-point win.

Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “It was a good hard-fought win. It was very much an arm wrestle until the last quarter, where we were able to get on top around the contest and then get our running game going.

“Will Mayhood continues his great form and Ben Van Twest played his best game for the club, providing a lot of drive from the backline all day. It was also terrific to see Tom Sargeant and Jack Meacham debut. Both fellas showed they are more than capable at the level.

“Huge game for us versus St Kevin’s next week, which we can’t wait for.”

Paul Satterley (OMs): “We were really proud of our effort for the first 3 quarters - we competed in all facets of the game.

“On reflection, losing a couple key players early put us under pressure & full credit to Collegians who ran all over us late, led by Mayhood, Bazzani & Boucher.”

Old Brighton took care of business early against University Blacks at Melbourne University Oval.

The Tonners flew out of the blocks with 6 unanswered goals, making a strong statement on a road trip that can be tricky to deal with.

The league-leaders added a further 3 majors to start the second term before Blacks responded to reduce the half-time deficit to 43 points.

Any thoughts of a second-half comeback were snuffed out when Old Brighton rammed home 7 unanswered goals in the third term – giving them an incredible 13 goals to 0 at one end of the ground.

The margin rocketed as high as 98 early in the last before Blacks dug in, booting 6 of the last 7 goals to reduce the final margin to a more respectable 69 points as the Tonners sent another frightening message to the rest of the competition.

Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Always a tough challenge out at Uni Oval, but we prepared really well and were able to get off to a really strong start. We were able to get some control at stoppages which fed opportunity up forward and then our defenders set up well behind that. I thought we had an even contribution across the group which I’m very happy about.”

Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We were soundly beaten by a better team for 3 quarters. It was great to see some good patches in the 2nd quarter and a very good last quarter for our boys. At our best, we are capable of playing very good football.”

The final match saw Old Scotch jump up to third after pulling away in the second half against Fitzroy at Brunswick Street.

The Cardinals led by 3 goals at the first break then booted the first 2 of the second term as they threatened to put the game away.

But the Roys showed their trademark pluck and responded with the last 3 goals of the opening half to close within 9 points.

Old Scotch booted 4 goals to 1 to pull out to a 26-point break at the last change, then motored to the line with 6 goals to 1 in the final quarter, adding precious percentage with an eye-catching 58-point win.

Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “We jumped out of the blocks really well in the first quarter with some solid ball movement and scoreboard pressure.

“Full credit to Fitzroy who lifted their pressure in the second quarter to take the points for that term.

“Our ability to make some adjustments mid-game and respond positively in the second half was most pleasing. Our latest 19-yearold debutant, Ollie Badr, was brilliant in his first match for the club.”

Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “We worked hard to be in the game at half time but couldn’t go on with it. A good challenge for us however against a strong opposition. Julian Turner was influential across half forward and Tom Wilson was tireless in the midfield.”

Monash shake off the blues, as Cobras lose their venom

Round 10 showcased the improvement of developing sides, as teams met for the second time this year. After losing to the Old Yarra Cobras by 64 points in Round 2, Monash Blues got their revenge this time around, defeating the Cobras to record their first win in William Buck Premier Women’s.

Caulfield Grammarians travelled to Piranha Park to take on Coburg, looking to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Having gone down by 5 points in the season opener, Coburg were out for revenge and riding the high of a big victory last week. Unfortunately for the Burgs however, it proved too difficult a task.

A scoreless first quarter had Coburg on the back foot early, trailing by 8 points. The second term saw their intensity lift as they worked their way back into the contest, although inaccuracy in front of goals saw frustrations increase until Malaya Rodezno saluted late in the quarter to kick Coburg’s first major and bring the margin back to 10 points at the main break.

The Burgs would be disappointed to again fail to register a score in the third term, as Caulfield kicked away to establish a 24-point lead going into the final change. In the last quarter, Caulfield put the foot down and ran away to record a significant win in the context of their season, coming away 48-point victors.

Sarah Kenny starred with four goals, as they registered six individual goal kickers for the day. Brigitte Wolhuter was a standout in defence, named best afield, while fellow defenders Isla Mottram and Charlie Anderson also contributed to what was one of Caulfield’s best defensive games of the season, restricting Coburg to just 12 points.

For the home side, deputy vice-captain Kiana Minchin set a strong example for her teammates and was rewarded by being named their best player of the day.

At Victoria Park, St Kevin’s toppled Kew by 45 points, once again demonstrating the clear gap between the top two sides and the rest of the competition.

Kew started ferociously, quickly getting the ball into their forward 50 where Dakota Villiva was able to kick the first goal within the opening minutes of the game. This acted as a wakeup call to St Kevin’s, who launched into gear from the next centre bounce, responding soon after with their own goal from Sarah Cameron.

The rest of the first quarter was an arm wrestle with both teams having periods of ascendancy but struggling to score, until Sarah Cameron kicked her second to earn St Kevin’s an 8-point lead going into the first break.

In the second quarter, Kew were unable to get the ball past St Kevin’s wall, with each of their attempts at attack intercepted by Saints defenders. On the other hand, St Kevin’s managed to get repeated forward entries which led to two majors.

St Kevin’s commanded the second half, kicking five additional goals while restricting Kew to just one, in another performance that reinforced St Kevins’ position as flag favourites.

Jessica Joyce was an absolute ball magnet for St Kevin’s, delivering silver service to her forward teammates such as Sarah Cameron, who finished the day with an impressive six goals.

For Kew, Georgia Wyett never gave up, while Dakota Villiva continued to impress despite receiving a hard tag, contributing both of her team’s goals.

Old Scotch got back to their winning ways, defeating West Brunswick by 31 points.

West Brunswick showed up ready to fight, bringing immense pressure in the first term that had the Stars making uncharacteristic errors as they scrambled to keep up with the visitors. Charlotte Carney slotted two wonderful goals to give the Magpies a 5-point buffering going into the second term.

The second started similarly, with Melissa Lindsay getting on the end of an early goal to extend the lead to 11 points. Things looked good for West Brunswick; however, it wouldn’t last. Old Scotch clamped down defensively, and returned to their typical run and carry style, to kick the next three goals and take a 9-point lead into the main break.

Old Scotch continued to hit the scoreboard in the second half, all while keeping West Brunswick scoreless, to notch another convincing win.

Despite how the 50-19 scoreline reads, it was a positive performance by West Brunswick, who had impressive passages of play and showed significant improvement from their previous encounter.

Jade Wise stole the show for Old Scotch, finishing with two majors, while Matilda Hammond won the coach’s votes for West Brunswick.

Lauren Atkinson

At Frearson Oval, Monash Blues attained their first win in William Buck Premier Women’s, overcoming Old Yarra Cobras by 14 points.

It was congested footy in the first half, with both sides struggling to find avenues to score and neither side converting a major. Monash led by a single behind, leaving everything to play for in the second half.

Both teams finally found their first goal in the third term, with both coming as rewards for exceptional defensive pressure in their respective forward 50s. A kick-in gone wrong allowed Clare Konstanty to get through another goal for Monash, and the Blues took a 9-point lead into the final term.

The Cobras came hard at the Blues in the fourth, however, Monash defenders stood tall, only conceding a single behind despite Old Yarra dominating the territory battle. Sarah-Jade Rose got on the end of a spirited team goal to seal the game for Monash, resulting in the team’s first win at the top level.

Brook Thompson and Emily Conroy led the way for Monash, while Laura Quinton and Lara Moussa were brave in defeat.

The weather gods were kind on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Mugarland, as Melbourne University hosted Collegians, in what shaped as an important game for both teams. The Mugars sat in 9th spot having recorded just the one victory so far in 2024 despite some more competitive performances in recent weeks, while Collegians were hoping to reclaim their spot in the top four, briefly dropping to 5th after Caulfield’s win on the Saturday.

It was a scrappy start to the opening quarter as both teams tried to assert themselves around the contest, but it was Collegians who held the upper hand, kicking two goals to one.

The second term was also hotly contested, with Melbourne University kicking the only goal late in the term after a brilliant smother and lead up kick inside 50 saw the home crowd up and about, with neither side able to be separated at 14-14.

Unfortunately for the home side, that proved to be their final score for the day as Collegians ran away with it in the second half, showcasing the difference in quality between the sides to record a hard-fought 14-point win.

Chelsea McDermott put the icing on the cake with a final goal after some excellent defensive forward pressure from Collegians led to a turnover.

103-gamer Krystal Russell was best on ground in a dominant ruck display, while superstar Brooke Randall continues to shine in what is unfolding as another fantastic season for the Mugars’ number 12.

PREMIER B MEN’S

Crackerjack contest looms as Bloods, Ts continue winning ways

Old Trinity’s fourth consecutive win has set up an enticing one-v-two clash with Old Haileybury as the Premier B season approaches a two-week pause.

With just one win spanning second to sixth on the ladder there’s barely any margin for error at the top of the table - with only Old Haileybury (a game clear in first with a healthy percentage of 150.48%) able to drop a game yet be sure of holding their position.

Old Trinity, in second spot, were challenged by a plucky St Bedes/Mentone Tigers which, despite their winless record, has impressed in the last few weeks, falling agonisingly short in games against De La Salle and Williamstown CYMS.

“I thought they’d improved enormously from the first time we played them,” Old Trinity coach Donald McDonald said.

Despite a +28 inside 50 advantage to Trinity, both sides booted five goals to the long break at Mentone Reserve, consistent midfielder Josh Cowan racking up 20 of his 34 disposals in the first half alone - along with a cracking long-range goal from the boundary.

But a seven-goal-to-four third quarter had the visitors 17 points clear at the final break, a buffer they built upon in the final term to run out 17.14 (116) to 12.12 (84) victors.

Hugh Beasley (five goals) and Dom Payman (three) led the charge for Old Trinity, while Tom Wenn was dominant with 33 disposals and nine clearances.

After a torrid run from Round 2 to Round 7 where the Tigers lost every game by an average of 53 points, there’s green shoots for Brad Berry’s youthful group - with 16 players of the side on Saturday under the age of 22, ten of those under 19s-qualified.

“The young group that I had earlier in the season - once they got us early in that third quarter, that would have been a 70- or 80-point defeat,” Berry said.

19-year-old Sandringham Dragon Max Hoult - an exciting prospect who was in the mix for last month’s mid-season draftmade his St Bedes/Mentone debut and kicked two goals, while athletic forward Jack Behnk continued his impressive season with three majors.

Speaking of impressive seasons, Old Haileybury has now peeled off eight straight wins after its 0-2 start to 2024, accounting for Beaumaris in a low-scoring game in Caulfield South.

With injured pair Brede Seccull and Jack Bell unavailable, Big V nominee Brodie Steele (33 disposals and nine marks) and Josh Gasparini (36 disposals, ten clearances) starred, while Charlton Harrop was mighty with 22 disposals, 12 marks and four goals.

But aside from Harrop, the Bloods found it difficult to apply serious scoreboard pressure in the 8.14 (62) to 6.6 (42) win,

thanks to a Sharks backline that conceded just eight goals from a whopping 70 Old Haileybury inside 50s.

After five goals last week, James Magner was kept to one major, while spearhead Durras Seccull was kept goalless for the first time this season by a brilliant Cal Linehan (23 disposals, 22 intercepts, 11 one percenters).

“He was brilliant, he’s back to his defensive best,” said Sharks assistant coach Justin Wilson.

Old Haileybury coach Daniel Ward was pleased with his team’s ability to wrest back control of the game after a contested first half, the Bloods recording 15 scoring shots to seven after the long break.

“The ability to hang in there and get it on our terms was pleasing in the end.”

Should Old Haileybury defeat Old Trinity this Saturday, Old Ivanhoe will be waiting in the wings to snatch up second spot after saluting in a clash with fellow Premier C graduate Old Camberwell.

The Hoers, equal on 28 points with the Ts yet some 25 percentage points in arrears, broke free from the Wellers thanks to a five-goal run spanning from the 12-minute mark of the third term to the 12-minute mark of the fourth, securing a 12.11 (89) to 9.5 (59) win at Gordon Barnard Reserve.

Somewhat remarkably, the Hoers are now 6-0 on the road this year, having only won one of their four games at home - Round 3 v St Bedes/Mentone.

In alignment with trends in the AFL, both the Hoers and Wellers deployed taggers in the midfield last Saturday, Old Ivanhoe’s Harrison Reid going to Jimmy Allen while Billy Murphy received plenty of attention from Old Camberwell’s Thomas Oliver at stoppages.

“Jimmy still had his 20-or-so touches, (but) ‘Harro’ (Reid) probably curbed his influence,” said Old Ivanhoe coach Jarrod Gieschen.

Next week’s clash with Old Geelong back at Chelsworth Park sees more than just four points up for grabs, with club icon Mal Mitris to celebrate his 200th game for the club.

His sister Lexi has been the longtime club physio, while his father Vic is a regular at club lunches - and Mal won’t exactly be unfamiliar with the fanfare that comes with the occasion, having come out of retirement to play in the run to Old Ivanhoe’s 2023 Premier C flag.

“They’re just a great family around our footy club - it’s more about Mal and the support around him that we’ll go and recognise,” said Giechen.

Old Camberwell will need to secure a win over the CYs at Fearon Reserve to stay within the chasing pack of clubs on six wins, which has proved to be a challenging trip in recent weeks.

Williamstown CYMS will be out to respond after falling away after half time at Como Park, Old Geelong kicking 11 goals to two after half time to win 17.9 (111) to 8.2 (50).

It was the third term that did the damage, the OGs holding the CYs to 33 disposals, 13 marks and 6 inside 50s in a dominant half-an-hour of football in which they kicked 6.2 (38) to 1.0 (6).

“We connected so well with our forwards, and they converted,” said coach Nathan Brown.

Three of Matt Wallis’ four goals came in that third quarter, while Connor Dixon (three goals), Harrison Kol (27 disposals, two goals) and Sam Barnett (26 disposals, two goals) caused trouble for Williamstown.

Playing on the expanses of Como Park was a challenge for a CYs side adept at the contest yet developing the ability to successfully manage the uncontested side of the game.

“They’re a fantastic outside team…they’re a very ball-hungry side,” said coach Con Terzoglou.

Zac Provest continued his super year, punting four goals, while Zayne Galea presented strongly in a new role up forward, having been deployed down back for much of the season.

Finally, De La Salle coach Nick Hyland was spared the stress of another nailbiter, his side cantering home to defeat Caulfield Grammarians 16.19 (115) to 8.4 (52).

De La led by 31 points at the final break yet piled on 8.3 (51) to 3.1 (19) in the final term for its largest win of the season - and only the second result since Round 5 that hasn’t been decided by ten points or fewer.

“It was a strange feeling late in the game when it wasn’t up for grabs!” said Hyland.

“I hope (the close games) hold us in good stead - we’ve been in those positions and learned some good things along the way.”

Christian Algeri led an even spread of goalkickers with three, while Thomas Filipovic was best afield.

De La takes on Beaumaris this weekend at Banksia Reserve - where Hyland’s squad secured “the best win of the season” in Round 9 last year, doing enough to hold off the Sharks late to win by nine points.

Caulfield takes on St Bedes/Mentone at home, Old Ivanhoe hosts Old Geelong, Williamstown CYMS faces Old Camberwell and Old Trinity takes on Old Haileybury in a game that promises to shape the top spots of the ladder.

Aquinas cause an upset, while the CY’s streak continues

Round 10 of the VAFA Prem B Women’s competition delivered another exciting chapter in what has been an impressive season thus far. As teams jockey for finals positions, the round featured dominant displays, surprising upsets, and hard-fought battles that showcased the league’s competitive balance and talent depth.

Aquinas secured a much-needed and impressive victory over Old Xaverians, prevailing 8.8 (56) to 4.2 (26) in a match that saw them execute a near-flawless game plan. From the outset, Aquinas demonstrated a commitment to aggressive ball movement and relentless pressure, setting the tone early and never letting up.

Aquinas’ offensive pressure was particularly effective, with Meg Dargan proving to be a constant threat inside 50. Her ability to find space and convert opportunities into five goals was a highlight, finishing the game with a commanding tally.

Old Xaverians, despite the loss, showed periods of competitive play. The midfield and backline worked tirelessly to stem the flow of Aquinas’ attack, but their efforts were not enough to bridge the gap. Standout performances from Olivia Benston, Ella Neuwirth, and Chiara Chiarelli were clear throughout the match.

Fitzroy continued their ascent up the ladder with a solid 6.6 (42) to 2.6 (18) victory over Beaumaris. Their structured play and disciplined approach were evident throughout the game, allowing them to control the tempo and keep Beaumaris at bay.

Fitzroy’s midfield was once again instrumental, dominating the stoppages and providing consistent delivery to their forwards. Jaime Nelson, Eliza James, and Olivia Brilliant were amongst the best on the ground for the day for their consistency and ability to lift the standards.

Beaumaris struggled to match Fitzroy’s intensity and execution. Despite valiant efforts, especially from goal-kickers Rosie Byrne and Samantha McLean, they were unable to generate enough scoring opportunities to threaten Fitzroy’s lead. The defeat leaves Beaumaris in a challenging position as they look to regroup and make a late-season push.

In the marquee matchup of the round, Williamstown CYMS asserted their dominance over St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers with a 6.9 (45) to 2.4 (16) victory, extending their undefeated streak. The win not only solidified their position at the top of the ladder, but also sent a strong message to the rest of the competition that they remain the team to beat.

Williamstown’s success was built on their defensive solidity and efficient ball use. Kasey Maddock, Stella Cossey, and Jaimi Paten were key to their team’s success, showcasing great tenacity and skill throughout the match.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers struggled to penetrate Williamstown’s well-organised defence. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to generate enough forward momentum. The loss highlights areas for improvement as they aim to refine their strategy and execution for the upcoming rounds.

Old Geelong maintained their momentum with a convincing 6.9 (45) to 3.4 (22) win over Westbourne Grammarians, showcasing their ability to perform consistently under pressure. The match was a testament to Old Geelong’s balanced approach, combining strong defensive efforts with efficient forward play.

Brooke Mckay, Amy Halaby, and Sophia Rothfield were instrumental in Old Geelong’s victory and were amongst the best on the ground for the day.

Westbourne showed resilience and determination, with the midfielders providing moments of brilliance. Temeika Cathery, Kiara Henry, and Jade Desira were always threatening near the ball and provided constant pressure on the opposition. However, Old Geelong’s superior structure and execution proved decisive, allowing them to secure a valuable victory and maintain their push for a top-four finish.

As the season progresses towards the business end, the competition is heating up. Williamstown CYMS have established themselves as the team to beat, boasting an undefeated record and a formidable lineup. Fitzroy’s consistent performances keep them firmly in the hunt, while Old Geelong’s consistency and form makes them a key contender for the flag.

Round 11 will see Aquinas face Beaumaris in a must-win clash for both sides. Aquinas, buoyed by their recent victory, will look to capitalise on home-ground advantage, while Beaumaris aims to rebound from consecutive losses.

Old Geelong hosts Fitzroy in a blockbuster battle. Both teams are in top form, with Fitzroy’s dynamic midfield set to challenge Old Geelong’s balanced approach. This match could have significant implications for the ladder.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers take on Westbourne Grammarians in what should be a fairly even contest. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will seek to regain momentum after a loss, while Westbourne aims to build on their competitive efforts and secure another win to climb the ladder towards finals.

Finally, Old Xaverians face the daunting task of halting Williamstown CYMS’ winning streak. Williamstown’s formidable defence and clinical forward line make them clear favourites, but Old Xaverians will look to cause an upset at home.

Movement in the top four as Parkdale lose two in a row

Round 10 saw more great football in Premier C with many close contests fought across competition. At this stage of the season, sides are beginning to feel the effects of players taking a mid-season hiatus over the equator, so teams without depth in their list will need to find a way to ensue momentum.

In a thrilling match up where both sides fought tooth and nail, it was AJAX who came out on top, defeating PEGS by 14 points. The monstrous task of facing AJAX on their home turf didn’t deter PEGS who came out firing in the first quarter with three goals to two.

AJAX turned things around in the second term to find themselves with a 15-point lead at the main break. PEGS narrowed this gap in the third with five straight goals, and another goal early in the fourth term saw the scores level.

However, AJAX responded and continued their good form in 2024 to get themselves over the line with Jordan Cohen at the helm leading the charge with 6 majors. This win sees AJAX sitting in 2nd place, only a small percentage out of top spot, whilst PEGS’ loss hurts their final prospects, but they are certainly not out of the race yet.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon had a good day out at Marcellin College, coming home with a 35-point victory over Marcellin. The first quarter was tight with both sides eager for the contest and showing their intent early. However, the Gryphons picked up some momentum in the second term, limiting Marcellin in front of goals and extending their lead to 19-points at the main break.

This continued in the third quarter with Marcellin again remaining goalless whilst the Gryphons continued to pile on the goals at the bookends of the quarter. Marcellin fared better in the final term, however the day belonged to the Gryphons who claimed the four points.

In his 100th game, Matthew Capetola was among the best players for Marcellin, whilst for the victorious Gryphons, Sean Bass impressed up forward with four goals to continue his good season.

Old Carey produced a significant 60-point victory to claim the four points against the Monash Blues. Old Carey started the game well with two early goals, putting on a dominant display in the first three quarters to lead by 62 points at three quarter-time.

The game was all but sewn up in Old Carey’s favour, however Monash didn’t go down without a fight and had a competitive last term matching the home side on the scoreboard. Despite the Blues’ best efforts, it wasn’t enough as Old Carey won comfortably, ensuring they retained 1st place with a favourable percentage.

Lachy Godden and Riley Thompson each kicked 3 goals for Old Carey, whilst Alex Bennett, James Flett and Nixon Hall were among the best on ground for the Blues.

A massive top-four encounter saw the Hampton Rovers defeat the Parkdale Vultures by 30 points, which sees a shuffle in the top 4 order – the Rovers claiming 3rd while the Vultures slip to 4th.

The first half was incredibly even with not much separating the two sides. It was clear this game would come down to the wire and both sides were hungry for the contest. The Rovers broke away in the third quarter as the Vultures were inaccurate in front of goal, taking a 10-point lead into the final term.

The Rovers built on this momentum and dominated in the final stages of the match with four goals in the last quarter as Parkdale could only manage seven behinds. Jai Elcock was key up front for the defeated Vultures with four goals, whilst Max Coughlin and Thomas Ellinghaus were among the best players for Hampton.

In an incredibly close game, Oakleigh almost claimed their first win of the season but ultimately were defeated by Mazenod by 17 points. On paper, Mazenod were clear favourites to win this game but were seriously challenged by a competitive Oakleigh outfit.

The two teams could not be separated in the first three quarters, matching each other’s efforts and pressure, with the only difference being Oakleigh’s accuracy on the scoreboard as Mazenod struggled to convert their opportunities into goals. However, Mazenod found more fight in the final quarter kicking five goals to Oakleigh’s two to see themselves over the line and holding onto fifth spot, just one game behind the Parkdale Vultures.

Hayden Boyce kicked three goals for Mazenod whilst Oakleigh had a variety of players share the goals around on what was a promising day for this side.

The action continues in Round 11 with Glen Eira/Old McKinnon hosting AJAX at Packer Park. The Gryphons have done well in Premier C winning three of their last six games, whilst AJAX will be looking for the win to keep their top-two spot.

Marcellin meet the Parkdale Vultures in a big game for both sides. Marcellin have something to prove looking for their third win of the season, whilst the Vultures too need to redeem themselves after two consecutive losses.

It will be an interesting battle between 9th and 10th as Oakleigh search for their first win of the season against the Monash Blues.

Elsewhere, PEGS host a dominant Old Carey side, whilst Mazenod travel to the beach to play the Hampton Rovers.

Tickets to the double-header at Elsternwick Park on Saturday, featuring the Premier B-Division 3 v Bendigo FNL and Holmesglen U19 Showpiece, are now on sale at VAFA.com.au. All four matches will be streamed live on the VAFA website.

Big V Premier Men’s Team

Greg Hutchison has named an extended team for the Big V Premier Men’s side to take on the PFL, with the interchange to be reduced and announced on the VAFA website on Friday.

“We’ve got a good blend of youngsters and more seasoned players. We have some first-timers, which is always exciting, plus some veterans from the successful 2023 campaign who can provide experience and help fast-track our rookies” said Hutchison.

“There were some players that weren’t available last year but are this time around, and they get their opportunity to put their hand up too.

“It’s a great honour to be selected and something that the players and their clubs should rightly celebrate.”

Big V Premier Women’s Team

VAFA Big V Women’s coach Paul Groves and his coaching panel have picked a fast, versatile line-up to cross the Nullarbor and take on the Perth Football League at Steel Blue Oval, Bassendean on Sunday July 7.

12 of the 25 players pulled on the Big V last season and Groves is keen to keep developing this core group.

“Ultimately, we want to reward girls playing exceptional VAFA footy and we’ll try to mould positions and structure around the talent we’ve got,” said Groves.

Big V Premier B – Division 3 Team

The VAFA’s Big V Premier B-Division 3 Men’s coach Luke Mahoney has named his team of 24 to face the Bendigo Football League at Elsternwick Park on Saturday, July 6.

The line-up is stacked with quality on every line and Mahoney, a former Victorian rep player himself, can’t wait to have it all at his disposal.

“There’s plenty of talent across the divisions so it’s been a mammoth task to pull this list together. Our starting point is that this game will be the equivalent of a high-level Premier game. So we need to pick guys who can thrive in the equivalent of a Premier Final,” said Luke.

Zoe McCurdy (Caulfield Grammarians)

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

The VAFA congratulates Zoe McCurdy from Caulfield Grammarians Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 11 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Zoe starred in her sides commanding win on the weekend to earn herself a spot in the best, yet again this season, in another comprehensive four quarter effort. What the Club said:

A product of the Coates league pathways, Zoe has been ripping kicks left right and centre since a young age at Park Orchard. She played her first game in Caulfield colours in Round 2 vs Collegians and hasn’t looked back. Strong at the contest, competitive by nature and with dash, Zoe has been a key addition to the Fields in 2024. Listed with the Southern Saints at VFLW level, her talent has already been recognised by plenty. Always the first to crack a joke and a smile, the group has welcomed her in with open arms and can’t wait to see where her raking left boot and internal drive takes her for the rest of this season and beyond.

Caulfield Grammarians Women’s Coach, Dani Distefano said, “Zoe has been an amazing addition to our squad this year. On the field, Zoe plays with no fear, driving her legs at every opportunity, and hitting targets all over the ground with her booming left boot. Off the field, Zoe is known for her quirky humour and infectious energy. She just loves her footy and it shows in the way she attacks the game and gets around her teammates.”

Devils miss an opportunity, as Bears turn-around continues

Round 10 in the Division 1 Men’s competition had teams find their feet again after the some of the upsets of the season were on display last week. At this stage sides can beat anyone on their day and there are still seven teams who can make a legitimate case for finals.

UHS-VU recorded a gutsy win away over the Parkside Devils by 12 points. The first quarter had the intensity of a finals match between two top-four sides wanting to respond after losses from the previous week.

Not much could separate both sides who missed a couple of chances in front of goal early. However, it was the Devils by a point at quarter time. In the second term, the Devils were scrappy by foot in their back half which the Vultures pounced on giving them a game-high lead of 23 points at one stage.

Ben Dimattina had an influential term in the midfield and Jacob Hunt worked hard in the forward line for UHSVU. Meanwhile, the Devils were never out of it with Luciano Logozzo taking the game on whenever he was given space in the back half and two late goals for the Devils gave them some momentum.

It was the Devils who came off the blocks well in the second half and really dominated after half time, having 10 scoring shots to one in the third quarter. Yet their wayward kicking and a collection of missed opportunities saw the scores level heading into the final quarter.

Ruckman Lewis Daniels really stood up aerially for the Devils and took it up to opposing ruckman Liam Starzer around the ground who is having a great season.

Forward pressure from the Devils was the key in dominating the inside 50 battle as Ciaran Cotter and Benedict Douglas provided great heat around the contest but they couldn›t quite capitalise, only managing a single goal in the third term.

Credit must go to the Vultures defenders as James Gilfillan and Benjamin Cracknell did superbly under pressure.

With it all tied up at three-quarter time, the Vultures needed to recapture the momentum and it was Brandon Jackson who has proved to be the fourth-quarter king in most games who kicked the first two goals of the last term.

The Devils though kicked the next two to get them back in front but the Vultures proved why they are the number one team in the competition capitalising when they had the chance with Ned Couper-Johnston kicking the sealer 40 metres out from goal.

UHS-VU running away 11.10 (76) to 8.16 (64) victors.

The Kew Bears continue to hunt for a spot in the top four after defeating the West Brunswick Magpies by 32 points. It was a stalemate in the opening term with both sides applying heat around the ball and with defensive structures well applied it was the Bears by two points at quarter time.

The Magpies efficiency inside 50 was great in the second term as they kicked the first three goals, but the Bears’ midfield replied with a strong second patch led by Jack Delbridge. Kew slammed home the last five goals of the second quarter to carry an 18-point half time advantage.

The second half was all the visiting Bears though, as William Llewelyn was the story of the day kicking seven goals and proved difficult for the Magpies defence.

There was no catching Kew down the stretch in this contest, the Bears asserting themselves as a finals contender with a 13.7 (85) to 8.5 (53) win away from home.

The Old Peninsula Pirates had a great win over the Preston Bullants by 47 points. The first quarter was a tight tussle between two strong midfields as the Pirates carried a narrow one-goal lead into quarter time.

In the second term, the midfield of the Pirates dominated with the help of ruckman Lochie Baczyk giving great service to Jake Lovett, Hugh Peacock and Kurt Thiele who continued their great seasons.

The Preston Bullants’ defence couldn’t handle the heat from the likes of Bailey Payze who was the clear best on ground kicking booting four majors and continues to prove himself as one the toughest matchups in the section.

The elite pressure remained throughout the duration of the match as Old Peninsula peppered the scoreboard, but inaccurate kicking perhaps made the scoreboard look a little kinder to Preston.

The Pirates continue to fight for a top-four opening, on the back of this 12.22 (94) to 7.5 (47) win.

Prahran defeated the Old Yarra Cobras by 56 points at Koonung Reserve.

From the start, Prahran got on top in the middle of the ground with Mackenzie Mayne having another great performance and his side were able to lock the ball in their forward half. The visitors kicking the opening three goals of the contest in just the first eight minutes.

Prahran had plenty of forward options at their disposal, one of which being Taylor Bamford who kicked four goals and Ethan

Plaza knowing his way in front of the sticks booting three of his own.

It wasn’t the day for the Old Yarra Cobras as their defenders were isolated one-on-one due to Prahran’s rapid ball movement. Winger Thomas Seaman was impressive being able to link with handball chains through the middle of the ground.

The margin only grew quarter by quarter and ultimately as the final siren sounded, Old Yarra fell well short 5.10 (40) to Prahran’s 14.12 (96)

Ormond got the job done over the Therry Penola Lions by 69 points at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. It was a great fourquarter effort from the Monders this week as their pressure was a real focal point for the side as youngster Jack Mason had a great game in the midfield.

Their connection inside 50 is a huge strength this season and was again proven on the weekend with Thomas Natsikas kicking five goals and James Tsakonas with four goals adding to his hefty tally this season.

The loss of Therry Penola defender Jack Ford continues to hurt the side as they couldn’t cope with the avalanche of entries.

To the Lions credit they were very gallant in their first half efforts, trailing by just 18 points. But the Monders proved themselves as the stronger side after the main break, putting together a 20.8 (128) to 7.17 (59) win.

The footy continues in Round 11 as Parkside go up against an in-form Prahran team at home. Prahran’s game at the moment seems to be clicking along nicely whilst the Devils would be rueing the missed opportunity against the Vultures after dominating for most of the second half last week.

The Monders forward line is firing and will go up against the Old Yarra Cobras who are searching for their second win of the season at E.E Gunn Reserve.

UHS-VU are back at home taking on the Pirates in what will be a great challenge for the sixth-placed side. The ruck matchup between the in-form Lochie Baczyk and Liam Starzer will be an intriguing one.

It’s a must-win game for the Preston Bullants as they face a hungry Magpies side. The Magpies defence will have some work to do as they face the challenge of forwards Alex Johnston and Tom Hill.

Meanwhile, the Bears take on Therry Penola at home. The fifth-placed Bears side are playing a great brand of football at the moment and are sensing a chance to get in the top four.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

A round of high scoring affairs

There were goals aplenty in Round 10 of the Division 1 Women’s competition with high scoring clashes across the board. Teams are dispersing further along the ladder. Most notably Old Brighton remains 2 games clear at the top, while a victory to the Parkdale Vultures propels them comfortably into fourth spot, with now a two-win buffer ahead of fifth placed Old Haileybury.

With just six rounds to go until the finals series teams are sharpening up those rough edges to find their seasonbest form. Old Brighton have made a strong statement all season that they are a force to be reckoned with, but the likes of Marcellin who have won three on the trot, are sending a message that they will be competitive come September.

The round kicked off at Brighton Beach Oval, where Old Brighton absolutely rampaged the competition, producing a 117-point victory over an unfamiliar Collegians outfit. Old Brighton went full throttle right from the first bounce with a 3.10 first quarter.

The goals came in hot from all angles, with the Tonners extending their lead at every break. Lily Tait and Caterina O’Brien had a field day with 5 goals each, propelling them comfortably into second and third place respectively on the competition’s leading goal kicker tally; only to be surpassed by Marcellin’s Zoe Glascott. Sienna Courtney and India Tait joined the sharpshooters in the best for the match.

The Tonners looked as impressive as ever with their cohesion around the ground, in what was not just an impressive attack on the scoreboard, but also a consolidated defensive effort to keep the ball well out of the Lion’s forward arc.

Collegians lacked the competitive spirit they are known to deliver week in-week out, scoring just one goal for the match off the boot of Lauren Kenneally. Lauren’s efforts alongside Zoe Gurr and Caitlin Galt were noted on a tough day out.

After a comprehensive four-quarter display, the scoreboard reflected a 17.21 (123) to 1.0 (6) win to Old Brighton. The Tonners are yet to drop a game this season, with every win bolstering their percentage. Will they fly

through all the way to finals, or will there be an opponent able to defeat the ladder leaders over the remaining 6 rounds of the home and away season?

It was a little bit of history repeating itself out at Princes Park on Saturday morning, with Old Haileybury falling to the Parkdale Vultures on home soil, as they did a number of weeks ago. The score differential back in Round 7 was 30 points, as it was again on the weekend with the final score reflecting 30-60.

Both sides were looking to break a streak of losses in this match up, alas for Haileybury it wasn’t meant to be. They did well early to take a narrow 2-point advantage into the first break, however, couldn’t sustain the firepower of the Vultures from the second term onwards.

After settling into the match and finding their groove, Parkdale were looking in good form and did well to control the play from the centre. They doubled the Blood’s scoring opportunities with ensued them doubling their final score as well.

Sienna Symons impressed in front of the big sticks, slotting 3 for the day for the Vultures, whilst Lucy Burgess contributed 2 of her own. At the other end, Old Haileybury’s Pulli Gardiyawasam was the only dual goal scorer for her side. Sienna Allan and Ella Gown sit alongside Pulli as the standout performers for Old Haileybury.

The premiership quarter was when the Vultures really made their move, piling on 3.4 to extend their lead out to 27 points. Lucy Burgess, Hannah McCorquodale and Isabella Daddo were deemed best afield for the Parkdale Vultures in a win that comfortably secures them fourth spot for now, while they are in touching distance of third place.

Delving into the final match up of Round 10 sees Marcellin sore to their eighth win of the season in an annihilation of the Old Melburnians. The Eagles stormed home to a percentage boosting 75-point win at home.

Marcellin’s onslaught was spearheaded by the usual stars of a well-rounded squad, namely: T Zagontinos, Charlotte McGlip, Alana Pane, and Zoe Glascott. This side steps up week on week and has stamped their authority as a powerhouse of the competition this season.

A majority of goals for the victors were scored by T Zagontinos and Zoe Glascott, contributing 7 and 3 majors respectively. Accuracy served them well early on, with the Eagles scoring 4.2 in the opening term to only continue and grow their lead throughout the match.

Georgia Dunlop kicked the lone goal for Old Melburnians that came late in the final stages of the game to narrow the closing margin by 6 points and spark some confidence back into her side.

In an impressive display on a sunny Saturday morning, Marcellin ran away victors over Old Melburnians for the third time this season, recording their second highest score (83) to defeat the OM’s who only managed the 8 points for the match.

Round 11 sees some tough match ups, before teams will have an opportunity to reset with a league-wide Bye round. Old Melburnians will host ladder leaders, Old Brighton at the home of the VAFA, Elsternwick Park. With OM’s struggling to insert themselves into games on the scoreboard, this could be a thumping by the Tonners who are yet to experience a defeat in 2024.

Old Haileybury will be looking to get back on the winners list when they come up against an in-form Marcellin side, with the opportunity to break back into the top four on the line. Meanwhile the Parkdale Vultures will host Collegians in a middle order clash that could be one to watch.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S

South Melbourne defy the odds, heartbreak for Bullants

Round 10 in Division 2 Men’s was one of the closest rounds of football we’ve seen yet, with four of the five matches decided by single figures, in what was a weekend of unexpected twists and turns.

South Melbourne Districts became the first team to defeat the table-toppers Brunswick in Division 2. The Swans defeated the men in purple by 5 points at Gillion Oval, ensuring nothing is impossible in this competition.

Brunswick’s Hayden Parker was lively from the get-go with each of the two first quarter goals for the hosts. Barely anything could split the two sides all day, with a game-high margin of just 10-points through three quarters. A late thirdterm goal from Swan Michael Carter gave the visitors that slender goal lead heading into the last.

It was in the final term, where the game was strung wide open. A couple of unanswered goals for the Bloods had the unbeaten Brunswick 19 points down through 10 minutes of the fourth quarter. But as all good sides do, they fought on with courage and persistence, drawing the margin back to a single kick at the 23-minute mark.

A chance went begging for Brunswick in the dying moments as they succumbed to their first loss of the year, 9.6 (60) to South Melbourne’s 9.11 (65). Parker was at his best once again and did everything he could, ending the day with 4 goals, but South Melbourne’s Leigh Sfetkidis kicked in 2 goals and got support from his teammates, which was enough on that day to end Brunswick’s run.

After the game, South Melbourne’s coach, Nick Abbott, said, “We’ve got a lot of respect for Brunswick and knew that although both teams were missing players, it was going to be a highly contested game.”

“It was a big step in the right direction for us, but it’s also a very even division this year, so we just need to keep winning.”

St Mary’s Salesian hosted MHSOB at Ferndale Park and fell just short by four points. In the first three quarters, MHSOB were clearly the better side over St Mary’s, but in the fourth quarter, the Saints responded started playing with real intent.

However, as the old saying goes ‘bad kicking is bad football’ and that was apparent in this contest with a combined 28 behinds and just seven goals. Either side could have comfortably claimed the four points, but given the game at hand, MHSOB proved stronger and tougher narrowly holding

onto to the 4.13 (37) to 3.15 (33) win. MHSOB’s Mathew Pereira kicked in 2 goals, whereas St Mary’s James Barrie also kicked 2 goals, but it was too late for the hosts.

St Mary’s coach Clay Tait expressed his frustration after the game and a common factor behind some poor form.

“We played well overall, but were wasteful with the ball, both in front of goal and entering our forward 50.”

“MHSOB defended well; however, we quickly turned the ball over and made poor decisions. Five goals and 33 behinds in two games don’t win you games of football.”

In another close encounter at Whitefriars College, the hosts Whitefriars defeated the Bulleen Templestowe by 4 points. The Bullants are currently in 9th place in the points table and are struggling to put together consecutive wins. This time, they came close to doing so, but ultimately to no avail.

In the first quarter, the Friars were extra clinical in front of goal, kicking 5.0 (30) whereas the Bullants despite more scoring shots trailed at quarter time by 7 points. The Friars blew out the contest, to a massive 33 points on the back of a five-goal to one heading into half time.

But Bulleen Templestowe’s defenders rallied together on the other side of the break. The Bullants didn’t let the Friars score a single goal, reducing the three-quarter time deficit to just 11-points. The Bullants continued their third term dominance in the last, kicking the first three unanswered goals to lead by 9 points heading into time on.

Whitefriars were on the back foot as the hosts nailed one at the 27-minute mark to bring the game to within a kick. Then in a miracle turn of events, the Friars put through another major with just about the last kick of the game to pinch the victory back from the Bullants.

Sam Kieseker of Whitefriars was the player of the game, booting in four crucial goals. Bulleen Templestowe’s Anthony N Lucisano was pretty close, booting three goals. The final score: Whitefriars 12.9 (81) defeated Bulleen Templestowe 11.11 (77)

Hawthorn and Aquinas were both hungry for their fourth wins, having faced a tough season so far. Played at Aquinas College, the game saw Hawthorn surge ahead to secure a commanding 17.12 (114) to 12.12 (84) victory.

Aquinas failed to start strong; hence, they couldn’t keep up with Hawthorn’s relentless pace and skill. The Hawks didn’t let the hosts come within striking distance on the scoreboard in all four quarters.

This win not only renews faith among Hawthorn’s fans, it also helps substantially, if they were to make a late charge to the finals, now just six points and percentage from the top four.

Hawks’ forward William Meehan charged his way up and kicked in 5 goals, and his teammate James Southby kicked 3 goals. Aquinas captain Michael Di Donato and his teammate, Harry Dwyer, combined for 6 goals in the defeat.

Hawthorn coach Mark Murray expressed his happiness with his team’s effort.

“I’m pleased with the team’s performance. Both teams were looking for a win. Players contributed well, but Justin Raiti was exceptional on the field” he said.

In a hard-fought clash at Bennettswood Reserve, Wattle Park and Elsternwick fought tooth and nail, but it was the Wickers who prevailed. It a strong start for the Animals, who slotted five majors to two in the opening quarter, holding a commanding 22-point lead at the first change. But as we’ve come to know from this Wickers side, never count them out. They turned the tide in the second, drawing the contest back to just seven points at the half time break.

The visiting Wickers kicked two quick goals to recapture the lead for the first time since early in the first term. Then Wattle Park kicked truly late in the quarter to take a handy nine-point lead turning for home.

In what proved to be a ‘scoring end’ of the ground now with Elsternwick, they pumped the scoreboard with the first four goals of the fourth quarter and claiming a 12.9 (81) to 10.13 (73) victory.

Elsternwick’s resilience and determination won them the game and showcased their potential as serious contenders. Once again, Elsternwick’s Spencer Hankin scored a hat trick of goals, and Baxter Newbegin scored three goals from Wattle Park.

The league is heading towards the eleventh round, as South Melbourne will face Elsternwick at the Lindsay Hasset Oval, which is said to be a game to watch out for. MHSOB will be hosting Aquinas at the Melbourne High School, and St Mary’s Salesian will be looking forward to making a comeback against the Whitefrairs. Brunswick will surely eye a big win against Wattle Park, and Hawthorn will look to maintain their winning streak against Bulleen Templestowe.

Oakleigh krush the competition, as a draw blows the top 4 wide open

Round 10 had it all, with a top order draw, a showdown between Old Trinity and Whitefriars, and a thrashing by Oakleigh at home. The draw leaves plenty of opportunity for a shake up in the top 4 as we head toward the pointy end of the season.

Mazenod and Old Camberwell/AJAX went head-tohead for the first time this season, in a highly anticipated clash that would see one side secure their first victory of the season to leap from the bottom rung of the ladder. The game was slow to get going on a frosty morning at Central Reserve, before Mazenod slotted their first goal in the second to take a lead.

Despite being fairly evenly matched teams, Mazenod was the better side on the day with 3 goals coming from three individual goal kickers (Luisa Giannetti, Natalia Prioriello, Tiani Wiropuspito) to run home victors, 27 to 3.

Ava Sandy, Hayley Mrocki, and Alannah Frampton were impressive for the visitors, whilst the momentum sat with Mazenod led by Zoe Spicer and Claudia Maguire.

Oakleigh have soared to another victory that sees them sit comfortably, one game clear in fourth. The Krushers executed a comprehensive 4-quarter smashing over Hawthorn with a final margin of 42 points.

Oakleigh were crafty with their ball use around the ground, with six players contributing a goal each to the final score. Meanwhile, Hawthorn struggled to get into the game and were held to just 2 behinds for the morning.

Emily Roos stood up for the Hawks, while Krushers’ skipper Ruby Ford was once again best afield for her side leading them home to their third win on the trot.

In what was arguably the most exciting match up of Round 10, equally placed Old Trinity and Whitefriars fought tooth and nail to secure a 4-point advantage in the middle order.

In a back-and-forth tussle, the Friars looked the stronger of the two sides early on, winning the opening half 15-3. Trinity imposed their way back into the contest by increasing their pressure around the ball and hitting the scoreboard to square things up at the third change.

Trinity booted the opening goal of the final term to take a six-point advantage, until Whitefriars came over the top, taking home the win 5.8 (38) to Old Trinity’s 5.4 (34).

Lara Young played her standout match for the season for Trinity, while Bree Whitehead impressed in just her third game for the season, while Hayley Notting kicked 2 for the Friars.

This clash was as exciting as they come with both sides well in contention to break into the top four with plenty of footy left to be played.

It was always going to be an uphill battle for Richmond Central taking down the ladder leaders in Glen Eira/Old McKinnon. To their credit the Snakes put up a good fight, utilising their home ground advantage and cohesion as a team to keep the top dogs to just 24 points for the match, whilst scoring a total of 14 themselves.

Glen Eira have proven themselves as the team to beat this season in Division 3 Women’s and have rarely put a footy wrong, with the likes of Madeline Box and Aleesha Whittle leading the charge yet again.

Richmond put in a valiant effort, even holding a lead at the main break. Although Glen Eira came over the top in the premiership quarter, a strong defensive effort kept them scoreless in the last quarter.

Rounding out the weekend, a top order clash between the Hampton Rovers and Power House delivered the first draw of the season at 22 apiece. In a low-scoring affair, that had swings of momentum for both sides, 36 players were left feeling mixed emotions at the final siren with neither a victory nor defeat to process.

Susan Miller

Power House had the upper hand early, booting the sole first quarter goal. It wasn’t until the premiership quarter when Hampton retaliated to take a 2-point advantage heading into the fourth. Both sides had their changes, with inaccuracy plaguing Power House late in the game, costing them 4 points, in exchange for 2.

Grace Read is no stranger to the best on list for Power House in another outstanding performance, while Bryanna Arnold had another strong day out for the Rovers.

Heading toward the business end of the competition, every win counts and every match up is an opportunity to secure a position to make a case come finals. Kicking off Round 11, Oakleigh will be looking to continue their winning ways as they travel to face Old Camberwell/AJAX who are yet to register a win this season.

Whitefriars host Richmond Central in what could be an exciting contest between two middle order sides, while Hawthorn come up against Old Trinity with both teams looking to get back on the winners list ahead of the Bye.

Mazenod are schooled to face the Hampton Rovers at home, while Glen Eira/Old McKinnon host Power House at Packer Park in what is set to be the match of the round between the top of the table giants.

Insurmountable Bulls prevail again, as Box Hill North secure first win

Can anyone beat North Brunswick ? In a top-ofthe-table clash for the ages, the Bulls have defeated Canterbury for the second time this season in another thriller. Previously beating the Cobras by seven points, North Brunswick remained confident to beat the in-form Canterbury, who had won their previous six games.

The Cobras initially had the momentum in the opening term, kicking the last three of the quarter to set up a ninepoint advantage at the first break. The Bulls’ never-say-die attitude rarely wavers however, and by halftime North Brunswick had regained the lead, albeit by just a singular point.

The Bulls’ defence was on full display in the second half, as they extended their lead to seven points at threequarter-time. Canterbury was held scoreless in the last quarter, as the Bulls pulled away to a 16-point victory.

Spencer Zahra, Adam Tsardakis and Jon Sharp were amongst North Brunswick’s best for Round 10, as they establish a two-game buffer for the minor premiership.

Joshua Ward, Lachy Shearer and Mitch Szabo were amongst Canterbury’s finest. The Cobras now drop to fourth following this loss, with the chance to rebound against La Trobe next week.

Despite a depleted outfit, St John’s have proven their premiership quality with a 109-point victory over Swinburne University. The Razorbacks fought hard in the contest for the first quarter, but the JOCs found their groove as the match progressed.

“Coming into the game we had a really long unavailability list and a few more late outs before the game. Our depth was challenged and the guys that came in really stood up,” St John’s coach Tim Edwards said.

“Our second half was one of the better for the year, our leaders stood up as we clicked into gear and started to play the brand of footy we have been looking for.”

St John’s’ key players unsurprisingly make up the majority of the JOCs best-on-ground, with Corey and Jarrod Ely, Callum Houghton and Timothy Werner earning votes.

Jed Toner and Sam Hodges were amongst Swinburne’s best, as Zachary Cooke managed to kick multiple goals in

a low-scoring performance. The Razorbacks head into the bye, now a game outside the top-five.

Power House dismantled La Trobe University in a crucial win for their final’s ambitions. La Trobe were held scoreless in the first quarter by a merciless Power House defence, which only conceded 28 points for the entire match.

Power House played a consistent game, scoring multiple goals in every quarter as they ticked over the triple-figure mark. The 81-point win holds their percentage in good stead, currently at 237.9%.

Archie Conboy and Jonty Randall were admirable for La Trobe in the midfield, as was James Toomey off half back.

Michael Timmons and Kieran Wotherspoon punted three majors each, as Joe Stefani and Luke Stubbs were deemed best on. Power House face Albert Park next week in an opportunity to win a third straight.

Richmond Central have swelled from an under-the-radar side to a force to be reckoned with, following its 215-point demolition of Eley Park.

A 17-goal first half destroyed the Sharks’ chances early, as the Snakes soared to a 101-point halftime lead. A further 18 goals in the second half extended the pain for the Sharks, as Richmond Central locked away a significant percentage-boosting win.

The Snakes forward line feasted, with Ben Dillon (7), Andrew Fraser (6), and Eric Nelson (5) combined for a whopping 18 goals. Richmond Central had 12 individual goal-scorers, highlighting the well-rounded team performance.

Eley Park’s skipper Andrew Yeo was amongst the Sharks best, joining Joel Kennedy, Sehath Alwis and first-year players Aaron Gove and Nicholas Nilsson. An evenly matched contest faces Eley Park in Round 11, taking on Box Hill North at home.

After eight gruelling defeats and dealing with a mammoth injury list, Box Hill North have recorded their first win of the season against Chadstone.

The game was tightly contested throughout the first quarter, with the Demons holding a slight five-point

advantage. A five-goal to two second quarter provided Box Hill North a solid lead, ultimately being the difference-maker by the final siren. A determined Synners side matched the Demons in the second half, however it was too little too late, suffering a defeat of 23 points.

“With up to 12 of our senior list unavailable for the first nine rounds, we set ourselves for Round 10 where we had some good senior players returning,” Box Hill North coach Jeff D’Amato said on the injury list.

“We got off to a great start with our midfield getting on top and had some great connection with the forwards in the second [quarter], where we really went back to some connection we had in 2023,” D’Amato said. “Although the margin looked slim in the end, we feel we can build off this win and get some momentum.”

An impressive five-goal outing from Jonathan Tommasoni was key for the Demons, as Braiden Leong and Hristos Millaras were Chadstone’s best.

As the top-five pull away from the competition, Division 3’s Round 11 will be crucial for the bottom six clubs to chase the pack.

La Trobe host Canterbury and Albert Park play Power House, in two matches that require shock upsets to keep the Trobers and Falcons’ seasons alive.

St John’s host Richmond Central in a huge top-five clash. The Snake’s form has been formidable lately, however they are yet to beat a current top-five team.

Eley Park host Box Hill North in a Box Hill crosstown clash, as Chadstone aim to challenge North Brunswick. Swinburne University have the bye.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

De La Salle jubilation, Old Scotch dominant

It was a weekend of upsets and big victories in the Holmesglen Under 19’s competition.

Opening the Saturday schedule was the feel-good story of the round, De La Salle trumping Beaumaris, gaining their first win of the season.

Shooting out to an early lead, the De La boys endured a late comeback from the sharks, to run away as resounding 15-point victors. De La Salle’s victory had been weeks in the making, the side putting together an impressive month of form.

It was James Harper, Josh Cumberlidge and Joshua Stewart who led the charge, stunning their opponents from the opening bounce.

Carlos Reynolds, Angus Bowd, Ted Clayton toiled hard for the opposition, yet to no avail.

Winning away from home will instil good confidence in De La Salle ahead of their match up against seventh-placed Caulfield Grammarians next round.

Over at Glen Huntly Park, the University Blues thumped Caulfield Grammarians in a one-sided affair that will be a day to forget for the Fields.

Opening the contest with a scintillating nine goal term, the Blues had the match all but won early on.

Although Caulfield won the second quarter 4 goals to 3, Uni Blues got the game back on their terms in the third to rampage to a 73-point advantage at the last change.

Oliver Sleiman and Luca Di Lallo dazzled forward of the ball, whilst George McCulloch, William Furphy and Max Duffell dominated the contest.

Concluding the game as 98-point winners, the Uni Blues are proving to be the in-form team in the competition.

Old Scotch ran away as 60-point victors in a stunning display against a feeble Old Xaverians outfit.

Rearing out to a 50-point lead entering the main break, Old Scotch were never going to lose.

Lachie Harker was the story of the day, being named best afield. Elliot Power was relentless, whilst Alec Sellers, Jake Phillips, Zachary Phillips and Finn Nankervis powered their team to a victory.

This win keeps Scotch comfortably in second with a healthy percentage as a buffer.

Over at TH King oval, Old Brighton flexed their muscle to outlast St Kevin’s. Cooper Dowe was the story of the day, named best afield, proving his skill throughout the majority of the contest.

Sam Litis, Oliver Goodger and Miller Chilcott were also impressive on the day.

Although they currently sit in sixth, SKOB are not out of contention with plenty of footy yet to be played.

As Round 11 concludes, The boys from Old Brighton remain atop the ladder standings, two games clear. Behind them, Old Scotch in second position.

Uni Blues, Old Xavier and St Bedes/Mentone remain in a deadlock on 28 points apiece, equal in third position.

As the season progresses, there is no doubt that the cream of the competition will rise. Until then, we are left to ponder who exactly remains as premiership contenders, and who does not.

Looking ahead to Round 12, Williamstown CYMS host Old Xaverians at Fearon Reserve, while Beaumaris travel to face Old Scotch.

Over at Waverley Oval, De La Salle will come up against Caulfield Grammarians and the University Blues clash with ladder leaders, Old Brighton.

Round out the weekend, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will host St Kevin’s in what could be a good contest as the two sides battle it out for ladder standings.

Hayley Mrocki (AJAX)

Congratulations to Hayley Mrocki on playing 100 games!! Hayley becomes the third ‘Jackette’ to reach the 100-game milestone at AJAX, after playing with the club for 8 years. She has been in and around the club for a long time, having played for the past 8 years. It is a family affair at AJAX with Hayley’s sister and cousin also playing for the club. Hayley plays in the backline and has become a leader for the young Jackettes coming through. She is the Vice Captain and this week when she runs out for her 100 th game will captain the side. Congrats Hayley on this incredible achievement! Go Jackas!

Teresa D’Angelo (La Trobe University)

100

Congratulations to La Trobe’s Teresa D’Angelo on reaching 100 games – Swifty joined the Trobers in 2015 playing all but a couple of games in the Senior Women’s team. Swifty started as a wily forward and transitioned into the midfield to become a dominant threat. She has been ever reliable, plays with passion and we are proud to have her as our skipper. Off field Swifty has been La Trobe’s secretary for a record 6 seasons with her favourite mantra being, “Just get it done!” Well done Swifty on joining a select group of 74 Trobers who have played 100 games in the red & black!

Jarrod Ely (St John’s OC)

100

Congratulations to Jarrod Ely on his 100th game. One of the best clubman anyone could ask for, doesn’t miss training sessions or functions and a well-loved guy at the club. Jarrod has developed his game over the years into one of the most courageous players going around. His craft as a backman has come along way, rarely gets beaten one on one and plays on a range of different size forwards. One of the first picked every week in the seniors he has a lot of football in front of him and is determined to get better every game. Never satisfied with how his game is there is always something he wants to work on and get better at. Looking forward to the next 100 with the JOCS.

Michael (Mal) Mitris (Old Ivanhoe)

200

Michael (Mal) Mitris plays his 200th game this weekend! Mal is a stalwart of Old Ivanhoe Football Club with accolades aplenty. He was captain for 8 years, from 2015 to 2022 and a three-time Premiership player (2010, 2013, and 2023), winning the Old Ivanhoe B&F twice. Mal has kicked 125 goals in his career, but more notably was selected in the Rep side in 2015. Admired and respected by all at the club, Mal was awarded Old Ivanhoe Life Membership in 2022. Congratulations Mal on reaching this incredible milestone!

Dom O’Keefe (Caulfield Grammarians)

200

This Saturday 29th June at Glenhuntly, key defender Dom O’Keefe will become the 30th player to play 200 games for the Caulfield Grammarians Football Club. Starting in our Under 19’s in 2007 Dom would have reached this milestone earlier were it not for COVID, some terribly unfortunate injuries and a short modelling career in Europe. However, he has stuck with our club through some challenging recent seasons and is a wonderful role model for our young squad. An athletic defender in our senior side for the best part of a decade, he has always performed well in big games and was a member of our 2017 Reserves Premiership side. Many of his games were played alongside his younger brother Louis and his father Mike was also a long-time sponsor and supporter of Grammarians. Everyone in the Caulfield Grammarians community, especially his beautiful wife Jesse and daughter Ruby, are looking forward to celebrating Dom’s achievement and his attainment of life membership of our great club.
