SEASON 2022 - July 2

EDITORIAL Jason Reddick CEO

While William Buck Premier and Premier B Men’s have the bye this weekend, there are some cracking match-ups across the rest of the competition this weekend. Division 1 Men’s will see the powerful PEGS team (2nd) host the Glen Eira Gryphons (3rd). Whilst in Division 2 Men’s, Brunswick (3rd) will battle the West Brunswick Magpies (2nd) for neighbourhood bragging rights. The last time these two teams met, Brunswick prevailed with a kick after the siren!

One of the great pleasures of my role is to attend the VAFA Club match day events, learn about Clubs’ rich history, and witness first-hand the wonderful work done by the many people off the field that are so essential to both the success and community impact of our Clubs. It is particularly enjoyable getting to know more about the Divisional Clubs that I had not previously encountered in my time involved at Club land. Last week I attended the Elsternwick Amateur FC President’s Function preceding their Division 3 Men’s clash with Canterbury FC (won by the Cobras). The Past Players Day had a terrific turnout, as recognition was paid to Club Legend Gary Rosewarne who tragically passed away in July 2021. Established in 1906, Elsternwick is the longest standing district member club of the VAFA, and with the inclusive approach of their President Jarrad Nas, the Club is progressing strongly.

On the Women’s front, the AFLW Draft took place during the week, with Charlotte Taylor (Marcellin FC) and Lily Goss (formerly of Old Scotch) both earning selection on AFLW lists.

It is particularly enjoyable getting to get to know more about the Divisional Clubs

They follow in the footsteps of a number of VAFA women drafted into the AFLW in recent years: Mimi Hill from Old Scotch to Carlton; Ellie Gavalas from Marcellin to North Melbourne; and Imogen Barnett from Old Trinity to Collingwood.

Whilst focusing on our Women, a new initiative that we are now producing is the VAFA Women›s Podcast - “Inside the Boundary” with Lucy Watkin (Melbourne Uni Women’s) and Eliza Wright (Fitzroy FC). This podcast showcases the Women›s competition and provides a platform to discuss all things VAFA Women›s (episodes are released every Thursday). I encourage all those players and supporters of our Women’s competition to listen in.

This week I head to another Division 3 game where Hawthorn Amateur FC will host Westbourne Grammarians, a game that will be live streamed on the VAFA Website for those who can’t get there. A relatively young Club (established in 1995) it holds the honour of producing the first ever VAFA Women’s Premiership team when it took out the inaugural title in 2017. A strong advocate for mental health, the Club has set up the Wings Mental Health Fund and have secured 2016 Western Bulldogs Premiership hero Tom Boyd to speak at the pre-game event.

In the meantime… Enjoy your footy!

The Lions are roaring as SKOB pass the school test in flying colours Our top flight teams left nothing to chance over the weekend knowing full-well they won’t be seen again for 21 days.

The game became a grind from quarter time onwards and Xav’s worked their way back into the contest on the scoreboard, Marcus Stavrou led from the front getting his hands on the ball at all costs, kicking two goals. Cam Hodges was doing the same the other way for St Kevins.

Collegians are riding a roller coaster in 2022 with big ups, big downs and everything in between. St Kevin’s reign supreme at the College, Old Melburnians ended the dominance Old Scotch has at their own school. Despite losing to Uni Blues it was a much improved performance from the bottom of the table St Bernard’s as Caulfield triumphed over Old Trinity.

Michael Pisker was the brick wall in defence, it took until the final quarter for Xavier Richards to come into the contest as Xaverians pressed hard. Inaccuracy in the last quarter (3.7 to 1.0) cost the Xaverians from being even closer on the scoreboard.

Out bayside, every selection went the way of Old Brighton in the build up. 40 seconds into the game you’d have been forgiven for thinking it would be a walk in the park for the Tonners. Doyle, to Kennedy, to Hill, to goal. From there though, it was all Collegians as the purple army went to work keeping the home side to just three goals to three quarter time, kicking 11 themselves and having an unassailable 44 point lead.

St Kevin’s two losses this season have been by 9 points and 3 points, both away from home. They’re proving to be an anywhere, anytime team. Just the way Plugger Lynch likes it. University Blues is outside the top four, equal with Old Xaverians but an inferior percentage. At half-time on Saturday there may have been some questions around whether they’d be up for the fight against St Bernard’s.

Since being embarrassed under the Friday night lights against Old Melburnians, Collegians have now won three in a row by 29, 39 and 28 points. Jared Rivers has been afforded the luxury of having a fit group of players and handy selections to pick from. They’re well and truly out of any relegation discussions for 2022, instead of asking how they will stay up, they’re asking about how we can get to fourth on the table.

Held to three goals, trailing by 26 points and staring down the barrel of a third straight loss. Some words of inspiration from Guy Martyn and the Blues flipped the script in the second half kicking seven goals to two running out 20 point winners. Sam Grimley, again the focal point up forward with another five goals to his name. He won’t be beaten on the sharpshooters table from here with 41 in total. Paddy Kerr (26) and Tom Baker (26) the next best.

Old Brighton put in their lowest performance of the year from a scoreboard perspective. Inaccuracy in front of goal, the inability to make Collegians pay when momentum was on their side. It’s starting to become a trend for the Tonners, despite winning games, four of their last five they’ve kicked more behinds than points and with the competition so even, they’ll want to take every chance they get in front of the sticks.

The Snowdogs put together their best first half of the season, Darren Colaco kicked three for the home side. It fell away in the third term as Blues gained the ascendancy and didn’t look back from there. Old Melburnians are 2% behind Old Brighton who’ve retained second spot on the ladder despite the loss to Collegians. OM’s were in the tightest contest of the round to three quarter time with the game taking a similar to trend to the earlier encounter against Old Scotch at Elsternwick Park in Round 7.

In the RSN Carnival Match of the Day, St Kevin’s took every chance afforded to them in an opening quarter blitz against Old Xaverians that sealed the deal on the game. Seven goals to one set up a 38 point buffer at the opening change with Paddy Kerr looking ominous. While SKOB had the aid of the breeze, the ball movement was slick, the pressure around the contest had the red and black mafia second guessing themselves and hurt on turnover. ROUND 11 RESULTS

2022 WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S Caulfield Grammarians 2.0 8.2 11.5 17.10 (112) Old Trinity 2.5 4.5 6.8 6.8 (44) GOALS: Caulfield Grammarians: J. Ellwood 3, N. Baltas 3, I. Morrisby 3, K. Trailing by 2-points at three quarter time, the Navy Blue stormed home with six final quarter goals to win by 25 points and respond after last week’s loss to St Kevins. Tom Baker (6) was the shining light in the forward line and has been a terrific recruit for Paul Satterley’s forward line. Working in tandem with Jackson Paine, Justin De Steiger and when he’s available (like yesterday) Sam Dunell. Old Scotch can take a lot away from this season when it’s all over, they’ve been in every contest this year. Another 9 individual goal kickers as part of the loss. They’re on the next rung of teams outside the top 4 with Collegians and if the progress continues on this trend, it won’t be long before they’re taking the next step. It may have felt wobbly at quarter time for Caulfield at Glen Huntly Oval as Old Trinity took the opening term honours without fully capitalising. The Fields turned it around in the second term with six goals of their own. Before running away from the T’s in the second half. Jack Ellwood, Isaac Morrisby, Nick Baltas and Keegan Stewart all kicked three majors each. Three out of the last four matches the Fields have had over 25 scoring shots at goal. Maybe the formula for Punchy Williams is to wind back the clock to the great era of Malcolm Blight, leave the defence to the others and focus on kicking a higher score than the opposition. They’re showing the capabilities of kicking big scores. In a game that had little to cheer about for the T’s, Myles Scott has been a shining light for the T’s in the last fortnight. The best Jamie Cassidy-McNamara can do is chalk it up as another learning experience for him and his developing group. Last week, they couldn’t miss in front of the goal. When they had the momentum against the Fields, they were unable to take a firm grasp of it. There are 7-games remaining in the home and away season. A fortnight to get the aches, pains, niggles and travel out of the way. Some clubs will be thankful for the bye, others will wish this time away as quickly as possible. For me, July 16 can’t come quick enough. See you in Round 12!

If it Bleeds, We can kill it; Old Haileybury defeat Uni Blacks leaving the top spot up for grabs Let the jostling for spots begin with some important wins this week allowing teams to climb the ladder. Fitzroy overpowered Williamstown as did AJAX in their game against Old Carey. Beaumaris showed their strength against De La Salle and in an upset victory, Old Haileybury defeat the powerhouse that is the Uni Blacks.

Inaccuracy in front of the posts proved costly for De La as they entered the final term with 5 goals 9 to Beauy’s 7 goals 3. The experience and leadership of Matthew Petering coupled with the determination from Jake Nardino and his 2 notable goals highlighted Beaumaris’ ability to wrestle the game in their favour.

Down at Fearon reserve, Fitzroy defeated Williamstown by 25 points. Williamstown came out of the blocks early, nabbing themselves a 4-point lead. Fitzroy were quick to respond with forwards Jules Turner and Ted Clayton firing on all cylinders. Jack McKay put in a stellar performance in the ruck, working hard all day for his teammates. As CY trailed by 16 points at 3-quarter time, Jai Haines and Thomas Johnstone continued their second and third efforts around the ground, determined to claw back the win.

In the end, Beaumaris proved that they are a force to be reckoned with, overcoming De La by 16-points. De La showed significant improvement since the last time these two met, minimising the previous 52-point margin by a mile. With Round 12 on the horizon, can De La bring this heat against the Tigers? Or will SBMT come out wellrested and hungry to settle the scores? With both teams sitting on 12 points, there is no doubt this game will be a close one. Beaumaris will take some key learnings from this game and need to hit the ground running if they are any chance to climb to the top spot and defeat the Uni Blacks.

Ned Sayers was also among the best for Williamstown securing himself a goal as was Harrison Miller in his senior debut. In the end, crucial momentum off the half-back line from Jock Green proved too powerful as Fitzroy ran away with the victory. Fitzroy currently sit 5th on the table trailing behind AJAX by 4 points. It’s safe to say their round 12 battle against the Jackers at Brunswick Street Oval will be a pivotal one. On the other side of the coin, 8th play 9th in Round 12 as CY look to grab their third victory for the season against Old Carey.

Old Carey couldn’t keep their streak alive in Round 11 as AJAX defeat the Panthers by 39 points. The Jackers excellence was on show this week with Ben Krongold setting the tone in the middle allowing Toby Sheezel to play his role in front of goal. Adam and Brad Caplan fought hard around the ground emphasising the skill and drive from this side. Old Carey definitely didn’t go down without a fight, clawing back a few points in the 3 rd quarter with a 23-point margin as they entered the final term.

Waverley Oval set the stage for a nail-biting match against De La Salle and Beaumaris. De La were off to a flying start, taking advantage of the dosing Sharks to generate a 16-point lead in the opening term. Sam and Jack Williams turned The Dairy Bell into The French Open with their exceptional ball use through the centre meanwhile Sean Fisher’s resourcefulness up forward kept The Sharks guessing. A close second quarter saw Beaumaris lift as The Sharks entered the halftime break in front by 1 point.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Mitchell Wooffindin’s vital goals alongside Jonathan Marsh’s run and carry through the midfield made The Jackers work for the 4-points. Winning 3 of their last 5 games, AJAX are definitely finals contenders with an all-important match against the Roy’s determining their spot. After the break, Old Carey return home to face Williamstown.

Given a close scoreline in Round One, another win for the Panthers is certainly up for grabs in Round 12. The tables were turned this week, with Old Haileybury giving the Uni Blacks a taste of their own medicine at Melbourne University Oval. The Bloods started this game on the front foot booting 2 goals 3 to Uni Blacks 1 goal 2. From there, despite determination from Charlie Francis through the middle alongside Louis Vescio’s forward line pressure, Uni Blacks were unable to execute their usual performance. Star recruit Jack Lonie stepped up to the plate providing incredible service to forwards Durras Seccull and Noah Gawn kicking 2 and 3 each. The Bloods continued to show confidence and accuracy through key players Lachlan Treverton and Kye Turner resulting in a final 46-point margin. Old Haileybury have shown glimpses of greatness the past few games and with 4 quarters of controlled footy from all lines this week, it is apparent their hard work on the track is paying off.

Six teams chase two finals spots as the Premier C ladder tightens High scores, close contests, upsets; no matter what your poison, there was something for you in round eleven. Here’s what took place…

Old Ivanhoe were similarly solid in the final quarter, but with seconds left Kai Colella converted what proved to be the winning goal after a big contested mark, keeping the Vultures squarely in the finals hunt. Three players kicked two goals each for Parkdale, for whom Jarrod Peake was tireless in the ruck. Darcy Teele kicked four goals for Old Ivanhoe, and Michael Mitris was excellent for them.

When you talk about weird games of football, this is one that falls under this heading. Mazenod had the benefit of a significant wind advantage in the opening quarter, and a return of 2.5 at quarter time was probably considerably less than they were looking for. It is in the second term that Mazenod set up their victory.

UHS-VU have started the last couple of games well. Here they kicked two of the first three goals, but Monash ended the first quarter well on top. They kept the Uni in the game, however, by frittering away opportunities, kicking 2.10 to 2.1 in the first term.

An early Ormond goal was the extent of what they were able to achieve, kicking towards the scoring end, while Mazenod slammed on four of their own to go into the sheds 35 points to the good. Four more goals in the third quarter to a solitary point, plus the first major of the last quarter, led to a scoreline of 80-11 in Mazenod’s favour. However, suddenly in the second half of the last term Ormond came to life, kicking six goals straight without reply to add respectability to the final score.

That was as close as UHS-VU got, as this was the type of match that title-chasing Monash were determined not to drop. Five goals to two followed in the second quarter, then seven goals to one in the third as the Monash forwards began to find their radar. A 65-point threequarter time margin meant that the game was done as a contest, and the Blues were able to coast to a 74-point margin at the finish.

Shaun Lovell kicked five goals and Brad Kovac two for the winners, for whom Tom McKenna was their best. Joe Nowell with three goals and Zach Benson with two led Ormond’s scoring chart, with Dae Szydlik strong on the day. Whether Mazenod opted for self-preservation late, or even whether Ormond could have won with an extra 15 minutes of football, no-one will ever know, but it certainly made for good conversation around the tables in the club rooms.

Nick Darling kicked five goals and Alex Bennett four for Monash, for whom MacGregor Cameron was excellent. James McGee kicked three goals for UHS-VU, with Fraser Allan and Ben Dimattina their best. Old Mentonians kicked the first goal against Hampton Rovers, but that only served to poke the angry bear as Hampton kicked the next six to take complete control of this match. The one-way traffic continued in the second quarter as the Rovers, resurgent after a couple of mid-season defeats, returned well and truly to their free-flowing best.

Old Ivanhoe came flying out of the gates at Chelsworth Park, kicking the first four goals of the match before Parkdale were able to get any sort of foothold. That showed the strength of the breeze as whilst two goals per quarter were kicked into it, goals were kicked more freely at the other end of the park.

A 53-point half-time lead always looked too much for the Panthers to cope with, but they showed plenty of spirit in taking an equal share of the six goals kicked in the third term. Sadly for them though, Hampton were intent on building momentum for the following week and finished with eight last quarter goals to run out victors by 83 points.

Old Ivanhoe took that four goal lead into the first break, but this was all-but equalised by half time by the plucky Vultures. It is in the third term that the Vultures started to take control, keeping Old Ivanhoe to two goals whilst kicking the last two goals of the quarter to give them momentum plus only a two point deficit at the last break.

Jacob Gray, Max Coughlin and Dylan Melnjak kicked four each for Hampton with Ryan Leslie excellent, while Tom Morecroft and Lawson Daniels kicked two each for Old Mentonians with Tom McCarthy their best. Marcellin will feel that they still have a chance of playing finals, and that they don’t have to fix too much to go on a winning run. If that run is to roll on then this second win in a row will help it gather speed. They were never troubled after going to quarter-time four goals to the good, and five further goals to two established a 48-point break at the half. Preston Bullants had their best period of the match just after half time, kicking five of the first seven goals of the second half, but that was the end of the show as far as their scoring went. Marcellin went on a rampage in the final term, kicking the only six goals as Preston stopped to a walk, handing Marcellin a resounding 77-point win. The full-forwards had good days with Lachlan Rush kicking seven for Marcellin and Matthew Perazzola six for Preston. Marcellin’s Jeremiah Antypas and Matt Capetola, and Preston’s Ethan Lowe and Mark Chamberlain were excellent on the day. Old Geelong bye

Under 19 Festival To Remember In celebration and recognition of the VAFA Holmesglen Under 19 program. The Footy Festival returned for the second year after the success of its debut in 2021. This year, Under 19 Division 1 Men’s took centre stagee al at Elsternwick Park and on Holmes/Todd Oval on Sunday. Matt Collister, VAFA Football Operations Manager told VAFA Media after the event on Sunday evening “Whilst we were not blessedd with the beautiful weather like in 2021, this year’s second edition of the VAFA Holmesglen Under 19 Men’s Division 1 Footy Festival was equally successful.” “All Under 19 Men’s players across the eight teams involved were treated to a full set of umpires, a live stream broadcast and an opportunity to check out how all their opponents are shaping up for the second half of the season.” “Club volunteers and supporters were even commenting about how enjoyable it was to cross paths with supporters and old friends from other clubs too, so the enjoyment was experienced on both sides of the fence” said Collister. In the four games, Hampton Rovers defeated Old Haileybury 86-45, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers defeated Old Trinity 114-8, Mazenod defeated Old Xaverians 94-47, and Beaumaris defeated Uni Blacks 117-34.

Masters Festival this Sunday While the cold of winter sets in across Melbourne, the VAFA’s Footy Festivals are continuing to be on show and fire you up and keep you warm. After the success of the Holmesglen Under 19 Division 1 Men’s competition at Elsternwick Park, this weekend the VAFA is showcasing its freshest men’s section as part of its ever growing competition. The Mecwacare Masters Footy Festival will take to Elsternwick Park this Sunday, July 3. Proving that age is merely a number and a terrific opportunity to showcase Masters Football in a standalone time slot. The focus of the Masters format is to provide an alternative to traditional football competitions, with the VAFA offering the opportunity to play to an over 35 age group. VAFA Club Development Manager, Sean Walker has been instrumental in initiating the Masters Competition and driving the concept behind the Footy Festival on Sunday “In this, the first year of a VAFA Masters competition it has been great to see the format be embraced by the 4 clubs and 5 teams involved.” he told VAFA Media. “The Masters competition is flexible in nature with teams playing every second week with the ability to fixture Friday games, Sunday games or Saturday games. The Masters competition is a great way for clubs to continue to engage players within the football club who can’t commit to football every weekend.” On Sunday, games will be played back to back on Elsternwick Park’s main oval. The action kicks off at 12.30pm with Oakleigh playing host to De La Salle, before St Kevin’s face Marcellin Bald Eagles (Blue) at 2.30pm. For those who can’t make it to VAFA HQ to see the action unfold, you can tune in through the VAFA Website & VAFA Facebook Page as My Sport Live is there to provide live-streaming coverage of both games. Complete with VAFA great Simon Petch behind the microphones along with Josh Heriot and Ethan Mills.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Clare Konstanty (Glen Eira) The VAFA congratulates Clare Konstanty on being nominated the Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star this week. Lara produced a best on ground performance, along with a goal in Glen Eira’s 64-point win over La Trobe last weekend. What the club said: Clare joined Glen Eira Women’s Football Club in 2021 from her junior club St Paul’s. She is a consistent regular at all trainings and strives to develop herself as a player. Clare brings enthusiasm and passion to our team. Her form this season has shown improvement across all games and she is an important member of our team. One of Clare’s valuable assets is her running speed up forward and down the wings when she plays, which provides plenty of highlights. Clare’s team first approach means she is willing to play in any position that she is asked too. Clare is a pleasure to coach. All of us at the Glen Eira Football Club are super proud of Clare and her VAFA Rising Star nomination. We look forward to her continuing her wonderful football career at the Gryphs for many years to come.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee Blair Healy (Old Paradians) The VAFA congratulates Blair Healy from Old Paradians who has been nominated as the Round 11 Rising Star after his 2-goal performance in their 6-point win over Brunswick on the weekend. What the club said: At age 19, Blair has a lot of potential with future growth still to come. The youngest of three brothers currently playing for the OPs, the Healy name has a long history with the Club. He played his first game in the Seniors as a 17 year old, and has never looked out of place at the level since. On the field he currently plays a high half forward role and pinch hits in the ruck here and there. He is very athletic, jumps well and backs himself in to win the ball in his area, especially in the air, where he often puts himself in contention for mark of the year. An added bonus to his game is his ability and pace at ground level, which for a young man standing at 6’3 is a real asset. Blair certainly has the potential to go to higher levels of football and as a club we are here to develop his game and overall fitness so this can hopefully happen moving forward. One of several talented players in our forward half he has played consistently this year after a late start, and will be challenged to go to new levels with his football, and is a key player in hopefully leading us towards a finals berth. Big scores and big wins in Round 11 Now, if we are going to talk about demolition and steam rolling teams, then we have to talk about the game that produced the highest score of the year in the matchup between PEGS and St Marys Salesian. PEGS are the best team in the comp on their day and this was the definition of it being your big day, piling on 31.23 against the bottom of the ladder St Marys Salesian, with a notable 8 different multiple goal scorers. This was always going to be a large deficit, but I did not expect PEGS to eclipse the 200 point margin. This was an impressive display of why they are the in-form team of the competition, and they certainly wasted no time in flexing their muscles and showing that.

Round 11 action saw some of the biggest scores in Division 1 Men’s, and with a few players missing heading into the season of European holidays and prime time for the flu, things are only going to get more interesting over the next few weeks. Let’s kick things off with Old Peninsula taking on the inform Kew outfit, a matchup that was rather one sided throughout the afternoon. The men from Kew got away to a flying start, taking advantage of the inaccuracy from the Peninsula boys with 6 minors to open the first quarter. From there, it went into cruise control from this high-powered forward line as Kew began to kick away with ease and run out eventual 31 point winners, with Cooper Lord on debut kicking 3 big ones to steer his side home and continue their momentum for a first place finish in the division.

The matchup between Old Camberwell and Prahran Assumption had huge ramifications for the race into the top 4, with one side really putting themselves back into the conversation of a chance to appear in the finals at year’s end. It certainly was not the start to the year Camberwell would have wanted, but they are the team that just won’t go away, making a push here against a side who sits just one spot above on the ladder in 5th. The game was never really in the balance with Old Camberwell, and in particular Sam Murphy digging deep to will the team over the line by 29 points to keep themselves in the conversation of the finals push.

Moving on to the next match up and let me tell you, this was an absolute thumping from Therry Penola, chalking up their biggest win and biggest score of the year against Whitefriars. This team is such an interesting one because their potential, as we can see here, is sky high - and they put it all on display on Saturday afternoon, booting 21 majors for the afternoon, steam rolling Whitefriars by 86 points, with 6 big ones from Kane O’Halloran - putting to bed any hope or glimmer of ambition for Whitefriars to maybe make a push to contend for the final spot in this top 4 outfit.

ROUND 11 RESULTS

2022 DIVISION 1 MEN’S Glen Eira 2.3 6.8 8.11 14.11 (95) Oakleigh AFC 1.5 2.7 4.10 4.12 (36) GOALS: Glen Eira: A. Erwin-Ross 3, C. Drenth 3, J. Waras Carstensen 3, N. Pruscino 2, W. Green 1, W. The final game of the round was another mid-table matchup between Oakleigh and Glen Eira. Oakleigh currently sits fourth on the table, and with their big forward Aaron Cloke kicking bag after bag, I tipped that this outfit would run away victors at days end, however I was proven wrong! Glen Eira came out of the blocks slowly, but with 5+ goals in the second and fourth terms, they were able to control the game with ease and run out 59-point victors over a top 4 side, which again has major repercussions for these teams trying to vie for that fourth and final spot at years end.

AFL and VAFA, the Magpies are flying While this column has made no attempt to hide away from the fact that the Magpie on the Ivanhoe AFC jumper is flourishing in season 2022. The Magpies that swoop around West Brunswick have gathered a full head of steam and have positioned themselves beautifully with one game to go before the bye.

The Paradians are flying. After kicking just 1.9 in Round 5 against West Brunswick and sitting 2-3 on the ladder, they (along with Ivanhoe AFC) have been the form side of Division 2. Winning their last 6 matches and now sitting inside the top 4. It is a drastically different team that is running out now after a slow start to the season. Against Brunswick on the weekend, their half-time lead of 25 points was whittled down to scores being level at the final change before winning the last quarter and the game by six points in a thriller.

As an unashamed Collingwood fan, it is some sort of a dream to see the AFL Magpies winning their last five matches. Ivanhoe AFC sit outright on top by two games, with the West Brunswick Magpies winning their last 4-matches after the heartbreak of an after-the-siren loss. After a shaky start to the year, they’ve bounced back and on Saturday were able to keep Aquinas at bay from the first bounce. An inaccurate first quarter mattered little as the margin grew at every change to come away winners by 47 points.

Earlier this season the Wickers gave them a footballing lesson, and they’ve proved that they’re fast learners turning the tables on them this time around. After starting the season in a blaze of glory, Brunswick have now dropped two games in a row, both against sides in the top 4. The next challenge is the second placed West Brunswick. The team they overcame after the bell 4 weeks ago.

Joel Beer (3) along with Ben Hutchins (3) were the targets in the forward line, as David Ferrier was able to do as he pleased in a best on ground performance. After a solid start to the season, Aquinas have now gone L W L W L since Round 7, according to the trend, they’re in for a win this week. The assignment however, is the ladder leaders Ivanhoe AFC. But, if there’s a side that can rally for a big game. It’s Aquinas.

It was something out of the Melbourne Demons playbook from Manningham Cobras during the third term against Bulleen Templestowe. Trailing by 13 points at half-time, the Cobras blasted home 8 goals in the third quarter to take the lead and hold on to win for the second time this season, by 15 points.

The Hoers didn’t have it all their own way against MHSOB, the final margin of 30 points certainly wasn’t reflective of the game. Leading by just 1-point at the final change and the Unicorns sitting at 7.12.54, they could’ve put the game beyond doubt had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal.

7-individual goal kickers from the 12 kicked by the Cobras will go a long way to pleasing the coaching staff. The clubs first win since Round 3 and cuts a run of 6-straight losses. The Ants, started the first month of the season at 2-1 have found the going tougher since, with a 1-7 wins and losses scoreline.

Billy Drake (7) stepped up for the top side as they stormed home with six final quarter goals in a best on ground display. Ashan Wijayakumara (3) was back hitting the scoreboard for MHSOB, unfortunately though it wasn’t enough as the Unicorns fell outside the top 4.

This coming weekend, in the battle of the bottom four, Manningham have the chance to get out of the bottom two should they beat Yarra Old Grammarians. Bulleen Templestowe will be making the trek to Ross Gregory Oval to face Power House.

The opportunity to get back into the 4 relies heavily on this weekend, facing Old Parade at home, a team that caused them problems earlier this year. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

In their most emphatic performance of the season, Yarra Old Grammarians shut the door on Power House by half-time with 14 goals to two. The scoreboard was much more even in the second half, but the damage had already been done, and the papers had already been stamped. Liam Marshall (5) has now kicked 20 goals for the season, while Michael Scott (5) has moved himself up to 22. From his 8 games, having missed three, he may still be the front-runner for the clubs best and fairest if the count was stopped now. It was the toughest of tough lead-in’s for the men from Ross Gregory Oval. A COVID-19 outbreak impacted much of the playing group, causing significant team changes, coaching changes, team officials and staff. So much so the club was forced to forfeit its reserves side and use the remaining fit players from the 2’s as top up players for the senior team. One shining light all year has been the form of Ben Circosta who again stood up, named their best and kicked two majors. Next weekend marks the end of the second third of the Division 2 season. It may shape how the ladder looks come the end of the season. Either way, the 8 sides chasing black and white stripes are going to have to do a lot right, to knock both sets of Magpies off their perch.

Attention, we have a logjam in lane four Eyes might have been firmly on what could be argued as the round of the season in the AFL, but Division 3 Men’s VAFA footy continues to heat up. Four wins separate the top three from the rest of the competition, while percentage is all that stands between fourth and seventh, meaning that for many teams, finals are still on the horizon, even if for some they’re more of a mirage.

The Westbourne Grammarians have suffered another large loss at Westbourne Grammar, with a slow-starting South Melbourne Districts getting the win by 144 points. The Warriors were close early and only down by an assailable 22 points at the first break, before the Bloods put their foot down to kick six goals in the second term and all but seal the deal. After the main break, the away side put their foot down, kicking 16.3 for the last half, while the home side will rue missed goal opportunities. South Melbourne Districts had seven multiple-goalscorers, with Oliver Dufficy (6), Leigh Sfetkidis (4), Samuel McGinn (4), Jamie Brooker (3), Matthew Morrison (3), Michael Dufficy (2), and Ryan McKenzie (2) all scoring in a big way, while Michael Pandolfo’s efforts were recognised as best on. For the Westbourne Grammarians, Benjamin Hodge and Ali Eqbal were their only goal kickers and Cooper Read their best player.

It appears that Canterbury are peaking at the exact right time, collecting scalps on their way to a finals berth, while Elsternwick have hit a roadblock, with back-to-back losses after starting the season unbeaten. South Melbourne Districts still remain at the top though with only one loss for the year so far. A low-scoring affair between Emmaus St Leo’s and Parkside at Bennettswood Reserve has seen the away side take the win by just three points. The game was mostly on the Red Devils’ terms for the first half, though there seemed to be little reward for effort on the scoreboard for both sides. The Animals were down by five goals at the beginning of the final quarter, but quickly made them back, only to fall just short of the victory after some missed opportunities. Dan Hill (3), Jonathan Greensides and Zac Kearns were the home side’s only goal scorers as Leiwyn Jones took top honours. For Parkside, all six of their goals came from individual kickers, with Jackson Hubbard, Benedict Douglas, Simon Mackie, Shane Doherty, Ian Romano, and Matthew Soligo all on the board. Michael Romano was best on.

Seven individual goal kickers has seen Hawthorn beat Richmond Central by 43 points at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. The Snakes were on the back foot early as the Hawks piled on six goals in the first time, before they mounted a slight comeback to be only 28 points down at half time. But it wasn’t to be, with a low-scoring second half that saw the away side limit their opposition to just two goals, while kicking only four themselves. William Meehan (4) and Charlie Lee (2) were stellar in front of goal, but it was Aaron Downie’s two majors that earned him best-on honours. For the home side, Daniel Martin, Alexander Benson, Jack Hartley, and Dane Roy kicked a goal each, and Dylan Curnow (1) was their best.

Canterbury’s fast starts have continued, this time putting Elsternwick to the sword by 32 points at Holmes Todd Oval. A ten-goal-to-four first half set the scene for another Cobras win, with the Wickers seeming unable to stem the tide against a fast-moving opposition kicking accurately on the scoreboard. Not even a late, seven-goal final term could get the home side over the line. Thomas Lowden (7) once again starred in front of goal to be Canterbury’s best player, while Jordan Dear (5) and Ryan Murray (3) rode shotgun in the forward line. Elsternwick’s spread of eight individual goalkickers had Peter Cassidy kicking three to take top honours, while Daniel Marchese and Dylan Jones both snagged to each of their own. After a week off, North Brunswick return to Allard Park and will be met with a challenging Canterbury side fresh off a galvanising away win. The Cobras are almost unbeatable at this stage of the season and the Bulls will need everything they’ve got. A tough battle awaits Richmond Central, who travel to face an in-form South Melbourne Districts at Lindsay Hassett Oval. With finals still in the equation, the Snakes would love to cause an upset to get back on the winner’s list. Pitcher Park is the destination for Elsternwick this weekend as they’re welcomed by Parkside. It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for the Wickers, while the Red Devils will likely still be riding high on the adrenaline of a thriller win in round eleven. The Westbourne Grammarians will travel to Rathmines Road Reserve to take on Hawthorn. Both sides are looking to get back onto the winner’s list, with the Hawks still holding onto a very slim finals chance. A well-timed bye for Emmaus St Leo’s sees them with the week off to get ready to attack the latter half of the season, and with their hold on the top four seemingly slipping through their hands, there is much work to be done.

La Trobe reach the top as Masala makes a statement Box Hill North vs St Johns

Round 11 saw matches that could shape the rest of the season for Division 4 take place. Whilst some of the matches answered questions some may have, others raised more questions and made the division that more interesting as we near finals.

Box Hill North and St Johns would do battle in the second game of the round. From the start St Johns dominated, getting the early start over the Demons and taking a 37-point lead into quarter time. The Demons made a slight comeback in the second quarter kicking 3 goals and only allowing 1 goal from the JOCS to bring the margin back to 24 points.

The first match of the round saw Albert Park take on La Trobe. As we’ve seen before and we saw here, La Trobe got off to a dominant start kicking 5 goals to the Falcons’ 1 leading to a 27-point lead at quarter time. The Falcons however quickly rebounded and replicated the previous quarter of La Trobe’s kicking 5 goals in the second to bring the margin back to 6 points at halftime.

The third quarter saw the JOCS bring the game back onto their terms kicking 6 goals to the Demons’ 2 goals bringing the lead back out to 49 points. The JOCs then turned it on again in the fourth quarter kicking 4 unanswered goals and ending the game in dominant fashion winning by 75 points.

The third saw both teams play a more defensive style with only a combined 3 goals kicked for the quarter, 2 of which were kicked by La Trobe, which helped extend the lead out to 15 points. With the final quarter, and the game, for the taking and entirely up for grabs, La Trobe stormed home with the victory kicking a massive 7 goals and taking out the game by 62 points.

The best for the Demons were Beau Parthenides, Austin Wilcox and David Edwards whilst the best for the JOCS were Brendan Ash, Jeremy Lay and Jed Dexter. The main goal kicker for the Demons was Peter Cassidy-Marsh who kicked 2. Sean Donovan, Cameron Liston and Michael Maertzdorf kicked 1 goal each for the Demons. Jason Naffa (3) led the goal kicking for the JOCs with Dylan Harris (2), Nicholas Terrill (2) and Liam Salisbury (2) being the other main contributors.

The best for the Falcons were William Marshall, Jack Lee, Mackenzie Hyder & Sam Lee. The best for La Trobe were Bryce Dowler, Thomas Whelan and Ben Vicary. The main goal kicker for the Falcons was Jack Lee who added another 6 goals to his tally. Other goal kickers include Enver Krasnic and Alistair Lupo who both kicked a goal. La Trobe’s goal-kicking trio once again contributed significantly combining for 14 of the 16 goals. Bryce Dowler kicked 6, Tate Spiteri kicked 5 and Riley Alexander kicked 3 in what was a dominant display by La Trobe.

Box Hill will face another top challenge as they take on a Swinburne that will be hungry to get the top spot back. The JOCs will host the Sharks in what is an important match. Masala vs Swinburne The final match of the round saw Masala take on Swinburne in what was the division’s match of the round. The game started even however it was the Razorbacks that took a slight advantage heading into quarter time holding a 4-point lead. The Tigers then turned their intensity up in the second adding on 5 goals and in the process taking a 24-point lead into half-time.

Albert Park will now have the bye before they take on Box Hill North in round 13. La Trobe will now face the in-form Masala in a twilight fixture in what should be the match of the round.

To get back into the game, the Razorbacks would need to get off to a good start and have a good third quarter and that they did. Swinburne kicked 6 unanswered goals, taking the lead back from the Tigers and holding a 16-point lead heading into the final term. The fourth quarter saw another momentum swing as Masala fought back into the game and held a 5-point lead as the game entered ‘red time’. With 7 minutes left on the clock, the Razorbacks hit the front through Ben Cox. However, you can never count out Masala as the Tigers would hit back kicking the next two goals and run away with another close victory. Masala’s best included Noah Scott, Brandon Kelly & Dale Gibb whilst the best for the Razorbacks were Thomas Hartney, Zachary Lassey and Ben Cox. Declan Fowler, Thomas Edwards and Anthony Dorrington all kicked 4 goals for the Tigers whilst the leading goal kickers for Swinburne were Benjamin Cox (4) and Declan Watts (2). Masala will now make the trip down to La Trobe in what is another tough fixture for the Tigers. Swinburne will look to rebound as they face a struggling Box Hill North outfit. Eley Park who had the bye will now take on St Johns in what will be an important but tough game for the Sharks.

MILESTONES

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Emilia Bisogni (Ivanhoe AFC) – 50 Games

50

100

Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates Ivies captain Emilia Bisogni on her 50th game for the club in Round 11. “Milz” played in the Div 1 grand final in 2018 and was runner-up in the Ivies B&F last year, despite missing four games through injury. Emilia is a natural team leader whose loyalty and dedication is much respected. A fast and fierce competitor, Emilia always strives to beat her opponent. And when she gets the footy, she has a happy knack of making something happen. She can play either end of the ground and also rotate through midfield, making her a huge asset to the team. Even when she had a broken hand last season, she trained one-handed to support her teammates. A big well done to our perfect number 10. You are truly one of the greats. Ben Hays (Old Scotch) – 100 Games Congratulations to Ben Hays on reaching 100 games for the Old Scotch Football Club last week. Haysie joined the club from Scotch College in 2015, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s. He moved into the senior ranks in 2017, where he made his 1st XVIII debut and has been a regular there since. Haysie was a member of the 2019 Premier ‘B’ 1st XVIII Grand Final team. We wish Haysie all the best on reaching this major milestone. Talia Haberman (Glen Eira) - 150 games

150

The Glen Eira Gryphons congratulate Talia Haberman on reaching her 150 game milestone. Talia is a new Gryphon this year after playing the majority of her football with the St. Kilda City Sharks before an ACL injuring stranded her short of her milestone. We are pleased have been able to get Talia over the line for this terrific achievement and the team has been lucky to have such an experienced player join the team this year. Well done Talia! Catherine O’Bryan (Melbourne Uni) – 150 Games The Melbourne University Women’s FC will proudly be celebrating Catherine ‘Cato’ O’Bryan’s 150th milestone game this weekend against West Brunswick in the club’s inaugural First Nation’s round. Cato began her football journey in 2006 with St Kilda Sharks before making the switch to MUWFC in 2009. Cato made an immediate impact both in the ruck and up forward, becoming an important member in the then senior VWFL and VFLW sides leading to be selected in the VIC Metro v VIC Country rep match in 2014. She was selected by her peers to be part of the VFLW leadership group and was known on field by her teammates and rivals for wearing her signature goggles.

150

In 2018 Cato joined West Preston FC dominating the NFNL achieving a hall of awards such as the Div 2 Women’s B&F, the club’s B&F, Premiership winning player, Best on ground in Div 2 GF, and was appointed the NFNL representative captain. Cato returned to MUWFC in 2021 where she became a minor VAFA Premier B premiership player due to Covid-19 cancelling the finals series. For her efforts Cato was awarded the Seniors Coaches award. Cato is an all round club person. Beloved by her teammates for her incredible wit, Cato is also there to lend her support to those that need it. In 2022 Cato was selected co-vice captain inspiring the next generation of footballers who have named her Shiraz, due to aging like fine wine. Sam Williams (De La Salle) - 250 Games

250

De La Salle would like to congratulate one of the club’s most decorated players, Sam Williams on 250 VAFA games. Sam was an under 19 premiership player, captain and Best & Fairest winner who made his senior debut way back in 2008. He is a two-time senior Best and Fairest winner, has several other placings and is the recipient of numerous other club awards. Sam represented the VAFA on many occasions, and for several years was an automatic selection. A hard running player with exceptional skills and endurance, Sam also played VFL football for Collingswood in 2012 and 2013. The eldest of three Williams brothers to play senior football for the club, he is the son of past premiership player and club president Richard. Sam was senior co-captain between 2014 and 2017 and is without question one of the clubs finest ever players.

SKOB Saints run over Kew in top-of-table clash Sitting one game behind the top four, Caulfield Grammarians were needing a win to keep themselves in touch with the top of the ladder when they came up against West Brunswick. West Brunswick were looking good early on, covering the ground well and making good use of space. Caulfield were not to be outdone and showed why they are vying for a finals finish, by being the first to score. Caulfield were effective when they had possession of the ball and kept the play in their attacking area early. It was a slow start to the second quarter for both teams with the ball spending a lot of time in packs on the ground. Again, it was Caulfield who got the first score. From here they went on a run and took control of the game by adding another three goals, to give them a five-goal lead heading into half time. The third quarter saw a stronger defence from West Brunswick, they were closer to their opponents, restricting the run which came from Caulfield in the second quarter. Throughout the quarter, West Brunswick continued to keep up the pace with Caulfield, limiting them to just one goal. The reward finally came for West Brunswick deep into the third where they finally got their first goal. The final term followed the same play as the third quarter with Caulfield doing all they could to hold onto their lead. The play was scrappy throughout the final quarter with both teams looking fatigued. Neither team were able to get a score and so it was Caulfield who got the win to hold on to the third spot on the ladder.

made a statement with a very early goal. It was a good momentum starter that saw them take control of the game and add another four goals to their tally for the quarter. Old Xaverians had set themselves up for a victory with St Marys having no answer for the strong attacking game. In the last term all Old Xaverians needed to do was keep St Marys at bay. Defensively they got the job done until the last part of the quarter where St Marys got their second goal of the day. Despite not scoring themselves, it was enough for Old Xaverians to claim a much-needed win.

With St Mary’s Salesian still looking for their first win of the year and Old Xaverians coming off a tough loss in round eleven, this was anyone’s game. It was a relatively even start to the game with St Mary’s Salesian showing some positive signs early, restricting Old Xaverians any free flowing play. Both teams were playing equally measured football and sharing the play with neither making a real statement on the game. Old Xaverians showed some positive signs kicking two goals in the first quarter and stopping St Marys from scoring at all. The second quarter saw results in attack for St Marys with them getting a goal to pay off for all the strong effort they had made in defence. Again, defensively they showed improvement from earlier games this year and limited Old Xaverians to just one goal for the second quarter to keep themselves in touch at the half time break. After the main break it was Old Xaverians who came out and

It was a top of the table clash between St Kevin’s and Kew, and in true St Kevin’s form, they had scored within the first few minutes of the match showing the Kew backline that they were going to be in for a busy day ahead. After the first goal, Kew showed some strength to control the ball and hold the play in their half of the ground. Despite this they were unable to put any scoreboard pressure on St Kevin’s, making for a low scoring first term. Kew were able to keep their pressure up on St Kevin’s in the second quarter and the game continued to be a tight even contest. The scoring of both teams was hampered by the conditions and credit to the Kew defence keeping St Kevin’s to just four goals until half time. As the third quarter went on, St Kevin’s began to look stronger and stronger, they were running over the top of Kew and started to win more contests at ground level. The result was another three goal quarter for St Kevin’s

With Marcellin showing some strong form in round ten, Melbourne Uni needed to come out with their best football to get themselves a win. The fighting spirit that we have come to see from Melbourne Uni was on full display early on. They were smothering the ball handler with their pressure and tackling fiercely, giving Marcellin no room. It was an evenly matched game on the scoreboard with Melbourne Uni taking a very narrow four-point lead into half time. The poor weather conditions didn’t help the scoring either, with Melbourne Uni sitting at one goal six. The scoreline showed that they had plenty of the ball in their forward line but were needing to steady themselves in front of goals to get a win. Marcellin struggled to maintain possession of the ball when they had it. Melbourne Uni were able to capitalise on the mistakes made by Marcellin and keep control of the ball in their half of the ground for most of the second half. Going into the final term it was still just the four points dividing the two teams in Melbourne Uni’s favour. The final term saw Melbourne Uni continue their strong hunt for the ball, taking possession in the majority of the contests. Defensively Melbourne Uni were also able to keep the ball out of Marcellin’s hands to ensure that they got themselves the win. One goal in the final term was enough for a Melbourne Uni win, which gives them a handy two game buffer in the fourth spot on the ladder.
