SEASON 2023 - July 8
2023 Big V Teams Announced
On Wednesday, the VAFA was pleased to announce the Big V Senior Men’s and Women’s teams for the first time since 2019, that will take on Perth Football League on Saturday, July 15 at Elsternwick Park.
Coaches Greg Hutchison and Paul Groves have selected 28 players in their respective teams (interchange, plus emergencies) in the lead up to the game.
The VAFA Men’s team is represented across William Buck Premier, Premier B, and Premier C Men’s. The 18-players on the field are locked in, with the final four players will come from the 10-man interchange bench after this weekend of footy.
Seven players from Old Scotch have been selected, four players from Collegians, and three players from both St Kevin’s and Old Xaverians.
Congratulations to Old Melburnians Josh Freezer who has been selected for the fifth time after making his Big V debut in 2016. Freezer, and Harry Thompson (Old Trinity) are the two selected players from the most recent Big V side to take the field in 2019. They’ll both be out for redemption, along with the rest of the side to return to the winners list.
2022 Anytime Fitness rising star Luke Winter has also been selected after a stellar start to his senior career.
The VAFA Women’s team will be aiming to make it four straight wins for the Big V after comprehensively beating AFL Goldfields by 151 points in 2019.
A total of five from Melbourne University Women has been selected as part of the 28-women squad. Followed by four from the reigning premiers St Kevin’s, and Old Scotch. Coburg, in their inaugural year in the competition feature two players whilst Old Melburnians and Marcellin are both represented from Division 1 Women’s. It is a credit to the 28 players listed, all of them will be first time representatives of the Big V.
Paul Groves paid tribute to the players selected to wear the Big V in 2023. “Narrowing our squad of 50 down to 28 has been extremely difficult with the exciting enthusiasm from all the women invited to training. Those clubs who have players both who have been selected but also those who have missed out should be really proud in the way they have been represented at Rep level. We hope the clubs show their support on the 15th” he told VAFA Media.
“We’ve got a few players who played VAFA games for the first few months who have forced their VFLW to select them and now embark on elimination finals this weekend.”
“We have a squad of 28 quality people who have been extremely impressive both on and off field over the past 3 weeks of the program.”
“We now get ready to launch into preparations next week for the big game on Saturday the 15th.”
With a bye round scheduled next week, the VAFA are looking forward to seeing a large crowd in attendance at Elsternwick Park to support both teams. The women’s match will commence at 11am, followed by the men’s at 2pm.
Entry is just $10 for adults to cover the game costs, with children U12 free. For those wanting to watch from behind the glass in the comfort of a heated room, an official match day function will run in the Elsternwick Park social room from 12pm to 3pm, with ground entry, all-inclusive drinks and food provided throughout the three hours for just $75. Further details and bookings for the match and official function can be found online at VAFA.com.au
For anyone who can’t attend the game, uninterrupted radio coverage will be provided by RSN Xtra2 from 9:30am –5:00pm, whilst both games will be live-streamed on the VAFA Website, VAFA Facebook and KommunityTV on the Herald Sun website.

Shop early, and avoid the rush
This weekend in William Buck Premier marks the conclusion of the second-third of the 2023 VAFA season.
As we move into the final third of the season, Collegians, and Old Scotch have put themselves in strong positions on the ladder. A slip up from University Blues and St Kevin’s have left them somewhat vulnerable with Old Xaverians and Old Brighton clipping at their heels.
One of the reasons for Collegians and Old Scotch sitting in the top two on the table can be traced back to the way they’ve started games in 2023.
While the focus at the Cardinals has been how well they finish off games, and run out the full 120 minutes. Only Collegians (9-2) have a better win-loss record in opening terms (Old Scotch 8-3 in first quarters). The ability to set up the game early in a contest, and take the game away from their opposition has been on show throughout the first 11 weeks.
On the flipside, the Old Melburnians are yet to win an opening term in 2023. From the 11 opening quarters this year, on 4 occasions they’ve been held to 1 goal, compounding that, the last three weeks they haven’t been able to find a goal. Seven times from 11 first quarters, they’ve netted four goals.
As they come into their contest with Old Haileybury this weekend, they cannot afford yet another slow start. The emotional energy of chasing the contest to make up the ground they’ve lost must be taxing on a team that’s also battling with players overseas, and a long injury list.
Whilst the ladder will show four wins in the column, and for the moment two games clear of the Bloods in ninth spot. The formline of Old Haileybury in opening terms in the last month has been impressive, the upset victory over Old Scotch and pushing Old Brighton for everything they had gives Daniel Ward plenty to be confident about.
Earlier this year, the sides competed in a shootout, the highest scoring contest of the season. Tom Baker (broken arm) kicked eight on that particular day. Buoyed by Big V selections, Josh Freezer and Ben Harding will be prominent for the OM’s. Brodie Steele at Old Haileybury is having a stellar season.
Old Haileybury return to Elsternwick Park for the first time since the Premier B Grand Final, they know how to play the ground, and what it takes to win there. A victory here tightens up the relegation zone, the opening term is critical for both these sides.
For the week of Round 11, University Blues sat in second spot on the table after six wins in a row. A trouncing at the hands of Collegians has seen them displaced and Old Scotch return back into the top two.
The Cardinals outworked Old Melburnians last week, and responded professionally after their shock loss to Old Haileybury. James Tarrant returned to his best form in the forward line, Aiden Franetic franked his Big V form as did Brodie Easton.
It’s clear for all to see that Old Scotch finish games strongly, Mark Gnatt doesn’t want to leave games in the balance at three quarter time and bank on that though. Hence the boldness in which they start games with.
University Blues are a middle-of-the-table side when it comes to opening terms, having won five from 11 in 2023. The last three weeks they’ve been outscored by 51 points in the first quarter. The experience in the side has seen them work their way into games, and use that to overpower the younger players on the park. While all sides are reliant on their top six players, the Blues might have received the biggest dent last weekend, Ed Ziebarth, Charlie Furphy and Jeremy Goddard all out of the midfield in one foul swoop.
Two of the three losses for the Blues have been wallopings at the hands of Collegians (94 points) and Old Scotch (103 points) earlier this year. Old Scotch are on a 5-game winning streak against them, and relish the battle.
If the Cardinals get the jump on the Blues this weekend, they’ll find themselves with a 1-game gap and a percentage gap of over 65% with six weeks to go.
The RSN Xtra Match of the Day is the next installment of Old Brighton and St Kevin’s. Last year’s Grand Finalists have been on different trajectories since the meeting in Round 6.
Heading into that match, SKOB were 5-0 (and 5-0 in first quarters), the Tonners 4-1 (4-1 in first quarters). Since that game, Brighton have gone 1-4, St Kevin’s 2-3. Not the formlines anyone would have picked at the conclusion of Round 6.
Harry Hill will feature in this game, he wasn’t there in the previous meeting. Ben Pryor could be joined by Will Lewis in the forward line to stretch the St Kevin’s defence, whilst Sam Critchley is out. This could be a Dan Donati coaching masterclass.
St Kevin’s walked off the Melbourne Uni on Sunday disheartened in the scoreboard. Inaccuracy in front of goal, after dominating possession of the ball hurts significantly.
Anthony Lynch is experiencing his own coaching challenges, three debutants from the Under 19’s on the weekend, injuries and travel. No one wants to be losing games of footy, but this last month has been a great teacher for the 2022 master coach and the challenges that have confronted the reigning premiers will hold them in good stead.
There’s been much discussion this year about “the scheduler” for the radio game. History is on the side of broadcasters when it comes to Old Brighton vs. St Kevin’s at Brighton Beach Oval. The previous three matches have been decided by three points, three points and four points. More of the same please.
It’s been some return to William Buck Premier for University Blacks. Like fellow promoted sides Old Haileybury they have put a print on the VAFA’s top-flight throughout the first 11 weeks.
Rusted on Uni Blacks fans will argue they’ve been stiff to not have another couple of wins in the column. Yet they’ll equally applaud the way they’ve acquitted themselves in 2023. A terrific four quarter performance against Old Xaverians earlier this year was not a oneoff given what they were able to produce against St Kevin’s.
Withstanding the St Kevin’s onslaught, Blacks were able to stay composed with the ball in hand, led by Campbell Moorfield in defence, Louis Vescio in the midfield and Nick Hey in the forward line. Old Xaverians have got themselves a challenge to break through the Moorfield wall, along with Joel Ernest and Sam McKenzie ready to pick off the long-ball.
What a battle the midfield promises to be, the wiley veteran of Bede Mahon against one of the top five in the competition, Marcus Stavrou. The red and black mafia will be hoping Campbell Lane is with them again this week after 55 touches on Saturday.
Five of the Big V 28 are competing in this game, they’ll be enemies for four quarters, before turning teammates next weekend. There might be some frostiness around Tuesday night training if Blacks head out to Xavier College and cause chaos, not only on the scoreboard, but in the context of the ladder.
Collegians are the #1 seed as it stands in 2023. The strongest opening quarter side. The most prolific overall scorers. Two wins by over 100 points, another last weekend by 94.
And if that’s not enough for you, the defence is a brick wall; the past fortnight they’ve kept the opposition to 49 points. This is an incredible team profile for the side who’s gone 19-2 since Round 8 last year in home and away games.
Individually, Sam Hibbins returned to his very best form last weekend. Sam Sofrinidis, Luke McCleary, Dave Mirra and King Kenny Ong have all been named in the Big V side.
Caulfield will be hopeful of competing with the ladder leaders. Ignited by the return last weekend of captain Joe McClleland. They managed nine goals in the first half against the Lions in Round 6, however were held goalless in the second half.
If the Fields are to have any chance, they’ll need to shop early, and avoid the rush. Then go again in the second quarter, the third quarter, and the final term. Despite the laconic, relaxed nature of Jared Rivers, the Lions are ruthless in 2023 and not prepared to just bank four points without inflicting footy pain on opposition.
Opening quarters are always filled with excitement, verve and nervous energy. It sets up your day, and in the case of some clubs, has set up their season. While it’s only 30 of the 120 minutes, it plays a factor on the tone of the day.
As every coach has said to their troops, whether conscious of it or not - Shop early and avoid the rush.

Grammarians back in contention whilst others continue to dominate
Caulfield Grammarians are starting to fire up with finals on the horizon; their win on Saturday making it three in a row. Meanwhile, Kew, SKOB and Collegians all rolled on with wins to cement their place in finals.
Caulfield Grammarians dominated the game early, kicking 3.2 to Fitzroy’s 1.2 in the first half. Another goal in the third quarter helped to cement the win. Whilst Fitzroy raised hopes of a comeback with a late goal in the fourth, it wasn’t enough to get the job done.
Chloe O’Malley continued her strong form in front of goals, having only gone goalless once this season. Serena Kuo, Aana Rogers and Tarryn Hurst were also goalkickers for Caulfield. Meanwhile for Fitzroy, Sara Guerra was their best and finished with a goal.
Caulfield Grammarians face their biggest challenge next week against SKOB at Righetti oval, as they look to go four in a row. Elsewhere, Fitzroy will host Coburg.
It was the match of the round and Collegians lived up to the occasion, defeating Old Scotch by 19 points to notch their 7th win of the season. The margin had the potential to be much bigger, with Collegians kicking eight behinds in what was a wayward day in front of goals for them.
Old Scotch were unable to register a goal in the first half, demonstrating Collegians defensive dominance throughout the game. For the Cardinals, Alexandra Mcculloch kicked a goal to be their best, as did Mia Caffry and Olivia Mccredie.
Jessy Gardner was the only multiple goal scorer of the day, whilst it was Kate Dudley who was the best on ground for Collegians.
Collegians will feature in the match of the round again next weekend, when they host Kew. Old Scotch will host Melbourne Uni.
Kew rolled onto victory again this weekend, proving themselves as the biggest threat having not lost so far this season, sitting comfortably on top of the ladder. West Brunswick came in all guns blazing ready to face the top dogs.
A big first half set the game up for Kew, kicking 4.4 to 1.0. Whilst they only scored one point after the first half, they also managed to limit West Brunswick to 1.1 after half time.
Michaela Harding was named the best for Kew for the first time this season, having been in the mix across three games this season. Chloe Leighton was also named in the best after kicking a goal. Ella Banfield was the best for the Magpies to back up a strong performance against Fitzroy last weekend.
The Magpies have the bye next weekend, whilst Kew will travel to take on Collegians.
It was a close battle between Melbourne Uni Women’s and St Kevin’s, with SKOB running out seven-point winners in the end. It was a high scoring affair in the first half, with a score of 2.2-14 to 3.1-19. However, it dropped off after there, with both teams registering only one goal after the main break.

Be weary of the Tigers awakening from their slumber
The Premier B Men’s ladder is a fascinating watch with seven rounds to go.
The weekend itself was a fascinating watch, just in isolation. St Bernard’s nearly pipped at the post by Williamstown CYMS, Old Trinity stay in touch with the four Old Geelong take the spoils at Brunswick St Oval, St Bede’s Mentone/Tigers in the battle of bayside reigned supreme whilst De Le Salle pushed into third on the table.
In one of the games of the year, St Bede’s Mentone/Tigers prevailed against Beaumaris at Brindisi St Oval.
With the Tigers getting the jump on the Sharks, it was Beauy that clawed their way to a nine point lead at halftime. A tight third term had them in front by seven points at the final change, before St Bede’s Mentone/Tigers were able to wrestle back momentum and the lead, pulling away to win by 12 points.
Caleb Lewis was instrumental for the home side with four goals in a best on ground performance. Along with Braydon O’Toole (3 goals) and Zac Calvez.
Two wins in a row against top four contenders holds the Tigers in good stead. This weekend they face Ajax. Beaumaris have lost their last three matches and need to arrest the slide. The toughest task in Premier B footy awaits them this weekend, St Bernard’s.
In a battle of the top four, Old Geelong trekked to Brunswick St Oval to face Fitzroy.
The game began with a heavy heart for all Fitzroy supporters after the tragic passing of Fitzroy legend Matt Rendell last week. All players standing to remember Rendell, and paying tribute to his life before the bounce.
Earlier this year, these sides played in a 1-point thriller. At three quarter time, the OG’s held a 23 point lead and looked set for victory.
Fitzroy managed to kick two goals in the final term as the OG’s were held scoreless. The lead in the end was enough, but far from comfortable for Nathan Brown.
The four points keeps Old Geelong in fifth spot, equal with Beaumaris and SBMT. The percentage will play a factor in the run home.
The Roys will be keen to turn the tables on that loss this weekend facing off against Old Trinity this Friday night at the Daley Oval. Old Geelong head back to Como Park to face Williamstown.
In another hard fought encounter St Bernard’s had to scrap, grind and push their way to win number 11 in 2023 against Williamstown.
The CY’s threw everything at the Snowdogs, it wasn’t until the final siren blew that Steve Alessio could rest easy.
In captain Mitch Hughes’ 150th club game, it was Mark “G-Train” Gregory who booted five goals in the win. He switched between time in the midfield and forward line, awarded best on ground honours. Stepping up in the absence of players overseas and through injury.
The turnaround in Williamstown is to be commended, a three game winning streak and serving it up to the benchmark of the competition. Nine changes to the line up, including five debutants. This club has plenty to smile about and be proud of the way they’ve developed as this year has unfolded.
Round 12 sees both sides on the road, St Bernard’s can just about lock in top spot if they’re to beat Beaumaris. Williamstown can avoid relegation all together and potentially move four games clear of Ajax if they beat Old Geelong.
After a strong first half from Ajax against De La Salle, it was the boys of the Dairybell who pulled away after halftime to record their fourth win from their last five matches.
Coming off a close loss to the Snowdogs, the blue and gold are in strong form and a side to be reckoned with in 2023. They’ve been somewhat of a sleeping giant over the last couple of years, and now those young troops Brian Waldron tells everyone about is at an age ready to compete with the best.
Adrian Indovino is having a stellar individual season with 23 goals to his name, another three on the weekend. The Jackers are finding the going tough in 2023, a third close loss in a row. They’re thereabouts, competitive and pushing teams, they just haven’t been able to get it to click.
Maybe it will this weekend against St Bede’s Mentone/ Tigers?
De La will be looking to boost the percentage against Monash, and close to within a game of Fitzroy in second spot.
Old Trinity have kept themselves in touch with the top four after a 46 point win over Monash to close out the round.
Jack Jenkins (4 goals) led the charge. Along with midfielder Alex Emery, and the most famous face at the T’s, Harry Thompson.
Had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal, the margin could have been significantly greater for the T’s as percentage becomes so much more important in the run to the finals.
James Flett, and Daniel Easson again stood up for the twoblues. They’ve been shining lights all year for them, and will continue to put themselves in that spot, leading the way for the younger brigade of troops coming through.
Friday night footy returns to Premier B this week, Old Trinity playing host to Fitzroy under the lights of the Daley Oval. Monash travel out to Waverley Oval to face De La Salle.

Cobras give Monash the blues in a long-awaited match against their top competition
The Old Yarra Cobras hosted their top competition over the weekend, the Monash Blues, who have been topping the ladder for the majority of the season. In a match where defensive efforts peaked, the Cobras were triumphant, stealing the show and beating the Blues by 11 points. Although it was a week of success for the Cobras, it is still the Blues in top position, with goal percentage separating the teams.
Johannah Dallas stepped up for her team, scoring Monash›s only goal, and Caitlin Williams using her defensive talents to shorten the margin between the final scores. Alannah Murray and Illiana Zafiriou made their contributions, scoring one goal each for the Cobras, with Mia Giannopoulos displaying a best-on-field performance.
Next round the Cobras will come head-to-head with the mighty Mazenod OC as the Blues take on the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.
In what was a close encounter, Brunswick came home victorious from their outing to the home grounds on Mazenod OC over the weekend. It was a match that had viewers on the edge of their seats with a margin of three points between the final outcomes.
Although Mazenod suffered an unfortunate loss, it was a joyous weekend for Nolene Kingi who scored two goals and worked alongside best player Wyinta Cengiz-Mawson. Hopefully, these efforts will continue in next week›s home match against the Cobras. Charlotte Skinner was a major contribution to Brunswick’s success, by scoring two goals for her team. Madison Bromley was a stand-out player for Brunswick and was deemed best-on-field. Can they continue their celebrations after next round›s match against Aquinas OC?
Richmond Central played a home match on Saturday with the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers reigning supreme, as accuracy was a major downfall.
Scoring a total of six goals and four behinds, Laura Amelung and Tanisha Binios contributed two goals each with Olivia Watkins and Courtney Ward scoring one goal each.
Best player was awarded to Madeleine Tilley who displayed great persistence. Although unsuccessful, Georgia Mcdonald scored a goal for Richmond, with Katherine Brown, putting on an incredible defensive performance as their best player.
Next week Richmond Central will head to the home grounds of North Brunswick, and the tigers will trek to the home of the Monash Blues.
Aquinas OC left the home grounds of North Brunswick on Saturday afternoon with their heads held high, in a match that was theirs from the very beginning. In another unfortunate game for North Brunswick, they were unable to make their mark, scoring only two behinds, to Aquinas’ 7.13. Mary Ntalianis was recognised for her efforts, as best-on-field for Brunswick.
It was an outstanding week for Aquinas representative Sienna Jones who scored three goals and was also deemed best-on-field. Also contributing to their success was Hannah Mclean, Jenna White, Aisling Broderick and Holly Spicer who scored one goal each. Can Sienna continue to step up for her team in next week›s match against Brunswick and will North Brunswick finally reign supreme, up against Richmond Central?

PEGS stellar in a come-from-behind performance
For one of the rare occasions in the VAFA season, we’ve had a weekend where everything seemingly went to the script.
Hampton Rovers almost pulled off a brilliant upset against PEGS down in Essendon. Holding a 27 point lead at three quarter time, it was the stuff of brilliance in the final term from the Division 1 premiers.
7.6.48 to no score saw them close the lead, take the lead and then pull away from the Rovers.
Will Crawford did the damage early for the green and gold, along with Christian Carnovale. But when PEGS got going it was Jack Fenner, Alex McLeod, Blake Roach and Mitchell Baker-West.
The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Rovers who controlled the tempo of the game for most of the afternoon. The loss still has them not safe from relegation, while PEGS victory keeps them pushing towards the top two on the table.
Another tough task awaits the Rovers this weekend, Old Ivanhoe, fresh off a bye at Boss James Reserves. PEGS head out to Carey to tackle the Panthers.
Old Camberwell set up their 36 point victory over Old Carey in the first half with 11 goals to five.
Riley Verbi looked dangerous again with four goals to his name. Finlayson, Laukens and Powell combined for six goals between them.
David McColl was the man named best on ground for the Wellers as they made it six wins in a row.
Tom Jepson kicked four goals for the Panthers, they were coming off the bye and were slow to get into the contest. They’ll be looking for a much faster start this weekend against PEGS, a side they played out a draw with in Round 7.
Old Camberwell play host to Mazenod at Gordon Barnard Reserve. Earlier this year, it was a hard fought seven point win for the Wellers, can the Nodders turn the tables?
Mazenod enters that contest buoyed by a 77 point victory over Ormond. Fletcher Ford the focal point with six goals in a best on ground performance.
A 28-point half time lead exploded out to 72 points at three quarter time as the Nodders put the foot down with seven goals to just one behind.
They’ve now won three games in a row since their round eight bye and look like a threat to Old Camberwell, Old Ivanhoe and PEGS.
The Monders are languishing in the bottom two and desperate for a win. They’re 2 games behind the Rovers, and equal with Marcellin in 10th spot. Could they cause a boilover facing Parkdale Vultues this weekend?
Parkdale didn’t have it all their own way against Marcellin in the first three quarters of the contest at Marcellin College.
After jumping out to a 4-goal lead, Marcellin was able to get within a couple of goals by three quarter time.
Ryan MacDermid was again stellar for the Vultures with another five goals. Luke Bailey kicked four goals in a best on ground performance. The Vultures remain a game behind Mazenod in fifth spot. This weekend could prove to be an absolute classic and determine that spot in the four come finals time.
Josh Posar’s last month for Marcellin has been building. Eight goals across his last four games. Three on the weekend underlined his influence in the forward line. And, for the third straight week Matt Capetola features amongst the best.
They’ll head to the bye this weekend hopeful of coming back with a winning formula in Round 14.

NAIDOC Week
Ivanhoe AFC Indigenous Jumper
Ivanhoe Amateurs players proudly wore the club’s firstever indigenous jumpers designed by AFL legend Nicky Winmar in Round 11. Winmar was inspired to design the jumpers after AFL clubs showcased indigenousthemed tops during the Sir Douglas Nicholls rounds last May 19-28.
Winmar used black and white vertical marks to denote Ivanhoe’s traditional strip. Smaller markings speckled over the jumper represented “stars of your past people looking over you”. Indigenous images at the bottom of the jumpers were his nod to the Wurundjeri people“the local mob of this area”.
Parkside
In celebration of NAIDOC week, the Parkside Seniors, Reserves and Women’s teams wore the club’s Indigenous jumper for the first time. Designed by junior club members Jack Ison and Mingara Clark, the boys worked with local Indigenous artists Tyson Austin and Troi-Sarai Ilsey to bring these to Pitcher Park.
Richmond
Our incredible NAIDOC Round jumper was put together by the talented Ryan Griffin, using two very special pieces of artwork. Taking influence and inspiration from the club’s NAIDOC artwork, designed by former Snakes Kirra Grimes and Micheal Naawi, Yuin artist Robert Naylor has created an amazing new piece for the club. Our Indigenous jumper weaves the history of the Richmond Central Snakes with a Dreaming story and our place on beautiful Wurundjeri Country where we live, train and play.
Melbourne Uni Women’s FC
Melbourne Uni Women’s FC: On game day we were honoured to be joined by Wurundjeri Elder, Uncle bill Nicholson, who conducted a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.
Uncle Bill taught us more about the history and the culture of the peoples whose land we gathered on and where we are so fortunate to train and play. Thank you to Steven Mallia for capturing both teams in our First Nations jumpers.
University Blacks v St Kevin’s
University Blacks celebrated Indigenous Round against St Kevin’s, a day they regard to be “one of the most important on the calendar and one [they] are unbelievably proud to participate in”. Uni Blacks received a Strategic Community Investment Grant from AFL Victoria under the ‘Grow and diversify participation’ element, for our Indigenous Round, to purchase two sets of Indigenous jumpers for the club and the design of the jumper by a Yorta Yorta women, Alkina Edwards @alkinacreations.

HOERS HELPER FRANK DEFIES AGE BARRIER
Club volunteer Frank Williams has taken his commitment to Ivanhoe Amateurs to a new level after playing in the reserves in Round 11. Frank put his hand up to play after Thursday night training when it became apparent that the reserves team was going to struggle for numbers on Saturday morning. At age 57, Frank has become the oldest known player in the club’s history.
Lining up in a forward pocket, Frank soon won a free kick. His Prahran opponent’s verbal dissent attracted a 50m penalty. Frank slotted the Hoers’ only goal from his set shot about 30m in front of goals at the Heidelberg Rd end and wildly celebrated with younger teammates. The occasion was especially notable as Frank was able to achieve a bucket-list moment playing alongside his son, Gerrard, 22; only the second time a father-son combination had ever played together in an Ivanhoe team.
VAFA Father-Daughter Umpiring Duo
Bruce and Amy Lister are one of two Father-Daughter VAFA Umpire duos. Having umpired several games together, they noted their similar styles of umpiring, and of building great rapport with players. Amy highlights that “a lot of my style is modelled off what I’ve learnt from [dad]”.
Bruno Savi and his daughter Charli are our other fatherdaughter combo at the VAFA.
The VAFA is very lucky to have a culture of inclusion where families can be involved and enjoy their time together; the Listers and the Savis are the pioneers, and we hope to see many more father-daughter combos in the future.
Women’s
Rising Star Nominee
Amelia Kogler (Old Melburnians)
The VAFA congratulates Amelia Kogler from Old Melburnians Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 11 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Amelia continues to shine for the Omelettes, delivering consistent performances week after week and has earned herself a spot in the best on many occasions.
What the club said:
Since coming down to pre-season training in December, Amelia or Mills as she is nicknamed has not missed a session. Mills is part of an impressive group of young women that have come from Merton Hall and made a huge impact on the club and is one of our first Father/daughters players with her old man Daniel being a former under 19s captain and senior player.
Whether it›s at the bottom of packs doing the hard stuff or applying 1st, 2nd and 3rd efforts, Mills is never one to shun hard work.
The nomination is a real credit to Mills dedication to game-day and training as she is always one of the last ones on the track doing extras. A really exciting future lies ahead for Mills in the Dark Blue!!!
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Kai Dimattina (Old Brighton)
The VAFA congratulates Kai Dimattina from Old Brighton Grammarians Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 11. Kai has been performing consistently and at a high level since his senior debut, with a standout performance from the weekend that earned him a spot in the best and a goal to top it off!
What the club said:
Kai joined Old Brighton in 2022 and was part of Old Brighton’s Under 19 side who made the Premier Division Grand Final.
He made his senior debut in Round 5 this season and has adapted to senior football really well, improving each game and consistently being amongst our better players over the last month.
Dimma has played an important role across half back and on the wing and was a standout in the win against Old Haileybury on the weekend. He uses the footy well, has a booming left boot and has a bright future in front of him.

One-by-One the Ants come marching in
Preston Bullants are starting to find their groove again. After losing the opening nine rounds of the season they’ve put together back-to-back performances that will fill them with confidence.
Reward for effort on the scoreboard, reward for effort on the ladder. Old Peninsula the latest to run into the inform Ants. It was a see-sawing affair through the opening three quarters, with scores level at the final change.
Preston were able to get the game on their terms, win the final quarter and now sit just one game behind West Brunswick in eighth spot.
Full credit to Pat Davies and Connor Howard, combining for seven goals from the Ants 12. Sean Calcedo & Nicholas De Andrade named amongst the best.
The Pirates have dropped their last three matches, falling from 5-3 to 5-6. They’ll be keen to arrest the slide this weekend, although they’ve got the toughest challenge in D1 Men’s awaiting them: Glen Eira.
For three of the four quarters, in a battle of the top four, Glen Eira only held an eight point lead over UHS-VU
The boys of Uni High gave the undefeated Gryphons a shake for much of the afternoon. The margin extended to 18 points at three quarter, most around the ground would have assumed the ladder leaders to run away with the points, but credit to the boys of Brens Oval, they came back at them to close within 8 points on the final siren.
In a quirk of the fixture, it was the first meeting of these two sides through 2023, they’ll meet again in Round 17 and potentially for a third time through September. UHS will take away plenty from this contest, and perhaps the same for the Gryphons too who have come up trumps for the 11th consecutive time this season.
With Oakleigh two games behind Glen Eira, the next fortnight for the Gryphons are at Packer Park. They have a chance to expand the gap and lock into top spot almost
a month out from the finals. UHS-VU hold a one game gap over Prahran in fourth. They’re on the road for the next fortnight before a run of five straight home games at the fortress to finish the season.
Oakleigh sits in between the Gryphons and UHS, they were 30 minutes away from falling short on the weekend to Kew before a nine goal final term saw them swing a 17 point deficit, into a 38 point victory.
Luke Ashen took the spoils in front of goal for the Krushers with six. Aaron Cloke, just the three. The season tally for Cloke moves to 42. Josh Hall and Harry Boontjes were instrumental in turning the fortunes of Oakleigh around.
Kew did everything right through the first three quarters, a five goal opening term, withstanding the pressure and opening up a 32 point lead at half-time. Lachlan James kicked four goals and was named Ian Aitken’s best player on the day.
They’ll feel disheartened to fall away as they did in the final term, it’s been a ring of fire the last month for the Bears, facing off to Glen Eira (1st), beating UHS-VU (3rd) and now challenging Oakleigh (2nd).
They’re around the mark, and can certainly trouble some sides in the final seven weeks of the season.
Prahran FC had a professional win over Ivanhoe AFC to keep themselves ahead of Therry Penola in the fourth spot.
The margin extended at each break from eight points, to 27, to 48 and finished at 64 points when the final siren rang.
Ethan Plaza (4 goals) and Shane Chapman (3 goals) did the damage on the scoreboard. Mackenzie Mayne and Jayden Williams did the damage with the ball in hand.
Without one of their runners and gunners, in Ethan Wild it was Nicholas Vines who produced two goals for Ivanhoe, and Harrison Bourke was named the best for Wayne Schultz’s side.
Next weekend is the battle of the black and white stripes at Ransford Oval. A repeat of the 2022 Division 2 Grand Final between Ivanhoe AFC and West Brunswick. Earlier this year, West Brunswick turned the tables in the season opener, can they repeat the dose?
Prahran FC will face Oakleigh in a top four battle, with the Lions clipping at their heels, it’s a game they can’t afford to drop.
Therry Penola are in the position they’re in off the back of a handy 66 point win over West Brunswick.
After kicking two goals in the opening term, the Magpies were held goalless after that as the Lions pulled away from them to bank another four points, and accumulate additional percentage.
Jack Pelosi, the sharpshooter in front of goal with four. Blake McKinnon was the best on the ground.
They’ve had an up and down 6 weeks of footy, the Lions, having lost games they probably should have won against sides below them.
UHS-VU pose a challenging threat, back at home this weekend. A scalp here throws the bottom rungs of the top four into chaos.
Just the way we like it.

Old Brighton retains their spot in the top four by percentage only, after going down to Marcellin OC by 25 points.
Marcellin secured the lead early but with only eight points the margin at three-quarter time, the game could have gone either way in the final quarter. However, it was the Sheagles who were able to flex their muscles, kicking three unanswered goals to continue Old Brighton’s losing streak.
Tess Menzies and Olivia Zuccala were deemed best-onground for Marcellin, both influential in their side’s victory. For Old Brighton, the biggest contributor was Cat O’Brien, who recently returned from a year out due to a knee injury.
After winning 7 of their first 8 matches, Old Brighton have now lost three in a row. The Tonners will need to find a solution to this mid-season slump quickly or risk a drop off similar to last season’s which saw them win 9 of their first 10 games, only to lose form in the lead up to finals where they went out in straight sets.
Old Geelong have jumped to third on the ladder with a thumping 53-point win over Hampton Rovers at Como Park. Old Geelong was dominant all day, able to hold the Rovers to a single goal without sacrificing any of their own attack.
The margin would have been even bigger if not for the standout performances of Rovers, Maegan Miller and Maxine Behnke, who did what they could to stop the onslaught from Old Geelong. Danielle Trott was phenomenal for the Ogettes, finishing the day with 4 goals, as were Brooke Mckay (1 goal) and Jessie Gleeson (2 goals).
Beaumaris have done it again, defeating Old Camberwell Grammarians by 47 points in the Grand Final rematch. Old Camberwell challenged Beaumaris in the first quarter, with the Sharks coming into the first break only a goal ahead, but from then on Beaumaris took charge, managing 7 more goals for the day while only allowing the Wellers to add one more major to their total.
Alexandra Herrington continued her stellar individual season for Old Camberwell, being named best on field, while Sara Fortunato also had a strong performance, kicking one of their two goals.
Holly Tysoe and Cassandra Newman led the charge for Beaumaris, with a spread of goal kickers helping them over the line. Simone Marinelli slotted two majors to become two goals clear of second in the goal-kicking tally.
After notching another strong win over a competitive side, it begs the question of whether Beaumaris can remain undefeated for a second consecutive season.
Old Haileybury bounced back from Round 10’s loss in a big way, beating Hawthorn AFC by an overwhelming margin of 96 points.
Hawthorn struggled all day, only registering three solitary behinds, against a relentless Old Haileybury side who ended the game just one point short of cracking the ton. The Hearts were particularly powerful in the third term, where they kicked 6.6 to set themselves up for the huge win.
The Haileybury forwards had a field day, with Serene Vudiniabola and Eloise Mccrae kicking four goals each, and Mccrae also being rewarded as best for her side. Mia Mathias and Tessa Bodin were best for Hawthorn.
Old Xaverians fear of relegation will be setting in after they lost to Old Meburnians in a low-scoring affair. Neither team managed to convert during the first half, with Old Melburnians leading the point-kicking by four at the main break, but the Omelettes came out firing in the third quarter to kick three unanswered goals. Old Xaverians had much of the play in the final term, but the Omelettes defence proved too strong, denying Old Xaverians of a goal.
Amy Benifer and Tahryn Mant fought hard for Old Xaverians, while Sophie Fraser kicked three goals in her 50 th game to earn the best-on-ground accolades for Old Melburnians.
Next round promises a host of exciting match ups with several evenly placed teams facing off.
Ever-dominant Beaumaris will draw a crowd when they host in-form Marcellin OC in what is sure to be a thrilling game. Are the Sheagles the side who can end the reign of the Sharks?
Another match to look forward to is between the two bottom placed sides, Hawthorn AFC and Old Xaverians. Old Xaverians will be desperate for a win to help secure their place in Division 1 next year, while Hawthorn AFC will be hoping to prey on the struggling Xavs side to get their first win in this division.
Next up, Old Haileybury will be looking to back up this week’s efforts when they travel to Castlefield Reserve to take on Hampton Rovers, who will be seeking revenge for the narrow loss they experienced last time the two sides met.
Guaranteed to be one of the matches of the round, all eyes will be on Holmes/Todd Oval when Old Melburnians host Old Brighton next Saturday. Old Brighton needs to break their losing spell or risk falling out of the top four, while Old Melburnians will be wanting to protect their spot in the top two.
The final match of the round will see Old Geelong travel to Gordon Barnard Reserve to do battle with Old Camberwell Grammarians. Old Geelong, who are on a six-game winning streak, will present another difficult challenge for Old Camberwell, who will be hoping to bounce back from this week’s painful loss.

Chaos at Garvey Oval between the Saints and the Raiders
Round 11 was an electric display of talent and heart, the top four teams are shaping up and the behemoths up top are fighting hard to stay afloat.
St Mary’s Salesian stormed to Garvey Oval to face off against the Old Paradians in a heart pumping match where both teams struggled to take the lead. The first half saw the Old Paradians struggling to capitalise on their opportunities which allowed the Saints to remain in the game.
In the third quarter both teams found their footing. David Huntley ran the soles of his boots, and with the help of Alexander Ouzas, gave opportunities for Struan Thomson (2 Goals) to dominate the game and reward himself handsomely for a ten-point lead at three quarter time.
The final quarter saw the Saints turn it up a notch and pull all tricks out of the bag. Jack Elliston continued his run of domination, while Joel Mattiske (1 Goal) put in another top performance. Barry McNally (2 Goals) and Lachlan Macneil (2 Goals) were able to convert their hard-earned toil on the scoreboard. After giving it their all, both teams had to settle for a draw.
The Parkside power over the 2023 season is no fluke. A full squad of undisputed talent put the nail in the coffin to the South Melbourne Districts at Lindsay Hassett Oval with a 22-point victory.
Although Parkside took a foothold over the Swans early, the South Melbourne Districts maintained a keen-eyed trail keeping within a kick until three quarter time. But it was the Devils in the driver’s seat the whole way home, kicking five in the fourth.
Michael Romano (1 Goal) led by example with another outstanding performance. Matthew Holden let the way which gave rise to Benjamin Radford (6 Goals) who carried the scoreboard on his own shoulders and is soaring high on the division’s goal kicking tally (48 Goals).
South Melbourne Districts put up a good fight for the top four clash, but the Devils were just too good once again. Overall, the Devils have set the tone for Men’s Division 2, and some would even say are finals favourites.
The Old Yarra Cobras faced off against the Whitefriars in a thrilling game of footy on Saturday. The first quarter saw both teams struggling to find their footing, however the Cobras were just able to extend the lead into halftime.
It was the Cobras dynasty that controlled the pace of the game in the second half once they ironed out their mistakes to make way for clean footy. Nick Zappala and Elliot Brandon Jones played the game on their terms and were key to their Cobra win. Chris Docker ripped up the midfield and backline with the help of Adam Baltruweit and James Bell. Jack Hall (3 Goals) converted to the scoreboard in convincing fashion in tandem with Anthony Raso (3 Goals) to bring the 31-point lead home.
The Cobras demonstrate time and time again their adaptability and flair, especially against as tough of an opposition as the Friars and their goal magnet forward line.
Up and up, the Brunswick bandits have their chins high and rightly so after a 79-point domination over Aquinas From the first siren to the last the Brunswick boys would not let their foot off the gas for even a second.
Backman Harris Mitter (2 Goals) put in his best performance all season after pushing up to the midfield. He was clean around the footy and added to the Brunswick barricade as solid as a rock in defence. The chemistry between Ben Wilson and Gus Ross resulted in a domination in the centre and was well serviced by Archie Fulton-Grigg who stepped up to the ruck and passed with flying colours.
Matt Horan and Aiden Pollock (1 Goal) placed much pressure up forward for big guns Gus Coverdale (3 Goals) and Hayden Parker (4 Goals) who took advantage of his athleticism and crashed a few packs.
The Brunswick squad bounced back from a tough loss in round 10 and proved they are still a force to be reckon with. Brunswick now head to Ferndale Park to face St Mary’s Salesian, whilst Aquinas come up against South Melbourne Districts.
It’s clear the Unicorns aren’t holding anything back and are striving for that top four spot. MHSOB started of early with a short lead in the first and were unstoppable in the second, leaving Bulleen Templestowe with their heads spinning.
Jamie Radcliffe-Smith (1 Goal) demolished Woodfull-Miller Oval along with Julian Eimutis (1 Goal). Big Matty Pereira (5 Goals) struck gold up forward outpacing and out-marking the competition with another exciting performance along with William Hellier (3 Goals) and Alexander Mourtikas (3 Goals).
The Bulleen Temp clawed back kicking five in the third, but the Unicorns shifted to another gear in the fourth to break the century mark and storm home with a 41 point victory.

Ladder leaders continue to dominate the competition
Round 11 saw the league’s first and second placed ladder leaders continue to dominate the competition, while MCC claimed an exciting victory against Ivanhoe as the teams faced off for the second time this season.
Therry Penola faced off against St Mary’s Salesian at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. In what was a low scoring game, the first half saw both teams play with strong defensive pressure. St Mary’s managed to keep Therry scoreless going into the second quarter but were only able to score seven points against the Lions tough defence.
Ruby Gazzo kicked Therry Penola’s only goal of the game to close the margin, however St Mary’s continued to slowly extend their lead throughout the day. Anna Vrsecky and Penelope Heath kicked a goal each for St Mary’s, with the teams five other shots at goal only going through for minor scores, yet it was enough to secure the win. Rebecca Kennedy was best on for St Mary’s, while Gemma Macgregor was best on for Therry Penola.
MCC took on Ivanhoe at Beaumaris Secondary College in a Round 3 rematch. Having lost to Ivanhoe by 60 points earlier in the season, MCC showcased their development as a team with a 60 point win this time around.
Dominating right from the get-go, MCC showed no signs of releasing the pressure as they extended their lead throughout the game. Finishing with a total of 12 majors, MCC star, Anna-Lisa Harris, put on a clinic kicking five goals. Estelle Ashkar and Athena Asmanis both kicked two, while Ellecia Baker, Hollie Brodribb and Summer Wolchyn all kicked one each. MCC’s Summer Wolchyn got the best on votes for her efforts, while Talya Callahan was best on for Ivanhoe.
Over at Fearon Reserve, Williamstown hosted Old Trinity in what was an exciting afternoon showdown. Coming up against the powerful and undefeated Williamstown side, Old Trinity was in for a big day.
A strong first half effort from both sides saw an even match up of skill and defensive pressure. Williamstown managed to kick 3.3 to Old Trinity’s 2.2.
Going into the second half only seven points up, it was looking as through Williamstown had met their match, but the highly skilled side took their game to the next level and extended their lead to 33 points by full time. Anais Lipski kicked three goals for Williamstown, Alessia Acquaro kicked two and Hannah Elliot and Kiara Palmar both kicked one each. Bella Eames kicked one goal for Old Trinity as did Meghan Walker.
In a huge match up, Albert Park took on the Parkdale Vultures in what may have been a glimpse into finals for this season. With Albert Park currently sitting in second place and Parkdale in third, this game showcased what these top sides have been building on throughout the season.

Having played off in Round 4 with Albert Park just coming out on top, the Vultures were looking to redeem themselves with a victory. However, it was not to be as Albert Park dominated the game and ran away with a 64-point win.
While the convincing victory was the product of all 23 players putting in their best, Albert Park shared the goal kicking glory amongst many, with Johannah Griffin and Eliza Shalders kicking three each, Hannah Burr kicking two and Sarah Kenny, Abby Battersby and Helen Lawrence all kicking one each. Chole Mcdonald was best on for Albert Park and Breanna Allen was best on for Parkdale. The win for Albert Park is their third in a row, while Parkdale have had their two-game winning streak cut short.

The top of the table settles itself as it now comes down to who will get the second chance
With round 11 in the books, the top four in Division 3 seems all but sewn up, but as we enter the conclusive stages of the season, it becomes a question of where they will finish. This round saw a trio of big games and a barrage of goals, with three teams soaring past the 100-point barrier.
First up was the in-form Canterbury Cobras, as they faced off against one of the more versatile outfits in the competition, Wattle Park. At the Animals’ home ground, the Cobras looked to establish their authority early, building a handy lead in the opening half thanks to the efforts of Mitch Szabo and Harry Cutter, while Jayden Cutts steadied the ship in the forward line.
The second half of the game was scrappy, tough, and nearly impossible to score in, as lock-down defense and bruising tackles became the theme of the afternoon. Wattle Park’s Joden Crothers did everything he could to rally the home side, bringing them within reach heading into the final quarter.
In the end, the scrappy affair belonged to the Cobras, who bounced back after three huge weeks. Importantly, they achieved this without their leagueleading goal scorer, Thomas Lowden, registering a major. This is a testament to the work rate of the Animals and the game plan of the Cobras, still able to win without their main target scoring.
Next at the top of the table, Hawthorn took on Richmond Central. Both teams were coming off great wins in round 10, and confidence was high with momentum swinging. For the Hawks, it was a good opportunity to go hard and potentially boost their percentage to secure a top-two spot for a double chance at the end of the season. For Richmond, it was a great chance to cause a major upset and disrupt the season.
Both sides displayed their best in doing the grunt work, with Justin Raiti (6), Jack Kenny (3), and Jason Cowland (2) capitalizing on their opportunities. Meanwhile, Jake Dillon was a thorn in the side of Hawthorn defenders, scoring 3 majors on a tough afternoon.
In the end, the Hawks managed to keep their foot on the accelerator and finished as 61-point winners against an admirable Richmond side. Richmond now faces a hard-to-read La Trobe in the next weekend’s fixture.
Speaking of La Trobe University, they faced a formidable Power House in Round 11 and were aiming to find some consistency in their gameplay against a side that regularly displays finals potential.
At Ross Gregory Oval on a cold Saturday afternoon, Power House wasted no time in feeding Matt Auchetti, who managed to snag 6 majors by the end of the game. He benefited from Harry Officer and his fleet of men around him, who picked up what he couldn’t bring down. The game, for the most part, was never close on the scoreboard. However, La Trobe dug deep through the efforts of Patrick Lindsay and Adrian Marulli to see the game through.
The final game of the round showcased top-ofthe-table Elsternwick, who came out to make a statement, scoring a staggering 12 goals and 4 behinds in the opening term to set the standard for the rest of the game against Swinburne. Elsternwick launched an all-out attack against the University side, limiting them to just one goal in the first half while almost reaching 100 points themselves.

Julian Yeatman seemed to have the ball on a string up forward, scoring 8 majors, while Andrew Olsen had a dominant performance, catching a serious case of leather poisoning. He was awarded the best-on-ground accolade. Swinburne, led by Tyson Wiegold and his supporting cast, fought valiantly but ultimately fell to the top-of-the-table team by a margin of 167 points, resulting in a significant percentage boost for Elsternwick heading into the second half of the year.
Round 12 presents a weekend finally not highlighted by a tough Cobras matchup. Instead, it will be a showdown of the suburbs as Wattle Park takes on Hawthorn, providing a great test for these two top-four powerhouses.

St Johns Win in a Thriller as Demons Reach New Heights
The first match of the round saw Eley Park take on Box Hill North in a very high-scoring match. Despite the wet ground, the first quarter saw both teams make their impact on the scoreboard early with 10 goals kicked for the first quarter (7 for the Demons and 3 for the Sharks). It was the Demons that held a 20-point lead heading into the first break. In the second quarter, the Demons wiped out chances of an upset with a whopping 11 goals for the quarter, extending their lead to 93 points in the process.
The conditions of the ground then came into effect as both teams slowed right down when it came to their attacking play. However, the Demons were once again able to win the quarter, kicking 5 goals to a single Sharks goal, extending the Demons’ lead out to 123 points with a quarter to play. The final quarter saw the speed of the game pick back up as both teams were able to hit the scoreboard. The Demons were able to capitalise on their opportunities kicking 6 goals from 10 scoring shots whilst the Sharks were only able to kick 2 goals from 8 scoring shots. In the end, it was the Demons that pulled out one of the biggest wins of the season with a 144-point victory over the Sharks. Despite the loss, Eley Park had their second-most scoring shots this season during the match, a positive for the club.
Goal scorers for the Sharks were Bailey Bowyer (2), Andrew Kerr (2), Riley Lockett (1) and Shannon Blewitt (1). The Demons had 12 different goalkickers with the biggest goalkickers being Jack Dullard (6), Blake Williams (5), Rowan Lawrence (3) and Joshua Chivers (3). Among the best for the Sharks were Jacob Rose, Terrence Dingeldei and Zachary Hayes. The best for the Demons were Joshua Hocking, Joshua Chivers and Jack Dullard. Eley Park will now take on St Johns who are coming off a big win. Box Hill North will make the trip down to Albert Park to take on the Falcons in what should be a good contest.
The second match of the round saw Masala host rivals St Johns in one of the best matches we’ve seen this season. Both teams started off incredibly even with neither team giving the other any breathing room when in possession of the ball. Masala though was able to gain a narrow 1-point lead with after a quarter of play. The second quarter was again another even quarter, however, the JOCs were able to kick an extra goal which saw them gain an 8-point lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw St Johns able to capitalise in front of goals with 4 goals to Masala’s 2, inaccuracy costing them in the quarter. The JOCs were able to extend their lead to 17 points with a final quarter to play. The fourth quarter saw Masala fight back kicking 3 unanswered goals, and even taking the lead at a point. The JOCs however, were able to steal the game back with a goal with 5 minutes to go to make it difficult for the Tigers, followed by a goal after the siren. Despite winning the quarter, the Tigers were not able to win the game with St Johns winning their biggest game of the year by 14 points.
Multiple goalkickers for the Tigers were Tom Williamson (2), Sean Downes (2) and Zac Pahos (2). For the JOCs, Kailum Newland dominated in front of goal with 6 majors. Other multiple-goal scorers for the JOCs include Nicholas Terrill (2) and Jayke Tuplin (2). In the best for Masala was 100th game player, Brandon Kelly, Dave Velardo and Maurice Mills-Rolfe. In the best for the JOCs were Kailum Newland, Corey Ely and Daniel Cattolico. Masala will now face the undefeated North Brunswick whilst St Johns will look to ride this wave of momentum as they host Eley Park.
The final match of the round saw Albert Park looking to build on their momentum as they faced the undefeated North Brunswick. The Bulls were able to get the jump on the Falcons early with a 4-goal to 1 quarter, ending the quarter with a 25-point lead. The second quarter saw the Bulls build on their efforts with a 3-goal to 1 quarter, extending their lead out to 39 points with a half of football to play.
The Bulls ran away with the match in the third, kicking a dominant 9 goals to the Falcons 2, extending their lead out to 83 points. By the final quarter both teams were gassed, with only 1 goal scored. In the end, it was the Bulls that were able to add another major victory to their season resumé with a 90-point win over the Falcons, their third largest win of the season.
Goal kickers for the Falcons included Sam Lee (2), Christopher Marson (1) and Reece French-Lightfoot (1). The Bulls had 12 individual goalkickers with multiple goalkickers including Nicholas Watson (4) and Jake Horwood (2). Amongst the best for the Bulls were Simon Woodward, Tai Cameron Sardone and Zac Dicianni. The Falcons will face another tough opponent as they face Box Hill North at home. The Bulls will make the trip to North Dandenong to take on Masala, a team that has been competitive with them at times this season.

MILESTONES
Sam Bradford (South Melbourne Districts)
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Bubbles joined the bloods after transitioning from his rugby roots following a move from Tathra and he was bursting with talent. He had an immediate impact with the bloods and achieved the honour of representing the VAFA U18’s in 2012. Now in his second stint at the club, he’s become again a key part of the group on and off the field. It’s great to have you back Bubbles, congratulations on 50 games! 50
150
Jimmy Raine (South Melbourne Districts)
Arriving as a young man, fresh out of Maffra, Jimmy ‘Tree’ Raine seamlessly integrated in the club and the bloods culture as a loveable character you couldn’t help but to get around. A two-time ressies flag winner in 2019 (Div 4) and 2022 (Div 3), Jimmy is not one to back down from a contest and always there to stick up for his mates #Justice4Jimmy. Known for his craft as a lanky ruck man, with his taps being delivered on time, every time. A favourite amongst his teammates and the broader club, congratulations on 50 games big fella.
Kevin Tutty (South Melbourne Districts)
Congratulations Kevin Tutty, South Melbourne’s ‘Irish King’ and a club legend! Affectionately known as “Puddin Guts”, legend has it that Kev wasn’t in fact recruited but that he recruited himself! Upon meeting with Tony Pilimon, he insisted that Aussie Rules Legend Peter Bedford be assigned the task of helping him hone his skills. And hone his skills he did… as Anthony “Quony” Quon stated, “Kev was great, hard at it.” Anyone who has played with him over the journey would attest to the fact that Kev would put his head where many a man wouldn’t put his foot! Amanda, Abbie and everyone connected to the club are hugely proud of your achievement and the success you’ve brought to the club! Go well Kev, kick a few snags, get the chocolates and enjoy your 150th outing – your day mate!
Asha Price (MUWFC)
Asha ‘Pricey’ Price plays game 150 this weekend for MUWFC.
Congratulations Pricey!

Chris Young (Old Camberwell Grammarians)
150
This week we celebrate Chris “Jaw” Young’s 150 th game for the Mighty Wellers. Chris joined the Club from Greythorn Juniors in 2011, playing for our Under 19s and he made his way into the Senior XV111 in 2013, his first season of open age footy. A tough, uncompromising Inside Mid, with a lethal left foot, especially when making his way through traffic at Centre Bounces. He is highly regarded and respected by his teammates through his willingness to share the footy around when going forward, and by his Coaches, securing two Reserves Best & Fairest awards, 2019 & 2021. He continues to play, in the quest for a Grand Final win, having missed several times over the journey, 2013, 2014 and 2022. One of the few players at the Club with a young family and an ever-developing career, Chris still finds time to pull the jumper on each week and for that we are ever so grateful. Go well Youngy, we are all most proud to be in your presence around the Club and on the footy field.
