SEASON 2024 - July 13
Big V weekend a raging success
Big V weekend 2024 encapsulated everything that’s great about the VAFA and representative footy. It kicked off on Friday afternoon with a record-breaking crowd of 350 guests packing the RACV Club to celebrate Big V greats of the past and present.
Andy Cultrera and Micah Berry were worthy Big V Champion inductees, while Nick Bourke took his well-earned place as our sixteenth Big V Legend.
It was wonderful to have the Big V Reunion teams from 1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004 in the room, with history made as we celebrated our first-ever 60-year reunion with several members from the Carnival-winning 1964 team joining them.
Our three 2024 Big V teams were presented with their valued Big V jumpers as the greats of the past gave them a raucous ovation. And that warm reception was referenced by all three coaches in their matchday addresses across the weekend, with “We learned what it means to pull on this very special jumper” a common refrain over the weekend.
The action kicked off with a celebration of the VAFA’s rising young stars as the Holmesglen Under 19 Showcase saw South host North (with the Monash Freeway & Geelong Freeway the dividing lines). It was a fantastic contest, with South ultimately pulling away in the final quarter. Congratulations to Old Haileybury’s Andreas Stefanakis, who was named best afield for his 4-goal performance.

Then Sunday saw the Big V Men & Women cross the Nullarbor and head to Steel Blue Oval in Bassendean to face the Perth Football League in what turned out to be wet and windy conditions.
The Women were first up and had to fight tooth and nail to get on top, and they looked to have broken the game open when they led by 13 points with 5 minutes to play. But up stepped ex-AFLW forward Ash Sharp, who booted 2 goals in 2 minutes to reduce the margin to a point.
The Big V maintained their composure superbly and locked the ball in their front half to see out the clock for a thrilling 1-point win. Kew’s Dakota Villiva was magnificent all afternoon for the Vics.
“We learned what it means to pull on this very special jumper”
Then it was the Big V Men’s turn and unfortunately, they didn’t handle the tricky conditions as well as Perth and their wasteful disposal and conversion ultimately cost them a shot at victory. Perth did a great job of spreading the ground wide when in possession, then shrinking it down to congest the Vics when the Big V had the ball.
In the end, it came down to the Sandgropers’ forwards taking their chances as they posted a well-deserved 23-point win. Old Brighton’s Will Lewis was named best afield for the Vics.
Part 2 of our Elsternwick Park double-header saw the VAFA Big V Premier B-Division 3 side host the Bendigo FNL and this also turned out to be a great game. The Big V held the scoreboard advantage for most of the afternoon, but the visitors refused to give up and fought all the way to the final siren – the VAFA posting a tense 13-point win. Old Trinity’s Alex Emery named best afield for his standout four-quarter midfield performance.
All in all, a wonderful reminder of just how much representative football means to so many people. It’s always special to see young talent on display as we saw in the Showcase and then to see that mighty Big V running around is enough to give any Victorian footy fan goosebumps.
Best of luck to all clubs as they now re-focus on the run home to September!

Roys roll rival in relegation race
The fight for survival in Premier Men’s went up a notch entering the double bye.
Fitzroy breathed life into their campaign by defeating rival St Bernards at Brunswick Street Oval.
It was the sixth meeting between the two in the past two seasons, with the Snowdogs having won the previous five (including the 2023 Premier B Grand Final).
This was another thriller from the outset, with just one goal apiece in the opening term.
The Roys seized the initiative with 3 unanswered goals to lead by 16 points at the main break, before the Snowdogs fought their way back to tie things up at the final change.
The last quarter was a nailbiter – St Bernards with 3 behinds before the Roys kicked a couple of time-on goals to claim an emotional 10-point win that revives their hopes of clearing the drop zone by season’s end.
Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “Really proud of our performance, especially the way we finished off the game under immense pressure. It’s great reward for the group who have been putting in a huge amount of work at training. The improvement and progress we have made is especially pleasing.”
Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “A fantastic contest by both teams in difficult conditions. Fitzroy’s willingness to compete all day was a credit to them and an important factor in the result.
Our grit in that third quarter to claw our way back into the contest was encouraging but ultimately inaccurate kicking in front of goal cost us.”
St Kevin’s celebrated their premiership reunions with a comprehensive 56-point win over Collegians at St Kevin’s College.
The Lions went two players down early, with Will Mayhood also hampered by an ankle injury. But injuries aside, SKOB were just too good from the outset, seizing control to lead by 32 points at the first change.
Collegians booted 4 goals to 2 in the second term as the half-time margin shrunk to 20 points.
But the third quarter was a masterclass of wet-weather football as the home team slammed on 6.5 to 1.1 and ultimately cruise to their sixth straight win as they firm as the #1 Contender to Old Brighton’s premiership favouritism.
Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “Foundation Day back at the college is a really important day in our club’s annual fixture and our boys were keen to perform for our community and past players.
I was proud of the performance against quality opposition - really even as a group which is generally when we’re at our best.
Collegians really challenged us in the 2nd quarter. We addressed this strongly at half-time and thought our players’ response in the 3rd quarter was emphatic.”
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “We started poorly and St Kevin’s capitalised. They were able to move through our team defence with relative ease.
Our second quarter was pleasing when we were able to get on top around the footy and move the ball quickly. The boys kept trying until the end, but ultimately St Kevin’s were deserving comfortable victors.”
Old Scotch came from behind to post their fourth straight win over a much-improved University Blacks at Scotch College.
Blacks led by 7 points at quarter time, before the inaccurate Cardinals edged in front at the half.
Blacks seized control in the third, booting 4 goals in the first 14 minutes to kick away to a 20-point lead before Old Scotch responded to reduce the deficit to 7 points at the last break.
The Cardinals hit the front via a Cooper Lean goal at the 13-minute mark of the final term, before goals to Connor Goodison and Will Clark sealed a hard-fought win on a special day at the College.
It was a significantly better performance from Blacks after a couple of heavy losses, but their sixth loss in seven weeks has them delicately poised just 2.5% above the drop zone at the double bye.
Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “It was a tough contested game of footy, which is exactly what we expected. Blacks are known for their contested game style and our ability to be +32 in this space and get our hands first on the footy was most pleasing.
“Our boys showed great resilience from late in the 3rd to grind out a gutsy victory with the last 5 goals of the game.”
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “I was proud of how our guys played and how they fought the game out. Our leaders were fantastic.”
Old Xaverians returned to the winners’ list in fine style with a thumping 12-goal win over Old Melburnians at Elsternwick Park.
OMs had the first 3 scoring shots of the game before Xavs found some rhythm to build a 19-point lead at the break.
Xavs then consolidated with the only 3 goals of the second term to push out to a 38-point buffer at the half.
Another 3 unanswered goals in the third term extended the margin to 57 points at the last change – Xavs continuing their trend of dominating the teams below them as they powered away to a percentage-boosting 73-point win that saw them leapfrog Collegians & Uni Blues into the Top 4.
The heavy loss saw OMs slip back into the relegation zone, behind Uni Blacks on percentage. They face the Top 2 teams after the double bye, then crunch games against the Blacks & Roys that could determine their fate.
Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “We managed to gain the ascendency at the contest and that was the difference throughout the day. It was fantastic to see the younger boys step up in tough conditions, Ben Bilston-McGillen, Sterling Phipps-Parsons and young Xavier Austin on debut were all fantastic.”
Paul Satterley (OMs): “Xavs proved way too good for us for the entire game. We needed to finish our work a lot better and our inability to apply any scoreboard pressure built up over the quarters resulting in a very disappointing performance from us.”
The final match of the round saw Old Brighton take control of University Blues after half time at Melbourne University Oval.
The Tonners booted 4 of the first 5 goals and threatened to blow the game out.
But credit to Blues, who dug in and kicked the only 4 goals scored between time-on in the first term and half time to turn their 14-point quarter time deficit into a 3-point half time lead.
Old Brighton found another gear to kick the first 4 goals of the third quarter and re-establish a handy break before 3 goals to Sam Grimley gave the home team hope of an upset.
However, the Tonners steadied to ultimately run out 32-point winners and maintain their one game lead at the top, while the Blues have slipped to sixth, behind Xavs and Collegians on percentage at 6-5.
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Really proud of the team, particularly when challenged strongly. Our mids made adjustments and were able to break even or win at stoppage and the forwards competed really hard all day.
“Backs were super, in particular Elliott Avis, who took on the challenge of Sam Grimley and did a great job, whilst the group were lifted through the second half by an exceptional Harry Hill.”
Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “A tough, physical and pretty even contest for most of the game but as the game went on, Old Brighton just got on top in some critical moments/contests.
“Probably the reason why they’re 10-1 and sitting atop the ladder.”

Top four unyielding in William Buck Premier Women’s
Round 11 saw wild and woolly conditions across the competition, with teams putting everything on the line before the representative football bye weekend.
It was a low scoring affair at Scotch College where Old Scotch took home the chocolates, defeating Kew by 10 points.
With both sides struggling to control the slippery Sherrin, the only score of the first half went to Old Scotch when Millie Fraser-Smith converted truly after being paid a free kick.
Kew won the territory battle in the third term, however, were wasteful with their opportunities, only registering two behinds. It became another see-sawing affair in the final term, but when Mia Cowan kicked the second major of the day halfway through the quarter, it was enough to seal the game for Old Scotch.
In trying conditions, Zoe Carter received the coach’s plaudits for Old Scotch, while Georgia Wyett was best for Kew.
At Righetti Oval, St Kevin’s got the better of a slowstarting Caulfield Grammarians outfit, reinforcing their position at the top of the table.
The wet conditions were no issue for the well-oiled Saints, who locked the ball in their forward line for the first half to take a comfortable 37-point lead into the main break.
Sarah Cameron kicked two goals in the first two minutes of the third term to extend the margin to a whopping 49 points. Credit to the Grammarians, they refused to give up, kicking the next five goals to bring the final scores to 56-32.
Midfield bull Jessica Joyce led the way for St Kevin’s, while Sarah Cameron was also instrumental, kicking four goals to take back top spot in the league goalkicking tally. Tessa Boyd also made a welcome return to the Saints’ lineup in her first VAFA game of the year.
For Caulfield, Chloe O’Malley and India Lehman battled hard in defence all day to put the brakes on St Kevin’s attack.
Coburg hosted West Brunswick, with only one win separating the two teams on the ladder coming into the day. Reflective of their tight position on the ladder, the two sides could hardly be separated for much of the game.
The first term didn’t see either side kick a goal, despite both teams having periods where the ball was locked deep inside forward 50.
Mia Amon kicked the opening goal following a free kick in the pocket, sneaking home a brilliant shot to have the visitors full of confidence, going into the main break with a 10-point lead. However, Coburg emerged from the rooms determined to attack and give themselves every opportunity to win.
Stephanie Filbay kicked her fifth goal of the season after a strong contested mark, setting up a thrilling final term, as West Brunswick led by a solitary point.
Some strong bodywork by Melissa Lindsay saw her grab the ball out of the ruck and dribble home a goal, allowing West Brunswick a bit of breathing space again before Brighdin Walsh and Matilda Hammond iced the game in the dying minutes to record a 21-point win for the Magpies.
Taylah Watson was the best player on the ground in her 100th game, making it her 10th selection in the best players for West Brunswick this season.
While Coburg will see this game as one that got away from them, Dacia Abela’s strong performance was a consolation for the disappointing end result.
Collegians travelled to face Old Yarra Cobras with three debutants in Judie Goldman, Lara Brown and Jess Thomas pulling on the purple jumper for the first time. It was an exciting day for the club, with all three players making strong contributions in a resounding 42-point victory.
An inaccurate first term saw Collegians register 2.3 (15) to just one behind for the Cobras, who found themselves unable to adapt to the tough conditions throughout the day. The second and third quarters proved difficult for both sides, however, Collegians managed to add a further two goals in that period before another two in the final term put the nail in the coffin.
The result leaves the Cobras sitting in 8th position with a win-loss record of 3-8, putting them at risk of dropping into the relegation zone, while Collegians have moved 6 points clear of Caulfield to sit comfortably in 4th place with a 7-4 record.
Melbourne University put together their strongest performance of the year, beating Monash Blues by 48 points.
The Mugars got off to the perfect start, kicking four straight goals in the first term while not allowing Monash any real look in. They continued to dominate in the second, extending the margin to 37 points by the main break.
Monash managed to tighten things up a little in the second half, however, they couldn’t find a way to reduce the deficit, as Melbourne University put in a four-quarter effort to notch their second win of the season.
It was a team performance by Melbourne University, who had three multiple goalkickers in Madison Katerelos, Lucy Watkin and Angelena Roan, while Brooke Randall made her case to be selected in the final Big V team with another best-onground performance.
For Monash, Natasha Newman and Caitlin Williams earned the recognition of their coach for putting together their best games of the season.
With 7 rounds to play for when we return from the two-week bye, each result will begin to mean even more.
Collegians and Caulfield Grammarians will face off in a door-die match for Caulfield, who will need to win this if they want to take Collegians’ spot in the top four. Coburg will have a great opportunity to rest and reflect over the bye to prepare for a difficult post-bye encounter with Old Scotch. West Brunswick will look to build upon their recent form when they match up with Monash Blues, who have been struggling this year with just the one win so far. Melbourne University have shown their competitiveness against the top sides but will need to bring their A-game if they want to challenge top-placed St Kevin’s. Finally, Old Yarra will host Kew with the Cobras needing to make some drastic improvements if they wish to stay in the William Buck Premier competition next year.

Tigers triumph, finals race tightens
The double-bye is upon Premier B football, and it’s Daniel Ward’s Old Haileybury that has rocketed to the break with a ninth consecutive win, saluting in a one-v-two contest with Old Trinity. The Bloods are two games clear in first spot on the ladder - a brilliant turnaround from the 18-point loss to the T’s and a 43-point humbling at the hands of Beaumaris that kicked off their 2024 campaign.
In wet, windy conditions at Daley Oval, the Bloods held the Ts to just one goal in the first term, before kicking three goals to none in the second to go into the long break with a 22-point advantage. Donald McDonald’s side worked back into the contest to trail by just seven points with a few minutes left in the third, but the Bloods wrestled back control with the wind and finished with a flurry, piling on six goals in the last quarter to win 12.8 (80) to 6.6 (42).
After poor kicking and a stingy Sharks defence kept his side to their equal-second lowest score of the season in Round 10, Ward said he was pleased with his team’s ability to apply scoreboard pressure, despite the unfavourable conditions. A sore Durras Seccull was selfless and competed strongly in the air, responding to a goalless outing against Beaumaris with two majors, while livewire Andreas Stefanakis continued his mighty year with another three goals. Blood Josh Gasparini (30 disposals, 16 clearances) continued his magnificent form, while Nick Hodgson (31 disposals, 20 contested possessions) was manful for the Ts.
Second-placed De La Salle, the team considered to have the best chance of knocking off the Bloods by some around the competition, have won its last two contests by a combined total of 149 points - this time accounting easily for an undermanned Beaumaris at Banksia Reserve.
The 86-point victory, when combined with an average losing margin of 5.75 points (the heaviest De La loss being by just 10 points at the hands of Old Geelong) means that De La boast to a percentage of 138.28%, some 13.5% clear of third-placed Old Trinity. The percentage column of this year’s ladder promises to be the deciding feature in the second phase of the season, with five clubs from second down to sixth sitting at a 7-4 record.
“We’ve been in every single contest - we pride ourselves on being really competitive,” De La Salle coach Nick Hyland said. The 17.11 (113) to 3.9 (27) win allowed De La to trial some positional adjustments, with Campbell Bedford, Fraser Cameron and Lachie Gawel in fine form.
For Sharks coach Josh Bourke, it’s been a difficult three weeks, with an overwhelming number of first-choice players unavailable for selection. Graduates from the Sharks’ Under 19s team, Petar Pecer and Nate Dear, have impressed Bourke, as have current Under 19s pair Spencer McLennan and James Pepper.
Meanwhile defender Cal Linehan, who will line up in the Big V Prem B-Div 3 team this weekend at Elsternwick Park, has also enjoyed a stellar season. “The level of his performance at the minute - he really is capable of playing at another level,” Bourke said. “He’s fought his guts out to keep us in games at times.”
With spaces in the top four considerably difficult to nail down, Old Geelong secured a crucial four points on the road, turning around a 23-point deficit at the ten-minute mark of the final quarter to defeat Old Ivanhoe in a thriller.
Dominant Hoers midfielder Billy Murphy, remarkable on the day with 35 disposals, nine clearances and three goals, won a holding-the-man free kick in the dying seconds deep inside the Old Ivanhoe forward line.
His game-deciding drop punt clipped the outside of the goalpost as the final siren sounded in heartbreak for Old Ivanhoe. OG’s coach Nathan Brown was thrilled with the result, which looked unlikely in difficult conditions at Chelsworth Park. “Four goals down in the wet, away from home, against a quality opposition - it was looking like a win for Old Ivanhoe, one they deserved, too.”
At three-quarter-time, having kicked just two goals to the final break, Brown had implored his squad to lift with a well-earned rest to follow the next 30-odd minutes of football. The OGs came out firing in the last, dominating the disposal and inside 50 counts, with goals from Sam Barnett, Connor Dixon and Tom Furphy drawing the visitors within a kick.
A Nick Morwood goal put the OGs in front, but from the centre bounce the Hoers thrust the ball deep inside their forward 50, where Murphy would win the opportunity to effectively kick for the game. His miss sealed a 6.13 (49) to 6.11 (47) win for Old Geelong, which now sits fourth on the ladder, nearly 5% clear of Old Ivanhoe in fifth.
Hoers coach Jarrod Gieschen emphasised the need for Premier B teams to make the most of their good work in a season where ten-minute bursts have often proved the difference between squads. “When you’ve got the momentum, you’ve got to capitalise,” he said.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers was the story of Round 11, the Tigers finally breaking through for their first win of the 2024 season after coming desperately close over the last month. After suffering defeats by under a goal in Round 8 and Round 9, Brad Berry’s side was impressive across three quarters against Old Trinity before the Ts put their foot down after the final break.
“We looked at our measurements, our improvement markers, they were all there,” said Berry of the Round 10 game, which set the Tigers up nicely for a meeting with the Caulfield Grammarians
And indeed, St Bedes/Mentone arguably had the game won at three-quarter-time at Glen Huntly Park on the weekend, leading by 35 points at the turn for home. Despite a late Grammarians push, Berry’s young squad was able to shake off the jitters of being in a rare winning position, waving farewell to a difficult first phase of the season with a 12.12 (84) to 10.9 (69) win.
Lachie Palfrey, an anchor for the St Bedes/Mentone defence, combined well with “ultra-consistent” defender Zac Calvez, while wingman Max Sullivan played his best game of the season.
Jack Behnk (17 disposals, three goals), an Anytime Fitness Rising Star nominee in Round 1, has had an outstanding season for the Tigers - and Berry thinks he’s able to mix it at a higher level. “Jack’s effort has always been there, but all of a sudden he’s getting on the end of a few because we’re getting the ball through the way we’ve been training (for),” he said.
The smooth-moving Darcy Fountain (26 disposals, two goals) scopes as a midfield option for the Tigers in future, while the around-the-ground work of Category B Melbourne rookie Kyah Farris-White impressed his coach.
For Guy McKenna’s Grammarians, it was an opportunity to celebrate stalwart Dom O’Keefe’s 200th game for the club. “35 years of age, 17 years of service to the club, it’s fantastic,” McKenna said.
Finally, Old Camberwell ensured it kept pace with the glut of sides on seven wins, opening up a gap on Williamstown CYMS with a four-goals-to-none second term, eventually securing a 11.10 (76) to 7.9 (51) victory.
Old Camberwell’s Harrison Veitch (26 disposals, 20 contested possessions) and James Allen (26 disposals, 8 marks) showed their class, as the CYs were left to rue a slow start. Ultimately, a near five-goal margin at three quarter time was too much to haul in for the home side, Old Camberwell off to the bye with a handy win under its belt.
“(Old Camberwell) have forwards that go under the radar - they are fundamentally really sound, constantly in front, constantly presenting, able to read the ball in the air,” Terzoglou said.
Jordan Busuttil (30 disposals, 20 contested possessions) and Liam Conway (27 disposals) continued their strong seasons for the CYs.
An enticing second phase of the season looms when the season resumes on July 20.

Old Geelong edges Fitzroy by one point in nail-biter
Round 11 of the Premier B Women’s competition featured strong performances in a number of closely contested games. As the season progresses, the fight for finals positions intensifies, making every game important from here on out. This round continued to shape the season, with each match playing a significant role in the standings.
Beaumaris bounced back in style with a 58-14 victory over Aquinas OC. From the first bounce, Beaumaris showed their intent, playing with a level of intensity and precision that Aquinas struggled to match.
The Beaumaris forward line was particularly compelling, with their ability to create goalscoring opportunities inside their offensive 50. Ella Southgate finished the game with 3 goals and a spot in the best three, alongside Samantha Baisas and Ruby Raymondset. Beaumaris’ midfield controlled the centre of the ground, winning clearances and providing quality supply to the forwards.
Aquinas OC, despite the loss, showed periods of resilience. Their defence worked tirelessly to halt Beaumaris’ relentless momentum. However, Aquinas found it difficult to transition the ball effectively into their forward line, often being caught on the counterattack. Riley Christgoergl, Tricia Cowan, and Dianna Haines were standout players for the day.
This victory for Beaumaris is a significant boost and their ability to play cohesive and attacking football was on full display. They will look to carry this form forward for the remainder of the season.
In the most thrilling match of the round between second and third, Old Geelong edged out Fitzroy by a single point for a final scoreline of 19-18 in a nail-biting contest that went down to the wire. The game was a testament to the competitiveness of the league, with both teams leaving everything on the field.
Old Geelong’s victory was built on their defensive strength and ability to withstand Fitzroy’s pressure. Their defensive unit was outstanding, consistently thwarting Fitzroy’s forward entries and providing crucial rebound opportunities.
Amy Halaby, Genevieve Ednie, and Kathleen Dunn were instrumental for Old Geelong, winning key possessions and driving their teams forward.
Despite going down by a point, Fitzroy showed why they are one of the top teams this season and shouldn’t be underestimated come finals time. Their midfield was industrious, and their forward line created several scoring opportunities, but moments of inaccuracy in front of goal proved costly. Sarah Lynas, Olivia Brilliant, and Lauren Atkinson were amongst the best for Fitzroy.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers secured a much-needed victory, defeating Westbourne Grammarians, with the final score reading 37-20 in a solid team performance. Coming off a tough loss, they were determined to get back on track, and their intensity was evident from the start.
Chloe Saultry, Georgia Ricardo, and Olivia Watkins were critical throughout the game, providing drive and creativity that set up numerous scoring opportunities for the Tigers. Their ability to win clearances and use the ball effectively was a highlight.
Westbourne Grammarians showed fight and determination, particularly through the efforts of Joudy Joud, Sienna Burns Bradley, and Morganne Gaston. Their midfield worked hard to compete with St Bedes, but the inability to convert some opportunities at goal proved costly.
Williamstown CYMS continued their unbeaten streak with a dominant 72-14 victory over Old Xaverians, further cementing their status as the team to beat this season. Williamstown’s all-around strength was on full display, with their clinical forward line, solid defence, and dynamic midfield all contributing to the comprehensive win.
Loren Mills and Megan Hazel Smart were standouts up forward, bagging multiple goals and showcasing their ability to find space and finish accurately. The midfield controlled the game, winning clearances and setting up scoring opportunities with ease.
Old Xaverians struggled to match Williamstown’s intensity and execution. Amy Benifer, Alessandra Libertone, and Hannah Ryan were standout players for Old Xaverians, who worked tirelessly to shut down Williamstown’s offensive pressure, but the gap remained too wide.
Williamstown’s offence was impenetrable, allowing Old Xaverians very few scoring opportunities. Jess Court, Anais Lipski, and Paras Paton were key performers and contributors to Williamstown’s success.
As the season progresses, the competition is reaching a fever pitch. Williamstown CYMS remain the clear frontrunner with their undefeated record, displaying a level of consistency and dominance that makes them the team to beat.
Fitzroy, despite their narrow loss, remains a strong contender, and their performance against Old Geelong shows they have the resilience and skill to bounce back. Old Geelong’s nail-biting win keeps them comfortably in finals contention, highlighting their ability to perform under pressure.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and Beaumaris both secured important victories, boosting their chances of climbing the ladder and securing finals positions. Aquinas OC and Old Xaverians will need to regroup and address their areas of improvement as they look to finish the season on a high note.

Parkdale edge Eagles in thriller as Oakleigh get on the board
Round 11 was headlined by a nail-biting contest between Marcellin and Parkdale Vultures which saw the latter claim the four points in a thrilling finish.
This weekend was a chance for teams to make an impact before the two-week break, and indeed many teams did leave a positive footprint heading into the rep footy bye.
AJAX put on another dominant display, defeating Glen Eira/Old McKinnon by 44 points.
The first quarter was one to remember for the away side, kicking 7.5.47 to the Gryphons solitary one goal.
The Gryphons did show some fight and determination in the rest of the game but could not chase AJAX on the scoreboard as both teams went on to kick a further seven goals.
Jordan Cohen and Richie Simon were key in front of goal for AJAX with five and four goals respectively.
This victory sees AJAX hold onto 2nd position, still just percentage from top spot. Whilst the Gryphons sit in 7th with some breathing space, two games clear of 8th place.
In what was the most exciting game of the weekend in Premier C, the Parkdale Vultures defeated Marcellin by 2 points.
The first half was largely controlled by the Vultures who lead on the scoreboard and showed a lot of hunger for the footy.
Their lead of 20-points at half-time could’ve been higher if not for some inaccuracy in front of goal, but it was a good lead nonetheless.
Marcellin needed to deliver a response, and that is what they did, reducing Parkdale’s lead to 17-points by three quarter-time to give themselves a realistic chance in the final term.
Marcellin kicked four of the first five goals in the fourth quarter to give themselves a 1-point lead, however a trio of behinds from the Vultures allowed Parkdale to get over the line and claim the four points.
In his first senior game this season, Marcus Alessi made a good contribution with two goals for Marcellin.
After having a tough start to their Premier C campaign, Oakleigh recorded their first win of 2024, defeating the Monash Blues by 26 points.
Oakleigh set the tone early with a dominant display in the first half, giving it their all in the contest and showing an eagerness to claim their first win.
Despite Monash’s best efforts and intent to fight back in the second half, Oakleigh broke further away in the third quarter and comfortably got home.
Nixon Hall, James Flett and Charles King were among the best players for the Monash Blues, whilst Rogan Kitts lead the way in front of goal for the victorious Oakleigh.
The result of this game has implications for the ladder, with Oakleigh jumping to 9th position, slightly ahead of the Blues on percentage.
Old Carey continued their run of good form with an impressive 43-point victory against PEGS
The first half belonged to Old Carey who had amassed a strong 39-point lead by half-time with good ball movement and pressure in the contest seeing them through the first-half.
To PEGS’ credit, they kept Old Carey scoreless in the third quarter, however Old Carey were back to their normal ways in the final term to comfortably win.
Riley Thompson and Trent Warren continued their good seasons with three-goals each for Old Carey.
This loss will make it more difficult for PEGS to make finals now sitting four games out of the finals placings. Whilst Old Carey remain on top of the ladder with AJAX not far behind them on percentage.
Hampton Rovers reinforced their top four credentials with a 23-point victory over Mazenod
Mazenod had the lead at quarter-time as the Rovers were inaccurate in front of goal, but the home side quickly turned things around to build up a 9-point lead at halftime.
The lead from the Rovers only increased that throughout the afternoon to find themselves once again on the winners list.
Jamie Delaney and Dillon Melnjak lead the way for the Rovers who find themselves in a good position, just one game behind Old Carey and AJAX, whilst Mazenod are two wins and a percentage boost out of the top four.
The action resumes after the two-week break with Round 12, some teams will still be feeling the effects of a limited playing list with many players taking the opportunity to catch some warmer temperatures away from Melbourne.
AJAX host the Parkdale Vultures in an exciting match-up between 2nd and 4th. If Parkdale are back at full-strength they may get over the line, however AJAX have shown a lot of promise in recent weeks.
The other top-four battle sees Old Carey host the Hampton Rovers. A win for the Rovers could see them with a top-two spot by the end of the round.
The Monash Blues host Marcellin in a game that both sides have a strong chance of winning. Both teams have shown they have a lot of potential and when they get going and build some momentum will play a good brand of footy.
The other match-ups see 5th v 6th meet as Mazenod play PEGS, whilst the two sides promoted from Division 1 last season, Oakleigh and Glen Eira/Old McKinnon, will meet on Oakleigh’s turf.

SOUTH: Stefanakis, Behnk, Christian, Ferraro, Dean, Pewtress, Szonyi.
A break in the VAFA Holmesglen Under 19’s fixture has enabled the rare opportunity for players competition-wide to participate in Representative Football. Saturday’s Holmesglen Under 19 Showcase at Elsternwick park involved 46 of the finest young talents from across the VAFA. From the opening bounce, skills were essentially flawless. North opened their scoring account early on, before South immediately struck back. The crowd would be wowed by the speed on the ball, as well as the ability of all players to execute difficult skills. The third quarter would belong largely to North skipper and Old Xaverians midfielder Harry Bird, who imposed himself in the midfield. South would execute a dominant final quarter display, kicking seven goals to none and running away to a 49-point win that belied how close the contest had been.

VAFA: Emery, Linehan, Virtue, Cowan, Sheridan
The VAFA’s Big V Premier B-Division 3 team defeated a spirited Bendigo FNL line-up at Elsternwick Park in a tight four-quarter contest. The Vics had the better of the early stages in beautiful conditions, booting 3.4 to 1.2 to hold a 14-point advantage at the first change, with their big-bodied ruck combination of Jack Sheridan and Callum Heath challenging athletic Bendigo big man Caleb Ernst. “Our start was the key in the end,” said Coach Luke Mahoney. “Both teams had significant momentum at times and that provide a great contest between offence and defence. I was really pleased with our ball movement – at times, it was impressive to watch. The boys had to dig deep in the last quarter, and they showed that wearing the Big V meant something to each and every one of them.”

The Big V Women received a late scare before ultimately seeing off a desperate finish from Perth Football League to win a nailbiting clash by a solitary point at Steel Blue Oval in Perth.
The rain gave way to a stiff breeze, leaving the players to battle slippery conditions underfoot and tricky conditions in the air, making for a scrappy and congested opening term where neither team could break free and punish the other. “The opposition really focused on pressure and speed, and they certainly delivered on both,” said Big V coach, Paul Groves. “We made a few tweaks at half-time and had a great third quarter into the breeze.” The Vics showed composure late, taking territory and locking it in their front half to see out the clock and score a thrilling hard-fought 1-point win and successfully defend their unbeaten record.

Wasteful disposal was the main culprit in the Big V Men’s 23-point loss to Perth FL in blustery conditions at Steel Blue Oval in Bassendean. The gusty breeze played havoc with the Vics’ ability to control the ball and uncharacteristic turnovers repeatedly cost the visitors at both ends of the ground, halting possession chains and robbing them of precious momentum. Both teams applied plenty of pressure, but it was the home team who absorbed it more effectively. Trailing by 20 points at three-quarter time, the Vics started the last term brightly as Charlie MacIsaac slotted his second goal before Perth had multiple opportunities to put the game to bed. “We tried several things to get the game on our terms and felt like we were doing well enough in general play but just didn’t apply the scoreboard pressure off the back of that.” said Big V Coach, Greg Hutchison

Pirates pull off an upset, as Prahran go top
Round 12 saw Division 1 men’s teams battling it out in wet conditions this weekend as the race for the top four intensifies.
Kew and Parkside both sit on seven wins each with the Old Peninsula Pirates made their case, taking a huge scalp over UHS-VU that gets them right back into finals contention.
Old Peninsula claimed a huge win on the weekend defeating UHS-VU by five points in a thriller.
The first quarter was a game of momentum shifts with the Pirates opened up a 21-point lead early, then the Vultures midfield of Harrison Kennedy and James Healey got to work as they kicked the next four unanswered goals to give them the lead.
Pirates Forward Bailey Payze was the real difference in the game kicking six goals to have one of the best individual performances this season.
The ruck matchup was an important one given the conditions and Pirates ruckman Lochie Baczyk competed well against Nicholas Wallace which was a great battle.
Pirate midfielders James Bravo and Kurt Thiele continued to stamp their authority on the game helping their side have a slender four-point lead at three-quarter time.
The game for the majority of the last was at a knife’s edge with every contest, tap forward and smother crucial in defining the winner.
Ultimately, some Nelson Forrest magic for the Pirates took some crucial contested marks down back to help his side get the win.
Prahran took top spot after having a hard-fought win over Parkside by 17 points.
Conditions affected both side’s ability to deliver inside 50 efficiently, so the midfield battle was always going to be crucial not just this game but across all games this weekend.
In wet games, the classy players are known to step up and Prahran midfielder James Musster did just that, proving a difficult matchup for the Devils in the first quarter.
Prahran were able to lock it in their forward half early with Ethan Plaza getting the scoreboard ticking and looked dangerous early as his side took an eight-point lead at quarter time.
In the second term Prahran started to have a big influence on proceedings as forward Matt Clifford kicked the visitors only two goals scored in the quarter to give them a 15-point lead in a low scoring affair.
The game saw a momentum shift in the third term when Prahran onballer Joey Bell was involved in a collision which resulted in a melee behind play.
The Devils punished the opposition whose heads were not in the game kicking three goals in a row including a classy finish by Matt Holden.
Michael Romano isolating deep in the forward line had a positive impact for the Devils as his side trailed by a solitary point at three-quarter time.
Oliver Burke struck early in the last quarter with a much-needed steadier for Prahran as they proved too strong with three goals to one in the run home.
With Shaun Chapman being out in the past couple of weeks, Prahran captain Rory Brodie has stood up having another great game this time on Joel Stevens and Lewis Daniels.
Ormond had a comfortable win over the Old Yarra Cobras by 73 points.
It was a first half where the Monders really should have had a larger lead dominating territory but not being able to capitalise kicking 6.11 into half time.
Ethan Hanley thrived in these tricky conditions, applying elite pressure around the contest which the Old Yarra Cobras couldn’t handle having kicked just the one major at the main break.
The Monders midfield had a stronger second half with Jack Mason continuing his impressive form, as did Rhys Kennedy and Jackson Hille all displaying they have the ability to hit the scoreboard.
The Cobras defence had it tough all day with the amount of entries coming in but credit to Benjamin Makowski who played a strong game.
The Monders running away 15.21 (111) to 5.8 (38) winners.
Kew go one step closer in their pursuit to the top four defeating Therry Penola by 35 points.
The Bears went off the blocks quickly kicking the first three goals of the game.
Bears half-back Max Poletti still was able to make an impact in the wet conditions but his side’s inaccuracy kept Therry Penola in the game.
Therry Penola brought up their first major late in the second quarter to give them some momentum trailing by only 20 points at half time.
The young Therry Penola side was able to peg back the lead in the third term, with some good pressure from their midfield and a late goal brought it back to 15 points.
With a bit of scoreboard pressure on the Bears and the out of William Llewelyn this week, Therry Penola could sense an upset. But Bears defender Luka Argent had other plans helping his side keep Therry Penola goalless in the last quarter.
The Preston Bullants got over the line against a gallant West Brunswick side by 8 points.
The first three quarters were dominated by the Preston Bullants’ midfield with Luke Green and Hugo Byron leading the charge but couldn’t capitalise kicking 5.12 at half time.
Bullants forward Alex Johnston presented as a great target for his side proving difficult for Magpies defenders.
Trailing by 27 points at three-quarter time the Magpies knew they had nothing to lose and decided to keep the game plan simple and just get it forward in a messy fashion.
The Magpies kicked four out of the last five goals but a Conor Howard goal for the Preston Bullants spoiled the party.
Sides will have a much-needed break again this weekend as a big round 12 awaits them.
Another top-four clash awaits us at DW Lucas Oval as the top of the table Prahran play the Monders in what could be a game for top of the table. Both midfields are ticking along nicely as Prahran would be hoping Shaun Chapman is available.
Therry Penola and the Magpies play each other again. The Magpies are playing much better footy compared to the last time they met Therry Penola (in a defeat of 50 points in round 1) as it poses an opportunity for redemption.
The Kew Bears are away against the Old Yarra Cobras in what is a must-win game for the Bears top-four hopes.
The game of the round is Pirates and the Devils at Harry McDonald Oval. The Devils will be looking to get back on the winners list after losing three in a row whilst the Pirates will be coming off the bye full of confidence.
The Vultures line up against the Preston Bullants who desperately needed that win on the weekend. The Vultures have missed Esubalew Ramsay in the midfield and they are hopeful he will be back in round 12.

Vultures claim a massive four points, as Tonners continue dominance
Parkdale solidified their top four and finals credentials with a win, as did the top two, flexing their muscles in Round 11 of the Division 1 Women’s competition.
The Finals race is also heating up, with five games to sort the teams’ positions ahead of late August / early September. With that, this is the time of the season where teams want to be playing some of their best footy, and that certainly seems to be the case.
To kickstart the round, Old Brighton continued with their unbeaten run in 2024, following a 45-point victory over Old Melburnians
In trying conditions at the home of the OM’s, Elsternwick Park, Old Brighton were busy from the get-go.
Inaccuracy in front of goals cost the Tonners from breaking the game open there and then, however they were sound defensively carrying a 1.5 (11) to 1.0 (6) lead into quarter time.
The visitors had all the ball after the first change with eight scoring shots to zero in the second term.
Courtesy of persistent midfield dominance and forward pressure, Old Melburnians barely had a look at scoring, but again inaccuracy was the name of the game for Old Brighton with a two-goal six quarter.
After half time it was much of the same for the Tonners, refining their accuracy around the sticks. Particularly from skipper Catrina O’Brien who kicked her sixth bag of three or more goals this season.
At one point they held a game-high 47-point advantage before a late Georgina Phelan goal for OM’s reduced the three quarter-time margin to 41.
A mixture of tough conditions and fatigue meant that no goals were kicked in the last, as Old Brighton came up victors, 7.17 (59) to 2.2 (14).
Among the best for the OM’s were Millie Nelson, Emily Fraser and Olivia Fairchild. Whilst for Old Brighton, Katie Grant, Siena Scott and India Tait who received for the eight time this year was named in the best.
Marcellin now sit comfortably second on the ladder, after their narrow 11-point win against Old Haileybury.
The weather clearly played a factor across all three games in Round 11, and the scoreboard reflects that particularly from this contest.
It was scrappy, it was wet, tough to gather clean possession and thus ultimately tough to kick goals.
From a Marcellin perspective, this was a game that they simply had to put away if they were to solidify their credentials at premiership challengers to Old Brighton.
So that is exactly what they did, it was tough, but they took the chocolates 2.11 (23) to 1.6 (12).
It was a gruelling first half, and for the most part incredibly even, as neither the Bloods nor Eagles could slot a major.
That was until T Zagontinos converted for the game’s first major and lifting Marcellin to a 6-point advantage at the main break.
The goal clearly gifted the visiting Eagles some momentum after half-time, as their lead grew out to 15-points on the back of a Zoe Glascott goal.
The rain and margin proved to be too much for the Bloods to work back from, despite kicking the only goal of the final term, Marcellin taking an 11-point win.
Alana Pane, Hayley Harley and Annabel Scott were named as some of the best for the winning Eagles. Old Haileybury’s Emily Rundle, Nicky Nowlan and Eloise McCrae were also mentioned amongst the best on ground.
In what loomed as game of the round, the fourth-placed Parkdale Vultures hosted third-placed Collegians at Gerry Green Reserve.
The opening term was much of what we came to expect from the two sides, the being intense and pressure football.
Parkdale held a narrow lead going into the quarter-time break, just four-points the difference.
Throughout the second term, it was all Vultures. The hosts held their opponents scoreless whilst added 2.3 (15) to their own tally, carrying a 19-point buffer into half-time.
Heading into the second half, the Lions ultimately needed a response, but the urgency and determination of the Parkdale midfield meant that much of the ball was in the Vultures forward half.
Parkdale piled on seven goals to one after half-time, 10.10 (70) to 2.0 (12) and claiming the four points.
The win elevated Parkdale up to third on the ladder, which could hold significant ramifications come finals.
Among the best for the Vultures were Sienna Symons and Lucy Burgess who kicked three goals each, as well as an impressive showing from vice-captain Isabella Daddo.
Heading into this week’s contests, once again there some games that will dictate how the ladder shapes ahead of the final month of the home and away season.
Old Haileybury will host Old Melburnians in what shapes as a battle to avoid bottom spot. Marcellin will look to just about secure a top two spot in their match against Collegians, while Old Brighton face Parkdale at Brighton Beach Oval.

Swans loom as contenders as St Marys claim a big result
Round 11 of Division 2 Men’s brought some of the more thrilling comebacks this season, with teams showing incredible heart and determination as we lead into the bye.
A champion team knows how to come back, and at Bennettswood Reserve, Brunswick made a statement, with a comeback win against Wattle Park. The men in purple defeated the Animals by 21 points.
Both teams came out strong in the first quarter, with the Animals showing promise early on, securing a narrow 2-point lead by the end of the term.
However, Wattle Park rallied nicely in the second quarter, kicking four goals to two and surging ahead to establish a handy 14-point lead over the ladder leaders.
Brunswick proved why they are the best team in the section, their whole team looked much better after halftime as they built momentum when going forward.
They started playing with intent and earned a 19-point lead at the final change. From there, Brunswick never looked back and defeated the struggling Wattle Park 13.11 (89) to 9.14 (68).
Despite their spirited start to the year, Brunswick’s dominance meant that Wattle Park endured their fifth consecutive loss this season. They now sit a game and percentage outside the top 4.
Brunswick’s Angus Coverdale was the player of the match as he kicked 6 goals, and Hayden Parker supported him by booting in 3 goals.
Brunswick’s coach, Tom Hunter spoke post-game saying, “Before this game, we lost against South Melbourne because they were excellent against us.”
“Credit to Wattle Park because they were ahead of us in the first half, but in the second half, we decided to play aggressively.”
Once again, there’s hope for St Mary’s Salesian, as they defeated finals challengers Whitefriars by 38 points.
The first quarter was a nail-biting contest, with both teams going toe-to-toe. However, St Mary’s found their stride in the second quarter, pulling ahead with a 15-point buffer heading into the main break.
The Saints continued to perform after half time and left the Friars struggling to keep up, carrying a more than five-goal lead into the final term.
St Mary’s defence remained rock-solid, keeping the Friars at bay and preventing any serious comeback attempts. By the fourth quarter, St Mary’s had sealed their victory with a decisive score of 15.8 (98) to Whitefriars’s 8.12 (60).
St Mary’s Jude Dannaoui had a standout game with three majors, while teammates Trent Ryan, Luke McIntosh, and Andrew Howell each chipped in with 2 goals, adding to the team’s dominant performance.
St Mary’s coach Clay Tait expressed happiness after the game: “We attacked the contest hard all day and drove the ball forward as much as possible. With a young and inexperienced side, we’ve seen that our best is very good; it’s about getting that more consistently.”
South Melbourne, the only team to challenge Brunswick this season, kept its head high as it emerged victorious again. South Melbourne defeated Elsternwick by 46 points.
The Swans took control from the outset, securing a commanding 20-point lead in the first quarter.
South Melbourne’s defence stifled the Wickers in the second quarter, allowing them few opportunities to score. The final scoreboard reflected their dominance, with South Melbourne triumphing 10.15 (75) to Elsternwick’s 4.5 (29).
South Melbourne’s had a ray of contributors with eight individual goal kickers.
Elsternwick captain Richard Main booted in 2 goals for the visitors but didn’t get support from his teammates.
After the game, South Melbourne coach Nick Abbott said, “It was important for us to win against a team above us on the ladder.”
“We still have room for improvement, but belief is growing, and the club has an exciting vibe.”
“We had to win the contested ball and make the day uncomfortable for Elsternwick.”
MHSOB emerged victorious over Aquinas, recording 79-42 win at Melbourne High School.
The game began with a strong opening from Aquinas, who came out swinging, opening up an 18-point quarter tine advantage.
Defence was the name of the game in the second term, with MHSOB scoring just four behinds to Aquinas one behind in what became a scrubby contest. The Bloods holding a 15-point lead at the main break.
MHSOB coach Bernie Pretty must’ve given an almighty half time spray, because his side cam out of the break roaring.
The Unicorns outscored their opponents 67-15 in the second half to runaway 37-point victors.
MHSOB’s Mitchell Wilson kicked in 3 second half goals. Meanwhile, Aquinas’ Harry Dwyer booted in 5 goals to push his team, but it’s a team sport.
Post-game Pretty said; “Our focus was and will continue to improve our decision-making and skill execution.”
“We started slowly but progressed in the second half and took plenty of positives, aside from the win, out of the game.”
Hawthorn kept their winning streak alive with a convincing 24-point victory over Bulleen Templestowe at Ted Ajani Reserve.
In the first quarter, it was the Bullants who started with a bang as they were heading into with a 13-point- lead.
But the Hawks snapped into gear and put foot to the floor on the back of a six goal to one second quarter.
Except for that first term, Hawthorn marched on with the lead every quarter, ensuring they won the game comfortably. The final score was Hawthorn 14.9 (93) to 11.3 (69) Bulleen Templestowe.
Hawthorn’s Will Molloy was the top goal kicker of the match, as he converted on four occasions for his team. Whilst Seb Cookson at the other end of the ground for the Bullants, also kicked four of his own.
As we head towards the twelfth round after the bye, teams are more desperate to perform in every game as the business end of the season looms.
Brunswick will face Elsternwick at Gillon Oval, while South Melbourne will be looking to claim another four points against Bulleen Templestowe. Whitefriars will host Wattle Park, MHSOB vs Hawthorn will be a game to watch, and finally Aquinas will host St Mary’s Salesian at JW Manson Reserve.

Gryphons edge out Power House to remain atop the ladder
Things are heating up in the Division 2 Women’s competition as all teams kick into gear as the race to finals ramps up. With the number of rounds remaining able to be counted on one hand, every win from here on out is all the more important. Whitefriars, understanding the gravity, secured a narrow 2-point victory while the Glen Eira Gryphons also managed to hold on, outlasting a fiery Power House.
On a wet and woeful Winter’s morning, Oakleigh record their fourth win on the trot to position themselves in finals contention as we head for the home straight. Unable to compete with the cohesive attacking style of play brought by the Krushers, Old Camberwell/AJAX are left still searching for victory.
The slippery conditions made it all the more difficult to keep a hold of the Sherrin, with Old Camberwell/AJAX unable to hit the scoreboard until the second half, in which they recorded a single behind for the match.
Oakleigh had much of the footy early on, to give themselves a comfortable lead. Recording 21 points to half time was a significant advantage in wet weather footy, whereby scoring opportunities proved hard to come by for the opposition. Alas, it was too much of a lead to claw back.
Hayley Mrocki was a stand out for the home side in her 100th game for AJAX. Meanwhile, Oakleigh’s 5 majors came off the boot of five individual goal kickers, with the likes of Pia Hobday and Ruby Ford standouts for the Krushers on the day.
Whitefriars hosted Richmond Central in what proved to be a tight tussle of the middle order. The contest was neck and neck for the full four quarters, with Whitefriars just edging out the Snakes by 2 points.
Richmond took a marginal lead at the first break after a relatively high scoring opening term. From there, the rain set in, and the scoring shots were few and far between. Rushed behinds seemed to be the nature of play and were ultimately the decider. A third goal each way came in the last quarter.
Richmond’s skipper, Mia Hyde-Smith, was a standout for the travelling side, taking charge to score the three goals for the day. Maeve Bohanna, Clare Fernandes, and Toni
Robb each contributed a single major for the Friars, while Laura Mimmo and Lizzy Yore featured in the best.
This win keeps Whitefriars comfortably in fifth four now, nipping at the heels of the top four.
Determined to get back on the winners list and back to their best standard of footy, Hawthorn caused an upset on home soil over a strong Old Trinity. Hawthorn was defiant in their resurgence in Div 2 Women’s, producing some of their season best footy as they look to stamp their mark back in the competition.
The Hawks soared to a 38-point win over the T’s, slotting 7 goals for the day, while most impressively restricting their opponents to just the single major through the big sticks.
Joelly Firmin had a breakout performance, kicking her first bag of multiple goals for the season. Adding to Firmin’s 3, Emily Truscott finished with 2 goals of her own.
Despite Hawthorn unable to register a score in the final term, they had well and truly done enough to secure a comfortable victory at home.
Natasha Borash was important for Old Trinity on a tough day while Lara Young delivered the lone goal.
Hampton Rovers travelled to face Mazenod, securing their eighth win of the season to remain comfortably in the race to finals. Despite a slow start on the scoreboard, The Rovers had the upper hand from the outset, dictating the terms of the match to charge home to a 26-point victory.
Mazenod had a few opportunities on goal early in the match, although were unable to convert their first major until the third term. While the Rovers hit the scoreboard in every quarter, extending their lead at each change.
Zoe Spicer managed the goal scoring for Mazenod, while Stephanie Rogers and Emily Skrzyniarz put together their best performances.
Matilda Clarkson, Isabella Cameron, and Kiera Geddes all impressed for Hampton Rovers to secure their side a strong win on the road.
Rounding out the weekend, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon hosted Power House for twilight footy at Packer Park, in a top 4 clash.
It was a slow start with a goal each way, before the gryphons doubled their score in the second, taking a 6-point advantage at the main break.
This low scoring contest continued for duration right until that final siren where the Gryphons walked away victorious 3.5 (23) to 3.1 (19).
Aleesha Whittle scored 2 for the day, aptly supported by Eliza Morrison with 1. Joining the girls in the best with standout performances were Sarah Fitzpatrick and Gemma Strangio from Glen Eira.
At the other end, Catherine Bartholomew, Kate Coyle, and Michaela Di Lecce contributed a goal each, while the everyreliable Grace Read dominated yet again.
With just five rounds of the season remaining, teams are starting to make their moves, with 6 sides still very much in finals contention, with the top 4 not yet locked and loaded.
An intriguing matchup to launch Round 12 will see top of the table Glen Eira/Old McKinnon take on third placed Oakleigh, who cannot afford to be losing games at this stage with just 2 points separating them from second, and the same down to fourth.
Power House will be looking to get back on the winners list when they host Richmond Central, with the threat of Whitefriars nipping at their heels to break into the top 4.
Mazenod will come up against Hawthorn, while Old Camberwell/AJAX will host Whitefriars at Gary Smorgon Oval. Old Trinity will face an in-form Hampton Rovers for the first time this season.

Div 3’s top sides shine in a wet-weather round
In a weekend of gloomy, rain-filled skies across Melbourne, the best teams of Division 3 excelled in the muddy conditions.
On the wide La Trobe University Oval, torrential downpour set up a low-scoring affair between La Trobe University and Canterbury, with the Cobras defence producing a clinic. La Trobe were held to just 11 points for the entire game, including just three behinds by three-quarter-time.
Canterbury was inaccurate in the first half, scoring 2.7 (19) by the main break, and led by just 17 points. Their attack clicked into gear in the second half however, and the Cobras managed to score 8.13 (61) to earn a 50-point victory.
Connor McCredden was best on for the Trobers, as Hugh O’Callaghan was the lone goal scorer.
Lachy Shearer and Nathan Beacom were amongst Canterbury’s best as Rohan Walmsley punted three majors. Despite the win, Canterbury remains fourth on the Div 3 ladder after Round 11.
After a strong opening quarter, Power House were in no position to lose against Albert Park. Power House scored 6.3 (39) to 0.1 (1) in a punishing first term that set the tone for the remainder of the match.
The Falcons equalled Power House across the second and third quarters, however they never managed to cut into the quarter-time margin. Power House never faltered through to the final siren, as they produced a solid 58-point win.
Bryce Aggiss and Felix Metz were the Falcons best players, as Jack Lee booted three goals.
Jack Taylor-Evans kicked five for Power House, joining Kieran Wotherspoon and Michael Timmons in best-onground votes.
In a top-five clash, St John’s cruised past Richmond Central at home by 70 points. Four consecutive goals from Matthew Carnelley turned a five-point lead to five goals by quarter time, as the JOCS broke away from early restraint by the Snakes. St John’s defence was sound throughout too, limiting Richmond Central to just 51 points for the match.
Carnelley (6) and Mitch Barry (5) combined for 11 goals, as Jarrod Ely also snagged one in his 100th match. Shannon Marsh and Daniel Abou-Karroum were deemed best on for the JOCs.
Ben Dillon (2) was the only multiple goal kicker for the Snakes, as Richmond Central’s attention now turns to a season-defining game against Power House in Round 12. Having won five on the trot before this week, the Snakes will be eyeing an upset victory to stake their claim as a potential premiership side.
Box Hill North have won back-to-back games after defeating a spirited Eley Park team. In consistent rain, the first half was a scrappy contest that kept both sides in the hunt. The strength of either club’s key forwards was vital in goalscoring, as Blake Williams of the Demons (8 goals) and Tom Johnston of the Sharks (6) filled the scoresheet.
Box Hill North held a slim seven-point margin at quarter time, but their quality began to creep in throughout the rest of the match. The Sharks kept playing in determined fashion, however ran out of legs in the last, the Demons nailing ten final-quarter goals to skew the margin out to 96 points.
“I felt we had a far better balanced team on the park yesterday,” Eley Park coach Matt Embling said, in relation to players returning from unavailability.
“Our work rate in the first half was solid. The third quarter Box Hill North played some good footy though, with Williams and [Josh] Chivers giving me a few headaches.”
Williams and Chivers combined for 15 goals in the Demons forward line, as Carl Sieger was rewarded with best-on-ground.
Ben and Mackenzie Field were amongst the Sharks best players, joined by Lachie Blunden and Johnston who were admirable for all four quarters.
Eley Park will refresh over the league’s bye this weekend, as a rematch with Albert Park looms for Round 12.
North Brunswick’s quality has proven too good over a defiant Chadstone side, as wet conditions restricted the Bulls’ regular scoring prowess. The Bulls, who albeit were eventual 86-point winners, were kept goalless with Chadstone in a gritty first quarter at Jordan Reserve.
North Brunswick’s fortunes changed in the second term however, as they reached a 25-point lead at halftime. 41 points to one in the final term boosted the Bulls to yet another one-sided victory, however Chadstone’s efforts for three quarters were admirable.
Five goals from Andrew Ramzy were crucial for North Brunswick, as Ashley Rae was deemed best on. Joshua Kubeil, Logan Stott, and Ben Ogilvie were amongst the Synners best in the sodden environment.
Division 3 will rest for another week across the VAFA’s league-wide bye, as ladder-shaping matches emerge across the upcoming Round 12.
St John’s host a confident Box Hill North coming off consecutive wins, a team that would be optimistic at their chances for a potential boilover at Thomas Carroll Reserve.
Power House face Richmond Central in a blockbuster topfive clash, with a loss to either side sure to impact ladder positions.
Canterbury play Chadstone, as Swinburne University will come off a two week break to try foil an undefeated North Brunswick.
Albert Park will be aiming for revenge against the Sharks, with Eley Park’s sole win coming against the Falcons in Round 2. La Trobe have the bye.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

Old Brighton stunned as De La Salle dominate
Round 12 of the Holmesglen Under 19’s Premier season encapsulated the closeness of the teams, and the immense young talent that brims within this competition.
Opening the weekend, Williamstown CYMS triumphed over a disappointing Old Xaverians outfit.
Holding a lead for a majority of the contest, the boys from Williamstown put together a well-rounded effort to outlast their opposition, going on to win by 22 points.
Kobe Williams was the standout for Williamstown, whilst Andreas Martinez, Xavier Snelling and Cade Galea were important in the win.
Heading into the latter part of the season, it is vital for Old Xavs to recapture their once impressive form and reinstate themselves as contenders as finals looms on the horizon. Cruz McAuliffe was strong in the loss.
Old Scotch continued their winning ways, overpowering Beaumaris with ease.
From the opening siren, it was always going to be Old Scotch’s day, running rampant from the first bounce in a 4 goal to 1 first quarter.
Concluding as 106-point victors, Old Scotch continue to build momentum. Elliot Power was named best afield, whilst Henry Dixon, Aiden Brien and Will Darcy impressed.
Spencer Hunter was elusive down forward, finishing his day with five majors.
With the loss, the Sharks fall to last position on the ladder, behind De La Salle only by percentage. Max Newman-Morris toiled hard in the resounding loss.
Perhaps the most shocking result of the season, De La Salle have announced themselves as a genuine threat, downing Caulfield Grammarians by 77-points.
After tallying their first win, De La Salle have yet again reaped the rewards for their hard work, dominating their opposition at Waverley oval.
Holding Caulfield goalless for a majority of the opening half, the De La defence was most impressive. Luke Lyngberg was important, whilst James Harper, Joel Tyquin and Josh Cumberlidge performed well.
James Hill and Brodie Perry remained as the shining light for Caulfield.
In another shocking result, University Blues put ladder–leaders Old Brighton to the sword.
A fairly even tussle in the opening stages of the game, the Blues soon took over, entering the main break with a four-goal lead. Such ascendancy would result in a 62-point victory.
George McCulloch and Lachie Francis steered the side to victory, whilst Max Diffey, Johnny Pring, Luca Di Lallo and Oliver Williams all had standout games.
For the opposition, sibling pair Maxwell Langworthy and Andrew Langworthy were prominent. The loss has brought the Brighton boys back to the pack of teams vying for finals, now just a single game clear atop the ladder.
The final game of Saturday’s schedule saw St Kevin’s outlast St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Mentone reserve. Liam Edwards, Oscar white, Lucas May and Benjamin Palmer were impressive in the 34-point win.
A round of shock performances, the competition is fast evolving into one where anyone can win, at any given time.
Round 13 comes after a two-week bye and some muchneeded respite for teams bleeding numbers at this point of the year. When sides return to compete in Round 13, it will be the ladder leaders Old Brighton coming up against the trailing De La Salle, only as of late De La are looking red-hot whilst the Tonners have been rather shaky.
The Uni Blues will look to continue their winning ways against Beaumaris, while Old Xaverians will hope to find their best form when they face Caulfield Grammarians, with both sides looking to climb out of the middle order.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will have their hands full when they host an Old Scotch side who are brimming with confidence. And the final matchup of the round will see Williamstown CYMS play the steadily building St Kevin’s.

congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
50
Oliver Krivaci (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
Congratulations to OIiver on reaching 50 games. A remarkable achievement for a bloke still eligible for U19’s yet looks 27 years of age! ‘Ollie’ has played a few Senior games to add to the bulk of his U19s tally and we look forward to the big strong utility providing highlights during matches for the Glen Eira/ Old McKinnon Gryphons for years to come.
Harrison Ritchie (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
50
Congratulations to Harrison Ritchie on playing 50 games. Another product from McKinnon Secondary College, Harrison has quickly become a mainstay of the Reserves forward line. A powerful leader and strong mark, we look forward to many more goals being kicked at Packer Park for years to come.
Rohan Walmsley (Canterbury)
Canterbury Football Club Life Member Rohan ‘Wombat’ Walmsley celebrates 200 games in Round 12, 2024. He arrived at the Club in 2008 after a twoyear stint at De La Salle OC. His impact was felt immediately, and he took on the captaincy, leading his team to a grand final in the SFNL. He would go on to win his first of five Club Best & Fairest’s that year, also claiming the prestigious award in ‘09, ‘11, ‘14 and ’15. True to his character, Rohan was an incredible off-field asset and played an integral role in assisting the coaches to their respective premierships. At the peak of his power the club has not seen a better midfielder. ‘Wombat’ can play outside or get his own ball at the coalface and is dangerous when pushed forward as he could take a big grab and is a very reliable set shot. He has never wasted a kick. Rohan has been an extremely loyal servant of the club for a long period of time. After all these years, he enters his 200th game a ferocious competitor who is respected by everyone who has the pleasure of watching him, playing alongside him or against him.
