VAFA and the TAC band together for Road Safety Round It takes all of us to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads. Harry Hill, captain of Old Brighton is part of the TAC Road Safety campaign.
Making this a reality will only be possible if we all work together and play our part by driving safely.
Hill joined VAFA’s For the Love of the Game podcast ahead of Road Safety Round to explain the message behind the blue bands that will be worn this weekend.
This year marks 31 years of the TAC and AFL Victoria working together to speak to Victorians about road safety in order to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the roads.
“It’s such a massive message, especially around footy clubs.
The message is just as important now as it was 31 years ago. As part of that partnership, the 2022 TAC & VAFA Road Safety Round will be held on the 15-17th of July, and every club state-wide is invited to take part.
The way that footy clubs work, I think the important part of the message is we want to save as many lives as we can, we don’t want to lose any more people on our roads. Making sure your mates get home safely. Knowing when you’ve had too much to drive.
This year, we aren’t just inviting clubs to participate, we’re calling on everyone in the community to get involved by wearing a new kind of armband, a blue armband. Paying homage to the black armbands traditionally worn on the field to honour a death in the community, this new armband is a reminder we all have someone to drive safely for.
We’re fortunate to be able to be involved (in this weekend). It’s great that the VAFA is getting around and it’s a really important message that we’ve set.” Hill said. Why is this important?
Whether it’s your mother, your mate, your sister, your son or your entire team; whether it’s someone who is here, or someone who is no longer with us. The band contains a QR code that can be scanned to see a number of videos from Victorians talking about their reason for wearing the band, and everyone is invited to share their own reason on their socials.
As of the 28th June 2022 we have lost 124 lives on our roads in Victoria. 124 too many. Last year, even with statewide lockdowns and a decrease in the amount of drivers on the road, 232 lives were lost on Victorians roads. And during the past 5 years, 1,182 lives have been lost on Victorian roads. Of this, 526 were from Melbourne (44.5%) and 655 were from rural Victoria (55.4%).
The aim is to use these armbands to help create awareness and encourage community discussion about our mission to

Beware the Wounded Warriors Of course, to play with the best at the pointy end of the season, you have to beat the best. St Kevin’s sent an ominous warning to the competition with an opening term blitz when they took to the field. After back-to-back losses, the coaching staff has answered the challenge, and they’re past two matches have gone back to the St Kevin’s stranglehold, with opposition sides managing just 7-goals in both games.
When we signed off on this forum a fortnight ago, it was a very different looking ladder and landscape to the one we’re now confronted with leading into Round 12. University Blues have been found guilty of breaching the player points system and have moved from fifth position on the table, to ninth. From 6 wins and 5 losses, they’ll enter Round 12 with 1 win, and 1 loss to their name.
Collegians have mental scars when playing St Kevin’s considering the 2017 and 2018 Grand Finals. And while a home and away victory won’t replace the pain felt from those losses. Walking away with the four points to stop the wounding will help (if only for a moment).
The club has seven games to get out of the relegation zone and remain in the William Buck Premier section beyond 2022. For all the off-field attention and focus they’ve had since the verdict was handed down, on the field, this may galvanise the side in a way we haven’t seen since the 2019 Premiership year.
With the changing of the ladder, it’s the first time since the conclusion of Round 7 Old Trinity have found themselves outside the relegation zone.
In that six-game stretch after the double bye, Blues had an average winning margin of 67.5 points. If a side has ever felt like they’re backs are right up against the wall, with something to prove to the competition. Beware the wounded warriors. Guy Martyn needs no further ammunition than this to get his troops up on Saturday.
The T’s sole focus is staying up in the William Buck Premier section. They don’t believe in going down a section to regroup, restock and “go again”. Jamie Cassidy-McNamara has the utmost belief in his playing group that they’re capable of rebuilding without the need to play in Premier B.
Finals are off the table. Pride and redemption is firmly seated in the head chair. Old Scotch will be the first team to feel the wrath of the Blues come Saturday afternoon. And, if the season opener between these two is anything to go by, the RSN Carnival Match of the Day has all the makings of a thriller.
For the moment, they have a two-game buffer on University Blues (9th) and St Bernard’s (10th), and with Old Melburnians awaiting them at the Daley Oval, they come off the double bye with an inner confidence and belief of belonging in the VAFA’s top section.
The Cardinals stormed home with eight final quarter goals to win the game. The youthful exuberance of Scotch willed them over the line. This time around, Will Carrington faces off against his old side, Sam Grimley is red-hot in front of goal, and Ayce Cordy is well-rested from the double bye.
Add to that they were soundly wounded and comprehensively embarrassed against Caulfield prior to the bye. The ego took a dent after a terrific win against St Bernard’s in Round 10. The opening three quarters against OM’s they answered every challenge thrown at them, before the experience of playing at Elsternwick Park overran the young T’s. For Paul Satterley’s men, there’s a top two spot on the line. The next three weeks for the Navy Blue (Old Trinity, Uni Blues and Caulfield) can set up the final month of the year before the finals.
Mark Gnatt’s side has produced pieces of magic through the opening 11 rounds, have they got a few more rabbits to pull out of the hat? They’ll need their best performance yet if they’re to stop the rage of the Blues. All of a sudden, there is more than just chit-chat around Collegians. It’s turned into a bull’s roar. Now fifth on the table and equal with Old Xaverians with wins and losses. This Saturday, against the modern-day rivals St Kevin’s will they produce an upset for the ages?
They won’t mind for a moment that the attention is on teams other than themselves, I’d wager that’s the way Satts likes it. Even if they wanted to go under the radar. It’s impossible if you’re Old Xaverians. A double bye still doesn’t dismiss that considering the battle scars they walked off St Kevin’s College with.. They’ll have had 21 days to think about “what if ‘’ after going down a fortnight ago.
Three games ago there were questions around the form of the group, the challenges of the depth, injuries to key players. Now, they’re back from the double bye, hellbent on keeping their momentum rolling and featuring in September is more than just a pipedream for the Purple Army. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Many St Bernard’s people will tell you that outside of finals. Beating Xav’s at Toorak Park is the home and away game that means the most to them. If you’re reading this thinking Uni Blues will want to respond to what’s happened in the past fortnight, the Xav’s mafia will be just as headstrong in putting to bed how they started Round 11. In Xav’s last three losses this season, they’ve been held to 7 goals. The following week, they’re averaging 31.5 scoring shots. Paul Groves’ defence better prepare themselves for an onslaught with the ball coming down with pace and frequently. Prior to the bye, Caulfield Grammarians made it three wins from their previous four matches. Simon ‘Punchy’ Williams gave some home-truths about his team on the VAFA’s For the Love of the Game podcast. No doubt, he’s gone about using this 2-week window as a chance to build his side further into the season and through this winter grind. They will come against an Old Brighton team that dominated the Fields earlier in the year. And, coming off a shock loss themselves to Collegians. A Fields win can keep their slim, mathematical finals chances alive while the Tonners can keep themselves above Old Melburnians in second spot. It may well be the biggest game of the round that could shape the top four. The last time Old Brighton suffered back to back losses was Round 1 and Round 2 of the 2019 season. Greg Hutchison and his army of troops refuse to wilt in consecutive games. After a fortnight off, I daresay there’s 10 Premier teams with 220 refreshed warriors. But always be weary of the wounded warriors, for they have nothing to lose in Round 12. 2 o’clock Saturday, all the off-field talk stops, and the on-field action captures our attention.

Double Double Toil and Trouble, The Premier B Cauldron Has Started to Bubble The Jackers have continued to develop their brand of footy as the season has progressed, displaying exceptional leadership and have strongly contested some of the top sides. AJAX will head to Brunswick Street Oval to play Fitzroy with hopes to solidify their position in the top 4. After 11 Rounds of footy, Fitzroy have found 5th on 20 points. Fitzroy are known to finish the year off strong and with a tough run home, they will have to cause an upset or two if they are any chance to play finals in September.
After a two-week break, teams are returning to the track preparing to make the most of what is left of the home and away season. Will Saturday’s game be in thunder, lightning or rain? Let’s take a look and see how teams sit from the top of the table to the bottom of the food chain. As it stands, the ladder currently sees the minor premiers in The Uni Blacks clutching their crown with Beaumaris following closely. Both teams presently sit on 36 points with a healthy percentage from The Uni Blacks keeping them in front.
A relatively inconsistent year from De La Salle has caused them to fall to 6th on the ladder, sharing a score of 12 points with St Bedes/ Mentone. Their midfield has continued to dominate, setting the tone across the ground however, cohesion amongst the lines has proved a challenge this year. Similarly, St Bedes/ Mentone have remained resilient around the grounds, including their notable victory over Old Haileybury in round 5, begging the question as to whether finals are still on the cards? We certainly can’t discount either of these teams just yet, they may be the Great Birnam Wood on their way to the top.
So, to the question on everyone’s minds, can The Sharks slay the kings? Round 12 sees Beaumaris face off against The Uni Blacks at Banksia reserve. The last time these two met The Blackers defeated Beauy by 74 points with The Uni Blacks taking firm control of the momentum of this game. Beaumaris’ defensive structure is extremely tough to break, proving a great challenge for The Uni Black’s forwards. It is vital The Blackers return to the “team first” brand of footy they displayed earlier this year if they are a chance to bounce back from their round 11 loss.
Looking to the bottom of the table, Williamstown and Old Carey are currently on 8 and 4 points respectively. No doubt it will be interesting to see how these two teams finish off the next few weeks with hopes of clutching a few more wins on the board. With the two sides facing off in round 12, Old Carey will be raring to go, looking to settle the score as Williamstown hope to turn the tide of their season, threatening to climb up the ladder. Only when the battle’s lost and won will we know who will come out on top.
There’s blood on the hands of Old Haileybury after triumphing over The Uni Blacks. This side have been strong contenders all year and will welcome the bye and subsequent 4 points with open arms. Will 3 weeks off halt their momentum, or will Old Haileybury come back with vengeance in round 13? Old Haileybury and AJAX both sit on 24 points, making the next few rounds equally pivotal for these sides.

Monash the new clubhouse leader while Rovers win ugly Premier C Men’s has a new ladder leader, with Monash Blues edging ahead of Hampton Rovers on percentage, following a demolition of Preston.
UHS-VU continued their late-season resurgence with their second successive victory over Old Mentonians. The University boys started the game running on top of the ground, building on the confidence gained from their win over Marcellin and kicking three of the four goals in the first quarter. They only kicked two more in the second term, but the defence held up brilliantly in keeping the Panthers goalless. A 26-point half time deficit is never an easy situation to deal with, but these Old Mentonians boys are made of strong stuff and reduced the damage to a mere five points turning for home. The last quarter was a tough and desperate affair, as the closeness of the scores dictated, but UHS-VU are now enjoying the winning feeling and refused to be denied. They held firm to kick three goals to two in the final quarter and complete a twelve point win. Harrison Rocke and Brandon Jackson kicked two goals each for UHS-VU, for whom Ben Dimattina was brilliant on the day. Tom Morecroft ploughed a lone farrow up forward for Old Mentonians with four goals. Tom McCarthy continued his excellent season, being best afield for the Panthers.
Mazenod overtook Old Ivanhoe on the points table with a hard-fought win away from home. The key to this match was that Mazenod took greater advantage of the breeze to kick eleven goals to the scoring end where their opponents only kicked six. The home team had the benefit first but only came into quarter time with a five point lead. Mazenod took control early in the second term and did not relinquish the momentum. A three goal half time lead was only diminished by six points by the last change, and Mazenod were untroubled in kicking five goals to two in the final quarter, coasting to a 27 point victory. Jack Caspersz was clinical in front of goal for Mazenod, kicking four goals with Shaun Lovell best afield. Sam Wilcox was Old Ivanhoe’s best, with Michael Mitris kicking three goals for the home side. Old Geelong were unstoppable in the second half against Ormond, turning a solid half-time lead into a thirteen goal demolition. The general play in the first half was fairly even, albeit that Old Geelong created the better chances for themselves, which was reflected in the fact that they kicked 8.1 to Ormond’s 4.6 at the half. It was after the main break when Old Geelong took complete control. Four goals to one in the third term extended the lead to 37 points turning for home, and any hope that Ormond had of a comeback was quickly extinguished in the final term. Old Geelong banged on eight goals to two at the other end, with a final 77 point margin just the fillip Old Geelong needed leading into the big end-of-season matches. Chris Hatzis and John Simson kicked five goals each for Old Geelong, but it was Jack Anderson that ran the show on the day. Mason Martinez gave his best for Ormond, for whom Zach Benson and Matt Hine kicked two goals each.
Sometimes the best sides need to win ugly. The Hampton Rovers were hampered by six forced changes from the previous week’s side, and whilst they were the better side around the ground and deserved the win over Marcellin accordingly, it was in front of goal that they struggled. Early in the day when the match was there to be won, opportunities were wasted meaning that Marcellin took a seven point lead to the main break despite having three fewer scoring shots. Ben Marron dominated in the Hampton forward line in the third term, but converted only one of his five shots as the Rovers continued their inaccurate day. To their credit, the Marcellin pressure played a big part in Hampton’s problems, but the ability and system of Hampton Rovers allowed them to grind out a fifteen point win. Marron finished with two goals for the Rovers, with James Prosser and Joel Melnjak strong. Lachlan Rush contributed three goals to the Marcellin cause, with Pat Howe kicking two and Daniel Cullinan their best.
The embattled Preston Bullants were no match for the rampaging Monash Blues in a one-sided contest at Frearson Oval. The match was probably done as a contest at quarter time as Preston were held goalless, and by half time the margin had doubled to eight goals. To their credit, the Preston boys, as they have done in most weeks, kept their heads up and competed as best they could. They kicked three goals to Monash’s five in the third term, but the floodgates opened in the final quarter with the Blues kicking nine goals to the Bullants’ one to complete a 111 point rout. Nick Darling continued his good form with six goals, and best-on-ground Zac Ledin registered four goals for the Blues. Ethan Lowe was Preston’s sole multiple goal kicker with two, whilst Luke Green flew the flag admirably for them. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The design represents the Preston community and PBAFC, and has been made possible by the sponsorship from local businesses. The triple-header at Ruthven Reserve will feature a smoking ceremony, welcome to country and a guest speaker at the luncheon.
Mecwacare Masters make it a day to remember The Mecwacare Masters Footy Festival gave us all the thrills, spills, laughter and excitement we were expecting and anticipating in the build-up to the inaugural day. The day was a success mainly to the efforts of VAFA Club Development Manager, Sean Walker who worked tirelessly in getting all 4 participating clubs to agree to playing at Elsternwick Park. De La Salle defeated Oakleigh in the first match, with St Kevin’s pipping the Marcellin Bald Eagles in the second match, but Masters Footy was the real winner on the day!

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Tahlia Meier (Melbourne University Women) The VAFA congratulates Tahlia Meier on being nominated the Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star this week. Tahlia was named amongst the best as Melbourne University Women’s triumphed over West Brunswick on the weekend by 6 points to cement their spot on the top 4.
What the club said: Tahlia came to us at the conclusion of the Western Bulldogs FC’s VFLW season, after connecting with other MUWFC players who were training alongside her throughout the VFLW season. Tahlia has made an immediate impact on the club and her teammates, with her strong work ethic evident at training and on game day. Although one of the youngest members of our squad, Tahlia is an incredibly experienced player, having commenced playing footy at age 10. She has represented the Greater Western Victoria Rebels in the NAB league competition, donned the Vic Country jersey in the 2021 NAB AFLW U19 Championships, and played 11 games of VFLW across the past 2 years. Of her 4 games with us so far this season, she has been in the best on 3 occasions, and has been regarded as a valued member of the team on and off the track. We love having her as part of the club and can’t wait to see her continue to develop across the coming years – one to watch!
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Oscar White (Kew Football Club) The VAFA congratulates Oscar White from the Kew Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 12 Rising Star.
What the club said: Oscar joined the Bears in 2022 and has had an immediate impact on our Men’s Senior side. He has good speed, a strong goal sense, and he works hard defensively. Coach Ian Aitken described Oscar as very coachable, and hungry to learn. Oscar’s team-first mentality means he is wellrespected by the group, and fits in well. At only 17 years of age, the Club is excited to watch Oscar develop as a person and footballer in the Brown and Gold.

When it rains, it pours Turning our attention to the matchup between second placed PEGS and third placed Glen Eira, it truly was a display of what we could come to expect come finals time. The game stayed within a few kicks leading into the final change, with PEGS holding the advantage at every break. Coming into the final quarter the class of this 10-1 outfit proved too much for the grade risers of Glen Eira, running out 25-point winners in what truly is a big win in the context of having one over their rivals come the end of the year.
Last week was a case of some of the biggest wins in the division being spread across the board, which we saw in one particular contest resurface this week as the top 4 again gets a shakeup. Starting things off with the upset of the round, the now 4-8 Therry Penola took on fringe top 4 competitor Oakleigh and managed to go home as big winners with the four points. For Oakleigh, they have now lost the last two games to teams below them, and without the forward presence of their main goal scorer in Aaron Cloke, it appears they are struggling to win football matches. For Therry Penola, it was a controlled performance, with Kane O’Halloren keeping to his recent goal kicking form adding another 5 on Saturday, to lead his team out 33 point winners in an effort that sees them climbing up the ladder and pushing teams to compete at their best.
Next up was a hard-fought win by a top 4 contender in Prahran Assumption, as they took on the men from Old Peninsula. Peninsula can compete, and on this day, they decided to really take it up to their stronger counterparts of Prahran, managing to hold the lead leading into the final change. Despite a day of consistent goal kicking from Lachie Enno, it wasn’t enough to hold out a fast-finishing Prahran, who managed to snatch the 4 points with a slender 15 point win. Although a run down from behind win, it was a good confidence booster for a side only a mere 0.5 wins out of the top 4.
Moving on to the biggest winning margin of the season, Old Camberwell kept the foot on the gas to bury the struggling St Mary’s Salesian by a whopping 214 points. For Old Camberwell, they had more multiple goal scorers than I’ve had hot dinners, piling on an incredible 21 goals 8 behinds in the second half, whilst at the same time keeping St Mary’s scoreless. It was a dominant display by a team that truly were struggling at the beginning of this season and are now just sitting 1.5 wins out of the top 4 with a huge percentage boosting win. They look dangerous.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Our final game of the round was between ladder leaders Kew and Whitefriars, who currently sit second last with a 1-11 record. This was as easy as you like for the men out of the eastern suburbs, commanding and dominating the lead from the get-go, being on top and in charge at every change. Whilst the first half was only 4 goals the difference, Kew did what they needed to snatch the 4 points and sit atop of the ladder once again through 12 rounds.

Don’t discount the Purple, Blue and Green monster In the tightest match of the round Power House came home with a wet sail but couldn’t close down Bulleen Templestowe falling short by 10 points. Leading at half-time by three points, the Ants pressed home six majors in the Premiership term to take an unassailable lead.
Old Paradians are turning up the heat on their counterparts in Division 2 after an emphatic performance over the weekend against MHSOB. The Unicorns seem to be on a slippery slope after losing their fourth match from the last five matches. Five goals to zero in the second quarter saw the margin sit at 48 points for the Paradians, reeled into 42 by the final siren. Alexander Ouzas (4), and Anthony Cafari (3) were the main culprits in front of goal. Cafari takes his season tally to 27 from 9 games. While David Huntly was named the best player on the ground.
Paul Italiano (3) and Jack Cowell (3) proved to be a handful in front of goal for the Power House defenders. Terry Harisiou takes the best on ground honours for the Ants. Ben Circosta continues his goal-a-game average and another few votes in the charge for the club best and fairest.
Ashan Wijayakumara (3) continued his stay in the top two of the sharpshooters table with 35. Old Parade have now won 7 games in a row and showing the strong form that was expected of them in the preseason. MHSOB have got a bit of work to do now that they’re outside the top 4.
It was a slow start for Ivanhoe AFC in their 58 point win over Aquinas. Held to just one goal in the opening term, they added 16 majors to six from quarter time to show their strength. Ash Close charged to the top of the sharpshooters table with 8-majors in his first game for a fortnight while Michael Doyle produced his best performance of the season.
Yarra Old Grammarians have had a great fortnight claiming their second win in a row. This time, 57 points over Manningham Cobras. The win gives the Bushrangers a 1-game buffer on the Cobras in the fight to stave off relegation.
Aquinas have now met three of the top four in the last month, and come up against Old Paradians as their next challenge. It’s been a good opportunity for the coaching staff to get a gauge on where they’re at against the best in the competition.
Simon Yeo, in his first senior outing for Yarra kicked six majors and was the focal point. Rory Chipman was his noble sidekick, adding four of his own. Manningham’s David Tokatliyan made it three consecutive weeks where he kicked three goals and was named the best player for the Cobras.
Last time Brunswick and West Brunswick met, it went right down to the wire. After the siren in fact. This time around, the Magpies weren’t letting this slip from their grasp. Holding out Brunswick by 22 points. Inaccuracy was the main tale of the tape for both sides but it was Stuart Henshall (3), and Billy Irving (2) who managed to have more nouse in front of the sticks than their cross-suburb counterparts.

Going into the bye, the win has kept West Brunswick on the heels of Ivanhoe AFC at the top of the table. Old Paradians have shot up to third with their recent run of strong form. Brunswick are calling out for the bye, in the early part of the year it was a case of ‘how far’ now it’s a matter of ‘hang on’ having lost their last three matches. It’s going to be a fascinating run home when footy resumes in a fortnight from now. While the Magpies are flying, don’t discount the purple, blue and green monster.

Hawks still flying, Cobras still striking Elsternwick have suffered another loss, this time at the hands of Parkside at Pitcher Park by eight points. The Wickers took it Red Devils, taking the lead by a small margin at the first break, before the home side kicked into gear. With one point in it at the beginning of the final term, it was the away side’s inability to score that cost them. Shane Doherty (3), Samuel Gilfedder (2), and Matthew Soligo were Parkside’s multiple-goalkickers, while Ian Romano was their best. For Elsternwick, Matt Ball kicked three goals and Julian Yeatman two, but it was Dylan Convery who took top honours.
With the second league-wide bye coming after the weekend, the teams in Division 3 Men’s have given us a lot to stew over in the break to come. Hawthorn took said bye into consideration, kicking enough goals to cover two games and breaking the 200 threshold against the unfortunate Westbourne Grammarians, while Emmaus St Leo’s have slipped out of the top 4 given their own bye and due to some winners of the round. Canterbury have added another win to their ever-growing list, taking down North Brunswick at Allard Park by 46 points. It was a case of missed opportunities for both sides, with the Cobras missing scoring chances all game but the Bulls being unable to capitalise on the mistakes, with the home side lucky the final margin wasn’t more. The away side had eight individual goalkickers, with Ryan Murray, James Saliakos, and John Nicolopoulos all kicking two majors each. Mark Collins was best on. For the losing side, Patrick Notaro (2) was the only multiple-goalkicker, and Andrew Ramzy (1) their best.
In their annual WINGS match, Hawthorn have had fifteen individual goalkickers to beat the Westbourne Grammarians by 158 points at Rathmines Road Reserve. Nine goals right out of the gate painted the picture early for the Hawks, before going into the main break having already surpassed 100 points. It was rather the usual happenings for the Warriors, however they managed to get on the board in a way they haven’t done consistently, finishing the game 8.7. For the home side, William Meehan (8) and Justin Raiti (5) starred in front of goal, while Jack Wilson, Aaron Downie, Jack Kenny, Charlie Boots, and Luke Piccolo all kicked two each. Joshua Wain was best on. The away side had seven individual goalkickers for their seven goals, while Ben Stoios took top honours.
South Melbourne Districts have cemented their spot on top of the ladder with a 19-point win over Richmond Central at Lindsay Hassett Oval. It was an arm-wrestle all day but the Bloods started on front foot, taking an eight-point buffer into the main break. Ultimately, while still in it, the Snakes could never get close enough to clinch the win. It was the Dufficy Show on the scoreboard, with Michael (3) and Oliver (2) getting their team over the line, while Samuel McGinn (2) continued his form in front of goals, but it was Thomas Foley who took top honours. For the losing side, James Rudolph was the only multiplegoalscorer with two, and Jack Baxter their best on.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
When VAFA footy returns, Emmaus St Leo’s will have had two weeks off to assess how they beat North Brunswick, when they take to Bennettswood Reserve. Every game is important for the Animals, who run the risk of not playing finals if they don’t get more wins on the board.

Hawthorn are on the rise once again and will face the in-form team of the division when they travel to Lindsay Hassett Oval and face South Melbourne Districts. Despite a less-than-ideal first half of the season, the Hawks have steadied and look set to compete for the coveted fourth spot on the ladder. Westbourne Grammar awaits Richmond Central, who face a brutalised Westbourne Grammarians outfit. Both teams suffered losses in round twelve and will be looking to use this game as an opportunity to get back on the winner’s list. Canterbury Sportsground is the destination for Parkside where they will take on a Canterbury side going from strength to strength. There were wins for both teams and it’ll be top priority to continue that, while for the Red Devils their finals hopes are pinned on every game. Elsternwick have their second bye of the year.

The fight for fourth is wide open in Division 4 St John’s faced off against Eley Park with a win significantly benefiting both teams’ seasons. The JOCs got off to the perfect start kicking seven goals whilst keeping the Sharks to two, taking a 31-point lead into the first break. The second quarter saw inaccurate kicking from both sides with a combined eight behinds. The JOCs however were able to build on their lead going into the major break with a 43-point lead.
This round saw all the favourites win in convincing fashion. The weekend’s average winning margin was 65 points. A small breakaway group is starting to form at the top of the ladder, making the battle for fourth (currently held by Masala) even more interesting. The round commenced with a 2nd vs 7th clash as Swinburne hosted Box Hill North in the clubs inaugural Pride Game. Box Hill North on the lookout for their first win in season 2022. An even game is what we saw in the first quarter but it was the Razorbacks that got off to a narrow lead of two points. Swinburne then turned on the jets in the second quarter kicking six goals whilst only allowing a single goal from the Dees to increase their lead out to 38 points.
The third quarter saw the JOCs open the game up more as they were able to add on an additional four goals whilst also keeping the Sharks to a single goal pushing out the lead to 63 points. The fourth quarter saw the Sharks make a late push to narrow the margin but inaccurate kicking only led to one goal from five scoring shots. In the end, it was the JOCs that won the game convincingly by 80 points, in the process making them a dark horse come finals time.
Box Hill made a third-quarter push as they added on three goals whilst only conceding a single goal from the Razorbacks to bring the Swinburne margin down to 28 points. If the Demons could replicate their third-quarter efforts then the Razorbacks could have been in trouble. However, it was not to be as Swinburne ran away kicking five final quarter goals and leaving with a 55-point win.
The best players for the JOCs were Michael Horton, Brendan Ash and Sam Gaitley. The best for the Sharks were Luke Wakeling, Shannon Blewitt and Jack Craig. Michael Horton was the major goal scorer for the JOCs with 5 goals, Ethan Hope (4) and Jason Naffa (3) were also big contributors. For the Sharks, their only multiplegoal scorer was Jacob Baddock who kicked two.
The best for the Razorbacks were Aidan Vesty, Jed Toner and Zachary Lassey. The best for the Demons were Peter Cassidy-Marsh, Sean Donovan and Findlay Hanna. Swinburne pair Aidan Vesty and Trent Ryan combined for half of the Razorbacks’ goals with four goals each. Declan Watts and Joseph Zambelli were also contributors with two goals each. Sam Kenna kicked 2 goals for the Dees with other contributors including David Edwards (1) and Jordan Gasparini (1).
St Johns will now take on Masala in what will be a close contest. Eley Park now takes on an equally tough challenge in Swinburne. The round concluded with an exciting twilight fixture between La Trobe and Masala. The Trobers got off to the perfect start getting an early lead over the Tigers kicking five goals and getting out to a 30-point lead. Masala was able to lift their defensive stocks in the second quarter however the Trobers still found a way to break through adding on three goals whilst keeping the Tigers to a goal.
Swinburne will now play a struggling Eley Park side and will look to put more pressure on La Trobe. Box Hill North will now play Albert Park in what should be an exciting matchup.

MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
James Course (Ivanhoe AFC)
50
Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates star defender James Course on his 50th game in Round 12. ‘Coursey’, son of Ivanhoe Team of the Century legend Tony Course and brother of teammate Luke Course, joined the Hoers in 2018 and had an immediate impact as a versatile and mobile tall. James was a recipient of the club’s best team player award in his first season. He was promoted to captain in 2019 – a position he shared last year before relinquishing the role this season. A tough and reliable defender who is strong overhead, James anchors a miserly Ivanhoe defence that has been integral to the Hoers’ success in D2 this season. A modest and affable bloke off the field, James is held in the highest regard as ‘The Rock of Ivanhoe’. Rock on Coursey! You’re killing them.
Lucy Morley (Old Scotch)
50
Congratulations to Lucy Morley on being the first woman in the history of the club to reach 50 games for Old Scotch. Lucy joined the club in 2018, the Old Scotch Stars foundation year. Lucy has played in the Women’s 1st XVIII right through her time at the club. Lucy was an integral part of the Women’s Division 1 2019 premiership team and we wish her all the best on reaching this significant milestone.
Andrew Ramzy (North Brunswick)
50
Well to Andrew on reaching this milestone. Andrew is a Premiership player and Best and Fairest at the Bullpen. A determined in and under player he never shirks a contest and is also a regular goalkicker.
Patrick Notaro (North Brunswick)
100
Congratulations to Patty for reaching this milestone. It has taken him 10 years to reach for various reasons. Patty was Captain of North Brunswick’s premiership in 2018. A player with terrific hands his leading and marking and straight kicking have made him a standout player. Everyone at Allard Park say well done.
Patrick Long – Monash Blues (150 Games)
150
Huge congratulations to Patrick ‘Neville’ Long on bringing up 150 games for the Monash Blues last weekend. Since debuting in 2011 Nev has become a true Blues Twos legend. Described by his peers as a utility, swingman, stalwart, coach and spiritual leader, he has dominated forward, back and in the ruck, at 3rds, Reserves and Senior level over his career. Nev is blessed with a high football IQ, and he attacks the game like his footballing idols - Glenn Archer, Anthony Stevens & Mick Martyn. Arguably, Pat is the best MBFC footballer to come out of the Greater Bendigo region in the last 15 years. Traditionally known as a power athlete, in 2022 we have witnessed a rebranded, leaner ‘Festival’ Nev patrolling opposition back 50s. Well done Longy!
Luke Baird - St Bernards (200 Games)
200
All at ‘the pit’ salute Luke Baird as he lines up for his 200th VAFA game this week. A St Bernards Junior, Luke progressed through Under 19s to mix Ressies and Thirds footy since way back in 2007. Since then Luke has become a mainstay of the Thirds sides for well over a decade. A great clubman on and off field Luke has become an important part of the fabric of our club. Well done Luke!

Melbourne Uni’s win over West Brunswick sees them now eyeing third spot on the ladder It was fourth versus fifth on the ladder when Melbourne Uni took on West Brunswick, the game also marked Melbourne Uni’s inaugural First Nations round. There was a pre game smoking ceremony and the players wore a specially designed guernsey to observe the round. No side had control of the game early on but it was Melbourne Uni who saw the first action on the scoreboard, taking advantage of a fumble by the defence of West Brunswick. Both teams were playing with high intensity, there was tackling pressure coming from all sides on the ball carrier. As the game went on the even contest continued, as no team could really break through the others defence. The teams showed why they are matched on the ladder, trading possessions of the ball with no clear winner of the contest. When someone did get the ball it was short strings of possession that followed. Scoring shots were also hard for either team, with just five scoring shots in total going into half time. In the third quarter the game still looked like it could go either way at any point. There were moments in play where West Brunswick looked to be on top of Melbourne Uni as their pressure would go up and they could find some space in attack. It was West Brunswick who broke through to get their much needed first goal and keep them in the game. Only a few minutes would go by and Melbourne Uni got the return goal to set up for an exciting final term. Melbourne Uni didn’t want to let this game go, and set up a defensive player along the backline to take intercept marks, which kept the momentum of play with Melbourne Uni. One more goal from Melbourne was enough for them to get the victory in a thrilling finish.
bringing some congested passages of play. Kew were able to break away at times and capitalise on mistakes made by St Marys across the ground. Kew were in control of the possession throughout the game but struggled to have an impact on the scoreboard in the first half of the game. In the third quarter Kew lifted their intensity and took command of the game. Their attack went up and the possession was all their way and offered St Marys no chances. The high work rate for Kew paid off with a three goal quarter to give them a comfortable lead going into the final term. Kew continued to keep the play locked down in the final term, continuing to deny St Marys any possession of the ball. Kew kicked another three goals in the last term to get a 59 point win, defensively they were also very strong keeping St Marys scoreless for the whole game. There was plenty of action early on between Marcellin and Old Xaverians with the ball moving all around the ground. The teams were looking very evenly matched which resulted in fast paced play with the ball turning over often. Marcellin had the better end of the scoreboard with three goals in the first quarter, after some strong defensive plays that resulted in turnovers. Old Xaverians were struggling to keep up with Marcellin in the second quarter, where Marcellin were at the fall of the ball at contests. There were times when Old Xaverians were able to get some clean attack but Marcellin were strong defensively and were spoiling the momentum quickly. For Marcellin the second quarter is where they should have put the game away, but struggled with accuracy at goals and missed on all six of their attempts. After halftime Old Xavs stepped up their intensity, with some strong defensive pressure that kept the ball away from Kew and resulted in an early goal that got momentum swinging their way. From here Marcellin had a fight on their hands and worked through to get a goal of their own and push momentum back their way. The final term saw the return of the Marcellin from earlier in the game, upping their defensive pressure to keep the ball away from Old Xaverians. In attack they found space on the ground making some end to end plays and kicking two goals to take out the match by 31 points.
It was all Kew early on in the game against St Marys, with Kew playing a strong attacking game which had St Marys on the defensive from the first bounce. Conditions weren’t great and both teams struggled to keep clean possession of the ball and get a good run on possession. Despite this Kew were the ones who kept the ball for most of the quarter, with St Marys struggling to get the ball moving when they had possession. The second quarter started the same way with Kew winning the ball at most contests. St Marys were delivering some strong pressure on the ball holder, restricting the movement of Kew and THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

St Kevin’s got the scoring off early in their game with Caulfield Grammarians showing the Caulfield backline that they would be busy. After the early goal Caulfield made some strong plays out of the midfield and squared up the ledger, showing St Kevin’s this wasn’t going to be an easy game for them. In circumstances that are unusual for St Kevin’s, Caulfield kept control of the game for much of the first term. It was a tight contest to begin the second quarter but it wasn’t long before St Kevin’s took hold and scored two goals in a row. Caulfield were taking strong marks in their backline, but St Kevin’s were picking the kicks off and using the turnovers to gain possession and score. Attack was rare for Caulfield in the second with St Kevin’s holding them back and stopping any advance into the Caulfield attacking 50. It was only poor kicking from St Kevin’s that kept Caulfield in the game at half time. Caulfield showed some food passages of play and controlled the game for part of the third quarter. It was St Kevin’s who again made the impact on the scoreboard, through their smart use of the ball kicking overhead and into space. The final term saw St Kevin’s change tactics and play a more defensively minded game to protect their lead. Caulfield broke through to get their third goal of the game and did enough defensively to keep St Kevin’s to just one point in the final term. It wasn’t enough to stop St Kevin’s from getting the win. The loss for Caulfield now sees them in a fight for third place on the ladder with Melbourne Uni.
