SEASON 2023 - July 22
‘Band Together’ for TAC Road Safety Round
Victoria’s football and netball communities will rally behind road safety this week, donning blue armbands to honour people killed on Victorian roads and show a commitment to reducing road trauma.
The TAC & AFL Victoria Road Safety Round will run statewide July 21 -23, seeing thousands of people from country and suburban football and netball leagues ‘Band Together’, wearing blue armbands to honour all lives impacted by road trauma and to promote road safety.
Players, coaches, volunteers and supporters from more than 1000 AFL Victoria-affiliated clubs will wear the bespoke armband, which features a QR code linking people to an online hub of stories from people impacted by road trauma.
“Road safety is so important and relevant to every Victorian and with community football players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters spending considerable time driving – Road Safety Round presents the ideal platform to convey a powerful message.” - Head of AFL Victoria, Ben Kavenagh.
This year, 165 people have been tragically killed on Victorian roads – a 28% increase on the 129 lives lost at this time in 2022. Road deaths in regional areas are a continued concern, with 94 fatalities this year compared to 73 at the same time in 2022. The number of people aged 21-to-39 who have died on the roads has risen by more than 20.
“Any life lost on Victorian roads is one too many. The impact of these tragedies on local communities across our state is devastating. Road Safety Round is an opportunity for clubs to honour those impacted by road trauma and have important conversations with their members about the role they play in keeping our roads safe.” - Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.
St Kevin’s Old Boy’s Mitch Wallis is the face of the ‘Band Together’ campaign in 2023. Within the ‘Band Together’ campaign Mitch shares the impact road trauma has had on the father of two and his family, after his mother-in-law Katie passed away after being struck by a vehicle in 2022.

Round 13, lucky for some.
Who will benefit from the Big V bye?
Here we go. Lucky, or unlucky (round) number 13. Off the back of the representative bye round this weekend has the potential to lock away or open up the top four, and to spice up the relegation battle.
22 VAFA representatives willed themselves to every contest on Saturday. For the 19 playing in William Buck Premier their coaches watched on with pride, but similarly through the gaps of their fingers as the contest became tighter and tighter and then longer (extra time) as the afternoon went on.
Will these VAFA warriors back up again this weekend?
The Old Xaverians will be without their captain in Marcus Stavrou as they face the ladder leaders, Collegians Landing awkwardly on his shoulder in the rock hard centre of Elsternwick Park on Saturday will see him on the sidelines. The red and black mafia will be cutting the phone line that connects Footscray VFL to Charlie MacIsaac after his six goal haul in the Big V.
Through injuries, and travel the Xaverians haven’t been able to get their midfield trio of Stavrou, Robinson and Symeopoulos on the park at the same time this year. A fortnight ago they were held to five goals for the day against University Blacks.
Collegians can just about shut the door on the Old Xaverians season. Six wins in a row by an average of 58 points.
A minimal injury list, a strong formline at home, Dave Mirra missed against Caulfield, rested himself from the Big V game and has primed his body for a big tilt in the final six weeks of the season. Luke McCleary made the bold decision to pull himself from the Big V team to get his own body right. Sam Sofrinidis and Kenny Ong will spend the week in the recovery chamber. Sofrinidis excited to get back into a long-sleeve, while the King is set to get back to his version of Buckingham Palace - The Harry Trott Oval.
Jared Rivers’ side will leave no stone unturned in their chase for the premiership. It’s been 11 years since the Lions tasted success, ironically against the Old Xaverians.
If Old Scotch follow suit of Collegians, then they too can end the season for Old Brighton and shut the door on anyone from outside the top four sneaking their way in.
However, as raised on this weeks For the Love of the Game podcast by our esteemed co-hosts (namingly Presidents of opposition clubs), the Cardinals had six representatives playing the minutes in the Big V. Old Brighton had none.
Ryan Valentine, James Tarrant, Henry Brown, Aiden Franetic, Brodie Easton and Charlie Cormack all were significant in the Vics pulling off the great escape. Can they back up again this weekend?
A lot of the energy will be focused on them, but overall for Old Scotch, the last month has been tough reading. One win from four matches, two games totalling six goals. Mark Gnatt has had the bye to identify the areas they need to focus on. The next three matches will determine the lay of the land for the Cardinals.
Dan Donati, the master coach has remained positive in his outlook, knowing the nature of VAFA footy from his playing days with the Old Xaverians. That positivity may noticeably diminish further if another from the Tonners even considers suggesting unavailability because of Europe.
There’s no two ways about it for the side that reached last year’s Grand Final, this is a must win game. They all are from here. Having lost five of the last six matches, they’re in the middle of the table.
It’s a favourable run home for the Tonners, but relying on that alone won’t be enough.
Everytime St Kevin’s and University Blues meet, it always feels like there’s more than four points on the line.
In 2019 it was Grand Final day, it took until 2022 for a Grand Final rematch. On that day Guy Martyn had Uni Blues colours on. Earlier this year, the Blues held on for a gutsy three point win. This weekend is a genuine 8-point game. A Blues win puts a two game gap on the reigning premiers. A St Kevin’s win gives both sides nine wins each.
The last time the Uni Blues won at the TH King Oval, Round 15, 2016. But, the formline suggests they’re better placed to compete at a venue that’s proven questionable in the past. The 94 point loss to Collegians, amongst a smattering of strong performances indicates an aberration more than a genuine form issue.
Marty Gleeson has twice left the ground in three weeks, limping and wincing in pain on his right knee. Twice returned to the field minutes later as if nothing had happened. He is a miraculous healer and will need to be at his miraculous best stopping Mitch Wallis, Paddy Kerr and Shaun Kennedy.
The midfield may have its work cut out for them, Luke Winter is hotter than the sun. There’s a plethora of brilliant midfielders in William Buck Premier. This young man is a cut above. His performance on Saturday in the Big V elevated his standing even further. Going forward and kicking goals.
The fight for relegation goes to new heights this weekend as Old Haileybury welcome Caulfield Grammarians around the corner to Princes Park.
Daniel Ward’s last month has been brilliant to watch. Buoyed by the performance of Brodie Steele in the Big V, likewise the return of Brede Seccull, it’s starting to turn in the right direction for the Bloods.
In the RSN Xtra2 Match of the Day, Old Haileybury will be looking to make it three from their last four matches. If they win, and Old Melburnians fall at the hands of University Blacks, they will move up to eighth spot on the table with five weeks to go.
Wardy’s men have the opportunity to seal the fate of Caulfield with victory. Whilst sitting with one win next to their name, a three game gap will feel almost insurmountable in the race of relegation.
They will come into the game with confidence knowing they beat them earlier in the year, Julian Dobosz is as tough a match up as any. Jack Ellwood and Jonno Nash will give four quarters of effort, and Oscar Roberts is down in defence marshalling the troops.
University Blacks are staring at four wins in a row this weekend against Old Melburnians who are looking at four losses in a row. The Blacks have been building into the season, chipping away each week. It was forecast heading into the second week of the season, Dale Bower has a team that can compete in William Buck Premier. Competing is what they were doing, winning is now becoming a habit. Twice they’ve beaten the Old Xaverians, a Sunday victory against St Kevin’s. Josh Steadman and Campbell Moorfield back from Big V duties, the two co-captains couldn’t be in any better touch.
Ben Harding will go from roving to Steadman as teammates, to roving to Steadman as the opposition. Maybe that will prove handy for Paul Satterley and the OM’s midfield.
First quarters have been an issue for OM’s, none from 12 in 2023. University Blacks have gone onto win every first quarter they’ve won. The last fortnight, they’ve kept the opposition goalless in the opening term.
This weekend pins the top six sides of the ladder against one another, the bottom four going toe-to-toe.
Should Uni Blacks win, Old Brighton and Old Xaverians both lose. Three teams will be locked in the middle of the table on six wins. The bottom three sides will be in a fight for their footballing lives, and the top four will almost be competing for the colour of their competing shorts in September.
Some teams and players will consider themselves lucky, others unlucky. That’s the beauty of Amateur footy.

Caulfield’s bubble burst but Kew stays ahead of the competition
Reigning premiers, St Kevin’s put an end to the winning streak of Caulfield Grammarians. Although SKOB were inaccurate with their kicking, their defence held strong, limiting Caulfield to only two behinds for the first three quarters of the game.
Catherine Stanton continued her strong form to be the best on ground, kicking four of SKOB’s five goals, whilst usual suspects Bree Doyle and Sarah Betts were also named in the best. On the other side, Chloe O’Malley kicked two goals to take her goal tally for the season to 14.
Following the bye due to the Big V game, Grammarians will come back the following weekend to play West Brunswick whilst St Kevin’s will play Coburg.
The Fitzroy vs Coburg game went down to the wire, and the Lions’ inaccuracy in front of goal nearly cost them the game. Kicking a poor 1.11 for the game, and winning off the back of behinds rather than goals, they had the opportunity to put the game away when they missed five shots on goal in the final quarter. Fitzroy on the other hand started the game off strong, kicking 1.2 in the first quarter.
Molly Tancred was best on for Fitzroy for the first time this season, whilst Kiana Minchin was Coburg’s best for the first time. In Round 13, Coburg have the tough challenge of hosting St Kevin’s, whilst Fitzroy will play Melbourne Uni. Both these games will feature in the Sunday timeslot.
Old Scotch produced a dominant performance over Melbourne Uni Women’s after a tough first quarter, with a dominant three-goal second quarter setting them up in a strong position to be in front for the rest of the game. It was one of the more accurate performances we have seen from a team this season, kicking 6.1 for the match.
Billie Holloway was impressive with three goals, but it was Sophie Anghie who performed the best. For Melbourne Uni, Frances Walsh was their best. Next up Melbourne Uni will host Fitzroy, whilst Old Scotch will play Kew in the match of the round.
Kew once again asserted their dominance as the biggest threat to SKOB in the premiership race, with a nine-point victory over fellow contenders Collegians. Whilst it wasn’t their most convincing game, Kew did enough to run out winners. Collegians were strong in the first quarter, however failed to score again for the rest of the match.
Georgia Harris kicked Collegians’ only goal, whilst Jenna Colwell was their best. Michaela Harding produced another strong performance for Kew, backing up last weekend’s best on ground performance against West Brunswick. Kew will host Old Scotch in a ladderdefining clash in Round 13, whilst Collegians will have an extended break with the bye to come following the Big V game.

The challengers to the Snowdogs are lining up
Round 12 was looking to be the turning point in the 2023 season for the Beaumaris Sharks. Going into the contest against St Bernard’s the Sharks were on a three-game losing streak and in danger of sliding further down the table.
Despite beating the Snowdogs by a point on the scoreboard, findings from VAFA HQ, in accordance with VAFA Rule 50, Beaumaris Football Club have played an ineligible player in Rounds 11 and 12 of the 2023 season. Accordingly, Beaumaris Football Club shall forfeit the four premiership points from those matches together with their ‘points for’ score in each of those matches. The opposition Clubs in Rounds 11 (St Bedes/Mentone) and 12 (St Bernards) are yet to determine whether they would like to include both scores from their respective match in their percentage.
At the time of writing, the Sharks remain in fourth spot, keeping Old Geelong outside the four on percentage.
Beaumaris Football Club have advised the VAFA that they will be appealing the decision.
St Bernard’s welcomes Old Geelong to the College while Beaumaris travels to Monash University with the intention of putting this fortnight behind them and getting on with the job that lies ahead of them.
After two straight losses Fitzroy returned to the winners list under the Friday night lights against Old Trinity. A cold winter’s night in July saw both sides evenly matched in the opening term before the Roys were able to eek out the momentum with nine goals to four from there.
Marcel Laidlaw was the pick of the bunch in front of goal kicking four majors. He was supported by Aidan Lambert who kicked three.
Alex Emery was the T’s best player, from six games this year he’s featured in Donald McDonald’s best players on four occasions. Harry Thompson, part of the Big V starting 18 continued his good form kicking a goal.
The loss leaves Old Trinity in seventh spot, two games outside the top four. With six games remaining in the season, Williamstown is the only side they’ll meet who sit below them on the table.
Fitzroy head back to Brunswick St Oval in Round 13, now a game behind St Bernard’s and will face AJAX with the aim to close the gap to square and maintain their spot in the top two.
After a terrific month of footy Williamstown CYMS suffered their first loss since round 7 at the hands of Old Geelong
Earlier this year, these sides played a thriller with the OG’s winning by five points. At quarter time this weekend it was in danger of blowing out. Old Geelong with 6.6.42 in the first term to open up a 30 point lead.
The CY’s wouldn’t be denied and whittled the margin back to 13 points at the final change.
The mountain was too big to climb as the OG’s recorded their seventh win of the season by 23 points. Luke Morfoot and Will Stephenson combined for seven goals as Harry Kol put together one of his best performances of the season.
Tane Roordink and was named the best player for the CY’s. They’ve won over a lot of fans in 2023, and will continue to make their presence known in Premier B for the remainder of 2023.
With six games remaining, they’re not completely safe from relegation just yet, but a win against De La Salle in Round 13 will certainly go a long way to helping the cause.
Old Geelong are on the doorstep of a Premier B finals campaign, Nathan Brown’s men have every right to dream, and believe it’s possible. St Bernard’s is the next assignment at the College after the bye.
St Bede’s / Mentone Tigers are quietly building their way back up the table. Beating AJAX by 65 points to make it four wins from their past five matches.
The Tigers sit equal with Old Geelong and Beaumaris at 7-5 with one third of the season remaining. After an even first term, the SBMT exploded in the second quarter to set up the victory with eight goals to open up a 45 point lead at the main change.
The margin grew from there after half-time with Caleb Lewis adding another four goals to his season tally. Michael Barnes helped himself to three majors and Jack Benhk kicked two in his first senior game since May.
Aaron Ostilly in his senior debut was the shining light for the Jackers and named the clubs best player on the ground. They’ll take on Fitzroy in a fortnight’s time. SBMT head back to Brindisi St, in what is Jane’s Match against Old Trinity.
De La Salle are in the same boat as the Tigers, four wins from their past five matches. After accounting for Monash Blues on Saturday, they’re sitting pretty in third spot with a one-game buffer on the chasing pack.
The margin could have been far greater at quarter time for the boys of the Dairybell. Kicking 3.10.28 to open proceedings.
They were able to straight up after that kicking 13.8 to 2.4 from quarter time adding a much-needed addition to their percentage that will help to keep them in the top four if they find themselves slipping.
Nathan Scollo and Adrian Indovino combined for eight goals up forward. Luke Healy was instrumental throughout the afternoon.
The two blues were unable to go with De La on their hometrack and found the going tough. Alex Bennett’s last month has been impressive, finding his way into the best players regularly.
Beaumaris travels to Monash Uni in a fortnight’s time. De La head bayside to tackle the CY’s in what should be a dingdong battle.

Round 12 of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition featured four exhilarating matches, with Aquinas OC, Old Yarra Cobras, Monash Blues, and Richmond Central all recording victories. Two teams, Aquinas OC and Old Yarra Cobras, emerged with convincing wins, while the other two matches were closely contested battles.
Aquinas OC delivered a dominant performance against Brunswick, prevailing by a comprehensive 52-point margin. From the opening bounce, Aquinas OC asserted their control over the match and showcased their scoring prowess.
Aquinas’ forward line proved to be unstoppable, with multiple goal scorers contributing to their commanding win. C. Schmidli and H. McLean led the charge with two goals each, while Y. Cook, S. Jones, N. Sanders, M. Dargan, and H. Spicer also made valuable contributions.
Despite their best efforts, Brunswick struggled to match the intensity and scoring power of Aquinas. They fought hard throughout the match, but were unable to overcome Aquinas OC’s relentless pressure.
Old Yarra Cobras delivered a commanding performance against Mazenod OC, prevailing by 52 points. The match showcased Old Yarra Cobras’ dominance and ability to control every aspect of the game.
Old Yarra Cobras established their dominance early, preventing Mazenod OC from scoring throughout the match. Their strong defensive efforts and relentless attacking pressure led to a comprehensive victory.
Monash Blues and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers engaged in a fierce battle, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination. In a low-scoring affair, Monash Blues emerged as the victors by 10 points.
Despite the low scoring, the match was a tightly contested affair, with both teams showcasing strong defensive structures and disciplined gameplay. Monash’ S. Barbagallo was a standout performer, kicking two crucial goals that played a pivotal role in their victory.
Richmond Central secured a hard-fought victory over North Brunswick in a low-scoring contest. Both teams displayed tenacious defence, resulting in a closely contested match.
North Brunswick started strongly, but Richmond Central managed to overturn the deficit and take control of the game. Despite the low scoring, the match remained fiercely competitive until the final siren.

Mazenod rattle the cage of the Wellers
A tight tussle opened proceedings in the top four battle between Mazenod and Old Camberwell.
Earlier this season these two sides played off in a close encounter, and the same set up was on the cards from early on in the piece.
The Wellers weren’t able to fully capitalise on the momentum they had garnered through the opening term, kicking 1.6.12 to the Nodders 1.0.6.
Mazenod were able to take the lead during the second term, and despite the afternoon remaining close, didn’t lose the lead from there. Holding on for a 2-point lead as the Wellers came at them late in the game.
Andrew Kovac was named the best player on the ground for Mazenod. Hayden Boyce kicked two of the five goals for the victors. Jack Kerr put in his best performance of the season for the Wellers.
When the footy returns after the bye, Old Camberwell will head to EE Gunn Reserve to tackle Ormond while Mazenod play host to PEGS.
PEGS’ 44-point victory over Old Carey keeps them half-a-game behind Old Camberwell in the top two.
An 11-point lead at half-time was extended to 38 points as the boys from Essendon powered away from the Panthers. Daniel Flaherty and Darby Scott combined for six goals of the 13 from the home side.
Harrison Hill was the best player for Old Carey on the day. The loss almost puts a line through the aspirations of Carey for this year’s finals campaign, however, stranger things have happened in footy.
PEGS have now won the last two and will have every intention of making it three in a fortnight’s time.
Parkdale Vultures thought they were in cruise control at three quarter time against Ormond. Twenty points ahead at the final change, the Monders turned the screws and gave them a real scare.
Held to just one behind, the Vultures were able to hold off the fast-finish from Ormond. That behind became more than just handy, resulting in the final margin of the contest.
From the eight goals kicked by the home team, Jai Elcock and Lachie Bailey kicked six of them between them. Both named amongst the best for Owen Lalor’s men.
Will McCartney has had a strong fortnight for the Monders. Along with Matt Oaten. Both players tried everything they could to assist their team in saluting on Saturday.
The Monders remain half a game ahead of Marcellin. Now three games behind the Rovers who produced their best win of the season to keep a gap on their arch-rivals.
An inspired performance from the green and gold, led by Clinton Young saw Hampton give Old Ivanhoe a reality check in the race to the finals.
In just his third game of the year, Young kicked three up forward, supported by another ex-AFL talent in Will Walker.
Old Ivanhoe went with the Rovers through the opening half, but were stunned from then on as the home side ran away with nine goals to four after the main change.
Lachy Celantano, Cam Carmeni and Hugo Garrow all played with maturity far beyond their match experience. Christian Carnovale, buoyed by his Big V selection, proved his standing as one of the best players in Premier C.
The Rovers will now have two weeks off to bask in this victory. Old Ivanhoe will be facing Marcellin when the footy returns.
As it stands, going into the representative bye, Old Ivanhoe has slipped to third on the table, Mazenod are clipping at their heels. Whilst the Division 1 grand finalists of 2022 remain the teams to chase down.

Representative Football
Representative footy returned with a bang on Saturday, with the senior VAFA men’s and women’s teams hosting the Perth Football League at Elsternwick Park.
First up, the Big V Senior Women’s side continued their winning ways, accounting for the PFL to the tune of 63 points. After a tight tussle in the opening term, Paul Groves’ ladies were able to take the ascendancy into the second quarter opening up a 35-point lead, keeping WA to one major in the first half.
The Big V Senior Men’s side followed, and what a contest it was! A drawn game, with a win for the Big V in extra time, as darkness descended on Elsternwick Park.
The Big V side, selected by coach Greg Hutchison put on one of the best displays of Amateur football against the PFL the game has ever seen. At full time, scores were locked at 104 apiece, with both sides kicking 1.1 in the first period of extra time, before the Big V finished strong to claim a 130-111 victory. Read both match reports and watch the highlights + full replays at VAFA.com.au

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Cadhla Schmidli (Aquinas OC)
The VAFA congratulates Cadhla Schmidli from Aquinas OC Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 12 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Cadhla is proving to be quite the all-rounder, with a strong 2-goal performance from the weekend earning themselves a spot in the best.
What the club said:
Cadhla has taken their game to a new level this season. Beginning the season across Half Back, Cadhla has spent the last month on the wing, where they have provided great run and carry to set up multiple scoring opportunities for others and getting on the end of a few themselves.
We are all very proud of Cadhla and the development shown this year.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Aaron Ostilly (AJAX)
The VAFA congratulates Aaron Ostilly from the AJAX Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 12. Aaron has moved around the field, playing a number of positions, however showed his versatility and resilience carrying his side in a tough loss from the weekend, being named best on ground.
What the club said:
Aaron has previously played a few games in our Thirds and Reserves side before making his Senior debut last weekend.
As well as being a talented cricket player playing in the Caulfield 1st XI, he loves his footy. He has a great attitude to football having risen through the ranks from thirds to reserves to seniors.
Aaron played as an on-baller and forward until this year where he was put at full back and has shown what he is capable of. Proving to be a versatile all-rounder, his go-get-it attitude and willingness to play where the team needs him makes him such a valuable player to our club and we can›t wait to see what the future holds for Aaron.
Kew survive a Bullants scare as Glen Eira make it a perfect dozen
The gap between Glen Eira and the rest of Division 1 continues to widen as we move into the final third of the home and away season.
The Gryphons prevailed in a hard fought contest against Old Peninsula. After a tight opening term, Glen Eira were able to open up an 18 point lead at half time, and kept the Pirates at bay from then on.
Sean Bass and Finn O’Donnell kicked six goals between them as a dynamic duo up forward whilst Ben Gillett played his best game of the season. The scoring machine of the Gryphons has been slowed in recent weeks however the defensive unit of the side has been the real feature of 2023.
Teams will be hard-pressed in the run to September to kick a winning score against the boys of Packer Park.
Kew had to come from behind against the Preston Bullants and then hold them off as they closed quickly in the contest.
The Bullants could’ve put a greater gap between themselves and the Bears in the opening term, keeping them goalless they kicked 3.6.24 to open up a 22 point lead. The Bears answered with six goals of their own in the second term to take the lead by 8-points at half-time.
The lead extended to 19 points before the Ants got momentum back on their terms and closed the margin to 3 points on the final siren.
Kew could consider getting out of jail in this one, Preston kicked 2.5 in the final quarter to get into a winning position.
Hugo Byron was named the best for the Ants whilst Liam McLeod kicked two. The Bears kept their finals chances alive with the win, William Llewelyn instrumental up forward with three goals. Max Waters was named the best on ground after his strong performance.
Kew take on Prahran in a fortnight, another win for the Bears will put them on level points with them. Preston will take on Ivanhoe AFC hoping to put a two game gap on the last placed side.
Prahran are in a rich vein of form at the moment, having now won three games on the bounce. They’ve now put Oakleigh to the sword and closed the gap on the second placed Krushers by a game.
The Krushers kicked three goals in the opening term, two of those from the boot of Aaron Cloke. After quarter time, the two-blues went to work and kept Oakleigh goalless from there.
Daniel Campbell (three goals) led the way, whilst Zac Podmore, James Musster and Ethan Plaza combined for six goals between them.
Oakleigh will naturally be disappointed with the loss, after having won four games in a row, they’ll have an extra week to think about this one. They’ll look to return to the winners list when they face West Brunswick in Round 13.
Brenton Egglestone has outshone his brother Jarrod from the weekend with a bag of five as Therry Penola produced a brilliant performance against UHS-VU
A two point lead at half-time to the boys of Uni High, saw them fall by the wayside after half-time as the Lions took hold of the contest with five goals to open up a 20 point lead at the final change. The momentum the Lions had garnered was enough to further stretch the lead out to 46 points when the final siren rang out.
The victory for Therry levels them with UHS-VU, both sides now sit on 7 wins for the season. It pushed the Lions into the top four and the boys of Uni High have fallen from third place to fifth with six weeks to go.
Nicholas Castaldi has had a great fortnight, and will be looking to continue his strong form when the footy returns after the representative bye.
UHS-Vu will be looking to get back on the winners list in Round 13 with a trip down the highway to face off against Old Peninsula.
Therry have the toughest task in Division 1, Glen Eira at Packer Park.
In the return bout from the 2022 Division 2 Grand Final, West Brunswick made it two wins in a row against Ivanhoe AFC. A nine point victory in a hard fought slog.
Prone to close contests, one point separated the sides at three quarter time before the Magpies finished the stronger over their black and white opponents.
Luke Buckler kicked two for West Brunswick, while Josh Elston did his best and fairest chances no harm with another best on ground performance.
Coach of Ivanhoe AFC Wayne Schultz kicked two majors and fought his way through the contest valiantly.
The victory for West Brunswick pushes them two games clear of Preston Bullants, potentially safe from relegation. They’ll face off against Oakleigh this week looking for two wins in a row.
Ivanhoe AFC take on Preston Bullants, could the Hoers get the win and push themselves to equal pegging with the Ants?

Xavs secure their second win, as Old Brighton put themselves back in the finals race
Round 12 kicked off with another show of dominance from Beaumaris, who ended Marcellin’s four-game winning streak with a 25-point defeat.
Marcellin put up a fight in the first half and went into the half-time break only 4 points in arrears, but they could not keep it up for the whole game, allowing Beaumaris to seal the game with a five goal second half.
For the Sharks, Ella Southgate (4 goals) and Simone Marinelli (2 goals) were formidable in front of goals as always, while Cassandra Newman continued her excellent season with another best-on performance.
A shining light in her team’s loss, Annie Xanthos provided more evidence that she is one of the best players in Division 1 and well-deserving of her spot in the Big V squad.
Hawthorn AFC’s difficult season continues with another loss at the hands of Old Xaverians
Old Xaverians may have felt a bit uneasy going into the main break only two goals ahead, but they quelled any fears with four unanswered goals in the third term. When the final siren sounded, Old Xaverians led by a game-high margin of 46 points.
Holly du Plessis and Mia Mathias ensured Hawthorn did not go goalless two weeks in a row, while Joelly Firmin did what she could to stop the game from blowing out. Meanwhile, a four-goal haul saw Sophia Rothfield receive the best-on-ground nomination for Old Xaverians.
Old Haileybury drew a line through Hampton Rovers’ finals aspirations, beating them comprehensively at Castlefield Reserve.
Struggling for numbers at this point of the season, Hampton Rovers started without any players on the interchange, which was always going to make for a tough day at the office. On the other hand, Old Haileybury came
out firing, already with a 23-point lead at the first break. The game persisted in a similar manner, with the final score line reading 0.6-6 to 10.9-69.
Maxine Behnke and Jasmina Andros continued their strong individual form for Hampton, finding themselves in the bests once again.
It was a team performance from Old Haileybury, with eight players recording goals to help their team over the line, but Elizabeth Simkin and Eloise Mccrae were the cream of the crop.
Old Brighton may just have saved their season with an important victory over second-placed Old Melburnians. Both sides have been inconsistent in the second half of this season so there was a lot on the line when the two sides met at Holmes/Todd Oval on Saturday.
Old Brighton came out firing, kicking four goals in the first term while not allowing Old Melburnians to reciprocate. This strong start ultimately set them up for the win, with neither side managing a goal during the middle two quarters. The Omlettes finally managed to gather some momentum in the final term, kicking two unanswered goals of their own, but they had left their charge too late and ended the day with a deficit of 17 points.
Sophie Fraser put in a solid case for her selection into the Big V final 22 with another team-best performance, while 2022 Rising Star nominee, Kitty Smyth, had a blinder for Old Brighton, kicking a goal and running hard all day.
After only winning one of their first five games, Old Geelong have found their form and are playing finals worthy football, having notched another impressive win on the weekend, this time over Old Camberwell Grammarians. Old Geelong led all day, denying Old Camberwell of a single goal, and ending with a final margin of 31 points.
Danielle Trott, Vicky Tan and Jessie Gleeson combined for the visiting side’s four goals, while Amy Halaby was their best player. For Old Camberwell, Olivia Honore’s performance stood out as the best.
The bye this weekend for representative football will provide a well-deserved break for the ten teams in Division 1, before they return for the pointy end of the season.
Round 13 will kick off with Hawthorn AFC travelling to Brighton Beach Oval to face Old Brighton in a game that should allow the Tonners to push to reclaim their spot in the top 2.
The rest of the Round 13 matches will see similarly placed teams battle, with no certainty of how the results will fall.
Old Geelong will host Marcellin OC, with the win likely to have a direct impact on who makes finals, while Old Melburnians will travel to Banksia Reserve to challenge Beaumaris in a top-of-the-ladder clash.
At the same time, Old Xaverians will have the chance to save themselves from relegation when they take on Hampton Rovers, who only sit one win above them on the ladder.
The final match of the round will see Old Haileybury fight it out with Old Camberwell Grammarians, in what is do or die for both sides if they wish to keep their (slim) finals hopes alive.

Cobras strike in a nail-biter
Koonung Park held a nail biter between the Old Paradians and the Old Yarra Cobras. The Raiders stormed forth to exploit the wind amongst a few Cobra missed sitters in the first quarter to take the lead at quarter time.
Harrison Colomer and Luke Brock ripped up the oval to provide opportunities for forwards to capitalise, Noah Whittle (2 Goals) and Darcy Taylor (2 Goals) did just that with the help of Thomas Cooper’s (2 Goals) supremacy. But the Cobras are not ones to back down from a fight and showed their venom in the second, kicking six.
Luke Stacker and Will Fleming put in an astounding performance of gut and vigour while big Tim Orchard (2 Goals) used his body well. Tom Bell (1 Goal), Anthony Lamana and Lewis Mitchell (1 Goal) won the in and under for Jack Hall (2 Goal) to convert.
With a 23-point lead at the main break, all the Cobras had to do was hold off the Old Paradians pressure. By the fourth quarter it was a scrappy contest between two teams desperately holding on by a thread. By the sound of the final siren, the Cobras held strong to win the skirmish by three points.
Aquinas displayed another prime example of passion and grit in their encounter with the behemoths in the South Melbourne Districts. A 23-point lead at quarter time was reduced to four by halftime. But the talent of the Swan’s roster proved too much even for their never-die attitude.
Jason Clifford (3 Goals) showed off his versatility winning the hard ball gets and kicking with accuracy. Dermot Murphy dominated the centre with the help of Max Collier (1 Goal) to provide opportunities for star forward Sam Bradford (3 Goals) to convert with the addition of Jamie Brooker’s creative flair (2 Goals). The Swans shut down the chance for a comeback in the fourth to leave with their chins high after a win by a kick.
South Melbourne have bounced back from the tough loss last week with nothing but elegance and have shown once again that they’re in the top four for a reason.
The tough conditions seem to be no match for the Whitefriars in their 34-point win over Bulleen Templestowe. The Friars took full advantage of the wind in the first quarter kicking up and long the ground to open the game up for a forward’s triumph booting six. From there it was a hard fight against the hungry Bullants.
Travis Baker and Jacob Berry were great down back, set up well behind the footy, and placed heavy pressure refusing to allow any space for Bullant forwards. Ryan Turner used his brilliance to set up the contest and Vito Midolo’s run off the wing was vital in getting the ball deep into the forward line. Daniel Wood put in another masterclass along with Angus Hands (1 Goal) to allow opportunities for Marlon Simbolon (2 Goals) and Jack Coates (3 Goals) to convert.
In addition to Nick Garratt’s (2 Goal) leadership around the ground, one evidently by example, the Friars clearly want that top four spot, and with a huge clash against South Melbourne Districts in Round 13, it may just be their decider.
From ball movement, to set up, to versatility, the Brunswick boys are back at it with a 59-point victory over St Mary’s Salesian. Ferndale Park saw the best of the best, a Brunswick squad full of contributors; Jackson Browne added to the barricade down back using the ball with ease while Ben Wilson was once again strong down the middle.
Zeph Hooke and Lewis Bonney-McKenzie gave plenty of drive off the half back-line. Paul Scamporlino (4 Goals) has come into his own translating his hard work ethic to the scoreboard and likely to be a huge danger for opposition soon to come. Although in the first half Brunswick struggled to capitalise on their opportunities going 5.13, the half-time talk fixed up their accuracy issues for the remainder of the clash.

Overall, Brunswick is a club of determination, hard work ethic, and positive culture with a bright generation ahead. Young players like Lewis Bonney-McKenzie and Zeph Hooke have had a solid season so far, not to mention the great Tahj Haddock who’s able to tag star forwards like a professional. At this rate the Brunswick boys are most definitely finals bound.
Once again, Parkside were ruthless on Saturday in their 45-point win over MHSOB and extend their domination over the division to a seven-game win streak. Matt Holden was at his best and Dominic Douglas (2 Goals) converted their hardearned effort to the scoreboard with efficiency.
Max Doyle won the in-and-under and set up well for the fifty along with Mitchell Lawson (1 Goal). Star forward Benjamin Radford (3 Goals) shoots ahead on the divisions goal kicking tally even in rough conditions rising to 51 goals overall.
There isn’t much more to say about the Devil’s domination, time and time again they’ve proven themselves as the ones to beat. High on the ladder at the top spot and deservedly so, the bets are in, they’re grand final bound.

A week of celebration for multiple milestone games
Round 12 was a week of celebrations with both St Mary’s Salesian and the Parkdale Vultures having club veterans take to the field for milestone games.
St Mary’s Salesian hosted MCC FC at Ferndale Park in a middle-of-the-ladder clash. MCC were short on players and only had a list of 15 while St Mary’s had 22. A low scoring first half saw an even match up with both sides winning clearances and gaining opportunities in front of goal. Having worked hard on forward 50 entries all season, St Mary’s displayed their development as a team and managed multiple forward entries and shots at goal.
Georgia Cropley kicked three majors for the Saints while Gabriella Rawlings kicked two. Nicole Shue, Mia Lanigan and Olivia Giblin all kicked one each. St Mary’s tough tackling pressure paired with their skilful ability to move the ball towards goal proved too much for MCC as the game progressed, and St Mary’s comfortably extended their lead. Despite their best efforts, MCC were defeated, 58-11.
Anna-Lisa Harris kicked MCC’s only goal for the game and Charlie Wade was best on. Felicity Campbell celebrated her 50th game for St Mary’s and played an integral part in the team bringing home the win.
Jess Welford also celebrated her 50th game milestone at Hudson Oval as Old Trinity took on the Parkdale Vultures. Despite the windy conditions, Old Trinity were dominant in the first quarter, taking five shots at goal and successfully kicking two. Going into the second quarter 15 points down, Parkdale lifted the energy and started to gain control of the game.
Both teams put on strong defensive efforts and made scoring difficult for the other as the game progressed. Madi Capsalis managed to kick two goals for Parkdale, while Kellie Woodhouse and Bella Eames kicked one each for Old Trinity. Just managing to hold onto their lead, Old Trinity brought home the win, 20-13. The win for Old Trinity has moved them up into third place.
Over at Ivanhoe Park, Ivanhoe hosted Williamstown CY. Taking on top-of-the-ladder Williamstown, Ivanhoe were able to keep up and match the energy of the ladder leaders, only conceding 15 points by half time.
Returning from the main break only 6 points down, Ivanhoe did their best to maintain the energy and did so throughout the third quarter. Williamstown came into the fourth quarter and showcased why they’re unbeaten this season. A huge last quarter effort saw Williamstown kick five goals and six behinds and walk away victorious. Star forward Alessia Acquaro kicked four goals for Williamstown and sits comfortably as the league’s leading goal scorer.
If the windy conditions weren’t difficult enough, Therry Penola had their work cut out for them coming up against Albert Park. Having been undermanned all season with this week being no exception, Albert Park leant six players to Therry in what was a fantastic display of spirit.
Albert Park was dominant right from the get-go, kicking 47 points in the first quarter, and going into half time with a 58-point lead. The onslaught continued into the second half of the game with Therry unable to add to the score board, and Albert Park piling on goals.
The VAFA is looking for volunteer reporters to cover Divisions 3 & 4 Women’s for the 2023 season. If you’re interested, please email media@vafa.com.au
Albert Park’s huge lead was the result of 11 different goals kickers, showcasing the team’s versatility and their ability to rely on many different players to hit the scoreboard. Sarah Kenny led the scoring by kicking five goals for Albert Park. While Therry Penola was defeated by 131 points, the win is Albert Park’s biggest of the season. Despite their best effort and the resulting margin, Therry Penola were valiant in their effort against Albert Park.
Following the bye, Round 13 will see huge match ups with first placed Williamstown taking on second placed Albert Park, Parkdale with face-off against St Mary’s, Therry Penola will verse Ivanhoe and MCC will take on Old Trinity.

Canterbury steadies the ship with a percentage booster
Round 12 of Division 3 football was a mixed bag of results, with an underdog nearly pulling off their biggest win of the year, while one of the premiership contenders proved once again that they are a force to be reckoned with.
Let’s start with Richmond Central taking on La Trobe University at Sheehan Oval on a Saturday afternoon. La Trobe, currently with just two wins for the 2023 season, took it right to the yellow and black, holding the lead all the way through to the third quarter after failing to score in the first.
In trying conditions and a contested game of footy, Richmond managed to come out on top late in the fourth with a 5-point win and another step toward a possible late push for a fourth-place spot.
Iryoung Fan starred for La Trobe, while Lachie Conboy was best afield for Richmond, who will now face Canterbury in one of their tougher tests toward the back end of this season.
Speaking of the Cobras, Canterbury wasted no time piling on goal after goal against Swinburne University at home, running out 93-point winners in a percentage-boosting performance.
Swinburne, who were admirable in their attack on the football. However, struggled to find any continuity against the onslaught of the Cobras after quarter time; with Jordan Dear scoring five goals of his own and one of the silkiest players in the comp, Mitch Szabo, kicking two.
The Cobras now sit 3% clear on top of the ladder and having only dropped two games for the season alongside Elsternwick. They look poised to confirm their spot with a double chance come season’s end.
Shifting attention to Ross Gregory Oval, Elsternwick managed to take care of Power House.
The game couldn’t have started any better for the bayside boys, with 4.7 setting them up for a great day in front of the big sticks, with 12 majors by the final siren.
Along with those 12 majors, however, came 20 behinds, meaning the eventual 39-point margin could have been far greater had Power House’s defenders not applied high pressure and attacked the football.
The final game of the afternoon was between two topfour rivals, with Hawthorn and Wattle Park battling it out.
The game had significance for finals superiority and ladder positioning, as it was an opportunity for Wattle Park to potentially pull one game back on the current third-placed Hawks.
Amazingly, in the first half of football, there were 12 goals and only two behinds scored, with 9 of those majors belonging to the Hawks.
Getting their patented run and carry moving early in the contest, Wattle Park lifted in the premiership quarter to bring the margin back to 20 points before the Hawks shut the door and threw away the key, running out 31-point winners.

The most recent round of VAFA Division 4 Men’s saw separations begin to take place as the division indeed became more divided.
The first match of the round saw Masala take on North Brunswick. Whilst the Bulls were looking to continue their undefeated streak, the Tigers were looking to get back in the winning column after losing 4 of their last 5. The first quarter saw North Brunswick utilise the wind to their advantage with their trademark head start to take a 3-goal lead into the second quarter. The second saw the Tigers fight back and show what it meant to be strong and bold as they narrowed the lead of the Bulls down to 6 points with a half of football to play.
In the third quarter, however, we saw a hard-fought and tightly contested game between the two sides with both struggling to hit the scoreboard. That was until the last 10 minutes of the quarter as the Bulls were able to get 2 crucial and momentum-swinging goals to head into the final quarter with a 22-point lead. The final quarter once again was another hard-fought battle between both sides with the Bulls adding any score they could to their total whilst also being strong in the last line of defence against the Tigers. In the end, the Bulls ran out winners by 33 points in a tight contest. Whilst the Bulls will have the 4 points to show from their win, the Tigers can take positives from this match including that they can hang with the best of the division for the majority of the game.
Goal kickers for the Tigers were Deakin Harris, Michael Hemmett, Flynn Cassar and Luke Decarne. Goal kickers for the Bulls included Jareth Ombiga (2), Marcus Watt, Jack Clapton and Simon Woodward. In the best for Masala were Flynn Cassar, Karan Singh and David Velardo. The best for the Bulls were Spencer Zahra, Zac Dicianni and Luke Russell. The Tigers will now face Albert Park who are currently on a 2 game losing streak. The Bulls will look to continue their winning ways as they face Eley Park.
In the second match of the round, Albert Park and Box Hill North battled it out in what was set up to be the match of the round. Albert Park capitalised on kicking with the wind in the first as they got the early jump on the Demons with a 4-goal to 1 quarter to extend their lead out to 25 points. The Demons however were able to rebound right back in the second with a 3-goal quarter to reduce the Falcons lead to 5 with a half of football to play.
The third quarter saw the game slow down with both teams only managing to score 1 goal each despite 12 combined scoring shots. Due to hitting the scoreboard most, however, the Falcons were able to extend their lead out to 9 points. In the final quarter however, we saw the best the Demons had to offer with a mammoth 7-goal quarter, ultimately catching the Falcons off guard to steal the game with a 33-point win.
Multiple goal kickers for the Falcons were Alistair Lupo (2) and Christopher Marson (2). Multiple goal-kickers for the Demons were Blake Williams (4), Jack Dullard (2) and Joshua Chivers (2). In the best for the Falcons were Drew Pearman, Hunter Harding and Paul Hutchins. In the best for the Demons were Alexander Williams, Aaron D’Amato and Carl Sieger. The Falcons will now look to rebound against Masala, a side they have a recent win against. The Demons will also travel away from home as they take on St Johns, a side knocking on the door of the top 4.
The final match of the round saw St Johns and Eley Park face off where a win would benefit both sides immensely. St Johns got off to almost the perfect start with a 6-goal quarter whilst being able to keep the Sharks scoreless in the process to take a 44-point lead into the second quarter. Eley Park put together one of the best quarters of the season with a 4-goal quarter whilst only allowing 2 goals from the JOCs to minimise the lead to 32 points.

St Johns immediately removed any chance of a thrilling Sharks win with a 6-goal quarter to open their lead all the way out to 77 points in one of their best quarters of the season. In the final quarter, the Sharks were able to slow the JOCs down and keep them to only 2 goals for the final quarter. However, the damage of the first and the third quarter of the JOCs was too much for the Sharks to overcome with the JOCs running out winners by 82 points in what is their biggest win of the season.
Multiple goal scorers for the JOCs were Benjamin Ayache (4), Corey Ely (3) and Kailum Newland (2). For the Sharks, Kane Scanlon kicked 3 majors whilst Drew Crawford and Tom Johnston both kicked 1 goal each. In the best for the JOCs were Daniel Cattolico, Corey Ely and Nicholas Terrill. In the best for the Sharks were Jonathan Tennent, Thomas Cherny and Zachary Hayes. The JOCs will now face a major challenge in the form of Box Hill North who are coming off a big win. The Sharks will play host to North Brunswick where they will look to provide the upset of the season.

MILESTONES
Vincenzo Armeni (South Melbourne Districts)
50
Maddie Box (Glen Eira Gryphons)
Congratulations Maddie on playing 50 VAFA games. A dynamic utility player, Maddie has slotted into the Glen Eira side beautifully in 2023. A strong mark and a great kick, we look forward to Maddie playing some terrific footy at Packer Park for many years to come. All the best for your milestone game Maddie!
Vincenzo “Vince/Vinnie/Vin/Gee you’re good” Armeni is the Districts Mr Fix-it. After arriving from Fitzroy in 2019, having been unable to break into their Thirds, Vinnie quickly became the Districts’ Mr Fix-it and a staple of the Ones, seamlessly integrated into the club like a long-lost son. On the field he is known for his unrelenting effort, ability to influence a contest and to find that extra gear when needed. His hardness and perseverance saw him overcome a long-term foot injury just in time to make his Reserves debut for their 2022 Grand Final, and the rest is history. 50
James Miralles-Lombardo (North Brunswick)
Congratulations to James on reaching 50 games. He is a dynamic forward who also takes his turn in the ruck when required. He is also a hard-hitting tackler with no fear. Well done from everybody at The Bullring.
Jed Dexter (St John’s)
St John’s FC acknowledges Jed Dexter on reaching 50 games for our club. Jed is currently playing in his 7th year at the Jocs. He has played both Seniors and reserves, assisted coach, coached the Ressie’s, been runner, water boy, goal umpire and a tough senior wingman. His efforts on the field always involve his total commitment and determination, and this is matched by his efforts off the field to always put the club first. No wonder he has been named Clubman of the year.
Bryce Dowler (La Trobe University)
100
Corey Ely (St John’s)
St John’s FC acknowledges a fantastic achievement from one of our most loyal, dedicated and determined players Corey Ely on reaching 150 games for our club. Corey has achieved this milestone in his 12th year at the club. Corey’s commitment to the club over the past 12 years has been outstanding. On the field he has an in and under attitude, his clearance work and great skills has seen him feature as such an important part in not only the JOCS midfield but in the senior team week in and week out. No doubt his highlights at his time at St John’s have been winning a Premiership in 2011 & named Captain in 2019. Off the field he is a person with great character around the club, always willing to put his hand up to help out, organise events and shows great leadership skills on a continuous basis. Corey was awarded the captaincy of St John’s since 2019. Well done Corka on reaching this milestone, hopefully another 150 games left in the body.
Congratulations to La Trobe’s BRYCE DOWLER on reaching 100 games – ‘Brucey Doull’ joined the Trobers in 2014 playing in the reserves before making his senior debut in Round 8. Doully returned to La Trobe for the 2021 COVID affected season and was a key member of the 2022 premiership side, playing as a strong leading forward with great hands and his lengthy goal kicking routine! A country lad from Waubra, he is the heart and soul of the club, greatly respected and loved by all. He is a fantastic contributor both on and off the field as he continues the Dowler family tradition of putting in and helping others. Well done Brucey on joining a select group of 72 Trobers who have played 100 games in the red & black! 150
