SEASON 2024 - July 20

TAC Road Safety Round 2024 –Show up for your team, Slow down on the road.

This weekend the VAFA and its clubs will again show their support of TAC Road Safety Round, in partnership with AFL Victoria. The campaign to reduce road fatalities and increase awareness about safe driving habits is in its sixth year in 2024. The focus of this year’s campaign is reducing speed on the roads and arriving safely at Community football with the tag line “Show up for your team, slow down on the road”. A key feature of the TAC campaign is the Blue “Band together” armbands that VAFA clubs will wear during all games this round, with clubs also increasing the awareness of the campaign through social media and within clubrooms.

“This round has developed into a genuine passion for clubs to not only honour everyone killed on Victoria’s roads, but to create a culture in their communities that values road safety. Improving road safety in Victoria is a joint effort and, while we’ll continue with our education campaigns and investment in life-saving infrastructure, we need everyone to play their role” - Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.

life of a friend or loved one, and we are asking everyone to play a role and make a difference.” - TAC CEO, Tracey Slatter.

St Kevin’s OB’s Mitch Wallis is the face of the campaign again in 2024. Within the TAC Road Safety Round campaign Mitch shares the impact road trauma has had on the father of two and his family, after his mother-in-law Katie passed away after being struck by a vehicle in 2022.

“Show up for your team, slow down on the road”

A feature of this year’s campaign is the introduction of ‘late-laps’. The TAC is highlighting to players that if they’re running late, they should resist the urge to speed, even if it means copping a few laps as punishment from the coach. During this TAC Road Safety Round, The TAC and VAFA are asking clubs to join in running these ‘late-laps’ – to show their support for everyone slowing down on our roads. By running ‘Late-laps’, VAFA clubs send a united message that there’s no need to rush, your laps have been covered. We want you to show up safely.

In 2024, 155 people have been tragically killed on Victorian roads, with 72 deaths on metropolitan roads and 83 on regional roads. Some notable trends in 2024 include 15 lives already lost in July and 33 since the beginning of winter, with pedestrian fatalities in 2024 increasing by 10 and motorbike rider lives lost increasing by 18.

“This year, football and netball clubs are encouraged to focus on the dangers of speeding while driving. We are really urging clubs to have conversations about the dangers of speeding and to avoid speeding, even if it means arriving at training or the game a little late. There is no more powerful motivator than saving the

TAC Road Safety Round is just one aspect of the TAC’s long-standing partnership with the VAFA, with the TAC Club Rewards Program offering clubs up to $10,000 for their efforts in promoting safe driving behaviours throughout the season.

If your club would like support engaging with the TAC Club Rewards Program, please reach out to VAFA General Manager, Community & Club Support – Sean Walker.

So, this weekend the VAFA urges its Community to play your role, reduce speed while getting to VAFA grounds and “Show up for your te am”.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S

Round 12 Preview

With players refreshed and returning after the double-bye, the race for September starts to pick up speed in Round 12 of VAFA William Buck Premier Men’s.

Old Brighton have been the pacesetters all season and their senior group has committed to sticking together through the winter rather than heading overseas for the European summer holiday that derailed their 2023 campaign.

This week they look to pick up where they left off when they host Old Melburnians at Brighton Beach Oval.

While the Tonners are fighting to maintain their one-game lead at the top of the table, OMs are fighting to jump up out of the drop zone in the race to avoid relegation. They enter Round 12 tied with St Bernard’s & Uni Blacks on 3 wins, but narrowly behind on percentage.

They’ve proven to be more than a handful in patches this season, with their most complete performances against Collegians in Round 1 and St Bernard’s in Round 9. But that 50-point win over the Snowdogs was followed by a couple of heavy losses, so the bye may have come at a good time for Paul Satterley’s men.

Can they reset and rediscover their best form to challenge the Old Brighton juggernaut, or will the Tonners roll on?

Four consecutive wins have seen Old Scotch rise above the chasing pack to take hold of third spot, a game clear of Old Xavs, Collegians and Uni Blues.

After some inaccurate kicking cost them a couple of early wins, the Cardinals have barely put a foot wrong, with their only losses in the past 7 starts coming against the Top 2 teams – and one of those was a 2-point thriller against SKOBs which proved Old Scotch are capable of hanging with the big dogs.

This week they host the unpredictable St Bernard’s, who needed the double bye as much as anyone after being cruelled by a mass of injuries that threatened to derail their campaign.

The Snowdogs may be in both the finals AND relegation races right now, although the latter seems more probable. However, if they can get close to full strength and string together some form, they’ve proven capable of serving it up to anyone on their day, which makes this a potential danger game for Old Scotch.

It’s impossible to know what to expect from St Bernard’s here. The Cardinals best be prepared for anything.

Old Xaverians jumped over Collegians and Uni Blues into the Top 4 after their big win over OMs last start and now they’ll be looking to consolidate that position when they host Fitzroy at Toorak Park.

Xavs have ridden the rollercoaster in 2024, so the next step for Dan Donati’s team is to find the consistency required to qualify for September.

When these two teams met in Round 3, Xavs put the game to bed early to lead by 47 points at half time, before the Roys finished strong to reduce the final margin to just 17 points.

But Fitzroy have improved with the extra 9 weeks of Premier Men’s experience and will have enjoyed their break after rolling the Snowdogs in their last start, keeping their hopes of remaining in Premier Men’s alive.

Will Xavs bank another precious 4 premiership points or can the refreshed Royboys pull off their biggest win of the season and add another twist to the race to avoid relegation?

To absolutely no-one’s surprise, perennial contenders St Kevin’s are in the premiership mix once again.

They surgically dissected reigning premiers Collegians last start at St Kevin’s – their sixth consecutive victory arguably their most impressive as they seized control of the wounded Lions from the outset and put them away in the wet.

This week they host University Blues at TH King Oval in a potential danger game for SKOB.

The Blues have shown glimpses of brilliance this season, but it has been blunted at times by injury and unavailability of key players.

The difference between Uni Blues’ best and worst is more than any other team in the competition, so opponents can only hope to face the Blues at the right time.

Will that be this week? Do they get some key faces back that can elevate this group back up into the Top 4?

They will need all the help they can get against the St Kevin’s juggernaut that has put a two-game gap into Old Scotch and remain within a game of the Tonners at the top.

But should the Blues fire? Well, anything is possible…

The final clash of Round 12 sees University Blacks host Collegians at Melbourne Uni Oval on Sunday.

Blacks are coming off three straight losses to the top 3 teams, but their most recent performance against Old Scotch showed signs of growth after they led the Cardinals at three-quarter time before falling 15 points short.

It provided a timely reminder of Blacks’ ability to thrive in a defensive scrap and of the four teams currently in the relegation race, they are clearly the best defensive group. However, they are also clearly the worst offensive group and that is their challenge – how do they open the game up to create more scoring opportunities without getting away from what they’re best at?

Opening the game up is particularly risky against Collegians, who thrive on high possession.

In fact, controlling the football is the key to the Lions’ success. If they rack up uncontested possessions, they win games. However, the rest of the competition is aware of it and has been successfully closing them down; the Lions hitting the bye having lost 3 of their last 4 (to the Top 2 plus Uni Blues).

This week they’re up against the #1 Tackling team in the competition who will also be hellbent on disrupting those possession chains.

Their Round 5 clash was a 10-point thriller after the Lions had led by 5 goals at half-time before Blacks fought back in the second half.

This promises to be another fascinating tactical battle between two teams desperate for the win.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S

Top four unyielding in William Buck Premier Women’s

Round 11 saw wild and woolly conditions across the competition, with teams putting everything on the line before the representative football bye weekend.

It was a low scoring affair at Scotch College where Old Scotch took home the chocolates, defeating Kew by 10 points.

With both sides struggling to control the slippery Sherrin, the only score of the first half went to Old Scotch when Millie Fraser-Smith converted truly after being paid a free kick.

Kew won the territory battle in the third term, however, were wasteful with their opportunities, only registering two behinds. It became another see-sawing affair in the final term, but when Mia Cowan kicked the second major of the day halfway through the quarter, it was enough to seal the game for Old Scotch.

In trying conditions, Zoe Carter received the coach’s plaudits for Old Scotch, while Georgia Wyett was best for Kew.

At Righetti Oval, St Kevin’s got the better of a slowstarting Caulfield Grammarians outfit, reinforcing their position at the top of the table.

The wet conditions were no issue for the well-oiled Saints, who locked the ball in their forward line for the first half to take a comfortable 37-point lead into the main break.

Sarah Cameron kicked two goals in the first two minutes of the third term to extend the margin to a whopping 49 points. Credit to the Grammarians, they refused to give up, kicking the next five goals to bring the final scores to 56-32.

Midfield bull Jessica Joyce led the way for St Kevin’s, while Sarah Cameron was also instrumental, kicking four goals to take back top spot in the league goalkicking tally. Tessa Boyd also made a welcome return to the Saints’ lineup in her first VAFA game of the year.

For Caulfield, Chloe O’Malley and India Lehman battled hard in defence all day to put the brakes on St Kevin’s attack.

Coburg hosted West Brunswick, with only one win separating the two teams on the ladder coming into the day. Reflective of their tight position on the ladder, the two sides could hardly be separated for much of the game.

The first term didn’t see either side kick a goal, despite both teams having periods where the ball was locked deep inside forward 50.

Mia Amon kicked the opening goal following a free kick in the pocket, sneaking home a brilliant shot to have the visitors full of confidence, going into the main break with a 10-point lead. However, Coburg emerged from the rooms determined to attack and give themselves every opportunity to win.

Stephanie Filbay kicked her fifth goal of the season after a strong contested mark, setting up a thrilling final term, as West Brunswick led by a solitary point.

Some strong bodywork by Melissa Lindsay saw her grab the ball out of the ruck and dribble home a goal, allowing West Brunswick a bit of breathing space again before Brighdin Walsh and Matilda Hammond iced the game in the dying minutes to record a 21-point win for the Magpies.

Taylah Watson was the best player on the ground in her 100th game, making it her 10th selection in the best players for West Brunswick this season.

While Coburg will see this game as one that got away from them, Dacia Abela’s strong performance was a consolation for the disappointing end result.

Collegians travelled to face Old Yarra Cobras with three debutants in Judie Goldman, Lara Brown and Jess Thomas pulling on the purple jumper for the first time. It was an exciting day for the club, with all three players making strong contributions in a resounding 42-point victory.

An inaccurate first term saw Collegians register 2.3 (15) to just one behind for the Cobras, who found themselves unable to adapt to the tough conditions throughout the day. The second and third quarters proved difficult for both sides, however, Collegians managed to add a further two goals in that period before another two in the final term put the nail in the coffin.

The result leaves the Cobras sitting in 8th position with a win-loss record of 3-8, putting them at risk of dropping into the relegation zone, while Collegians have moved 6 points clear of Caulfield to sit comfortably in 4th place with a 7-4 record.

Melbourne University put together their strongest performance of the year, beating Monash Blues by 48 points.

The Mugars got off to the perfect start, kicking four straight goals in the first term while not allowing Monash any real look in. They continued to dominate in the second, extending the margin to 37 points by the main break.

Monash managed to tighten things up a little in the second half, however, they couldn’t find a way to reduce the deficit, as Melbourne University put in a four-quarter effort to notch their second win of the season.

It was a team performance by Melbourne University, who had three multiple goalkickers in Madison Katerelos, Lucy Watkin and Angelena Roan, while Brooke Randall made her case to be selected in the final Big V team with another best-onground performance.

For Monash, Natasha Newman and Caitlin Williams earned the recognition of their coach for putting together their best games of the season.

With 7 rounds to play for when we return from the two-week bye, each result will begin to mean even more.

Collegians and Caulfield Grammarians will face off in a door-die match for Caulfield, who will need to win this if they want to take Collegians’ spot in the top four. Coburg will have a great opportunity to rest and reflect over the bye to prepare for a difficult post-bye encounter with Old Scotch. West Brunswick will look to build upon their recent form when they match up with Monash Blues, who have been struggling this year with just the one win so far. Melbourne University have shown their competitiveness against the top sides but will need to bring their A-game if they want to challenge top-placed St Kevin’s. Finally, Old Yarra will host Kew with the Cobras needing to make some drastic improvements if they wish to stay in the William Buck Premier competition next year.

PREMIER B MEN’S

Tigers triumph, finals race tightens

The double-bye is upon Premier B football, and it’s Daniel Ward’s Old Haileybury that has rocketed to the break with a ninth consecutive win, saluting in a one-v-two contest with Old Trinity. The Bloods are two games clear in first spot on the ladder - a brilliant turnaround from the 18-point loss to the T’s and a 43-point humbling at the hands of Beaumaris that kicked off their 2024 campaign.

In wet, windy conditions at Daley Oval, the Bloods held the Ts to just one goal in the first term, before kicking three goals to none in the second to go into the long break with a 22-point advantage. Donald McDonald’s side worked back into the contest to trail by just seven points with a few minutes left in the third, but the Bloods wrestled back control with the wind and finished with a flurry, piling on six goals in the last quarter to win 12.8 (80) to 6.6 (42).

After poor kicking and a stingy Sharks defence kept his side to their equal-second lowest score of the season in Round 10, Ward said he was pleased with his team’s ability to apply scoreboard pressure, despite the unfavourable conditions. A sore Durras Seccull was selfless and competed strongly in the air, responding to a goalless outing against Beaumaris with two majors, while livewire Andreas Stefanakis continued his mighty year with another three goals. Blood Josh Gasparini (30 disposals, 16 clearances) continued his magnificent form, while Nick Hodgson (31 disposals, 20 contested possessions) was manful for the Ts.

Second-placed De La Salle, the team considered to have the best chance of knocking off the Bloods by some around the competition, have won its last two contests by a combined total of 149 points - this time accounting easily for an undermanned Beaumaris at Banksia Reserve.

The 86-point victory, when combined with an average losing margin of 5.75 points (the heaviest De La loss being by just 10 points at the hands of Old Geelong) means that De La boast to a percentage of 138.28%, some 13.5% clear of third-placed Old Trinity. The percentage column of this year’s ladder promises to be the deciding feature in the second phase of the season, with five clubs from second down to sixth sitting at a 7-4 record.

“We’ve been in every single contest - we pride ourselves on being really competitive,” De La Salle coach Nick Hyland said. The 17.11 (113) to 3.9 (27) win allowed De La to trial some positional adjustments, with Campbell Bedford, Fraser Cameron and Lachie Gawel in fine form.

For Sharks coach Josh Bourke, it’s been a difficult three weeks, with an overwhelming number of first-choice players unavailable for selection. Graduates from the Sharks’ Under 19s team, Petar Pecer and Nate Dear, have impressed Bourke, as have current Under 19s pair Spencer McLennan and James Pepper.

Meanwhile defender Cal Linehan, who will line up in the Big V Prem B-Div 3 team this weekend at Elsternwick Park, has also enjoyed a stellar season. “The level of his performance at the minute - he really is capable of playing at another level,” Bourke said. “He’s fought his guts out to keep us in games at times.”

With spaces in the top four considerably difficult to nail down, Old Geelong secured a crucial four points on the road, turning around a 23-point deficit at the ten-minute mark of the final quarter to defeat Old Ivanhoe in a thriller.

Dominant Hoers midfielder Billy Murphy, remarkable on the day with 35 disposals, nine clearances and three goals, won a holding-the-man free kick in the dying seconds deep inside the Old Ivanhoe forward line.

His game-deciding drop punt clipped the outside of the goalpost as the final siren sounded in heartbreak for Old Ivanhoe. OG’s coach Nathan Brown was thrilled with the result, which looked unlikely in difficult conditions at Chelsworth Park. “Four goals down in the wet, away from home, against a quality opposition - it was looking like a win for Old Ivanhoe, one they deserved, too.”

At three-quarter-time, having kicked just two goals to the final break, Brown had implored his squad to lift with a well-earned rest to follow the next 30-odd minutes of football. The OGs came out firing in the last, dominating the disposal and inside 50 counts, with goals from Sam Barnett, Connor Dixon and Tom Furphy drawing the visitors within a kick.

A Nick Morwood goal put the OGs in front, but from the centre bounce the Hoers thrust the ball deep inside their forward 50, where Murphy would win the opportunity to effectively kick for the game. His miss sealed a 6.13 (49) to 6.11 (47) win for Old Geelong, which now sits fourth on the ladder, nearly 5% clear of Old Ivanhoe in fifth.

Hoers coach Jarrod Gieschen emphasised the need for Premier B teams to make the most of their good work in a season where ten-minute bursts have often proved the difference between squads. “When you’ve got the momentum, you’ve got to capitalise,” he said.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers was the story of Round 11, the Tigers finally breaking through for their first win of the 2024 season after coming desperately close over the last month. After suffering defeats by under a goal in Round 8 and Round 9, Brad Berry’s side was impressive across three quarters against Old Trinity before the Ts put their foot down after the final break.

“We looked at our measurements, our improvement markers, they were all there,” said Berry of the Round 10 game, which set the Tigers up nicely for a meeting with the Caulfield Grammarians

And indeed, St Bedes/Mentone arguably had the game won at three-quarter-time at Glen Huntly Park on the weekend, leading by 35 points at the turn for home. Despite a late Grammarians push, Berry’s young squad was able to shake off the jitters of being in a rare winning position, waving farewell to a difficult first phase of the season with a 12.12 (84) to 10.9 (69) win.

Lachie Palfrey, an anchor for the St Bedes/Mentone defence, combined well with “ultra-consistent” defender Zac Calvez, while wingman Max Sullivan played his best game of the season.

Jack Behnk (17 disposals, three goals), an Anytime Fitness Rising Star nominee in Round 1, has had an outstanding season for the Tigers - and Berry thinks he’s able to mix it at a higher level. “Jack’s effort has always been there, but all of a sudden he’s getting on the end of a few because we’re getting the ball through the way we’ve been training (for),” he said.

The smooth-moving Darcy Fountain (26 disposals, two goals) scopes as a midfield option for the Tigers in future, while the around-the-ground work of Category B Melbourne rookie Kyah Farris-White impressed his coach.

For Guy McKenna’s Grammarians, it was an opportunity to celebrate stalwart Dom O’Keefe’s 200th game for the club. “35 years of age, 17 years of service to the club, it’s fantastic,” McKenna said.

Finally, Old Camberwell ensured it kept pace with the glut of sides on seven wins, opening up a gap on Williamstown CYMS with a four-goals-to-none second term, eventually securing a 11.10 (76) to 7.9 (51) victory.

Old Camberwell’s Harrison Veitch (26 disposals, 20 contested possessions) and James Allen (26 disposals, 8 marks) showed their class, as the CYs were left to rue a slow start. Ultimately, a near five-goal margin at three quarter time was too much to haul in for the home side, Old Camberwell off to the bye with a handy win under its belt.

“(Old Camberwell) have forwards that go under the radar - they are fundamentally really sound, constantly in front, constantly presenting, able to read the ball in the air,” Terzoglou said.

Jordan Busuttil (30 disposals, 20 contested possessions) and Liam Conway (27 disposals) continued their strong seasons for the CYs.

An enticing second phase of the season looms when the season resumes on July 20.

Pedal to the metal as SBMT dominate Round 12

Round 12 of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition saw some big scores on the board, showcasing a consistent high intensity and quality of play. Teams continue to fine-tune their brand of footy with each match contributing to the evolving landscape of the season.

Williamstown CYMS maintained their unbeaten streak with a 5.3 (33) – 2.4 (16) victory over Old Geelong. This win further cemented Williamstown’s position atop the ladder, showcasing their consistency and strength in the league.

Old Geelong kept the stalwart side within arms reach by three-quarter time at 3.2 (20) – 2.3 (15). However, Williamstown did what they do best in the fourth quarter and used their experience and skill to read the play and intercept Old Geelong’s forward entries, which was crucial in limiting their scoring opportunities.

The midfield controlled the game with precise ball use and strong pressure, providing their forwards with ample scoring opportunities. Sofi Georgas managed to kick three goals to seal her team’s win, which got her named in the best three on ground, alongside Anais Lipski and Thalia Wright.

Old Geelong displayed numerous periods of competitive play. Their defence worked hard to contain Williamstown’s forward pressure. Sophia McCarthy, Sophia Rothfield, and Kathleen Dunn were standout performers for the day in Old Geelong, managing to find space and capitalise on opportunities. However, Williamstown’s cohesive unit proved to be too strong, yet again.

Fitzroy delivered a dominant performance against Aquinas OC, keeping the side goalless at 9.6 (60) – 0.1 (1). From the first bounce, Fitzroy’s intent was clear as they controlled the game with their superior skills and teamwork.

The midfield’s ability to win clearances and distribute the ball up front allowed Fitzroy to dominate possession and territory. Nadia Conte was in fine form, bagging three goals and showcasing her accuracy in front of the big sticks.

Aquinas OC struggled to match Fitzroy’s intensity and execution. Hannah Virgona, Niamh Sanders, and Asher De Klijn were among the best for Aquinas and displayed high work rates and determination. Despite the best efforts of their defensive unit, Aquinas found it difficult to shut down Fitzroy’s relentless movement of the ball. Their midfield was under constant pressure, limiting their ability to generate forward momentum.

Fitzroy’s defence was also unbendable, allowing Aquinas very few scoring opportunities. Olivia Brilliant was as her name suggests – Brilliant – receiving best on ground, alongside Ellie Sbeghen and Robyn Randell. This comprehensive victory reaffirms Fitzroy’s status as a strong contender for the finals, highlighting their allaround strength and depth.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers were the standout performers of the round with a dominant 14.9 (93) –1.2 (8) victory over Old Xaverians. The Tigers were relentless from the outset, playing with a level of intensity and precision that Old Xavs struggled to match.

Larni Strode, Olivia Watkins, and Belinda Ousley were standout performers for the Tigers, proving to be threatening whenever they were near the ball. The forward line was in devastating form, capitalising on every opportunity and finishing with a high degree of accuracy, with players like Nina Coghill kicking three for the day.

Old Xavs had a tough day, finding it difficult to contain the Tigers’ attacking blitz. Despite the efforts of the defensive backline, who worked tirelessly in all day, the gap in class and execution was evident.

This emphatic 85-point win for the Tigers boosts their confidence and strengthens their position on the ladder as they push towards the finals.

Westbourne Grammarians secured an important 7.6 (48) – 2.5 (17) victory over Beaumaris in a match that highlighted their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. Westbourne’s balanced approach, combining strong defensive efforts with efficient forward play, was key to their win.

Joudy Joud, Jade Desira, and Odeth Lopez were instrumental in their team’s win, providing drive and creativity that set up numerous scoring opportunities for Westbourne. Temeika Cathery and Stephanie Williams were deadly in front of goals, kicking three goals apiece. Their ability to win the contested ball and use it effectively was a highlight.

Beaumaris, despite the loss, showed periods of competitive play. Their forward line created several scoring opportunities, but accuracy in front of goal proved to be a challenge. Skye Shipton, Zoe Barbakos, and Sophie Crofts led the charge, securing their position as best on the ground.

This win is crucial for Westbourne as they aim to solidify their position on the ladder and keep their finals hopes alive.

As the season progresses, the competition remains fierce. Williamstown CYMS continue to set the pace with their unbeaten record, showcasing their dominance and consistency. Fitzroy’s commanding win reaffirms their status as a top contender, while St Bedes/Mentone Tigers’ offensive masterclass highlights their potential to challenge for the title.

Old Geelong, despite their loss to Williamstown, remain in contention for a top-four finish, demonstrating their resilience and competitiveness. Westbourne Grammarians’ important victory keeps them in the finals race, while Beaumaris, Aquinas OC, and Old Xaverians will look to regroup and finish the season on a high note.

Parkdale edge Eagles in thriller as Oakleigh get on the board

Round 11 was headlined by a nail-biting contest between Marcellin and Parkdale Vultures which saw the latter claim the four points in a thrilling finish.

This weekend was a chance for teams to make an impact before the two-week break, and indeed many teams did leave a positive footprint heading into the rep footy bye.

AJAX put on another dominant display, defeating Glen Eira/Old McKinnon by 44 points.

The first quarter was one to remember for the away side, kicking 7.5.47 to the Gryphons solitary one goal.

The Gryphons did show some fight and determination in the rest of the game but could not chase AJAX on the scoreboard as both teams went on to kick a further seven goals.

Jordan Cohen and Richie Simon were key in front of goal for AJAX with five and four goals respectively.

This victory sees AJAX hold onto 2nd position, still just percentage from top spot. Whilst the Gryphons sit in 7th with some breathing space, two games clear of 8th place.

In what was the most exciting game of the weekend in Premier C, the Parkdale Vultures defeated Marcellin by 2 points.

The first half was largely controlled by the Vultures who lead on the scoreboard and showed a lot of hunger for the footy.

Their lead of 20-points at half-time could’ve been higher if not for some inaccuracy in front of goal, but it was a good lead nonetheless.

Marcellin needed to deliver a response, and that is what they did, reducing Parkdale’s lead to 17-points by three quarter-time to give themselves a realistic chance in the final term.

Marcellin kicked four of the first five goals in the fourth quarter to give themselves a 1-point lead, however a trio of behinds from the Vultures allowed Parkdale to get over the line and claim the four points.

In his first senior game this season, Marcus Alessi made a good contribution with two goals for Marcellin.

After having a tough start to their Premier C campaign, Oakleigh recorded their first win of 2024, defeating the Monash Blues by 26 points.

Oakleigh set the tone early with a dominant display in the first half, giving it their all in the contest and showing an eagerness to claim their first win.

Despite Monash’s best efforts and intent to fight back in the second half, Oakleigh broke further away in the third quarter and comfortably got home.

Nixon Hall, James Flett and Charles King were among the best players for the Monash Blues, whilst Rogan Kitts lead the way in front of goal for the victorious Oakleigh.

The result of this game has implications for the ladder, with Oakleigh jumping to 9th position, slightly ahead of the Blues on percentage.

Old Carey continued their run of good form with an impressive 43-point victory against PEGS

The first half belonged to Old Carey who had amassed a strong 39-point lead by half-time with good ball movement and pressure in the contest seeing them through the first-half.

To PEGS’ credit, they kept Old Carey scoreless in the third quarter, however Old Carey were back to their normal ways in the final term to comfortably win.

Riley Thompson and Trent Warren continued their good seasons with three-goals each for Old Carey.

This loss will make it more difficult for PEGS to make finals now sitting four games out of the finals placings. Whilst Old Carey remain on top of the ladder with AJAX not far behind them on percentage.

Hampton Rovers reinforced their top four credentials with a 23-point victory over Mazenod

Mazenod had the lead at quarter-time as the Rovers were inaccurate in front of goal, but the home side quickly turned things around to build up a 9-point lead at halftime.

The lead from the Rovers only increased that throughout the afternoon to find themselves once again on the winners list.

Jamie Delaney and Dillon Melnjak lead the way for the Rovers who find themselves in a good position, just one game behind Old Carey and AJAX, whilst Mazenod are two wins and a percentage boost out of the top four.

The action resumes after the two-week break with Round 12, some teams will still be feeling the effects of a limited playing list with many players taking the opportunity to catch some warmer temperatures away from Melbourne.

AJAX host the Parkdale Vultures in an exciting match-up between 2nd and 4th. If Parkdale are back at full-strength they may get over the line, however AJAX have shown a lot of promise in recent weeks.

The other top-four battle sees Old Carey host the Hampton Rovers. A win for the Rovers could see them with a top-two spot by the end of the round.

The Monash Blues host Marcellin in a game that both sides have a strong chance of winning. Both teams have shown they have a lot of potential and when they get going and build some momentum will play a good brand of footy.

The other match-ups see 5th v 6th meet as Mazenod play PEGS, whilst the two sides promoted from Division 1 last season, Oakleigh and Glen Eira/Old McKinnon, will meet on Oakleigh’s turf.

June Volunteer and Coach of the Month Awards
Congratulations to Kevin O’Sullivan from Oakleigh AFC for being named The Pass Volunteer of the Month, and to Lawrence Henry from Williamstown CYMS for being named Carruthers Executive Coach of the Month, for June 2024. Nominations for The Pass Volunteer of the Month and Carruthers Executive Coach of the Month awards for July are now open!

On Saturday 13 July, Fitzroy Football club celebrated the 10th anniversary of its women’s program with great wins by both Reserves and Senior teams against Aquinas before a huge post-match party. In partnership with the Australian Catholic University (ACU), the mighty Roygirls took to the Brunswick Street Oval for their first official game on Sunday 19 April 2015. In 2016, a Reserves team was added and, in 2017, the two teams were part of the inaugural VAFA Women’s competition.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, current and former senior coaches put together a Team of the Decade made up of 18 players across positions and a sixmember bench.

President David Leydon said it was fantastic to see so many people come out to watch on Saturday and stay to celebrate. “There was such a great feeling around the club all day. We had players and coaches from the very earliest days being able to see and meet current players from the Reserves and Seniors teams, which are both on their way to finals.”

Sinnott (University Blues)

The VAFA congratulates Archie Sinnott from University Blues, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 11. Archie has had a real impact in his first season in the seniors at Uni Blues, with a willingness to adapt and play where needed week to week. Archie was selected in the Holmesglen Under 19’s Showcase on Saturday 6 July where he was amongst the best of the young VAFA talent on display.

What the club said:

Coach of University Blues, Guy Martyn said: “Archie is a hard running left footed wingman with a real appetite to learn and better himself. His hard work has him filling holes and helping the back six one minute, then using his pace charging towards and pumping the ball inside 50 the next minute. He’s played every game in his first year of senior football with Uni Blues and hasn’t looked out of place at all.”

Preston Bullants take down flag hopefuls

Fresh off a one-week bye, teams came out all guns blazing in Round 12 of the Division 1 Men’s competition. The weekend saw the Preston Bullants show the depth of their ability, upsetting the UHS-VU in a last-quarter thriller. Meanwhile Prahran have been climbing the ranks, posting win after win, in a good run of form to find themselves sitting a game clear on top.

Prahran had yet another strong performance at home defeating third placed Ormond by 19 points to secure themselves at the top of the table. Signs were positive early on for the Monders as midfielder Jackson Hille took a ripping speccy at half forward and young-gun Luke Kennedy back in the lineup impacted the scoreboard.

Kyle Pinto’s side were a bit more efficient going inside 50 giving them a seven-point lead at quarter-time. In the second term, Prahran’s game got going and so did small forward Taylor Bamford who thrived in the wet conditions kicking three goals in a row midway through the second quarter. Monders forward Aidan Soria kicked a muchneeded steadier before half time to keep them within 10 points.

In the third term, Prahran’s midfielders James Musster and Matt Clifford started to dominate the young midfield of the Monders. Not only did Prahran’s heat around the contest overwhelm the opposition but the key talls were ferocious.

Ruckman Rory Brodie led from the front in the aerial battle alongside Shaun Chapman who was welcomed back into the team. A 7-goal to 1 premiership quarter put the game to bed.

The Monders responded in the last term with some bolder ball movement by Rhys Kennedy on the half-back line and some wins in the centre bounces helped them kick five goals on the bounce.

West Brunswick surged past Therry Penola in the last quarter to win by 12 points on the weekend. It was a day of momentum shifts for both sides with lead changes at quarter time as well as the main break.

Magpies forward Bill Irving played his best game for the year kicking 5 goals and Emlyn Nettleton in the ruck worked hard around the ground.

Therry Penola were playing a great brand of football leading by 10 points at three-quarter time until Magpies forward Thomas Zafiropoulos had other plans. After not impacting the scoreboard prior to the last term Zafiropolous wheeled himself to kick 3 game-defining majors to help his side get in front. The Magpies› heat around the ball in the last term was the key in what were tough conditions.

Parkside got back on the winner’s list in a high scoring battle against Old Peninsula by 25 points.

It was goal for goal in the first three quarters with both sides showing plenty of skill and flair. The midfield battle between the Devils’ Benedict Douglas, and Michael Romano against Pirates Kurt Thiele and Jake Lovett was a great one.

In the past month the Devils have struggled to get over the line after three-quarter time but were determined to get the points as Rick Frost’s side took a 5-point lead at the last break.

The Pirates got the first blood in the last quarter to give them the lead, but a five-goal burst by the Devils ended their three-game losing streak.

Devils’ defender Luciano Logozzo floated forward to kick three goals for the match and some great pressure by Louis Grist and Luke Caldwell helped their side entrench themselves in the top four.

The Preston Bullants got a spark back after the bye round defeating UHS-VU in game that went down to the wire.

The Vulture’s defence struggled to cope with the fast ball movement by the Preston Bullants in the first three quarters and Alex Johnston provided a great presence by kicking the 4 goals.

The Preston Bullants midfield of Luke Green and Hugo Byron worked in tandem as the Vultures trailed by five goals at three-quarter time.

It was all but over as the Vulture’s midfield got to work to stage a late comeback with Harrison Kennedy kicking them back within a goal late. Ultimately, inaccuracy cost the Vultures kicking (6.18) and the young Preston Bullants side held on to claim a big scalp.

The Kew Bears continued their winning streak, comfortably defeating the Old Yarra Cobras by 58 points.

The Bears coming off the bye round were off to a flyer with a 5-goal to 1 start.

Connection inside 50 from the Bears continued to be positive with Ned Waters, Cameron Roberts and Joshua Maccarrone all proving a handful for the Old Yarra Cobras defence.

With the Old Yarra Cobras trailing by 32 points at the main break the midfield needed to lift, and Tom Bell certainly led his side to a response in the third term.

With just a 4-goal differential heading into the last term, the Old Yarra Cobras believed they could place more scoreboard pressure, but five goals on the bounce by the Bears put an end to it.

Round 13 sees a top of the table clash between Prahran and UHS-VU. Last time these two sides met, the Vultures put away Prahran by a convincing 65 points but since then their opposition have improved immensely.

Therry Penola are back at home against Parkside. The young Therry Penola side would be rueing the missed opportunity on the weekend but will love the challenge to shake up the top four.

Kew will come up against Old Peninsula at Victoria Park in a must win match for both sides. The Pirates outclassed the Bears at home in their recent history – will home ground advantage work the other way this weekend?

Ormond will be looking to respond after the weekend’s loss as they come up against the Preston Bullants. In their previous match up, the Bullants almost pulled off an upset but couldn’t quite stick to their brand for the full four quarters.

The Old Yarra Cobras play West Brunswick at Koonung Reserve. In the past month, the Magpies have been extremely competitive and will be looking to get their fourth win of the season.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

Omlettes steal victory, as Marcellin forward bags 10

Old Melburnians stole a crucial four points in the context of their season, while big wins at the top of the ladder saw the top sides extend their gap to the mid-table.

There is now just four weeks left of the home and away season, and while the top four teams appear to have broken away, fighting for that home final in the first week could be pivotal.

Opening the round on Saturday was Old Haileybury hosting Old Melburnians, as the Omlettes claimed a three-point win away from home.

The OM’s needed to bag the four points against the Bloods, who going into the contest, sat just one win above them on the ladder. A loss would have meant OM’s were all but certain to finish last.

In the opening term it was the Bloods who struck first, off the boot of Bridget Hanrahan. Her goal was immediately matched by OM’s Prue Harvey to level the scores into the first break at a goal apiece.

The second quarter was dominated by the visitors. They couldn’t quite capitalise on such momentum, but still managed to open up a handy nine-point buffer into half-time.

Old Haileybury, sensing the importance and significance of the game at hand came back firing.

Harvey put the Omlettes up by 15 points early in the third, before a run of three unanswered Bloods’ goals gave them the lead at the final change.

Lucy Thea extended the Old Haileybury lead out to 10 points, before Harvey slotted her third to bring it back to a one kick ballgame.

All seemed to be going the way of the Bloods before a goal to Old Melburnians from Clare Fraser near on the final siren, stole the game and with it a vital four-points.

All five OM’s goals from Harvey and Fraser gave mentions among the best for Old Melburnians alongside Milly Treacy.

While for Old Haileybury, Ella Gown was named in the best for a remarkable tenth time out of a possible 12 games this season.

Marcellin recorded a monstrous triple-figure win over Collegians at Marcellin College.

The Eagles came into this matchup expecting to win, and from the outset they were firing on all cylinders.

It was a combination of utter midfield dominance and the presence of Zoe Glascott up forward with three first quarter goals that lifted Marcellin to a 50-0 lead at quarter time.

The surge was simply astonishing from the second-placed Eagles who just continued to pile on goal after goal. The half time scoreline, 12.7 (79) to 0.1 (1).

Glascott slotted her sixth in the third term, before finally a goal was kicked for the depleted Collegians outfit courtesy of Isabella Allan.

The fourth term certainly made this game and the moment the headline of the round, as Glascott went on a tear.

She slotted four final quarter goals and with her last of the day kick her tenth of the morning and in doing so saluted a 102-point win for the Eagles.

She takes her tally up to 43 for the year and leads the sections goal kicking tally by 15.

Glascott’s 10 goal haul was one of the easier names to include among the best for Marcellin. Joining her was Sara McMillan and Olivia Frost.

As for Collegians, Sunday Stoney, Laura Luci and Emma Fitzpatrick showed promise on a tough day.

Old Brighton remained undefeated, posting a commanding 67-point win against the Parkdale Vultures to close out the round.

In what was typical Brighton Beach Oval conditions, wind played a major factor in the contest. But it was no harm for the Tonners, who piled on four goals to nil in a dominant opening term.

The barrage continued off the break, as Sienna Courtney and Morgan McGregor, made it six individual goal scores for the hosts. They took a positive 6.5 (41) to 0.0 (0) lead into half time.

Old Brighton continued with a spring in their step extended the lead to 56 with goals to Mietta Nolan and Chloe George.

Parkdale finally found the big sticks late in the term before a snappy response from Lily Tait set the margin back to near 10 goals on the stroke of three-quarter time.

A couple goals for Old Brighton in the last, saw the undefeated Tonners prove once again why they are the team to beat in 2024.

Tait with two goals takes her goal tally this season to 28 with two goals. She was named among the best alongside skipper Caterina O’Brien and Katie Grant.

Breanna Allen, Lucy Burgess and Jasmine Reeve were impressive for Parkdale and were named in their best players.

Next week ladder leaders Old Brighton head to Ian Johnson Oval to visit Collegians. Old Melburnians will host Marcellin, and Parkdale Vultures will look to get back on the winners list against Old Haileybury.

ROUND

DIVISION 2 MEN’S

It was a high-scoring affair around the grounds last weekend, with a middle-order shootout seeing Hawthorn leapfrog MHSOB to secure fifth position after 12 rounds. Meanwhile, a nail-biting finish at JW Manson Reserve sees Aquinas propel themselves from the bottom of the ladder.

The round kicked off with a clash between two titans of the competition in Brunswick and Elsternwick. In a to-and-fro tussle, it was the Nobs who had the strength to hold off the charge of the Wickers and come away with the four points. The final scoreline of 86-58 is not quite indicative of the close nature of the contest, with a 7-goal fourth quarter rampage getting the job done for the ladder leaders.

Elsternwick managed to turn a 4-point deficit at quartertime into a 10-point advantage come the third quarter change, led by the likes of Rhodi Jones-Pritchard and Flynn Brosnan. They seemed to have all the momentum, but inaccuracy precluded a more comfortable buffer.

Brunswick got their skates on with 30 minutes to go in the game, with six individual goal scorers contributing late and their collective experience helping them regain control.

Angus Coverdale and Rowan Hogenbirk were instrumental for Brunswick, while Thomas Wilson topped the goalkicking for the Nobs with three goals. For Elsternwick, James Howard and Julian Yeatman each kicked two goals.

Brunswick’s ability to rally in the final quarter highlights their experience and depth, crucial factors as they aim to maintain their position at the top of the ladder.

South Melbourne Districts put on a dominant display, defeating Bulleen Templestowe by 51 points.

The Districts’ Jay Engellenner was a standout, kicking four goals and being named among the best alongside Blaise Bajram. South Melbourne’s comprehensive win underscores their offensive strength and solidifies their standing in the competition. Jay Engellenner’s four-goal haul is a testament to their attacking prowess.

Lachlan Sticca and Jack Cowell were the best for Bulleen, but their efforts couldn’t match SMD’s firepower. Corey Shiels was the top goal-kicker for Bulleen with three goals.

Whitefriars secured a comfortable victory at home over Wattle Park, winning by 39 points. Despite a slow start in the opening term, the Friars regained control of the match to take a 3-goal lead at the main break. This margin continued to grow in the final two terms with the final scoreboard reading 16.7 (103) to 10.4 (64).

Ethan Wu and Jordan Knox led the charge for Whitefriars, with Nicholas Garratt being their top goal-kicker with four goals. Wattle Park’s efforts were led by Joden Crothers and James Rippon, with Jonathan Greensides contributing three goals.

The football was a hot commodity at Melbourne High School with 32 goals scored for the game. Through brut attacking prowess, Hawthorn have catapulted into fifth on the ladder with a hard-fought 14-point win over MHSOB

The match was a shootout, with MHSOB’s Mathew Pereira kicking a remarkable 10 goals. However, it wasn’t enough to secure the victory, as Hawthorn’s balanced attack, led by William Meehan with four goals and best-on-ground performances from Ethan Harvey-Cleary and Ethan McLaren, saw them over the line.

Hawthorn’s victory over MHSOB not only showcases their scoring ability but also their capacity to perform under pressure. Climbing to fifth on the ladder, they are a team to watch in the coming weeks.

In the closest match of the round, Aquinas edged out St Mary’s Salesian by just three points in a thrilling encounter. Garrison Asciak and Michael Di Donato were pivotal for Aquinas, with Asciak also contributing three goals alongside Adam Reichart.

Despite strong performances from Lewis Powell and Alex Stork for St Mary’s, and three goals from Trent Ryan, Aquinas managed to secure the victory and lift themselves from the bottom of the ladder.

Aquinas’ narrow win demonstrates their tenacity and ability to perform in high-stakes situations. This victory could be a turning point as they strive to climb further up the ladder.

As the competition progresses, these performances and results will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of the season, setting the stage for more exciting and unpredictable rounds ahead. Fans can look forward to seeing which teams capitalize on their momentum and which players continue to shine on the field.

Power House charge up the ranks as Mazenod overrun the Hawks

With just one month remaining in the home and away season, there is a tight tussle to secure a position in finals. With just 2 points the difference between third and fifth, one poor performance could prove costly at the pointy end.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon have once again proved themselves as flag frontrunners in 2024, outplaying the competition in a 20-point victory over Oakleigh. The Krushers were quick to get their hands on the footy with their lone score for the day coming in the first 3 minutes of play with a behind.

Glen Eira did what they do best from then on and controlled momentum, shifting the state of play to their advantage as they hit the scoreboard, with a 15-point advantage at the half.

A sign of a good team is a fighting spirit, and Oakleigh showed some ticker in the match applying defensive pressure, which ultimately prevented a blowout result on the scoreboard. Glen Eira’s accuracy will be a focal point for the remaining rounds; an area that could make or break a game in a close contest, kicking 2.9 (21) on the weekend.

Eliza Morrison is a hidden gem that the Glen Eira Gryphons have uncovered kicking a goal and earning herself a spot in the best in her past and only 2 matches of the season. The skipper was in her usual fine form, leading her side to yet another victory.

Despite sitting comfortably on top, the Gryphons are showing no signs of slowing down as finals etch closer; instilling a sense of fear in the competition with what they may deliver on the big stage. The loss sees Oakleigh slip from third to fifth, needing to boost their percentage to break back into the top four.

A win on the weekend sees Power House leapfrog into third, coming away with a 32-point win over Richmond Central. Catherine Bartholomew has impressed since making her debut just three weeks ago, kicking 2 of Power House’s 5 goals.

Power House got off to a fast start with their early lead of 25 points too significant for the Snakes to chase down. After slotting 4.1 in the first, fatigue started to set in with Power House registering just a further 1.6 in the final three quarters of play.

Julie Dortmans, Rionach Nealon, and Louise Allen all contributed noteworthy performances for the Snakes, and will be eager to get back on the park next weekend and back on the winners list when they come up against Mazenod.

Over at the winner’s camp, Grace Read who has hardly put a foot wrong all season finds herself named best afield yet again, making a strong case for the competition’s Best and Fairest.

In the match of the round, Mazenod staged a late comeback to overrun Hawthorn in an impressive display of endurance and determination. On a sunny morning at Central Reserve, the football was in motion for much of the game with just 3 goals scored for the duration.

The Hawks gave themselves a comfortable buffer heading into the first change with a 1.6 (12) start outshining the Nodders’ score of 0.1 (1). After a goal going the way of Mazenod late in the second term to drag the margin back to 3 points, scoring shots dried up at either end right through to the fourth quarter.

Hawthorn sacrificed early dominance and a healthy lead, unable to hit the scoreboard after quarter time. Mazenod took the momentum and ran with a final goal from Evangeline Clough Good sealing their fate and securing them the all-important 4 points.

Whitefriars streak continues as they record their fifth win on the trot, with Old Camberwell/AJAX their latest victim. In a one-sided affair for much of the contest, a cohesive Whitefriars outfit took their chances early to control much of the footy with a 3.3 first half, keeping their opponents at bay.

Susan Miller

Home ground proved no such advantage for Old Camberwell/ AJAX who were playing catch right from the outset. Gypsy Folwell scored their lone goal which came in the final term, which gives credit to the side for not giving up when the chips are down.

Caitlin Ryan spearheaded the rampage from the Friars with 3 majors, while Mia Smith contributed 2 of her own. Whitefriars charged home to a 33-point victory, with the final scoreboard reflecting 1.2 (8) to 6.5 (41).

The clash of the green and golds was not to be as Old Trinity had to forfeit their matchup against Hampton Rovers due to insufficient numbers to get on the park. The handy four points cements the Rovers in second spot for now with a tough run home looming.

Every weekend from now on offers teams a chance to fine-tune their skill and end the season on a high note. Hawthorn kicks off the Round 13 campaign back at home and will push the Hampton Rovers right to their limits as they look to get back on the winners list. Power House host Old Camberwell/AJAX, while Mazenod will be looking to carry their momentum as they travel to face Richmond Central.

The match of the round between Whitefriars and Oakleigh is sure to be a spectacle with percentage separating the two currently sitting in fourth and fifth. Will the stars align for the Friars to make it six in a row, or will the Krushers bounce back into the top four?

Rounding out the weekend of community football, Old Trinity will come up against a dominant Glen Eira/Old McKinnon at Daley Oval in the primetime slot.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Top-four sides a class above in thumping Round 12 wins

The top-four teams of Division 3 have demonstrated their superiority over the competition, as a two-game differential now lies between fourth and fifth on the ladder.

An initially inaccurate St John’s clicked into gear in the second quarter, with a 10-goal blitz against Box Hill North setting the tone for a 148-point victory.

Leading by just 19 points at quarter-time, St John’s had kicked a wayward 3.9 (27), keeping Box Hill North, at 1.2 (8), in the hunt. However, the JOCs soon found their groove, kicking 10.6 to 1.1 in the second term, resulting in a 78-point halftime buffer.

The Demons had no answers for the JOCs, scoring just nine points in the second half, including a scoreless final quarter. St John’s motored on until the final siren, winning with a score of 25.22 (172) to 3.6 (24).

Joshua Mourant kicked a spectacular nine goals for St John’s as Jayden Rudd and Jon Grima earned best on ground votes.

Kyle Hocking, Beau Parthenides and Toby Love were amongst the best for Box Hill North, as captain Aaron D’Amato hit the scoreboard.

In the most anticipated match of the round, Power House have boosted their credibility with a comprehensive 52-point win over Richmond Central. Power House piled on the first six goals of the game, immediately establishing their dominance.

The Snakes went into the game in fifth, however were yet to beat a top four side. In a chance to prove their quality against the best, a sluggish first quarter upended their opportunity. The Snakes wrestled against Power House’s early momentum, scoring the lone second-quarter goal, and going goal-for-goal throughout the third. Ultimately Richmond Central ran out of legs, never able to overturn the quarter-time deficit.

Joseph Halloran and Michael Timmons were best on for Power House as Jack Taylor-Evans booted three majors.

Henry Spurr, Campbell Mellor and Charles Spring played boldly for Richmond Central as Jack Bilson punted four goals for the Snakes.

With Power House’s win, an eight-point buffer separates fourth and fifth on the ladder, providing security for teams in the top-four. The Snakes face another top-four side in Canterbury next week, in a further game to verify their credibility.

Across a consistent four-quarter effort, Canterbury outclassed a straight-kicking Chadstone side. The Cobras pushed the lead out to 56 by halftime, with Nicholas Szabo kicking three of his four goals in the first half.

A defiant four-goal final quarter from Chadstone was unable to prevent the triple-digit margin nonetheless, as Canterbury triumphed by 105 points.

Lachie Dowsett (3 goals) and Ben Ogilivie (2) managed multiple goals for the Synners, who only kicked two behinds for the afternoon. Jai Lockwood (5), Nicholas Szabo (4), Roham Walmsley (4), and Nathan Walsh (4) were the major goalkickers for a high-scoring Cobras unit.

Swinburne University’s finals chances are hanging in the balance after a hefty defeat to unbeaten North Brunswick. The Razorbacks were overwhelmed on their home turf, scoring just 3.9 (27) for the match. The Bulls’ potent attack rewarded the club with a 120-point victory, boosting their percentage to 237%.

Simon Woodward punted five for the Bulls, as Matt David, Adrian Sipala and Jacob Lyndon-Farquhar were other multiple goalkickers. Callum Bruce, Justin Burch and Bradley Field were amongst Swinburne’s best. The Razorbacks focus turns to a must-win match with Chadstone in Round 13, with a victory potentially catapulting them back into a finals position.

Albert Park has exacted revenge from its Round 2 loss against Eley Park in a crushing 77-point win. The win provides the Falcons with critical premiership points that leave their slim finals hopes alive.

Albert Park held a solid margin of 25 points at halftime, with an inaccurate second quarter allowing the Sharks to remain within touching distance. However, superb defence drove the Falcons towards victory, with Eley Park held goalless in the third term, and to just nine second-half points. A quick flurry of fourth quarter goals ultimately put the game to bed, the Falcons recording their fourth win of 2024 as the final siren sounded.

There were exciting glimpses from the Sharks, including a two-goal first half by Sehath Alwis, majors to Cam Walkinshaw and dash-and-dare from Matt Gallagher.

Joshua Beets, Sam Campbell and Timothy Phillips each had three goals to their name for the Falcons, as Joshua Rennie was best-on.

A top-of-the-table clash and must-wins for clubs on the verge of finals highlight an epic upcoming Round 13.

Already anticipated to be a blockbuster clash in the mid-season review, North Brunswick and St John’s now coincidentally sit in first and second. If St John’s can learn from their 11-point Round 2 loss to the Bulls, North Brunswick’s unbeaten streak could end this weekend.

Richmond Central host Canterbury in another chance to stake their claim to the competition. A loss could also potentially see them fall out of the top-five if other results go against their favour. Will the Snakes stand up to the challenge?

A do-or-die match against Box Hill North presents Albert Park next week, with a win leaving them in the vicinity of a top-five spot. After recording back-to-back wins against Chadstone and Eley Park, the Demons will be aiming to return to form after a heavy loss to St John’s.

Eley Park host La Trobe University, who return from a two-week bye. A surprisingly high-stakes match, as a loss for the Trobers will leave them well behind the pack in the hunt for finals.

Swinburne University travel to Chadstone, with a win for the Razorbacks possibly placing them back in the top-five. Power House have the bye.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

Old Brighton stunned as De La Salle dominate

Round 12 of the Holmesglen Under 19’s Premier season encapsulated the closeness of the teams, and the immense young talent that brims within this competition.

Opening the weekend, Williamstown CYMS triumphed over a disappointing Old Xaverians outfit.

Holding a lead for a majority of the contest, the boys from Williamstown put together a well-rounded effort to outlast their opposition, going on to win by 22 points.

Kobe Williams was the standout for Williamstown, whilst Andreas Martinez, Xavier Snelling and Cade Galea were important in the win.

Heading into the latter part of the season, it is vital for Old Xavs to recapture their once impressive form and reinstate themselves as contenders as finals looms on the horizon. Cruz McAuliffe was strong in the loss.

Old Scotch continued their winning ways, overpowering Beaumaris with ease.

From the opening siren, it was always going to be Old Scotch’s day, running rampant from the first bounce in a 4 goal to 1 first quarter.

Concluding as 106-point victors, Old Scotch continue to build momentum. Elliot Power was named best afield, whilst Henry Dixon, Aiden Brien and Will Darcy impressed.

Spencer Hunter was elusive down forward, finishing his day with five majors.

With the loss, the Sharks fall to last position on the ladder, behind De La Salle only by percentage. Max Newman-Morris toiled hard in the resounding loss.

Perhaps the most shocking result of the season, De La Salle have announced themselves as a genuine threat, downing Caulfield Grammarians by 77-points.

After tallying their first win, De La Salle have yet again reaped the rewards for their hard work, dominating their opposition at Waverley oval.

Holding Caulfield goalless for a majority of the opening half, the De La defence was most impressive. Luke Lyngberg was important, whilst James Harper, Joel Tyquin and Josh Cumberlidge performed well.

James Hill and Brodie Perry remained as the shining light for Caulfield.

In another shocking result, University Blues put ladder–leaders Old Brighton to the sword.

A fairly even tussle in the opening stages of the game, the Blues soon took over, entering the main break with a four-goal lead. Such ascendancy would result in a 62-point victory.

George McCulloch and Lachie Francis steered the side to victory, whilst Max Diffey, Johnny Pring, Luca Di Lallo and Oliver Williams all had standout games.

For the opposition, sibling pair Maxwell Langworthy and Andrew Langworthy were prominent. The loss has brought the Brighton boys back to the pack of teams vying for finals, now just a single game clear atop the ladder.

The final game of Saturday’s schedule saw St Kevin’s outlast St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Mentone reserve. Liam Edwards, Oscar white, Lucas May and Benjamin Palmer were impressive in the 34-point win.

A round of shock performances, the competition is fast evolving into one where anyone can win, at any given time.

Round 13 comes after a two-week bye and some muchneeded respite for teams bleeding numbers at this point of the year. When sides return to compete in Round 13, it will be the ladder leaders Old Brighton coming up against the trailing De La Salle, only as of late De La are looking red-hot whilst the Tonners have been rather shaky.

The Uni Blues will look to continue their winning ways against Beaumaris, while Old Xaverians will hope to find their best form when they face Caulfield Grammarians, with both sides looking to climb out of the middle order.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will have their hands full when they host an Old Scotch side who are brimming with confidence. And the final matchup of the round will see Williamstown CYMS play the steadily building St Kevin’s.

Joel Chilcott (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

Congratulations Joel on reaching 50 games. ‘Chili’ has been an unbelievable player for our club in his short career. Thriving in his second year of Senior Football, even though he’s still eligible for the U19s, Chili was an integral member of our Division 1 2023 Premiership holding down centre-half-forward. A versatile forward or midfield bull, Chili is developing into a terrific young man that we are proud to have at the Gryphons. We look forward to Chili being a dominant force at Packer Park for years to come.

Fi Adinata (South Melbourne Districts)

50

Fi started her footy story at South Melbourne back in 2018. From a footy perspective Fi was able to reap the rewards of her efforts in 2019, when she was able to grow her game to another level; being named BOG 6 times from 11 games. A short stint at Richmond Central was interrupted by a traumatic injury while on vet-school placement which left Fi with a few badly broken bones; and dashed dreams of ever getting onto the field again. She would have to recover and rehab diligently if she was ever going to kick a footy again; and that she did. 2023 ended with her finding her form from year’s prior; and being voted in as the groups most courageous player by the end of the season. Her footy talent is undeniable; but it’s who she is as a person that has really endeared her to everyone at the Districts. We are so blessed and proud to have Fi running out in that red and white jumper for a 50th time this weekend.

Jack Anderson (Old Geelong)

100

100

Old Geelong Club legend Jack Anderson reaches game 100 this weekend. Complementary to this playing milestone, Jack will be elevated to Life Member of the club. He is an elite outside footballer with a unique ability to only ever handball. After a stint at St Kevin’s OB at the start of his playing career, Jack has been in and around the OG’s for the past 7 years. Congratulations Jack on this incredible achievement!

Will Richter (University Blues)

Congratulations to Will Richter (University Blues U19) on reaching his 100-game milestone this weekend. This is his first season with Uni Blues, having played his junior footy at Flemington Juniors where he collected many awards including 2 club best & fairest, as well as a Western Region League runner up best & fairest as an U16. His ability to read the play is excellent, he will run all day to support his team mates and has a competitive, yet skilful and fair approach to the contest. Well done Will on reaching this milestone with your new team and hoping there’s more to come!

Mitchell Bateman (St Bernards)

100

100

Congrats to Mitch Bateman on his 100th VAFA game for the club. Mitch joined St Bernards U19s from Maribyrnong Park. Moving into open age ranks Mitch established strong form in the Ressies line up making his Senior debut in 2022. A member of the Ressies 2023 Premiership team Mitch has mixed Senior and Ressies footy this year. We look forward to Mitch continuing his improvement into 2024 and beyond. Well done Mitch!

Tom Andriske (St Kevin’s OB)

Congratulations to Tom Andriske on playing his 100th game for SKOB this weekend! Tom, together with his younger brothers Jack and James, is part of the Andriske Foundation. Tom joined SKOB in 2017 and was a member of that year’s U19 Reserve Grade Premiership team that defeated DLS in the Grand Final by 10 goals! Tom also won the U19 reserves league B&F that year!! After 38 U19 games, Tom moved to the Reserves in 2019 and that is where he will play his 100th game for SKOB on Saturday.

Michael Bannan (Ormond)

Banno joined Ormond in the juniors before moving into open age football with the club as a ruckman with his group of mates in 2013. He made his senior debut in 2014 and played in the Thirds Grand Final in 2023. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond on reaching this milestone.

Molly McFarlane (Monash Blues)

Congratulations to premiership captain, two-time premiership player and elite full forward, Molly McFarlane who becomes one of the first Women’s players to reach the 100-game milestone at the Monash Blues Football Club. Molly is a pioneer of the Women’s Program, playing in the inaugural team in 2017. A well-loved member of the club Molly is known for her unparalleled read on the game, silky skills and a crafty goal from any angle. This year Molly has also taken on the position of Reserves Coach showing her ongoing commitment to the program. Thank you, Molly, for all you’ve done for the club, and a huge congratulations on this historic achievement.

Zack Harris (University Blacks)

100

Zach (Hack) Harris plays his 150th game for the Uni Blacks this weekend. Since joining the Under 19s in 2014, Hack has established himself as an ever-reliable stalwart of the club with unrivalled commitment and passion for the Blacks. A hard-nosed contested midfielder-turned-defender with pinpoint skills (provided the skills do not extend beyond 30 metres) Hack has naturally evolved from young blacker (with admittedly veteran-like characteristics) into the wily veteran of the Blacks he was always destined to be. An inspiring role-model both on and off the field for our young squad, we congratulate Hack on reaching the brilliant milestone and look forward to seeing the continuation of Hack’s career at the Blacks.

Eliza Millen (Monash Blues)

100

Congratulations to pioneer Eliza Millen on becoming one of the first Women’s players to reach 100 games at the Monash Blues Football Club. A member of the inaugural Women’s team in 2017, Eliza is a two-time premiership defender. Known for her strong on field leadership, elite right foot and shut down defence, Eliza has established herself as a pillar in the backline. Aside from her talents on the field, Eliza has contributed significantly to the running of the club through her role on the committee. The club and Women’s Program would not be what it is today without Eliza’s time and effort. Congratulations on an incredible achievement and creating history this weekend!

Joel Comito (St Bernards)

150

Best Wishes to Joel Comito on his 150th VAFA game this week. A St Bernards Junior, Joel progressed through U19’s and continued his development into Reserves ranks before making his Senior debut last season. Joel and was a member of the all conquering ’23 Ressies Premiership side and capped off the year by being Runner Up Ressies B&F. We look forward to seeing Joel rack up many more at ‘the Pit’. Well done Joel!

Xavier Cox (St Bernards)

150

Congrats to Xavier Cox on his 150th VAFA game. A St Bernards Junior Coxy progressed through Under 19s footy to become a regular in our Ressies line up. After occasional appearances In recent seasons and a long unavailable list Coxy pulled on the boots to help out the Thirds and in doing so finally racked up the 150 last week. Well done Coxy!
