SEASON 2022 - July 23
EDITORIAL Jason Reddick CEO
It’s been a cold Melbourne winter to date and it has no doubt tested the resolve of many a player, umpire or volunteer to continue to “get down to the Club” and put in the hard yards on the track.
talent (on paper) are often outplayed by a more committed team with a greater will to win. There is never such a thing as a guaranteed win in the run home to the finals!
As we pass the mid-winter period there are a variety of scenarios facing our VAFA Clubs.
For the majority of the Women’s clubs (Premier B through to Division 3) this weekend marks the final round of the home and away season, and there is no doubt the opportunity to secure a finals spot will be keenly contested across all these divisions.
For the Men’s competitions, we head into the final third of the season. The traditional structure of the VAFA competition ensures the majority of teams will continue to have much at stake in these remaining games. The will to secure a top two position (and a finals double chance) across the Divisions is tight at the top: William Buck Premier – St Kevins, Old Brighton and Old Melburnians all are equal on 9 wins apiece Premier B – Uni Blacks with 11 wins lead Beaumaris in second with 9 and Old Haileybury close behind Premier C – Monash and Hampton Rovers are level on 12 wins with additional rounds to be played Division 1 – PEGS & Kew are level on 11 wins Division 2 – Ivanhoe AFC on 12 wins, lead West Brunswick and Old Paradians on 10 wins each
The traditional structure of the VAFA competition ensures the majority of teams will continue to have much at stake in these remaining games.
The fact that, due to COVID impacts, this will be the first VAFA finals series held since 2019, I’m sure provides additional inspiration for many. As per previous years, we again face challenges outside of our control (Council renovations, AFLW games) in securing independent finals venues. Therefore, in many instances, the higher ranked women’s team will have the added incentive of being able to host a home final in the lead up finals matches.
For those supporters of the Women’s game, I recommend you tune in to the VAFA Women’s Podcast, “Inside the Boundary” hosted by Lucy Watkin and Eliza Wright as they dissect, discuss and analyse the VAFA Women’s competition and conduct interviews with the key players and coaches.
Division 3 – South Melbourne 10 wins, Canterbury 9 and Elsternwick 8 Division 4 – La Trobe, Swinburne and St Johns are within a win of each other
Finally, a quick shout out to Fitzroy Football Club who are hosting a Pride themed game featuring their senior women’s team against Yarra Old Grammarians this Saturday. A great inclusive event which I look forward to joining later in the afternoon.
Below these leaders are another couple of teams looking to secure that same double chance. And then there are those Clubs aiming to secure a top 4 finals spot; or desperately avoid relegation, which can often lead to ‘upset’ results on the home stretch. Season form and player
As always, I hope everyone continues to Enjoy the Footy!

Toss the coin and hope for the best this weekend Going Bayside, Old Brighton will welcome Old Xaverians to Brighton Beach Oval. While the weather might be cold and frosty, on the field will be anything but that. These two sides don’t like one another.
What a fascinating weekend of William Buck Premier football we are set up for this Saturday. The opportunities that await St Kevin’s, Old Melburnians and Old Brighton to pull away from the rest of the competition rest solely on their own shoulders.
The red and black mafia will be driving out there still biting the bottom lip after the Round 2 defeat in the dying seconds earlier this year against the Tonners. However, they head to BBO confident that if they can produce what they did last year out there, silence the red and blue crowd early, they’re going to be in for a good day.
For Old Trinity, Uni Blues and Old Xaverians, it’s on them to bring the front running three back to the pack. All games this weekend are genuine toss of the coin contests.
Old Brighton must win to keep in touch with Old Melburnians and St Kevin’s, Old Xaverians must win to keep Collegians at bay and stay inside the top 4. The repercussions for the loser could prove costly in the long run, but for now we’re just going to enjoy the fact that we’re talking about mouthwatering contests like this instead of being told to lock up and stay home, as we were this time 12 months ago.
Away from those six sides, perhaps the most fascinating game this weekend is “the middle of the table” Old Scotch playing host to Collegians at Camberwell Sports Park. The Purple Army are on the march, given the events of the previous fortnight and findings handed down to University Blues, their season has gone from more than a light pulse to a strong heartbeat with finals in real contention. Dave Mirra and his counterparts have won four games in a row, they come to ‘the cave’ ready to make it five.
Old Melburnians are the next team to ‘feel the wrath’ of University Blues. Satts’ men are back on home soil at Elsternwick Park for this one and don’t need to read this column to know the importance of walking away with a W next to their name. Since losing to Blues in Round 6 they’ve lost one game to the ladder leaders St Kevin’s and playing the best footy they have as a team unit in a long time.
What stands in their way is a young, brash, confident Old Scotch who come into the contest having slayed the Uni Blues beast for the second time this season. Should they be fortunate enough to play with the same 22 this week, it’s going to be a challenge for the travelling Lions to upstage the Cardinals at home.
The most pleasing aspect is that they’re producing that high quality, week in, week out. And not at random intervals.
What we know for sure is that we’re in for a ripper day on RSN Carnival covering this one. Caulfield Grammarians make the road trip out to the Snakepit. A win for the Fields will almost certainly dispel any murmurings of potential relegation. They last made the trek out to St Bernard’s in Round 6 of 2021 and triumphed comfortably. Simon ‘Punchy’ Williams will be hoping for more of the same.
Uni Blues had their fire blown out by Old Scotch after half time last week, and never really got into gear. They come to the wide expanses of VAFA HQ with a knowledge of how to play this ground. Sam Grimley has the chance to extend his stay at the top of the sharpshooters list while OM’s come up with ways to cover the loss of Oskar Hosking in defence.
The Snowdogs are battling, scoring has been an issue all season long. Against Caulfield at Glen Huntly earlier this year, they managed to kick their second highest score of the season with the game in the balance before falling away. If ever there was a time for an upset victory and cut a run of 9-straight losses, this could be the one. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

A fortnight ago, Blues would’ve come into this contest fighting for a spot in the top 4, now they’re coming in fighting for a spot in William Buck Premier. A game of importance for OM’s and their finals aspirations, is even more important for the Blues and where they stand to finish in 2022. St Kevin’s certainly will feel confident coming home to T H King this weekend against Old Trinity, but certainly shouldn’t treat them as easybeats. They only need to be 1% off on Saturday and leave the door slightly ajar for the T’s to run straight through it. Last weekend’s against the odds loss to Collegians may be the prod they need after the double bye to realise the importance of being switched on at every juncture of the season. It’s been said by every coach, nearly every week in William Buck Premier. There are no easy games and this is no exception. Old Trinity have put together very good football for minutes of quarters, and then quarters of games, the challenge has been maintaining it for four full quarters. While for St Kevin’s, this weekend will be all about tightening the screws further on the 18-man defensive zone, and kicking accurately in front of goal. We’ve got the gold minted coin out ready to be tossed in the air for all of these games this weekend. Lucky number 13 is the round, will the coin fall the way of those sides who are considered “against the odds” or will it go the way of the “favourites”. The way it’s going, the coin could well land on its side. And yet again, we’d be none the wiser.

Beaumaris remain bridesmaids while Tigers bounce back from a five game drought The cream rose to the top in Premier B Men’s round 12 as teams set out to solidify their spot on the ladder. In a nailbiting top-of-the-table clash, the Uni Blacks overpowered Beaumaris by 38 points meanwhile Fitzroy kept their finals hopes alive, defeating AJAX by 12 points. St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers broke their dry spell in their victory over De La Salle and Williamstown proved their might against Old Carey.
Mangoni saw SBMT stretch their lead to 33 points, only conceding a minor score. De La’s defensive pressure stepped up in the final term with 250 gamer Sam Williams and William Mackie giving the Tigers a taste of their own medicine. Unfortunately, one final push for victory from Campbell Bedfordand and Michael Schwab proved too late as SBMT held onto their 12-point lead. With a favourable run home for the Tigers, are they a chance to sneak into the top four? Next week will certainly provide some more answers as SBMT verse Old Carey at the Carey Sports Complex. No rest for De La Salle as they face Old Haileybury in round 13. Fresh off a long break, all eyes will be on the Bloods as they must work hard to retain their third position.
The Aquarium played host to an all-important match between the Uni Blacks and Beaumaris. The Sharks were off to a flying start keeping the Blackers to a mere 3 points in the opening term. Connor Murphy and Ben Mathews showed their strength and speed around the ground meanwhile Josh Ward and Connor Murphy capitalised down forward. Despite hard work from key forward Austin Steere, the Sharks remained in front, ahead by 22 points at the halftime siren. The second half saw the Uni Blacks lift, with Campbell Moorfield leading by example, reminding the Blackers of the significance of this battle. Jordan Quaile’s three pivotal goals alongside resolve from James Sansom saw the Uni Blacks grapple the momentum of this game. Even with strong winds effecting accuracy in front of goal, the Uni Blacks proved that they are the team to beat, with a final score of 13.1795 to 8.9-57. It is likely this game solidifies the Uni Blacks on the top of the ladder, needing an upset victory to knock them off their perch. Looking to next week, the Blackers host Fitzroy at Melbourne University Oval meanwhile The Sharks head to Gary Smorgon Oval to face AJAX.
In an all-around team effort, Fitzroy were able to settle their score against AJAX. Fitzroy made the most of their home ground, as Jack Wotherspoon and Daniel Megennis moved the ball exceptionally from end to end. Ted Clayton was firing on all cylinders with his two key goals and forward line accuracy. Heath Ramshaw also brought the heat, aiding the Roys to keep control of the ball at each stoppage. AJAX were determined to claw their way back into the game in the third term as Kane Nissenbaum and Nicholas Lewis and their determination provided pivotal momentum for the Jackers. Composure and leadership from Jack Hart ultimately kept the Jackers at bay resulting in a 12-point victory being awarded to the Roys. Both teams have lots to prove in the coming weeks, with the rat race for 4th sport just getting started. Round 13 will certainly not make it easy for either side as Fitzroy will come up against the Uni Blacks and AJAX verse Beaumaris.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers silenced the neigh sayers this week after triumphing over De La Salle. SBMT got to work at Brindisi Oval, hungry to change the tide of their last five games. Michael Barnes solidified himself as an asset for the Tigers as did Ben Goodchild with his composure through the forward line. An exceptional third quarter and an increased intensity from Christopher

Williamstown CYMS secure themselves another four points in their 54-point victory against Old Carey. Old Carey remained competitive in the first quarter trailing by 4 points. Anthony Caminiti played his role in font of goals alongside Daniel Clarke in his 50 th game for the Panthers. A healthy breeze saw Williamstown run away with the game, heading into the half time break in front by 44 points. Daly Andrews earned his stripes, with his exceptional debut meanwhile an outstanding six goals Jack Noonan secured his spot amongst CY’s best. Efforts from Liam Conway and Bradley Tucker kicking 2 and 4 respectively contributed to Williamstown’s victory with a final score of 18.13-121 to Old Carey 10.7-67. With uncertainty surrounding regrading, can Williamtown end the year on a high note and avoid relegation? Their round 13 bye will certainly help their case and give them time to prepare to face the premiership contenders in the coming weeks. Unfortunately for Old Carey its back to the drawing board, as they look forward to St Bedes/Mentone Tigers next week.

Top four continue winning ways in Premier C Men’s Premier C Men’s rolled into round 15, with the top four teams collecting wins on what was difficult conditions for footy.
around the ground in the final quarter but unfortunately the scores didn’t quite come quickly enough, and while the Ivanhoe boys kicked the only four goals of the final term they finished 19 points short. The key forwards went well, with Chris Hatzis kicking five for Old Geelong and Daniel Stanford responding in kind for Old Ivanhoe. Bailey Austin and Scott Dixon led the way for Old Geelong, while Jake Bradley and Nick Vacirca were strong for Old Ivanhoe.
For the second week running the equal-top Hampton Rovers made things difficult for themselves with their profligacy in front of goal, but had a relatively comfortable win regardless. The first half was competitive – Ormond battled well to keep the Rovers to four goals whilst kicking three themselves. It was after half time that Hampton dominated, but they only managed to put a paltry 2.13 on the scoreboard in the difficult conditions. Thankfully for them their defence was strong enough to hold Ormond to 2.2 in reply, and this allowed Hampton Rovers a 19-point victory, but they will want to be fixing their finishing with the big matches little more than a month away. James Keys and spearhead Ben Marron kicked two goals each for Hampton, with Max van der Straaten their best. Ormond had five individual goal kickers, with the consistent Dae Szydlik a strong contributor on the day.
For the Parkdale Vultures boys to topple the joint leaders, they needed to make a good start against Monash Blues and continue that throughout the day. They ticked the first box to a degree, keeping Monash to three points in the first term, but were only able to register 1.5 themselves. Monash rebounded with four goals to one in the second term to lead by 14 at the half, and kept the pressure on to extend their lead to 25 at the final change. Parkdale were still in the contest if they started swiftly, but the Blues kept control in the final quarter, kicking 5.7 to a goal to register a relatively comfortable 56 point victory and take top spot on percentage. Monash had a big winner on the forward line in Nick Darling, who kicked five goals, with Nick Argento also strong. Parkdale had four single goal kickers, with Lloyd Bailey and Jarrod Peake their best.
Mazenod were in complete control of this match after a competitive first quarter in which they kicked the only goal. Indeed, Marcellin were kept goalless for the whole first half as Mazenod led by 33 points at the main break. The Eagles came out after half time breathing fire, taking the game right up to the high-flying Mazenod but could not make any indentation on the scoreboard, only kicking one goal from their nine shots for the quarter, but Mazenod were able to steady to win the quarter by a point and lead by 34 at the final change. Any hope of a Marcellin fourth quarter challenge failed to materialise, and they cleared out to a comfortable 53 point win. Nick Pascuzzi kicked three goals for Mazenod, for whom Fletcher Ford and Liam Welsford played well. Marcellin’s best Pat Howe and Matthew Capetola were their goal kickers, with Adam Tomaro also strong for them.
Preston Bullants started this match with a ferocious attack on the ball and the man that held it, hoping to take a solid lead to the first break, but Old Mentonians converted all of their early opportunities to lead by two at quarter time. The Panthers took control in the second quarter to kick 4.6 without reply and lead by 32 at half time, and there was no way back from there. Whilst the Bullants kept Old Mentonians to two goals in the third stanza to give them some hope, a seven goal to one final term gave Old Mentonians a handy percentage boost and a 73 point win. Preston had no answer to Tom Morecroft’s six goals, and Angus Grant and Jai Florent were also good for the Panthers. Conor Howard kicked two of Preston’s four goals, with Luke Sutton and James King their best.
Old Geelong looked like they were going to register the biggest win of the season at half time, kicking 11 goals to Old Ivanhoe’s one to lead by 59 points. I’m not sure what was in the oranges in the home dressing rooms but they stopped as if shot in the second half, only registering a single score, a goal. Old Ivanhoe started eating into the deficit, reducing the margin to 43 at three quarter time to give them a glimmer of hope. They continued winning THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

VAFA Club’s get behind TAC Road Safety Round It was fantastic to see so many VAFA club’s show their support for AFL Victoria and TAC’s Road Safety Round last weekend. Players and officials wore blue armbands - the aim is to use these armbands to help create awareness and encourage community discussion about our mission to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads. Social media was awash with Road Safety Round content and for their effort, club’s will receive funding from TAC. This year marks 31 years of the TAC and AFL Victoria working together to speak to Victorians about road safety in order to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the roads.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Alanah Strode (St Bede’s Mentone Tigers) The VAFA congratulates Alanah Strode on being nominated the Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star this week. Alanah has come on in leaps and bounds since joining St Bede’s Mentone Tigers during the most recent off-season and has settled in nicely under the guidance of coach Belinda Ousley. What the club said: After a successful junior career, including a League Best and Fairest and Interleague honours, Alanah ‘Larni’ Strode joined St Bede’s Mentone Tigers during the 2022 pre-season. ‘Larni’ is a quiet achiever, but her hard work and attitude at training quickly made her a popular team member. Larni has played every game in 2022, mainly as a half forward. Larni has great football awareness and is a completely selfless player. Each week she chases down opponents, has running bounces, and is a master of goal assists. Her game against Hawthorn demonstrated her consistency in applying these skills. We are so proud of Larni and feel lucky to have such a wonderful player and person at our club.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Tyler Sellers (Old Scotch) The VAFA congratulates Tyler Sellers from Old Scotch who has been nominated as the weekends Rising Star. Sellers has flourished under the guidance of Cardinals coach Mark Gnatt is season 2022, so far playing every game and kicking 15 goals. What the club said: The 19 year old joined the club from Scotch College in 2021, spending his first year in the Men’s under 19s, playing 10 matches and kicking 18 goals. Tyler made an impressive Men’s Premier ‘A‘ section debut vs Collegians in Round 11, kicking a goal, in the last match before COVID-19 ended the season. Tyler has been a regular in the Men’s Premier ‘A‘ section in 2022, playing all 12 matches, predominately forward, kicking 15 goals. However Tyler occasionally has been asked to trouble shoot in different roles around the ground. Tyler is a great young man from a wonderful family and we believe he has a great football future at VAFA Premier ‘A Section and beyond that.

Is the top 4 locked and loaded in Division 1? For now, looking back at the weekend, after a goalless first quarter they took advantage of the wind at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve to take a lead at half time. And press on from there. Ben Hart has kicked goals in every game as part of last month, giving himself the confidence to mix it with the best. He’s on track to have his best output of goals for the season (currently 22, 2021 - 24).
Old Camberwell continue to press their case and keep as close as they can to the top four however Oakleigh maintain a 2-game gap on the Wellers. PEGS, Glen Eira, and Kew are the other three sides taking residence in the top three and with the formline of these sides suggest the top four may already be locked and loaded with a month to go in the home and away season.
The Lions were unable to capitalise and take advantage of conditions during the third term and after a terrific fortnight came back to earth with a thud.
Glen Eira have steadied their ship after losing before the bye. Prahran-Assumption threw everything at them in the opening half. 11-goals to two after half-time handed them a 65 point victory to stay within reach of Kew. Sitting one game behind but far greater percentage, it’s going to be a fascinating month for the Gryphons in pursuit of a top two finish.
The top of the table clash was owned by PEGS and Jack Fenner who slammed home 7-goals as part of the 37 point win. The boys from Essendon have kicked a staggering 1238 points for the season, while only conceding 542 points. They’re a brick wall in defence with Kew having genuine trouble breaking through as the afternoon wore on.
Prahran-Assumption heads back to Toorak Park for the next fortnight with games to come against Oakleigh and St Mary’s Salesian. Wins will keep them within striking distance of the top four.
The loss ends a run of 9-straight victories for Kew. While they may see it as a blemish against the top side, it could leave them vulnerable for a double chance finish.
Old Camberwell have won three games in a row, four wins from their last five matches and staying in touch with Oakleigh, one slip-up by the Krushers and the Wellers will be ready to pounce. Their next fortnight pins them against the Gryphons and Oakleigh. It’ll be a mouthwatering contest in Round 15.
Oakleigh had little trouble against St Mary’s Salesian, winning by 118 points to add a healthy 13% to their column in fourth spot. Aaron Cloke (10) produced double figures for the first time since Round 8 of 2019 (14 vs. Old Paradians). 56 goals for the season so far. With five games to go, is the 100 too far gone? The run home for Oakleigh pins them against PrahranAssumption (6th), Old Camberwell (5th), Kew (2nd) and PEGS (1st). It’s a tough draw, but the Krushers are primed and ready to thrive against the heat they’ll come up against.

The closest game of the round came at Whitefriars college with Whitefriars holding out Old Peninsula by 11 points. The margins at the breaks never got beyond a goal until the final siren with the Friars holding the lead at every change. Daniel Wood (4) took his tally to 46 goals for the year for the Friars, while George Fletcher kicked four in just his second senior game for the Pirates. The lost month has been tough for Old Peninsula with four consecutive losses. It’s a tough rough ahead this weekend when they face the ladder leaders PEGS but have a chance to set a cat amongst the pigeons if they’re able to come out on top.

Who’s going to break the streaks? The 185% is far superior to the Old Paradians in third and at this point of the season could be the major factor in them gaining a double chance in September should these top three sides continue the trajectory they’re on.
The top three sides in Division 2 are looking like worldbeaters at the moment. At present, Ivanhoe AFC (1st) are on an 11-game winning streak. West Brunswick (2nd) have won six in a row while Old Paradians (3rd) have turned their fortunes around with 8 consecutive victories.
Power House will be hoping their fortunes turn around this coming weekend coming up against Manningham Cobras. The two sides met in Round 9 with Power House claiming the points in a classic. Will they repeat the dose or do the Cobras have some venom left?
Unless there’s a draw this Saturday between the Hoers and Old Parade. For one of these sides, the streak will end. Before we look ahead, let’s look back to Round 13 where Ivanhoe AFC continued to dance to their own beat handing out a football lesson to Yarra Old Grammarians by 72 points. Ash Close has taken his season tally to 44 goals after another bag of eight, to follow on with his eight majors before the bye. Michael Doyle ruled, named the best man on the ground.
Manningham came up against a MHSOB side that desperately needed to win. The Unicorns lost four of their past five games (all against the top four sides) to stay in touch with the top four, this was a contest they couldn’t let slip. 6-goals with the breeze in the first term gave them a solid platform to start the day. The margin extended at every interval against the Cobras to come away 85 point winners. They add another 9% to their tally and remain a game behind Brunswick. Julian Eimutis is the barometer for the Unicorns this year. When he fires, they fire.
The Bushrangers fought valiantly during the second term against the Hoers but the dam wall burst after half-time conceding 10-goals to three. Rory Chipman (3) has been a shining light for them throughout this season. Yarra Old Grammarians’ challenges don’t ease up as they play host to West Brunswick on Saturday. Could they be the one to end the Magpies streak?
They have the opportunity to make it two in a row facing Bulleen Templestowe this weekend.
West Brunswick set up the thumping victory over Power House with an 8-goal opening quarter at Ransford Oval. With the aid of the breeze Power House came back at them in the second term before Ben Hutchins (6) and the Magpies got on top again after half-time to pull away to an unassailable lead.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
The Ants will be ruing opening half misses against Brunswick that saw them sitting on 1.7.13 trailing by 45 points and the game effectively over. Jasper Paevere (3) and Kane Daly (3) led the way up forward for the Wick’s. They, like MHSOB, needed to win after three straight losses.

Old Paradians haven’t looked back after a shaky start to 2022. The streak of eight wins started against Aquinas in Round 6 and the momentum has continued. The margin could have been dramatically greater had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal. And while in the end the margin was 59 points, the club would be most impressed in being able to hold Aquinas to 4-goals for the afternoon. Goalless in both the second and third quarters. As mentioned at the top. They have the chance to go nine in a row this week, Ivanhoe AFC are looking at 12. 2 o’clock at Garvey Oval is the place to be for this blockbuster clash.

Finals Door Still Ajar for Most of Division 3 Men’s remain the story for the game, with the Bloods unable to get their noses in front. Justin Raiti kicked four of Hawthorn’s five goals, with William Meehan their other goalkicker, and James Betlehem their best. For South Melbourne Districts, the divisional goalkicker Oliver Dufficy was kept goalless, but in his absence, his brother Michael Dufficy kicked two, and Scott Moran was best-on.
VAFA footy returned on the weekend, and Division 3 Men’s returned with a vengeance. Melbourne provided arguably arctic conditions that got even colder over the course of the day, with many donning the long sleeves to try and combat the wind. Said wind wreaked relative havoc on the scoreboard for most teams as most goals to points ratios skewed to the latter. It was an unfortunate day for South Melbourne Districts, who suffered their second loss of the year against a misfiring Hawthorn side, though the Bloods still have their name on top of the ladder. Canterbury also suffered a shock loss, failing to get up over Parkside, while North Brunswick’s win over Emmaus St Leo’s makes the ladder very interesting as eight teams can still potentially play finals in 2022.
Eleven individual-goalkickers has seen Richmond Central take down a tough Westbourne Grammarians side by 74 points at Westbourne Grammar. The Warriors kept the door slightly ajar for the better part of the game, scoring consistently to be in it, but it was the eight-goal final term that sealed the deal for the Snakes. For the away side, Jack Bilson (5), Damien Holland (3), Dane Roy (3), Justin Perillo (2), and Jordan Miller (2) were Richmond Central’s multiple-goalscorers, but it was Stephen Dodd (1) who took top honours. Benjamin Hodge was the Westbourne Grammarians’ best, while Jordan Doyle (4), Ali Eqbal (2), and Maxmillian Gallo Paspa (2) were the targets in the forward line.
A low-scoring affair at a bitterly cold Bennettswood Reserve has seen North Brunswick beat Emmaus St Leo’s by just five points. It was all Bulls for pretty much most of the day as they got out of the blocks and kept the home side scoreless for the first quarter, before the Animals got on the board in the second. It was in the third term that North Brunswick set the scene, and despite zero inside 50s in the final term and a late rally from Emmaus St Leo’s, the away side held on to get their fourth win of the season. Jonathan Greensides (3) was the Animals’ best, with Leiwyn Jones, Kieren Jenkins and Nathan Bird their other goalkickers. For the Bulls, Joseph Flynn kicked two majors, but it was Harry Wilson who took top honours.
Canterbury’s expert unbeaten run has come to an end at Canterbury Sportsground, at the hands of Parkside, who left the field 20-point winners. With both sides sharing the goalkicking load, it’s no surprise it was an arm wrestle for much of the game. There was one point in it at the start of the third term before the Red Devils increased the buffer to two goals at the final break, before kicking four majors to seal it in the last. For the Cobras, Thomas Lowden (2) and Mark Collins (2) contributed in front of goal, but it was Michael Topp on top of the best player’s list. Isaac Romano, Lewis Balcombe and Cody Lawson all kicked two each for Parkside, while Michael Romano was best-on.
A Justin Raiti masterclass has seen Hawthorn knock off ladder-leader South Melbourne Districts by two points at Lindsay Hassett Oval, despite wasteful opportunities in front of goal. A tight tussle all day saw the margin fail to get higher than ten points at the breaks, with the Hawks on top early. It would THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

For the second week in a row, the Westbourne Grammarians will stay home at Westbourne Grammar and take on Emmaus St Leo’s. The Animals will be on the hunt for a big win after a pretty dismal middle half of the year, while the Warriors might fancy their chances after a competitive round thirteen. Kevin Bartlett Reserve will be home to the battle between Richmond Central and Canterbury, with the Cobras no doubt looking for redemption. For the Snakes, they’ll look to consolidate their round thirteen win. Both Parkside and North Brunswick notched wins in their last games so Pitcher Park is the destination for a heated clash between two teams eager to continue good form. Elsternwick return from their bye to a tough ask, travelling to Rathmines Road Reserve to face an arguably in-form Hawthorn outfit. The year has been a rollercoaster and both sides will be looking to this game as a steadier. South Melbourne Districts have their second bye of the year, timed well enough to give them the opportunity to assess the last part of the season after their round thirteen loss.

Albert Park and St John’s get needed wins as Swinburne survive a scare The second match of the round was a 3rd vs 4th clash as St John’s took on Masala in what was set to be a competitive match. The Tigers got off to a stronger start kicking with the wind which led to a 2-goal lead at the first break of the game. The JOCS however were able to rebound in the second responding with 4 goals whilst keeping Masala goalless to take a 12-point lead into halftime.
Round 13 didn’t offer too many surprises for the viewer yet rather gave us a glimpse of the remaining rounds to come. Things to pay attention to is the battle between the top 3 and who misses out on the double chance and the battle for 4th between Masala and Albert Park. In the first match of round 13 in Division 4 Men’s, Box Hill North took on Albert Park in a match where a win for either team could be season-changing. The Falcons once again managed to get off to another strong start going 5 goals ahead, however inaccurate kicking prevented a bigger lead. The Demons won the second quarter kicking 3 goals to 1 but failed to take the lead as they went into the main break down by 19 points.
The third quarter saw an even 25 minutes as the JOCS were able to combat the wind to win the quarter kicking 3 goals to the Tigers’ 2. Heading into the 4th quarter down by 17, Masala would need to give it all they had kicking against the wind. In the end, however, it wasn’t meant to be as St John’s was able to add on 3 goals whilst once again keeping the Tigers goalless to finish the match with a 37-point win, securing their spot in the finals in the process.
The third quarter saw the Falcons fly ahead kicking 5 goals whilst keeping the Demons goalless to extend their lead out to 47 points. Although the final quarter saw more even football it was the Falcons that were able to leave with a 50-point win, putting pressure on Masala for the final spot in the top 4 in the process.
Ethan Hope, Benjamin Ayache and Damien Wilsnach were amongst the best for St Johns whilst Masala’s best included Christian Samuel, Anthony Dorrington and Brandon Kelly. Rohan Scott (3), Nicolas Terrill (2) and Corey Ely (2) led the way in front of goals for the JOCs . Tiger Declan Fowler kicked 2 goals whilst Jake Dunkley, Amir Bou-Karroum, Anthony Dorrington and Shehan Rodrigo kicked a goal each for Masala.
The best for the Demons were Cameron Liston, Rowan Lawrence and Beau Parthenides. The best for the Falcons were Sam Lee, Christopher Marson and Matt Pihkanen. Beau Parthenides and Thomas Cheslett both kicked 2 goals for the Demons. Reece FrenchLightfoot had a day out for the Falcons with 5 majors, other contributors included Alexander Evans (2) and Jack Lee (2).
St John’s will now face Albert Park who will be coming into the match hungry for a win. Masala will look to get back on the winners list as they take on an alwaysgame Box Hill North outfit.
Box Hill North will now look to rebound as they face a similar test in Masala. Albert Park will host St John’s who are playing some of their best football at the moment.

The final match of the round saw possibly one of the most unique scorelines this season as Eley Park took on Swinburne in what was set to be a comfortable game for the Razorbacks. The match started off with both teams only managing a goal but an extra 3 behinds saw Eley Park take a 3-point lead into the first 20

break. The sequel was a repeat of the original as both teams only managed to add another goal but once again, extra behinds saw the Sharks extend their lead out to 5 points at halftime. The third quarter was once again a slow 25 minutes as the Razorbacks were able to kick the only goal for the quarter taking a 2-point lead into the final quarter. The fourth quarter saw Swinburne swing the game dramatically kicking 7 goals in the final quarter to escape with a win with what turned out to be a comfortable 49-point win. The best for the Sharks were Ben Field, Daniel O’Shea and Mackenzie Field whilst the best for Swinburne were Brent Hodson, Oliver Mitchell and Zachary Lassey. Eley Parks three goal kickers were Shannon Blewitt, Mackenzie Field and Martin Louey who all kicked a goal each. The leading goalkickers for the Razorbacks were Aidan Vesty, Nick Coad, Trent Ryan and Patrick Johnston who all slotted 2 goals each. Eley Park will now face another tough challenge as they make the trip to face La Trobe. Swinburne will now have the bye before returning in round 15 to take on La Trobe. La Trobe who had the bye will now take on Eley Park in what should be a win for the Trobers but anything is possible in division 4 footy.

MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Connor O’Brien (Ivanhoe AFC)
50
Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates star wingman Connor O’Brien on his 50th game in Round 13. Connor, aka Cobe, is enjoying another great season with the Hoers and had the rare honour of featuring on the cover of the Amateur Footballer on July 2. It’s little wonder he captured the photographer’s eye – Connor covers plenty of turf, plucks heaps of marks and can roost the ball a proverbial mile. He doesn’t mind snagging the odd goal either. Runner-up in the seniors B&F in 2019 and third in the under 19s in 2018 when he was named best team player, Connor always strives to give his all. Keep motoring Connor.
Charlie Wilson (Old Xaverians)
100
Congratulations to Charlie Wilson who plays his 100th game for the club this weekend against Old Brighton as part of the Crocodiles. Charlie joined the club in 2014 via the U19 Premier side, who narrowly missed out on the premiership that season. From there, Charlie joined the U23s where he experienced significant team and individual success, under coaching great Shane Healy. During his time in the U23s Charlie was a premiership player in 2016 and 2019, Best Finals player in 2016, Best and Fairest winner in 2018 and premiership team captain 2018-2019. These achievements culminated in Charlie being named as captain of the U23s Team of the Decade. This is a particularly great achievement given the quality of players who’ve been involved with the U23s throughout this period. Since then, Charlie has joined the Crocodiles and has continued his fearless style of play. His commitment and contributions to the Crocodiles across two COVID-19 interrupted years were recognised by being named team co-captain in 2022. Across his 100 games to date Charlie has been an extremely popular, skilful and courageous player however above all else he has been a brilliant leader. We wish Charlie all the best for the weekend.
Tommy Amad (Old Xaverians)
100
Tommy started playing for the club in 2015 and has represented the club in Seniors, Reserves and Under 19’s. Through his time, Tommy has won premierships with the 2015 U/19 Premier and 2017/2019 reserves. A solid defender with a booming left foot, Tommy has been a great clubman and bought great positivity to the Old Xavs.
Sam Hayes (MHSOB)
200
Congratulations to Sam Hayes on reaching the 200 games milestone for the MHSOBFC. A Melbourne High graduate, Sam has been a core member of the club since he graduated MHS in 2011. One of the first names on the seniors team sheet every week, Sam has reached this point of consistency through years of hard work. A defender that gives his all at every contest while providing dangerous run off the half back, Sam was a member of the 2011 U19s North Team of the Year, he won an U19s BnF in 2012 and was a crucial member of the 2016 Reserves Grand Final win. A beacon of energy off and on the field, Sam drives everyone at the club to achieve their best. Everyone at the club wishes Sam the absolute best for reaching this significant milestone and we look forward to many more great games from him.

Big win for Melbourne Uni sees them take third spot Melbourne Uni weren’t wasting any time in their William Buck Premier Women’s game against St Mary’s Salesian getting themselves on the scoreboard within a few minutes of the siren going. It was all Melbourne Uni from here with St Mary’s Salesian unable to stop the onslaught from Melbourne Uni. As the first quarter went on Melbourne Uni kept the ball out of St Mary’s hands and scored five goals themselves to take a commanding lead early on. In the second quarter, St Mary’s slowed the momentum of Melbourne Uni and were able to keep Melbourne Uni away from the goals for much of the quarter.
To the credit of the Caulfield defence, they were able to limit the damage and keep Kew to just one goal for the quarter. After half time, Kew went on a run and took command of the game, scoring two goals in quick succession and putting Caulfield under pressure all across the ground. From here Kew continued their strong offence, always ahead of Caulfield and taking a 35 point lead into the final term. The momentum continued to stay with Kew for the final term and they were able to keep Caulfield from having any impact on the scoreboard. It was a comfortable win that keeps them holding on strong to second place on the ladder.
It wasn’t until a momentary breakthrough from Melbourne Uni that saw them get another goal in the last part of the quarter. With St Mary’s struggling to get near the goals, Melbourne Uni went into the main break with a very comfortable six goal lead. Melbourne Uni had the pressure going early in the third quarter, converting a turnover from the centre to open the scoring. From here, Melbourne Uni continued to stay one step ahead of St Mary’s, they controlled the play for most of the quarter but didn’t use it to advantage in front of goal. The final term saw Melbourne Uni switch to a more defensive style of play and slow their ball movement down to hold onto their lead. With a win of 55 points, it was a nice percentage boost that saw them finally get hold of third spot on the ladder after chasing it for a few rounds.
St Kevin’s continue to show why they are the inform team of the competition when they came up against Old Xaverians. Old Xaverians showed some strength early on, keeping pace with St Kevin’s in attack. The St Kevin’s offense was doing its best to get their game going but Old Xaverians weren’t giving them the space that they are used to having. This resulted in a close low scoring first term. As they have the ability to do, St Kevin’s found a way to get through the Old Xaverians defence and get to the goals. The second term was a much stronger quarter for St Kevin’s that saw them add two goals to their tally with the wind wreaking havoc on their ability to score any more. In the third, it appeared Old Xaverians had turned the game to their favour, they were winning contests and taking the game straight to St Kevin’s. Old Xaverians had taken control of the ball, all they needed was the goals to really challenge St Kevin’s. The attempts at goal eventually came but with the wind playing such a big part in the game, they were only able to muster two points on the scoreboard. Meanwhile St Kevin’s were still hitting the scoreboard and extended their lead once again. The final term St Kevin’s took control again and played the game to their strengths, running over the top of Old Xaverians. Using the wind to their advantage and getting an early goal to set the tone for the remainder of the game St Kevin’s picked up the pace and ran over the top of Old Xaverians for another big win.
It was second versus third on the ladder when Kew and Caulfield Grammarians faced off against each other. With Caulfield having Melbourne Uni hot on their heels for third spot, it was a must win for them to retain it. It was an even contest for the first quarter with both teams struggling to get clean possession of the ball. It was a tough contest in wintery conditions, but it was Kew who were stronger in offense, getting through traffic and taking some shots at goal but unable to get goals through. After some struggling again through the middle of the ground early in the second term, Kew were able to get the first goal of the match. There was a break in play after an unfortunate incident from a desperate smother and when play did get back on track, Kew were threatening to break open the game. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

When West Brunswick took on Marcellin, it was a game that really could go either way with both teams having an up and down year so far. The teams tousled early on and traded possession of the ball throughout the middle of the ground. West Brunswick were getting more of the ball but were unable to keep possession for the length of the ground to impact the scoreboard. The reward for effort came for West Brunswick with them being the ones to open the scoring for the game. The second quarter followed on from the first with both teams struggling to take control of the game. It was the last line of the Marcellin defence that was working hard to keep them in the contest as the ball was coming into the back half regularly. They had worked hard enough to keep West Brunswick away from goals and go into the halftime break just one point down.

When the second half started, West Brunswick came out firing and quickly put distance between them and Marcellin, in what would be a three goal quarter for West Brunswick that had set them up for a win. In the final term Marcellin were unable to keep up with the momentum that West Brunswick had going. West Brunswick were able to add another two goals to their tally and keep Marcellin to just one point for the quarter. It was a strong performance in the end for West Brunswick who came out 34-point winners.
