The Amateur Footballer 2023 - Week 14

SEASON 2023 - July 29

At the time of writing, the VAFA has exceeded the total number of registered players in the VAFA competition compared to this time last year. How players register and receive a permit to play in the VAFA can come about in many ways and given team player numbers have been a hot topic during the middle part of the season I thought we should share with the VAFA community a summary of what is permitted and not permitted in terms of transfers, permits and registrations in our competition.

The AFL enforces a national transfer window on all leagues and clubs from 12:01am (AEDT) on 1 February to 11:59pm (AEST) on 30 June during the calendar year of the relevant season. It is during this period where a transfer request from one club to another club can be submitted. This year we have seen 3,459 players transfer into the VAFA competition whilst 2,276 players decided to transfer out of the VAFA competition to another league. A transfer request may also be permitted for a player after 30 June in the event that player has not played a match for a period of 24 months or greater.

A permit to play in the VAFA competition is granted upon registration as a player with the Association in the Competition Management Platform (GameDay). A player will either register with their new VAFA club after transferring into the Association or they will re-register with their existing VAFA club.

Similar to the national transfer deadline, registrations are not permitted in the VAFA competition after 30 June. However, in accordance with VAFA Rules, registrations in the Under 19 Men’s competition close on 31 July in each year and a player may register after 30 June if the last club with which they were registered is the VAFA club to which they are seeking registration.

Prior to the start of the 2022 season, the VAFA introduced a new Player Permit Application Process for all Category 5- and 6-point players (ie. VFL and ex-AFL players) transferring into the VAFA. The purpose of the VAFA Player Permit Application Process is to ensure that there is a rigorous and transparent process in place to uphold the VAFA Amateur Status Guidelines.

Across the last two (2) seasons, a total of 28 Category 5- and 6-point players (as well as other players based on their playing history as requested by the Independent Permit Committee) have completed this process prior to being granted a permit to play in the VAFA. A list of players who completed the process this season

is available to view on the Player Transfers sections of the VAFA website.

The Player Permit Application Process is a key operational function of the Independent Permit Committee who as per VAFA Rules are empowered to cancel the permit of a player if they believe that player has infringed their Amateur Status. Strengthening our ability to protect the Amateur Status of our competition is a key activity featured in the VAFA’s new Strategic Plan.

Members of the Independent Permit Committee have made long and significant contributions to the VAFA (whether at Board level or as Big V Champions and Big V Legends) and having an Independent Permit Committee in place who care so much about upholding and preserving the Amateur Status of our competition to ensure the Association are attracting the right type of players is a key asset for us.

Match day permits remain open post June 30 providing the VAFA has entered into an Interchange Agreement with the other League. The VAFA has entered into Interchange Agreements with the following leagues allowing players to participate in matches between each league under a Permit in accordance with certain conditions - YJFL, SMJFL, SFNL, NFNL, Victorian Metropolitan Superules and all AFL Victoria Country Leagues (for full-time students only who wish to return home during holidays and play with the club with which the player was last registered before being transferred to their current VAFA club).

A player’s permit to play may also be cancelled during the season. In line with protecting the Amateur Status of our Association, Rule 46 of the VAFA Rules states that a permit of a player shall be cancelled in the event that a player who already holds a permit to play in the competition plays a premiership match during the season in a team representing another club that is not a member of the Association (excluding VFL and VFLW players and excluding what is permissible pursuant to applicable Interchange Agreements).

The VAFA is constantly searching for ways to better processes and communication methods within the player permit area and as always we welcome all feedback and suggestions. A reminder that the VAFA will transition to PlayHQ next season as our Competition Management Platform.

Strengthening our ability to protect the Amateur Status of our competition is a key activity

Every year, no matter what level of football, the Premiership coach wheels out a handful of lines in the post mortem that have become part of the fluent language of Australian rules football.

One of those lines that has always stuck with me is how often the coach pays tribute to the 22 players on the day, but is quick to reference it takes good form leading in, good luck with injuries, and the whole squad of players to get through the season to reach the promised land.

After 13 weeks of the home and away season, more players than ever before in the last decade of William Buck Premier have been called upon to play in the seniors. Sides decimated with injuries and off-season retirements (think Old Melburnians), others with pre-season transfers out (consider Caulfield Grammarians), and the well-worn European travel (someone needs to ground all planes out of Old Brighton).

Heading into the final five weeks of the season, clubs will continue to flip magnets, call on under 19’s, have conversations to regain players from VFL sides in the run to finals, and the race to avoid relegation.

Perhaps a contradiction from the coaches to the squad mentality is the need for stability in the side. A stable team without regular changes each week is a significant help for the coaching staff and the messaging to the troops.

Collegians and University Blacks head into their ding-dong battle at the Harry Trott Oval with the least number of players used through the first 13 rounds.

15 of the 35 players used by Dale Bower have played 12 or 13 games this year. For a side that’s come up from Premier B, the consistency is paying dividends in the last month.

Four wins in a row with an average winning margin of 29 points. There’s belief in Blacks, an internal knowing that they belong in the VAFA’s top-flight.

Josh Steadman has almost locked himself into the spot as the competitions number #1 ruckman, his co-captain Campbell Moorfield is the competitions #1 intercept defender, with Lachie Knight as a top #5 midfielder.

Collegians will prove to be the biggest test of the season to date. Jared Rivers men are far and away the competitions #1 seed. 36 players have been called upon.

The depth of the Lions is there, particularly in the forward half; Dave Mirra will miss, Alex Lukic is ready.

Will Mayhood has been the find of the season, his versatility will prove to be the area the Lions can expose Blacks around the ground. Moorfields work for Blacks is mirrored by Sofrinidis work for Collegians. Knight will send it forward one-way, King Kenny likewise the other.

If Blacks bring their absolute best, this is set up to be a special homecoming for Handsome Dipper, Josh Heriot to get back behind

the microphone on RSN Xtra from 1pm in the VAFA’s Match of the Day.

Pre-COVID you never would have dreamed up a situation like this. The red and black mafia, Old Xaverians against their biggest rivals Old Scotch playing at the home base of St Kevin’s, TH King Oval this weekend.

Have these sides mellowed under the regime of three Presidents who are akin to Phil, Alan and Stu from The Hangover? The three best friends that anyone could have.

While it’s all fun and games off the field, and it’s been a positive move to have sides come to the aid of the Old Xaverians while they spend 2023 as nomads. On the field, the Cardinals can’t take this match laying down or in a friendly manner.

Mark Gnatt has had seven of his troops play every game this year. Old Xav’s have had two. A staggering 49 players have been asked to pull on the red and black jumper this year.

Consistency has not been key and for the second time this year they’re staring down the barrel of a third straight loss.

We’ve seen the best and worst of Old Scotch in the past month. If they want to remain a genuine top two contender, they have to bring their best. It’s been far too long for anyone to remember the last time the Cardinals beat Xav’s twice in a calendar year. That could change on Saturday, and we can put down the history books.

In 2022, Old Brighton played off in the Grand Final with 46 players used for the year. With five games left; 48 have been called upon. Tom Fisher is the only player to have played all 13 games.

It’s been a head scratching season for Dan Donati.

Down the road at Old Melburnians, Paul Satterley has another unwanted record he can timidly raise the bat for. Round 13 saw them bring up player #50 for the 2023 season. They’re on track to go past the 52 players they used in 2018.

Off-season retirements to key players, contact injuries have forced long lay offs.

Much like the thought bubble around Xav’s and Scotch playing at St Kevin’s. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that would have said that after last year’s Round 18 “elimination final” between these sides at Brighton Beach Oval. The game this weekend could almost seal the fate of Old Melburnians in 2023 and resign them to a spot in Premier B in 2024.

Likewise, an OM’s victory over the Tonners would dispel any pulse the red and blue have of going on another fairytale run to September.

Ben Harding has been an elite recruit, he and Lachie Haysman the only two at OM’s who’ve played every game this year. It’s been a long time between drinks for OM’s at Brighton Beach Oval, the last six down at the bay have fallen the way of the homeside by an average of 39 points.

2023, the year the squad mentality is needed more than ever

First quarters have been the focus of this column in recent weeks (0/13 is the count for those playing at home), a strong start and coming in at the first change with a lead would go a long way to OM’s causing an upset.

Caulfield Grammarians are at the point of the season that they know where they’re going in 2024. With an eye to the future the opportunities on the field are being given to strong performing under 19 players. Short term pain for long-term gain under Bluey McKenna. 48 players have been asked to stand up, including reserves coach Jonno Nash who finished the game last week as the ruckman with an injury to Sam Haffenden.

St Kevin’s have had to mix and match at different times throughout the year. The first of the three premierships saw them use 43 players, they’re likely to go past that number before September, currently at 42. The last six weeks have been a St Kevin’s we aren’t accustomed to. A 3-3 record and one score over 75 points. The run to the finals is favourable to the reigning premiers. Getting there is all that matters, and then the real stuff starts.

2011 was the last time Caulfield tasted success against St Kevin’s. Expect that drought to continue into 2024 and beyond.

Old Haileybury has turned a corner. Three wins from their last four matches. The gap between their best and their not so good has closed. University Blues have proven the thumping against Collegians was a blip on the radar.

35 players leaned on, equal first with their counterparts University Blacks. The gap however between the best of Blues, and the worst of Blues is a gulf they’ll need to close before September.

Guy Martyn has been missing key players throughout parts of the year. Dane Crognale, Sam Grimley, Eddie Ziebarth, Jack Stephens, Charlie Furphy. He’s got a majority of them back in business now.

James Magner and Sam Gilbert have added AFL experience to the modus operandi of the Bloods. Brede Seccull, Brodie Steele and Josh Gaspirini are midfield accumulators.

Can they counter Tom Cutler, Matt Crocker and Meyrick Buchanan though?

Ayce Cordy v Lachie Treverton in the ruck, the #1 and #2 for hitouts will be brilliant to watch.

The squad mentality will be critical to all sides in the final five weeks of the season. Top four spots are on the line, climbing out of the bottom two is still relevant.

It’s been a year like no other with the amount of players that have been used to date, for reference 414 were used in 2022, 416 in 2019, and 448 in 2018.

420 have played already in 2023 with five weeks to go. We’re on track to go beyond 450 by the time we reach the finals.

Round 13 sees one team send a big message to the rest of the competition.

It was back to work in the Premier Women’s competition this weekend, with all teams refreshed after a week off due to the bye and Big V representative game. The Big V Women’s side triumphed over Perth with a 63-point victory, with Bree Doyle starring as captain and Molly Simpson finishing the game with a three-goal bag.

Old Scotch has sent a big message to the rest of the competition, defeating Kew by 36 points. The victory marks Kew’s first loss for the season, and they now find themselves equal first with SKOB on 10 wins apiece.

Kew were limited to just one goal for the game via Grace Osborne, whilst the Cardinals piled on four goals in the first half. However, their second half was marred by inaccuracy, scoring 1.8 for the rest of the game. This would be something they’d look to correct before we hit finals as it could cost them a spot in the grand final depending on the opposition.

Sophie Angie was best on ground for the Cardinals, whilst Caitlin Thorne and Billie Holloway both featured after each scoring a goal. Kew has not yet uploaded their best players for the game.

Next week, Old Scotch will host Caulfield in a big game at Camberwell, whilst Kew will travel to Brunswick St to play Fitzroy.

On a weekend of big victories of course reigning premiers St Kevin’s were involved in the action, with a 44-point victory over Coburg. Coburg were limited to a singular behind for the entirety of the game in what was their toughest game for the season.

For St Kevin’s it was the usual suspects getting involved once again, with Sarah Cameron kicking three goals to be best on ground for the first time this season. Sarah Betts and Bree Doyle featured in the best once again, whilst Margaret Gleeson also earnt a place after kicking two goals.

On a tough day for the Lions, Dacia Abela and Tayla Dinuccio led from the front.

St Kevin’s host Collegians next weekend who will be fresh from a two week break and raring to go, whilst Coburg will go to McAlister Oval to play West Brunswick.

Caulfield Grammarians victory over West Brunswick on Saturday sees them sit one game outside of the top four and with a game against Old Scotch next weekend, they could find themselves inside there depending on the way other results swing.

Their 31-point win was a high scoring affair, finishing the game with 8.11. Whilst it was an inaccurate first quarter for Grammarians, with 2.7, they rectified this after quarter time, going on to kick 6.4 for the remainder of the game.

Serena Kuo was evidently best on ground, kicking three goals in the game. Tarryn Hurst and Chloe O’Malley also continued their strong form in front of goal, with two goals each. O’Malley is now sitting second on the goalkicker leader board with 16 goals for the season, only four behind St Kevin’s Catherine Stanton.

West Brunswick did not upload their goalkickers or best players at the time of writing.

Next weekend, Caulfield face the Cardinals whilst West Brunswick has a more evenly matched opponent in Coburg.

Fitzroy recorded the biggest victory of the weekend, with a 46-point win over Melbourne Uni Women’s. It was a big turnaround from the last time these two teams played back in Round 5, when Melbourne Uni won by 20 points.

It was a day of celebration, with the win being Fitzroy’s second for the season and first since Round 4.

Melbourne Uni was goalless for the entire game, kicking two behinds in the second quarter and only one after that. On a tough day, Tahlia Meier was their best. Georgina Bennett and Robyn Randell both had two goals for Fitzroy in what was an accurate game, kicking 8.1 for the day. Sarah Lynas was their best for a second time this season. Next week, Melbourne Uni will be able to reset with the bye, whilst Fitzroy face a tough opponent in Kew.

The CY’s and the Tigers blow the top four wide open

With five weeks remaining in the home and away season for Premier B Men’s the fight for the lower rungs of the top four is heating up.

St Bede’s Mentone/Tigers have drawn level with rivals De La Salle, and Beaumaris after a 16 point victory over Old Trinity on Saturday.

In the clubs annual Jane’s Match, the Tigers got off to a slow start before working their way into the game during the second term, and then remaining ahead of the T’s for the rest of the afternoon.

Jack Behnk (4 goals) and Ben Murphy (3 goals) led the way on the scoresheet for the home side. While Chris Mangoni and Zach Calvez were named amongst the best players on the ground.

Harry Thompson was a noticeable absence for Old Trinity after his Big V performance seven days earlier. Hugh Beasley, a significant in for his first run with the T’s this year was able to get minutes on the ground, run in his legs and a goal of the day contender.

Trinity have now lost their last two games, and three games behind the top four with five weeks remaining. The Tigers face off against St Bernard’s this weekend, before games against Monash, Fitzroy, De La Salle and Williamstown to finish. The fortunes of their own season lay within the next month of football.

The top four has opened up because of the strong showing from Williamstown CYMS put in against De La Salle

A 31-point win in the clubs Homecoming Round, paying tribute to the CY’s of the 1960’s and 1970’s was on the back of a bag of five goals from Will Smyth. He’s taken his season tally to 25 goals.

After leading at quarter time, De La trailed at half-time. They wrestled back momentum during the third term but were unable to capitalise in front of goal. Nathan Scollo tried his very best kicking three goals and being named the best on the ground for the travellers.

The loss leaves their spot in the four somewhat vulnerable. The run to September has them competing against sides all around them. It’s going to be a great test of character for Nick Hyland’s troops.

Fitzroy were severely challenged by Ajax having to scrap out at seven point victory to all but lock up a top two spot. Each time the Roys were ready to burst away, the Jackers had the answers opening up a 10 point lead at half-time.

The third term is where Fitzroy were able to gain ascendancy on the scoreboard and weren’t headed from then on. Both sides traded goals in the final term, Fitzroy able to maintain the lead and run down the clock.

Jonah Micmacher kicked a goal and was named the best player for Ajax. Bradley Caplan kicked two majors for the day.

Aidan Lambert followed up his three goal performance a fortnight ago with another two for Fitzroy. Rhys Seakins has capped off a strong month of footy with a best on ground display.

The Roys head out to Banskia Reserve this weekend. The run to September pins them against Beaumaris (Currently 3rd), St Bernard’s (1st), SBMT (5th), Williamstown and De La Salle (4th). Luke Mahoney will know where his team stands when they enter this year’s finals campaign after that.

Ajax will do battle against Monash Blues, a game they will fancy their chances in off the back of their performance on Saturday.

For the second time this year St Bernard’s put Old Geelong to the sword. The final margin of 62 points could have been far greater had it not been for poor shooting in front of goal.

1.8.14 at quarter time, a final score of 15.20.110. The Snowdogs had countless opportunities in front of goal.

Marcus Holland produced his best game in front of goal this year with five. Dominic Sullivan found his way to four majors. And, Ben Overman got back to his best.

After back to back wins, the OG’s came back to earth with a thud. Will Stephenson however maintained his strong form in front of goal with another four. Stephenson has now kicked 11 goals from his past four matches and becoming a focal point in the front half.

Old Geelong are not out of finals contention. It’s a favourable run home, three of the five matches against sides below them on the ladder. They reached the 2022 Premier C Grand Final as underdogs, they know this storyline well.

The Snowdogs continue their winning form at home, eight wins from eight starts. They’re on the road for the next month and won’t return to the College until Round 18. On the field, Beaumaris put a fortnight of frustration behind them with a resounding 101 point win over Monash

For the second game in a row, and third time this year Joseph Nowell booted five goals. He’s kicked 10 of his 19 for the season against Monash.

Potential AFL draft prospect Calsher Dear pulled on the Sharks guernsey and slotted three majors as part of the victory.

James Flett kicked two goals for Monash, Nicholas Argento was named the best for the Blues. They’re off to Gary Smorgon Oval this weekend to face Ajax.

The Sharks remain inside the top four with an investigation pending as they said in a statement on Friday night they would be challenging the VAFA’s ruling.

In Round 14 they welcome Fitzroy to Banksia Reserve. A must-win contest if they’re to remain in the four and mix it with the best in Premier B.

Winning streaks continue, as finals draw closer for Premier B Women’s

As we etch nearer to finals, the competition intensifies for Premier B Women’s with Monash Blues at the top of the ladder.

Aquinas OC’s outing to the home of the St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers, resulted in a nail-biting game, with only four points between the final scores.

Leading Aquinas to victory was Melanie Hogg, scoring a total of two goals alongside Niamh Sanders who also contributed 6 points to the final score. It was Hannah Virgona who was deemed best on field with her astounding defensive efforts.

Alannah Strode was a goal-kicking machine for the Tigers, claiming two goals for her team and Olivia Steinfort was recognised as their best player for round 13.

In round 14, both teams will partake in an away game with the Tigers coming head-to-head against Brunswick and Aquinas taking on Mazenod OC.

Monash Blues’ shining star Molly McFalane had a triumphant outing to the home of North Brunswick over the weekend, scoring a total of three goals for her team.

Also contributing to the 74-point difference between the final scores was Emma Draftin scoring two goals for the Blues, as well as best-afield Johannah Dallas.

North Brunswick were unfortunately unable to withhold the power of Blues, scoring a total of two behinds. Annie Littles’ defensive efforts were recognised, earning herself best-on-field for her team.

Next week, Monash will play a home match against Richmond Central and North Brunswick will head to the home of the Old Yarra Cobras.

In an unfortunate home match for Richmond Central, it was Mazenod OC who reigned supreme, with a 20-point margin between the final scores. Mazenod dominated the play and were able to keep Richmond Central to a mere 3 behinds.

Can Richmond central withhold the power of the mighty Monash Blues in next week›s match? Can Mazenods, goal scorers Olivia Davis, Lara Del Conte and best-on-field Stephanie Smith continue their triumph in next week›s match against Aquinas OC?

The Old Yarra Cobras played an outstanding match against Brunswick over the weekend. The Cobras stormed home with a 78-point victory, in a percentage boosting win.

Grace Kendall and Nolene Kingi, worked hard alongside Brunswick’s best player Lauren Palombi to shorten the margin between the final scores but unfortunately the Cobras strength could not be detained.

With a total of 13 goals and 12 behinds, Tahlia Limburg scored an incredible four goals, with Illiana Zarfiriou scoring three, Alannah Murray with two and Lou Podmore, Emma Elliott and Mia Giannopoulos contributing one goal each. Jess Major displayed a magnificent best-on-field performance.

Vultures Soar in a Nail-Biting Thriller; PEGS Unleash a 7-Goal Quarter

Round 13 of the Premier C Men’s competition was an exciting one as the ladder continues to shuffle with only 5 rounds of footy left.

In a thrilling encounter at Carey Sports Complex, Old Carey and Parkdale Vultures battled it out in a highstakes 8-point match that held significant implications for the ladder. As the clock wound down and Old Carey trailed by 2 goals, Connor Ogilvie stepped up, with a massive run-down tackle that earned him a crucial set shot opportunity from about 50 meters out. Despite the pressure and having to rush his routine Ogilvie managed to send the ball soaring through the big sticks, bringing Old Carey to within a goal.

With around forty-five seconds left for Old Carey to score a major, the ball ping-ponged from one end to the other with the siren sounding to the Vultures relief as they held on by 4 points to keep their finals hopes alive. This must-win match pushed them within half a game of the top 4, largely thanks to Max Phillips, who delivered an outstanding performance, slotting 4 goals for the Vultures.

On the other hand, Old Carey now finds themselves three games adrift of the top 4, making it an uphill battle for them to secure a finals spot by the end of the season.

In another intriguing match, Mazenod seemed to be on course for a victory over PEGS with a 22-point lead going into the second half. However, PEGS displayed their class and determination, staging an incredible comeback in the third quarter, scoring 7 unanswered goals. This impressive surge secured them a ten-point victory as they continue their hunt to reclaim top spot on the ladder.

PEGS’ Jack Fenner played a significant role, contributing 5 goals to their triumph, while Mitchel D’Angelo chipped in with 3 goals for Mazenod. As they now only sit a half game clear in the top 4, Mazenod will need to bank some wins to solidify a potential finals position.

In a dominating display, Old Ivanhoe kept Marcellin goalless in the first half and secured a massive 98-point win, significantly bolstering their percentage. William Murphy, Luke Scuderi, Patrick Naish, and Harrison Frazer were instrumental, combining for an impressive 15 of Ivanhoe’s 20 goals. As a result, Old Ivanhoe now enjoys being two games clear in the top 4 with a significant percentage advantage.

Meanwhile, Old Camberwell tightened their grip on the top spot with a 6-goal victory over second-bottom Ormond. Although they found themselves trailing at halftime, they fought back fiercely, producing an impressive 8 goal third quarter to seal the deal. Liam Thomas had a standout performance, slotting 6 goals for Camberwell, while Harry Laukens followed suit with 5 goals of his own.

In 2023, 165 lives have already been lost on Victorian Roads, which is a 28% increase on the same time in 2022. Thank you to all clubs who wore the TAC blue armbands, shared messages around Road Safety with their communities, to show support of the TAC Road Safety message.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

Kera Galaminda Gellar (Hampton Rovers)

The VAFA congratulates Kera Galaminda Gellar from Hampton Rovers Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 13 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Kera was named in the best last week and kicked a goal this week and is making a huge impact at just 17 years old!

What the club said:

Although Kera plays on stronger and more experienced players, she definitely isn’t shy and likes to make an impact in games.

Kera›s agility is remarkable for a 17-year-old forward, and many Rover›s goals result from her involvement. Her aerial contest work is outstanding, not to mention her IQ and awareness, as well as her ground level game being equally impressive.

She is extremely coachable and always eager for feedback and willing to learn to help improve her game to reach her potential goals. It is a pleasure to have Kera in our Rovers side and we can›t wait to see what she can do over the coming years.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Hugo Nosiara (Old Haileybury)

The VAFA congratulates Hugo Nosiara from Old Haileybury Amateur Football Club, who has received the Men’s Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 13. Hugo has just played his 8th game in the seniors in his debut year and gave an enormous effort in the backline against Caulfield to help his side win the game!

What the club said:

Hugo has been a pleasant surprise to us at Old Haileybury with his ability to find his feet so quickly at Senior level. After playing at the school last year, he started as a half forward in our Practice Matches. He then hurt his ankle and missed some significant time before coming into our team.

He has turned himself into a damaging half back who uses the ball beautifully off his left foot. Couple this with a great attitude and I believe he has a bright future with our club.

Hugo is currently on Carlton’s VFL list awaiting an opportunity to pull on the jumper and when it comes, he will be ready.

The Lions conquer the mountain, beating Glen Eira

The 2023 VAFA Season is shaping up to be a nail-biter in Division 1 Men’s. With only 5 rounds left to play, and the middle of the table all sitting on the same points, there is a huge question mark as to how the season will pan out.

Therry Penola’s clash against top of the table, Glen Eira, was arguably the best game we’ve seen this season. Therry Penola Lions have been able to secure possibly the best outcome snatching the game from the Gryphons.

The Lions burst out of the blocks to secure the early momentum and put the pressure on the Gryphons. Five goals to one in the first term really set the tone, Matthew Lyons once again instrumental for the Lion’s fast start. Connor Kilbane had his goal kicking boots on this week slotting four crucial majors to keep the arms-length from Glen Eira. Jackson Young and Mitch Trimble were also major contributors.

On the other hand, it didn’t go all to plan for the ladder leaders Glen Eira. Tim Johnston and Alex Erwin-Ross did their best to keep them in the hunt to chase the Lions like a frantic Collingwood comeback that would secure one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory.

They sure did come close, but it was a win for the ages for the gallant Therry Penola as they keep their season still on track with results pending.

A middle of the table clash between Prahran and Kew, had both sides hungry to secure a top 4 spot with finals looming on the horizon. It seemed to be a pretty level affair until halftime. Bears skipper Max Waters was integral down in the back line as he was taking crucial incept marks to keep the Two Blues at bay.

After half time the Bears hard work was slowly showing through as Prahran put on the afterburners in the third term launching away with a counterattack of seven goals to one.

Jonathan Simonetta the catalyst kicked four majors for the day. Eduardo Espinosa was another key figure that popped up and kicked two to see Prahran home by forty points. Prahran now well on track for yet another finals berth come September.

Ivanhoe vs Preston

Ivanhoe Park produced another classic as the Preston Bullants burst out of the blocks early with a four goal to Ivanhoe’s one behind first term. The Bullants showed class and poise through Liam Mcleod being lethal in front of the big sticks as they kicked ahead.

The Magpies were needing to reset coming into the second term and they did not disappoint, carving out seven goals in the second term to put the pressure back on the Bullants. This significant lead change in a single quarter put them ten points ahead at the main break.

Nick Vines booted four goals and was finely aided by Wayne Schultz who was best on ground with three goals and a stack of possessions. Bullants tried their best to stay in the game but ultimately fell short in the end going down by three goals.

UHS-VU was away at Harry McDonald oval to take on Old Peninsula. The game started positively for the Vultures, kicking five opening quarter goals that set the tone. Will Barnett for UHS looked the goods as he kicked four majors and being aided by James McGee who booted three classy ones as well.

The Pirates fought back kicking the next four majors of the game to take a handy six-point lead into the long break, a game that was sensing a climactic ending. But a third quarter lapse from the Pirates possibly cost them the game. A six-goal quarter to the Vultures had the Pirates playing catch up, needing a miracle win it from here. But it wasn’t to be as the Vultures came home in a thriller.

Oakleigh headed into their clash against West Brunswick at home as clear favourites. West Brunswick showed up at W.A Scammell Reserve in every sense of the word and delivered an unexpected performance that had them leading at every turn.

Emlyn Nettleton was superb for the Magpies and best on, racking up possessions everywhere he went. The Krushers were never out of the game with ageless Aaron Cloke proving that he still has it; the experienced full-forward piling on six majors.

The Krushers came into the fourth term revved up and showed exactly why they are sitting at second on the ladder, stealing the game from right under West Brunswick’s noses. It was their composure that got them over the line with a 25-point win.

Old Brighton have reclaimed second place on the ladder with an authoritative 82-point win over Hawthorn AFC.

It could have been a lot worse for the Hawks if Old Brighton had been more accurate in front of goals, with the Tonners ending the day on 11 goals and a massive 23 behinds. Despite the persistent efforts of Alexandra Crough and Mia Mathias, Hawthorn managed just one goal for the day, coming from the boot of Emogen Johnson.

For Old Brighton, Cat O’Brien and India Tait lead from the front, finishing with a goal apiece, while Daisy Flockart provided a strong target up forward and ended the day with three majors.

Old Geelong hosted Marcellin OC for the match of the round, with both sides fighting for a spot in the top 4 with finals on the horizon.

The game lived up to the hype, with both sides bringing an exciting brand of football to Como Park. The Sherrin was shared around in the first half, but it was Old Geelong who led by four points at the main break, thanks to their superior finish in front of goals.

Marcellin came out firing in the third term, however only managed three behinds for all their efforts, making it a 1-point ball game at three-quarter time. In the final quarter, Marcellin stood tall and finally got reward on the scoreboard, kicking two unanswered goals to snatch the win by 11 points.

Amy Halaby was best on for Old Geelong for the second game in a row, while Charlotte McGilp continued her hot streak of form for Marcellin. Zoe Glascott was the most influential player in front of goals, kicking three for the day to put herself in equal-third place on the division’s goal kicking tally.

Beaumaris proved too strong once again, taking down Old Melburnians by 34 points at Banksia Reserve.

The first quarter was evenly contested with both sides

registering two goals. But after the first break, Beaumaris took control, adding another two goals per quarter while the Omelettes only managed one more goal for the rest of the game.

Alana Hilford played a pivotal role in the Shark’s execution, kicking three goals and being named as Beaumaris’ best. Stephanie Barnett put up a brave fight for the Omelettes and was recognised as their best player.

Hampton Rovers and Old Xaverians have swapped positions on the ladder, after Old Xaverians blew the Rovers away at Castlefield Reserve.

Hampton Rovers got on top early, managing two unanswered goals in the first. After the first break, however, Old Xaverians’ defenders switched on and did not allow Hampton Rovers to hit the scoreboard again. Old Xaverians chipped away in the second, until they managed to take a slim lead into the half-time break.

Old Xaverians were dominant across the second half, piling on five more goals, with the final margin a gamehigh of 41 points. This was another defeat that could have been a lot more brutal if not for wayward goal-kicking, with Old Xaverians logging 6.18 for the day.

Poppy Ward featured in the best for Hampton Rovers for the fifth consecutive match, while Sophia Rothfield was best on ground for Old Xaverians for the third time this season.

The final match of the round was a close one, with Old Haileybury beating Old Camberwell Grammarians by a narrow 7 points.

The game was evenly matched, and Camberwell were not short of opportunities, ending the day with more scoring shots than the victors. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal was their downfall.

Serene Vudiniabola continued in her goal kicking ways, contributing three goals to Old Haileybury’s final score, while Elizabeth Simpkin received the coaches’ best on plaudits. For Old Camberwell, Alexandra Herrington was impressive as ever, listed as the best for her side for the fifth time this season.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

With only three rounds remaining of the home-and-away season and six teams still in finals contention, the matchups in Round 14 are starting to feel that extra bit significant.

Old Xaverians will host second-placed Old Brighton, with the result important for both sides’ seasons. Old Brighton will be desperate to maintain their spot in the top two, while Old Xaverians will want to win to enhance their chances of avoiding relegation.

Old Geelong and Old Melburnians will face each other in an exciting third vs fourth tussle, with both teams looking to get back on the winners list and secure their place in finals.

Hawthorn AFC are hunting their second Division 1 win and will be hopeful they can find it next week, when they host Hampton Rovers. On the flip side, the Rovers need this win to get themselves out of the bottom two.

Marcellin OC will travel to Gordon Barnard Reserve, to take on Old Camberwell Grammarians, with a win likely to launch them into the top four.

Finally, Beaumaris will host Old Haileybury at Banksia Reserve. While Beaumaris would be strong favourites going into this game, Old Haileybury have proven themselves capable of causing an upset, and with top spot on the ladder locked in for Beaumaris, is there a chance the Sharks have become complacent?

StMary’s produce a win for the ages

2023 has seen St Mary’s come down from Division 1 in 2022, and lean pickings throughout this year. However, the gallant efforts across the first 12 weeks of the year paid dividends in Round 13 with a hard-fought two point win over MHSOB.

Heading out to Woodfull-Miller Oval, St Mary’s were buoyed by a strong showing in the opening term to hold a 13 point lead. The Unicorns didn’t take full advantage of their chances in the second quarter kicking 2.7 and trailed the travellers by seven points at the main change.

At three quarter time with the scores level there was one final 30 minute fight left in St Mary’s who won the quarter and the game by two points. Their first victory since Round 3.

Eight different goalkickers on the scoresheet, Michael Flora named the best player on the ground. St Mary’s will fancy their chances of winning a second game in a row when they head home to Ferndale Park to face off against bottom placed Aquinas this weekend.

The Unicorns will be ruing missed opportunities in front of goal, Julian Eimutis led the way on the field through the midfield, along with Angus Lane. A second straight loss has caused a significant dent in their finals hopes for 2023. This weekend South Melbourne Districts await. A side they beat earlier this year.

South Melbourne will enter that contest against MHSOB on the back of a 42 point loss to Whitefriars.

A more than competitive, and equal first half saw the Bloods fade out in the second half being held to one goal while the Friars pulled away with eight of their own.

Samuel Kieseker was the focal point of the forward line for the side that has now levelled their wins and losses to equal with South Melbourne. Nicholas Garrot one of the main reasons the Friars were able to get on top in the second half.

Jamie Brooker played a lone hand for South Melbourne in the forward line kicking six majors, and was threatening

to tear the game to shreds early on, before being curtailed after halftime.

Whitefriars head home to the College to face off against the Old Paradians this weekend with every game vital in the final five if they’re to make the final four.

Old Paradians’ Michael Boundy had a day out against Aquinas in Round 13. Bringing up a bag of 10 to assist in the club’s 53 point victory.

Most importantly, in the context of the season if gives the blue, green and purple monster a handy percentage boost and an extended game clear of the bottom two relegation spots.

The game itself started off in favour of Aquinas who were dead eye dicks in the opening term with six straight goals. Held to just three from there, the boys of Parade were able to march to the beat of their own drum kicking 13 after quarter time.

David Huntley and James King were pivotal in providing Boundy with a bounty of shots at goal.

For the third week in a row Tobias Box was named the best player for Aquinas, supported by Josh Robertson who also hit the scoreboard with two goals.

Parkside remain a game clear on top of the Division 2 Men’s ladder after running over the top of the Old Yarra Cobras

The Cobras led at every change of the match but were overpowered by the ladder leaders in the final quarter with a seven goal onslaught to record a 25 point victory.

These two sides may well meet again in September, and no doubt the Cobras will take plenty away from this contest against the team that’s been the benchmark in 2023.

Michael Romano kicked three for the victors, as did Ben Radford who has taken his season tally to 54 goals for the year.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 28 DIVISION 2 MEN’S
Christopher
Access Team Lists on GameDay via

Kyle Margaritis kicked three for the Cobras with Luke Stacker kicking two and marked down as the best for them. The loss brings to end a terrific run of six straight victories.

They’ll be keen to get back on the winners list this weekend when they face Brunswick in a must win clash to keep the chance of a top two finish alive.

Following the theme for much of Division 2 over the weekend, Brunswick had to wait until after half time to pull away from Bulleen-Templestowe.

The Ants were within seven points at the main change before the home side exploded with an eight goal third term to put the game beyond doubt.

Thomas Wilson slammed home four goals, he’s kicked goals in every game except one this year and has been exceptional for Brunswick. Jonathon Haddad also kicked three in a best on ground display.

Jack Anderson has had a strong month for the Ants and named the best for them. The challenges don’t get any easier this weekend, tackling the ladder leaders.

With a two game gap to the relegation zone, this discussion will heat up further in the coming weeks when they face off against St Mary’s and Aquinas in back to back weeks.

Brunswick find themselves in a mini-final this weekend, a win against the Cobras almost locks away the double chance. A loss bridges the gap between the two sides and leaves the door slightly open for the slide.

CY’s remain undefeated following clash of the ladder leaders

Round 13 of Division 2 Women’s brought another week of exciting action including a top of the table clash at Williamstown, as all winning teams won in convincing fashion.

Melbourne Cricket Club FC hosted Old Trinity at Beaumaris, but it was the visitors who got off to a flyer, kicking 2.4 while holding MCC scoreless in the first term. Despite the home team kicking their first major in the second, Old Trinity showed their skill in the third term booting three majors to setup a game-winning margin. In the end, it was a 33 point win to Trinity as they remain entrenched inside the top four.

G. English and S. Bull were instrumental for Old Trinity, both contributing two goals to their team’s total, as L. Caruana added one more to the tally. S. Bull, A. Malamas and G. English were best afield. For MCC, A. Harris kicked their sole goal, while C. Wade, L. Suckling and K. Runciman were their best players.

At John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve, Ivanhoe showcased their strength in a dominant performance against bottom-placed Therry Penola. With a wellcoordinated attack and solid defence, Ivanhoe secured an impressive 51-point victory. It was a hard-fought first half, with just the one goal kicked, as Ivanhoe took an eight-point lead into the main break. The difference was the third term, when Ivanhoe kicked eight majors to blow the game apart. To Therry’s credit, they kicked four second half goals to reduce the margin somewhat.

E. Johnson starred for Ivanhoe, kicking three goals, while G. Pirdis and C. Rouch contributed two goals each. G. Pirdis, R. Campbell, T. Vandergriff were best afield. For Therry Penola, M. Ryan and M. Ratcliffe kicked their goals, as N. Kemp, R. Gazzo and M. Ryan were best.

Parkdale Vultures delivered a dominant display, overpowering St Mary’s Salesian in a 56-point victory at Gerry Green Reserve. After a goalless first quarter, the Vultures kicked three goals to one in the second term and increased their lead for throughout the second half, allowing the opposition to add just one additional point.

S. Symons led the charge for Parkdale Vultures, kicking an impressive four goals, while B. Carson and M. Capsalis contributed two goals each. St Mary’s Salesian struggled to find their rhythm up front, managing only one goal for the match through G. Cropley. Best for Parkdale were N. Russo, C. Phillips and B. Carson, while N. Martyszus, L. Stubbings and C. Coloe contributed well for St Mary’s.

It was a top of the table clash at Fearon Reserve on their ‘Homecoming Day’, as Williamstown CYMS delivered a strong performance against Albert Park, securing a 34-point victory to remain undefeated in the division. As was the case in many games, it was a slow start with no goals for either side and by half time, the Falcons had the only major on the board, while the CY’s had trouble in front of goal, kicking nine behinds.

Four goals in the third term allowed Willy to increase their lead to 28 points at the final change, and two goals to one in the fourth seal the victory. It could have been a much larger margin if not for Williamstown’s inaccuracy, kicking 6.13 for the day.

S. Georgas played a starring role for Williamstown CYMS, contributing three crucial goals to their final score, with singles to P. Mackenzie, C. Tyrrell and L. Winter. Best afield for the CY’s were Z. Day, S. Thomas and S. Georgas.

Albert Park fought valiantly throughout the match, but their efforts were not enough to match the top side. H. Lawrence and H. Buur scored their team’s goals, while I. Beerens, J. Griffin and H. Lawrence were best for their team.

Crushing victory puts one side into finals contention

In a thrilling display of footy prowess, Canterbury, Elsternwick, Hawthorn, and Power House each secured resounding victories during Division 3 football’s actionpacked Round 13.

Canterbury came out swinging and delivered a knockout performance against Richmond Central. It was neck-and-neck in the first half with scores level at the main change, but Canterbury turned up the heat in the third quarter, leaving their opponents in the dust. Eight goals to two after half-time signalled their intent.

Tom Lowden’s return to the side was nothing short of spectacular, bagging four goals and leading the Cobras to a solid 50-point win.

Jack Bilson put up a brave fight for Richmond, scoring four goals of his own, but in the end, Canterbury’s unyielding spirit earned them a well-deserved spot in the top four.

Elsternwick left no room for doubt with a dominating display against Wattle Park. It was a one-sided affair as Elsternwick unleashed their firepower, trouncing Wattle Park with a massive 125-point margin. Seven goals in the opening term set up the day, a 10-goal final quarter underlined the clinical nature of the victory.

Spencer Hankin was the star of the show, dazzling the crowd with a stunning eight-goal performance. The win was not just big; it was historic. Elsternwick now sits proudly at the top of the ladder, proving they mean business this season.

Hawthorn were able to kick their second highest score of the season against La Trobe University over the weekend. For the third time in their last four matches the Hawks have kicked over 100 points in a game. Hawthorn showed their championship pedigree, pulling away from La Trobe and producing a commanding 93-point victory.

Justin Raiti and William Meehan put on a goal-scoring clinic, racking up an impressive tally for the Hawks. Kudos to La Trobe’s Matthew Ogle, who fought tooth and nail, bagging five goals for his team. The win firmly secures Hawthorn’s spot in third place on the ladder. Power House flexed their muscles bulldozing Swinburne University with a whopping 96-point triumph. This win was crucial for Power House’s finals ambitions, and they left no room for doubt about their intentions. The House remains a game behind Wattle Park in fourth spot with five weeks to go.

Michael Timmons led the charge, bagging six goals and inspiring his team to a dominant performance. Swinburne University had their moments, but it wasn’t enough to stop the powerhouse that is Power House. For the second game in a row Sean Scotland put in a best on ground display. Perhaps the fate of the 2023 season lays in their Round 15 match up against the Animals, but they won’t want to be resting on their laurels.

Upsets and dominance, the themes of the round

The first match of the round saw Masala take on Albert Park in an important game for both teams’ seasons with a win for Masala keeping them ahead of the chasing pack whilst a win for the Falcons would take them into the top 4. The first quarter saw Albert Park do what Albert Park does best as they got off to a terrific start against the Tigers. The Falcons were able to kick away early with a 6-goal first quarter to take a 23-point lead into quarter time. The second quarter saw Falcons further extend their lead as Masala’s inaccuracy cost them closing the distance as Albert Park held a 32-point lead with a half of football to play.

The third quarter saw the Tigers begin to find their way with a 3-goal quarter, however, the Falcons were able to kick 4 of their own to further extend their lead to 40 points with a final quarter of football to play. The final quarter saw Masala very quickly swing the game in their favour adding goal after goal after goal after goal to almost halve the margin, however, it was too little too late as the Falcons were able to apply the pressure and enter lockdown mode for the final 5 minutes to leave with a 16-point victory.

Masala’s goalkickers were headed up by Luke Decarne with 3 majors with other multiple goalkickers including Zac Pahos (2) and Luke Broomhall (2). Multiple goal scorers for the Falcons included Sam Lee (3), Christopher Marson (2), Reece French-Lightfoot (2), Alistair Lupo (2) and Benjamin Wood (2). In the best for Masala were Flynn Cassar, Jordan Gibbon and Deakin Harris. In the best for the Falcons were Hunter Harding, Paul Hutchins and Sam Lee. Masala, desperate for a win now faces Box Hill North (away) in what is going to be another challenge for the Tigers. Having won 5 of their last 6, the Falcons will return home and look to continue their winning ways as they face Eley Park.

The second match of the round saw St Johns take on Box Hill North in another match that would give us great insight for the last few rounds of the season. St Johns coming in as the underdogs had the best start possible with a 6-goal to 2 quarter taking a 21-point lead into the second quarter. The second quarter saw the Demons make their way back into the game with a 4-goal quarter to reduce the JOCs lead down to 8 points.

The third quarter saw both teams put their foot on the accelerator with a 7-goal quarter (4 for the JOCs and 3 for the Demons) but with that one-goal advantage, the JOCs were able to slightly extend their lead out to 12 points. The final quarter saw another tight contest between the two sides with a very competitive quarter. The JOCs however were able to hold off the late charge of the Demons and with the JOCs attaining 1 more goal than the Demons, the JOCs were able to provide one of the upsets of the season with an 18-point victory.

The JOCs had 3 major goal scorers hit the scoreboard in Mitchell Clarke (5), Liam Salisbury (4) and Kailum Newland (4). For the Demons Jack Dullard led the charge with 3 goals. Other multiple goal scorers for the Demons were Joshua Chivers (2) and Thomas Rickard (2). In the best for the JOCs were Corey Ely, Mitchell Clarke and Daniel Cattolico. In the best for the Demons were Rowan Lawrence, Jack Dullard and Thomas Rickard. St Johns will look to continue their ways as they face the next challenge in top side North Brunswick. The Demons will look to rebound quickly as they play host to the struggling Masala.

The final match of the round saw opposite ends of the ladder face off as the bottom of the ladder Eley Park had the mammoth obstacle of the divisions’ leader North Brunswick. The first quarter saw the Bulls get off to a winning start with a 4-goal to 1 quarter to take a 24-point lead into the second quarter. The second quarter saw the Bulls stomp their foot on the accelerator as they were able to pile on 8 goals whilst keeping the Sharks scoreless to extend their lead out to 77 points making a very tough ask for a Sharks comeback.

The third quarter was another one that was won by the Bulls however the Sharks showed great defense throughout, keeping the Bulls to 4 goals. A 111-point lead at 3 quarter time for the Bulls clearly wasn’t enough as in their final quarter they led an absolute rampage on the scoreboard with a 12-goal quarter (one of the best quarters this season) to take their lead all the way out to 181 points in the divisions biggest win of the season that included 49 scoring shots for the game.

Tom Johnston was Mr Reliable in front of goals for the Sharks kicking 2 goals. The Bulls had 14 individual goal scorers with Gabriel Carrubba (4), James Miralles Lombardo (3), Jake Horwood (3) and Luke Rositani (3) leading the charge. In the best for the Sharks were Zachary Hayes, Andrew Yeo and Shannon Blewitt. In the best for the Bulls were Simon Woodward, Spencer Zahra and Zac Dicianni. The Sharks will now face arguably the team’s most in-form side as they make the trip away to face Albert Park. The Bulls, however, will now return home where they take on the JOCs who are coming off one of the upsets of the season.

ROUND 14 TIPS

MILESTONES

Mathanki Winayakan (Ivanhoe AFC)

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates Ivies stalwart Mathanki Winayakan on her 50 th game in Round 13. As her nickname Tank implies, Mathanki is highly regarded for her determined attack on the ball. She joined the Ivies in 2019 and quickly adapted to the pace and physicality of Division 1 footy. A smart reader of the play, Mathanki gets a regular role in defence and is quick to set up counter thrusts with clever passes and switch plays. Well done and keep on rolling Tank!

Joel Petrie (Ivanhoe AFC)

Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates Joel Petrie on his 50 th game in Round 13. Joel is an Ivanhoe product, progressing through Ivanhoe Juniors to Under 19s in 2018. He has been a reserves regular and has since stepped up to play a midfield role in the seniors. Joel is a fierce competitor - a hard in-and-under player who also has a strength at driving through contests and taking the game on. His effort on the park and drive as a competitor is first class. He is a great role player by always putting teammates first. Well done, Joel. You’re on a roll!

Jemima Broadhead (Glen Eira Gryphons)

Congratulations to Jemima Broadhead who is running out for her 50th game this weekend for Glen Eira. Jemima has been a solid contributor to the women’s senior team since the inaugural season in 2019. Being a premiership player and dedicated off field presence around the club, we are extremely grateful to have her year after year. On the field she is an incredible forward target and can kick a goal from anywhere in any pocket. A beautiful drop punt and a loud voice that will surely pump the girls up during the game. Thank you for all your hard work, Jemima, do the girls proud on Sat! Good luck.

Kaitlyn Ritchie (La Trobe University)

Congratulations to La Trobe’s Kaitlyn Ritchie on reaching 50 games – Ritchie first joined the ‘Trobers in 2017 playing as a very reliable forward known for her strong marking and work inside 50. Ritchie played VFLW in 2022 before returning to La Trobe in 2023 where she has been deployed to centre half back, becoming one of the competition’s best rebound defenders and controlling the airspace in the back half. Well done Ritchie on joining a select group of 17 ‘Trober women who have played 50 games in the red & black!

Dary Thorn (La Trobe University)

Congratulations to La Trobe’s Darcy Thorn on reaching 50 games – Thorny first joined the ‘Trobers in 2019 playing in the Under 19s as well as playing 6 senior games after debuting in Round 5. He played in all 3 men’s teams during the COVIDaffected 2021 season and was a member of the 2022 premiership team. Thorny grew up in Broome, Western Australia and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old for Towns in the West Kimberley League. A speedy and elusive wingman who provides plenty of ball to the forwards, but like all good wingmen he also loves to sneak forward and score goals of his own! Well done Thorny on playing 50 games in the red & black and may there be many more!

Fred Osborn (Old Scotch)

Congratulations to Fred Osborn on reaching 50 games for Old Scotch Football Club. Fred joined the club from Scotch College and Glen Iris in 2018, playing in the under 19 Grand Final team that year. Fred has predominantly played in the under 23s (Foundation member) and 3rd XVIII since. Fred is leading the way with the unbeaten Sharks in 2023. We wish Fred all the best on reaching this milestone.

Anna Purtill, Eliza Grills, Stacey Barbagallo (Monash Blues FC)

At the Monash Blues FC, Round 14 marks a very special weekend as we have not one, not two, but THREE incredible players reaching their 50-game milestone with our club. Congratulations to MBFC Senior Women’s players Anna “AP” Purtill, Eliza Grills and Stacey Barbagallo on playing 50 games! AP is a utility around the ground, bringing her agility and speed to every contest. And when you have the self-professed best haircut in the league, she brings undeniable style to the side. Grillsy is a competitive force in the mid-field, known widely for her chase-down tackles and guaranteed second, third and fourth efforts at any point in the game! Stace loves a snag and bag, her sleek grabs paired with an unstoppable right boot is a force up forward any day of the week. These three incredible players are core members of our Women’s program and exemplify our values of Passion, Commitment, Respect and Gratitude. From the whole club a HUGE congratulations again to these three Ashes legends!

Mark Ramanathan (Glen Eira Gryphons)

Congratulations ‘Costi’ on playing 100 VAFA games. An incredible athlete with strong hands and terrific kick, Costi has been taking marks on the lead and kicking bags of snags at Packer Park for over a decade after moving across from Oakleigh after winning the 2009 U18s Premiership. Having played Seniors, Reserves, and now Thirds football at Glen Eira, Tom has been a great servant of our football club and we look forward to him playing for a few more seasons yet.

St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers claw back with a vengeance

Round 12 is now behind us in what was a gritty and tightly contested weekend of football. This U19 Premier section is one of the tightest in recent history.

Only five teams will play finals, yet there are four teams sitting on six wins each. St. Kevins is sitting one win clear of the pack but was just torn apart by a young and hungry St. Bedes Mentone/Tigers, sitting in sixth.

Williamstown and Old Scotch are not to be counted out of finals contention either, sitting on 5 wins apiece. A lot can happen in six rounds, all eyes are on the future stars of the competition in U19 Premier.

St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers def. St. Kevins by 29 points

SBMT have kept their season alive with a ruthless victory against the top placed SKOB. The hard-nosed Tigers remained on top from the outset, not allowing their opponent to play the composed style their accustomed to. The large crowd were treated to a fiery contest under the lights at Brindisi St.

The consistent nucleus of J. Harding, J. Turner, F. Chandler, H. Gleeson, L. Bowles, & T. Nash stood tall for the home side. Whilst L. Dunn, H. Gleeson & L. Bowles combined for 6 majors. SBMT didn’t allow themselves to be intimidated by the classy SKOB and played a game style conducive to their home deck. SKOB have been a class above all season and will be disappointed to have missed a scalp against a team they defeated 5 weeks ago.

St. Kevins will look ahead to Old Brighton this week, a match they must win to remain on top. St. Bedes will face University Blues in what will be great test for the youthful side.

Williamstown CYMS def. University Blues by 17 points

Another result which illustrates the claustrophobia of this section. Uni entered this game 2 games clear of the CYs and were yet defeated by an uncompromising Williamstown side. Williamstown remain one of most dangerous teams on their home deck but just haven’t been able to string together consistent away performances that would fuel their descent up the ladder.

Z. Provest has been a pillar for the CYs throughout this entire season. His 4 majors were important in closing out this contest. He now sits second in the division for goals scored. A. Fernandes was best afield with a high possession count and 3 goals.

Uni are now one of four teams sitting 6-6 and will need to secure some wins to stay in the top 5. It wasn’t a poor performance by any means, but they’ll need to make some small adjustments with only six rounds remaining. I. Dykes,

J. Ryan, T. O’’Brien, T. Ingram, H. Meggitt & J. McMahon were all admirable in a losing side.

Uni will play St. Bedes Mentone in RD13, another side which sits 6-6. Whilst Williamstown will test themselves against Old Xavier.

Old Xavierians def. Old Brighton by 44 points

Old Xaverians remains a big player in this section after a convincing win against Old Brighton. The Xavs are sitting in a good position at this point of the season, 2nd on the ladder and plethora of depth to utilise. Brighton have fallen to the middle of the pack but are a more than capable side.

W. Exell had a monster game for Old Xavier, making an impact high up the ground whilst scoring 4 majors. W. Wrigley, T. Bourne, C. Bourne, A. Scally & J. Sassi were all terrific in an important win.

Old Brighton started in a sluggish manner, scoring a singular point in the opening quarter. With 6 rounds remaining, it is possible that fatigue may be starting to set in for the young side. J. Campigli, L. Mccluskey, R. Mckenzie, T. Rohan, M. Bierens & J. Caldwell did all they could to try wrestle back the margin.

Old Xavierians will face Williamstown in an important match this weekend. Old Brighton will go up against St. Kevins, a match that will likely dictate their finals eligibility.

St. Bernards def by. Caulfield Grammarians by 68 points

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear St. Bernards season will get any better. They’ve gone 12 rounds without a win and have struggled to match the standard required at U19 Premier level. Caulfield’s season has been impressive in spurts, but they find themselves 6-6 and will need to work hard to capture a finals berth.

D. Gilham, J. Rendelmann, D. Restuccia, T. Lowrie, A. Ryan & M. Loukomitis were all admirable for St. Bernards. Despite not being able to capture a win, their overall scoring has been impressive. D. Gilham was able to slot 4 in a losing side.

Caulfield were impressive for the duration of the contest.
