The Amateur Footballer 2024 - Week 14

Page 1

SEASON 2024

July 27

As our Amateur players and volunteers continue to brave the cold winter chill that has descended upon Melbourne for the month of July, inspiration is not far away as many VAFA eyes are looking forward to the commencement of the 2024 VAFA finals series.

With 32 Divisions and 131 finals matches to manage across a seven week period, the VAFA Football department has been hard at work to secure enough appropriate venues to service these games.

It is pleasing to announce that we have secured four state league venues for use in 2024, namely:

• Box Hill City Oval, Box Hill

• Coburg City Oval, Coburg

• ETU Stadium, Port Melbourne

• Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval, Sandringham

This will be followed by the Women’s Divisional finals starting on the weekend of August 17/18.

An important online Members Meeting will precede the start of the women’s finals. This meeting will be held on Monday August 12 for Clubs to consider and vote on proposed rule changes that impact the finals eligibility of players.

Sunday August 18 will also see the grand final of the Mecwacare Masters competition being contested.

we are aiming to attract a larger than usual crowd

These will compliment our traditional home of VAFA finals Elsternwick Park, and be supplemented by finals venues Waverley Oval, Malvern East; Whitefriars College, Donvale; Carey Grammar, Bulleen.

Back up venues are being negotiated in the event that the above grounds become unavailable due to weather conditions.

This year’s finals series will kick off with the Men’s Thirds semi finals on the weekend of August 10/11. Due to limits on grounds being used for regular home and away games, the finals on this weekend will be played at the home ground of the higher ranked team.

For the first time ever, the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final will be played on the public holiday Friday 27th September, that precedes the AFL Grand Final on the Saturday. As one of the only football matches taking place on this day, we are aiming to attract a larger than usual crowd to witness the cream of our men’s competition doing battle.

U19’s and Divisional Men’s finals commence on weekend Aug 31/ Sept 1; Premier B & C Men’s and William Buck Premier & Premier B Women’s commence on Sept 7 /8; whilst Premier Men’s commence on September 14/15.

Fixtures for each weekend’s finals will be released by close of business on the Monday preceding

Tickets will be available for online pre-purchase via VAFA’s website in the lead up to each game or as a card only payment option at the gate on match day.

Ticket prices will remain unchanged from 2023 with details to be published.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S

Reigning premiers back into Top 4 in Premier Men’s

The Top 4 and relegation races both saw some movement after a wet and windy Round 12 of William Buck Premier Men’s. 2023 champions Collegians climbed back up into the Top 4 thanks to a percentage-boosting win over University Blacks at Melbourne University Oval.

The Lions set the game up in the first half, opening up a 43-point lead at the major break before Blacks closed it to 38 at the last change.

But given they’re in the midst of a tight finals race where percentage may end up the deciding factor, Collegians put the foot down in the last quarter, slamming on 7 goals to 1 and powering away to an emphatic 76-point win that saw them edge past Old Xavs on percentage.

It sets up a blockbuster as Collegians host Old Xavs at Harry Trott, while Uni Blacks face a critical clash against St Bernard’s at the Snake Pit.

Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “On a wet and heavy deck we were able to get on top around the contest for the majority of the day and moved the ball quickly and efficiently.

“It was a team effort, with Nathan Boucher leading from the front. Will Pewtress continued his strong year down back, and Dyl Thomas played his best game for the year providing plenty of spark in the forward half.”

Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We were unable to stop Collegians’ ability to create clean ball movement from multiple types of situations.

“Cam Moorfield, Ben Oliver, James Clark and Ben Stephenson played very well for us. We will look to ready ourselves for a massive game with St.Bernard’s next week.”

Old Scotch flicked the switch at half-time to likely end St Bernard’s finals hopes.

The Snowdogs booted the only 3 goals of the second term to grab a 12-point half-time lead, holding the Cardinals to a single goal.

Old Scotch dominated the early stages of the third term but kicked 1.6 before slamming on 4 goals in 8 minutes.

The Cardinals shut the gate with the opening 3 goals of the final term, pulling away to a 35-point win that maintains their onegame advantage in third.

Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “After a pretty dour affair in the first half we were really pleased with the response after half time. We put it on a few boys to step up and they did. In particular, Ryan Valentine, Ben Hays, Jack Brown and the skipper - Andy Jelbart led the way.

“We welcomed two more debutants - Hugh Byrne-Jones and 19 year-old Ned Maginness. One of the highlights of the day was when Ned kicked his first goal and all other 17 players got over to him! There is great spirit in this group and we are building nicely.”

Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “After an encouraging first half where we really took it up to our opposition, like too often this season we were unable to sustain the effort and negate the slick ball movement of Old Scotch for the second half.”

St Kevin’s continued their winning streak with a 23-point victory over University Blues at TH King Oval.

The hosts led by 3 goals at the half, which felt like significantly more in the wet and windy conditions.

It was a goal apiece in the third term, during which popular SKOB Michael Pisker suffered a nasty accidental head clash.

The entire VAFA community wishes Michael and his family all the best for his speedy recovery and spare a thought for everyone impacted by this unfortunate accident.

SKOB would go on to post their seventh straight win but all our thoughts remain with Michael and his family.

Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “Unfortunately it’s difficult to think about anything other than the health and wellbeing of Michael and his family at this time. This accidental incident has definitely rocked our whole club.

“Football is secondary at this time. My only comment would be how proud I was of the playing group to stay focused and deliver against quality opposition whilst dealing with the emotion of seeing a great mate get badly injured.”

Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “A really tough, physical game in trying conditions.

“I felt the game was pretty even across the board but SKOB just ‘out executed’ us at stages. They were a little bit cleaner and capitalised on their opportunities which is massive in a lowscoring game.

“I was really impressed with Sam Hayes in the ruck and Hamish Yunghanns around the midfield. Their workrate and continual effort was outstanding.”

Old Xaverians made it back-to-back wins with a 49-point victory over Fitzroy at Toorak Park.

Xavs seized the initiative with the first 3 goals of the second term to open a useful 32-point half-time lead, then booted 4 unanswered goals in the third.

As has been the case all season, the Roys refused to go quietly, kicking 3 goals to 2 in the final term (all to Jack Hart) but it was Old Xavs collecting another 4 precious premiership points with a comfortable 49-point victory.

Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “I was really pleased again with the effort and overall result in trying conditions. It was Fitzroy’s first ever visit to Toorak Park and similar to last time out, they pushed us all the way. They certainly don’t throw the towel in, and I feel they can win some games in the run home to give themselves the best chance of staying up.

“It was great to get some game time into a few returning senior players in Dan Tuddenham, Denis Symyopoulos and, of course, Dan Hannebery. I thought the skipper Marcus Stavrou was fantastic, and he led the way along with Alec Spralja in the ruck.”

Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “We were competitive early but Xavs went up a gear in the second quarter and we were unable to go with them.

“We fought the game out which was pleasing and started to play some better footy which hopefully will create some momentum going into next week. Our backline defended well all day led by Darcy Lowrie while Ramshaw and Seakins provided plenty of drive in the midfield.”

Old Brighton successfully defended their one-game lead on top when they defeated Old Melburnians at Brighton Beach Oval.

Despite being scoreless into the breeze into the opening term, OMs headed to the first break happy with holding the Tonners to just 1.9.

Frustrated by their inability to capitalise early, the league-leaders stepped it up in the second quarter, kicking 4 goals to 2 into the wind to lead by 27 points at the half.

The third quarter was a replica of the first as the Tonners dominated but repeatedly sprayed opportunities with the wind, booting 1.6 to 1.3 as OMs battled on.

However, the result was never in doubt as the premiership favourites banked their 11th win – youngster Jonah Campigli outstanding in a best-on-ground performance in his sixth senior game.

Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Challenging conditions with a breeze towards the cricket nets that neither team really took advantage of. OMs beat us at the source, but we were able to get to work outside the contest and often get the ball back then try and shift lanes to get better entries.

“Really pleased with our work into the breeze and our ability to kick the majority of goals against the wind. Our Under 19 vicecaptain Joey Campigli competed really effectively all day and Alfie Jarnestrom controlled his wing.”

Paul Satterley (OMs): “On a very tough day given the weather conditions and wind, we held up well against the breeze in both quarters. Unfortunately, Brighton were able to score going into it and credit to them and how they play.

We had made 8 changes to our side going into the game with so we trust they will all be better for the run.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S

Scotch Stars continue to dazzle

The William Buck Premier Women’s competition was welcomed back from the double bye with wild and wintery conditions, asking the question of which teams are the best at wet weather footy.

To kick things off, two finals contenders in Collegians and Caulfield Grammarians faced off, with Caulfield coming out on top.

Both sides struggled to adapt to the wet conditions in the first term, as the two teams combined for just three scoring shots. Accuracy proved to be the main difference in the first half, with Caulfield kicking three straight goals to take an 8-point lead into the main break.

Caulfield were able to assert their dominance in the third, adding another 19 points to their tally while holding Collegians scoreless, however, Collegians kicked the last two majors of the game to bring the final margin back to 20 points.

The win might prove crucial in the finals race, with Caulfield now sitting just two points behind 4th-placed Collegians.

The conditions did not seem to affect Serena Kuo who was immense for Grammarians, finishing with three goals and the best-on honours. For Collegians, Krystal Russell and Scarlett Orritt were brave in defeat.

Coburg were no match for Old Scotch when the two sides met at Piranha Park, with the visitors trouncing the home side by 33 points.

Old Scotch led at every break, with their star power proving far too strong for Coburg. Had Old Scotch been more accurate in front of goals, the scoreline could have looked a lot worse for the Lions, with the final scores reading 3.0 (18) to 6.15 (51).

2024 Big V players, Amy Duguid and Mia Cowan, were in the best for their respective sides, with Cowan finishing the day with an impressive five majors.

West Brunswick have kept themselves in finals contention, with a 31-point win over Monash Blues

It was a tough first quarter for both sides, with neither managing to score. Monash got on the board first with a point early in the second term, after which West Brunswick began to take control.

West Brunswick really found their footing in the second half, kicking four goals while only allowing Monash one additional behind.

Taylah Watson was the only multiple goal scorer of the game, rightfully earning the praise of her coaches. For Monash, Ella Stephenson impressed with her never-saydie attitude.

Melbourne University were at home for their annual First Nations match, celebrating indigenous culture in a special day. The Mugars were aiming to do what no other side has been able to do so far in 2024 – defeat St Kevin’s.

It was a tight first half in which both teams held slender leads at different stages.

At half time when the scores were deadlocked at 16 apiece, the Mugars would have been hopeful of causing an almighty upset and registering their third win of the season. However, St Kevin’s had different ideas and did what they have done all season, upping the ante in the second half to kick a further 3.4 (22) whilst holding Melbourne University scoreless to run away comfortable winners at the end.

St Kevin’s had five individual goal kickers in the absence of key forward, Sarah Cameron, while Tess Cattle named as their best on ground.

For Melbourne University, Jolyn Collins stood tall with a strong performance, while Nell Washington battled hard in what was her 50th game for the club.

Kew were looking to hold their place in the top 3 when they travelled to Doncaster Reserve to take on Old Yarra Cobras, who were at risk of a sixth consecutive loss.

Ashlea Melnikas got the Bears off to a strong start, kicking the only goal of the first term in what were challenging conditions. By half-time, Kew had worked hard to establish a 25-point lead, keeping the Cobras scoreless. The Cobras managed to wrestle their way back in the second half, holding their own to fall by 28 points at the final siren.

Evie Lee was recognised post-match for her strong performance for the home side, while Amelia Dawborn dominated from start to finish for Kew.

With six rounds remaining, there appears to be six sides still in finals contention, while four sides are left to battle their way out of relegation.

In Round 13, Caulfield will be seeking revenge against Old Yarra Cobras for the 1-point loss they experienced in their previous encounter, while Coburg are looking to break a 3-match losing streak but will come up against a tough opponent in Kew. The top two sides will face the bottom two sides, with Monash Blues travelling to Righetti Oval to face an intimidating St Kevin’s outfit while Melbourne University will come up against Old Scotch at Camberwell Sportsground. The final match looks to be the match of the round, as Collegians will host West Brunswick with a lot at stake for the two finals contenders.

PREMIER B MEN’S

Old Geelong continue march up Prem B ladder

Old Geelong’s march up the Premier B ladder has continued with an eight-point victory over Old Camberwell in difficult conditions at Gordon Barnard Reserve - the OGs’ winning streak now at four games, and their position in fourth shored up by Old Trinity’s defeat of Old Ivanhoe.

After a charmed run with weather to start the season, winter has truly kicked in, with many games across the competition played on boggy ovals in wet and windy conditions.

Nathan Brown’s side had a tough task on the road, made even more difficult when the Wellers booted the only three goals of the first term.

The home side had the run of play, and when Jay Kennedy-Harris kicked his second goal at the 13-minute mark of the final term to put Old Camberwell two goals clear, it appeared the Wellers were in the box seat for their eighth win of the season.

But three goals in six minutes saw the OGs turn the game completely, holding fast to win 9.6 (60) to 7.10 (52).

Nathan Brown was ecstatic with his side’s ability to run out the game strongly - a trait the OGs have developed after a few poor finishes earlier in the season

“(It’s) consistency of training from the lads, and then we’ve been pretty consistent in the games,” Brown said.

Despite a tough loss, the game served plenty of opportunities to teach for Old Camberwell coach Anson Brownless.

“Good learnings for us - we’ll go and have a look at that game and see where we need to be..we’ll get a lot out of that, as disappointing as it was”.

James Allen (31 disposals, 12 tackles) and Harry Veitch (28 disposals, eight clearances) continued their strong seasons for the Wellers - Allen cracking the Premier Data ranking points ton for the tenth time this season.

Old Geelong is even on points yet some 16% behind third-placed Old Trinity, which enjoyed some revenge over Old Ivanhoe following a thriller between the two clubs back in Round 4 that fell the Hoers’ way.

With some key players out of the side, the Hoers would have fancied their chances at home, and were within striking distance when Charlie Simonsen kicked a goal to cut Old Trinity’s lead to five points late in the third term.

However, Old Trinity finished strongly, kicking five goals to one in the final term to scoot away 13.16 (94) to 7.10 (52) winners at Chelsworth Park, with Old Ivanhoe reduced to no rotations halfway through the third quarter.

“You needed all your troops firing at the end, because everyone was out on their feet. You don’t play in those conditions too often,” Old Trinity coach Donald McDonald said.

Spencer Barendregt, who has stepped ably into the ruck position without Harry Thompson, was terrific with 52 hitouts while Christos Manoussakis continued a stellar season with 32 disposals (21 contested), eight clearances and eight tackles.

Jarrod Gieschen, counting the injury cost of the game (two concussions, a hand injury to Sam Keogh and a back injury to Mal Mitris), was impressed by McDonald’s group.

“They played the conditions exceptionally well,” he said.

“Credit to them - their kids that came in really stood up.”

Old Haileybury didn’t have their own way over a spirited St Bede’s / Mentone, which continued its competitive run but ultimately fell short for a third loss of seven points or less in its last five games.

In a heavily contested game, the ball lived in tight, favouring the returning Brede Seccull, excellent with 33 disposals (17 contested) and 10 clearances.

“He’s up there in the top two or three (best players in the competition),” said St Bede’s / Mentone coach Brad Berry of Seccull, praising the 2024 Big V nominee in his battle with Tigers midfield duo Matt Lehpahmer (22 disposals) and Jake Ryder (17 tackles).

The Bloods led by 22 points at half time and were able to hold that margin for much of the second half, but two late goals to St Bede’s Mentone brought back the margin to seven points at full time - the Bloods victorious 5.18 (48) to 5.11 (41).

“They’ve obviously improved, and they’ve been in good form in the last month,” said Old Haileybury coach Daniel Ward.

To Round 7, the Tigers had lost all their games, with an average losing margin of 48 points. From Round 8 onwards, they’ve secured a win while bringing in its average losing margin to just 13.5 points in an encouraging sign for Brad Berry’s developing group.

Sam Beasley, son of Tigers legend Tim Beasley, made his longawaited senior debut after a torrid time with injury and a short break from football.

Midfielder/forward Jack Cain also made his debut and was impressive, while a third debutant, teenager Oliver Griffin, kicked two goals and perhaps most impressively backed up for the Under 17s the following day.

Beaumaris led at every change to secure an away win over Caulfield Grammarians at Glen Huntly Park, making a clean break late in the second quarter with a five-goal run that established a 28-point margin.

The Grammarians had a chance late to press the Sharks, but kicked 1.3 from the 19-minute mark to the 26-minute mark of the final term, ultimately falling short 9.8 (62) to 11.10 (76).

Of the Sharks who have stepped up in a year full of injuries, Nate Dear (older brother of Hawthorn’s Calsher) has been excellent, and booted his fourth haul of three goals this season.

“He’s done a really super job this year in difficult circumstances,” Bourke said.

Guy McKenna is in much the same boat regarding player availability, and was impressed by his young group’s endeavour.

“We had six fellas over the age of 20…you can’t fault the boys’ effort at all, they give all they’ve got,” he said.

Young ruck Harvey Dawson - “as raw as a greyhound’s dinner,” says McKenna - was promising despite the tough assignment of Cal Heath, while Jared Freeman has found a home in Caulfield’s midfield rotation.

Finally, De La Salle overcame muddy conditions and a determined Williamstown CYMS, breaking free in the third quarter to win 12.9 (81) to 7.7 (49) in a contest that didn’t match the scoreboard.

A talented contested side, the CYs had the early ascendancy in the clinches and led at the first break, before De La Salle gained control of the match in the second quarter to take a slender lead into half time.

De La kicked two goals in the first six minutes of the second half to establish a three-goal advantage, adding another major to create a 24-point buffer that proved too difficult to haul back.

Hyland’s unit were hyper-efficient despite difficult conditions, kicking 8.1 across the middle quarters, and were able to force a muddy, waterlogged football into dangerous scoring positions.

“(Scoring efficiency) we’ve really focused on over the last six weeks,” Hyland said.

Fraser Cameron recorded 23 disposals and nine clearances to go with his two goals, while Lachie Gawel snagged three goals from his 16 disposals.

CYs coach Con Terzoglou was left to rue his side’s slow starts to quarters.

“We conceded five goals within the first five minutes of the first, second and third quarters combined,” he said.

The CYs host Old Haileybury this week at Fearon Reserve where Terzoglou’s squad will be hard to beat, while De La have a date with Old Trinity at Daley Oval in what looms as the key clash of the weekend. Look for St Bede’s / Mentone to continue its improvement when it hosts Old Ivanhoe at Brindisi Street, and for Old Geelong to attempt to secure its fifth consecutive win against Caulfield Grammarians at Como Park. Beaumaris’ clash with Old Camberwell rounds out Round 13.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S

Old Geelong and Beaumaris impress as CY’s continue dominance

With only three rounds to go, Round 13 of Premier B Women’s offered a rich tapestry of footy, with teams hustling to gain some critical ladder positions as the season edges closer to the finals. From big victories to hard-fought battles, the weekend’s fixtures had it all.

Old Geelong delivered a strong performance against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers with a decisive 9.5 (59) – 2.7 (19) victory. The home side set the tone early, with their midfield exerting dominance from the first bounce and providing plenty of deep entries.

Old Geelong’s forwards capitalised on their midfield’s dominance, with Leanora Aruci proving unstoppable inside 50. Aruci’s strong marking and accurate kicking were pivotal, finishing the match with four goals. Brooke McKay and Kathleen Dunn also displayed dominance for Old Geelong throughout the match, earning themselves best on ground.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers struggled to match Old Geelong’s intensity and execution. Georgia Ricardo, Nina Coghill, and Madeleine Tilley put in a big shift on the field, and the team showed moments of brilliance. However, despite some impressive efforts in the midfield, the Tigers were unable to generate sufficient forward momentum. Their defence, under relentless pressure, couldn’t hold back the tide of Old Geelong’s attacks.

In a gritty contest, Fitzroy emerged victorious over Westbourne Grammarians, securing a 3.6 (24) – 1.3 (9) win that highlighted their defensive prowess and midfield resilience. The game was a hard-fought battle, with both teams displaying fierce determination.

Fitzroy’s defence across the field was the cornerstone of their victory, with Georgina Bennett, Simone Mooney, and Nessa Cooney Hunt being particularly strong. The team’s ability to intercept and turn defence into attack was crucial, consistently blocking Westbourne’s forward momentum. The midfield, though heavily contested, managed to gain the upper hand, providing enough supply to their forwards, with Esther Boles kicking two and Georgia Bennett kicking one.

Westbourne Grammarians showed plenty of fight, particularly in the midfield, who were relentless for the entirety of the match. Kiara Henry, Jade Desira, and Manaia Huta were standouts for the match. However, their inability to convert forward entries into goals proved costly. Despite their efforts, they found Fitzroy’s defence impenetrable, with Kiara Henry being the only one to manage to convert a goal for her team.

Williamstown CYMS continued their unbeaten run with a comprehensive 3.10 (28) – 0.1 (1) victory over Aquinas OC. The ladder leaders showcased their defensive might, restricting Aquinas to just a solitary point.

The CYMS’ defensive line was impenetrable, effectively shutting down any offensive attempts by Aquinas. The midfield’s tireless efforts and sharp ball use set the tempo for Williamstown, allowing their forwards to capitalise on opportunities.

Sofi Georgas and Alessia Acquaro were again instrumental, converting opportunities into goals and maintaining their impressive form. The teamwork and discipline displayed by Williamstown highlighted why they are the team to beat this season.

Aquinas OC found it challenging to break through Williamstown’s staunch defence. Despite honourable efforts from Millie Edwards, Hannah Virgona, and Ava Campbell, the team struggled to make an impact on the scoreboard. Nevertheless, Aquinas displayed great moments of defence and keeping the undefeated side to three goals is commendable.

Beaumaris put on a clinic against Old Xaverians, cruising to a dominant 10.9 (69) – 1.1 (7) victory. The home side’s attacking prowess was on full display, with their forwards enjoying a day out. Ella Southgate’s day out was particularly enjoyable, kicking a bag of four goals.

Anna Sutcliffe, Zoe Barbakos, and Ashley van Rooyen were the stars for Beaumaris, leading the charge with their strong repeated efforts and tenacity. Supported by a midfield that provided a constant stream of quality ball, the forward line was able to wreak havoc inside 50.

Old Xaverians were unable to stem the tide, with their defence under siege from the relentless Beaumaris attack. Despite the dominant efforts of Katharine Mullins,

Vanessa Murphy, and Hannah Ryan, the visitors struggled to contain the home side’s forward onslaught, with Chiara Chiarelli being the lone goal scorer for her side. Old Xav’s defensive pressure, however, was noticeable throughout the match, forcing Beaumaris to kick 9 behinds.

As the season heads towards the finish line, the competition is heating up. Williamstown CYMS remain the benchmark, their unbeaten run a testament to their consistency and strength across the board. Fitzroy’s resilience and defensive strength position them well for the finals, while Old Geelong’s comprehensive victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers highlights their potential to be a major contender for the flag.

Beaumaris’ dominant performance underscores their attacking capabilities, making them a team to watch in the run-up to the finals. Meanwhile, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, Westbourne Grammarians, Aquinas OC, and Old Xaverians will need to aim for strong finishes to the season.

Round 13 provided a snapshot of the quality and competitiveness that define the VAFA Women’s Prem B competition. As teams jostle for finals positions, every match becomes crucial, promising more thrilling encounters and standout performances in the weeks to come.

Round 14 of VAFA Women’s Prem B promises exciting matchups. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers face Beaumaris in a crucial clash for ladder positioning. Aquinas OC hosts Old Geelong, looking to rebound from recent losses, while Old Geelong aims to maintain their finals push. Williamstown CYMS take on a strong Fitzroy side in the round’s marquee matchup. Finally, Westbourne Grammarians battle Old Xaverians, with both teams eager for a strong finish to the season.

PREMIER C MEN’S

Hampton Rovers end Old Carey’s winning streak

After a two-week break, Premier C action resumed in Round 12 with two top four encounters and some surprise results that keeps the competition well and truly alive and unpredictable.

Old Carey hosted the Hampton Rovers at Bulleen, in which the Rovers came away 47-point winners, bringing to a halt Old Carey’s nine-game winning streak and mighty average winning margin of 70 points. This game had ebbs and flows with both sides having periods of resurgence and stagnation.

The Rovers started flat, but burst out of the blocks in the second quarter, whilst Old Carey had a dominant third quarter, and by three-quarter time, the Rovers lead by a narrow three points. This game would be won by the side with the most hunger and determination, and despite the best efforts of Old Carey, it was the Rovers who stood up in the final quarter kicking towards the scoring end, piling on seven goals to Old Carey’s single behind. Hampton’s win sees them draw level with Old Carey on the ladder, with the Panthers ahead on percentage.

The other top-four battle this round saw AJAX defeat Parkdale Vultures by 19 points to see them finish the round in top spot, one game clear of second and third. Parkdale controlled the game in the first half with good ball movement and many scoring opportunities inside 50 which resulted in a 21-point lead at half-time.

However, the Vultures fell away in the third quarter as AJAX changed the momentum of the game with four goals spread amongst their key forwards, and continued that charge in the final term to win comfortably in front of their home crowd. Jordan Cohen, Richie Simon and Justin Vogel starred up forward for AJAX, whilst despite the loss, Nathan Sullivan and Lloyd Bailey each had a good game for Parkdale.

The Monash Blues returned to form with an energetic 54-point victory over Marcellin. The Blues came out firing early as accuracy in front of the scoreboard aided them to a 27-point lead at quarter time. Marcellin turned things around in the second quarter to outscore the home side and work down the deficit to 22 points, however Monash quickly accounted for Marcellin’s resurgence with a further six goals in the third quarter and another four in the final term to comfortably win the game and claim the four points.

This was a good day out for Monash, reminding Premier C why they won the premiership in 2022, as they finish the round on 9th, equal on points with Marcellin who sit 8th. Alex Bennett impressed for the home side with four goals, whilst Elias Stapleton likewise kicked four goals for Marcellin.

Mazenod, continuing to push for a top four spot, defeated PEGS by 50 points at Central Reserve. Mazenod skilfully controlled the game throughout the first half with a 43-point lead amassed by half-time, which could’ve been higher if not for some inaccuracy in front of goal. PEGS struggled to build on moments of good play in the third quarter as Mazenod grew their lead to 55-points, too much for PEGS to work down in the final term as Mazenod won comfortably. This result has negative ramifications for PEGS who drop down to 7th which will make a run for finals more difficult, whilst it is better news for Mazenod who finish the round in 5th, just one game and a percentage difference out of the top four.

The meeting of the sides promoted from Division 1 resulted in Glen Eira/Old McKinnon defeating Oakleigh by 39 points and climbing the ladder up to 6th position.

The Gryphons got off to a positive start, scoring 5.1.31 to Oakleigh’s 1.1.7 in the first quarter. Both sides had good bursts in the second quarter so by half-time, Oakleigh trailed by 25 points. Unfortunately for the home side, they were picked apart in the third quarter as the Gryphons were dominant in the front half scoring a further five goals and keeping Oakleigh goal-less.

ROUND 12 RESULTS

PREMIER C MEN’S

Monash Blues:

Marcellin:

Despite a much better fourth quarter in which Oakleigh dominated the play, the deficit was too large to work down as the Gryphons claimed the four points. Luke Ashen continued his good season, contributing three of Oakleigh’s seven goals for the afternoon, whilst Ben Reid, Jesse Maxfield and Nicholas Mavropoulos were amongst the best players for the Gryphons.

The competition continues in Round 13 as the top four sides push for a top two finish, whilst Mazenod, in particular, continue to hunt for a finals berth.

6th meets 7th when Glen Eira/Old McKinnon play PEGS. This promises to be a great game as the Gryphons look to settle the score after going down to PEGS earlier in the season. Coming off a big win to Old Carey, the Hampton Rovers host the Monash Blues at Trevor Barker Oval. A win for the Rovers will keep fourth placed Parkdale at bay, whilst the Blues will be looking to keep the good performances going after their win against Marcellin.

The Parkdale Vultures host Oakleigh in an intriguing game for both sides. The Vultures have lost three of their last four so will be looking for a win to return to their early season form, whilst Oakleigh have shown they have a lot of potential and will put up a serious challenge. Elsewhere, Mazenod host Old Carey as they look to keep their finals hopes alive, whilst top of the table AJAX will meet Marcellin.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

The VAFA extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of legendary Victorian football identity Laurie Aghan, who passed away recently at the age of 87.

Laurie lived a full and successful footballing life, playing 372 games and coaching 657 more across numerous leagues. In the VAFA, he worked miracles with his uncompromising hard but fair style. He lifted Reservoir Old Boys from E-to-A grade in consecutive seasons from 1970 to 74, including C & B-Section premierships. On the back of this incredible success, he coached the Big V to victories over South Australia and Tasmania.

He took the reins at Old Scotch in 1976 and led the Cardinals to the 1977 B-Grade flag and the 1978 A-Grade premiership. He was later named Coach in their Team of the Century. Laurie coached Old Melburnians in 1982-83 and led OMs to immediate success with the 1982 premiership before focusing solely on coaching the Big V in 1984 and 85. He returned to Old Scotch as Under 19 coach in 1988 and stepped up to the senior role in 1990.

A wonderful character with a lifetime of stories to tell, Laurie was always fantastic company and will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. A memorial service honouring Laurie’s life will be held on Monday July 29 at Le Pine Funerals (132 Mt Dandenong Rd, Croydon) from 10am.

Hampton Rovers club legend Stephen Anderson ran out for his 500th game in the green & gold last Saturday –with more than 350 of them being VAFA games. He’s done it all – from being a senior premiership captain, a Big V representative, President and now Chairman of the Rovers, Life Member, and now playing coach of the Club’s Thirds – you can listen to more of Ando’s story from the ‘VAFA Legends’ Podcast recorded last year. Perhaps most special, Steve is this year playing footy with his two sons and following Saturday’s game, he was chaired off the ground by Ollie and Nick, to the applause of both Rovers and De La Salle players. Congrats Ando!

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

The VAFA congratulates Krystal Russell from Collegians, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 12.

The 19-year-old came up through the Yarraville-Seddon Eagles and played for the Western Jets from 2021-23. Selected for Vic Metro at the Under 17 and Under 18 National Championships, Krystal played 3 games for Essendon VFL last season and another 4 this season.

She joined Collegians this year and has played all 12 senior games, polling Best Player votes in 6 of them, including 2 of the last 3.

What the club said:

Krystal (or KRuss as she is affectionately known around the club) is a favourite amongst the Collegians Women’s squad, and her always positive attitude is infectious and gets others up and about.

Word from the coach:

KRuss’ commitment to her own craft and personal development is second only to her fantastic loyalty to her teammates and club.

This season she has worked extremely hard to juggle her VFLW training and playing commitments with Collegians Women’s Squad, and her studies!

She is fierce around the contest, and works just as hard off ball as on it, which constantly places amongst the top performers on any given week. The excellent player she is today is the result of many years of hard work combined with her natural talent and first class attitude. We are blessed to have KRuss.

Men’s

Rising Star Nominee

Nick Mavropoulos

The VAFA congratulates Nick Mavropoulos from Glen Eira/Old McKinnon, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 12.

The 19-year-old played 4 games in the Under 19s for the Gryphons last season and has stepped up to senior footy this season, playing in all 12 Senior games and polling Best Player votes in 6 of them, including the last two matches against AJAX & Oakleigh. Nick featured in the recent Holmesglen Under 19’s Showcase, taking his place amongst the VAFA’s most promising young talent.

What the club said:

After an impressive pre-season, Nicky Mav was selected in the Senior Men’s Premier C team for Round 1 of the 2024 season and celebrated his 19th birthday by being best afield in his second senior game.

Our club is very proud of Nicky Mav’s achievements so far in his short career. Always smiling, he is a quiet and humble young man who is an absolute joy to watch on the football field and a wonderful person around our club. We look forward to him starring in many more games at Packer Park for years to come.

DIVISION 1 MEN’S

Therry Penola cause an upset in the wet

On the wettest Saturday of the season, teams had to acclimatise to the conditions with some doing it better than others. Therry Penola were one of the sides to adjust quicker, defeating Parkside. Round 13 hasn’t made things any clearer on the top four race which is what we all want to see coming into the last five weeks of the regular season.

Prahran remain two games clear on top after defeating UHS-VU by 28 points. Coming into the match it was the top two sides on the ladder facing off and at quarter time you still couldn’t split the two sides with a goal apiece.

Vultures captain Harrison Kennedy kicked the first while some good pressure by Prahran forward Ethan Plaza helped square it up.

The second term saw Prahran take control with Matt Clifford kicking the first with the help of some great evasion by Thomas Seaman. Taylor Bamford picked off a kick out from Harrison Kennedy as they continued to extend their lead.

Shallow entries made it tough for the Vultures forwards as Luke Gorman played a great game on the leading goal scorer in the competition Brandon Jackson keeping him to just one goal. Defender Jayden Williams was a clear standout for Prahran adding some great run and carry for his side.

Vultures ruckman Liam Starzer battled hard but Rory Brodie was too strong aerially, with the skipper’s side having a handy 26-point lead at half time. In the third term, Matt Clifford continued on his good form with the first major, Mackenzie Mayne spun out of trouble when Vultures midfielder Esubalew Ramsay decided to bump rather than tackle and kicked another.

Meanwhile, Matt Dimattina was the shining light for the Vultures, being skilful in tough conditions, to help his side get two in a row before three-quarter time. With the Vultures almost coming from behind against the Preston Bullants last week they had some hope they could do the same 27 points down but some defensive half turnovers put an end to that.

Therry Penola got their third win of the season defeating top four hopefuls Parkside by five points. With only seven goals kicked for the match, it was hard to separate both sides for the majority. It was back to basics as time in forward half and winning contest was the key to success.

Therry Penola were able to convert their opportunities when it counted better than the Devils with forward Brenton Egglestone kicking two match-defining goals. In the absence of Therry Penola captain Joel Costello, Lucas McKinnon and Matthew Lyons have really stepped up in the past fortnight.

The Old Yarra Cobras brought up their second win of the season after a gutsy 22-point win over West Brunswick. In the wet, the Old Yarra Cobras understood the vital need to win contest and leaders Tom Bell and Nicholas Zappala executed brilliantly in the midfield.

After a handy two-goal lead at the main break for the Old Yarra Cobras it was a real arm wrestle between both sides and a late goal by the Old Yarra Cobras brought up the first for the quarter.

Six scoring shots to one in the third for the Old Yarra Cobras but only one goal for their domination opened the door ajar. West Brunswick couldn’t get going in the last as Nathan

Monaco’s side, who has had a lot of changes to the side recently got the four points.

Old Peninsula continues to surge up the ladder, beating the Kew Bears by 18 points. The Pirates midfield set the tone early with a five-goal to-one first term. Jake Lovett excelled through the midfield as the Bears struggled to find a matchup for Bailey Payze kicking six goals.

Pirates ruckman Lochie Baczyk gave his midfield first use for the majority of the match and was dominant aerially.

Meanwhile, in the last quarter, the Bears kicked the first two goals to bring themselves back within nine points helped by the great ball use from Max Poletti. The Pirates were given a fright but credit to their leaders George Fletcher and Ben Williamson who stood up as their side kicked the next two to close the deal.

Ormond responded strongly after last week’s loss to Prahran, defeating the Preston Bullants by 66 points. Both teams were figuring out the best way to combat the conditions as the Preston Bullants had an 8-point lead at quarter time.

After the first term, it was all the Monders as the elite pressure applied was too hot to handle. Ethan Hanley and Jackson Hille played well through the midfield as their side continued to control territory. The Monders have a great crop of young players including 16-year-old Samuel Bailey. Making his senior debut, Bailey was one of the best on ground kicking three goals.

It was a dirty day though for the Preston Bullants as they managed just one more goal after quarter time.

Round 14 sees the Bears and the Devils fight it out for a topfour spot with both on eight wins.

Old Peninsula are another team wanting the number fourth spot and a win against Therry Penola will assist their quest.

The Preston Bullants will want to respond after a disappointing loss but it won’t be easy as they face the top of the ladder Prahran.

The Old Yarra Cobras will be looking for two in a row as they take on the Vultures needing to find some form.

The Monders are back at home against West Brunswick and will be hard to beat if they bring the intensity from last week.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

Tonners record biggest win of the season in Division 1 Women’s

Now with just three weeks remaining in the home and away season, wins are as important as ever in Division 1 Women’s. And while the top four looks to just about be secure, positions for home finals are vital.

Unfortunately, there were only two of the three games played this weekend with one team forfeiting.

Beginning briefly with that contest, it was Old Haileybury who withdrew from their matchup with Parkdale, handing the Vultures the victory.

The four points means that Parkdale have qualified for finals and given other results, have a firm grip on third position.

As for the Bloods, they will need to win each of their last three games and Collegians to lose all three for them to play finals.

Onto the first of two games that were played as fixtured this weekend, Old Brighton proved once again why there are the best team going around in the section.

They cruised to the biggest victory of the season, a 133-point demolition of Collegians

From a Lions standpoint, it was always going to be difficult pushing an unbeaten side to their limits. But Brighton are just too classy.

The Tonners stormed out the blocks with an already seemingly unassailable 48-point advantage at quarter time.

The margin only grew and grew, and unfortunately for Collegians, they barely got a look at goal.

Old Brighton held them scoreless throughout the entirety of the game, extending their win strak to 13 games with a 19.19 (133) to 0.0 (0) win.

Lily Tait continued her fantastic season and a hold on second place in the section goal-kicking, as she contributed four majors.

Giselle Buckley, Sienna Courtney, Caterina Obrien and Brigitte Wallace all chimed in with multiple goals as well.

In the other fixture this weekend of Division 1 Women’s it was Marcellin who were a standard above Old Melburnian’s, as the Eagles won by 62 points.

The win keeps Marcellin four games above Parkdale, meaning that they’ve secured a top two finish. Thus, the Qualifying Final is locked to be Old Brighton v Marcellin.

The Eagles had the better of the Omelettes from the offset but couldn’t make the most of their chances going forward with a 1.4 (10) to 0.0 (0) quarter.

Like the Old Brighton and Collegians game, Marcellin managed to keep their opponents scoreless for the duration of the match.

They lead by 10 points, 25, 47 and then 62 at each of breaks in a dominant display.

Among the best for Marcellin were Alana Pane, Tess Menzies and Olivia Zuccala.

Despite a scoreless affair for OM’s, they found some promise in Chare Fraser. Emma Chamberlain and Niesha Happell.

As for next week then, ladder leaders Old Brighton will look to secure first place and that home Qualifying Final when they face Old Haileybury at home.

The OM’s will be playing for their season as they face Collegians away from home, the same said for Collegians as a win for the Lions will secure finals action.

Finally, Parkdale Vultures face the tough matchup of Marcellin at Walter Galt Reserve.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S

Brunswick survive an almighty scare, while relegation-battle ends in a draw

Division 2 Men’s is close, like really close! As we head ever closer to the final month of the home and away season, there are ladder position battles everywhere you look.

Four teams are separated by less than two wins in the relegation battle, whilst second down to sixth are all in the fight to either hold or capture a spot in the four.

The exciting weekend of footy began at Gillon Oval where the bottom placed Aquinas almost pulled off the upset of the season, falling short by 12 points to the ladder leaders Brunswick.

It was clear that the gusty conditions were going to play a major element in this game and that was certainly the case.

With the breeze in the opening term, Brunswick piled on 11 scoring shots to nil, but could only convert on three of those occasions. They lead by 26 points at the first break.

Then it was time for Acquinas to strike back to the scoring end and did so. They added three goals of their own and were more clinical in front of goal.

Headed into half time the men in purple lead 3.9 (27) to the Bloods 3.3 (21).

The ladder leaders lead by 24 points heading into the final term, with the lead perhaps not enough with the breeze.

But given they’ve lost just one game all year, you knew they’d be tough to overcome.

Brunswick were gallant and held on to win 11.13 (79) top 10.7 (67).

Oscar Watt proved to be the difference for Brunswick with four goals, supported by Rowan Hogenbirk with two.

As for the Bloods, Michael Di Donato, Blake Gray and Tom Hogg were among the best.

Unfortunately for Aquinas, the loss and other results means they now sit bottom of the ladder and six points below eighth, the cut off for the relegation zone.\

MHSOB did what they needed to do, in a comfortable 20-point beating of Wattle Park

In the context of their season, this was as simple as must-win for the Unicorns, and they came out with that mentality.

It took them some time to convert, but deep into the opening term Liam Littore slotted the only major of the quarter as the hosts lead by seven points at the first change.

The second quarter was far more even, with the two sides going goal for goal and just kick separated them at the main break.

In the third and ‘premiership quarter’ was when MHSOB made their move.

Matt Robertson kicked all three of his goals for the afternoon in the third quarter, and it gave the Unicorns a handy 16-point buffer into the last.

The Animals looked to make a statement with the first reducing the margin to 10 points, but MHSOB had either ideas, and claimed a 9.13 (67) to 6.11 (47) win.

Sam Hayes, Cam Witt and Sean Lester were all impressive in claiming the four points.

With a remarkable comeback from St Marys Salesian, they stormed from no where to force a draw against Bulleen Templestowe.

With both sides in a relegation battle, the four points were the biggest on offer for these sides all season.

The Bullants began hot, with three of the first four goals of the game.

But St Mary’s Nathan Evans struck late in the opener to draw the margin back to within a goal at quarter time.

The second term was dominated by Bulleen Templestowe as they slotted three goals in quick succession to lead by 25 points.

Another late St Mary’s goal kept them in the contest, 17 points was the half time margin.

The third quarter was almost a spitting image of the second with the Bullants pulling out to a 30-point lead at the final change, and looked set to claimed their fourth win of 2024.

But St Mary’s had other ideas, they kicked four goals in the first eight minutes of the final quarter and in the blink of an eye were within a kick.

The Bullants steadied the ship with one of their own, before two more St Mary’s goals saw them infront late in the game.

Bulleen Templestowe then got back on top and lead by six points in the dying second, before a late dagger from the Saints landed the last blow and stole 2 points.

A compelling result in how the ladder shapes, both sides scoring 11.8 (74).

Saints Hamish Macmillan (four goals), Luke McKay and Bullant Corey Shiels (five goals) were all monstrous in the game.

Game four of the round saw Whitefriars defeat Elsternwick at the Holmes Todd Oval.

Elsternwick with a win would have opened up a 3-game buffer between them and finals, and a subsequent loss meant just one and a half games now separates the Wickers from fifth.

It was a complete and utter coin flip in the first half, with a two point lead for Elsternwick at the first change. Then scores were all level at half time.

On the back of the main break, the Friars just came out hungrier. They kept the Wickers to just two behinds in the third, while asserting themselves with a 23-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Wickers had their chances in the last, but wasteful kicking meant that they were no match for Whitefriars who took the win 10.14 (74) to 7.12 (54).

Wickers’ David Convery, Sean Casey and Flynn Brosnan were impressive, while for the Friars five goals between Christian Feher and Sam Kieseker made all the impact inside 50.

To conclude the weekend of Div 2 Men’s action South Melbourne made the trip to Rathmines Road Reserve to meet Hawthorn and picked up a nice 34-point win on the road.

The Hawks weren’t going to let in early doors. They stayed with their classier opponents for the first half.

The Swans carried a 15-point lead into the main break.

Will Meehan from Hawthorn gave them every opportunity on the day, kicking six Hawks goals.

However, the Swans were too complete and too compelling down the stretch, claiming the four points with a 12.14 (86) to 8.4 (52) win.

The win has the Bloods now outright second place on 36 points, while the Hawks are six points out of the top four in sixth.

Looking ahead to Round 14, the Swans host the Saints at Lindsay Hasset Oval. Whitefriars meet MHSOB in a battle for fourth spot, as Elsternwick face Hawthorn in a big game contextually for the finals.

Aquinas make the trip to Bennettswood Reserve facing Wattle Park, finally Bulleen Templestowe host Brunswick.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN’S

Wet conditions produce mixed results in Div 2 Women’s

Round 13 of Division 2 Women’s was played in wet and wild conditions around Melbourne, serving up a few thrashings and a low scoring thriller.

First up, the Hampton Rovers travelled to Rathmines Road Reserve and recorded a 13 point victory over Hawthorn, keeping their position inside the top two on the ladder as they hope to secure the double chance.

It was an even start with the home side kicking the first goal of the game before the Roves responded. Hawthorn’s lead was extended from a one point lead at the first break to seven points at the main break after they kicked the only goal of the second term.

However in the second half it was all Hampton, as they kicked the only three goals to run out victors on the day. Isla Tucker was the only multiple goal kicker with two and named best for the Rovers, supported well by Lizzie Dingeldei and Natasha Morris. While for Hawthorn, Charlotte Miller, Laura Castleden and Joelly Firmin played well.

Third-placed Power House weren’t challenged, as they dismantled bottom side Old Camberwell by 39 points at Albert Park. The Wellers were held goalless while Power House extended their 18 point half time lead to 39 with three second half goals.

Catherine Bartholomew and Lisa McCombs each kicked two goals for Power House, while Georgia McHolmes took the best on ground honours. They sit one win behind the Rovers in third position, but with a superior percentage with just three rounds remaining. For the Wellers, Alannah Frampton, Isabella Griffin and Madeleine Riddle were named in the best.

It was another thrashing at Kevin Bartlett Reserve, where Richmond Central kept Mazenod scoreless, running out victors by 39 points. It was a blistering first half by the sixth-placed side, booting five goals to set up a match winning lead.

Jordyn Toms-Wedge and Therese Tynan kicked two goals each for Richmond, while Claire Kirwan, Ann-Marie Geary were best afield. For Mazenod, Erin Hopkins, Tiani Wiropuspito and Sarah Gartland played well.

It was a low-scoring thriller at Whitefriars College between Whitefriars and Oakleigh – two teams fighting for a position in the finals. In a game which would produce just one goal, it was the home side who kicked that solitary goal in the opening term.

Disappointingly for the visitors, they would go on to produce twice as many scoring shots (8), but didn’t manage to kick a goal, with Whitefriars managing to hold on by a single point. The result keeps Whitefriars in the top four, one win and percentage ahead of Oakleigh who are in fifth.

Caitlin Ryan kicked the goal for Whitefirars and was named best on ground, while for Oakleigh, Sienna Bernardo, Georgie Nancarrow and Ruby Ford fought hard and were best.

In the final game of the round, it was a lopsided game at the Marles Playing Fields, with top side Glen Eira / Old McKinnon keeping seventh-placed Old Trinity scoreless, winning by 107 points. To Old Trinity’s credit, they were able to field a team this week after forfeiting last round, however still with a number of players missing, were no match for the Gryphons.

Susan Miller

Lily Fitzpatrick stared with six goals while Zoe Rossiter kicked four, as Julia Pavlou was best on ground. For Trinity, Natasha Borash, India Curtain and Kellie Woodhouse battled hard and were named in the best.

As we look ahead to round 14, Oakleigh host Richmond Central at Scammell Reserve in what should be a great game with a finals spot still in sight, Old Camberwell takes on Old Trinity at home with both teams looking for a win, Hampton Rovers play host to Whitefriars in a crucial game at Castlefield Reserve, Mazenod will have it all to do against Power House at Columbia Reserve, and Glen Eira / Old McKinnon take on Hawthorn at home.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

St John’s hand North Brunswick first loss since 2022 in weekend of nail-biters

After 30 wins and one draw, an undefeated streak spanning since 2022, North Brunswick has finally fallen to a determined St John’s outfit. The JOCs had previously lost to the Bulls in Round 2, and their hunger for revenge was evident.

After a tight first quarter, St John’s dominated the second term, scoring five goals whilst restricting the Bulls to one behind. The JOCs defended mercilessly, holding North Brunswick to 1.4 (10) at three-quarter-time. A four-goal flurry in the final quarter was the final factor of the top-ofthe-table clash, St John’s winning comprehensively by 62.

“The boys were really keen to play this game, the vibe was up all week, and we executed our plans well in trying conditions,” St John’s coach Tim Edwards said.

Edwards remains grounded despite the significant victory, as his side holds a firm spot inside the top-five.

“North Brunswick are a terrific team, winning as many as they did in a row is an incredible effort. There’s still a long way to go in this marathon and we look forward to our next challenge.”

Adam Tsardakis was best on for North Brunswick as Simon Woodward slotted two of the Bulls’ three majors.

Michael Carnelley of St John’s kicked his 50th goal for the season, remaining a clear first in Division 3’s goalkicking tally.

Despite trailing until the 13th minute of the final quarter, Canterbury have snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat with a one-point nail-biter against Richmond Central.

The Cobras were held to just two behinds in the opening term, as the Snakes wrestled their way to a 12-point advantage. Canterbury fought their way back in the second, yet still trailed by five points at the main break.

The Cobras kicked the first major of the second half, however a late goal from Richmond Central increased the lead to eight by three-quarter-time. With momentum against them, Canterbury still came out firing in the last quarter. Nicholas and Mitch Szabo nailed a goal each to give the Cobras their first lead, but a quick reply from Richmond Central placed them on the backfoot.

With desperation and high-pressure acts at every contest, Canterbury forced through three behinds to lead by two points late. A behind in the 30th minute to Richmond Central would be the heartbreaking final score of the game, Canterbury completing a miraculous comeback to win 6.11 (47) to 6.10 (46).

Nicholas Szabo and Robert Cox were best on for the Cobras, whilst Nicholas Poole and Cody Brook were nominated for the Snakes. Regardless of the loss, Richmond Central needed to prove they can contend with the top four, and their performance on the weekend demonstrated they’ll be a threat if they qualify in September.

Albert Park has held off a final-quarter surge from Box Hill North in an enthralling win that leaves them just a game and percentage outside the top-five.

A back-and-forth affair, seven lead-changes occurred in an intense first half, but the Falcons trailed after the first two sirens. The Falcons found their groove in the third quarter, scoring 3.4 to the Demons 0.2, soaring to a game-high 16 point lead.

Box Hill North’s belief never wavered though, in a late surge that Albert Park seemingly had no answers for. The Demons kicked three consecutive goals to tie the game at 66-apiece, whilst inaccurate goalkicking cost Albert Park.

The Falcons continued to rue late chances, however the Demons were unable to hit the scoreboard again. Kicking seven behinds without a goal in the final term, the Falcons ultimately held on for a three-point victory.

Blake Williams’ five goals was vital for the Demons, as Joshua Rennie was the key factor for Albert Park.

Although losing at every break, Eley Park have come from behind to stun La Trobe University.

The Sharks started the game on their terms, however inaccuracy in front of goal allowed La Trobe to sneak in front with a point at the quarter-time siren. The second quarter was then La Trobe’s turn to rue missed opportunities, scoring 2.4 to Eley Park’s 1.1.

The Sharks kicked two goals in two minutes to kick off the third quarter’s proceedings, but La Trobe halted

momentum with a spare defender, allowing for uncontested intercept marks to terminate any Shark attack.

An instant centre clearance and mark inside 50 put La Trobe up by 12 in the fourth quarter, yet Eley Park quickly replied with two goals again to tie the game.

La Trobe wrestled the lead back out to seven points, before the Sharks surged once more. Cam Walkinshaw kicked truly from a free kick, as did Zac Hayes 90 seconds later from a contested mark. The match turned scrappy, with the Sharks desperately forcing stoppages as a slippery ball caused illafforded skill errors from La Trobe. In a 33-minute final term, the Sharks held on for their first win since Round 2, prevailing by six points.

“It was a strongly contested match, even throughout, without either team giving an inch,” Eley Park coach Matt Embling said. “The boys will take a lot of confidence into the remaining matches of the season.”

La Trobe’s Archie Conboy, Connor McCredden and James Toomey were defiant in defence, each having their moment as a spare backman. Midfielder Joel Kennedy was deemed best-on for the Sharks.

Swinburne University are just percentage behind from a finals position after outclassing a plucky Chadstone outfit. The Razorbacks led by 38 points at halftime, but the Synners charged in the third-quarter, reducing the margin to just ten points.

Swinburne responded to the challenge however, keeping Chadstone goalless in the final term to prevail by 29. Daniel Marquison earned best-on-ground votes, as Ben Ogilivie snagged two majors for Chadstone. Swinburne’s Riley Aranyos kicked three, joining Bradley Field and Zachary Cooke as best-on.

With the finals race heating up, Round 14 will be an intriguing fixture to watch.

Albert Park host Chadstone in another winnable clash to boost their finals dreams. Swinburne face La Trobe, whilst St John’s and Eley Park do battle. Power House will be smelling blood when they travel to North Brunswick in an enticing top four clash, as Box Hill North host Richmond Central. Canterbury has the bye.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

De La Salle continue late-season charge as Old Scotch leap into top spot

Round 13 in Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition was as much shocking as it was invigorating.

There was a mixture of upsets and triumphs, as ladder positions become all the more important with just five weeks of the home and away season to go.

Opening the weekend was a spectacular upset, the red-hot De La Salle trumping ladder leaders Old Brighton.

A goalless opening quarter, De La Salle proved to be stronger throughout the duration of the contest, running away as 21-point winners.

Team defence was the staple in the win for De La, keeping Old Brighton goalless through the opening three quarters, and limited the talented Tonners side to just two goals come the final siren.

In what was really tough wet and windy conditions at Brighton Beach Oval, De La’s captain Max Miller lead from the front with two of the five goals kicked for the victors.

Ethan MacBeth was also strong in the victory, whilst Conor Omeara and Sam Cross too had impressive outings.

With the shock loss, Old Brighton relinquish top spot on the ladder, a position they have held throughout the entirety of the season. They now sit second on percentage.

While a tough day for all Tonners, Maxwell Langworthy, Jules Lohan and Oscar Newstead shone in the loss.

Later in the day, Uni Blues outlasted Beaumaris to win by 47 points.

Trailing at quarter time and potentially with a second upset of the round brewing, the Blue boys rallied, and dominated after the first change to claim victory.

Johnny Pring proved to be the difference , whilst Max Diffey, Oliver Scalzo and Oliver Williams were also named amongst the best.

Luca Di Lallo and Edmund Wallis capitalised on their chances going forward with two goals each.

As for Beaumaris, two majors for Will Pearson wasn’t enough to register their third win of the season.

The Sharks, now sitting on the bottom of the ladder, will look to pick up some victories in the back end of the season.

A 2pm contest at Basil Reserve would deliver one of the more lopsided score lines of 2024, with Old Xaverians crushing Caulfield Grammarians to win by 152 points.

What could be described as a genuine goal-fest, the Xavier forward unit relishing a mass of opportunity in front of goal.

Vice-captain Tom Scalzo kicked five majors, whilst Charlie Christopher finished the afternoon with six of his own.

The pair were among six multiple goal scorers and an additional five players kicked one for the day.

For Caulfield it was a game to forget. Kade Watkins showed some promise in the belting with two of the three goals for the Fields.

The win gives the Xavs an almighty percentage boost and came crucial in the race for the finals. They now sit just 20 percent behind St Kevins in fourth.

In other games, Old Scotch claimed the four points over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, to capture first position on the ladder.

Trailing for a majority of the day, it was the usual suspects for Scotch who pushed them over the line.

Aiden Brien, Henry Long, Sammy Vidor and Charlie Hume were vital in the come from behind win.

Trailing narrowly at three quarter-time it was a gelled and complete team effort that resulted in a three-goal to one final term and the victory for Old Scotch.

For the Tigers, they remain in the finals race sitting one game and some considerable percentage out of fourth place.

Unfortunately for them, they were imply outplayed in the dying moments, but the side will take great pleasure in matching it with the league’s best.

Lukas Ritter, Liam Napier, Flynn Groves and Finn Chandler were strong in the loss.

The final game of the round would see St Kevin’s power past Williamstown CYMS to win by 44 points.

From the opening bounce this did seem as though it would be St Kevin’s day.

The visitors extended their lead at every interval, and ultimately claimed the four points on a tough day weather wise.

Major goal contributions from Nic Dynan and Zane Greenham who combined for five goals, solidified the four points for the Skobbers.

Looking onwards to next week, an exciting match looms, with Old Brighton looking to get back on the winners list against Beaumaris. The contest will be played under lights on Friday evening.

Old Xavierans will look to consolidate their form against De La Selle, whilst a top of the table clash will take place at TH king oval between Old Scotch and St Kevins.

Williamstown CYMS will take on Uni Blues and Caulfield will play against St Bedes/Mentone.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

50

Gemma Strangio (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon Gryphons)

Congratulations Gemma on reaching 50 games. An absolute dominant force for our Senior Women’s team, the 2024 Captain with the quality left boot has never played a bad game for our club. We look forward to Gemma winning to footy at the bottom of the pack, spinning out of trouble and delivering to the forward line for a few more seasons yet.

Tate Tregea-Copeland (La Trobe University FC)

50

Congratulations to La Trobe’s TATE TREGEA-COPELAND on reaching 50 games – Tata first joined the ‘Trobers in 2019 playing with the Under 19’s and then in the Reserves from 2021. He is a dedicated and hard-working footballer who is constantly looking for ways to improve his game. A constant fixture down back, he is not afraid to sacrifice his own game for the benefit of the team or break a tackle to create forward momentum. Tate also works off-field as the Men’s Football Operations Manager. Well done Tata on your 50 games in the red & black!

Matt Sauro (St Bernards)

100

Best Wishes to ruckman Matt Sauro on his 100th VAFA game this week. A St Bernards Junior, Matt progressed through U/19’s into Reserves footy before making his senior debut in 2021. Since then Matt has developed his game into our Seniors No. 1 ruckman role. Matt capped off a strong 2023 season as a member of our undefeated ’23 Premier B Premiership side and has performed well this season taking on the VAFA’s best big men at Premier level. We look forward to seeing Matt continuing his development and racking up many more at ‘the Pit’ .. well done Matt!

Jesse Maxfield (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon Gryphons)

100

Congratulations to Jesse Maxfield on playing 100 games. A member of the inaugural U19s team in 2017, ‘Moox’ is a born leader of men and drove the standards during season 2023 that resulted in the Division 1 Premiership finding its way into the Packer Park trophy cabinet. The 2024 Vice Captain has left no stone unturned in a break-out season in our clubs quest to become a mainstay in Premier football. We look forward to seeing one of our best ever players dominating at Packer Park years to come.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Josh William (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon Gryphons)

Congratulations to Josh Williams on playing 100 VAFA games. Joining the Gryphons from the Monash Blues, Josh quickly established himself as a popular and important player in our Thirds and an impressive performer at club functions. Always smiling and energetic, we look forward to having Josh around our club for many years in the future.

Jonty Sharman Smith (Ormond)

Jonty joined Ormond in the U/19s in 2015. He made his Senior debut in 2017 and played in the Reserves back-to-back premierships in 2017 and 2018. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond on reaching this milestone.

Sarah Jade Rose (Monash Blues Football Club)

Congratulations to premiership player and ultimate team mate, Sarah Jade Rose on her 100th game for the Monash Blues Football Club. Sarah has been an unwavering member of the women’s senior team since our inaugural year in 2017. Her commitment and consistency are second to none, having missed only three possible senior matches since her debut. Sarah is one of the fittest and strongest players on the team and is prepared to play any position to help her team. She played a pivotal role in the Ashes’ finals assault in 2023, culminating in a senior premiership. From all at the Monash Blues, congratulations Sarah!

Zack Harris (University Blacks)

Zach (Hack) Harris played his 150th game for the Uni Blacks last weekend. Since joining the Under 19s in 2014, Hack has established himself as an ever-reliable stalwart of the club with unrivalled commitment and passion for the Blacks. A hard-nosed contested midfielder-turned-defender with pinpoint skills (provided the skills do not extend beyond 30 metres) Hack has naturally evolved from young blacker (with admittedly veteran-like characteristics) into the wily veteran of the Blacks he was always destined to be. An inspiring role-model both on and off the field for our young squad, we congratulate Hack on reaching the brilliant milestone and look forward to seeing the continuation of Hack’s career at the Blacks.

Please send milestones to media@vafa.com.au by 5pm Tuesday, including a brief description and photo.
