The Amateur Footballer 2023 - Week 15

Page 1

SEASON 2023 - August 5

The VAFA Administration has recently undertaken a project to identify people who have given such distinguished service to our Amateur Clubs or competition, that makes them worthy of having their name associated with a perpetual VAFA award or trophy.

The process began on 8th February this year when the VAFA first put out a portal post to all Clubs which called upon nominations worthy recipients of such an honour. To ensure that all Clubs were given sufficient time to provide nominations and that no deserving person was overlooked, we provided reminders to Club representatives at the Members Meeting on 20th March and we extended this process through to May.

As the Director for Special Projects, Phil Stevens collated and reviewed all applications and compiled a suggested list of the most worthy nominees and the appropriate associated trophies/ awards, which he submitted to the Football Subcommittee for their review and recommendation to the Board for final approval.

Nominations were many and varied, including, long term Club Members/Committee Members/Presidents, volunteers, umpires, and VAFA staff. All of whom have made a significant contribution and are worthy of such recognition. See the list below:

Sue Anderson, Mavis Bastow, Tony Borrack, Tony Boyce, Davina Connors-Calhaem, The Considine Family, Kylie da Fonte, Joan Eddy, Ian ‘Ocka’ England, Max Evans, Val Evans, Felicity Frederico, Norma Fullerton, Leah Gallagher, Peter Grant, Tom Johnston, Jennie Loughnan, Shona MacInnes, Claire Messent, J.A. Miles, Frank Mount, Tim Naughton, Tim Nelson, Rob Pearce, John Robinson, Tim Rossiter, Julie Rossiter, Kevin Segota, Michael Sholly, Robin Smith, Harry Thomas, JA (John) Wilson, Liz Wilson.

The corresponding Premiership Cup name, Best on Ground Medal or Best and Fairest Medal for each of the above successful nominations can be found on the VAFA website.

In the past week, we have sent letters out to the thirty three successful nominees (19 men and 14 women) via their respective Club Presidents / nominating contacts, and the feedback has been overwhelming.

Emailed messages and phone calls from many of the recipients and the families of the deceased nominees being recognised, have been emotionally charged and full of gratitude. There have been many occasions where recipients have shed tears when told of the news, such is the importance that the Amateur competition has played in their lives. Families and friends have shared many stories with the VAFA, reminiscing about the wonderful days shared together along the journey with these men and women.

It is wonderful to recognise our VAFA community people in this way. They commit so much of their lives volunteering their services and making an enormous contribution to the Club and competition which thousands of people enjoy each year.

When the awards and trophies are being presented at the respective Grand Final days or at our annual Awards Night, there will be a proud VAFA person or family representative conducting this service. For the VAFA Community that will be present on those occasions, let’s ensure when the presenters are introduced, that we give them a hearty applause in recognition of their immense contribution to our game.

A weekend to move it on up, or move it on out

The final month of the home and away season is on our doorstep. Round 15 will be known, in my mind anyway, as moving weekend. Even though three weeks remain beyond this one, as far as I’m concerned a top four battle this Saturday will determine finishing orders.

The sides in the middle of the table have one last chance to stay in touch with the top four, and at the bottom end of the ladder, this weekend could seal the fate of the season for two of our clubs. There’s only one place to start, the RSN Xtra2 Match of the Day is shaping up to be the biggest game of the season to date. Second placed, Old Scotch playing host to fourth-placed St Kevin’s I am in the camp of believing the winner of this match will finish second on the ladder and earn the right to a double chance in September. In saying that, the reigning premiers are the one side that won’t be fussed with where they finish, so long as it’s inside the top four. When St Kevin’s make the finals, they formline has them making the Grand Final.

The formline of the last five weeks leaves a question mark over SKOB; win, loss, win, loss, win. The two losses to the University sides. The three wins against Old Xaverians, Old Brighton and Caulfield Grammarians. Last week against the Fields, as convincing as we’ve seen. Shaun Kennedy with seven has a September glint in his eye. Taking a look at the overall squad used in 2023 by St Kevin’s, they’re almost at full-strength. Sam Critchley, Jack Darmody and Nick Sing are the trio that is missing. With the skippers plane touching back down at Melbourne airport this week, he is in line to toss the coin on Saturday. Since the Round 9 encounter with St Kevin’s, the Cardinals formline has been on an indifferent trajectory. Between Round 1-8, Old Scotch were kept below 90 points in a game once. During Round’s 9-12 they were held to scores of 64, 34 and 26.

The last fortnight is looking more like the Scotch we now know them to be. 2023 has been a year of box ticking exercises, beating OM’s for the Australia Cup. Beat Old Xaverians to stop the drought, then beat them again.

It’s been 18 years since the Cardinals tasted success over St Kevin’s; Round 17, 2005. Fittingly enough, the only man left at Old Scotch who was involved on that day; Mark Gnatt. Tick that box and they can’t be ignored as a genuine premiership contender.

Old Scotch final three games: University Blacks (Away), Caulfield Grammarians (Home), Collegians (Away)

St Kevin’s final three games: Old Melburnians (Home), Collegians (Home), Old Haileybury (Home)

The pre-season premiership selection of Old Brighton has come off the rails. From 4-0 to start the year, the Tonners have gone 3-7 from the next 10 matches to sit in the middle of the table.

The final three weeks of the season is favourable to the Tonners, but it might be a case of too little too late in 2023. Injuries have been compounded with travel plans, and amplified by the best players that are in Melbourne, being used in fits and spurts across VFL sides Coburg, Port Melbourne, and Sandringham.

Collegians are 22-2 from their previous 24 home and away matches. The depth of the squad, unmatched. With Dave Mirra out injured,

Ed Greene and Will Pocknee have demanded more of the ball. Three players in the top four on the sharpshooters list come from the Lions. What a luxury for Jared Rivers to have nearly 100 goals come from the triple threat in the forward line.

While nothing is seemingly a cause for concern, perhaps Jared Rivers may be sleeping a little uneasily this week knowing the one side the Lions have struggled to overcome is Brighton. Four of the last five have gone the way of the Tonners, including the Preliminary Final in 2022, and Round 2 at the Trott this year.

A red and blue victory leaves the Tonners with the smallest of pulses in the season. A Collegians win almost assures them of the minor premiership. Despite being two games and significant percentage clear, it’s a must win game for the Lions given the run into September.

You’ll be able to watch this one unfold on KommunityTV from 2:00 PM.

Old Brighton final three games: Caulfield (Away), University Blacks (Home), Old Xaverians (Away)

Collegians final three games: Old Haileybury (Home), St Kevin’s (Away), Old Scotch (Home)

While the Old Xaverians haven’t had much to celebrate in their Centenary season on the field, they head to Elsternwick Park hellbent on not losing a fourth straight game.

They’ve managed to avoid dropping four games in a row each time they’ve been confronted with the unwanted record. Round 1-4, 2018 the last time the red and black mafia went a month of Saturday’s without a win.

Everything that could go wrong at Old Melburnians has gone wrong. A 0-5 start to the year, turned to 4-5 now back to 4-10 on the back of another five game losing streak.

First quarters have been a significant focus (0/14), beyond the opening stanza of a game, scoring overall is an issue, averaging 34.6 points per game between Round 10-14.

While Ben Harding has been an inspired find, and arguably the recruit of the year. He has carried a heavy load through the midfield without the 2022 Woodrow Medallist Gus Borthwick riding shotgun.

Both of these sides sit in the top spots on the most players used for 2023, the inability to be consistent with their selections has been shown through the inconsistent results of the season.

A loss to the Old Xaverians leaves the OM’s sitting in ninth spot with three matches remaining.

If Old Haileybury are to triumph against University Blacks, the hope of remaining in William Buck Premier is all but over.

Old Xaverians final three games: University Blues (Home), Old Haileybury (Away), Old Brighton (Como Park)

Old Melburnians final three games: St Kevin’s (Away), University Blues (Away), Caulfield (Home)

The rematch of the two sides that featured in the Premier B Grand Final in 2022 makes up a significant part of this weekend.

Old Haileybury and University Blacks have combined for 11 wins in their return to William Buck Premier thus far.

It’s been an impressive five weeks with both sides boasting a 4-1 record. While the Xaverians and Melburnians have used over 100 players combined. These sides have called upon 36 and 37 respectively.

Old Haileybury have had the better of University Blacks in recent times. Can they do so again for the fourth straight time this Saturday?

As mentioned above, barring catastrophe, victory for Daniel Ward’s side and a loss to the OM’s will almost secure a spot in William Buck Premier in 2024. It’s a tough few weeks from here for them, so four points this weekend is critical.

Dale Bower won’t care too much for machinations of opposition sides. He’d like to get back on the winners list after last week’s loss to Collegians. And, would like to end this run of dominance the Bloods have over his side.

Blacks can finish this season with an equal or positive win-loss record in the final month, and that would be pleasing to many at the Melbourne Uni given the way they’ve played out the second half of the season.

Old Haileybury final three games: Collegians (Away), Old Xaverians (Home), St Kevin’s (Away)

University Blacks final three games: Old Scotch (Home), Old Brighton (Away), University Blues (Home)

For all the talk about Collegians in first, and the matchup between Old Scotch and St Kevin’s. The University Blues are listening to VAFA Media, and reading this column screaming “don’t forget about us!”

The side is sitting third on the table, and could have entered this weekend in second spot had it not fallen over last weekend. Facing off against a depleted Caulfield Grammarians this weekend, this is the clubs chance to get back on the winners list and to grow the percentage they will desperately need.

109% is healthy. In comparison to the fellow sides in the top four, it’s a long way off. This is one of the key reasons they have to win every game and win them well if they want the double chance. The draw is kind to them but they can’t rely solely on other results to lend them a hand.

Jeremy Goddard and Eddie Ziebarth are still out of the midfield mix. Jack Stephens is still out of the defensive line up. Will Carrington 2-2 in the last month.

The Fields are looking for the finish line in 2023. And, start to regroup ahead of 2024. Guy McKenna is locked in for next season, the 19’s are pushing towards a strong finals campaign. While it’s been a nightmare of a year, there’s been moments throughout that will have fans of Glen Huntly Oval buoyed for the future.

University Blues final three games: Old Xaverians (Away), Old Melburnians (Home), University Blacks (Home)

Caulfield Grammarians final three games: Old Brighton (Home), Old Scotch (Away), Old Melburnians (Away)

This is going to be a season defining weekend. Moving weekend across William Buck Premier. With three weeks to go afterwards, this is the chance to set up your club’s destiny for the year.

One team fails big challenge whilst Coburg edge closer to the top 4

Old Scotch continued their run to be a genuine premiership contender, rolling over the top of Caulfield Grammarians by 53 points on Saturday. Maggie Mahony set the tone for the day, registering four of the Cardinals’ 11 goals.

The tone for the game was set in the first half, kicking 6.7 by halftime in contrast with Grammarians’ seven points. In saying this, the Cardinals’ accuracy was at times worrying, registering six behinds in the second quarter. Luckily, they were able to correct this after half time, kicking only five behinds for the rest of the game.

Lucy Morley and Mietta Kendall were also impressive for Scotch with two goals each, but it was Ella Sciberras who was the best on ground, also finishing with a goal. On a tough day for Caulfield, Ellie Cleland was their best.

Old Scotch will play Coburg next week, whilst Caulfield have the bye to reset.

Kew continued their dominance with a win over Fitzroy, but credit must be given to Fitzroy for keeping it to a 20-point margin. The game was a lot more even than many may have thought in the first quarter, with Kew holding only a two-point lead at half time.

However, Kew turned on the jets in the third quarter, kicking two goals to Fitzroy’s singular behind. Inaccuracy from both sides kept it to a very low scoring game. Zara Flanigan was Fitzroy’s singular goal scorer to be their best, whilst Eleanor Brown also had a goal to be one of Kew’s best.

Fitzroy have a tough challenge at Righetti Oval next Saturday to take on St Kevin’s, whilst Kew will play Melbourne Uni on Sunday afternoon.

Coburg jumped up to fifth spot on the ladder, recovering from a tough loss to St Kevin’s last weekend, with an 11-point victory over West Brunswick

The margin threatened to be a lot bigger, with Coburg kicking 3.9 for the game. West Brunswick were on the front foot for the first half, with it all tied up at half time. It was still close in the third quarter, with Coburg taking a 3-point advantage into the final change.

It came down to the final quarter, where Coburg ultimately came out on top with 1.3 to the Magpies’ one point. Teagan Brett was the clear best on ground, kicking two goals for the Lions. Taylah Watson was the best for West Brunswick.

Coburg will host in-form Old Scotch next round, as West Brunswick travel to face Collegians.

Collegians failed a big test against St Kevin’s on the weekend, losing by 34 points. A strong first quarter, and inaccuracy from St Kevin’s, meant the margin was only five points at the first change, and only a one goal difference at the main break.

However, St Kevin’s ran away with the game in the third quarter, kicking 27 points to Collegians’ solitary behind. Collegians only managed to register one goal for the rest of the game.

Theresa McCafferty and Georgia Harris were Collegians’ only goal scorers for the game, whilst Jenna Colwell was their best. Catherine Stanton had another impressive game with three goals to take her goalkicking tally to 23 for the season. Stanton still leads the competitions goalkicker count.

St Kevin’s will host Fitzroy next weekend, whilst Collegians will host West Brunswick.

Monash Blues win their first game as Finals race heats up

Saturday’s weather was reminiscent of September weather as the charge for finals and specifically that final fourth spot heats up. De La Salle, Old Geelong and St Bedes/Mentone are all contesting a finals opportunity but the main highlight from round 14 came from the bottom of the tables clash.

It was the winless Monash Blues playing AJAX and it proved to be an absolute classic with only one point separating the two sides, in a high scoring affair. It was a close battle right from the very start with the Blues leading at every change before a late surge from Ajax with five final quarter goals to three.

It made things interesting and tested the strength of Monash who were able to just hold on and snatch their first win. A tremendous day for Monash saw the rich form of James Flett continue with three majors while Daniel Easson continued his fantastic year along with Charles Stratford who was voted best for Monash.

Beaumaris were able to put their off-field issues behind them in round 14 to run over the top of the second placed Fitzroy with a 27-point win. It was a must win game for the Sharks who created a one game buffer between them the fourth placed De La Salle as the race for finals begins to get interesting.

With only five points separating the Sharks and the Roys at the final change, the final quarter saw a six-goal blitz from Beaumaris who skipped clear.

Joel Cusack kicked a small bag of four goals with big ruckman Callum Heath instrumental for the Sharks recording another best on ground performance. Meanwhile the Roys were kept in the hunt by Ted Clayton who kicked three.

St Bernards are enjoying sitting at the top of the tree with yet another fantastic win, this time kicking 22 goals to beat St Bedes/Mentone by 37 points. Goal kicking regular Caleb Lewis booted nine goals in a fabulous display also earning a best on ground display for the Tigers.

The Snowdogs, however, look hard to beat, particularly heading into the finals and some familiar names were amongst the best on the weekend. Ben Huggard was their best with two goals with both Luke Said and Dominic Sullivan also kicking three each to assist the charge. The real question is, who can stop the Snowdogs? They have developed into a juggernaut with great appeal and finals can’t come quick enough for them!

Old Geelong have added another win to their 2023 record as they progress their finals chances. Geelong is locked in a battle with De La Salle and St Bedes/ Mentone with all three teams sitting on eight wins with percentage splitting them apart. This match had the makings to be a great contest and it certainly was with numerous lead changes over the course of the afternoon.

De La Salle sprung out of the blocks with the first four goals with leads at every change. Nathan Scollo kicked three goals with Jake Williams who also provided quality service for them. Old Geelong, however, were able to keep De La Salle goalless and storm over the top of them to win by 18 points. Mickey Nicholls increased his goal tally to 27 after adding four goals on the weekend and Harrison Kol found plenty of the footy and was a large contributor.

PREMIER B MEN’S THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 8

The final match of the round saw Old Trinity comfortably account for Williamstown CYMS by 44 points. Trinity trailed at half time by 11 points, but they were able to hold their nerve kicking seven goals in the third quarter.

Trinity’s Dominic Payman was sharp in front of the big sticks with five majors with Boston Dowling kicking three goals. Meanwhile Williamstown’s Zachary Provest booted three goals.

Round 15 will see St Bernards take on Fitzroy in a top of the table clash, with another game that will have potential top four repercussions seeing De La Salle and Beaumaris go head-to-head. Monash will welcome St Bedes/ Mentone to Frearson Oval while Williamstown will meet with Ajax and Old Geelong to play Old Trinity.

Top 4 have their feet on the gas heading into finals

The Old Yarra Cobras continue their rampage in Premier B Women’s with another dominant performance, defeating North Brunswick. With a home ground advantage, the Cobras felt right at home from the outset.

This was inevitably going to be quite the mountain to climb for North Brunswick who unfortunately were not able to register a single score for the match. Celeste Ramnac led from the front in a tough contest to earn herself best on ground for North Brunswick.

The Cobras shared the ball, with 5 different goal scorers, combining for a 67 – 0 victory. Alyssa Bernardo was best on for her side and will be looking to back it up next week when the Cobras take on Mazenod. North Brunswick, still looking for their first 4 points of the season will face St Bedes/Mentone Tigers away.

In the closest match up of the round, between fourth and fifth, Brunswick took on St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. After the first quarter it appeared to be anyone’s game, with St Bedes only 7 points ahead. From that point onwards Brunswick had lost their steam and did not hit the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

The Tigers extended their lead at every break with a dominant 6-goal feat in the second term. Laura Amelung led the charge in front of goals, kicking 5 majors for the day, while Chloe Saulty was best on. Noelene Kingi was the sole goal scorer for Brunswick.

Brunswick will be looking to get back on the winners list in Round 15 as they face Richmond Central, while St Bedes/Mentone host North Brunswick.

Although out of finals contention, Mazenod were looking to finish strong in the backend of their season, and they faced a formidable opponent in Aquinas. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go their way and Aquinas were able to piece together their sixth consecutive win, making them a genuine finals contender.

Mazenod registered their first and only goal in the fourth quarter which came from Kiara Lo Surdo. Charlotte Skinner produced a best on ground performance for her side, with the Mazenod defence doing well to keep the final margin to only 29 points.

Aquinas walked away with the 4 points, however their inaccuracy in front of the big sticks cost them a great percentage, which is something they’ll no doubt be looking to hone in on ahead of finals. Melanie Hogg was best on with a goal of her own for Aquinas. Looking ahead to Round 15, Aquinas take on top-ofthe-table Monash Blues, whilst Mazenod travel to face the Old Yarra Cobras.

The last game of the round saw a complete display of dominance by ladder leaders, Monash Blues, over Richmond Central. With only one loss for the season to the Blues, it was always going to be a tough day at the office for Richmond. However, at not one point did they throw in the towel; a courageous display led by Cindy Hua.

Upsets and resurgence heat up final rounds in Prem C

Round 14 of the Premier C Men’s competition brought about significant shifts in the ladder, setting the stage for an exciting climax to the season. With only four rounds remaining, the competition for top spots and securing a place in the finals has intensified, with promising matchups ahead.

Central Reserve - North witnessed an enthralling contest between Mazenod and Old Ivanhoe, both vying to improve their ladder positions. Mazenod needed a victory to solidify their top-four spot, while Old Ivanhoe sought to make a push for the top two.

With just about five minutes left on the clock, the scores were level, and tension was mounting. Then came a pivotal moment when Old Ivanhoe managed a messy inside 50, with the ball being juggled until it found its way to William Murphy in the pocket. Murphy quickly launched the ball towards goal, and with nobody on the goal line, it dribbled over the line and through the big sticks in an incredible display of skill, putting Old Ivanhoe ahead by a goal.

In a nail-biting finish, Old Ivanhoe managed to hold onto their lead, ascending to second place on the ladder. Their impressive surge up the rankings, especially at this crucial juncture of the season, makes them a formidable force, and they are now a team to be reckoned with in the finals.

Mazenod, on the other hand, will undoubtedly feel the disappointment of letting this critical match slip away. Their loss has pushed them out of the top four, and they now face an even tougher battle to secure a spot in the finals.

Another surprising result with significant ramifications on the ladder occurred as the Parkdale Vultures secured a defining victory over PEGS. The match ebbed and flowed, with Parkdale initially taking a commanding six-goal lead at halftime, only to see PEGS claw their way back and lead by two points at the start of the last quarter.

In a quarter that could potentially shape the rest of the season, Parkdale rallied together and unleashed a scoring blitz, netting six goals to secure a commanding 34-point win. Key players like Ryan Macdermid, who scored five goals, along with Max Phillips and Lloyd Bailey, each contributing three goals, proved instrumental in Parkdale’s impressive performance.

The victory propelled Parkdale back into the top four, offering them control over their destiny as they chase a coveted finals spot. On the other hand, PEGS, who had enjoyed a stint at the top spot in the first half of the season, now find themselves in third place, determined to reclaim their earlier position with them only being half a game behind.

In another unexpected upset, Old Carey’s season took a severe hit with a demoralizing loss to Ormond The match saw Old Carey conceding eight goals in the second quarter to the bottom two team, leaving them virtually no chance of playing finals.

However, the day belonged to Ormond, who celebrated only their second win of the season in emphatic style, with 12 players contributing to the scoreboard. For Ormond, it was a triumphant moment after a challenging year.

Similarly, Marcellin, the other bottom two team, managed to secure a win against the Hampton Rovers, effectively ending the latter’s season as well. In a tightly contested match at Boss James Reserve, Hampton held a slim two-point lead before Josh Posar’s fourth goal of the day sealed the game for Marcellin, who ultimately emerged victorious by four points.

This win takes Marcellin to two wins for the season, while the disappointing loss has made it nearly impossible for Hampton to make it to the finals.

Looking ahead to the next round, Old Camberwell will face the Rovers after their bye, while PEGS will enjoy a week off.

However, the game everyone will be eagerly anticipating is at Chelsworth Park, where Old Ivanhoe will take on Parkdale Vultures. This match is poised to have major ramifications on the ladder, dictating the final rankings. All eyes will be on this high-stakes clash as the excitement intensifies in the Premier C Men’s competition.

Aaron Kinghorn breaks club record

An incredible achievement at Aquinas this week as Aaron “Kinga” Kinghorn breaks the all-time club games record of 317 games currently held by Marcello Tarulli. Kinga joined the Bloods in 2003 and has played every year since for a total of 21 seasons. He has won 4 Reserves B&F awards, a Reserves premiership in 2017, has kicked 306 goals and through it all been the most dependable and loyal teammate you could wish for. He is a very durable and consistent player and most importantly, Kinga is a sensational person, always the first to sit and chat with a new player and make them feel welcome, he is a big part of what makes Aquinas so special. Please join us in congratulating Kinga on his remarkable achievement and make sure the great man feels the love. He will be playing his 318th game at 11:40am at Ferndale Park against St Mary’s Salesian on Saturday and we’re hoping for a big crowd to cheer him on.

To add to the special occasion both clubs even sang happy birthday to the Umpire. Bruce. It was his birthday and he umpired with his daughter in possibly a first father/daughter game. Happy Birthday Bruce.

Therry Penola making a late surge home, while Pirates put Bears season in jeopardy

Kew FC vs Old Peninsula

By far the match of the round as the two teams locked horns at Victoria Park. The Pirates burst out of the gates early, with a fiery onslaught that saw them land five goals in the first term to the Bears one. Williamson and Payze were suburb for the Pirates with 3 goals each to their name.

A wayward Bears clawed back into the game in the second. A fifty-metre penalty to captain Max Waters, who was able to convert a crucial goal, saw the Bears build momentum.

A major to the Bears to start the third gave them a sniff to possibly try to get the job done with plenty to play for. However, after the Pirates put down the accelerator, they never looked back. George Fletcher had 3 handy majors that set the game up and Zach Smith’s return proved to be a good one with a handy goal to go with one of his best games in season 2023. The pirates coming away victors with a handy 25-point margin.

Prahran vs UHS-VU

Prahran are shaping the back end of their season nicely with back-to-back wins that are helping their cause ahead of finals.

It was a very sluggish start, with both teams combining for four behinds in the first term. But it didn’t take long for the Two Blues to take the early ascendency and went on to kick 5 goals in the second. Daniel Campbell a key contributor to that, kicking 3 goals for the day.

UHS-VU never really got going, until a few late fireworks in the form of 5 majors to draw margin back slightly. Will Barnett was all class kicking two majors for UHS.

Mackenzie Mayne played one of his best games securing the best on ground honours being damaging and effective with the ball, and Prahran came home with a dominant 41-point victory.

Therry Penola vs Ivanhoe

Therry are another side that are building nicely at the pointy end of the season and reaping the rewards; four points in the bag and another rise up the ladder.

The game didn’t really get going until the second term, and from that point Therry kept their foot on the throttle. The key forwards impressed on both sides with Cairan Wrigglesworth a highlight for the day booting a handy five majors for the Lions, while Aaron Close was able boot four majors for the Magpies to keep them in the contest.

Therry proving to be too strong in the end, coming away with a comfortable victory that puts them in good stead for finals. Ivanhoe will be looking to regroup ahead of a tough match up next round against ladder leaders Glen Eira.

West Brunswick vs Glen Eira

West Brunswick had their work cut out for them, facing an in-form Glen Eira. They were composed as ever in the first term, led by best on ground for West Brunswick, Jacob Hyslop, with scores level at quarter time.

However, things took a turn in the second, and Glen Eira got the wheels rolling. They were able to extend their lead by a margin of 20 at every break, before piling on another 8 goals in the final term to finish strong with an 87-point win.

Beaumaris break the hearts of Old Haileybury

The weekend kicked off with Old Brighton venturing out to Xavier College where they faced off with Old Xaverians. Old Brighton flexed their muscles with a fourquarter performance, winning each individual quarter, and defeating Old Xaverians by a final margin of 45 points.

Isabella Aikman kicked two of Old Xaverians’ three goals, while Tahryn Mant continued her excellent season of form by being named best for her side.

It was hard to pick a best for Old Brighton with so many players contributing to the win, but the coach could not look beyond India Tait, who has been named in the bests a whopping 13 times this season. Cat O’Brien (2 goals) and Daisy Flockart (3 goals) also backed up their remarkable Round 13 performances, featuring in the top three Tonners players again.

Old Brighton will look to continue their winning ways next week when they travel to Castlefield Reserve to take on Hampton Rovers, while Old Xaverians will face another tough opponent in Marcellin OC.

Old Geelong have dropped out of the top four, after falling short of Old Melburnians by 10 points. While the Old Geelong backline was strong, keeping Old Melburnians scoreless for two of the quarters, the forwards struggled to make a dint on the scoreboard, only kicking two goals for the day.

Sophie Fraser was reliable in front of goals, slotting two majors for the Omelettes, while Sally Peers was their best in her milestone 50 th game. Sophie Joubert and Sophie Batten were best for the Ogettes.

Old Geelong will go to battle with Beaumaris next week in a desperate bid to reclaim their spot in the top four. Meanwhile, Old Melburnians will travel to Old Haileybury for what will be another test for the Omelettes.

Hawthorn AFC came painfully close to causing an upset against Hampton Rovers, in what would have been their first win since Round 1.

The Hawks came out firing in the first quarter, kicking three goals while only letting one through. The Rovers responded in the second and went into the main break trailing by a single point. Hawthorn was again dominant in the third, but not as efficient as they would have hoped, meaning they held a narrow 7-point lead going into the final break.

The Rovers’ coach must have given one of the most inspirational 3 quarter-time speeches of the season because the visiting side appeared to finally switch on in the final term, kicking four straight goals while holding the Hawks scoreless, to break the home side’s hearts by a final margin of 17 points.

Emogen Johnson and Joelly Firmin did all that they could to try to get the Hawks over the line, ending the game with a goal apiece, while Alana Sarec also had a strong performance, contributing three goals. For Hampton Rovers, Kera Galaminda Gellar was named best.

Next week, Hawthorn AFC host Old Camberwell Grammarians, where they will look to make amends for the 74-point loss they sustained when the two sides met back in Round 5. Hampton Rovers will come up against a challenging opponent in second-place Old Brighton.

Marcellin OC have worked their way into the top four with a 25-point win over Old Camberwell Grammarians

Marcellin were superior throughout the game, leading at every break by 9 points, 17 points and 27 points respectively. Old Camberwell Grammarians managed to reduce the margin by 2 points in the final term but were clearly no match for the mighty Sheagles on the day.

In the best for Old Camberwell were Alexandra Herrington, Olivia Honore and Emma Hooper. Marcellin’s best players weren’t available at the time of writing.

Marcellin look likely to maintain their spot in the top four next week when they host Old Xaverians, while Old Camberwell have a good chance of getting back on the winner’s list when they oppose bottom-placed Hawthorn AFC.

The final match of the round saw Old Haileybury travel to Banksia Reserve to take on Beaumaris in a twilight thriller.

The first quarter saw both sides apply elite pressure, with neither side managing to convert a major. Old Haileybury played an exceptional second quarter, allowing them to go into the half time break with a 10-point lead, however, it was another case of the premiership third quarter, in which Beaumaris kicked two unanswered goals to take a 3-point lead into the final term. The Hearts battled hard in the fourth, but the Sharks were able to hold on, surviving the scare by two points.

The loss will have been extra devastating for Old Haileybury as it renders their finals pursuit near impossible, with only two matches remaining of the home and away season. However, the Old Haileybury women should be heartened by the fact that they came closer to defeating Beaumaris than any other club so far this season.

Simone Marinelli showed off her flair in front of goals once again, kicking three goals for Beaumaris, to increase her lead at the top of the goal kicking table. At the time of writing, neither team’s best players were available.

Beaumaris will be keen to keep their undefeated streak going when they host Old Geelong next Saturday, while Old Haileybury will look to upset Old Melburnians.

And then there were five

While there’s still a month of the home and away season left, the top five sides in Division 2 have pulled away from the chasing pack.

Old Yarra Cobras, South Melbourne Districts and Whitefriars are having a battle within a battle for spots third and fourth, although on the back of a brilliant performance from the Cobras on the weekend. Second spot is potentially still open for business.

Taking on the second placed Brunswick, the Old Yarra Cobras got off to a slow start in this contest. After quarter time though they didn’t look back, kicking five goals in the second term to take a 10-point lead into half-time.

The margin grew to 16 at three quarter time before finishing 38-point winners. This puts the Cobras back on the winners list and only half a game behind second spot.

Facing Aquinas this weekend, they’ll be out for the full book of points and cement Aquinas to the bottom spot on the ladder.

Brunswick’s last three weeks has seen them take a stranglehold on the bottom three sides. Bookending the last five weeks has seen them lose to Parkside (first) and now the Cobras (third). They can’t afford another slip-up this weekend against South Melbourne or that double chance position is looking vulnerable.

South Melbourne Districts will enter that Round 15 clash sky-high after holding off a fast-finishing MHSOB by six points.

Leaving the door ajar in the first half, the Bloods went into half-time with a three-point advantage. Not being able to capitalise on scoring opportunities through the third term, the Unicorns were within striking distance in the final quarter.

While Lachie Dowling was kicking goals, the time was running out. In the end, it was the clock that beat the Unicorns who fell short. South Melbourne continued the trend of winning one week, losing the next in consecutive weeks since round eight.

The Unicorns are now two and a half games behind fifth placed Whitefriars. They meet this week, if they are to have any chance of finding themselves in September, they can’t afford to lose a game in the final four weeks.

Whitefriars head into next week’s contest against MHSOB in strong form. Having won three of their last four matches.

This week they were able to account for the Old Paradians with relative ease. Friars were able to hold the green, blue and purple monster to one goal in the first half whilst kicking seven of their own.

The second half is where they put the foot on the throat kicking a further 15 goals to the opposition’s two.

Daniel Wood kicked five, taking his season tally to 56 in the 120-point margin. Wood is now two goals behind Ben Radford (Parkside) in the race for the leading goalkicker. While he is kicking goals, Nicholas Garratt is likely to be leading their best and fairest with another best on ground display.

After a few strong performances in a row, the Old Paradians will have left Whitefriars College disappointed with their output. They return to Garvey Oval this week keen on redemption facing off against Bulleen Templestowe.

Like Whitefriars, Parkside exploded after half-time against Bulleen Templestowe with 11 goals to three to win by 61 points.

Ben Douglas (5 goals) and Ben Radford (4 goals) were dominant in the forward line. The former in a best on ground display.

It was a much stronger showing from Parkside after losing to the Ants earlier on in the year. Since that loss, they haven’t put a foot wrong winning nine games in a row.

Jack Cowell was a shining light for Bulleen with a bag of five goals. They’ll be looking to end a five-game losing streak when they face off against Old Paradians this Saturday. They will need to win if they’re to keep the ever-closing gap from St Mary’s in ninth if they want to remain in Division 2 in 2024.

St Mary’s Salesian, for the second week in a row have come from the ground triumphant in victory.

A strong opening quarter set up the win. By three quarter time they held a 42-point lead over Aquinas with Jack Elliston running rings around the opposition.

This performance means they’re just half a game behind Bulleen-Templestowe. Parkside and South Melbourne await, before they meet the Ants in the game that could determine their future beyond this year.

Daniel McMahon continued his good form of kicking goals in every game he plays, this weekend saw him net a bag of five in a best on ground performance for Aquinas. Next weekend they take on the Old Yarra Cobras.

The race for the finals officially heats up after one side stuns the ladder predictor.

Well, well, well, there’s inevitably one round in football that can shake things up more than most. With one side managing to topple the team above them, it leaves the race for the finals positions all that more interesting.

With four rounds of football remaining, there is no denying that Canterbury and Elsternwick will be featuring in the postseason. However, if we break things down mathematically, there are four sides fighting it out for those final two positions to join them.

Kicking things off for round 14, we saw the top of the table Canterbury Cobras take on La Trobe University away from home in yet another dominant display of team football.

The Cobras have been near unstoppable all season long, and although they suffered from some inaccuracy in front of goal, they did enough to run out 36-point winners against a valiant La Trobe.

La Trobe, although not being contenders for the finals, fought hard behind their season’s best player Iryoung Fan, managing to restrict the Cobras’ scoring enough to avoid a blowout. However, Cobras’ forward Tom Lowden’s bag of four goals has him sitting second for the league after missing multiple games throughout the season.

Next up was Wattle Park taking on Swinburne, with a much-needed percentage boost going the way of the Animals come the day’s end.

Being in a box seat for a finals spot as it stands, the Animals wasted not a moment to make their presence felt at St. James Park, with a 52-point first quarter enough to stamp their authority on the game.

Both Matt Hill and Nathan Bird managed to kick four goals for the Animals, with La Trobe relying on Simon Heathers’ bag of five goals to keep the scoreboard moving.

The next four weeks are going to be integral to the Animals, who have one of the tougher runs home to a finals spot, while Swinburne will look to add hopefully one more win to their season tally come the end of August.

Now, onto the big games of the round, starting with the nail-biter between Elsternwick and Hawthorn.

It was a game of momentum out at Holmes/Todd Oval, with the visiting Hawks getting out to a hot start early, managing to hold an 18-point margin heading into the halftime break.

With the likes of Will Meehan and Justin Raiti with their tails up for the Hawks, much of the work was left to Elsternwick standouts Spencer Hankin and Eli HollandDean to bring back the difference in an old-school shootout.

Still maintaining a lead into the final quarter, the Hawks looked to put Elsternwick to bed. However, a 6-goal to 5 final term for Elsternwick saw the side rise from the ashes in the dying stages to take a famous 7-point victory at home.

The win is a monumental step for a side looking to chase a premiership, while also giving the Hawks enough belief to mix it all the way until the end with one of the most in-form sides in the competition.

To round things out, we have the great upset of the week, with Richmond Central taking on Power House in a battle of the middle of the table but, more importantly, applying that pressure for the fourth and final spot in the finals series.

Playing at the famous Kevin Bartlett Oval, it was Richmond who wasted no time in flexing their dominance, getting out to a handy lead at the half.

ROUND 14 RESULTS

2023 DIVISION 3 MEN’S

GOALS: Richmond Central:

Power House: S. Scotland 2, M. Timmons 2, M. Auchettl 2, H. Officer 1, B. Circosta 1, C. Eliezer 1, N. Harris-Dent 1

BEST: Richmond Central:

Power House: T. Pitts, B. Circosta, M. Auchettl, J. Halloran, L. Stubbs, L. Henderson

In season 2023, we have seen Central start but fade, with the side looking to put a strong Power House outfit out of contention where possible, mitigating the work rate of Tommy Pitts and co.

The second half was close, with Central managing to maintain their lead from the first half to record their biggest win of 2023, now making this race for a finals position all the more interesting.

Realistically looking forward, the game of Wattle Park vs. Power House is the biggest of the round, with Power House just two games out of the four, while a win to Wattle Park could mathematically sew up a final four position, depending on the result of Elsternwick vs. Richmond.

There is plenty at stake for round 15 in Division 3!

Bulls charge on as Falcons and Demons survive scares

The first match of the round saw the still-undefeated North Brunswick take on an undermanned yet on the rise St Johns. The first quarter saw both teams get off to a slow start with St Johns kicking only the 1 goal whilst North Brunswick managed 3, as they took a 17-point lead into the quarter-time break. The second quarter was another battle between both sides however, North Brunswick were able to take the edge. They hit the scoreboard with 2 goals whilst keeping the JOCs goalless, extending their lead out to 31 points at the major break.

In football, as we’ve seen this season, all it takes is one-quarter of football to change the game and the Bulls dominated this quarter. North Brunswick were able to put together a huge 8 goal quarter to take the air out of the game and swing all momentum in their favour, and at the end of the third quarter the Bulls lead stood at 83 points. The final quarter was once again won by the Bulls who kicked 2 goals and kept the JOCs scoreless, for St Johns though, they were able to show that they can halt a team’s momentum, a crucial skill to victory. As the final siren sounded, it was the Bulls that ran out winners in dominant fashion with a 98-point win.

Andrew Ramzy dominated in front of goal for the Bulls with 5 majors, other multiple goal scorers included Marcus Watt (2) and Jake Horwood (2). For the JOC’s, Thomas Tomich was the only player that could find the big sticks with the team’s single goal. In the best for the Bulls was Spencer Zahra, Zac Dicianni and Samuel Watt. In the best for the JOCs were Jarrod Ely, Corey Ely and Dorus Grobler. The Bulls will now face the Demons in what will be their toughest test this season in what should be the match of the round. The JOCs will now face the Falcons who have won their last 2 games.

The second match of the round saw Box Hill North take on Masala in a 2nd vs 3rd battle in a match that wasn’t decided until moments before the final siren. The first quarter saw a stalemate from both teams with a lot of open play and end to end football. Both teams however were able to kick 2 goals but with an extra behind, it was the Demons that held a 1-point lead at quarter time. In the second quarter it was another hard fought and even quarter. The Demons were able to kick 2 majors, but 3 goals from Masala saw the Tigers take a 6-point lead into the major break.

The third quarter saw the Demons claw their way back into the game with fast football, often going end to end. The Demons were able to use their pace to kick 4 goals in the quarter whilst only allowing 2 goals from the Tigers to take the lead back, as they held an 8-point lead with one quarter of football to go. The final quarter was a backand-forth affair until around the 10-minute mark, which saw the Demons use their pace to outwork the Tigers, adding on 3 quick goals in succession. In the end, it was the Demons that won a very exciting and hard-fought game by 23 points, just about securing their spot in the finals in the process.

Multiple goal kickers for the Demons included Jonathan Tommasoni (3), Joshua Chivers (3), Blake Williams (3) and Jack Dullard (2). Multiple goal kickers for the Tigers were Daniel Hoffman (3) and Thomas Williamson (2). In the best for the Demons were Corey Bull, Thomas Rickard and Kyle Hocking. In the best for the Tigers were David Velardo, Karan Singh and Josh Cole. The Demons will now get a finals preview as they face the undefeated Bulls. The Tigers now head back to the drawing board. Having lost their last 4 games, a win is needed against Eley Park if they are to have a chance to contend towards the end of the season.

The final match of the round saw Albert Park take on Eley Park where a win would significantly better both sides. The Falcons followed their winning formula with a dominant start as they kicked 6 goals in the first whilst only allowing a single goal from the Sharks to hold a 32-point lead at quarter time. Eley Park fought their way back into the game in the second with a 4-goal winning quarter to reduce the Falcons lead down to 20 points with a half of football to play.

The third quarter saw both teams fight tooth and nail to gain the upper hand over the other as only 4 goals were kicked for the quarter. However, most importantly, 3 of those goals were kicked by the Falcons as they were able to extend their lead out to 33 points. The final term saw both teams hit the scoreboard with a much more attacking style. The Sharks were able to have a strong final quarter with 4 goals of their own, however 2 goals for the Falcons was enough to secure a hard fought 18-point win over the Sharks.

Kicking multiple goals for the Falcons was Joshua Beets (4), Sam Lee (4) and Christopher Marson (2). Kane Scanlon led the way in front of goal for the Sharks with 5 majors, Tom Johnson also kicked 2 goals for the Sharks. In the best for the Falcons were Sam Lee, Drew Pearman and Alexander Evans. In the best for the Sharks were Joel Kennedy, Kane Scanlon and Zachary Hayes. The Falcons will now look to grow their chances of playing in the finals as they face St Johns. The Sharks will now take confidence from this match into their next clash against Masala.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 36

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Sam Kingston (Ivanhoe AFC)

Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates Thirds defender Sam Kingston on his 50 th game. Sam joined the Hoers as an Under 19 in 2018. When the club later formed a Men’s Thirds team coached by Sam’s dad Steve, Sam became a founding player with many old school mates. Their dedication was rewarded when the Hoers won the Thirds Division 4 premiership on Elsternwick Park last season. Sam was at the forefront of this historic flag, anchoring a strong defensive unit. It was the club’s first flag in the Thirds competition. The team continues to enjoy success in Thirds Division 3 this season. Keep up the good work Sam. You’re the man, big fella!

Mitch Hughes (St Bernards) – 100 Games

Best wishes to our Senior Captain Mitch Hughes on his 100 th Senior game this week. A St Bernards Junior, Mitch won state U19 honours in 2016 after making his senior debut in that season. A member of our 2018 Senior Premiership side Mitch was appointed Senior Captain in 2022 and was named back pocket in St Bernards ‘Team of the Decade’. Mitch’s versatility is a feature of his game. An attacking backman, a creative on baller and his ability to go forward have made him an invaluable part of our senior line up. Well done, Mitch! 150

Fergus McNicol (St Bernards)

Congrats to big ‘Ferg’ on his 150 th VAFA game this week. An Aberfeldie Junior, Fergus moved into U19 footy at ‘the pit’ in 2014. After developing in the Thirds & Ressies, Ferg made his Senior debut in 2018. Post Covid, Ferg mixed Senior and Reserves footy before showing some sparkling form this year in the Seniors in his ruck /key forward roles. Fresh from a short stint overseas we look forward to Ferg adding to his terrific early season form into 2023 and beyond. Well done ‘Ferg’!

Tim Maya (Prahran AFC)

Prahran FC congratulates Tim who played his 200 th senior game on 29 July. Tim has been around the club most of his life starting at State Bank watching his dad play. His own career started in 2007 with Prahran Under 19’s where he was best and fairest in 2007 and 2009. He commenced playing senior football in 2010 and has performed the role of a small forward for most of his career. In season 2011 he was part of the undefeated Prahran Assumption team where he kicked over forty goals for the year including 5 in the second semi-final and 3 in the grand final. In 2017, Tim made his return from back surgery where he was a member of that year’s Senior Premiership team. Recently Tim has moved to the wing where he continues to play some of his best football. Tim is a Life Member of the Prahran Football Club, a member of the PFC Team of the Decade (2010-19), a great clubman, is very active on the social front after leading the social committee for many years, and very much part of the Prahran Football Club family. Well done, Margie!

Williamstown cause an upset in a tight race for finals

Round 14 was another great showing by the VAFA’s young elite. St Kevin’s posted an impressive victory which keeps them two wins clear of the pack. SBMT now sit third and have arguably been the dark horse of U19 Premier division in 2023. Old Scotch, University Blues, Williamstown, and Old Brighton sit at the bottom half of the ladder, each possessing 6 wins thus far.

Old Brighton def by. St Kevin’s by 5 points.

St Kevin’s asserted their dominance in what was arguably the match of the round. Despite a slow start at Brighton Beach Oval, they were able to clench a clutch victory. SKOB delivered a 5-goal last quarter which propelled them over the line. Though Old Brighton’s performance across the first three quarters was outstanding.

J. Campigil continued his stellar form for Old Brighton, booting 3 majors in a comprehensive individual performance. He is a name to watch across the next 12 months.

St. Kevins’ composure is becoming more evident as the season progresses. They have talented players across every line who refuse to walk away with a loss. Though they’ll be disappointed at how they started this game, they still walk away from round 13 as premiership favourites. The ever-consistent group of R. Fernandes, H. Trotter, J. Palmer, S. Duffy, H. Kirkwood & B. Bryan propelled SKOB to their 11th win of the year.

Old Brighton will face Williamstown in Round 13, while St Kevin’s will host Caulfield at home.

Caulfield Grammarians def. De La Salle by 39 points.

Caulfield may have slightly snuck under the radar in 2023. With 7 wins and a healthy percentage, they look primed for a finals berth in 2023. De La only sits one spot behind the Grammarians but have struggled to find consistency in this dense section.

Caulfield started hot, sitting at 40 points by quarter time. They were able to maintain a strong lead and cruise home in the final 3 quarters. De La Salle’s defensive unit were no match for the trio of T. Warner, C. Hankin & A. Loughnan, who combined for 13 majors. This remains one of Caulfield’s most dominant performances of the season.

De La Salle struggled to counter the dominance of Caulfield’s bigger bodies down forward for the duration of the contest. They also only posted one behind in the opening quarter and entered the first break down by 39 points. This poor start may be difference between them playing finals in a month’s time. They now sit in fifth. M. Wain, M. Higginbotham, L. Lyngberg, J. Torey-Toth, A. Liakakos & T. Martin were all strong in a losing side.

ROUND 14 TIPS

Old Brighton v Williamstown CYMS

Old Xaveriansv Old Scotch

St Bedes/Mentone Tigersv St Bernards

St Kevinsv Caulfield Grammarians

University Bluesv De La Salle

Caulfield look ahead to St Kevin’s, which will be a good test and De La will face University Blues.

Old Scotch def. St Bernards by 75 points.

Scotch have given themselves a nice percentage boost on the eve of finals. They were able to assertively defeat St Bernards at Camberwell Sports Ground on Saturday.

St Bernards posted an impressive opening half, remaining on the tail of Old Scotch. Unfortunately, they ran out of gas in the second half and fell short by 75 points. D. Gilham kicked an impressive 3 goals.

Scotch sparked up in the second half and showed why they’re on the cusp of a finals berth in 2023. They slotted 11 second half majors and kept the opposition to a scoreless fourth term. They have an important month ahead. A. Ryan, J. Rendelmann, T. Basile, D. Gilham, L. Gibson & J. Maddox dominated for the home side.

St Bernards will play SBMT under lights at Brindisi Street on Friday. Scotch will clash with Old Xavierans.

University Blues def by. St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 3 points.

St Bedes have secured another impressive win in their pursuit of a 2023 finals berth. A come from behind effort in the 4th quarter has allowed them to jump to 3rd position on the ladder. Uni will be disappointed to have missed this win on their home deck. They have slipped to 7th

J. Ryder was a standout for SBMT. The hardworking bull has put in a consistent season which has included a debut for St Bedes/Mentone’s senior side.

Uni’s A. Dowsley slotted 4 in a comprehensive performance for the forward pillar. He now sits 4th overall in the section’s goalkicking award.

St Bedes will look to tick the box against St Bernards on Friday evening, while the University Blues will clash with De La at home. Williamstown CYMS def. Old Xaverians by 15 points.

This irrefutably important victory for Williamstown will aid their descent up the ladder as the season draws a close. They utilised their home deck to a tee off against the reigning premiers. Xavier remains 2nd on the ladder but a loss like this may dent their confidence on the eve of finals.

The skill efficiency and football IQ of Williamstown’s A. Williams, S. Elford, N. Sayers, F. Lodge & A. Martinez was on full display in this famous victory. A. Fernandes built upon his brilliant form and slotted one major.

Xavs will consolidate and put this performance behind them. They have real ambition in achieving back-to-back premierships and have had a great season thus far. T. Bourne, N. Pozzi, S. Noonan, N. Honeyman & D. Calvert were admirable in a losing effort.

Old Xavier will reload against Old Scotch this weekend, as Williamstown faces Old Brighton.
