From VAFA players, to Big V Champions and Legends After three long years, this week marks the return of the traditional ‘Big V’ luncheon at the RACV City Club, where those who represented the Amateurs will gather to celebrate their past glories and honour some select individuals.
It is a special occasion for our VAFA players to wear the Big V and compete against the best players across the country. Representative football was last played in 2019 but it will be high on our radar to re-establish as part of our future Strategic plan. We are very much looking forward to seeing the Big V running around again.
This is the first time the luncheon has been held since 2019, and one where family, friends, and teammates will recognize the amazing contribution made by the following three committed individuals:
Congratulations to the most recent captain of the Big V men’s senior side Josh Freezer (Old Melburnians) played his 150th senior game last weekend. This weekend, captain of Old Trinity, Ed Weatherson reaches his 150th senior game. The Weatherson name is synonymous with the T’s, his grandfather John is a founder & the inaugural captain of the club. There’s something romantic about having a Grandfather, Father and son all become household names at the football club.
Two Big V inductees will have their achievements recognised: Rick Pisarski (Old Melburnians) Rick played 10 games with the Big V between 1977 – 1982 and was renowned as a cool and reliable defender under pressure with a strong mark. A reliable full-back week-in, week-out who enjoyed the after match just as much as the on field battles with the full forwards. Rick was recognized with selection as the All-Australian Amateur full-back. Tim Sutcliffe (Umpire)

It is a special occasion for our VAFA players to wear the Big V and compete against the best players across the country.
This weekend marks the final round of the home and away season for the Premier section of the Women’s competition. Premier B to Division 3 moves into the weekend that is widely regarded as ‘the toughest match to win’ Preliminary Final weekend. Tickets are available via the VAFA website or on sale at the gate to gain access to those venues.
Tim joined the VAFA in 1992 and umpired 360 games before retiring at the end of 2011. He umpired a total of eleven grand finals six of those in Premier A : 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
Tim umpired 14 Representative matches including touring Ireland with the All Australian Amateur team in 2008. He was twice named Umpire of the Year in 2003 and 2007, and was recognized with VAFAUA Life Membership in 2009.
While at Waverley Oval on Sunday, we will crown the first of our 2022 VAFA Premiers. 1,050 days since we last had any form of a VAFA Grand Final. St Kevins and West Brunswick in Women’s Premier Thirds will compete for the cup.
And we’re elevating a Big V Champion to a Big V Legend: Bruno Conti (North Old Boys)
West Brunswick comes into the game having beaten Melbourne Uni in the semi-final to book their spot. These sides opened the season by playing off in a draw. They’ve been evenly matched all year and this game is likely to go down to the wire again.
Bruno played 16 representative games (1986, 89, 90, 91, 93, 93, 94). He received the best player award for Victoria v South Australia in 1990 and was named as an All-Australian in both 1989 and 1991. Bruno also served as a Big V Selector for 13 games over 9 years with the 1998 C-D4 team and from 1999-2006 with the senior team.
As always, I hope everyone continues to Enjoy the Footy!

Mount a case yourselves and tell me I’m wrong? Hurley-Wellington and Dan Coffield having to support Josh Freezer across the last lines. Dave Mirra and Ed Greene have kicked 51 goals between them.
As we move into the last month of the William Buck Premier home and away season. It’s not at all silly to suggest that it feels like September is already. And, instead of it being a top four finalist, it’s literally a top ten, with every game this weekend having ramifications to the ladder.
If Sandringham don’t recall Sam Dunell this weekend, he could hold the key that unlocks the door for the OM’s as they push to cement top two honours. On their home-track, where the finals are played, it could come down to the wire and hopefully a precursor to September.
Will Old Trinity leave University Blues red-faced this weekend? Old Trinity have already claimed the University Blues scalp in 2022. Holding them out by 5 points at the Daley Oval in Round 4. Alex Polidoris made that day his very own. This weekend, it’s a celebration for club legend, and club captain, Ed Weatherson. He plays game 150. He has ridden every high, every low, every bump since making his senior debut in 2011.
Can St Bernard’s spoil Old Brighton look at a top two finish? Speaking of top-two honours. Old Brighton are equal with Old Melburnians in third. The percentage gap of 11% is the only separating KPI. The Tonners got back on the winners list last week.
He is part of the fabric of the T’s and his contribution should be duly recognized and acknowledged. If the milestone man isn’t enough of an incentive for Old Trinity, then consider this, the T’s have been languishing at the bottom rungs of the ladder since 2019. In the final round of that season, right up until three quarter time, they were headed to Premier B before storming over the top of De La Salle to send them packing.
The Brighton Beach Oval fortress is a touch on the wobbly side in 2022, having lost their past two matches there (Old Xaverians by 52 points, Collegians by 28 points), with their most recent win (St Kevins by 3 points) coming in round 8. St Bernard’s relishes the challenge of facing Old Brighton, it gets hot under the collar, not just around the sherrin, but quite often a few verbal exchanges between the boys of Essendon and the boys of Brighton.
This Saturday, it is a genuine chance to bridge the gap between themselves in eighth, and Uni Blues in ninth. A win puts them 2-games clear of relegation. A loss, and they will fall to ninth spot with three games remaining.
They will want to be on from the start Old Brighton. We will know before the bounce whether Hamish Dick (North VFL), Darby Hipwell (Sandringham VFL) will stay with the Tonners. Tom Fisher played through the reserves on the weekend, and is this the week Hutch calls on Lochie Filipovic?
In spite of all this, Blues are rewriting their own script for 2022. It hasn’t gone to plan in the slightest, but they’re rolling with the punches. They can’t afford to allow the T’s a fast start and spend the remaining three quarters chasing their tails.
Charlie Vague, Mitch and Chris Hughes, Ben Overman will all be running on top of the ground if they sense victory. If the young pups get a sniff and come away with the win. It tightens up that relegation discussion even further.
The green and gold have been dominating in England in the early phases of the Commonwealth Games, why can’t the green and gold head to Melbourne Uni and dominate there?
This becomes a classic game of a team who well and truly can’t make the finals, but can certainly have a say in shaping the finals.
How do Collegians make it seven in a row?
Why can’t Caulfield beat Old Xaverians for a second time this year?
Collegians, extraordinarily, since they last played Old Melburnians haven’t suffered another loss. Six wins in a row. They are statistically the #1 side since the conclusion of Round 8. That particular Friday night under the lights was not kind to them as OM’s did what they pleased.
Caulfield Grammarians are playing almost/nearly footy in 2022. They’re almost getting four quarters together. They’re nearly challenging the best for the full game. One of the times it has been a complete performance, was against Old Xaverians in round 4.
This time around, all roads lead to Elsternwick Park for the RSN Carnival Match of the Day. For starters, they’ll have a recognised ruckman to go up against Nick De Steiger. Old Melburnians have had to rejig their defence with George THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Similarly, it all came together for them against Old Xaverians in round 5 of 2021. So there’s no reason it can’t all come 2
together for them again to make it three wins from the last four encounters against the red and black mafia.
ROUND 14 RESULTS
Apart from a couple of undisciplined 50m penalties, the Fields served it up to OM’s for a majority of the afternoon. Declan Reilly was enormous in the ruck. The midfield brigade of Will Edwards, Dane Crognale, Jack Wallace went to work. If Oliver Lowe maintains a Caulfield jumper this week and not a Sandringham jumper, it’s going to be a battle of the small forwards with him at one end, and Jack Hewett buzzing around the other.
2022 WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S
Old Xaverians have had moments of ‘what if’ right throughout the season. Three games they’ve lost by under a goal. Last week against Collegians, another one of those moments. It was the first time in his VAFA career, Xavier Richards was held goalless. I can’t see that happening again this Saturday at Toorak Park.

Xav’s have the opportunity to get back in the top four, should results go their way. James Byrne won’t have any interest in games around him. He is a “control what we can control” operator. He has control of making sure his 22 men are focused, ready, and primed to not let the Fields walk away winners for a second time this season. Are Scotch capable of beating the St Kevin’s press? Drones. 18-man press. Cluster. Pressure. Harass. Suffocate. That’s the terminology that is being pushed at T H King oval to the boys of St Kevins. They are the tightest defensive unit that has been seen in William Buck Premier, in over a decade. The club is conceding a mere 51 points per game. On the flipside, they’re ranked #2 for points for, averaging 79.3. (Old Xaverians #1 - 83.4). It’s as well rounded as you can get a team with 50% of the side each week, under the age of 22. 90% of the side are St Kevin’s students who’ve come to play under the guidance of club legend Plugger Lynch. Their opponents this weekend, Old Scotch. St Kevin’s are on record as saying they were and have been envious of Old Xaverians success, and wanting to emulate that. From where I sit, Old Scotch may be the most likely profiled team to be the next ones to emulate what St Kevin’s are doing. Ranked #3 for attack in 2022. 75% of their team are under the age of 22. The one area at the moment that hurts the Cardinals is the high volume of scores that go against them. Maybe that will be a target of recruitment for them in the off-season. They do have VFL listed Doug Lawrence at full-back which will help. The unique ground of T H King helps the ladder leaders. A win keeps that one-game buffer at the top of the ladder. Old Scotch, can’t move from sixth spot. Swing for the fences boys, it’s a free hit this weekend.

Have finals nerves crept into round 14? firing on all cylinders, providing essential momentum for the Jackers at every stoppage. Uni Blacks were quick to respond, as Harrie Lahy and Henry Bennett worked tirelessly to grapple the lead. Charles Hamilton and Toby Lipton were determined to keep the Uni Blacks from running away with the game as the Blackers headed into the final quarter ahead by 1 point. As the game came to a close it was the might of forwards James Sansom and Hugh Curnow that got the Uni Blacks over the line by 23 points. Uni Blacks face Williamstown next week. With CY hot off a close battle, they will need to start off strong to keep them at bay. There is no denying that AJAX are knocking on the door of finals, sitting one victory outside the final four. The Jackers will have their eyes closely on Old Haileybury and Fitzroy, hoping the four handy points thanks to the bye round can launch them into a top spot.
With only a few more rounds left the pressure was certainly on around the grounds. The hotly contested footy made for some interesting score lines in round 14. The Sharks showed their teeth, defeating Williamston by 70 points meanwhile, Uni Blacks overcame AJAX by 23 points. In a final quarter dash, Fitzroy won their arm wrestle against St Bedes Mentone Tigers by a solitary point and Old Haileybury were too strong for Old Carey, overpowering the Panthers by 131 points. Williamstown headed to Banksia Reserve, unable to hold onto their lead against Beaumaris. A scrappy first quarter saw the Sharks scoreless and Williamstown up by two points. An uncharacteristic opening term from the Sharks, unable to take clean possession of the ball. Despite hard work from Nathan Bazzani and James Taylor, CY remained in the lead as Harrison Carter and Thomas Johnstone’s strength and composure allowed them to capitalise in their forward half. After a half-time regroup, Beaumaris got to work, clawing back a 19-point deficit. Sam Gibbins rose to the occasion with two crucial goals as did Oscar Mcmaster and his 1. From there, the Sharks saw no signs of wavering, returning to play their hard-contested brand of footy. The Sharks stretched their lead to a further 70 points, taking home another win for the season. Next week Beaumaris are up against Old Carey at the Carey Sports Complex, meanwhile, Williamstown will be challenged by the Uni Blacks. Having come close to Beauy this week, can Williamstown continue this pressure against the Blackers?
A heated battle took place at Brunswick Street Oval with Fitzroy defeating St Bedes Mentone Tigers by 1 point. With their finals hopes on the line, the Tigers came out swinging, securing themselves a 12-point lead at the halftime break. Michael Barnes’ hunger for the ball coupled with forward line pressure from Christopher Mangoni saw St Bedes have the momentum of the game. Jack Wotherspoon’s determination for the ball and handy goal kept the Roys in the match. SBMT’s intensity continued into the third term as Thomas Tyquin and Nick Grech demanded the ball through the middle. Hard work from Ted Clayton and Nathan Ligris allowed the Roys to wrestle back the score line, with Fitzroy ahead by 1 point. In the end, the brick wall defence Rhys Seakins and Jock Green locked down the Roy’s backline, keeping SBMT from sealing the victory. This victory has a major impact on the leader board, with the Roys retaining 4th position
Despite exceptional pressure from AJAX, the Uni Blacks secured themselves yet another win. AJAX started well early, hitting the lead by 8 points in the first quarter. Jordan Cohen and Nicholas Lewis were

on the ladder and keeping The Tigers out of the finals race. The challenge for Fitzroy is not over just yet as they are up against De La Salle in round 15, fresh off their break. Having defeated Old Haileybury by 4 points in round 5, can The Tigers go 2 from 2 next week? Old Haileybury recorded a huge 131-point win over Old Carey at Princes Park. Old Carey remained competitive in the first quarter, chasing Old Haileybury by 20 points. Jonathan Marsh worked hard to win the ball around the ground as did Luca Anderson, providing vital pressure at stoppages. Old Haileybury brought the backline pressure in the second term, keeping The Panthers scoreless and extending their margin to 74 points. Lachlan Riley played a pivotal role on ball. Jack Lonie, Jack Mchale and Durras Seccull had no trouble hitting targets, recording 6 goals each. The second half saw Old Carey increase their score by 19 points but, in a similar fashion, Old Haileybury answered swiftly. With a final score of 26.14-170 to 6.3-39, this game is a crucial percentage booster for the Bloods, with spots in the finals still up for grabs. In round 15 Old Haileybury are up against St Bedes Mentone Tigers, looking to settle the score as for Old Carey, they face the front runners in Beaumaris.

The top two clear out as the finals race tightens Monash Blues and Hampton Rovers have solidified their positions at the top end of the ladder, while results in round seventeen have opened the other finals positions right up.
Billy Robertson and Nick Darling two each. Only Nick Morwood with two kicked more than one goal for Old Geelong, while Beau Harris was his side’s best on the day.
Old Ivanhoe know that they cannot afford any unexpected slip-ups in their run into the big end-ofseason games, and they were determined not to drop this one. Marcellin put together a decent run of midseason form but came into this match having lost four games on the bounce, and they were immediately under pressure at Chelsworth Park scoring a solitary point against three goals in the opening quarter.
Old Mentonians needed a win here to continue their charge towards finals, but Ormond spoiled their party at EE Gunn Reserve. The Monders began like steam trains, kicking six goals to two with the first term breeze advantage, but they conceded the only four goals of the second quarter as the Panthers restricted the half-time deficit to just four points. With all to play for the sides went goal-for-goal early in the third quarter but Ormond finished the quarter well to lead by two goals turning for home.
Things got no better for the Eagles and a 47-point three-quarter time lead just about finished this as a contest. Marcellin showed commendable spirit to win the last quarter by a goal, but it was too little too late. Luke Scuderi kicked three goals while Sam Wilcox and Michael Mitris contributed two each to the Old Ivanhoe cause. Caleb Barry and Lachlan Rush kicked two goals each for Marcellin, with Ry Elphinstone strong.
Ormond took their chances in the final stanza better than Old Mentonians could to run out victorious by 13 points and prove that they are not finished as finals contenders themselves just yet. Zac Benson and Joseph Nowell kicked three goals each for Ormond, with the consistent Dae Szydlik again their best. In-form forwards Darcy Brown and Tom Morecroft also kicked three each for Old Mentonians, with Austin Parker strong for them on the day.
Old Geelong hosted Monash looking to make a statement, but the Blues were never troubled in this encounter. Having conceded the only five goals of the first quarter Old Geelong knew that they needed to hit back immediately if they were to stay in the contest, but they were only able to kick two goals to Monash’s four as the half-time margin blew out to 50 points.
Parkdale took on an in-form UHS-VU needing the four points to stay in touch with the top five, and the University boys certainly gave them the fright of their lives. They dominated territory in the first quarter but squandered that advantage by kicking 1.6. Parkdale stayed with UHS-VU in a good old-fashioned slog with only two goals kicked by each side in the first half, but began to assert its ascendancy in the third term to take an 11-point lead into the last break.
Monash were able to coast to the finish line from there, but with Geelong missing their leading goal kicker and their prime movers well held by Monash, they could only kick four goals for the day in a crushing defeat. Nick Argento kicked three goals for Monash, and

The game was really broken open in the final quarter, with Parkdale kicking the only seven goals to score a 56-point win that belied the closeness of the match for most of the day. Matt Emmanouil, Liam Purcell and Jai Elcock kicked two goals each for Parkdale with Lloyd Bailey their best. Pat Brookes was excellent for UHS-VU, for whom James Gilfillan registered two majors. Preston gave the high-flying Hampton Rovers one heck of a scare at Ruthven Reserve, before Hampton kicked the only four goals of the last quarter to secure the victory. The Bullants took advantage of a flat start from a Rovers side missing some key players and suffering early injury blows. Six goals to one in the first quarter was indicative of their dominance, but it woke the Rovers up to the point that they only gave up one more goal for the entire match. The key to the result was the third term, where they kicked two goals to one into what was a very strong breeze. This drew Hampton level at the last change and set them up for their final charge to secure the four points. Lachlan Carrigan, Danny Corp and Max Coughlin kicked two goals each for Hampton Rovers, but Chris Perkins in his first game back for seven weeks was easily best on ground. Conor Howard kicked three goals for the gallant Bullants, for whom Oscar Howard and Sotiri Rerakis were best.

Kallan Dawson It’s been a whirlwind for Kallan Dawson. The Williamstown CY’s product was playing in Premier B in 2021. 6 weeks ago he was recruited by North Melbourne with pick 2 in the mid-season draft. Over the weekend he made his AFL debut for the Kangaroos against the Bombers.

Billy Drake - 13 goals Ivanhoe Amateurs forward Billy Drake was the toast of the club after scoring 13 goals against Power House in Round 15 at Ivanhoe Park. Drake is one of two Ivanhoe players rookie-listed at Collingwood VFL this season. He is currently second on the D2 sharpshooters list with 48 goals, just eight behind his playing coach Ash Close on 56. His 13-goal haul was the equal second-highest for a senior player in Ivanhoe’s 112-year history. The race is now on to see who will win the club’s Ron Smith Medal; named after the man who kicked a record 15 goals against Bentleigh in B grade in 1936. Smith also had two hauls of 13 goals in 1934 and 1936. Former Hoers captain Mitch Lovell bagged 13 against Elsternwick in D2 in Round 16, 2015.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Emily Condon (SKOB Saints) The VAFA congratulates Emily Condon on being nominated the Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star this week. Emily was amongst the best for the SKOB Saints in their Round 15 victory over West Brunswick that locked them away with top spot for the William Buck Premier Women’s season. What the club said: Emily came down to the SKOB Saints straight out of school and followed her friends into the backline of the Women’s Thirds for season 2021. Emily capped off a great opening season by winning the Best & Fairest award for the Thirds. 2021 was her first year of football, having previously been an accomplished netballer, playing at rep level which she continues to do so today. Having completed a full pre-season in 2022, Emily started the year in the SKOB Saints Reserves and soon rose to the Premier grade side, holding down an important half back role that suited her perfectly. An uncanny ability to read the play, Emily can be relied upon to intercept mark and drive the ball forward with gusto, chase down tackle and mark cleanly, making her a valuable member of a very accomplished backline that is miserly on opposition attacks. The VAFA Rising Star nomination is an amazing achievement for a player in her second year of football, and clearly Emily is a player to keep an eye on as she develops her game even further. From all at SKOBFC, we congratulate Emily on this accolade and wish her many more years of enjoyment and success with the SKOB Saints.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Lachlan Riley (Old Haileybury) The VAFA congratulates Lachlan Riley from Old Haileybury who has been nominated as the weekends Rising Star. Lachie kicked a goal and was named best afield as Old Haileybury defeated Old Carey over the weekend. What the club said: Everyone at Old Haileybury is excited that Lachie Riley’s immense talent has been recognised with a Rising Star nomination after a Best on Ground performance against Old Carey on the weekend. Like so many of his age, COVID-19 played havoc with his draft year whilst injury further interrupted his attempts at being drafted at AFL level. Whilst Lachie is quietly spoken, he has been extremely dedicated and driven in his endeavours to be the best footballer he can be. Lachie is agile, athletic and is an extremely graceful player when on the field, but he backs all that up with great decision making, kicking skills and a fierce attack on the footy. This year Lachie was picked up by Frankston VFL where he play’s with his brother Connor. He has also played 8 games this year with Old Haileybury where he has been a fantastic contributor in our midfield group. Lachie is studying Engineering and Commerce at Monash University after a great education at Haileybury College. We look forward to watching Lachlan’s career in the coming years and fully congratulate him on this award as it is well deserved. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The only way is up for the Wellers Meanwhile Old Camberwell stood their ground in fourth spot with a 41-point win over Oakleigh. Despite a goalless first quarter from Camberwell, they rebounded back in the second quarter by kicking six goals. It was a gallant effort from Aaron Cloke for Kew as he booted home four goals, taking his year total to 62 goals. Old Camberwell will this week go head-to-head with Whitefriars in a battle that will mean everything in terms of a finals spot.
A windy Melbourne day on Saturday saw the race for finals in Division one continue to stay tight. Close games were the order of the day as well as some huge thumping’s which again makes the bottom end of the ladder all the more interesting. Ladder leaders PEGS showed their class on the weekend with a huge 110-point win against Whitefriars. With 12 individual goal kickers it was PEGS who again showed they’ll be hard to beat come finals time. Leading the charge was Riley Simmons who kicked three goals and was named one of the best. Simmons continues his strong form this season bringing his total goals this year to 28 from his 10 games. This weekend will see Whitefriars take on Old Camberwell in their fight to stay out of the bottom two. Currently Whitefriars sit on equal points with Old Peninsula but have edged up to 8th on percentage.
Therry Penola can expect to live a little easier now knowing that they are now two games clear of both Whitefriars and Old Peninsula in a battle to stay out of 9th. Old Peninsula stayed in control during the first half with a 15-point lead at half time. However, the tides turned in the fourth quarter with Therry Penola coming from behind to win. Support from Jackson Young and then Finn Dolan along with Kane O’Halloran with two goals each gave Therry Penola a nine-point win. Round 16 will see St Mary’s Salesian up against Therry Penola in what could potentially see them register their 6th win of the season.
Round 15 saw Prahran Assumption finishing as big winners against St Mary’s Salesian. Matthew Clifford was exceptional as he blasted nine goals alongside teammate Tony Mirabella who registered eight goals. Prahran Assumption ended with eight individual goal scorers and 24 goals for the match as they stick with Old Camberwell in their fight for fourth spot. This weekend, however, will see their biggest challenge yet as they go battle with PEGS to fight for finals. It promises to be a crucial game for Prahran Assumption, but will they be able to bring their best against the standout team of the competition?

The final game of round 15 in division one proved to be a classic. Packer Park was host to Glen Eira and Kew. Second up against third was always going to be the game of the round and it didn’t let us down. Kew restricted Glen Eira to just one goal in the opening quarter with the margin at quarter time bloating out to 25 points. However, the Gryphons wrestled back some momentum in the second and third quarters. Willem Van Denderen was dominant for Glen Eira and had assistance from Sean Bass who kicked four goals. Meanwhile Kew’s Matt Sharkey was busy up forward with three goals and Andrew Mathieson chipped in with a best on ground performance. In the end, only two points split Glen Eira and Kew with the Gryphons taking the win. It means they are just one win away from an opportunity to move to second. Glen Eira will this weekend face Old Peninsula with a spot for top two up for the taking while Old Peninsula will have their focus on battling relegation. Round 16 will also see Kew host its clash with Oakleigh for the final game of the weekend on Saturday.

Is this weekend a precursor to September? Bulleen Templestowe had a second quarter to remember against Old Paradians, with a 5-goal blitz to go in at half-time in front by five points. Unfortunately, the only five goals that came after half-time went the way of the Green, Blue and Purple to win by 27 points.
A weekend in Division Two where there weren’t too many surprises, clubs followed the script but that doesn’t mean it’s simply a foregone conclusion with 3 home and away rounds remaining. Ivanhoe AFC are locked in for finals and will finish first, with a top of the table clash coming up this Saturday against West Brunswick it’s going to be a precursor (potentially) to what we may see in the first semi-final this year.
Like Wilson at Brunswick, Anthony Cafari (3) has kicked goals in every game he’s played this season and been the number one focal point for the Paradians. He’s got a great sidekick in Luke Brock (2) offering the one-two punch to opposition defence.
West Brunswick can lose a double chance if they lose this week with Brunswick and Old Paradians snapping at their heels. And, behind them, MHSOB are still in the mix.
Max Tieman was named the best player for the Ants, while the goal kicking machine Anthony Lucisano was held to just a solitary goal in the tough conditions. The Parade train rolls onto Ross Gregory Oval this weekend to face Power House. A win this weekend could snuff out the chances of the Unicorns’ hopes of playing finals.
So, while the weekend went as predicted. It’s all unknown beyond that. Brunswick stayed in touch with the top two after a hard fought win over Yarra Old Grammarians. Two points was the margin that separated the sides at quarter time, all square at half-time before the Bushrangers held a 1-point lead at the final change.
MHSOB still have a pulse in the season after coming from behind to win against Aquinas at Aquinas College. Trailing at the final change by 16 points, the home side were held scoreless against the wind and the Unicorns slammed home four goals to leave with the four points.
Holding Yarra scoreless, Brunswick were able to pull away with four final quarter goals to come away winners by 28 points in a game where the margin didn’t reflect the level of pressure that the Bushrangers brought to the contest.
Without power forward Ashan Wijayakumara, Larry Hanly (5) was the man who stepped up to fill the breach, supported by Chris Tetaz (2). Aquinas’ Matt Aver (3) always knows where the goals are as does Billy O’Loughlin (2) who moved to 24 goals for the season.
Thomas Wilson (3) is having a stellar season in front of goal. He’s hit the scoreboard in every game he’s played this year, with 38 his tally to this point. Aidan Pollock’s last month has been superb for the Wickers.
While the chances of playing finals have slipped away from Aquinas in recent weeks, they have the opportunity to finish the season on a very high note playing three sides sitting below them. And, that might be the springboard they need to take winning momentum and formulas into 2023.
Matt Young fought valiantly for the Bushrangers, kicking a goal and being named their best for the day. This weekend they face Bulleen Templestowe with an eye to get back on the winners list, and leapfrog the Ants to move up to 7th spot on the ladder.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Manningham Cobras had the game taken away from them very early on in the piece against West Brunswick. Held to just three behinds in the first half as the Magpies opened up a 51 point lead.

Perhaps the most pleasing thing for the Cobras was the performance of Frances Joseph who has now rolled out five consecutive best player finishes for the club. From a West Brunswick point of view, it’s a box they had to tick. And the coaching staff may well love the fact that from 18 goals kicked, 12 individual goalscorers. They have the biggest challenge in Division 2 this weekend, the ladder leaders Ivanhoe AFC. To be able to not have a heavy reliance on one forward may prove to be their one wood in this contest. Ivanhoe AFC were enormous after quarter time. Power House went toe-to-toe with the benchmark for the first 30 minutes of the contest. Billy Drake slammed home a staggering 13 goals, while coach of the side Ash Close added another three to his name. The only slip up from here will be if the players start thinking too far ahead of the next four quarters. But with Ash Close, Wayne Schultz, Scott Selwood leading the charge, they wouldn’t be thinking beyond the next day. While Round 15 may have gone to script with not too many surprises. Round 16 is sure to throw up some curveballs. Which team is going to be most likely to throw a cat amongst the pigeons?

Wins aplenty for those at the top There are three games left of Division 3 Men’s, and the cream is still rising to the top, if the cream is the top three on the ladder right now as South Melbourne Districts, Canterbury and Elsternwick continue to assert their dominance.
William Meehan (4), Justin Raiti (3), Luke Piccolo (2), and Charlie Lee (2) were their goalkickers, and Cameron Allum took top honours. Elsternwick have continued their winning ways, downing Richmond Central by 45 points in Holmes Todd Oval. The Snakes were competitive all day but a six-goal first term to the Wickers set the scene to ultimately keep their noses in front. Missing opportunities in front of goal was the order for the day unfortunately for Richmond Central. Daniel Marchese (5), Nicholas Materia (2), Nicholas Lowrie (2), and Jacob McGaw (2) were Elsternwick’s multiplegoalkickers, with the former justifiably taking top honours. For the away side, Jack Bilson kicked two, and Dane Roy (1) was their best player.
The coveted fourth spot continues to allude many of our teams with a couple of them appearing to hit their straps at this late stage of the year. A rather competitive Westbourne Grammarians side went down to North Brunswick at Allard Park by 44 points. Never really in it but never really out of it, the Warriors stood up tall, despite being down by 41 points going into the main break, before limiting their opponents to just three goals for the rest of the match. The Bulls were never without opportunity though, with a total of 28 scoring shots, and eleven of those, goals. For the home side, Joseph Flynn (5) and Jake Horwood (3) were the stars in the forward line, with the latter taking top honours. Justin Porter (2), Brett Connors (2), and Jordan Doyle kicked the only goals for the Westbourne Grammarians, but it was Nguyen Dang who was best on ground.
South Melbourne Districts have escaped what would have been a bitter loss, after leaving Bennettswood Reserve 13-point winners against Emmaus St Leo’s. It was mostly an Animals day all game, kicking five goals in the first term before going into the main break 17 points up, and limiting their opponents to just three goals for the half. A 19-point buffer at the beginning of the final quarter didn’t deter the Bloods though, who piled on five goals to zero to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Matt Hill (2) and Jonathan Greensides (2) were the only multiple-goalkickers for Emmaus St Leo’s, but stalwart backman Joden Crothers (1) got on the board in his 100th game for the club. Hugh Schaeche (1) was best on. For the winning side, Oliver Dufficy kicked five and Jason Clifford two, with the latter taking top honours.
Seven individual goalkickers have seen Canterbury share the load beat Hawthorn by 33 points at Canterbury Sportsground. The first half was arm wrestle despite the Cobras holding onto the lead for all of it, with the Hawks giving themselves every opportunity to get the win to be only down by 16 points at the main break. Nine goals to seven in the second half ended up being the difference. Thomas Lowden (4), James Boarotto (3), Jordan Dear (3), Troy Smith (2), and Nicky McMahon (2) were Canterbury’s best in front of goal, but it was Michael Topp (1) back to his best-on-ground ways. For the losing side,

Emmaus St Leo’s head to Kevin Bartlett Reserve to take on Richmond Central. Both teams lost in round fifteen and will no doubt be thinking of this game as an incredible opportunity to get back on the winner’s list. Parkside return from their bye and take on a thriving South Melbourne Districts at Lindsay Hassett Oval. After a scare in their last game, the Bloods will want to win well against a side arguably peaking at the right time. Rathmines Road Reserve is the destination for North Brunswick, who will travel away to face Hawthorn. The Hawks are another side hitting their straps and it will make for interesting viewing. The Westbourne Grammarians face a tough ask as they welcome Elsternwick to Westbourne Grammar. A valiant effort in their last game will set up the Warriors to hopefully continue that. Canterbury have their second bye of the year, and go into it in really good form.

A win for the ages for Box Hill North Round 15’s matches featured the competitive balance we’ve all been striving for. This round was one to be excited about as battles within battles take place and a genuine fight for fourth between Albert Park and Masala.
La Trobe and Swinburne went toe-to-toe in a top of the table clash. Similar to the first reviewed game, both teams got off to a slow start, however, Swinburne was able to start off the better over the Trobers and take an 8-point lead into quarter time. The second quarter saw La Trobe swing the momentum in their favour kicking three goals whilst keeping the Razorbacks goalless and taking a 13-point lead into the major break.
Albert Park and Masala faced off in what was a genuine must-win game. Both teams started off slowly but fairly even as the Falcons took a narrow 8-point lead into the quarter-time break. The second quarter saw Masala capitalising on kicking with the wind as they managed to kick three goals to one and take a 5-point lead into the major break.
The Razorbacks started to make a slight comeback adding on an extra goal over the Trobers as they were able to decrease La Trobe’s lead from 13 to seven setting the scene for a competitive final quarter. La Trobe dominated the final quarter having 10 scoring shots to 0, however, the Trobers were unable to capitalise on these opportunities kicking 1 goal and 9 behinds. However, most importantly, La Trobe was able to secure the 4 points, taking them a win clear on the top of the ladder.
The second half saw Albert Park come back into the game through a high-scoring third quarter which saw the Falcons kick four goals, despite kicking three goals themselves the Tigers lost their lead and went into the final break down by 2 points. Kicking against the wind in the final quarter, the Falcons got off to a much-needed quick start to lead by 12 points. Masala started to make a late charge with multiple scoring opportunities however they were unable to capitalise and turn the momentum, going down by 10-points.
The best players for La Trobe were Harrison Tanner, Samuel Benetti-Baker and Ben Vicary. The best players for the Razorbacks included Zachary Cooke, Zachary Lassey and Nicholas Coad. La Trobe’s goalscorers included Riley Alexander (2), Joseph De Angelis (2), Charlie Scanlon (1), Riley Keath (1) and Joshua Rogerson (1). The goalscorers for the Razorbacks were Tyson Wiegold (2), Zachary Cooke (1), Harrison Bernado (1) and Bradley Field (1).
Sam Lee, Alexander Evans and Reece French-Lightfoot were amongst the best for the Falcons. The best for Masala included Dale Gibb, Anthony Dorrington and Matthew Decarne. Albert Parks’ goal contributors included Jack Lee (4), Sam Lee (3), James Bordin (1), Brett Tottenham (1) and Jack Amies (1). Masala’s goalkickers were Declan Fowler (5), Tom Williamson (1), Brandon Kelly (1) and Noah Scott (1).
La Trobe will now make the trip to Albert Park to take on the Falcons who will need to win to have a good chance at making the finals. Swinburne will also take on a formidable opponent in the currently secondplaced St John’s.
Albert Park will take winning form into their next battle against a dominant La Trobe outfit. Masala will look to regroup as they face an Eley Park side that has struggled in 2022 but a side that has a win over the Tigers. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The Demons were then able to dominate the second quarter kicking an unanswered five goals and extending their lead out to 45 points.

Momentum was on their side as the Dees added on another two goals to extend their lead out to 65 points with 25 minutes left of football to be played. In the end, it was the Demons who after their incredible first half were able to hold off the Sharks and leave with a 66-point win, their first win of the season.

Eley Park’s only goal kicker for the day was Tyler Johnston who slotted 2 majors. Joshua Best was a star for the Demons slotting 7 goals with other contributors including Jamie Marro (1), Cameron Liston (1) and Thomas Cheslett (1). Eley Park will make the trip to North Dandenong where they will take on Masala, a side that they beat earlier in the year but a side that has improved since. Box Hill will have the bye in round 16 before they return to take on La Trobe in the second last round. St Johns who had the bye will now host Swinburne in what will be a big game for the JOCs as they look to secure the double-chance.

Connor is one of the Gryphon’s burgeoning Wagga contingent who arrived in 2018 to be an integral part of our 2018 Senior Premiership team. ‘Rads’ is a hard-working, deceptively tough defender. We look forward to watching him streak out of the backline and precisely hit targets up the ground for many years to come at Packer Park.
Nick Geary (Ivanhoe AFC)
50
Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates defender Nick Geary on his 50 th club game in Round 15 (July 31). “Gears” is a former Under 19 who has developed into a first-class senior footballer in recent years, playing mainly in defence. A quiet achiever, Nick’s courage is exemplary and he backs his judgment to good effect at each and every contest. Whether that’s plucking an intercept mark, spoiling opponents, applying maximum pressure or rebounding out of the back half, Nick can be counted on to get the job done. His disposals are a joy to behold too. Well done Gears - keep your motor running.
Reilly Connell (Ivanhoe AFC)
50
Ivanhoe congratulates Reilly Connell on his 50th club game in Round 15 (July 31). “Bong” was a member of our Under 19s team that reached the grand final in 2015. One of his great claims to fame was a miraculous last-gasp goal in the dying seconds of a close match at Ivanhoe on May 16, 2015. His running roost from centre wing was wind-assisted and bounced at least three times before going through on the siren. His kick was captured on video, which was sent to Channel 9 as an entry in Almost Footy Legends. Reilly has been enjoying a return to footy as a ressies stalwart over the past two seasons and still gets his fair share of the ball. He is also one of the club’s much loved characters. Goodonya Bong!

One round to go… How good is footy With the finals spots on the ladder still not set in stone, a win against Marcellin would be vital for Caulfield Grammarians to take hold of third spot with one game left in the regular season. Marcellin who are down the bottom of the ladder have had some close games this season against most of the teams at the top of the ladder and it would take a top performance from Caulfield to get the job done.
After the half time break, the game began to settle and Old Xaverians were able to keep Melbourne Uni quiet throughout the quarter. They limited the impact that Melbourne Uni were having in attack and kept the goal tally from Melbourne Uni to just one goal for the quarter. A reward for all the hard work came for Old Xaverians when they scored their first goal of the game. After taking control of the game in the third quarter, it looked like momentum was swinging to Old Xaverains. If Melbourne Uni dominated the first quarter, then Old Xaverians made the final quarter theirs. They were first at the ball and showing a hunger that was lacking in the earlier parts of the game. The effort saw them limit Melbourne Uni to just one point for the whole quarter. The late attack would let Old Xaverians down though as they only scored one goal for the quarter despite having six shots on goal, which was not enough to get the win.
Marcellin were strong in defence early on in the match, holding pace with Caulfield in all areas across the ground. In what was a clear winter day both teams struggled to get clean possession of the ball and wrestled for possession for much of the first quarter. As the game went on Marcellin continued to heap the pressure onto Caulfield, cutting the ball off in the middle of the ground and limiting their damage on the scoreboard. A great piece of play down the ground got the first goal of the game late in the second quarter for Caulfield, which took them into halftime with all the momentum. The third quarter was a physical affair where both teams were taking every opportunity to pounce on the loose ball and capitalise on the other’s mistakes. This quarter it would be Marcellin who overcame the pressure to get a goal on the board and tighten up the game to be within one point at the final break. No team was able to get ahead of the other in the final term and the arm wrestle continued throughout the quarter. Caulfield made their way inside fifty more, but only managed to get four points on the board. Marcellin would only manage one point and would fall short by just four points.
The match between Kew and St Marys got off to a slow start, the normally quick firing Kew were held back by St Marys by their effort in defence to slow down the play and try to keep Kew away from goals. The strong defence worked for St Marys as the normally high scoring Kew were limited to just one goal in the first term. The second quarter followed the same flow with St Marys continuing their swarming defence and restricting the ball movement for Kew. It was a slow style of play that was keeping St Marys in control of the pace of the game. Kew made some smart passages of play where they found the holes in the St Marys defence and were rewarded with goals. The third quarter was a struggle for both teams, with the play being scattered across the ground, neither team was able to control the play and get a chain of momentum going. In the final term Kew came out running and showed some of their best possession work for the game. Controlling the ball from the middle of the ground and running straight out of the centre, there was nothing that St Marys could do to stop them. Kew completely took control of the game in the last quarter, it resulted in ten scoring shots that translated to four goals. It saw Kew come away with a 46 point win after only leading by two goals at the last break.
It was the second of the must win games of the weekend and this time it was Melbourne Uni who needed to get themselves a win against Old Xaverians. Melbourne Uni came out with a bang, showing strength in attack and adding three goals to their tally in the first quarter to get themselves off to a great start. Continuing the impressive display in the second quarter Melbourne Uni kept a high level of defensive pressure on Old Xaverians keeping them away from the goals enough to keep them scoreless for the first half. Melbourne Uni kicked away with another three goals for the quarter, taking a strong lead to the main break. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

St Kevins started the game against West Brunswick off in spectacular style with a goal straight out of the middle. Both teams were running the ball hard and playing a fast paced style of football and before long West Brunswick had their own reply goal. The pace continued for the rest of the quarter, with both teams wasting no time to move on the ball when they had possession. There was plenty of space between the teams, but this didn’t stop turnovers with both teams struggling to find their own players when moving the ball on quickly.

West Brunswick were showing strong signs in their defence, providing strong tackles throughout the second term and really pressuring the St Kevins attack. The effort from West Brunswick didn’t wane, but St Kevins showed their best efforts to find their way through the defence and score three goals. West Brunswick continued to impress in the third quarter, running hard and pushing the defence of St Kevins with their fast ball movement. The St Kevins defence did not waiver under all the pressure, picking off kicks and stopping the ball from making it into the West Brunswick forward line. The final term saw St Kevins come out and take over the game, their usual style of ball movement was back and they shut West Brunswick out of the game.

St Kevins controlled the game for the last term, keeping the ball out of the hands of West Brunswick. It was a tough quarter for West Brunswick who had kept pace with the ladder leaders until this point, but St Kevins had upped their pace and were showing their best football to West Brunswick. The final margin was a win to St Kevins by 37 points, it was a gallant game from West Brunswick but the result showed the strength the St Kevins has on offer.
