SEASON 2024 - AUGUST 10
Let the finals begin!
As the proud sports nation, many of us have been tuned into the Paris Olympics and cheered on our Aussies pursuit of Gold, silver and bronze.
Now we turn our attention to the first of VAFA finals commencing this weekend for teams in the six Men’s Thirds competitions, as they each chase new Club Silverware in:
Premier Thirds
Thirds Division 1
Thirds Division 2 North
Thirds Division 2 South
Thirds Division 3 North
Thirds Division 3 South
The Men’s Thirds competition was historically termed the ‘Clubbies’ (Club XVII) or the ‘Warriors’ to reflect the often more mature weekend warriors who took to the field to enjoy having a kick with mates, but having committed less time to the pre-season campaign and regular training nights than those who were eager to represent the Club in Seniors and Reserves.
Jason ReddickCEO
The Thirds competition has also enabled Old Mentonians to rise like a phoenix from the ashes after going into recess in 2023, having previously played in Premier C in 2022.
Thirds finals matches to be hard fought and enjoyed in the right Amateur spirit.
Nevertheless, the Thirds players were always seen as a reflection of a strong Club, a loyal band of players, a great source of support for Club operations and events, and often the source of the unheralded player that could progress through the ranks to be a quality senior footballer.
Whilst that traditional stereotype still exists in many of our ‘Thirds’ teams, there are a number of variations to the teams that contest in this competition.
For some teams, the Thirds Competition is an avenue to operate at a competitive level as they look to re-establish their Club’s footprint.
Masala FC, for example, after a challenging 2023 season, in 2024, they entered a senior team in Thirds Division 2 North and have qualified for the finals in fourth place, edging out Marcellin by just 0.74%. This is only the second time in their Club’s 12-year VAFA history that Masala will have a team contest in the VAFA finals.
This year the newly branded Mentone Panthers have entered a team in Thirds Division 2 Men’s South and sit proudly atop the ladder and enter the finals as favourite to take out their club’s second flag in its 50+ year history.
Regardless of the results, the efforts of the respective committees and Presidents (Billy Bolch at Masala and John Thompson at Mentone), need to be applauded for having achieved such great on field results to date and we trust they enjoy watching their teams in the finals campaign.
Old Xaverians have four teams entered across Premier, Division 1, Division 2 North and Division 3 North and have topped the ladder in each of those competitions.
Whilst the ‘Xavs’ are always strong in the Thirds competition, their teams have different make ups.
Their Premier Thirds team and Thirds Division 1 team are made up of mostly u23 players, whilst the more experienced ‘Crocs’ players take the field in the Thirds Division 2 North and Thirds Division 3 North.
As reigning champions in Premier Thirds, Thirds Division 1 and Thirds Division 2 from 2023, Xavs are again the yardstick that their rivals will need to overcome to secure these flags in 2024.
Mazenod, the Thirds Division 5 premiers in 2023, have also had a terrific season again. The ‘Nodders’ have dropped just one match in finishing on top of Thirds Division 3 South this year and will be looking to secure back-to-back Cups in 2024.
As always, we wish everyone well, and look forward to seeing all the Thirds finals matches to be hard fought and enjoyed in the right Amateur spirit.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
Tonners toppled as Top 4 tightens in William Buck Premier Men’s
Old Scotch confirmed their premiership credentials with an imposing win over pace-setters Old Brighton at Camberwell Sportsground.
It was another slow start for the Cardinals, who trailed by 20 points at quarter time before responding with a 5-goal second term to close within 3 points at the half.
The Cards found multiple avenues to goal in the third term, booting 4 to 2 to lead by a kick at the final change.
They seized control with the first 3 goals of the final term to post an eye-catching 25-point victory that sets up another blockbuster against St Kevin’s this Saturday.
Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “Brighton got the jump on us early and it was great to see our boys respond and we felt we were well in the game at quarter-time. From there it was a real arm wrestle and the physicality was a highlight.
“Will Clark was brilliant for 4-quarters and gave our mids first use, which was pivotal. Dougie Lawrence led strongly all day and with the midfield bulls of Jelbart, Easton, Lipscombe and Franetic - our leaders really stood up.
“Then with the youth and energy of Badr, Allen, Thomson and Beckworth to name a few, it was a good old fashioned team effort. There is strong belief in this group.”
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Great game of footy, clean and quick and physical. We were pretty slick through the first quarter, defended well and could score effectively.
“Scotch got control at stoppages and got clean ball to the outside where their forwards were really dangerous. They defended our entries well and limited potential scoring opportunities.
“Lots to review and learn from.”
Reigning premiers Collegians dug deep to secure a vital win over St Bernard’s.
The Lions failed to finish their work early, trailing 1.5 to 2.2 at the first change, with multiple lead changes through the second term before the Snowdogs grabbed 5-point half-time lead.
The home team had the better of the third term - 6 scoring shots to 3 handing them a 13-point lead at the last break.
The Lions found another gear to boot 3 goals in 6.5 minutes to hit the front midway through the final term. The Snowdogs responded to tie the game up before Collegians added another 3 goals in time-on to score a critical 17-point win & celebrate premiership half-back Luke McCleary’s 100th game in style.
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “A really hard-fought spirited win. St Bernard’s are always hard to beat at the Snake Pit, and for
the 2nd and 3rd quarters, they were the better side. They were able to get on top of the clearance and contested battle.
“Our last quarter was terrific. The boys wrestled back the momentum around the contest, and we were able to utilise our speed with some quick ball movement.”
Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “Great finish by Jordie McKenzie’s men after a real arm wrestle for the first 3 quarters. We had a real thirst for the contest and unfortunately, which has been the case on a number of occasions this season, we haven’t been able to finish off our solid work.”
The jostling to avoid relegation continued at Melbourne University Oval as University Blacks got the better of Old Melburnians Blacks entered on a 5-game losing streak but settled nicely, kicking the first 3 goals to lead by 11 points at quarter time.
2 goals apiece in the second term saw the margin hover around the teens – the hosts by 13 at the half.
OMs responded with 2 goals in 2 minutes early in the third term to close within a point as the game tightened for the next 20 minutes before Blacks booted 2 goals in time-on to kick back out to a 13-point lead.
But OMs weren’t done yet and slotted the opening two goals of the last quarter to surge back and it was a 3-point game entering time-on before Matthew Grocott’s fifth goal settled Blacks. They’d add two more to ultimately post a 4-goal win that elevates them over OMs by half-a-game with 4 to play.
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We were back to our competitive high-pressure best. We executed the game we wanted. The boys brought great effort for 4 quarters. A massive challenge still lays ahead, we will embrace the challenge and give it everything we have in the remaining 4 games.”
Paul Satterley (OMs): “Full credit to Blacks who applied pressure all day and their tackling & one-percenter efforts were at a premium.
“Our lads were super brave and despite being 3 players down by half-time still rallied to stay in the game right to the end.”
Old Xaverians sent a message to their fellow contenders with a 99-point demolition of University Blues at Toorak Park.
Xavs rocketed out of the blocks with 11 scores to 2 to lead by 29 points at the opening change.
Then an incredible 9-goal second term from the hosts saw them lead by 86 points at the main break as the statisticians reached for their record books.
Credit to the Blues, who regrouped and broke even with 2 goals apiece in the third quarter before Xavs added 4 goals to 2 in the last to finish off a percentage-boosting 99-point win.
That percentage boost could prove critical, given Xavs now effectively hold a 2-game advantage over Collegians in the race for fourth spot.
Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “The first half couldn’t have gone much better for us. We managed to control the territory, get our hands on the footy first and give our forwards plenty of looks to convert.
“Obviously super pleased for my boys to get another important W locked away and play the way that we did. We had a very even contribution from each line.”
Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “The most dominant half of footy I can remember watching - unfortunately we were on the receiving end of it.
“We knew it would be tough given the experience on the sidelines for us at the moment, but that was absolutely dominant. We obviously allowed it to happen but that was really impressive from Xavs - their midfield was really humming on Saturday.
“A better second half from us, however, far too little and way too late.”
The final match saw St Kevin’s extend their lead at every change against Fitzroy at Brunswick Street.
SKOB booted 2 goals in the opening 5 minutes before the Roys settled to break even for the rest of the term.
The hosts reduced the margin to 9 points early in the second quarter before the visitors kicked away to a 6-goal lead.
The third term tightened – St Kevin’s adding 3 goals to 1 to lead by 41 at the last change before a withering burst delivered 6 goals in 13.5 minutes to blow the final margin out to 73 points.
Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “I was really pleased with the way our boys performed over the 4 quarters. We tried to remain focused on our job and I thought it was a really professional display.
“We defended as a connected team and I thought we tested them with our offence. We are at our best when it’s an even team contribution and that’s what it was again this week.”
Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “It was a great test for us against a side that’s gearing up for finals footy. We competed well but were our own worst enemy and turned the ball over too often in dangerous spots.
“We have played three of the top four sides in the past three weeks which has given us plenty of opportunities for learning and improvement. We are looking forward to the run home and finishing the season strongly.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
Finals race heading for a photo finish
With only four rounds remaining in the William Buck Premier competition, there still looks to be more twists and turns to come. St Kevin’s and Old Scotch perch atop the ladder with only one loss between them, while Monash Blues sit at the bottom with just one win for the year. In the middle, Kew, Caulfield Grammarians, Collegians and West Brunswick remain in contention for the next two spots in the finals, while Coburg, Old Yarra Cobras and Melbourne University must still battle it out to avoid relegation.
As the finals race heats up, Caulfield Grammarians were hoping to maintain their position in the top four as they hosted Melbourne University in the early game to kick off the round. With Collegians starting strong favourites against Coburg later in the day, Caulfield knew that the pressure was on.
Caulfield started the game in red-hot form, piling on five majors in the first term, including the first three of the day. By half-time, the lead had stretched out to 32 points, the home side relentless in their pursuit of victory. Melbourne University were more competitive in the second half, with Madison Katerelos contributing strongly with two goals, but Caulfield were still able to record a strong 78-29 win. Olivia Rundle was once again a star, booting three goals in just her eighth game of senior football, while Matilda Mottram was named best on.
For Melbourne University, Tahlia Meier was recognised as the best player in her first game of the season for the Mugars, returning after playing the full season for VFLW premiers North Melbourne.
Collegians hosted Coburg in what was a demolition job by the home side, finishing with a thumping 65-point win.
Although quarter-by-quarter stats were not provided following the game, Ebony Angelopoulos and Zara Klein were standouts with four goals each, while young gun Krystal Russell continued her good form following her Round 12 Rising Star nomination, named in the bests again. Maddi Shaw was the crème of the crop, rewarded for her immense tackling pressure
For Coburg, Sarah Jolly kicked their only goal of the day while Adela Michelson was named the Lions’ best player following a strong defensive performance.
At McAlister Oval, West Brunswick caused the greatest upset of the season to date, toppling Kew by 14 points.
It was a tightly contested first term, with just two points separating the two sides going into the main break, however, the Magpies owned the ball in the third term, extending their buffer out to 11 points by the end of the quarter.
West Brunswick appeared hungrier for the win, starting the fourth quarter with dominance and earning a gamehigh 33-point lead with 11 minutes left on the clock, before Kew slotted the last two majors of the game in junk time to bring the deficit back to a more respectable 14 points.
Kew certainly felt the absence of key midfielders, Dakota Villiva and the Harding sisters, and will need other players to step up in their absence next time if they wish to get back on the winners’ list. On a positive note, Eva Cafolla and Lucy Aitken were immense in defence, and Gabriella Rawlings had a big day out, finishing with three.
West Brunswick are building strongly as the season goes on, and this win will go a long way in earning themselves a ticket to September. Bronte Carlin and Charlotte Carney played pivotal roles in the win and will look to continue their form in the coming weeks.
Monash Blues hosted Old Scotch, who were also celebrating the clubs BCNA round, in what was a tough day for the Blues.
Monash only managed to record a solitary behind for the day, which came late in the fourth quarter, as the visitors stormed to an 89-point annihilation.
Old Scotch have proven to be a powerhouse of the competition yet again in season 2024 and this match highlighted the difference in quality between the two sides, in what will no doubt serve as a great learning for the up-and-coming Monash Blues.
In her milestone 50th game, Millie-Fraser Smith kicked five majors to take out best on ground honours and jump to second place in the league goal-kicking leaderboard, behind teammate Eloise Defina.
Meanwhile, Brook Thompson has had a strong season for the Blues and was named as their best player.
St Kevin’s travelled to Doncaster Reserve to take on Old Yarra Cobras, where the Saints reinforced their premiership credentials with a 64-point victory.
Lacking the star power to match up with the Saints, the Cobras were unable to penetrate the St Kevin’s defence, with it taking all their strength just to slow the onslaught of the merciless Saints, who added respective scores of 22, 15, 21 and 8 each quarter, while only conceding two points to the Cobras for the whole game.
Lara Moussa and Nicole Callinan can hold their heads high for the Cobras, knowing they gave it their all.
For the Saints, Kate Stanton was back to her best, finishing with two majors, while Hannah Smith played with forward prowess, slotting four of her own.
Looking ahead to Round 15, there are a number of games that could help shape the ladder heading into the final month of the season.
Kew host Melbourne University in the early time slot as they look to hold their place in the top 4. The undefeated St Kevin’s take on Collegians in what is sure to be a heated contest and Caulfield travel to face Old Scotch with the hope of causing an almighty upset.
Elsewhere, Coburg will look to snap a 5-game losing streak against Monash Blues, and West Brunswick play Old Yarra Cobras, where a win would put the pressure on the above teams in the fight for the last finals spots.

Paddy Grindlay
Bloods bested by dominant De La
De La Salle dealt Old Haileybury its first loss since April thanks to a stunning eight-goals-to-none second quarter, setting up a chaotic finish to the 2024 Premier B season.
Back in Round 5, the Bloods blew the game open in the third term, establishing a 40-point three quarter time advantage and holding off a fast-finish De La Salle outfit which, despite kicking seven goals in the final term, fell short by seven points.
This time around, it was Nick Hyland’s unit that made a stunning break - piling on 8.4 (52) to 0.2 (2) after being held goalless in the first term, the likes of Patrick Bohan and Ryan O’Meara busy.
“(I was) disappointed with that second quarter - we probably lost our discipline a little bit, that’s something we need to address,” said Old Haileybury coach Daniel Ward.
Needing a second half response, the Old Haileyburians found one, piling on five goals in the first 16 minutes of the third quarter to bring the margin back to one straight kick.
Holding a seven-point advantage at the final break and kicking to the scoring end, De La found top gear again, booting four goals to two (both via Andreas Stefanakis, who finished with five majors) in the final quarter to win 14.9 (93) to 10.7 (67).
“Our last six weeks, we knew we were going to be in for a tough end to the season,” said Hyland.
O’Meara and Adrian Indovino kicked three goals apiece, Bohan and Tom Stanton kicked two, and De La Salle are now just two points behind Old Haileybury on the ladder.
They’ve got Old Ivanhoe, Old Camberwell, Beaumaris and Old Geelong ahead in what’s been a tight and unpredictable seasonbut Hyland’s unit, to dredge up a footballing cliche, will be taking it one week at a time.
“We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves - we’ve been really good at resetting and refocusing,” he said.
At the other end of the ladder, Williamstown CYMS has set itself up for a crucial last month as it hopes to avoid relegation, fending off the Caulfield Grammarians at Fearon Reserve.
The CYs produced their best first half of the season, punting 9.7 (61) from 31 entries inside fifty, taking 10 marks inside the attacking arc and finding dangerous targets in Zayne Galea, Will Smyth and Zac Provest.
“We started really well - our ball movement was the best it was all year,” said coach Con Terzoglou.
Leading by three goals at three quarter time, the CYs looked well and truly on track to secure their third win of the season, but Guy McKenna’s men careered back into the contest with 10 scoring shots in the final term - unfortunately though, just one of those were goals.
“We gave ourselves a chance to win, and we just couldn’t take it,” said McKenna.
While three of the nine behinds in the quarter were rushed, McKenna noted “three or four shots that the boys would normally nail,” the CYs holding on 13.10 (88) to 11.13 (79) winners.
The CYs are now just two points adrift of Caulfield, needing at least one more win to escape relegation with Beaumaris, Old Ivanhoe, Old Trinity and St Bede’s / Mentone ahead.
They’re in good shape to secure that win too, having in Round 13 drawn with Old Haileybury to add with last weekend’s win over Caulfield.
“The message postgame was right now, everything is in our hands,” Terzoglou said.
Beaumaris, the CYs’ next target, gave Jarrod Gieschen’s Old Ivanhoe plenty to worry about in the first three quarters, but were ultimately unable to go with the Hoers in the last quarter.
Trailing by just three points at the final turn, the Sharks appeared well positioned to give themselves a chance at just their second win since Round 8, but with two players out of the game with injury fell short in a 12.9 (81) to 6.13 (49) defeat.
Beaumaris outperformed Old Ivanhoe in the contested possessions, clearances and inside 50s metrics to the three quarter time break, but the likes of Toby McLean, Ollie HayesBrown, Archie Franklin and Max Whiteman lifted the Hoers to a dominant fourth quarter.
The 19-year-old Franklin enjoyed a remarkable outing across half back of 44 disposals, 13 intercepts, 11 rebound 50s, 10 inside 50s and a whopping 202 ranking points according to Premier Data.
For Beaumaris coach Josh Bourke, it was another chance to develop his younger players in what’s been a difficult year for the Sharks in terms of injury and availability.
“We see the positives in the year: we’ve got some considerable senior experience into (younger players),” he said.
That positive was plain to see last weekend, as Sandringham Dragons-listed 200cm forward Luka Pecer booted three goals from 12 disposals in just his third senior game for the Sharks, while fellow Dragon, 17-year-old Ben Seers, was impressive in his second senior game.
The Sharks will host the CYs next week at Banksia Reserve while the Hoers have a crucial clash with De La Salle ahead - Old Ivanhoe sit fifth, just 2.21% behind Old Geelong in the finalsplaying fourth spot.
Old Trinity’s charmed run on the road continued in a crucial win over Old Geelong, the Ts now 6-1 in away games yet 3-4 on home turf.
Without coach Donald McDonald, who was watching at Marvel Stadium as his son Luke played his 200th AFL game in a Kangaroos victory, the Ts established an early 18-point advantage with three first-quarter goals from Dom Payman.
Hugh Beasley snapped up two goals before half time as well, the Ts taking a 26-point advantage into the long break, and from then on holding the OGs at least 16 points clear in a 12.8 (80) to 8.9 (57) win.
Nathan Brown’s five-game winning streak has come to an end, but his side will be determined to tighten its grip on fourth spot next week with a visit to Brindisi Street and St Bede’s / Mentone.
“We’ve just got to keep preparing well - it’s held us in good stead, getting our preparation right (and) our training attendance right,” Brown said.
After a six-win 2023 season, the prospect of finals football this year is an impressive one for the Ts.
“We’ve just got to be really solid and consistent - that’s something that’s been pleasing, we’re learning from some of our losses,” McDonald said.
Finally, Old Camberwell ensured it can’t be counted out of finals calculations by accounting for St Bede’s / Mentone thanks to a dynamite first quarter.
The Wellers kept the Tigers to two behinds while piling on 7.2 (44) to the first break, with Ben Hart, Rob West and Jack Spalding the destroyers.
Frustratingly for Tigers coach Brad Berry, all of the Old Camberwell goals came directly from turnovers, resulting in a “fair shot in the arm” at the quarter time huddle for his group.
But without Jack Behnk, Josh Cowan and Pat Tyquin the Tigers held fast, preventing what could’ve been a percentage-enhancing victory for the Wellers, unable to close the margin to a gettable figure but stemming the flow of Wellers goals in the 14.11 (95) to 7.10 (52) defeat.
“We can’t afford to drop one (quarter),” said Wellers coach Anson Brownless.
“Seven goals is great, but we sort of dropped off for a couple of quarters…you can’t drop a quarter against the top four.”
“The way that we allowed them to play, any team will play like that,” said Brad Berry, noting his team was “staring down the barrel of a 150-point defeat” at quarter time.
The Wellers, sixth on the ladder yet only 6.44% removed from a finals spot, have a crucial clash with Old Trinity this weekend at Daley Oval, while St Bede’s / Mentone host the OGs.

Tigers Triumph, Grammarians Dominate, and Williamstown Extend Unbeaten Run
Round 15 of Premier B Women’s delivered another great weekend of footy, as teams vied for percentages with finals just around the corner. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers secured a significant win over Fitzroy, Westbourne Grammarians dominated Aquinas OC, Old Geelong dismantled Old Xaverians, and Williamstown CYMS continued their undefeated streak against Beaumaris.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers overcame a determined Fitzroy side to clinch a 4.6 (30) – 2.6 (18) victory in a tightly contested match. The Tigers demonstrated their resilience and tactical nous, outlasting Fitzroy in a game that saw both sides showcase their defensive strengths.
Olivia Steinfort, Belinda Ousley, and Erin Carroll were pivotal for the Tigers, with their high work rate and ball distribution setting up scoring opportunities. Skipper Madeline Pearson was effective up in front of the sticks, using her strong marking and accurate kicking to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Fitzroy, despite the loss, put in a brilliant effort. The midfield battled hard, winning plenty of the ball and applying pressure. Simone Mooney, Nessa Cooney Hunt, and Tess Young were awarded best on ground. However, their forwards found it difficult to penetrate the wellorganised Tigers’ defence.
This win solidifies the Tigers’ position in the top four and highlights their ability to perform under pressure as they head into the finals.
Westbourne Grammarians delivered a dominant performance to defeat Aquinas OC 4.12 (36) – 1.0 (6), showcasing their strength and depth across the field. From the opening bounce, the Grammarians controlled the game, their midfield and forward line working in perfect harmony.
Kiara Henry, Odeth Lopez, and Morganne Gaston were outstanding, winning clearances and driving the ball forward with purpose. Hannah McMahon was a standout in the forward line, her strong marking and goal sense proving too much for the Aquinas’ defence to handle.
Aquinas OC struggled to match Westbourne’s intensity and skill. However, their defence put pressure on the Grammarians, forcing them to kick 12 behinds. Despite the strong efforts of Dianna Haines, Riley Christgoergl, and Tricia Cowan, who tried valiantly to turn the tide, the team was unable to sustain the pressure.
Old Geelong produced a clinical display to dismantle Old Xaverians 14.11 (95) – 3.3 (12), underlining their status as one of the competition’s powerhouses. From the outset, Old Geelong were relentless, their forwards and midfielders working seamlessly to dominate the contest.
Sophia McCarthy, Sophia Rothfield, and Jessie Gleeson were instrumental in their team’s success. Up forward, Sophia McCarthy had a day out, finishing with a bag of six goals and tormenting the Xaverians’ defence with her strong marking and accurate kicking.
Old Xaverians struggled to contain the onslaught. Despite their best efforts in defence, they were overwhelmed by Old Geelong’s attacking prowess. The midfield was also outgunned, unable to match the pace and intensity of their opponents.
This resounding victory reinforces Old Geelong’s credentials as a top contender, providing them with a significant confidence boost heading into the final rounds of the season.
Williamstown CYMS extended their unbeaten run with a 3.3 (21) – 0.7 (7) victory over Beaumaris in a hardfought encounter. The league’s leader showcased their defensive solidity and clinical finishing, grinding out a win in challenging conditions.
The defensive line was solid, demonstrating great intercept marks and leadership. The midfield controlled the tempo and ensured that Williamstown maintained possession and territory. Camryn Tyrrell, Kiara Palmar, and Sofi Georgas continued their impressive form, finding space and providing their team with ample chances.
Beaumaris put up a good fight against the undefeated side, with Zoe Barbakos, Caley Ryan, and Alana Hilford working tirelessly to keep their side in the contest. However, they found it difficult to break through Williamstown’s disciplined defensive structure and capitalise on their opportunities, kicking seven behinds.
This win maintains Williamstown CYMS’ perfect record and reinforces their position at the top of the ladder as the team to beat this season.
As Round 15 wraps up, the stage is set for an exciting run to the finals. Williamstown CYMS continue to lead the competition, their unbeaten record a testament to their consistency and quality. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers’ victory over Fitzroy solidifies their place in the top four, showcasing their resilience and tactical acumen.
Old Geelong’s demolition of Old Xaverians highlights their attacking prowess and depth, marking them as a serious final’s contender. Westbourne Grammarians’ dominant performance keeps them in the finals race, demonstrating their potential to cause upsets.
Fitzroy, despite their loss, remain competitive and will be looking to bounce back next week. Aquinas OC, Beaumaris, and Old Xaverians face a tough challenge ahead, needing to regroup and find form to finish the season on a positive note.
With only one round left before the finals, the next round carries significant weight. Teams will need to bring their best to secure their positions and build momentum heading into the crucial end-of-season matches.

Race for top two heats up as gap widens between top four and the rest
Barring any major upsets, the top four looks all but set in Premier C as Old Carey, AJAX, Hampton Rovers and Parkdale Vultures fight it out for an all-important top two finish. Old Carey, AJAX and the Rovers each sit on 12 wins whilst the Vultures are two games behind but hold a strong percentage.
An intriguing top four clash saw the Hampton Rovers win with ease, sending a statement to the competition as they defeated AJAX by 41 points at Trevor Barker Oval, subsequently knocking them off the top of the ladder. Much to the surprise of everyone, AJAX were completely silenced in the first half, only managing two solitary behinds to trail the Rovers by 45 points. If not for some inaccuracy in front of goal, Hampton could’ve been much further ahead. In a top-four defining game, AJAX needed a response in the second half, and whilst they marginally improved, the Rovers 42-point lead at three quarter time was too large a deficit to work down. Vice-Captain Liam O’Driscoll and Clinton Young starred for the Rovers with three goals each.
Thanks to a dominant first half where they excelled on the scoreboard, Mazenod defeated Glen Eira/ Old McKinnon by 15 points. Mazenod brought a lot of energy and fight from the first bounce, kicking six goals to two in the first quarter, immediately sending a strong message to the Gryphons home crowd that they will be a tough outfit to come up against. Their fast-start continued into the second quarter to see Mazenod lead by 34 points at half-time. To the Gryphons credit, they fought back in the second half, particularly in the final term where they piled on one goal after another, but it was too little too late as they failed to surpass Mazenod. The victorious Mazenod were aided by Hayden Boyce who had a great day out with five goals, whilst the Gryphons were lead up forward by Jasper Waldren who kicked three majors.
In an incredibly close encounter, PEGS prevailed to defeat Oakleigh by 6-points. The first half was a close affair which had many positives for both sides, but particularly Oakleigh who took an 8-point lead into half-time. PEGS carried on the momentum better in the third quarter to lead by 6-points at three quarter time. The fourth quarter was one to watch whereby both teams matched each other on the scoreboard in an even contest, resulting in PEGS claiming the four points to narrowly win. In a game where many players stood up and contributed to their team’s success, Daniel Flaherty kicked six goals for PEGS, whilst Luke Bowden kicked three of his own. Oakleigh have had a tough run in Premier C, but despite sitting on the bottom of the ladder, the Krushers have come very close in many games and still have a chance to avoid relegation.
Parkdale Vultures defeated the Monash Blues by 118 points. Whilst the first quarter saw both teams compete well and only separated by 4 points, the Vultures took their game to new heights after quarter time to kick seven goals in the second term and hold the Blues goal-less. The Blues fared better in the third quarter to kick a couple of goals and move the ball around the ground better, however the Vultures only accelerated their fast moving gameplay to kick a further eight goals, three of those to key forward Mitch Brown, who finished the game with nine. It was a similar story in the fourth quarter as Parkdale stormed home to claim the four points and a healthy percentage boost. Kai Day and Oliver Green each kicked three goals for the Vultures.
Old Carey had a brilliant day out, defeating Marcellin by 130 points which sees them finish the round on top of the ladder. Marcellin recorded the first major of the day, however Old Carey controlled the game from that point forward as Marcellin struggled to keep up

on the scoreboard. By half-time, Old Carey lead by 39 points, and extended their dominance over the game in the third quarter, piling on seven goals to Marcellin’s three behinds. The home side got over the line comfortably as Marcellin failed to find the goals in the final term. This win catapults Old Carey to 1st with a strong percentage, whilst Marcellin sit on 8th, equal in points with the 9th placed Monash Blues.
The action continues in Round 15 as many seasondefining games await, beginning with Marcellin hosting Oakleigh in a battle of 8th v 10th. This is a great opportunity for Marcellin to turn their fortunes around with a strong win at home, however Oakleigh have shown they can be dangerous and will certainly be eager to get off the bottom of the ladder.
Old Carey, looking to keep their top-two spot, will play Glen Eira/Old McKinnon in a game they’d expect to win. Likewise, AJAX will be looking to hold onto their top-two spot when they come up against the Monash Blues who have had a tough season to date.
The other games of Round 15 see PEGS host the Hampton Rovers, whilst Mazenod host the Parkdale Vultures in what promises to be an interesting battle between 5th and 4th.

Isla Tucker (Hampton Rovers)
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Isla Tucker from Hampton Rovers, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 14. At just 16, Isla has polled votes in every one of her five matches played for the Rovers and was involved in all twelve of Hampton’s scores in their win over Richmond Central on the weekend.
What the club said:
Isla has been playing football since she was four and has played over 125 junior games. She has also been a member of the Sandringham Dragons Futures team and has enjoyed the transition to senior footy at Rovers this year.
Isla enjoys the competitive spirit of football, friendships and developing as a player.
We recruited Isla to the women’s team after watching her play rep netball. Isla has fierce determination and amazing skill in both footy and netball. Isla’s ball winning ability and skill make her an exciting player to watch and coach.
Isla’s overhead marking is quite incredible for a small forward/ mid under 16. We look forward to Isla moving into the full Dragons squad and playing with the Rovers women.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Archie Franklin (Old Ivanhoe)
The VAFA congratulates Archie Franklin from Old Ivanhoe Grammarians who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 14. Archie has been a valuable addition to the Old Ivanhoe line up accumulating upwards of 30 disposals on multiple occasions.
What the club said:
Archie went to school at Ivanhoe Grammar and played his first senior game with the club at 16 years old as a Year 11 Student when were in Premier C.
In 2023 he juggled commitments with the Northern Knights and Ivanhoe Grammar (where he was integral in the school’s first 1st XVIII Premiership win in 60 years). He managed to fit another game in with the team last year as a year 12 student.
Archie goes by the nickname of “Choss” and along with his mate Trent McManus takes the responsibility to entertain our playing group each week with the “fines” for the week – raising money for the end of season trip.
Coach Jarrod Gieschen said, “We knew making the transition from Premier C to Premier B wasn’t going to be easy, and as well as retaining players we had to add some talent to our list. Archie has been an extremely important recruit this year and brings high training standards to our group. He has been extremely consistent in every game he has played, but it has been in the most recent period where he has relished the opportunity to play as a half back flanker where he has really excelled, he had 36 possessions against St Bedes/Mentone last week, and to get 44 possessions against Beaumaris was an outstanding achievement. Archie is part of a core group of U19 players that gives us a lot of confidence that the future is really bright for our club. We hope this is the first of many achievements that Archie wins wearing the Brown and White.”

The Magpies swoop to claim a big scalp
With three rounds to go the top four looks almost cemented in Division 1 men’s. The teams down the bottom end of the ladder may not be able to play finals but can still play the role as the Grinch as well as fighting to stay in the division.
Ormond played a great brand of football to defeat UHS-VU in a huge top-four battle by 16 points.
The Monders went all guns blazing in the first term kicking the first five goals of the game thanks to some great transition by Rhys Kennedy and Harrison Burt.
At quarter-time, both sides had seven inside 50s each for the term but the Monders were clinical, and the home crowd were dead quiet.
Vultures midfielders Esubalew Ramsay and Matt Dimattina went to work in the second term winning the centre bounces, giving their forwards better opportunities.
Jacob Hunt ran into an open goal to kick the first of the term and as Noah Seidermen kicked responded for the Vultures the game was back on.
Thomas Natsikas kicked a much-needed steadier for the Monders as they took a 17-point lead at half-time.
The third didn’t go to plan for the Vultures, giving away two free kicks in the back half to hand the first two goals.
Clearances swayed in favour of the Monders as Ethan Hanley and Jack Mason showed their class.
The Monders had a 27-point lead at three quarter-time which was extended by Jackson Hille kicking two goals in a row in the last term and four for the match.
Hille’s versatility is a huge takeaway for the match. His ability to play as a ruckman who can act like another midfielder is an asset. A late surge by the Vultures gave them some hope but the damage was done.
Ahead of the game, it was a matter of winner takes second place with the loser sliding as low as fourth.
Prahran continued their great form with a hard-fought 27-point win over Kew
The Bears knew it was one of the biggest games of their season, needing a scalp to give themselves a chance to play finals.
They certainly came out to play in the first half, applying elite pressure around the ball as Joshua Maccarrone led the way in the midfield.
It continued as both sides kicked goal for goal as Ned Waters kicked his second followed by Matt Odicho’s major. It was a solitary point lead for Kew at the main break.
The second half saw Prahran gain back control with some great transition through the middle of the ground by defenders Jayden Williams and Patrick Ribbands.
The top of the table side showed their great running ability as Jonathan Simonetta kicked the Bears out of touching distance.
The win solidifies Prahran’s place as ladder leaders, while Kew now need a perfect run to play finals, sitting two games behind the four.
Parkside moved into 3rd place after having a comprehensive win over the Preston Bullants by 64 points.
Contest was dominated by the Devils with Corey McKay and Cody Lawson working in tandem.
The Devils kicked the first four goals of the match giving themselves a 27-point lead at the first break.
A response was required and was given by the Preston Bullants kicking the first three goals of the second term with Rory Howard bringing up their first.
The Devils struck back with three goals of their own in red time to squeeze the Preston Bullants’ energy at the main break.
Meanwhile, Momentum from the back end of the second term was continued by the Devils. They restricted the Preston Bullants to just one goal in the second half thanks to the reliable Max Balassone and Nathan McIntosh who impressed again for their side down back.
Connection inside 50 was an issue all day for the Preston Bullants as the Devils got the points. The margin grew and grew throughout the second half, cementing a 13.13 (91) to 4.3 (27) win.
West Brunswick spoiled the party for Old Peninsula, defeating them in a one-point nail-biter. The game was neck and neck for the whole match with the Pirates needing
another win to continue their battle in making the top four.
The contest battle was a huge one to win and it swayed from one side to the next. For context, the margin at each break was four points, one, three then finally one point at the full-time siren.
Ben Ablett and Bill Irving were in and around the ball and contributed on the scoreboard for the Magpies as Jake Lovett and George Fletcher were willing to their fellow Pirates along.
Magpies forward Thomas Zafiropoulos played a crucial role in kicking the four goals as they took their opportunities when it mattered most.
It’s a tough loss to learn from for the Pirates as the game could have gone both ways. They now fall two games out of the four.
Therry Penola brought up their fourth win of the season defeating the Old Yarra Cobras by 43 points.
The first term was a game won out the middle with both sides having turns at locking the ball in their forward half. It was a real arm for most of the half until Therry Penola scored two goals in the last minute to damage the Old Yarra Cobras’ spirits.
The second half saw Therry Penola starting to use the ball well inside 50 as forwards Jarrod Egglestone and Connor Kilbane kicked nine goals between them.
The quality and quantity of entries made it tough work for the Old Yarra Cobras defence and proved too much.
Round 16 sees Parkside take on the Magpies at Pitcher Park. Last time they met the Magpies caused an upset and will be a must-watch.
An in-form Monders side will be hard to beat at home as they take on the Bears. Kew ruckman Mali Jacobs will have a tough matchup against Jackson Hille and Lucca Beaves this weekend.
UHS-VU will be looking to set the tone early against Therry Penola after conceding the first five goals of the game to Ormond.
The Old Yarra Cobras are back at home against the Preston Bullants. Both will be looking to end the season on a high so expect a heated contest.
The Pirates will be looking to respond and what better opportunity to do so against the top-of-the-table Prahran on their home deck.

Upset sparks exciting run home
Old Brighton have been dealt their first loss of the season at the hands of Marcellin who are proving themselves hot contenders come finals. Whilst both are premiership favourites, Marcellin had the edge over Old Brighton on Saturday in a game where the winner was no doubt going to take some confidence into finals where these two sides could meet again.
Marcellin’s victory now leaves them with a chance to square up first position next week if they go on to beat Old Haileybury by a significant margin and Old Brighton lose to the in-form Old Melburnians.
Whilst they haven’t quite had the season they had last year, with ups and downs in their form, Marcellin looks to be peaking at just the right time to run home strong and take this form into finals.
A strong first half set the game up with Marcellin kicking 5.2 to Old Brighton’s 2.2; noting they were able to keep the ladder leaders goalless in the first quarter. Old Brighton looked threatening at three quarter-time when they were 17 points down even an 18-point second half was not enough to claw their way back into the game. Marcellin held strong right the way through in an impressive four-quarter performance.
Plenty of talented players vying for spots in the Team of the Year lined up against each other on Saturday; no surprises that Zoe Glascott had an impressive game once again, with another three goals to add to her goal tally. Talia Oates was also impressive with two goals. The everreliable Old Brighton forward in Lily Tait kicked two goals for the day. Looking forward to seeing how these two line up in finals.
Old Melburnians continued their strong stint of form on the weekend, knocking off Parkdale Vultures by 35 points. Whilst they only have five wins for the season, Old Melburnians have now impressively won three of their last four games.
Despite a recent run of losses, Parkdale still looks set to progress to finals, with a strong percentage lead over the fourth placed Collegians. However, they’ll be hoping for some fiercer form in order to match Old Brighton and Marcellin.
Old Melburnians consistently piled on goals for the game, scoring 8.4, five of these in the first half. Parkdale meanwhile kicking 2.5 for the game, with only one goal on either side of half time. Prue Harvey and Ella Bennetts were best on for the day, kicking three and two goals each respectively.
For Parkdale, Tayla Ingram and Sienna Symons kicked their goals.
Old Melburnians face a tough match up against Old Brighton next week as they look to finish their season on a high. This head-to-head will put the Omlettes through their paces as they prepare for what could await should they make finals. Parkdale will play the inconsistent Collegians in an all-important third v fourth clash with finals standings up for grabs.
The potential wooden spooners in Old Haileybury recorded their fourth win of the season, albeit a very impressive win over Collegians. It has been a real form drop off for Collegians, who started the competition strongly when they moved a division.
The win showed a massive sign of improvement for the Hearts who managed to turn last week’s 76-point loss into a 65-point thumping over the Lions. The margin threatened to be much larger, given Haileybury kicked 21 behinds, but their strong defensive effort held Collegians to just 2 behinds for the match.
Serene Vudiniabola was a clear best on ground with four goals.
Old Haileybury will finish off the season playing the redhot Marcellin, whilst Collegians will be looking to bounce back against Parkdale Vultures at home.

Brunswick show no signs of slowing and Elsternwick hit the gas
What a ripper weekend of footy action in Round 15 of Division 2 Men’s! There’s a fierce battle among several teams vying for the final three positions, while Brunswick has already locked in a top four spot.
The round kicked off at Lindsay Hasset Oval with Whitefriars defeating South Melbourne Districts by 5 points. The final score was a real nail-biter, with South Melbourne scoring 10.9 (69) and Whitefriars clinching it with 11.8 (74).
The Swans took a narrow lead early with Jamie Brooker booting 2 of his 3 goals for the game in the first quarter. Coming off the main break, the Friars got their skates on, converting a 12-point deficit into a 7-point lead.
In a hot contest it was the Whitefriars who were able to convert opportunities when they presented themselves with an 8-goal second half to come away with the victory.
The Friars fought hard for the win with Nicholas Garratt leading the goal kicking with three for the afternoon, while Thomas Jacotine was best on for the travelling side. The Swans are currently in fourth place with 36 points, so every upcoming game is crucial for them.
At Melbourne High School, Elsternwick dominated the hosts, MHSOB, by 34 points and currently sit at the third spot on the ladder. The final score saw the Wickers triumph with 16.15 (111) to MHSOB’s 11.11 (77).
Right from the outset, the Wickers took the lead. Their solid defence and midfield coordination created numerous opportunities for their forwards to impact on the scoreboard.
Elsternwick’s Daniel Marchese and Jamie Mount each scored four goals, while vice-captain Spencer Hankin supported them with three goals and created pressure on the opposition. Will Hellier from MHSOB also scored four goals but his side couldn’t get their hands on the ball enough to keep with the rampage that came from Elsternwick for the full four quarters.
Currently, MHSOB is sixth on the points table and will need other results to go their way in the remaining games of the home and away season to play finals football.
Brunswick has asserted its dominance in Division 2, maintaining top form since the start of the competition. Despite securing a top four spot, the team has remained relentless in their pursuit of success.
This time at Ferndale Park, they secured a commanding 50-point victory over the hosts, St Mary’s Salesian
The first quarter was a real tussle as both teams put in solid performances. Brunswick managed to score 5.3, while St Mary’s trailed slightly with 4.3.
However, the Nobs were just getting warmed up. As we moved into the second quarter, the Mobs found their stride and kept St Mary’s from making significant goal conversions.
St Mary’s came back strong in the third quarter, but by then, Brunswick had the game pretty much in the bag. Even though they may have fumbled a bit, Brunswick kept scoring whenever they got the chance.
Brunswick’s Hayden Parker was on fire, kicking 6 goals and was the player of the match. His teammate Paul Scamporlino also showed his skills, booting in 5 goals to support him.
Parker’s form will be crucial for the Nobs, especially with the top four in sight. On the flip side, St Mary’s Trent Ryan scored 3 goals but unfortunately ended up losing.
Currently, St Mary’s is standing seventh on the table.
At Aquinas College, the 8th-placed Aquinas defeated the 10th-place Bulleen Templestowe by 38 points, 111 to 73.
The first quarter began with Aquinas in the lead, but the Bullants made a comeback and were ahead by 8 points just before halftime. The third quarter was crucial for both teams, and Aquinas worked hard to maintain their lead. At the start of the fourth quarter, the score was Aquinas at 83, Bullants at 63 points.
In the fourth quarter, Bulleen Templestowe failed to convert opportunities and only scored 10 points in the final quarter, while Aquinas outplayed them.
Harry Dwyer and Garrison Asciak each scored a hat trick of goals for Aquinas, whereas Jack Cowell scored 3 goals for Bulleen Templestowe.
Hawthorn has outplayed ninth-placed Wattle Park at Rathmines Road Reserve by 61 points. The score at the final siren read Hawthorn at 13.21 (99) and Wattle Park at 5.8 (38)
That was a massive win for Hawthorn. It’s crucial for them because they are currently sitting in fifth place. They’ve got to give it their all in the final three matches of the competition.
The Hawks came out strong in the first quarter, showing their aggressive play against the Animals. The Hawks didn’t allow the Animals to score any goals and took a commanding 39-point lead.
The Hawks maintained their lead despite Wattle Park creating some pressure in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Hawthorn once again dominated, shutting down Wattle Park’s chances. In the final quarter, Hawthorn sealed the victory.
Eamonn Avery of Hawthorn delivered an outstanding performance, kicking 5 crucial goals. Overall, a fantastic team effort propelled Hawthorn to a well-deserved win.
Get ready for some footy action at Lindsay Hasset Oval this weekend as South Melbourne aims to secure a win against Wattle Park. Meanwhile, over at Whitefriars College, the Friars will battle the mighty Brunswick.
At Ted Ajani Reserve, Bulleen Templestowe will face off against MHSOB in a must-win encounter. Hawthorn will travel to Ferndale Park to take on St Mary’s Salesian, while Elsternwick plans to challenge Aquinas.

Glen Eira clinch minor premiership as finals race heats up
The ladder has steadied after the penultimate round of the home and away season. Glen Eira/Old McKinnon have secured the minor premiership, 10 points ahead of the rest of the pack with just one match to play. Meanwhile the race for that fourth and final spot in finals is mathematically still open, should the Whitefriars take a hit and Oakleigh win their final match.
Hampton Rovers have bounced back in fine fashion after a defeat at the hands of Whitefriars last round to take home the four points in a dominant performance over Richmond Central
The Rovers now hold a 2-0 record against the Snakes this season: on this occasion defeating the home side by 16 points. Scoring opportunities were shared around, both sides with four individual goal kickers, while Hampton’s Alana Graham was the sole dual goal kicker.
After a slow start from both sides just easing into the contest, the Rovers took control in the second term to put 4.2 on the scoreboard, taking a 20-point advantage into half time. While Richmond clawed their way back in the third, the deficit proved too big a task to overcome with the final score reading 4.2 (26) to 6.6. (42).
Isla Tucker has continued an outstanding run of form earning herself best on accolades for her impressive ball use and support in the forward line.
After 15 rounds, Mazenod remain on just the two wins for the season, falling to Whitefriars on the weekend.
In a low scoring affair, there was really not much separating the teams early. Mazenod were quick out of the gates with a 3.2 (20) first quarter. Which outscored the Friars’ two straight goals. It was looking like there was a clear scoring end out at Central Reserve, as it was Whitefriars who took the reins after the first change to add 20 points of their own, taking a 10-point buffer at the main break.
Scoring opportunities dried up from there as fatigue set in and the wind played a factor. With a combined score for the second half of 3 behinds, it was Whitefriars who held on 4.8 (32) to Mazenod’s 3.3 (21).
Rosalie Priorello impressed for the home side, while Mia Smith found her season-best form for the Whitefriars leading the charge and finishing with a major of her own.
The clash of Old Trinity and Power House wasn’t to be with the T’s unable to field a team last round for the second consecutive weekend. The forfeit awards Power House the four points to keep them in equal second on the ladder, tied with Hampton Rovers, and comfortably ahead on percentage.
Old Trinity alas is out of the finals race and will close out their season next weekend with one final match against Richmond Central at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.
Over at Packer Park it was a forgettable encounter for Old Camberwell/AJAX who couldn’t handle the might of Glen Eira/Old McKinnon. The Gryphons exerted absolute dominance in a full throttle rampage that produced a final scoreline of 108 to nil.
The Gryphons had their chances and much of the footy, and boy did they take them. Lily Fitzpatrick and Zoe Rossiter finished the game with 3 goals apiece and were just two of nine individual goal scorers.
Glen Eira’s ascendency in the game was evident through their forward pressure but equally as so in defending their opponents from getting their hands on the ball, with the amalgamated Old Camberwell/AJAX side unable to register a score.
Accuracy is an area that the Gryphons could look to sharpen should they wish to have a clean run come finals, with a final score of 14.24 having the potential to produce a much higher margin if the ball had gone through the big sticks on a few of those occasions.
Glen Eira goes into the final round of the home and away season with full body confidence, while Old Camberwell/ AJAX will have one final roll of the dice at securing a victory in Division 2 Women’s competition in 2024.
A win to Oakleigh over Hawthorn on the weekend sees their hopes of making finals still alive, should results go their way in the final round of football. The Krushers have held off the Hawks for the second time this season this time by a margin of 20 points.
It wasn’t until the second quarter where momentum started to build for Oakleigh surging ahead with 4.2 for the term, while Hawthorn only managed 2 points of their own. Kaitlyn Sidopoulos played out of her skin in the second with 3 of the 4 goals coming off her boot. This propels her into second on the competition’s leading goal kicker tally, just 1 goal behind Glen Eira/Old McKinnon’s Zoe Rossiter.
The only other goal scored in the match came in the final term and went the way of the Hawks thanks to seasoned forward, Lily Hutchinson who had another best on performance.
With a strong percentage, Oakleigh will head into Round 16 with an air of confidence that should they secure the win over a formidable Power House – which is no small feat in itself –and fourth-placed Whitefriars lose to Hawthorn, then they will have a crack at a finals berth.
The sixteenth and final round of the Division 2 Women’s competition has arrived with some big clashes to close out the home and away season. As aforementioned, there is none more significant than Power House v Oakleigh with finals on the line. Meanwhile, Whitefriars host Hawthorn in a must-win encounter should they wish to secure their top four position and make an appearance in the 2024 finals series.
Lookout for some exciting footy over at Castlefield Reserve as Hampton Rovers come up against minor Premiers in Glen Eira/Old McKinnon in what could be a finals preview, showcasing some of the best talent in the competition. Rounding out the weekend, and inevitable the season, Richmond Central host Old Trinity, while Old Camberwell/ AJAX will face off against Mazenod in what could be their best chance at a victory.

Richmond Central overrun Swinburne University to maintain finals position
In a low-scoring affair, North Brunswick have overcome a two-game form slump to hand La Trobe University their ninth straight loss.
It didn’t come without nerves however, as a spirited La Trobe utilised their home fortress to great effect. The Trobers opened the game with a nine-point quarter-time lead, holding the Bulls goalless. A low-scoring second term saw just one goal scored, La Trobe holding onto a slim four-point advantage.
North Brunswick’s quality showed in the second half however, as they creeped ahead by three points at threequarter-time. A game-high 21-point quarter in the final term was the final blow to a dogged effort by La Trobe, as the Bulls triumphed 6.11 (47) to 4.6 (30).
La Trobe coach Andy Castles was impressed with his side’s efforts against a top four titan of the competition.
“[I was] super proud of the boys’ efforts to go toeto-toe with one of the best teams in the comp… We matched them for physicality and speed, but in the end their organisation and methodical ball movement shone through.
“There were a few chances late that we didn’t capitalise on but hard to be disappointed with the effort,” Castles said.
Chadstone have claimed their second win in 2024 with a 73-point thumping of Eley Park. The Synners entered their Retro Round with confidence having beaten the Sharks earlier in the year, and once again prevailed in Round 15.
In a hotly contested first term, the Sharks remained in the hunt until the first siren, continuing their improving form from a win against La Trobe and valiant loss to St John’s. However, Chadstone capitalised on lapses in concentration in the second quarter, kicking seven goals and seven behinds to Eley Park’s 1.3.
It was the defining quarter of the match, as a muchdetermined Eley Park continued to fire shots at the Synners, yet they were met with equally as many back. A high-scoring affair, Chadstone ran out 73-point winners, 23.16 (154) to 11.15 (81).
Lachie Blunden ran amok for Eley Park as Jesiah Mcgarvie kicked four. Chadstone’s forward line played in sync all game, with Braiden Leong (4), Ben Ogilvie (5), and Anthony Brown (6) combing for 15 goals.
With Chadstone taking the bye next week, Eley Park will need to secure a third win within their final three matches to avoid the wooden spoon.
St John’s have ended the finals aspirations of Albert Park, cruising past the Falcons by 110 points. The JOCs unloaded an eight-goal barrage in the opening term, taking a 27-point advantage into the first break. St John’s never took the foot off the pedal, accumulating 38 scoring shots by the final siren.
Mitch Barry led the team in the forward line with seven goals, as Tyler Neal and Tom Siposs were amongst St Johns best. Following the loss, Albert Park are two games and a ton of percentage behind the top five, effectively ending their remaining finals chances.
St John’s coach Tim Edwards was pleased with a “wellrounded game” from his men.
“I was pleased with the team performance, our midfielders really got to work, and we kicked a lot straighter this week.”
Coming into this weekend’s match Richmond Central and Swinburne University were locked on points, the Snakes edging into fifth on percentage. Following Saturday’s affair though, the Snakes have officially formed a buffer on their finals spot after a 29-point win.
A sharpshooting performance from Swinburne kept themselves within touching distance throughout the match, scoring just one behind all afternoon. The Razorbacks even found themselves in front at halftime with a 14-point lead, thanks to an accurate 9.1 (55) to a wasteful Richmond Central’s 5.11 (41).
Richmond Central clicked into gear in the second half however, keeping Swinburne scoreless in the third. The Snakes tacked on 4.4 to reverse the 14-point deficit in their favour by the end of the third. At the final siren, persistent shots on goal were enough to put away the Razorbacks, Richmond Central winning 13.18 (96) to 11.1 (77).
Charles Spring, Aaron Pearson and Jack Bilson were Richmond Central’s best for the match, as their focus turns to an away game against La Trobe in Round 16.
Canterbury have highlighted the wide-open premiership race, holding off a second-half surge from Power House. Canterbury burst out of the blocks, leading by 24 at quartertime, then 39 by the main break.
Power House’s spirit never wavered however, and their attack flowed fluently in the third term. Power House booted five goals to one, closing the margin to just 14.
Canterbury responded to the challenge though, as early fourth-quarter inaccuracy was ruled by Power House. Canterbury would ultimately kick the first of the last, providing the momentum to hold off Power House by 17 points.
Liam Di Martino played his best game for the Cobras, as Lachy Shearer and Nathan Beacom were once again in the best. Power House’s Cianan Doherty and Benjamin Circosta were best on for Power House, who now slip below Canterbury to fourth on the Division 3 ladder.
Three rounds remain and hosting a home final has never been more uncertain. Let’s take a look at Round 16’s upcoming fixtures.
Eley Park host Swinburne, who are clinging onto a chance at finals. St John’s travel to Canterbury in a top four blockbuster match, whilst Power House take on Box Hill North. La Trobe will aim to upset Richmond Central after their defiant efforts this week, as North Brunswick host Albert Park.

Uni Blues and Old Brighton rise to the top, as finals football beckons in U19 Premier
The Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition has entered its final month of the home and away season. With just 3 games remaining, teams are still jostling for an exclusive seat on the finals-football bus.
Round 15 having commenced and completed over the weekend, showcased that the crème of the Under 19’s crop is beginning to rise to the top.
The round kicked off in style on Friday night, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers glistening under the lights of Mentone reserve. Requiring a victory over Beaumaris to remain in touch with the top five, the Tigers played with vigour to gallop away as 72-point winners.
The game was essentially put out of touch for Beaumaris when SBMT piled on four opening quarter goals, whilst keeping their opposition scoreless. Such dominance would persist throughout the duration of the contest, the final score reflecting the sheer dominance of the Tigers.
Forward livewire Jack Meredith kicked five for the victors, whilst teammate Angus Shepherdson was judged best afield.
Beaumaris will look to reignite their season when they take on Old Xaverians this week.
Moving into Saturday, De La Salle continued their late season charge to down Williamstown CYMS by 32 points.
Trailing at the opening break and winning by just 3 points at the start of the last quarter, De La Salle put their foot to the pedal in the final 20 minutes.
Captain Joshua Stewart stood tall, slotting 3 majors, posing a problem all day to the Williamstown defensive unit. His teammates Max Miller and Mack Higginbotham chipped in nicely, steering the De La Salle boys to victory once again in season 2024.
Reminiscent of a grizzled and beaten fighter in an 80s boxing flick, De La has lifted from the canvas stunningly in the latter half of 2024. They have now gone six weeks without a loss, after shockingly dropping the first nine games of the season.
For their opposition, Williamstown, it was a gallant all-round effort, one that ultimately fell short. Charlie Norris, Jake Connors and Xavier Snelling persisted in the loss.
Later in the Saturday schedule, University Blues once again proved the legitimacy of their talented youngsters, trumping Old Scotch by 57-points.
A stirring win, one that would shoot them into second position on the ladder, would come off the back of a stunning team performance.
Carl Ziebarth, Oliver Sleiman and Henry Woolcock were standouts, whilst star forward Luca Di Lallo enjoyed a day out, kicking six majors.
Whilst Old Scotch remain in third position after the loss, it was an
alarming result. So close to finals, the side will look to regain their previous form.
The penultimate game of the round saw Old Brighton return to form, beating Old Xaverians by 21-points.
A game that simply needed to be won for Old Brighton, resulted in just that for the side. A close contest for most of the day, the Brighton boys reared away late to register a victory that would cement their position in top spot on the ladder.
Lachlan McCluskey kicked a dazzling four majors for his side in the win, whilst Mason Szyoni proved why he remains as one of the more in-form players in the competition.
For Old Xaverians, the result meant that they surrendered fifth position on the ladder to St Bedes/Mentone, officially falling out of the finals bracket.
As speculated, the race for finals in Under 19’s Premier is proving to be extremely close. Old Xavs will look to regain some form in their final three games in a bid to feature in finals football in 2024.
The final matchup of the round saw St Kevin’s defeat Caulfield Grammarians by a convincing 114-points.
A goal-fest at TH King oval saw a plethora of players cash in down forward. Hudson Lefoe headlined the list of players with multiple goals, ending his day with five. Jack Luscombe, Nicholas Dynan and Liam Edwards were named best afield in the landslide win.
St Kevin’s remain in fourth position with three rounds remaining, whilst Caulfield have been eliminated from the finals race with the result.
Looking onwards to Round 16, a handful of season-defining games sit on the horizon.
De La Salle will look to spoil St Kevin’s weekend, Whilst Old Xaverians have an opportunity to jump into the top five when they play Beaumaris.
Uni Blues will play St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in a top of the table bout, whilst Old Brighton will look to consolidate their form when they play Williamstown CYMS. Old Scotch will play Caulfield Grammarians to close out the round.
