SEASON 2023 - August 19
Strategic Information Forums
Over the past week and a half, our VAFA management have been busy delivering a series of Strategic Information Forums for our VAFA Clubs.
The key objective was to arm our Clubs with strategic information to help them best plan for the future, as well as provide some dedicated resources that will assist them in meeting some of their more immediate challenges.
We took the approach of coming out to the Clubs with the meetings held in venues according to the geographical locations of our Clubs:
- Presentation #1 was held at Elsternwick Park for our Clubs in the south;
- Presentation #2 was hosted by UHS-VU in Royal Park for our northern clubs (courtesy of Tony Boyce); and
- Presentation #3 was hosted by Hawthorn AFC for our eastern clubs (courtesy of Sam Waldron).
Across the three sessions, we had close to 100 attendees representing 54 Clubs.
VAFA GM Football & Umpiring, Matt Collister, and Clubs & Community Manager Sean Walker, joined me in presenting the information. The majority of our Board Members were also in attendance across the three sessions. The sessions covered the following important topics:
1. VAFA Strategy
An update on how we are performing across some of the key elements of our VAFA Strategic Plan that was first released in December 2022.
Governance & Finance - delivered a new Constitution, Board Charter and Strategic Plan;
Commercial & Brand - maximised commercial opportunities with existing and new partners; increased media engagement across broadcasting, traditional media and social media;
Jason ReddickCEOCommunity - established an Inclusion Advisory Group and inclusion training program; collated database of best practice for supporting clubs;
Football & Umpiring - established fixtures and section structures to reduce forfeits; introduced satellite umpire training base to increase umpire numbers.
2. AFL Data & Insights
The AFL provided a 10-year Roadmap where they identified the macro trends on the changing profile of community sports participation. We provided information on how the VAFA competition and Clubs can be well placed to accommodate those changes.
3. Metro Future Strategy
We outlined the new AFL Victoria driven project involving the 10 Metropolitan Community Leagues, with an aim to align growth strategies and governance models to better serve the game now and into the future. We outlined some of the important elements that we have already advocated for through this process.
4. Tailored Club Support
We presented an online survey for Clubs to identify their pain points and gave examples of the resources that we will customise for them (eg. Local Government Area demographics, Football participation numbers, resource toolkits and best practice examples.
The positive feedback and subsequent interaction from the Club representatives certainly supported the importance of this venture. Once we deliver the information kits to the Clubs, we will be following up to see how we can continue to improve our service and positioning all our Clubs to meet their current challenges and maximise the opportunities ahead of them.

Batten down the hatches, Old Xav’s throw chaos into the top 4
It was always going to happen, wasn’t it?
A round of footy in William Buck Premier never goes to complete script. The Old Xaverians can breathe a heavy sigh of relief. In their centenary year very little has seemingly gone their way. However, this win over the University Blues might be the making of the side for 2024.
President of the club Matt Cosgrave told VAFA Media at half-time he was worried about his ticker getting through another intense half of footy like the first one, coupled with the anxiety that threatened the Xav’s fight to stay in William Buck Premier.
Despite his beloved Demons going down to Carlton, Cossie would have rested well last night.
Xav’s brought the intensity and the pressure. As the rain started almost at the same time of the game, they settled the better against a side fighting for a top two chance keeping Blues goalless in the first term, and kicking two of their own.
Michael Batten can lay claim to being the spiritual leader of the team, he provided the spark in the first half around the ball and would go on to finish with three goals for the day. Even though the Blues trailed by as much as 30 points during the second term, they fought their way back into the contests with back-to-back goals to Will Carrington, and Mo Akoch closing the gap to three points at the final change. Taking into account the way the season has played out, and what’s left in the year, you would have been forgiven for thinking the Blues would storm the castle and run away with the points. The red and black mafia wouldn’t be denied, Denis Symeopoulos and Dan Robinson willed themselves to every contest, Marcus Stavrou played a captains game, and Jack Boyd has dispelled any myths that big fella’s can only win hitouts.
A killer blow to the Blues who went down by 25 points, and fall from second to fourth with a fortnight to go. Old Xaverians are safe. Even if the most pessimistic of people believe that not to be the case. Old Haileybury is the next challenge in a fortnight.
In the relegation zone it’s starting to get even tighter. Collegians will likely finish as the minor premiers in 2023. Two games ahead of Old Scotch, St Kevin’s and University Blues. With a percentage line of 184.31% – It makes for fine reading. However, for fans of the Lions, your September starts early. After this weekend’s bye, St Kevin’s
in Round 17, Old Scotch in Round 18. A massive fortnight before the finals.
The 52 point victory over Old Haileybury was a professional one. Turn up, bank the four points, move onto next week and hope there’s no injuries in the process. The Bloods recognised club champion Nick Gooda who played game 150, they looked up for the fight early on in the contest, but unable to generate enough forward entries to trouble the Lions.
At the other end of the ground, Will Pocknee continues this incredible run in front of goal. Another four majors to his name, Dave Mirra back in the side and kicked three. 38 goals from 13 games this year for Pocknee. Incredible to think before this year between 2014-2022 he had played 34 senior games and kicked 11 goals in total. Jared Rivers and the purple army have unlocked this caged Lion in 2023. Old Haileybury are clutching to eighth spot by the skin of their teeth. 2.95% ahead of Old Melburnians in ninth. Old Xaverians and St Kevin’s is the last two games for Daniel Ward’s side. They will need to win one, they’ll want to win both, but relying on percentage to stay alive is a risky game to play.
St Kevin’s and Old Melburnians didn’t reach any great heights as a spectacle. The reigning premiers got the job done by 33 points with most of the damage done on the scoreboard during the third term. Keeping the OM’s goalless in the first quarter, the margin stayed at 11 points at the main change before SKOB pulled away.
Paddy Kerr with another four goals. He now has 11 from his past three outings and for all the focus the Collegians forward line is getting, the premiership full-forward of 2022 is starting to get motoring. Will Coates is doing similar in the ruck. Without Mitch Wallis and Luke Winter, Sandringham’s VFL captain Anthony Seaton was able to slot into the team as well as two more debutants Ethan Bowden and Christian Woolrich.
Sitting in third with 7% the gap to Old Scotch in second, the most successful team in this era will take this weekend’s break to full advantage and then set up the biggest dingdong battle of 2023, Collegians in Round 17 at the TH King. Importantly for Old Melburnians, despite the loss, they weren’t blown out of the water and they stay well within touching distance of Old Haileybury. University Blues in a fortnight before finishing with Caulfield Grammarians in the game that will decide their fate.
Like Old Haileybury, they need and have to win one, they’ll want to win both. Percentage will not be enough to have them in the VAFA’s topflight in 2024.
Percentage, at this stage, is enough for Old Scotch to lay claim to second spot on the ladder. Back on the winners list after last weeks loss to St Kevin’s, this weekend a 60 point victory over
University Blacks
A 5-goal opening quarter started the day on a strong note for the Cardinals. Despite the Blacks’ best efforts, they were unable to bridge the gap by half time. After the main break, the Cardinals went to work with another eight goals, most impressive was the nature of the defence holding Uni Blacks to just one more goal during that time.
Ryan Valentine and Tyler Sellers, future stars of the VFL combined for six of the 16 goals the Cardinals kicked. If they’re too remain in this side for September, they’re going to be tough to beat.
Sam Grant fought out of his division against Josh Steadman and took the points. Ben Hays and Brodie Easton patrolling the half-back flanks and wings. The learnings from seven days ago, on show at the Melbourne Uni.
Caulfield Grammarians and Collegians are the final two games for Scotch. Victory in Round 17 could see them lock into a top two position.
Blacks will be disappointed with the final result, they’ve had plenty to like in the second half of the season. Old Brighton at Brighton Beach Oval the next assignment before finishing with traditional rivals Uni Blues in Round 18.
Incredibly, Old Brighton’s season still has a pulse. It’s a small one, can barely be heard, but it’s still there. Putting Caulfield Grammarians away to the tune of 105 points.
They’re two games and 4% behind University Blues. Should they win their final two matches, and the world comes crashing down for Uni Blues, the Tonners could well feature in September. They’ve done it before.
Jordan Segar and Kai Dimattina combined for six goals against the Fields. Darby Hipwell and Tom Blamires both welcomed returns from Sandringham. Oli Lowe turned into an enemy of his Sandy teammates returning to the Fields line up.
Whilst a positive for Caulfield was seeing Oscar Roberts make his VFL debut for Port Melbourne, it left the Fields even more vulnerable down in defence.
A strong first quarter before Old Brighton got on top, 17 goals to two after quarter time.
Uni Blacks and the Old Xaverians are the last two games for Old Brighton. Old Scotch and Old Melburnians the remaining games for the Fields.
One last bye before the business end of the year. A chance for us all to take stock. And still, we are no closer to knowing who’s going to finish where.

Caulfield take down the Bears, as Coburg cause upset of their own
With just two rounds of the William Buck Premier Women’s Competition remaining, a big upset for a finals favourite on the weekend has made the race to finals a lot more interesting.
Caulfield Grammarians are making a strong push for home as they come down the straight, with their eyes firmly set on finals. They came out firing and were able to do what only one other has managed this season and knocked off finals favourite Kew. They now find themselves with a handy one-match buffer ahead of Collegians, comfortably in fourth position on the ladder at the conclusion of Round 16.
The 17-point victory could have been a lot more comprehensive, given they kicked six behinds. Kew managed to get plenty of the ball in the first term, scoring 1.7 to give them a narrow lead, in a low-scoring affair. However, accuracy was also an issue for Kew, given the fact they failed to register a score for the rest of the game.
Kew’s singular goal came through Rachael McDonough which saw her appear in the best, whilst it was Olivia Storer who was their best overall. Meanwhile for victors, Caulfield, each of their goals had a different goalkicker. Ellie Cleland was their best, whilst Chloe O’Malley continued her impressive season.
Next weekend, Kew will play Coburg at Piranha Park whilst Caulfield will play Melbourne Uni at their home ground.
Old Scotch had an incredibly dominant victory over Fitzroy on the weekend, keeping them to two goals for the game to record a 65-point victory. The tone for the game was set in the first quarter, when the Cardinals kicked 4.4. They were quieter throughout the second and third quarter, recording three goals in that period, yet a dominant four goal fourth quarter saw them run away with an easy victory.
On a tough day for Fitzroy, Molly Tancred was a shining light with two goals for her team. For the Cardinals, Lucy Morley was evidently best on ground with a four-goal performance, whilst Jade Wise and Mietta Kendall both recorded two goals apiece.
Next weekend, Fitzroy will host Collegians whilst the Cardinals have a bye before a final home and away match in Round 18.
In a low scoring affair on Saturday afternoon, West Brunswick had a 15-point win over Melbourne Uni Women’s. Melbourne Uni were only able to register one goal for the game, coming in the third quarter after they failed to score at all in the first half.
West Brunswick’s 3 goals came off the boots of three different players in what was very much a team effort. It wasn’t until the final term when the Magpies really turned up the heat to score a further 2.1, claiming victory.
West Brunswick will face their toughest challenge next weekend as they take on reigning premiers St Kevin’s at Righetti Oval next weekend, whilst Melbourne Uni will host Caulfield Grammarians.

In the final game of the round on Sunday afternoon, Coburg had a surprise victory over Collegians. This result sees the middle order all tied up on 32-points on the ladder, only separated by percentage.
Coburg’s impressive first half was where the game was won, scoring 34 points by the main break to Collegians’ one goal. However, Collegians found themselves staging a late comeback with 21 points in the second half, managing to slow down the Lions’ scoring.
Claire Cashman and Georgia Sampson both had two goals to their names for the game, whilst it was Teah Stepan who was the best on ground for Coburg. Collegians did not register their goalkickers or best players at the time of writing.
Round 17 will see Collegians travel to Brunswick St Oval to play Fitzroy, whilst Coburg hosts Kew at Piranha Park.

Tigers and Sharks shaking things up in Premier B
With only two rounds to come this season, the middle part of the ladder continues to be tight as Beaumaris mount a finals race which started with them defeating Old Geelong on the weekend. Likewise, St Bedes/ Mentone have kept things interesting with a win over the second placed Fitzroy in a round that was vitally important for clubs with their seasons still alive.
While inaccuracy caused some minor problems, Beaumaris were able to secure a 65-point win against Old Geelong at Banksia Reserve. The Sharks finished with a staggering 40 shots on goal but converting in front of goal was an issue with 25 behinds for the afternoon. Despite this, Joel Cusack showed some polish with five majors along with Ben Hempel who kicked four.
Old Geelong was restricted to just 7 goals for the match with Beaumaris putting on a blistering second half as they dominated the ball movement and maintained much of the possession. The Sharks ruckman Callum Heath was once against their best as he continues his fine year, with he and Harry Thompson of Old Trinity standing out as two of the strongest ruckman in the competition. The win for the Sharks see’s them now on equal points with Old Geelong and only a game behind De La Salle and St Bedes/Mentone who sit in the four.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers kept their finals hopes intact with an 8-point victory over Fitzroy. In what was a fantastic high scoring game, the Tigers were able to kick six goals in the first quarter to edge the margin at quarter time out to 19 points. The final change saw the Tigers 20 points in front before the Roys got going in the last kicking four goals to two.
Fitzroy’s Aiden Lambert was handy down forward with four goals while the Tigers were assisted by Jack Ferraro who finished with four and was named as their best. Chris Mangoni also played a part in the forward line with three majors.
For the Roys, it’s a loss that will sting, particularly heading into September where momentum is crucial for teams vying for the ultimate success. The Tigers finish the round inside the four, but they must win their final two games against De La Salle and Williamstown with the Sharks holding a significantly higher percentage.
De La Salle found themselves in an unusual situation with an incredibly low scoring match against Old Trinity with the rain clearly causing problems for both sides. Old Trinity finished the day with just two goals while De La Salle was only able to get the win with just five goals.
De La Salle’s Joshua Cumberlidge kicked two majors with Lachlan Gawel their best on ground. For De La Salle they continue their run to the finals in third spot but with the unpredictability of the season they too will be under pressure to perform during the final two rounds.
The final two games of the round were somewhat predictable with Williamstown defeating Monash Blues by 47 points and St Bernards beating AJAX by 93 points. While they won’t be playing finals, the season from Williamstown has been a positive one with a young developing list continuing to gain experience at a strong level. Oskar Manton again was busy up forward with four goals while Will Smyth also kicked four goals.
The Snowdogs continue to build momentum at a crucial stage of the season which again saw a plethora of goal kickers hit the score board. Dom Sullivan kicked five majors for the afternoon and joined the list of their 10 goals kickers, six of which had two or more goals while Ethan Schumann was named the Snowdogs best player. Premier B have a chance to regroup and tighten up on those areas that need improving as they head into a bye round, ahead of what will be a mammoth final two matches of the home and away season for 2023.

Top four continue march to finals
The VAFA Premier B Women’s competition continued to deliver exciting action in Round 16, with four compelling matches as we approach finals.
In the match of the round at Jubilee Park, Aquinas OC emerged victorious against Old Yarra Cobras by 27 points. A four goal second quarter was the difference, as they went on to kick seven goals to three in what should give the girls plenty of confidence ahead of the finals series.
M. Hogg stood out for Aquinas, contributing three crucial goals to their final score, while H. Spicer added two more to the tally. M. Dargan and L. McHugh also made valuable contributions with their goals. Old Yarra Cobras fought hard throughout the game, but they couldn’t match Aquinas’ intensity. P. Cula-Reid, A. Murray, and T. Limburg scored their team’s goals.
Monash Blues demonstrated their dominance with a convincing victory over Richmond Central. Monash controlled the game from the beginning, building a solid lead and maintaining their advantage until the final siren.
E. Draffin and N. Newman led the scoring for Monash, each contributing a goal. A. Purtill, S. Bingham, and A. Hansen played pivotal roles in their team’s success, delivering standout performances.
Despite their best efforts, Richmond Central struggled to gain momentum, managing only one goal for the match. E. Seymour-Pessah scored their lone goal, showcasing resilience in the face of a tough opponent.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers put on a dominant display against Mazenod, securing a convincing victory. The Tigers controlled the game right from the start, preventing Mazenod from gaining any foothold.
M. Pearson was the standout performer for the Tigers, scoring three goals and playing a pivotal role in their team’s success. M. Tilley and M. Wilson added two goals each, showcasing their scoring prowess.
Despite their efforts, Mazenod OC struggled to find their rhythm on offense, failing to score a goal. St Bedes/Mentone’s solid defence and organized attack proved to be too much to handle.
Brunswick emerged victorious in a tightly contested match against nearby rivals North Brunswick. Despite the low-scoring affair, the match was filled with intensity and determined efforts from both sides, as is always the case in this match-up.
K. Sullivan played a crucial role for Brunswick, contributing two goals to their final tally. N. Kingi and A. Ross added one goal each, helping their team secure the victory.
M. Bentley scored North Brunswick’s lone goal, displaying their determination to compete against a strong opponent. Despite the result, both teams showcased their skills and resilience, making for an engaging contest.
Two rounds remain in the home & away season, with the top four already set and those teams looking to build ahead of the business end of the season.

And then there were four: Vultures demolish Mazenod to secure finals spot
Round 16 of the Premier C Men’s competition has solidified the four teams that will compete in the finals. However, the specific order of these top 4 teams remains uncertain with two rounds remaining.
The standout match of the week turned out to be a complete blowout, as the Parkdale Vultures dominated Mazenod, securing their spot in the finals and eliminating Mazenod from contention.
Mazenod had a dismal outing, failing to pose a threat throughout the day. The Vultures steadily expanded their lead at every interval of the game, ultimately emerging victorious with a commanding 62-point lead. Josh Manning and Jarrod Peake each scored three goals for Parkdale in the victory.
Mazenod will lament the missed opportunity, as their season has concluded in an incredibly disappointing manner. On the contrary, the Vultures have extended their impressive winning streak to six matches, confirming their position in the finals with a likely 4th place finish.
The Vultures have demonstrated that they shouldn’t be dismissed from contention, with their victories over formidable opponents highlighting them as one of the most in-form teams of the competition, along with Old Camberwell.
As Parkdale heads into their bye week on a high note, they’ll be met by Old Camberwell on the other side. This sets the stage for an exciting matchup just one week away from the finals.
Speaking of Old Camberwell, they have asserted their dominance over the competition with a significant 22-point victory against Old Ivanhoe. Despite holding only an 8-point lead at three-quarter time, Old Camberwell exhibited control throughout the day.
Impressively, eleven of their twenty-two players contributed at least one goal, highlighting their teamoriented and dominant approach.
The outcome is a major setback for Old Ivanhoe, as securing a top 2 finish has become an uphill battle. They now trail behind second-placed PEGS by one game. Fortunately for them, a showdown in the final round against PEGS could potentially determine the second-place finish.
Meanwhile, Old Camberwell is just one victory away from securing a minor premiership; a highly likely outcome as they face second-to-last Marcellin in the next round.
PEGS easily handled Marcellin this week, securing an 11-goal victory as they strive to solidify their top 2 finish. Jack Fenner’s exceptional performance was evident as he scored 5 goals in the convincing win.
Marcellin remains just one win ahead of the bottom, occupying the 8th spot on the 9-team ladder. Their primary focus now seems to be avoiding relegation, with the bottom team heading to Division 1 for the 2024 season.
Old Carey battled Hampton Rovers in a low-scoring affair in the wet at Carey Sports Complex. The Rovers held a slight advantage at the main break and led by 5 points at the final change in what was a real arm wrestle.

With a league-wide bye scheduled for the upcoming weekend, the next round will test three of the top 4 teams against weaker opponents in crucial must-win games. Old Camberwell, PEGS, and Old Ivanhoe all face these challenges with Parkdale having the week off.

Women’s Football Strategy Survey
The VAFA has committed to having in place a long-term growth and development strategy for women’s football in time for the 2024 season as part of a key activity of the VAFA Strategic Plan.
Players, coaches and clubs involved with the VAFA women’s competition have been asked (via email) to complete a survey on a number of shared themes that have been raised from the VAFA community as well as from the VAFA Women’s Football Advisory Group.
Data and results from the surveys will be shared publicly with the VAFA community and will ultimately help shape and define the final strategy.

Congratulations to Olivia Crowe from Glen Eira AFC for being named Carruthers Executive Coach of the Month. Olivia was nominated by David Walter, Glen Eira AFC Vice President/Secretary.
David shared that “After an incredibility challenging 2022 season, Olivia has managed to grow our Senior Women’s playing list in 2023. This has been achieved by providing a welcoming environment that encourages development and is driving the team towards success.”
Australian Venue Co. Volunteer of the Month - July
Congratulations to Michael Tarrant from Old Carey Grammarians for being named Australian Venue Co. Volunteer of the Month. Michael the current President, also the Equipment Manager, and Women’s Liaison Officer was nominated by club Secretary Sam Hassett.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Sophie Barnetson (Bulleen Templestowe)
The VAFA congratulates Sophie Barnetson from Bulleen Templestowe Amateur Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 16 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Sophie is nominated after her valiant performance on the weekend in a tough match that earned her a spot in the best, kicking 1 of the 2 goals scored for the day.
What the club said:
Coach, John Mustafa said: “Sophie has worked extremely hard to improve, and her determination and never give up approach has paid dividends. A footballer you want on your side and want to coach.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Jack Ferraro (St Bedes/Mentone Tigers)
The VAFA congratulates Jack Ferraro from St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, who has received the Men’s Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 16. Jack has been building an impressive resume throughout his debut year in the seniors, which crescendoed in a dominant 4-goal, best on ground performance, that no doubt helped to get his side over the line against Fitzroy.
What the club said:
Still only an 18-year-old Jack Ferraro has had a huge influence at the Tigers this year culminating in a 4-goal, best on ground performance in the important win against Fitzroy last weekend.
Jack has played every game in the Seniors this year and for one so young has a very cool head on his shoulders as he goes about his football.
Jack spends plenty of time in the midfield and roaming across the half forward line and is very dangerous near goals. He with his young teammates have formed an integral part of St Bedes’ climb up the Ladder into finals contention over the past 6 weeks.
A worthy nominee for this award.

Wayward Bears down Ivanhoe, as Lions just hanging onto fourth spot
Oakleigh vs Therry Penola
The Krushers took on the in-form Therry Penola at W.A Scammell Reserve and played out one of the games of the round the first term, which was shown to be very high pressure with both teams eager to score.
Jarred Egglestone once again asserting his dominance being a big presence for the Lions, whilst Aaron Clock showed why he is the competition’s best forward, booting four classy majors; and just one step closer to earning the leading goal kicker award. The Krushers bounced back with five majors in the second, really taking the game away from the Lions, maintaining second spot on the ladder.
Kew vs Ivanhoe
Ivanhoe hosted the Kew Bears on a rainy Saturday afternoon, with the home ground advantage unfortunately delivering no apparent leverage. Despite the wet weather conditions, the Bears were able to get in front early on and carry that lead throughout the four quarters.
They secured the 4 points, however their 16 behinds proved costly in what could have been a percentage boosting win. There inaccuracy overtime has potentially cost them a spot in finals. In a tough slog, Marcel Moran led from the front all day for the Hoers, finishing the day as best on ground with a goal to his name, while Lachlan James was best on for the Bears in a classy 2-goal performance.
A crucial five goal to one second term set the Bears in good stead to see out the game. However, there inability to get the ball through the big sticks after the main break opened the window for the Hoers. Ivanhoe could not claw their way back quite enough, with Kew coming away with the 23-point victory.
UHS vs West Brunswick
UHS-VU put together a consistent 4-quarter performance against West Brunswick as they continue to gain momentum heading towards September, biting at the heels of fourth-place Therry Penola.
The Magpies had more scoring shots in the opening term, however, it was UHS who were more accurate in front of goal and took a lead early. Jeffrey Fox led the charge for UHS-VU, supported by Matthew Mallia who kicked four majors for the day. The Magpies did have fighters with the likes of Bill Irving showing his skill and composure under pressure, with a best on for the pies and 2 key goals. But it wasn’t to be, with UHS coming away with a handy 20-point win.
Prahran vs Old Peninsula
The Two Blues hosted the Pirates at D.W Lucas Reserve and Prahran were able to get the momentum kicking four early goals. It was an onslaught of goals from the Two Blues and the Pirates just couldn’t catch a break.
Craig Sanders and Ben Williamson were two of the stalwarts for the Pirates. And at the other end, Matty Clifford and Rory Broadie slotted four apiece to set their team apart. Prahran made late inroads to boost their percentage, which could be important come crunch time.
Glen Eira vs Preston
Glen Eira came away with a solid win after taking on the Preston Bullants at Packer Park. The first term was rightfully very contested with ten points in it with the gallant Bullants trying to expose the Glen Eira defence. Rory Howard and Luke Green showed exactly why they are integral to the Bullants line up.
The Glen Eira Gryphons have put together a season that highlights exactly why they are a force to be reckon with, and in most games have been able to kick away and be a good arm’s length from their opposition. Tim Johnston was once again a vocal player up forward, ably supported by Tarkyn Isaacs with three majors that helped the Gryphons get over the line.

Melburnians earn double chance with final round victory
It was the final round of the home and away season for division one women’s on Saturday, as Old Melburnians moved into second spot ahead of the Finals series.
Finishing the season in 5th place on the ladder, Old Geelong ended the year on a high, with a 47-point win over Old Xaverians
Both teams brought an offensive game style early with Old Geelong kicking four majors in the first term, to go with Old Xaverians’ two. After the first break, both teams tightened their defence, but Old Geelong proved far too strong for Old Xaverians, adding another seven goals to their final score, while Old Xaverians only managed one more goal for the day.
Vicky Tan was clear best on, slotting five goals for Old Geelong. For Old Xaverians, Tahyrn Mant summarised her season with another team best performance.
Old Melburnians have earnt themselves the double chance in finals, after defeating Old Camberwell Grammarians at Elsternwick Park.
Old Camberwell asked a serious question of the Omlettes, as they trailed by only a goal at three-quarter time. However, Melburnians dug deep and managed to score the only goal of the final term to extend their lead to 13 points, proving themselves as a top two side.
Clare Fraser and Sally Peers led the charge for Old Melburnians, while Alexandra Herrington and Olivia Honore did their best in attempt to get Old Camberwell home.
Hawthorn AFC have ended the year with just one win, having fallen to Old Haileybury by 46 points.
Hawthorn started well, registering two goals in the first term, while Old Haileybury kicked three. The second term was a completely different story, however, with Old Haileybury booting four unanswered goals. Hawthorn found some composure at half time and managed to outscore Old Haileybury in the third, but they were unable to hold on in the fourth, allowing Old Haileybury to extend the margin by another 17 points.
Laura Castleden starred for the Hawks, ending the day with a goal as well. Serene Vudiniabola snuck four goals for Old Haileybury, while Bridget Hanrahan was their best.
Beaumaris showed why they are the deserving minor premiers with a convincing win over Old Brighton.
What had been anticipated to be the match of the round turned out to be somewhat anticlimactic, with Old Brighton only managing one goal for the entirety of the game, which came off the boot of Kitty Smyth in the first term.
Beaumaris were able to extend their lead at each break, ending the day with a final margin of 44 points.
Cat O’Brien proved invaluable again, best on for Old Brighton for the fourth time this season. Ashley van Rooyen was best for Beaumaris, while Simone Marinelli and Genevieve Gori showed class in front of the big sticks, kicking three goals each.
The loss caused Old Brighton to fall out of the top two, giving up their right to a finals double chance.
Hampton Rovers ended their season early with a forfeit in their final match against Marcellin OC.
Finals time has arrived, with the promise of two exciting matches on the weekend.
Old Brighton will play Marcellin OC in an elimination final, with the winner progressing to the preliminary final. The two sides have met twice already this season, with the respective home side coming out victorious each time.
Old Brighton will need to bounce back in a big way, after their disappointing loss to Beaumaris on the weekend. Marcellin’s last loss also came at the hands of Beaumaris, back in Round 12.
Meanwhile, Beaumaris and Old Melburnians will face each other in a battle to secure the first spot in the 2023 grand final.
The Omlettes will be looking to build on their Round 6 efforts where they fell just one goal short of the Sharks, while the Sharks will just want to keep playing their brand of footy, that no team has been able to overcome so far this year.

Friars fight for fourth
There were comfortable wins across the board in all bar-one match, with the Friday night thriller delivering a 4-point nailbiter. The ever-comfortable ladder leaders, Parkside, were taken down a notch in one of the upsets of the season, with Brunswick now hot on their heels.
Round 16 kicked off in prime-time fashion, as Bulleen Templestowe and Aquinas battled it out under lights on Friday night, and it did not disappoint. The ball was shared around evenly with both sides heading into their first huddle with 5 scoring shots. But it was Aquinas who held a handy 5-point lead scoring 3.2 to the Bullants 2.3.
Things ramped up in the second with strong output from both sides. Aquinas the more accurate of the two; nonetheless, scores were level at the main break. Jaycob Baxter (3) lead the way for Aquinas in front of goal with Josh Glennie, best on. As for the Bullants, they were kept in it by the ever-reliable Corey Sheils who kicked 3 majors for the day. Harry Vogler was their unsuspecting star, who for the first time this season earned himself best on ground recognition.
The Bullants hit the front for the first time in the match, with a narrow 10-point margin, as they headed toward the final siren. Aquinas are to be commended for their valiant effort with a 2.2 final term to claw their way back, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Bullants claimed a 4-point victory.
As for the South Melbourne Districts, they hadn’t come up against St Mary’s Salesian since Round 1 and were no doubt looking to continue their winning form against the struggling side. The Bloods got on top early and were able to extend their lead at every break to win by 64 points.
Star forward, Jamie Brooker, put on an absolute masterclass in front of the big sticks, slotting an equal personal-best 9 goals for the afternoon, propelling himself up the ranks on the Division 2 leading goal kicker tally. Sam Bradford and Zaron Smith were also key contributors to the winning margin with 2 apiece.
Henry Wong shone for the Saints despite chasing all day, with Jack Elliston their leading goal scorer. The Saints will be looking to get back on the winners list this coming weekend as they come up against the Bullants.
Continuing through Division 2, Brunswick went in as home-ground favourites when they hosted Old Paradians on Saturday afternoon. Parade took advantage of being the underdogs and came out all guns blazing with nothing to lose. They maintained a lead throughout the first half, heading into the break with a 2-point buffer.
With a top-two finals spot on the line for the Nobs, they turned things around in third and fourth, with a 10-goal second half. Parade’s heads were spinning as the tempo picked up, booting an imprecise 3.6 to round out the day.
Michael Boundy finished on 3 goals for Parade, while the Nobs had 10 different contributors in front of goals, steered by Angus Coverdale with 3 majors to his name.
Koonung Park hosted a matchup between the Old Yarra Cobras and MHSOB. The last time these two sides met, things were all tied up ending in a draw. With both sides looking for 4 points, this was sure to be an interesting clash.
The Cobras are well and truly in finals contention and proved exactly how they got there with another cohesive team effort, led by 4 multiple goal kickers. Lewis Mitchell was best on for the Cobras in a classy 4-quarter effort. William Kruyt earned himself a best on ground accolade for the day, in just his second senior game for the year for MHSOB.
The final score line read 79-32 in favour of the Cobras, a win that secures them third position with two rounds remaining.
As Parkside have all but secured a minor premiership, at this late stage of the season, they are looking fairly daunting to come up against. Whitefriars had other plans and weren’t looking to just roll over, but rather delivered an upset for the ages, that keeps themselves in the finals race. The Friars, currently sitting in fifth, are only behind South Melbourne Districts by a narrow percentage.
Perhaps Parkside are tiring as we enter the pointy end of the season, as they couldn’t halt the Friar’s early onslaught to take a 20-point lead at half time. From then on it was an uphill battle to get back into the game, a feat for which they fell short. The Friars put on one of their standout performances spearheaded once again by Samuel Kieseker (5) and Daniel Wood (3). Kieseker earning himself best on for the Friars, while Benedict Douglas starred for Parkside. While that wraps up the week that was, we are forging right ahead to Round 17; the penultimate round of the home and away season, with a top 4 yet to be locked in. The Whitefriars will need to carry their momentum from a win against the top of the table as they face another challenge in Brunswick at home.
Keeping with big clashed, third and fourth will do battle as Old Yarra Cobras travel to face South Melbourne Districts. Other matches include St Mary’s Salesian taking on Bulleen Templestowe, and MHSOB will host Old Paradians. Rounding out the weekend will be first placed Parkside, hosting tenth placed Aquinas at Pitcher Park.

Wattle Park secure a spot in finals with two rounds to go
Finals Fever is ablaze for four of our Division Three outfits, with only the question of where they’ll sit at the season’s end left to be resolved. I wrote last week that mathematically the race for the final position in the top four was up for grabs. However, after a dominant win from Wattle Park and a loss to Power House, it is now air-tight, with only the order of the top 4 up for debate.
For Power House, the task of keeping their season alive was always going to be a tough challenge as they faced second-place Hawthorn at home.
Power House had a strong start, managing to go toe to toe with one of the league giants, carrying just a 10-point deficit into the first break.
After that, however, it was Hawthorn and their consistently dominant forwards who stole the spotlight, with Will Meehan (6) and Justin Raiti (4) propelling themselves into the first and second positions respectively on the goal kickers’ list this season.
Hawthorn’s strength lies in their ability to push their opponents to the limit throughout the season, maximizing their percentage heading into a tight battle for a top-two position and a double chance in the finals at season’s end.
Hawthorn eventually emerged as 63-point victors.
Next up was the clash between Richmond Central and Swinburne University, with a victory holding great significance for both sides.
For Central, it was a chance to distance themselves from the possibility of slipping into a bottom-two position by the end of the season. On the other hand, for Swinburne, it was an opportunity to breathe life into their quest to escape that position.
The game kicked off with energy and pace from Richmond who have had a competitive season, managing to keep Swinburne scoreless in the first quarter while also amassing 28 points themselves.
As the game progressed, Swinburne came to life, mitigating any major damage to their percentage with Tyson Wiegold and Daniel Abbott shining for the home side. Meanwhile, Richmond Central’s Lachie Conboy kicked three goals, benefitting from Daniel McLinden’s tireless work rate.
Central secured a 53-point victory, settling comfortably with 6 wins for the season.
As previously mentioned, it was a crucial match for Wattle Park as they faced La Trobe University, with a win guaranteeing them a spot in the finals for 2023 after narrowly missing out on a position last season. The animals wasted no time in advancing the ball, scoring 7 times in the first half to put pressure on La Trobe right from the start.
Despite a valiant effort, La Trobe couldn’t quite match the inside ball work of the Animals, who are hitting their stride at the perfect time of the year. They clinched a 67-point victory over the University side.
When it comes to the finals, there will be no easy matchup against Wattle Park, as they aim to cause an upset early in the Division 3 finals campaign.
The final match of the round was undoubtedly the most captivating one, with 3rd-placed Canterbury taking on table-toppers Elsternwick in a game that now carries significant implications for the finals.
If you needed any indication of what the Cobras are capable of, look no further than their first quarter, where they scored a remarkable 56 points against the topof-the-table Elsternwick, putting them under immense pressure, a situation rarely encountered in 2023.

Swinburne University: T. Wiegold, D. Abbott, N. Schulz, N. McKenna, B. Murphy, T. Wood
While the first quarter belonged to the Cobras, Elsternwick managed to turn the pressure into an advantage, stifling the Cobras’ forward line and regaining the lead by half-time.
The second half of the game at Holmes/Todd Oval was a memorable affair, marked by back-and-forth exchanges. Players like Spencer Hankin for Elsternwick stepped up as major game changers, finishing with 4 goals. In response, Nick Szabo surprised as the leading scorer for the Cobras, netting 3 goals, while Elsternwick’s defenders managed to contain the perpetually dangerous Tom Lowden.
In the end, Elsternwick held onto the victory by a tight 9-point margin over the Cobras, pushing them back to third place based on percentage, with only two rounds of football remaining.
With Round 17 on the horizon, it’s hard not to be captivated by the race for a double chance in the finals. All eyes are on the remaining two games for Hawthorn and Canterbury, as percentage might be the sole factor determining their positions come the end of the season.

Box Hill North win big as the Tigers turn tides with triumph
The first match of the round saw Albert Park take on North Brunswick in what possibly could’ve been a finals preview. Both teams started slow out of the gates with a combined 3 goals kicked for the quarter. When the first siren sounded, the Bulls held a narrow lead of 7 points. The foot was definitely on the accelerator in the second, with both teams doubling their score.
The third quarter is usually the point in a match that the Bulls stampede away with the win, but full credit to the Falcons who kept the quarter even, only allowing 3 goals from the Bulls whilst managing to kick 3 of their own. After failing to escape the talons of the Falcons in the third, the Bulls were able to find their way out in the fourth quarter and run away with the game, kicking 2 unanswered goals and leaving the home of the Falcons with a crucial 34-point victory.
Jack Lee had 2 goals for the Falcons. Matt Pihkanen, Joshua Beets and Brett Tottenham also featured in the goal kickers for the Falcons. For the Bulls, Jake Horwood and Andrew Ramzy kicked 3 goals each, individual goal-kickers included Zac Dicianni, Tai Cameron Sardone and Luke Russell. In the best for the Falcons were Alistair Lupo, Jack Amies and Paul Hutchins. In the best for the Bulls were Spencer Zahra, Simon Woodward and Marcus Watt.
The Falcons will now face Box Hill North in another tough matchup and potentially another finals preview. The Bulls will make the trip down to North Dandenong to take on the Tigers.
The second match of the round saw St Johns take on Masala where the winner would be at a major advantage when it comes to the division’s ladder. The Tigers who often get off to a slow start, managed to get the upper hand over their rivals early with a 3-goal to 1 first quarter, led by key defender turned key forward Jake Dunkley, resulting in a 14-point Tiger lead as the quarter time siren sounded. The second quarter saw the JOCs start their engines, however with 3 goals, their vehicle wasn’t
quick enough to capture an escaping Tigers vehicle that was able to put 4 goals onto the board and extend their lead out to 24 points as both teams went to their halftime huddle.
The third quarter saw the JOCs fight their way back into the game and even saw them win the quarter as they were able to kick 3 goals whilst only allowing 2 goals from the Tigers to reduce the Tigers lead all the way down to 8 points. The stakes were huge with a win going to greatly benefit both sides’ seasons. The fourth quarter was riddled with contests, however, the Tigers were able to dig deep and play ‘strong and bold’ as they were able to keep enough energy in the tank to overrun the JOCs with a 4-goal to 0 quarter to get an important win away from home over their crosstown rivals. This win is crucial for the Tigers as it now puts them 1 win ahead of 5th (St Johns) and 1 win behind 3rd (Albert Park).
Goal kickers for the JOCs included Liam Salisbury, Daniel Cattolico, Cameron Cato, Kailum Newland, Michael Horton, Nicholas Terrill and Guy Chuol. Jake Dunkley found his way up forward for the Tigers and capitalised on the opportunity with 5 majors. Brandon Kelly (3) and Decarne brothers Matt and Luke (2 goals each) were the other multiple-goal kickers for the Tigers. In the best for the JOCs were Nicholas Terrill, Matthew Bennett and Jed Dexter. In the best for the Tigers were Harkireth Calais, Jake Dunkley and Karan Singh.
The JOCs will go on to face the Sharks, looking to get back on the winner’s list. The Tigers, on the other hand, will like to continue this winning feeling as they face division leaders North Brunswick.
The final match of the round saw Eley Park take on Box Hill North in what was set to be a fairly unpredictable contest. The Demons got the immediate jump over the Sharks in the first quarter as they were able to put 15 scoring shots on the board whilst only allowing 2 scoring shots from the Sharks. As the quarter-time siren sounded, it was the Demons that held a 38-point lead over the Sharks. The second quarter saw the Demons once again
continue the dominance over the Sharks as the Demons were able to add on another 4 goals whilst keeping the Sharks goalless, extending the lead out to 63 points at halftime.
The Demons then took a leaf out of the Bulls’ booklet as they put together a big third quarter. The Demons were able to pile on 7 goals in the quarter, however, the Sharks had a big quarter of their own with 4 goals. After their major quarter, the Demons were able to extend their lead to 84 points as both teams went into their final huddles of the game. In the final quarter, the Demons were able to continue their goal-kicking ways with 6 majors. The Sharks also managed to find the goals with 3 goals of their own. The final half of the Demons created too much of an impact as they were able to run out winners by 107 points, getting a major win at the right time of the season.
Up forward for the Sharks, multiple goal kickers included Tom Johnston (2) and Joel Kennedy (2). Kyle Hocking was the leading goal scorer on the day with 6 majors for the Demons. Other multiple-goal kickers included David Edwards (3), Marcus Lorkin (3), Michael Trkujia (2), Alexander Williams (2) and Blake Williams (2). In the best for the Sharks were Alex Penkethman, Thomas Cherny and Joel Kennedy. In the best for the Demons were Kyle Hocking, Jonathan Tommasoni and Samuel Roberts.
Eley Park will look to get their second win in three weeks as they take on the JOCS, while the Demons will host Albert Park.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Tom Lowden (Canterbury)
Heralding from the rural town of Dookie, Tom Lowden has his fair share of knocks and bruises on his way to 150 games with the Canterbury Football Club. Originally recruited in 2011 as a Centre Half Back, Tom made a name for himself in the EFNL as a tough dour defender.
After a couple of lean Canterbury years, Tom made a few detours via other clubs before eventually returning mid season in 2015 as a forward this time round and proving to be imperative in the cobras first senior flag in the VAFA. Since then Tom has played permanently up forward and is renown for his strong overhead marks and is a difficult matchup on any day. Canterbury is very proud of Tom and are hoping to celebrate in style.
Ryan Schroder (St Bernards)
Huge congrats to Ryan Schroder on his 200th VAFA game. A star St Bernards Junior, ‘Shrodes’ progressed through U19 ranks making his Senior debut way back in 2006. A tough on-baller with a raking left foot and great goal sense ‘Schrodes’ was a mainstay in the Senior line up for many years. In recent seasons, injury, work and Covid curtailed his appearances, but it’s been great to see him back helping out his mates in the Thirds and chalk up his 200th along the way. Well done, Schrodes!

SKOB make their intentions clear as finals approach
Last weekend was a relatively low scoring round for this division. A possible sign of fatigue from VAFA’s young troupe. A series of predictable results are the main takeaway from round 15. Each top four side walked away with a resounding and comprehensive victory. The top four appears to almost be set, though with fifth all the way down to eighth holding the same number of points, there could be a late dash to chase down an illustrious finals position.
Caulfield Grammarians def. Old Brighton by 9 points.
A very classy and entertaining affair took place at Glen Huntly Oval on Saturday. An inform Caulfield couldn’t shake the hard running Brighton until the final term. The margin remained within 10 points for the duration of the contest, illustrating the competitive standard of this section.
Caulfield are truly peaking at the right time of the season. This late season charge has all but cemented them a place in the finals as they look to dethrone reigning premiers Old Xavierians. Even though Caulfield only won this encounter by 9 points, they look composed and polished for the duration of the contest. They are a team that utilise their home deck with finesse that opposition teams struggle to match. C. Cooke slotted 3 in a best on ground performance.
Brighton now sits second last on the ladder. Though this can be viewed as an unfair representation of their season. They’ve strung together some solid performances and have a range of talented players, though consistency remains a glaring issue. I have no doubt they’ll rebound next year. C. Hathway & G. Hill combined for 8 majors in a monster effort down forward.
Caulfield will travel to Crawford Oval to play Uni Blues in the round 16. Brighton faces SBMT at Mentone.
Williamtown CYMS def by. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 42 points.
SBMT have proved they’re not just here to make up the numbers. They faced one of the VAFA’s biggest road trips and travelled across the bridge to Williamstown. The CYs inefficiency in front of goal was detrimental to the end result.
Williamstown continues to rely on the dependable core of N. Sayers, A. Martinez, T. Assafiri, C. Brown, A. Fernandes & Z. Provest but were just unable to get over the line. They now sit in 7th with 7 wins.
SBMT have impressed in season 2023. Their first season in U19 Premier in several years came with slight apprehension. Would they be able to compete on a consistent basis with a substantially younger team? They’ve answered that question in resounding fashion. Their talent across every board continues to impress and that was no
ROUND 16 TIPS
exception in round 15. J. Behnk slotted 7 in his return from suspension whilst Z. Winter was impressive holding down the fort at fullback. The CYs will take on Old Scotch in RD16. SBMT will host Old Brighton in the primetime slot at Brindisi St. De La Salle def by. St. Kevins by 82 points.
De La remains in finals contention but will be feeling a dip in confidence after a comprehensive defeat at the hands of SKOB. They only converted 3 goals for the duration of the contest, credit to St Kevin’s excellent defensive structure. De La Salle will do all in their power for a 2023 finals berth.
De La will be disappointed to have underutilised their home ground advantage. They remained scoreless in the opening term, letting SKOB assert their supremacy from the outset. J. Harper, K. Rossiter, E. Hele, J. Miller, E. Macbeth & A. Liakakos were all impressive in a losing side. Anything less than a grand final appearance will be a disappointment for SKOB in 2023. They’ve had a terrific season and affirmed their dominance in this uncompromising display. SKOB had multiple goal scorers, showcasing their talent up forward. O. Gill, B. Bryan, T. Davidson, G. Delimitrou, A. Leiner & M. Adams were best afield for SKOB.
St Kevin’s will be banking on a win against St Bernards to comfortably retain top spot, while De La will host Old Xaverians at the Dairy Bell.
Old Scotch def. University Blues by 12 points.
A very tightly contested affair at Camberwell saw Old Scotch leave victorious over Uni. Two very cohesive teams on the fringe of finals thrived on Saturday. Scotch led for majority of the contest, but Uni aren’t to be underestimated in the coming weeks.
Old Scotch aren’t to be forgotten in the race for finals. H. Byrne-Jones, J. Phillips, J. Harker, S. Norman, G. Kennedy & F. Leeton were all outstanding. There was also a plethora of goalkickers, a sign of an unselfish and unified team.
Uni will be disappointed to have dropped this game but still sit 5th on the ladder. They’ll need to win over the next few weeks to chase a top four spot. T. O’’Brien, A. Lord, H. Meggitt, H. Williams, O. Williams & J. Ryan were admirable in a losing side.
Uni will face an inform Caulfield this weekend. Scotch will play the CYs. St. Bernards def by. Old Xaverians by 97 points.
The Xavs enjoyed a percentage boost against St Bernards last weekend. Xavier possesses the healthiest percentage in the section but still find themselves in 2nd place. St Bernards continue to show up but have been drained of their confidence and belief as the season has progressed.
St Bernards were only able to register 19 points for the duration of the contest. F. Shannon, L. Bugeja, T. Lowrie, D. Restuccia, A. Ryan & L. Hallett were all admirable in a tough loss.
Xavier displayed their depth and efficiency in this match. Their ability to steamroll through this St Bernards team is a good sugar hit on the eve of finals. W. MacIsaac manhandled the opposition with 6 goals and a best on ground performance.
Old Xaverians will face De La this week. St Bernards travel to T H King Oval to play SKOB.
