The traditional no alcohol policy around the ground on match days is all geared to ensuring that VAFA community crowds are the best behaved in community football. We are not sure whether this is a case of people coming out of COVID after a long absence from sport, but metropolitan leagues are reporting greater numbers of incidents involving poor player and spectator behaviour. That is something we don’t want to witness in the IVAFA.remind all Clubs that there is a VAFA requirement for their players and all associated with their Club to abide by the VAFA Player Code of Conduct and the VAFA Spectator Code of Conduct. Umpires and match day officials are on notice to report any breaches of these codes which will be dealt with in a serious manner.

As we head into a weekend with another six Premierships up for grabs in Men’s Thirds, I wish all the teams well and trust all games will be played in the right VAFA spirit – For the Love of the Game.

How many of you have spent this week on the VAFA’s Ladder Predictor? Don’t lie to yourself either. We all have been. There are 10 William Buck Premier matches remaining in the home and away season for 2022, five of them this weekend that are And,salivating.weare ever so closer than we were at the start of the season to knowing the makeup of the top two, the top four and the relegation zone. This weekend pins four of the top five against one-another. A team gunning for nine wins in a row plus a fight to stave off relegation. Sometimes I wish there were five of me, so I could be at every ground. Where I will be is at Elsternwick Park for the RSN Carnival Match of the Day Old Melburnians welcome Old Xaverians to VAFA HQ. If the match follows the path of their Round 3 encounter we’re set for another grandstand finish on Saturday afternoon. It’s a must win game for both sides. Old Xaverians must win to equal the 11 wins Old Melburnians are on. The percentage gap is significant, it will catapult them into the top four. Old Melburnians must win to stay in the top two with Old Brighton to come in the final round. This has all the machinations of a “killa-dilla” as the great Kevin Bartlett would say. How can Old Xaverians counter the influence of Nick De Steiger in the ruck? Can Josh Freezer quell the influence of the X-factor Xavier Richards? Which Xav’s defender stops Jackson Paine? My ladder predictor has me leaning the way of Old Xaverians this weekend. But by the same margin as Round 3, 1 point. If you’re not there on Saturday, tune in to hear all the action. St Kevin’s have one hand on the minor Premiership, they’re one win away from it. They won’t want to let up with a fortnight to go before September. Old Brighton are no easybeats at any point of the season, at any ground. What can Greg Hutchison conjure up amongst his troops? They must win themselves to not only stay alive in the race for the top two, but to keep their season going. A slip up here, an Old Xaverians and Collegians win and they’re potentially going into Round 18 in fifth spot.

The last four matches between these two sides have been absolute belters. Tight, contested, hard footy. Which the Tonners relish. Final margins have been 4 points, 3 points, 3 points and 3 points. 3-1 is the head-to-head battle in favour of Old Brighton. Does past history count for anything on Saturday, can they bust open the St Kevin’s press? If Will Lewis plays, does he get off the chain? How do you stop the Kings of T H King?

The ladder predictor would like to pick Old Brighton to completely throw chaos into the mix. But, St Kevin’s at home by (the average margin) 3 points on Saturday is the box I’ve ticked. Collegians are looking at nine on the trot at the Harry Trott this Saturday. St Bernard’s awaits them. The Snowdogs were the team that felt the wrath of Collegians when this run started. Wouldn’t Paul Groves love to walk off Albert Park being the man who stopped it. Last week, may have been the cattle prod the purple army needed. Coming away winners over University Blues by a point. It took a Dave Mirra masterclass to get them home but there were periods where they looked flat, out on their feet and Blues a step ahead. Jared Rivers would’ve been laser focused at training this week. All the hard work to get to this point counts for nothing if they let it slip on Saturday.

The Snowdogs have debuted two under 19’s in recent weeks, young boys getting a taste of senior footy and what’s expected at the level. It will hold them in good stead for the future. For now, the dominance of the Collegians midfield on Saturday will be too strong in my view. Kenny Ong, Sam Hibbins, Viv Michie, and perhaps, the best kept secret in footy - Freddie Sullivan. The percentage could become a factor. On my ladder predictor, it is. They need to win, and win big. Caulfield Grammarians will play William Buck Premier in 2023. They’re two games clear and percentage of relegation. University Blues however, must win. To shut out any noise if Old Trinity are to be successful over Old Scotch. The Fields have salvaged four wins this season from a very much up and down year.

Accurate predictions or clueless outlooks? You be the judge.

My ladder predictor has been locked in for Round 17. If it falls the way I’m thinking, we are set up for one helluva finish to the home and away season. But, it’s almost easier to pick 9 winners in the AFL, than it is to pick the 5 in William Buck NoPremier.matter what happens, and which way it goes, we’re just going to enjoy every second of it.

The only spot that is fully locked on my ladder predictor, and the Orthosport Victoria ladder is Old Scotch. No matter what results happen with the Cardinals in the next fortnight, they can’t move from sixth spot on the table. Does that mean Old Trinity has even more of a chance on Saturday? Jamie Cassidy-McNamara, in his debut season as coach of the T’s has seen it all. The highs of upset victories and a regulation one too, the lows of losses in close proximity and significant blowouts. He’s even experienced a lightning strike and a game postponed at half-time. Each week, he’s fronted up with a smile on his face, a new theme for his troops and still at Round 17, they’re mathematically alive to be playing in William Buck Premier in In2023.saying all of that my ladder predictor is leaning the way of Mark Gnatt’s troops and the Cardinals. What they’ve produced has been nothing short of sensational this year. If they finish the season with a 9-9 record, in sixth spot, while disappointing I’m sure internally that they’re not playing finals, it’s a progression from 2021 that many outside the club probably didn’t see coming.

Injuries to key players, inaccuracy in front of goal. An indifferent bounce of the ball throughout moments in games. It just hasn’t rolled out the way we all were hoping in the preseason. Uni Blues have had their own, well publicised battles. Internally, the vibe within the group is still upbeat. Despite the shattering finish to the game last weekend, they were up for the fight and were bitterly disappointed to come off the ground with a loss. Two games to go, against Caulfield they can shut the door on relegation completely. Then, they can potentially end Old Xaverians season in Round 18.

This week St Bedes/Mentone overpowered Williamstown as did the Uni Blacks over Old Carey. De La were crowed victors by 1 point in a final quarter showdown and a twilight match saw Old Haileybury defeat Fitzroy. Only two rounds to go in the home and away season and some changes to the top four are still on the horizon. De La, SBMT and AJAX all sit one game out of the eight. Another clutch victory for De La, while Tigers add 4 more points to their record

In a nail-biting finish down at Gary Smorgon Oval, De La Salle were crowned victorious over AJAX. De La begun this game on the front foot, leading by 4-points after the first term. Ryan O’Meara got going early, running hard at the ball all day. The second quarter saw Adam Caplan and Ben Krongold lift with their run and carry providing AJAX with a 17-point lead. Amongst the 9 goal scorers were Reece Israel and Jordan Cohen, working hard through the Jackers forward line and securing themselves two goals each. This seesawing affair was not over yet as De La took the lead after the 3rd quarter break. Antony Forato and Hugh Nicholson continued their hard work up forward, ultimately leading to their 1-point victory. This loss sees AJAX drop down to 7th on the ladder while De La jump up to 5th. De La’s round 17 battle against Williamstown could be interesting for their finals campaign, while AJAX face a tough battle against Old

St Bedes/Mentone found all the answers with Michael Barnes and Caleb Lewis kicking 4 and 3 respectively. In the end, CY couldn’t catch the Tigers with a final score of 11.10-76 to 17.14-116 falling the way of SBMT. The Tigers are not out of the finals race just yet, with the ability to snatch fourth sport still on the cards, although they will have to pull off an upset win against Beaumaris next week. As for Williamstown, they will come up against De La. Having beaten them by 5 points earlier in the year, they are certainly a chance to snatch another four points.

First on the ladder were up against last this week as Uni Blacks were victorious over Old Carey by 64 points. Uni Blacks got off to an uncharacteristically slow start as the Panthers were in front by 1 point. This lead was short-lived as the Blackers responded quickly. Matt Grocott and Lachlan Knight’s three goals each helped force the Uni Blacks to a 27-point lead.

The second half saw the Blackers stretch this margin to 44-points as Henry Bennett and Nick Hey’s ball movement made the Panthers pay. Riley Thompson and Anthony Caminiti made sure Old Carey didn’t go down without a fight with a final score of 6.11-47 to the Uni Blacks 15.21-11. The Uni Blacks will enjoy a bye next week while Old Carey will host Fitzroy at the Carey Sports Complex. With percentage coming into play in the top four, if Old Carey can lift their defensive efforts next week, they will certainly rattle the Roy’s finals race.

Old Haileybury worked hard to fight off the Roys as their margin grew to 70- points in the second half. The plucky Northern Bullants lost no admirers at EE Gunn Reserve, but were just a little outclassed by an Ormond side keen to finish a difficult season on a positive note, and possibly make a late run at fourth place. Ormond kicked six goals to three in the first quarter to establish a foothold on the match, but Preston fought as if their lives depended on it in the middle quarters to trail by just 19 points at the last change. The class of the Ormond forward line carried them home in the last quarter, kicking seven goals without blemish to record a 43-point victory to show that they may be coming from well back, but they aren’t going away any time soon. Tom Buckley and Jeremy Simon kicked three goals each for Ormond, with Zach Benson excellent for the brown and blue.

Still all to play for in Premier C with September looming

The battle between the top two sides proved to be a bit of a fizzer, whilst the picture in the lower half of the top four remained no clearer in round 19. Here’s what took place… The much-anticipated clash between the two top sides turned out to be little more than a training run for Monash, and probably handed them the minor premiership at the same time. Missing several key players plus their coach, Hampton Rovers did not have the cattle to put up a lot of resistance here. That’s not to take anything away from Monash Blues – they did what they had to do and did it with a style that justified their premiership favouritism. Monash kept Hampton scoreless in the first term, and had five goals on the board before Hampton troubled the scorers. When the game opened up in the second half it was the Blues that were able to take advantage, kicking nine goals in the second half whilst having their defences breached just the once to complete a resounding victory, although one that will tell us little about the September battles to come. Ned Gray and Max Coughlin did best for Hampton Rovers, who were no match for Nick Darling’s seven majors for Monash. Macgregor Cameron and James Flett were excellent for the high-flying Blues. Parkdale’s second half fadeout left them with a huge mountain to climb if they are to be successful in their late charge towards finals. They set up an eight-point half-time lead with a solid display in a game where defences held sway. Sadly for the Vultures they were only able to record three points in the second half as Mazenod jacked two goals in the third quarter and 1.6 in the last, which was enough to keep knocking at the door of the top four themselves. Mazenod cannot afford any slip-ups at this stage if they are to play in September, and the desperation that they showed in this match indicates that they will not give up the chase without one hell of a fight. Jack Sullivan was excellent in front of goal with three for Mazenod whilst livewire Nick Pascuzzi kicked two, and Mitchell Fewings was dominant around the ground. Lloyd Bailey and Liam Purcell kicked two goals each for Parkdale, for whom Charlie Yee continued his recent good form.

Two early Esubalew Ramsay goals proved to be a false dawn for UHS-VU, with the side only registering one more goal for the day. Old Geelong still have much to play for, and they were not to let this opportunity for a percentage boost to slip. They registered five first quarter goals to take a 24-point lead to the first break, and whilst they kicked inaccurately in the second term, this was only a temporary glitch. With Connor Dixon and Joe Griffiths leading the way in the front half with four goals each, Old Geelong kicked the only nine goals of the second half to run out victorious to the tune of 97 points. William Sloss and Jacob Jess were best afield for Old Geelong, whilst Ramsay and Ned CouperJohnston shone for the University.

Old Mentonians pulled victory from the jaws of defeat against Marcellin, having been behind from the middle of the second quarter and only securing victory right at the death. The Panthers started well enough, kicking four goals to two in the first stanza before Marcellin kicked the only four goals of the second quarter to seize the initiative heading into the main break. Old Mentonians reduced the margin from thirteen to seven in the third term but both sides still had all to play for in the final quarter. Marcellin kicked an early goal in the last term and it looked as though that would be enough, but two late goals from the Panthers saw the lead change decisively and the four points remained at Keysborough. Tom Morecroft was again instrumental in Old Mentonians’ win with three goals, with Stuart Harris and Lachlan Mirams their best. Marcellin had eight individual goal kickers, with Ry Elphinstone and Patrick Hamblin strong on the day.

PREMIER C – St Bedes/Mentone def. Parkdale In Premier C, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers finished the home and away year with just 96 points kicked against them, an average of 6.8 points per game. They came into the big dance on a 15 game winning streak, and were looking to complete the perfect season. Their opponents, Parkdale, know all about winning streaks, having risen up the ranks from Division 4 where they were 9-0 at the end of the 2021 abandoned season. After a very tight opening half where scores were locked at 1.1.7 apiece, it was SBMT who busted the game open and ran away after half time. Madi Wilson (2), and Brittini Donaldson (2) were the main culprits as part of the Tigers surge. Donaldson was named the best player on the ground in the Tigers 16th straight win to complete the perfect season.

While Lucy Morley was named best afield in the victory.

PREMIER B – Fitzroy def by. Old Scotch Old Scotch made the grand final from 4th position after a stirring last quarter full of goal highlights last week against Old Brighton. Fitzroy finished the season on top of the ladder and had beaten Old Scotch twice this season, by 6 points and 4 points.

It’s been three long years since we last awarded Premierships for Premier B to Division 3 Women’s. Over the weekend just gone we were able to recognise the feats and celebrate the seasons of five sections kickstarting a big month of celebrations with finals fever in the air.

The Cardinals were the only women’s team capable of claiming ‘back to back’ premierships, having defeated Old Brighton for the 2019 Division 1 title. And, they’ve come out on top against Fitzroy coming from behind with four goals in the second half to snatch victory from the Roys.

Two goals each to Millie Fraser-Smith and Alex Theodosi helped the Cardinals clinch the flag.

DIVISION 1 – Beaumaris def. Old Camberwell Beaumaris completed the perfect season of 16-0 beating Old Camberwell who made the grand final from third spot, overcoming 2019 Division 2 Premiers Therry Penola in the first semi by 2 points, and then upsetting Old Haileybury in the Preliminary Final. Last time they met, Beaumaris held Old Camberwell goalless. This time around the Wellers kicked a goal in the opening quarter, but weren’t able to convert another for the day as the Sharks produced a 24 point victory to claim the title. Rosalind Byrne (2), and Sam McLean (2) were the mainstays in front of goal. McLean capping off a stellar year finishing with 42 goals for the season.

DIVISION 3 – MCCFC def. Bulleen Templestowe MCC joined St Bede’s, Beaumaris, and Hampton to become the fourth Premier to complete a perfect 2022 season. Bulleen won only 3 games in 2021, it is an extraordinary effort for them to have finished second and now playing off in the Grand Final. Kicking off the day at Trevor Barker Oval it was a low-scoring encounter in the opening half with MCC holding a 2-point lead at half-time. The ‘Premiership quarter’ is when MCC busted open the game and pulled away from the Ants to show their Premiership dominance. Kicking two goals to hold a 16 point lead at the final change. Bulleen opened the scoring in the last quarter but it was too little too late as MCC took home the clubs first pennant in their short history. Congratulations to all Premiership sides, and all teams for getting to the Grand Final. All games were played in terrifi c spirit.

DIVISION 2 – Hampton Rovers def. Albert Park In Division 2, Hampton have the longest current winning streak in the VAFA, having now won 25 games straight since their last loss in the 2019 Division 3 Women’s Grand AlbertFinal. Park have performed incredibly well after being elevated in Round 3 from Division 3 to Division 2. It was an historic day for the club winning their first senior women’s Premiership. When the teams lined up and the Australian National Anthem was played, it was a ‘shivers down your spine’ moment for sure. Rovers were seven points up going into the final quarter, but it seemed like Albert Park had all the momentum. The Rovers were able to withstand the onslaught from the Falcons to hold on by 2 points when the siren sounded.

What the club said: Caleb joined SBMT in season 2022 after finishing his junior career at Sandringham Dragons in 2021, where he was selected in the AFL Rookie Draft.

The VAFA congratulates Caleb Lewis from St Bedes Mentone Tigers who has been nominated as the weekends Rising Star. Caleb kicked three goals and was named in the best for SBMT after the clubs 40 point win over Williamstown CYMS at the weekend.

A product of the Mordialloc-Braeside Junior Football Club, Caleb had the pleasure of playing with current AFL Footballers Blake Howes and Finn Callaghan, represented the SMJFL on numerous occasions, and was a Vic Metro U16 representative player.

A player of great versatility, Caleb can play as both a key defender and forward, can also rotate in the ruck, with a great ability to pinch hit in that position from time to time. In fact, he catches the eye in everything that he does especially his ability to take contested pack marks on a regular basis, with his ability to read the play an added Sincebonus.joining our club, Caleb has played with both our U19s and Senior men’s teams, where he has played up forward on most occasions kicking 30 goals in just 6 games.

A very likeable young man who is studying law, Caleb has endeared himself to everyone at the club in his short time with us, and we all thoroughly congratulate him on being the nominee of this well-deserved award.

Demolition Derby in Division One

It was a weekend of demolition jobs in division one with every winning side kicking 15 or more goals. Out at Packer Park, Glen Eira secured the biggest victory of the round with a 130-point win over St Mary’s Salesian. For the Gryphons, it was the usual suspects who dominated the game with Alex Erwin-Ross kicking seven goals for the afternoon. Likewise, Callum Drenth also had a busy afternoon in front of the big sticks with five majors to his name. The Gryphons finished with nine individual goal kickers to round out a complete performance as they look to build momentum in the run to finals with one round remaining. Meanwhile, the winless St Mary’s will head to their home ground this Saturday as they face Old Peninsula in what will be their final chance to secure that elusive win. At Toorak Park, Kew accounted for Prahran Assumption with a 61-point win. Kew led at every break and finished with 10 individual goal kickers for the afternoon, six of whom kicked 2 goals for more. The final round, however, will be the deciding round for a top two position with Kew facing Old Camberwell who currently sit fourth. If Kew are to win this Saturday, it will mean they remain in second position but Glen Eira who sit third will still be jumping out of the blocks to try and catch them. Meanwhile, Oakleigh had a comfortable win over Whitefriars. It was Whitefriars who started well, leading at the first break by 11 points and then sticking with Oakleigh to trail by only nine points at half-time.

The second half, however, saw Oakleigh open the gap and in the end, they showed their class to win by 47 points. A generous effort from Daniel Wood saw him kick six goals for Whitefriars but at the opposite forward line, a familiar name was also hitting targets. Aaron Cloke booted home seven goals to be best on ground for Oakleigh. His performance on the weekend brings him to 73 goals for the season with one final round to come. Round 18 will see Oakleigh face the standout team of 2022 in PEGS out at the PEGS Sporting SpeakingFields.ofPEGS, the ladder leaders faced off against Therry Penola. A fairly one-sided affair saw PEGS break away in the first quarter as they progressed their way to a 66-point win. Once again, Riley Simmons was able to hit the scoreboard as he registered five majors to his name with teammate Jordan Erougian bobbing up to kick four. With top spot all but locked away, PEGS will clearly have their focus on finals where they will be looking to repel off the momentum generated in.the back-half of this season.

Although they’re not playing each other, supporters will be scrambling to check results come 5pm on Saturday. The Cobras tough year sees the 0.19% behind Power House. Both of these sides will be playing in Division Three in 2023. They’ll be looking to finish the year in 9th spot when they face Brunswick this Saturday.

NOBS face Manningham Cobras in the final tune up before September. A win can see them finish the home and away season in third spot. A far-cry from the lowly levels they found themselves at the end of 2021 in Division One. And, a genuine chance to ruffle some Magpie feathers when it matters most. Old Paradians opened up a gap on Yarra Old Grammarians and didn’t look back. Finishing 26 points ahead of the Bushrangers. It was enough to signal to the green, blue and purple that finals was well and truly a rightful reward for the way they’ve finished out this season. Like West Brunswick, they had eight individual goalkickers which would fill the coaching staff with confidence. The unpredictable nature of the forward line could be a weapon for the defence of the top four opposition sides they’ll face.

MHSOB stayed with West Brunswick as best as they could in the opening half before the Magpies pulled away to claim a 30 point win and basically lock away the double chance. They’re a game and 53% ahead of Old Paradians in third place. Max Risstrom (4) led the way in front of goal, while the rest of the score came from eight individual goalkickers. The main man up front for the Unicorns Ashan Wijayakumara has missed the last fortnight, making them less potent in attack. They can’t make the finals this year being two games outside of the top four, but they can finish the year with pride when they tackle Power House on Saturday.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 16 DIVISION 2 MEN’S

The Magpies have the opportunity to show themselves, as well as Old Paradians what a finals like intensity will be when they clash at Ransford Oval in the final round.

The planets realigned for the top four sides in Division Two Men’s over the weekend. Despite the inclement forecast Melbourne put up. The perfect “4 seasons in one day” was as predictable as the score lines in four of the five fixtured matches last weekend.

Following the script to September

Do they show a full set of cards given West Brunswick can’t move from second, and Parade will be fighting for the dark shorts, or the white shorts in their first final against SpeakingBrunswick.ofBrunswick, they were tested by Power House in the opening quarter before over powering them after quarter time. 12 goals to one was the tale of the tape from then on. Tom Wilson (5) worked his way to his best form, Nick Burgin (3) chimed in from the midfield. For Power House, Ben Circosta (2) won’t ever die wondering. He has put his body on the line every single week this year, and never taken a backward step. He’s certainly high up in the clubs best and fairest count, and would be a strong consideration for team of the year honours.

The ladder leaders Ivanhoe AFC got back onto the winners list keeping Manningham Cobras to just one goal for the afternoon. Billy Drake returned to his best form in front of goal with a bag of seven. He has moved to equal top spot on the sharpshooters list with his coach, Ash Close. Both men on 56 goals. Will Jackson was also apart of the best on ground brigade to get the Hoers over the line. With one round to go against Bulleen Templestowe, they’ve got the minor Premiership in their grasp and will want to get all the chinks in the armour out of the way before the first semi-final vs. West Brunswick.

In perhaps the one upset of the round, Aquinas have gone down to Bulleen Templestowe in a low-scoring affair. An opening quarter four goals for the Ants was enough to hold out Aquinas for the afternoon. Harry Vogler was named best afield in the win. The rest of the game followed suit, though two goals and limiting their opponents to just seven goals in the final term gave the away side something to at least grin about. Valiant in defeat was Jordan Doyle (3), and Ben Stoios who took top honours. For the home side, Ryan Murray (10) and half the rest of the team got their chance in front of goal, but Jordan Dear (11) was named best-on.

Sheridan Harris Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device. Like all good things, the home and away season of Division 3 Men’s must come to an end this weekend, and it could haven’t been scripted any better after the events of round seventeen.

The penultimate episode of Canterbury’s season saw them surpass the 250 points mark against a Westbourne Grammarians side admirably crawling to the line, while Emmaus St Leo’s suffered another heartbreakingly close loss despite once again leading at the start of the fourth

Parkside have sealed the finals chances well and truly with a 54-point win over Richmond Central at Pitcher Park. It was an unfortunate end to the Snakes’ season, who seemed unable to take their chances in front of goal early in the game, taking a four-goal deficit into the first break. The footy gods were well on the Red Devils’ side it seemed, as the home side continued to put space between them and their opponents, before finally kicked four goals in the final term to take the win. Parkside had nine individual goalkickers, including Isaac Romano (2), Jackson Hubbard (2) and Lewis Balcombe (2), but it was Matthew Holden who took top honours. For Richmond Central, Jack Bilson kicked three and Damien one, with Benjamin Krieger his side’s best player.

South Melbourne Districts have beaten North Brunswick by 41 points at a weather-affected Allard Park to keep their top 2 hopes alive. The Bloods were up early, kicking five goals in the first term to take a 26-point buffer into quarter time break, before they kicked another four in the second quarter. The Bulls weren’t able to gain their footing at all, finishing the game with just three goals on the board, as Archie Bissinella, Jake Horwood, and Joseph Flynn were the only goalkickers. For South Melbourne Districts, Oliver Dufficy (3) and Jack Cotton (2) were the only multiple-goalkickers, but Samuel McGinn, David Commins, George Dixon and Scott Moran all kicked one each, with the latter topping the list of best players for his Holmesside.Todd Oval was not the destination for the fainthearted as Elsternwick got over the top of Emmaus St Leo’s by just two points. The lead changed all day, with the Animals taking a slim two-point buffer into the first break before the Wickers flipped the script to lead by six at half-time. Four goals to one in the third quarter gave Emmaus St Leo’s some breathing space but ultimately it wasn’t enough as they let another lead slip through their fingers, with Elsternwick’s ball movement too good. Matt Hill (2) and Lawrence Virgo (2) all gave the Animals a chance, as did their captain Harry Davis (3). For the home side, Matt Ball (4) and Daniel Marchese (2) both got enough chances in front of goal, but David Convery’s two goals got him best-on for his efforts.

Top 4 is set, but far from settled

Thequarter.top four has been settled, with Canterbury, South Melbourne Districts, Elsternwick and Parkside all into the finals for 2022. But where the first three teams land is still up in the air.

Canterbury’s eleven-goal first term was arguably all the nails in the coffin as they ran way eventual 224-point winners against the Westbourne Grammarians at Canterbury Sportsground. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the game was pretty much over as soon as it started despite getting three of their own majors on the board in the first quarter, before the Cobras put their foot down to take an already insurmountable lead into the main break.

The final round of the year sets up a mouth-watering clash between first and second that decides very much of how the top four will look. Canterbury travels to Lindsay Hassett Oval to take on South Melbourne Districts, with both teams looking to avoid any chance of finishing third.

Swinburne wins big as La Trobe and St John’s also impress Swinburne took on Masala in a finals preview for Division Four. Both teams got off to slow starts however it was the Tigers that got off to the slightly better start. Down by 3 points at the first break the Razorbacks needed a strong quarter to get back momentum back on their side. Swinburne was able to do so, kicking five goals in the second term, going into half-time with a 6-point lead. While both teams were unable to fully capitalise on scoring opportunities in the third, it was Swinburne extending their lead out to 25 points at the final change. Despite Masala having a slight 3-goal to 2 edge against the Razorbacks in the last quarter, the Tigers couldn’t take the game back. When the siren sounded it was the Razorbacks that took an important 20-point win, setting themselves up for a great chance at securing the double-chance. Trent Ryan, Aidan Vesty and Zachary Lassey were among the best for the Razorbacks. The best for Masala included Buom Koang, Brandon Kelly and Tom Williamson. Aidan Vesty (4), and Trent Ryan (3) led up forward for Swinburne with other contributors including Tyson Weigold (2) and Luke Mcmanus (2). Swinburne will finish up their home and away season in a clash against Box Hill North away. Masala will have the bye in round 18 before they face either Swinburne or St Johns in an elimination final. La Trobe did what they had to do against Box Hill North. A blistering 7-goal opening quarter whilst only allowing a single point from the Demons. La Trobe was able to take their game to another level in the second quarter adding 9 goals and extending their lead out to 108 points. Unfortunately, like games affected in other divisions, the match was called off at halftime due to Thelightning.best for La Trobe were Samuel Benetti-Baker, Riley Alexander and Riley Keath. The best for the Demons included defence duo Rowan Lawrence and Thomas Rickard and midfielder David Edwards. La Trobes’ Riley Alexander made his way back to the (equal) top of the league goalkicking with 4 majors. Other goalkickers for the Trobers include Tate Spiteri (3) and Riley Keath (2). La Trobe will now make the journey to Dandenong to take on St Johns, the only team they haven’t defeated this season. Box Hill North will meet Swinburne in a tough fixture to complete the Demons’ season.

The final match of the round saw Eley Park take on St Johns in an important match for both sides. It was the JOCs that were able to get off to the better start taking an 11-point lead over the Sharks into quarter time. Eley Park found their way back into the game kicking 5 goals during the second term, however, the JOCs had all the answers kicking 4 goals of their own to maintain a 3-point lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw an equally tight tussle as both sides traded goals, it was St Johns that took a 7-point lead into the final quarter. Needing to make an impact in the last 25 minutes to try to secure a doublechance, the JOCs dominated the final quarter adding 5 goals to their final tally whilst only allowing 1 goal from the Sharks. The JOCs took home the win by 34 points. Ben Field was the best on ground for the Sharks with Shannon Blewitt and Jacob Baddock also having great games. Brendan Ash, Benjamin Ayache and Nicholas Terrill were the best players for the JOCs. Ben Field kicked 4 goals for the Sharks, Tom Johnston (3) and Alex Penkethman (2) were other contributors for the Sharks. The JOCs had 8 goalkickers with Benjamin Ayache, Jason Naffa and Michael Horton all kicking 3 Eleygoals.Park will now make the trip down to Albert Park where they will look to cap off their season in victory. St Johns will host La Trobe, a good match-up for the JOCs to see where they sit against the premiership favourites. Albert Park who had the bye will look to finish off their season with a win as they host Eley Park a team they defeated earlier in the season.

100 Lachlan Miller (La Trobe Uni) Congratulations to La Trobe’s Lachlan Miller on reaching 100 games last week in Round 17 – Miller first joined the Trobers in 2015 as a youthful long-haired yahoo, hailing from Caramut, and said to be the love child of Jason Gillespie and Ross Noble. He played 16 games in the Under 19’s and the following season 15 reserves and a couple of Under 19 games before making his senior debut in Round 5 the following year against Power House and being named in the best players. Serving as a mobile ruckman, rebounding defender and evasive forward over his time, Miller has provided the Red & Blacks with a catalogue of highlights that would rival even his boyhood hero, the great James Hird. However, his contribution to the Trobers has been just as valuable off the field. Miller’s leadership, passion and a quick-witted quip at the back of the huddle have made sharing the field for the last 99 games and countless training sessions a treat to be a part of. Congratulations and well done Miller as you join a select group – the 70th ‘Trober to play 100 games for our Club!

150 James Rose (Glen Eira) James has been a terrific contributor on the field and an even bigger influence off the field for our club. On the field, Jimmy is a terrific ruckman who follows up at ground level with bone-jarring, lung air emptying tackles that teammates love him for. He is the current joint Thirds coach but on merit, continues to play a lot of Reserves football. Jimmy’s off-field influence has been enormous. As Monash Gryphons President, he was the instigator of merger talks for what is now the Glen Eira Gryphons and reigning VAFA Club Championship club. Throw in a couple of Thursday night post-training Poker Championship victories and Jimmy is the epitome of a great amateur football club person. Congratulations on your milestone Jim and all the well-deserved accolades that come your way this weekend.

50 Chris Tetaz Congratulations(MHSOB)toChris Tetaz on reaching the 50 games milestone for the MHSOBFC. He started his Unicorns journey by playing a crucial role in the U19s side that made the Grand Final in 2017. Following a year in the development squad, Chris made his long-awaited seniors debut during 2019 where it was evident that his ability to take the game on with his pace along the wing would be crucial to the team’s aspirations. Cementing his spot in the senior squad in 2022, Chris has gone from strength to strength becoming a leader on and off field. We wish Chris the best of luck and a huge congratulations on reaching this milestone and we look forward to many more great seasons from him.

50 Tallis Miles (Glen Eira) Congratulations to Tallis on reaching his 50 VAFA game milestone. New to the Gryphons in 2023, Tallis has had some injury woes but is playing some really good footy at the pointy end of the season. 350 Lachlan Wheeler (Hampton Rovers) The Rovers congratulate Lachlan Wheeler who recently played his 350th game in the VAFA, and then on Saturday, eclipsed the club games record when he ran out for his 353rd game in the green & gold. Wheels has been a great clubman over a long period. He first played for the club in 1999 in the Under 19s and has been a big contributor both on and off the field ever since. Awarded Life Membership of the Rovers in 2013, he has been club secretary, committee member and has helped out in many roles. More often than not, Lachie would give it his all playing in the Ressies, then assist the seniors, whether it’s running water, boundary umpire, or whatever job needed to be done. An amazing milestone for a great clubman –congratulations Wheels!

Through the good and bad JP has stuck steadfastly by the Club he loves. A most determined and courageous Player, John has won many Awards at clubland through the years. 300 Phil Avery (Hawthorn AFC) Phil has done just about everything in football. In terms of team success he was a member of our senior premiership team in 1998, and further in a reserves premiership in 2018. Then personal success has also followed Phil in being club captain (1999), winning both league (1998) and club best & fairests (1996 &1998), along with being inducted as a life member of Hawthorn AFC. Above all of that Phil also holds dear the opportunities he has had to play in the same teams as his sons Moss and Eamonn at our club too, which is certainly a unique career highlight!! Off field Phil has held roles within our football department and committee, and has through the whole journey been one of the most loved and valued members of our club by all. Congratulations Phil on now achieving your 300th game, we can’t wait to celebrate you!!

Kristin Sims Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

It was a slow start to the game with Kew and Caulfield Grammarians as both teams took time to adjust to the conditions. Stoppages and tackling were going to be the themes for the game with the heavy ground making a running game difficult. With the troubling conditions it was an important start for Kew. Caulfield weren’t going to go down easily, getting the next centre clearance and going straight into their forward line. With a strong kick at goal, Caulfield scored the equaliser to swing momentum their way. As the wind picked up in the second quarter Kew tried to take advantage but were unable to kick straight early on. Accuracy continued to be an issue for goal scoring with conditions hampering the game but Kew would go into halftime with a small lead. The third quarter saw Caulfield change tactics and have their own spare player floating across the ground. This worked as it slowed down the run of Kew and changed the pace of the game. From here the game continued to play out on ground level with lots of stoppages in the third term. No team was able to get a stronghold on the play, this resulted in no score from either team and a set up of a thrilling finish.

The Caulfield defence continued to stand up to the challenges from Kew and stop kicks from impacting the score board. Kew were able to score more points as the quarter went on which was enough for them to extend their lead over Caulfield. The marking that Kew is known for continued, every time Caulfield would try and break through into their attacking half
