The Amateur Footballer 2023 - Week 18

SEASON 2023 - August 26

The VAFA Finals Series kicked-off in wonderful style last weekend, with the highlight being the Thirds Women’s Grand Final played between West Brunswick and Kew. In perfect sunny conditions, the game was played before a large crowd of energetic supporters who had made the journey out to Whitefriars College in Donvale to cheer on their respective teams. The game itself was played in wonderful spirit, ebbing and flowing and ultimately going right down to the wire, with the Magpies taking the ultimate prize by four points.

The two teams have been clear yardsticks in the section all year and the respect between their coaches and players after the game and during the speeches at the presentation, was clear for all to see.

This Sunday will see the second VAFA Premiership for 2023 awarded to the winner of the Mecwacare Masters competition. The famous ‘Bald Eagles’ of Marcellin will be challenged by the experienced men from De La Salle on the pristine Elsternwick Park surface on Sunday 27th August.

Elsternwick Park will also play host to the Women’s Preliminary Finals from Divisions 1, 2 and 3 on Saturday, and the Division 4 Preliminary Final on Sunday.

The Men’s Thirds Preliminary Finals, from Premier to Division 5, are all taking place on Sunday at neutral venues across Box Hill, Whitefriars and Elsternwick Park, in what is forecast to be mild conditions. Elsewhere, this weekend marks the final round for the Men’s Divisions 1 through to 4 and the Premier Women’s sections, whilst the William Buck Premier Men’s sections and the Holmesglen Under 19’s will fight out the penultimate round in their seasons.

So, we are entering the best time of the year when the warmer Spring conditions prevail with the days lasting

longer and the grounds are freshly mown. The scene will be similar across many of our Clubs: the property stewards will release the brand new footies for training, the past players will venture down to watch the action and reminisce of grand tales from yesteryear, and those players absent or inconsistent with their attendance over the season will amazingly return to the training track with an enthusiasm and spring in their step not witnessed since the start of the year, as everyone puts their name forward for a spot in the team preparing for the finals. It’s always exciting for everyone involved in finals and that extends to the supporters off the field. The Club volunteers, families and friends will adorn Club uniforms, scarves and beanies in their team colours, some with signs of supporting messages, and gather in groups at the games and at the huddles as they cheer on their players. Those same supporters have shared the journey over the season, witnessing first-hand the time commitment, the injuries, the form changes, and the mood swings associated with the wins and losses. They deserve great recognition whatever the outcome.

For the umpires too, this is an exciting time. The VAFA Umpires Association held its annual awards event at Marvel stadium on Thursday night where many umpires were recognised for their performance across the season. With over 500 umpires in our competition, one of the greatest forms of recognition for an umpire is to be appointed to officiate in the finals, especially a Grand Final. Our VAFA Community can be assured that you are getting the best of the best in control of our finals matches and for all those umpires who do get selected, congratulations and enjoy the occasion.

It’s always exciting for everyone involved in finals and that extends to the supporters off the field.

Set yourselves folks. This is going to be one wild ride in the run to September.

A rare occurrence to have a bye with a fortnight to run in the home and away season. For those impatient operators amongst us it’s made this weekend coming seem like forever away when the final siren rang out to conclude round 16.

The biggest modern-day rivalry is the headline act this weekend; St Kevin’s and Collegians

Collegians have been the form side right throughout the 2023 home and away season. Their round 18 game against Old Scotch to come, the finals have started early for the ladder leaders.

St Kevin’s are working back towards their giant-killing best. After a shock loss to University Blues, the return to form has been emphatic from the reigning Premiers.

Scoring against St Kevin’s has always been tough, the last three matches they have strangled the opposition (Keeping them to 16 goals collectively). Collegians, the only team in 2023 to breakthrough to record triple figures when they last met in round seven.

Will the King Kenny and his trusty monarch of Jim Bazzani, Beary Mayhood along with the two Sam’s, Hibbins and Sofrinidis dethrone the Kings of the TH King on Saturday?

It’s been seven years since the Lions walked off the TH King Oval in triumph, a nine point win on that day. It was the first match of 18 in a storied rivalry since St Kevin’s rejoined the Premier ranks in 2016.

Since then, five games have been decided by nine points or less. Five finals overall with St Kevin’s holding a 4-1 lead. And of course, who could forget the thrilling Grand Finals in 2017 and 2018. Both finishing under a kick. Both falling the way of SKOB.

Apologies for the heartbreaking reminder Heriot and Co. You’re welcome, St Kevin’s.

Despite the Cardinals in between these two sides. This has all the makings of another Grand Final preview in 2023, and we’ll have the action unfolding in front of our eyes on RSN Xtra2 from 1:00pm.

This column a fortnight ago forecast the winner of Old Scotch and St Kevin’s as the team that would finish in second spot. St Kevin’s won that day, but the Cardinals have been able to maintain a 7% gap on SKOB to sit in the spot that holds a double chance in September.

If they want to remain there heading into Round 18, they must win big this weekend against the Caulfield Grammarians. Nothing is a given in footy, Mark Gnatt’s men can’t afford to assume this will be a walk through the park.

Shown up a fortnight ago against one of the competition benchmarks, they returned to the winners list against University Blacks. It will be a selection juggle for the Cardinals forward line with North Melbourne participating in the VFL’s wildcard weekend.

James Tarrant, started the year in a blaze of glory, has been well held in the last month. Just the four majors from the four matches. He is one who is capable of lifting with only a few touches of the football. Likewise Henry Brown, three goals from his past five matches.

Caulfield’s reserves coach Jono Nash joined the VAFA’s For the Love of the Game podcast this week, chatting through the plight of the 2023 season. A senior side made up of a majority of under 19 players who’ve fought out of their division, but never given up. Bluey McKenna has “never coached better” according to Nash.

The Fields may have drawn some inspiration from Bluey’s former life as a West Coast Eagles premiership player over the bye weekend. While the Eagles skittled the Bulldogs, perhaps Bluey can harness that spirit as the Fields attempt to skittle the Cardinals.

It’s a curious case at University Blues. They went into their Round 16 match against the Old Xaverians in second spot, they walked off the ground in fourth.

Old Melburnians are fighting for their William Buck Premier footballing lives. A fortnight ago they gave themselves a pulse with Port Melbourne releasing Tom Cameron and Dylan Clarke. Now that the VFL season for the Borough is over, the same could happen again.

Gus Borthwick has had two weeks to rest after his return game. He too could come back into Paul Satterley’s side.

Ed Ziebath returned in Round 16. Dane Crognale will miss. The Blues midfield is lesser without the chest from the west. He would have relished the head-to-head battle with Ben Harding.

This is a must win contest for Blues, as it is for OM’s. Blues can ensure they’ll see September action and eliminate the Old Brighton dream of a miracle finals entry should they keep winning. OM’s can leapfrog Old Haileybury with one round to go which will go a long way to avoiding relegation.

Despite the recent head-to-head battle leaning the way of University Blues, the two sides are evenly matched around the ground. This is a contest worth watching if you’re in the Parkville area.

Old Brighton will have slight interest in what’s happening in the aforementioned match. They will want to tick the box against University Blacks if they want to keep the dream alive.

It’s not a given that the box will be ticked. University Blacks have been more than acceptable in the second half of the season. A worthy opponent, and challenger in 2023. They have provided much entertainment, much discussion and conversation right throughout the home and away season.

Josh Steadman is probably getting tired of the attention he receives from this column. Campbell Moorfield, through his own tireless work in defence has had an exceptional year. Highlighted by his VFL debut for Coburg on Saturday during the bye round.

The next chapter of the modern-day rivalry is set to be written

He will now become the enemy of his Lions teammate in Max Kennedy. Expect those two to be available this week, as well as Pat Fairlie for Blacks (Northern Bullants), and Tom Blamires and Darby Hipwell (Sandringham Zebras) for Brighton.

The Tonners were the first to face Blacks as they returned to William Buck Premier in the season opener. This will be a much different approach to the contest from Dale Bower’s men who genuinely feel like they belong in the VAFA’s top flight.

Blacks can assist their rivals Uni Blues in ending the season for the Tonners with a win against the odds at Brighton Beach Oval.

Old Haileybury, like Old Melburnians are fighting for the opportunity to remain in William Buck Premier in 2024.

The Old Xaverians never have been, and never will be an easy-beat. Particularly off the back of the club’s best performance of the season a fortnight ago. While the paranoia had set in about the potential of being relegated to Premier B because it was mathematically a chance, the 22 men that ran out in Round 16 shut those discussions down with a complete performance.

Expect more of the same from Alec Sprajla and Jack Boyd. Marcus Stavrou, Dan Robinson and the smooth moving Denis Symeopoulos. Michael Batten provided the forward line spark that’s been there in fits and spurts throughout the year.

Footscray have a pre-finals bye, will Charlie MacIsaac be cleared to play? The Big V hero could be the difference between these two sides come 5pm.

Apart from a couple of blow outs, Old Haileybury have been competitive, and strong in their return to William Buck Premier.

Respect has been the word put on the agenda early in the season by Daniel Ward. It’s an intangible KPI, but the feedback from opposition clubs, coaches and players all echo the sentiments, it’s a term they’ve earned for their output this year.

Old Haileybury starred in the 2022 Premier B finals series, an all-time classic victory against Fitzroy, a thumping Preliminary Final win over Beaumaris and the grittiest and gutsiest of Grand Final triumphs in trying conditions. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if the Bloods harnessed the energy and spirit of September from 12 months ago in this final fortnight to stay up in William Buck Premier for 2024.

This weekend can’t come quick enough. The penultimate round of the year. There’s 10 games remaining in the home and away season. 14 games left for 2023.

Every game has something riding on it. Each club knows what they need to do. The destiny is in each club’s hands, and I can’t wait to see who puts their name in lights and takes it by the scruff of the neck this Saturday.

Melbourne Uni and Fitzroy upset the middle order

With just one round of the 2023 season to go before finals, St Kevin’s returned fresh off the bye to flex their muscles with an impressive win over West Brunswick. Last year’s premiers showed why they are once again the hot favourites heading into finals, holding the Magpies to just three points for the entirety of the game.

A seven-goal first half set the game up for SKOB, with Eliza Straford kicking three goals to be the best on ground. A slower third quarter saw West Brunswick miss opportunities to score, kicking three behinds whilst SKOB kicked 1.1. Inaccuracy played a part in the game, with St Kevin’s kicking 12 behinds – a key area that they’ll need to correct if they are to become back-toback premiers.

Catherine Stanton was named in the best after what has been a quiet couple of weeks, and also took her goal tally for the year to 26. Bree Doyle and Sarah Betts were named alongside Stanton in the best. West Brunswick did not name their best players at the time of writing and did not have any goal kickers for the game.

Next up in the final round of the home and away season, St Kevin’s will travel to Victoria Park to play Kew in what looms as a potential grand final preview. West Brunswick will host Old Scotch in a must-win clash, as well as needing other results to go their way if they are to make a late bid for a spot finals.

Collegians suffered their second loss in a row, falling to Fitzroy by 17 points on Saturday. The loss sees Collegians placed precariously in fifth position, with Coburg and West Brunswick both threatening to overtake them depending on how results play out next weekend.

Collegians had the upper hand in the first quarter, scoring 3.1 whilst Fitzroy were kept scoreless. However, Fitzroy came out firing in the second quarter, scoring an unanswered 5.2. The game was decided in the fourth quarter, Fitzroy missing opportunities to run away with it by scoring 1.5 yet were lucky that they were able to defend strongly and hold Collegians to a goal.

Simone Mooney was best on ground, complimenting her strong performance with a goal, whilst Erin Gogerly had three goals to her name. Collegians did not upload best players or goal kickers at the time of writing.

Collegians can secure their position in finals next weekend when they host Melbourne Uni, although will need Caulfield to lose to jump over them into fourth.

Fitzroy will have the bye, having played their last game for the season this weekend and finish the season with the wooden spoon.

In what was a weekend of big results, Melbourne Uni handed Caulfield Grammarians a shock defeat in what was a close game right until the final siren. It was Melbourne Uni’s accurate kicking which saw them run out victorious, finishing with 8.1 for the game compared to Grammarians’ 5.7.

The game was all squared up at 30 points at the final change and looked like it could go either way. However, Melbourne Uni harnessed their momentum to come out firing, scoring 3.1 in the final quarter to snatch victory.

Asha Price and Katie Archer both had two goals apiece, whilst Tahlia Meier had one goal in her best on ground performance. Grammarians did not upload best players or goal kickers at the time of writing.

Caulfield will host Coburg next Saturday morning in an important clash, whilst Melbourne Uni travel to Harry Trott Oval to take on Collegians on Saturday afternoon.

Kew bounced back from defeat last weekend with a 13-point win over Coburg, levelling themselves with St Kevin’s on the ladder; both teams having recorded 13 wins for the season.

Whilst it was an even first quarter, Kew’s second quarter set up victory, scoring two goals and holding Coburg scoreless for the term. The Lions scored two goals for the second half to keep it an even game, with Kew scoring two goals in the third quarter.

Sarah Jolly, Georgia Sampson and Bree Unthank all scored for the Lions, whilst Kiana Minchin was their best. For Kew, Olivia McLennan was their best on ground for the first time this season, having previously been included in the best on one prior occasion.

Coburg face a tough task next weekend in travelling to play Caulfield, whilst Kew hosts St Kevin’s in a massive game of the round.

THE OFFICIAL NON-ALCOHOLIC BEER OF THE VICTORIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION FINALS.

Tigers and Sharks shaking things up in Premier B

With only two rounds to come this season, the middle part of the ladder continues to be tight as Beaumaris mount a finals race which started with them defeating Old Geelong on the weekend. Likewise, St Bedes/ Mentone have kept things interesting with a win over the second placed Fitzroy in a round that was vitally important for clubs with their seasons still alive.

While inaccuracy caused some minor problems, Beaumaris were able to secure a 65-point win against Old Geelong at Banksia Reserve. The Sharks finished with a staggering 40 shots on goal but converting in front of goal was an issue with 25 behinds for the afternoon. Despite this, Joel Cusack showed some polish with five majors along with Ben Hempel who kicked four.

Old Geelong was restricted to just 7 goals for the match with Beaumaris putting on a blistering second half as they dominated the ball movement and maintained much of the possession. The Sharks ruckman Callum Heath was once against their best as he continues his fine year, with he and Harry Thompson of Old Trinity standing out as two of the strongest ruckman in the competition. The win for the Sharks see’s them now on equal points with Old Geelong and only a game behind De La Salle and St Bedes/Mentone who sit in the four.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers kept their finals hopes intact with an 8-point victory over Fitzroy. In what was a fantastic high scoring game, the Tigers were able to kick six goals in the first quarter to edge the margin at quarter time out to 19 points. The final change saw the Tigers 20 points in front before the Roys got going in the last kicking four goals to two.

Fitzroy’s Aiden Lambert was handy down forward with four goals while the Tigers were assisted by Jack Ferraro who finished with four and was named as their best. Chris Mangoni also played a part in the forward line with three majors.

For the Roys, it’s a loss that will sting, particularly heading into September where momentum is crucial for teams vying for the ultimate success. The Tigers finish the round inside the four, but they must win their final two games against De La Salle and Williamstown with the Sharks holding a significantly higher percentage.

De La Salle found themselves in an unusual situation with an incredibly low scoring match against Old Trinity with the rain clearly causing problems for both sides. Old Trinity finished the day with just two goals while De La Salle was only able to get the win with just five goals.

De La Salle’s Joshua Cumberlidge kicked two majors with Lachlan Gawel their best on ground. For De La Salle they continue their run to the finals in third spot but with the unpredictability of the season they too will be under pressure to perform during the final two rounds.

The final two games of the round were somewhat predictable with Williamstown defeating Monash Blues by 47 points and St Bernards beating AJAX by 93 points. While they won’t be playing finals, the season from Williamstown has been a positive one with a young developing list continuing to gain experience at a strong level. Oskar Manton again was busy up forward with four goals while Will Smyth also kicked four goals.

The Snowdogs continue to build momentum at a crucial stage of the season which again saw a plethora of goal kickers hit the score board. Dom Sullivan kicked five majors for the afternoon and joined the list of their 10 goals kickers, six of which had two or more goals while Ethan Schumann was named the Snowdogs best player. Premier B have a chance to regroup and tighten up on those areas that need improving as they head into a bye round, ahead of what will be a mammoth final two matches of the home and away season for 2023.

Cobras with one final chance to wrestle the minor premiership from the clutches of the Blues

With finals just around the corner, all 8 teams in Premier B Women’s were looking to finish on a high in the penultimate round, ahead of the last hoorah for 4 of our teams. Though, it was the top four who pulled out all their best moves.

After saying goodbye to a chance at finals, Brunswick are left feeling defeated again after their home match against Aquinas OC. Aquinas were simply too strong all day and the Nobs couldn’t keep them at bay.

Scoring Brunswick’s only goal was Augie Ross, while Morgyn McCarthy performed to the best of her abilities, earning herself best-on-field.

Hannah Mclean and Holly Spicer doubled up on goals this week, while Millie Edwards, Jenna White, Abby Guerin and Riley Christgoergl contributed one goal each as Kalen Winters put on a best-player performance.

Brunswick’s final match of the season will be against the Monash Blues, while Aquinas will come head-tohead against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.

Sitting comfortably in fourth on the ladder is St Bedes/Mentone Tigers who defeated Richmond Central by a significant 76 points.

It was an exceptional week for SBMT, with Laura Amelung, Chloe Saultry and Maddison Wilson scoring an outstanding 3 goals each while Olivia Watkins, Eliza Cooper and Madeline Pearson scored 1 goal each with Madeleine Tilley being deemed best player.

Kicking Richmond’s one and only goal was Christie Brewis working alongside best-on-field Alexis Smith, making the most of their last few games of the season.

In round 18 the Tigers will take an outing to the home grounds of Aquinas OC while Richmond plays their last match for the season against the Old Yarra Cobras.

It has been a tough season for North Brunswick suffering a total of 16 defeats, and unfortunately unable to leave their mark in this week’s match against the second-placed Old Yarra Cobras.

The Cobras registered 7 individual goal scorers, including Georgia Hatton, Mikayla Plunkett, Lara Hausegger and Alyssa Bernado all with 1, while Iliana Zafiriou booted 3 and Tahlia Limburg scored 2 as did Emma Elliott who was deemed best afield.

Despite being unable to register a goal, the valiant efforts of Matilda Franks and Monique Goates are to be commended. The Cobras were just too strong and literally ran away with it, the Renegades unable to halt the onslaught.

North Brunswick will share their last game of the season with Mazenod OC while the Cobras head to the home grounds of Richmond Central.

The Monash Blues reigned supreme once again, in their match against Mazenod OC over the weekend. It was another one-sided affair for round 17, with Mazenod only able to register a single goal for the match.

Mazenod’s Erin Hopkins was the sole goal kicker for her team while Emily Skrzyniaz did her best to shorten the margin between the final scores. Next week Mazenod will partake in their final match of the season, against North Brunswick.

Whilst Monash came away with the win, it could have been a whole lot more convincing, as they finished with 7.10. Their accuracy will sure be a focus ahead of a final’s appearance. Ainslee Elliott was on the ball this weekend, scoring a total of 3 goals for her team and earning player of the match. Teammates Tara Monyihan, Brook Thompson, Emma Draffin and Natasha Newman all contributing one goal each.

The Blues will play a home match against Brunswick, aiming to gain momentum for the finals.

With just one week remaining before the finals, Iliana Zafiriou leads the goal-scoring chart with a total of 28 goals. Laura Amelung follows closely with a single goal behind. Tahlia Limburg secures the third spot with 20 goals, followed by Molly McFarlane with 19 and Emma Draffin with 16.

And then there were four: Vultures demolish Mazenod to secure finals spot

Round 16 of the Premier C Men’s competition has solidified the four teams that will compete in the finals. However, the specific order of these top 4 teams remains uncertain with two rounds remaining.

The standout match of the week turned out to be a complete blowout, as the Parkdale Vultures dominated Mazenod, securing their spot in the finals and eliminating Mazenod from contention.

Mazenod had a dismal outing, failing to pose a threat throughout the day. The Vultures steadily expanded their lead at every interval of the game, ultimately emerging victorious with a commanding 62-point lead. Josh Manning and Jarrod Peake each scored three goals for Parkdale in the victory.

Mazenod will lament the missed opportunity, as their season has concluded in an incredibly disappointing manner. On the contrary, the Vultures have extended their impressive winning streak to six matches, confirming their position in the finals with a likely 4th place finish.

The Vultures have demonstrated that they shouldn’t be dismissed from contention, with their victories over formidable opponents highlighting them as one of the most in-form teams of the competition, along with Old Camberwell.

As Parkdale heads into their bye week on a high note, they’ll be met by Old Camberwell on the other side. This sets the stage for an exciting matchup just one week away from the finals.

Speaking of Old Camberwell, they have asserted their dominance over the competition with a significant 22-point victory against Old Ivanhoe. Despite holding only an 8-point lead at three-quarter time, Old Camberwell exhibited control throughout the day.

Impressively, eleven of their twenty-two players contributed at least one goal, highlighting their teamoriented and dominant approach.

The outcome is a major setback for Old Ivanhoe, as securing a top 2 finish has become an uphill battle. They now trail behind second-placed PEGS by one game. Fortunately for them, a showdown in the final round against PEGS could potentially determine the second-place finish.

Meanwhile, Old Camberwell is just one victory away from securing a minor premiership; a highly likely outcome as they face second-to-last Marcellin in the next round.

PEGS easily handled Marcellin this week, securing an 11-goal victory as they strive to solidify their top 2 finish. Jack Fenner’s exceptional performance was evident as he scored 5 goals in the convincing win.

Marcellin remains just one win ahead of the bottom, occupying the 8th spot on the 9-team ladder. Their primary focus now seems to be avoiding relegation, with the bottom team heading to Division 1 for the 2024 season.

Old Carey battled Hampton Rovers in a low-scoring affair in the wet at Carey Sports Complex. The Rovers held a slight advantage at the main break and led by 5 points at the final change in what was a real arm wrestle.

With a league-wide bye scheduled for the upcoming weekend, the next round will test three of the top 4 teams against weaker opponents in crucial must-win games. Old Camberwell, PEGS, and Old Ivanhoe all face these challenges with Parkdale having the week off.

West Brunswick take home first Premiership for 2023

West Brunswick AFC defeated Kew FC on Sunday afternoon in the Thirds Women’s Grand Final out at Whitefriars College, to take home the first Premiership Cup for the 2023 finals series.

Although Kew went in as favourites, having beaten West Brunswick three times throughout the home and away season, it was a day that belonged to the Magpies having to come from behind at three quarter time to claim the victory.

It was a nice redemption piece for West Brunswick after losing the Thirds Grand Final last year to St Kevin’s Kew 3.7.25 def by. West Brunswick 4.5.29

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

Zara Wilson (Collegians)

The VAFA congratulates Zara Wilson from Collegians Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 17 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Zara has jumped straight into playing Premier Women’s senior football, from her former U18 team and has made a significant impact right out of the gates. We also recognise that she has been named in the best on numerous occasions this season which is no small feat.

What the club said:

Zara joined Collegians program for training two seasons ago as a 16 year old while she was still playing football with St Kilda Junior Football Club.

From the very first training session she did with our squad, it was apparent that she is an incredibly capable athlete who was already able to mix it with senior players despite her young age. Taking the early leap from junior to senior football has proven to be a fantastic decision for her.

Just two weeks ago, Zara was part of the Melbourne Girls Grammar team who won their first ever Herald Sun Shield Premiership, crowning themselves as the best school girl team in Victoria, defeating Caulfield and ending their 6 year win streak in the process - a monumental achievement.

From Head Coach Dom Lucarelli: “Zara is everything you want in your players on field as a coach: she is fearless and courageous around the contested ball; she is tenacious with her repeated efforts and she is versatile and level headed in the heat of battle. Her humility and humour is greatly endearing and it’s easy to see why she is adored and respected by the entire squad, both on field and off.”

She is leading the charge of our crop of young players coming through our ranks, and while juggling her year 12 studies this ye ar, she is playing her best football yet, which is a really terrific achievement of balance, and it says everything about who she is as a person. As a coach, you feel truly lucky to be part of these journeys.”

Oakleigh teach Bears a lesson, as Two Blues cement finals

What a week of football in the penultimate round of the home and away season. A loss to both UHS-VU and Therry Penola leaves the door for fourth spot wide open, in what will be decided in a head-to-head showdown. So, let’s unpack the Round 17 results for the weekend gone.

Kew FC vs Oakleigh

After the Ashes just gone you could tell Oakleigh took a page out of Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum’s ‘Bazball’ tactics as they blasted out of the blocks early on in the first term, posting a nine goal to two deficit at Kew’s Victoria Park.

One man who stood in the Bears way was Aaron Cloke, the Division 1 goal kicking headache for defenders was electric as he took on a great duel with Bear’s skipper, Max Waters. Three early majors to Cloke set the tone for the day for the Krushers. Michael Hannon’s influence somewhat stemmed the flow for the Bears with a classy major from the boundary line, which silenced his critics over the fence.

The Krushers didn’t stop there with Cloke still proving a headache for Bears and his right-hand man, Luke Ashen, chimed in with seven majors of his own; the duo docked an impressive 17 goals between them for the day.

The gallant Bears refused to wave the white flag and tried their best to chase down the Krushers. Underrated midfielder/forward for Kew, Regan Smith, achieved a personal best with six classy majors, whilst Ted Nornley worked tirelessly in the midfield. A high scoring affair at Victoria Park with 249 points between both teams (158-91) was a classy display of skill in front of the big sticks at both ends of the ground.

Old Peninsula vs Ivanhoe

Old Peninsula hosted the Hoers down at the Harry McDonald oval. The first term saw a great start from the Pirates as Jake Lovett and Ben Williamson provided some fireworks out of the midfield, whilst livewire Bailey Payze was shifted as a permanent forward all game and was one of the best on the ground with six majors.

The Hoers did provide a comeback in the second term, getting plenty of the ball but kicking an inaccurate 6.6. Ivanhoe did have Ash Close who was able to convert three majors, whilst Wayne Schultz was able to provide moments for the Hoers. The Pirates fought back after the main break and came away with a handy six goal victory to gather their seventh win for the season.

Therry Penola vs Prahran

At John Pascoe Reserve the Lions hosted the Two Blues in what could have been a season ladder shaping game for both teams. The Lions got the early use of being on top, as Cairan Wrigglesworth helped guide Therry to an early break over the Two Blues. Jonathan Simoetta proved he has still got it by adding 4 exceptional majors that really kept the Two Blues in the game.

With scores all tied at half time, the Lions came out for the third term feeling that they could take the game to another level. Connor Kilbane provided three goals which really started to build the momentum for the Lions. But it was the experience out of the Two Blues side that really saw them unexpectedly get over the line a brilliant 50-point final term. James Musster and Matt Clifford really stepped up and demonstrated that extra level of experience to see their side win by 28 points.

Preston Bullants vs West Brunswick

The Bullants go marching in for another win, this time against the Magpies. It was a clean start as Preston was able to maximise their goal kicking prowess by capitalising on their accuracy. The Patrick duo in Taylor and Davies had 3 majors each, whilst the Magpies were kept in the game through Ben Ablett and Herbert Fithall. But it was the Bullants who had support all through the ground and numerous players played their part, culminating in 10 different goal scorers.

The game was essentially won in the Premiership quarter, with the Bullants simply adding the cherry on top in the fourth, extending their margin out to 51 points.

Glen Eira vs UHS-VU

The Glen Eira Gryphons have had a breakout season and show no signs of slowing down as finals looms. UHS looked shaky in front of goals on home soil and went into half time four goals down but could have easily been within a kick or even in front if they kicked straight.

Joel Chilcott was a hero for the Gryphons with five handy majors, with teammate Sean Bass pocketing 4 goal, to keep the Vultures at an arm’s length. Jesse Maxfield proved to be a class act all day and provided a best on ground performance. It was an A-team performance by Glen Eira, adding yet another win to their bow to round out the season coming away with a 65-point victory.

Sharks swim their way into the Grand Final, as Old Brighton get bowled out

It’s late August and VAFA Finals are officially under way! The top 4 finishers in the Division 1 Women’s competition earned their spots through hard-fought wins in a competitive season, to put themselves head and shoulders above the competition.

The Semi Finals kicked off with a clash between Old Brighton and Marcellin OC. This third v fourth match up was a must win for both sides to keep their Premiership hopes alive.

It was a fairly even contest out of the gates with scores at 7 apiece heading into the first break. Marcellin broke away in the second, kicking 2 goals to Old Brighton’s 1 goal. Old Brighton had their hearts and souls in this game, but unfortunately were unable to halt the momentum of Marcellin in the second half, who extended their lead at every break.

Marcellin ran out the comfortable winner with a 46-29 victory over Old Brighton and will be heading into a Preliminary Final this coming weekend. Charlotte McGilp starred yet again this season for Marcellin earning herself a best on ground, whilst they had three multiple goal scorers in Zoe Glascott, Jasmine Getson, and Charlotte Van Der Vlies.

Cat O’Brien was once again the best afield for Old Brighton and carried her team through a seasonending loss. Stephanie Bierenbroodspot managed 2 majors for the day to keep her side in the contest.

Directly following Semi Final 1, Beaumaris and the Old Melburnians ran onto the field at Whitefriars College Oval, aware that the winner would earn an express ticket to the Grand Final, whilst the losing team would face off against Marcellin in a second-chance Preliminary Final.

The Old Melburnians got a jump on Minor Premiers, Beaumaris, early on to take an 8-point lead into quarter time. Beaumaris registered only two behinds in the first term, no doubt an area that was addressed in the huddle. They were able to get a lot more of the ball in the second, which they converted on the scoreboard as 2.3, to the Omelettes single behind.

Beaumaris held a small lead at half time and ran away with it from there. Not wanting to let that seat in the Grand Final slip through their fingers they put the foot down and got the job done by a mere 5 points. It was a relatively low scoring affair with a combined 7 goals kicked. Samantha Baisas was everywhere for the Sharks and couldn’t be stopped, kicking 2 majors in a best on ground performance. Stephanie Barnett has timed her run of form perfectly, impacting where it mattered and led from the front for the Omelettes.

This Saturday at the home of the VAFA, the Old Melburnians will face off against Marcellin in a Preliminary Final showdown. The winner will go onto battle it out with the undefeated Beaumaris in what is sure to be a blockbuster Grand Final. Head down to Elsternwick Park for all the Preliminary Final action!

One round to go, and the top four is not locked away just yet

The standard of football across Division 2 Men’s this year is something to be commended and makes for an exciting season. The fact that we are heading into round 18, and the top 4 are not yet locked away highlights the competitive brand of football our clubs are producing.

This rounds’ highlights include two top 5 clashes that saw Whitefriars and South Melbourne Districts overthrow their higher ranked opponents to keep themselves in finals contention.

Round 17 kicked off at Whitefriars College Oval where Brunswick travelled to face the Whitefriars. This match was almost more important for Brunswick who could have secured a top two position which would guarantee them a second chance come finals. But it was the Friars who had a fire in the belly, hungry to make an appearance come finals.

Goals came from the boots of numerous players at both ends, with Samuel Kieseker (5) once again leading the charge for the Friars, whilst Paul Scamporlino contributed 3 for the Nobs. After getting their noses in front at the first huddle, Whitefriars were overrun at the main break with Brunswick gaining a small lead. Just as they seemed to have things under control in the Premiership quarter, the Friars put the jets on in the final term to boot an incredible 8 goals for the quarter, coming away with a 26-point victory.

The efforts of James McKenzie and James Perrin were second to none in an incredible come from behind win and were named best on ground for the Friars. Yet again, Angus Ross starred for the Nobs and will be looking to lift the energy for a four-quarter performance in the coming round.

Sticking on the theme of blockbusters, we head to Lindsay Hassett Oval at Albert Park for what was a good old-fashioned showdown between South Melbourne Districts and Old Yarra Cobras. With both teams very much in finals contention a win either way would be highly advantageous heading into round 18.

The first term was a pretty lackluster start, with the Cobras scoring 1.9, to only put them 3 points ahead of the Bloods’ 2 straight goals. The energy in the second lifted and it was all tied up at 41 apiece heading into the main break, however the Cobras still carrying an additional 5 scoring shots, with accuracy their downfall.

Jamie Brooker has had an impressive season up forward for the Bloods, adding another 5 majors from the weekend to his season tally. The Bloods put their heart and souls into this one and held on when things seemed to be slipping away. With the likes of Sam Bradford and Vincenzo Armenia at the helm and best on, the Bloods managed to turn around a 9-point deficit at three quarter time to emerge victorious by 10 points.

Calum Johnston’s four-quarter efforts earned himself best on for the Cobras. Sitting precariously in third after the penultimate round, the Cobras must win their final match up to secure that third placed finish or even potentially jump into second; that 2-point difference from the bye coming in handy at this late stage.

Despite registering one more win than their counterpart thus far for the season, Old Paradians seem to be a mountain that MHSOB cannot conquer. Parade started strong with a 5 goal to 1 first quarter, giving insight as to what was to come. In an entertaining high scoring affair, Michael Boundy went all guns blazing in front of the big sticks with 8 majors for the day; just shy of his career-best 10 goals.

The Unicorns put in a valiant effort and worked hard to stay in the contest, but it fell just short of Parade’s best. Tom Rendell drew on his years of experience on a tough day to produce a standout, 2-goal, best on ground performance for the Unicorns. With finals looming, Joshua Christelow has also timed his progression well with arguably one of his best games for the season for Parade.

Old Paradians came away with a comfortable 37-point win at Woodfull-Miller Oval, looking to finish strong next round as their season wraps up.

St Mary’s Salesian stepped out on home soil and there was no doubt that they mean business. Although they miss out on finals this year, they are throwing

everything they have into challenging their final opponents, and it certainly paid off in an annihilation over Bulleen

Templestowe

The Saints kicked an accurate 20.12 for the day to finish with their highest score for the season of 132. Jack Elliston was the player of the match for the Saints, with a breakout 8-goals. Danny Moore led from the front on a tough day for the Bullants, while Jack Cowell contributed four of the nine goals scored, to their final score of 64.

To round out the weekend, we had our ladder leaders, Parkside, take on the bottom of the table in Aquinas Although this was going to be a tough match up for Aquinas, they are to be commended on a courageous season. Whilst the ladder may not reflect their efforts as such, they have been competitive in many of their games and conceded wins by the narrowest of margins.

Parkside comfortably got the job done on the weekend and will head into finals as minor premiers. Parkside led throughout, with the final score of 79-31 reflecting the ease to which they strung together a four-quarter performance. Ben Radford has had a stellar year in front of goals, and with 3 more from the match, he has all but secured the competition’s leading goal kicker for the 2023 season.

Steven Logozzo was best on for Parkside, whilst Sam Glennie had his first best on ground performance for Aquinas.

To see out the 2023 home and away season, Brunswick will face MHSOB in a must win clash should they wish to lock in that second position on the ladder. The Cobras will host the Saints, as Parkside travel to the home of the Old Paradians. With both teams vying for fourth spot, Whitefriars will be looking to get a win over Aquinas, whilst South Melbourne Districts need to deliver an upset over Bulleen Templestowe to feature in finals. With a lot on the line, bring on Round 18!

Elsternwick gives fans a reason to believe in 2023

The boys from Elsternwick are making every post a winner in 2023. They have played inspired footy off the back of the heartbreak that halted the dream in 2022.

After a tight opening term against La Trobe University, the Wicks were able to extend their lead at the conclusion of each quarter. Eventually running out winners by 61 points.

Since July 1, it’s been all about Spencer Hankin in the red and black. Playing a role similar to Peter Wright when he donned the Bombers colours earlier in 2023. Another five on the weekend gave him 35 for the season from seven matches, he’s likely to be a massive factor in September.

Elsternwick are on an 11-game winning streak, heading into the final home and away round this weekend against Power House, they’ll be looking to head into finals with the perfect dozen next to their name.

Matt Ogle has put together a brilliant individual season for La Trobe, 27 majors and named a part of the best players 10 times. Another similar display on the weekend has him in the box seat to feature prominently on the club’s best and fairest night.

La Trobe will finish in the bottom two, but be keen to finish the year off with a win as they head out to Kevin Bartlett Reserve to tackle Richmond Central.

Who Elsternwick will play in the semi-final is still up for the taking. Hawthorn AFC went a long way to making that spot their very own with an obliteration of Swinburne University

11 goals in the first quarter set up the day. The margin was over triple figures at half-time. Will Meehan (10 goals) and Justin Raiti (9 goals) traded majors through the afternoon as the margin extended beyond 200.

The two tall targets are equal with 64 goals apiece heading into the final weekend, the battle for the competition sharpshooter is the side dish to the main

course. It’s so promising considering what’s to come in the next month, the Hawks have the proven firepower to kick a premiership winning score.

It’s been a trying year for Swinburne, they’ve never thrown in the towel or left anything out on the field. Aidan Vesty has led the way in front of goal with 28 for the season. Brad Field has been part of the best players in 50% of his games. Should they head down to Division 4 in 2024, they’ll see themselves as genuine contenders to come straight back up for the 2025 season.

Hawthorn will face Wattle Park in Round 18, in eight of the last nine matches the scoring prowess has been on display. Only the Animals have been able to stop them from going above the ton. Will it happen again this weekend?

A loss for the Hawks, and a Canterbury victory will see these sides match up for a second consecutive week in a do-or-die final. A must-win match up for the Hawks.

Canterbury have kept their top two chances alive with a somewhat comfortable 56 point win over Power House

Opening the day with the first five majors, the boys from Power House came back at the Cobras in the second term with four goals, closing the margin to 14 points at the main change.

From there the Cobras took a stranglehold on the game with nine goals in the second half. Tom Lowden, Nick McMahon and Jordan Dear combined with eight goals in the forward half.

While the year started off in positive fashion for the boys of Ross Gregory Oval, the back half of the season has seen them fall away. They’ve been competitive in patches that will hold them in good stead for next season.

Canterbury are in charge of their own destiny this weekend against Swinburne. It’s a must-win game. They’ll have an eye on Hawthorn and Wattle Park. It’s unlikely they’ll make up the 28% gap to get to second, regardless, a spot in the finals is there, and heading into the finals in strong winning form is what they want.

Wattle Park have had an exceptional year. When you consider where they’ve been, and where they’ve come from. Where they’re heading is up, and it’s great to see.

The off-season name change has inspired the Animals to rediscover their identity, their DNA and play footy the way they’ve hoped to show supporters in recent years.

Saturday proved to be a gutsy win over Richmond Central to officially book in September.

Leading by a point at three quarter time, the Animals were able to run out the game and record a 27 point win with Newbegin Baxter kicking three goals in another best on ground display.

While they don’t quite have the twin-towers like Hawthorn, the desirable even spread of goals is on display at Wattle Park every week. The flipping the ball around the midfield makes it tough for opposition to clamp down on.

Could they join the list of teams who’ve gone on fairytale runs from fourth to make a Grand Final in the last 12 months?

Since Round 10, Richmond have alternated wins with losses in opposing weeks. The inability to string consecutive wins together has proved costly in the back half of the season. Going on this formline though, bookmark Round 18 with a win, to finish off the year on a high.

Albert Park gets a major win as attention turns to round 18

Box Hill North vs Albert Park

The first match of the round saw an epic clash take place as Box Hill North faced Albert Park in a second vs third contest. The Demons do what they do best and that is get a very good start on their opponents. The Demons were able to kick 4 goals whilst only allowing 2 goals from the Falcons to take a 12-point lead into the quarter-time break. The second quarter saw both teams begin to put their foot down on the accelerator as both teams were able to kick 5 goals for the quarter setting the scene for a tense second half. As the siren sounded to mark the end of the first half, it was the Demons who retained a 12-point lead.

If the second quarter had both teams step on the accelerator, the third quarter saw the Falcons stomp on it and push it to the floor as they were able to kick a whopping 7 goals for the quarter to take the lead from the Demons, holding a 16-point lead as both teams had their final break. In the final quarter, both sides fought to the very end but despite 3 goals by the Demons, the Falcons were able to hold them off with 3 goals of their own to win a thriller by 13 points. This win gives the Falcons a huge boost with their spot in finals now officially cemented for the first time since 2019.

Marcus Lorkin, Joshua Hocking, Mark Squillace and Alexander Williams all kicked 2 goals for the Demons. For the Falcons, Jack Lee ran the show up forward with 7 majors.

Ashley Evans (4), Jack Amies (3) and Reece French-Lightfoot (2) were the other multiple-goal kickers for the Falcons. In the best for the Demons were Joshua Hocking, Findlay Hanna and Marcus Lorkin. In the best for the Falcons were Jack Lee, Ashley Evans and Daniel Young. The Demons will now play St Johns, a team they had previously lost to. The Falcons will now play Masala, a side they have defeated in their past 2 meetings.

Masala vs North Brunswick

The second match of the round saw Masala face North Brunswick with redemption on the mind of the Tigers and momentum on the minds of the Bulls. No team this season had managed to defeat the Bulls in 2023, and the Tigers wanted to be the first. The first quarter saw both teams giving their best instantly, but this hard-fought football resulted in both teams struggling to hit the scoreboard. With the only goal of the quarter, it was the Bulls that held a 10-point lead at quarter time. The Tigers found their footing in the second quarter as they were able to add on 5 goals in the quarter whilst only allowing 2 goals from the Bulls. This saw the

Tigers hold a 3-point lead over the Bulls as the siren sounded, marking only the second time the Bulls have been behind at halftime.

The third quarter was another fast-paced one from both sides as the game began to roughen up, however on the scoreboard, it remained just about even as with 2 goals kicked by both sides, Masala was able to retain a 2-point lead over the Bulls. After slowing the momentum of the Tigers in the third, The Bulls turned the game around with 4 of the first 5 goals of the quarter to take their lead out to 18 points. With a few minutes on the clock, Tiger Dave Velardo kicked a massive goal from 50m out. Unfortunately, for the Tigers, it was too little too late as the toughness and durability of the Bulls were enough to leave winners by 12 points, continuing their undefeated season.

Zac Pahos had his best game of the season with the Tigers with 4 key goals. Dave Velardo also had 2 majors for the Tigers with other goal-kickers including Jake Dunkley, Tom Williamson and Luke Broomhall. For the Bulls, Andrew Ramzy was the target up forward and he repaid the efforts of his midfield with 4 majors. Teammate Marcus Watt kicked 2 goals whilst Luke Russell, Jake Horwood and Jacob Cornejo kicked 1 goal each. In the best for the Tigers were Luke Decarne, David Velardo and Riley Shaw. In the best for the Bulls were Luke Russell, Cameron Lee and Zac Dicianni. The Tigers now turn their attention to the Falcons in the final round, where they need to secure a win or would be hoping for the JOCs to lose in order to cement that illustrious top 4 spot. The Bulls now have the first position on the ladder on lock as they face Eley Park in their final match before the finals.

St Johns vs Eley Park

The final match of the round saw St Johns take on Eley Park in what was a game that resulted in a significant confident booster for one team. After a slow start last week, the JOCs weren’t going to be held back as they got off to a hot start kicking 6 goals whilst keeping the Sharks to a single goal as they held a 38-point lead at the quarter-time break. The JOCs then took their game to another level in the second quarter with one of their biggest quarters of the season as they dominated the quarter with 8 goals whilst they prevented the Sharks from hitting the scoreboard as they extended their lead out to 89 points.

The third quarter saw the Sharks start their fight back as they hit the scoreboard with a goal of their own whilst keeping the JOCs to their smallest quarter, however, 5 goals added still

hurt the margin for the Sharks as the JOCs extended their lead out to 114 points as both teams went into their huddle for the final time. The JOCs however managed to end the match with all momentum on their side as they ran away with the game with a 6-goal quarter whilst once again keeping the Sharks scoreless. In the end, it was the JOCs that left with a major 156-point victory, that not only was the third biggest win in the division this season, but it was a victory that puts all the pressure on the Tigers as the JOCs seek to eliminate the team from a spot in the finals that eliminated them in 2022.

JOCs teammates Kailum Newland (5) and Nicholas Terrill (4) combined for 9 goals whilst teammates Benjamin Ayache and Tyler Neal also significantly contributed to the win with 3 goals each. For the Sharks, Joel Kennedy and Jarrod Newton were the ones that found the goals with one goal each. In the best for the JOCs were Tyler Neal, Nicholas Terrill and Daniel Cattolico. In the best for the Sharks were Blake Reardon, Jacob Rose and Joel Kennedy. The JOCs will now face the Demons in what will be a do-or-die clash where if they win, they have a chance but if they lose, they are out. The Sharks will finish off their season in a home clash against the Bulls where they will look to be the first team to take out North Brunswick this season.

De La Salle upset Xavs whilst SBMT return serve against Old Brighton

The middle order of U19 Premier section is on a constant merry-go-round. The sixth placed De La Salle were able to topple the reigning premiers in Old Xavierians who are sitting in second. The top four sides now sit two matches clear of any other side, though two tumultuous rounds remain in which anything can happen.

Williamstown secured an important win and now sit in fifth, clinging on to a 2023 finals berth. De La Salle are on par with the former, each have accumulated eight wins, but the CYs possess a healthier and more superior percentage. They will meet in round 18 in which will be one of the fiercest matches of the season.

University Blues def by. Caulfield Grammarians by 19 points.

Caulfield travelled to Carlton North on Saturday and continued their stellar run of form. Their efficiency at both ends of the ground has been comprehensively evident throughout second half of the season. Uni have faced a somewhat opposite trajectory to Caulfield this season. They started relatively strong but have slightly declined. They now sit in seventh.

To their credit, Uni hang with the inform CGs for majority of the contest. They utilised Crawford Oval relatively well but were unable to halt the rampaging Grammarians. The consistent A. Dowsley slotted two majors and now sits second in the league for goal kicking.

Caulfield have solidified themselves as a legitimate premiership contender and now sit in fourth, tied with St Bedes. Their tremendous late season form was further exemplified in this matchup. J. Wallace, O. Fox, L. Duffy, O. Ruddock, O. Sail & T. Warner starred up the ground whilst M. Olynyk continued his superb individual form up forward.

Uni will host St Bernards at home this weekend. Caulfield takes on Williamstown at Glen Huntly Oval.

Williamtown CYMS def. Old Scotch by 10 points.

The CYs secured an important win after a slow start at Fearon Reserve last Saturday. They now sit in fifth and are gripping onto a final’s appearance this season. Scotch was again up to the level and very competitive, but unable to secure the end result.

Williamstown took a hold of the game after quarter time. Utilising their home ground to its full advantage. The notable inclusion of H. Miller was an undeniable gamechanger for the CYs. He hasn’t been sighted at U19 level since April after starring at senior level, he slotted in five a comprehensive best on ground performance. Miller was the Round 9 Anytime Fitness Men’s Rising Star and stood tall as the difference in Williamstown defeating Old Scotch last weekend.

Old Scotch will be disappointed to have let this potential victory through their grasp. Their season has had plenty of positive signs, but their inability to put together a four-quarter performance has been costly. The absence of power forward H. Robenstone due to suspension has proved costly at the pointy end of the season. R. Beckworth, S. Norman, M. Allen,

ROUND 17 TIPS

H. Long, H. Byrne-Jones & C. Ferguson were best afield for Scotch in a tight loss.

Williamstown face the hot Caulfield Grammarians in round 17. Old Scotch will verse Old Brighton in an important match.

De La Salle def. Old Xaverians by 14 points.

The upset of the season at Waverly Oval! The tables have turned for the ever trying De La Salle. A well-orchestrated team performance from top to bottom was executed to knock off the ever-consistent Xavs. Xavier entered the second term scoreless and were unable to wrestle back control of the game.

De La looked primed from the outset and were able to nail the majority of their scoring shots, an issue that’s faltered them for much of the season. The inclusion of T. Filiopovic who usually features in De La’s senior side was instrumental. He and his brother S. Filipovic were judged best afield for the winning side. This win puts De La on the cuff of finals in 2023. A deflating loss for the reigning premiers who would’ve been banking on this win heading into finals. They’ll look to reassess ahead of the next fortnight. D. Calvert, W. Exell, C. Bourne, M. Mahommed & H. Woodhouse were all admirable in a losing side.

De La Salle host SBMT this weekend at the Dairy Bell. Xavs have a tough task ahead, hosting SKOBs at home.

St Bedes / Mentone Tigers def. Old Brighton by 12 points. The Tigers returned serve to their Beach Road rival on the weekend. After dishing out a poor performance against Old Brighton earlier this year, SBMT looked like a different side in this fierce win. Though the ninth placed Brighton competed with more flair than a team traditionally sitting second last.

St Bedes typical efficiency in front of goal stood strong for the first three quarters. Old Brighton chased down the Tigers in the last quarter, but they were able to hang on, securing an important win. SBMT have a real opportunity to achieve back-to-back premierships, which is no easy feat in Premier division. J. Turner was best afield for the winning side, his dominance through the midfield has been impressive all season.

Old Brighton is a team to watch in 2024. Tight losses like these will be used to motivate them heading into next season. K. Dimattina was best afield for Old Brighton upon his return from senior duties.

SBMT will play the curtain raiser at Waverly Oval this Saturday against De La Salle. Old Brighton will play Old Scotch at 9:20am at Brighton Beach.

St Kevin’s def by. St Bernards by 62 points.

St Kevin’s banked an important percentage boost against St Bernards in round 16. St Bernards forward line are capable of kicking sufficient scores but aren’t getting the consistent delivery they need. Unfortunately, the Snowdogs still remain winless in 2023.

St Kevin’s sit two wins clear of the pack and have their eyes firmly fixated on a grand final appearance this season. Games like this have illustrated their talent and athleticism across every line. G. Delimitrou was a clear best afield with 3 majors and plenty of quality possession.

Another loss for St Bernards but there are positives to take out of this contest. Their prowess up forward can’t be questioned. Their accuracy all year has been evident, but they just need to maximise the quantity of scores kicked. D. Gilham & S. Guida combined for five goals.
