SEASON 2023 - September 2
CELEBRATION TIME!
Congratulations to the experienced campaigners from De La Salle who took out the 2023 VAFA Mecwacare Masters Premiership, after defeating the famous ‘Bald Eagles’ from Marcellin, in perfect conditions at Elsternwick Park last Sunday. The game was played in great spirit and it was terrific to see the well supported blue and gold lads enjoyed the post-game celebrations with their families and friends.
This weekend sees ten more VAFA Premiership Cups up for grabs in the following sections:
- Women’s Division 1, 2 & 3 at Elsternwick Park on Sunday
- Women’s Division 4 at Piranha Park Coburg on Saturday
- Men’s Thirds Premier, Division 1 & 2 at Bill Lawry Oval Northcote on Sunday
- Men’s Division 3 at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday
- Men’s Division 4 at Piranha Park Coburg on Sunday
- Men’s Division 5 at Garvey Oval Parade Bundoora on Sunday
We wish all participants the best of luck!
As well as enjoying the on-field action, September provides for many opportunities for our VAFA Community to come together and celebrate off the field.
The first of these events is the annual William Buck VAFA Finals Luncheon to be held on Friday 8th September at Zinc at Federation Square in the City. This event is conducted on the eve of both the AFL Finals series and the VAFA William Buck Premier Men’s finals series. An entertaining day is ensured for all guests, with Nat Edwards this year hosting Jarryd Roughead and Daisy Thomas sharing their stories and giving their thoughts on the AFL Finals, and VAFA Media’s own Joey Pignataro and Josh Heriot providing insights into the 2023 VAFA finals
Jason ReddickCEOseries. Last remaining tickets are now available via the VAFA website.
We will also continue with our tradition of hosting VAFA Premier Grand Final Day Functions at Elsternwick Park, preceding both the William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final on Sunday 17th September and the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final on Sunday 24th September. Both these events are a perfect build up to the main game, where guests from the competing Clubs and the VAFA Community will hear the inside word and thoughts from the coaches of the competing teams.
In the week following the conclusion of the Premier Grand Finals, Joey Pignataro will host the 2023 VAFA Awards Show which will be broadcast through radio RSN and streamed on the VAFA website. This live-to-air broadcast is a great platform for us to announce the best and fairest winners and leading goal kickers for all VAFA senior sections (excluding William Buck Premier Men’s & Women’s), Holmesglen Under 19s and Mecwacare Masters ahead of the Awards Night.
As the pinnacle VAFA event for the year, recognising individual success, the traditional VAFA Awards Night is attended by over 400 guests, and will this year be held at the Victory Room at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday 27th September. A compulsory event for all VAFA Clubs to be represented at, this is a terrific opportunity for our VAFA community to come together and celebrate the 2023 season and pay respect to the performances of the award winners from each section. Tickets are now on sale via the VAFA website.
We look forward to the Amateur community coming together to celebrate each of these wonderful occasions.
We wish all participants the best of luck!Joe Pignataro
Finals fever hits William Buck Premier a week early
For the final time in the home and away season, this is it. Our top four sides have been confirmed, the final finishing order is still anyone’s guess. At the bottom end of the table, Old Melburnians and Old Haileybury will have one eye on their respective games, and the other on what’s going on over the fence.
Fitting that a finals type atmosphere will follow both those games as we enter the first weekend of spring.
The RSN Xtra Match of the Day will also be accompanied by a finals like atmosphere at the Harry Trott Oval.
Collegians are the minor premiers in 2023. A professional, aggressive display against St Kevin’s last weekend sealed the spot at the top of the ladder. Although it’s fair to argue that they’ve been in this position from a long way out, it was only a matter of time.
Old Scotch will enter this match up in second spot. A fortnight of high scoring has put them back into the top echelon in 2023. This is setup to be a grandstand finish.
The Cardinals finished the 2022 season in sixth spot with eight wins. It was enough of a leverage for former host of the VAFA’s For the Love of the Game podcast Brian Waldron to commit to them being “in the window” in 2023.
Mark Gnatt has a worthy nomination form when it comes to discussing the coach of the year throughout the home and away season. He has boosted the confidence of his young brigade, confirmed the inner-belief of the senior members of the side, never shied away from poor performances and tough conversations with his players throughout the year.
In Round 15 they failed in the “big moments” against St Kevin’s. The opportunity that awaits the Cardinals on Saturday with similar moments set to unfold is a chance at redemption. A win at the Harry Trott Oval, against the odds, would give the Cardinals a double chance and a springboard for a big tilt in September.
Whether both sides show their full hand, or hold back a couple of aces in the pack will be revealed at 1:00pm on Saturday.
The intrigue around the final finishing positions of the top four, is only outweighed by the amount of discussion that’s focused on the bottom places of the ladder.
Old Haileybury put themselves in the box seat to remain in William Buck Premier beyond this year after beating the Old Xaverians on the weekend.
If they want to completely assure themselves of partaking in the VAFA’s topflight in 2024, a win at all cost mentality must come into play against St Kevin’s this Saturday.
St Kevin’s are still a mathematical chance of finishing second, but will most likely finish in a spot that becomes a cut-throat final.
Entering this finals series, winning form is the only form Plugger Lynch is interested in.
Seven changes to the line-up last weekend, perhaps an imbalance after having a steady side for a month. Second week for those inclusions, one week out from finals, at TH King Oval is a promising prospect for SKOB.
In Round 1, Old Haileybury took St Kevin’s to within a point to open the season. If they do the same here, the percentage gap to OM’s will remain a factor, however with Paul Satterley’s men taking on Caulfield, that gap will likely close quickly.
The travelling fans of the Bloods will be barracking hard, and out in full force.
They have experience of playing in September with their backs against the wall, the 2022 Premier B campaign has the unlikely winners from half-time of the first semi-final vs. Fitzroy, right through to the final siren on Grand Final day.
Can they produce a historic victory for the club at a ground that will give them no favours?
Old Melburnians know the first part of the assignment. WIN. There’s no two ways about it. If Caulfield Grammarians produce an upset, both sides will be heading to Premier B in 2024.
The next phase of the assignment for OM’s is to win well. They need to make up one game and 4% on Old Haileybury.
The last month, the Fields average losing margin sits at 138 points. However, Old Melburnians can’t afford to expect this to just happen for them. The Fields have run into St Kevin’s (fourth), Uni Blues (third), Old Brighton (fifth) and Old Scotch (second) in that month.
It will take the best performance of the year from OM’s in their final one. Paul Satterley knows the atmosphere that a game like this will bring, and what’s in store should victory come to fruition. OM’s haven’t been to Premier B since 2015, he’ll be hellbent on keeping it that way.
Caulfield will be heading back, regardless of the result. It’s been a year of uphill battles for the Fields. The return to Premier B, for the first time since 2019 will see the side reset, regroup, and build again for a fresh tilt at William Buck Premier in 12 months time.
Guy McKenna has had a look under the bonnet throughout the year, this summer he’ll go about looking for fresh parts to rebuild the Caulfield car.
Como Park will be the final makeshift home ground for the Old Xaverians in 2023. Playing host to Old Brighton in a match that will determine the finishing order in the middle of the table.
The red and black mafia will be seeing off James Byrne after this contest, with the intention to finish the game in style and with a win. The Centenary season hasn’t played out the way anyone at Xav’s would’ve hoped it to.
Old Brighton went into the year headstrong on reclimbing the mountain to go one better than runners up in 2022. When Dan Donati joined the club as the coach leading into the pre-season, the excitement to get back there was palpable.
After Round 6, the Tonners sat 5-1 having beaten St Kevin’s at TH King Oval. They’re sitting fifth with 9-8 next to their name now. Four wins from the past 11 weeks. Injuries, travel, VFL exclusions haven’t helped the cause in the slightest.
These two sides finished inside the top four last year, both sides will feel disappointed they’re not back there again this year.
When the previous two Woodrow Medallist meet in the middle of the ground to toss the coin and shake hands, maybe they’ll agree on a shootout of sorts, a bruise-free encounter and put on a high-scoring show for the fans that make their way out.
But then again, Harry Hill & Marcus Stavrou are the ultimate competitors so the aforementioned line might just be wishful thinking.
After 89 home and away games, the final one to preview belongs to the long-standing rivalry of University Blues and University Blacks
In the second week of the season, it was billed as a ding-dong battle. Heading into Round 18, it’s a killer-diller. This is not just a run of the mill Saturday afternoon stroll before the finals for Blues. Nor is it for Blacks.
There’s an underlying spice between these two sides. Blacks can relegate the Blues to a knockout final against the reigning premiers next week if they get over the top of the cross changeroom rivals.
A Blues victory, with an eye on Collegians beating Scotch will see Guy Martyn’s men finish second, and a double chance in September.
Not much will need to be said in the lead-up to motivate either Uni side. Dale Bower can complete a 50% winning record in 2023 with victory. Nine wins, nine losses. A side promoted to William Buck Premier from Premier B in the opening season, you’d take that 99 times out of 100.
This is the one game that will be won at the contest. Dual Woodrow Medallist Ayce Cordy, against the Big V powerhouse Josh Steadman. If you’re in the Parkville area on Saturday, get down to this one.
September. The best month of the year. The grounds are a little firmer, the sun stays out a little longer, and the footy is played between the best of the best.
Finals have come early for us in William Buck Premier. Each club will taste September action, with their own little storyline that will determine their future beyond this weekend.
Whether it be the fight for survival, the fight for a double chance, or the fight for the individual accolades this weekend, it’s been a season like no other and we’re only getting started.

Purple army set for finals appearance
Round 18 has shaken things up in the William Buck Premier Women’s competition with Caulfield missing out on a top four spot only be percentage, while Kew dominated St Kevin’s in what could have been a Grand Final preview.
The round kicked off with Caulfield Grammarians hosting Coburg in what was a must-win for the Grammarians to earn themselves a spot in finals. Alas, it wasn’t to be and with Coburg too strong on the day, Caulfield fall just short of that fourth placed finish on the ladder.
Coburg are to be commended for their final performance of the 2023 home and away season. They started uncharacteristically slow only registering a single behind and took an 11-point deficit into the first huddle.
Although Caulfield had a strong start out of the gates with 2 straight goals, they relinquished their lead in the second and struggled to get back in the game from that point. Chloe O’Malley had another 2-goal match, while Matilda Mottram and Jessie Mount fought hard for their side in a devastating loss.
Coburg ran away 8-point victors thanks to Teagan Brett and Ruby Tarranto who shared the load in front of the big sticks.
Coburg finish the season in sixth whilst Caulfield will be looking to do one better on their fifth-place finish next season.
Victoria Park was home to the match of the round on the weekend as top of the table Kew hosted the reigning premiers St Kevin’s. The last time they met back in round 8, Kew got the advantage over their rival by a mere 2 points.
The contest was neck and neck early at 7-points apiece. SKOB turned up the heat in the second and were able to carry a lead all the way through to three-quarter time. One could say they were in the driver’s seat heading into the final term with Emily Condon and Catherine Stanton at the helm.
Hungry to retain that minor premiership position, Kew ramped it up and kicked 5-straight in the fourth to overrun St Kevin’s. Kew had seven individual goal kickers who helped to get the job done, spearheaded by Ashlea Melnikas with 2.
The question on everyone’s lips lingers, is this a preview of what is to come in finals, and will any team be able to stop the in-form Kew Bears?
Kew and St Kevin’s will have their rematch as soon as next weekend in the Semi Finals that will put one of them straight through to the big dance, whilst the other will be fighting in the second chance preliminary final.
Heading into the weekend, Collegians were very much still in finals contention and needed to secure the win at Harry Trott oval over Melbourne Uni Women’s to be in with a chance for that fourth spot.
Collegians were dominant from the outset with a 2.2 first quarter, closely trailed by Melbourne Uni’s 1.2 opener. Heading into the main break, Collegians had an extra goal under their belt whilst Uni sat on 8 points. Rebecca grant had 2 majors for the day and Aoife Geaney was best afield for the purple army.
Bridget Hudson arguably had her best game of the season against a challenging Collegians outfit, named as the best on, with a goal to round out the day.
It was the Collegians who were in front by 18 points at the final siren, with this victory ultimately securing them that illustrious finals appearance, with other results going their way.
To round out the 18th weekend of the season, West Brunswick came up against Old Scotch who were looking to continue their pre-bye winning streak. Already set to play in finals, the Stars were simply looking to add the cherry on top of a comprehensive season.
West Brunswick had kicked 2.1 to half time, and unfortunately that’s where it ended for the Westies, unable to hit the scoreboard in the second half. At the other end the Stars had much of the ball, registering another 6 majors for the match to run away victors 75 to 13.
Just when we thought Lucy Morley had shown us her best of the season in round 17, she went two better to kick 6 majors in another best on ground performance.
The Westies have produced a very well-rounded season, finishing only one win behind fourth place, and are not to be underestimated heading into 2024. Meanwhile, the Stars job is not done just yet, as they head into a Semi Final at Piranha Park against Collegians.
Fitzroy had a bye on the weekend and finish the season in ninth.

Josh Heriot Access Team Lists on GameDay via VAFA.com.auFinals football on the line in round 18 with the four yet to be decided
September is on our doorstep and for Premier B the final round of football is shaping up to be an exciting contest with must win games across the board.
Round 17 began with an enormous win to Old Geelong at Como Park against Monash Blues. The winning margin fell out to 120 points with Old Geelong’s Harrison Kol starring in front of goal with seven majors. The home side had a particularly strong second half where fourteen goals were kicked. Jack Sheridan helped the charge and set up much of the play while both Sam Dixon and Sam Barnett both assisted the scoring power with three goals each. Alex Bennett was best for Monash was showed fight along with James Flett who finished with two goals.
St Bernards just continue to perform and again they recorded another big win over Old Trinity. A ten-goal last quarter stung Old Trinity with the Snowdogs finishing with ten individual goal kickers. Among them was star player Charlie Vague kicking three along with Fergus McNicol. Jordan Farrell continued his outstanding season with yet another best on ground performance. For Trinity, Christos Manoussakis was gallant in the contest as he was named their best with Luke Scobie sharp down forward with three goals.
Williamstown CYMS were able to give the second placed Fitzroy a scare with The Roys only scraping clear to win by thirteen points. Williamstown stuck with Fitzroy for much of the afternoon as the travelling side trailed by one point at the final change. The Roys had plenty of scoring power however, with twelve goal kickers hitting the scoreboard. Donovan Toohey led from the front for Fitzroy with a best on ground performance while Williamstown’s trio William Smyth, Oskar Manton and Jack Briskey all kicked three each. Jack Noonan was Williamstown’s best player as he lined up for the fifteenth time this season.
Beaumaris were able to back up this week with another comfortable win, this time over Ajax. The Sharks were helped in their forward department by Ben Hempel and Matt Harms who both concluded the afternoon with a bag of 6 while James Freeman had four goals to his name. Matt Harms was ultimately their best player also with the Sharks trying to push into September with momentum and solidify a spot. Ajax played valiantly during the first half of play with Richie Simon booting three and Toby Sheezel also providing excellent service with a best on ground display.
The final match of the penultimate round proved to be the closest match with De La Salle prevailing by only three points over St Bedes/Mentone. The Tigers rallied a late charge which saw them kick 7 goals in the final term and keeping their opposition goalless. The three-quarter time margin of 44 points was well and truly cut with the home side clinging on to what was a big victory for their finals campaign. The Tigers’ scoring power was on display and caused havoc in the De La Salle defence with Caleb Lewis kicking 6, adding to his growing tally of 41 and Jack Behnk kicking three. For De La Salle, Patrick Bohan led from the front as he was named their best and kicked two goals.
What does round 18 look like? The biggest clash of the weekend will be at the Brunswick Street Oval when Fitzroy play De La Salle. Old Geelong will be playing Ajax for one last chance at cracking into the four while Beaumaris will be trying to solidify a spot as they play Trinity. While the chances are marginal the Tigers will need other results to go their way but will also need to win to continue their season. With finals chances on the line, the weekend is one that promises to be exciting with Saturday night to be a telling moment as the four will be all but locked up.

Monash Blues blitz the opposition to blaze into finals
Mazenod finished their season on a high, while other teams could not withhold the power of the Premier B Women’s finalists. The top 3 went out with a bang while others fell short in their final appearance for the home and away season.
The mighty Monash Blues have topped the ladder this season, after stealing Brunswick’s final match out from under them.
Even with Clare Woodhouse’s persistent efforts, Brunswick was unable to withhold the power of the Blues.
Creating a 156-point-margin, the Blues created some magic over the weekend with an outstanding 4 goals kicked from Emma Draffin and Molly Mcfarlane, while Emily Conroy was named best afield.
The semi-final will bring the top two competitors together, when the Blues take on the Cobras.
North Brunswick and Mazenod OC headed into this match up knowing it would be their last run for the 2023 season. Mazenod reigned supreme and finished on a high.
While their season has been quite unfortunate, Madeleine Bentely and Jackie Vell kicked a goal each while Caitlin Holzheimer scored two goals and Celeste Ramnac earned herself best on ground for North Brunswick.
Generating the 24-point margin for Mazenod was Emma Hopkins who booted four goals, Lara Del Conte who scored two and Laura Gartland who kicked one, with Stephanie Smith receiving best-player, in her final match of the season.
North Brunswick finished 8th on the ladder while Mazenod finished in 6th.
The St Bedes/Mentone Tigers fell short this week in their match against Aquinas OC, with a 19-point margin between the final scores.
Another player who scored four goals in round 18 was Melanie Hogg, who was also Aquinas’ best player and worked alongside Holly Spicer, who assisted leading her team to victory.
Although the Tigers struggled to suppress the force of Aquinas, Tanisha Binios and Elisa Canzantariti were able to rack up a goal each while Madeleine Tilley put on a best-player performance.
Can Aquinas steal the show again in next week’s semifinal rematch, or can the Tigers rise to the occasion?
Stealing the glory in Richmond Centrals final game for the season was the Old Yarra Cobras who attained 9 goals and 10 behinds in comparison to Richmond’s one goal and two behinds.
Making the most of their final appearance for this season was Christie Brewis who scored Richmond’s only goal, while Kellie Birkette was deemed best afield.
Iliana Zafiriou scored five of the Cobras nine goals, while Tahlia Limburg scored two, Alannah Murray and Clare Moody kicked one each, and Mia Gianoppoulos earned herself best-player.
It was Iliana Zafiriou who managed to finish the season with a total of 33 goals, making her the leader of Premier B womens.
Only six goals behind, was Laura Amelung, with Molly Mcfaralane in third with a total of 23 goals.

Old Camberwell locks in top spot as epic race for top two heats up
Round 17 of the Premier C Men’s competition has not only crowned the minor premiers but also paved the way for an electrifying Round 18, brimming with anticipation and intrigue.
In a contested first half between Old Camberwell and Marcellin, the scales tipped dramatically in Old Camberwell’s favor during the second half. A remarkable seven-goal surge, in contrast to Marcellin’s solitary goal, propelled Old Camberwell to a resounding 49-point victory.
Jay Kennedy-Harris emerged as a standout player, delivering a remarkable five goals for Old Camberwell. This decisive win has now firmly secured their welldeserved minor premiership for the 2023 season in the Premier C Men’s competition.
However, for Marcellin, this contest represented a missed opportunity—one that could have solidified their escape from the specter of relegation. The looming Round 18 clash against Old Carey takes on added significance, as they may now require a victory to entirely avert the relegation scenario.
While Old Camberwell finds themselves primed for an impactful finals series, they have one final tune-up against Parkdale in Round 18. Although this fixture may serve as a preview for the finals, it bears noting that the outcome will not alter the positions of either team on the ladder.
Meanwhile, Old Ivanhoe and PEGS both managed to secure vital victories against bottom three teams, setting the stage for a monumental showdown in Round 18.
This contest will determine who secures a coveted top two position, earning the privilege of a qualifying final against Old Camberwell with the safety net of a second chance or, alternatively, the prospect of an elimination final against the in-form Parkdale.
Old Ivanhoe faced off against Old Carey in a game they controlled from start to finish. Holding a 21-point lead at three-quarter time, Old Ivanhoe managed to keep Old Carey scoreless in the final quarter while adding three goals of their own to seal a commanding 40-point victory.
Luke Scuderi and William Murphy were standout performers for Old Ivanhoe, each contributing three goals.
Old Carey, on the other hand, looks to conclude the season on a positive note as they prepare to take on Marcellin in their final match of the season.
PEGS, in their encounter against Ormond, maintained control throughout the match as well to secure a convincing 45-point win. PEGS demonstrated a well-rounded, team-focused performance, with nine different players contributing goals.
Like Marcellin, Ormond missed an opportunity to make their bid for avoiding relegation less challenging. Now, they face a must-win situation in Round 18 against the Hampton Rovers to potentially climb out of the bottom of the ladder and steer clear of relegation.
The final fixture of the round unfolded as a highscoring spectacle between Mazenod and the Hampton Rovers. Although neither team is set for finals this year, they displayed their intent to contend in the 2024 season with an entertaining contest.

Christian Carnovale, Max Van Der Straaten, and Liam O’Driscoll all played pivotal roles, each contributing three goals in the Rovers’ triumph.
With one round remaining, there’s still plenty at stake in Premier Men’s C.

De La Salle come from behind in an epic Mecwacare Masters Grand Final
The second Premiers of 2023 were crowned last weekend, with De La Salle winning the Mecwacare Masters Grand Final, by 16 points over the minor-Premiers Marcellin. It was an intriguing contest at Elsternwick Park, with the ‘Bald Eagles’ leading for the majority of the game – up by 15 at quarter time and 27 at half time. DLS began to take control in the second half as Marcellin fatigued, reducing the margin to 14 at the final change, and booting five goals to zip in the last to claim the flag! Corey Wilson snagged five in a best on ground performance.
The VAFA is looking to expand its over-35 competition in 2024 –interested clubs should get in touch with the football operations team to express their interest.
Laura Kane climbs
the
ranks
Former President at Melbourne University Women’s Football Club Laura Kane has been the AFL’s interim football boss since Brad Scott left the role last year to coach Essendon and has now been appointed permanently.
Kane has become one of the most senior deputies to incoming CEO Andrew Dillon at the AFL.
“I’m really proud,” Kane told reporters on Monday.
“I feel thankful that the industry has supported me from the outside to come in and work my way through a club, across men’s and women’s football, and have a wonderful experience in the process.
“To look around and see female presidents, female CEOs, female executives ... it’s a really big moment for women in our game.”
Time to hang up the whiteboard
It’s that time of the year where coaches decide whether or not to continue beyond the 2023 season.
Long-time coaches of Kew and Fitzroy FC have announced it’s time to move onto the next chapter of their lives, whilst Old Paradians will also be on the lookout for a new coach in 2024.
Carlton legend Ian Aitken has decided after 12 years of immense years of service to Kew FC, coaching hundreds upon hundreds of young men and yielding 5 premiership medals he will be hanging up the whiteboard.
Beaser leaves behind a legacy that is unquantifiable and will live for many, many years to come. His famous trademark qualities of uncompromising competitiveness, fierce passion and pure desire to get the best out of every individual that is fortunate enough to land on his magnet board have ultimately changed the fabric of the club.
Luke Mahoney announced that after six years at Fitzroy, he has made the difficult decision to step down from the senior coaching position.
Luke explained that his decision is not outcome-based. But with family and work commitments ever increasing, realises he can’t meet the effort required in 2024. And that if, as he hopes and expects, the club makes it into A Grade, he would expect more of himself.
This is the mark of the man. Mahn’s was awarded the 2022 AFL Victoria Coach of the Year.
Old Paradians have farewelled Justin Whitcher after their last game on Saturday. “Whitch” came in at the start of 2022 and brought a level of professionalism, experience and footy knowledge that helped the team reach the Prelim Final. All at the OPs wish “Whitch” all the very best in his future endeavours and thank him for his two years of service at our Club.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Erin Hopkins (Mazenod OC)
The VAFA congratulates Erin Hopkins from Mazenod OC Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 18 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Erin had a breakout performance on the weekend with 4 goals in her fourth senior game, earning her a spot in the best afield.
What the club said:
Erin Hopkins has come to Mazenod Women’s football in season 2023 through friends playing at the club, with no history of playing football at all. Her sporting background was in basketball, which was evident from day one in her strong marking and body work in the ruck. In her first year of football she had some early opportunities to play senior football but for most of the season played in the reserves.
She got her late season call up on the back of some marked improvement and her focus and dedication to working by herself to improve her skills. This has resulted in her playing in the senior team at full forward for the last two games of the regular season, and kicking goals in both games.
Senior Women’s Coach Stell Michael says, “Erin came to us raw at the start of the season but from day one showed great potential. Whilst she spent most of the season learning her craft in the reserves she is a dedicated trainer and always does the extra work. This combined with her rapid improvement towards the end of the season meant when available she was an automatic selection as a key forward in the senior team. Her four goals against North Brunswick were on the back of good movement, strong marks and incredibly clean finishing. All this after only one season, the sky is really the limit for her.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Joshua Torouno (Bulleen Templestowe)
The VAFA congratulates Joshua Torouno from Bulleen Templestowe Amateur Football Club, who has received the Men’s Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 18. Josh has had a consistent first year in the seniors where he has featured in the best on an impressive 8 occasions, with a handy 5 goals for the season.
What the club said:
Senior Coach Andrew Verga, said “Josh is astute with ball in hand with damaging electric skills. He has embraced multiple roles throughout the season. and is tough, tenacious and the ultimate team man. An absolute beauty!”

Oakleigh Krush the Gryphons heading into the first weekend of September
Oakleigh have given Glen Eira one almighty scare heading into September. The Gryphons, knowing they couldn’t move from top spot, could be forgiven for having one eye on the finals with a game that didn’t change their fate in the slightest.
For the Krushers, a win has allowed them the right to a double chance finishing second and the opportunity to face the Gryphons again this weekend.
After a three goal to nil opening term Oakleigh put the foot down with 10 goals in the second term to put the game well and truly beyond doubt.
A 76-point half-time lead, turned into 89 at three quarter time before finishing 104 points ahead of the ladder leaders.
A bag of five from Aaron Cloke was enough to consolidate him as the top of the competition’s sharpshooter award. Outshone on the day by teammate Luke Ashen with six.
Did Oakleigh play their hand too early? We’ll find out whether this victory spurs them on this Saturday or if the Gryphons get back to their premiership favourite best.
UHS-VU will see September action after overcoming Therry Penola by 24 points on Saturday. Starting the round in fourth spot, the fifth placed UHS got the jump on the Lions and held them to just a solitary goal in the first half as they opened up a 31-point lead at the main change.
Therry closed to within three goals at three quarter time, but the hopes of a comeback were nullified as UHS regathered the momentum in the final quarter.
Harrison Kennedy was named the best player on the ground, supported by Archie Frazer and Jeff Fox.
It’s been a heartbreaking month for Therry Penola, losing their final three games to miss September. They’ll have a summer of what if’s that will burn in the back of their minds as they prepare for season 2024.
The boys of Uni High will take on Prahran at Garvey Oval on Sunday for a spot in the Preliminary Final. They haven’t
been able to bridge the gap between the Two Blues throughout the home and away season, but finals is a different ball game altogether.
Prahran FC will enter the knockout final upbeat and full of confidence after finishing Ivanhoe AFC’s time in the VAFA with a 45-point victory.
The margin could have been much greater as Prahran had all the play in the opening term, keeping the opposition goalless and kicking 6.9.45 themselves. The margin was pulled back during the second term, before the momentum went back the way of the home side.
Jonathan Simonetta kicked a bag of five. August has been kind to Simonetta, kicking 17 goals from the four matches. He’ll be hoping September is equally as fruitful.
Ivanhoe AFC bid farewell to the VAFA, after joining the VAFA in 1934 they made the decision to move the club elsewhere in 2024. Last year they claimed the Division 2 title, the clubs first senior flag since 1969.
Prahran FC will be looking for a tenth straight win when the ball is bounced on Sunday and going into the game sky high with confidence.
Kew were able to farewell their coach Ian Aitken in style with a comfortable 40-point win over West Brunswick
After 12 years of leading the Kew Bears that brought about 5 Premiership medals it was time for Beaser to put the whistle down and they left the coach with one big smile on his face.
Getting the jump on the Magpies was the dream start for the Bears, and by three quarter time with a 59-point lead, the Bears could enjoy the fruits of Beaser’s labour over a number of years.
The club paid tribute to Aitken on the Bears’ Instagram page this week saying “What Beaser leaves behind at the Bear Cave is a legacy that is unquantifiable and will live on for many, many years to come. His famous trademark qualities of uncompromising competitiveness, fierce passion and pure desire to get the best out of every
individual that is fortunate enough to land on his magnet board have ultimately changed the fabric of our club.”
Congratulations Ian, on everything you’ve achieved.
West Brunswick will remain in Division 1 for 2024 after finishing the year with four wins from the year. They’ll no doubt take learnings away from what they have established in 2023 after being in Division 2 for consecutive seasons.
Old Peninsula were on track for a massive score against the Preston Bullants after kicking nine goals in the opening quarter.
Nelson Forrest and Bailey Payze were pivotal players in the forward line for the Pirates sharing seven goals across the day.
The Bullants hit the scoreboard after quarter time to be within touching distance at the final change, before the Pirates got one last wind in the sails and they finished off strongly with a 57-point win.
The Bullants finish the year in ninth position on the ladder after falling from Premier C at the end of last year.
The Pirates have got youth at their disposal that would leave the die-hard fans excited over summer for what’s in store when they take to the field in March next year.
For now, all eyes will be on Glen Eira, Oakleigh, Prahran FC and UHS-VU. Each side with a story of their own.
UHS-VU keen for a quick bounce back up to Premier C, Prahran FC have spent the year as nomads without a home ground, Glen Eira is desperate to reach the big dance after the heartbreak of 2022 while Oakleigh are in their first finals series since 2019.

Preliminary Final: Marcellin scramble Omelettes to secure place in Grand Final
All eyes were on Elsternwick Park Oval on Saturday, as Marcellin OC and Old Melburnians battled it out in the Division 1 Women’s Preliminary Final, with a spot in the Grand Final up for grabs.
Marcellin got the better of Old Melburnians early, with their superior accuracy in front of goals allowing them a 10-point lead going into the first break. Old Melburnians responded with their first goal of the day in the second term, reducing the margin to 6 points before the siren signalled half time.
Marcellin came out in the third with all guns blazing, kicking 3.2 while Old Melburnians only managed a single behind. Trailing by 25 points, it was going to take some magic from the Omelettes to make up the deficit.
Knowing their season was on the line and with nothing to lose, the Omelettes produced some of their best football of the year to kick four goals in the final term. Alas, they had left their charge too late, and with Marcellin booting another two goals, the Omelettes fell 13 points short at the final siren.
Charlotte Ferrier was the best of the Omelettes, supported by teammates Stephanie Barnett and Clare Fraser. For the Sheagles, Zoe Glascott delivered an inspiring performance to help her side over the line, kicking five goals to be named best afield.
Marcellin will now meet Beaumaris in the Grand Final this Saturday, in what is sure to be a thrilling encounter.
Both teams have previously tasted premiership success in the VAFA competition and while Beaumaris beat Marcellin comfortably in both of their previous match ups this year, Marcellin will be confident that they have found their form in this finals series. It will take everything they’ve got to bring down the undefeated Sharks, but as we know, anything is possible in finals football.

And just like that, we have our finalists.
What a season of football it has been in the Division 2 Men’s competition, with upsets, draws, multiple forwards booting 8+ goals in a game, and nail-biting victories; it really has had it all. And it’s not quite over for the top four, who perhaps face their toughest challenge yet as they battle it out for that illusive Premiership Cup.
The stakes were high on Saturday afternoon for Brunswick, as a win meant they would secure second position, which gifts them a second chance come finals. MHSOB were not going to bow out quietly and they made the Nobs really work hard for the win.
The boys from Melbourne High came out firing as they looked to finish the season strong, however just struggled to hold on for the full four quarters. Their 8 individual contributors on the scoreboard had them ahead by 1-point heading into the final term, when they were out-scored 4 goals to 1 in the last quarter with the Nobs coming away victorious by 19 points.
Will McKenzie found his best form again for the Nobs, while Tom Rendell was best on for the Unicorns for a second consecutive week.
Although there were no upsets this round, Old Paradians sure did come close to taking down the minor premiers in Parkside. A lesson sure to be learnt, that complacency is dangerous territory and Parkside will need to bring their best should they achieve their hopes come Grand Final day.
The contest was neck-and-neck throughout the match, with Old Paradians holding a small lead until the fourth and final quarter. The finesse of Parkside shone in the final leg, with 5 straight goals securing them the win. Unfortunately, the pressure got the better of Parade with their 8 scoring shots converting on the scoreboard to 3.5, falling just short by a mere 3 points.
Kyle Mahony and Luke Brock led the charge all day for Parade, while Marcus Nolan impacted the scoreboard with 3 majors, and Michael Boundy and Blair Healy both added 2 goals.
At the other end, Jack Hamilton has continued his starstudded season for Parkside with a bag of 4 goals and a spot in the best, alongside the ever-consistent Benedict Douglas who was best on with a goal of his own.
Heading to Koonung Park for what was scheduled to be a 2:00pm match, didn’t really get going until 2:30pm with neither side hitting the scoreboard in the opening term. Once both sides awoke from their slumber, the Old Yarra Cobras and St Mary’s Salesian managed to hit the scoreboard with four each for the second quarter.
The awakening continued at the half, as the third term saw goals coming in from all over. A 9 goal to 2 quarter in favour of the Cobras gave them a handy 40-point lead. The Cobras kept their foot on the gas all the way to the final siren extending their lead to double the score of the Saints, victorious by 56 points.
Three was the number of the day for the Cobras, with Jack Hall, David Tokatliyan, Kyle Margaritis, and Luke Stacker all kicking a trifecta of goals.
The Saints can hold their heads high for a valiant effort throughout the season, persevering through some tough losses, and securing some impressive victories. Jason Rubidge and Michael Flora were impressive on the weekend and wrapped up the season with strong individual performances for their side.
With the South Melbourne Districts precariously holding onto fourth spot, and the Whitefriars biting at their heels, a win meant all or nothing when they faced Bulleen Templestowe on the weekend.
Both sides fared well in the first term with just a goal in it, while in the second quarter the Bullants got the upper hand and took an 11-point lead into the main break. With a spot in finals on the line, the Bloods dug deep in the second half to turn the tables in their favour with a 6-goal quarter to the Bullants single major. With the help of Sam Bradford and Jamie Brooker, both with 4 majors for the day, the Bloods turn an 11-point deficit into a 20-point advantage in the space of a quarter.
Tom Foley is impacting just at the right time and will be able to put his craft on display in the finals as South Melbourne Districts ran home with a 15-point victory to round out the home and away season in fourth on the ladder.
Whitefriars can hold their heads high after a hard-fought battle against Aquinas. Whilst they absolutely demolished their opposition by 74 points, it unfortunately didn’t bolster their percentage quite enough to steal that top 4 spot, finishing just shy of the fourth-placed South Melbourne Districts.
The Friars came out firing in a high-stakes match up to take a 29-point lead into the first huddle, that would only be extended at each subsequent break. Whilst Aquinas couldn’t halt the Whitefriars onslaught, they did bring their competitive spirit to register 29 of their own scoring shots of the day. It seemed that accuracy was their downfall with just the 10 majors.
Whitefriar’s Daniel Wood is an A-lister in the Division 2 competition and he left if all out there on Saturday afternoon. Having played all-bar-one match for the season, a careerbest 11 goals against Aquinas has bolstered him to the leading goal kicker crown for 2023. Jaycob Baxter scored 4 for his side, supported by six other goal kickers.
Parkside, who takes home the minor premiership for the 2023 season, will come up against Brunswick in a SemiFinal this weekend to secure the first spot in the Grand Final. Whilst the losing side will go on to face the winner of Old Yarra Cobras v South Melbourne Districts.

The final round of VAFA Division 3 Men’s played out on Saturday, with the final four already set for September action.
First up, third-placed Canterbury exhibited their dominance against Swinburne University, securing a dominant victory. Canterbury’s were in control throughout, booting 29 goals to Swinburne’s seven. It was a close one at Sheehan Oval, with Richmond Central finishing their season with a narrow victory against a spirited La Trobe University. St Johns win when it matters most as Bulls end season on top
The first match of the round saw Box Hill North take on St Johns. Although the Demons had already secured their double chance, the JOCs had to win just to have a chance at securing their top 4 spot. The Demons started on the right foot as they got off to a great start with a 5-goal to 1 opening quarter to take a 22-point lead into the first break. In the second quarter, the Demons put together a good quarter but the JOCs truly began to turn on their boosters as they put together a huge 8-goal quarter. This massive quarter saw the JOCs bring the game back on even terms as they now held a 3-point lead as both teams went into the rooms for halftime.
The third quarter was a quality 30 minutes of football, as both sides were able to hit the scoreboard. The Demons were able to add on 4 goals in the quarter, the JOCs however, were able to put on 5 goals to their tally to extend their lead to 12 points, putting themselves in a great position to find their way into the finals. The final quarter saw both teams battle it out with tough and hardfought football. The Demons were able to find their way back into the game and even took a 4-point lead at one point, the JOCs however, were able to hit the scoreboard when it mattered most with an all-important goal to take back the lead. Following that goal, the JOCs were able to hold off the Demons and secure a 2-point win, doing all they could to have a chance at making finals.
The leading goal scorer for the Demons was Blake Williams who had 7 goals. Other multiple-goal kickers for the Demons were Jack Dullard (2), Samuel Roberts (2) and Thomas Cheslett (2). For the JOCs, Benjamin Ayache played his best game of the season when it mattered most with 7 goals. Corey Ely and Kailum Newland were also able to hit the scoreboard with 2 goals each. In the best for the Demons were Thomas Rickard, Ethan Hocking and Blake Williams. In the best for the JOCs were Michael Horton, Benjamin Ayache and Daniel Cattolico. The Demons will now face North Brunswick in a qualifying final in what looks to be a major matchup. The JOCs will now look to capitalise on their finals opportunity with a win against the Falcons, a side they do hold a win against this season.
The second match of the round saw opposite ends of the ladder meet as the first-placed North Brunswick faced the 6th-placed Eley Park. The Bulls came out with a point to prove as they took control of the first quarter with a 9-goal to 3 term that saw the Bulls head into the first break with a commanding 40-point lead. The Bulls would then once again take control of the game with a dominant 9-goal quarter extending their lead all the way out to 94 points, as the Bulls looked to make a statement to the rest of the division.
The third quarter saw the Bulls replicate their secondquarter efforts over the Sharks as they dominated from start to finish with a 10-goal to 1 quarter which saw the Bulls hold a 155-point lead as the siren for third quarter time sounded. The last quarter of the 2023 season for the Sharks saw them end their season bravely as they never gave up and even added a goal to their tally. The final quarter, however, was ultimately the Bulls’ show as with an extra 8 goals added to their tally, the Bulls were able to run out winners by 202 points, with the biggest winning margin this season in addition to the highest score in the division this season (240).
Aaron Williams had 2 goals for the Sharks, other goalkickers included Kane Scanlon, Bailey Bowyer, Ben Field and Mitchell Ross. For the Bulls, Andrew Ramzy dominated the day with 10 goals, and has jumped into pole position for the competition’s leading goal kicker. Mitchell Hicks and Jareth Ombiga were on fire with 5 goals each whilst Christopher Sanders and Luke Russell were also major contributors for the Bulls with 4 goals each. In the best for the Sharks were Aaron Williams, Jonathan Tennent and Callum Farquhar. In the best for the Bulls were Zac Dicianni, Simon Woodward and Mitchell Hicks. The Sharks will now look to make another jump in 2024 as they have a lot of players with plenty of upside and room to grow. The 2023 chapter of the Bulls would be titled ‘undefeated’, and they will hope to keep it this way as they face Box Hill North in a qualifying final.
The final match of the home and away season saw Albert Park take on Masala. A win for the Tigers would see them secure their spot in the finals but a loss would make them rely on a Box Hill North win. The Tigers got off to a great start with a 5-goal quarter whilst managing to
keep the Falcons to only 3 goals which saw the Tigers take a 19-point lead into quarter time. The second quarter saw the Falcons begin to take charge with a dominant display all over the ground. Although the Tigers did manage to score 6 goals of their own, the Falcons made the quarter theirs as they were able to pile on 11 goals, completely changing the game in the process. As the siren sounded to end the first half, it was the Falcons that went into the rooms with an 18-point lead.
The third quarter was one where it was all about the contested game. The majority of the ball was spent in the middle, and when it wasn’t there it was going end to end with both sides standing strong in defense. Both teams, however, were able to kick 2 goals for the quarter, keeping the Falcons with a slight lead of 17 points. Despite the Tigers giving their best in the fourth quarter and going in all-out attack mode, the Falcons were able to take control of the quarter with 4 goals, extending their lead to 30 points. With a few minutes left on the clock, word was getting around the oval about the St. Johns win. Masala gave it all they had in these final minutes, but it wasn’t enough to change the result. As the siren sounded, it was the Falcons who ran out winners by 30 points.
Jack Lee dominated up forward for the Falcons with 8 goals. Reece French-Lightfoot and Sam Lee also combined for 5 goals for the Falcons. For the Tigers, Dave Velardo played his best game of the season with 5 goals. Tiger duo Luke Broomhall and Luke Decarne kicked 2 goals each. In the best for the Falcons were Sam Lee, Alexander Evans and Drew Pearman. In the best for the Tigers were David Velardo, Karan Singh and Luke Broomhall. Albert Park will now face off against St Johns, a side that they defeated twice earlier in the season in an elimination final whilst the Tigers will reflect on what could’ve been in 2023 after winning 5 of their first 6, they would then go on to lose 7 of their last 8.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Mitch Szabo (Canterbury FC)
Aidan Franetic (Old Scotch)
Congratulations to Aidan Franetic on reaching 100 games for Old Scotch Football Club. Aidan joined the club from Scotch College in 2014 going straight into the Men’s 1st XVIII. Aidan had played for Box Hill and Oakleigh Chargers in his formative years. Aidan has been a regular member of the Men’s 1st XVIII throughout his career, a pivotal mid-fielder and leader of the team. Aidan played in the 2017 & 2019 Premier B section Grand Final teams and proudly represented the Big V this year. We wish Aidan all the best on reaching this major milestone and for the looming finals series.
Congratulations to Mitch Szabo from the Canterbury Football Club on achieving 100 games in the Red, Yellow and Black. Mitch first came down in 2015 from the Rowville Football Club at the age of 19! Originally, he came down to play his uncle Dennis and his cousin Nicholas ‘Buckets’ Szabo, but has become the lifeblood of the club ever since. Mitch was pivotal in the reserves premiership in 2015, winning best afield in the grand final after booting 5 goals. Since then he has cemented his spot in the senior side and has become an integral part of the backline for the last few seasons. As a club we are immensely proud of Mitch, his leadership around the club on and off field is ever so important and we can’t wait to see him tear it down in the finals series ahead! 100

Williamstown CYMS bank their most important win of the year
As we approach the final round of the 2023 season, we begin to reflect on what has been a fantastic year for the Under 19 Premier section. The sheer competitiveness and advanced skill level of this division is a promising sign for the VAFA in the years to come.
Williamstown dismantled an in-form Caulfield in arguably their most important match of the season. The CYs now sit in fifth and are praying for a finals berth in 2023. SBMT managed to keep their streak alive, compiling their seventh straight win in a solid performance against De La Salle. St Kevin’s outclassed the Xavs in a terrific outing. SKOB are indisputably the premiership favourites heading into the 18th and final hole of the 2023 season.
Old Brighton def. Old Scotch by 41 points.
A really proud showing from Brighton at home allowed them to secure their 7th win of the season. Unfortunately, they’ve tapered below their expectations for this season, but this win will instil some confidence heading into the offseason. Scotch remains out of finals contention and will be similarly disappointed how this season turned out. Early on they showed tremendous promise and potential and will be looking to regain those signs for 2024.
The young Brighton side simply clicked last Saturday morning. They moved the ball with confidence and at times looked far superior to a team sitting 8th on the ladder. They’re a talented outfit but will need to make some changes in the summer to bounce back in 2024. J. Campigli slotted 3 in a superb performance. He has been their most consistent contributor this season.
Scotch struggled to match Brighton’s pace and only accumulated 1.2 in the first half. They entered half time by a deficit of 48 points and were unable to recover. R. Beckworth, J. Harker, C. Ferguson, J. Gale, H. Byrne-Jones & A. Symons were the best afield for Old Scotch.
Old Brighton travel to Essendon to face St Bernards in their last match of the year. Old Scotch will host SKOB.
University Blues def. St Bernards by 78 points.
It was a tremendously high scoring game at Crawford Oval on Saturday. 152 – 74 read the final score as Uni comprehensively defeated the last-placed St Bernards. St Bernards hung with the superior Uni for much of the first half but were swept off their feet when the home side produced a 101-point second half.
University Blues will just miss finals in 2023 but have shown moments of magnificent talent. A. Dowsley’s monster season continued with a superb 10 goal haul. He has skyrocketed to the top of the league in goal kicking after SBMT’s J. Behnk was seemingly pulled from his U19 side to play seniors. Dowsley has been a pillar in all of Uni’s important victories this season. St Bernards faded away after a promising first half. Their scoring was impressive in this matchup, but their defensive capabilities need to be questioned heading into the offseason. J. Maddox was clearly their best afield with 5 important goals.
Uni will travel to Kew to face the Xavs. St Bernards will conclude a forgettable season against Old Brighton.
Old Xaverians def by. St Kevin’s by 27 points.
The SKOBs have made an absolute statement on the eve of finals; they are all in. They travelled to the Kew fortress in hopes of dethroning the 2022 premiers, and they did just that. The Xavs still sit comfortably in 3rd but may have some doubts enter their minds after this performance.
St Kevin’s led for the duration of the contest and played a game style which teams have been rarely able to match this season. Their ball movement and efficiency borders on elite and this contest illustrated that. W. Pfeiffer, O. Gill & J. Romanin combined for 8 spectacular majors.
The Xavs will face University Blues in R18. SKOB will head to Camberwell to face Old Scotch.
De La Salle def. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 18 points.
SBMT propelled their winning streak out to seven in a row on the weekend. A 3-goal win last Saturday has them essentially locked in for a finals berth in 2023. An impressive feat for a team who haven’t featured in U19 Premier for a number of years. De La won’t quite get there this year but have been competitive from start to finish this season.
It was a tightly contested game in parts. De La hung onto St. Bedes’ collar for the duration but just couldn’t pounce on the lead. J. Stewart, S. Cross, M. Miller, K. Rossiter, J. Torey-Toth & E. Macbeth were De La’s best in a tough loss.
St Bedes enter the finals possessing tremendous depth in their list and have illustrated that at points during the year. Their ball movement by foot was very impressive on a sparce ground like Waverly Oval. S. Buck kicked two and is a handy inclusion heading into the finals. He has spent much of the year with the Sandringham Dragons. J. Ryder was also impressive, showcasing his gut running and ball winning abilities.
SBMT will play Caulfield in R18. De La will travel to Williamstown. Caulfield Grammarians def by. Williamstown by 9 points.
A terrific match at Glen Huntly oval saw the CYs snatch away Caulfield’s dominant winning streak. A composed last quarter by Williamstown defence led the charge in securing the victory. Caulfield could only manage 2 points in the final term.
The second half of Caulfield’s season has been electrifying. Though dropping an important match like this on the eve of finals may come with dire consequences. The CGs struggled to convert up forward and may need to rethink some of their structures. J. Iverson, Z. Fraser, O. Sail, H. Short, O. Ruddock & C. Cooke were all commendable in a tight loss.
The CYs now sit in 5th and can smell the scent of finals. They’ll need results to go their way but have had a good season, nonetheless. This win speaks of their character and talent across every line. The consistent core of N. Sayers, A. Martinez, Z. Provest, T. Assafiri, C. Oldham & A. Fernandes were sublime in an amazing win.
Caulfield face an inform SBMT this weekend. The CYs go up against De La Salle.
