Welcome to the 2022 VAFA Season.
Brett Connell - VAFA CEO
Isn’t it great to be back and competing after our 2021 season was cut short in August last year? Of course, it is.
collaboration with the VAFAUA, which has seen an increase in numbers compared to the same time last year.
There is little doubt that the 2021 season was even more challenging than 2020 where no games took place, however what 2021 provided us with was the opportunity to apply our COVID Conditions of Play policy and COVID Financial policy to the season that took place.
On the back of a strong financial year, we are pleased to be able to invest in a number of areas of the organisation. We have beefed up our commercial and digital focus, invested strongly in Club Development through not only resourcing, but education workshops and volunteer support.
Needless to say, we enter 2022 with many positive learnings from the policies mentioned above and they both have been further developed, for example the Conditions of Play policy in relation to rules and regulations regarding promotion and relegation and finals’ eligibility to name a few. When we look to the AFL, we can see that they have remained agile in the face of the pandemic and while at community level we are not as resourced, we certainly take their lead and are focussed on playing as much football as we can in 2022. Since August 2021, we have seen a number of changes at Board and Administration level also.
We have also invested in umpire recruitment and retention strategies to not only support our clubs, but also the VAFAUA. We are developing a new Strategic Plan to set the direction for an important 3-5 years ahead and we will be upgrading the VAFA website, a project which has been placed on the backburner across 2020 and 2021 due to them being COVID affected years.
We enter 2022 with many positive learnings
As you can see, there is a strong resolve to engage, plan for the future and support all VAFA clubs as we rebound from two very challenging seasons.
We welcome new Board Members Alistair Ewart and Tim Habel, as well as the returning Board Member Anthony Amad following our recent 2021 AGM held on March 21. We farewell Board Members Nigel Credlin, Adam Kirkwood-Scott, Peta Olive, Megan Taberner and Terry McEvoy. The Board are currently working through a process of replacement.
To our Premium Partner William Buck and all of our partners and suppliers, thank you for your continued support, without your backing we would not be able to provide over 10,000 players, 500 umpires, 300-plus coaches, over 40,000 volunteers, 70 clubs and 300-plus teams an opportunity to get back on the field and do what they love this weekend.
At VAFA HQ, Matt Dervan, Nick Armistead and Lana Ryan all left to pursue other career opportunities. A new Commercial & Media team is in place led by Glen Towers (GM Commercial & Media), Cameron Voss (Media Manager – part-time) and Joe Pignataro (Broadcast & Digital Manager – part-time). Stephen Privitera joined us in January from FFV as our Umpire Operations Manager and has implemented a number of recruiting strategies, in
From the VAFA Board and Administration, thank you and well done to each and every player, umpire, coach and club volunteer for getting to the line this week, enjoy the football at whatever level of competition. See you at the footy.

By the time the ball is bounced on Saturday, we will have waded through 245 days, a fourth lengthy Victorian lockdown, another AFL Grand Final interstate and the second longest pre-season for all VAFA clubs in consecutive years.
There’ll be a lot of eyes on St Kevin’s to see if they can maintain a spot in the top 4 for a 5th Premier season in a row.
That being said, the buzz and excitement around VAFA football being back is palpable and our William Buck Premier clubs are itching to get out on the park and kick the footy in earnest.
Old Brighton 2021 Finish: 3rd | 8 wins, 3 losses | 117.47%
As always, the pre-season crystal ball gets run, and as per the official rules around using predictions, if they’re proven correct, they’ll be rehashed at a later date. If not, the pages of history are never released again.
There were sparks of brilliance from the Tonners in 2021, and moments where fans of the club had heads in their hands. Regardless, they’re a must-watch team under coach Greg Hutchison.
Let’s take a look at how the 2022 VAFA William Buck Premier season will, or won’t play out.
Harry Hill and Nick Pavlou continue to accumulate disposals at will. Hamish Dick, when he’s not playing VFL football is a speedster across the wing and cult-figure Anthony Zimmerman has a flair about him which excites many when he gets the ball around goal.
Old Xaverians 2021 Finish: 1st | 9 wins, 2 losses | 169.33% The men from Toorak Park were well on their way in 2021 finishing top of the table on a 6-game winning streak when the season was abandoned.
Will Lewis topped the shortened season goalkicking tally with 33 that included a bag of 9. When he’s on-song, he’s almost impossible to stop. Although opposition clubs might be hoping he takes up a regular spot in the VFL leaving opposition coaches with one less headache.
Marcus Stavrou (2021 Woodrow Medallist) has been reappointed as captain. Joined by Michael Batten (15 goals in 2021) and Cauley Beetham as vice-captains.
The core group has lost a few regular starters with Ben Jakobi, Josh Le Grice, Cal Wellings all going elsewhere but if it all comes together for them, they’re going to be hard to stop in 2022.
Tom Anderson is heading to the GVL while Jason Holmes is going home to America. Campbell Lane, Charlie MacIsaac and Joseph Ayton-Delaney are aligned with VFL clubs and given their talents expect to see them playing higher honours this year.
Caulfield 2021 Finish: 4th | 7 wins, 4 losses | 116.70%
In recruiting coups that the “Xav’s mafia” often find themselves part of, former Tiger and Blue Shaun Hampson will fill the ruck role left by Holmes, while Aaron Vandenberg has chosen Toorak Park to be his new home.
For 34 years they carried the monkey of being without a win in A-Grade, when the Fields broke that drought after 3 rounds last year, they went on a tearaway 7 game winning streak and sent a message to the rest of the competition that said in bold letters “we belong”
The #1 ranked side for scoring in 2021 will be looking to replicate their opening season defeat of St Bernard’s this year when they face off for the Gary McAllister Trophy.
After a season of the twin towers up forward which netted 49 goals between Brett Eddy and Julian Dobosz, the Tasmanian will play a lone hand up forward as Eddy moves to the Gippsland Footy League, the club has also farewelled club legends Tim Nixon and Will Osborn retiring at seasons end.
St Kevin’s 2021 Finish: 2nd | 9 wins, 2 losses | 147.01% The biggest shock of the off-season came when they announced the coaching change that sees club legend Anthony “Plugga” Lynch spinning the magnets for the Skobbas this season.
What the Fields proved last year under Simon Williams is that if you give them an inch, they’ll take a mile. A team full to the brim with confidence when Will Edwards is running through the centre, Lachie Stephens snooping around goal, Peterson and McClelland down in defence.
On-field they’ve had a whole off-season to think about how they finished the abandoned season with a 3-point loss to Old Brighton and will be aiming to get off to the best possible start when they face Old Melburnians on Saturday. There’s been dramatic change to the playing list since they last stepped onto the park with Nick Wood, Josh Wallis, Harry Lagastes, Ethan Phillips, Riley Bowman, Sam Barnett, Matt Arnott and Jarrad Waite all playing footy elsewhere in 2022.
There’s genuine winners on every line, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see them participate in this year’s finals series.
Oliver Hanrahan has nominated St Kevin’s as his club but is likely to spend regular time in the VFL with Werribee, as is Jarrad
Things didn’t go to plan at all for the “reigning premiers” leading into the 2021 season. While there was significant change last

year, they never seemed to get the game on their terms despite the strength of the playing group. One of the VAFA’s most successful coaches, Guy Martyn was snapped up by the Blues within days of parting ways with St Kevin’s and by all reports has already set about stamping his print on the game plan. The biggest blow is the loss of Marshall Rippon who leaves them with a significant hole to fill. The inclusion of Marty Gleeson (Essendon), Matt Crocker (SANFL), Will Carrington (Old Scotch) and Jeremy Goddard (Old Melburnians) will add defensive structure, experience and plenty of on-field voice. Knowing the passion that captain Ayce Cordy likes to invoke on his teammates, the expectation is they have a much more consistent season and get back to strong opening quarter starts. Don’t be surprised if they get back to kicking scores each week that would challenge their dominance of 2019.
Will Carrington is off to University Blues and faces off against his old side in the opening round, a handy welcome back to “the cave” is on offer for him! Former Hawk, James Cousins has joined the side this year. Scotch were ranked 10th for attack in 2021, one area they’ll have been keen to address during the off-season. Collegians 2021 Finish: 9th | 2 wins, 9 losses | 77.52% The Lions were on the back foot for much of last year, every week Jared Rivers faced another set of injuries, and changes to the line up. They did hold the favourite story of the year with “Big John Meesen” joining the club as the assistant coach, taking up a regular starting role as the first ruckman each week due to the lack of talls available.
Old Melburnians 2021 Finish: 6th | 5 wins, 6 losses | 107.46%
Despite the story of Meesen, he has hung up the boots this year. Along with Kalem Post, Tom Sheridan, Tom Penberthy, Zander Croft and Al Fahie. There’ll be wholesale change to the line up.
It’s going to be fascinating to watch how OM’s attack the opening month of the season. It’s arguably the toughest start to the season with St Kevins (2nd in 2021), Caulfield (4th) and Old Xavier (1st) in their opening 3 weeks.
This year they’ll be hoping for consistency in the side with Ed Greene joining the side. There’s an expectation there’ll be more games out of Kenny Ong, two youngsters on VFL lists in Ben Woodfull and Kobi George.
Last year it was all about Ed Nicholls who claimed the Mecwacare men’s rising star again, as well as the added speed of the Haysman boys on the wide expanses of Elsternwick Park.
The good news for trackwatchers is Sam Hibbins, Viv Michie and Josh Prudden are all fit and ready to go. And what will be a great story is the return of Ben Darrou in the latter part of the season after a debilitating back injury through 2021.
Coach Paul Satterly and his group of assistants have had the task of finding on-field replacements for Sean Hetherington (EDFL), Andrew Tashevski-Beckwith (EDFL) and Jeremy Goddard (Uni Blues) while Sam Dunnell, Tom Cameron and Nathan Drummond are all aligned with VFL clubs in 2021. As the members of the For the Love of the Game podcast have said over many years, if OM’s can win the games they’re expected to win, and pinch a couple of unexpected victories, it’ll go a long way to seeing them push for a spot in the top 4. St Bernard’s 2021 Finish: 7th | 5 wins, 6 losses | 98.34% Most people are expecting this report to have St Bernard’s going through the season undefeated. Those expectations are spot on! It’s going to be tough to see them losing a game all season. But to be measured for a moment, there’s the dawn of a new era at the snakepit in 2022. Mitch Hughes takes over from Simon Caven as captain, the club goes in with its youngest squad in over 15 years. A new-look coaching team under Paul Groves has been solidified over the off-season and there’s a bullishness from members of the St Bernard’s community. And what better way to test themselves than against the best with the 2021 ladder leaders Old Xaverians, into the 2019 premiers Uni Blues in round 2. Old Scotch 2021 Finish: 8th | 3 wins, 8 losses | 66.42%
Old Trinity 2021 Finish: 10th | 1 win, 10 losses | 58.01% It was a year of lean pickings for Old Trinity in 2021. A coaching change midway through the year saw Bernie Dineen part ways with the club. A new coaching staff has been put in place, led by Jamie CassidyMcNamara running the coaching program with Tim Broomhead assisting. The club sees significant on-field change with retirements of club legends Luke Pacconi, Gabe Hamilton and Ben Howell. Charlie & Hugh Beasley are likely to be regulars in the VFL, while Anthony Larkey is also likely to use that lethal long bomb at higher levels too. One on-field inclusion could see former GWS Giant and Demon, Dom Tyson play with the T’s after nominating them as his feeder club for 2022. A sight that will excite the true believers of the green and gold. PREDICTIONS Final 4: Old Xavier, Old Brighton, Caulfield Grammarians, University Blues Premiers: Old Xavier Woodrow Medal: Dave Mirra (Collegians)
ROUND 1 TIPS
Despite the abandoned season of 2021, it was a good taste-test for Mark Gnatt and Old Scotch as to what the expectations are, coming into the Premier grade. Players like Aidan Franetic, Andrew Jelbart flourish in the contest every week, and one expects another lengthy pre-season will see them go to another level.

Season Preview De La Salle
After 2 years of uncertainty, the 2022 season is finally upon us. A challenging year in 2021 has every team eagerly awaiting the return to community sport, optimistic for a successful year.
Ending the year 4th on the ladder, De La are determined to build on their achievements in 2021. Their powerful midfield is a cut above and will provide a challenge for every engine room across this league. After a solid preseason, De La are certainly one to watch this year.
A shortened season saw only 11 games played in 2021. The Uni Blacks finished on top of the ladder after only one loss. Beaumaris and Old Haileybury were hot on their heels, both wrapping up the seasons with 9 wins. After an unsuccessful year for the Parkdale Vultures, they enter Premier C for the upcoming season, creating a new challenge for teams as they prepare for a bye in Premier B.
St Bedes/Mentone The return of Steve D’Andrea to lead the Tigers in 2022 has the playing group hopeful for a positive year both on and off the field. With high rates of player retention, St Bedes/Mentone are looking to capitalise on the close games they had last year and convert them into wins. Entering the first round with a bye, the Tigers are patiently waiting to hit the ground running in round 2.
Uni Blacks After an outstanding 2021 season was cut short, The Uni Blacks return this year with unfinished business. The minor premiers are a force to be reckoned with as they look to translate the strong bonds they have created during preseason, into continued wins on the board - with the ultimate goal of a return to William Buck Premier.
Fitzroy Looking to build off the momentum they created at the end of 2021, the Roys are fighting fi t and pumped for the year ahead. Co-captains in Jack Hart and Julian Turner instil new club president David Leydon with confidence that 2022 will see them climb the ladder.
Beaumaris
Williamstown
After finishing the shortened year in the top 2, The Sharks will look to build on an extremely successful 2021. The catalyst will be their defensive ability as their fortress down back sets the tone for the rest of their team. Lead by experienced coach Guy McKenna, Beauy will be a strong side in 2022.
Williamstown CYMS are set to enter the 2022 season with a fresh-faced team. What this young side lacks in age, they make up for with speed and grit. With their new leader Con Terzoglou stepping up from coaching the Under 19s and Ron Rooney appointed as director of coaching, they are hopeful that this season will be a successful one.
Old Haileybury The hardworking bloods are entering the 2022 season with confidence and exhilaration. Motivated by their success in 2021, their eyes are set firmly on the prize. The re-appointment of coach Daniel Ward as well as the singing of Ex-Saint Jack Lonie has the club enthusiastic about the upcoming season.

Season Preview Monash Blues
Following the frustrations of the abandoned Covidaffected seasons of the last two years, Premier C watchers are optimistic about the possibilities of an uninterrupted year in 2022. Here’s how the combatants will be lining up for the season ahead.
The Mark Passador-coached Ashes took all before it in 2021, with their first season in Premier C culminating in ten wins from eleven starts. Their one reverse was also a most respectable effort, a three point defeat to Ormond which could easily have gone the other way. Monash come into the 2022 season determined to finish with the silverware that they feel their stellar season deserved last campaign.
Hampton Rovers The Rovers will be determined to honour past President and club legend Don Scarlett, who passed away recently, with a strong showing in 2022. The Christian Carnovaleled Rovers come into the season with impressive practice match form, culminating in a solid win over Parkdale Vultures in their final hit-out, and look well placed to improve upon their sixth-place position when play was called to a halt in 2021.
Old Geelong New coach Nathan Brown had an immediate effect on his charges in 2021, steering the club to the position where it loomed as the major contender to Monash’s crown. Like Monash, Old Geelong entered the division from Premier B in 2019, and they quickly found their feet to the point that they lost but twice in their eleven fixtures. It would surprise to see the blue and white not in contention in 2022.
Marcellin Marcellin were only able to sing the victor’s song four times from the seven matches played in 2021, but were very competitive in several other games during the aborted season. They hit 2022 knowing that their best can match many of the teams above them, and feel that they will be right in the mix for finals action. They welcome Dennet Merton, Anthony Pezzimenti and Jason Cox to their coaching panel and will be looking to them to provide the extra edge that they need to climb the ladder.
Old Ivanhoe Old Ivanhoe, as with Mazenod as mentioned before, fall into the category of consistent finals performers at this level, matching their 2019 fourth place with a similar finish in 2021. Seven wins from eleven starts indicate a level of consistency which Jarrod Gieschen will look to continue this year. A game that in which they would start favourite against Old Mentonians awaits them in round one, and they will look to make a statement in the early rounds coming into a blockbuster against Old Geelong in round four.
Mazenod The Nodders matched their fifth placed finish in 2019 with another fifth place when the 2021 season concluded, winning seven of their eleven matches. Coach Peter Banfield will be looking this season to move the black, white and blue from a position of solid citizens to a side that can match it with the best that Premier C has to offer. Their opening round clash with perennial powerhouse Ormond will give an early indication of their ability to do so.

Old Mentonians
Preston Bullants
Simon Cormie’s Panthers will be looking to quickly rebound from a difficult 2021 season, after knocking on the door of the finals two years previously. Old Mentonians only took the four points on four occasions last year, with some sizeable defeats suffered along the way. The Mentonians feel that they are further along the road to success than that, and are looking to make strides in 2022.
A 2021 season where little went to plan for the Bullants culminated in a winless campaign. Having won the division one grand final in 2019 they immediately found the step up in class difficult to come to terms with. Coach George Cotsonis and his assistants will have learned a lot, however, and one of the more interesting sub-plots of the season will be how the Reds improve from this position. UHS-VU
Ormond Ormond feel as though they have the list to match the two sides that finished above them in the 2021 ladder, and consider themselves placed squarely in the premiership window. They finished 2021 as the highest placed of the three sides with seven wins, including victory over Monash Blues; the only club to do so. A challenging start to the 2022 fixture awaits, which will give an early pointer to their chances.
The Uni boys were unsuccessful in the 2019 Grand Final against Preston, but had a little more success than their vanquishers in 2021, finishing with two wins for the season. Whilst finding the going difficult in their first Premier Division season, they were starting to find their feet towards the end of the shortened season, and will see their round one clash with the Bullants as a chance to make a statement that they are there to climb the ladder.
Parkdale Vultures The Vultures are the unknown quantity in Premier C, having come down from Premier B in 2021. They are in a rebuilding phase under coach Owen Lalor, and will be aiming to make sure their first season in Premier C for some years is among their last. The recent track record of sides dropping from B to C is strong, and a bye in round one will allow the Vultures brains trust to assess the form of their opponents before their own campaign commences.

OLD PARADE CELEBRATES 70 YEARS SINCE 1951 PREMIERSHIP Old Paradians Football Club celebrated their first Premiership, the 1951 “B” Grade flag, with their last 5 surviving team members - Ray Hangan, Maurie Considine, Denis Toner, Brian Turner and Brian Hill (who travelled from Canberra) at the RACV Club on Wednesday 9th March. The 70-year Premiership Anniversary was scheduled for September 2021 but was delayed due to covid. At that time, the club had 7 surviving members but have sadly lost 2 very special men; Geoff Kenny just before Christmas and Geoff Hill (Brian’s brother) more recently. Like most clubs post WWII, where almost 1,000 Paradians served their country, the club struggled and were relegated back to C Grade. After a few years of consolidation, the Club was promoted back to “B” Grade for the 1950 season, after losing the 1949 “C” Grand Final to North Alphington. In a strange historic twist, the club had to play Alphington twice to claim the Premiership. In the first decider, Paradians prevailed by a single goal (11-10-76 to 10-10-70). However, an old VAFA rule allowed the team that finished on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season (Alphington finished 1st and OP’s finished 3rd) the “Right of Challenge” if they lost the Grand Final. This allowed Alphington to request to play again the following week in the Grand Final, which they did. Old Paradians triumphed again (16-11-107 to 3-4-22), to put a huge exclamation mark on the season. Alphington didn’t challenge again. The day was a wonderful celebration for the surviving members of the Team and for the Club as a whole, and the club would like to thank the VAFA for access to their archives, and to George Voyage and Frank Dunell for attending, and to Chris Bibby for pulling it all together.

STAFFORD MOVING UP THE RANKS IN THE VFLW SPACE Inaugural William Buck Premier Women’s premiership coach Tom Stafford was unveiled as the Blues new VFLW coach ahead of the 2022 season. After winning a flag with Marcellin and being awarded the VAFA Women’s Coach of the Year in 2017, Stafford went on to coach the VAFA Women’s Big V representative team in 2019, before being named Carlton coach in November last year. One of the 11 VAFA players presented with their jumpers by Stafford was Vanessa Murphy, who has featured prominently already through this VFLW season. She is the daughter of De La Salle’s Shane Murphy, who played representative footy in the 1980’s. The father-daughter combination of Shane and Vanessa Murphy is a powerful one in VAFA circles, with both having captained their respective Big V representative teams. Carlton’s VFLW assistant coach, Josh Melican, is a current VAFA coach, in charge of West Brunswick in the William Buck Premier Women’s Section. Carlton are currently 9th with 2 wins and 4 losses after 6 rounds of the VFLW season. Across the VFLW, there is almost 100 VAFA listed players on club lists, plus a further 30 players on club development lists. 11 of the 12 VFLW clubs feature VAFA talent, with Carlton, Port Melbourne, Southern Saints and Williamstown each with 10 or more VAFA players on their lists.

FITZROY FAREWELL JOAN EDDY It’s the end of an era at Brunswick Street Oval, with long-time Fitzroy president Joan Eddy standing down from her role in the top job, leaving a lasting legacy at the famous club. Joan has not only been instrumental in the rise of the Fitzroy Football Club since its merger with the Fitzroy Reds in 2008, but also with the rise of women’s football and a front runner for women in footy leadership. Joan told the Northcote Leader her two crowning glories have been the introduction of women’s football, not only at the club but across suburban football, and the club’s first senior men’s premiership since 1944 in 2018. “There’s two on-field successes that are hard to separate, one is the establishment of women’s football and the other is the 2018 senior men’s premiership in Prem C,” Eddy said.
NIGHT FOOTBALL ON THE CARDS FOR EMMAUS ST LEO’S A win bigger than just the four points has happened at Emmaus St Leos Football Club recently, with a $100,000 upgrade of lighting at Bennettswood Reserve announced. Season Preview Kew
I know what you’re thinking… It can’t be. The VAFA? Back? Surely not. Well, it’s time to wipe the dust from your eyes and the mud from your boots, because VAFA 2022 is back in a big way, and in a year ending without an ending in 2021, there are plenty of stories to be rewritten.
Now, this team gives me a tingle. At their best, they are absolutely dominant and can run the absolute legs off their competition, but the issue here is the consistency to do so. The only team to get the better of Whitefriars last year proved their best is good enough, but the range of performance with a loss to Oakleigh in round 5 just shows that consistency is the key to their success in 2022. At their best I’m not afraid to call the team elite, but what they need this year is that final piece of consistency, and with that in their four walls they can absolutely contend. It’s interesting, because they could either take all the chocolates or slide down to the mid back, so watch this team with interest.
With some great results in 2021 you would think it’s a road to redemption and glory for some of our high finishers, but that may not be the case - with half a year to rebuild and regather the 2022 season couldn’t come with more promise and excitement… Let me show you why. Old Camberwell Grammarians The Coupe De Gras of the competition in my books - it’s a huge call but not a bold one. With the reigning LS Pepper medal winner leading the boys around in 2022, the Grammarians engine room will only be running hotter with the likes of Jimmy Allen in the mids and the duo of Verbi / Hart with more snags than Bunnings on a Sunday, it’s going to be a tough ask to break down this system that clearly worked in 2021, only suffering a loss to Kew in the mid-season of 2021. If you were asking for favourites for the season, this would be it… but only just
Prahran Assumption This team can start very hot this year, mark my words. 2nd in the B&F for Matthew Clifford means the fire is in the belly, and with a round one match up of the rising Glen Eira from Division 2, we’ll get an idea of the legitimacy of Prahran off the gun. A 7-4 record for 2021 is certainly nothing to sneeze at, but it also doesn’t scream a team that probably had it all together through the year. It should be uninterrupted this year, and the key to the success of Prahran will be scoring, they were a team who didn’t put up huge numbers offensively last year and to move up that ladder and compete, they’re going to need a scoring option, so let’s hope they’ve recruited well for this year.
Whitefriars With more men inside the top 10 of the B&F than I’ve had hot dinners, it was no surprise to see this juggernaut second on the table in 2021. What Whitefriars do incredibly well and consistently is score big. With the most points for in 2021 the run and carry of the team means they have goal kickers spread across the ground, and although they saw 24 majors kicked by forward Daniel Wood, they can just about get a score any way they want, and we can expect more of it in 2022. A lot like Camberwell, they’re class in this competition, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them hoist the trophy at the end of the year.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
St Mary’s Salesian So okay, this team interests me a lot. With a 5-6 record for 2021 they are right in that midpack and as a footy fan, the midpack should excite you. Now St Mary’s had nobody in the top 10 for the B&F in 2021 and they also didn’t have a stand out goal kicker, so to win 5-6 without any obvious stars or carrying members of the team should show this is a group that works well together with what they have. If, and only if in this off season they’ve managed to develop or recruit a star, and that can be anywhere on the ground, I could see the team rising up and contending alongside Prahran Assumption, but keep an eye out early to see if the wins chalk up because without a hot start they could slide. 12
Therry Penola
Oakleigh
In 2021 Therry Penola was another mid range team, also finishing with a record of 5-6 it shows this is a team that can beat you if you aren’t careful. Teams like this are such a good measuring stick for the teams around them, and being that way can make you dangerous to play. Led by Matty Lyons who claimed =9th in the B&F last year lockdown defence could help their case to rise up the ladder, being a team who let through quite a few major scores last year, they improve this and they improve their position.
Oakleigh is the home of the reigning leading goal kicker for Division 1, with Aaron Cloke booting home 35 majors to be that leading goal scorer. If you look at this statistically, Oakleigh needs big body defenders, as simple as that. They’re a team that can hit the scoreboard and make you hurt, but they also allowed the most points in the league last year. Much as the same as some of the lower-end teams of this competition, if they’ve found a way to bolster their defensive stocks and get some carry out of the defensive 50 we could see something different. I think this is a team that remains near the bottom of Division 1, but I have certainly been wrong before
PEGS FC If you change some letters around in PEGS FC it actually also spells DANGEROUS, and that is what they are in 2022. The most telling stat I can give you to indicate this is they scored more last year than our fourth place Prahran Assumption, and finished with a higher percentage… just didn’t have the wins. If this team can figure out a way to win and win consistently, I honestly see them being the biggest movers heading into 2022 Old Peninsula Old Peninsula are certainly ones to watch, but possibly not for the best reasons. This is a team who went 3-8 last year, and possibly one of the big reasons for that was a lack of offensive weapons. They put up the second lowest amount of points across the year, and in 2022 they may be a team that could be under threat of remaining toward the tail end of the ladder. They certainly have potential to climb if they have resolved their forward issue, however, it could be a long season ahead for the boys from Peninsula without having fixed that Issue. They do come up against PEGS in round 1, and that is a winnable game at their best, but it will be interesting to see what’s happened during the off-season for this 2022 year.
Glen Eira The up and comers. Glen Eira rises from the ranks of Division 2 in replacement of Brunswick to contend amongst these other Division 1 powerhouses. Glen Eira did not drop a game in Division 2 last year, and with 32 majors coming off the boot of Callum Dreth you can expect to see some big scores from this team across the year. Being baptized in the fire a little bit with the danger side of PEGS to begin their 2022 campaign, they couldn’t get a better barometer to see just where they stack up coming up a rank. It’s also worth noting, this club has depth. Glen Eira put 3 men inside the top 6 for the Division 2 B&F, so expect class across the ground for the Magpies in Division 1, could they make a run? I can’t wait to find out.

Season Preview Division 2 had plenty on the line going into the back half of 2021 before the season was abandoned but after an offseason of deliberating, thinking about missed opportunities and waiting around, the moment for redemption has arrived for all of our clubs.
The Paradians have farewelled coach Phil Plunkett at the conclusion of last year and brought in Justin Whitcher. Justin’s resume has experience left, right and centre having spent time at reserves level with both Collingwood and Carlton, before spending 3 years with South Fremantle.
Johnny Edgar’s Glen Eira have made the jump up to Division 1 after winning 11 of 11 last season, while Tommy Hunter’s Brunswick come down after finishing the season winless.
Ivanhoe AFC The Hoers come into the season full of steam, they were seriously pushing for a top 4 berth when the abandonment came in 2021.
MHSOB The highest scoring team in 2021 will be out to continue the 10 game winning streak they’re on when it all kicks off this weekend. Last year they averaged 118.7 points per game kicking over 100 points on 5 occasions and over 200 once. From a defensive point of view, they were equally as tight only giving up 46.9 points.
Playing coach Ash Close took it up to Ashan in the goalkicking stakes with 38 majors while in his debut season, at the ripe age of 39 Wayne Schultz claimed the competition best and fairest award. Not to be outshone by the Premier grade clubs, Scott Selwood was scouted and is coming out of football retirement to play with Ivanhoe AFC this year and it all kicks off with a ding dong battle against Old Paradians on Saturday night.
Ashan Wijayakumara bagged 42 goals for the season to go with his 30 the year before, he will be one tough to stop if the Unicorns get the ball in quick out of centre square stoppages.
Manningham
A big off-season recruit for the club is Julian Eimutis who returns home after a lengthy stint with Collegians, he’ll be joined by fellow class of 2013 member Jayme Lawson to help bolster the stocks at the club. West Brunswick
It was the Cobras first year in Division 2 throughout 2021 after going down to Aquinas in the 2019 D3 Grand Final, unfortunately, due to COVID lockdowns and season cancellations we’ll have to wait until round 5 to see the Grand Final rematch between these 2 sides.
In 2021 defence seemed to be the mantra for the Pies as they conceded an average of 54pts per game. While on the attacking side (Rank 3) they would average 28 scoring shots per game, 4 times kicking over 100 points.
The club will be looking to fill the hole left by Kane Maghamez who kicks goals for fun. Anthony Raso will be one to watch this season as the Cobras push for a spot in the top 4.
VAFA legend Nick Mitchell has stepped out of the coaches box and Louis Martin has been welcomed into Ransford Oval.
On the leadership front Nick Zappala returns to the club after a stint with Old Trinity in 2021 and joins the leadership group. Chris Arman, club legend is the vice-captain after being the reserves skipper in 2021 is also an added member along with Mitch Keltie, Adam Baltruweit and Tom Flood all in support of Luke Morris who is one of the competitions most consistent performers.
It all kicks off for West Brunswick in the twilight spot of 3.20pm on Saturday against Aquinas away from home, a side they managed to get the better of in 2021. Old Parade
Aquinas
Is this the year Old Parade forgive the VAFA’s For the Love of the Game podcast? We sure hope so.
It was a strong finish to the home and away run for Aquinas in 2021 winning 3 of the 4 final games they played. The season opens at 3.20pm against West Brunswick at Aquinas College.
2021 saw Parade finish with an 8-3 record, they’ll be aiming to build on that this season. An off-field recruiting drive has seen them release a “fee-free” footy season for registered players, while a commemoration of the 1951 B-Grade premiership has got the club right in the mood for a big tilt at the title this year! THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
They’ll be expecting a hot start to their season with 5 of their first 6 matches all at home and will fancy their chances against the teams that finished around them in 2021. 14
The club has reappointed Jarrod Fisher to the role of senior coach after his debut season and Fisher said at the time of his reappointment “My expectation for all three of the men’s teams – 19s, reserves and seniors – as a minimum would be for finals football,” he said ahead of 2022. He will be joined by good friend Luke Harley, who joins the club as a playing assistant coach. Yarra Old Grammarians Despite lean pickings in terms of on-field success in 2021, it’s been an off-season of stability for Yarra Old Grammarians. Ahead of the pre-season even beginning the club had already announced a number of re-signings and commitments for 2022, including Michael Scott returning. “Scotty” is a forward who oozes X-factor, capable of kicking big bags and can play as an intercepting defender when required. They will be led ably by Rory Chipman, Jack Hall, Dean Letson and Liam Marshall as the on-field leaders for the Men’s side for season 2022. Power House Power House will recognise 75 years of existence in 2022 and they’ll do so with arguably the greatest clash strip in the competition. Senior coach Anthony McMahon spoke to VAFA.com.au at the end of the 2021 season, with an eye to 2022 “We feel we have placed some excellent building blocks to ensure we improve on the win/loss columns next year” and there’s no question that vibe and feeling has only grown over recent months. Matt Quinn joins the club from Bonbeach FC. Following in his father’s footsteps who played at the club back in 1979. Will the club give him the same number to run out this Saturday? All will be revealed when they face Bulleen Templestowe in what promises to be a close one to start the year.
Bulleen Templestowe It’s been a lean couple of years for Bulleen Templestowe, but they haven’t stopped trying or thrown in the towel at any point. Over the off-season a number of players have re-signed and re-committed to the club in a great show of faith. They were pleased to announce and welcome Max Tiernan who comes across from Fitzroy, expect to see him playing a Luke Jackson type role in the ruck for the Ants this year. They finished off 2021 with a win over Yarra Old which no doubt would’ve whet the appetite going into the pre-season and will fancy their chances this Saturday against Power House at Ted Ajani Reserve. PREDICTIONS Top 4: MHSOB, Old Parade, Brunswick, West Brunswick Premier: Old Parade Player to watch: Wayne Schultz (Ivanhoe AFC) Stories to follow: • Can Ashen do a Buddy Franklin and kick 100 this season? • Who does Scott Selwood tag in Round 1? • When does that first win come for Brunswick? • Can Bulleen make it 2 wins in a row? • Will Old Parade forgive the For the Love of the Game podcast? Season Preview Parkside
After a no-footy year in 2020 and an interrupted season in 2021, there is unfinished business in the new-look Division 3 Men’s in 2022. Nine teams will battle it out for premiership points, with two additional sides promoted from Division 4 as Albert Park waved goodbye after a season. Elsternwick and South Melbourne Districts are making the jump together, and Division 3 fans are in for a treat if the rivalry continues.
It’s all good news for Parkside on the coaching front as 2021 coach of the year Rob Wise returns but he’ll have to wait a week to get to business, with the Red Devils getting round one off due to a bye. It’s a rather anticlimatic start to the season for Parkside, who finished last year off strongly to be second on the ladder by percentage only.
Last season was a tale of two halves for the division, with the top four separated from the bottom four by four wins.
Richmond Central Richmond Central will be looking to go better than their eight wins and three losses of the 2021 season. Finishing the year in fourth by percentage only, their last game puts them in good stead for the coming year after beating the 2021 minor premiers by nine points. For their first game of the season, the Snakes will travel to Allard Park to face North Brunswick, who are already seeing red and looking to get their season off to a good start.
Emmaus St Leo’s Emmaus St Leo’s will open their 2022 campaign at home at Bennettswood Reserve for the first three games of the season. It’s a case of what if for the Animals after they seemingly hit their straps late in the 2021 season to make a genuine attempt at finals and would have, if not for the unfortunate cancellation of VAFA footy. With a strong pre-season under their belts and some game plan finessing that’ll have Animals fans excited, Emmaus St Leo’s will welcome Canterbury at home to kickstart their year.
Canterbury Finishing the 2021 season in sixth wasn’t exactly where Canterbury wanted to be, but will be invigorated by the appointment of a new head coach. Highly-experienced assistant coach Nathan Walsh has taken over the senior coaching reins for the Cobras this year, but will do it with a twist as he dons the guernsey and takes the field with his charges as playing coach.
Hawthorn After a chaotic beginning to their 2021 season, Hawthorn is well poised to start this year off better than the last with Mark Murray returning as senior coach, while last year’s club best and fairest Hugh Clancey has been elevated to a playing assistant coach. The Hawks will be the first team to get a look at divisionalnewcomers South Melbourne Districts, who will travel to Rathmines Road Reserve to try and get a scalp early in the season.

North Brunswick
Elsternwick
It wasn’t to be in 2021 for North Brunswick, but the re-appointment of coaching group Scott Rymer and Sam Willatt will have Bulls fans excited for the future. Finishing just outside the top four with a win/loss ratio of 4-7 will have the fire burning for a more competitive season. The Bulls will get to show off some new recruits at home for the first round of the season as they welcome Richmond Central to Allard Park.
It’s new beginnings for Elsternwick this year as they make the jump from Division 4 to Division 3, after finishing 2021 as minor premiers. Division 4’s coach of the year Peter Higginbotham will return as senior coach, while the Wickers will open their season with a home game at Holmes Todd Oval, against the Westbourne Grammarians, who will be hoping to get one on the board early.
Westbourne Grammarians The only way is up for the Westbourne Grammarians after finishing the 2021 season with just three wins from eleven games on the board. Club stalwart Justin Johns returns to the coaching throne, already having a few games to his name as senior coach after having coached the team in the 2018 and 2019. The Warriors have seemingly recruited some hefty numbers and they get to show them off with an away game against divisionalnewcomers Elsternwick.

Paddy O’Callaghan will return as senior coach, while Jack Eastman (development coach) and Scott Moran (playing assistant) round out the coaching group. It’s likely to be a tough introduction to Division 3 for the Bloods, who will travel to Rathmines Road Reserve to take on 2021’s ladder-leaders Hawthorn in round one.

Season Preview Box Hill North
After a pandemic affected 2021 season, the VAFA is back and the teams in Division 4 are ready to get back into it as they all chase the end of season premiership.
Box Hill North is a side that struggled in the 2021 season only managing two wins in close games against Eley Park and Swinburne. Their round 1 fi xture sees them take on the Sharks at home which will give them great confidence as they enter an important season for the club. With a fairly tough run of games following their opening game, it is crucial that the Demons kick off their season strong. Peter Cassidy-Marsh, David Edwards and Thomas Cheslett are going to be crucial pieces to Box Hill’s 2022 season and will need to start the season strong to get the Demons rolling in 2022.
VAFA Divison 4 Men’s is one of the most interesting and unpredictable divisions in the competition and clubs and spectators are in for a great season of football. After a stop-start 2021 season, the upcoming season will look slightly different to the previous year. After dominating in 2021, Elsternwick and South Melbourne will both move up to Division 3 after both teams amassed records of (10-1). Albert Park will join Division 4 in 2022 after a winless 2021 season in Division 3, but they are a team that cannot be counted out.
Eley Park Albert Park
Eley Park is a team that’ll come into their season wanting to get off to the best start possible. Eley Park had a tough run home losing 4 of their last 6 games and ending up in 5th on the ladder. However, with Elsternwick and South Melbourne in division 3, finals are a real chance for the Sharks in 2022. Eley Park welcome back Chris Allen, Jack Craig, Ben Field and Jesiah McGarvie who are all keen on finals football. After strengthening the club culture during the pre-season the time is now for the Sharks to make a run at the premiership.
Albert Park will potentially be the hungriest team coming into the 2022 season after a winless season in 2021. The Falcons however are set to welcome back former club captain and best and fairest winner Jack Amies in addition to new signings Nick Armistead and Gary Brown. Although the losses of Justin Mahoney and Ben May could hurt, the club still has key players Tyson Cattle, James Allen, Alistair Lupo and Sam Lee who are determined to take the Falcons to their first flag under the leadership of first-year coach Jackson Maloney.
La Trobe University La Trobe had a season in 2021 that was filled with mixed results. The team started off their season with four wins in a row but then lost their final three. La Trobe will open up their season against Masala, a side they defeated last year. Will Lowry, Patrick Lindsay and Tom Whelan all return in what is an exciting year for the club and a season in which a premiership is definitely in the picture.

Masala
Swinburne University
One of the VAFA’s most exciting sporting clubs will enter the season with many list changes due to retirements at the club. However, Masala has brought in some great talent over the offseason including Jake Dunkley, Deakin Harris and Jordan Gibbon in addition to retaining dual team of the year members Matthew Decarne and Declan Fowler who are both hungry to take Masala to their first finals series in club history. The Tigers will welcome La Trobe to the jungle in round 1 and will be looking to start their 2022 campaign off strong.
The Razorbacks are a team that has a lot to prove in 2022. Swinburne had a difficult season in 2021 only managing 2 wins from 11 matches with their wins coming against Masala and St John’s. The Razorbacks will kick their season off with three winnable games against Albert Park and the previously mentioned Masala and St John’s. Winning these games is crucial for the club and will set them up for the rest of the season. Mitch Walker was the clubs leading goal scorer in 2021 with 16 goals and will be looked upon to add more to his tally as the Razorbacks seek a premiership in 2022.
St John’s St John’s is a side coming into the 2022 season that could arguably be considered to be the favourites to win the premiership. In 2021, St John’s finished with a record of 6-5 (four of those losses against the promoted Elsternwick and South Melbourne) so will be entering the season with a lot of confidence. The JOC’s will have Rohan Scott, Corey Ely and Nick Terrill who will be trying to win St John’s their first flag. Following their bye in round 1, St John’s will travel to Eley Park, a side that they defeated in 2021.

MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Ernie Fan (La Trobe University)
100
Congratulations to La Trobe’s Ernie Fan on reaching 100 games. Ernie first joined the Trobers in 2012 playing in the Under 19’s. He played the following season in the reserves before making his senior debut in 2014. Ernie played both seniors and reserves until becoming a regular senior player in 2019. This long-awaited milestone was delayed in 2020 and again last season after just 2 games due to injury but today Ernie plays his 100th in the red & black! “The Human Cannonball”, with his fearless attack on the ball at pace, is only surpassed by his attack on the man with the ball – making many opposition forwards very nervous over almost 10 seasons! His dedication and fitness place him in an elite group of current players, while off-field he has used his physio skills to assist both players and trainers. A great clubman and a dedicated player - a true asset to our club. Well done Ernie on joining a select group of ‘Trobers!
Will Hewson (Old Scotch)
100
Congratulations to Will Hewson on reaching 100 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Will joined the club from Scotch College in 2012, spending his first two years in the under 19s, before moving into the senior ranks in 2014 where he has played at 2nd and 3rd XVIII level. Will was an integral part of the Premier ‘B’ 3rd XVIII premiership team in 2017. Will is doing a great job as captain of the 3rd XVIII team, looking to get another flag in 2021. We wish Will all the best on reaching this milestone and many more games for the Cardinals.
Mitch Bradley (Old Scotch)
150
Congratulations to Mitch Bradley on reaching 150 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Mitch joined the club from Scotch College in 2010, spending his first two years in the under 19s, before moving into the senior ranks in 2012. Mitch has played many years at 2nd and 3rd XVIII level and is a great clubman. Mitch was an integral part of the Premier ‘B’ 3rd XVIII premiership team in 2017. We wish Mitch all the best on reaching this milestone and many more games for the Cardinals.

Season Preview Caulfield Grammarians
The 2022 William Buck Premier Women’s season is finally here and as we head into the opening round, let’s look at a preview for each of the nine teams.
Irena Malliaras was the #1 player in the William Buck Premier competition in 2021, comfortably taking out the competition’s best and fairest after an outstanding season. Clubs will have to be at their very best to stop her tenacity at the football.
Marcellin It’s clear what could have been for Marcellin in season 2021, a 10-0 home and away record and a victory in the first week of finals is nothing short of extraordinary.
The Fields found themselves (like the men’s side) right at home in the Premier grade finishing the season at 7-3 after spending 2019 in Premier B. Reaching the Preliminary Final weekend before the season was abandoned.
They have an extra week to get themselves primed for another tilt at this year’s campaign and will be eager to fire when they step out in Round 2 vs. St Kevins. Coach Luke Boyd had plenty of firepower at his disposal in 2021, highlighted by competition leading goal kicker Cecilia Balsassarre (23 goals) and Shaylee Taylor (10 goals). While the second best defensive unit in the competition were near impenetrable.
It’s all before them this weekend when they face St Mary’s, a side they managed to keep scoreless when they met last season. West Brunswick West Brunswick fought hard to make it to the finals last year, finishing the season with 5 wins and 5 losses. They sat in a position where they were able to beat the teams on the lower end of the ladder but struggled against those above them.
The main group at Marcellin have remained and it’s hard to see their winning ways coming to an end anytime soon. St Kevin’s St Kevin’s were basically on a par with Marcellin in 2021, they were the only hurdle they couldn’t leap over through last season.
This season will be all about developing that momentum further and looking to get some wins against the stronger teams in the competition.
Can they go one step further this year after a 9-1 record in 2021? We’re expecting more of the same from the #1 ranked defensive side.
The season opener for West Brunswick will be against last years second place St Kevin’s, a win this weekend would be a huge momentum boost for the team.
They’ve had the off-season to lick their wounds after the finals loss to Marcellin and will be sweating on every loose ball against West Brunswick this Saturday to kick off their campaign on the best possible foot.
St Mary’s Salesian St Mary’s Salesian who underwent a rebuild over the last season, and as a result ended with just one win for the year. Mitch Duplajnin will be the senior coach for season 2022 and brings with him a wealth of experience and success to the club. Duplajnin has won a premiership in 2019 when coaching Caulfield Grammarians and also took out coach of the year in the same season. The playing group now having a year to develop together will have a new coach to bring a new playstyle, which should help see them rise up the ladder once again in season 2022.

On-field success follows the Mugars wherever they go and have been one of the dominant women’s sides in the VAFA since the inception of the competition. Last season in Premier B they were well on their way to another Premiership after advancing to the Grand Final before the season was abandoned.
It was a rather forgettable season for Old Trinity in 2021, finishing with just 2 wins and landing in second last spot on the ladder. With the club itself going through many changes in the off season, the securing of new head coach Luke Lobello only came last week. This means the club has undergone their pre season with the absence of a head coach
Eve Sheehan put her name in lights as the 2021 Anytime Fitness Rising Star while Asha Price was the sharpshooter up forward.
Trinity will kick off the season against Kew this Saturday and will be looking to their big names to help them get a win to start the year.
The team is stacked with winners on every line and they’re led boldly by 2 of the best coaches in the league Erini Gianakopoulos and Martha Cantwell
Kew
Old Xaverians
Kew started last season with a bang but struggled for the rest of the year and finished the year in 5th position.
Coming off a mixed season last year, Old Xavierians missed out on finals in 2021 but had very strong seasons from players Sarah Anderson and Gabby Henderson that saw them both named in the Premier team of the year.
Kew have added former player Jess Burger as their new head coach in the offseason, Burger who has been a part of the club since its inception will be looking to bring her playing experience to the coaching box.
They’ve been forced to find themselves a new coach after Scott Gowans was successful in obtaining the role with the Sydney Swans AFLW coach for the next season later this season, and from us all at the VAFA we wish Scott all the best in his endeavours.
Kew have built on their list from last season and have added some new faces to the team, which has seen them get some wins in practice matches over the Pre season. It looks to be an exciting season added for Kew who will face off against Trinity this Saturday.
One thing we know about Old Xaverians, no matter whether it’s senior men’s, reserves, thirds, under 19’s or women’s. You can’t keep them down for too long, there’s an aura around the red and black, so expect more of the same from the senior women’s team in 2022.
