SEASON 2023 - April 15
After what seems like an extended off-season, the anticipation amongst the VAFA Community for the commencement of the 2023 VAFA season this weekend is at fever pitch!
At VAFA headquarters, we have been working extremely hard for our Clubs and players in laying the foundations for a great season ahead.
We have learnt from the lessons of our 2022 experiences and made necessary adjustments.
Elsternwick Park has undergone a $170k ten-stage maintenance program by Bayside City Council to address the surface issues, so we will now have a venue that all the VAFA community can again be rightly proud of in showcasing our key matches.
We have brought the player points process in house, so once Clubs submit their player background details to the VAFA, we can determine in advance the appropriate points for each player and leave no risk of Club’s making errors.
We have been proactive in providing Club and VAFA feedback to AFL in determining their new Vilification and Discrimination policy, which has also resulted in the AFL providing an independent conciliator when required to assist with the timing of addressing these matters.
Over the off-season we have also been busy engaging with our Clubs in producing and finalising a number of key building blocks for the season ahead, namely a new Constitution; a new four-year Strategic Plan; Updates to VAFA Rules; and a new Affiliation Fee model.
We are thrilled to have renewed our Premium Partner William Buck for a further three years that will result in a 10 year term as a VAFA partner. We also welcomed numerous new corporate partners to the VAFA Community, led by McMahon Hire Solutions, Grill’d, Comwire IT, Sports Lawyer, Skins, Opro, and Carruthers Executive.
We have also secured:
Jason ReddickCEO
- a new three year Apparel deal for Clubs to have their choice of four quality suppliers: New Balance, Puma, StarSub and CGR, bringing both choice and competitive pricing.
- a two year deal with the Perth Football League that sees the return of our elite men’s and women’s players wearing our Big V with pride in representative football.
- an umpiring partnership with Yarra Junior Football League to promote pathways and opportunities for umpiring across both associations.
- a two year partnership with the Centre of Multicultural Sport and Proud to Play to deliver an ‘Inclusive’ education program to the VAFA and our Clubs.
- a new Life Members Association structure to facilitate the connection, experience and knowledge of our most dedicated servants through to the VAFA.
- a new Club in Coburg FC who will run senior and reserve women’s teams in our Premier Division.
- a pilot concussion program partnership with Monash Medical Centre and AFL that will provide a match day expert resource phone service to assist our Club’s medical staff with addressing concussion incidents.
Recently we announced a new three year deal with News Corp Australia to extend their live streaming service of VAFA matches on KommunityTV to now include a Premier Men’s or Premier Women’s Match of the Day for seniors and reserves every week. This will provide great exposure for our VAFA brand and Clubs and their corporate partners.
Since commencing in the CEO role last June, I have constantly stated that we are on this journey together. The VAFA Board and management look forward to continuing to work with our Clubs and stakeholders in reaching our shared goal: Growing all aspects of the VAFA to enable a competition that our community can continue to be passionate and proud of.
Now let’s enjoy the on-field action!

We have learnt from the lessons of our 2022 experiences and made necessary adjustments.
Joe Pignataro
The time for talking is over. Step up and walk the walk in 2023
I’ve got my scarf, got my old coat, I’ve got a footy game to go to.
I’m sure I’ve heard those words muttered, said, and sung many times over the years.
As Saturday fast approaches it’s great to have VAFA footy back in 2023.
It’s now time for the teams in the top flight to stop the talk, and start the walk. I’m looking forward to seeing what the 131st year of the competition puts up for us all to assess, analyse and discuss.
This pre-season has brought much change to William Buck Premier, will 2023 see a new Premier crowned or will the golden era of St Kevin’s continue?
Either way, all 10 clubs enter this opening weekend with plenty of hope.
ST KEVIN’S
Four Grand Finals in a row, three premierships. SKOB are a genuine force and this run is one of the all time greats. A playing group that is 95% from the College. Home-grown talent led by a club-champion has been a key pillar of sustained success for the boys of T H King.
The addition of Mitch Wallis, and the return of brother Josh Wallis to the line-up make this team even more irresistible.
The reigning premiers went through 2022 as the #1 side for attack (85.1 points per game), and #1 for defence (a measly 51.1 points conceded). The 18-man press was in full swing on Grand Final day, as they kept Old Brighton to three goals for the afternoon.
On the road in round 1, they’ll face the Premier B premiers Old Haileybury to open their campaign. More of the same for St Kevin’s in 2023, and will look to start this year the way they’ve started every season since 2017 - An opening round victory.
OLD BRIGHTON
Significant off-field change at the 2022 runners up. Xavs legend, Dan Donati is the new coach of the Tonners. The master coach of local footy has found his way to Brighton Beach Oval.
Number one in so many areas through 2022, can they keep their grunt, and composure in check throughout this year as they look to climb the mountain and go one step further this year?
No Anthony Zimmerman to excite us this year. While Darby Hipwell, Felix Flockhart, Max Kennedy are a few players we’ll expect to see playing in the VFL as the year unfolds.
The return of a fully-fit Lochie Filipovic is a sight for sore eyes at BBO. On his day, he is close to the #1 ruckman in William Buck Premier. Supported at his feet is the #1 midfielder in the competition, Harry Hill. Last year’s dual Woodrow Medallist.
What will Donati do with Will Lewis ? He finished the abandoned 2021 season atop the goalkicking list with 33, the Tonners found more strings to the Lewis bow during the finals run of 2022 he was playing at fullback.
The first challenge that awaits the Tonners are the boys from Uni Blacks, who have spent the summer smarting over what might have been in the Premier B Grand Final.
COLLEGIANS
Collegians, the Collingwood of the VAFA in 2022. At the end of the abandoned 2021 season, they were languishing in ninth spot. At the beginning of round nine last year, they were seventh.
From 19 games, they’d won five. And, it all changed. 10 wins in a row, one after the other. They became the “fun team” to watch, the competition’s entertainers under Jared Rivers. The club took us on a journey that all associated with the purple army hopes to continue this year.
Alex Lukic (former Old Scotch) has aligned himself with the Lions, when he’s not playing VFL he’ll make the attack look even more potent with Dave Mirra, and Ed Greene

The midfielders of King Kenny Ong, never-say-die Sam Hibbins, smooth-moving Vic Michie, led by big-time Singleton in the ruck.
Of course, Jared Rivers is one to tone down the excitement, despite my willingness to pump them up. His favourite players in the Collegians line-up come from the back half of the ground, Matt Warren, Luke McCleary, Tyler Atkinson, and Ben Howard
A well-balanced side that is unstoppable on their day. Round 1, against the long-standing Premier rivals Old Xav’s is where we’ll be for the first RSN Extra match of the day, clear the diary Collegians fans, this will be fun to watch.
OLD XAVERIANS
Old Xaverians will be an intriguing watch throughout 2023. With Toorak Park being redeveloped and out of action, the club will play the majority of their home games at Xavier College in 2023, with five games scheduled at the school and the remaining four currently listed as TBC.
The ‘nomads’ go into this year’s campaign with an added incentive. Celebrating 100 years of red and black excitement. Key inclusions have aligned themselves with the red and black mafia this year - Sam Naismith, Dan Hannebery, Billy Gowers, Josh Green
There’s an aura about Old Xav’s, there always has been. Every club builds themselves up for the contest against the dominators.
First up, Collegians. These sides are the two longest-serving sides in the VAFA’s top-flight. Old Xaverians have featured in every A-section season since 1992. In that time, Xav’s have played off in 16 Grand Finals, winning 13. Collegians since 2006. If anyone knows how to win a Premiership in their centenary season, it’s Collegians.
Both sides are continuously around the mark and preach excellence from the top down. Their most recent encounter was a classic that put the run to the finals wide open.
OLD MELBURNIANS
2022 was there for the taking at OM’s, and it all came crashing down on the eve of September.
Key personnel changes with retirements of Tom Paule, Nick De Steiger, Oscar Hosking. Sam Dunnell opted to change leagues. A large chunk of experience leaves the old dark navy blues.
A summer of recruiting has welcomed handy inclusions in place of those departing. Dylan Clarke (Essendon), Ben Harding (WA), Harry Prendegast (Old Carey) and Jacob Thompson (EDFL) have all joined the club.
Jackson Paine voted in as club skipper, they’re looking to a new dawn with Josh Freezer taking one step back from leadership roles. Freeze will still be planted in the defensive 50 and facing the opposition’s number one forward every week.
Reigning Woodrow Medallist Gus Borthwick will miss the opening part of the year, recovering from an ACL tear. Opportunities await the younger midfielders under Paul Satterley’s watch to step up and make the midfield spot their own.
OLD SCOTCH
If you listened to Grumpy Brian Waldron throughout 2022. The Cardinals window of opportunity has just opened. They have the blueprint, the players, and the coach to propel them from the middle of the William Buck Premier ladder, into the top four.
Senior experience with Andrew Jelbart, Aidan Franetic, Ben Hays, Brodie Easton, Arion Richter-Salter and returning to the club Jordan Clarke after a year away. Youthful exuberance of Tyler Sellers, Harry Stubbings, Hugh Longbottom, Ryan Valentine
It’s all set up for Mark Gnatt, the club has shown the faith in him, and he’s shown the faith in his young troops, who have now had two seasons in A-Section under Gnatty to get an understanding of the rigours that come with playing in the VAFA’s top tier.
Brilliant wins last season cemented their belief, they were no flukes. It happened more than once.
UNIVERSITY BLUES
The points scandal extinguished the University Blues 2022 campaign. Guy Martyn and the club have put that behind them, and eyes firmly looking through the front windscreen of the bus.
On-field in 2022, Blues had to do a lot of chasing in games, leaving themselves with little wiggle room for error.
This year, they’ve added some additional grunt to the engine room with Dane Crognale, “the best from the west” moving across from Caulfield. Key players Marty Gleeson, Ayce Cordy, Sam Grimley, Cam O’Shea have all recommitted for the 2023 season.
The additions of Crognale, and Tom Cutler (Essendon) are significant for the Blues.
The biggest contest for Blues will come in Round 2. The last chapter in this storied history was written in Round 11 of the 2017 season. When the ball is bounced for this match –2,121 days will have elapsed since Blues and Blacks clashed at the Uni Main. Blacks last tasted success over the Blues in Round 10 of 2013

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S
CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS
2022 never got going for the Fields. Hampered by injuries to key pillars from the opening bounce of the season. It will be a vastly different side that runs out this weekend against Old Scotch.
Retirements to Declain Rielly, Keegan Stewart, Isaac Morrisby. Moves elsewhere for Jared Risol, Georgio Varigiannis, Will Barker, Angus Cameron, Chris Diggle, Sam Dorevitch, Lachie Harris, Lachie Stephens, Ingo Dammersmith.
In amongst the list of changes, Will Edwards (2022 captain) and Jack Wallace (2022 vice-captain) have also moved on from the club. Fresh faces, and fresh leaders will be installed to support Guy McKenna having replaced Simon Williams as coach.
On the field, it will look like a brand new team running at out Glen Huntly Oval. This is an opportunity for the Fields to start fresh with a new set of tyres.
OLD HAILEYBURY
It was a finals campaign to remember for Old Haileybury in 2022. A last-gasp victory over Fitzroy in the knockout final, a thumping win over Beaumaris to earn promotion and a spot in the big dance. A gritty, gutsy, determined victory to return to William Buck Premier for the first time since 2011 as Premiers.
Jack Lonie, arguably the most influential in the Haileybury line-up has left the club. And, they won’t be able to call on Kye Turner’s defensive heroics after earning a spot on Melbourne’s AFL list in February.
Stef Martin will pull the jumper on though, under coach Daniel Ward. There has been much intrigue over the signature of Sam Gilbert, approved and then cancelled, at this stage of writing, pending.
He’ll be a focal point for them, right throughout the year but will cause a headache or two for St Kevin’s after the club unfurls its premiership flag this weekend.
UNIVERSITY BLACKS
Uni Blacks return to William Buck Premier as the runners up of the 2022 Premier B Grand Final. The Blacks completed the last three seasons to have been played in heartbreaking fashion. Losing Preliminary Finals in Premier B in 2018 and 2019, plus a 5-point loss in last year’s decider.
Nevertheless, they’re here now. And the formline they bring into A-Section is a sight to behold. For all the praise St Kevin’s defence receives, the Blacks conceded a staggering 42.4 points per game in 2022. They come into this year’s campaign having won 26 of their previous 29 matches.
The headline recruit to join Blacks over the off-season Oscar McDonald, after plying his trade at AFL level, he will be a regular in Dale Bower’s line up.
Blacks won’t need a lot of pushing, and prodding to get themselves into the year. This is a proud football club that feels like they belong in A-Grade, they’ll be breathing fire against the Tonners on Saturday.
There are 90 games for us to work our way through before we finish with the top four. The first installment of the 90 will unfold this weekend.
To say I’m excited is an understatement, I’m bouncing out of my skin, and can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store.
In the words of Greg Champion: Footy’s on, footy’s here again, back to greet me like an old friend.

Its Show Time for Premier B in 2023
VAFA footy is back and for the players, coaches, and supporters, Saturday can’t come quicker.
It’s been another busy off season for Premier B with players and coaches on the move and lots of change for season 2023.
Premier B will begin the season with four new teams entering the mix and there’s sure to be some shake-ups throughout the year.
Old Trinity and St Bernard’s enter Premier B having been relegated from William Buck Premier last year meanwhile Monash Blues and Old Geelong also enter Premier B having been promoted from Premier C last season.
Old Trinity
Old Trinity enters the 2023 season with a brand-new coach Donald McDonald.
McDonald takes the reins after holding the role of Director of Football at Old Scotch, but the former North Melbourne ruckman and Box Hill Hawks premiership coach brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Trinity ruckman Harry Thompson will be pivotal for the side this year after earning team of the year honours last season in premier division.
Thompson will be assisted by club veterans Ed Weatherson and Callum Pohl as well as young guns Oliver and Myles Scott.
When they’re not playing VFL, Trinity will also have the services of Hugo McGlashan, Sam Mason, Charles Beasley, and George Belcher who are all playing at Coburg under former coach of the T’s, Jamie Cassidy-McNamara.
St Bernard’s
While last year didn’t work out for the snowdogs, they’ll take a stack of confidence into the 2023 season.
St Bernard’s are a young team and exposure to premier football last year would no doubt have given the side great insight and experience.
St Bernard’s also have a new coach in Steve Allessio who will take charge in 2023.
Allessio can look forward to coaching some club favourites in Ben Overman and Daniel Mott. Meanwhile Charlie Vague will be looking to continue his strong form into season 2023 after impressive performances throughout last season.
Luca Allesio (son of Steve) is also a notable inclusion for the snow dogs who in recent years have been able to rebound quickly from premier relegation to find themselves back up at the top.
Monash Blues
Monash will enter the premier B competition on a high after their premiership win last year in premier C.
The boys in blue will this year be led by new coach Dylan Cousins who takes over from Mark Passador after his sixyear stint which included last year’s premiership.
Mac Cameron leaves a big hole for the two-blues to fill after deciding to take his footy elsewhere in 2023. Cameron last year took out the L Zachariah medal and also his clubs best and fairest award. Significant shoes to fill.
Old Geelong
Old Geelong also enters the competition after coming up from premier C last season.
They stormed into the grand final from fourth after registering 12 wins for the season and despite the grand final loss by 21 points, they put together a strong year that they can continue to build on.
Last season it was Will Horsfall and Jack Sheridan who stood out for Old Geelong, and both were also gallant during their grand final loss. New recruit Sam Barnett will be a great addition to the Geelong line up after he played in a premiership with St Kevin’s in 2018 before spending time with Footscray in the VFL.
Werribee VFL player Hudson Garoni is also a chance to pull on the Old Geelong jumper when not playing VFL.
This weekend, Old Geelong will take on Beaumaris at Como park and it promises to be a tight contest.
PREMIER B MEN’S THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 6

Beaumaris
Speaking of Beaumaris, they’ll be looking for some redemption this season after bailing out in the preliminary final against Haileybury.
The Sharks are also another club to have a new head coach with Josh Bourke heading to the club.
Some of the off-season inclusions to the Sharks have included Jimmy Freeman from Balwyn who also played VFL with Sandringham. Ben Hempel and Logan Young, also playing at Sandringham, will join the Sharks for season 2022.
Other names include Brandan Young who comes across from Western Australia after playing with West Coast in the WAFL. No doubt the strong string of recruits will help the sharks in 2023 and they’re definitely a team to keep an eye on.
De La Salle
De La Salle will be an interesting side to watch this season. After coming back down to premier B at the end of 2019, they have been competitive but haven’t been able to take their football to the next level.
Last season saw them finish up in 5th with seven wins as they unsuccessfully fought for the final fourth spot for finals.
Also a team with a lot of young talent, De La Salle have added some additional names to their 2023 list with the signings of Liam Murphy who heads back to the club after playing with Blackburn in the Eastern Football League.
Lachie Gawel also joins the club after playing with Park Orchards in the Eastern Football League and a short stint with Carlton in the VFL.
Williamstown CYMS
It was a tough year for Williamstown in season 2022 with only three wins and finishing 8th on the ladder. However, their fresh list will relish the opportunity to continue playing premier B football and they’ll be hungry to improve.
Rob Chan will lead Williamstown as senior men’s captain and will be strongly assisted by both Brad Tucker and Nathan Malkoun. Best and fairest winner from last season Tom Johnstone will also be a key pillar for the Williamstown side as they push for a stronger season.
Fitzroy
Fitzroy finished last season in fourth spot and snuck into the finals. They played eventual premiers Haileybury in round one of the finals and lost in a tight affair by six points.
However, they are a team to watch throughout the year and will be dangerous for opposition sides. Off season changes included the retirement of three club champions with Toby Hudson-Bevege, Matt Kyroussis and Tom O’Donnell all hanging up the boots.
They will be replaced by new recruits to the club with Chas Roberts, Caleb Harward and Jordan Jobling all wearing the Fitzroy jumper in 2023.
With a mixture of youngsters and more experienced players, Fitzroy will be once again threatening in premier B.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers
St Bedes/Mentone will have a stronger line-up in season 2023. Last year they showed glimpses of consistent footy but they’re tipped to come out firing this season. The club has been busy recruiting some former players back to the club.
Kye Beveridge returns to the club after playing VFL with Sandringham and Collingwood. Beveridge is also a former senior best and fairest winner at the club.
Alex Cross also returns to the club having played VFL with Sandringham. Cross is a premiership player with the Tigers as part of their U19 program.
One of their other notable recruits is Alex Smout. Smout spent time playing footy in Canberra as well as playing with GWS in the VFL and along with Beveridge and Cross, will significantly boost their list.
AJAX
Ajax will be looking to mount a strong push for a top four spot this season after recording six wins in 2022.
They have plenty of younger players coming through the club which is positive for their future and great for players gaining experience this season.
Taking charge as coach will be Andrew Jago who will work with senior men’s captain and club veteran Nick Lewis.
Lewis was reappointed captain last month which will see him captain of the club for the seventh consecutive year. He’ll be assisted by vice-captain Kane Nissenbaum as well as key players Brandon Joel, Corey Zielinski and Elliot Debinski.
It promises to be an exciting year in premier B with a plethora of new recruits making things all the more interesting this season. Round one is packed with mouth watering clashes across the board so grab your coat and your footy and head on down to watch the return of VAFA football in 2023!

PREMIER C MEN’S
A look into Prem C for 2023, do you see what I see?
After wading through two pandemic interruption-filled seasons, Premier C footy was back in full swing in 2022. Now with a full season under their belts, the clubs will be primed for another tilt at the crown, this is how they’re shaping up.
Hampton Rovers 2nd | 15 wins | 5 losses
The Rovers sat sixth on the table when play was called in 2021 and improved massively to finish second in 2022, unfortunately falling just one point short of a Grand Final. But the Rovers should not be discounted in the slightest, they’ve shown they can rise in quick time and are a real chance to go one better in 2023. Anthony Quon’s side will open their campaign on the road against Marcellin.
Marcellin 8th | 7 wins | 13 losses
Simon Abrahams side weren’t exactly where they wanted to be at the conclusion of last season but did show signs of improvement going from four wins in the shortened 2021 season to seven in 2022. They may not have given the finals a shake last year, but let it be known that their best can still worry all their opponents in Premier C, don’t be surprised if they make a run in 2023. Marcellin kick off their season at home when they welcome the Rovers.
Mazenod 3rd | 13 wins | 7 losses
Over the past couple of seasons prior, the Nodders were a consistent ‘there abouts’ side, but in 2022 they finally made the leap and really announced themselves to the division. Peter Banfield’s side got exactly what they bargained for, finishing third and falling out of the finals in the first round by just seven points to eventual Grand Finalists Old Geelong. Keep your eye on Mazenod to be up there again in 2023, they’ll head out to PEGS Sporting Fields in Round 1 to face the freshly promoted PEGS.
Old Camberwell 4th | 10 wins | 5 losses (Division 1 runners up)
They finished fourth in Division One last season, but that did not stop the Grammarians from making a dream run to the big dance, earning them promotion to Premier C. Although they’ll come in at the bottom of the food chain, they have recent form on their side along with the ability to achieve big things late in a season, look for them to shake up the competition in 2023. Old Camberwell will open their season at Gordon Barnard Reserve against Old Carey.
Old Carey 9th | 1 win | 15 losses (Premier B)
After what was a tough and forgettable season 2022 that saw them sing the song following just one of their 16 outings in Premier B, Old Carey will be chomping at the bit to sink their teeth into some Premier C action in the hopes of stringing some wins on the board. Aaron Bailey’s men will be a determined group in 2023, as they set out in their hunt for redemption. The Panthers will begin the hunt on the road against Old Camberwell.
Old Ivanhoe 5th | 12 wins | 8 losses
They were consistently finishing in postseason contention but fell short of a finals berth by percentage in 2022. Although Jarrod Gieschen’s soldiers know they’re good enough to avoid such bad luck this time around. It’s known they can take care of business against lowerranked opponents, but they’ll need to start getting it done against the big boys this year to get back in the finals race. Old Ivanhoe face Parkdale on the road in Round 1 and will look to make a statement.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 8
Aiden Box Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.
Ormond 7th | 10 wins | 10 losses
Considered by many as a premiership contender and a real challenge to play against prior to the 2022 season, Ormond didn’t quite live up to the lofty expectations. This will fuel their fire for this season though as coach Greg Hoskin readies his troops for another fight with the top dogs and some new challengers. Ormond will get the Round 1 bye to assess their competition before getting their first chance to prove they’re still in their window of contention in Round 2 against the Hampton Rovers.
Parkdale Vultures 6th | 11 wins | 9 Losses
The Vultures were strong defensively in 2022, but unfortunately fell one win short of contending for that fourth finals ticket. Owen Lalor will be looking for improvement in his squad who won their last three games last season, they’ll look to be stout at both ends this year. Parkdale will battle it out with Old Ivanhoe in Round 1 at Gerry Green Reserve.
PEGS 1st | 16 wins | 1 loss (Division 1 premiers)
Fresh from a Division premiership run in which they only dropped one game for the year, PEGS earned a rightful promotion to the Premier C division. They were dominant last season on both ends of the field and with Andrew Horne at the helm, will be looking forward to more of the same in 2023. Take PEGS as an early outsider to contend. They’ll host Mazenod in Round 1.

Congratulations also to long-term VAFA media personalities Michael Crooks (InnerFM) and Glen Scarborough (InnerFM & North West FM) on their VAFA Life Membership awards.
New Hawthorn President Andy Gowers stole the show with terrific stories from yesteryear, while Michael Fitzgerald reminisced on the InnerFM broadcast and the team that worked tirelessly to bring the match of the day coverage to life on 96.5FM.

OLD XAVERIANS CELEBRATE 100 YEARS
This year, the competition’s most successful club Old Xaverians celebrate 100 years of existence. To mark the occasion, the club is hosting its Centenary Gala on Saturday, May 20 at Centrepiece.
The list of Old Xaverians legends goes on forever, we’re told a majority will be in attendance, with many Premiership success stories to be recounted on the night. Will Xav’s add another senior trophy to the cabinet in their Centenary season like Collegians did in 1992? Only time will tell.
FATHER-TIME CATCHES UP WITH PENINSULA’S GREATEST PIRATE
The VAFA wishes to congratulate Shaun Payze on a stellar 20-year career with Old Peninsula. Over the off-season, Payze announced his retirement after 428 senior games, and 1033 goals. According to the record books he is the equal games record-holder for the league with Peter Brabender from Old Paradians. Although, our statisticians claim Payze has also got 1 reserves game, and 1 representative game to his name, making his total 430.
EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN FOR PRAHRAN FC
This is the new look supporters will see when Prahran takes the field in Division 1 on the weekend. Players will take the field in a strip similar to the traditional jumper worn in the club’s VFA days. The alternate or clash strip is a nod to the club’s partnership with Southbank Amateur Football Club.
In 2011, Prahran Amateur Football Club formed a partnership with Assumption College wearing the school strip on away games. Premierships followed in 2011 (Div 3) and 2017 (Div 2) but the partnership was dissolved at the end of last year. Prahran will play its home games at Lucas Reserve East Malvern this season while Toorak Park re-development proceeds.

Already salivating with a Grand Final rematch to open up
It’s that time once again, the footy is back with the first round of games this Saturday afternoon, can you believe it. With that in mind, let’s wipe the slate clean from the off season and go through each team’s prospects for 2023 PEGS FC and Old Camberwell Grammarians move to the Premier C, whilst St Mary’s Salesian and Whitefriars drop down to Division 2. West Brunswick and Ivanhoe have been able to leapfrog their position into Division 1 after an incredible Grand Final in 2022 UHS-VU and Preston Bullants were dropped from Premier C and will make up the newcomers in 2023.
KEW FC
Kew Bears are shaping up for another big season, unlucky not to move up to Premier C last season after falling at the final hurdle in the Preliminary to Old Camberwell Coach Ian Aitken will be looking to get the most out of his team this season to have a chance to head back into Premier C for the first time since 2017.
The Bears have a good track record at home ground at Victoria Park only losing to PEGS and salvaging a draw in the latter part of 2022 Michael Hannen, key forward will look to continue his form of last year to get Kew home in a lot more games after kicking 36 last season.
Consistency like last season will be the key for Kew as they chase that elusive premiership. The Bears start round 1 at Packer Park under the lights at 6.40pm against Rivals Glen Eira Gryphons.
GLEN EIRA
The Gryphons surprised many in 2022, finishing third behind Kew, and PEG S at the end of the home and away season.
Coach Jon Edgar will be optimistic this season on the chances for the Gryphons, they will have to do this season without Nick Dickinson and also ex-captain Julius Waras Carstensen as both of them announced their retirement over the off season.
There’s expectation and hope on Alex Ewrin-Ross and Stuart Carey both taking their games to new heights this season if Glen Eira are to stand up once again.
The Gryphons take on Kew at Packer Park under the lights on Saturday. They come into the contest with a good track record at home only dropping one game, it should be an absolute cracker.
IVANHOE AFC
Ivanhoe are back in Division 1 for the first time since 2016, fresh off the Division 2 Premiership against West Brunswick winning by just a single point.
Having a very impressive track record at home at Ivanhoe park, it will be very interesting to see how they compete in 2023, Ash Close carved his way to 71 goals in 2022 followed by his twin tower Billy Drake who smashed 61 goals. Close has a different role this year, no longer the senior coach, handing that over to close friend, and competition best and fairest Wayne Schultz. Whilst, Drake has opted to play footy elsewhere in 2023.
Wayne Schultz will be wanting to ideally see the Hoers challenge those top sides. Ivanhoe are home to West Brunswick at Ivanhoe Park to open up the season, the Division 2 Grand Final rematch, will it be a replay of six months ago?
OAKLEIGH
The Krushers will be aiming to really climb the ladder this year to get into finals since the 2018 Preliminary Final. A mixed bag at home in 2023 at the W.A Scammell Reserve going at 5 wins and 4 losses.
Young coach James Francis will try to look to key forward Aaron Cloke to emulate the year he had in 2022 by smashing out 75 goals including a bag of 10 vs St Marys. The brothers Liam and Tom Gillard will be keen to help make the Krushers push for that elusive final berth. Krushers take on Prahran at Scammell Reserve at 2pm, will the Krushers be able to take one up on their previous year ladder competitors?
OLD PENINSULA
The Pirates will be looking to rebuild after they survived relegation in 2022, coach Peter Williamson will try to get the most out of his playing group, Bradley Schuurman, Ben Williamson will be instrumental figures of motivation for the group to keep grounded throughout this year.
After 20 years with his name inside the forward 50, the Pirates will need to call on a new forward after Shaun Payze made the decision over the pre-season to hang up the boots. 428 games, 1033 goals alongside his name.
Having some success at home last year they will be looking at that to get them a good start. Therry Penola are their first assignment at the Harry Mcdonald Oval at 2pm.

PRAHRAN FC
Prahran FC are looking the goods for season 2023, bolstering their playing lineup with many recruits such as Alex Maxwell, William Axford-Wood, Mackenzie Mayne to name a few. 2022 was a pretty decent season for Prahran, despite not making finals since 2017, will this be the season that they climb into finals and push a case for Premier C ?
Brett Dickinson the coach would be hoping to see the best out of Matt Clifford as he slavered 58 goals including a masterclass of nine against St Marys.
A mixed bag at Toorak Park going at 4 wins 5 losses, but will look to take that record to another level in 2023. Like Old Xaverians in William Buck Premier, Prahran will not have a home ground as such through this year, making their trek back to finals slightly tougher. Opening up the campaign, they’re travelling to play Oakleigh first game. Will they take their game to new heights?
PRESTON BULLANTS
Preston Bullants are back into Division 1 for the first time since winning the flag in 2019 against UHS-VU.
Coach George Cotsonis will be looking to try to get his team back into the Premier C despite not having the best of luck in 2022. Rory and Conor Howard will need to be back to their best again for that to happen Ethan Lowe with 22 goals with a best of five against UHS has had a strong pre-season, and is expected to assist in getting his team over the line in more games this season.
The Ants will be looking to get there season off to a flyer facing off against UHS-VU at the W.R Ruthven Reserve at 2pm
THERRY PENOLA
Where to begin with this group of Lions ?
This is the time to take their game to a new level this season as Brendon Payne tries to bring the Lions back into the finals contention after having an average season.
Kane O’Halloran, a brilliant forward who amassed 52 goals in 2022. Jackson Young, Nicholas Castalidi and co will be looking to get off to a fast start when they travel to Old Peninsula.
UHS-VU
UHS-VU coming down to Division 1 with the Bullants will try their best to get themselves back into Premier C for 2024. Coached by Paul Rocke, he will be looking to Ben Dimattina, Fraser Allen to try and steer the ship to get them back up and running for season 2023.
Led by James McGee in the forward line kicking 22 goals in season 2022 with a best of four against Ormand will he be the difference to get the UHS into a lot more games this season?
UHS-VU will take on Preston for the first game at WR. Ruthevan Reserve kicking off at 2pm. Two evenly matched sides, a contest that’s sure to go down to the wire.
WEST BRUNSWICK
The Magpies after falling agonisingly short by a point to Ivanhoe in the Division 2 decider of 2022, have returned to Division 1.
Coach William Dilllon will be keen to see how his team competes against the likes of Kew, Glen Eira, and Ivanhoe AFC. With Liam Buckler slamming home 40 goals closely aided by Ben Hutchins with 36 they will need to put their kicking boots on this season as they will look to do that again in 2023.
West Brunswick came off a very impressive record last season at Ransford Oval in Parkville, the ground is fortress for the Magpies. The aim, bank as many wins as possible this season when playing there.
They’re on the road this weekend, against their grand final nemesis Ivanhoe. Will the Magpies be able to swoop in and get their first win for the season ?
I think so, but I guess we will wait to find out.

Brunswick footy, Bloods culture, and the battle of the Yarra Valley all on offer
After a thrilling finals series with Ivanhoe AFC producing an incredible last-minute victory to snatch the trophy over West Brunswick by a point, the VAFA Men’s Division 2 is gearing up for an exciting 2023 season, with several teams looking to make an impact and push for promotion to the top tier.
AQUINAS
Aquinas are fighting hard to work their way to the top four after a resilient 2022 season.
Fortunately, with six of their first seven games at home, it may provide them with the opportunity to create a strong foundation and a bit of confidence for the rest of the season.
Last season they were in the middle of the table at season’s end, an off-season of recruiting could see them break into this year’s final four, and be a contender when it matters most.
BRUNSWICK
After coming down from Division 1, 2022 saw a strong performance and reached the finals.
Coach Tommy Hunter endured much turnover over the off-season resulting in a younger side which may provide opportunities to their 19s players.
Tall midfielder Tom Hedley joins the club with his older gun brother Josh, in addition to quick footed Harris Mitter and Jake Ralston who’ll bring a tough physicality to the backline.
Runner up Best & Fairest Ben Wilson is seeming to be a prospect after playing at another level in pre-season.
Facing the Old Paradians who kicked them out of the finals last season, Hunter made it clear the team will bring Brunswick footy to round 1.
BULLEEN TEMPLESTOWE
A tough 2022 season stung the Bullants 6-12. Possession was a struggle for the team, but with Andrew Verga at the helm and a strong pre-season, the golden wings are likely to rise the ranks and pressure for a finals.
The club has had a lean few years, last year was somewhat stabilising for the Ants, this year is another stepping stone in getting the club back to its glory days.
MHSOB
The 2022 season was a tale of inaccuracy for the Unicorns. Unable to convert their quick footy to the scoreboard left them empty handed as a result of an excruciatingly narrow miss from the finals.
Winning six of their first seven games ushered by three one hundred-point thrashings, the Unicorns will be ones to watch out the gate this season. They’ll be hoping to have more players take their game to new heights in 2022, with the campaign kicking off against Bulleen this weekend.
OLD PARADIANS
Old Paradians had a belter of a season in 2022 with thirteen wins, finals bound and leaping to preliminary falling short after a brush with the Magpies.
Justin Whitcher’s eye for footy is likely to leave a mark for 2023 if the boys can translate footy to field, especially against a discontent and hungry round 1 Brunswick.
OLD YARRA COBRAS
Coming in this year as a merged club (Yarra Old Grammarians and Manningham Cobras), Coach Nathan Monaco is looking to make a dent in Division 2.
Inclusions such as Anthony Lamana from Old Xaverians, Nathan Sambevski from Kew and Lewis Mitchell from Tasmania are likely to create concern for opposition.

Francis Joseph and Eddison Donelan are ones to watch after an impressive pre-season.
Overall, Monaco has placed much emphasis for a Cobra culture on attention to detail, setups and game-plan to bounce back from the 2022 merger problems and strive for a finals spot.
PARKSIDE
The Parkside boys endured a dogged 2022 after a 12 point loss in the Division 3 Grand Final.
It’ll be a hard season being promoted up to Division 2, but if their resilient finals campaign tells us anything about Demons culture, they’ll bring the heat against the relegated Division 1 Whitefriars in game one.
And, if it is #YearoftheDevils, they may even snag a win against their newfound rivals South Melbourne in round 3 in the Grand Final rematch.
SOUTH MELBOURNE
Patrick O’Callaghan’s South Melbourne squad stormed through Division 3 with a 13-3 record and a convincing finals series.
Passing the torch to Nick Abbott, we’re excited to see if the footy field bleeds for the bloods for the jump up to Division
2. With the recent Australian Grand Prix engulfing the Albert Park facility, the fixture sees the Swans away for their first six games.
It won’t be the warmest of welcomes to Division 2 for the Bloods, but, if they’re like their counterparts in the AFL, it’s exactly how they like it.
ST MARY’S SALESIAN
A quarter of a decade since the merger the saints were left barren last season, left 0-18 and 2734 points scored against.
A year for rebuilding, a culture for confidence, Clay Tait has a hefty task on his hands to return classic Saints footy in the drop down to Division 2.
WHITEFRIARS
The drop from Division 1 after a competitive 3-15 left much thought for Head Coach Lucas Matthews to rebound in 2023.
The Friars have seen an optimistic pre-season adding some flair to the roster, Spencer Larson, Josh and Jack Coates from Mitcham, and the return of James Perrin and Jack Elmer
Lucas’s eye for talent has picked a couple young guns to develop including Matthew Dickenson, Noah Sealy and Pat Cotter, we’ll see them test the waters in various positions.
A heavy emphasis on ball movement, offensive and defensive transition, a confident culture, with the admixture of a roster filled to the brim with talent, the Friars are certainly ones to watch this season.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S
Get ready for the most electrifying season of VAFA Division 3 football yet. The stage is set for some thrilling clashes and underdog stories.
Last season, South Melbourne Districts took the crown by storming over Parkside in the Grand Final. Now, they’ve both moved up to division 2, leaving the field wide open for a new champion.
Elsternwick and Canterbury are the two teams to beat this year, both having three representatives in the 2022 team of the year. Both sides will feel like they have unfinished business and a point to prove after reaching September and then finding themselves out of the running before Grand Final day.
Elsternwick’s Matt Harvey, Matt Ball, and Ben Reece were vital cogs in the team’s success last year, while Canterbury’s Nick Szabo, Ryan Murray, and Tom Lowden also had standout seasons.
The Cobras will open the season facing off against Richmond Central Snakes at Kevin Bartlett Reserve, in a battle of the reptiles last year it was Canterbury taking the points in both clashes. Don’t rule out the tenacity of the yellow and black under new coach Zac Jardine.
Jardine joins the Tigers with experience of the competition having done his coaching apprenticeship at Hawthorn AFC
The red and black Elsternwick footy club are wearing the white shorts against Wattle Park AFC on Saturday twilight footy, this will be the My Sport Live-VAFA Live-Stream match of the round. Can the Wickers keep the momentum rolling from 2022 or will the Animals kickstart their year on the best possible foot?
They’ve got some stiff competition, including the likes of rising universities, La Trobe and Swinburne, as well as Power House, who are coming down from Division 2 after a tough season.
The House is ready to rock in Albert Park, new recruits have joined the green, white and black. Mitch Newman has had a stellar pre-season and committed to the club, he’s proven himself through the practice matches and is ready to stand in the centre square at the opening bounce against Swinburne on Saturday.
Jeremy “shining light” Hill was one of the clubs best players, although beaten by Ben Circosta in the best and fairest count at the club last year, he put together a terrific individual season, and the expectation he places on himself to perform at the highest possible level is second to none.
Stephen Boland is the playmaker and general in the defence. While 2022 was a lean year from the wins and loss perspective, the club is primed to make its 76th season a memorable one.
Opponents Swinburne fell short in last year’s Division 4 Grand Final, but come up to Division 3 eager on redemption. Three players from the Razorbacks finished inside the competition’s team of the year. In a strong show of faith in the club, more than half the senior 22 from 2022 re-committed to the side as the early days of the pre-season got underway. A strong core playing group, led by Declan Watts are keen to make their imprint on Division 3 this year.
One team I’m eager to watch this season is Hawthorn AFC. Led by Charlie Boots, one of the league’s best defenders, they have the potential to rise up the ladder if they can consistently score well.

The Hawks had to grind their way into the 2022 season and will be looking to get off to a much faster start this year. Mark Murray has recommitted as the senior coach and is eager to further drive improvement from the disappointment of last season. One game to pencil into your calendar is the clubs annual WINGS match, a front-runner of VAFA clubs in the mental health space.
La Trobe University is the Hawks opening round opponent, coming up as the Division 4 Premiers will give the club plenty of confidence and will be led on field for the third year in a row by Andy Castles, supported by Pat Lindsay as his vice-captain. Ricky Nolan had a stellar debut as coach in 2022 taking the premiership along the way, this year he’ll be looking to push his side up the D3 ladder, and the double promotion in consecutive years.
The 2023 season promises to be full of surprises, twists and turns.

VAFA’s Most Competitive Competition in 2023
2022 was a very competitive season for Division 4 with five teams truly in contention all through the season.
La Trobe was the team that ran the division for most of the season with both of their senior and reserve sides making it to the Grand Final.
In the seniors, La Trobe took out the Grand Final against Swinburne in a close game by 15 points. At the conclusion of the season, both La Trobe and Swinburne saw promotion to Division 3, whilst North Brunswick will be looking for redemption after relegation to Division 4.
Albert Park
The Falcons are a side that is incredibly hard to predict, over the offseason the squad has lost players during the transfer period but has managed to retain their core including 2022 OJ Meehan medal winner Sam Lee
The Falcons will be seeking to get on a run early and solidify itself in the top 4. Albert Park will have their back against the walls come seasons start with 6 of their first 7 games away from home however, the Falcons will take comfort with a good run home with 8 of their last 11 games at home.
The Falcons finished their 2022 season with a record of 6-9 and only finished one win outside of the top 4.
The club faces North Brunswick in what will be a major test for the team in their season opener. North Brunswick may have been relegated, but the Bulls still managed to put together 6 wins in Division 3 so they will be a tough task for the Falcons.
Box Hill North
The Demons are tipped to be the team that’ll take the biggest jump this season. Over the offseason, the Demons have reshaped their list injecting plenty of youth into the side and coach Jeff D’Amato will be looking to lead his side into the pointy end of the season. With a mix of youth and experience now at the club, it is a very exciting time for the team.
2022 saw the Demons struggle with only one win for their season. The win however was a big 60-point win against the Sharks which shows they are capable of big victories in big games.
Box Hill North will host Eley Park in what is a redemption game for both sides. Both teams put together less than memorable 2022 campaigns with both sides clear at the bottom of the table. With club leaders Beau Parthenides and Jordan Gasparini leaving the Dees, the new-look Box Hill North side will look to get their season off to the perfect start with a win over the Sharks.
Eley Park
The Sharks look to bring the fire in 2023 and the squad will look to be like Bruce from Jaws rather than Lenny from Shark Tale when they take to the field. Eley Park has taken a major step already this season dominating the transfer period with over 10-15 new players set to join the Sharks for their season redemption.
The Sharks had a record of 2-14 in 2022 with their wins being a big win over Box Hill North and a massive upset in a thrilling clash against Masala. The Sharks dipped at the end of the season with their last 5 losses being by an average of 91 points.
The Sharks will start their 2023 campaign against rivals Box Hill North. Both teams will want to kick off their season with a spark so expect an exciting match when these two sides clash in the first game of the season. Eley Park may have been graded an ‘A’ for their preseason and transfers but round 1 is where we get an indication if the Sharks have come to cause a fright in 2023.

Masala
The Tigers will look to bring in a new brand of #SpicyFooty to take their game to the next level in 2023. The Tigers have brought in some great talents of both youth and experience and will look to have these additions make them the premiership team they are seeking to be. The Tigers however will be without team-of-the-year ruckman Dale Gibb and key players Tim Hoffman and Tom Edwards
In 2022, with a record of 7-9, the Tigers finished 4th and secured themselves a spot in the finals. Masala was then able to pull together an incredible come-from-behind victory against St Johns - one of the best wins in club history.
Masala will host rivals St Johns in their first match of the season and will look to put a spicy spell on the JOCs. The Tigers may have lost both times during the regular season against their foes, but a win in their most recent affair in an elimination final sets the scene for what should be a good match between two top sides.
North Brunswick
The Bulls will be looking at the 2023 season as their redemption story. North Brunswick put together a reasonable season albeit not one they had pictured. This season will see the Bulls return to Division 4, the division where they completed the premiership double in 2018 a feat that they will be hungry to reproduce.
The Bulls have 5 of their first 6 games at home to kick off their season but will have a tough run home with their last 3 games away from Allard Park.
2022 saw the Bulls put together a fair season with a record of 6-10 where they had big wins against Parkside and dual wins over Emmaus St Leos (Now Wattle Park). The Bulls were a side that didn’t struggle to hit the scoreboard often, however, sometimes struggled against the big opposition.
North Brunswick will kick off their 2023 campaign when they host Albert Park in what should be a good competitive match. The Bulls will look to use this match to make a statement and reintroduce themselves, with hopes of chasing another flag in 2023.
St Johns
St Johns has a big season in front of them and will look to go a few steps further than their previous season in order to take out the premiership. The JOCs will have a new coach at the helm with Alan Sutherland joining the team with over 30 years of football experience.
The JOCs will however be without key forward Rohan Scott who had 35 goals from only 8 games in 2022. St Johns however has retained key players Corey Ely and Nick Terrill who will look to take St John’s to their first seniors flag since 2011.
2022 saw the JOCs impress all as they ended their regular season with a record of 11-1-3. This included winning 6 of their first 7 matches including wins against premiers La Trobe and rivals Masala. The JOCs looked to make a play to go all the way in the finals however they were defeated heartbreakingly by Masala in a game where they led for most of the day.
It may only be round 1, but this is possibly the biggest game on the St John’s calendar as they take on rivals Masala away. The JOCs did win both games in the regular season in 2022 against the Tigers and will come into the game with an even chance of victory.
Teams and viewers of the division should look forward to what should be a thrilling season of football. All teams appear to have a genuine chance and a path to the premiership and it’s going to be exciting to see which team will be the one to take the titles with both hands.

Hayden Troiani (Old Xaverians)
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Tom Fantasia (Old Xaverians)
Tom came down to the OXFC in 2015 straight from school and was part of the Under 19 premiership team. Since then, Tom has played most of his footy through the Under 23’s and Thirds competitions. A jack of all trades who has been able to play from full forward, to full back, and a pinch hit in the ruck, Tom is an incredibly popular member of the club, who will surely have many more games left in him.
Hayden came to the club in 2015 straight out of school and was part of the Under 19 Premiership team that year. Since, he has developed into an integral member of the senior midfield. His tenacious tackling and evasive sidestep has made him a much loved OXFC player and one we hope to see more of in the future. 100

Who’s going to stop the St Kevin’s three-peat?
We are fast approaching the 2023 William Buck Premier Women’s season, with it all set to kick off on April 14 as the Caulfield Grammarians take on St Kevin’s under lights at E.E Gunn Reserve. St Kevin’s will be looking to defend their premiership title, having beat Kew in last year’s Grand Final.
This year, the Coburg Lions are joining the women’s competition and we’ll be treated to five games each weekend, as St Mary’s Salesian drop out. The competition will also be expanding to 18 matches for the first time this season, as per the 2022-2024 Women’s Football Competition Game Plan.
Here’s a look at the ten teams all vying for this year’s Premiership.
Caulfield Grammarians
After a massive loss to St Kevin’s in last year’s preliminary final, 93-14, the Grammarians will be searching for redemption this season. Shanae Carter was last year’s best and fairest winner for Caulfield, earning Team of the Year selection alongside teammate Charlie Anderson They’ll be looking to amend the mistakes they made in the prelim last year under the Friday night lights against St Kevin’s in Round One.
St Kevin’s
Last year’s back-to-back premiers will be hoping to pull off a three-peat this year after a dominant grand final victory against Kew. St Kevin’s will be under new leadership this year for the first time since 2017, with Sophie Straford and Sarah Cameron both stepping down. Bree Doyle capped off her year last year with a third St Kevin’s best and fairest award, she has been announced as the club captain, alongside inaugural player Margaret Gleeson for the 2023 season. Tom Purcell remains the coach, and is excited about the prospect of a new look SKOB side this year.
Kew FC
Apart from St Kevin’s, Kew was the best side in 2022 and were the only side to actually defeat SKOB in the home and away season. Kew has the best player in the competition, Dakota Villiva, who was named in the best players last year 14 out of 17 times- all in her debut season too. Kew only lost twice in last year’s home-andaway season, once to St Kevin’s and to Caulfield, and will be hoping to go one better this year.
Fitzroy
After not competing in the Premier division last year, Fitzroy has moved up to the competition this season and looked promising in their practice match at the start of April, albeit against an undermanned Hawthorn team. They face a tough challenge first up against Kew but will be hoping to give it their best shot.
Old Xaverians
Finished in sixth place last year to miss out on finals, having only won four games for the season, including an impressive win against the fifth place West Brunswick. Gabby Golds and Gab Henderson featured in the team of the year and hopefully will help them to win a few more games this year.
Collegians
The purple army join William Buck Premier Women’s in 2023. Finishing inside the top 4 in Premier B last year, the Lions, will feel at home in the VAFA’s top flight coming up with Fitzroy and Old Scotch. Two sides they had strong battles with last year and were evenly matched as the year unfolded.
Old Scotch
The Cardinals finished last season in Premier B Women’s in fourth spot. A fairytale run through the finals saw them beat Fitzroy to claim the premiership for the second time, having also won it in 2019. Scotch’s coach, Dean Anderson, was the Premier B Team of the Year coach last year, and will be hoping for even more success whilst competing in the premier division.

West Brunswick
West Brunswick managed to finish the season in fifth last season, after recording only six wins for the season, however were knocked out in a close game, 10-4, against Melbourne Uni Women’s in an elimination final. They did record some impressive wins last season, including over fellow finalist Caulfield Grammarians.
Melbourne Uni Women’s
The 2018 Premiers were beaten in the semi-finals last year, falling to Caufield Grammarians and unable to contend for the title any further. Guided by new head coaches, Bronte Ryan and Emily Fox, MUWFC starts their season off against Coburg, in a battle of the oldest vs the competition’s newest club and will be looking to start their season off strongly.
Coburg Lions
The VAFA is welcoming the Coburg Lions this season, after transferring from the South Eastern Women’s Football League. Coburg were strong competitors in their previous league in 2021, finishing in the top five, going on to play finals in a COVID-19 interrupted season. It will be interesting to see how they go up against VAFA’s oldest club, Melbourne Uni, in round one.
In an exciting announcement for William Buck Premier Women’s, KommunityTV has extended their partnership in 2023, meaning nine women’s home & away games plus all finals will be streamed live, with all matches available on demand. Make sure to tune in to round one with live coverage of Melbourne Uni Women’s vs. Coburg, as we look towards what will be an exciting season as women’s football continues to expand.

Can anyone catch Old Xaverians?
The Holmesglen Under 19 Premier competition is a breeding ground for the next generation of VAFA stars. Players in this competition will be looking to put in strong patches of form, potentially earning the call up into senior sides, and be in line for the Anytime Fitness Rising Star award.
As well as higher honours, the opportunity to win an Under 19 Premiership for the club, is considered just as important as that of a senior club premiership.
Caulfield Grammarians
2022: 5th | 10 wins | 8 losses
Caulfield Grammarians has become a mainstay in the Under 19 Premier competition. Their consistency continued last season, but they weren’t quite able to clinch a top four finish. They’ll look to build upon their strong form in such a competitive 2023 division.
De La Salle
2022: 8th | 5 wins | 13 losses
De La will roll out an abundance of fresh faces for the 2023 season at the Dairy Bell. A majority of Simon Miller’s squad are entering into their first year of U19s football, eager to make their mark on the competition. They are aiming to improve off the back of a lacklustre 2022 campaign. 2023 looks to be an exciting year of youth development at Waverley Oval.
Old Brighton
2022: 3rd | 13 wins | 5 losses
Last year’s Grand Finalists were consistent performers in 2022. The Tonners will look to turn the tables this season in an attempt to take the crown from Old Xaverians. The squad has put in an impressive preseason and competition for spots looks as fierce as ever.
Old Scotch
2022: 4th | 13 wins | 5 losses
After a very solid showing in 2022, the Cardinals are aiming to push for the ultimate success in 2023. Bryce McGain will once again take the reins and is doing all he can behind the scenes to improve his side by 10-15 percent. A small margin of improvement to what is already a talented team should see them be able to consistently match it with Xavs, Brighton, and St. Kevin’s.
Old Xavierians
2022: 1st | Under 19 Premier Men’s Premiers
It will be difficult for the red and black mafia to top their stellar performance last season. After not dropping a game for the first 16 rounds, the Xavierians went on to achieve the ultimate glory against Old Brighton last September. It’s no secret the Xavs possess tremendous depth and will no doubt utilise it in an effort to go ‘backto-back’ in 2023.
Players to watch: Sam Hansen, Jude Sassi, Ben Bilson McGillen, Hamish MacIsaac, Hayden Woodhouse, Oscar Duncan.
St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers
2022: 1st | Under 19 Division 1 Men’s Premiers
After a dominant 2022 campaign, the Tigers find themselves in the Premier division for the first time in several years.
Though this side will look significantly different to the one that nearly went undefeated in Division 1 last season. Majority of last year’s team have progressed to the senior ranks, leaving plenty of opportunity for those wanting to seize a spot in Evan Ryder & Tighe Chandler’s team.
SBMT entered three U19 squads in 2023, signalling great depth for the year ahead. Though Senior men’s coach Steve D’Andrea has made it abundantly clear that he plans to expose U19s to senior level, so don’t be surprised if you see some of the below names lace up in Premier B Men’s at Brindisi St.
Players to watch: Jake Ryder, Jay Bolton, Jake Harding, Jack Ferraro, Dash McMaster.

St. Bernard’s
2022: 6 th | 9 wins | 9 losses
Former Collingwood VFL identity Marcus Barham will take the reins of the St. Bernard’s Under 19s in 2023. The Snowdogs performed solidly last season but weren’t quite able to crack the top four. They’ll aim to break away from the middle pack this year and assert themselves as a headache away match for the opposing team.
St. Kevin’s
2022: 7th | 6 wins | 12 losses
After a few lean years in Premier, SKOB plan to push for the top four in 2023. The attendance of U19s throughout the preseason has been consistent and strong, indicating a strong desire to climb back up the ladder. The squad has a strong composition of younger and older boys. The older demographic, led by Flynn Clark, have taken it upon themselves to drive the standard for the 2023 campaign, not wanting to waste a single opportunity. SKOB will loan Seb Duffy to the Sandringham Dragons but are hopeful to see him feature at T H King Reserve throughout the season.
Players to watch: Jasper Conquest, Jack Palmer, Tom Davidson, Nick Tonge, Ollie Gill, Cooper Chaffey, Harry Kirkwood.
University Blues
2022: 9 th | 2 wins | 16 losses
After narrowly avoiding relegation in 2022, Uni Blues have regenerated and rejuvenated their squad leading into a fresh season. After a tough year in what was a hard-hitting competition, the Blues are seeking redemption.
ROUND 1 TIPS
Williamstown CYMS
2022: 2nd | 14 wins | 4 losses
Williamstown enter 2023 looking to avenge the conclusion of last year’s season. After a strong and consistent showing throughout the home and away season, regrettably fell short during their finals campaign. The ‘buy-in’ throughout a long preseason has left incumbent coach Darren Ryan impressed and eager for the year ahead. Williamstown will field two Under 19 sides at Fearon Reserve this season.
