SEASON 2024 - April 13
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, I’m Paul Newton the VAFA 2024 President.
It’s an honour to serve as the Association’s president and I’m very grateful for the trust members afforded me at the 2023 AGM in voting me in as a Board Member. Whilst some of you already know me from my days at Old Carey Grammarians, I very much look forward to meeting many more of the VAFA community throughout the season and hearing firsthand on how your club is progressing, both challenges and triumphs.
Whilst the season commenced April 6th for our Thirds and Holmesglen Under 19’s, the remainder of the competition gets underway this weekend. Round 1 is inevitably an anxious time for coaches, players, support staff, committees, and supporters with everyone finding their feet and much anticipation as to how teams will fare against the competition. WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S
The race begins for supremacy in William Buck Premier Men’s
If unpredictability equals excitement, then William Buck Premier Men’s Season 2024 is set to be a blockbuster, with most pundits expecting the top grade to be extremely even and fiercely competitive.
COLLEGIANS begin with the target on their back as the reigning champions for the first time since 2013, having put the pain of recent Grand Final disappointments behind them in no uncertain terms.
Their dominant 15-and-3 home & away campaign saw them finish 2 games clear on top. They snuck home over Uni Blues in a thrilling Semi Final, then dominated on Grand Final Day to rocket away to a brilliant 85-point win.
Jared RIVERS has since handed the coaching reins to fellow former Melbourne AFL player Jordie McKENZIE, while on-field leader Dave MIRRA has hung up the boots. Reigning best & fairest Sam SOFRONIDIS will likely spend most of his time in Collingwood’s VFL program as he hunts an AFL opportunity.
But with some young talent ready to push up and break into the senior line-up, the Lions certainly have the pieces to challenge for their first back-to-back titles since 2011-12.
Last season’s runners-up ST KEVIN’S have been a model of consistency in the modern era, playing in the last five Premier Men’s Grand Finals, for 3 wins and 2 losses.
The 2023 decider turned out to be an afternoon to forget and SKOBs will be keen to reclaim their place at the top of the mountain in 2024.
Coach Anthony LYNCH will take a relatively settled line-up into the new season, with minimal change at senior level but plenty of young talent to introduce, given their U19 team also made the Grand Final in 2023. Expect St Kevin’s to be there and thereabouts again – aren’t they always?!
UNIVERSITY BLUES finished the 2023 home & away season in 2nd position, before a narrow loss to Collegians followed by a disappointing performance against St Kevin’s saw them bundled out in straight sets.
Coach Guy MARTYN and his recruiting team had a fruitful summer, securing a handful of big-name signings, including ex-Essendon swingman James STEWART & former Port Adelaide big man Sam HAYES, who both have the potential to wreak havoc in Premier Men’s this season.
Former VFL player Matthew SMITH arrives after finishing 2nd in Heidelberg’s best-and-fairest, while Jamie LLOYD & Archie SINNOTT both have elite junior experience.
Reigning League best & fairest Marty GLEESON returns as the Blues eye off their first top-tier flag since 2019.
OLD SCOTCH finished the 2023 home & away season in 3rd position, then fell 3 goals short of St Kevin’s in the Semi Final.
The Cardinals have some useful additions in 2024, including seasoned ready-made performers Lachie JOHNSON & Isaac CONWAY, along with talented Leongatha youngster Harry SCOTT, who has spent the past two seasons with Gippsland Power and has signed with Richmond’s VFL team.
Former OLD BRIGHTON captain & premiership player Marcel BRUIN has stepped up from Senior Assistant to Head Coach in 2024, while the club’s longestserving coach Greg HUTCHISON has returned as Director of Coaching as they strive to return to the finals after one year watching on from the sidelines.

Team Lists
The Tonners went 9-and-9 to finish 2023 in 5th position and will be looking for some youngsters to step up and provide additional depth, which was sorely tested as they used 39 players last season.
OLD XAVERIANS finished 6 th in 2023 – their lowest finish since 2018 – and club champion Daniel DONATI returns as Senior Coach in 2024, having been a premiership player in 1996 and served as Senior Assistant Coach from 2018-21.
He has assembled a stellar coaching panel that includes Jeff GOBBELS, Pat HAWKINS, former AFL star Dan HANNEBERY and Louis TIERNAN to fast-track their young talent.
Xavs have secured the prime signature of 2023 Sandover Medalist Sam FISHER, who starred in his debut WAFL season after an impressive journey from Canberra via the GWS Academy, time on Sydney’s AFL list, then the Blues at VFL level (including the 2019 VFL Team of the Year).
UNIVERSITY BLACKS stumbled out of the gate in 2023, losing their first 4 games before finding some rhythm mid-season to win 6 of their last 9 (including a 4-game winning streak containing a victory over eventual Grand Finalist St Kevin’s OB).
Their rollercoaster ride saw them finish 7th with an 8-and-10 record, but that back-end of the year showed that their best football is good enough to press even the best teams. Their challenge now is to find consistency to go with those flashes of brilliance.
OLD MELBURNIANS will be keen to get away to a stronger start in 2024, after a 5-game losing streak to open 2023 had them chasing their tails all season. They recovered from that initial onslaught to string 4 straight wins together and stabilise their campaign, before falling away again in the back half of the season.
Fortunately, they managed to narrowly avoid relegation on percentage after a dominant final-round win over Caulfield Grammarians and have recruited strongly as they look to rise up out of the danger zone.
Former AFL-listed players Jarrod LIENERT & Jack PERIS are joined by Carlton VFL skipper Lachie SWANEY and big-bodied Collingwood VFL midfielder Ned LONG, who turned heads with his eye-catching performance for the VFL in the State game versus the SANFL last weekend.
Throw in ready-made players James HARROLD & Sam WUNDUKE and the Redlegs look a stronger combination in 2024 – particularly when those VFL players are available for VAFA duty.
ST BERNARDS are back in Premier Men’s after a oneyear absence which delivered a perfect 20-and-0 Premier B season and premiership flag.
Now they get to test themselves at the highest level once again and coach Steve ALESSIO will be delighted to have signed experienced AFL midfielder Jackson HATELY, who will also line up with Essendon’s VFL team.
It’s always a challenge for promoted teams to step back up to the top level, but the Snowdogs proved themselves to be a worthy Premier Men’s starter with their sustained excellence throughout 2023.
FITZROY have risen to the top grade for the first time in club history and have a new coach at the helm for this exciting new chapter, with Travis RONALDSON returning to Melbourne after five years with the NRL’s Canberra Raiders in their Strength & Conditioning department.
Ronaldson boasts an impressive footballing CV, which includes a podium finish in the VFL’s Liston Trophy and Team of the Year honours while playing for Coburg, before coaching Old Ivanhoe to a Premier C flag in 2013.
So we can expect the Roys to be in peak physical condition and they’ve retained the bulk of their playing group as they look to build on their 2nd placed finish in Premier B last season. They enter 2024 with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude as they look to make their mark at the pinnacle of VAFA footy.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
Who will challenge the Premiership trifecta of St Kevin’s in 2024?
As the anticipation builds and the countdown begins, the 2024 William Buck Premier Women’s Competition promises another thrilling chapter in the illustrious history of VAFA football. With the commencement of the season imminent, fans are eager to witness the intense battles, dazzling displays of skill, and the quest for ultimate glory.
Caulfield Grammarians
The Caulfield Grammarians are battlers and embody the VAFA spirit, playing week to week For the Love of the Game. They finished the 2023 season in the middle of the table Caulfield have retained the likes of Matilda Mottram who polled well in the league’s B&F last season, and Chloe O’Malley who is a sharpshooter in front of goals.
Caulfield kick off the season hosting Coburg FC, a side they are yet to defeat, and will be hungry to do so to get their first win of the board for 2024.
Coburg
This is Coburg’s second season in the VAFA. Having sussed out the competition in 2023, they will have a better feel for their match ups and will be looking to assert their presence in the VAFA with a memorable 2024 program.
Led by co-captains Claire Cashman and Amy Duguid the Lions are a tight-knit group who have each other’s back on and off the field. Look out for them to open their 2024 campaign with a bang when they take on the likes of the Caulfield Grammarians.
Collegians
Collegians have put together one of the most comprehensive preseason campaigns, tackling everything from on field performance, teamwork, mindset, and a focus on community.
Dom Lucarelli is in the driver’s seat for the women’s side and will be looking to take them to finals again. They came unstuck in the semi-final against a formidable Old Scotch outfit. The purple and gold will take on MUWFC at home this Saturday in Round 1.
Kew
Ahh the Kew Bears! They are the epitome of hard work and determination, leading the competition at every turn in 2023 and falling short to the likes of the St Kevin’s Saints in the grand final. With only two losses on the board last season, they will hope to retain their stella form in 2024 under the guidance of new coach Emily Avery.
Hungry for victory, with skipper Rachael McDonough at the helm, Kew face off against Monash Blues at home in Round 1.
Melbourne University Women’s
MUWFC did not have the 2023 season they would’ve been hoping for, finishing 8 th on the ladder. Although their abilities were not reflected on the ladder, they are not to be underestimated. Emma Delaney is the captain of the squad, leading the charge alongside coach Colleen Gwynne.
They have a tough match up in Round 1 playing away against Collegians; a side they were not able to overcome last season.

Monash Blues
The Monash Blues are a true success story of VAFA Women’s football. After taking home the premiership in Premier B Women’s last season, they have been elevated to the highest level to face new opponents in 2024.
The depth of their line-up includes goal kicking machine Molly McFarlane, and 2023 best and fairest winner Ainslee Elliott.
How will they fair in William Buck Premier Women’s? The wait is over and we are about to find out with no tougher start to the season than 2023 ladder leaders and grand finalists, Kew FC.
Old Scotch
The Scotch Stars had arguably one of the most impressive seasons of Women’s football in the William Buck Premier Women’s competition in 2023, having just been promoted to the top grade and finishing 3 rd on a competitive ladder and making it all the way to the preliminary final.
There is a whole lot of talent down at Old Scotch which will once again be harnessed and guided through the expertise of coach Dean Anderson.
Lucy Morley was the leading goal kicker runner up, while Mia Caffry polled well in the sections Best & Fairest.
Old Yarra Cobras
The Old Yarra Cobras are the other newcomers to the Premier Women’s competition. The team delivered a strong season being a newly amalgamated club in 2023, finishing 2nd on the ladder, missing out on the premiership by just 2 points in the grand final.
Michael Wines is coaching the Cobras whilst the team welcomes a number of impressive VFLW players to their side. They will be looking to make their mark right out of the gates, facing Old Scotch in Round 1.
St Kevin’s
The reigning champions, St Kevin’s, enter the season with an air of confidence after securing three consecutive premierships. Led by their seasoned coach Tom Purcell and bolstered by a roster brimming with talent, the St Kevin’s outfit aims to etch their name further into VAFA folklore by clinching an unprecedented fourth consecutive title.
With a blend of experience and youthful exuberance, they remain the team to beat, and their rivals will undoubtedly be plotting strategies to dethrone the reigning monarchs.
West Brunswick
West Brunswick have tasted success in the Women’s Thirds competition and are hungry to replicate such triumph against the best of the best in the William Buck Premier Women’s competition.
They put together a commendable 2023 and will be looking to draw strength from their cohesion as a playing group to go even further this season under the leadership of coach Marnee Silver.
With the stage set and anticipation reaching fever pitch, the 2024 William Buck Premier Women’s Competition promises to deliver a spectacle of footballing excellence. From the opening bounce to the fisnal siren, fans can expect thrills, spills, and moments of pure sporting magic as the battle for supremacy unfolds on the hallowed turf of VAFA grounds. As the journey begins, only one question remains: Who will rise to the occasion and etch their name in the annals of VAFA history?

Saturdays will be all the better for the return of amateur football, as the VAFA senior men’s and women’s competitions kick into gear this weekend.
In the Premier B Men’s competition, the eye is drawn to a clash rematch between promoted pair Old Camberwell and Old Ivanhoe, booked to re-acquaint themselves at Chelsworth Park after last year’s Premier C Grand Final.
Old Ivanhoe senior coach Jarrod Gieschen will unveil a fabulous addition in Toby McLean; a boom recruit for the club. A heart-and-soul half-forward, McLean played 102 AFL games for the Western Bulldogs, where he was a prominent feature in the club’s drought-breaking 2016 premiership. “He’s been fantastic and brought some fresh ideas and just shown the boys what it’s like to train at that higher level” said Gieschen on Wednesday night.
Gieschen says his side is primed for the move up to Premier B, having retained most of the list. As far as opening games go, a clash with Old Camberwell, who Old Ivanhoe defeated by 42 points in the 2023 Premier C Grand Final, is the perfect litmus test. “They were the dominant team last year, we probably found form at the right time,” said Gieschen. “They’ve gone from Division 1 to Premier C to Premier B, and you don’t do that three years in a row unless you’ve got some high-quality players.”
There’s another finals replay in Round 1 for Prem B for De La Salle and Beaumaris ; their last meeting ended in five-point Sharks win in the 2023 Premier B semifinal. They’ll take to Waverley Oval this weekend, reigniting a rivalry between the two clubs that developed nicely last year.
“We’re looking forward to getting stuck back into a rivalry which we’ve had with Beaumaris recently,” said De La Salle senior coach Nick Hyland on Wednesday afternoon. “We played them three times last year, including the semifinal, and each result was decided by ten points or under. We’ve had some good battles, no doubt it’ll be the same this week.”
It’s been a rewarding off-season for De La Salle, with school footy skipper Luke Lloyd selected by Brisbane at pick #42 in November’s AFL National Draft, partly thanks to a 19-goal performance for the school team last May. The club were ecstatic for Lloyd and he’s a great player.
Former St Kilda midfielder Leo Connolly signed with De La Salle following his delisting last year but expect him to feature more prominently for the Casey Demons in the VFL.
“Having players picking his brain is really valuable for our young group. It’s that youthful brigade, Hyland forecasts, that will see De La advance in season 2024. Our progression will be largely based on the development of those younger guys that have already had senior experience over the last 12 to 24 months,” he said.
For Beaumaris, it’s a look at a fresher side, one senior coach Josh Bourke is embracing. “It’s been a real transition for us - we’ve had a few outs and a few move on to different opportunities”. Bourke’s list of exciting talent includes the likes of Tom O’Rourke,

PREMIER B MEN’S
Charlie Wilson and Spencer McLennan - home-grown talented youngsters who have impressed on the track and are looking to become consistent senior footballers - while Jai Florent, the brother of Sydney’s Ollie, is one of four Beaumaris recruits to have transferred from Bonbeach.
Senior assistant Stephen Milne is one of many “quality coaches” around the football club, Bourke lauding Beaumaris for its investment and focus on establishing a strong coaching group at all levels.
Bourke shed light on Milne’s increased role with the Sharks’ training regime over the pre-season. “This pre-season, Milney’s taken a bit more of a role with the whole group, he’s had a bit more of an overall influence and some more taking (control) of training,” Bourke said.
Old Haileybury, having dropped down to Premier B this season following a six-win 2023 season in William Buck Premier football, are expected by most to be right in the mix for the premiership and will take on Old Trinity to start its season.
Haileybury’s forwards will be under the tutelage of Hawthorn star Luke Bruest this year, the three-time premiership player offering his services as assistant coach when able. Trinity’s squad has been bolstered by the additions of ex-AFL listed pair Matthew Goodyear and Hugh Beasley, while Sam Mason and Hugo McGlashan have returned from VFL duties at Coburg to pull on the green and gold.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, now under the tutelage of new coach Brad Berry, will host the relegated Caulfield Grammarians at Brindisi St Oval, hoping to improve on an eleven-win 2023 campaign that saw SBMT finish sixth on the Premier B ladderpercentage out of fourth spot and a finals berth.
Expect Berry, a premiership player for the club he now coaches, to favour an approach focused heavily on club culture and player development. “There might be some hard yards to do,” Berry told the Herald Sun in November, “but if we can paint a clear picture of the end of the tunnel, we will go a long way to creating a culture of people wanting to be there.”
Finally, Old Geelong will look to further affirm its place in Premier B this season, beginning with a visit to Fearon Reserve and Williamstown CYMS. Old Geelong won both its outings against the CY’s last season, but like St Bede’s Mentone and Beaumaris, missed out on finals football by percentage alone. Williamstown, fresh off celebrating club stalwart Matthew Carland’s 200th game for the club last weekend, finished seventh on the Premier B ladder last season.

Raj Johnston previews the 2024 Premier C Men’s season. This 10-team section welcomes AJAX and Monash Blues down from Premier B, with Glen Eira/Old McKinnon and Oakleigh promoted from Division 1.
AJAX
After a difficult 2023, Ajax has been relegated from Premier B. Led by new coach Wayne Oswald, Ajax will start their season on the road against Marcellin. Their leadership group consisting of Nick Lewis, Kane Nissenbaum and Corey Zielinski will be looking to lead a competitive side in 2024 that will challenge oppositions.
GLEN EIRA/OLD MCKINNON
Debuting their new club name, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon Gryphons, this is a club on the rise, promoted to Premier C after winning last years Division 1 Grand Final against Oakleigh. Jon Edgar’s side will be looking to cement their place as a Premier Division club and be competitive with teams on a consistent basis. The Gryphons have picked up two more players from Wagga – Rhett Weidemann and Darcy Irvine. Keep an eye on Joel Ludik who had an impressive pre-season.
HAMPTON ROVERS
Narrowly missing finals in 2023, the Rovers will be looking to crack the top four in 2024. The club has had a heavy focus on graduating players out of their successful Under 19 program and captain Christian Carnovale is a strong player with ball in hand. The challenge has been set from new senior coach Marty Pask that the Rovers need to be a team that will compete. The Rovers will call Sandringham’s Trevor Barker Oval home this season due to the pavilion redevelopment at Boss James Reserve.
MARCELLIN
Club legend Bernie Dinneen has headed back to where it all started, taking on the job of senior coach at Marcellin this season. The Eagles have had a good pre-season with the new coach identifying good foundations and well established practices amongst his players. Adam Tomaro has previously been unlucky with injury but is looking fit and promising. Youngster Daniel Shepherd is training well and defender Isaac Barry is a player to keep an eye on, playing in the NAB League and training with Carlton’s VFL side.
MAZENOD
Despite finishing sixth last season, Mazenod were only a few wins out of the top four and will be looking to challenge for a finals place in 2024. Peter Banfield’s men will be on the road for the first three games of the season before returning to Central Reserve in Round 4 for three consecutive home games.
MONASH BLUES
Monash Blues return to Premier C after one season in Premier B. They were dominant in Premier C in 2022, claiming the flag, so will no doubt expect to be working hard and producing good results this season. Four of their first six matches are on their home ground at Frearson Oval and coach Dylan Cousins will be looking for a strong start to the season.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 16
OAKLEIGH
Oakleigh have been promoted from Division 1 after going down in the Grand Final last year and will be looking to make an impact in Premier C. The club has gained the services of Sean Roach, Madison Talarico & James McLaughlin, bolstering their big man stocks which was a major requirement. Luke Ashen is coming off a League Best & Fairest and should have another strong season. After eight years out of Premier C, coach James Francis is excited for the challenge ahead.
OLD CAREY
After playing seventeen Under 19 players in 2023, Old Carey, led by coach Aaron Bailey, is expected to continue to blood players from last year’s Division 2 Under 19 Premiers and Year 12 graduates, with many young players expected to feature early in 2024. The club has been busy over the summer with a number of new signings. Trent Warren arrives at the club after three years in the VFL with Box Hill and Coburg.
PARKDALE VULTURES
New recruit Mitch Brown should make a significant impact this season whether forward or back, while brothers Kai and Joel Day recruited from Bonbeach have settled in well. Keep an eye out for Matt Emmanouel in the midfield, Cooper Howell down back, Ryan McDermaid in the forward line, and Jarrod Peake in the ruck and forward line. Coach Owen Lalor is pleased with the development of his young list as the Vultures expect to be a top four team this season.
PEGS
After their loss in the finals last year, Andrew Beever’s side said they needed to get better and they believe they have. Tom Cartwright is coming back from a knee injury and PEGS are hoping to see some exciting footy from him in the back half of the year. Mike Sharp has come across from the UK where he played and coached in the AFL London competition and has adjusted brilliantly with their backs. PEGS will be looking to replicate their strong form from 2023 into the new season.

Division 1 Men’s Season Preview
With just one more sleep until football returns to the big stage, our Division 1 Men’s teams are getting out the boots, pumping up the footies and laying out the guernseys ready for the first bounce of the 2024 season.
Kew
Kew had a solid season in 2023 but left much to the imagination when it came to achieving September success. They wrapped up the season in the middle of the table and have no doubt been gearing up to hit the ground running and improve on their standing this season.
The brown and gold are coached by Brian Cole. Their season kicks off with a home game at Victoria Park where they’ll host the Preston Bullants.
Old Peninsula
The Pirates of the Peninsula have been putting in the hard yards in the off season. With a new President in the chair, Alex Wood a stalwart of the club, they are primed to deliver some cracking footy in 2024.
Old Peninsula travel to face the Old Yarra Cobras in Round 1 at Koonung Reserve.
Old Yarra Cobras
The Old Yarra Cobras found success in 2023 making it to the grand final and being promoted up to Division 1 this season. Falling just shy of winning the flag by a mere 3-points, the Cobras are hungry for more and will be looking to climb their way to the top in a new competition, against some formidable opponents.
Ormond
Ormond had a lackluster season last year, which unfortunately has seen the club be relegated from Premier football to Divisional football for the first time in a long while. They will be determined to bounce right back up to Premier C but will have to get through some stiff competition to do so.
Skipper Benjamin Hardwick is a 100-game player for Ormond and will know what it takes to achieve team success. Hungry for victory they are a force to be reckoned with and will host Prahran FC to kickstart their season.
Parkside
Parkside are the newcomers to Division 1 and boy they must be pretty chuffed to be there! They have achieved the double elevation, progressing from Div 3 in 2022, to Div 2 in 2023 and find themselves promoted again for the 2024 season after winning the premiership in both Seniors and Reserves.
The Devils will test the waters in a new competition taking on UHS-VU this Saturday, under the leadership of coach Rick Frost.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 26 DIVISION 1 MEN’S Access Team Lists on PlayHQ via VAFA.com.au
Prahran
Prahran FC put together a strong 2023 season and had a short finals appearance, bowing out in the semi-final. New senior Coach Craige Milward said he is looking to tap into the versatility of his side. We have seen that trying players in new positions can breed untapped potential, a secret weapon that Prahran may utilise this season. Prahran have retained weapons like best and fairest winner Rory Brodie who will be looking to do damage on the field this season.
They travel this round to face off against a new opponent in Ormond.
Preston Bullants
The Bullants are looking red hot heading into this season and have to hit the ground running should they wish to be playing finals footy come September time. Preston managed three wins for the season last year but have retained a quality outfit who will be working on their craft to improve on the scoreboard.
The Bullants are playing away for the opening two rounds and will need their leaders to step up should they wish to secure some early wins.
Therry Penola
Brendan Payne’s squad had a solid season in 2023. Whilst they were plagued by inconsistency, they have proven that they can beat top sides. If Therry can stick to their brand of football and show up with a roar on match days, then I’d expect a good contest.
The Lions have four debutants in Round 1, and they will be going up against West Brunswick.
UHS-VU
UHS-VU were preliminary finalists in 2023 and their ascendency in the competition is not to be discounted. They were just a couple of kicks away from being promoted and will no doubt be chasing victory this season.
Paul Rocke and his side start the season off in a tough match up, as they play host to the newly elevated Parkside, and opponent they won’t be too familiar with. This match up should be a good indication of where everyone stands in Division 1 and perhaps an insight as to what is to come this season.
West Brunswick
West Brunswick are a heart and soul club and that is exactly the attitude they bring when they take to the field. The Westies have featured in Division 1 for a couple of years now and would be getting used to their opponents’ playing styles.
They have been counting down the days until that first bounce and wait no longer as they take on the Therry Penola Lions at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve.
Grab the popcorn and get those team colours on because this season is bound to be a ripper! All the action kicks off tomorrow with Round 1 in Division 1. Where will the chips fall and who will soar to the top? Stay tuned…

Division 2 Men’s Season Preview
As we gear up for the 2024 season in VAFA Division 2 Men’s, we say farewell to Grand Finalists Parkside (Premiers) and Old Yarra Cobras who have been promoted to Division 1, and wave goodbye to Old Paradians who’ve departed the competition.
Due to changes in the divisional competition structure, the bottom two from last season (St Mary’s Salesian and Aquinas) live to fight another day and will be hoping to rise up the ladder this season.
Last years Division 3 Grand Finalists Hawthorn and Elsternwick make the jump to Division 2, as does Wattle Park due to changes in the structure.
Let’s take a look at the teams who’ll battle it out in Division 2 this year.
AQUINAS
The Bloods had a disappointing season in 2023, collecting just the two wins and finishing at the bottom of the table. Due to other circumstances they remain in the division for another year and will be looking to be more competitive this time around. A host of recruits and re-committed players should help their cause under coach Craig Glennie, and first up they face Wattle Park on their home deck.
BRUNSWICK
The NOBS will no doubt be disappointed at going out in straight sets last year. The Brunswick boys had a magnificent home & away season, finishing second on the ladder with 13 wins. However, the double chance didn’t work in their favour, going down to Old Yarra in the Prelim. The NOBS should be strong again this season and a definite contender for top honours.
BULLEEN TEMPLESTOWE
A disappointing 2023 finishing eight for the Bullants, and they’ll be looking to improve on that this year, with some talented under 19s coming up through the ranks.
ELSTERNWICK
The Wickers had a dominant 2023 season in Division 3, dropping just the two games and running out Premiers by 67 points over Hawthorn. Can they do it again? Time will tell as they come up against new competition this season, and a few departures may make the challenge a little harder than it was last year.
HAWTHORN
It was a disappointing Grand Final result for Hawthorn, but they’ll be looking to consolidate their spot in Division 2 this season.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 28 DIVISION 2 MEN’S Access Team Lists on PlayHQ via VAFA.com.au
MHSOB
A mid-table finish for Melbourne High School last year and the boys from South Yarra will be keen to improve their win-loss record under coach Bernie Pretty. A team that has remained in the section for about a decade, the Unicorns start their 2024 campaign away to Hawthorn.
SOUTH MELBOURNE
South Melbourne Districts had a solid season, finishing fourth and suffered a narrow defeat in their semi final. Another team who’s good on their home deck at Albert Park, they’ll be pushing for finals action again in 2024. The Swans travel to face Bulleen Templestowe in round one.
ST MARY’S SALESIAN
The Saints collected just the four wins last year in what was a disappointing season for the club. A host of recommitted players and new recruits should see them on the up. They will be tested first up however, on the road to face Whitefriars.
WATTLE PARK
The Animals have come up from Division 3 despite finishing fourth and going down in the first semi final to Canterbury. This year could be tough, however the club is up and about with the Marmalade crew bringing a heap of attention as they ply their trade in the club’s Thirds team. Let’s hope some of that excitement leads to victories on the park for the seniors.
WHITEFRIARS
The ‘Friars just missed out on finals footy last season, equal on points with fourth-placed South Melbourne but an inferior percentage of 5%. They’re always hard to beat at home and that will no doubt be the case again this season, which should hold them in good stead for a tilt at finals this time around.

Unchartered territory in the newly amalgamated Division 3
The excitement has been building and the stage is set as 11 teams prepare to take to the field in a new-look Division 3 Men’s competition. With no Division 4 in 2024, several teams have been elevated to Division 3 where they look to face a host of new opponents in what looks to be a competitive competition. All vying for a spot in the illustrious top 5 on the ladder in order to secure a ticket to finals come September.
With many inaugural head-to-head clashes, there are sure to be underdog stories of triumph. Who will climb their way to the top?
Albert Park
Albert Park came close to victory last season and are looking to retain that momentum as they test out the competition on Division 3. With the 2024 leading goalkicker on their side, watch the Falcons fly in front of the big sticks. They are set to host old rival, Box Hill North in the season opener.
Box Hill North
With a number of new recruits bolstering their line-up, Box Hill North will be looking to make their mark in a new Division for this season. The Demons dominated the competition in 2023 but fell short to eventual premiers in finals. The question on everyone’s lips, can the Demons bring the same ascendency to Division 3 coming up against new competition.
Canterbury
The 2023 Division 3 preliminary finalists will be looking to do one better this season and go all the way to the big dance. With club stalwart Josh Ward at the helm, can the Cobras be coached to victory?
Canterbury head to Ross Gregory Oval to face Power House in Round 1.
Chadstone
Chadstone FC return to senior football following an extended stint in the Men’s Thirds competition. Captain Anthony Brown holds the reigns again, whilst Senior Coach Luke Nally steps in for his first year at the helm. They head to St James Park to take on Swinburne University out of the gates.
Eley Park
Eley Park have been dealt the opening bye round. The Sharks will continue to circle until they take to the park in Round 2, hosting Albert Park. A side that struggled to convert in 2023, Eley Park will be looking to prove themselves on the scoreboard this season; never underestimate the underdog.
La Trobe University
In our first inaugural match up in the newly amalgamated Division 3, La Trobe travel to face St John’s OC this round, testing out the new competition. La Trobe University have been doing a host of work in the off-season with a focus on player wellbeing. This unified, mentally tough, and hard tackling outfit are not to be messed with.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 32 DIVISION 3 MEN’S Access Team Lists on PlayHQ via VAFA.com.au
North Brunswick
Dual Premiers in 2023, the North Brunswick Bulls dominated the competition in both Seniors and Reserves. Will they bring the same intensity and finesse to a new competition? The Bulls have bragging rights at home to kick off their season, as they welcome Richmond Central to Allard Park. We can’t forget goalkicking aficionado Andrew Ramzy, just one of the many weapons in the Bulls’ toolbox.
Power House
Power House are entering the season with a new-look committee, strong player numbers and are a force to be reckon with. They will be looking to tilt their winloss ratio in their favour in 2024 and be competitive against the new competition. With the Grand Prix done and dusted, they reclaim their home at Albert Park and host the Canterbury Cobras on the weekend.
Richmond Central
Michael Motta is pulling on the yellow and black this season as Senior Men’s Coach of Richmond Central. Landing in the middle of the ladder after 18 rounds in 2023, Richmond Central will be looking to get some wins on the park early to secure a top spot. The Snakes’ own Lochie Conboy was runner up in the league’s Best and Fairest last year, exemplifying the talent of a strong outfit.
St John’s OC
The JOCS have a senior side that comprises the returning club faithful, as well as some new names. There’s no bigger name from Division 4 2023 than Corey Ely, who blew away the competition taking out the B&F by no less than 12 votes ahead of the runner up. St John’s are gearing up for a big season in the green, gold, and black, as they face La Trobe University in the opener.
Swinburne University
The Swinburne Razorbacks are looking to turn the table in 2024, fielding three sides, and are looking strong as a club. Their Division 3 seniors will come up against a host of new teams entering the section which should breed a new competitive spirit. Swinburne University open their 2024 campaign against Chadstone FC.

Under 19’s over the Round 1 hurdle
The Holmesglen Under 19’s competition officially opened the VAFA 2024 season, a week ahead of all Senior Men’s and Women’s competitions. The spotlight on the up and commers in the VAFA showcased a display of youthful exuberance and raw talent. Saturday’s match ups in the Premier Under 19’s served up a smorgasbord of footballing drama with reigning premiers Old Xaverians going down to rival St Kevin’s OB, and the newly promoted Beaumaris dominating the opposition, leaving fans eager for more.
At Waverley Oval, De La Salle themselves in a rather precarious position against Beaumaris. With a score-line that looked more like a misprint than reality (22 to 80), De La Salle’s valiant efforts were overshadowed by Beaumaris’ relentless onslaught.
It seemed the Beaumaris boys had breakfasted on goals and came hungry for more, leaving De La Salle dazed and confused. Jhett Haeata and Angus Marcombe kicked 2 majors each for Beaumaris, whilst Mack Higginbotham was the soul multiple goal kicker for De La. The Sharks feasted in their debut in the Holmesglen Premier U19 section, proving themselves to be quite the competitors and a force to be reckon with.
Meanwhile, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers faced off against Old Brighton in what promised to be a clash of the Bayside titans. However, it was Old Brighton who emerged victorious, triumphing with a 50-point margin. Archer May stole the show with 8 goals and was arguably best afield for his side. Their performance left spectators wanting more taking down semifinalists from 2023.
Jack Behnk slotted two majors for SBMT while Harvey Gleeson featured in the best. This early in the season, teams are finding their feet and with a little more match day exposure, no doubt St Bedes/Mentone will be back on the winners list.
The fans didn’t have to wait long for a grand final rematch. TH King Oval witnessed a showdown between St Kevin’s and Old Xaverians. The St Kevin’s boys were strong out of the gates and Xavs just couldn’t catch them. Skipper Geroge Delimitrou led the charge for his side with a goal and a spot in the best afield, while at the other end, Connor Spears took charge in front of goals for Xavs with three 6-pointers for the afternoon.
St Kevin’s walked away with the chocolate due to their slick passes and precision shots. Xavs will need to regroup from here and find their premiership winning form should they hope to go back-to-back.
In one of the closer games of the round, University Blues squared off against Caulfield Grammarians in a battle of wits and wills. It was a contest where strategy met stamina, and Caulfield Grammarians emerged victorious with a 26-point lead.
Starting on the back footy Caulfield went into the first break with only four minor scores and an uphill mountain to climb. The fought their way back into the contest through the like of Jared Freedman and Dylan Ting. Despite leading at every change, the efforts of the Uni Blues boys weren’t enough to hold off the 7-goal onslaught that Caulfield produced in the final term, sealing their Round 1 victory.
Last but certainly not least, Fearon Reserve witnessed a clash between Williamstown CYMS and Old Scotch. In a match that had the crowd on the edge of their seats, Williamstown edged out their opponents by a mere 7 points. It was a victory that tasted sweeter than victory itself, leaving Old Scotch to lick their wounds and ponder what could have been.
In a low scoring affair with multiple lead changes, it was Liam Taylor’s two final quarter goals that sealed it for Williamstown. Captain Xavier Snelling should be proud of his team for their first-round win against a formidable opponent and was best on for his side. Old Scotch faithful, Mackenzie Allen was best on ground for the Cardinals.
As the dust settles on Round 1 of the Holmesglen Under 19’s Men’s Premier competition, one thing is abundantly clear: this season promises to be a rollercoaster ride of thrills, spills, and jaw-dropping moments. With each team hungry for glory and determined to leave their mark on the field, fans can rest assured that the best is yet to come. So, buckle up football aficionados, because the battle of the youth has only just begun!
Round two sees things kick off under light on Friday night with SBMT hosting Williamstown CYMS. St Kevin’s will travel to Brighton Beach Oval to get Saturday footy under way against Old Brighton, whilst Beaumaris will be taking on Caulfield Grammarians not to far away at Banksia Reserve. The Old Xaverians will be looking to redeem their round one performance with a win over the University Blues and rounding out the Holmesglen Under 19’s Premier competition this weekend will be Old Scotch facing off against De La Salle.

Will Ponsford (Old Yarra Cobras)
100
250
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
A massive congratulations to Will Ponsford on 100 games! Ponnie is a leader on and off the field having captained the reserves in 2017, 2018 and 2021 whilst also taking out the best and fairest in 2021. He’s a Cobra through and through, having dominated the forward line in his 99th game, booting a massive 7 goals. We can’t wait to see another big game for the hundredth at Koonung on Saturday.
Lachlan Upstill (Ormond AFC)
Lachlan Upstill is preparing to play his 250th Ormond AFC Senior Game against Prahran in Round 1. Lachlan has played all his football at Ormond starting with the Under 9s in the Junior Club (OJFC) before progressing to the Under 19s with the Senior Club in 2005. In his first year in 2005 with the Under 19s he was a wingman in the Under 19 premiership side and was named Ormond›s third best player in that victory. Two more Premierships followed for Lachlan in 200708 when he was a member of the winning Reserves sides. A further two Reserves Premierships came in 2015 and 2017. The ultimate recognition came for Lachlan in 2022 when he joined his brother, Boyd, as an OAFC Life Member.
