PRELIMINARY FINALS A TENSE, ROLLICKING FOOTBALL AFFAIR What are the biggest games of VAFA football for the year? The Premier Grand Final followed by the Premier B Preliminary Final would be my top two, and this year maybe the Old Scotch relegation game would rank three. For each section it may be the preliminary finals and the last chance to gain promotion. Promotion and relegation really is the lifeblood of the competition and the preliminary finals are always tense. For six of the seven senior sections the Grand Finals are the icing on the cake and played for the enjoyment of the game. Six Divisional Preliminary Finals were held last week. In Division 1 Ormond responded from their second semi-final loss and came from behind to defeat Old Geelong and return to Premier C. Old Paradians followed up their first semi win defeating St John’s to earn their promotion. Divisions 3 and 4 had two preliminary finals and they were cut throat. Emmaus St Leos went through the year undefeated and won their semi but still had to face up to a preliminary final date. After losing last year by a point to Northern Blues, they would have had an anxious week leading up to the game. However, they blew away Aquinas, winning by just under a hundred points. They will be able to enjoy their Grand Final as they take on West Brunswick who will join them in Division 2. On the other hand, Canterbury, after a spectacular home and away season losing only their final match, lost their semi but got the double chance. They were too good for Box Hill Nth winning by 48 points. Parkside re-entered the VAFA this year and have made an immediate impact by gaining promotion. They have had two convincing finals wins and will be looking forward to meeting Canterbury in the Grand Final at Garvey Oval. I know there are some negatives about our structure of the final six but preliminary finals in the VAFA are the most exciting games and this system allows for two. Finals are a different beast, the pressure rises

and in the preliminary finals the rewards for the winners are so much greater than the loser. This weekend another two more teams will earn promotion. Marcellin has competed in each finals series since being relegated from Premier B in 2011. They should take inspiration from the victory of St Kevin’s last weekend when they take on Old Haileybury in Premier C. St Kevin’s had lost their past ten finals in Premier B but saluted in a high quality match at Sportscover Arena against St Bede’s Mentone Tigers. The Tigers get their second chance as they battle Old Melburnians who have played in the last four Premier B finals series. In William Buck Premier, there are no promotions so the premiership is what everyone is after. Old Trinity commenced in 1954 and have never played in a Premier section grand final. At three quarter time there seemed only a slim chance, as they were down by 37 points, having only kicked two goals, three behinds. How things can change. They kicked six goals four to one point in the final term to win by seven points. They have become a resilient team winning 18 of 19 second halves this year. They won’t lie down. St Bernard’s face a hot University Blues who have won the last seven. The vote count of the Premier B to Division 4 was conducted on 96.5INRFM on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Congratulations to the winners and in particular Paul Baranello from Emmaus St Leos on winning his third competition best and Fairest and Dean Calcedo from Northern Blues on following up his win in 2010 in the Under 18 competition with a tie in Division 2. The Woodrow Medal for the best and fairest in the William Buck Premier Section will be held at Crown this Wednesday. Make sure you get to the William Buck Premier Grand Final next Sunday which will be held for the first time at IKON Park Carlton. With the Premier B and C Grand Finals on Saturday it guarantees an exciting climax to the season.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER

Andrew Leonard

GREAT EXPECTATIONS Congratulations to Old Trinity who have made their first ever Premier Grand Final. We have come to expect a few things in William Buck Premier in 2015. Old Trinity storming home is one. If you haven’t hung out the back of the Old Trinity huddle at three quarter time when they are facing a deficit – you might have one more chance this year – witnessing the belief and energy amongst the group would galvanise even the most pessimistic supporter. They did it again last Sunday in their come from behind win against St Bernards. St Bernard’s had a truckload of chances, probably should have won but in the end they lost their third straight final of the Anthony Rock era. At Sportscover Arena, Uni Blues ended the De La Salle fairytale run by 22 points. Outmuscled at the contest and out gunned both in attack and defence by Jack Watts, De La suffered their first loss since May, but lost few admirers in the process. De La Salle never gave in, however the extra cog the Blues midfield had was telling and the previously mentioned Watts took the game away from De La Salle in the third quarter with four goals. Watts then prevented multiple De La attacks from ending up in goals in the final quarter too. The wind was a factor in both semi-finals, so we can put a line through the fact that it is only ever windy at Sportscover Arena. At quarter-time at Highgate, St Bernards had managed just 0.6 having had first use of the breeze. As the siren sounded Old Trinity players didn’t mask their delight at holding the Snowdogs goalless. The chances for St Bernards were not all guilt edged, but nevertheless, some of them should have been kicked. There was nothing in it at half time, as St Bernards kicked a vital goal into the breeze to trail by a point at the main break. It would be the only goal kicked to that end as Old Trinity was kept scoreless in the third quarter. Shaun Clarke was dominating the ruck contests and Tom Sullivan’s purple patch continued. Finally the 2

@ Lennytalk

forward entries for St Bernards were converted, although a return of 4.9 was still wasteful. Old Trinity, crucially kicked early goals in the last quarter as the Howells, Hunts and Gabe Hamilton ran and carried like there was no tomorrow. Harry Tinney moved forward and provided an option and with less than ten minutes to go Old Trinity’s final wave came. What could St Bernard’s have done? Put 18 men behind the ball? We will never know, but Old Trinity’s ability to haul in a deficit is breathtaking. St Bernard’s will rightly be shattered. Their last two finals have netted scores of 5.18 and 5.22. Wind has played a part, but the opposition was not as wasteful on both occasions. It was highlighted early in the year, but St Bernard’s might want to call on former favourite son, Matthew Lloyd to ensure they are on target this week. At Sportscover Arena, goals were easier to find, and luckily both sides didn’t waste their chances. So often wind affected finals at Sportscover, are decided by one side missing out on their use of the prevailing breeze. This wasn’t the case. Blues jumped out, De La Salle responded to be within range at half time. Crucially though, De La Salle seemed to change tack late in the second quarter. Down a man with David Lowe off after a report, De La spent five minutes chipping the ball around rather than rushing the ball forward. Perhaps avoiding Watts who seemed to have glue on his hands was the goal, but it was strange considering they could have pushed to take the lead. Blues had four goals in the first eight minutes of the third and managed seven for the quarter. It was a telling blow. Despite the best efforts of Sam Williams, Matthew Fieldsend and Tim Kovess, De La just couldn’t kick enough goals. Trailing by 46 points at the final change, De La closed to within 16 points, but Blues steadied. Marshall Rippon seemed to be everywhere and when he tired, Ross Young, Jeremy Mugavin and Pete Summers picked up the slack. will go into summer with plenty of confidence and hopefully Xavier Murphy and Antony Forato decide to don the blue and gold again next year too.

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW The tendency is to jump on the side that won their final over the side that lost and has a double chance. That is often the case in the top league, but the VAFA is littered with examples of teams exiting in straight sets. St Bernard’s know all about this after last year and they will be hellbent on not letting it happen again. Blues fell short against the Snowdogs in both matches this year by five points so there is little between the sides. In both matches, Blues were on their last legs in terms of injuries, carrying a depleted bench to the final siren. Blues were very

impressive last week and their midfield is equal, if not superior, to St Bernards. The Snowdogs certainly have a few more options than De La did should Jack Watts catch fire again. Conversely at the defensive end is probably where Blues are light on when faced with the tall St Bernard’s forward line. The skipper, Hugh Vickers-Willis has lifted his game in the past month, but he and his defensive cohort will need their mids to apply enough pressure to ensure the ball is not coming in lace out.

ST KEVIN’S PUT PAID TO YEARS OF HEARTBREAK, AS OMS CLAIM BAY And then there were three. After ten seasons in Premier B, St Kevin’s has finally triumphed in September, with a hard-fought 16-point victory over St Bedes/Mentone in their semi-final. The win puts the SKOBs straight through to the Grand Final and means automatic promotion to William Buck Premier in 2016. The Tigers meet Old Melburnians in the Preliminary Final, after the OMs beat Old Brighton by six goals. St Kevins 13.7 (85) defeated St Bedes/Mentone 10.9 (69) I had family commitments on Saturday but was able to view the finals thanks to VAFA TV and commentary from the lads at 96.5 Inner FM. The SKOBs-Tigers final was an epic, and was a contest well worthy of the top two teams of the home and away season. The Tigers started the match better, and it was clear that the all-conquering ladder leaders would not be having it all their own way. The SKOBs defence was under siege early, and after eight minutes the Tigers had two goals on the board via Chris Richards and Tim Doherty, the latter making the most of a Jordan Gysberts’ error in defence. The bigger bodies of the St Kevin’s machine slowly worked their way back into the match by playing in front and quick ball movement. They kicked five unanswered goals in the space of 15 minutes through contributions from Gilham, Gerard Gleeson, Dowd, Meehan and Phil Edgar. Mitchell Coen kicked a late goal for the Tigers and they trailed by 13 points at the first change. Ben Dowd got the SKOBs off to a positive start in the second quarter with an immediate centre clearance but Gilham couldn’t finish the job. The two teams went goal for goal in an entertaining contest, and the pressure caused uncharacteristic turnovers on both sides. Tiger Dan Garside showed dash off half back, but was not rewarded as one of the Tyquin boys was tackled and penalised after taking too long trying to get onto the left foot. SKOB defender Kelvin Williams cost his side a goal when he took a risk going down the middle of the ground and it went straight back over his head to Tiger spearhead Luke Velluto, who kicked four for the day. Velluto was the beneficiary of 4

some great Tiger midfield work from Kane, Doherty, O’Toole, Tom Tyquin and the Richards boys. Zach Ginies kicked two in the quarter for SKOBs who narrowly stretched their half time lead to 17 points. The third quarter was another engrossing contest. The first two Tigers goals came through uncharacteristic St Kevin’s errors. A misdirected tap from a stoppage led to an impressive chain of passes through the midfield and Mitchell Coen finished off for the first goal after five minutes of play. Gilham replied for the SKOBs, then a Ben Sullivan error followed by a lightning quick Tiger transition finished with a Luke Velluto mark and goal. SKOB big man Gerard Gleeson kicked his third and Velluto replied. SKOB leader Plugger Lynch kicked the first behind of the quarter and this led to possibly the Premier B goal of the season. Two kicks from end to end. The kick-in was long and straight, and Chris Richards marked it in the middle of the ground. He played on quickly and launched the kick from just inside the centre circle. The ball bounced into a vacant goal square and through the uprights. The goal brought the margin back to seven points before Phil Edgar kicked a goal on the siren to give the SKOBs some breathing space going into the last quarter. The Tigers had their chances in the final term, but started with four behinds. When Michael Barnes kicked the first goal for the quarter at the 13 minute mark, the Tigers were within five points and it was game on! Unfortunately they couldn’t bridge the gap. Scoring dried up and Jason Salopek and Plugger Lynch added goals for the SKOBs to ensure a 16 point win. Old Melburnians 14.6 (90) defeated Old Brighton 7.12 (54) In the other semi-final Old Melburnians and Old Brighton were playing for their season and the right to challenge St Bedes/Mentone for a place in the Grand Final. Tom Paule took advantage of great ruckwork from Patrick Garschagen to snap the first for the OMs and then it was goal-for-goal during the PREMIER B — TIPS IN BOLD St Bedes/Mentone v Old Melburnians THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

next few minutes. A late goal to the Tonners gave them a narrow lead at quarter time. A bad defensive error from Lewis Haralambous allowed Tonner Tom Mariani to kick the first for the quarter before Alex Armstrong kicked the first of his six goals for the day for the OMs. Dylan Verney had a chance to reply for the Tonners but was put off by good defensive pressure. The OMs proceeded to kick three goals in five minutes to Armstrong and Cameron Beck before a brilliant smother and centring ball from Levi Otto gifted Tonners spearhead Dan Anthony his only goal for the day. The OMs kicked one more before half time and took a ten point lead into the main break. The Tonners immediately forced the ball forward and Michael Slater goaled after being pushed in the back. They had their chances but the Slater goal proved to be their only goal for the quarter as the OMs added four of their own to stretch the lead to 25 points at three-quarter time. Things didn’t get any better for the Tonners in the last. The OMs kicked three more, including two from Beck before the Tonners snatched a consolation goal at the 20 minute mark. When the siren sounded, the

The Preliminary final promises to be another fantastic contest. The Tigers’ loss to St Kevins brought their seven game winning streak to an end but they were very impressive, particularly through the midfield. Old Melburnians second half against Old Brighton was workmanlike, restricting the Tonners opportunities while creating plenty of their own. The season series is tied at 1-1. The OMs led all day and hung on for a one-point win in Round 5. They met again in Round 14 and the OMs led at three quarter time before the Tigers unleashed a seven goal to one final term to win by five goals. I am picking St Bedes/ Mentone to win.

BLOODS ELIMINATE HOES, BLUES EARN B GRADE One more contender turned pretender in the Premier C premiership race as Old Ivanhoe dropped out. The Hoes were finished in emphatic fashion by Old Haileyburians, who kept them to three scores for the games entirety and progress to the preliminary final. It was a September score line that required a double look with Ivanhoe restrained to 13 points in a 95-point thrashing. The Bloods move onwards and upwards to tackle the minor premiers Marcellin, who were bested by Monash Blues in the second semi-final. Monash’s spirited first half led the way to the Blues securing promotion to Premier B in 2016 and a grand final place with a 36-point win. Both games played at Casey Fields could be considered upsets but proved what form and confidence can do for a team. Marcellin and Old Haileybury will meet at Casey Fields on Saturday to decipher the final spot alongside Monash Blues.

2ND SEMI-FINAL REVIEW Old Ivanhoe had a five-goal breeze to start the first quarter but managed to lose the quarter comfortably with one scoring shot to Haileybury’s eight. And this was the tale of the elimination final on Sunday. The Bloods had the Hoes in a stranglehold when they faced the wind and blew them away with it. Ivanhoe kicked one goal in the first quarter with the advantage and one in the third on the second go. While Haileybury battered 12 of its 14 goals with the wind – capitalising on the favourable breeze. Haileybury had a matchwinning 47-point lead at three quarter time before opening the floodgates in the fourth quarter with seven celebratory goals to extend the final margin to 95. Nathan Waite and Jordan Donnelly led Haileybury’s attack with three goals apiece while Chris Povey was the Bloods’ best-onground in his efforts down back. What happened to Old Ivanhoe could come down to a lacklusture second half of the season, where they lost four of their last eight, including being smashed by Old 6

Haileyburians in Round 12 and pushed by the relegated Therry Penola in Round 14 and beaten by Williamstown in the final round of the year. They’ll be licking their wounds and searching for improvement to push them into contention for 2016.

1ST SEMI-FINAL REVIEW With a grand final spot on the line Monash Blues quickly laid claim to the position last Saturday. A 10-goal-to-three first half gave the Blues an inerasable 45-point advantage. Marcellin made a dent in Monash’s lead in the third quarter reducing it to 21-points. But another two goals and another goal-less quarter for the Eagles put the game to bed. Spearhead Nicholas Petering kicked two majors in the win, as did Gareth Taylor who claimed best-on-ground honours while Andrew Kay booted a game-high three goals in the loss. Monash’s 38-point win grants Premier B promotion and have a week off to rest up before playing for the C grade premiership. For Marcellin, the worrying sign is that they have now lost their last six finals fixtures. Another season in Premier C would be crushing for the club’s morale considering how close they have been in recent times.

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW

Round 5: Old Haileyburians 8.13 (61) defeated by Marcellin 20.13 (133)

Old Haileyburians will be the heavy underdogs when they meet Marcellin on Saturday but unlike the Eagles, the Bloods have proven their worth in finals. Marcellin finished first with a 15-3 winloss record. Old Haileybury squeezed into fourth place at 11-7. But with favouritism comes pressure and Haileybury knows how to apply a relentless amount as seen in last week’s affair with Old Ivanhoe. Outside the extra pressure of finals, when the two met in the home-and-away season, the Eagles won both outings convincingly by 72 and 65 points. So despite Marcellin’s finals form thus far they have the edge over Haileybury, and surely the minor premiers cannot just wash away and fall out of the finals in straight sets. Surely not! But who knows when the finals crunch gets on the attack. With all this said, I am predicting the Eagles to claw past the Bloods and into Premier

MATT KEOWN (NOBS/ST PATS) ‘The scene 2007: Terry Scanlon steps down as President and by the end of the playing year decided he wants to coach, after a break of almost 35 years! An assistant coach is required. I said to Jack Nihill, “that young player who is training with us in the club 18’s, plays with Sandhurst, surely he must be getting tired of travelling home each weekend – he may be interested in taking up a position as a playing coach!” Jack says he’ll find out. The rest is history and what a great history it was. Being recognised as one of the most decorated players in NOBSP history (Debut: 2008 146 games - B&F 2010,11,12 &13 -VAFA B&F 2011 & 12 - VAFA Rep 2012 Captain 2012-15 – RU B&F 2009 & 14 – Leading Goal kicker 2013, 14, 15.). A testament to Matt Keown’s preparation and fitness and a great example to other players who have played with him over the past 8 years.’ Bernard Skahill

‘I’ve never retired anyone, but the sight of Charlie Holst, Nick Ries, Shura Taft, and James Jorgensen walking off arm in arm was magnificent. Words fail me. Everyone that played in that game will remember that forever, and the young blokes who stood tall will be so much better for it. If only you could bottle that feeling!!! What a win, what a win!’

SHURA TAFT, CHARLIE HOLST, NICK RIES AND JAMES JORGENSEN (COLLEGIANS) ‘Yesterday I said goodbye to a significant part of my life, with 3 of the best blokes you could ever hope to know (and a legend in the lighter jumper who plays on). Collectively we played over 750 games of amateur footy. Won flags, lost flags, avoided relegation but most importantly had a bloody great time doing it. Life long mates and memories. Yesterday was one for the ages!’ Shura Taft

RETIREMENTS With the end of the season quickly approaching, the inevitable spate of players hanging up the boots, or even simply contemplating their football future, is amongst us once more. This week, we take a look at a couple of the stars from either side of the Yarra River who have called curtains on storied careers. Next week, we anticipate a few more emails will drop into the inbox with a few details of the greats who have saluted, at least on the field, for the last time.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

MONDAY, I GOT SATURDAY ON MY MIND A funny story came across my desk this week from Brad Beitzel. Not only does it illustrate the importance of checking your dates once, twice and maybe even three times (a lady), but it also presents a strong message to players, both past and present, to consider a future as an umpire in the VAFA. As you will read in the following excerpt, former players such as Victor have moved into umpiring and now see their role as an umpire (whether field, boundary or goal) as passionately as they viewed their role as a player. Contact Brian Woodhead at bwoodhead@vafa. com.au with any enquiries on how to take the first step into a new role as a VAFA official. It could very well be the greatest move you will make in your football career! ‘BETWEEN Melbourne’s Saturday traffic snarls and 200 appointments, umpires’ organiser Brian Woodhead has a hot phone at noon as he navigates the starting of games. But umpire Victor Wong went the other way and arrived a day early for his first final last Sunday! Wong, 51, had an excuse.

10

It’s Wong’s 33rd consecutive season with the VAFA after 32 years of playing (Kew 16 years and Chadstone 16) he has turned to the whistle. “I haven’t missed a week and each week for each of those 33 years has been on a Saturday – I’ve never been involved in any Sunday games in the Amateurs,” Wong explained. Wong’s embarrassment was matched by his frustration at having trekked cross town but none of that got in his way of his 2015 resolution to each day to do 100-rep sets of sit-ups, push-ups and squats with 5 x 1km runs accompanying the workout. “I do it even when I umpire and on Saturdays I then help run the Sukhothai Thai Restaurant in Northcote.” “I do get tired by Sunday but it’s been a satisfying winter.”’ When he is not umpiring, Victor runs fitness classes for both individuals and groups. Seeing how fit Victor remains even into his 50s, he might be worth giving a call as the summer approaches on 0414 826 183.

HUNGRY, THIRSTY: PREMIERSHIP DROUGHTS With eight teams playing off in senior grand finals this year, it is hard to ignore the burning question on the lips of every budding statistician. Who is the thirstiest side competing this week? Well, in Division 1, Kew has been well watered in the past two years with back-to-back premierships and a chance to go the three peat against Ormond. However, they waited 34 years to return to the podium, so they are very aware of how hard it is to break the drought. Ormond’s last piece of silverware was won in 2008 when they were in C Grade, the section they will jump back into next year. In Division 3, Emmaus St Leos has won three senior premierships since it first entered the competition as St Leo’s Wattle Park in 1992. They won a premiership in their inaugural season, however it has been over a decade since their last senior victory, coming in 2002. Their opponent, West Brunswick, is coming off a premiership in Division 4 last season. Nonetheless, they too will be striving for their first Division 3 premiership since 2002. Division 4 plays host to a game between two ‘new’ clubs. Parkside has returned from the North, the Northern Football League that is, to rejoin the VAFA for the first time since 2002, and now proudly sit on the verge of a miraculous premiership win from 5th spot. The last time they won a premiership in the VAFA goes back to 1988 when they were crowned the champions of B Grade. Funnily enough, they beat Kew that year THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

by 50 points. The team that stands in their way is the Canterbury Cobras, formerly of EFL fame, who are the only side in this bunch of eight who has not won a VAFA premiership. In only their second season as a VAFA club, but with a rich and extensive history as one of the oldest Australian Rules football clubs, Canterbury has a grand opportunity to open their tally after a stellar H&A season. The answer to the golden question comes from Division 2, where Ivanhoe awaits a crack at their first senior premiership since 1969, when they were victorious in Premier B. For those who are numerically challenged, that is an overwhelming 46 years since they’ve won a senior premiership. They competed in the Division 3 grand final in 2012, but were smashed by the all-conquering Yarra Valley. This year, they have the opportunity to win three premierships at Reserves, Colts and Senior level. Such a feat hasn’t been replicated since Kew achieved the triple in 2013. Their opponents will be the hungry Old Paradians who also host a hefty drought against their name. They have been waiting since 1986, when they were in Premier B themselves. Old Paradians shared a few dalliances with Ormond in their time near the top of the competition, including their victory over them in 1963. On a side note, this is also the first time any of these sides have taken on their respective opponent in a senior grand final. A new narrative for the next era awaits. 11

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

A FEW FUN FACTS ABOUT SOME OF OUR FINALISTS… PREMIER Old Trinity will be playing off in their first Premier grand final next week. The highest they have previously finished in the top flight is 4th. If University Blues beat St Bernards this week, it will be the first time they have played Old Trinity in a VAFA grand final.

DIVISION 1 Ormond and Kew last played in the same section together in 1989. This was the last time Kew was in Premier A. Kew is chasing a third straight premiership for the first time in their history. This is the first time they’ve been promoted back into the Premier sections since 1995. Ormond has not won a Division 1 premiership since 1933. Kew has never played in a Division 1 grand final.

DIVISION 2

The last time the Snowdogs took on Uni Blues in a final was in the 2004 Premier Grand Final, where Uni Blues took the chocolates by 66 points and John Kanis was coach.

As previously mentioned, Ivanhoe has not won a senior premiership since 1969.

PREMIER B

The last time Ivanhoe participated in Division 1 was in 2003. They finished in 9th place that season.

St Kevins has broken a nine game finals losing streak with their victory over St Bede’s Mentone. Their last finals win was over a decade ago in 2004! St Bede’s Mentone will be hoping that the spirit of the Luke Beveridge era still lives strong as they take on Old Melburnians in the hope of jumping back into Premier section. Beveridge was the coach of SBMT from 2006-08 when they won three in a row and jumped from Premier C into the top flight. Old Melburnians last played in Premier in 2011, the year that St Bede’s played off in the grand final against Collegians and lost.

PREMIER C Marcellin has not won a final in their past six outings. Monash Blues has not played in Premier B since 1992. The last time they won a Premier C premiership was back in 1987. Old Haileybury is searching for its first premiership since it won Premier A in 2006. Carl Steinfort, former Geelong and Collingwood AFL player, was named best afield that afternoon. 12

Speaking of three peats, Old Paradians won 6 of 7 Premier A premierships from 1962-1968. This streak featured two three peats.

DIVISION 3 West Brunswick is playing in consecutive grand finals for the first time since 1980-81. Unfortunately, they only won the 1981 grand final of that pairing. As such, if they beat Emmaus St Leos, this will be the first time they’ve gone back to back. Emmaus St Leos won a premiership in their inaugural season (1992) in the same division they currently compete in.

DIVISION 4 This is Canterbury’s first grand final in the VAFA. It is also just their second season. This is the first season back in the VAFA for Parkside, who joined the Northern Football League in 2002. Parkside won a premiership in the NFL in 2009 when they beat Hurstbridge in Division 3 by 16 points. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

MAGAREY MEDAL NUMBER 2 FOR JOEL CROSS Former Old Xaverians and Old Camberwell midfielder Joel Cross has won his second Magarey Medal, storming away from all comers to win with 25 votes. “I was coming tonight to have a good night and it turned out nicely,” Cross, 28, quipped following the win. “It’s been a fantastic opportunity for me to come over here and play in such a fantastic competition and I really do love the SANFL, and I love South Australia and I love the people I’ve met.” Cross started his VAFA career in 2006 in the U19s at Old Xaverians before switching to Old Camberwell in 2007. In his first year at Old Camberwell he won the club’s best and fairest in a premiership year, before continuing to play for both Old Camberwell and Box Hill Hawks in the ensuing years. Cross now has three competition best and fairests in his trophy cabinet after he won the VFL Reserves Todd Medal when playing for the Hawks. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

THE MIDNIGHT HOUR: ORMOND-KEW IV There were stages during the Old Geelong-Ormond clash at Waverley Oval where it all seemed to be falling into place for the Oggers. They were creating out of the midfield, using the ball well off the flanks and they were gaining shots at goal from very gettable positions on the field. Unfortunately for the OGs, they missed, and they missed and they missed again. For the Old Geelong faithful, it must’ve been heartbreaking seeing their side fall short of a Premier C berth as Ormond took their opportunities and clung onto a strong win to set up everyone’s favourite Rocky sequel. ORMOND-KEW IV. The one where Drago is quipped saying ‘if he dies, he dies’. In footy, it all appears just as heartless. You have 26 shots on goal, you only convert 9 of them, and the other 17 miss the mark. If you miss, you miss. There’s nothing else to it. The Monders’ youth once again showed their class, as Nick Edwards and Dimitri Fasoulis were a huge part of the equation for pulling Ormond into the ultimate test. It was a fine day for football on Saturday afternoon at Waverley Oval, and the sun was shining on Old Geelong early as they kicked the first three goals and looked ominous. However, by quarter time it was back to square, with Rob Chisholm in red-hot form on the half forward line. Both sides had a key out, with Colby O’Brien missing for the OGs and Chris Coghlan not coming up for Ormond. The battles across the ground were immense. Martinov went toe-to-toe with Carl Joyce, who was simply outstanding, Wood and Barnes took it up to each other and Rupert Kemp faced off with Chisholm in an engrossing battle. In each of these battles, there was a sense that neutralisation had taken place. The game was won on the outside, where Ormond were cleaner and classier in putting their finishing touches on. For all Nicholas Hardie-Grant’s excellent work across the ground, I’m sure he’d agree with me that he was guilty of butchering the ball on a number of occasions, including in the aftermath of two 25-metre penalties where he missed a relatively easy shot on goal in the third quarter. Nonetheless, he was not the only man in the blue and white 16

hoops that missed gettable chances. On no less than five occasions, Old Geelong missed gettable shots in their dominant ten minutes at the start of the third term. Once Ormond got the ball back into their half, they kicked over the zone and had the players who ran hard into the forward line. The hard-running Fasolulis capitalised on three of these opportunities and set up another couple. In the final stanza, Old Geelong had to come back from 16 points down. Jack McMeel kicked one, then they missed… and alas, they missed again. After Chisholm kicked a beauty from 50 out, there was toing and froing, however the missed opportunities came back to haunt Old Geelong as they fell by 14 points. The footy was extremely entertaining and free flowing from flank to flank, and it must be said that Old Geelong has a lot of positives to take from the season, with wins over every side in the competition, excepting for the most important one of all, Ormond. Willie Bee’s votes: 5 Rupert Kemp (OG) 4 Ryan Martin (Ormond) 3 Nick Edwards (Ormond) 2 Sam Blandford (Ormond) 1 Josh Hoevenaars (OG)

WAYNE WEIDEMANN’S GRAND FINAL PREVIEW We’ve been hit with a bit of a Christmas in September theme here, as the two best sides throughout the Home and Away season face off in the big one. In the red corner, we have the minor premiers Ormond, with a season record of 18-2. Without the influence of that pesky mosquito that is Kew, they would have had the perfect season. Instead, they come into the game reeling from their semi final loss to the brown and gold. Ormond is a club with an exceptional VAFA history, and there is little doubt that they harbor ambitions of moving back into the top flight over before a quarter of this century passes. The last time they hoisted a D-Grade (Divisional) premiership was back in 1933. Since that day, the Monders have THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

lifted a premiership cup 12 times, including nine times in A Grade. Richard Simon, Ashleigh Lever and the Ormond lads would love nothing more than for 2015 to mark the beginning of a new era. With plenty of young talent, including the explosive Nick Edwards, the cool head Matthew Oaten down back and the developing midfield of Sam Mason, Henry and Jeremy Simon. Match that with old heads of Matthew Martinov, Rob Chisholm, Simon Keleher and of course, Mal ‘Big Heist’ Michael, and they are hard to stop when they get on a roll. However, in the blue corner is the challenger Kew. Kew has a formidable record in the past three seasons, winning two premierships and now playing off in a third consecutive grand final. Alike Ormond, Kew is a district side, and one who was struggling coming into the 2011 season, after narrowly avoiding relegation to Division Four. Enter Ian Aitken and Joe Chessari, and a host of new faces including Andrew Brazzale and Thomas Leeds, and the club’s fortunes have been turned on their head. In 2013 they defeated Elsternwick in the Division 3 grand final and St Mary’s Salesian last year in the Division 2 finale. This year, with key forwards Brazzale and Maibaum tipped to return, they are just as hungry for the three-peat. With improvement from Jack Delbridge and Ned Rohrt in the middle, the old firm down back continually doing their job and the X-factor of Zac Jones and Tim ‘Beacon’ Orchard, Kew is not the side to slack off. What we have here is a marvelous game of football DIVISION 1 — TIPS IN BOLD (YEARS TOTAL 74/82%)

RAIDERS VANQUISH JOCS AND FACE HOES IN GRANNY Old Paradians booked their spot in this week’s grand final against Ivanhoe with a stirring, 30-point, come-from-behind win over St John’s at Aquinas College. An unlikely outcome for many outsiders, the win sees Parade gain a welldeserved promotion into Division 1 in 2016. Trailing by 35 points at quarter-time, the Raiders found themselves in a precarious position, and responded in fine-style. Coming off their gritty elimination final victory over Northern Blues, Parade bottled the momentum gained and took it into last week. The momentum swayed with howling gale, and the team that made the most of the breeze and more importantly, kicked goals against it, fared the better. St John’s made full use of it in the first but unfortunately for the JOCs, that’s where the good news stopped. The Raiders sprung to life in the second term and swung the momentum in their favour. They slammed on sixgoals-to-nil and converted a 35-point deficit into a seven-point lead. Parade is renowned for the ability to restrict sides scoring and capitalising with attacking efficiency. These trademarks are what got them into the preliminary final and now into the grand final. The Raiders may have entered this finals series in scratchy form, but they surely saved their best until last. St John’s to their credit mounted a third quarter challenge, but inaccuracy and a lack of structure inside-50 didn’t allow them to take full advantage. Parade managed two goals against the breeze, which were like gold. The JOCs spent their petrol tickets in the third and the Raiders put their foot down in the last to secure a memorable win. It’s a great fillip for a club that’s struggled to find the form and consistency over the past three years to mount any serious challenge. After being bundled out of last year’s finals series by Eltham without a whimper, this year the Raiders found a steely resolve that will hold them in good stead. St John’s exit the year in far less glory than it began. The JOCs started the year with dash and vigour 18

and an unwavering hunger. After an 8–0 start to the year, the JOCs were hit by the injury stick and struggled thereafter to field their best team and unfortunately, it signalled their downfall. Finals are won with continuity in personnel, game plan and performance, and St John’s simply were too inconsistent in all three.

2015 SEN GRAND FINAL PREVIEW: IVANHOE v OLD PARADIANS @ HIGHGATE RESERVE, CRAGIEBURN For Parade, Ivanhoe offers a far greater challenge. The Hoes are a different beast. The Raiders have failed in both their encounters this season, by an average losing margin of 20 points. After burying its 2014 demons at Highgate Reserve with their elimination final win over Northern Blues, the venue holds no fear for the Raiders. Ivanhoe has taken its show on the road and succeeded for the majority of the year, and simply fear no one. Paul Harris & Co. have done a remarkable job in preparing the Hoes for a legitimate premiership tilt and have one more hurdle to overcome. Ivanhoe play a systemic and structured style that has held them in excellent stead this year, and has proven extremely hard to combat. Their ability to remain staunch in their game style is a major strength, but it can be exploited. Parade plays a highly contested game, with plenty of numbers around the ball and they have the capacity to grind sides down. In their last defeat, which was only their second loss this year, to Melbourne High, Ivanhoe failed to win the footy at the coalface and were beaten in a dogfight. This should be the template for the Raiders. Parade’s bigger bodied midfielders will

relish the congestion, and the Raiders possess enough match-winners up forward to capitalise on minimal opportunities. Ivanhoe generates the majority of their scores from behind centre and rely on thwarting opposition’s attacking chains and then burning them on the rebound. The vast expanses of Highgate Reserve will favour the Hoes ability to switch the ball laterally from their back half and attack through the wings. Parade must engage Ivanhoe’s defenders and not allow them to guard space and intercept at will. Parade’s pressure inside-50 must be manic and lock the ball in their forward half for as long as possible. At the other end of the ground, Parade’s back six will have its hands full. Ivanhoe gunforwards in Mitch Lovell, Reuben BlackmooreMoore and Justin Harty are dynamic and elusive and are in red-hot form. Like most games, the key to victory lies with the side that can win the ball, control it and force opposition turnovers and capitalise. Simply, control the ball when you have it, and fight like hell to win it back when you don’t. I believe that Ivanhoe will withstand the inevitable Paradian pressure and hold their nerve to take out their first senior premiership since 1969.

GRAND FINAL: MAGPIES OR ANIMALS? Emmaus St. Leo’s were able to account for Aquinas un-scathed and Aquinas tried hard all day but, simply didn’t have the firepower. West Brunswick just harassed the Hawks for four quarters. Hawthorn struggled with the wind and the Magpies forward pressure. Well, we’ve been predicting this match-up since halfway through the year. The best defence will face off against the best attack. The stage is set for that “One day in September” and a game to remember. To the semis:

S/F 1: EMMAUS ST. LEO’S DEFEATED AQUINAS Good conditions at Garvey Oval Bundoora. The Bloods with their backs to the wall managed to grab their only lead with the first point of the game. The Animals were keen to dominate from the first bounce with Ryan Harding looking good early and looking fit. In the second, the Animals continued their dominance, however they kicked seven points straight before scoring three goals at the end of the quarter to Aquinas’ one point. A 48-point lead at the long break, saw Aquinas come out and attempt to change the momentum but the Animals defence stood firm, only letting Aquinas two goals in three quarters. The Animals put in a great four-quarter performance to brew a 94-point victory with Callum Hogan (BOG) and Will Carpenter leading the defence. Ryan Harding led all scorers with seven goals, helped out by Lalor, McIvor, Paul Baranello and Will Hillman with two goals each. Most of Aquinas’ stars were quiet however, Michael Jess (one goal) and Phil Jurkovsky (one goal) stood out. Billy O’Loughlin was the only multiple goal-scorer for the Bloods. The Animals are riding high with one more hurdle to leap over.

S/F 2: WEST BRUNSWICK DEFEATED HAWTHORN A sunny day, with wind interrupting was the flavour of the day at Meade Reserve, the same ground where West Brunswick and Hawthorn had battled it out for the Division 4 Grand Final just 12 20

@gavsouthern

months earlier. Hawthorn was kicking to the train station end and into a genuine 6-7-goal breeze. I thought the Hawks had actually settled earlier but they still couldn’t get passed the CHB line, led by Cormac Cashi as they struggled into the wind. The Magpies were blazing and not looking for targets until Dylan Muscat marked from 25 out. Up by two goals, the Magpies then tried to kick scores from outside the arc but the wind took the ball through the points every time. Hawthorn were really struggling with kick-outs, not using the huddle and trying to pinpoint targets on the flanks. The Magpies slowly built confidence as the game progressed and finished the last 10 minutes of the first kicking 5-3 and a 7-11 to zero scoreline. Hawthorn Coach, Luke Mather, implored the Hawks at quarter time and had belief, as you should. After Muscat’s goal, the Hawks got going in the second, sticking to the game plan, and two huge goals from Sam Gold (BOG and 3 goals) outside the arc reduced the margin to 28 at the half. Going into the third, the sun left us and the quarter started slowly. The Hawks scored the first into the breeze, but the Magpies were then able to capitalise. Strong Bill Irving marks (three goals), a goal from Cormac Cashin, streaming through from the backline in conjunction with three late ones from the Magpies got the lead out passed 11 goals. By the fourth, the wind petered out and so did the game with the Magpies coming out 54 point victors. Warwick Baker was best for the Magpies.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW It’s great to see the VAFA came out with the times and venue so quickly for this weeks Grand Finals. You will struggle to find a better ground for the Division 3 Grand Final than at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham this Sunday. I know both coaches, Al Sutherland and Angus Hamilton had a good look at their opposition last week and BOTH have massive tasks on how to best attack the match. I’m at a loss to predict a winner but to choose one I’ve had to ask myself some questions: DIVISION 3 — TIPS IN BOLD Emmaus St. Leo's v West Brunswick

Please email your match reports, thoughts and feelings by Sunday afternoon to gavsouthern@me.com

Emmaus St. Leo’s has averaged 129 points a game in the home/away season and it’s up to 140 for the finals. The defence has also improved allowing opposition scoring an average of 60 HA and just the 48 for finals. West Brunswick are 105 HA and 100 for finals and have maintained their defence at 48-50. This can be the story here alone. If it’s low scoring, could this play into the Magpies hands? The strengths of both sides is the ESL forward line/WB backline. ESL’s forward line of Harding, Beluszar, Hillman, Robin, Lalor and Hill are all proven goal-kickers. Not all of them need to be firing to win. West Brunny has a history of playing a spare and their backline has been a wall all year. Which structure best suits? Do you tag Magpie, Cormac Cashin in defence? At the other end, the West Brunswick forward line put tremendous pressure on their opposition and has kicked more than half of their score from turnovers. Can the Animals utilise the ball from kick-outs and clearances coming out?

Then there’s battle of the midfield, it’s 50/50 but, at the end of the day, Emmaus St. Leo’s have done nothing to change my vote. I’m tipping the Animals.

THANK-YOU Lastly, after completing my first year as a scribe, I wanted to take the time to thank a few people that have made my life easier during the season. Thanks to Andrew Leonard for his support. William Balme, for his support and stepping in for me round 11. Also, a big thank-you to the people who contributed during the year from the Div 3 sides: Dr. Mack (ESL), Coach Angus Hamilton (WB), Pat Clancy (Haw), Kane Fitzpatrick (SU), Sam Woollard (LTU) and John Alexandridis (EP) Good Luck to both sides.

Can Magpie Owen Taylor, restrict the influence of Jon O’Connor/Ballard (or Hawa) in the ruck?

BRING YOUR KNIFE AND FORK, IT’S TIME FOR THE SEPTEMBER FEAST Every year, in every footy league across every footy code, the tales of clubs making the big dance come to the fore. And while over time, with every telling, these stories become more and more embellished, the remarkable stories of commitment, perseverance and belief, will be etched not only into the walls of history of the competition, but the minds of every single individual involved, from the captain to the juniors helping run the boundary in the reserves. Canterbury and Parkside have travelled vastly different paths to the Grand Final this year. Canterbury, after so nearly finding promotion in their first year were installed by many as favourites to take the chocolates this year. And true to form, they played up to the lofty expectations; however losses in the last round of the season and the semi-final were well-publicised blemishes on their record. Their strong win against Box Hill North allowed them to regain their credibility and win promotion. They’ve been the best team all year, and are deserved Grand Finalists. Parkside, on the other hand, were the great unknown at season’s start, and have gone about things a little differently. After losing to Canterbury by the smallest of margins in the first round, their stocks took a hit and their season was peppered with disappointing losses and a battle to even make the finals. A stark contrast to the season of their counterpart, who they are due to face on Saturday afternoon at Garvey Oval. After scraping through to the top six, many, myself included, didn’t give Parkside much of a chance. While we were all singing the praises of Canterbury and Westbourne, Parkside were unassumingly going about their business, and unbeknownst to the rest of the competition, taking serious aim at the ultimate accolade. With the stock to match their ambitions, Parkside have timed their run perfectly, sensationally knocking off Westbourne in the semi-final and then coasting through against the formidable North Brunswick in the preliminary final. 22

www.vafa.com.au

Parkside at no stage during the year cracked the top three on the ladder, they loss to sides below them, they loss to sides above them, but at the end of the day, that doesn’t matter now. On paper, they have been the best side in the competition over the past month, and like Canterbury, deserve their spot in the big dance. In fact, I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more. Editor’s note: Weirdly enough, there are many parallels between Canterbury and Parkside. Canterbury entered the VAFA’s bottom division two years ago when they transferred from the SFL to the VAFA, whilst Parkside re-entered the VAFA this season after a hiatus from the competition from 2002-2014 when they moved to the Northern Football League. They won the (then named) B Section Premiership in 1988 and participated in A Grade in 1989. These back-stories only increase the intrigue surrounding the contest. Looking at last week’s preliminary finals, Parkside and North Brunswick headed out way North, to the impeccable surface of Highgate Reserve. With both sides coming off unimaginable shock wins last week, you could forgive either side for the emotion of the occasion getting to them. The two sides, who in theory should have just been making up the numbers of the top six, were now playing off for a spot in Division Three. Parkside got the jump early, and never looked backed. They kicked eight first quarter goals, with the usual crowd of Potter, McLaren and Gresham in frightfully good form. They went into the sheds with six-goal lead, soon to be eight goals, and then a final margin of 11 goals. They were too fast, too skilled and too strong for the Bulls. The Potter family combining for 10 majors while Shane McLaren, who surely must be the league B ‘n F winner, continues to impress everyone. For the Bulls it was the ever reliable Dimarco and Peter Butler who tried hard all day. DIVISION 4 — TIPS IN BOLD (YEARS TOTAL 50/83%) Canterbury v Parkside THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

Also heading to the booming northern suburbs, Canterbury and Box Hill headed to Parade College. Canterbury looking to avenge their poor performance from the week before and Box Hill North hoping to extend their terrific season. With the breeze giving Box Hill a small advantage in the first quarter, they pushed Canterbury early and caused the once silky Cobra outfit to be plagued by the same skill errors from the week prior. The tension within the Cobra cheer squad could have been cut with a knife; such was the strength of the trepidation. Eventually, Canterbury chiselled in a four-goal lead, however the game was never out of Box Hill’s reach, the sides going blow for blow throughout. Box Hill got within a couple of kicks during the third quarter to place the pressure back on the Cobras. The scoreboard reads a comfortable Canterbury victory, however in reality, it was anything but. Scott Fitzgerald and Nick Szabo were sensational for Canterbury while Michael Tilly and Colin Osborn were courageous throughout. Canterbury have done it the easy way, excepting for their loss to North Brunswick, Parkside the hard

way, but it means jack squat at 2:15pm on Saturday afternoon. Both sides have earned their place in this year’s Grand Final and it promises to be one for the ages. Much to the despair of the Division Four pundits, I labelled Canterbury the juggernaut of the competition earlier in the season, and whether or not you agree with the embellished description, they’ve undisputedly been the best side this year. They’ve beaten Parkside twice this year, once by the smallest of margins, once by a fair whack. But they haven’t encountered Parkside in this type of form which will give Parkside buckets of belief. Who will win the battle of the Scotts? Fitzgerald and Shane ‘Scott’ McLaren. Get down to Garvey Oval for a magnificent day of footy on Saturday! For what it is worth, my tip is Canterbury by 12 points. RETROSPECTIVE

Geoff Reilley

@GeoffreyReilley

5 YEARS AGO – 2010 It was preliminary final time in Division 1 and the game was played at St Bernards with a howling wind, mud and spasmodic rain, certainly not ideal conditions but it is a winter game! Monash Blues were up against North Old Boys/St Pats for the right to challenge Werribee. Monash had the better of the first quarter, leading 3.5 to zero at quarter time with most of the ascendancy obtained late in the quarter. When Monash kicked an early goal into the wind it didn’t look good for NOBS and it got worse in the third quarter with Monash in total control at the final break, 10.7 to 1.4. The last quarter commenced with the heavens opening up and although NOBS kicked the first goal, Monash cantered to the line 13.10 to 2.7. Best – Coe, McKenzie, Frater, Main, Collins, Young (Monash) and Harwood, Keown, Maxton, Hull, Layley, Hosking (NOBS). In Division 2 Old Paradians were always in control against Glen Eira and won convincingly 10.15 to 7.6 for the right to challenge the powerful Banyule team in the Grand final. Best – Mahony, Spithill, Denham (4), Serafini, Kandilakis, McAllister (OP) and King, Mills, Elmi, Kohout, Krull, Tsirogiannis (GE). It was a much closer prelim final in Division 3 with St Johns holding out the dogged Power House 12.18 to 11.11, Power House continually fighting back to stay in touch. St Johns were more polished although they did miss a number of opportunities to close the match earlier. Best – Arnold, Christiansen, Abela, Mara, O’Connor, Pickering (StJ) and Taylor (6), Baker, Burnside, Saraw, Beardell, Foster (PH). In Division 4 the talented Mt Lilydale team thrashed Manningham Cobras 13.23 to 3.4 in the preliminary final and would meet Monash Gryphons in the Grand Final the following week. The Cobras had been forced to make no less than 7 changes for this match and were noticeably undermanned. While Mount Lilydale struggled to convert from their many chances, the Cobras had few chances in front of goal. Best – Coonan, McCallum, Daley, Paull (3), Wall, Finkmeyer (MtL) and De Vercelli, Orton, Bosso, Polites, Pentland, Arman (Cobras).

10 YEARS AGO – 2005 It was a huge day for both Beaumaris and Uni Blacks supporters in C Section as both clubs were 42

competing in senior and reserves grand finals. It was a tight, low scoring affair in the early game. Beaumaris led at every change winning the title 6.14 to 4.8 and their supporters felt their senior team could very well emulate their early performers. Although the early part of the main game did not go the Sharks’ way, big Matulick kicked a major on the quarter time siren to see his team trail by 2 goals. The margin had increased noticeably by half time and 4 and a half goals was the difference. The game went beyond doubt in the third quarter as the Blacks ran amuck with 7 goals to 2 and an almost impossible task ahead for the Sharks. Although the Sharks fought out the game as expected, the slick Blacks’ outfit recorded a stunning premiership win 20.12 to 8.5 Matt Kempton was awarded the Michael Ritterman Medal for best on ground. In D1 Section Fitzroy demolished Ormond, 24.6 to 10.11 to win the premiership, the 8.2 to 1.5 in the first quarter unsettling Ormond, who never looked like making up the difference and would have to be satisfied with the promotion to C Section for the following season. Best – David, Cianchi (6), O’Reilly. Green, Galvin, Zanos (Fitzroy) and Metz, Bailey, D Robbins, Miller, Keleher, B Deledio (Ormond). Fitzroy’s Tim Davis won the John Manton Medal. Old Geelong won both the D2 Section Senor and Reserves’ premierships on a great occasion for their supporters. Only 5 points up in the main game at three quarter time, OGs held their nerve to win 9.17 to 6.14. Best – Bell, Bayles, O’Brien (4), Vickers-Willis, Cannon, Lansdell (OG) and Burrows, Boxall, Collins, Plummer, West, McDonald (Rupertswood). It was a St Johns’ double in D3 Section, the seniors winning 11.10 to Werribee 8.11, the reserves winning by 34 points. Best – Sinclair, Gaget, Pickering, O’Connor, Arnold, Skinner (St J) and Morrow, Tedesco, C Lee (4), Borg, Ayling, Vasilou (Werribee). Elsternwick won the D4 flag 16.11 to St Mary’s 15.13 in a very entertaining game. Best – Curtain, Beddingfield, C Mahony, Mason, Putt, Thiele (Elst) and C Armstrong, D’Astoli, Dwyer, Wright, Crilly (StM).

20 YEARS AGO – 1995 St Leos Wattle Park went into the E East Grand Final firm favourites against Aquinas who had battled their way through the first semi and prelim for the right to challenge for the title. St Leos’ day started so well with the Reserves winning comfortably over Old Carey 18.5 to 13.14, St Leo’s accuracy pivotal to the result. After Aquinas started well THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

in the first quarter of the main game with 4 goals to 1 a pattern had been set for the day with each team putting together a pattern of unanswered goals throughout the match. By three quarter time it looked as though there would be a ‘boilover’, Aquinas holding a 3 goal lead and although there appeared to be no real wind effect, the grandstand end at Camberwell seemed to be easier to convert. Both teams had excellent goal scoring ability and the final term became an outstanding presentation of amateur football. Paul Kelly goaled for St Leos within the first minute, Brendan Vaughan 3 minutes later and Paul Kelly twice more to take his tally to six for the day. When Brendan Vaughan kicked his 5th at the 17 minute mark the Two Blues were 22 points up, but then it became Aquinas’ turn with Anthony Whelan recording his third for the match and Jason Livingston unleashing as the Bloods kicked four more to be a point up at the 30 minute mark. For the next 3 minutes it was ball up after ball up, deep in the St Leos forward zone as both teams threw themselves relentlessly into the fray. During the 33rd minute of this wonderful contest, Martin Shacklock somehow let fly with his left boot from deep in the pocket to score a behind and level the scores, followed by the siren for an exhilarating draw. The clubs would be required to return to the field of battle the following week! Best – Armstrong, Kelly (6), Ronchi, Douglass, McKenzie, Corrigan (St Leos) and J Livingstone (7), Flynn, Vankerhoven, Kenny, Honey, Morice (Aquinas).

30 YEARS AGO – 1985 Old Trinity won the D Section Grand Final defeating MHSOB 21.17 to 12.4. Best – Pontefrack, Norman, R Heath, Robison, Allibon (3), Maizels (OT) and Dowling, Todd, Peterson, McLardie, Phelps, Wix (MHSOB). The E Section Grand Final was a triumph for Heatherton who powered home to win 16.19 to Preston’s 6.11. Best – A Coffey, Howell, M Easy, Jones, Ulbrick, Hopkins (Heatherton) and Caton, I De Bono, Yendall, Haysom, Milner, Prowse (Prest). The popular Ian Munro, affectionately known as “Munners”, was named VAFA Personality of the Year. Previous winners in attendance during the announcement were George McTaggart, Peter Hutchinson and Peter Harris.

40 YEARS AGO – 1975 In the C Section Grand Final, StKilda CBC was winners over MHSOB 13.12 to 11.12. Best – Rothwell, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

Carroll, Drinan, Hinrichs, Sherman, Kellaway (CBC) and R Wood, Cooper, Short, Graham, Haylock, C McKenzie (MHSOB). D Section premiers were Fawkner 16.18 over Hampton Rovers 15.11 in a high standard game. Best – Smith, Foley, Stapleton (3), Duggan, K Ward (3), Richardson (Fawkner) and Young, Leeming, McNaughton, Rowston, Bennett, Malone (HRovers).

50 YEARS AGO – 1965 University Blacks won the A Section second semi final 23.12 over Collegians 5.7. It had been a magnificent display by the powerful Blacks’ team. Best – Burston, Galbraith, Browne (7), Tuck (3), Fleming, Carbery (UB) and Symons, Ferguson, Daff, Lucas, Read, Evans (Coll). Caulfield Grammarians won the B Section second semi final after being 7 points down at half time but Old Scotch could not maintain their lead with the final score in favour of the Grammarians 15.9 to 10.13. Best – Williams, Ward (4), Cayzer, Davidson (5), T Tootell, Caspers (Caulf) and Atkinson, Hay, Hughes, Birch, Campbell, I Wilson (Scotch). St Pats Old Collegians won a hard fought preliminary final against AJAX in E Section after being down by 15 points at three quarter time. Their 7 goal final quarter was very impressive. Final score 14.13 to 13.7. Best – Seaburgh (4), Sullivan (3), Chaplin, Fry, P O’Brien, Basham (StP) and Fein, Freeman, Synman, Merkel, Goldfarb (5), Goldwasser (AJAX).

60 YEARS AGO - 1955 Ormond supporters were delighted when both their seniors and Under 19’s won their second semi finals. The seniors defeated Uni Blues 11.10 to 5.9 and the Under 19’s defeated Old Scotch 6.9 to 2.5. Don Louttit, Ormond Junior’s star spearhead kicked the 2 goals needed for his century. Ormond Junior coach, Jack Wilson, was to be congratulated for the manner in which he had moulded the youngsters at Ormond. Best and Fairest winners were T Hussey (Bellfield) in D Section, A C Dick (National Bank) in E Section and D Pollock (Bellfield) in Junior Section. Glenhuntly’s Bill McGrory, second in the D Section voting had won the medal twice previously! 43

SHARKS CIRCLE BUT XAVS PREVAIL IN THRILLER It was Preliminary Final day for the Under 19s, and in Premier section it was a mouth-watering battle between the Old Xaverians and Beaumaris at Waverley Oval. At stake was a spot in the Grand Final against St.Bernards. It was a cracking first term, tight heavily contested and both teams came out hot and ready to go, throwing their bodies around in a typical finals like atmosphere. Beaumaris got the first of the day before the Old Xavs responded through key forward Tom Wynne. It was goal for goal in the first term and it ended with Beaumaris leading by eight points. The Xavs responded to Callinan’s call for more defensive pressure, kicking two goals to zip and taking the momentum into half time. It was a tight tussle in the first half and both teams had positives and negatives, however, both coaches would have been reasonably happy with their chargers. The premiership quarter was by far the most exciting of the game with plenty of goals and intense pressure acts. Beaumaris had the better of the Old Xaverians early in the third term getting out to a four-goal lead at one stage with McLaren, Lucas and Gibbens firing. It looked like Beaumaris were ready to stun the competition. However, football is a funny game and the Kew boys started to get first hands to the football and wrestled back the ascendency through Troiani, Morris and Vander Haar who all stood up when it was needed, kicking four goals in five minutes to lead by one point at the final change. It was a typical finals atmosphere in the third term, with both sides throwing everything at the contest and the coaches having to hold their nerve. Going into the final term, both sides’ supporters were nervous and one team was 25 minutes away from a date with St.Bernards. The message from both camps was along the same lines: do it for the jumper, do it for your teammates and leave nothing out there. It was hot early but the Old Xavs started to get clean ball in the middle and drive the ball forward to the powerful Sam Cleeve and Tom Wynne who were outstanding all day, kicking 3 and 4 goals respectively. Todd Vander Haar really 44

imposed himself on the contest and was the Xavs best player throughout the day and it was his ball use and poise under pressure that really shone. Beaumaris toiled hard right up until the final siren, but a miraculous goal from James Agius sealed the Old Xavs passage to the decider in a game that truly lived up to the finals hype. The Old Xaverians took the game by 28 points, however as the old cliché goes, the scoreboard did not reflect how closely the game truly was.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW Well, the stage is set; two teams, one game, the biggest of this season. It’s the day everybody plays football for. St. Bernards take on Old Xaverians at Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham in what will be a belter. I have no doubt the intensity will be through the roof and both teams’ grit and determination will be on show. Bernards looking to go back to back while the Old Xavs looking for their first premiership since 2012. It will be a real battle of the midfields, with the likes of Delzoppo, Hughes, Vague crucial if Bernards are to get the job done. They will also need the continued output from Sibbald and Considine, both of whom have stood up in big games this season. For the Xavs, it is up to Vander Haar, Morris, Troiani, Cleeve and Ongrato to ensure that Bernards don’t win the midfield battle. Each of them are ball winners with Ongrato being one of the most crucial down back trying to stop the Bernards forwards from getting on top. Their fadeout in the semi was a worrying aspect of their loss, however they will be confident in approaching this contest. It will be a cracking contest and a tough one as all grand finals are. The way I see it, the team who goes harder and stronger for longer will win it, and I cannot wait for that midfield battle. Old Xaverians by 4pts in one of the great Grand Finals of our time. SECTION TWO Caulfield Grammarians stunned premiership fancies Old Brighton on Saturday, winning by 52 points at Waverley Oval. Everything was going according to script at quarter time, with the Tonners holding a comfortable three goal buffer and seemingly dominating possession. The second quarter blitz by Caulfield was absolutely breathtaking as they turned a 19-point deficit into a 20-point half time lead in the blink of an eye. Old Brighton managed to wrestle back some momentum in the third quarter, but a nine goal to two final stanza blew the game open as Caulfield marched towards a grand final berth against a white hot Parkdale side. Harrison Mills was on fire, finishing the day with five majors to his name for the victors and claiming best afield honours. Hugh Hamilton toiled hard for Old Brighton but the usually industrious Jack Cowling was well held. It is a disappointing end to such a season that promised so much for Old Brighton, as they will have to lick their wounds and reload for next year.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW Parkdale v Caulfield Grammarians This week’s grand final promises to be a beauty. Parkdale has been the best side all year, peaking at the pointy end of the season to earn the week off after comfortably beating Old Brighton in the second semi final. Jack Vorbach has been sensational in the midfield all season and Caulfield will have to put some time into him if they are to be a chance in this one. For Caulfield, they have had a dream run to the grand final. A heart stopper in the semi final saw them scrape home against Fitzroy by a solitary point, and nobody saw them knocking out a strong Old Brighton squad in the preliminary final. They have match winners in their forward half, with Lachlan Topp second in the section goal kicking on 40 majors; Whilst Harry Schaffer has booted 16 goals from seven games. The match will be won or lost in the midfield, if Caulfield can get the ball going their way they have the fire power to do some damage. Verdict: Anything can happen in the big dance but I can’t go past the Vultures. Parkdale by 36 points. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

SECTION THREE Old Carey justified their favourites tag on Saturday, overpowering a listless Williamstown team by 53-points to book a spot in the grand final against Old Geelong. The match was effectively over at quarter time as the Panthers dominated all over the field, taking a 37-point lead into the first break. Williamstown managed to fight back in the second quarter but the damage has already been done and Old Carey regained control in the third and fourth quarters. Will Nicholls was best afield for the winners as he booted three and had a hand in various other scoring thrusts.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW Old Geelong v Old Carey Old Geelong enter Saturday’s grand final warm favourites, having beaten Old Carey in their previous meeting by 32-points. The Panthers did manage to secure the four points when the sides met in the early rounds of the season but that was a long, long time ago. For Old Carey, the key will be to get a contribution to the scoreboard from their midfield. Zander Adam has been a focal point in the forward line with 26 majors for the season and for the Panthers to have a shot he will have to fire. For Old Geelong, the key is Jock Grimshaw. The dynamic forward has booted 73 majors this season and has been in impeccable touch of late, booting five goals to sink Williamstown in the second semi final. They have been the best side all year and will be super confident of winning the cup on Saturday. Verdict: I expect Old Carey to stay with Old Geelong in the early stages but think they will get overpowered in the second half. Old Geelong by 24 points.

VAFA RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER PROGRAM In collaboration with major sponsor Sportscover, the VAFA worked with VRA to establish a pilot program whereby an invited number of clubs nominated a Risk Management Officer to be part of the program. VRA is a risk management and survey business contracted by Sportscover to conduct risk assessments on a number of their insured properties each year. Sportscover and the VAFA for 2015 decided that it a good time to better promote the need within clubs for an on-field and off-field environment that was as free of risk as possible. The following clubs chose to participate, and a cash prize of $1,000 was set aside to recognise the best performing club. Power House (RMO - Steve Devine), Therry Penola (Mark Prendergast), Ormond AFC (Steve Manning), Hampton Rovers (Dean Lovig), Old Haileyburians AFC (David Southgate), Old Trinity (Gil van der Venne), Mt Lilydale (Dave Holloway), St Bernards (John Raffles), St. Johns (Chris Swinburne), Hawthorn AFC (Peter Kennedy), South Melbourne District AFC (Adam Hilary), Old Mentonians (Peter Snyders), Canterbury (Sue Bach), West Brunswick AFC (Ben Lichtenstein), Old Brighton Grammarians FC (Shane Young), Fitzroy (Sharon Torney), AJAX ( Peter Kagan), Mazenod Old Collegians FC (Peter Hanley), Ivanhoe AFC (Jane Homewood), Chadstone FC (Peter Kostakos), Beaumaris AFC (John Murton), Old Xaverians AFC (Paul Lefebvre), Prahran Assumption FC (Stephen Zayler), Yarra Valley OBFC – 24 clubs Clubs attended a pre-season workshop and VRA presentation, had a free risk assessment conducted of the playing surface and surrounding areas of their club and were set a number of tasks requiring written responses. Clubs were also asked to show how they had followed up on the risk recommendations following their survey, and to also demonstrate that the club was regarding the RMO as an integral part of the club’s committee and management structure.

IT IS WITH PLEASURE THAT IT IS ANNOUNCED THAT CANTERBURY FC IS THE WINNER OF THE $1,000 CASH PRIZE. Sue Bach, Canterbury’s RMO, has been outstanding in responding to all the activities and tasks and she and her club are to be congratulated. Sue and Canterbury will be presented with their prize at this year’s AGM. All clubs will receive a Certificate of Participation for being involved in the 2015 program. Expressions of Interest will soon be sought for participation in a 2016 program. VRA congratulates the VAFA and Sportscover for being joint partners in this most beneficial program.

UHS-VU JOIN IVANHOE IN SEASON DECIDER In a fitting end to the Colts season, the top two teams will battle it out in the decider after UHS-VU Flemington beat La Trobe by 81 points on Sunday. After a slow start and no goals in the opening quarter, UHS-VU kicked seven unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead by 33 points at the main break. The third quarter was uneventful before UHS-VU rammed home eight majors in the last to make it an easy win. Mohamed kicked three goals, while Allen, Mallia and Craggill-Haren kicked two each. Patrick Carroll was again amongst the best for La Trobe, as he has been all season, but couldn’t lift his side to the victory.

U19 SECTION 4

UHS-VU will meet Ivanhoe in the decider next week, in what promises to been a tight contest. In their previous three meetings this season, Ivanhoe won by 22 points in the semi, by two points in round two, while UHS-VU won by 16 points in round 11. The possible match winners for each

ST KEVIN’S ROMPS INTO GRAND FINAL IN EMPHATIC STYLE The result was unexpected, given that Mazenod had previously breezed past all other opponents during the regular season, but St Kevins has booked its place in next week’s grand final by beating Mazenod by 131 points. St Kevins blitzed Mazenod from the start in every aspect, opening up a seven goal lead by half time. Lachlan Wray was on fire, kicking six goals while Anthony Ioannidis was playing a solid game. The lead was out to nine goals by the final change meaning the last quarter was just a formality as St Kevins rammed home 12 goals to rub salt in the wound. Dicintio and Burrill also played well for Skevs, kicking two goals each. In what is a disappointing end to a terrific season by Mazenod, regulars Jaydyn Hill and Jacob Murdock played hard till the end. UNDER 19 Section 4 Peninsula v St Kevins 54

team are: Myles Legudi and Spencer Craggill-Haren for UHS-VU while Max Post and Samuel Aanensen will be Ivanhoe’s go to men. My tip: Ivanhoe by 4. VAFA COLTS — TIPS IN BOLD Ivanhoe v UHS-VU

PROUD SPONSOR OF VAFA Peninsula has breezed past Northern Blues and into the grand final against St Kevins. Rarely troubled all year, Sunday was little more than a formality. Peninsula blew the game open with a nine goal third quarter to take the lead to 74 points at the final change. It was an uneventful last quarter with Peninsula eventually winning 105 to 34. Peninsula had five players that kicked two goals each while Phillip Boyle and Jim Feutrill were named best on ground. Peninsula will go into next week’s grand final as favourites after only dropping the one game all year. They have a team of even contributors meaning that St Kevins don’t have to worry about stopping one or two players, but all 18. St Kevin’s go into the game off a strong month, five victories in a row, three of them 100+ wins. One player that Peninsula needs to stop is Lachlan Wray who has kicked 12 goals in the last three games. My tip: Peninsula by 14. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

UMPIRES CORNER

@VAFAUA

There’s something different about finals football. Whether it’s the weather, the heightened expectations and emotions, or just the fact the crowds are bigger. It’s a great time of the year to be umpiring, as we see the best teams go head to head in the heat of battle and, for the most part, there’s no tomorrow for one side. So with finals in full swing, it was great to see Melbourne produce “Finals Weather” and the competition producing high quality football. Unfortunately for many of us, our seasons also ended on the weekend. For those who have now finished for the year, thank you for your work this season. It is an honour to get a finals match and you should be proud of your achievements. Remember to check your appointment carefully A lesson learned for young boundary umpire Jordan Roseblade this week, when he turned up to run the boundary at Garvey Oval in Bundoora on Saturday. Only problem, he was appointed to the Sunday game at the same venue. While many would say that it was good that he was twenty-four hours early for his match, as he arrived at 1:30, he was only twenty-three and half hours early so we’re saying that Jordan was technically late. So remember, we run on both Saturday and SUNDAY during finals time.

FIDA Grand Finals Earlier this season, we wrote about the work done by VAFAUA members during the AFL National Inclusion Carnival. FIDA is the league in Victoria where these players play and on Sunday the FIDA grand finals were held at Mazenod’s Central Reserve in Glen Waverly. Once again the VAFAUA were asked to supply umpires to these games and all umpires represented us brilliantly, allowing the sides to play some high quality football. Thank you to Merv Monty, Mark Gibson, Andrew Hartnett, Rob Parry, Pat Holmes and David Hindle for giving up Father’s Day and a well-earned day off to umpire the grand finals. It was also great to see VAFAUA legend Tim Sutcliffe running around. It’s fair to say that Tim has still got it! 56

For the record, Division 3 was won by Ferntree Gully, Division 2 by Coburg, Division 1 Reserves by Kananook and Division 1, also by Kananook. At the presentations, the umpires were acknowledged and thanked, and all received a memento as a reminder of their grand final appearance. For next year, all umpires are encouraged to get involved with FIDA and umpire at least one game. It is a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable experience and it is some of the most fun that you can have umpiring. Our work in these games is really appreciated, by the clubs, players and supporters, and the emphasis is clearly on fun for all. And now we get serious! This time of year, is where the coaches really earn their money, as they have to reduce the numbers every single week, as an example, last weekend there were 72 field umpires running around and this week that list is cut to 42! There will be disappointment, that’s the nature of the beast, and this year we have seen a really high level of umpiring by both experienced heads and some of the young guns who have come out of nowhere. For those of you reading this at your game, congratulations and enjoy everything that grand final day has to offer. If you have missed out, think of how far you have come this year and do your best to come back next year and make the coaches’ jobs even harder. Remember that by umpiring just one game this year you have been successful and shown courage that many in the football world wouldn’t be prepared to show.
