SEASON 2022 - APRIL 9

EDITORIAL George Voyage – VAFA President

It was great to have everyone back playing, umpiring, watching and socializing last weekend as our competition started for our VAFA 2022 Season. Hopefully we can enjoy a full season of on-field competition and off-field social interaction.

and through the establishment of VAFA Coterie groups, stabilizing and growing player participation numbers, expanding our digital and media and communications footprint and monitoring and assessing continually all of our policies of to name a few of such categories.

As a result of an active period over recent months we have several newly elected Board Members and new senior staff appointments who will all add vitality and acumen in the strategy and drive of the organization.

Whilst understanding the essential need to update and modernize and to implement a new constitution, this will be put on hold until the time is appropriate as we recognize that all our clubs are fully stretched in the near future with the season ahead and COVID causing uncertainty and havoc at all levels in our community and stretching our Board and Admin team resources.

Recently the current Governor of Victoria Her Excellency the Hon. Linda Dessau and the Federal Treasurer the Hon. Josh Frydenberg accepted our invitation to be the Patrons of the VAFA. I would like to also acknowledge the efforts and contributions of out-going and retiring Board members over the last 12 months in Nigel Credlin, Mick Overman, Peta Olive, Megan Taberner, Dean Matthews, Terry McEvoy and especially former Vice-President Mr. Adam Kirkwood-Scott and thank them for their service to the VAFA.

Whilst on COVID our Admin team have put together a very detailed COVID document for clubs. One only had to see the WCE line-up v North Melbourne to note that it is certain that COVID will have an impact during our 2022 season at every club. As a community we must follow the Government and Health Dept. rules at all times, but hopefully we will be prepared to adequately cover all challenges COVID presents.

A few updates from the Board. As a Board we want to be open, progressive, transparent and forthright as we develop our strategy, put the necessary structures in place and communicate to our people to implement these plans and objectives. Strategy, Structure, People.

It is important for communications to our Admin team to be cordial and respectful at all times as they are doing their utmost to maintain the competitions and the complexities to fixtures and outcomes which will be presented by COVID in the coming months.

The recent AGM election has resulted in 3 dynamic very experienced people of VAFA community background being elected to the board. The members have spoken clearly.

It is great to be back playing.

We will have a new standard or communication from both the board and administration.

Commercially, we recognize the loyalty and input of all of our partners but especially to William Buck, Community Bank East Malvern and Holmesglen Institute and say thanks to you for your ongoing support.

It is envisaged that regularly our Board meetings will be held at (interested) clubs and be open to surrounding clubs Presidents to attend as observers and participate in an “open session general business” as part of the agenda.

We have a new energised and dynamic board and Admin staff team with exciting and unique ideas to revitalise the VAFA on our return from COVID and to establish the platform to help achieve the hopes and aspirations of all our clubs and stakeholders. In this historic 130th year good luck to everyone in 2022.

The Board will be continuing the review of a whole range of categories such as affiliation fees, the key subject of umpire recruitment and retention, insurance, volunteers, infrastructure, increasing our VAFA revenue stream from non-club sources especially commercially, the future fund

YOUNG HEARTS, RUN FREE - PLAY THE KIDS Finally, after 245 days between games we got our scarves, our old coats because as Greg Champion famously sang we had a footy game to go.

The Blues opposition this weekend, St Bernard’s have presented its youngest playing list in 15 years, while the Snowdogs haven’t recruited the high-prized big names, they’ve got a brashness around the youth coming through that leaves Paul Groves feeling confident they’ll mix it with the best sides this season and already, down at the snakepit, they’ve taken many learnings away from the opening round loss to Old Xavs.

VAFA footy is on, it’s here again and for many across the competition it’s back to greet us like an old friend. Whilst the familiarities graced our presence on the weekend. Melbourne traffic and inconsistent weather, the stench of deep heat in the club rooms, heading out to the huddle for the coaches address, club luncheons and Premiership reunions.

Trackwatchers of the Snowdogs will take note of the batman and robin combination down in defence with Daniel Hannah and Ben Huggard.

On the field there were plenty of new looking faces, excitable young lads who when footy was last a constant, were running around in junior footy or under 19 level.

Through injury and necessity in 2021 Collegians were forced to dive into the depths of their list. Since his debut vs. Old Scotch last year, Josh Watson has looked right at home in the senior midfield, reminding us all of Ollie Wines, along with Daniel Orgill another strong bodied midfielder. Throw in Max Pinchbeck up forward, Matt Warren down in defence, and even Brayden Fleming (son of Damien) there’s a good crop of purple shoots sprouting at Harry Trott Oval.

Old Scotch, St Bernard’s, Old Trinity have all told VAFA. com.au in the lead up to round 1 there’s been a changing of the guard in their senior line ups, regeneration and the dawning of a new era. So much is often made about the headline recruits that join the VAFA each year and the experience that returns from AFL/VFL football. It’s worth highlighting over the opening round the changing faces that we’re sure all clubs will be pushing for higher honours as their senior careers progress.

They’ll take great confidence walking away with the points from Glenhuntly Oval and strutt into Wesley College this Saturday against Old Trinity with the aim to make it 2 in a row.

In the VAFA RSN Carnival Match of the Day there was a sense that Old Scotch, a team with 15 players under the age of 22 would stick with University Blues for a half of football, not many would have expected them to come storming home with 8 final quarter goals to pinch it at the death.

The Fields have told VAFA.com.au they’re very excited about the prospects of Ollie Lowe, in his senior debut kicked 2 goals in the first half and was lively forward of the centre. Jack Ellwood, won the under 19 best and fairest in 2021 is set to be playing a Jack Ginnivan style role as a small forward for the Fields.

This season, mark down the names Angus Symons (Round 1 rising star nominee), Tyler Sellers, Sam Seach, Max Bennett, Hugo Bromell, Jesse Castan all coming through the ranks under Mark Gnatt who will back his young troops every opportunity he gets.

You can expect Tommy Flanagan to sharpen up those vocal cords on the Caulfield live-stream when the ball gets in the vicinity of these 2 and we at VAFA media are expecting Jack to have a Go-Pro on hand when they make the trek to Elsternwick Park.

On the other side of the ledger, despite being “stacked” with AFL experience on Saturday and 7 goals to Sam Grimley. University Blues have hidden gems in Charlie Furphy, Lachie Gee, Joe Nagle and Eddie Ziebarth (2021 rising star nominee). Charlie Furphy nearly took the Blues to the line on the weekend and all 4 will soak up every piece of advice they can get from teammates who’ve experienced playing footy in the big time.

Old Xaverians and St Kevin’s, for all their headline recruits always find diamonds amongst their under 19 squads. Through 2021 and the opening round of this year, it’s no exception.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

From Toorak Park, Charlie MacIsaac has springs in his feet, and a lethal boot on him in the red and black, Jack Hewitt enjoys hunting the footy and James Langford featured in the best in his 3rd game of senior footy. 2

These 3 will come up against an Old Brighton side that is always full of confidence and brash youth when they take to the field, it was a shock to many seeing Nick Pavlou on the transfer list, the club took it in their stride as Greg Hutchison handed debuts to Jordan Segar and Tom Blamires, both hit the scoreboard and looked composed in their first outing. Last year St Kevin’s unveiled Luke Winter, Jack Darmody and Angus Hart (2021 Rising star nominee). Hart kicked 2 in the low-scoring win in Round 1, the “big-bird” will be one to watch when he comes up against Tom Ansell and Old Scotch this Saturday. One thing we know about Plugga Lynch, he is a developer of young men and they will relish playing their footy under one of St Kevin’s favourite sons. Old Melburnians have the brightest young star in the competition with Ed Nicholls, the 2021 Rising Star winner, despite the loss on the weekend he was named in the best and will relish the wide expanses of Elsternwick Park in his second year of senior footy, Paul Satterley is excited to also add Charlie McKay and Chance Doultree to his team in a more regular fashion this year. A complete off-season overhaul at Old Trinity has seen changes throughout the entire club, on-field George Belcher, Harris Mastras, Xavier Fry, Lachlan Mulcahy are all under the age of 22 as is Oliver Scott who Trinity fans know, if he’s anything like he’s older brother Anthony as the year goes on, the sky’s the limit for him. The youngsters of today are set to be the future of the VAFA in years to come, what we know about the kids is they generate excitement and passion, they play without fear, run on instinct and simply play for the love of the game. Something that we were reminded of over the opening weekend of footy, and will get to see every Saturday throughout this season.

Blacks start season in style as Haileybury make early statement Despite a dreary day in Melbourne making for some slippery hands, the stage was set for a highly anticipated opening round. The Uni blacks went to work to retain their crown in a convincing win against AJAX, while Haileybury proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with in their triumph over De La. Down at Fearon Reserve, CY’s pace and poise were too much in the end for the panthers. Lastly, The Sharks got the better of Fitzroy showing confidence and resolve, taking home a 5-point victory.

A little bit of push and shove at Princes Park saw Haileybury firmly stamp their mark on this season with De La Salle unable to get the redemption they desired. Struggling to get a firm grip on the game, De La conceded a 48-point loss to The Bloods. A fantastic effort from Jack Lonie and Sam Algeri kicking 4 and 3 respectively, as well as assertive run and carry from Brodie Steele in his 100 th game. Haileybury will have to shift this momentum onto the training track as they enter a round 2 bye and Easter break, hoping for a similar result against Old Carey in two weeks. For De La, it’s back to the drawing board as they prepare for a tough opponent in Uni Blacks.

The powerhouse that is the Uni Blacks started their season with an impressive victory over AJAX on their home turf. This one-sided affair saw the Blackers lead at every change. 9 players chimed in with goals and Nick Hey led the team with 3. For Josh Steadman, it was business as usual on Melbourne University Oval, working tirelessly in the middle. A notable performance from AJAX’s Ben Schauder who kicked 2 on debut. He was one of 5 players donning the red, white, and black for the first time in the senior side- a group to keep an eye on as the season progresses. The Uni Blacks will look to generate a streak in their next game against De La as AJAX hope to bounce back against the Roys in round 2.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The two youngsters of Premier B went head-to-head in round 1. This seesawing encounter had the lead change at each break. Despite Old Carey’s best efforts, it was Williamstown that took home the chocolates. With 11 different goal kickers, it is clear CY’s team-first mentality is paying dividends. A stellar effort from leader Tom Johnstone has started the season off on the front foot. In the coming round, Williamstown will take on the fresh legged St Bedes/Mentone, whose eyes would have been closely watching this knockout. Old Carey will hit the road again in round 2, taking on Beaumaris at Banksia Reserve.

2022 PREMIER B RESERVE MEN’S The stage was set at Brunswick Street Oval for the fight between The Sharks and The Roys. The strength of Beaumaris saw them prevail over Fitzroy, whose attempt to steal the win in the last quarter fell short. The endurance of Joel Di Natale and accuracy from Matthew Petering worked harmoniously for Beauy, helping them secure the four points. It was smiles all round for The Sharks as they celebrated the first senior game for key defensive player Liam Hayes and 100 for the hardworking James Taylor. The Roys will hope to replicate the pressure they created in the final term, in their next battle against AJAX, meanwhile The Sharks hope to swim home with another win against The Panthers.

Preston notch first Premier C victory as 2022 season gets underway Round one of the 2022 season has come and gone, with more of the same for last season’s top side. But round one will be remembered fondly by Preston Bullants as they registered their first victory in Premier C a long twelve months after entering the division.

The goalkicking coach at Old Ivanhoe might be in for a bit of work through the week after the round one clash at Keysborough. For whilst they were never seriously challenged by Old Mentonians after quarter time, they may not get away with such profligacy next time. The home side kicked three of the four goals in the first quarter, but Old Ivanhoe recovered to the point that they took the lead heading into half time. The Ivanhoe boys dominated the second half, but four goals 12 to three goals straight meant that Old Mentonians stayed at arm’s length. Old Ivanhoe will be happy with their performance around-the-ground, and will take that forward to next week. Sam Wilcox and Harrison Reid stood out for the victors, while Stuart Harris and Keiffer Smith-Cameron were the best for Old Mentonians.

Hampton Rovers kicked off their 2022 campaign in fine style with a stirring eight-goal victory over Marcellin at Boss James Reserve. Rovers finished the first term slightly in the ascendency after a tight opening, and continued in the same vein in the second quarter to lead by 16 points at the main break. It is in the third quarter that Rovers broke the game open, kicking six unanswered goals to lead by 53 points turning for home. The opening goal of the last term extended the margin to 59, and although Marcellin added some respectability to the scoreline by kicking five goals in the final quarter, it was too little, too late. Sam Clements and Ryan Fogarty led the way for Hampton, with Ben Marron keeping the scorers busy with four goals. Zac Tolley and Daniel di Paola worked hard for Marcellin, who will take the confidence from the final stanza into next week.

Preston Bullants spent 11 winless matches looking for victory in 2021, but it only took them one week this year as they prevailed in a fourth quarter wrestle over UHS-VU by a single point. It looked so rosy for the Preston boys as they went to the long break 31 points to the good, but they had not seen the back of the UHS-VU boys. They dominated the third quarter, but a return of four goals nine meant the difference between a commanding threequarter time lead and an even scoreline. The game could have gone either way, but with each side kicking three goals in the last quarter, it was the Bullants that came away victors by the barest possible margin. They had Ethan Lowe as an effective spearhead with five goals, and winners in Sean Battistello and Hugo Byron on the day. The University boys were best served by Pat Brookes (four goals), and Harrison Rocke.

Mazenod made the journey to EE Gunn Reserve looking to make a statement that they were there to be a real threat in 2022, but their hosts Ormond were way too good on the day. The Nodders started well enough kicking to the scoring end, but only two goals from seven shots to the scoring end meant only a five-point advantage at quarter time. Their poor accuracy extended into the second term whilst Ormond banged on six goals at the other end to lead by four goals at the half. Mazenod kicked three goals to two in the third term to be within striking distance at the final change, but Ormond were clinical, kicking six goals in the last quarter without reply to score by 54 points. The difference was Tom Buckley, finishing with seven goals for the victors, with Zach Benson and Joseph Nowell amongst their best. Nick Pascuzzi, with three goals, and Simon Hall were good for Mazenod.

The two pre-eminent sides of 2021, Monash Blues and Old Geelong, squared off in the first meeting of 2022. And as with last year it was the Monash boys that prevailed, doubling Old Geelong’s score in a dominant display. After kicking three goals to two in the first quarter, Monash really began to assert their authority to lead by 26 points at the main break. Old Geelong kicked to the scoring end in the third quarter and kept Monash to three points, but unfortunately were only able to land a single goal themselves. Monash took a 20-point lead into the final term and were able to score five goals to two in the home straight to register a seven goal win, thereby marking themselves as the early premiership favourites. Joe Harrison opened his season with three goals, and Daniel Easson and Nick Argento were best for the victors. Connor Dixon kicked three for Old Geelong, with Jack Sheridan and Sam Hooper in their best. Parkdale Vultures bye

Certificate of Merit awardees recognised at Season Launch The VAFA is pleased to announce seven 2022 Certificate of Merit awardees, each of whom have been recognised for their outstanding service to the VAFA and their clubs. Russell Barnes (Ormond), Richard “Titch” Callanan (St Kevin’s), David Veal (Old Ivanhoe), George Wakim (Preston), Warwick Watson (Caulfield), Gary “Lumpy” Rosewarne (Elsternwick AFC) and Gary Nash (Hampton Rovers) were recognised at the event, with Gary responding on behalf of all recipients. The 2022 VAFA William Buck Season Launch was held at Crown on the Wednesday prior to round one, with more than 250 people in attendance. The night was headlined by the appearance of four-time Hawthorn Premiership coach Alistair Clarkson, who has come on board as an ambassador with Tackle Your Feelings. Clarko held the room with much of the discussion around the importance of sport, and in particular local football clubs and the role they play in supporting the community.

Streaks broken: Preston in Premier C Men’s and Brunswick in Division 2 Men’s Preston Bullants spent 11 winless matches looking for victory in 2021, but it only took them one week this year as they prevailed in a fourth quarter wrestle over UHS-VU by a single point – marking the first win for Preston in 931 days. Coach George Cotsonis was overjoyed after the game “There were a few tears after the game, it’s been three years without a win, after COVID and everything just came together to be an emotional moment.” It had been 938 days since Brunswick last tasted success, the Division 2 preliminary final of 2019. Despite the inaccuracy in front of goal they were able to bust the game open with 7 goals to 2 over the Cobras in the second term and didn’t seem troubled from there. Coach Tommy Hunter would’ve enjoyed sitting back on Saturday night getting his first taste of success in the VAFA. He won’t be resting on his laurels as the aim will be to back up that performance this weekend against Power House to make it 2 from 2.

Fitzroy women’s song signals another step towards equality in football 70 years after the Fitzroy Football Club’s famous old theme song was first penned, the club will write another page in its illustrious history when the Roy Girls run out onto the Brunswick Street Oval to the strains of their own version of the song in Season 2022. With the help of his teammates, Fitzroy Football Club champion, Bill Stephen, came up with the original version of the famous Fitzroy theme song on an end-of-season football trip to Perth in 1952. Line by line, the players on the trip contributed to the words set to the tune of La Marseillaise. “Everyone loves the Fitzroy song,” says club Vice-President Gabrielle Murphy. “And every time our senior players run out to it at our historic home at Brunswick Street, Fitzroy hearts are stirred, and opposition players and supporters stopped in their tracks. “The problem being, of course, that when our Women’s team ran out to the song, they had to sing that ‘we are the boys from old Fitzroy’.” “With the new version of the song, one that so faithfully echoes the old version, that’s no longer the case. “We’re all so happy about that.” 9

Peninsula - Shaun Payze and his son Old Peninsula legend Shaun Payze may remember 2022’s Round 1 even more fondly than 2021’s season opener. 12 months ago Payze was lining up for his 400th game, after having to wait over a year being stranded on 399 due to the cancelled 2020 season. On Saturday, Payze played alongside his son Bailey against PEGS in Division 1 which adds even more romance to the game’s famous father/son rule. Last year Beaumaris had the Lucas boys and father Terry play in the thirds. For the record it was Bailey who finished with 2 goals. PEGS walked away with the points, but it was a day to remember nonetheless.

St Bernard’s - Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 2002 Premiership The Snowdogs shocked many when they upset Old Xav’s in the 2002 VAFA Premier Grand Final. Against the odds, they were up against it even further the night before when captain Nick Mitchell went down at training with a hamstring tear. A young Danny Byrne stepped up and had the game of his life to stop the red and black dominance. He himself couldn’t be beaten on his way to the Jock Nelson Medal. In a high-scoring affair St Bernard’s 20.15.135 def. Old Xav’s 15.14.104 to claim their second A-Grade Premiership On Saturday, members of the team were there to recognise the club’s fine achievement. Back row: Anthony Thomas, Simon Clarke, Luke O’Sullivan, Liam Wilkinson, Damien McLauglin Middle Row: Dave Micallef, Ben Loughlin, Danny Byrne, Ben Hogan, Tim Harvey, Sam Taylor Front Row: Peter Nicholson, Keith Goulett, Ben Jordan Absent: Dan Jordan, Nick Smith, Nick Mitchell, Joe Mount, Luke Turnball, Chris Mitchell, Sean Neeson, Cameron Trewin, Lucas Fielding, David James, Rhodes Cousland, Brian Ashton

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Tayla Jones (Hampton Rovers) Congratulations to Hampton Rovers’ Tayla Jones on being nominated as the Round 1 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nominee. Tayla kicked two goals in a best on ground performance in the Rovers’ 51-point win over Power House. What the club said: Last year, the Rovers celebrated a significant milestone when Tayla Jones became the first women’s player to progress from Auskick (in 2011) through to Seniors at the club. She also played for the Sandringham Dragons in 2020-2022, the U17 Vic Metro team in 2021 and is also an assistant coach for the Rovers U16 girls since last year. Tayla played a great game on Saturday and was a unanimous best on ground from all the coaches. She kicked two goals playing on the wing and had five goal assists. Tay is an integral part of the Rovers women’s team as they continue to go from strength to strength.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee Angus Symons (Old Scotch) The VAFA congratulates the first Men’s Rising Star nominee of 2022 – Angus Symons from Old Scotch. On debut, Angus played in the forward line and kicked a goal in Scotch’s first round win over Uni Blues. What the club said: Angus Symons is 18 years old, in his first year out of Scotch College (2021 graduate), playing last year in the College’s 1st XVIII. Angus played 117 games of junior football for Glen Iris Gladiators in the Yarra Junior Football League from 2011 to 2019. He joined the Cardinals this year and has earned his spot in the Men’s 1st XVIIII for Round 1. Angus is a dynamic small forward who impacts on the scoreboard. We believe Angus has a great future at VAFA Men’s Premier ‘A’ level and higher.

Floodgates open as 2022 Division 1 season begins Rising from Division 2, Glen Eira was always going to be an interesting round 1 game, just in terms of seeing whether they can match it and when put up against Prahran Assumption it was a great baptism of fire to test it. Out at Toorak Park, Prahran was able to keep Glen Eira scoreless in the first but didn’t last too long with it all tied up heading into half time. A big scoring third quarter and with the boys run off their feet considering it was a thirty-six minute quarter meant that the 1 goal advantage for Glen Eira meant the fitter team in the last would get the chocolates, resulting in the gut running midfield lead by Xavier Verdnick would do enough to run out 13 point winners in their division 1 debut. It’s important to note Prahran Assumption were fourth place finishers in the league for 2021, so these will be two teams to watch

Well, what a time for footy to be back in action! In classic Melbourne fashion the floodgates opened in the early afternoon for some classic wet weather footy, but it didn’t seem to affect some of the high scoring and high soaring teams here in Division 1, so let’s get stuck into it. Let’s kick things off with one of two demolitions here to begin the year in Division 1, with the class of Old Camberwell showing through with a thumping 100-point win against St Mary’s Salesians out at the famous Gordon Barnard Reserve. As I said in the pre-season write up, this Old Camberwell team are the Coupe Degras of the competition and picked up right where they left off last year, and it’s important to note they did it without the LS Pepper Medalist in Riley Verbi. It was a goal scoring frenzy from the Wellers with five men kicking multiples, the best of the lot being Ben Hart also claiming the BOG status for the round one clash. A lot to be happy about for Old Camberwell and a bit to reflect on for St Mary’s, but the positive to take away fromit all is that it’s only round one, and can only be up from here!

This is the second of the two demolitions for the opening round as Kew took on Therry Penola down at Victoria Park to kick things off. You hear a lot about hot starts and how much they can set the tone for a game, and with a 44 point opening quarter it was safe to say the game was going to be at the Mercy of this Kew outfit lead by an eventual four goal haul from Lachie James. Therry Penola fought hard keeping Kew to only 1 goal for the second term andwent into the half 20 points down, but the class of Kew and their 9 goal final term just showed that they truly are a force to be reckoned with, eventually running away with the four points as 74 point winners to kick off their 2022 campaign.

We have to turn our attention now to the game of the round I was super intrigued with PEGS taking on Old Peninsula given I called Pegs the big danger team of the competition, and they showed why. Taking the scalp of Peninsula by a solid 61 point margin, this Pegs team kept the theme of high scoring football with nine different feet sinking through 6 points or more, just showing that scoring is never going to be the issue of the year but more so keeping this type of consistency. It’s a hard slog up against Pegs Let alone the men from the Peninsula tracking down the notoriously windy Pegs Sporting ground - there was some spark in the last with three straight majors, but just seems to be the issues of defense the sidehad last year might haunt them again in 2022, but I’m happy to be wrong! Our final game of the round was always going to be the hardest to tip and the hardest tocall, and it absolutely did not disappoint between Whitefriars and Oakleigh down at Whitefriars College oval. This was a huge upset if you run the data of the 2021 season with the Friars only losing 1 game and sitting second on the table, with the flip side of that being the 9 loss Oakleigh sitting at second last. I said it in the pre-season if Oakleigh could get some defenders they would become a team to be scared off, and that’s exactly what’s happened withAaron Cloak doing his part with 5 majors, and Oakleigh able to defend well enough to sneak home as 7 point winners. In the end the win did not come easy, heading into the last 30 points up and only managing to hold on to win by 7, the 6 goal haul from Whitefriars showed the fight of why they were second on the table last year… but back to the drawing board for round 2 to figure out what went wrong and what to improve.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

Throw out the pre-season script for Division 2 in 2022, it’s already been turned on its head! Despite the wet conditions across the day in Melbourne, Saturday night seemed to be prime time for the home side and for captain/coach Ash Close who banged home 7 goals in an inspired performance! There’s even some reports around that the coach may have produced some Jeremy Howe hangtime and hovered above the ground with a mark of the year contender.

Close finishes, drought breaking victories and footy under lights is what graced our Division 2 clubs over the weekend. It had been 938 days since Brunswick last tasted success, the Division 2 preliminary final of 2019. And finally, to open this season, they’re back on the winners list!

Of course, the Hoers put in this performance without the high-prized recruit Scott Selwood who was at the MCG for the evening watching his brother Joel create history of his own for the Cats.

Last year VAFA.com.au highlighted the final round win from Bulleen Templestowe over Yarra Old Grammarians and the confidence the club will take out of that. Despite there being 245 days between games, they’ve now made it 2 in a row with a 34 point win over Power House.

He won’t be resting on his laurels as the aim will be to back up that performance this weekend against Power House to make it 2 from 2. The Cobras will lick their wounds and we can expect a stronger showing this weekend as they host Old Parade at Koonung Park. Melbourne High School Old Boys continued where they left off in 2021 with a comfortable 76 point win over Yarra Old Grammarians. With 1 goal apiece in the opening term, 13 goals to 3 from there on set up the victory for the D2 favourites. Last season’s leading goalkicker Ashan Wijayakumara found his way to 3 goals, while Michael Scott, in his return to the club, kicked 3 of the 4 majors for Yarra Old. We’ll be keeping an eye on the scoring prowess of MHSOB who kicked over 100 points on 5 occasions in 2021. They’re 1 from 1 to start 2022. Expect the clamps to be applied this weekend when Ivanhoe AFC line up against them. The Hoers themselves will be content with the way they’ve opened the season keeping Old Parade goalless for the opening 3 quarters, and only 2 goals for the match.

2022 DIVISION 2 MEN’S Aquinas 0.2 4.6 5.8 6.11 (47) West Brunswick 2.2 4.5 5.10 5.12 (42) GOALS: Aquinas: B. O’Loughlin 2, M. Di Donato 2, J. Robertson 1, D. Foley 1 West Brunswick: T. Cottrell 2, H. The Ants were in the box seat at 3 quarter time with a 15 point lead, and kept Power House goalless in the final term while kicking 3 goals of their own to walk away with the points. Nadi Hamzovski, Josh Ferraina and Jack Cowell all kicked 2 apiece in the victory. They will see themselves as a genuine chance against Aquinas this weekend while Power House head to Alec Gillon Oval with the aim of stopping the Brunswick win count at 1. The final game of the opening round was the close one, the classic that saw Aquinas victorious by 5 points over West Brunswick In a tight see-sawing contest the lead changed hands at the end of each quarter with Aquinas finishing the better. Trailing by just 2 points at 3 quarter time, they kicked the only goal of the final quarter to seal the victory and snatch the points away from the Magpies. Michael Di Donato and Billy O’Loughlin kicked 2 majors each for the home side. While Tommy Cottrell kicked 2 for West Brunswick. It’ll be a hum-dinger of a contest at Aquinas College this Saturday as they host Bulleen Templestowe. The last time these sides met in 2021 Aquinas walked away with a 2 point victory. For West Brunswick, they’re back at home on Ransford Oval against Yarra Old Grammarians and will be hoping to write the wrongs of the weekend.

Promoted Elsternwick and South Melbourne open Div 3 season with wins Canterbury led at every break to run out 20-point winners against Emmaus St Leo’s at Bennettswood Reserve. The Melbourne rain tumbled down with very few reprieves, making goals hard to come by for both teams. Despite a valiant effort from Nathan Bird (3), the Animals never really gained their footing even as they kept close enough on the scoreboard, but it appeared the Cobras outfit was built for speed, increasing the points buffer every chance they got while their opponents could only watch on. Ryan Murray kicked five goals for Canterbury to be apart of their best-on, but it was Michael Topp who Topp-ed the list. For the home side, Ethan Phillips was their best.

Misty rain and what appeared to be a command from the footy gods themselves descended from the heavens on Saturday, leaving most Division 3 Men’s teams unable to buy a goal, let alone kick one. Out of 186 scoring shots, 112 of those were behinds, with some of them arguably the difference between a win and a loss. Divisional-newcomers Elsternwick and South Melbourne Districts both registered their first wins in their new home, while both Emmaus St Leo’s and Hawthorn will be left to rue some early opportunities gone begging to get on the winner’s list. South Melbourne Districts have already made themselves well at home in Division 3 Men’s after knocking off the 2021 minor premiers in Hawthorn by eight points. The Hawks got off to a nice start, kicking the first three goals of the game but greatly stalled after the first quarter, only registering 1.12 for the remaining three. The Bloods got three goals on the board in the second term to steady the ship, before seemingly running away with it in a tough day for scoring. Oliver Dufficy (3) had his goalkicking boots on to star for South Melbourne Districts, while aptlynamed Charlie Boots was Hawthorn’s best.

Not one to be outdone, Elsternwick have also found a nice home in Division 3 Men’s after taking down the Westbourne Grammarians by 111 points at Holmes Todd Oval. An eight-goal first term already gave the Wickers a seemingly insurmountable lead, but they didn’t stop there, finishing the game 23.24 to leave the Warriors with some soul-searching to do. Matt Ball (7) has already taken an incredible lead on the divisional goalkicking tally with his best-on performance, while Sean Gibson (3) and David Convery (3) were only part of the ten individual goalkickers Elsternwick had on the day. Performing well in his first game for the club was Michael Szulc, who kicked three for the Westbourne Grammarians.

A four-goal second quarter set up Richmond Central’s first win of the season, downing North Brunswick at Allard Park by 19 points. It was an even contest at the first break before the Snakes kept the Bulls to just three behinds to go into half-time with a 26-point buffer. In the end, a late fourth-quarter, four-goal surge couldn’t get the home side over the line. In his first game for the club, Justin Perillo (3) was Richmond Central’s best in front of goal while Dane Roy (2) rode shotgun. For North Brunswick, Tim Liston kicked two majors as Cameron Lee took top honours on the best-on list. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

For their second home game in a row, Emmaus St Leo’s will welcome Hawthorn to Bennettswood Reserve. Both teams will be on the hunt for a win on the board after suffering arguably unexpected losses in round one. Canterbury’s first home game of the year is against North Brunswick at Canterbury Sportsground, with the Cobras hoping to continue their round-one form to start the season off 2-0. The Bulls will be looking to rebound quickly to notch their first win. Both were winners in round one but only one team will be left standing when Elsternwick makes the trek to Kevin Bartlett Reserve for their second game of the year to take on Richmond Central. It couldn’t have been scripted better as both sides currently sit on first and second on the ladder. With an extra week off than the rest of the division, Parkside will be well-rested as they welcome the Westbourne Grammarians to Pitcher Park. The Red Devils had quite the opposite weekend compared to the Warriors, who suffered an unfortunate 100+ point loss.

La Trobe wins the rumble in the Jungle as Razorbacks send a warning to the competition Masala welcomed La Trobe to North Dandenong in what was tipped to be a great match between the two teams. The early rain of the game halted before the end of the first half when Masala went into the break leading by a point. Inaccurate kicking in the fourth almost cost La Trobe in the end however stormed home kicking 2 unanswered goals and holding off a late Masala push leading to an 89-77 win for La Trobe. Team of the year forward Declan Fowler continued where he left off for Masala kicking 6 majors. Tom Williamson was judged best on field for the Tigers for his work in the midfield. For La Trobe, Lachlan Webb and Bryce Dowler kicked 3 goals each and Riley Alexander kicked 2.

Round 1 was the return for football many were waiting for and after 245 days, proved to be an exciting round. Two of the three games went right down to the wire whilst one team has already put themselves in front as the team to beat in 2022. Elgar Park played host to the round one matchup between Box Hill North and Eley Park and with the rain came the nature of a tough and fairly low-scoring game. The game started off extremely close before Box Hill gained an edge to go up by two goals at halftime. Eley Park however kicked back in the final half, taking over the scoreboard kicking 6 goals to Box Hills’ 3 in the second half and winning the game 57-43. Jordan Gasparini (Box Hill North), Andrew Yeo (Eley Park) and Jesiah McGarvie (Eley Park) led the scoreboard with two goals each. The Eley Park duo were best on field for the Sharks whilst Cameron Liston and David Edwards were the best for the Demons.

Masala faces potentially the toughest test of the season as they head to Hawthorn to take on the Razorbacks who are coming off a dominant win. La Trobe will make the trip down to Box Hill as they look to go 2-0, a feat they achieved in the 2021 season.

Box Hill North will now try to rebound as they come up against the 1-0 La Trobe whilst the Sharks face St Johns at home with the aim of going 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2019.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

In the final game of the round, Swinburne faced Albert Park in what would be a good measuring stick for both opponents. The game started off fairly even with the Razorbacks leading 17-13 at quarter-time. However, the second quarter marked the beginning of the end for the Falcons as Swinburne kicked 6 goals to Albert Parks 1 in the second to lead by 38 at half-time. Swinburne kept the scoreboard pressure on all game running out winners 112-34 in what was an early warning to the rest of the competition. Benjamin Cox was the star of the day for the Razorbacks after kicking 5. Zachary Lassey and Glen Lovett were also key players for Swinburne. For the Falcons, Enver Krasnic was the only multiple goal scorer with two goals. Mackenzie Hyder and Jack Lee were among the best for Albert Park.

MILESTONES

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Hayden Bass (Glen Eira Gryphons)

50

Hayden was the star of the show kicking 4 goals in 2018 Old McKinnon/Glen Eira U19s Grand Final winning Premiership side. Always striving for perfection, Bassy is one of the hardest trainers at the club and has transitioned into a genuine utility player at Senior level. We look forward to Bassy lighting up Packer Park for the Gryphs for the next 10 years. Jack Richardson (Glen Eira Gryphons)

50

Jack was a member of the 2018 Old McKinnon/Glen Eira U19s Premiership side and has moving seamlessly into the Senior team taking everything in his stride. Blessed with blistering speed and boundless courage, Jack has been around the Senior team for almost 10 years, starting as a water carrier. We look forward to many more years of top class footy from Jack at the Gryphs. Scott McLeod-Dryden (Glen Eira Gryphons)

100

Big Scotty, what an absolute stalwart at the Glen Eira Saints and now the Gryphons you’ve been! Kudos on reaching such an important milestone. Enjoy the day big fella, you couldn’t pick a better day to notch up the ton with our past players function on during the day. Chris Hughes (St Bernards)

100

Congrats to Chris Hughes who lines up for his 100th Senior game this week. Chris progressed through Under 19 ranks before making his senior debut in round 16, 2014 and was a member of the 2018 Premier B Premiership team. Chris’s ability to read the play along with his strong marking has enabled him to be an integral part of the Senior side both in attack and defence. Well done Chris! Todd Richardson (Glen Eira Gryphons)

150

Todd was a member of the 2016 Division 3 Premiership team, Captain of the 2018 Division 3 Premiership team and Captain of the 2021 team that won the Division 2 Minor Premiers. A two-time club Best and Fairest winner, there is little that Todd has not achieved already in an illustrious career. A much loved character off the field, Todd has been an integral part of the success the Gryphons have achieved over the last 5 seasons. Joe Mazzocca (Ivanhoe Amateurs)

150

Ivanhoe Amateurs salutes evergreen reserves utility Joe Mazzocca on his 250th game for the club in Round 1. A ruckman in his school days, Joe played in the 1988 Herald Shield Collingwood zone final. Joe joined ex-schoolmates at Ivanhoe Park in 1998 and has now become only the seventh player in the club’s history to reach the 250-game milestone. He earned the nickname Iron Fist as a hard-working and disciplined defender who could be counted on to spoil in a one-on-one contest. In recent years, this dedicated clubman and life member has regularly volunteered to help out on match days, whether it be running boundary, water, the scoreboard, or goal umpiring. And whenever the ressies were struggling for numbers, Joe could be counted on to dust off his #69 jumper and run out the game. Last season, he was the toast of the club after kicking only his second-ever goal for the Hoers. And in Round 1 this season, Joe turned back the clock with a vintage performance, which included an early mark and nearly snagging his third-ever goal, earning him best-on ground. Congratulations Joe. A great achievement for a fantastic Ivanhoe person.

VAFA WOMEN’S REPORT Kristin Louise

Kew dominate T’s as Melbourne Uni look right at home It was a mixed round to start off the competition, Kew were dominant against Trinity with a massive win. Melbourne Uni looked right at home in the premier division, coming out on top of Old Xaverians. West Brunswick were strong in defence but were unable to push offensively to overcome St Kevin’s. Caulfield Grammarians picked up where they left off last year to keep St Mary’s scoreless once again.

continued on the same path as the whole game and the ball went end to end but no team was able to hit the scoreboard and Melbourne Uni came out winners by 6 points. St Kevin’s coming off a strong season last year, they were looking good early on and controlled a lot of the play with multiple forward entries early on to put pressure on West Brunswick. Making the most of their opportunities St Kevin’s opened the scoring in the match to lead in the first quarter 2 goals 6 behinds. West Brunswick wasted no time in the second quarter and took advantage of the wind scoring early on. St Kevin’s stepped up to take back some of the possession and scored a great team goal later in the quarter. It was the accuracy of West Brunswick that kept them in the game at half time. The third quarter saw St Kevin’s get back to their strong offensive display early on but it was some slick footwork out of the ruck that got them their 1 goal for the quarter. The West Brunswick defence withstood the multiple forward entries and didn’t let the rain get in the way of their strong marking. Unfortunately for West Brunswick they were unable to bring a strong offensive pressure to the game and with St Kevin’s scoring another goal in the last quarter they took the game out 5.9.39 to West Brunswick 2.1.13

Kew were strong from the first siren, taking the ball in the first clearance and getting it straight into their forward line. This would be the story for the first quarter, where Kew were able to lock the ball into their front half and dominate the possession for the quarter. It was a tale that would continue for much of the first half of the game. In the third quarter, Old Trinity seemed to gel together a bit more and took control of the possession for the early half. Trying to capitalise on having the wind Trinity had a few shots at goal, but were unable to make an impact on the scoreboard. It was a better quarter overall for Trinity though with them tightening up on Kew and putting on some pressure acts, and moving the ball across the ground more than earlier in the game. The last quarter followed the trend of the first half and once Kew got the ball in their forward line it spent majority of the time down that end of the ground. Kew came out 93 point winners, a great debut for Jess Burger as new head coach.

It is year 2 of the rebuild for St Mary’s and they had to start the year off against the strong Caulfield Grammarians side who kept them scoreless previously. Caulfield were as tenacious as they were in the previous match up seeing them keep St Mary’s scoreless once again. St Mary’s had some patches throughout the game where they had some good ball movement but the strong pressure of Caulfield forced errors and they were unable to convert onto the scoreboard. Caulfield were dangerous with the ball for the whole game and St Mary’s were unable to match them in the one on one aspect of the game. It was a one sided contest for much of the game, with St Mary’s still working to bond together as a team. Caulfield on the other hand have shown in the first round why they made it to the prelim last season and that they will be pushing towards that again.

Melbourne Uni came into the Premier division this season and did not look out of place at all. From the first bounce they were able to match Old Xaverians in a game that could only be described as an old-fashioned arm wrestle. The two teams traded possession in the first quarter but neither were really able to make an impact on the scoreboard with Melbourne Uni managing to get 2 behinds on the board. Old Xaverians came out firing in the second and overtook the play early on, tying the game in the first few minutes and intercepting play from Melbourne Uni. Breaking the drought 7 minutes into the quarter, Old Xaverians were the first to score a goal but Melbourne Uni responded with a quick return. After halftime the game broke open somewhat and both teams continued to trade goals and scored another 2 each. The final quarter THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
