SEASON 2022
APRIL 23
EDITORIAL George Voyage – VAFA President
Manager, Football & Umpiring, and a member of the VAFA Senior Management Team since 2018. Sam departs the VAFA to take up the new position with AFL Victoria.
Welcome back to everyone from the Easter break, it was nice to whet the appetite with VAFA football in the opening 2 rounds, and now we have the opportunity to put together a great block of games with the focus on-field and our clubs in the lead up to the Queen’s Birthday weekend.
Brett and Sam contributed significantly to the VAFA at all levels, and both played pivotal roles in managing the VAFA football department in a COVID-19 environment.
The VAFA Board will be around as many venues as possible each round as part of the engagement drive with all stakeholders. Feedback on game day is welcome. Off the field in the last fortnight, the VAFA has seen the departure of two key, long-standing members from the VAFA administration team. On behalf of the whole VAFA community, I wish to acknowledge and thank outgoing CEO Brett Connell, and also Football & Umpiring Operations General Manager Sam Confait for the contribution and efforts both have made to the VAFA over recent years.
It is this ongoing legacy that Brett, Sam and many others have provided us with our biggest asset, our enduring culture. The VAFA community wishes Brett and Sam all the best in their future endeavours and will always be welcome to any VAFA event.
Brett and Sam contributed significantly to the VAFA at all levels
When football resumes on Saturday, it is duly noted the significance of playing the game across this Anzac weekend. We mustn’t forget the important role the VAFA plays in defining ourselves both in the community and as a nation.
In the lead up to ANZAC Day, we remember and honour the thousands of VAFA members, players and their family members who sacrificed their lives to give us our freedoms today.
Brett was a star player, leader and multiple premiership winner with Ormond AFC. He was a champion Big V representative and a pivotal member of our competition’s highest honour, before starting his administration career at the VAFA.
ANZAC ceremonies in conjunction with RSL Clubs are being held at many VAFA venues this weekend. It is a time for reflection and to acknowledge the sacrifices of the servicemen and women of Australia and the part so many of our VAFA community have played.
Brett’s administrative journey has seen him head to AFL Victoria where he was a senior executive focusing on Country Football before returning to the VAFA as CEO, a role he held since 2018.
Australian Rules Football has been a driving force in commemorating and remembering our fallen comrades, across this weekend, we will remember them.
Sam joined the VAFA administration team in March 2014, was promoted to Football Operations Manager in 2016, and has been in his current position as General

GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES AHEAD OF ROUND 3 As Brian Waldron reminds me weekly and will no doubt continue to say on the VAFA Podcast, it’s far too early to be making bold predictions after three rounds. However, it’s interesting to note that at 5pm on Saturday, three teams - St Kevin’s, Old Brighton and Collegians - could be 3-0.
different Skobs outfit, Plugga Lynch knows all about the importance of stringing early wins together in a William Buck Premier season. St Kevin’s didn’t have the opportunity to meet Caulfield Grammarians in 2021, you need to go back to August 22, 2015 (2,436 days) since they last played against one another. Cal Matheson, Connor Ross and Will Barker were part of the action that day but that’s about as far as the links back into the history books go.
This is a form line (from the previous three completed seasons) that puts teams in the same position as St Kevin’s OB of 2017, 2018 and Uni Blues of 2019, all of which played off in the Grand Final and won the William Buck Premier Men’s title.
The Fields have been slow to start 2022, much like 2021. No doubt there’ll have been some added focus on goalkicking down at Glenhuntly Oval over the Easter break and we’ll see a more accurate Caulfield take to the field.
Despite these very early numerical advantages on the ladder and the argument that “stats don’t lie”, what we’ve seen from the opening two rounds of the 2022 season, the competition is already tighter and more contested than in recent years.
It took to Round 4 for the Fields to break the William Buck Premier duck in 2021, with Julian Dobosz on song in front of goal they’ll definitely get enough looks at goal to kick a winning score. However, continuing the theme of 2021 for this encounter, St Kevin’s defence is an impenetrable brick wall, with neither OM’s or Old Scotch able to kick 50 points in the opening 2 rounds.
Five of the opening 10 games have been decided by three goals or less (with the biggest margin being 50 points in Round 1). No team has kicked over 100 points. In comparison to Round 2, 2021, five times a team had scored 100+ and two games from 10 were decided by less than seven points with Old Xaverians the clear standout ahead of the rest.
Collegians have been the surprise of the 3 sides so far to be sitting 2-0 to start the year, after the year from hell in 2021 they walk into this match primed and ready for action, against Old Scotch, a side they’ve beaten in their past 4 encounters.
Round 3 is fascinating with many twists, turns and changes to all the data we’re about to spit out for your perusing! University Blues know the position Old Brighton could find themselves in on Saturday night. The Tonners are one of the form-sides going into their clash, coming off a win for the ages against Old Xaverians, they meet the 2019 premiers with a full head of confidence having won both encounters last year by 46 and 42 points.
In what will be the first game at Harry Trott oval this weekend, momentum is the most important thing to obtain in the modern game and they enter Saturday coming off a 7-goal final term in Round 2. The Old Scotch defence had their hands full with Sam Grimley in round 1, coach Mark Gnatt may have had a few sleepless nights this week working out how they’re going to combat co-captain Dave Mirra who is arguably the best player in the competition.
For those heading bayside it will be fascinating to see how Petrus Olivier and Elliot Le Grice back up their performance against Ayce Cordy at ruck battles in the absence of Lachie Filipovic. You can also keep an eye on how Brighton go about curtailing the influence of Sam Grimley in the Uni forward line? (12 goals from 2 games).
Will the experience of Jelbart and Franetic get Scotch over the line or can Jared Rivers rally the purple army and get his troops to a 3-0 start?
Speaking of goals, in 2021 the red and blue were the #1 side for outscoring opponents in the final quarter, Blues were one of the sides to feel the wrath of that momentum, if it happens again this weekend, it will leave Brighton fans thinking of the AFL version of the red and the blue in last year’s Grand Final.
At the other end of the table, St Bernard’s and Old Trinity are staring at a 0-3 start and for one of these sides that’s the stark reality when they face off. Anzac weekend is a special weekend at the Snowdogs with the club placing great emphasis on the importance and significance of the weekend.
2017 and 2018 saw St Kevin’s start the year 3-0, going on to win back to back Premierships, while this is a completely THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

From a results point of view across this particular weekend, St Bernard’s are 6-1 since 2014 and playing the wide expanses of the Snakepit will work in their favour. The relatively young sides are both finding their feet as they go through a regeneration phase of playing lists and coming to terms with the most effective way to play their footy. The battle of the young rucks Zac O’Halloran vs. Harry Thompson is the obvious pick of the match-ups to be watching from the moment the first bounce takes place. Old Xaverians and Old Melburnians sit 1-1 on the ladder, there may be more interest in the narrative off the field in the build up with OM’s coach Paul Satterley coming up against his old side for the first time since he last coached them in 2019. When the ball is bounced, none of that matters as Melburnians will do all they can to stop the influence of the Xavier midfield and scoring power. The red and black mafia were stung by the 3 point loss to Old Brighton, they’ll be adding Aaron Vandenberg back into the 22 after he was a late withdrawal. The tantalising midfield match up of Xav’s captain Marcus Stavrou coming up against the wrecking ball Gus Borthwick is worth putting an isolated camera on itself. Much like Collegians, OM’s came from behind at 3 quarter time with a barnstorming 6 goal final quarter and will be hoping that momentum rolls into the start of this match having kicked just 1 goal in their opening quarters so far in 2022. While 3-0 is the perfect start for Old Brighton, Collegians and St Kevin’s and history puts them in the box seat at this very early stage of the season, already we’ve seen momentum swings, come-from-behind victories, tight scoring and the only thing you can predict is that no matter what happens on the weekend, Brian Waldron will still refuse to make a bold prediction.

St Bedes Mentone kick off their 2022 campaign with a Bang A glorious day for football set the tone for a competitive round 2. St Bedes/Mentone came out guns blazing with a 54-point win over Williamstown and an arm wrestle down at Holmes-Todd Oval between AJAX and Fitzroy fell the way of The Jackers. Beaumaris were victorious on their home turf in their contest against Old Carey as The Uni Blacks continued their success in their win over De La.
Elsternwick played host to a close battle between the Roys and the Jackers, Fitzroy took advantage of the wind in the first quarter kicking 3 early goals. AJAX got to work to get themselves back in the game resulting in a single point margin at the halftime siren. With the win still up for grabs in the last ten minutes, the Jackers were able to dig in and take home the four points. A well fought effort from Rhys Seakins and Darcy Lowrie across Fitzroy’s half backline, showed composure and determination as they spoiled numerous forward entry attempts. A critical goal from Brad Caplan in the final term saw AJAX take control. The Jackers showed great confidence and hunger for the footy, highlighted by defensive talent Adam Caplan and his consistent attempt at a record-breaking torpedo. AJAX will enjoy a twoweek break as they face the upcoming long weekend and a bye in round 3. Fitzroy have their fingers crossed for their first win of the season as they face Williamstown on ANZAC day.
Fresh off a bye, St Bedes/Mentone were raring to go, beginning their 2022 season with a remarkable win over Williamstown CYMS. Despite a fantastic effort from CY’s Taite Sharpe down back and tireless work from Dean Cutajar in the ruck, the physicality of the Tigers saw them dominate the stoppages and ultimately, the scoreboard. An outstanding performance from Brayden O’Toole saw him lead the goalkicking with 6, while young gun Nick Grech put on a show in his senior debut. St Bedes/Mentone will have their work cut out for them as they face the Uni Blacks in round 3 as the CY’s prepare for their ANZAC Day clash against The Roys, taking place on Monday the 25th of April.
The Uni Blacks once again showed that they mean business in their 41-point victory over De La Salle. What began as a close game ended in triumph for the Blackers with Brendan Dess and Louis Vescio working hard in the forward line. A great way to celebrate Hugh Curnow’s 100 th game whose accurate and powerful left shoe proved to be a catalyst in their victory. Although a disappointing result for De La, the speed and agility of Adrian Indovino and Rob Ritson is to be commended. Looking forward to Round 3, De La faces Beaumaris down at the aquarium. The Uni Blacks face a tough opponent in St Bedes/Mentone. As both are strong and tactical sides, this will be a game to keep your eye on.
Down at Banksia reserve, the might of Beaumaris proved too strong for Old Carey taking home a 68-point victory. Some early injuries for the Sharks sent Will Skinner forward, proving him a versatile asset for Beauy kicking 3. Robert Cathcart utilised his experience and ended the game with 5 goals 5. The Panthers put up a good fight with Tim Newton and Alex Mcdonald working hard all day, moving the ball well into their forward 50. However, their lack of scoreboard conversion allowed Beaumaris to run away with the game. Joel Di Natale and Matthew Petering continued to show exceptional leadership and talent. After the break, Old Carey returns home to take on Old Haileybury as Beauy hopes to keep their streak against De La Salle.

Rovers break hoodoo as Nodders flip the script from opening round The young Hampton Rovers unit broke a club hoodoo with a convincing victory over Old Ivanhoe; a win that could have been greater still had not their accuracy in front of goal deserted them through the middle of this match. Long-time club watchers were unable to recall the last time that Rovers came away from Chelsworth Park with the points, but if this piece of history overawed them, they certainly didn’t let it show, taking a one-point advantage from the first term. The game could have been over and done with at the main break had not Hampton kicked only four goals from their fi fteen second quarter shots. As it was, a 29-point break was too much for Old Ivanhoe to reel in as the Rovers runners did not let up for the whole afternoon. Rovers’ return of 8.11 for the second half saved Old Ivanhoe from a complete rout; mind you, the Grammarians were inaccurate themselves for the second week running. Hampton Rovers ended up delighted to remain undefeated with a 58-point triumph. Josh McPherson kicked three for the winners, for whom Christian Carnovale and Max Coughlin were best. Luke Scuderi with three goals tried hard for Old Ivanhoe, as did Nick Reeves-Smyth and Hamish Matheson.
Mazenod and Marcellin opened their accounts for 2022, and Parkdale Vultures began their tenure in Premier C with a tenacious, but ultimately unsuccessful display against one of the division’s heavy hitters. It was truly a fascinating round two. If Mazenod were a little disappointing against Ormond in round one, they were seriously impressive on their home deck in round two. Old Geelong travelled to Central Reserve keen on redemption after being put to the sword by Monash the week before, and immediately took the game to their hosts, with only a greater efficiency in front of goal giving the Nodders a quarter time lead. This all changed in the second quarter as Mazenod took control, kicking fi ve goals to only one reply in establishing a handy 23-point half time advantage. Thus Mazenod knew that they only had to go goal for goal to complete their victory, and this they were able to do in the second half. Old Geelong was only able to reduce the deficit by six points as the locals eased to a 17-point victory. Jack Caspersz kicked four goals and Tom Riley three for Mazenod, for whom Sam Michael and Peter Rozinidis were winners on the day. Jack Sheridan continued his good early season form for Old Geelong, as did Lochie Radcliffe.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Ormond assumed control early against Parkdale Vultures and never let it go in this clash at EE Gunn Reserve, where 18 of the 23 goals for the day came at the scoring end. Ormond had the advantage in the first term and used it wisely, kicking well to position and finishing in deadly fashion in front of goal. Seven goals to one in the first term could have been fatal for the Vultures boys, but they worked hard to reduce the deficit, halving it by half time. Parkdale needed to reduce the damage against the wind in the third quarter, and they did this relatively effectively to turn for home fi ve goals down. This Ormond unit however are battlehardened and don’t give up these leads easily, and on this occasion were able to hold Parkdale at arm’s length to score a 17-point win. Tom Buckley backed up his solid round one form with three goals for Ormond, as did Zach Benson. Jack Alnwick and Luke Bailey were amongst the Vultures best.

Monash Blues scored a relatively routine ten-goal win over UHS-VU, who stuck within striking distance of their highly fancied opponents until half time before being overrun in the third and fourth quarters. Whilst Monash won all four quarters of the match, they only took a three-goal advantage to the main break. However they flexed their muscle after a few stirring words from the coaching staff, kicking four goals to one in the third quarter and a further six in the last. Nick Darling kicked four for the victors, whilst Harrison and Thomas Rocke worked hard for UHS-VU in a losing cause. Old Mentonians shocked Marcellin with fi ve goals to none with the breeze in the opening stanza, and were able to limit the damage when Marcellin had the advantage to go to half time eleven points to the good. It was the third quarter though where Marcellin were able to win this one. Marcellin limited Old Mentonians to 1.6 whilst kicking 2.1 themselves to go to three-quarter time only ten points down. Points on the board, of course, always bring their own pressure, but Marcellin were able to deliver the coup-de-grace with four goals to one in the last term to run over the top of the game Panthers by nine points. Daniel Cullinan was a consistent winner for Marcellin, whilst Stuart Harris was Old Mentonians best for the second week running.

Gossy boots 300 Brendan Goss kicks his 300th senior goal in Round 2 against Old Brighton at Toorak Park. He won the A-section goalkicking award back in 2013 with 80 goals and has been a well-known member of the Xav’s forward line, alongside Matt Handley who’s kicked over 800 senior goals.
PLAY4BCNA Round – Mother’s Day Weekend The VAFA is proud to partner again with Breast Cancer Network Australia for the PLAY4BCNA Round in 2022 in support of Australians affected by breast cancer, to be played on the weekend of May 7-8. Following a hugely successful fundraising campaign last year in which VAFA clubs raised in excess of $28,000, we have again registered a league fundraising event, with a collective fundraising target of $30,000 to help support the 20,000 Australians we know will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone. Clubs need to sign up by April 22 to ensure all BCNA merchandise is received in time for the round. Full details can be found on the VAFA website and Portal.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Ruby Dale (Caulfield Grammarians) The VAFA congratulates Ruby Dale from Caulfield Grammarians who is the round 2 Anytime Fitness Rising Star nominee. Ruby made her debut on the weekend and kicked 3 goals in her first outing for the Fields. What the club said: We were very excited when Ruby was able to make her debut with CGFC last week. A current year 12 student at Caulfield Grammar and member of the 2022 Sandringham Dragons NAB League side, Ruby is a really powerful and talented forward with a glorious kick for goal. Ruby slotted into the senior line up and never looked out of place, taking plenty of marks and kicking three really important goals in what was a really physically demanding and hard fought win against a super solid opponent.
Ruby has an exceptionally bright footy future in front of her, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for this budding superstar. Congratulations Ruby from all at the Caulfield Grammarians Football Club.
When she’s not dominating for the Fields, expect to find Ruby kicking bags during the AGS/APS school competition this year for Caulfield Grammar School.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Will Skinner (Beaumaris) The VAFA congratulates the second Men’s Rising Star nominee of 2022 – Will Skinner from Beaumaris. Through necessity in Round 2, Will was thrown forward and kicked 3 goals in the Sharks 68 point win over Old Carey in Premier B. What the club said: Will Skinner started playing for the Beaumaris Football Club in 2021. In 2019, while playing U17s, he was recruited to the Sandy Dragons, which he continued to do until 2021 when he decided that he would be better served playing Under 19s and senior football at Beaumaris. Will played 5 games in the U19s Premier team before being recruited to play in Bluey McKenna’s seniors in 2021. Since then Will has been a regular in the Senior team.
On Saturday after suffering an upper thigh injury, Mckenna, threw Will into a forward pocket where he proceeded to kick 3 fantastic goals. Will is a terrific young man and has endeared himself to team mates and supporters alike.
Although Will has predominantly been used as a defender, he has been utilised in various positions across the ground, including wing, midfield and up forward.

Big wins the story of the day in round two action Round 2 of Division 1 Men’s action was the week for absolute demolition, with more than being won by over a 50 point margin - some teams came in a big way to stamp some authority over their rivals.
Riley Verbi back into the lineup it was almost going to be $1.10 for them to take the 4 points. A fight was certainly put up by Therry Penola, given their highest scoring quarter came in the 4th meaning they certainly didn’t give up - but the reason this team is at the top of the table is because when someone hands them a shovel, they have no issue burying a team. This Camberwell team is a clear force to be reckoned with, and as their matchups begin to get closer to their level it will be interesting to see how their style of play continues to stack up.
Let’s start off with the first of the day which saw Prahran Assumption take on St Marys Salesian out at Ferndale Park. For assumption they were coming off a loss against the rising Glen Eira, whilst for St Mary’s they were trying to come back from a big first round loss at the hands of Old Camberwell. In terms of redemption, things did not start well for St Marys giving up 7 majors in the first term, with the onslaught of goals only continuing not seizing to rain down. In the end, the class of this Prahran Assumption side ran out overwhelming winners claiming their first win of the year by a whopping 113 points. Some notable performances for this Prahran team came at the feet of Matty Clifford with 5 majors to his name.
Now I thought this would be an interesting game, and for the wrong reasons my end certainly proved to be between PEGS and Whitefriars. It was actually Whitefriars who showed why they were second on the table at the end of last year, taking a small lead into the first break, but from there on out it looks like the game was absolutely played and dominated in PEGS style of football, capitalizing to run out 55 point winners against a quality outfit in Whitefriars. I will be honest I probably disrespected PEGS a little bit given I tipped against them and assumed they would be overrun, but with Riley Simmons going for best on ground and booting 3 goals they have clearly done
We’ll turn our attention now to Old Camberwell taking on bottom of the table Therry Penola at Gordon Barnard Reserve. For Old Camberwell, who ran out massive winners in round one, this was always going to be a game you expect them to win and after adding Pepper Medalist

some good recruiting and game play to be able to hold up against the best, it was an impressive victory and without a doubt throws them in the mix now 2-0 and has teams wondering. For Whitefriars, it’s 0-2 and back to the drawing board to work out just what’s going wrong, and how to fix it. Big game. This game caught me by surprise if I am totally honest given the number of blowouts across the division, but Oakleigh took it right up to Kew, and almost came away with the surprise 4 points of the round. Oakleigh quite frankly jumped Kew it was as simple as that, there clearly mustn’t have been a respect for the boys from Oakleigh as they lead into every break before booting no majors of their own in the last to allow Kew to run away with it by a mere 7 points. I said at the start of the year I saw Oakleigh remaining at the bottom if they couldn’t get better defensively, well clearly, they have - with 2021 Leading Goal Scorer Cloak booting 2, this team is building, and they nearly caught a major player for the top of the table sleeping. Saturday Night lights rounds out the Division 1 recap with Glen Eira taking on Old Peninsula down at Packer Park. Let me tell you, I called this game for the VAFA… Glen Eira are the real deal. It was astounding to hear they have 5 players out all with injury from their round 1 win, and after being restrained to only a 3 goal lead into the half they absolutely ran a muck in the second half running out 75 point winners, with a personal highlight being Riley Bass kicking two of the most party goals back to back in the second term. For Peninsula they desperately need to improve their rebound 50’s from defence, they have heart and good users of the ball they just seem to get caught up out of defence… If they improve, they win more games without a doubt.

Sunshine, fast-tracks and high-scores! Round 2 of the Division 2 section saw the highest scores of the weekend with three teams finding their way to 20+ goals and triple digit victories.
Aquinas have gone 2-0 to start the season with a 20 point win over Bulleen Templestowe. It was a 1 point ball-game at half-time, Aquinas extended that lead to 16 points at 3 quarter time. It could have been much greater however inaccuracy dominated with 1.10.16 in the third term.
Tommy Hunter’s Brunswick produced a stellar display in the second half as part of their 151 point win over Power House. Tom Wilson helped himself to 5 goals as part of the 18 goal second half onslaught along with the Angus twins (Ross and Coverdale) kicking 4 goals each.
2 goals apiece to Billy O’Loughlin, Harry Dwyer, Josh Clinton helped Aquinas to the victory which Jack Cowell followed up his 2 goals last week with another 3 for the Ants on Saturday.
Aaron Christensen is making himself right at home in the Brunswick line up with 3 majors and being named the best player on the ground.
They’ll play host to Manningham when footy resumes post-Easter while Aquinas will welcome Power House to the college for their third straight home game.
The team takes to the road after the Easter bye to face off against Yarra Old Grammarians with the aim to make it 3 in a row.
In the closest game of the round MHSOB made it 2 from 2 with a 12 point win over Ivanhoe AFC. Storming home in the final term, plus a bag of 6 from Ash Close wasn’t enough to get the Hoers over the line, however it extends his lead at the top of the sharpshooters table with 13 for the season.
In the second of the 100+ results Old Paradians claimed their first win of the season over Manningham. After setting up the game in the opening half with 8 goals to 1, they extended their prowess with 12 goals to 3 after half-time.
Ashan Wijayakumara kicked 4 for the victors while Julian Eimutis, in his first game with MHSOB since coming across from Collegians was named the best player on the ground.
Four goals to Nathan Archangel and Luke Brock helped the travellers get back in the black with their % after last week’s 86 point loss that started their season. Nathan Fraser in his first outing for the year was named in the best.
Ivanhoe will take to the field under the Saturday night lights in Round 3, playing host to West Brunswick, will it signal the debut of Scott Selwood? We’ll have to wait and see!
The victory sets up a big clash against MHSOB in Round 3, after both of these sides finished in the top 4 at the abandonment of the 2021 season. The other top 4 side in 2021 West Brunswick are on the winners list in style after a 5 point loss in Round 1. A 19 point lead at quarter time extended to 84 points at halftime with 10 goals in the second quarter.
ROUND 3 TIPS
It was a day out for Luke Butler at the Magpies kicking 7 goals up forward. David Ferrier had a best on ground display kicking 3 goals himself as did Bill Irving. Ryan Pollard was the shining light for Yarra Old Grammarians with 3 goals of his own.

Hawks wings clipped again, wickers making themselves right at home It was a stark comparison weather-wise when the Division 3 Men strolled out onto the field on Saturday, with Melbourne turning it on for round two. All four game scores collectively surpassed the 100-point threshold, though behinds still outweighed goals on the day.
Ladder-leaders Elsternwick have beaten Richmond Central by 29 points at Kevin Bartlett Reserve to go 2-0 for the season so far. The Wickers kept a defendable distance between them and the home side for the whole game, taking a 33-point lead into half-time, and a four-goal-to-one fourth quarter still couldn’t get the Snakes over the line. Ben Reese was named best on for Elsternwick, but it was Matt Ball (3) who continued his goalkicking ways, with Nicholas Lowrie and Quinn De Luca both contributing two each. For Richmond Central, Thomas Rivers (2) and Jason Orr (2) put majors on the board, and Benson Adams took top honours.
The sun was the only shining light for 2021’s minor premiers in Hawthorn, who suffered their second loss of the season against an Emmaus St Leo’s side looking to respond, while Elsternwick haven’t missed a beat after their elevation from Division 4. Emmaus St Leo’s got their season started, finally, downing Hawthorn at Bennettswood Reserve by 71 points. The two-blues got off to a great start, kicking four goals to zero in the first term before an interrupted second quarter stalled the game somewhat. Even a late fourth-quarter rally couldn’t save the Hawks, especially after the Animals kicked ten goals in the third term to all but seal the deal. Dan Hill kicked fi ve majors for Emmaus St Leo’s, but all eyes were on Baxter Newbegin (3) who had somehow found himself playing forward for most of the day despite being a stalwart backman. In his first game for the club, Mike Washington took top honours as best-on. For Hawthorn, they had seven individual goalkickers, but it was Charlie Boots who was once again the best of the best.
Parkside have kickstarted their season with a bang with a 151-point win over the Westbourne Grammarians at Pitcher Park. A 17-goal first half set up an insurmountable lead for the home side, who also limited their opponents to just two behinds. Red Devil Simon Mackie (11) made up for lost time, taking out best-on honours and rocketing to the top of the divisional goalscoring tally after just one game, while Benedict Douglas (4) and Lewis Balcombe (3) contributed plenty too. Ben Johnson was the Warriors’ only goalscorer on the day and Brendan Donald was their best. With round three not until after the Easter break, all teams have the opportunity to rest and make plans for the next part of the season.
It also must be said that all is well with Animal Hugh Schaeche, who has been released from hospital following a second-quarter incident.
But when VAFA footy returns, there are some mouthwatering contests, none more so than Elsternwick v South Melbourne Districts. It’s their first meeting in Division 3 after both teams were promoted, but if their battles from 2021 are anything to go by, those at Holmes Todd Oval are in for a real treat. The Bloods will be fresh off their two-week break, while the Wickers are unbeaten two rounds into the season.
Canterbury have continued their winning ways after beating North Brunswick by 45 points at Canterbury Sportsground. It was a tight tussle in the first quarter before the Cobras put their foot on the accelerator to go into the main break with a 26-point buffer. Five goals to two in the third term gave the home side the advantage, so not even a fairly even final quarter could give North Brunswick a chance. John Nicolopoulos kicked fi ve goals in his first game for Richmond Central as Ryan Murray (4) rode shotgun in the forward line, and Nick Szabo (2) was named best-on. For the Bulls, Gary Savage (3) and Kali Dawborn (2) got their team on the board and Luke Russell was the best. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

For their third home game in a row, Emmaus St Leo’s will welcome Richmond Central to Bennettswood Reserve. Only two rounds have passed so far but it’s been a rollercoaster already for the Animals who were truly beaten in their first game, but responded well to comfortably beat last year’s minor premiers. The Snakes will look to rebound in a similar fashion, having gone down to divisional-newcomers in round two.

North Brunswick are yet to get on the board in 2022, but will face a tough Parkside outfi t, fresh off a thumping win, at Allard Park. The Bulls have been competitive in both their games but have yet to come away with a win, while Parkside’s first-round bye set them up for huge first game in round two. It’s been a rough start to the year for last year’s minor premiers in Hawthorn, who have yet to get a mark in the win tally. In round 3, they’ll welcome an unbeaten Canterbury side to Rathmines Road Reserve after what is likely to be a rough review of their first two games.

St John’s start their campaign strong whilst the Razorbacks and La Trobe remain undefeated Swinburne played host to Masala in what was an exciting clash between the two sides. Whilst Masala was looking to rebound from a tough loss, Swinburne was looking to go 2-0 to start the season. For the majority of the game, Masala kept playing catch up as midfielders Tom Williamson and Anthony Dorrington sought to keep the Tigers in the game. The first half was however controlled by Swinburne in particular Nick Coad who kicked 4 goals in the second quarter alone. At three-quarter time, Swinburne led 85-61 and the stage was set for a huge final 30 minutes. Masala went on a roll kicking 6 of the first 7 goals of the final quarter and went up by a goal with about 10 minutes to go. After some back and forth Swinburne turned the tide and kicked the last four goals of the game to run away with the win. Razorback Nick Coad was judged best on ground with 7 goals whilst teammate Luke Mcmanus ended the game with 5 goals. For Masala, the scoring was shared with Declan Fowler and Anthony Dorrington both kicking 3 goals each and Zac Pahos, Cameron Young and Andrew Moore each kicking 2.
Box Hill North was coming out of a tough loss to Eley Park and in round 2 they faced another tough opponent in La Trobe. La Trobe came out of the gate with one of the best quarters of the year as they kicked 9 goals in the first in addition to keeping Box Hill scoreless. The second quarter showed more of the same as La Trobe kicked another 5 goals to Box Hill’s 2. The second half was much better for Box Hill as they slowed their opposition’s momentum down, only allowing La Trobe 6 goals in the second half whilst they kicked 3. Ultimately it was La Trobe who ran out winners 135-35 after their dominant first half. For La Trobe, Bryce Dowler and Riley Alexander continued their round 1 form with 6 goals each whilst Tate Spiteri kicked 5. For Box Hill, Leon Desmond kicked 2 goals and Marcus Lorkin was judged best on field for the Demons for his 2 goals. Box Hill will now face Albert Park in what is a crucial game for the Demons if they are to play finals footy in 2022. La Trobe will have the bye in round 3 before they face Albert Park after their two weeks off.
Swinburne will look to extend their winning streak as they face St Johns who are coming off the back of a good win against Eley Park. Masala will make the trip to Whitehorse Reserve as they face the Sharks in a must-win clash. Eley Park was looking to continue their winning ways following their win over Box Hill North in round 1 whilst this was the first match St John’s played in the season following their round 1 bye. In perfect conditions, the game started evenly with there not being much of a difference in the first half as St John’s took a 42 to 34 lead against the Sharks as both teams went into the major break. time, St John’s took charge kicking 6 goals to 2 in the third quarter. In the final quarter, the Sharks slowed the momentum of the JOC’s, however not much could be done following the big 3rd quarter by the JOCS. In the end, St John’s ran out as winners 104 to 61. For Eley Park, Tom Johnston was the best on the ground after kicking 5 majors. Other important players for the Sharks included Mackenzie Field, Martin Louey and Ben Field. For St John’s, Jason Naffa had 4 majors and teammates Andrew Daly and Rohan Scott kicked 3 goals each. Others in the best for St John’s include Ethan Hope and Nicholas Terrill. Eley Park will now take on Masala in what will be a key game for the Sharks if they are to go on to play finals this season. St John’s will now play Swinburne in what will be a tough game for the JOC’s. Albert Park who had the bye will now take on Box Hill North at home in what will be a good test to see where the Falcons are at in 2022.

Arriving at the Monash Gryphons as a fresh faced young university student from Wagga Wagga, Ash has been a fixture across half back since game 1. Ash has been appointed Senior Captain for Season 2022 and as a born leader of men, has taken the leadership mantle in his stride. Ash is a 2016 and 2018 Premiership player and Vice-Captain of the 2021 Minor Premiership team. We look forward to Ash’s tough and uncompromising style continuing to inspire teammates on the field and setting the off-field standards of professionalism and genuine concern for the wellbeing of all players at our club. Congratulations Ash – we look forward to the next 100 games!
Ed Mahady (St Bernards)
100
Good luck to big Ed Mahady who lines up for his 100th game for the club this week. After moving from St Pats in the Albury Wodonga League. Ed joined St Bernards Under 19s in 2015 before progressing into open age ranks. Unfortunately, Ed copped an early season injury last year but it‘s great to see him back on the park. Well done Ed!
Ed Furey (Old Scotch)
150
Congratulations to Ed Furey on reaching 150 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Fuz joined the club from Scotch College in 2010, spending his first three years in the under 19s, before moving into the senior ranks in 2013. Fuz has played many years at 2nd and 1st XVIII level, kicking 254 goals. Fuz is a great clubman and currently the player representative on the committee. Fuz was an integral part of the Men’s Premier ‘B’ 2nd XVIII premiership team in 2019. We wish Fuz all the best on reaching this significant milestone.
Chris Hughes (St Bernards)
150
Congrats to Chris Hughes who will chalk up his 150th game for the club this week. After progressing through U18 and U19 ranks Chris became a regular fixture in the senior line up celebrating his 100th Senior game in round 2. We look forward to seeing Chris add many more to his tally. Well done Chris!
Justin Hunter (Elsternwick)
250
Justin Hunter is set to play his 250th game for Elsternwick. Justin has kicked over 700 goals in the VAFA, with his career spanning circa 20 years and still playing senior football. He also played Aussie Rules during his time in London, participated in an AFL tournament in Asia and has been a bit of a personality around the VAFA (cc’d George to validate that). He appeared on the VAFA tragics a couple years ago when he kicked his 700th goal. He’s been captain of our club, played in our premiership (2005) and runner up (2013) sides, has spent many years on the committee and really stuck with the club through its ups (D2) and downs (D4 battlers) and there is absolutely no doubt he is the cultural leader of our club.

Redemption for St Kevin’s, Melbourne Uni right at home in William Buck Premier Women’s Big Blow outs and Tight tussles made for an actionpacked weekend in Round 2 of the William Buck Premier Women’s competition.
possession across the ground but Old Xavs were the team who made the most of their possession to convert goals. St Mary’s Salesian scored their first goal of the game and the year after a penalty that put them right in front of goals. It was a team effort that got them the goal and they continued to show improvement from the week before.
St Kevin’s opened the scoring early in the match and were able to keep pressure on Marcellin across the fi fty metre arc to lock the ball in and stop the transition for Marcelling off points. There was a serious injury early on for Marcelling after a big pack marking contest, that left them a player down early on. St Kevin’s continued their strong defensive pressure throughout the quarter to keep Marcellin scoreless in the first quarter, while managing 9 scoring shots themselves.
Old Xavs were covering more space on ground and always seemed to have someone at the fall of the ball, this saw them take command of the game. To St Mary’s credit though, they took the game on in the second to put together some strong plays and score two goals in the second quarter. St Mary’s held lots of the play in their forward fi fty throughout the quarter, but the defence of the Old Xavs stood tall and limited to the attempts St Mary’s were able to have on goal.
The second quarter saw much of the same with the St Kevin’s midfield piling on the pressure from the first bounce. St Kevin’s added a few more goals in the first part of the quarter, but Marcellin put on some solid pressure themselves and got a breakthrough goal which brought a huge celebration from the team. The wall of defence for St Kevin’s remained and they went into half time with a 5 goal lead.
The second half of this game was a dominant performance from Old Xavier’s. They controlled every aspect of the rest of the day and held St. Mary’s scoreless until the final siren. As the game went on Old Xavier’s were able to develop their link up game and work on using handball more, rather than relying on foot as much. In attack they were able to add 6 goals across the half and come out 69 point winners.
Despite the commanding lead, St Kevin’s continued the pressure in the second half of the game. The midfield laying strong tackles and putting immense pressure on the Marcellin ball holders, forcing mistakes. It allowed them to add another four goals to their score and come into the last quarter with a very comfortable lead. For Marcellin the pain didn’t end as they had another player come off in the hands of the trainer.
The game between Caulfield Grammarians and Kew saw teams who both had incredible wins in round one and sitting at one and two on the ladder. This game was the definition of an arm wrestle, with both teams struggling to take hold of the contest. Play around the ball was congested early on but Caulfield were the early leaders.
As the game went on Marcellin started to come together better as a team and were able to move the ball through the ground more. They were applying more on ball pressure and in the early part of the last quarter they scored their second goal for the game. A small highlight for the team in an otherwise challenging day. For St Kevin’s they can now go into the Easter break with a 2-0 start to the season.
The defence of Kew was strong and for most of the second quarter they had strong pressure on Caulfield and were forcing turnovers for Caulfield, for Kew though they were unable to really do any damage on the scoreboard. For Caulfield they took the opportunities when they had them and snagged a goal right before the siren to lead narrowly.
Coming off a close loss last week to Melbourne Uni, Old Xaverians wasted no time getting started in the match and opened the scoring early. There was measured THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

A strong intercept mark early in the third saw Caulfield get the scoring off after the main break. The possession traded ends after this and unfortunately there was a horrific injury for Kew after a courageous smothering attempt. The arm wrestle continued with Kew kicking a goal to keep themselves within reach.

This quarter it was Kew who got the scoring off first to tighten the game right up, they were hungry to get the win and it wasn’t long before they kicked another and the lead was less than a goal. They upped their defensive pressure and held the ball in attack, providing some worry for Caulfield. It was less than a minute to go and Caulfield got a goal against the flow of the game to seal their victory in a heart stopper. Melbourne Uni and West Brunswick were the last game for round 2 and this matchup was another close affair. Melbourne Uni had a great start to being promoted to the premier division and have once again come out and shown the competition why they aren’t just making up the numbers. They took this game on from the early minutes and held their own with West Brunswick to keep them goalless in the first half. West Brunswick on the other hand, did well to hold their defensive lines and stopped Melbourne Uni from scoring another goal after the second quarter. West Brunswick did all they could to try and claw back a win, but in the end their inaccuracies in front of goal cost them the win.
