SEASON 2023 - April 29
Jason ReddickCEO
A sunny 23 degree day greeted the majority of our VAFA Clubs in Round 2 to set the perfect scene for Amateur football.
With the perfect conditions came the large crowds, it has been fantastic to witness the number of VAFA patrons attending games in their droves, supporting their teams and events.
Round 2 also held significant importance to commemorate the ANZACS, and acknowledge the selfless men and women who have served, and continue serving, our country, so we can live the lives we do.
Many VAFA Clubs took the opportunity to conduct special commemorative ceremonies including University Blues, Old Scotch, Beaumaris, St Bernards, Fitzroy, and Hampton Rovers, in what is now one of the most celebrated occasions on the football calendar.
I’m looking forward to the action this week, there are a number of key games that will surely be well attended and further whet the appetite.
Division 1 Women’s, Old Brighton will face off against Marcellin as the two undefeated sides, whilst Beaumaris look to extend their 20-game winning streak against Hampton Rovers.
A large crowd will be in attendance at Pitcher Park to witness the contest between the Division 3 Men’s 2022 Grand Finalists Parkside and South Melbourne to see who takes the Division 2 bragging rights.
The good news story for the underdogs was in Division 4 Women’s last week, with Old Carey saluting for their first win since 2019, beating South Melbourne by 22 points. They will take a renewed confidence into their challenge overcoming a strong Elsternwick team this week.
patrons attending games in their droves
In William Buck Premier Men’s, Uni Blacks will play host to Old Haileybury in a replay of the 2022 Premier B Grand Final, whilst Collegians will welcome Old Brighton in a clash of the 2022 Premier Men’s Preliminary Final teams. The first home game for the Lions in 2023.
In William Buck Premier Women’s, the reigning Premiers St Kevins being tested by newcomers Coburg, fresh off their first win in the competition, a 105 point malling of Old Xaverians at Piranha Park.
In Premier C Men’s, it’s interesting to see that PEGS and Old Camberwell, the two sides to come up from Division 1, remain the only sides undefeated after the first fortnight of action.
Some players will have added incentive to perform this week as the spotlight turns to potential squad members for our Big V representative teams to take on the Perth Football League on July 15th.
It is so exciting to have secured the services of two highly credentialed senior coaches in Greg Hutchison (Mens) and Paul Groves (Womens).
Both coaches have shown a strong passion for the VAFA and are equally excited for the opportunity to showcase our best talent on this interstate rivalry stage.
With the successful tradition of past teams (womens undefeated in 3 games, mens 80% winning record) wearing the Big V is a huge honour and with the best players to be chosen from across the competition, motivational levels to perform will be higher than usual as we begin scouting the matches this weekend.
Good luck to players performing at all levels, continue to enjoy your VAFA football.

Genuine cause for excitement this coming weekend
The match ups heading into Round 3 of the William Buck Premier season make me wish we could split the round from Friday night, through to Sunday. So we could get to as many of these contests as possible.
All part of the theme this weekend sees a Grand Final rematch, the replay of the 2022 preliminary final, a pure footy rivalry. Will a dominant run of victories continue at Elsternwick Park and can Old Xaverians win at Glen Huntly Oval for the first time in over a decade?
Starting at the Harry Trott Oval. Collegians are the most exciting team to watch in the VAFA’s top-flight, if you’re a fan of the run and gun fast footy. If you are more inclined to the tough, grunt, brashness in footy, then Old Brighton is your pick of the bunch.
This weekend the rematch of the 2022 preliminary final takes centre stage, the Lions at home for the first time this year. Old Brighton keen to keep a strong formline against the purple army going. Since coming up to William Buck Premier in 2018, the Tonners lead the head-to-head battle five wins to two. At the Trott, three wins from four starts.
Collegians lost Ben Woodful before the bounce last weekend against Old Scotch. However, regained Dave Mirra. Jared Rivers has put his trust in fresh faces and new names to keep the momentum of 2022 rolling into 2023. Al Fahie, Nick Canny, Will D’Amico are all biding their time in the reserves, awaiting a call up if required.
Old Brighton have started the year with games against the newcomers to A-Section, Uni Blacks and Old Haileybury. Collegians pose a genuine Premiership threat to the Tonners. The team they bundled out of September. Lochie Filipovic kicked multiple goals in the reserves, is this the weekend Dan Donati unleashes him in the 2pm timeslot?
The RSN Xtra Match of the Day will come from Melbourne University as University Blacks try to exact revenge on Old Haileybury. 2022 is well and truly in the past. Grand Final day lives on only in memory.
Blacks will see this contest as a chance to open up the wins column in 2023. For much of the afternoon against archrivals University Blues, they had control of the ball, control of the air, and control at the contest. Unable to capitalise in front of goal was the sides biggest let down.
The opening fortnight for Old Haileybury hasn’t been kind to them, the reigning premiers St Kevin’s in week one, the runners up Old Brighton in week two. Daniel Ward’s men match up really well against Blacks, beating them twice from the past three matches at Melbourne Uni Oval.
Munro, Rich, all Seccull boys had the bragging rights in 2022. 2023 is a whole new ball game, Steadman, Moorfield, Ernest and co won’t have forgotten, and they’ll be out to make sure it won’t happen again.
Speaking of 2022, the season opened with a bang for Old Scotch. A final quarter blitz in the wet with Aiden Franetic making himself the hero against University Blues. The return bout came after the double bye, at the time the Blues were stripped of Premiership points.
The Cardinals it can be argued got the Blues when they were ripe for the picking. The only hole (after a fortnight) you can pick out of this Blues outfit in 2023 is the accuracy in front of goal. A staggering 15.35 (125) is how Guy Martyn’s men have started the year, last year’s sharpshooter Sam Grimley has kicked 4.8.
Round two was a similar story for Old Scotch who butchered the footy in front of goal, 2.6 in the final quarter as chances went begging. The forward line of the Cardinals will be out to flip the script on the scoring, but also make the Blues defensive stocks (Gleeson, Stephens, O’Shea, Young) more accountable.
Sam Grant was a late withdrawal last week due to injury. If he isn’t able to get up for this weekend, Blues may see this as an opportunity to stretch the talls of Old Scotch by recalling former Cardinal, Will Carrington to pair with Ayce Cordy in the middle of the ground.

When the footy Gods smile on you, they really smile. St Kevin’s must have the strongest of connections with those gods at the moment. Three premierships in four seasons, a tight-knit bunch of players, currently on a 10-game winning streak, it’s the stuff of legend.
And against Old Melburnians, it’s a similar scoreline. SKOB have won 10 of the previous 11 matches against the old dark navy blues. It doesn’t seem to matter what ground, what time of the year, the players in or out of the team, against OM’s, they get the job done.
Old Melburnians have started this year with two losses. Both games they’ve been right in the contest at 3 quarter time. Outscored by nine goals across the final quarters to Uni Blues and Old Xaverians.
There’s been a significant change in personnel under Paul Satterley, the team is currently a mirror image to how they started 2022. Just two wins from their past eight matches. Satts won’t hit the panic button if they fall to 0-3 on Saturday, but the experienced campaigner will know how tough it is to chase down the leading pack if they do.
Plugger Lynch won’t rest on his laurels, after an opening round scare to Old Haileybury, Caulfield followed up to stay with the reigning premiers for three quarters. He is well aware his side is the hunted, and opposition sides are throwing everything at them.
Despite the head-to-head record, they’ll need to be at their best, because once the ball is bounced on Saturday, previous history counts for nothing.
To round out this history lesson, Old Xaverians are in some form of drought against Caulfield Grammarians. Having not won at Glen Huntly Oval since 2012. In the games they’ve played against the Fields since, the blue and white have walked away winners.
Julian Dobosz has proven to be a handful in previous encounters, he found his way onto the scoreboard last week which will give the boy from Tassie plenty of confidence.
The man with the best name in footy Ingo Dammersmith returned from the VFL to play in the side last weekend, if he isn’t recalled to higher honours it might be a nice little side show to the main course if he faces off against fellow VFL youngster Tommy McRae.
Billy Gowers will miss this contest, Dan Robinson however, was a handy inclusion in James Byrnes’ side and knows how to find the footy. Charlie MacIsaac is a handful in the forward line when he is on song.
Caulfield, despite falling away to St Kevin’s, will take confidence from the patches of footy where the game was on their terms. It’s a different Fields side to 2022, but the experienced names of Jack Edwards, Tom O’Sullivan, Pat Bannister, Harry Schaffer, Matt Buntine and Julian Dobosz hold them in good stead.

Beaumaris claim derby while Old Geelong earn bragging rights in GF rematch
As the bugles sang out across Melbourne on Saturday, round two for Premier B Men’s was filled with plenty of significant results as the ladder begins to take shape.
We’ve seen teams hit the ground running in 2023 with Beaumaris, Fitzroy, and St Bernard’s proving the most impressive after the first two weeks of football. Meanwhile consecutive loses to three teams has put them on the backfoot early with plenty of chasing to do in order to stay in touch.
What was dubbed to be one of the closer contests of the weekend Between De La Salle and St Bernard’s was overshadowed by two significant injuries. De La Salle were rattled early on in the match with unfortunate injuries which forced the game to be delayed by 30 minutes. Despite losing two players early, De La Salle were able to stick with the Snowdog’s and only trailed by 8-points at the main break of play. The second half again saw a gallant effort from De La Salle to compete, but the Snowdog’s were able to kick away in the last quarter. Three goals to Luke Di Lizio for a second week in a row was a major booster for St Bernard’s as he begins his 2023 season in tremendous style. Charlie Vague was also able to hit the scoreboard for the Snowdog’s as they recorded their first win at the Snakepit this season. While there was no love lost for De La Salle fans and they can walk away content with the effort on what can only be described as a tough day.
Trinity this week were on the winners list with a comfortable victory against AJAX by 30-points. Ed Weatherson was the star of the afternoon with five majors and a best on ground performance. Weatherson was striking the footy pure and inspired Trinity to their first win in Premier B since being relegated last season. Young gun Miles Scott was strong during the course of the afternoon, hitting the scoreboard and finding the footy while ruckman Harry Thompson provided good representation around the ground also. AJAX were kept to just one goal during the first quarter of play but on a positive note were able to peg goals back in the second quarter to trail by 4-points
at half time. Jonah Micmacher provided potency for AJAX throughout the afternoon but it wasn’t quite enough. Unfortunately for AJAX they begin the season with two straight defeats with a huge round three contest against De La Salle to come.
Another game with added interest was the Premier C grand final rematch contested between 2022 premiers Monash Blues and Old Geelong. Bragging rights for the new season were up for grabs. Old Geelong on this occasion were victorious and got out of the blocks fast with the first goal of the afternoon. Luke Morfoot was influential right around the ground for Old Geelong and added to the scoreboard with two goals along with Nicholls who kicked four majors. Monash Blues were kept in the game with a huge performance from Nic Darling who kicked seven goals for the game and registered a best on ground game for the Blues. Monash are another team to begin on the backfoot this season and will be hoping to crack their first win this weekend against Trinity.
In their traditional Anzac Weekend clash, Williamstown were able to get the better of Williamstown CYMS at the Brunswick Street Oval. Last year, both sides had the opportunity to play on Anzac Day with Fitzroy also claiming victory in a tight game. Saturday, however, saw Fitzroy continuing to dominate in the early part of the season. It was the biggest win of round two for any side with the end margin blowing out to 81-points. The Roys had nine individual goal scorers for the afternoon with six of their 18 goals coming from Harrison Grace who also featured in the best alongside Ted Clayton. For Williamstown, they just fell away in the second half with Fitzroy kicking seven goals to one in the third quarter and it flipped the game.
The other big win came from the local derby with Beaumaris claiming a well-rounded 78-point victory against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. Beaumaris finished with 11 individual goal kickers, the highest of any Premier B side for the weekend with three players each kicking three goals. Riley Mihailovic provided tremendously for the Sharks with a powerful first quarter as they kicked 8 goals to the Tigers two goals. It set up the afternoon though for

the Sharks as they raced away with the win. James Mangoni emerged as a shining light for the Tigers as he tried to keep them in the game with four goals.
With round three to come this weekend, will we continue to see Fitzroy, St Bernard’s and Beaumaris skipping away?
Old Geelong will be hoping to stop Fitzroy at Como Park and after coming off a win in round two, it might just give them some more confidence in the build up to this game. Meanwhile Monash Blues will be aiming to get their first win in Premier B this season as they head to Bulleen to face Trinity. Williamstown will also be looking to break the streak of loses to begin this season and they’ll have to face St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. Meanwhile Waverley Oval will see De La Salle host AJAX for the Bernie Sheehy Cup and it’s tipped to be a great contest with De La Salle hoping to rebound after a difficult weekend. But the final game to round out the weekend will see two in form sides meet at St Bernard’s College with the Snowdog’s and Beaumaris to face off in a massive clash. Both sides are looking to remain undefeated in the first three rounds. The Snakepit has long been a fortress for St Bernard’s over the years but a win to Beaumaris would make things all the more fascinating in 2023.

Ormond start their season strong as PEGS make it two from two
After a cracking opening round, the Premier C Men’s clubs gave us another sensational round of footy across Melbourne, finishing with a mixed bag of results.
Ormond have used their opening-round bye to full advantage, taking down the Hampton Rovers, who showed strong form in round one. The travelling Ormond squad set up their win at Boss James Reserve with a seven-goal-to-one second term that saw them eradicate the Rovers’ 11 point quarter time lead and turn it into a 24-point lead of their own going into the main break.
The Hampton boys were able to recharge themselves and come out revitalised in the second half, winning both the third and fourth quarters, but were unable to halt the Ormond onslaught and ultimately lost their home opener, going down by 11 points.
Errant kicking was a huge factor for the hosts, who had strong showings from O’Driscoll, Carnovale and Morris.
For the victorious visitors, Kennedy was superb to impress Greg Hoskin while Levine,Buckley and Dakis all booted three goals. Anthony Quon’s side will now go on the road to face the ‘Wellers while Ormond will host Mazenod.
Old Camberwell has prevailed over Old Ivanhoe in what proved to be the match of the round and is an early contender for game of the year, being easily the closest result so far.
With both sides coming off brilliant opening-round wins, they arrived at Chelsworth Park full of hunger to make it two from two and establish themselves as an early contender.
The game itself showed exactly that, with both sides cracking in hard, desperate for the ability to sustain the upper hand, although neither team was able to properly pull away all afternoon.
Allen provided plenty for the Wellers in a best-on-ground performance, that combined nicely with Hart’s four majors to see them home. As for the hosts, Scuderi slammed home four goals of his own, and Riddell was adjudged best afield.
Old Ivanhoe will carry some motivation into their next contest, which will come against the rested Old Carey on the road, while Old Camberwell will host the Rovers.
Mazenod has bounced back tremendously at home, pushing Marcellin to 0-2 on the back of a resounding 56-point win at Central Reserve North. The assault began with a mammoth ten-goal to-three first quarter! Which was remarkably backed up by a scoreless second term. With a 47-point lead already in their possession at halftime, the ‘Nodders were able to coast home kicking just five, a small total by their standards, in the second half to clinch the huge win.
Simon Abraham’s side will be disappointed with that result, but Posar can hold his head high, booting two goals in a best-on-ground performance for the visitors. On the other hand, Peter Banfield will be pumped, especially after seeing Peck’s showing, as well as the firepower of Caspersz.
Mazenod will now head to E.E Gunn Reserve to face the hot Ormond, while Marcellin will head to Gerry Green Reserve to face off with Parkdale who are also winless on the year.

PEGS have continued to enjoy life in Premier C, finding themselves another four points to maintain their spot atop the ladder with a 22-point win. Much like the Vultures’ first matchup in round one, this game had many ebbs and flows as the lead changed hands at each break throughout, but never climbed higher than two goals at any of them until the ladder leaders kicked away in the final term.
Parkdale were again gallant, coming out hard in the first quarter and then showing real grit to fightback in the third, but just could not hang with the hosts all day and unfortunately ran out of legs.
PEGS’ four goals to none in the fourth was the difference in an otherwise even contest, as Bales impressed alongside Simmons who finished with three majors. While for Owen Lalor, Yee was excellent alongside Phillips and Macdermid who added two goals each.
PEGS will now go into their bye week, while Parkdale search for their first win of the season at home against Marcellin.

It was a ‘festival of flags’ down at TH King Oval on Saturday as St Kevin’s unfurled three premiership flags while hosting four games back-to-back, including the Senior Men’s and Women’s teams for the first time this season. All four teams got the win to ensure the celebrations continued into the night.
Coburg first win
VAFA’s newest club, Coburg, won their first senior women’s game on Saturday, proving far too strong for Old Xaverians at Piranha Park, in what was also their first home game of the season. Meanwhile, Old Carey won their first women’s game since 2019 in what was a special occasion for the club.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Tahlia Limburg
The VAFA congratulates Tahlia Limburg from the Old Yarra Cobras on receiving the Round 2 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nomination from the weekend.
What the club said:
Tahlia joined the Yarra program determined to challenge herself and improve her football. She has seamlessly slotted into the club’s culture, and on the field, Tahlia provides a significant forward presence and pressure that creates opportunities for both herself and her teammates.
We put it on Tahlia coming into this week to focus on defensive pressure, and she delivered that in spades whilst also hitting the scoreboard. As a coaching group, we’re all very aware of what Tahlia is capable of, and the Rising Star nomination is the recognition she deserves.
Tahlia’s aerial contest work has been outstanding for a young key forward. The work she puts in off the ball, and her ground-level game is equally as impressive.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Oscar Duncan, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 2. Duncan was a key performer in Old Xaverians win over Old Melburnians, making his mark in the senior side in William Buck Premier Men’s.
What the club said:
Oscar has followed on from a fantastic Under 19 season in 2022, where he was part of the premiership side.
Senior coach James Byrne said, “Oscar thoroughly deserved his chance at senior football, after a few injury interruptions over pre-season. He is a young developing ruckman that works hard on his craft. Oscar is a student of the game and a keen learner, but most of all a huge competitor and loved by his teammates. He has great athleticism and skills for a tall player, and this is just reward for his commitment and work ethic.”

Tone is set by the Krushers as Prahran spoil the Westival
All tips right this week, which was one pleasing aspect, the other pleasing thing was the bright sunshine was out in full force in round 2 across all the suburbs, which created great day outs for players, such as Aaron Cloke who booted six goals against Ivanhoe AFC. With that all in mind let’s crack into the action and unpack the round just gone.
UHS-VU hosted an injury depleted Kew Bears on a cracking day at J.J Holland Park, the game was tightly contested all game with both teams throwing punches to get there team over the line.
Kew, led by Luka Argent and Tommy Conlan were instrumental for the Bears as they tried to wrestle back the momentum as they were left reeling goalless against division competitors Glen Eria in a mud bath.
UHS-VU were able to get there for most of the game having Hunt leading the way with a four goal haul which was enough to see UHS home. Can the winning ways for the boys of Uni High continue in Round 3 against Ivanhoe AFC?
Oakleigh took on newcomers Ivanhoe AFC and the Krushers did not disappoint.
Blasting out of the blocks early with five first quarter goals, the big name forwards in Aaron Cloke and Eddie Stanish put on a clinic all day at Ivanhoe Park. Cloke showing why he has still got it coming off seventy five goals last season and kicking six this week was a reason why he is up there as the premier forwards of Division 1.
Ivanhoe were not good enough to handle the juggernaut as they were left reeling with only one goal at half time. Names in the Krushers line up such as Grant, Nolan, Kitts all showed how to get the job done as Oakleigh started their season at 2-0 winning by 86 points. They head back to Scammell Reserve this Saturday to face Old Peninsula.
Therry Penola have started this season on fire as they make it two wins from two games. Facing the Preston Bullants at home, the Lions were on the backfoot as the Bullants started with the positive intent starting the game kicking four goals at quarter time.
It was after half-time where the rampaging Lions gained the ascendancy as they stormed to regain the lead by just over a goal. Ryan and Macgregor led the way for the Lions booting three goals individually to really get the game back on the Lions terms. And coming away with a victory and winning by 21 points.
West Brunswick hosted Prahran in the clubs annual Westival and the Magpies were aiming to make it 2 from 2 and start to build a solid foundation to start season 2023. A very slow first quarter with only one goal kicked between the two teams before Prahan with their star studded lineup looked to take it to the Magpies. Midfielder Matt Clifford once again big time player coming away with four majors as he and Musster, Martin and Plaza were greatly aided to help Prahran with the victory.
Calma-Holt led from the front for the Magpies with four goals as they fought out the game valiantly. The half-time margin was a bridge too far and continued to extend at each change. They’ll look to regroup, and bounce back this week when they face off against Therry Penola. Prahran heads to Packer Park to face off against the ladder leaders, Glen Eira.
The Gryphons set the tone against Old Peninsula with nine goals in the first half and opened up a 38 point lead at Harry McDonald Oval. Despite Old Peninsula winning the second half on the scoreboard, the damage had already been done.

Nine individual goalkickers for Glen Eira proved the depth, and spread they have in the forward line. Making them a damaging match up for opposition sides.
Bailey Payze is adjusting to senior footy without his dad seamlessly for the Pirates, another two goals on Saturday and named amongst the best players. Along with Thiele, Williamson, and Quint, while Stewart kicked three majors in a losing side.
Round 3 has three teams undefeated, and three teams without a win. Will we see the leaders at the front of the pack pull further away or the chasing group reel them back in?

Bag after bag a field day for forwards
Sunshine and rainbows as forwards relished the warm weather in a thrilling second round, but it was the Devils and Bloods that left a nasty scar in Division 2 Men’s.
“Consistency is key” is the motto for Whitefriars as they pull another extravaganza against Bulleen Templestowe. The Bullants came out of the gate rearing with a content 19 point led, but from the second quarter onwards it was Friars territory as they stretched the lead from three points to 21 to 34 by the final siren.
The Friars roster is filled to the brim with talent, Turner, Hands and Garrat turning the tide for the star studded squad. Young guns Patty Cotter and Matty Dickenson played their part with a convincing performance. The stars aligned for Wood booting bag after bag, the tally counters struggled to keep up, ultimately going home with nine goals by the final siren, and shooting ahead of the division’s goal tally.
Their adaptability and game day tactics have been successful in capitalising on their talented roster and it’s clear the Friars are consistent in wet weather and even more so in the sunshine.
Brunswick have pulled off another a marvel over the Old Yarra Cobras, with a 30 point win. Although the merger has produced a Cobras squad thick with depth, the chemistry behind Brunswick seemed to be the tipping point for their win. Early in Cobras talent proved difficult winning contests and stoppages from expert players, Dave Tokatliyan, Tim Orchard and big Anthony Lamanna, in partnership with goal magnet Margaritis, but ultimately it was Brunswick’s adaptability that triumphed.
VAFA.com.au
From the opening bounce to the final siren, Brunswick’s pressure never halted for a second. Small forward Gus Coverdal had a blinder slipping through tackles with tough physicality, Will McKenzie dipped his toes along the wing which only added to the hot and heavy pressure all over the ground. Harris Mitter proved his skill once more behind the footy, while Tom Wilson with three goals seems to be only getting started.
Overall, the on-field chemistry of the Cobras may take a bit of time as they progress through the season, but Coach Nathan Monaco has already done a fantastic job of player rotation and development, and the squad is evidently in safe hands.
The South Melbourne Districts asserted their dominance in a thumping 84-point win at Garvey Oval over Old Paradians. The first quarter set the tone for the remaining three as the bloods ran a six goal lead, which stretched further with every quarter.
Sfetkidis made use of the warm weather kicking five goals, in partnership with Andrew booting four. But it couldn’t have been so without the all-star performance of Brooker and Blanchfield. The Swans are two for two in both convincing performances, but the only question is, who is willing to compete for their reign atop the Division 2 Men’s ladder?
Parkside bounced back in round 2 with a 74-point thrashing over MHSOB. Round 1 rust hurt as they couldn’t quite convert their efforts to the scoreboard, but whatever goal kicking drills they practiced over the week translated effortlessly on game day. Familiar faces Hamilton and Romano led the way with their physicality and ball gets with star forward Radford sinking five goals.

The Unicorns have had a tough start to the season, but if they bring the heat to Aquinas next week it may serve as a foundation of confidence for the remaining year. Overall, a deadly accurate Parkside is something to be concerned about, and the Devils will be able to prove their worth against the Bloods next week in a huge blockbuster match.
A few injuries caused an upset Round 1, but the Aquinas are back and fired up from a 37-point win over St Mary’s Salesian. Dwyer once more demonstrated his talent capitalising on the warm weather with five goals, his accuracy proving to no match against the Aquinas College winds. Reid returned with a bang booting four, but it was the as per usual flair of Di Donato that drew the eyes of the crowd, and even goals on the scoreboard kicking three.
It’s been a tough start for St Mary’s struggling to get their foot in the door, but as the competition is heating up, it’s only going to get tougher. The bounce back from a Round 1 upset to Round 2 domination shows the bloods are indeed out for blood.

It was another thrilling round of footy as the eastern suburbs of Melbourne came alive with fierce competition and nail-biting finishes.
The Canterbury Cobras clashed with Hawthorn AFC at the Canterbury Sports Ground, where the two sides were neck and neck in the first half, with both teams scoring identical points at 28 and 54 in the first quarter and half time respectively.
However, the Cobras turned on the heat in the second half, dominating the Hawks with their impressive forward and defensive play, and winning the quarter by a whopping 32 points.
Tom Lowden and Jordan Dear leading the charge with their impressive goal-scoring abilities, the Cobras secured a well-deserved 31-point victory.
At the Holmes/Todd Oval, Elsternwick and Richmond Central faced off in a thrilling match. After losing in the first round, Elsternwick came out with a vengeance, but their inaccuracy in front of the goal proved costly.
Richmond, on the other hand, capitalized on their opportunities and scored six majors in the first quarter. However, Elsternwick rallied back in the second half, thanks to the heroic efforts of Eli Holland-Dean, who scored two vital goals.
Despite the valiant efforts of Benjamin Kreiger and Austin Creak for the Snakes, Elsternwick secured a hard-fought victory.
Over at the Ross Gregory Oval, the men from Power House continued their winning streak with a resounding victory over the Wattle Park Animals
Sharpshooter Michael Timmons was on fire with his four goals, while the team played with cohesion and energy. Though the Animals fought back in the latter half of the game, they couldn’t overcome the initial deficit and fell to the class of the competition, the men from Power House, by 40 points.
Nathan Bird was the standout performer for the Animals, earning the best-on-ground honors.
Lastly, the battle of the universities took place at the TS Sheehan Oval, with last year’s division four grand finalists, La Trobe University and Swinburne University, facing off against each other.
The game was a tight affair, with neither team scoring a goal in the first quarter. Swinburne took the lead in the second quarter, but La Trobe’s Luke Nelson stepped up and booted four goals to help his team regain the lead and secure the victory.
The hard-fought game saw La Trobe register their first win of the year, while Swinburne showed that the adjustment to the higher league can be challenging.
As the ladder stands, Power House tops the list with 200%, followed by the Canterbury Cobras, who are the only other 2-0 team, as they gear up for a semi-final redemption match against Elsternwick next week.

Close Games Galore as we move on to chapter 2: Momentum
Round 2 saw more even football across Division 4 Men’s. Three matches provided excitement and entertainment, with three winners adding wins to their record early but three losers who will need to regroup to turn the corner as they face tough tests next up.
The Falcons and Demons battled in a high-scoring affair, the Bulls and the Tigers battled in a very tough low scoring affair and St Johns and Sharks both looked to get their first win of the season.
The first match of the round saw the Albert Park Falcons face Box Hill North in what was set to be an unpredictable game. Both teams started incredibly strong with a combined seven goals for the quarter, yet it was the Falcons who held a small four-point lead heading into the second quarter. The Falcons then played the second on their term quite convincingly with a six-goal quarter to extend their lead out to 24 heading into the major break.
The Demons were able to turn up the heat in the third quarter as they kept the Falcons goalless whilst adding four goals of their own to take a one-point lead with one exciting quarter of football left to play. The Falcons turned on the jets in the 4th and flew away with the game with a four-goal to one final quarter where they completely captured the momentum of the game with both hands to fly away with a 20-point win, their first for the season.
After a great 2022 campaign, Jack Lee kicked off his season in incredible fashion with five majors, an effort also replicated by teammate Ashley Evans. For the Demons Mitch Lorkin had three snags whilst teammates Thomas Cheslett and Samuel Roberts had two goals each. The best for the Falcons were Zachary Freeman, Ethan Lockyer and Alexander Evans. The best for the Demons were Kristian Smythe, Mitch Lorkin and Rowan Lawrence.
Albert Park will now make the trip down to Dandenong North to take on the Tigers, a team that they had great battles with, in 2022. Box Hill North will look to rebound from this loss as they host St Johns in what is a big match for both sides.
The second game of the round saw top sides clash as North Brunswick faced off against Masala. The first quarter saw a very fast yet fairly low scoring 25 minutes of footy between the two sides. Whilst speed was the style of the quarter, it was the Bulls that held a small 14-point lead heading into the first break. The second quarter saw Masala gain a bit of momentum winning the quarter two goals to one and reducing the lead to eight points as they went into the major break.
The third quarter saw another fairly competitive quarter between both sides. Although the Bulls had six scoring shots to the two of the Tigers for the quarter, both teams were only able to kick two goals. As the siren sounded to end the third quarter it was the Bulls that had extended their lead out to 12 points after an intense quarter of football. The chapter of the round is momentum and the Bulls were able to demonstrate that in the fourth with three goals to Masala’s one, turning the game fully in their favour and in the process leaving with a 23-point win in an intense match.
Adam Tsardakis, Samuel Watt and Luke Rositani were amongst the best for the Bulls whilst the best for the Tigers were Jake Dunkley, Luke Pipolo and Jordan Gibbon. Jake Horwood and Jareth Ombia both kicked two majors for the Bulls. Sean Downes had the most goals on the day with 3 for Masala whilst teammate Brandon Kelly kicked 2.
North Brunswick will look to continue their winning ways as they now play host to Eley Park where they will look to add another win to the board. Masala will look to get back to their winning ways as they host Albert Park in round three.

The JOCs found themselves gaining all the momentum early after a mammoth six-goal first quarter to take an 18-point lead heading into quarter time. The second quarter saw both teams slow down a little bit with the Sharks kicking one goal to the JOCs’ two. This small advantage saw the JOCs have their lead extended to 21 points heading into the major break.
The third quarter saw the defence of both sides pick up with another low-scoring quarter as both teams only managed a goal. Heading into the final quarter with a 23-point lead it was the JOCs’ game to lose. Both teams showed some of their best in the final quarter with both teams kicking four goals each. Tom Buckley (Ormond AFC)
Grandson of former Ormond player Bruce Bourne and son of former Ormond player Martin Buckley, Tom Buckley plays 100 games for Ormond this week. Tom’s achievements include winning a senior Best and Fairest in 2014, captaining the senior team for seven seasons and captaining the senior premiership in 2018. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond on reaching this milestone.

Jack Firth (St Bernard’s)
Good Luck to Jack Firth on his 100th VAFA game this week. A Strathmore Junior ‘Firthy’ moved to ‘the pit’ in 2013 before progressing into open age footy in 2016. A popular clubman ‘Firthy’ has mixed Ressies and Thirds footy and become a bit of a cult figure with his goal sneak silky skills.

Charlie Vague (St Bernard’s)
Great to see Charlie Vague set to rack up his 100th Senior game this week. Another St Bernard’s Junior Charlie made his senior debut in round one of 2016 and during that season won VAFA State Under 19 Rep honours. A strong midfielder, Charlie’s ‘hard at it’ approach inspires his teammates and has enabled him to become a regular fixture in the Senior line up. We look forward to seeing Charlie add many more to that tally into 2023 and beyond.
Jack Wright (Ivanhoe AFC)
Ivanhoe AFC congratulates Jack Wright on his 100 th game for the Hoers in Round 2 (April 22).

“Herman” has been around the club since 2015 and is an absolute stalwart of the reserves. He plays mainly across half-forward and always presents a solid attack on the ball, with strong marking skills and plenty of back-up for teammates. Herman gives it 100 per cent off the field too - a top clubman who always rolls up the sleeves to help out at social functions and with some match-day roles if called upon. Thanks Herman. It’s blokes like you that make Ivanhoe a great club.

In his role as full-back, Zac takes on the most dangerous key forward every week, inspiring confidence in his teammates with his powerful spoils and unwavering commitment and courage. Off the field, Zac is a vital part of the Unicorns, tirelessly working a number of important roles on the committee. A true clubman, Zac makes MHSOBFC a better place for everyone.
Danny Jones (Ivanhoe AFC)
150
Ivanhoe AFC congratulates senior captain Danny Jones on his 150 th game for the club in Round 2 (April 22). Danny is a dual premiership captain, leading the club’s Under 19s to a flag in 2014 and the seniors to premiership glory in Division 2 last year. A feisty rover who leads from the front with gut-running four-quarter efforts, Danny won the club’s senior B&F in 2021 and also won a competition B&F in Under 19s (North) in 2014. He sets a shining example to younger teammates and recruits on and off the track. Keep your motor running Danny!

Coburg roar to first win as Kew, Collegians & SKOB roll on
Round two of William Buck Premier Women’s proved to be an interesting one and has set up some blockbusters for round three, as some teams announced themselves as serious threats to St Kevin’s quest for a three-peat, whilst others failed to fire.
In what was tipped to be an entertaining battle between two of last year’s best sides, Kew defeated Caulfield Grammarians by 36 points, doubling their score. The game was close for the first half, with Kew only leading by 11 points at quarter time. However, Kew turned the jets on in the second half, allowing Kew to kick only 2.2 for the rest of the game.
Lily Barr and Laura Mayne were two of Kew’s best, kicking three goals each, whilst Catia Cococcia was a clear best on. For Caulfield, Maggie Minchin and Chloe O’Malley both kicked a goal each to be two of their best.
Kew now sit at the top of the ladder and will come up against Collegians next week and both will be coming off the back of wins. Caulfield will take on Fitzroy at Brunswick Street and will be looking for a win, after a tough two weeks to start the season.
Wow – what a massive second game for the new Coburg Lions, beating Old Xavs by 105 points in a dominant showing and ultimately a warning to the competition of what to expect from the Lions this season.
Playing on their home deck for the first time, Coburg showed that they will be tough to play, particularly at Piranha Park this season. Old Xavs never showed much fight and faced a tough day out, being held scoreless after quarter time.
The Lions had six individual goalkickers, with Mangan kicking five goals, whilst Zayat was best on ground and Crowe led from the front for Xavs. It’ll be an intriguing game next weekend when the fourth placed Lions come up against the third placed St Kevin’s. Meanwhile, Xavs will play West Brunswick at home.
It was an extremely close game between Collegians and Old Scotch, with Scotch’s inability to capitalise in the first half ultimately costing them the game.
After not kicking a goal in the first quarter, Collegians came out on top for the rest of the game to kick 2.3 and snatch their second win of the season, ensuring Scotch only scored one goal after quarter time.
With neither team scoring in the fourth quarter, it was a hard slog to the finish line in an evenly matched contest. Georgia Fraser Smith was best on ground for Scotch whilst Abbie Connor kicked both of their goals. For Collegians, Freya Parker was best on.
Collegians come up against Kew next week in one of the games of the round and will be hoping to hold onto their undefeated start to the season as they now find themselves in second position, proving they belong in the premier division. For Scotch, they’ll play Melbourne Uni, with both teams searching for their second win.
After West Brunswick and Fitzroy suffered heavy defeats last weekend, both teams proved to be a lot more competitive in round two.
Recognition must be given to Fitzroy, who proved gallant in defeat and would be proud of their efforts this weekend, after failing to record a score against Kew last week.
It was an evenly matched contest for the first half, however, a strong third quarter from West Brunswick ultimately cost Fitzroy the game, scoring three goals to Fitzroy’s one, to push the margin to 16 points. However, Fitzroy mounted a late comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring three goals to make the final margin only 12 points.

Sunday Brisbane was best on ground for Fitzroy and scored one goal, whilst Kristy De Pellegrini was clearly best on ground, scoring three goals for West Brunswick.
Fitzroy will come up against Caulfield next weekend in what will be a tough game, whilst West Brunswick will play Old Xavs.
As they unfurled their premiership flag in front of a home crowd, St Kevin’s reminded everyone why they are one of the best teams in the competition, knocking off Melbourne Uni by 30 points in what potentially could’ve been an even bigger deficit had they kicked straight.
St Kevin’s only allowed Melbourne Uni to kick eight points for three quarters of the game and asserted their dominance over the contest early, kicking 32 points for the first half. However, Melbourne Uni defended well in the third quarter, as St Kevin’s only kicked one goal.
Bree Doyle continued her fine form from last year, taking out best on ground for the game, whilst Sarah Betts also backed up her own strong performance from last weekend. Asha Price kicked Melbourne Uni’s two goals, whilst Victoria Holt was their best.
St Kevin’s will play Coburg next weekend in what should prove to be an interesting match following Coburg’s dominance this week, whilst Melbourne Uni will be searching for a win against Old Xavs.

Cobras slither their way to the top as Monash give Bedes the Blues
With the rain drying up over the weekend, it was ideal weather for some rivalry and stellar football in round 2 of Premier B Women’s.
After a week of pure success last week, the Monash Blues took on St Bedes/Mentone Tigers who were coming off a bye in round 1. The salty sea air in Mentone set the scene for a game full of surprises. The Tigers had an impressive first quarter, kicking three goals against the Blues one. They had viewers under the impression that the game was theirs, but unfortunately, after two terms of powerful and relentless defending, the Blues dug deep mustering up the energy to score a whopping 22 points, creating a ten-point margin in the final scores.
With so much skill and determination picking just a single player was out of the question. With remarkable accuracy, it was Courtney Ward, Madeline Pearson and Victoria Kovacevic who obtained one goal each for the Tigers working with their best players such as Tayla Mcalroy.
The Blues pulled through with a last-minute triumph due to the prowess in goalkicking of Alicia Myers, Ainslee Elliott, Molly Mcfarlene and Sarah-Jade Rose each scoring one goal. Players such as Brooke Pontor displayed outstanding dependability earning herself best on field.
In round 3, both teams will be playing at their home grounds. The Tigers will encounter the venom of the Old Yarra Cobras and the Blues will experience the superhuman strength of the Hawthorn Hawks.
Hawthorn went into round 2 with their heads held high after using their fantastic senses to obtain their first win of the season. Sometimes all you need is the comfort of your own home, but for Brunswick who travelled to the Hawks nest, that was not the case.
From the first quarter, Brunswicks energy was promising, earning 25 points to Hawthorn›s 7. In the second term, Brunswick kept the fire in their bellies obtaining another 15 points, with Hawthorn doing their best to keep up but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.
Accuracy was a downfall for both teams with 5 behinds for the Hawks and 7 behinds for Brunswick but with a 32-point difference between final results Brunswick secured their first win for the season.
Although Hawthorn experienced a loss, Jamie Hewitt and Laura Castleden scored their first goals for the season and Charlotte Karnini-Parsons was judged best player.
The triumphant win for Brunswick could not have been achieved without team members such as leading goalkicker Jessica Briggs who scored two goals and Larisa Dumitriu who demonstrated a best-player performance.
Will Hawthorn have better luck again at the grounds of mighty Monash Blues in round 3? Can Brunswick create a victory streak with a home match, against Mazenod OC?
After a tough loss from both Mazenod OC and North Brunswick, it was on the home roots of Mazenod the two went head-to-head. It was an incredible game for Mazenod and unfortunately quite the opposite for North Brunswick.
Mazenod was irrepressible kicking a total of seven goals and 13 behinds, starting off slow but steady and flourishing in the third and fourth terms. This was a considerable effort in comparison to their total of eight points in last week’s match.
Feeling unfamiliar with their surroundings it was a tough game for North Brunswick who walked away feeling disheartened unfortunately being unable to make their mark. With stand-out players such as best on-field Mary Ntalianis, it is with hope that North Brunswick can come back in round four, after a bye and acquire a welldeserved win.
With many of the Mazenod team players displaying exceptional goal-kicking attributes, it was goal-kicking machine Lara Del Conte who scored three goals working alongside best player Claudia Macguire paving the pathway to success.
Mazenod is set to travel to the home of the buoyant Brunswick Football Club, taking on Brunswick’s other representative team.

Two teams coming down from a win last week undertook a battle of creating a winning streak in round two upon the habitat of the Old Yarra Cobras. It was a game where accuracy was once again the biggest downfall for both teams with Richmond kicking four behinds and the Cobras kicking eight.
But it was the Cobras who brought their A-game this week producing a 34-point margin between the final scores. Leading goal scorer for the Cobras Iliana Zarfiriou, who was on fire, attaining three goals and with the assistance of best on-field Alyssa Bernado.
Richmond pushed themselves to the best of their abilities scoring a total of three goals but unfortunately were out of depth on this occasion. Julie Dortmans was best for Richmond, while Ashleigh Finn, Stefanie Talarico and Laura Quinton kicked one goal each. Richmond will come headto-head with the ambitious Aquinas OC next week who are coming off a bye.
With the Cobras slithering their way to the top of the ladder they are left to muster up their best defensive mechanism at the home of the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers to maintain their dominance.
Making the Cobra community proud is Iliana Zafiriou who was in the lead last week, and still sitting very comfortably on top with seven goals, followed by teammate Tahlia Limburg with four goals. Brunswick’s Jessica Briggs is in third place with three goals, followed by Hawthorn›s Kayla May Smith in fourth place and the Blues› Molly McFarlane in fifth also on three goals.

Signs are ominous at Old Xaverians
Round 2 was special for all players, coaches, and spectators involved. The league paid homage to the ANZAC’s under the gentle autumn sun.
Another competitive round in Holmesglen U19 Premier Mens’s has solidified that this section will produce the VAFA’s future stars. The reigning premier are now 2-0, but many sides look hot on their tail.
Old Brighton def. Caulfield Grammarians by 25 points
Old Brighton was able to secure the victory at home by 25 points in nearly picture-perfect conditions. The first half was a tug of war affair, both sides entering the main break 36 points apiece. Caulfield fought well but their local rival was able to break away in the final term. J. Freedman, H. McInerney, S. McInerney, J. Pinder, J. Iverson & L. White did all they could to try drag Caulfield over the line. Z. Bowen booted 3 majors for the Tonners whilst K. Dimattina, T. Howden, L. Travers, J. Campigli, J. Lohan & T. Jackett-Simpson were judged the best afield.
Caulfield will go up against the reigning premiers in Xavier next Saturday. Old Brighton will travel to T H King Oval to square up against St. Kevins.
Williamstown CYMS def by. St. Kevins by 47 points SKOB came, saw, and conquered the CYs at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. St. Kevins demonstrated they mean business this season in what was a convincing team performance. Williamstown will be disappointed to start their campaign 0-2 but have shown year after year they are capable of being finals contenders. Internally and externally, they are expected to bounce back strongly. Though Z. Provest was able to convert 6 goals in a losing side. O. Gill, W. Pfeiffer, J. Romanin, A. Butler & J. Conquest produced dominant individual performances for St. Kevins. J. Palmer & G. Delimitrou also combined for 6 majors.
St. Kevins will host Old Brighton at home in round 3 in what could be the game of the round. Whilst Williamstown will trek across the bridge to face De La Salle. Williamstown will aim to rectify their form.
Old Xaverians def. St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 4 points
A youthful SBMT outfit were outstanding against the reigning premier on Saturday. Though they fell short in the final term, their performance in the first three quarters was commendable. Xavier was able to lock the ball down and secure a 4 point victory. Jack Behnk continued his stellar form by slotting 6 majors. He is now the leading goal kicker
Bailey Berry
of the competition, sitting at 13. T. Meakins, L. Parsons, B. Bawden, X. Russo & Z. Winter were all admirable in what was a modest defeat.
Xavs will face Caulfield in round 3 which will be a good test for both sides. SBMT will aim to continue their strong start when they go up against Old Scotch at Brindisi St in the prime time 2pm slot.
University Blues def. Old Scotch by 29 points
The gut running Blues were able to overthrow Scotch by 29 points on the weekend. Scotch started the match well, but Uni were able to run over the top on their home deck. They utilised their skills and fitness in an impressive second half, only allowing Scotch to score 11 points. R. Beckworth, L. Harker, J. Gale, H. Robenstone, W. Hucker & J. Harker dictated the play for the away side. J. Harrington snagged 3 for Uni in an impressive performance. L. Wylie, W. Preston, I. Dykes, H. Meggitt & O. Scalzo were the best afield for University Blues.
Uni will travel to Essendon to face St. Bernards this coming Saturday whilst Scotch will take on St. Bedes at Brindisi St, Mentone.
St. Bernards def by. De La Salle by 32 points
De La Salle prevailed at the snake pit this past weekend. They pounced on St. Bernards with a 5 goal first quarter and didn’t look back. The home team suffered a monstrous defeat last week and aimed to secure a win this week, unfortunately falling short by 32 points. De La are now 2-0 and will look to continue their impressive form going to round 3. P. Russell, S. Filipovic, J. Miller, L. Healy & L. Liakakos were best afield for De La, supported by L. Lloyd with 5 majors.
St. Bernards will remain at home to face Uni Blues this week, both teams have been impressive thus far. De La will aim to triumph over Williamstown who have struggled to secure a win this season.
