Themed Games –our community focus
I was asked the other day by a non-football person to describe the competition that I work for. I rattled off the VAFA’s key metrics of:
(i) largest senior community football league in Australia (ii) largest women’s football league in Australia (iii) over 12,500 participants
(iv) 67 Clubs
(v) 303 teams
(vi) over 500 umpires, and (vii) operating across 23 Local Government Areas.
When I was then pushed to say what makes the VAFA so different from other Leagues, apart from the values of Amateur status, responsible alcohol measures, and codes of conduct, it was the focus and connection that our Clubs and Association have with our respective communities and supporting the causes that are important to them, which was an element that I believe sets the VAFA apart.
The VAFA have four official themed rounds during the year with key focuses:
Jason ReddickCEOVAFA Umpire round is next to kick off on the weekend of 4th May, and we look forward to Clubs extending their hospitality with pre-game and/or post game acknowledgements of our umpires who are integral and valued members of our competition.
BCNA round is celebrated on May 11th and 12th, in line with traditional Mother’s Day weekend. I, along with BCNA Director and VAFA Board member, Vicki Durston, will be heading to Canterbury FC on the weekend prior, to be involved in their plans to celebrate BCNA at their Club›s women’s day event.
The VAFA have four official themed rounds during the year with key focuses
• Tackle Your Feelings (TYF) – Mental Health;
• Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) – Women’s cancer treatment, care and support;
• Umpire appreciation round – respect and connection between umpires and Clubs, coaches, players and spectators;
• Transport Accident Commission (TAC) – road safety for our youth;
It’s wonderful to see how our Clubs embrace and celebrate these rounds. Last weekend, St Mary’s Salesian were a standout, having conducted a TYF session during the week with the U19 players attended by ambassador Dylan Buckley. The U19 team then took to the field in specially purchased TYF designed guernseys for their game against Collegians. There were another 10 VAFA Clubs who also took up the opportunity to make presentations of TYF medals to best on ground players as judged by the opposition coach.
In addition to the official theme rounds, VAFA support and promote Clubs who are celebrating themes at various times of the year, including ANZAC, First Nations, Pride, MND, Volunteer recognition, etc. according to their own home game calendar of events.
President Nick Heath hosted me at the Beaumaris FC›s ANZAC themed game against old Haileybury last weekend, where Club historian Rod Nicholson provided a captivating history of how retired servicemen were the founders of the Beaumaris Club some 60 years ago, and the stories of the various Beaumaris people who have served their nation in the armed services. With the President of the local RSL reciting the ode and a bugle player delivering the last post, the Club delivered a fitting tribute.
This week I will join Collegians President Andrew Keneally at their Club›s traditional ANZAC themed game against Old Scotch, and I am aware of other Clubs like De La Salle that also have significant ANZAC activities planned for this weekend.
In the last 18 months, I have had the privilege of attending Richmond Central›s First Nations day, Hawthorn Amateur›s ‹Wings› mental health day and Fitzroy Women’s Pride day. I look forward to joining more Clubs in their themed celebrations this season as they are a key essence of what makes our VAFA Clubs so unique.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S
Only 3 teams still undefeated in William Buck Premier Men’s
Round 2 of William Buck Premier Men’s saw three teams remain undefeated, including last year’s runner-up, who got the better of the team that beat them for the 2023 title.
ST KEVINS & COLLEGIANS were locked in a tight struggle for most of the day.
The Lions were held goalless in the opening term to trail by 14 points at the first change, before booting 6 goals in the second quarter to lead by a goal at the main break.
That got out to a 20-point advantage before SKOBs responded to lead by 6 points at 3-quarter time.
The final term was tight - St Kevins with the only 2 goals to run out 19 point winners & consign Collegians’ premiership defence to a 0-2 start.
Anthony LYNCH (St Kevins): “It was a terrific gusty win - full of character at a venue we have historically struggled to win at.
We were pretty strong on our players at half time and challenged them to respond - and they did.
We went 20 points down, but our boys responded with pressure and competitiveness and we started winning critical contests.
To see this young group be at their best in the final 45 minutes when truly challenged for the second week in a row fills me and hopefully them with incredible belief.”
Jordie McKENZIE (Collegians): “Another tight contested game. We played some exciting fast footy at times, and had our chances. St Kevin’s composure in critical moments stood out, and they played large periods of the game in their half.
Whilst disappointing, we were much improved in the contest and the boys gave it their all.
Ben HILL had an impressive debut, providing some spark up forward with 2 goals. Another emerging player, Jasper DAVY, was huge down back, playing his best game for the club.”
OLD SCOTCH overcame an 11-point quarter-time deficit to overpower Premier Men’s newcomers FITZROY by 59 points at Camberwell Sportsground .
The Cardinals took control of the game with an impressive 7-goal second term to hold a 27-point half time lead, before the Roys rallied to close within 9 at the last change.
Goals were hard to come by early in the final quarter, with just 2 in the first 15 minutes - both to Old Scotch.
Fitzroy closed to within 16 points entering time-on, before the Cardinals blew the game open with 7 goals in 13 minutes to give their percentage a massive boost and elevate them to the top of the table.
Mark GNATT (Old Scotch): “Fitzroy’s pressure was very good early and they were more efficient in front of goal.
We identified clear areas of improvement at quarter-time and Izzy CONWAY was dominant in the second term.
Fitzroy were the better side in the third quarter and won the territory battle. Our defence held up strongly - Doug LAWRENCE & Charlie CORMACK were well supported by BROWN, BRADDY & BENNETT.
We finished strongly with our fitness enabling us to hit the line hard as Angus SYMONS lit up the forward line and Will CLARK got some reward for effort.”
Travis RONALDSON (Fitzroy): “We started well - ball movement crisp, high energy and pressure. But we need to improve our second quarters & ensure our concentration remains high throughout the game.
Our backline was outstanding again, led by Darcy LOWRIE and Rhy SEAKINS Laird RAMSHAW provided drive from the wing.
We have to focus on improving every week. We had 10 players with less than 15 senior games under their belt and we have to fast-track their development to execute 4 quarters of A-grade level footy every week.”
OLD XAVERIANS returned to Toorak Park for the first time in a yearand-a-half and scored a hard-fought win over OLD MELBURNIANS in an entertaining contest.
Little separated the teams through the opening three quarters. OM’s led by 4 & 12 points at the first two breaks, before 4 consecutive goals saw Xavs lead by a goal at 3-quarter time.
The home team broke it open in the last term, slamming on 6 goals to 1 to run out 32-point winners in a game that felt much tighter than the final margin.
Dan DONATI (Old Xavs): “Another physical and quick game. Great to be back playing at TP after 18 months!
The first half was an arm-wrestle with some execution mistakes under great pressure.
I thought we managed to nullify OM’s key players as well as we could’ve on the day. To get those match-ups right helped us get the W.
Very even team performance & it was hard to nominate best players, such was the team effort across the board.”
Paul SATTERLEY (OMs): “Disappointed with how we finished off & full credit to Xavs, who ran out the game and really stepped up their offence in the last quarter.
We just didn’t maximise our scoring opportunities when we felt we had some control earlier in the game.
Standout performances from Ben HARDING, Jackson PAINE & Ned NICHOLS.”
UNI BLUES got on the board for 2024 with a thrilling win over ST BERNARDS that had the raucous crowd roaring all afternoon.
The Snowdogs threatened to take control after a 5-goal second quarter handed them a 13-point half-time lead.
Enter Sam GRIMLEY. The Blues’ spearhead came to life in the third term, booting 4 for the quarter as the home team edged in front by a point at the last change.
Just one point separated the teams before Geordie LaCAVA booted the sealer at the 28-minute mark of the final term to give the Blues an entertaining 7 point win.
GRIMLEY finished with 5 goals to be named the SKINS Player of the Day. His 12 goals in 2 weeks have handed him an early 6-goal lead in the League goalkicking race.
Guy MARTYN (Uni Blues): “Our first half was poor in terms of decisionmaking & skill execution. We made a couple of set-up changes at half time and our guys lifted their attack on the contest after a wake-up call.
Big credit to Sam HAYES who was influential in the ruck all day. I also loved Mitch TAYLOR’S game - his last quarter especially, when he was taken to the goal square and made a couple of goal-saving efforts.
I was really impressed with St Bernards’ intensity and pressure. I know they’re a young side, but if they play like that every week, they’ll win plenty of games and well and truly stay up in A grade.”
Steve ALESSIO (St Bernards): “A fantastic contest - a real arm-wrestle on a heavier ground, which led to a contested-style of game. The lead changed a few times, but in the end the top-end talent of Uni Blues stepped up at the right time.
Another great performance by our captain Mitch HUGHES and the continued good form of Karan BHARATHI, the DI LIZIO brothers & OVERMAN brothers was very pleasing.”
OLD BRIGHTON improved to 2-and-0 with a thrilling 9-point win over UNIVERSITY BLACKS at Brighton Beach Oval.
Blacks led by a kick at the first change, before the Tonners slammed on 5 goals in 19 minutes in the second term to jump out to a 2-goal half-time lead.
Blacks kicked the only two goals of the third quarter to level the scores at the last change.
Old Brighton seized the early initiative with a goal in the opening minute of the final quarter, before Blacks responded midway through the term.
Nick PAVLOU snapped the sealer entering time-on with a piece of individual brilliance out of a stoppage that saw the Tonners hold on for a gritty 9-point win as Uni Blacks fell short in a tight game for a second straight week.
Marcel BRUIN (Old Brighton): “Tough day. Really pleased with the maturity of our group to grind out a win. Blacks are really strong and well structured, particularly around the contest and work incredibly hard to put pressure on. They impacted our execution when we did win the ball.
There were some moments from individuals that probably swung the game our way. Nick PAVLOU in his first game back at the club in a couple of years had a massive impact.”
Dale BOWER (Uni Blacks): “Old Brighton are a tough ask at home - they have a very talented group of players that play the game in a fast and physical way.
We needed to bring our best contest and pressure game to the table. I was very proud of how our players committed to the task and we were in it right to the end, but could not quite get it done.
A step forward for us.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
Old Yarra Cobras exact their revenge as stalwarts of the competition continue to take charge
Round 2 in William Buck Premier Women’s saw Old Yarra Cobras get their revenge in the Premier B Grand Final rematch against Monash Blues, whilst two teams, Caulfield Grammarians and West Brunswick, were held goalless.
Proceedings kicked off on Saturday morning, with Kew travelling to Glen Huntly Park to take on Caulfield Grammarians. Kew came out of the blocks firing, kicking four unanswered goals in the first term. Caulfield did well to slow the attack from Kew in the second, only allowing the Bears one point for the quarter, but they failed to capitalise themselves, kicking just two behinds.
Kew took control again in the second half, stopping Caulfield from hitting the scoreboard, while extending the margin out to 39 points by the final siren. Charlie Anderson and Isobel Hartog battled valiantly for Caulfield, while Alana Sarec and Amelia Dawborn played key roles in Kew’s victory.
For the next match up of the day, Collegians hosted St Kevins at Ross Gregory Oval, where they were unable to trouble St Kevins, going down by 38 points.
St Kevins did damage early, taking a 23-point lead into the first break, however, Collegians fought back in the second term, winning the quarter by five points. Collegians were unable to maintain their momentum in the second half, only scoring another two behinds for the day, while allowing St Kevins another 22 points.
Ever-reliable Bree Doyle was the pick of the bunch for St Kevins, while Kate Stanton, Sarah Cameron and Hannah Smith also impressed with 2 goals each. For Collegians, Ash Bertagno and Aine Bennett did what they could to keep game from blowing out.
Meanwhile at Piranha Park, it was the fairytale ending for Coburg when they came from behind to beat Melbourne University by 21 points. The first three quarters were an arm wrestle with respective margins of 1, 2 and 4 points at each break, Melbourne University with the lead each time. Determined to not repeat the previous week’s mistakes, Coburg turned things around in the final term, scoring four unanswered goals to seal the win.
Julia McArdle and Mia D’Agostino led the comeback for Coburg, while Kayle Peake and Brooke Randall got the coach’s votes for Melbourne University.
Over at McAlister Oval, Old Scotch put a dampener on West Brunswick’s ‘Westival’ festivities, toppling the home side by 43 points.
It was an impressive performance by the Stars, whose defence proved impenetrable, disallowing the Magpies a single goal for the day. It was only in the third term that the Magpies managed to match Old Scotch, with both sides registering just one behind.
Nadia von Bertouch is proving to be a very handy addition to Old Scotch’s side, while Millie Fraser-Smith (2 goals) and Eloise Defina (3 goals) continued to show their prowess in front of goals.
Despite being a tough day at the office for West Brunswick, co-captains Kristy De Pellegrini and Sophie Stewart stood tall at opposite ends.
The final match of the round saw Old Yarra Cobras host Monash Blues for the 2023 Premier B Grand Final rematch, with the Cobras coming away with the chocolates on this occasion.
Old Yarra had the upper hand all day but were able to really bust the game open in the final term, doubling their three-quarter-time score to win by 64 points.
Cecilia Baldassarre was clearly best on ground, ending the day with a haul of six goals, but she was well supported by teammates such as Erin Woodford, Belinda Wriedt and Mikalya Lee. For Monash, Eliza Grills had a standout performance, while Alicia Myers was solid again in defence.
The absence of 2023 Premier B Women’s best and fairest winner, Ainslee Elliott, has left a noticeable gap in the Blues side so far this year, asking the question of who can step up in her place.
Round 3 in William Buck Premier Women’s comprises of five fascinating match ups, with similarly placed sides all scheduled to meet.
To kick things off, Caulfield will host Collegians, with both sides having lost to top teams in Round 2. Caulfield will be desperate to hit the scoreboard after not managing a goal this week, however, Collegians’ defence won’t make it easy for them.
Next up, Kew will travel to TH King Oval to battle it out with St Kevins in the Grand Final rematch. This promises to be the match of the round, with both teams looking unstoppable again this season. Which side will be the first to fall short?
Meanwhile at Camberwell Sportsground, Old Scotch will host Coburg. No team has looked to concern Old Scotch so far this year, but Coburg will feel better about their chances after turning things around against Melbourne University this week.
For the penultimate match, Monash Blues and West Brunswick will face off in a twilight classic at Frearson Oval, with both teams desperate to score their first win of the season. With more experience at the top level, the Magpies should feel confident going into this game, however, the home ground advantage could help to sway things in the Blues’ favour.
Finally, Melbourne University will host Old Yarra Cobras on the Sunday afternoon, in what is anticipated to be a tight contest. Melbourne University will be hungry to taste success after two close losses, however, Old Yarra should be propelled by their first win in the Premier Competition.

PREMIER B MEN’S
Trinity continue to impress in Premier B Men’s
Donald McDonald and Old Trinity have enjoyed the perfect start to 2024, following a Round 1 defeat over Old Haileybury, with a romp over St Bedes/Mentone. As mentioned in last week’s column, consistent appearances from now-fit midfielders Alex Emery and Christos Manoussakis have done Trinity the world of good, as has Hugo McGlashan’s return from playing in Coburg’s VFL team last season.
Forward Jack Jenkins is another who McDonald is enthused to see taking to the park every weekend after an injury-interrupted 2023 season. “He kicked four and did a really good job for us,” said McDonald on Monday morning. McGlashan also booted four, while Emery and Dom Payman (three goals each) did the scoreboard damage for Old Trinity, who established a 35-point advantage at quarter time on the way to the 21.6 (132) to 8.10 (58) win. Lachie Palfrey and stalwart Josh Cowan tried hard for the Tigers, while last week’s Anytime Fitness Rising Star Jack Behnk potted two goals.
Trinity’s clash this Saturday with De La Salle looms as an earlyseason blockbuster, two of the three undefeated Premier B sides booked for a Waverley Oval tussle. It looms as a “measuring stick” for Donald McDonald’s men. “It’s a really good benchmark game for us, just to see how we measure up against a team and a club that we really respect - especially at their ground,” he said.
A hamstring injury to spearhead Joseph Nowell in the final minutes of the match has soured an otherwise perfect afternoon for Beaumaris, the Sharks charging clear of Old Haileybury in a 16.5 (101) to 8.10 (58) victory at Banksia Reserve. Nowell, Beaumaris’ best with seven goals, has started 2024 in mighty form - so much so senior coach Josh Bourke has begun to “plant the seed” with VFL track-watchers on his hulking key forward.
But the Sharks will be without Nowell for the short-term at least, with a late hamstring injury leaving Bourke and crew crossing their fingers for a positive assessment with Old Camberwell, Caulfield and Old Ivanhoe ahead. “It didn’t look great,” Bourke said of the injury on Sunday night, adding that Nowell has no hamstring injury history. Expect the Sharks to find a way to roll ruck Callum Heath forward, at least in stints, with Nowell unavailable.
For Old Haileybury, coach Daniel Ward will focus on system during the week, with his squad having “a bit of work to do” to play the brand of football it wants to. “We were beaten by a group that was cleaner and more productive going forward,” he said. It’s bad news for vice-captain Brodie Steele, with the versatile defender out “for a significant amount of time” with a shoulder injury. Will Paul, currently out with a shoulder injury of his own, looms as a like-for-like replacement for Steele. Ward is confident Old Haileybury will open its 2024 account soon, his side more than capable of creating scoring opportunities but needing to use the ball more effectively when going inside 50, and then applying
more pressure on the opposition in transition.
At Glen Huntly Park, De La Salle started white-hot with the wind but grappled through the middle of the game with a surging Caulfield Grammarians outfit, De La finding its feet late to hold on 9.6 (60) to 7.8 (50) winners. Kicking with what De La coach Nick Hyland surmised as a “three-goal wind” to start the match, the visitors leapt to a 24-0 lead at the first break, the likes of wingman Campbell Bedford and silky midfielder Christian Algeri well on top.
The Grammarians though dominated the second and third quarters, young ruckman Oliver Ruddock providing first use for the home squad’s clearance corps, but Guy McKenna’s side were left to rue its goal-less start. “You can’t give any side a head start like that - at any level,” McKenna said on Monday morning.
Defender-turned-midfielder Jono Moren, ably assisted by insideoutside centreman Dylan Ting, gave the Grammarians clean ball use but the likes of Sean Fisher and Will McKinnon won back the ball for De La, splitting key defensive contests and intercepting at will. Despite the slow start, McKenna was impressed by his team’s ability to go the distance in the club’s second successive close loss. “The fact that we can finish stronger than the other team…we haven’t been able to play 120 minutes of footy in a long time,” he said.
The Grammarians will keenly anticipate key forward Jasper Rouget’s return, the spearhead managing week-to-week knee soreness, while for De La it’s a 2-0 start in an exceptionally even Premier B competition. “Starting the year well is crucial,” said Nick Hyland. “When you’re up and going, you need to make the most of your momentum.”
Anson Brownless’ Old Camberwell squad is humming, having overcome a scoreless opening term with six goals in the second on its way to victory over Williamstown CYMS. There’s no sign of the bends for the Wellers, having made a stunning rise to Premier B from Division 1 since 2021, the club now 2-0 this year after defeating the CYs 15.8 (98) to 11.6 (72).
Harry Laukens was in a mood, booting eight of his side’s fifteen goals, catching out even his coach with his performance. “We all thought five or six, he’s kicked a few,” said Anson Brownless. “It was one of those games where you go, ‘wow, he’s kicked eight!’” He’s a beauty, he keeps improving every week.” A massive pre-season has enabled Laukens to make the most of his opportunities in a wide-open forward line, with stablemate Harry McColl pushing further up the field and making use of his sure hands and clean leap.
Brownless lauded the performances of Lachie Powell (who switched from his typical role forward to one in defence) and lastline backman Kellan Percy in the defensive half, while the efforts of vice-captain Jimmy Allen on the ball were cited as the “main
reason we turned it around” by Brownless. Oskar Manton was named best afield for the CYs with two goals, while Harrison Miller and Will Smyth added two goals of their own.
Old Ivanhoe has levelled its ledger at 1-1 with a fourth-quarter breakaway at Como Park, handing Old Geelong its first loss of 2024, 14.7 (91) to 9.7 (61). Much like last week’s match against Old Camberwell, the Hoers were forced into a match-long arm wrestle with the Cats with sunshine beating down on the expanses of Como Park.
Jarrod Gieschen’s men held firm under pressure, before scooting home in a six-goal-to-one final term. The Old Ivanhoe coach lauded an “outstanding” performance from Toby McLean in his second outing for the club, with the ex-Western Bulldog’s inside work a highlight, while defender Sam Keogh was exceptional in the final quarter. “Keeping a good team like Geelong to nine goals on a big ground, in good conditions, was a great effort,” said Gieschen.
Old Geelong senior coach Nathan Brown joined Gieschen in admiration of McLean’s day out. “He was so clean - whatever he touched turned into gold.” Luke Scuderi booted four goals for Old Ivanhoe, while Trent McManus returned to the senior squad after time away playing cricket in India, with livewire small forward Rohan McKenzie suiting up for the Northern Bullants in the VFL after three goals last week.
For Old Geelong, it looms as a big week on the track, with Nathan Brown noting that while the five-goal margin didn’t necessarily reflect the quality of the contest, his side had “so many missing parts”. Harrison Kol kicked three goals, while Ed Hayne is getting “better and better”. Brown noted the performance of Old Ivanhoe ruck Oliver Hayes-Brown, a Category B Rookie with Richmond, who was a handful for the Geelong midfield. “He was excellent, a great pick-up for them. He’s huge and he’s really team-oriented,” said Brown.
In the other Round 3 fixtures, Old Camberwell will host Beaumaris in what should be a belter at Gordon Barnard Reserve, Old Haileybury and Williamstown CYMS will hope to open their respective accounts in Caulfield, Old Ivanhoe will take on St Bedes/Mentone at Chelsworth Park and Old Geelong will travel to Glen Huntly Park for a meeting with the Caulfield Grammarians.

Westbourne Grammarians return to the VAFA with fury
Round 2 of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition brought some big contests, unexpected victories, and standout performances across the board. The home ground advantage proved to be more of a disadvantage this round with all home teams being defeated by their visitors.
In a solid clash that showcased the unpredictability of sport, underdogs Westbourne Grammarians brought home the choccies after defeating Aquinas 34-11, who secured 3rd place in the 2023 season. Westbourne, making their debut in the league after a hiatus, displayed true grit and talent.
The game remained scoreless in the 1st and 3rd quarters, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish. However, it was in the final quarter that Westbourne made their mark, kicking 3 crucial goals to seal the victory.
Hannah McMahon was as a standout player, kicking 2 pivotal goals that propelled her team to success. Meg Dargan was also a notable force for Aquinas, kicking a goal and earning herself a spot in the best on ground for the game.
The encounter between Williamstown CYMS and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers unfolded as a classic tale of two halves. The Tigers took the lead in the initial stages, displaying skill and athleticism.
However, Williamstown turned the tide in the second half, showcasing their tactical prowess. They pulled away to secure a 22-point lead, proving their ability to adapt and dominate when it matters most. The final score of the match was 40-18.
Sofi Georgas was a star yet again for Williamstown, contributing 3 goals to their tally, while Loren Mills added 2 goals to the mix. St Bede’s captains Madeline Pearson and Maddi Wilson displayed their leadership and made notable contributions, kicking a goal each.
Beaumaris left a resounding statement in this week’s clash against Mazenod, with an impressive 72-point victory, bringing the final score to 78-6. Beaumaris set the tone early on, kicking 4 goals in the first quarter and finishing strong with 5 goals in the last quarter.
Beaumaris coach Darryl Behrendorff said, “it was a complete team effort for the 4 quarters…a credit to the entire team who improved in several areas, which enabled our team to execute our game plan better this week.”
Zoe Barbakos emerged as a star performer, demonstrating her goal-kicking dominance with an impressive 5 goals and earning recognition as the best player for Beaumaris. Mazenod managed to salvage a goal in the 3rd quarter, courtesy of Evangeline Clough Good, but it wasn’t enough to thwart Beaumaris’ dominance throughout the match.
Whilst Beaumaris are looking red hot this season, Behrendorff says that they still have several aspects of their game they need to improve, both individually and as a team. Though he is proud of how the team continues to support and challenge themselves and each other to improve.
Old Geelong delivered a standout performance against Fitzroy, which Old Geelong Coach Jack Crameri awarded to the relentless tackling pressure, pace, and commitment to second and third efforts that ultimately secured them the victory.
With a few key players out from injuries in Round 1, the pressure and speed from Captain Brooke McKay and debutante Mietta Passon highlighted the depth of the squad and why Old Geelong is a force to be reckoned with this season.
“Moving forward, we want to keep developing as a team and learning each other’s capabilities…and find out what our new players can do,” says Crameri.
Fitzroy did put up a solid fight in the second half, with players like Hilary Collett scoring two goals and keeping Old Geelong goalless. However, time was against them in the end, resulting in an uncomfortably close 27-22 score line.
With upsets happening so early in the season, the VAFA Prem B Women’s competition promises to be an exciting and unpredictable one, making the weekly footy tips a challenge for all involved, including myself.

Premier C is like a box of chocolates: you don’t know what you’ll get
Premier C Men’s continues to throw surprises at you left, right and centre. Whilst there weren’t as many blowouts this week, some surprise results and standout performances mean this section is well and truly alive.
AJAX continued their positive start to 2024 with a 74-point win over Old Carey. AJAX set the standard across the day, with a 48-point deficit at half-time proving too much for Old Carey to overcome as AJAX continued to build throughout the second half of the match. It was a good day to be a forward with Richie Simon and Toby Sheezel booting seven and five majors respectively. It wasn’t all negative for Old Carey as Mitchell Wooffindin, Riley Thompson and Luca Anderson had impressive games despite their defeat. The win sees AJAX sitting on top of the ladder with a comfortable percentage. No doubt oppositions will be nervous facing this club who are eager to prove themselves after dropping down from Premier B.
Marcellin had a good day out on their home turf, defeating the Monash Blues by 33 points. After a heavy defeat at the hands of AJAX last week, Marcellin managed to re-ignite themselves with good energy developed amongst the group in the pre-season, to claim their first win in 2024. Monash kicked two late goals to finish the game, however the damage had been done, with Marcellin’s Jack Pekin starring with six goals and vice-captain Matthew Capetola, amongst the best players for Marcellin. Nicholas Darling did his job up forward for Monash, yet Marcellin’s fast start proved to be too much to conquer.
After both suffering first-round defeats, PEGS and Glen Eira/Old McKinnon had a point to prove at the PEGS Playing Fields. Ultimately, it was the home side who banked the four points with PEGS walking away 28-point winners. Trailing by 16-points heading into the last quarter, Glen Eira had a shot at turning the scoreline around, however three early goals to PEGS put an end to those hopes. Jack Fenner had a brilliant day out for PEGS, kicking eight goals, with three of those coming in the last term as Fenner put his foot on the accelerator. Nicholas Mavropoulos and Lachlan Mirams provided some respite for Glen Eira, and whilst the Gryphons showed some fightback in the third quarter, they couldn’t match PEGS’ fast scoring.
After a dominant Round 1 display, Parkdale Vultures’ fortunes flipped as they went down to the Hampton Rovers by 28 points. The Rovers would’ve been within their rights to fear this contest given Parkdale’s obliteration of Glen Eira last week, but to Hampton’s credit, they held their own and improved as the game continued to take home the four points. After a trilogy of behinds, the Vultures kicked two goals later in the first quarter to take an 8-point lead to the quarter-time break. Hampton responded well, kicking five goals in the next two terms to Parkdale’s one, perhaps with a greater lead if not for some inaccurate kicking. Three late goals to Hampton saw them comfortably get over the line at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
Oakleigh’s number one ticket holder Steve Dimopoulos MP tossed the coin to begin this match, however the presence of their local member could not get Oakleigh over the line as they lost to Mazenod by 43 points. Whilst the first quarter was tight, Mazenod raced out of the blocks in the second quarter, kicking four consecutive goals at two different stages of this quarter, which set them up for a successful second half. Fletcher Ford and Shaun Lovell each kicked three goals for Mazenod, whilst Luke Ashen stood up for
Oakleigh, kicking four majors. Mazenod’s James Little’s senior debut was one for him remember to as his side got their second consecutive win to start their season on the right note.
Round 3 sees some interesting match-ups with teams looking to continue their early season dominance, or in the case of others, record a much needed first win of the season.
The Hampton Rovers hit the road for the first time this season, taking on the Monash Blues at Frearson Oval at the earlier start-time of 12.30pm. Monash will be looking to join the winner’s list whilst Hampton will be keen to continue their positive start in this competitive section.
Three games commence in unison at 2.00pm. Old Carey host Mazenod at Carey’s Sports Complex, whilst PEGS host Ajax at home, and the Parkdale Vultures will meet Oakleigh at Scammell Reserve, three big-match ups which wil have implications on the ladder.
The late game on Saturday sees Glen Eira/Old McKinnon host Marcellin at Packer Park, kicking off at 4.40pm. After their success in Division 1 last year, Glen Eira will be keen to show Marcellin that they belong in Premier C.

SKOB Pride Round
The SKOB/Saints community come together this weekend in their biggest day of the year to celebrate Pride Round with Kew and West Brunswick. The community were led last week by guest speaker Hayley Conway CEO of Pride Cup and were inspired by her commitment and message to equality for everyone and the impact sporting communities make through building inclusive communities. The Pride Round helps ensure anyone who is in LGBT+ community feel welcome, included, and safe in our football communities. The SKOB/Saints led by Steph Augustes and Grace Mills have been busy all week making cakes and biscuits for a massive bake sale and getting items for raffle prizes to help raise funds for the important work Minus 18 does in improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ young people. Everyone is most welcome to come down to T.H King Oval this Saturday and join in the celebrations of Pride Round and watch three great games of footy.

50,000 reasons to smile for West Brunswick
The West Brunswick Football Club has won $50,000 after being named Australia’s “Reserve Grade Heroes” by judges, including Matildas star Mary Fowler! The competition, supported by the Australian Sports Foundation, Hello Sports Podcast and Uber, saw clubs vie for funding with a series of quirky video entries. The Magpies caught the judges eyes as a volunteer-run club where the reserve grade teams are the driving force both on and off field.
West Brunswick women’s reserves coach Lydia Holt said the funding would help the club create facilities and initiatives for the entire community. “Winning Uber’s Reserve Grade Heroes competition has been such an honour for West Brunswick, to be able to say that Mary Fowler loves our ressies means so much to us.”

Tackle Your Feelings
Last week was Tackle Your Feelings Round, aimed at boosting mental health awareness among VAFA players, coaches, and clubs. Tackle Your Feelings, a complimentary mental health workshop designed to equip participants with the tools to understand, recognise and respond to mental health challenges within their communities.
To highlight the program during TYF Round, clubs presented “TYF Best on Ground medals” across 11 games to recognise the on-field performance of players during selected games. Additionally, St Mary’s Salesian showed their commitment to Mental Health education, by being involved in a workshop during the week and their U19 team wearing specially designed TYF jumpers.
Clubs interested in undertaking a FREE Tackle Your Feelings workshop are encouraged to contact Pranav Menon, Club Support Coordinator, at pranav@vafa.com.au.
VAFA Clubs recognises ANZAC Day
A host of VAFA Clubs are again recognising ANZAC Day in 2024 with Luncheons featuring special guests and on-ground ceremonies held last Saturday, with more to occur this weekend. Beaumaris had historian Rod Nicholson conduct a powerful presentation of photos and background of Beaumaris players who have served in the Armed Forces throughout history, while Hampton Rovers had a Legacy representative explain that it was their 100th anniversary and the valuable work they do in the community. Collegians v Old Scotch and Uni Blacks v Blues are just a couple of the matches where the ANZAC spirit will be on full display this coming weekend.
FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Shaedyn Aylen (Parkdale Vultures)
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates SHAEDYN AYLEN from Parkdale Vultures who has been nominated as the Round 2 Anytime Fitness Rising Star.
Shaedyn was nominated after kicking 3 goals in her first two games of senior footy, including a couple as she was named second-best afield in her team’s huge win over Old Camberwell in Round 2.
What the club said:
Shaedyn came to Parkdale after a decorated junior career at Mordi-Brae, winning a premiership player and multiple best and fairests. Playing down back and through the midfield, Shaedyn’s competitive drive and want to hunt the football has always stood out amongst her peers. She has consistently been her team’s best contested player. At her best she can break the game open, winning the hardball over and over to the benefit of her team. Shaedyn reads the play as well as anyone and has always set an example for others with the determined way she has approached her football.
From Head Coach Mark ALLEN: “Shaedyn has been an amazing addition to the Parkdale Vultures Women’s team this season, instantly winning the respect of her teammates. She has led from the front with her ability to win the ball all around the ground and is always looking for ways to bring her teammates into the game. The younger players like Shaedyn are the future of our club and it is fantastic to see her nominated for the Rising Star Award”.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Dane Harvey (Fitzroy)
The VAFA congratulates DANE HARVEY from Fitzroy, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 2. The 19-year-old has booted 4 goals in his first two Senior games for Fitzroy this season, providing a strong presence ahead of the ball for the Roys.
What the club said:
Dane played his first Senior Game for us as a 17-year-old in 2022. He endured a frustrating 2023 coming back from a knee injury but has completed a full preseason this year and we’re starting to see his enormous potential.
He’s a very athletic player who competes well in the air and is quite agile for his size. He has a great work ethic and is always wanting to improve.
From coach Travis RONALDSON: “Dane is an exciting young player with outstanding athleticism who has had a great start to the season. Playing as a tall forward, he works hard up and down the ground, competes well at ground level and is great to watch when running and jumping at the footy. We look forward to Dane continuing to develop in coming seasons.”

Teams make big statements in second round of Div 1
Round 2 in VAFA Division 1 had some contenders pull off some statement performances while we saved the best game till last as Parkside this time got over the line in a thriller.
Round one kicked off with UHS-VU having a comfortable 45-point win over Old Peninsula. The first quarter was a tight tussle with UHS-VU having a small lead of seven points in the break. But the pressure that UHS-VU brought to the table was too much for the Pirates as they kicked away in the second term.
The midfield really got on top with UHS-VU Skipper Harrison Kennedy leading the charge and forward Brandon Jackson continuing on his stellar start to the season with three goals. Wingman Henry Ley continued his impressive development with some great work rate across the ground. It was a disappointing loss for the Pirates but defenders Finn Bardolph and Killian Doyle stood up in adversity.
Prahran flexed their muscles against the Old Yarra Cobras in a 104-point victory at home. Prahran were on from the very start kicking six goals to one in the first term. The midfield of Prahran proved too strong for the cobras with great outputs from Skipper Rory Brodie and Mackenzie Mayne in the midfield.
The repeat entries and territory from Prahran made it tough for Cobra defenders kicking a whopping 20 goals for the day. Forwards Ethan Plaza and Shaun Chapman both kicked four goals each whilst the control at half-back from Luke Gorman was integral to the sides dominant win. Meanwhile, the Cobras will be looking to respond following a disappointing loss as they battle it out against UHS-VU in round three.
Kew continued their impressive start to the season with a 51-point win over a young Therry Penola. In the main break the match was evenly poised with the Lions only facing a 19 point deficit. The more match hardened Kew side lifted their intensity and effort, a trademark of Bryan Cole’s side and kicked nine goals to four in the second half.
The Waters’ brothers stepped up for Kew with Ned kicking four goals for the match and Max being integral to the side’s pressure around the ball. The Bears host the West Brunswick Magpies as they look to go undefeated.
Parkside got over the line in a nail biter against Ormond by two points. It was neck and neck for the whole game as the Devils led at quarter time by a goal. The Parkside side learnt some valuable lessons last week in their close loss to UHS-VU and proved it with a mature last quarter.
The Logozzo brothers had a great performance for Parkside including Luciano who provided some aggressive ball movement out of the back half and Steven providing plenty of class around the contest. The Devils showed some great composure with ball in hand in the dying moments and came away with the four points against a gallant Ormond side.
The Preston Bullants got their first win on the board against West Brunswick by 48 points. Bullants
Skipper Tom Hill played exceptional footy in the middle of the ground as the Magpies could only manage the five majors due to the lack of territory. Alex Johnston continued on his goalkicking form scoring three goals for the match.
Meanwhile, the Preston Bullants will be looking to continue their momentum as they look no further than to the Old Peninsula Pirates this week.
Looking ahead, Round 3 seems to be another cracker in Division 1. The game of the round is certainly Prahran taking on the up and coming Parkside Devils at DW Lucas Oval. The winner of this tight tussle will certainly make a huge statement to the rest of the competition.
Ormond will be looking to bring up there first win of the season in front of their home fans as they take on a young Therry Penola side looking to bounce back. UHS-VU are looking like contenders for the flag after going deep in finals last year and this week are looking to go undefeated against the Old Yarra Cobras.
West Brunswick have a tough task ahead of them as they try to get their first win on the board against Kew. The Magpies defence will have a challenge to stop the in-form William Llewelyn who has kicked seven goals in the first two rounds.
The Preston Bullants play at home against Old Peninsula as the Bullants look to make their way up to the top four. It’s really a must win game for both sides wrapping up an intriguing weekend of footy.

Reigning premiers remain undefeated whilst others fail to fire
It was a big Round 2 in Division 1 Women’s, with last year’s reigning premiers Marcellin remaining undefeated along with Old Brighton, after both teams had strong wins.
Old Brighton currently look like this year’s team to beat, backing up their 63-point Round One victory with a 103-point win over Brunswick this weekend.
At the other end of the ladder, Old Camberwell and Brunswick remain winless to kick off their campaign.
After a narrow eight-point win last weekend, Marcellin flexed their muscles on Saturday to remind everyone of why they are the premiers.
A 54-point victory over Old Melburnians was a wellrounded team performance. The tone was set early, Marcellin scoring 6.5 by half time compared to Old Melburnians 1.2.
A strong first half set up their win, with Jasmine Getson scoring three goals for Marcellin in the first quarter. Zoe Glascott also put on a stellar performance, kicking four goals in the second half to consolidate the lead. On the other side of the ledger, Ellen Williams was best on for Old Melburnians.
Next up, Marcellin will face Old Haileybury in an away game whilst Old Melburnians will host Old Xaverians. Over at Gillon Oval, Old Brighton held Brunswick scoreless for the entire game, with a final score of 0-103. This marks another impressive win after last week’s 63-point victory over Old Xavs.
Captain Caterina O’Brien led from the front, kicking three goals for the match, whilst Lily Tait was the best on ground with three goals of her own. Jasmine Tait joined in on the fun, whilst Mietta Nolan, Sienna Courtney and Georgia Howard all had two goals apiece.
Whilst Brunswick might remain winless, that could change next week as they take on the other winless team in Old Camberwell. Old Brighton will play the third placed Parkdale in what should be a thrilling encounter on Saturday afternoon.
Parkdale Vultures also showed that they are a strong threat this season. Despite a narrow loss last weekend, morale was not lost but rather they were spurred on to an impressive showing against Old Camberwell, defeating them 0-135.
Whilst it was a strong game in every quarter for Parkdale, their last quarter was undeniably their most impressive, with tired legs kicking 8.4 to round out an impressive performance.
Jasmine Reeve and Meaghan Medcraft kicked five goals each, with Lucy Burgess kicking another four to be the best on ground. Vice-captain Isabella Daddo was also impressive.
Despite not having a lot to celebrate on the weekend, Old Camberwell will be walking away with some positives with Bec Kertes, Romy Klooger and Isabella Burke all putting in strong performances despite the scoreline.
Next week, Camberwell will host Brunswick in what will be an interesting match to see who can break through for their first win of the season. On the other side of town, Parkdale hosts a tough opponent in Old Brighton- a lot rides on this game as it will show if Parkdale can emerge as a genuine contender for this year’s premiership cup.
Old Haileybury versus Old Xavs was the most enticing game of the round- two teams who recorded

very different results in round one- Old Xavs with a 63-point loss and Old Haileybury with a 58 point victory.
However, it was Old Xavs that came away with a onepoint victory after a thrilling encounter over at Fisher Oval. A low scoring game, particularly after the second half, with both teams level at 4.5 headed into the final change.
Only a combined three behinds were scored in the final term, but it was Xavs who came out victorious after kicking two behinds.
Claudia Lacey had a game-high two goals, whilst Olivia and Annabelle Gangi rounded out the goalscorers for Xavs. Best players for Xavs included Amy Benifer, Alessandra Libertone, and Josie Stevens whilst Eloise McCrae, Alizza Hetherington and Ella Gown were Haileybury’s best. Rachael Hobley, Serene Vudiniabola, Eloise McCrae and Ella Gown were all goal scorers for Haileybury.
Next week, Xavs will play Old Melburnians in what looms as a chance to jump up the ladder with 6th vs 7th at Elsternwick Park in the Saturday morning fixture. Haileybury will come up against a tough opponent in Marcellin, but will be confident heading into the game after their narrow defeat on the weekend.

Wattle Park come from behind to secure a second straight win
Some high scoring matches in the Division 2 Men’s competition over the weekend, as Brunswick continue their ascendency, while Aquinas make their mark in a big way defeating Whitefriars.
After defeating the 2023 Division 3 Premiers in Round 1, Brunswick came up against the other grand finalists in Hawthorn on the weekend. The Nobs have come into the season with all guns blazing and have very early on stamped their authority over the competition. They are a force to be reckon with and are not showing signs of slowing anytime soon.
With the likes of Hayden Parker and Jasper Paevere up forward who combined for 8 goals, the Nobs caused all sorts of problems for the Hawk’s defenders. Hawthorn’s golden boy in front of goals did what he does best booting 4 majors for his side in a tough match.
Despite being 10 points ahead at the quarter break, Hawthorn’s scoring slowed, and Brunswick came over the top to charge home with a 71-point victory.
Over at Melbourne High School, the South Melbourne Districts secured their second straight win, defeating MHSOB. Both teams had plenty of the ball and were able to hit the scoreboard, but ultimately it was the Bloods who took home the chocolates 108-88.
Jamie Booker starred once again for the Bloods with 6 goals, whilst Will Hellier registered 4 majors for the Unicorns. Brendan Cook was best afield yet again for his side, standing out as a true leader of MHSOB, whilst Akin Dinler had his best game and scored a goal for South Melbourne Districts.
St Mary’s Salesian hosted Elsternwick FC at Ferndale Park in Round 2, with both sides searching for their first win. Elsternwick were strong out of the
gates, keeping their opponents scoreless at the first break. St Mary’s fought their way back into the game with Hamish McMillan booting 3 of their goals.
Spencer Hankin was on fire down the other end snagging 5 big ones for the Wickers, earning himself a spot in the best alongside Dylan Jones. Elsternwick managed to hold off the Saints right until the final siren taking home the win by 29 points.
Aquinas and Whitefriars put on quite the show at Aquinas College. Whilst Aquinas were in front all day, things heated up in the fourth quarter when Whitefriars made a strong surge to get themselves within striking distance. They were able to close the final margin to just 11 points to help that all important percentage down the track. Nicholas Garratt stepped up in the last term, kicking the last two goals of the game for the Friars, whilst teammate Christian Feher finished the day with 3.
Harry Dwyer of Aquinas is making an early statement on the leading goal kicker tally with 9 to his name after just 2 rounds of football. He had 5 on the weekend, while Lachlan Robb was deemed best on ground.
Aquinas are already having a better season in 2024, defeating a tough opponent in Round 2. They are not to be underestimated as they hope to keep those wins coming and climb the ladder.
Wattle Park recorded their second win for the season defeating Bulleen Templestowe at home. With only 5 points in it after the premiership quarter, the final term made for some exciting footy. Despite the Bullants having their nose just in front, it was the Animals who dug deep to kick 4.4 racing home with a 14-point victory.
A notable performance was that of Trent Sanguinetti who played in the Reserves last week, but was called into the Senior side for Round 2 and booted 4 goals.
With Round 3 on the horizon, there are some exciting match ups looming. The head-to-head between Brunswick and Wattle Park is one to watch, as both sides are undefeated. Brunswick have home ground advantage at Gillon Oval, but Wattle Park are in good form and will want to carry their momentum.
Hawthorn will travel to play South Melbourne Districts, as Whitefriars host Elsternwick FC. The is an exciting showdown between two fiercely competitive sides with no recent playing history against one another.
Bulleen Templestowe will host St Mary’s Salesian where one side will record their first win of the 2024 season. The Bullants were within reach in Round 2 against Wattle Park and will be looking to play a consistent four quarters of football. Whereas St Mary’s are coming into the weekend off a loss to Elsternwick and are looking to sink their teeth into the competition.
Rounding out the weekend, Aquinas will come up against MHSOB in a match up that could go either way.

Bulls and Power House remain undefeated as Div 3 takes shape
Round 2 was filled with enthralling fixtures in Division 3, resulting in both close calls and dominant displays. The ladder is looking even across the board, with each club knowing that any win counts to gain an early high position.
Richmond Central bounced back in emphatic fashion against Box Hill North, slithering through the Demons’ defence to win 136-24. After suffering a tough loss to North Brunswick in Round 1, the Snakes rebounded in the best way possible, and now sit fifth on the ladder.
Nine goals between Henry Spurr (5), and James Rudolph (4) lifted the Snakes to an enormous victory, among Billy Browning-Briese and Charles Spring who were once again in the best.
Box Hill North’s captain Johnathon Tommasoni kicked two, landing him in the best amongst Aaron D’Amato and Tim Stanghi. The Demons are now 0-2 and will need to beat Swinburne if they are to get on the winner’s list in Round 3.
In a doggedly fought match, Power House brought home the four points against Swinburne University An 18-point win, Power House maintained a solid barrier throughout the game, as a spirited last quarter from the Razorbacks fell short.
The Razorbacks fought tirelessly and came within just nine points at halftime as Justin Birch, Declan Watts and Jason Hawker were best on ground.
To continue their winning form, Power House’s forward line set the tone, with multiple goals from Luke Stubbs (5) and Kieran Wotherspoon (3). Travis Scotland and Joseph Halloran were best on. Power House take on Chadstone next week as a mouthwatering 3-0 start to the year emerges.
North Brunswick survived a late scare to remain undefeated, outlasting the fast-finishing St John’s by 11 points. A 34-point three-quarter-time lead proposed a cruisy finish for the Bulls, however 4.3 to four behinds changed the tune of the game. Yet, the Bulls unbeaten streak remains intact, and currently sit atop of the Division 3 ladder.
Daniel Abou-Karroum was brilliant for St John’s, as well as last year’s Division 4 best and fairest winner Corey Ely.
Mitch Hicks and Zac Dicianni were again in the Bulls’ best players, as well as Fletcher Banfield and Tom Shembrey. North Brunswick will play their toughest competition yet in Round 3, facing 2023 finalist Canterbury, whilst the JOCs take on familiar rival Albert Park.
Eley Park have stunned Albert Park in a determined 27-point win to start their 2024 campaign. After having the bye in Round 1, the Sharks unleashed their energy from the preseason in inspiring fashion. Both the Sharks and Falcons defended tremendously in the first half, with a 17-10 halftime scoreline. Eley Park had pulled away by the final siren, keeping Albert Park to just four goals.
Winning their first game since Round 15 2023, Aaron Williams and Zac Hayes were undisputed in defence, as Jesiah Mcgarvie played impressively up forward.
Eley Park coach Matt Embling said, “the work rate was excellent from siren-to-siren” and was pleased with the performance of new recruits.
Albert Park’s inaccuracy in front of goal was costly, kicking 12 behinds. They’ll look to return to their Round 1 form against St John’s in what will be a tight Division 4 finals rematch.
Canterbury returned to their best against Chadstone, winning comfortably by 75 points. Chadstone played a gritty first half, only trailing by seven at one stage of the second quarter. A second half flurry 10-2 goals saw the Cobras find their groove though, as Tom Lowden and Nic McMahon kicked four each.
Reith Fraser and Michael Topp joined skipper James Boarotto in Canterbury’s best, as they move up to seventh on the ladder.
The Synners’ captain Anthony Brown kicked three majors, as Angus Letzing and Hristos Millaras made the best.
Chadstone will take on Power House in Round 3, as they aim to improve on their season’s start.
Next week’s fixture provides plenty of exciting matchups. It starts at Canterbury’s home deck, as they clash with North Brunswick. The Cobras are a formidable side with confidence from their Round 2 win, but the Bulls are on an unstoppable winning streak. Will it come to an end this weekend?
Power House will also hope to remain unbeaten, playing Chadstone at home. Power House may walk in as favourites, however after two physical contests, it may give the Synners a chance to overrun a fatigued side. Their first half against Canterbury proves they can compete with the best.
La Trobe University return from the bye and will host an Eley Park side full of belief. The Sharks will be targeting a second-consecutive win, but La Trobe will be rested and ready to rebound from their Round 1 loss. This game could go either way.
Box Hill North play Swinburne University in a must-win clash. Despite a second-place finish in 2023, the Demons are 0-2 and need to win against Swinburne to get their season back on track. A win for the Razorbacks will place them comfortably inside the top half of the ladder.
St John’s and Albert Park close out the round in a highstakes game. Both sides are 1-1, yet have been competitive in their losses. With both teams chasing premiership glory, this game will be a physical contest to avoid a losing record. A blockbuster match.
Richmond Central have the bye in Round 3.

Old Brighton remains unbeaten, whilst Old Scotch run rampant
With the Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition heating up, Round 3 delivered a handful of powerful performances and intriguing matchups.
Old Brighton continued its unbeaten run to the season, trumping Beaumaris in a dominant performance. Running out on home soil, the Brighton boys stood tall from the opening bounce, running away as 73-point winners.
It was captain Jonah Campigli who led the way for Brighton, slotting four majors. He wasn’t alone in the goal-fest, with Kai Vivian also kicking 4 and Cooper Dowe with 3. Luke Travers and Oliver Goodger were also named in the best for the home side.
Beaumaris provided some moments of excellence despite their convincing loss. Mitchell Davidson continued his splendid form, whilst Angus Bowd and Ned Bodi impressed for the visitors.
Over at Camberwell Sports Ground, Old Scotch concluded their contest as 95-point winners over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. Enduring a narrow 7-point loss in round one, the Old Scotch U19 outfit have bounced back in recent times, triumphing by 90+ points for a second week in a row.
Old Scotch’s dominance would be proved with goals coming from 10 various players. James Davies, Connor Ferguson and Henry Long all kicked 3, whilst Jake Phillips, Ben Thomson, Preston Johnson, Finn Nankervis and Will Hucker were named in the best players.
Another dominant performance came in the Caulfield Grammarians and St Kevins contest. St Kevin’s would put the Grammarians to the sword, running away 83-point winners.
Young prospect Zane Greenham flexed his muscle, kicking six majors in a best-afield outing. Samuel Jones and Jackson O’Malley were also prominent in the win, whilst Kayne Watt and James Hill stood tall for the Grammarians.
Continuing the trend of the round, Uni Blues also ran away with a lopsided victory against De La Salle. Managing just four majors, De La Salle were overpowered by a determined Blues outfit, losing by 71 points.
For the Victors, it was Archie Bain who led the way, kicking four goals. Henry Wicks, Oliver Grodski and Jack Ball also contributed heavily to the win, whilst for the opposition, Conor O’Meara, Xavier Burns and Hugo Sheedy acted as a shining light.
On Saturday, the closest contest of Round 3 came in the form of Old Xaverians v Williamstown CYMS. A matchup stacked with talent, the crowd was treated to a scintillating contest at Toorak park. After an intense battle, the two sides entered the last quarter neck and neck. It was Old Xaverians who showed their class in the final quarter, kicking six goals to one and running away 33-point victors.
Ed Dalton, Harry Bird and Alby Hewitt were amongst the best for the winners, whilst Isaac Gawne, Mitchell Alexander and Robbie Cockerell played well for Williamstown.

Lisa Maire McCombs (Power House)

100
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Lisa Maire McCombs, our reigning best and fairest and former captain serves as an inspiration with her commitment and outstanding performance, setting a high standard for the rest of the team. This year, Lisa chose to step down as captain but continues to play a vital role in our leadership group. We congratulate Lisa on reaching 50 games, becoming only the third Power House woman to achieve this milestone.
Alex Strempel (Marcellin OC)
Congratulations to Alex Strempel who will play his 50th game this weekend! Stremp joined the club in 2017, and was fantastic in back-to-back under 19 seasons where he helped the team reach the finals in both years. After a few years away, Stremp returned to the club in 2023 where he had a great season playing as both a forward and defender. He was rewarded for his efforts early in the year with a senior debut, where he continued to play throughout the season. We can’t wait to see the next 50 from him!
Jack Carey (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon Gryphons)
Congratulations to Jack Carey on playing 50 games. A quintessential member of the 2023 Division 1 Premiership team holding down centre half back, Jack is a strong mark, possesses terrific closing speed and is highly skilled on either foot. We look forward to many more high-class games from the youngest of the three Carey brothers for the next decade.
Matthew Dickens (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon Gryphons)
Congratulations Matt on reaching 50 games. A 2020 McKinnon Secondary College graduate and former member of the U19s leadership group, Dicko has progressed well at open age level. A hard-working backman, Dicko made his Senior debut in 2023. He continues to work hard to achieve more Senior games whilst learning his craft as a dependable member of our Reserves back six. We look forward to many more quality games from Dicko in the years to come at Packer Park.
Jamie Brooker (South Melbourne Districts)
The reigning Swans senior best and fairest winner started his football journey at South Melbourne Juniors, and will run out in the red and white for the 210th time this weekend. Joining the senior club as an U19s player, he quickly earned the nickname Bambi as he stumbled around in the ruck. That didn’t last long however, quickly transforming into the best forward at the club. During our 2022 premiership run, Jamie earned himself a fierce reputation up forward as he honed his craft learning from the Dufficy brothers. In 2024, Jamie is a key part of the senior leadership group and continues his goal kicking ways, fresh off a 6 goal haul against Melbourne High on the weekend. With 99 games and 129 goals under his belt, and the majority of those goals coming in the last 2 seasons, Jamie looks set to continue haunting opposition defences for years to come.
Kristian Dompietro (Ormond AFC)
100
“Wombat” joined the Ormond senior teams in 2016. He was part of the resurgent Thirds in 2021 which made the finals and played in the Thirds grand final in 2023. In the Thirds B&F, he came 3rd in 2017, and 2nd in 2018 and 2019. In the Reserves B&F, he came 3rd in 2022. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond for reaching this milestone.
Nick Jewell (Hampton Rovers)
200
The Hampton Rovers Football Club congratulates Reserves captain Nick Jewell on reaching 200 games last weekend. Nick joined the Rovers in the U19s, part of the 2009 Premiership team, he’s now the fearless leader in the Reserves and always gives it his all. Jewelly’s a great person to have around the club, previously taking charge of MC duties on a Thursday night and now on the committee helping with social functions. Congrats on 200 Games!
