SEASON 2022 - APRIL 30
EDITORIAL Peter Grant – Interim VAFA CEO
largest women’s community football competition, with 77 teams across six sections. It’s great to see many foundation players reaching their 50 game milestones this season.
The VAFA season is now in full swing, and it was great to see the footy return over the long weekend, with matches played in some glorious Melbourne weather. As always, many clubs conducted ANZAC ceremonies to allow the VAFA community to honour those who passed away in conflict while serving Australia. This was highlighted by the Fitzroy vs Williamstown CYMS Premier B game at Brunswick Street Oval on Monday.
The Football Operations department this year has introduced the Player Permit Application Process in order to provide greater thoroughness and transparency towards Category 5 and Category 6 point players transferring into the VAFA. To that end, 11 players have been through this extensive process to-date, formally meeting face-to-face with the VAFA Permit Committee for an interview and the final results of each Player Permit application has been made available on the VAFA website.
Next weekend we celebrate our partnership with Breast Cancer Network Australia with our annual PLAY4BCNA round – more details about this round will be published across all VAFA channels next week. Following this will be Umpires round, then later in the season, we recognise our partnerships with both Tackle Your Feelings and TAC Towards Zero.
The VAFA is prioritising the recruitment of new umpires to service the competition.
The VAFA is prioritising the recruitment of new umpires to service the competition. A number of umpire recruitment and retention initiatives have been undertaken by the umpire department with the aim of boosting boundary, field and goal umpire coverage. Recruiting more women into umpiring is one area of priority with our BJS Women’s Umpiring program underway. We thank clubs for their ongoing support in sourcing club umpires to officiate matches. The AFL has identified respect for umpires as a concern and the VAFA fully supports any initiative in this domain. We all recognise the essential part of our game that umpires play.
Last week, we farewelled Sam Confait from the VAFA Administration team after eight years of service. In his time at the VAFA, Sam was instrumental in implementing many excellent initiatives and we wish Sam all the best in his new role at the AFL as the South-East Region General Manager.
We congratulate Matt Collister on his promotion to the role of General Manager, Football & Umpiring, and we’re currently advertising for a new Football Operations Manager, with applications closing on Friday, 6 May. Through 2022, the VAFA media team has expanded its coverage of the game. RSN Carnival continues to host the Premier section match of the day with a 1 hour live pre-game show from 1pm on a Saturday before the first bounce at 2pm.
On the topic of umpiring, a BIG congratulations goes to Kevin ‘Chillie’ Segota on notching up his 900th VAFA match during Saturday’s William Buck Premier match between Collegians and Old Scotch at Harry Trott Oval. We heard from Chillie on last week’s For The Love of the Game Podcast and it’s a sensational milestone which he should be extremely proud of.
In partnership with My Sport Live, we have enhanced our live coverage, increasing our live-streams from one to three games per round. Clubs across the competition are encouraged to reach out to the media department if they have a game they would like extended coverage for.
There are now in excess of 10,000 players registered across VAFA’s 70 clubs, of which 25% are playing in our women’s divisions, meaning the VAFA remains Australia’s
Best wishes to all clubs in the upcoming round.

William Buck Premier: Death, taxes and… It’s the most commonly used phrase when describing absolute certainties, and maybe, just maybe, it’s the third word in the idiom that is as clear as mud when talking about those certainties.
They have a knack of winning matches where they’re seemingly given very little chance, and on the oddoccasion drop the games they are favourites heading into. Coach of OM’s, Paul Satterly rightly quashed those questions on this week’s FTLOTG podcast with this being a different style of Melburnians team, an even-spread of contributors, a non-reliance on too few.
It’s always changing and everyone has a different take on death, taxes and… Ahead of Round 4, we’ll try to assist your eyes when viewing these games as certainties to happen this Saturday afternoon!
The inclusion of Sam Dunnell to the forward line added plenty of zip, zest and vibrancy. Al Armstrong is back to his best kicking 3 goals in consecutive weeks.
Death, taxes and… Someone (most likely me) bringing up the 2017/2018 Grand Finals of St Kevin’s and Collegians more than once in the pre-game at T H King Oval.
Despite the confidence St Bernard’s take out of their first win of the season last weekend, Elsternwick Park is where the finals will be played and you can lock it away that Old Melburnians will want to perform if they’re to be there at the pointy end of the season.
It’s the RSN Carnival Match of the Day and at the early part of this season, the numbers suggest these sides could be back to the rivalry in the pre-covid era. While the ledger is lopsided St Kevin’s way (10-4 in head to head), the Purple Army are not going to be a pushover on Saturday afternoon.
Death, taxes and… Harry Thompson going down into the Old Trinity defence to be a brick wall against University Blues this weekend. He’s got Stuey Lowe bucket hands with the T’s ruckman clunking everything that came his way in round 3.
Both sides became the first to kick 100 points for the year in Round 3, and while kicking big scores will more often than not win you games, it’s been the defence of St Kevin’s that has shone the brightest. After being ranked #1 in defence in 2021 (Average 56.2 points conceded per game), they’ve tightened the screws even further to start 2022 (Average 45 points conceded per game).
While he’ll have his hands full in the ruck contest against Ayce Cordy, he, like his T’s counterparts won’t stop trying all afternoon against their more highly fancied opponents. Speaking of the Blues, Death, taxes and… Alex Fasolo to kick multiple goals in that match, since joining at the start of 2021 ‘Fas’ has played 11 games, kicked 33 goals, and been held goalless just once. He has rotated between three goals, and four goals in almost every game he has played.
Can Collegians, the #1 scoring team of the first 3 rounds breakthrough the measly SKOB defence? It will be fascinating to see if Sam Critchley stands Dave Mirra for the afternoon, while the even-spreading of St Kevin’s goalkickers is enough to keep the Collegians coaching staff up all night this week.
It’s far too early to be writing off a side with the artillery the Blues have, but Guy Martyn would not want to see his side cough up another lead this weekend as they aim to steady their ship at 2-2 after the first month.
And, if it’s anything like those two Grand Finals, set the radio dial to RSN Carnival because you won’t want to miss a moment!
Death, taxes and… Dobosz going bang! Returning this week, Caulfield Grammarians are in the same spot as they were 12 months ago after a 0-3 start. All it took was a spark in 2021 to send them on a seven game winning streak, is this weekend that same spark is lit when they face Old Xaverians?
Death, taxes and… Questions coming for Old Melburnians in a game they should win against St Bernard’s after the terrific come-from-behind win against Old Xaverians on Saturday. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Xav’s themselves are two kicks away from being 3-0 but after back to back losses find themselves 1-2 heading into Saturday. While it’s certainly not panic stations coming from the Xav’s mafia they won’t be comfortable dropping a third straight game. It’s a ring of fire to start 2022 for the Fields who’ve faced St Kevin’s (first), Collegians (second), OM’s (fourth), with Xav’s, Old Brighton (third) and Uni Blues to come. By the end of round 6 they’ll have learnt plenty about themselves and where they’re at in 2022. Death, taxes and… An old-fashioned grudge match coming to Camberwell Sports Park with the young brash Old Scotch coming up against the young brash Old Brighton. In the head-to-head battle of recent years Old Brighton have won four, Old Scotch have won four, they’ve drawn once. Old Brighton hang their hats on the 2017 Premier B Grand Final victory over their rivals. This weekend, the head-to-head battle counts for little, what we’ve seen from Old Scotch under Mark Gnatt is a hunger and attitude to attack every contest with great verve, intensity and ferocity. Much the same as Saturday’s opponents Old Brighton. Old Scotch have trailed at 3 quarter time in each game so far in 2022 yet have still been in the game before falling away in the last 2 weeks. Old Brighton on the other hand have had barnstorming finishes in their previous fortnight. Expect it to be another grandstand finish if it’s close come the last stanza. Death, taxes and… All of these predictions coming to fruition which will make this look like a Nostradamus type performance early on in the season!

The ANZAC spirit inspires big wins in round 3 The ANZAC spirit encompasses endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour, and mateship – all of which could be seen on the footy field this week as round 3 paid respect to fallen Australian and New Zealand soldiers alongside returning servicemen and women.
The Uni Blacks remain in good form, taking home the 4 points against St Bedes Mentone at University Oval. A close game heading into the final term saw the Tigers trail by 5. With the game on the line, the Blackers, turned their gears up a notch, kicking away with another 8 goals resulting in a 42-point win over the tigers. Commendable efforts from Zac Calvez and Thomas Tyquin as well as late goals from Simon Richards, unfortunately, were not enough to get St Bedes Mentone across the line. Josh Steadman continued to bring the pressure in the middle for the Uni Blacks with Campbell Moorfield also heating up. St Bedes will head back home for the battle of the cats while the Uni Blacks won’t give up their second spot easily to Beaumaris.
Beaumaris earnt themselves another 4 points in their hit out against De La Salle as did the Uni Blacks in their victory over St Bedes Mentone. Old Haileybury took home a monster 101-point landslide over Old Carey and Fitzroy clutch their first win of the season against Williamstown. Lead by their new coach Nick Hyland, De La Salle are still yet to snag their first victory of 2022 as they came off second best against Beaumaris at Banksia Reserve. With some early injuries for De La, the valiant efforts from Nick Curwood and Brodie Mclaughlin were no match for The Shark’s fortress down back. For his relentless efforts in the middle, leader Joel Di Natale was awarded The ANZAC medal while Joel Cusack was also among Beauy’s best, ending the day with 4 outstanding goals. De La will be eager to change their luck as they face AJAX for the Bernie Sheehy Cup meanwhile Beaumaris battle The Uni Blacks for second position.
In a contest between first and ninth on the ladder, Old Haileybury wounded the home team in their massive win over Old Carey. The Bloods shared the love around with 11 different goal kickers. Among them, Durras Seccull and Andreas Stefanakis booting 5 and 3 respectively. Exceptional determination from the Panther’s Lachlan Summers alongside debutant Connor Ogolive who secured a goal in his first senior match. Both sides will hit the road in round 4 with Old Haileybury headed down to Williamstown to face the CY’s and Old Carey are off to Mentone as the Panthers meet the Tigers. To wrap up the round, Fitzroy and Williamstown went head-to-head at Brunswick Street Oval on Monday afternoon. This game saw the momentum shift at each stoppage, both teams hungry to wrestle the game onto their terms. In the end, Williamstown’s inaccuracy in front of goal coupled with Fitzory’s ability to take grass saw the scoreline fall in favour of The Roys. Persistent second

Rovers and Monash record huge wins in round 3 High scores were the order of the day on a pleasant afternoon for football. Whilst some sides set down their markers and showed that they will be serious players in 2022, however, one side upset the applecart with a surprise first victory.
Old Mentonians survived a fourth-quarter surge from Ormond and a bout of the yips in front of goal to score an unexpected but meritorious win over their highly-fancied visitors at Keysborough. They led at quarter time by the odd goal in five, and increased their advantage at each of the next two breaks as a disciplined Panthers outfit never allowed the Ormond machine to operate at optimum level. The sides went to three-quarter time with Old Mentonians holding a four-goal advantage and whilst Ormond came hard in the final term, the Panthers were not to be headed, scoring a deserved 13-point win. Robert Tunbridge kicked four goals and Tom Morecroft three for the winners with Darcy Brown a popular choice as beston-ground. Blake Picone led Ormond’s scoring list with four goals, with Zach Benson their best.
Hampton Rovers have started the 2022 season in fine fettle, and they continued their sterling early season form with a 137-point thrashing of UHS-VU at Boss James Reserve. The Rovers raced out of the blocks, kicking eight goals unanswered in the first stanza, before the Uni boys got one back late in the term. When the Rovers posted five goals without reply in the second term, the game was over as a contest by half time. The second half was all Rovers as they kicked eight in the third quarter and seven in the last, and UHS-VU had no answers. Hampton Rovers’ main goalkickers were their best players on the day; Jacob Gray with six and Danny Corp five. Fraser Campbell and Pat Brookes kicked two each for the Uni, while Fraser Allen also tried hard for the vanquished.
Mazenod travelled to Marcellin and franked their round two form with a convincing win over their hosts. The Nodders kicked the only three goals of the first term and went on to win every quarter before posting a 46-point win. Marcellin were at their most competitive in the second quarter, where both sides kicked three goals for Mazenod to go to the main break with an 18-point lead. The advantage was extended to 27 by the final change before Mazenod kicked four goals to one in the last quarter to seal the four points. Jack Caspersz continued his good early season form with four for Mazenod with Brad Kovac kicking two, and Sean Welsford playing well. Andrew Kaye and Pat Howe kicked two each for Marcellin, for whom Lachlan Rush was their best.
Old Ivanhoe travelled to Gerry Green Reserve and boarded the bus home with four points in the bank, but the Parkdale Vultures may feel that they kicked their way out of the win here. They matched their visitors in most aspects of the match, but a score of one goal 10 behinds at half time did not do justice to their handiwork. The Ivanhoe boys bounced back well from a goalless first quarter to lead by 13 points at the main break, a lead that they extended to 18 turning for home as Parkdale’s woes in front of goal continued. The Vultures had their radars in working order for the last quarter, kicking five goals for the term, but Old Ivanhoe were able to impact the scoreboard enough to take the win by ten points. Kai Colella was the only multiple goalkicker for Parkdale with two while Matt Emmanouil was also strong. Michael Mitris and Luke Scuderi both registered four majors for Old Ivanhoe, with Sam Keogh also excellent on the day.

Premiership favourites Monash Blues walloped the Preston Bullants to the tune of 151 points at Ruthven Reserve. The Bullants kicked two of their three goals in the first quarter, and were goalless after half time as the Blues ran riot all over the ground. They had twelve goals to half-time in leading by 57, but kicked 15 goals without reply in the second half as Preston had no answer to the speed of their ball movement and their efficiency forward of the centre. Hard though Preston tried, they ran out of legs as the match progressed as the well-organised Blues showed again that they will be hard to toss in 2022. Ethan Lowe with two was Preston’s only multiple goal-kicker with two, while the two Howards, Rory and Conor, were their best. Nick Woodland and Mitch King kicked five each for Monash, with Jake Meade and MacGregor Cameron leading the way for them.

VAFA clubs recognise ANZAC Day It was great to see many pre-game ANZAC Day ceremonies at VAFA matches across the long weekend. While most games were in the traditional Saturday timeslot, Fitzroy hosted Williamstown CYMS at Brunswick Street Oval on ANZAC Day.

900 games for Kevin ‘Chillie’ Segota Kevin Segota celebrated his 900th game of officiating in the VAFA in Round 3 at Harry Trott Oval between Collegians and Old Scotch. Starting out as a boundary umpire in 1978, he went on to officiate as a field umpire between 1979 1992. From 1993 onwards he has stood in the goals waving the white flags. Segota’s fondest memory is being the field umpire in the 1987 A-Section Grand Final that saw Ormond beat the powerhouse Old Xaverians. The VAFA community congratulates Chilli on an amazing achievement.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Serene Vudiniabola (Old Haileybury) The VAFA congratulates Serene Vudiniabola from Old Haileybury who is the round 3 Anytime Fitness Rising Star nominee. Serene is scoring on average more than a goal a game in the early part of her senior career. What the club said: The Haileybury Hearts are thrilled with the news that Serene Vudiniabola has been nominated as this week’s Rising Star nominee. Serene is a past student at Haileybury College where she first played football in the same year that she completed year 12 in 2019. After being invited to train with the Dandenong Stingrays in the Covid interrupted season of 2020, she joined the Haileybury Hearts last year. Serene continues to develop her game through hard work and dedication to the sport.
Serene was a clear best on ground as she took some strong marks and also kicked 2 goals. It’s nice to see her efforts being recognised by the VAFA and we have no doubt that as she gets more football experience that Serene’s game can progress to even greater heights.
She played her best game of her short career on the weekend where she rotated between the ruck and centre half forward.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Heath Ramshaw (Fitzroy FC) The VAFA congratulates the third Men’s Rising Star nominee of 2022 – Heath Ramshaw from Fitzroy FC. Heath starred as the Roys overcame Williamstown CYMS on Anzac day Monday. What the club said: At the tender age of 19, Heath has made an impact in the senior squad and established his position in senior Coach Luke Mahoney’s side. With the ability to drive play through dynamic, speedy and accurate ball movement, Heath is a player to keep an eye on, both for excited Fitzroy fans – who particularly enjoyed watching him dominate in the midfield during the Roys’ Anzac Day victory over Williamstown CYMS – and opposition sides who’ll be trying to match up on him on game day.
With his sights set on being drafted into the AFL, this talented youngster is putting in the work on the training track and game days to continue his development and, ultimately, reach his goals.
Heath is also on Carlton’s VFL sub list through the Carlton College of Sport Football Development Program and is on the path to proving himself as a strong and competitive footballer at the highest levels.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
In the meantime we’ll continue to watch Heath’s exciting brand of football, at home at the historical Brunswick Street Oval and away.

Two weeks is a long time in footy… If you’ve continued sitting down from the news of the draw, then this bombshell will also come a little easier to hear, with the might of the Kew FC falling at the hands of a dangerous and in-form PEGS, being the victim of a 31 point demolition by the boys from Essendon. Out at the notoriously windy PEGS sports grounds, this outfit and their clearly elite backline kept the Kew ensemble goalless through three quarters… goalless! It’s incredible to think given that Kew is such a high scoring offensive team, however they managed to mitigate their major players and goal scorers to run out 31 points the winner. Even more crazy was that PEGS only had 4 goal scorers, three of them in multiples and two of them with 3 bag hauls… is this now or are they emerging to be the cream of the crop? Maybe.
After a week off from VAFA footy, Division 1 Men’s was ready to get back into the swing of things and a swing is just the way to describe it, with the tables being turned in just about every which way… let me explain. I hope you’re sitting down because this one may knock you off your feet, with Old Camberwell, the coupe de gras of this division being the first team to share a draw with the clearly charging Prahran Assumption. This game came as a huge surprise, and given assumption didn’t get off a major in the first term, it is incredibly impressive that behind the boot of 5 majors from Matt Clifford were able to climb back and grab 2 points off the highly impressive outfit of Camberwell. I certainly didn’t see this one coming, even though PEGS were 2-0 into this game, I thought the might of Camberwell may be too much, but a classic at Gordon Barnard prevailed!
Now this result is interesting but it didn’t shock me as much as the two others mentioned, but what the result of Oakleigh FC and Glen Eira shows is that Oakleigh now 3 rounds into the season has redeveloped its backline, coming out 20 point winners against the former division 2 powerhouse. Each of these teams now has only suffered 1 loss for the season and probably shows that they are pretty comparable in where they may be positioned in the later stages of the year. Glen Eira is a high midfield usage team and Oakleigh knows how to roost goals on the boot of Cloke who was the leading goal scorer last year - it’s pretty exciting to see this Oakleigh team develop and blossom… even though I didn’t tip them.
The next game on the docket couldn’t have gone more opposite to the previous, but it did manage to get Old Peninsula on the board with a 103 point thumping of Therry Penola AFC. Having watched Peninsula take on Glen Eira two weeks ago it was clear their defensive structure was where they lacked, but clearly this was worked on over the two week break, allowing the outfit to have 7 multiple goal scorers, including 5 between the Payze father son duo. For Therry Penola it seems each week I may be writing it’s going to be a long year, really unable to affect the scoreboard to keep games close, or minimise the damage going the other way.

The final game of the round was one that desperately needed to happen for our Whitefriars outfit, having been 0-2 through the opening rounds, running St Mary’s Salesian into the ground with a 51 point win at home. Admittedly this game was close to the half, however in the magic of the third term Whitefriars, and in particular the work rate of Daniel Woods showed the class we’ve been wanting to see all year and put the foot on the accelerator to come out winners. I know 51 points sounds bad and sounds like a huge loss, but there’s a lot of positives from the first half and the fight in the final quarter to take away for St Mary’s.

Big bags the order of the day in Division 2 Men’s There was plenty to like about the weather on Saturday if you were a forward in division 2 on Saturday.
Rhyen Woods was named best for Brunswick who’ve started the season in a blaze of glory averaging 132 points per game, while conceding 40.25 points against.
The beautiful sunshine, fast-moving footy and a day to dominate would’ve been on the mind of many as Round 3 came around after the Easter break.
A big deal was made about Bulleen Templestowe ending their losing streak in 2021, in the early part of this season, it’s becoming part of the norm. An 18 point win over Manningham is justification they’re doing plenty right, supported up forward by Anthony Nicholas Lucisano who kicked 5 goals in the win after coming from Kew in 2021.
Aquinas picked up where they left off with a thumping 97 point win over Power House. The home side were in total control from the opening bounce setting up the win with 12 goals to 2 in the opening half. Harry Dwyer found his way to 7 goals in a best on ground display while Michael Di Donato helped himself to 4 majors.
The Cobras have had a tough 3 weeks to start the year but will see themselves as a big chance against Yarra Old Grammarians when they meet at Koonung Park this Saturday.
After finishing in 7th spot last year with 4 wins, they have the chance to equal that this weekend when they travel to face MHSOB, setting up a tantalising contest!
In another edition of Saturday night footy, Ivanhoe AFC avenged their round 2 loss to MHSOB accounting for West Brunswick by 41 points. In a battle of the black and white, Scott Selwood helped himself to 2 goals in his debut with the club. Billy Drake has had a great start to the year for the Hoers with 2 majors himself, while the captain-coach Ash Close keeps his name equal top of the goalkicking in 2022, also kicking 2.
The Unicorns were the pre-season prediction for Division 2, coming into the season after winning 10 in a row last year and the first 2 games of this season. The streak came to an end at the hands of Old Parade. In a topsy turvy contest Old Parade led at quarter time by 23 points, half time by 6 points, trailing by 19 at the final change before storming home by 18 points. Luke Brock backed up his 4 goals last week with a bag of 5 as part of the 37 point turnaround in the final term.
Last year’s J Fullerton Medal winner Wayne Schulz couldn’t be stopped as he ran rampant for the victors. On the Magpies side of things, Luke Buckler kicked 2 goals while Josh Elston and Will Dillon were named in the best.
MHSOB may well use this as a ‘reset’ and sting in the tail they need going into next week. They’ll no doubt be very impressed with the follow up effort of Julian Eimutis who kicked 4 for the Unicorns and was named their best player again.
Ivanhoe AFC will look to keep pressure on the top 2 as they head to Power House this weekend while West Brunswick host Bulleen Templestowe.
Brunswick struggled throughout 2021, coming down to Division 2 has played into the hands of the purple, green and white. A 37 point win over Yarra Old Grammarians was set up with 10 goals in 3 in the first half. Despite 3 goals to Matt Stone for Yarra Old, he was overshadowed in front of the sticks by Tom Wilson who took his season tally to 15 to sit equal top after 3 rounds.

Victory again for milestone man, defeat again for last year’s minor premiers Division 3 Men’s footy returned from the Easter break with a vengeance as most club socials tried to avoid posting photos with the caption ‘Don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it’. But it absolutely was a day for footy, as Melbourne provided the perfect sun-and-blue-skies backdrop for a couple of upsets, and some fierce wins.
A Simon Mackie-less Parkside went down to North Brunswick by 16 points at Allard Park, despite taking a small lead into the first break. The Bulls kept their noses in front for the last three quarters of the game, with the Red Devils unable to gain the lead back. Tim Liston (3) returned to his goalkicking ways for the home side, subsequently earning best-on honours in the process, while Matthew David, Andrew Ramzy, Samuel Willatt, and Joseph Flynn all kicked two each. In the absence of their fellow forward, Matthew Holden (3), William O’Neil-Shaw (2), and Benedict Douglas (2) all picked up the slack, with the latter Parkside’s best.
2021 minor premiers Hawthorn are still winless three rounds into the season and Parkside suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of a gutsy North Brunswick outfit, while Elsternwick have narrowly held onto their clean record. Emmaus St Leo’s capped off their run of home games to begin the season with a hard-fought win over Richmond Central at Bennettswood Reserve. It was a close contest despite the scoreboard, with the game ebbing and flowing before the Animals kicked away in the final term to win by 23 points. Matt Hill (4) had his kicking boots on for the home side, with Sam Barrah and Jonathan Greensides both kicking two each to ride shotgun in the forward line, but it was Lawrence Virgo’s efforts down back that earned him best-on honours. Richmond Central had nine individual goalkickers but Justin Perillo (3) and Jack Bilson (2) were the only multiple-goal scorers, with Damien Holland their best.
There might be alarm bells ringing for last year’s minor premiers as Canterbury travelled to Rathmines Road Reserve and dismantled Hawthorn by 32 points. The Hawks rallied in the second term after a goalless first quarter to get a score on the board but the Cobras still went into the main break with an 18-point buffer. There was only 24 points in it by the beginning of the fourth quarter but Canterbury kicked seven goals to seal the deal, despite six majors from the home side. Liam Shearer (5) was only one of eleven individual goalkickers for the away side but took best-on honours for his efforts, with John Nicolopoulos kicking three to add to his tally. Positively, Hawthorn had Darcy Johnston (6), Aaron Downie (4), and Justin Raiti (4) in front of goal, and it showed, finishing with a scoreline of 18.9. Xavier Bryham was their best.
It was a 250th game to remember for Elsternwick stalwart Justin Hunter as he and his teammates left Holmes Todd Oval one-point winners in a thriller against familiar foes South Melbourne Districts. The game appeared to be on the Bloods’ terms for the better part of the day, with the Wickers struggling early to get on the board and kept goalless until the second quarter. A late rally from Elsternwick in the final term meant they were just able to overrun the away side. Oliver Dufficy (8) kicked more than half of his team’s majors, with Zephyr Howson (2), George Dixon (1) and Jack Cotton (1) the Bloods’ only remaining goalkickers. For the home side, aptly-named Matt Ball and David Convery contributed three goals each, but it was Dylan Jones (1) who topped the best-on list. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
For the first time this year, Emmaus St Leo’s will travel, heading to Allard Park to face a North Brunswick side eager to continue their winning ways. Both sides are heading into round four off gritty wins, with the Animals keen to get on the board away from home.

The Westbourne Grammarians will be fresh off a twoweek break as Richmond Central welcomes them to Kevin Bartlett Reserve. The Snakes are coming off a tough loss in round three and will look to rebound against a Warriors side yet to get on the board. A lossless Canterbury side will face South Melbourne Districts at Canterbury Sportsground, hoping to go 4-0 this early on in the season. The Bloods will be sore, coming off a fiercely-contested one-point loss, and be looking to rebound quickly against a tough opposition. In a similar fashion to their last meeting, the battle between Parkside and Hawthorn at Pitcher Park appears to be the game of the round. The Hawks are still yet to register their first win of the year, while the Red Devils are coming off what is arguably a surprise loss in round three. Elsternwick get the week off to rest after a tight round three win, and go into the bye sitting pretty on top of the ladder.

Razorbacks pass another test and Masala and the Falcons get their first wins Eley Park hosted Masala in what was a huge game for both teams. The Sharks were coming into this match following a loss to St John’s but they had a win on their record whilst the Tigers were coming off a devastating loss to Swinburne. Opposite to what we have seen from the Tigers so far this season, Masala started incredibly strong and went into the first break up 25 to 1. In the second, the Sharks hit the scoreboard kicking 3 goals whilst the Tigers kicked another 4 to go up by 31 at half-time. The second half didn’t see too much change as the Sharks kicked 5 goals to Masala’s 8 resulting in Eley Park finishing 8.7-55 to Masala’s 16.11-107 giving Masala their first win of the season. For Masala Cameron Young played one of his best games for the club kicking 4. Matt Decarne, Daniel Hoffman, Anthony Dorrington and Brandon Kelly kicked 2 goals each for the Tigers and Kelly was named best on ground. For the Sharks, Tim Johnston was the only multiple goal scorer with two goals. Ben Field, Jack Craig and Daniel O’Shea were among the best for the Sharks and Brandon Kelly, Jeremy Bondoux, Tom Williamson and the debuting Buom Koang were the best for the Tigers in their 52 point win.
St John’s faced their toughest competition to date as they faced off against the undefeated Swinburne at home in what was a game that could be a measuring stick for the rest of the division’s season. The game was a close and fairly low scoring back and forth contest all day. As the teams headed into their first break, the Razorbacks found themselves up four goals to two. However, the JOC’s had a defensively strong second quarter only allowing 1 goal whilst they kicked 2. Leading by 7 going into the third quarter, the Razorbacks set themselves the task of holding the lead which they did so by extending the lead to 14 as the teams headed into the final break. Swinburne started off the 4th extremely strong kicking the first two goals of the final term however these would be the only goals they’d kick that quarter. The momentum started to swing as the JOC’s kicked the next two goals however the Razorbacks were able to hold them off eventually winning by 12 points. Jason Naffa and Corey Ely kicked two goals each for the JOC’s whilst Joseph Zambelli kicked four goals for Swinburne. For St Johns, Jasper Hall, Ethan Hope and Matthew Bennett were the best on ground. Swinburne’s best included Zachary Lassey, Zachary Cooke and Brent Hodson.
Eley Park will now face Swinburne away in what is another important yet tough game for the Sharks. Masala will face their biggest rivals in St Johns in what will possibly be the match of the round.
St John’s will look to rebound as they face Masala away in what is an important game for both teams. Swinburne will host Eley Park in what is a very winnable game for the Razorbacks. Both Albert Park and Box Hill North were in desperate need of a win as the two teams met on a rare Sunday afternoon clash. Albert Park started the game off strong as they went into the quarter time break up 4 goals to 1. After a fairly even second quarter, the Falcons maintained the lead, being up by 21 points against the Demons. Albert Park then put together a big third quarter adding another four goals to the scoreboard whilst only allowing the Demons a goal. Down by 45 heading into the fourth quarter, Box Hill needed to get going early if they were to have any chance in the game. The Demons instantly changed the momentum of the game however despite kicking four goals to the Falcons’ zero, inaccurate kicking

St Kevin’s dominance over the competition continues after 108 point demolition It was a hot start for Caulfield Grammarians, scoring within a minute when they came up against West Brunswick. A fast moving tight contest was what followed with both teams taking the ball end to end on many occasions but neither was able to punish either side for much of the game. Some slick ball movement in the second led to a breakthrough on the scoreboard for Caulfield and West Brunswick did all they could to keep themselves in the game. It was Caulfield again though who took advantage of the space they found to score again. A very impressive snap at goal saw West Brunswick score right before the main break. The pattern continued in the second half with West Brunswick scoring first in the third quarter which got the crowd involved and gave them the confidence they were looking for. They took a narrow lead into the final term and with both teams kicking a goal a piece in the final term, it was a thrilling 3 point victory for West Brunswick in the end.
The match between Kew and Melbourne Uni saw a matchup between third and fourth on the ladder. With Melbourne Uni making the most of their opportunities in the Premier Division it was a game that could easily go either way. Kew applied pressure to Melbourne Uni early on but scoring shots were few and far between for both sides. Kew were able to get ahead early on after a small lapse from the otherwise strong Melbourne Uni defence. Kew continued to keep ahead in a scrappy contest and held Melbourne Uni goalless until half time. Melbourne Uni scored early in the third to keep themselves in it but Kew backed it up to give themselves some breathing room. The effort from Melbourne Uni continued, it was Kew who were able to take advantage of turnovers to go into the last quarter with a comfortable lead. Kew continued to hold control of the play for the last quarter, despite Melbourne Uni’s best efforts leaving Kew to take second spot on the ladder. Old Xaverians and Marcellin were up next and it was a very tight contest in the first with neither team able to get control of the contest. Both sides were applying strong pressure on the ball and forcing mistakes. It took until the second quarter to see the first goal and Marcellin was able to get another to take a minor lead into the main break. Old Xaverians certainly had their chances but were inaccurate in front of goal. In the second half Old Xaverians stepped it up a notch, they found some accuracy and kicked 2 goals to get themselves the lead. Marcellin followed soon after with a goal of their own to set up for another close finish. Marcellin looked like they were going to get on top taking strong marks and getting multiple inside 50’s but the defence of old Xaverians stood strong, and they were able to get the all important goal to seal a thrilling victory in the last few minutes. St Mary’s Salesian and St Kevin’s faced off in a clash between top and bottom place on the ladder in a game that was always going to be a challenge for the bottom placed St Marys. St Kevin’s showed why they hold a commanding lead at the top of the ladder, coming out strong with a seven goal opening term where they kept St

Mary’s scoreless. St Kevin’s controlled much of the play throughout the game, and kept the pressure on St Marys whenever they had the ball. Another strong quarter in front of goals saw another 5 goals for St Kevins to the 1 that St Mary’s were able to get on the board. The stronghold on the game continued for St Kevins throughout the rest of the match, holding St Marys to one more scoring shot for the rest of the game and showing the rest of the competition that they are a force to be reckoned with.
