SEASON 2023 - May 6
The VAFA is all about community and our Clubs have always led the way in rallying support and awareness whilst advocating for important Community causes. These community focuses are many and varied, often influenced by traditional values and historical connections, or circumstances that have impacted their Club, or a cause that resonates powerfully with their culture and player / supporter group.
Last week I highlighted some of the great work done by our VAFA Clubs in respecting the ANZAC spirit that we celebrate as a nation each year. The time, resources and effort gone to by our Club volunteers to proudly recognise the service men and women who have and are keeping our country safe, shone out in the match day ceremonies.
This same approach is given by many other volunteers at Club, making positive impacts on the wider communities that we live in.
This weekend will see the celebration of the Hawthorn Amateurs FC ‘Wings’ event, a wonderful initiative that delivers an important mental health resource to that Club’s community.
I was fortunate enough to have attended this corresponding event last year where Tom Boyd spoke of his first hand experiences with mental health challenges. It was a powerful presentation and I’m sure this year’s event will also leave a lasting impression on the guests attending.
At the time of writing this, we are aware of the following VAFA Clubs promoting other important causes throughout the year:
• Pride and LGBTQIA - Kew, West Brunswick, Swinburne Uni, Melbourne University Womens
• First Nations - Preston Bullants, West Brunswick, University Blacks
• Multicultural - Preston Bullants,
• MND / Big Freeze - Old Scotch, De La Salle
Jason ReddickCEO
I know that Clubs like Melbourne Uni Women’s, Fitzroy, Mazenod and Brunswick are always active in these areas, so I’m sure this is not an exhaustive list by any means, but a great snapshot of the types of proud community causes that our Clubs champion.
We encourage all our Clubs to forward through to the VAFA any information about special upcoming events, so we can support the awareness of them through VAFA media to the broader community.
In addition to the individual Club focuses, the VAFA has designated four themed rounds for the season as follows:
• May 12-14: Breast Cancer Network Australia
• May 19-21: Umpire Appreciation Round
• June 23-25: Tackle Your Feelings
• July 21-23: TAC Road Safety Round
These rounds have been regular themes for the VAFA community, recognising women’s health, umpires, mental health, and youth safety. We will continue to monitor them and receive your feedback to ensure they reflect the needs and wants of our Association.
Whilst the AFL will be celebrating an umpires round a week earlier, however that falls on Mother’s Day (May 14) weekend when we have locked in a more appropriate focus on BCNA and women’s health.
It’s great to see that Oakleigh, Swinburne Uni and Old Scotch have already promoted their BCNA event to their community.
Often what we do off the field can be more important than what we do on the field.
Regardless of the match day scoreboards, our VAFA Clubs are leaving a proud legacy with their positive community impacts.
Enjoy the celebrations!

May the fourth (round) be with you
As we get into the first weekend of May, there’s plenty of questions swirling around leading into the conclusion of the first month of the 2023 William Buck Premier season.
Will St Kevin’s and Old Brighton continue to pull away from the rest of the competition?
Can Old Melburnians, University Blacks or Caulfield Grammarians find their first win of the season?
Where will the Australia Cup be won in the battle of the two oldest footballing schools, Old Melburnians and Old Scotch?
Who will come out on top in the battle of the Carmody Cup between Uni Blues and Old Xav’s?
As well as answering the questions above, I’m looking at four players in round four from each team that (hopefully) will enjoy reading about themselves, and lift to perform this weekend.
The RSN Xtra Match of the Day comes from Elsternwick Park in the 102nd meeting between Old Melburnians and Old Scotch.
OM’s have opened the year facing off against the reigning Premiers, and last year’s finalists Old Xaverians in the opening three weeks. It’s been one of the toughest starts to 2023.
Last week’s side featured a staggering 11 players who’ve played less than 7 senior games. It’s been wholesale changes for the Navy Blues. Jackson Paine, the club captain will have all eyes on him when 2:00 PM Saturday rolls around, he does lift on radio days.
He will need to be supported by Ben Harding, who’s put together a nice opening month with Old Melburnians. The two Ed’s of Paul Satterley’s team round out the awesome foursome, Michelmore and Nichols (the 2021 VAFA Rising Star winner).
The Cardinals are officially in the window. There’s no hiding that. Despite wanting to go under the radar. Mark Gnatt’s team blew the radar to smithereens with a 10-goal final quarter against University Blues last weekend. The whole competition is on notice.
Old Scotch have lost the last two matches against OM’s in the Australia Cup fixture. Doug Lawrence seems the perfect match up for Jackson Paine, an old fashioned full back v full forward that this sort of contest deserves. Aiden Franetic is leading the midfield with distinction, contested possessions and clearances are right in his wheelhouse. While James Tarrant and Tyler Sellers have already kicked 15 goals between them in the front half.
On paper, and on form, you can argue this one is in favour of Old Scotch, but I wouldn’t put it past Paul Satterley pulling a rabbit out of the hat in the coaches box ahead of the first bounce.
The other cup up for grabs this weekend is out at the Melbourne Uni Oval. University Blues welcome Old Xaverians home for the second installment of the Carmody Cup.
Established in 2022, Xav’s claimed the inaugural edition in Round 18 of last year. Prior to that victory, Blues have won the previous five encounters against Old Xav’s.
Inaccuracy in front of goal has plagued Guy Martyn’s troops in the first month of the season. They’re certainly getting enough looks at goal winning clearances, hitouts to advantage and inside 50’s against their opponents.
Was last week’s final quarter against the Cardinals an aberration, or is there more at play?
Ayce Cordy is a proud footballer, Marty Gleeson leads the defence, Sam Grimley is a presence up forward, while Charlie Furphy takes ownership of the wing. These four players will need to be on their game this weekend if they’re to trump the Old Xaverians.
The red and black mafia have used the opening month of the season as somewhat of a breeding ground for the next generation of stars. Through necessity and brilliant pre-season form, James Byrne has put his faith in 11 new faces throughout the first three rounds.
It’s a very different looking side that featured in the 2022 finals series. Oscar Duncan (Round 2 Rising Star nominee), Tommy McRae, Tom Dunne, Harry Bell, and Ed Niall, this is the next set of stars all from the under 19 program. In Round 3, none other than Jordan Kelly, the rest of the team that took to the field was from Xavier College, or through the ranks of Under 19’s and reserves.
Old Haileybury and Collegians will meet in William Buck Premier for the first time in 12 years. The last time they met, Round 18, 2011 - Collegians taking the chocolates.
Peter Gleadhill is the only player that remains from that contest. The newcomers in Daniel Ward’s side though will see themselves as a worthy opponent for the purple army.

Last weekend in the lead up to the game against University Blacks they were in search of respect from the rest of the competition. Brodie Steele, after a best on ground performance along with Corey Rich (4 goals) and Andreas Stefanakis bursting through the middle went a long way to putting the fellow nine sides in William Buck Premier on notice.
Lachie Treverton, 62 hitouts in round 2, 52 hitouts in round 3, have Collegians got a match up capable of locking down on the big ruckman?
On the flip side, has Daniel Ward got a match up for King Kenny Ong, and Gentleman Jim Bazzani in the midfield?
Matt Warren is the general in defence, and not much more needs to be said about the presence of Dave Mirra.
Outside of these four players, captain Sam Hibbins played minutes in the reserves on the weekend and is in line to be recalled, adding another string to Jared Rivers’ midfield bow.
Old Brighton head back home and will face off against Caulfield. The head-to-head battle is in favour of the Tonners (8-2), the last time the Fields won at BBO was in 2011.
Under Dan Donati, I’m expecting that formline to continue. When the Tonners were last at home, they set up the win against Old Haileybury with five goals in the first 12 minutes. The scoring power happens in patches for Old Brighton.
Four of the twelve quarters they’ve played this season, they have kicked five goals on more. Jamie Hope (Round 3 Rising Star nominee) has kicked eight goals for the season. Will it be Oscar Roberts in defence locking down on him?
Petrus Olivier, Tom Fisher and Harry Hill - Three best mates who reach milestones at the same time are a strong trio in the midfield. Max Lohan behind the ball needs more credit than he has been given.
Without Campbell Tweedie, it’s an opportunity for Guy McKenna to unleash his twin towers up forward - Julian Dobosz and Hugh Sandilands. Can they stretch the Brighton defence?
Over at T H King Oval, St Kevin’s are on an 11-game winning streak. Dating back to Round 13 of 2022. The last four times playing the University Blacks has fallen the way of SKOB.
There’s plenty of hype around Josh and Mitch Wallis. Away from the two high-prized recruits, Nicholas Sing has slotted into the backline with relative ease. Given the shoes he has been asked to fill, left vacant by Conor Ross, Sing has held his own throughout the opening month of the season.
Dale Bower certainly has the cattle capable of mixing it with the best in William Buck Premier. Fingers are crossed for Josh Steadman to put his hand up and be given the all-clear for Saturday. He is the most important player to the Blacks line-up.
Co-captain Campbell Moorfield has put his name forward for Big V selection through our eyes. Lachie Knight has been durable and consistent for Uni Blacks across a number of years, while Ayui Makeing is primed to take a mark of the year contender before the end of 2023.
This weekend promises to answer the questions above, while at the same time providing us with a whole new set of questions next week as the competition continues to play out.

Kew and SKOB remain undefeated whilst Coburg gallant in defeat
Round 3 saw another exciting weekend in William Buck Premier Women’s, with Kew and SKOB remaining undefeated, whilst Coburg became the team closest to beating SKOB so far this year.
Collegians were handed their first loss of the season, as Kew continued on a dominant undefeated run. After being held goalless in the first quarter, Kew got on top for the rest of the game, kicking 3.6 to Collegians 1.1, with Collegians unable to score again after three quarter time.
Last years Grand Finalists are out for revenge in 2023, and doing so at the moment without the competitions best player, Dakota Villiva.
Collegians have made the jump into William Buck Premier and holding their own, despite going down to the Bears, coach Dom Lucarelli will be pleased with the start to the 2023 campaign for the ladies of the Harry Trott Oval.
Amelia Dawborn and Ashlea Melnikas both scored for Kew to be in the best players, whilst Lucy Aitken was best on ground.
Collegians will come up against West Brunswick next weekend, whilst Kew play Old Xavs.
Old Xaverians now sit winless at the bottom of the ladder and suffered another heavy loss at the hands of West Brunswick by 46 points.
The contest was even in the first quarter, with West Brunswick only leading by three. However, after the first quarter, Xavs were only able to score one point, compared to the Magpies’ 44 points.
It’s been a rough start to 2023 for the red and black army. Monica Clarke and Keirah Dowd were shining lights for Xavs’ in defeat which will provide some hope going forward.
Brighdin Walsh was the most damaging player on the ground with three goals, supported by Genevieve Walsh, also amongst the best for the Magpies.
Xavs have another tough game next weekend against Kew, whilst West Brunswick will play the third placed Collegians.
Fitzroy showed fight for the first half of the game, and were on top of Caulfield the entire first half. However, they’d only managed to score 1 point in the third quarter compared to Caulfield’s 16.
In the fourth quarter, the Fields blew the game out of the water, scoring four goals to Fitzroy’s one. Tarryn Hurst kicked three for Caulfield, whilst Ella Baxter was best on. For Fitzroy, Simone Mooney was best on and managed to finish with a goal.
Caulfield will play Melbourne Uni next weekend in their home game, whilst Fitzroy come up in a tough match against Coburg at Piranha Park.
The was the most entertaining match of the round, and Coburg stepped right up to the challenge, becoming the closest team to beating SKOB this year. Despite the loss, the Lions should be proud of their efforts and continued their impressive start to their first season.
The biggest margin of the game wasn’t until the final siren went, with SKOB eventual 12 point winners. Prior to this, the Lions kept it to two points at half time and eight at three-quarter time, sticking with the reigning premiers the entire game.
Bree Doyle and Sarah Betts continued their impressive seasons to be best on once again, whilst Molly Simpson booted three for SKOB. For Coburg, Ruby Taranto kicked two, whilst Lauren Collis was their best.
Coburg will come up against Fitzroy next week, whilst St Kevins will play Old Scotch in a grudge match.

This was a big win for Old Scotch, beating Melbourne Uni at their home ground by 41 points. Scotch were behind in the first quarter, but kept Melbourne Uni to only one point after quarter time. Had they kicked more accurately, it could’ve been an even bigger margin at the final siren.
Millie Fraser Smith kicked two goals for Old Scotch, however it was youngster Sarah Poustie at the age of 17 who was their best.
Asha Price was a shining light for Melbourne Uni in defeat, kicking a goal and part of their best. Host of Inside the Boundary, Lucy Watkin also found her way onto the scoresheet for the Mugars.

Roys and Snowdog’s Remain Undefeated in a Thrilling Round of Footy
Premier B football was greeted with splendid weather on Saturday as perfect conditions set up for close encounters across the board. It was a highly anticipated round of footy that continued to see some sides dominate and others struggling to keep up.
It was tipped to be a close clash between Beaumaris and St Bernard’s but the Snowdog’s made a big statement on Saturday as they comfortably accounted for the Sharks by 39 points.
Played out at the Snakepit, St Bernard’s had 10 shots on goal in the opening quarter, but inaccuracy saw them sitting on a 16-point lead at the quarter time break. The second quarter saw the Snowdog’s hit their straps and with five goals to one and from there they kicked away. Despite a goalless last quarter the Snowdog’s have planted themselves as the major threat in Premier B.
Dominic Sullivan led from the front for St Bernard’s with three goals along with Marcus Holland who also registered three majors. Meanwhile Charlie Vague has maintained his glorious start to the year with another best on ground performance for the Snowdog’s. As for Beaumaris, the weekend’s defeat was their first of the season but with plenty of talent at the Sharks this year they will no doubt be able to rebound.
De La Salle were back in the winners circle this week after a straightforward 82-point win over AJAX to claim the Bernie Sheehy Cup. With 10 goals in the opening half of football, De La Salle were able to dominate the midfield battle and won most of the contested ball with a familiar name hitting the scoreboard in Adrian Indovino who booted four majors.
De La Salle had 10 individual goal kickers and will take a world of confidence from the win after a tough loss to St Bernard’s in round 2. Meanwhile AJAX have continued to struggle through the beginning of the season as they try and build up some experience in their young list.
They were competitive in round 2 against Trinity but inaccuracy let them down against De La Salle and despite a gallant effort from Remy Spicer they couldn’t stick on.
The other big win in Premier B came from St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers who were dominant against Williamstown CYMS. Caleb Lewis had a day to remember with six goals and a best on ground performance for the Tigers. With only 18 points in it at three quarter time the Tigers were able to withstand the attack from Williamstown with the end margin being 30 points.
Williamstown were competitive throughout the afternoon Harrison Miller kicked three goals to keep his side in the contest along with Liam Conway who starred for Williamstown. Williamstown are another side with a young list but have shown to be competitive and no doubt there will be some wins to follow on from their efforts.
The final two games of the round turned out to be tight tussles with Old Trinity winning by just five points against Monash Blues. Old Trinity were out of the blocks well and had the early jump ahead of the Blues with an 18 point lead at the first break. From there however, Monash hit back keeping Trinity to just one goal in the second quarter with the half time margin cut back to four points.
Nicholas Darling was influential in mounting his side’s effort with four majors while both Charlie and Sam Simpson were dominant around the ball. The blues led at the final change by one point but Trinity ended up on top in the last quarter kicking two more goals.
Young Myles Scott had a day out with six goals and fan favourite Harry Thompson was huge for Trinity when it mattered.
The second thriller saw Fitzroy just get over the line against Old Geelong by a single point. It was a classic ding-dong battle that saw both the main break and the final change separate the sides also by one point. Sam Barnett enjoyed three goals with the home crowd behind him with Nicholas Dixon also becoming influential for Old Geelong.
Fitzroy, however, now remain undefeated thanks to three goals to Jack McKay who was busy down forward along with Charlie Faubel and Jack Hart. Nino Lazzaro was also outstanding for the Roys as they continued with St Bernard’s to emerge as potential candidates to take the title in 2023.
PREMIER B MEN’S THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 8
So, what is there to look forward to in round four?
AJAX will have the challenge of heading to the Snakepit to take on the undefeated St Bernard’s. It’s a tough task for AJAX with St Bernard’s continuing to be impressive this season.
Monash Blues will host De La Salle and will be looking to record their maiden Premier B win this season after coming so close in round 3.
Beaumaris will take on the young Williamstown side which will see Williamstown also searching for their first win this season while Old Geelong will be looking to go one better than round 3 as they take on St Bedes/Mentone.
The final game of the round will involve ladder leaders Fitzroy up against Old Trinity at the Brunswick Street Oval. Trinity have the talent in their side to knock off the Roys but will have to bring their A-game which we know is quality.
It will be a great contest to keep an eye on so round 4 is sure to bring us many more talking points to discuss at the weekend’s conclusion.

Blues demote Cobras from the top of the ladder
Highs were plentiful this over the weekend for many Premier B Women’s players over the weekend.
After slithering their way to the top last week, the Old Yarra Cobras headed to the den of the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.
The Tigers started off strong, scoring 14 points to the Cobra’s 1 in the first quarter. With not much action in the second term, both teams picked up their game, with 22 points each at the end of the third period. The final quarter is when the Tigers put the game to bed creating a 21-point margin between the final scores.
The Tigers approached the game with great determination and due to 6 goal-kicking superstars and best-on-field
Nina Coghill, they were able to attain their first win of the season. Many of the players were also able to score their first goal for the season with other players such as Madeline Pearson continuing her goal-kicking efforts from last week.
Unfortunately for the Cobras who were coming off a week of highs, they were not able to maintain their victory streak. This was not for the lack of effort from goal-kickers Tahlia Limburg, Madeline Collins and Penny Cula-Reid, as well as best-player Jacqui Morton.
Next week the Cobras will be heading North Brunswick way while the Tigers take on Aquinas on their home roots. Monash Blues, coming off a win, undertook a battle at their home ground against Hawthorn AFC who unfortunately suffered another loss.
The Blues have continued their winning streak for the third week in a row, regaining their spot at the top of the ladder. They played with incredible strength and dedication from the get-go and throughout the entirety of the match with leading goal kicker Molly McFarlane obtaining three goals.
Ella Stephenson, Stacey Barbagallo, Johannah Dallas kicked two goals each as well as Ainslee Elliott who was deemed best player.
Can the Blues continue their winning streak at the home of Mazenod next round?
The Hawks are left feeling defeated for the second week in a row. With players such as Mia Mathias attaining two goals and Alexander Crough’s abilities on the field, it is with hope the team can secure a win, in a familiar environment, with a home match coming up against Richmond Central.
Aquinas achieved victory for the first time this season against Richmond Central. It was a game where accuracy needed to be improved for both teams with Richmond scoring 4 behinds and Aquinas OC securing one goal and six behinds.
Just like Hawthorn, it is Richmond’s second loss in a row and with these teams going head-to-head next week one of them will hopefully once again be victorious. With fantastic efforts from Laura Quinton, Tenille Moselen, Claire Schelske, Kellie Birkett, and Julie Dortmans a win may be on the horizon for the Hawks.
Aquinas OC came off a week with a bye, with the energy and confidence to succeed. All thanks to the goalkicking machine Meg Dargan, putting on a best-player performance and brought her team over the line to achieve their first win this year. Can they continue their triumph next round in Mentone against the sizzling St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers?
Continuing their success were the ladies from Brunswick, who went head-to-head against Mazenod. It was once again a game where the accuracy of the players was crucial but needed to be improved.
Mazenod OC was the first to make their mark and was in front up until the third term when Brunswick lifted their game, generating a 21-point margin in the final scores. Stephanie Rogers kicked Mazenod OC’s only goal and Mikaela Buccella contributed her skills assisting her team to reduce the margin.

Back on their home deck next week Mazenod OC will go head-to-head against the mighty Monash Blues.
Brunswick’s Danielle Hagan had a sensational weekend attaining two goals and playing alongside best-on-field Wyinta-Cengiz Mawson to secure a win for their team. They continued their incredible efforts from last weekend and with a bye coming up next week they will hopefully come back stronger than ever in round five.
It is Illiana Zarfiriou from the Cobras with seven goals in the lead with Molly McFarlane from the Blues sneaking up behind on six goals. Tahila Limburg also from the Cobras is in third with five goals, followed by Ainslee Elliott and Danielle Hagan both on three goals.
With the mighty Monash Blues back on top of the ladder, supporters question whether they will be able to maintain their place, or will there be a new team in the lead next week.

Vultures swoop in on maiden win while Old Camberwell take top spot
After three rounds of football, the Premier C ladder is starting to take shape as numerous potential contenders emerge and others stumble out of the blocks.
Parkdale has bounced back tremendously at home, pushing Marcellin to 0-3 on the back of a strong 43-point win at Gerry Green Reserve. Marcellin were always a couple steps behind, and unfortunately couldn’t match the Vultures’ firepower up front as they booted 17 goals on 30 registered attempts.
The hosts kicked six goals to their visitors’ three in both the first and third quarters to really assert themselves and get their engine running in season 2023.
The win is the Vultures’ first of the year and was highlighted by the performance of star Ryan Macdermid who slammed home an outstanding nine goals to solidify himself as a true contender to lead all goal-kickers this season.
He was deservedly named the best player on the ground, while Daniel Di Paola was named best for the losing Marcellin side, they’ll now travel to face a rested PEGS. Parkdale will hope they can create a mini winning streak beginning with a win over the Hampton Rovers this Saturday.
Old Camberwell have used their home ground to full advantage, taking down the Hampton Rovers, who showed strong form in round one but have suffered backto-back losses since.
The win was set up by an excellent five-goal-to-two opening term, giving the hosts an 18-point lead at the first change.
The travelling Rovers then fought back and won the second term by a goal to trim the deficit to just two straight kicks, but their impending inaccuracy eventually cost them a real shot at victory.
They kicked just five behinds to the Wellers two goals in the third term and then added just two behinds in the final quarter to finish with 5.12 for the match, really becoming their own worst enemy in the 44-point loss.
Old Camberwell kicked four goals straight in final term to run away with the win, thanks to standout performances from Kellan Percy and Harry Laukens.
As for the visitors, Christian Carnovale was best afield, his side will face off with Parkdale on the road this weekend, while the Wellers will have the bye.
Ormond and Mazenod have submitted their contender for game of the year with an outstandingly close contest at E.E Gunn Reserve.
After trailing by eight points at quarter time and 25 points at halftime, Ormond resurrected their chances of a home victory with a six-goal to three third term which tied the scores at 68.
The Nodders accuracy through three quarters must be commended though, it’s most likely the catalyst for their clutch win, kicking a remarkable 11.2 by three quarter time.
They again generated more shots in the final term, but were much more inaccurate, however they did enough to escape with a four point win as both sides booted four goals in the race to the siren, as Mazenod’s 15.7.97 outdid Ormond’s 14.9.93.
What made the game even more even was the fact that both sides had a player boot five goals, Jeremy Simon for Ormond and Jack Caspersz for Mazenod and each with one that kicked three goals in Zachary Dakis and the best on ground man Shaun Lovell.
Mazenod’s second straight win sees them generate momentum for their upcoming fixture against Old Carey, while Ormond will look to bounce back against Old Ivanhoe.
Old Ivanhoe have got the job done against a brave Old Carey, who showed plenty of fight and valour at Carey Sports Complex.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 12 PREMIER C MEN’S Aiden Box Access Team Lists on GameDay via VAFA.com.au
Carey started brilliantly out of the blocks, playing some clean footy to hold a slim lead, by a solitary point at quarter time kicking three-straight to Ivanhoe’s 2.5.
The hosts then continued to take the fight right up to their top four hopeful visitors in the second quarter as they really just kept teaching them a class in goal kicking accuracy.
The disparity was clear at halftime as Old Carey led by three points, but had kicked two more majors, Old Ivanhoe’s scoreline reading an ugly 4.10.34.
Despite even more inaccuracy in the premiership quarter, the visiting Old Ivanhoe were able to wrestle back the lead thanks to an improved defensive effort, holding their now bottom-of-the-ladder hosts to just one goal, while slotting three of their own.
It was the final term where it both all came together for Jarrod Gieschen’s men, and all fell apart for Aaron Bailey’s squad, as the visitors poured on five goals to two to run out 26-point winners.
Patrick Naish was adjudged best on ground while Elliot Nicholl slotted three majors, while for Old Carey, Luca Anderson who was best and Mitch Wooffindin who kicked two.
Wooffindin and the rest of Bailey’s men will now face Mazenod away from home while a home date with Ormond awaits Old Ivanhoe.

Ivanhoe Unfurls Drought-Breaking Flag on a Dry Night
When Ivanhoe AFC won the Division 2 premiership last year, the Hoers broke a senior premiership drought going back to 1969. A deluge in the Round 1 grand final re-match against a rampant West Brunswick didn’t put a dampener on the 2022 grand final win by the drought breakers of Ivanhoe. The club celebrated with an official senior flag unfurling before their home game against UHS-VU under lights at Ivanhoe Park in Round 3 last Saturday (April 29). To the relief of players, past players and supporters, it was a cool dry night when Hoers president Peter Rawley and secretary Ross Toogood hoisted the prized senior pennant in front of assembled players from both clubs after the reserves game. Rawley spoke of the hard work involved in achieving the ultimate reward in football and praised players, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters for helping to make 2022 one of the most memorable seasons in the club’s history. Ivanhoe’s Men’s Thirds unfurled their 2022 Division 4 premiership flag before it rained in Round 1.
Ivanhoe AFC is hosting a charity luncheon for World Ovarian Cancer Day this Saturday (May 6). The luncheon starts at 12.30pm and will run until 2pm when the Ivanhoe Ivies, who are in women’s Division 2, play Old Melburnians.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Sarah Poustie
The VAFA congratulates Sarah Poustie from Old Scotch on receiving the Round 3 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nomination in her senior footy debut from the weekend.
What the club said:
Old Scotch Stars Coach Dean Anderson said “The 17-year-old Sarah Poustie made the most of her break from the Coates Talent League where she represents Oakleigh Chargers to play her first game for the Old Scotch Stars on Sunday.
Sporting a distinctive coloured helmet Sarah went about her senior footy debut with great style, courage, and determination, named best on by our coaching panel.
Despite juggling school & Chargers commitments Sarah has been a regular trainer with us, demonstrating her determination to develop her football prowess. Sarah’s hand and foot skills were on display for everyone to see on Sunday as she racked up quality possessions against tough opposition.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
James Hope
The VAFA congratulates James Hope, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 3. Hope was a key performer in Old Brighton’s win over Collegians, booting 5 goals, affirming his position in the forward line in the senior side in William Buck Premier Men’s.
What the club said:
Jamie Hope joined Old Brighton this season, having been a member of Brighton Grammar School’s APS Premiership side in 2022.
Hopey was one of 5 debutants in Old Brighton’s Round 1 win against Uni Blacks, where he kicked 3 goals. He followed that performance up with a 5-goal haul against Collegians on the weekend. He has slotted into senior football nicely, with great composure and skill.
Jamie is on North’s VFL list, but hopefully will be available to play a few more games for the Tonners at times throughout the season.
“Jamie has put together two great games for us to start the season. He works hard, is clean and has been polished in front of goals. We were really impressed how he stood up in the fourth quarter on Saturday when Collegians had some momentum, and the game was there to be won.”
“You can tell he is really enjoying his footy, and his teammates love having him in the side.” Dan Donati, Old Brighton Coach.

Top 3 gathering early momentum, whilst Kew is back on the winners list for 2023
The frontrunners in Division 1 Men’s are starting to pull away from the pack, whilst Kew recorded their first win for the year.
Here’s how the weekend’s action played out.
Glen Eira took on Prahran at Packer Park in a very low scoring affair. Both teams came into the clash comfortably defeating their opponents last week.
The game saw a one goal per team first term, which really set the tone for the entirety of the match. Stuart Carey, Will Green and also Keiffer Smith-Cameron key pillars for the Gryphons during the game as they really tried to get the best for Glen Eira. Half time score combined less than thirty points with something needing to happen to break the game open but it wasn’t to be.
More hard slogging tough football which saw the score finish in a Glen Eira victory taking them to a 3-0 start, winning 4.11 35 to Prahran 3.7 25.
Therry Penola continue to impress this season as they took on the newcomers West Brunswick at the John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. But it wasn’t to be for the first half as West Brunswick took the honours as forward Jethro Calma-Holt and key player Thomas Zafiropoulos was helped the Lions at bay being able to convert key shots, when needed too.
Whilst being behind Therry never lost hope busting out of the blocks with forwards Castaldi and Ryan put the Lions back the lead which served them well to take the lead at three quarter time leading by 6 points. The game took another turn with West Brunswick coming back at them to snatch back the game, but wasn’t to be with Therry led by Costello and Egglestone were able to guide the Lions to a thriller of a victory winning 11.11 77 to West Brunswick 10.10 70.
Kew is back and much better for it, snatching their first victory for 2023 against Preston at Preston.
It did not take a long time for the Bears to find their mojo as they had eleven scoring shots to three at quarter time. Bears forward Michael Hannon to get back to his 2022 best as he looked on song to get Kew over the line booting a handy four goals, whilst his trusty assistant Ned Walters bagged three goals.
Preston won’t be too disheartened at the loss as they had a lot of fighters Liam McLeod, Pat Daves were handy in front of the goals as they were some of Preston’s best on the day, Kew coming away with the win getting the season back on track for 2023 winning by 41 points.
Oakleigh took on Old Peninsula at the W.A Scammell Reserve and looked on song from the first bounce. Blasting out of the gates early it didn’t take long for Oakleigh to find the goal square as they bounded eight straight goals to the Pirates two.
Aaron Cloke and Eddie Standish seemed like they had no issues in finding the goals as they pounded 5 goals individually. Then a change of attitude by Old Peninsula saw them kick five goals in the second to slightly cut back the margin Bailey Payze and Ben Stewart were handy to string goals together, but as the Krushers have done consistently well this year pushed the margin back to their favour as they took the game in their own hands never letting the game go as they too the victory off Old Peninsula coming away with a solid win as Eddie Standish was best on ground in their victory.
Ivanhoe AFC hosted UHS-VU on Saturday and encountered a classic of a game.

The game started with both bursting out of the blocks early as there was a point in it at quarter time with Ivanhoe with the early advantage. Ash Close continued from his 2022 dominance in Div 2 and transpired it to Div 1 as he set his sights on a bag.
He was was on song kicking five goals which was seeing Ivanhoe take 75% of the game in the lead, UHS was not done as they were in the game but not able to capitalise on goal scores despite having five more shots.
James McGee stepped up for UHS kicking three much needed goals to really help the boys from Brens Oval stay in the game. With scores level at the final change it was down to who was really going to break first. It was UHS really with the momentum with five goals in the last term to sink Ivanhoe’s chances of getting the win, another classic nonetheless, with UHS taking 2023 by storm being 3-0 winning.
Round 4 sees Therry Penola face off against Prahran to open the round, UHS-VU are looking to make it four wins in a row playing host to Old Peninsula. West Brunswick are back at home against Oakleigh, can they stop Aaron Cloke? The Bears will face the Hoers at Victoria Park and Preston Bullants will be looking for their first win when they face the ladder leaders, Glen Eira.

The Devils take Revenge as St Mary’s have plenty to sing about
Division 2 Men’s came out firing for a gripping third round as the ladder begins to hint at the behemoths of the division.
Old foes Parkside and South Melbourne Districts met for the first time since the thunderous Division 3 grand final was swept up by the swans.
This time it was Parkside who had the last laugh on Saturday with a commanding 48 point win at home. The Swans stormed to Pitcher Park with a roster filled to the brim with talent, Sfetkidis and Andrew, a miracle goal from Clifford forty metres out. Regardless of their creativity with the footy the Swans couldn’t keep up with the quick ball movement of the Devils.
Hamilton proved his value once more, dominating with his height in the air yet still crumbed like a seasoned veteran on the ground, and once the handball chain begun there was no doubt the ball would enter the Devils fifty. Logozzo, Romano, Holden and Cotter governed the in and under, capitalising on their quick footwork and tough physicality.
Parkside tactics and set up discipline reigned supreme as forwards worked hard for leads while the backline refused to allow any space whatsoever for the Swans. Overall it was the chemistry of the mighty Devils that made its mark on the scoreboard which lead to some tensions and roughing up in the 2nd quarter to the third and fourth. The Devils take their revenge in unquestionable fashion and we’re all be on the edges of our seat for an in-form Brunswick next week.
St Mary’s Salesian never die attitude sent Old Paradians home packing at Ferndale Park.
Round 12, 2021 was the last time the boys of St Mary’s were singing their song. They would’ve belted this one out with plenty of gusto. After 22 straight losses the club produced a win for the ages. Trailing by four points at the end of three quarter time, the Saints booted six goals in the fourth quarter resulting in a 29 point victory lap.
Tricario, Macmillan and Mattiske’s skillset proved too much for the Raiders providing much opportunity for Elliston’s flair going home with four goals.
A first win of the season is sure to bring a smile to the face of Saints fans and may even be the start of something spectacular. They’ll be keen to keep the momentum going as they head out to take on Whitefriars in Round 4.
Koonung Park held a nail-biting contest between the Old Yarra Cobras and Whitefriars. The Friars led by nine points by the end of the first quarter, but it was the Cobras who stormed ahead booting five goals in the second to turn the tables.
Cobras bigger bodies forced tough contest wins which resulted in a domination through the corridor, clever ball movement and fast footy from the expertise of Chipman, Fleming and Falkingham. Nathan Sambevski demonstrated once more the value his added to the squad kicking three. By halftime Coach Lucas Matthews demonstrated his genius re-arranging tactics and formulating a game plan more in line with Friar footy.
An increase in intensity around the contest and stoppage re-structures in an attempt to circumvent Cobras big bodies favoured a 1 v 1 battle on the inside. Winning these contests made the Friars dangerous providing more opportunity to capitalise on their talent. Pat Cotter seems to only get better and better in tandem with the skill of Max Warrick and Ryan Turner who created fast ball movement and breaking lines to allow star forwards Daniel Wood and Sam Keisiker to win the tough 1 v 1 contest.
Wood left another squad speechless adding another five goals to his now 17 goal tally. Although the Cobras refused to take ‘no’ for an answer the neck and neck comeback was left too late as the Friars snag a six point victory by the final siren. Overall the Friars are cunning, disciplined and adaptable. A squad of pure skill with the admixture of clever tactics, analysts are struggling to identify any weaknesses within the fighting Friars.
Brunswick take flight to the top of the Division 2 Men’s ladder in another impressive display of physicality and vigour with a 62 point win over Bulleen Templestowe. The Bullants couldn’t quite get going under the frustrating pressure Brunswick always bring to the table.

Bulleen Templestowe: J. Cortese, D. Dakin, S. Harisiou, M. Moore, B. Wilson, J. Cowell
A slight change in setup shined a new side to the squad for the young team. But what continues to surprise even the most avid fans is the constant discipline structurally, a terror partnership with their hunger for the footy. Nick Burgin had a spectacle of a game, always reliable and tough around the footy, he left everyone speechless asking, who says a midfielder can’t kick five? Jake Ralston’s tough physicality was a nightmare for the Bullants down back in partnership with Tahj Haddock.
Familiar faces Haddad, Mckenzie and Wilson dominate the field, creating opportunities and producing pressure. 3-0 Brunswick have set the tone for the division, high intensity and clever footy.
For the first time this year, MHSOB walked off the ground as winners overcoming Aquinas by 31 points away from home. Holding the home side goalless in the first half, the Unicorns were able to set up a 40-point lead at the main change.
Mathew Pereira slammed home five majors to take his tally to seven from the opening three rounds, he was supported in attack by Hugh Radcliffe-Smith (4 goals). Zach Smooker was named the best player on the ground. The win puts them with a clump of five sides who’ve recorded one win, and two losses from the opening three rounds.
The Unicorns return home this weekend facing off against South Melbourne looking to even the tally in the win-loss column to conclude the opening month in 2023.

Opening quarter blitzes from the Animals, the Snakes and the Hawks
The third round of VAFA football is in the books, and there were some exciting matchups that took place over the weekend.
From blowout victories to nail-biting finishes, this round had it all. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key games and results from Division 3.
First up, the Wattle Park took on La Trobe University in a match that saw the Animals run rampant, securing a comfortable 90-point win.
A six-goal opening quarter set up the victory for the Animals. Nathan Bird was the star of the show, scoring four goals and leading the team to an easy victory.
With players like Baxter, Schache, Bird and Davis in their ranks, the Animals could be a real force to be reckoned with. They have started the season with two wins from three matches and building some genuine confidence through the opening month of the season.
La Trobe’s, Matt Ogle has been an early season shining light, after one goal in round one, two goals in round two, he managed to find three girls in round three. How many are set for the record books in round four?
Canterbury Cobras went head-to-head with Elsternwick, the two sides who made up the top four in 2022 but were the unlucky losers.
After holding a 13-point lead at half-time, the Wicks pulled away with a strong second half. It was a dominant performance in the midfield and goal-kicking department with Daniel Marchese kicking four majors.
Despite the loss, the Cobras can take some solace in Tommy Lowden’s impressive performance, as he continued his quest to be the league’s leading goal-kicker.
In the battle of the bottom, the winless Richmond Central faced off against the rising Swinburne University
The Snakes were on fire from the first bounce with 8-goals in the first quarter. Keeping Swinburne to 6-goals across the first three quarters, the final quarter became a shootout with the margin beyond doubt.
A total of 14 goals were kicked, Benson Adams was the standout player, scoring an impressive seven goals to lead his team to victory.
Last but not least, Hawthorn AFC took on the powerhouse of the league, Power House AFC. The Hawks managed to secure their biggest win of the season so far, with a 20-point victory over their formidable opponents.
The game was a true test of both teams, keeping Power House goalless in the opening term went a long way to the Hawks winning the contest. Power House attempted to fight their way back from 27 points down at three quarter time, but couldn’t make up the ground.

A contender emerges as two matches see a battle to the end. Chapter 3: Pressure
Round three of the season saw a team put themselves forward as the team to beat and the frontrunners for the flag as well as two close contests played in great spirits.
North Brunswick faced off against Eley Park in a game where both sides needed a win but for different reasons. The Bulls wanting to keep their foot on the accelerator and the Sharks needed a win to get their season back on track. The Bulls got off to the dream start with a mammoth 10-goal first quarter that they were able to maintain whilst keeping the Sharks scoreless. A major comeback was needed after half-time if the Sharks were to comeback from being 85 points down.
The Bulls put those chances to rest after one of the biggest quarters of the season so far, adding a whopping 12 goals, extending the Bulls’ margin out to 155 points. In the end, it was the Bulls that ran out with a dominant 162-point win over the Sharks.
Major goal scorers for the Bulls were Andrew Ramzy (8), James Miralles Lombardo (3) and Ashley Rae (3). Kane Scanlon had 2 goals for the Sharks. The best for the Bulls were Gabriel Carrubba, Jacob Cornejo and Andrew Ramzy. The best for the Sharks were Benjamin Ferguson, Will Male and Alex Penkethman. The Bulls will now play their first game of the season away from Allard Park as they make the trip to take on St Johns. Eley Park will be back on their home deck as they look to defeat the Falcons.
Box Hill North and St Johns battled in a fixture that either team was capable of taking out. The Demons got off to a great start with a 5-goal quarter whilst managing to keep the JOCs to two goals, putting the pressure on early and holding a 20-point lead at quarter time. The JOCs then rebounded in the second quarter with four goals of their own, but the Demons went in with a 13-point lead at halftime.
Both teams tried to get the edge over the other in the third however it was a major stalemate with both teams adding four goals to their tallies, resulting in the margin heading into the final quarter, adjusting to a 12-point Demons lead. The final quarter was a nail-biter with inaccurate goal kicking costing the JOCs a victory. Despite having 10 scoring shots they were only able to kick a solitary major which wasn’t enough to outscore the Demons who escape with a 10-point win.
Alexander Williams and Jack Dullard both kicked three goals for the Demons whilst Kristian Smythe added 2 of his own. Benjamin Ayche had a quality day up forward with five goals. The best for the Demons were Alexander Williams, Aaron D’Amato and Rowan Lawrence. The best for the JOCs were Ethan Hope, Benjamin Ayache and Brendan Ash. The Demons look to continue their momentum as they host Masala whilst the JOCs will look at rebounding when they face leading contenders North Brunswick at home.
Masala welcomed Albert Park as both sides faced off in one of the closest matches for the round. The Falcons came out swooping early with a strong 6-goal start whilst holding the Tigers to a 3-goal first quarter which gave them a 17-point lead at the first break. With the sun coming out from behind the clouds, the Tigers had a huge second quarter kicking seven goals which helped them not just get back into the game but gave them a 21-point lead at the major break.
The third quarter saw an even quarter with both teams adding two goals to their totals which saw Masala take on a 24-point lead, a lead which could’ve been larger if the Tigers capitalised on their 10 scoring shots for the quarter. Despite having a great final quarter with some major efforts by Falcon Jack Lee up forward, a 5-goal quarter for the Falcons was not enough to take over the Tigers who had a 4-goal final quarter to win a close and well-played match by 19 points.

MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Clare Woodhouse (Brunswick Renegades)
Clare Woodhouse is the first Renegades player to reach 100 matches, hitting this milestone in Round 1 of the 2023 Season. All current and past Renegades gathered for the ten-year reunion of the women’s team in the clubrooms as well as to celebrate Woodhouse’s achievement. She has been with the Renegades since the beginning and has played a total of 266 games, including stints at Box Hill and Melbourne University. Woodhouse is the captain of the seniors and is looking forward to Brunswick juniors coming through the ranks to play alongside with the Renegades. When she started playing football as a 14-year-old for Box Hill in 1997, there were only a handful of female teams in the whole of Victoria, and she had to play with grown women. Clare has said, “The growth of the women’s game over the past two decades has been “amazing”. Photo credit: The Brunswick Voice.
Congratulations to Emily Joyce on reaching 50 games for Old Scotch Football Club, all but one in the Stars 1st XVIII. Emily is a foundation member of the Stars, playing in the 2018 Grand Final and an integral member of both the 2019 and 2022 premiership teams. We wish Emily all the best on reaching this milestone. 100
Mark Ramanathan (Glen Eira)
Congratulations ‘Rama’ on playing 100 VAFA games. The boy affectionately known as the ‘Flying Dumpling’ has played some terrific football for Glen Eira over the past decade. The 2016 Reserves Best & Fairest winner brings Packer Park to life with his loud voice and terrific foot skills off the half back flank. The utility doesn’t mind sneaking forward for a goal now and then either. All the best for your milestone game Mark, you’ve earned it!
Tom
St Bedes Mentone Tigers congratulates Tommy “TG” Garside who this week plays his 150th Senior Game against Old Geelong. Tommy has been a great player over many years for the Club playing in a variety of positions, mostly down back, but is not averse to going forward and kicking a couple of sneaky goals. Also, quiet, and not wanting to make any fuss, TG just goes about his job in an unobtrusive manner for the benefit of the Club and most of all his Teammates. A most popular personality. After a couple of years at Euroa where there is a great Family connection, he has come back into the Tigers fold and slotted in perfectly this year, as one of our more experienced players helping to guide our young group further up the Premier B Ladder. Tom has also represented the Big V on 5 occasions.

Caulfield prevail in a come-from-behind thriller
The last weekend of April was a stunner. As the sun was shining over a picturesque Melbourne, the clubs in Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s battled it out.
Three rounds in, we now have a formulated idea of who will challenge deep into the season, several teams have already put together strong and defiance performances. Though no team remains without a loss in U19 Premier Men’s, illustrating the centimetre-perfect competitiveness of this section.
De La Salle def by. Williamstown CYMS by 26 points.
The CYs haven’t quite had the start to the season they were hoping for. However, after two defeats, they regrouped and returned serve against De La on Saturday.
Williamstown possess good depth and had a strong showing throughout the preseason, don’t be surprised if this victory kick starts their season.
Whilst De La will be disappointed to have let this one slip from their grasp at home. They are now one of the 6 teams who are 2-1 thus far.
Sebastian Filipovic was amongst the best again for the losing side, accompanied by Patrick Russell and Mitchell Wain who combined for 7 majors. S. Shepherd, C. Vicino, J. Billington, C. Oldham, N. Singh & T. Assafiri were all individually superb for Williamstown.
Williamstown will host the Caulfield Grammarians during the prime-time slot at Fearon Reserve this week. Whilst De La Salle will travel to Camberwell to face Old Scotch
Caulfield Grammarians def. Old Xaverians by 1 point. This match had everything, both sides performed to a standard that was remarkable for U19 level.
Caulfield trailed for 95% of the game but were able to utilise their home ground advantage to seize a 1-point victory. Though they fell short, Xavier’s start to the season has been remarkable. The reigning premiers will look to regroup and bounce back next week.
Though this match certified that the Fields will fiercely challenge any opponent they face this year. Jack Atkinson and Max Olynyk were stand outs again for Caulfield, combining for 6 goals. Well and truly the match of the round.
Xavs will face St. Bernards at home in R4. Caulfield will trek over the bridge to face Williamstown.
St. Kevins defeated Old Brighton by 53 points.
SKOB will be fuelled by this performance. In what was a cohesive team showing, St. Kevins had the visitors on the ropes for majority of the contest.
Whereas Brighton’s start to the season has been rather lacklustre.
The 2022 grand finalist will need to reassess after this defeat. R. Agg, Z. Bowen, D. Gilbert, K. Dimattina, L. Travers & T. Howden were the best afield for the losing side.
Jasper Conquest slotted 6 for SKOB, his start to the season has been dominant.
St. Kevins will face Uni Blues this week in what will be a tight contest. Old Brighton will go up against SBMT, the latter are in strong form.
St. Bedes / Mentone Tigers def. Old Scotch by 13 points.
The young tigers are we and truly on the prowl in 2023. A 13-point victory at home will instil long-term confidence in this team going forward. SBMT were simply able to capitalise on their scoring opportunities more efficiently than the visitors.
Scotch had a tight win in RD1 but have struggled to secure a victory over the past fortnight.
They’ll look to recapture some form this weekend. Jack Behnk scored 3 majors, now sitting 6 clear in the section goal kicking tally. Whilst Harry Robenstone continued his strong start to the season, slotting 4 for Old Scotch.
SBMT will head up Beach Road to face Old Brighton in RD4. Old Scotch will take on De La Salle at home.
St. Bernards def by. University Blues by 58 points.
St. Bernards are now the only side in U19 Premier without a win in 2023. The Snow Dogs were a strong middle-table side last season, unfortunately we’re yet to see any signs of that team this year.
Though Uni have showed they are in for the fight this year. Their fitness and goal kicking prowess have been second to none thus far.
Daniel Gilham continued his strong form for St. Bernards with 3 majors. A. Bain, J. White, T. Ingram, J. McMahon, G. McCulloch & T. O’Brien were the best afield for the victors.
St. Bernards will travel to face Xavier, which may be a bleak affair. Whilst Uni will clash with St. Kevins.
