SEASON 2024 - May 4
VAFA Umpires to shine throughout Community Umpiring Round
May 3rd-5th of the VAFA season represents VAFA Community Umpiring Round. Umpires are the unsung heroes of Community Sport with over 450 VAFAUA umpires involved in the VAFA competition. VAFA Clubs are also supported by 100’s of Club umpires who take on the role of Field, Boundary and Goal umpires on a weekly basis.
This VAFA Community Umpiring Round represents a great opportunity for VAFA clubs and stakeholders to acknowledge the people that allow football to be played each week. Clubs can show their support of VAFA and Club Umpires by acknowledging their role on game day, shaking hands with umpires before and after games or inviting umpires into club rooms for a drink or meal after matches.
The Umpiring Department continues to invest in umpire recruitment/retention, female umpiring support initiatives and coaching. The coaching panel assembled includes many umpires with current or recent VFL experience, ensuring our umpires receive the highest level of coaching available to any community umpire.
Umpire training takes place at Elsternwick Park every Monday and Wednesday night throughout the season, you will see new umpires receiving expert on field skills training and taking part in video analysis. The VAFA has also established mutually beneficial partnerships with the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) and Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL). These programs ensure that junior umpires can progress through the development pathway and into the VAFA competition once they are ready to officiate senior football.
VFL Umpire Promotions- State League
As umpires are acknowledged during VAFA Community Umpiring Round, it’s important to recognise the Umpires who have recently been promoted to the VFL. The VAFA continues its reputation as the leading competition for umpiring talent, with half of the umpires promoted to the VFL in 2024 from the VAFA competition. Out of the eighteen umpires promoted, nine honed their craft within the
Stephen PriviteraUmpire Operations Managerranks of the VAFA. This statistic not only highlights the calibre of umpiring within the association but also serves as a testament to the rigorous training, dedication, and support provided to VAFA umpires.
Congratulations to the below umpires:
• Adam Bailes, Josh Hamilton, Jack Seymour – Field
• Mitch Bellingham, Asha Hinton, Finn Horan, Aidan McDonald – Boundary
• Katie Gillespie, Tim Wood – Goal
AFL Umpire Visits
Over the next two weeks, we will have some fantastic support from the AFL umpiring ranks. The VAFA umpiring group is grateful to the following AFL umpires who will visit Elsternwick Park for training on Wednesday night:
• Field- Andrew Heffernan
• Boundary- Michael Marantelli, Michael Saunders and Joshua Furman
• Goal- Steve Piperno
VAFA umpires in attendance will have the opportunity to be coached by current AFL umpires and hear about their journey to the top of the AFL.
The VAFA is focused on increasing umpire coverage levels across the competition.
Get Involved in Umpiring
The VAFA is focused on increasing umpire coverage levels across the competition. This round celebrates the contribution of umpires and seeks to encourage more people to consider umpiring. We need more umpires across all grades of football and there are opportunities to get involved for the remainder of this season. Umpiring offers an opportunity to stay involved in our competition, give back to our game, increase your fitness and get paid. Please visit vafa.com.au for further information on how to join VAFA umpiring.
I wish our umpires all the best for this VAFA Community Umpiring Round, enjoy your games and thank you for your ongoing commitment to our great competition.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
The Tonners on top in William Buck Premier Men’s
Round 3 of William Buck Premier Men’s left one team sitting undefeated at the top of the table, while the reigning premiers kickstarted their title defence with a crucial heart-stopping win.
OLD BRIGHTON remain the only undefeated team in Premier Men’s after a dominant second half saw them kick clear of OLD MELBURNIANS at Elsternwick Park .
The Tonners trailed by 8 points after conceding the opening goal of the second half, but they responded by unleashing a 7-goal burst to open up a match-winning lead.
Nick PAVLOU was amongst the goals once again, adding 4 to the 3 he slotted last week, while Sam LAUBE & Jackson PAINE booted 3 apiece for OMs.
Marcel BRUIN (Old Brighton): “That third quarter was probably our best quarter of footy so far this year. We moved the ball a little more purposefully which gave the forwards opportunity.
We maintained our pressure through the fourth with only one fit player on the bench, which was a really gritty effort. Our skipper Harry HILL was exceptional, while Max BENIER controlled our defence across half-back.”
PAUL SATTERLEY (Old Melburnians): “Once again we were very competitive for a half against a team chock-full of familiar quality players.
Our lapse in the third quarter cost us the game as they generated scoring shots from very gettable areas.
Whilst we can see marked improvement in our team, we need to sustain our effort for 4 quarters.”
COLLEGIANS are on the board in 2024 after holding off OLD SCOTCH in a thrilling SEN Match of the Day at Harry Trott Oval.
The traditional Anzac Round clash between the Lions and Cardinals was tight and tough all afternoon.
Scores were level at the half before the Cardinals got on top and threatened to break the game open. But the Collegians’ defence stood firm and despite Old Scotch’s dominance, Brodie EASTON slotted the only goal of the quarter to hand the Cardinals a 10-point 3-quarter time lead.
Then it was the Lions who finally opened the game up with some daring ball movement, booting the first 4 goals of the final term to open up a 15-point lead entering time-on.
But the Cardinals refused to yield - late goals to Jack LIPSCOMBE & Cooper LEAN dragging them back within 3 points before the final siren sounded, much to the relief of the Purple Army.
Jordie McKENZIE (Collegians): “Another tough arm wrestle, but the game opened up in the last quarter as we got back on top around the contest and gave our forwards some good looks with some deep entries.
Scotch kept coming and thanks to some big efforts from the backline, led by Scott BEILBY and Luke McCLEARY, we were able to hold on.
It was great to see debutants Will DEAN and Eddie KING impact the game, and for Ben DARROU to provide a strong target up forward in his first senior game in 3 years.”
Mark GNATT (Old Scotch): “A disappointing result but lots to like about where we are heading. We’re finding cohesion in our ball movement and our defensive structure is holding up well. Matt BENNETT is going from strength-to-strength.
Brodie EASTON & Ben HAYS are two of our leaders and both were outstanding. EASTON brought his own footy in the first half, while HAYS dominated his wing against a very talented opponent.
We had our chances to apply scoreboard pressure in the third quarter but didn’t capitalise. We need to tidy up our connection & conversion Inside 50. They are a quality team and found a way to get the result.”
ST BERNARDS handed ST KEVINS their first defeat of the season with an eye-catching performance at home.
The Snowdogs got away to a great start, kicking the first 3 goals of the game and led by a couple of kicks for the much of the opening half.
Three unanswered goals from midway through the third term saw them sneak out to a 22-point three-quarter time lead, followed by the first 2 goals of the final quarter which broke the game open.
The Snowdogs released the shackles to pile on 7 goals in the last term, sending a message to the rest of the competition with an impressive 52-point win.
Steve ALESSIO (St Bernards): “I was very pleased with the boys putting in our first 4-quarter performance this season.
Our players should get a lot of confidence from that, especially our younger brigade - including the likes of Nick DI LIZIO, Luke SAID, Luca ALESSIO, Caleb BURQUEST and Zac OVERMAN - who are all starting to show real maturity and leadership.”
Anthony LYNCH (St Kevins): “We were never really able to get our style of footy going for any period of the game.
St Bernard’s pressure and intensity was fantastic and they won far too many contests, which meant we could never generate momentum.
The highlight of the day was that we were able to debut two more Under 19 graduates.
I’ll be keen to see our group respond next week back at home.”
OLD XAVERIANS got a flyer at W.T Peterson Oval, booting the first 6 goals of the game to enjoy a relatively comfortable afternoon against FITZROY.
Xavs were at their punishing best in the first half, dominating most facets of the game to open up a commanding 47-point lead at the major break, before the Roys regrouped and rallied after half-time.
5 goals to 4 saw Fitzroy eat slightly into the hefty deficit, before banging on another 5 goals in the final term to restore some respectability to the scoreboard and some confidence to take into Round 4.
Dan DONATI (Old Xavs): “We started really strongly and put together a great first half, with plenty of looks due to our midfield being on top and defending really well. The second half was a different story and credit to Fitzroy for the way they worked their way back into the game.
In the end we managed to get an important 4 points away from home. Ben ANDREWS was among our best across half back, Ed DELANEY was prominent up forward, Dan TUDDENHAM and Shaun CROSS won plenty of inside ball and it was great to see young Mo KUCH kick a couple of important goals.”
Travis RONALDSON (Fitzroy): “We know our best footy is good enough. The challenge for our young group is to deliver it for a full four quarters each week.
Dane HARVEY was a real focal point up forward, kicking 5 goals, while Luke MINIHAN was influential for us in the midfield.”
The first UNIVERSITY DERBY of the season turned out to be a classic, with UNIVERSITY BLACKS coming from behind to score their first win.
UNIVERSITY BLUES started superbly, booting 6 straight in the opening term (4 in the final 15 minutes) to rocket out to a 28-point quarter-time lead.
But the Blacks found their mojo in the second quarter, kicking 5 goals to 2 to reduce the half-time deficit to 9 points.
The Blues peppered early in the third term, but 4 consecutive behinds would ultimately prove costly as Blacks kicked 3 goals in time-on to hit the front for the first time before the final change.
The last quarter teetered on a knife-edge with both teams having their chances. Scores were tied entering time-on before Ayui MAKIENG’s 4th goal at the 22-minute mark proved to be the winner - Blacks on the board with a thrilling 5-point victory.
Dale BOWER (Uni Blacks): “We were behind the 8-ball early, being 28 down at quarter time.
Our boys went to work at what they do best - applying pressure and competing. The second half was an even tussle, the game could have gone either way. So to get the win is great for our belief.
It was a true team effort and once again, I’m very proud of our young team.”
Guy MARTYN (Uni Blues): “We came out and played the type of footy we know we’re capable of. Our energy was up and there was a real buzz with the way we were playing.
Disappointingly, that’s where it stopped for us. Full credit to Uni Blacks, who out worked us for the remainder of the game.
This competition is so even - you just can’t afford to have flat periods throughout a game.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
Lauren AtkinsonThe more things change, the more they stay the same
At the conclusion of Round 3 in William Buck Premier Women’s, two teams remain undefeated, while two teams are yet to secure a win.
Caulfield Grammarians proved too strong for Collegians, coming out 16-point victors at Glen Huntly Oval.
It was evenly fought in the first half, with the two sides taking it in turns to kick the first four goals of the game. The third term was scrappy, with only a sprinkling of behinds added to the scoreboard, leaving Caulfield trailing by just a point at the last break.
With the game on the line, it was Caulfield who proved hungrier, storming home with three straight goals to steal the win. Sophie Highnam carried her team to victory, kicking two goals in the first ten minutes of the quarter to earn the lead for the Grammarians, with Chloe O’Malley subsequently kicking the sealer.
Kate McCarthy worked the wing with pace and experience all day, while Isla Mottram stood up in defence when it mattered most. Caulfield have had a compelling start to the season under the guidance of first-year coach, Danielle Distefano, showing they have the self-belief to get over the line in close encounters.
Over at TH King Oval, it was certainly a proud day for St Kevins who trumped Kew by 32-points in the Grand Final rematch. St Kevins dominated play in the first half, scoring 27 points to Kew’s single behind. It was only in the final term where Kew was able to match it with St Kevins, with both sides registering nine points.
Jessica Joyce and Zara Guss were standout for St Kevins, while Sarah Cameron had her best game of the season so far, finishing with three goals.
In a disappointing result for Kew, Dakota Villiva was the only goal scorer, while Catia Cococcia earned the top praise of the coaches.
For a second consecutive week, Old Scotch kept their opponent goalless, downing Coburg by 43 points at Camberwell Sportsground.
The Stars were able to consistently extend their lead, scoring two goals in each of the first three quarters, and another in the final term, whilst only conceding six points across the whole game.
There is no doubt that Old Scotch have a star-studded list of players, highlighted this week by the performances of a talented trio of VFLW-listed players in Annie Muir, Emma Robins and Bella Gray.
Although unable to see their brave efforts rewarded on the scoreboard, Chloe Perrett and Zoe Attard contributed significantly for Coburg.
The woes continued for Monash Blues, who lost to West Brunswick by 27 points. It was a one-sided affair at Frearson Oval, with Monash only hitting the scoreboard in the final term to take their final tally to two points.
West Brunswick had players impress across each line, with Taylah Watson winning the contested footy through the midfield, Ella Banfield acting as general of the backline and Brighdin Walsh leading the forwards with two goals.
One silver lining for Monash this season is the form of Alicia Myers, who has been a presence in each of their games so far. Chloe Gibson also deserves mention for her effort and endeavour throughout this week’s loss.
The final match of the round saw Old Yarra Cobras travel to Melbourne University Oval where they beat Melbourne University by 15 points, earning their first back-to-back win in the William Buck Premier competition.
The Cobras got off to a sizzling start, with Cecilia Baldassarre kicking a lovely snap goal within the first minute of play. Old Yarra continued to control the game in the first half, taking a 20-point lead into the half time break.
Again, Melbourne University conceded a goal in the opening minutes of the half, taking the margin out to 26 points. Credit to the home side, they took things up a notch after this wake-up call, reducing the deficit to 15 points by the final siren.
Victoria Holt was reliable as ever in defence for Melbourne University, with Georgia Nicholas also impressing for the home side with two majors.
For the Cobras, Eloise Newman and Alyssa Bernardo played important roles in their side’s triumph, while Cecilia Baldassarre found herself busy in front of goals again, bagging three majors.
Round 4 looks set to shape the ladder, with a fixture full of exciting contests.
Caulfield will host St Kevins in the round opener, with both teams coming off convincing wins in Round 3. Though Caulfield have had a decent start to the year with two wins already under their belt, St Kevins are a different beast, and it will require Caulfield to take things up a level if they want to compete.
Meanwhile, Kew will be looking to bounce back from their Round 3 loss, but they don’t come up against an easy target in Old Scotch, who will be looking to continue their undefeated streak.
The next match up will see Collegians host Old Yarra Cobras at Harry Trott Oval. After making finals last year, Collegians have not got off to the start they would have hoped for and will be looking to make things right against the competition newcomers.
West Brunswick and Coburg will battle it out to get an important second win on the board, with West Brunswick perhaps having an extra bit of fire in their belly after losing two tight contests with Coburg in 2023.
Finally, bottom two sides Monash Blues and Melbourne University will meet for the clash of the universities, with both teams still searching for their first win of the year. Which team will be the first to get the four points?

Paddy GrindlayTight finishes aplenty in Premier B Men’s
Old Trinity and De La Salle have perhaps played the match of the year in Round 3, stunning the competition with a Saturday afternoon thriller that went to the final kick of the game. Trailing by 33 points at three quarter time and with vice-captain Fraser Cameron out of the game after an early head clash, Nick Hyland’s team came out inspired, piling on seven goals in fourteen minutes to hit the front at Waverley Oval. It was a deluge that Donald McDonald’s Old Trinity couldn’t seem to halt, De La’s midfield unit dominating from centre bounce after struggling to assert itself through the middle of the game.
“As much as it was disappointing that they tipped in what they did, full credit to our (defenders) - they could’ve kicked ten (goals) in that last quarter,” McDonald said on Sunday.
From there it was goal-for-goal, Trinity’s Tom Ferrier kicking truly from a free kick to put the visitors in front at the 30-minute mark. But De La Salle forced the ball forward, and in the dying seconds, Trent Shannon was taken high in the right forward pocket and given the opportunity to win the game for the home side after the siren from a tough angle.
Shannon’s right-foot drop punt drifted to the left hand side for a behind however, Old Trinity holding on to win 16.8 (104) to 15.11 (101). Had Shannon’s shot sailed through, it would’ve been De La Salle’s ninth goal of the final quarter, after only seven goals to three quarter time.
Coach Nick Hyland told VAFA Media on Monday a win “would have felt like a bit of a robbery” considering Old Trinity’s dominance through the middle portion of the contest. Hyland noted a “proactive and physical” midfield unit focused on forcing the ball forward at all costs helped De La mightily in the final quarter, but wants to move on from the heart-wrenching result quickly. “We can’t dwell on that - we had plenty of other opportunities to win the game.”
For Old Trinity, defensive trio George Belcher, Lachie Mulcahy and Louis Davidson were outstanding, while Adrian Indovino (five goals) and Nathan Scollo (four) led De La Salle’s scoring.
It was a similarly tight and tense contest between Caulfield Grammarians and Old Geelong - Caulfield forwards coach Jono Nash taking the coaching reins with Guy McKenna away and subsequently treated to a nailbiter, broken open late by the Grammarians for a 12.15 (87) to 11.11 (77) win at Glen Huntly Park. The home side got away cleanly in a first half highlighted by clean disposal and an outrageous goal from midfielder Pat Bannister in the second term. Bannister broke through a stoppage at left half back, taking a bounce before launching a kick forward from behind the centre circles that carried his high-pressing forwards.
Coach Guy McKenna during his game review on Monday afternoon was as shocked as anyone to watch the football roll through for a goal, giving the Grammarians a 21-point lead. Old Geelong came storming back, booting six goals to two in the third term to take a three-point lead at the final break.
Coach Nathan Brown lauded the performances of midfielder Sam Barnett and ruck Tim Breadmore, who were able to create opportunities for outside run. Breadmore, filling in for typical first ruck Jack Sheridan, was one of a host of inclusions for Old Geelong.
Caulfield’s Jono Moren and Old Geelong’s Mickey Nicholls traded a goal apiece to start the final term, before a stalemate that continued well into time-on ensued - neither side able to break through for a major with the Grammarians trailing by under a goal. But it was Caulfield who broke the goal drought - Dylan Ting snapped out of a stoppage to put his side in front at the 27-minute mark of the final quarter, before a mighty Moren blow shortly afterwards from outside 50 put the Grammarians clear by nine points. “It’s the land of the giants down there,” said coach Guy McKenna.
Archie Loughnan, Jasper Rouget, Hugh Sandilands and Josh Hutchings make for a formidable foursome up forward - Rouget booted three goals from just five kicks, while Loughnan was unable to reap the rewards of his dominance, booting 2.5. Julian Dobosz didn’t feature - but Caulfied could easily present a forward line with five players standing 6’3” or taller should he return. Moren was Caulfield’s best - “a bull by name and a bull by nature,” said McKenna, with Caulfield banking an important win to move to 2-1. “We’re a work in progress - we’re still learning and finding out about ourselves,” McKenna said. “When the competition’s so close, (a close win) is like eight points.” Nathan Brown was proud of his side’s efforts in a close loss. “I thought it was a really good performance. It sets us up for something to build on,” he said.
In yet another Round 3 humdinger, a last-minute goal from Beaumaris’ Will Skinner gave the Sharks their second win of the season, completing a second-half turnaround over Old Camberwell to win 11.10 (76) to 10.11 (71). Trailing by one point, Damien Johns hauled down an opponent on the wing to win the ball back for the Sharks, kicking the footy into the corridor where Callum Lineham escaped into space. Lineham’s long punt to the goal square found a well-positioned Skinner, who leapt backwards to take a strong overhead mark and converted the resulting set shot from 10 metres out.
Old Camberwell won a free kick in the centre at play’s resumption, but the final siren sounded as James Allen’s kick went inside 50. Beaumaris coach Josh Bourke was elated with the win after his squad kicked six goals to Old Camberwell’s two after half time. “In my 10 years as a coach, I haven’t seen a team this buoyant after a win,” he said on Sunday.
Callum Heath starred in the ruck and worked forward to kick three goals, while defender Riley Mihailovic overcame a tight hamstring to be “terrific” through the middle. Heath, brother of St Kilda ruck Max, has been one of Beaumaris’ best in the opening rounds of the season. “Cal’s probably capable of playing some really good VFL footy,” Josh Bourke said.
For Old Camberwell, Harry Veitch was manful in the middle, while Josh Gale and Patrick Blew held down their wing positions superbly.
“We’ve got to get back quickly,” said coach Anson Brownless. “You can’t drop your heads at all in this grade.”
Daniel Ward’s Old Haileybury side won its first game of the season, running out 126-point winners over Williamstown CYMS in Caulfield South. Tom Antonis was exciting on debut, while on-baller Hugo Nosiara and ruck Jack Bell waxed nicely at stoppage. The home side had to make do with limited rotations, down to two on the bench early in the second term, one on the bench in the third, and finally to no bench at all in the final quarter. “The 18-19 that played most of the game without a rest did a great job,” said coach Daniel Ward Harrison Jones booted seven goals for Old Haileybury while Sam Loewe added five of his own. For Williamstown CYMS, coach Con Terzoglou highlighted a younger group of players including Harry Miller, Zayne Galea, Dean Cutajar, Cooper Brown and Zach Provest who will enjoy opportunities at senior level. Of his side’s 0-3 start to 2023, Terzoglou says his team needs to find its rhythm. “We’ve just got some early season challenges right now that we need to work through,” he said.
A “wound-up” Old Ivanhoe captured the eye on Saturday, Jarrod Gieschen’s men leaping to an early 31-point lead and cruising to a 16.12 (108) to 6.10 (46) defeat of St Bedes / Mentone at Chelsworth Park. In Luke Scuderi’s 100th game, the home squad came out firing, having kicked nine goals to two at half time with Billy Murphy and Toby McLean on top in the middle.
Defender Reed Jepson had his hands full with Tigers forward Jack Behnk but kept the spearhead to two goals, while Max Whiteman booted four majors on return from having his appendix out. Zac Calvez and Josh Cowan continued their solid starts for St Bedes / Mentone. This week looms as a key contest for Old Ivanhoe as they pay a visit to Old Trinity - the only 3-0 side in Premier B. “(They) seem to be one of the benchmark teams,” said coach Jarrod Gieschen, his side rising from Premier C last year to an early-season top-of-the-table clash in Premier B in 12 months.
St Bedes / Mentone will host Old Haileybury, Caulfied Grammarians will head out to Beaumaris, Old Geelong will look for its second win of the season against Camberwell while De La Salle will pay a visit to Williamstown CYMS.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S
Kylie LynchOld Geelong prove they are a force to be reckoned with this season
Round 3 was a fiercely contested one in Premier B Women’s, with some fairly disparate score lines, showcasing the strength of some teams as they continue to find their groove and strengthen their on-field chemistry.
Old Geelong and Williamstown CYMS continue to assert their authority in Prem B, with both teams holding onto their undefeated titles for another week. If they keep their undefeated streak this week, the impending Round 5 will prove to be a spectacle, where both teams will meet to dethrone each other.
In an impressive display of skill and dominance, Old Geelong delivered a resounding victory over Aquinas OC with a staggering 108-0 scoreline. Their relentless attack saw them slotting an impressive total of 15 goals.
Old Geelong coach Jack Crameri said it was “a great all-round performance and it was really hard to cast votes on the day.”
“We set little goals each quarter on how we wanted the quarters to pan out and achieved all of those goals in the end,” said Crameri.
He believes the highlights of Old Geelong’s game were the functionality of their forward line and turning inside 50s into scores, as well as our handball game in and around contests.
“Our sides depth really shone through with some tremendous performances from the girls who came into the side.”
Matilda Arthur emerged as the standout player of the game, showcasing her prowess with an outstanding tally of 6 goals and being voted best on ground for Old Geelong.
It certainly wasn’t a one-woman show, however, as a total of 8 players contributed to the goal-scoring spree, highlighting Old Geelong’s goalkicking skill across the board.
Aquinas did put up a noble fight, especially in the third quarter where Old Geelong kicked 7 behinds, showcasing Aquinas’ defensive pressure.
Fitzroy asserted their dominance over Mazenod with a 59-8 victory. Fitzroy coach Nathan Jumeau was impressed with his team’s efforts, especially as the side starts to gel on the field after the loss of some key players last season.
“The team is just starting to get up and going. We had a lot of our senior players retire last year, and this group is still figuring out how to play with each other,” said Jumeau.
Fitzroy newcomer Ester Boles led the charge by slotting 3 goals and earning her place amongst the best on ground for her side. Chloe Haritopoulos also made her mark with 2 crucial goals, further bolstering Fitzroy’s offensive prowess.
Coach Jumeau said that Georgina Bennett was an asset to the team, “playing a strong game both offensively and defensively throughout the whole game.”
Despite the loss, Mazenod’s defence held firm for much of the match. Their resilience was especially evident in their ability to keep Fitzroy goalless in the third quarter, despite conceding 6 behinds, proving their strong defensive pressure. Ella Camerotto managed to break Mazenod’s drought in the final quarter with a much-needed goal.
In a dominant display of skill and strategy, St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers asserted their authority over Beaumaris, securing an 80-11 victory.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers coach Al Gailey was pleased with his team’s win, saying the team was due for a better performance as the new players start to gel. “Over a third of the team is new, so it’s taken a while to know who’s who and get that connection between the lines.”
The win was a testament to the Tigers’ offensive and defensive ability, having a blistering 4 goal start and closing the final quarter out with 5 goals. Noteworthy was Isabella Gietzmann’s stellar performance, bagging an impressive 4 goals and earning recognition as the secondbest player on the field for her side.
Gailey said the addition of some former VFLW players to the team, along with some other recruits, has freed up key players like Madeleine Tilley from the ruck, which has provided the team with more versatility.
Beaumaris converted a lone goal in the opening quarter before being held scoreless for the remainder of the match.
“We prepared for their run and carry out wide footy and were able to negate that,” says Gailey.
Williamstown CYMS showcased their skill against Old Westbourne in an impressive 58-13 victory. Trusty goalkicker Alessia Acquaro kicked 2 goals, helping steer her team to success.
Despite a spirited effort, Westbourne struggled to find their footing throughout the match, with moments of brilliance from Hannah McMahon and Manaia Huta in the second quarter scoring a goal each.
Williamstown’s relentless pressure and clinical execution proved too much for their opponents, securing a comprehensive win and reaffirming their undefeated status in the Women’s Prem B 2024 season.
As Round 4 of the VAFA Women’s Prem B approaches, anticipation brews for a thrilling line-up of matches. Undefeated stalwarts Old Geelong gear up to clash with Westbourne, who are raring to climb the ranks.
Meanwhile, Aquinas will be ready to use this round’s large defeat and home-ground advantage to fuel their hunger for a win as they face off against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.
Fitzroy braces for a challenging encounter against Beaumaris, with each team vying to climb on the ladder.
Lastly, Williamstown CYMS square off against Mazenod OC to try and keep their undefeated streak. But will they hold onto it?

Not much left on the table as big wins in abundance in Premier C
The numbers have been crunched as Round 3 saw a big average winning margin of 67 points in Premier C. Hampton Rovers, Old Carey and the Parkdale Vultures did not leave much on the table as they thrashed their oppositions and boosted their percentages.
The Hampton Rovers continued their unbeaten start with a big away win to the Monash Blues. Both teams performed well in the first quarter, with Monash kicking the first three goals followed by Hampton kicking the next three.
The Rovers turned a 2-point quarter time lead into a 22-point lead at half time, and only got more dominant as the game went on, finishing with a 67 point victory and sitting in a dominant spot on top of the ladder in Premier C. William Crawford and Jamie Delaney each kicked three goals for Hampton.
Mazenod had a day to forget, going down to Old Carey by 121 points at the Carey Sports Complex. Both teams were unbeaten prior to this game and no doubt were aware that the winner would send a strong statement to the rest of Premier C.
Ultimately, Old Carey overwhelmingly exceeded in this task, dominating at all stages of the day. If not for some inaccuracy from Old Carey, the scoreboard may have read much worse for Mazenod. Riley Thompson continued his positive start to the season, kicking five goals for Old Carey, whilst Mazenod’s Jarryd Raffa stood up for his team in tough circumstances, contributing two goals.
AJAX recorded their third-straight victory of the season, defeating PEGS by 26 points. The Jackas brilliant first-quarter meant it was always going to be hard for PEGS to catch them, and despite three goals to PEGS at the start of the second quarter to tighten the margin, AJAX continued to apply pressure and in particular had an explosive third quarter.
Jack Fenner kept his strong form going with three goals for PEGS, whilst Justin Vogel, Dov Paltiel were best on for AJAX, and Richie Simon starred with five goals. This win sees Ajax only 1.52% out of first position as they look to cement their place up the top of the ladder of their new grade, whilst PEGS sit in sixth spot with the one win to their name.
The Parkdale Vultures recorded another mighty win, claiming the four points against Oakleigh with a 100-point victory. Whilst Oakleigh started well with a quick goal, Parkdale responded in blitzing style, kicking the next six majors, and by the time half-time came around, the Vultures had worked up a mammoth 64-point lead.
Unfortunately for Oakleigh, things went from bad to worse as Parkdale recorded nine goals in the second half whilst Oakleigh only managed another four. Lloyd Bailey impressed with five goals for the Vultures. Oakleigh will enter Round 4 yet to win a game since being promoted to Premier C, whilst Parkdale sit in third, albeit with the strongest percentage of all teams.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon defeated Marcellin by 22 points in what was their first win since being promoted to Premier C in a tight contest at Packer Park. Marcellin started with a bang, scoring five unanswered goals in the first quarter, three of those going to Adam Tomaro.
Something needed to change for Glen Eira, and they immediately responded, reducing the deficit to just 11-points at half-time. With such a small margin separating the two teams, Glen Eira figured that this was their opportunity to keep the momentum going and claim their first win of 2024, in front of their home crowd. The Gryphons lead by 1-point at three-quarter time and managed to retain and extend that lead throughout the final term, in what was a much needed victory to get them on the board with their first win.
Round 4 should create some breathing space on the ladder with two teams remaining undefeated, and two teams yet to register a win.
Kicking off the weekend, AJAX host Glen Eira/Old McKinnon at Princes Park in Caulfield. Whilst this game might not seem overly enticing on paper, it is early days and Glen Eira will be looking to replicate some of their fantastic form from Division 1 last season to challenge one of the best sides in Premier C.
PEGS make the trip to Bulleen to play Old Carey. A win for PEGS will see them edging closer to the top four.
Mazenod play host to the undefeated Hampton Rovers at Central Reserve. After a tough loss in Round 3, Mazenod will need to lift against this well built side.
Elsewhere, Oakleigh host Monash Blues at Scammell Reserve which will see one team record their first win of the season, and Parkdale Vultures will come up against Marcellin which should be a competitive game.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Elsternwick’s quiet achiever plays his 300th Congratulations to Elsternwick’s SHANE CONVERY, who runs out for his 300 th game for the Wicks this weekend! Shane debuted in 2006 and finally got his hands on a premiership cup when he skippered Elsternwick to the Reserves flag last season.
The Convery family have built an incredible legacy at the club, starting with Shane’s Dad Mick, who played 240 games and was Club President. Shane’s siblings Peter, Jimmy, Dave and Steph have all pulled on the red & black and will be on hand to celebrate his magnificent achievement, as will Shane’s 6-weekold daughter Matilda, who will be attending her first game!
Shane’s 300th game will be telecast as part of our VAFA live-stream double-header - Elsternwick vs South Melbourne Districts from 11.35am Saturday at VAFA.com.au
The VAFA currently has the largest Women’s Senior Community Football competition in Australia, with the on-field competition going from strength to strength with 74 teams in 2024 and approximately 2,500 participants taking the field. The contribution of Women off the field is also going from strength to strength with a variety of senior leadership roles within VAFA clubs being held by Women.
Recently 9 Women representing a variety of VAFA clubs were accepted into the highly competitive Lead Your Way Leadership Program. This AFL Victoria and AFL National initiative aims to progress the skills and network of women and gender diverse
leaders across a series of development and networking events in 2024. Hot Air Balloon holds up VAFA game
Hampton Rovers’ under-19 team had an unusual pre-game warm-up on Saturday, forced to carry a hot-air balloon off the ground so their match against Uni Blacks could commence.
“Hopefully that’s the strangest thing I ever get a team to do”
coach Paul Carrigan told the Herald Sun. The balloon parked right in the middle of Crawford Oval in Carlton just before the VAFA Division 1 match was due to kick off on Saturday morning. Unbelievably, it was left to the players themselves to clear the basket and packed-away balloon off the ground.
Chadstone returns to Senior Football
After 7 long years in the VAFA Men’s Thirds competition, Chadstone Football Club has returned to the VAFA Men’s Divisional competition in 2024.
A key element of the return to Senior football was the appointment of Luke Nally as Senior Coach. “We had a huge recruitment drive and the new faces around the place are a breath of fresh air and have reinvigorated the group who have stuck fat with the club through the dark times. Round 1 brought 22 debutants which is unprecedented for this club, we used to struggle to get that many at training” said Nally.
The committee and playing group at Jordan Reserve is now as solid as it has been for a long time and the club has ambitious plans to grow. This includes entering a Men’s thirds side and Women’s team while also ensuring their facilities are up to standard with a new electronic scoreboard high on the priority list. The results on the field have been mixed for Chadstone so far but their off-field success has set them up for a strong future in the VAFA for years to come.

The VAFA was pleased to launch the VAFA Female Umpire Academy on Wednesday 17th April at Elsternwick Park. Umpires participated in skills drills and had the opportunity to hear from AFLW umpire Maddy Lum. Maddy shared her experiences in reaching the elite record with our VAFA umpires, this was inspiring and motivating for VAFA’s up and coming female umpires. All in attendance were presented with the new academy shirt as the VAFA looks to support the recruitment and retention of female umpires in the competition.

Olivia McGie (Williamstown CYMS)Women’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Olivia McGie from Williamstown CYMS who has been nominated as the Round 3 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Olivia debuted with Williamstown CYMS in Round 1 and has featured in the best players for consecutive weeks, kicking her first goal this round.
What the Club said:
Olivia joined the CY’s in 2024 following two seasons with the Murray Bushrangers U18s in the Coates League talent pathway. Olivia made the leap to Senior footy in the VAFA, determined to elevate her game to new heights.
Juggling the demands of high school, Olivia travels over an hour each way to and from training from her home town of Broadford, showcasing her dedication and passion for footy. Olivia’s professionalism belies her age, quietly setting a standard to training and improving her game that immediately earned her the respect of her new teammates, and the moniker as the “Pocket Rocket”.
On the field, Olivia is quickly becoming known for her elite running ability, she brings speed and intensity to the contest, is a ferocious tackler, has sharp kicking skills and a knack of getting in dangerous positions in forward 50.
Coach, Lawrence Henry said, “Olivia’s game across half forward on Saturday was exceptional. Westbourne have a strong rebounding game from half back, Liv’s forward defensive pressure and tackling really shut that down and created scoring opportunities for her teammates. Her ability to also find space, take a couple of big, contested marks and kick accurately complimented her tenacity at the contest with real class ball in hand.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Will Drummond (Ormond)
The VAFA congratulates Will Drummond from Ormond AFC, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 3. Will dominated Round 3 with a 6 goal haul and was named best on ground.
What the club said:
Will played the first game of 2024 in the Under 19’s and quickly progressed to the senior 18 the following week.
Will had a breakout game in Round 3 when he kicked 6 goals in only his third game of senior football. Will was selected to play at full forward with an occasional run on the ball. This enabled Will to showcase his full array of skills.
Ormond head Coach Kyle Pinto said, “Since arriving at the club this year we knew we had landed something special, a quiet young man off the field but a competitive beast on it. Will has instantly won the respect of his teammates and coaches with his ability to win the ball all around the ground and his contested marking forward of the ball. Will is a future captain of the club and we can’t wait to watch his development continue.”

DIVISION 1 MEN’S
Liam ColeOrmond on the board as Devils get stronger
Finding the Premiership fancy in the division 1 men’s competition is a difficult challenge in the 2024 season. A mixture of close encounters and dominant results prove the competition is wide open for the taking.
The Parkside Devils continue to get stronger this season after an impressive 27-point win over Prahran away. Parkside were on from the get go, leading by four goals in the first term after Prahran struggled to connect inside 50. The engine room of Benedict Douglas, Micheal Romano and Corey Mckay proved too good as Prahran remained scoreless in the first half. Two goals in a minute got Parkside away to a flyer in the second term thanks to some great forward pressure by Mitch Lawson and Ciaran Cotter.
Meanwhile, it was a 50 metre penalty given to James Musster which gave Prahran their first major in the third term as their midfield lifted. Two goals to none gave some belief for Prahran going into the last quarter trailing by only 24 points. It wasn’t to be for them as Parkside’s Luciano Logozzo and Max Balassone took some big intercept marks in the last term to ruin the party.
UHS-VU found a way to get over the line against a hungry Old Yarra Cobras side. It was a scrap for the first three quarters with ruckman James Fleming and midfielder Nicholas Zappala having great games in the midfield for the Cobras. UHS-VU led the whole game but couldn’t quite connect inside 50 to what they would have liked.
Seven points separated the two sides in the last quarter but with four quick consecutive goals for UHSVU the game was put to bed. Sam McSweeney was superb across half-forward applying great pressure around the ball whilst Tom Rocke was a standout in defence.
Ormond proved too strong against Therry Penola defeating the emerging side by 107 points to record their first win under new coach Kyle Pinto. It was a handy day out for 18-year-old Will Drummond who starred up forward for Ormond alongside teammate James Tsakonas who both kicked six goals, as well as Aidan Soria with four.
The domination in contested ball and the heat applied around the ground was too hot for the Lions to handle. Ormond owned the territory battle in the last term resulting in the side scoring 10 goals to one.
Meanwhile, it was not an ideal start for Old Peninsula as key player Jake Williams was concussed in the warm up after getting hit by a ball. The Preston Bullants defeated the Old Peninsula by 69 points as the Pirates continued to struggle with injury this season. The Bullants’ execution was a highlight as the side kicked 20.9 in front of goal.
The midfield battle was even between the two sides all day but Preston’s ferocity around the ball and elite ball movement overwhelmed the opposition’s highly rated defence. Sean Calcedo excelled in the midfield again as he continued his superb start to the season.
The best game of the round was no doubt the Kew’s win over a gallant West Brunswick side by three points. Kew showed their scoring power as the Bears were off to a flyer helped by Ned Waters who kicked three goals and William Liewelyn having another day out with four goals. William Llewelyn has 11 goals already to his name this season and is the leading goal scorer so far.
With only a 21-point deficit beginning the last term, the Magpies were hungry for their first taste of victory this year. You could tell Kew were just hanging on in the final minutes of the game and the composure from the likes of Jack Delbridge and Max Poletti helped them hold on.
Round 4 entails some games which could be one sided and on the other hand be must-win opportunities for two sides who are looking for their first win of the season.
West Brunswick will no doubt take a lot of positives out of their close loss to the Bears, as they take on Prahran. Prahran will be looking to lift their defensive work rate and their efficiency going inside 50 at Ransford Oval.
Old Peninsula will be looking to get their second win on the board as they take on the undefeated Kew at home. The Bears will be looking to have a four quarter performance after falling away in the last term.
Parkside are facing the young Therry Penola as the Devils look to push into the top 4. The Lions defence will have a huge challenge ahead of them. Parkside talls Jack Hamilton and Brody Smith are threatening to become a strong duo in the forward line this season.
The Old Yarra Cobras who were extremely competitive against UHS-VU have another big task ahead of them as they go up against Ormond. The evidence from round three suggests the battle in the midfield and the importance of composure under pressure will decide who prevails here.
The game of the round this week is the Preston Bullants who are improving each week coming up against the prelim finalists of last year UHS-VU. Tom Hill’s Bullants side are looking for two in a row while UHS-VU are setting their sights on top spot.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S
Annie IrelandMarcellin and Old Brighton remain undefeated to set up massive Round Four
Marcellin and Old Brighton have cemented their position as the heavyweights in the competition, flexing their muscles again this week with big wins to remain as the two undefeated teams. However, only one side will remain undefeated post-Round 4 as the two go head-to-head, whilst Brunswick are still searching for their first win of the season.
Old Haileybury would’ve hoped to recover from a tough one-point loss last weekend, although it wasn’t to be against Marcellin, suffering a 32-point loss. It was an even contest in the first half, Haileybury kicking 3.3. to Marcellin’s 6.4 at the main break and still looked to be in with a sniff for the rest of the game.
However, a strong second half from Marcellin showed why they are such a threat this year. Whilst they only kicked 2.7 for the remainder of the game, their defence managed to keep Haileybury scoreless for the entire second half showing that they have a well-rounded game style- playing well offensively in the first half and defending their lead in the second half.
Co-captains Bridget Hanrahan and Isabella Scaunich were both strong for Haileybury, whilst Zoe Glascott was a clear best on ground once again, kicking five of Marcellin’s eight goals.
Next up, Marcellin will travel to Brighton Oval to take on Old Brighton in the match of the round, with the winner to remain as the only undefeated team in the comp. On the other side of town, Old Haileybury goes to Gillon Oval to play the winless Brunswick in what should be a victory for Haileybury.
Old Brighton and the Parkdale Vultures were both coming off 100+ point victories in Round 2 where they impressively both kept their opponents scoreless; this was an indicator for a competitive matchup between two sides who are not shy in front of goals.
Old Brighton was the better side on the day coming away with a 43-point victory. Like other games this weekend, the first half was an even contest- 1.2 to 3.4 at the main change.
However, Old Brighton just proved too strong, kicking another four goals after half time, holding Parkdale scoreless, and to just eight points for the game. Similar to Marcellin, the Tonners showed why they can be such a dominant team this season as they have a strong offensive and defensive style of play and can power away to win games when it matters.
Whilst there was not much to celebrate for the Vultures on the scoreboard, Shaedyn Aylen was their best player after kicking their only goal for the day, continuing her stellar form after her nomination for the Anytime Fitness Rising Star the weekend prior in Round 2.
India and Jasmine Tait starred once again for Brighton, whilst Lily Tait scored a goal. Caterina O’Brien demonstrated why she is one of the co-captains for this year, kicking three goals for the game.
Parkdale currently sit fourth on the ladder, their strong percentage from a big win in Round Two helping them to clear the pack of teams all on four points. However, if they really want to cement themselves within the top four, they need to look towards a return to form when they host Old Melburnians next weekend.
For Brighton, it’s the headline clash against fellow premiership cup favourites Marcellin at Brighton Beach Oval.
Old Melburnians suffered a second consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of Old Xaverians by 21 points. It was promising signs for Old Melburnians in the first half who went into the main break with a one-goal lead.
However, after half time Old Xavs came out to play, kicking another four goals for the match and as we have seen in other games this weekend, keeping the opposition scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Clare Fraser was best on for Old Melburnians with a goal to her name, whilst Jess Gough and Emma Chamberlain were also impressive. For Xavs, Maggie Gaffney was one of their best with a three-goal haul, and Mel Clarke was also equally impressive.
Old Camberwell also registered their first win for the season, with a strong showing against the winless Brunswick. A three-goal second quarter from Camberwell set up the rest of the game, taking a lead into the second half that Brunswick were unable to overcome.
Inaccuracy also got the better of Brunswick, finishing with 2.7 for the game. This proved even more costly given their opposition was kicking straight for the game.
Isabella Griffin was arguably best on ground, with a four-goal haul to seal victory for her team, whilst captain Justine Gabriel was also impressive. Emma Mactaggart and captain Clare Woodhouse were the best for Brunswick.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S
Jainarayan TiwariBrunswick’s unstoppable streak in Division 2 Men’s
Significant victories across the board in Division 2 Men’s in Round 3 have sparked interest and shaken up the competition.
Brunswick continued their winning momentum as they outplayed Wattle Park, defeating them by 89 points at Gillion Oval. Brunswick displayed a dominant performance, trouncing the Animals with a resounding 127 to 38 victory. Brunswick’s indefatigable Hayden Parker showcased his class by kicking nine goals for the game. For Wattle Park, Daniel Hill contributed two goals to aid his team’s efforts.
In a nail-biting Round 3 clash, Hawthorn narrowly clinched a win by three points over South Melbourne Districts, defeating the Swans 103-100. The match’s outcome hung in the balance until Cooper Rule’s clutch goal in the dying minutes sealed Hawthorn’s triumph. The Hawthorn coach, Mark Murray, expressed relief, praising South Melbourne as a formidable opponent and commending Rule’s decisive finish. Carl Stewart of South Melbourne had earlier intensified the suspense with a pivotal goal, but Rule’s subsequent score dashed their hopes. After a previous round setback against the powerhouse Brunswick team, Hawthorn’s resurgence was a testament to their grit, handing South Melbourne their first loss of the season. Meanwhile, South Melbourne coach Nick Abbott said, “Hawthorn handled key moments in the match better than us, and we will make sure we learn from the loss. We didn’t play our best footy, but they took advantage.”
In another thrilling Division 2 encounter at Whitefriars College Oval, Elsternwick emerged victorious over Whitefriars by 22 points. The game was neck and neck early, with just one point in it at quarter time. Momentum built for Elsternwick by half time as they surged to a 36 point lead. The third quarter witnessed a determined Whitefriars as they kicked three majors, but still trailed by 22 points at the final change. The
fourth term sealed Elsternwick’s dominance, kicking three goals to two to win by 22 points. Elsternwick’s Daniel Marchese, alongside vice-captain Spencer Hankin, combined eight goals. Meanwhile, from Whitefriars, James Perrin banged three goals, but that wasn’t enough to get the side across the victory. Next up, Elsternwick will host their old rivals, South Melbourne, in round four next week in a match which will be live streamed on VAFA.com.au.
At Ted Ajani Reserve, Bulleen Templestowe defeated St Marys Salesian with a 69-49 win in a compelling Division 2 match. The game unfolded with the Bullants setting a robust tone, leading 24-2 after the first quarter. They doubled their advantage by halftime, leading by 35 points, showcasing their dominance. Despite a spirited effort, St Mary couldn’t close the gap in the third quarter. The final quarter saw St Marys Salesian kick three goals, but it was too little too late, as they went down by 20 points. Bulleen Templestowe’s Corey Shiels booted five goals for the game, and St Marys’ Trent Ryan’s three-goal feat was a highlight, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide against the Bullants.
MHSOB unleashed a dominant display, outscoring the hosts Aquinas with a final score of 99 to 52. MHSOB’s electrifying start set the tone early, as they blitzed through the first quarter with a formidable five goals to none. Their relentless assault continued, amassing a 51-point lead by the main break, with Aquinas’s kicking one goal six. Aquinas attempted a valiant fightback in the third term, with a four goal quarter, but it was a little late to make a comeback. The final siren sounded with MHSOB capping off a masterclass in attacking footy, defeating Aquinas by 47 points. MHSOB’s Mathew Pereira bagged five goals, and Will Hellier’s kicked three.
As we charge into Round 4 of the season, the stakes soar with Brunswick leading the pack, prepping for a blockbuster clash with the formidable MHSOB on their home turf at Melbourne High School. Both teams are in stellar form. St Mary’s Salesian is hungry for their first win of the season and will lock horns with Aquinas, who are equally eager to bounce back from their last defeat.
Bulleen Templestowe will face Hawthorn, which will be a massive challenge. Meanwhile, Wattle Park, who lost their last game by a significant margin, will play Whitefriars at Bennettswood Reserve. Rounding out the round’s matches is the epic rivalry that’ll light up Holmes/Todd Oval, where Elsternwick hosts South Melbourne Districts in what’s expected to be an electrifying game.

Huge wins across the board boost percentage in Div 3
Triple figure wins were the theme of Round 3, as clubs bolstered their ladder positions with some handy percentage increases. As Division 3 Men’s takes shape, teams are taking no time to rid the off-season rust.
The first game of the round was a classic, with North Brunswick surging in the last to triumph over Canterbury by seven points. The Bulls never led at any of the breaks, even held to just 18 points at half time. However, as a side still yet to be defeated since 2022, the Bulls have winning ingrained in their DNA. They took the lead halfway through the fourth quarter and managed to hold on in classic North Brunswick fashion.
The Cobras now fall to 1-2 after this gut-wrenching loss, and sit sixth on the ladder. Mitch Szabo was strong again for Canterbury, joining Nathan Beacom and Darby Desmond in the best.
Three goals from ruckman Simon Woodward aided North Brunswick’s comeback, as Cameron Lee, Andrew Lewis Poppa and Fletcher Banfield made up the Bulls’ best. The Bulls take on Swinburne University next week in a prime opportunity to go 4-0.
In the largest win of the Round, Power House remain unbeaten following a 144-point drubbing of Chadstone. A ten goal second term broke the game wide open for Power House, leading by 70 at halftime. The Synners were unable to reel in the margin, as Power House scored a monstrous 203 points.
Power House’s Michael Timmons bagged eight goals, whilst Luke Stubbs (6) and Benjamin Circosta (5) combined for a further 11.
Chadstone’s Anthony Brown was best on for his side, kicking four of the Synners’ nine goals. Caleb Rudd, Logan Stott, Bethel Loh, Braiden Leong, and Daniel Marquison round out Chadstone’s best.
Returning from the bye, La Trobe University cruised past Eley Park by 133 points. Keeping the Sharks scoreless in the first term, La Trobe utilised their home ground advantage with flowing ball movement. The floodgates opened in the last, with La Trobe kicking ten goals to one.
It was a team effort, with ten players kicking majors, eight of which kicked multiple. Hugo O’Callaghan was best on for La Trobe, amongst Archie Conboy and Darcy Thorn.
Fresh faces filled the best for Eley Park, including firstyear Sharks Jack Johnstone, Daniel Kaye, Matt Gallagher, and Nicholas Nillson. Eley Park are back at Shark Park next week when they play St John’s.
Swinburne University rebounded from last week’s loss, toughing out a gritty 26-point win over Box Hill North. The Razorbacks were down at quarter-time, but found their footing throughout the rest of the match, outrunning the Demons.
It was an important match to win for Swinburne, placing them in the top four with a solid percentage. Nick Ferguson kicked five, whilst Bradley Field and Thomas Hartney were best on for the Razorbacks.
Box Hill North remain winless in 2024, but coach Jeff D’Amato notes a large injury list is causing some of their struggles. Blake Williams kicked an impressive four goals, making him best on ground for the Demons, along with Aaron D’Amato, Joshua Hocking and Carl Sieger. They play La Trobe next week, with hopes to beat the other collegiate side this time around.
In what was a highly anticipated preliminary final rematch, St John’s exacted their revenge on Albert Park in a crushing 123-point win. The JOC’s kept Albert Park scoreless in the first quarter, opening with a commanding 45-point lead. They would never look back, mounting on 22 goals to boost their ladder percentage to 226.5%.
St. John’s currently sit third, and with only one tight loss to the undefeated North Brunswick, they are primed for a deep finals run this season. Timothy Werner kicked 11 goals in the best Division 3 goalkicking performance yet, landing himself in the best with Callum Houghton.
Joshua Rennie, Bryce Agiss and Alby Evans were the Falcons best men, however they’ll be looking onto next week’s matchup against Chadstone. It could provide a confidence boost for the club that had started their season so strongly.
Looking onto Round 4, every game has plenty at stake.
Canterbury need to beat Richmond Central to avoid chasing the pack at 1-3, whilst the Snakes are coming off a bye, refreshed and ready to win. Canterbury’s two losses have been by just seven points each, so don’t let their current ladder position fool you. This game will be a tight one.
North Brunswick will host Swinburne University at home as they aim to continue their unbeaten streak. Swinburne are playing with quality currently, and upsetting the Bulls will prove they are genuine flag contenders this year.
Box Hill North face La Trobe University in an intriguing matchup. La Trobe’s opening two games tell two opposite tales, whilst the Demons have competed well despite being winless. It’s anyone’s guess who takes the four points.
Eley Park will try rebound against St John’s this weekend. St John’s have been an impressive outfit so far, but the Sharks are formidable at home.
Chadstone host Albert Park to close out the round, with both sides coming off huge defeats. The Falcons have the opportunity to regain some form after two weeks of struggle, but Chadstone also have the same chance to pounce on the battling Falcons. It will be a do-or-die match at Jordan Reserve.
Power House have the bye this weekend.

HOLMESGLEN ’S REPORT
Joel KennedyANZAC tributes flow as Old Scotch and St Kevins storm home
It was an important weekend of football in Holmesglen Under 19 Men’s Premier, with all games paying respect to the ANZAC week tradition.
The opening contest of the Saturday schedule saw the unbeaten Old Brighton facing De La Salle at Waverly Oval. Jonah Campigli again led from the front for Brighton, slotting four majors and assisting heavily to the 79-point-win.
Cooper Dowe and Luke Travers continued their form down forward whilst Mason Szonyi, Sam Litis and Oliver Goodger were also impressive. Marvin Elliott, Joel Tyquin, and Jonah Zitzen flew the flag for the opposition in the heavy defeat.
After the tough result, the De La Salle boys have fallen to four losses, with no wins, and sit at the bottom of the league ladder. Despite the disappointing start, they hold many talented prospects who will look to swing the ledger. De La Salle continue their season next week when they face Caulfield Grammarians at Glen Huntly Park.
Later in the day, Old Scotch edged out Beaumaris in an entertaining matchup at Banksia reserve. After trailing for the entirety of the day, Old Scotch rallied, kicking six goals to nothing in the final term to run away with the 32-point victory.
Sam Norman concluded the game with four majors for the winners, whilst Will Hucker, Connor Ferguson, Henry Long, Aiden Brien and Preston Johnson also put in solid performances.
For Beaumaris, the result was disappointing, yet encouraging. Angus Bowd continued his stellar form, whilst Mitchell Davidson, Aiden McCarthy, Thomas Federici, Jacob Whitehouse and Ned Bodi were also imposing.
University Blues dominated their matchup against Williamstown CYMS at Crawford Oval, coming away 89-point winners. Ash Spencer and
Edmund Wallis spearheaded the victory, kicking three goals each. Leading at every break, Max Diffey, Grant Walker, Johnny Pring and Oliver Williams were amongst the best, and provided some incredible highlights.
For Williamstown, Levi Cossey, jack wheeler, Liam Taylor provided some positive moments.
The final game of Saturday saw St Kevins pitted against old rivals St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. A tight contest from the outset, St Kevins entered the final break with a measly one-point lead. It was Liam Edwards who stood up, leading his side to a final quarter domination. St Kevins would run away 21-point winners, an impressive performance indeed.
It was Sebastian Duffy, George Delimitrou, Xavier Duke, oscar white and Ben Cantwell who also helped immensely in the victory. For the opposition St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, Bennett Martin, Thomas Aughterson and Liam Bowles impressed.
In the final game of the round, Sunday’s contest between Caulfield Grammarians and Old Xaverians was tantalising for all who made the trip to Glen Huntly Park. It would be the Old Xaverians who would claim the win, overcoming a brave opposition by 27 points.
For the victors, Harry Bird, Tom Scalzo, Thomas Gorman, Tommy Trist, Xavier Austin and Ed Dalton put in strong performances, whilst Jack Iverson, Bailey Mullen, James Hill, and Luca Trumble impressed for Caulfield.

50
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Congratulations to Lauren on reaching 50 games for Power House! Lauren has been instrumental for our defence, and her exceptional speed is a key asset to our team’s success. Keep up the outstanding work!
Steph Conlon (Power House)
Congratulations to Steph on reaching 50 games for Power House! Steph, who was a member of the inaugural team, continues to demonstrate her incredible strength by bulldozing through players on the field. Her presence is a huge asset to the team.
Hayley Carter (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
Congratulations to Hayley Carter on playing 50 games. A member of the inaugural 2019 Senior Women’s team and a Division 4 Premiership player, Hayley is an absolute dynamo. Whether she’s providing run off half back or winning the football with sheer tenacity through the midfield, Hayley is a quality player who we look forward to seeing light up Packer Park for many years to come. 50
Harry May (Marcellin)
Congratulations to Harry May who will play his 50th game this weekend. Harry joined the club in 2021, where he established himself as a quality young player who was adaptable in playing numerous different positions throughout the ground. He transitioned into senior football in 2023, where he was a fantastic player in the Thirds midfield as well as being rewarded with a place in the Reserves team to finish out the year. We look forward to many more games from Harry with the Eagles!
Daniel Young (Albert Park)
50
Congratulations to Dan Young on his 50 th game this weekend! Dan joined the club in 2019 and has been a ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ in the backline ever since, to date playing 37 senior games and 12 in the reserves. Dan’s leadership was a driving factor in the side’s 2023 campaign, helping drive the Falcons to the 2023 Division 4 Grand Final. We’re very proud of our Kiwi Falcon and look forward to celebrating with him over the weekend. Congratulations Dan!
Tim Barnett (Albert Park)
100
The Albert Park Falcons would like to congratulate club stalwart Tim Barnett on achieving his 100-game milestone this weekend! Tim has been a mainstay of the Falcons side since joining in 2016 and has held various supporting roles at the club across this time. A highlight of Tim’s time at the club is no doubt the 2022 Division 4 Reserves premiership win, as well as his numerous beer pong titles. The silky-smooth left footer (and better looking version of Jason Statham) is well loved at the Falcons for his team first attitude both on and off the field, and is a great example to all younger players at the club. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement Tim!
