Kirsten Pilatti – CEO, Breast Cancer Network Australia

our information forums in a digital format with over 11,000 views. It’s because of support like yours that we can continue to be here for everyone, at every stage of their breast cancer journey.

Thank you to everyone for getting behind Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and our ‘Play4BCNA Pink Sports Day’ round over Mother’s Day weekend. We can’t wait to see the sea of pink down at each club as the teams run out onto the ground!

Anyone who has been part of a PLAY4BCNA round before will know how much fun it is to come together, pull on your pink socks, dye your hair pink and paint your ground pink to support those around you diagnosed and living with breast cancer.

Being told you have breast cancer changes your life in an instant. It also changes the lives of those around you – families, friends, workplaces, sporting clubs, schools and local communities. Your participation this weekend will not only show support to the families in your club and community affected by breast cancer, but it will also raise important funds to help BCNA continue our work.

Being told you have breast cancer changes your life in an instant.

BCNA provides information and support to those diagnosed and their supporters, opportunities to connect with others going through a similar situation and works to influence a stronger healthcare system to ensure all Australians affected by breast cancer receive the very best care, treatment and support.

Every year we are blown away by how many people come down to support the ‘PLAY4BCNA Pink Sports Day’ round and I’m looking forward to getting around to as many clubs as possible to join in the day. We wish you all the best this weekend. Have fun as you ‘pink up’ to PLAY4BCNA!

For any clubs that can’t participate this weekend, we welcome you to hold your event any weekend that suits you!

With over 20,000 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer every year, our services have never been more important with most of the 40,000 people diagnosed over the past two years having the added emotional burden of going through treatment alone.

And don’t forget that if you or someone you know is diagnosed with breast cancer you can call our Helpline on 1800 500 258. We’re here, every step. To get involved or donate head to https:// pinksportsday.bcna.org.au/my-fundraising/449/ vafa

Over that time, our Helpline has taken over 20,000 calls and we have successfully been able to deliver

All scripts are set to be re-written, expect the unexpected this weekend Jaryd Cachia will miss for SKOB, Shaun Kennedy is in a race against time after an ankle injury last weekend. Waiting in the wings who Plugger Lynch can call upon are Callum Jones and Paddy Kerr. The confi dence in the forward line is sky-high after Jack Darmody earned the round 4 rising star nomination with four goals against Collegians.

Without fail, once a week, in a passing conversation, someone will make mention of another great show they’ve been bingewatching on Netflix, or a thriller movie they caught on Stan, some will even tell you how good MAFS, Masterchef, the Voice and Lego Masters is. I personally am not sure why they bother, there’s only one thing worth watching - the footy.

Sam Critchley vs. Dave Mirra was highlighted as the round 4 match-up to watch, after his fi ve goals on the weekend, Sam Critchley vs. Alex Polidoris will be a fascinating duel. If the T’s can move the ball quickly through the St Kevin’s 18-man press ‘Poli’ may be able to get Sam on the lead, but of-course beating a full ground press is easier said than done.

And without fail, every week, the best sport in the world has the ability to capture the hearts, minds and imagination (thanks Brett Kirk) of every single footy fan. For the first four Saturday’s of the William Buck Premier season, we have been treated to some of the best unscripted reality you can get.

Old Xaverians (1-3) and Collegians (3-1) have surprised many for various reasons across the opening four rounds. You would have been hard-pressed for even the best script-writers to have picked this as a start to 2022.

The most recent round has shown once again the evenness of the competition, any of the top-flight teams on any given Saturday can have the opposition’s measure, so much so that 50% of games so far in William Buck Premier have been decided by 13 points or less.

The Xav’s mafi a have turned their fortunes around in recent years from tougher positions than this but they’ll want to get a move on and not allow the early part of the season to get away from them. The Purple Army on the other hand have ticked almost every box they’ve been confronted with.

You only need to look back to the weekend as Old Trinity caused a stir to claim their first win of the season over University Blues, Caulfi eld Grammarians are also on the board in 2022 further underlining the statement above.

Jared Rivers won’t be resting on his laurels with a final quarter fadeout and will be asking the troops of the Trott to push hard for the full four quarters. If they’re in the contest in the final term, you can assume the mind games and recent run of close finishes to the last few weeks may creep in for Old Xaverians.

The Fields started 2021 in exactly the same fashion, round 4 was the moment the season got rolling, are they going to be following a similar script in 2022? Old Brighton are disappointed with their first blemish of the year against Old Scotch, and will be keen to get back on the winners list at home. The forecast plays into the hands of the Tonners and if they’re able to keep Will Lewis in their forward line they’ll have a focal point to kick too.

While we can highlight players of Dave Mirra, Aaron Vandenberg, Will Hams and Viv Michie’s ilk in this contest, I’m going to put forward the suggestion that we may see mark of the year come from this game, Scott Bielby at Collegians or Charlie MacIsaac at Old Xav’s, both boys have springs in their feet and have a license to fl y. As it stands, they’re chasing Nick Hodgson of Old Scotch who is the clubhouse leader in this category.

Caulfi eld has discovered another level to Isaac Morrisby (6 goals in 3 weeks), working in tandem with Julian Dobosz up forward. The Fields will come into the contest with confi dence after beating Old Xav’s and in their most recent clash with their arch-rivals they came away with the win after losing six in a row to the Tonners.

Speaking of Old Scotch, they head out to a ground that all opposition clubs despise, the Snakepit at St Bernard’s. The head-to-head battle against the Snowdogs is all-square (6-6 from their last 12), although recent history leans towards the Cardinals who have won the last 3.

We have been treated to classics in the RSN Carnival match of the day this year, this is sure to be another one of those afternoons out bayside.

Two key names will be missing for the respective sides with Charlie Vague out of the St Bernard’s midfi eld and Jack Polkinghorne out of the Old Scotch line-up. Tom Ansell is available for selection which adds another layer to Mark Gnatt’s cavalry, a win away from Camberwell Sports Park keeps Old Scotch ahead of the chasing pack and knocking on the door of the top four.

Despite St Kevin’s having the wood over Old Trinity (Won the last 8) the T’s caused the boilover of the weekend, holding out University Blues; it’s a big challenge against the ladder leaders on Saturday at the Daley Oval. However, you can never discount what spirit can be spurred on from such a win, after all this piece is about the scripts being flipped. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

St Bernard’s have battled to kick above 50 points in a game this season, just once from four games have they surpassed the half-century while Old Scotch have been unable to keep opposition clubs to below 80 points per game. What we’ve seen from both sides in the games they have won, if they’re able to get on a Melbourne Demons style of momentum-swing, they’re almost impossible to stop. The final game (or episode, if you’re still on the TV script theme) is potentially the one with the biggest consequences for the loser out at Melbourne University. Uni Blues have to get the points, or will be staring down the barrel at a 1-4 start to the season while OM’s have the chance to move to 4-1 which will be the clubs best start to a season since 2009 in Premier B (Going onto win the Premiership that season). The avenues to goal for Blues have dried up in the past fortnight (9 goals & 8 goals), OM’s are averaging 24 shots at goal in their past 3 weeks with Al Armstrong, Sam Dunnell and Cam Banfi eld all hitting the scoreboard regularly. Ayce Cordy comes up against Nick De Steiger in the ruck while Cam O’Shea and Gus Borthwick do battle once it hits the ground. Ed Ziebarth and Ed Nicholls for their respective sides provide the next wave of talent coming through both of these sides. Uni Blues will be hoping the next episode to this challenge doesn’t follow the most recent outing against OM’s which saw them go down by 72 points of the final game in the abandoned season of 2021. The bottom fi ve sides are separated only by percentage proving the season is as wide open as it’s been for a while. Whatever you do this weekend, make sure you’re watching the footy, expect the unexpected, all bets are off, rewrite the scripts because you won’t want to miss this.

De La Salle break their drought in their battle for the Bernie Sheehy Cup It was business as usual for Old Haileybury as they headed down to Fearon Reserve to face Williamstown. The consistency and resolve from Durras Seccull and Jack Lonie were on display once again, proving too strong for Williamstown’s defence. Haileybury ran away with the game after halftime as Kye Turner and Brede Seccull forced the game to be played on their terms. For CY, Oskar Manton showed exceptional diligence in the forward line securing him 2 goals while youngster Liam Conway verified himself as a key strength through the midfield. Old Haileybury have no time to waste heading into round 5 as the Tigers are hungry for another win, whilst CY look forward to their match against The Jackers.

With round four coming a close, the divide between the top and the bottom has begun to grow. De La secured themselves the Bernie Sheehy cup and their first win of the season in their triumph over AJAX, meanwhile, Old Carey are yet to earn themselves a victory conceding an 83-point loss against St Bedes Mentone. Old Haileybury tick off another win over Williamstown and Uni Blacks continue their reign as they defeat Beaumaris by 74 points. Waverley oval set the stage for the battle for the Bernie Sheehy cup between De La Salle and AJAX. De La began the game on their terms heading into the quarter time break with a healthy 24-point lead. The Jackers worked hard to close this gap with Charles Hamilton giving his all and stellar performances from Jack Lew and Kane Nissenbaum both kicking 3 goals. In the end, the might of Trent Shannon and Jake Williams awarded De La the four points. The energy at the Dairy Bell was electric as midfield asset Hugh Nicholson put on a show for his 150th game, a result new coach Nick Hyland couldn’t be happier with. Next week Da La hosts Old Carey as AJAX host Williamstown down at Gary Smorgon Oval.

University Blacks are the team to beat in 2022 as they record an impressive victory over Beaumaris. Matthew Grocott and Jesse Hare were among the best for the Uni Blacks showing grit and determination around the ground. Despite the unflattering scoreline for the Sharks, Callum Heath and Jordan Evans were unwavering in their pursuit of the ball, putting their body on the line to grapple the game in their favour at any chance. This fight between second and third has highlighted the synergy created on and off the field by the Blackers as they remain undefeated. Beaumaris will utilise the bye round to regroup their troops meanwhile the Uni Blacks take on the Roys.

In the clash of the cats, St Bedes Mentone shuffled up to third spot on the ladder after defeating Old Carey down at Brindisi oval. Outstanding midfield pressure from the Tigers coupled with exceptional forward line accuracy from Matthew Caia and Brayden O’Toole, both securing 5 goals each, saw St Bedes lead from the beginning. Jonathan Marsh put up a good fight in the middle alongside Will Mitchell however the Panthers couldn’t convert this hunger into points on the board. St Bedes Mentone are provided with another ladder jumping opportunity as they face a strong opponent in Old Haileybury. Meanwhile, Old Carey looks forward to a bottom of the table clash against De La. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

A challenge is thrown down as a young contender emerges Hampton Rovers are showing that they are serious players in the race for the 2022 Premier C crown. Elsewhere the highly fancied Ormond dropped their second game running, while Old Mentonians came out in front in the southern derby. Here’s what took place…

Christian Hatzis kicked fi ve for Old Geelong with Bailey Austin and Ben Webb excellent. Harrison Reid was Ivanhoe’s only multiple goalkicker with two, with Sam Wilcox also among the best. Marcellin travelled to E.E. Gunn Reserve and prevailed in a high quality encounter where the margin (21 points) did not tell the story of the evenness of the two teams. From the outset Marcellin showed that they had come to play, consistently being first to the ground balls early on and matching Ormond in the air.

It was a long day for a young Preston Bullants squad missing a number of their most influential players going down by 123 points. These lads are as game as they come, but on this day they were no match for a Mazenod side looking to frank their finals credentials and send a message to the rest of the competition that they will be a major threat in 2022.

The first quarter was a bit of a stalemate on the scoreboard, with only one goal kicked by each side, and the tightness continued with Marcellin leading by three points at half time and four at the last change.

Mazenod were harried into inaccuracy early when the Bullants were at their freshest, kicking seven minor scores in each of the first two quarters, but as the match continued the Nodders became more and more dominant, to the point that they had a tally of 11.19 turning for home.

Marcellin broke it open in the final term, kicking fi ve goals to two as Ormond’s accuracy deserted them in front of goal. Mason Martinez and Jack Mason starred for Ormond but Liam Atherton, Sebastian Beale and Matt Capetola were not to let Marcellin be denied a strong victory.

Preston kicked two of their three goals in the final term, but Mazenod kicked nine of their own to salute in emphatic fashion. Jack Caspersz continued his consistent start with four goals for the third match running, and Tom McKenna also starred for Mazenod. Rory Howard and Matt Maiolo toiled hard all day for Preston.

The slick Hampton Rovers side threw down the gauntlet by putting the previously unbeaten Monash Blues to the sword in a big way on their own patch. The first quarter was an even affair but the Rovers took all their chances, kicking three goals without a blemish to go to the first break nine points to the good.

Old Geelong got their season rolling, taking the four points away from Chelsworth Park with a comfortable 40 point victory. The Geelong boys laid the foundation by kicking the only four goals of the first term and although Old Ivanhoe fought hard to keep the score at a respectable level, they could make no impression on the scoreboard.

Hampton broke the game open in the second term, kicking fi ve goals to one to establish a six goal break on which Monash were never able to make an impression. Monash showed the trait that good sides have, not lying down as they kicked seven goals after half time, but Hampton continued to make the most of their chances to add 12.3, winning by 63 points.

Old Ivanhoe could have been closer than 23 points down at half time but a tally of 2.6 didn’t do them any favours. Old Geelong kicked fi ve goals to four in the third term, and then fi ve goals to three in the last to emphasise the point that on their day Old Ivanhoe can match this side, but this one belonged to the Geelong lads.

Danny Corp kicked six goals for the victors, for whom captain Christian Carnovale led the way brilliantly. James Flett carried the flag for Monash, as did Nick Darling with four goals. Old Mentonians turned around an early deficit against Parkdale Vultures to score a gutsy eight point win in the southern suburbs battle. It was the Vultures that looked the stronger in the early exchanges, kicking three goals to one in the opening stanza and maintaining a ten point advantage at the long break. There were only seven goals kicked in a first half where the defences held sway, but Old Mentonians won the game in the third term by kicking six goals to one. That gave them a 21 point break at the home turn and while Parkdale kicked three of the four last quarter goals, they fell eight points short at the final siren. Angus Grant led the way on the scoreboard for Old Mentonians, with team leaders Josh Gorman, Darcy Brown and Lachlan Mirams standing up when it mattered. Jack Love and Sam Sargeant worked their backsides off for Parkdale, with Liam Purcell kicking three goals. UHS-VU bye

History at Parkside with 5 from 5 for first time! Parkside Football Club won five games for the first time in its history on Saturday. The club has managed to field 5 sides off the back of the growth in the junior club which was established around 15 years ago. There are a number of players from that first tackers side who are in the early mid 20’s playing in the seniors now. The 19’s were introduced more recently and last year, the club was able to field a 3rds and most significantly the senior women’s side which has generated such a positive vibe around the club and only enhanced the welcoming and inclusive environment it looks to provide.

Big upgrade for Canterbury’s facilities The Canterbury Cobras have announced a $1m funding upgrade to rebuild the facilities at its Canterbury Sports Ground base. Currently, the pavilion and surrounds are subject to flooding and don’t provide a suitable area for spectators to enjoy the action during football and cricket games. Surrey Hills and Canterbury communities will benefit from the upgrades, with the new multipurpose venue doubling as a community hub to be utilised by local groups.

FTLOTG congratulates Albert Park’s Dearne Kinsella & Tyson Cattle on the safe arrival of the Falcon’s newest and youngest fan! Miss Bailee holds her own special piece of history, being the very first child to have both parents play football at the club.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Paige Trajkovski (Kew) The VAFA congratulates Paige Trajkovski from Kew who is the round 4 Anytime Fitness Rising Star nominee. Paige made her senior debut with the Bears as Kew accounted for West Brunswick by 25 points on the weekend. What the club said: Recently off her grand final win for the NAB League, Paige has continued her on-field football achievements receiving a Round 4 VAFA Rising Star nomination. The poised and hard running forward caught the eye of many in her debut for the Kew Bears, walking away with plenty of the ball and a well-executed set shot goal. She has superb skills and a fierce attack on the ball. Paige is hoping to continue refining her craft against the bigger bodies of Senior Women’s football in attempts to play at the highest level she possibly can. The Club hopes it can continue to be a pathway for up and coming aspiring female players.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee Jack Darmody (St Kevin’s) The VAFA congratulates the fourth Men’s Rising Star nominee of 2022 – Jack Darmody from St Kevin’s, Jack was influential in SKOB’s 21 point win over Collegians, kicking 4 goals in a scintillating performance. What the club said: Jack is a former St Kevin’s College student who unfortunately was part of the 2020 Year 12 group who missed their final school football year. Jack captained the SKOB under 19’s in 2021 and also made his senior debut in Round 14 of that year against Old Brighton, which turned out to be the final game of the season. Jack’s pre-season form had everyone at the club excited and in his first four games of 2022 he certainly hasn’t let anyone down. He is one of a young group performing very well at Senior level and that gives us great hope for the short and long term future. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Importantly, Jack is a great young man off the field and thoroughly deserving of the Rising Star. The whole SKOB community is very proud of this accolade. 12

Even the Mighty can fall… Round 4 of the VAFA left absolutely nothing to the imagination, if you are reading along and following along with the tips for the round, I have found you an absolute diamond in the rough for a winner, as the Division 1 men continue to chop and change who may be the best team in the competition…

Whitefriars finally got to celebrate a victory last week after a rocky start to their 2022 campaign, and coming up against a team who is thereabouts in Prahran Assumption it was sure to be a great test for them, and that’s what it proved to be. Coming into the half with just 3 points to their name would have been a moment they wanted to forget, and in the end not even a 9 goal second half could get back the lead they afforded Prahran, allowing them to run out winners by 21 points.

Let’s kick things off with the biggest win of the weekend. Glen Eira took care of business at home against a struggling St Mary’s Salesians outfi t. Getting off to a flier with 51 points in the first quarter, the control of the game began and stayed within reach of the Gryphons, boasting not only 171 points – but also spreading this across 10 different players.

For fans of Prahran Assumption they walk away from it knowing you can suffocate teams to the point of being goalless, however a lack of ability to really expose a team may linger for them – for Whitefriards its now a reflection on how these games seem to keep slipping away and leaving us all with questions, how do they fi x it?

This team has only had one black mark through these first month, and since moving up from the Division 2 ranks have proved they not only belong, but they are ready to take a run at claiming the crown come season’s end. For St Mary’s, it’s another chance to reassess and re-evaluate what they need to change in order to stay competitive in these games.

Moving our attention again to one of the top teams in Division 1, Kew took on an inconsistent Old Peninsula in what was, from the gun, a very one sided affair.

Now this one is good. I want to say that this is “the diamond in the rough” win for PEGS, but as they sit 4-0 at the top of the table I need to change my language to “this was a statement” against Old Camberwell.

Third-placed Kew took it right to the Peninsula men who gave up 35 scoring shots to a side that is known in this division to take a lead and run with it.

Once again out in the elements at PEGS Sporting fields, this PEGS team was able to mitigate the scoring damage usually caused by the former top of the table Wellers, keeping them to their lowest score of the year at 26 points.

Needing to bounce back from a loss last week the Bears stamped their authority as a side that is going to have a deep run into the later parts of the year. For Peninsula, I feel like this is a theme I mention week in week out, it’s now a time to really assess and change their backline structure or even personnel in defence as what they’re doing isn’t quite stacking up to the standard of these top tier Division 1 teams.

PEGS are getting it done at both ends of the ground with complete efficiency and ease, and with a percentage of over 220% it’s hard to see a team toppling this team any time soon. Old Camberwell doesn’t need to panic from a loss like this given the caliber of team they are, but it’s absolutely one that they cant have a short memory over.

The final game of the round ended up probably taking the cake as the best. The contest came between the men from Oakleigh and the bottom of the table, Therry Penola.

This was the game I was most interested in leading to the weekend, and it certainly didn’t disappoint between Prahran Assumption and Whitefriars.

Winless through the first 3 rounds, I mentioned last week this is a team who will accept their best outcome for the year is to steal a game or two and avoid being at the bottom come year’s end, this week almost became one of the great thefts of the season. Not only getting the jump in the first quarter, Therry sustained a lead over the Krushers into the fourth quarter, sadly losing steam into the final stages and being overpowered by an Oakleigh team that is probably the most improved side of the Division this season. In the end Oakleigh ran away with a huge last quarter effort of 7 goals to none, moving them to 3-1 for the year and again being a fringe side knocking on the door of toppling a division they were purely making the numbers up in last year.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

Crushing wins, maiden victories and a come-from-behind classic Saturday in Division 2 saw teams come with an early rush to set up big victories, others came back to earth with a thud while for one side Round 4 gave them their first win of the season.

There’s a genuine opportunity coming this weekend as they host Yarra Old Grammarians at Ross Gregory Oval with both sides gunning for their first win of the year.

At the top of the tree sit Brunswick, the only undefeated side remaining after an impressive 40 point win over Old Parade. Despite the inaccuracy in front of the sticks, Aaron Christensen found his way to fi ve goals taking his season tally to 11 after the first month.

Yarra Old were held to one goal for three quarters against Manningham Cobras as they picked up their first set of 4 points in 2022 with a 33 point win. A total of 10.25 were kicked by both sides in the contest with Anthony Raso, Ethan Brandon-Jones and Michael Muller all kicking two goals each for the Cobras.

Rhyen Woods would be high up in the early votes for the club best and fairest after another best on ground performance while for the Paradians Anthony Cafari added three majors to his season tally of 10 as Ross Licciardi battled manfully all afternoon.

After a couple of heavy losses in Round’s one and two, they’ve fought on in the last fortnight and found some reward for effort. Will they continue their form as they travel out to Aquinas this weekend?

The impressive start to the year from Brunswick sees them averaging 122 points per game while only conceding 43.5 points per game, has them well on their way to stay within the top two all year with those numbers.

Aquinas started the year in a blaze of glory but were taught a football lesson from MHSOB, a 33 point quarter time lead extended to 59 by half time with the final margin finishing at 90 points. Ashan Wijayakumara is back to his goalkicking best with six majors in the contest, which places him third on the sharpshooters list. Lachie Dowling helped the cause with four goals of his own as Steven Edmonds ran rampant in a best on ground display.

Speaking of top two, Division 2 this weekend will get an early taste of finals as they face off against second placed Ivanhoe AFC while Old Parade welcome West Brunswick to Garvey Oval. On the Hoers, they made light work of Power House with 8 goals to 1 in the opening term. The margin extended beyond 100 points as the game unfolded as they finished with 39 scoring shots to 12.

Jacob Costello followed up his two goals last week for Aquinas with another three in front of the sticks. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if they come away learning more about themselves from those four quarters and a completely different looking team come the return bout later this year.

A plethora of goalkickers came from Ivanhoe, James Course the top goalscorer with four. Three goals went the way of Wayne Schultz, Nicholas Ring, Billy Drake and James Lagreca. For Power House, it’s been a lean start to 2022, Jeremy Hill has been a shining light being named in the best for the third consecutive week after a two goal performance.

At 2-2 for Bulleen, they’ve been around the mark in every game so far and will be ruing this as one that got away. It’s a far cry from where they’ve come from 12 months ago, the next fortnight against Brunswick and MHSOB gives them a great opportunity to throw caution to the wind and get a gauge on just how far they’ve come against two of the strongest teams in Division 2.

Bulls bullish, Bloods still right at home in Div 3 Men’s Division 3 Men’s is heating up, which is nice given the weather seems to have finally decided to start cooling down. Round four was much of the same, though Emmaus St Leo’s suffered arguably their first upset loss of the season.

Warriors kicking two goals in the first term to be within a chance, the Snakes kicked away in the second quarter, adding fi ve majors from 13 scoring shots to be up by 61 points at the main break. Jack Bilson kicked fi ve for Richmond Central, while Justin Perillo (4), Jordan Miller (4), Tait Forster (2), and Stephen Dodd (2) all rode shotgun, with the latter named as best-on. For the away side, Benjamin Hodge kicked two goals to be his side’s best player, and Ali Eqbal (2) was the only other multiple goalscorer.

Despite their bye, Elsternwick still sit on top of the ladder as the only team to be three from three, while Hawthorn have still yet to register their first win of the season. There was quite an upset at Allard Park as North Brunswick took it up to Emmaus St Leo’s and came away with a 5-point win. The Bulls were in front early, limiting the away side to just one behind in the first quarter, before the Animals finally got the party started in the second, kicking fi ve goals to take a 12-point buffer into the main break. The half-time celebrations were stifled by a North Brunswick outfi t putting on a gutsy show to hold on at the final siren, much to the delight of the Bulls crowd that had congregated. It was the Hillshow for Emmaus St Leo’s as Matt and Dan (no relation) kicked two goals each, while Sam Barrah was named best-on. For the home side, Matthew David (3) was the only multiple goalscorer, while Kali Dawborn (1) took top honours.

South Melbourne Districts have added another win to their tally in 2022, beating Canterbury by 32 points at Canterbury Sportsground. It was all Bloods all day, kicking fi ve goals in the first quarter to take a buffer into the break. Despite the ball spending some time in the Cobras’ forward 50, they were unable to capitalise as the away side ran away with it. Oliver Dufficy continued his goalkicking ways, getting on the board with fi ve of his own while Leigh Sfetkidis (2) played a guest starring role, and Jack Cotton was named best on. For Canterbury, John Nicolopoulos kicked two goals to be his side’s only multiple goalscorer, and Josh Ward was their best. For the ladies luncheon weekend at Bennettswood Reserve, Emmaus St Leo’s will host a Westbourne Grammarians side intent on getting a win on the board. Round four was a rough one for the Animals and they’ll look to rebound quickly to get back on the winner’s list.

The year is going from bad to worse for Hawthorn, who travelled to Pitcher Park and were subsequently beaten by 44 points. The Hawks kept their noses in it all day but were unable to gain any momentum, with the Red Devils consistently piling on the pressure to stay ahead all day. There were nine individual goalkickers for the home side on the day, with Isaac Romano, Jack Hamilton, Jackson Hubbard and Lewis Balcombe all contributing two majors each, but it was Michael Romano who was best on. Charlie Lee (2) was Hawthorn’s only multiple goalscorer, and it was Samuel Quinlan (1) who was their best.

Holmes Todd Oval is the destination for 1 v 2 this weekend, as Elsternwick and Parkside face each other for more than bragging rights. The Wickers are fresh off the bye and will be hoping to go unbeaten after fi ve rounds, while a win for the Red Devils could see them take top spot on the ladder.

A ten-goal first half set up a thumping win for Richmond Central, who left Kevin Bartlett Reserve 107-point winners against a Westbourne Grammarians side unable to take a trick. Despite the

Two teams looking to continue their winning ways are South Melbourne Districts and North Brunswick, who will take each other on at Albert Park Oval 1. The Bulls come into the game still high on the adrenaline of an upset win in round four, while for the Bloods, it was business as usual against Canterbury. It’s snake v snake as Canterbury have their second home game in a row when they welcome Richmond Central to Canterbury Sportsground. The Cobras will be disappointed by their round four performance and look to bounce back quickly, while the Snakes are fresh off a thumping win. It’s Hawthorn’s turn for the bye this week, and it couldn’t be more timely. They’ll return for round six after what is sure to be a serious assessment of the season so far.

Swinburne and La Trobe remain on top whilst St Johns wins bragging rights over rivals The biggest rivalry in Division 4 took place at the home of the Tigers as Masala-Dandenong hosted St Johns in what was set to be the match of the week. For the first half of the match, the game lived up to expectations. A scrappy start and defensive mindsets saw both teams ending the first quarter with low scores as St Johns led 14-8. The second quarter saw the game open up as both teams went into attack kicking four goals each before the major break, with St Johns still retaining a seven point lead.

Eley Park knew they needed a strong start to the second half and they found another gear as the Sharks kicked the first four goals of the half to go ahead by fi ve points. The Razorbacks answered with another 2 goals to bring back the lead their way to go up by 4 points at the final break. Swinburne managed to extend this lead in the fourth running out winners by 21 points. The gap could’ve been much greater had the Razorbacks kicked straight with a scoreline of 12 goals and 20 behinds. Nicholas Coad continued his form kicking 5 goals for the game whilst Ben Field, Tom Johnston and Samuel Pentney kicked 3,3 and 2 goals respectively for the Sharks. Swinburne’s best included Zachary Lassey, Thomas Hartney and the previously mentioned Nicholas Coad. For the Sharks their best players were Luke Wakeling, Shannon Blewitt and Ben Field.

In the second half, however, we saw a different JOC’s game plan and one that was more free-flowing. St Johns grabbed the game with both hands and ran with it kicking eight goals to one in the second half. Although the Tigers never gave up, the momentum of the JOC’s was on full display as they ran out winners 95-44 in a tough game of football.

Swinburne will now face Albert Park away in what will be another test for the Razorbacks whilst the Sharks will come up against La Trobe in what will be a close and competitive match.

For the Tigers, Declan Fowler kicked three goals on return whilst small forwards Jana Kumaralingam, Zac Pahos and captain Brandon Kelly kicked a goal each. For the JOC’s Andrew Daly, Matthew De Poilly, Jasson Naffa, Matthew Bennett and Ben Ayache all kicked 2 goals each. Masala’s best included Riley Shaw, Tim Hoffman and Sahil Grewal whilst the best for the JOC’s were Andrew Daly, Corey Ely and Ethan Hope.

La Trobe hosted Albert Park in a strong clash for both teams to see where they measure up against not only one another but against the rest of the division. La Trobe got off to the better start taking a two goal lead into the first break. In the second half, however, La Trobe seized the momentum and controlled the game against the Falcons kicking eight goals to three to run out winners by 41 points.

St Johns will now host Box Hill North aiming to continue their winning ways in. Masala will have the bye before facing off against Albert Park in what will be an unpredictable affair. Eley Park was up for a tough challenge as they faced the undefeated Swinburne away however the Sharks definitely brought the fight to the Razorbacks. The first quarter saw Swinburne get off to a strong but inaccurate start as they kicked 2.5 for the first 25 minutes. During the second quarter, the Razorbacks extended their lead kicking fi ve goals to the Sharks’ four to go into the major break leading by 18 points.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

With this win, La Trobe now goes to the top of the ladder alongside Swinburne. Riley Alexander followed up his six goal haul from his last game with another bag of six. Bryce Dowler and Iryoung Fan were the other multiple goal scorers for La Trobe with 3 and 2 goals respectively.

MILESTONES

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Tim McGrath (Swinburne AFC)

50

Tim came across as a Swinburne student that played soccer growing up, loves his Hawks and has been a consistent player across half back for the club since 2017. He pays his 51st game this week, featuring 19 Clubbies, 11 Thirds, 11 Reserves and 10 Seniors. 1 Goal @ Parade College (he remembers it!) 12 times in the best. Tom Corrie (Swinburne AFC)

50

Tom debuted in 2016 after coming across from Old Ivanhoe to play Clubbies. Used to enjoy a Strawberry Big M before a 9.20am kick off - now wears Pink Crocs to inspire the boys pre game. Plays his 53rd game this week, including 29 Clubbies, 2 Thirds, 7 Reserves and 15 Seniors. 5 Goals including 1 on debut and 11 times in the best. Georgia Aanensen (Ivanhoe AFC)

50

Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates Ivies original Georgia Aanensen on playing her 50th game for the club in Round 4 (April 30). Georgia has been a loyal and committed Ivies player since the opening season in 2017. A versatile player, Georgia has lined up in most positions. She can play tall and take a good grab up forward and her athleticism ensures she gets to many contests and wins ball at ground level as well. As a key defender last season when the Ivies made the Premier C finals, Georgia was a pillar of strength and a role model to younger teammates who enjoyed her calm and friendly demeanour. Long may our lucky number 13 continue her commitment to the club - on and off the field. Jesse Scholz (Glen Eira)

50

Jesse is another graduate of the 2018 Old McKinnon/Glen Eira U19s Grand Final winning Premiership side. After a bad run of injuries, it’s great to see the lighting quick wingman achieve his first half century. We look forward to Jesse’s dash and terrific foot skills hitting forwards on the lead for many years to come. Matt Parkinson (Glen Eira)

50

Parko was captain of the 2018 Old McKinnon/Glen Eira U19s Grand Final winning Premiership side and was appointed Vice Captain of our Reserves team for season 2022. An ever reliable defender and quality left foot kick. We look forward to Parko hitting a team mate in space to springboard attacking forays for the Gryphons in many more games in the future. Will Clark (Old Scotch) Congratulations to Will Clark on reaching 50 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Will joined the club from Scotch College in 2018, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s, playing in the Grand Final team in 2018 and premiership team in 2019. He did make his 1st XVIII debut in 2019 and moved fully into the senior ranks in 2021, where he has played in both the 1st and 2nd XVIII. We wish Clarky all the best on reaching this milestone. Will Easton (Old Scotch)

50

Congratulations to Will Easton on reaching 50 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Will joined the club from Scotch College in 2018, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s. He moved into the senior ranks in 2021 post COVID-19, where he has played at Men’s 2nd, 3rd XVIII and under 23 level. We wish Easto all the best on reaching this milestone.

Since 2011 he has played predominantly at both Men’s 1st and 2nd XVIII level. Matt was a member of the Men’s 2013 & 2017 Grand Final teams and the 2019 Premier ‘B’ 2nd XVIII premiership team. We wish Seedy all the best on achieving this significant milestone.

Henry Dick (Old Scotch)

Henry joined the club from Scotch College in 2010, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s. Henry moved into the senior ranks in 2012 where he has played predominately in the Men’s 2nd XVIII and a handful of game in the 1st XVIII. Henry played in the Men’s 2nd XVIII Grand Final teams in 2013, 2016 and 2017 and was an integral part of the premiership team in 2019. He has captained the team for a number of years including 2021-22 and is a life member of the club. We wish Henry all the best on achieving this outstanding milestone.

David Machin (Ormond)

200

Screech joined Ormond U/19s from junior soccer. He played in the 2005 U/19 premiership. He also played in a Thirds Grand Final in 2009 and a Reserves Grand final in 2013. He has been an assistant coach for the Thirds for the past 4 seasons, loves the club and wants to win one more flag. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond on reaching this milestone.

George Garth (St Bernards)

300

St Bernards salute George Garth on becoming only the fifth player in the club’s history to reach 300 games. A St Bernards Junior, George played in back-to-back U19 Premiership sides in 2002-03. In 2004 George won the U19 Premier Best and Fairest and made his senior debut against Old Xavs. A tough on-baller, continually taking on the VAFA’s best midfielders, George’s ‘hard at it’ approach earned the respect of team-mates and opponents alike. With overseas travel, Covid and injuries along the way it’s taken George a while to chalk up the 300. In recent seasons, George has been a mainstay of the Ressies, assisting the development of younger players. Long-time team-mate Josh Madden says “George’s on field courage, leadership qualities and passion for Bernards (along with his Footy Trip organising skills) have made him one of our great clubmen”.

Caulfield bounce back from disappointment as St Kevin’s prove why they hold top spot display over the competition that sees them sitting top of the ladder and conceding just 41 points.

Old Xaverians would have been full of confidence after their tight win in round three, but they were no match for the competition leaders St Kevins. Old Xaverians started off defending strong and kept St Kevins to two goals in the first. It was in the second quarter was where St Kevins began to really break away. Their strength at the contest allowed them to dominate the possession and kick another four goals to go into halftime with a more than comfortable lead. Old Xaverians stepped up the pressure again in the third quarter and forced some turnovers for St Kevins. It led to a low scoring quarter with just one goal between both teams. St Kevins added a further two goals in the last quarter and continued their dominant

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Coming off a disappointing loss last round Caulfield Grammarians had a point to prove in their match against Melbourne Uni. They wasted no time and came out playing high pressure football and took a strong three goal lead after the first quarter. A beautiful snap saw the first goal in the second go to Caulfield and they didn’t stop there. It was a quarter that saw them control the play and go into the main break having conceded only one goal against Melbourne Uni. The third quarter started much the same with Caulfield opening the scoring early, only

It was a slow start to the match between Kew and West Brunswick with neither side able to capitalise on their possession and score, resulting in a scoreless first quarter for both teams. Kew were the first ones on the board early in the second and continued to take command of the game to take a 19 point lead at half time. It was a gallant effort by West Brunwsick who were able to chain together some possession but the pressure that Kew was able to deliver was too strong for them to trouble Kew on the scoreboard. The groundwork of West Brunswick saw them take advantage of some missed marks by Kew in the final term but Kew were able to out mark and cause turnovers. A breakthrough goal came in the last term for West Brunswick but Kew who despite not scoring in the final term were able to come away with the points and take a slight hold on second place of the ladder.
