VAFA UMPIRES ROUND
Stephen Privitera
night participated in drills run by the AFL umpires as well as participating in a Q and A session post training.
The VAFA is celebrating Umpires Round this weekend, with the aim of encouraging people to get involved in umpiring in our great competition. This coincides with the AFL Community Umpiring Rounds (8 and 9) of the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
The VAFA Umpires Round is another opportunity to encourage those who still want to be involved in football, to take up umpiring and stay involved. Whether you are new to the game or your playing days are over, then umpiring is a great way to contribute to the game. The BJS Women’s Academy has already kicked off for season 2022 and is encouraging female participation in umpiring.
Throughout the week, the VAFA is celebrating the important role that umpires play in our wonderful game. Each weekend, over 400 dedicated boundary, field and goal umpires can be seen officiating at VAFA matches. The VAFA umpires show great dedication through attending training every Monday and Wednesday night. Our expert team of umpire coaches provide high level fitness training and video review feedback to support each umpire. Throughout this week, the AFL are joining forces with local football competitions through a number of initiatives. For the VAFA, on Wednesday night, we welcomed the following four umpires to training:
Anyone can get involved in umpiring and enjoy the many benefits the roles provide
•
Simon Meredith (AFL field umpire)
•
Chris Donlon (AFL field umpire)
•
Patrick Cran (AFL boundary umpire)
•
Michael Saunders (AFL boundary umpire)
Anyone can get involved in umpiring and enjoy the many benefits the roles provide, and not only do you have the best view of the action, but it’s also an excellent way to keep fit, be a part of a team and learn skills that you can take when you walk off the ground.
If you are interested in becoming an umpire at the VAFA, please visit www.vafa.com.au for further information. The VAFA thanks all umpires and the VAFAUA committee for their dedication and significant contribution to our great game. We encourage all in the VAFA community to acknowledge and show appreciation towards the umpires officiating games on the weekend.

Whatever happens, footy this weekend remains the real winner While we’re pleased to have consistent football back in our lives, the opening five rounds have thrown up different trends, momentum swings, low scores, upset victories and even a prospective question to grumpy Brian Waldron about who the coach of the year might be.
of losses doesn’t continue. What will happen is Old Brighton rejig their forward line structure without Will Lewis as the mainstay, opening the door to be more unpredictable coming out of their midfield as they look to get goals from Michael Karayannis, Anthony Zimmerman and even Jordan Segar.
Whichever ground you’re at this weekend there’s plenty to absorb coming from each contest and plenty to look forward to. We’ll endeavour to pinpoint what will happen, and what won’t happen in round six of the William Buck Premier season, which signals the conclusion of the opening third of the season.
What won’t happen is Max Kennedy, the newcomer to the Old Brighton midfield being able to roam free around stoppages, expect someone from the purple army to keep him closely checked while they’ll want to put some time into monitoring the movements of Harry Hill. On the flipside of the midfield battle, Josh Watson and Kenny Ong have the ability and the capacity to get the sherrin into the hands of Dave Mirra and Ed Greene very quickly from centre bounce stoppages.
Without doubt, Old Scotch and Old Xaverians is the VAFA’s greatest rivalry. These two sides absolutely hate each other and many times over the years the tension has flared between these rivals.
For the victors of this game, a spot in the top four is cemented, the loser will be left licking their wounds and back with the pack. There’s plenty on the line in this one.
On Saturday it will be a different looking Old Scotch side under Mark Gnatt, for too long the Cardinals have been bullied and beaten up by their arch-nemesis, that won’t happen this weekend.
The RSN Carnival Match of the Day heads to Glen Huntly Oval as Caulfield Grammarians play host to University Blues. Last year these sides went 1-1 in the head-to-head battles with wins away from their home ground.
What will happen from an Old Scotch perspective is Andy Jelbart will lead from the front, ably supported by Arion Richter-Salter through the half-back flank and midfield, Jesse Castan will continue to impress in the ruck. Facing up against Stavrou, Beetham and Tom Hart through the midfield.
Last Saturday saw Uni come away with an upset win over Old Melburnians to get their season back on track, all without Cordy, Fasolo, Harper, Young and Kennedy-Harris. We’ll have to wait until 2pm Saturday if Guy Martyn pulls any of the stars back into the line-up to pile on the pain for the Fields.
What won’t happen is a margin similar to recent contests between the two, Old Xav’s have an 11-3 lead in the head-to-head battle, with an average winning margin of 48 points, it will be a lot tighter than that come the final siren at Camberwell Sports Park.
What will happen is Julian Dobosz will feel freer at home and Caulfield will look to hit him up on the lead, within range of goal he is as dangerous as any forward in the league. Isaac Morrisby another who if he gets off the chain is damaging, averaging two goals a game.
Where it could well be won for the Xaverians is in the opening term (Ranked #1 for first quarter scores), they’ve been faststarters each week and James Byrne will be expecting them to stay ahead for the full four quarters should the opening quarter trend continue. Old Scotch can use this as a minifinal, as a win here could push them into the top 4, a spot that not many would have had picked during the pre-season crystal ball selection period.
What won’t happen unfortunately is a match-up between Sam Dorevitch and Sam Grimley, the Fields general in defence will miss this game through concussion protocols, Simon “Punchy” Williams may have had a few sleepless nights figuring out how to curb the influence of the leading goalkicker in William Buck Premier.
Speaking of mini-final’s, there’s a precursor to September at Harry Trott Oval as former Melbourne Demon, Jared Rivers (coach of Collegians) faces up against former Melbourne Demon, Greg Hutchison (coach of Old Brighton).
In a worrying trend at St Bernard’s, scoring more than 50 points is becoming an issue through the opening third of the season. Even more concerning for the Snowdogs is how measly and tight St Kevin’s defence is, they’re conceding just 46 points per game.
The Tonners are coming off a comprehensive victory against Caulfield while Collegians are hoping their previous fortnight THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

What will happen, that trend will continue as the SKOB 18-man press comes into full effect at T H King oval and the experience of the St Bernard’s side is even further impacted with the retirement of Nathan Kazuro, and Charlie Vague still two weeks away from returning. What won’t happen, Paul Groves and the St Bernard’s coaching staff won’t roll over, the coach has the ability to pull a rabbit out of the hat, and this might be his finest hour if he’s able to find a something from his old Western Bulldogs colleague and St Bede’s Premiership coach, a Luke Beveridge style theme for the Snowdogs to lean into. The final game of Round 6 is at the home of the VAFA. Elsternwick Park hosts the matchup between Old Melburnians and Old Trinity. A win for OM’s sets up Paul Satterley’s team for a big tilt at the title ahead the next block of games, they will be ruing last weekend’s result, having had 7 days to think about how they were stifled by Uni Blues after half time. What will happen is the OM’s getting off to a stronger start in the opening quarter, they are ranked #10 for scores in opening terms and won’t want to find themselves chasing down the T’s if the green and gold get their tails up early. Old Trinity are hoping to welcome back Alex Polidoris into their forward line, adding another avenue to goal. If he plays, what we hope to happen is a shootout between him at one end, and Al Armstrong at the other, two VAFA stalwarts who know where the goals are. All the predictions tend to get thrown out the window as soon as the ball is bounced. What I am confident of saying is that what will happen on Saturday is great, tight, tough footy played in the right spirit that will leave us wanting more!

A wintery day in Melbourne evens up the contest Saturday reminded us that winter is on its way with a bit of rain and plenty of wind around the grounds. The Jackers snagged themselves a win in a close battle against Williamstown, while St Bedes Mentone upset the home crowd, beating Old Haileybury by 4 points. De La keep their streak alive overpowering Old Carey, and the Uni Blacks remain successful as they defeat Fitzroy.
A momentous day in Fitzroy’s history books as the Brunswick Street Oval grandstand was renamed to honour club legend, Kevin Murray. The Uni Blacks started the game strong, taking advantage of the wind. A solid second quarter from the Roys wrestled the game to a 10-point margin heading into halftime. Fitzroy’s midfield presence was evident with Bill and Ted Clayton working hard at every stoppage. In the end, key goals from Louis Vescio and Nick Hey coupled with domineering defensive pressures down back allowed The Uni Blacks to secure the win by 45 points. Next week, Fitzroy face the red-hot St Bedes Mentone while The Uni Blacks enjoy a week off with the bye.
AJAX hosted Williamstown down at Moorleigh Oval in an arm wrestle for the 4-points. This even match up had players fighting to keep the ball in their possession. AJAX were able to take grass in the third quarter with elite performances from Benjamin Krongold and Toby Sheezel. A clutch goal from Nick Ebinger in the final term provided momentum for Williamstown in their attempt to steal the win. CY’s Bradley Tucker and Jack Noonan left everything on the field remaining persistent at every content. An important goal from AJAX’s Kane Nissenbaum sealed the deal for the Jackers, winning the match by 10 points. AJAX will take on Old Carey in round 6 while Williamstown are up against a tough opponent in De La Salle.
Playing 4-quarters of bold and assertive footy, De La Salle were victorious over Old Carey. De La controlled this game from the outset and throughout, highlighted through their steadfast attack and overall scoreboard dominance. Trent Shannon’s unwavering pressure was on display, locking the game in De La’s forward 50 and securing himself 4 goals. Co-Captain Sean Fisher showed exceptional leadership, holding up the team down back. Old Carey’s Tom Jepson was among the best for The Panthers celebrating his 50th game while Jason Athanasopoulos managed to snag himself a goal on debut. Looking ahead, Old Carey head home to take on AJAX and De La Salle are off to Fearon Reserve to face Williamstown.
It was a seesawing affair at Princes Park as Old Haileybury took on St Bedes Mentone. The appetite and determination from both sides saw the momentum shift at every stoppage. The Tigers displayed incredible teamwork around the ground with Alex Browne giving the midfield plenty of opportunity in the middle. The Tiger’s 22-point lead in the last was promptly answered by Old Haileybury’s Jack Lonnie, kicking three goals in the last 5 minutes with Max Sinclair and Jack Munro also bringing the intensity. The pressure from Zac Calvez was enough to keep the Bloods from snatching the lead with his Leo Barry style mark on the final siren. St Bedes will carry this energy into their next game against Fitzroy while Haileybury face The Sharks fresh off the bye. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

No errors for the early challengers as winter comes to town in early May Hampton Rovers and Mazenod had little trouble disposing of less credentialled opponents, whilst Monash Blues endured a tight battle to score the four points in round five. Here’s what took place…
Marcellin pushed Old Geelong hard in this encounter before the OGS took control in the last quarter to carry the day. Although the score was level at quarter time, Old Geelong kicked 2.6 to 3.0, a reflection of their territorial dominance. They straightened up in the second term to take a two goal lead to the main break, but Marcellin whittled that back to five points at three-quarter time. It seemed as though Marcellin had the momentum, but Old Geelong have the ability to go a long way in this competition, and serious sides stand up in this situation. Old Geelong finished with four of the last six goals and emerged victorious by 21 points. Chris Hatzis led the way with four goals for Old Geelong with Sam Hooper, in a best on ground display, and Connor Dixon bagging three each. Adam Tomaro, Patrick Howe and Jeremiah Antypas kicked two each for Marcellin, with Shaun Tyquin their best.
A profligacy in front of goal that led to a total of 30 misses from 52 shots did not bother the Hampton Rovers too much as they defeated Preston Bullants by 149 points. What will make coach Anthony Quon happiest is the intensity that kept the Bullants to just three shots for the afternoon. At the other end of the park a nine-goal second quarter put the game to bed, but a return of 9.18 in the second half meant that the margin could have been greater still. Nine goals from Josh McPherson covered nicely for the absence of spearhead Danny Corp, with captain Christian Carnovale and Lachlan Cairns strong at the contest. Conor and Rory Howard tried hard to stem the tide for the Bullants.
Monash Blues took on Parkdale in a good oldfashioned slog at Frearson Oval, emerging victorious by three goals in an encounter that will leave a lot of boys rather sore on Sunday morning. The vultures were goalless in the first half, registering six behinds only, but only went to the sheds 14 points down as Monash kicked the only three goals. Both sides managed just one goal in the third term as the same margin remained at the final turn, leaving all to play for in the last twenty minutes. Parkdale kept knocking at the door, but the experience of the Blues held sway and the Vultures could get no closer, Monash saluting by eighteen points. The Blues had six individual goal kickers, with the more defensive-minded Lachlan Cosgriff, MacGregor Cameron and Daniel Easson excellent. Sam Hart kicked two for Parkdale, with Ethan Marshall and Matthew Emmanouil their best.
Old Ivanhoe kicked eight goals to one in the second quarter as Ormond came to town, and that was all she wrote as the locals cruised to a 13 goal win. Luke Scuderi had a day out at full forward, kicking nine majors and making Chelsworth Park his own. Ormond took the game up to Ivanhoe early and while the locals were steady enough to lead by eleven points at the first break, it’s the second stanza where battle was taken away from the Monders. A 56-point halftime deficit was always going to be too much, and although the visitors did not let their heads drop Old Ivanhoe won every quarter to inflict Ormond’s third straight defeat. Daniel Cookson and Harrison Reid continued their early-season form for Old Ivanhoe, while James Tsakonas and Will McCartney battled manfully for Ormond.

Mazenod took control of their encounter against UHS-VU from the opening bell, and did not let their foot off the accelerator until the day was done. Six goals to one in the opening term did the job, and although UHS were more competitive in the second quarter, Mazenod repeated the dose in the third stanza. That left the Nodders with a 75-point advantage at the final change. To their credit, at no stage did UHS-VU shirk the contest, sharing the fourth quarter spoils three goals each, but Mazenod were intent on stamping their finals credentials and prevailed by 77 points. Peter Rozanitis kept the scorers busy with four goals. Matthew Fewings was best afield, and he and Bradley Kovac kicked three goals each. For UHS-VU, none battled harder than Todd Cracknell, James Gilfillan and Harrison Rocke.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Portia Ronsberg (MCC FC) The VAFA congratulates Portia Ronsberg from the MCC Football Club who is the round 5 Anytime Fitness Rising Star nominee. Portia kicked two goals in MCC’s win on the weekend and has consistently performed well in the opening rounds of the 2022 season. What the club said: Portia is playing her first season with MCC as a year 12 student. She has slotted into the team seamlessly and had an immediate impact to earn the Round 5 VAFA Rising Star nomination. A measured and composed forward/mid, Portia had her best game for the club in Round 5, getting plenty of the ball and executing set shot goals in slippery conditions to make it look easy. Portia has very clean skills, knows where to position herself and reads the play brilliantly. Portia is looking forward to working further on her craft, improving her fi tness and spending more time as a midfielder. The Club is excited about Portia’s future and developing other emerging female footballers in a fun and inclusive environment.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Cairan Wrigglesworth (Therry Penola) The VAFA congratulates Cairan Wrigglesworth from Therry Penola on being awarded the round 5 men’s rising star nominee. Cairan starred for the Lions in their first win of the season over Whitefriars on the weekend, kicking a goal and being named in the best as part of their 14 point win. What the club said: Cairan is an exciting young footballer who has improved dramatically since the preseason. He has been asked to play numerous roles all over the ground and is very coachable. He is a physical inside player who can also execute well on the outside. He has a promising footballing future

Division 1 shakes up ladder position once again proves nothing The Kew Bears outfit dismantled the bottom of the table St Mary’s Salesian with a 117 point thumping. Kew this year have only suffered the one loss, whilst St Marys sits firmly at the bottom of the ladder remaining winless for the 2022 season. Josh Janssen was the real winner of the day booting 7 majors for Kew, and most interestingly they also managed to kick 9 goals 5 in the last term – that’s serious kicking. This is a great percentage booster for Kew and a confidence moment where they can reset just how good they are and move with the momentum from there – for St Marys it’s another tough Saturday and may be best to forget it, move on, and see if they can take a scalp in round 6.
Well the surprises just keep on coming this year in Division 1 with round 5 producing another mouth watering addition as the ladder positions are being tossed out the window, as some games were decided by pure grit and pure heart. Peninsula Old Boys faced up to Prahran Assumption in wet, greasy conditions. Going against the grain of how the first four rounds were played it was Peninsula who got the jump leading at quarter time. A topsy-turvy affair saw them fall four points behind at three quarter time. The class and run of Prahran proved to be too much for a gallant Peninsula, resulting in a 20 point victory taking them to 3-1-1 for the year, whilst Peninsula now sits 8th on the ladder with a 1-4 record. This game was always going to be interesting given each side is sitting in the bottom / mid tier of the league, this will be a confidence boosting win for Prahran.
Perhaps the shock loss of the round came out at Donvale as Whitefriars went down to the second last placed, Therry Penola. It’s worth noting at their best Whitefriars can compete with the top echelon, but as I have said time and again through the year they have a tendency to be caught napping, which is exactly what unfolded on the weekend as Therry Penola flexed their muscles and ripped the 4 points right out of their hands. This is a huge win for the Lions given they were winless coming into this game, having been smacked by over 100 in previous week. To come out and win by 14 points is highly impressive. For Whitefriars, although yes they did nearly come back and steal it in the end, this is a massive sliding door moment of how good are you really going to be…
Turning our attention to the team to beat in Division 1, the undefeated PEGS took on a team that I see as a genuine threat in Glen Eira. It was a good test for PEGS, Glen Eira is the team that rose from Division 2 and has started the year in hot fashion. PEGS class was on display from the get go never relinquishing a lead for the entirety of the game, eventually running out 37 point victors. I really don’t think the 37 point deficit is an apt way to describe the quality of footy the Gryphons can put together, but it also gives them a great insight into where they sit against the top of the table in their new division.

In the final match of the round, Old Camberwell faced off against Oakleigh, who it is worth noting are the biggest improvers for this 2022 season. I called, and have continued to call this Camberwell outfit the Coupe De Gras of Division 1. I’m ready to give that title up, and give praise to this Oakleigh team for coming from behind in the first half to take the win by 16 points. This result is huge in context of the season, and also just in context of maybe how blinded I am from the success of Camberwell last year compared to this, now sitting at 2-2-1, behind Oakleigh who are rolling at 4-1 for the year! It was clear from last year once this Oakleigh team could move the ball out of defence they had weapons up forward who can win games for them, and that’s exactly what is happening. This is a massive momentum shifter for the upper teams of the Division, and I can’t wait to see how or even if Camberwell can compose and get back to their best footy from 2021.

Percentage only separating the best of the best In the space of a couple of hours on Saturday, Division 2 went from being wide open with clear front-runners, to a top 4 that is all square with percentage the only thing separating all four sides.
This is the third consecutive week Julian Eimutis has been named best on ground for the Unicorns, to go along with two goals in the 32 point win over Bulleen Templestowe. He had plenty of assistance with Kruyt, Edmonds and Wijayakumara all kicking 2 each as well.
In the top of the table clash at Ivanhoe Park, the Hoers seemed to be in total control for much of the afternoon. Keeping the ladder leaders Brunswick goalless in the opening half of the contest. Given the nature of the low-scoring contest, a 34 point three quarter time lead was a bridge too far as Ivanhoe held out a fast finish from Tom Hunter’s men.
The contest saw MHSOB get out to a 5 goal lead at quarter time and the margin hovered around there for the afternoon. It’s a different style of Bulleen this year, there’s no question about that. They won’t go away, and they’re staying in games a lot longer than recent years which will fill the club with a lot of confidence after a couple of lean seasons. David Dakin has been a regular in the best, while Anthony Lucisano is averaging 3 goals a game up forward. They get another opportunity this weekend to test themselves against the best travelling to Alec Gillon Oval to face Brunswick.
The Division 2 sharpshooters were standing at separate ends as Ash Close (18 goals) kicked 3 for the victors, while Tom Wilson (19 goals), added three more to his tally. Daniel Jones was named best afield, with the support of Luke Svarc. Brunswick remain on top with a 22% gap on Ivanhoe in second, they’ll see this Saturday as an opportunity to get back on the winners list when they host Bulleen Templestowe. Ivanhoe AFC are shooting for 4 wins in a row as they travel to Doncaster to face Yarra Old Grammarians.
In the lowest scoring contest of the round, Old Parade were held to just one goal against West Brunswick, the goal came in the opening term while for the Magpies they were only able to add three more to their own score from there.
Yarra Old Grammarians will enter that clash with their tails up after the bottom of the table clash against Power House went down to the wire. Twice Yarra broke away to a more than three goal lead before it was whittled down to under a kick.
Will Dillon was best afield for West Brunswick, Luke Buckler again hit the scoreboard with another two goals, as did David Ferrier. For the Paradians, it’s a case of licking their wounds, putting this one behind them and going again, they’ll come up against Aquinas who have run themselves back into form over the weekend.
Liam Marshall kicked 3 goals in the win, Edison Donelan named best afield for the second straight week. While for Power House, perhaps a goalless first quarter made the task too tough to overcome, they didn’t give up all afternoon and their first win of the season isn’t far away with endeavour like they showed. Could it come in the form of an upset this weekend against MHSOB? If Gold Coast can do it against the Swans at the SCG, they should be asking why not us? THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

They didn’t have it all their own way Aquinas at home to Manningham, trailing at quarter time they turned a nine point deficit to a 10 point lead at half time before really hitting their straps and going bang in the second half with 11 goals to two, extending the final margin to 71 points. Luke Harley and Michael Di Donato shared the majors with four goals each. Di Donato in a best on ground display, he’s putting together quite the season and the coaching staff will no doubt be impressed with the first third of the season. Manningham’s next assignment is West Brunswick at Koonung Park, where hopefully for their sake after a good week on the track they’ll see themselves as a genuine chance to ruffle some Magpie feathers. What we see this coming weekend is the top 5 against the bottom 5, will there be genuine separation on the ladder come 5pm Saturday night? Or will a couple of upsets throw a cat amongst the pigeons? Only time will tell.

Animals pretty in pink, Wickers sitting pretty as ladder leaders On a cold Melbourne afternoon, Division 3 Men’s remains to some degree, a previously-divisionfour world, and we’re all just living in it, with both Elsternwick and South Melbourne Districts getting more wins on the board to keep their finals chances well and truly alive.
as the home side’s multiple-goalscorers. Seasoned backman Joden Crothers also snuck forward for his goal for the year. For the losing side, Jordan Doyle (3), Nicholas Dimitriadis (1), and Michael Szulc (1) were the only goalkickers, and Benjamin Hodge was their best-on.
The Westbourne Grammarians unfortunately end the round on the bottom of the ladder despite a valiant effort to get a team together, as their reserves team forfeited for the second week in a row. Three out of four of the games surpassed the 100 points threshold, but wintery weather meant there were behinds kicked everywhere.
Elsternwick remains firmly on top of the ladder after storming home with an 8-goal final term to beat Parkside at Holmes Todd Oval. It was an arm wrestle all day, with the Wickers down by two points at quarter time before kicking seven majors to take a large buffer into the main break. But the Red Devils were never out of it, scaling back the deficit to just five points before Elsternwick showed their class. The Wickers’ Daniel Marchese (6), David Convery (5), and Julian Yeatman (4) all got on the board in a big way, but it was Dylan Jones (2) who was named best-on for his efforts. For Parkside, Simon Mackie (3) was back to his best, while Lewis Balcombe (3) and Shane Doherty (2) were good in front of goal, with the latter taking top honours.
At Albert Park Oval 1, South Melbourne Districts took down a feisty North Brunswick side by 23 points, staying in the top four in the process. The Melbourne weather wreaked havoc on the scoreboard, with 10.18 to 7.13 the final score. Despite this, the Bloods kept their noses in front all day, limiting the Bulls to just three goals to half-time. A late rally in the fourth term wasn’t enough as South Melbourne Districts ran away with it, as Nicholas Koleits kicked three majors, and divisional goalkicking leader Oliver Dufficy contributing with two, as did Jamie Brooker and Jack White. Jack Cotton was their best. For the away side, Patrick Notaro kicked four goals to try and keep his team in it, while Marcus took top honours as best-on.
A 16-goal first half set up Canterbury’s eventual 59-point win over Richmond Central at Canterbury Sportsground. It was a fairly even contest until the second quarter where the Cobras blew open the 10-point buffer they’d taken into quarter time to be up by 46 points going into the main break. The Snakes couldn’t seem to get a handle on Richmond Central’s lead, despite kicking five majors to Canterbury’s six in the second half. The Cobras had four multiplegoalkickers, with Thomas Lowden kicking five to be his side’s best player, while John Nicolopoulos (3), Ryan Murray (3), and Nick Szabo (2) all had their kicking boots on. For the away side, Jack Bilson (3) and Justin Perillo (3) continued their goalkicking ways, with Billy Browning-Briese taking top honours as best-on.
It was goals aplenty for Emmaus St Leo’s at Bennettswood Reserve as they ran away 127-point winners against a gutsy Westbourne Grammarians side. In front of a largely-pink crowd for their annual ladies luncheon fundraiser, the Animals kicked seven goals in the first quarter to well and truly set the pace, before kicking six more to leave a buffer of 72 points going into the main break. To the Warriors’ credit, they didn’t give up, registering 15 scoring shots by the final siren. Both Matt Hill and Jonathan Greensides kicked five majors each, while Dan Hill (4), Harry Davis (2), and Nathan Bird (2) rode shotgun THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Richmond Central will have a fight on their hands when South Melbourne Districts arrive at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. The Bloods have lost no love since their divisional elevation, and will look to go 4-1 in the early stages of the year, while the Snakes have the chance to kickstart their top-4 hopes. For the third weekend in a row, Canterbury Sportsground is the destination for Canterbury, who will welcome ladder-leaders Elsternwick for their round six clash. Both teams are sitting on four wins, with the Wickers only ahead on superior percentage, which means top spot is up for grabs.

A breakaway group emerges with dominant wins around the grounds Eley Park came into this contest looking to bring the same energy that they brought to their previous match against Swinburne as they faced another tough challenge in La Trobe. Immediately, La Trobe sent a sign they meant business, dominating the first quarter kicking seven goals to one. We saw more of this in the second quarter as La Trobe piled on another eight unanswered goals. This took the half-time lead to 91 points.
If Division 4 was representative of the opening nights of the Tour De France we have a breakaway group with the rest playing catch up. How will the next third of the season unfold? We await with bated breath. St Johns hosted Box Hill North in a good test for the Demons whilst it would hopefully be another win to the tally for the JOCs. St Johns shot out to an early lead of 18 points at quarter-time which they would then extend to 27 at halftime.
The Sharks needed to bring something special to stop the momentum of La Trobe, however, La Trobe instead stood on the accelerator kicking 12 goals to 0 in the second half to finish with a whopping 181 points and win by 168 points. A 100 point-win has only been achieved once previously this season in division 4 and this was also a La Trobe win which provides worrying signs for teams to come. Tom Johnston was the lone goalscorer for the Sharks whilst James Dowling and Matthew Carlile continued their top form for Eley Park. La Trobe’s Riley Alexander and Bryce Dowler once again proved they are potentially the best forward duo in the league kicking a combined 10 goals for the game. The goal-kicking load was shared amongst the squad with 13 goal kickers including 7 players that kicked multiple goals. In addition, Lachlan Webb and Archie Conboy were amongst the best on the ground.
Going into the second-half goalless, the Demons needed a spark and while they didn’t swing the game, they won the quarter to bring the deficit back to 23 points. St Johns, however, seized control once again adding another four goals in the fourth quarter and taking the game by 54 points. This lead could’ve been even larger with inaccurate kicking costing the JOC’s a bigger win as they kicked 21 behinds despite their nine goals. Nicholas Terrill played his best game of the season for the JOC’s kicking 3 majors and being named best on. Matthew Bennett was the team’s other multiple goal-scorer with 2 goals. For the Demons, it was Marcus Lorkin who had all the goals with 2 majors for the game (both in the third quarter). The best for the JOC’s included the previously mentioned Nicholas Terrill and Matthew Bennett in addition to Corey Ely. For the Demons, Beau Parthenides, Thomas Rickard and Sean Donovan led the way when it came to the best.
Eley Park will now have the week off to try to regroup whilst La Trobe will face a more competitive and tougher opponent in the form of St Johns.
St Johns will now face a big test in the form of La Trobe whilst Box Hill North will have a major task ahead of them as they face the undefeated Swinburne.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
On Sunday, Albert Park came into this contest against Swinburne with a point to prove and knowing they had to take it to the Razorbacks early if they were to stand a chance. The Falcons did just this, holding a 4-point lead at quarter time, marking the first time this season that Swinburne had lost the opening quarter.

The Razorbacks however rebounded in the second quarter stunning the Falcons in the process kicking six unanswered goals. Albert Park responded accordingly in the third kicking four goals to one to bring the margin back to 23 points. A fairly balanced final term ensued before the Razorbacks kicked the last three goals to run out winners by 46 points. For the Falcons, Alexander Evans was their multiple goal scorer with 2 majors whilst the best players included Nick Armistead, Justyn Kennewell and Saknarin Khongbut. For the Razorbacks, it was once again the Nicholas Coad show as he added three goals to his tally taking him to third in the division’s goal-kicking tally. Ben Cox, Harrison Bernardo and Luke Mcmanus kicked 2 goals each. The best for the Razorbacks include Kieran Herbert, Jed Toner and Brent Hodson.

Stephanie Castagnini (La Trobe)
50
Congratulations to La Trobe’s Stephanie Castagnini on reaching 50 games – Casta first joined the Trobers in 2017 slotting straight into the Senior Women’s side. She arrived with a soccer background, but wanting to try Aussie Rules, and had an immediate impact. Casta is a strong midfielder who rarely loses a contest but also has an amazing football IQ and the ability to kick on both sides of the body. She has been runner up in the club’s best & fairest twice and has been a member of the League’s ‘Team of the Year’ on multiple occasions. In recent years Steph has served on the LTUFC committee and performed the role of Women’s Football Operations Manager. Congratulations Casta on playing your 50th this coming Saturday!
Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates four of our finest on playing their 50 th games for the club. Gerrard Williams and Adam Pipakis played their 50 th games in Round 4, while Fonda Kyriakos and Aaron Marks recorded their milestone games in Round 5. Former Ivanhoe Junior Gerrard and Fonda played in Ivanhoe’s Under 19s together in 2018 – Fonda winning the Under’s 19s B&F. They have been regular seniors teammates since 2019. ‘Gezza’ Williams has developed into a solid and mobile ruckman with a great leap who gives onballers like Fonda a consistent advantage at the stoppages. It’s been a longer journey for Aaron, who began with the club in 2017 and has had injury setbacks, and ‘Pippa’, who was playing in 2015 when the Hoers reserves won the D2 premiership. Both have found consistency after settling into their roles as senior D2 players last year.
50
Well done, and keep it going you fab four Hoers!
Andrew Fraser (Richmond Central)
150
Congratulations to stalwart Andrew Fraser who reaches 150 game milestone this weekend. “Panda” a much loved veteran and wily forward is a fiercely competitive player- good luck.
Zac O’Halloran (St Bernards)
150
Another St Bernards Junior, Zac progressed through under 19 and Ressies ranks before establishing himself as a regular in our Senior line-up. A member of our 2018 Premiership team, Zac regularly takes on the VAFA’s best and often taller big men where his strength in ruck duels along with his ability to get across the ground and lead-up marking have become a feature of his game. Well done Zac!

Heartbreak for Marcellin in close finish, while West Brunswick soar to Fourth on the ladder St Kevin’s continued their winning streak making it 5 straight this season, after their win on the weekend against Melbourne Uni, who have had a few tough weeks in a row. Strong goal kicking by St.Kevin’s saw them go into half time with a 27 point lead and limiting Melbourne Uni to just the one shot at goal. Despite Melbourne Uni’s best efforts and taking some intercept marks the wall of defence that was set up by St Kevin’s across half back was able to limit any of the chances that Melbourne Uni had to score. In the end St Kevin’s came out with another commanding win, this time it was 75 points. Only conceding three points to Melbourne Uni. At the end of round 5 we can now see just how strong the defence of St Kevin’s is with them only having 44 points scored against them so far.
Xaverians would be looking for an upset to break through. Kew made it clear from early on that they had come to play and were looking for the win. They were the first to score and played high pressure football on Old Xaverians to keep them scoreless for the first quarter After the break the game continued on the same pace with Kew continuing to command the play and extending their lead to be ahead comfortably going into half time. Old Xaverians did their best to keep up with Kew in the last half and by applying more pressure defensively were able to keep Kew quiet in front of goals allowing only 2 more for the rest of the game. The strength of the Kew team prevailed to see them come away with a 31 point win and keep them in second place on the ladder. It was an exhilarating finish to the game between Caulfield Grammarians and Marcellin that went to the wire for one of the best finishes of the season to date. Despite the close finish it was a back and forward game in the early stages with neither team able to get control. Caulfield took the lead by making the most of their limited chances in front of goal and had a handy 2 goal lead at half time. The Defensive play of Caulfield saw them keep Marcellin scoreless going into half time. It was Caulfield who came out early and got the first score in the third, Marcellin replied not long after to get momentum swinging their way. The confidence of Marcellin continued to grow and they continued to up their pressure on Caulfield. Marcellin opened the scoring in the last term to set up for a spectacular ending. It was all Marcellin for the term, heaping on the pressure and keeping Caulfield scoreless for the entire half. A third goal from Marcellin came in the dying seconds of the final quarter and unfortunately the siren went before they could try again. It was a heartbreaking loss after a much stronger second half of football for Marcellin.
It has been a season of mixed results so far for West Brunswick and after a loss in round 4 they needed to bounce back in the game against the bottom placed St Mary’s. West Brunswick came to play early and scored the three goals in the first quarter, with inaccuracy the only thing stopping them from taking a bigger lead going into half time. The second quarter showed signs of improvement for St Mary’s who were able to tighten up defensively on West Brunswick and only allowed them to score 4 goals for the rest of the game. The effort for reward came in the final term for St. Mary’s who were able to end the day on a high note getting one goal on the board. The speed and pressure of West Brunswick throughout the game saw them come away 51 point winners which gave them a nice percentage boost to see them sitting at 4th spot on the ladder. It was a 2 versus 4 matchup for the game between Kew and Old Xaverians. With Kew needing to get the win to hold onto second spot on the ladder. Old
