SEASON 2023 - May 20
Community Umpire Week
Stephen PriviteraVAFA Umpire Operations ManagerFollowing the success of National Community Umpiring Week, the VAFA will be showing its appreciation for umpires this weekend during Round 6 of the competition. Community Umpiring Week raises awareness of umpiring as an opportunity to be a part of the game and celebrates the important role of umpires across all levels of football.
The VAFA is focused on increasing the number of umpires and this round seeks to celebrate the contribution of umpires and to encourage more people to consider umpiring. We need more umpires across our great competition and there are opportunities to get involved for the remainder of the 2023 season. Umpiring offers an opportunity to be a part of our game, increase your fitness and get paid. Please visit vafa. com.au for further information on how to join VAFA umpiring.
AFL Umpire Visits
For Community Umpiring Week in the VAFA, we have had some fantastic support from the AFL umpiring ranks. The VAFA umpiring group were fortunate enough to be visited at training by several AFL umpires across the field, boundary, and goal umpiring ranks. Our thanks to:
• Field Umpire- Peter Bailes
• Boundary Umpire- Patrick Cran
• Goal Umpire- Chelsea Roffey
The VAFA umpires in attendance had the opportunity to be coached by the AFL umpires and hear about their experience in reaching the elite level.
Umpire Recruitment & Retention
Events like Community Umpiring Week function to increase awareness of umpiring as a sport of choice to participate in the game in a different way or as an additional activity whilst still also playing. Jointly, the VAFA and VAFAUA aspire to be the destination of choice for community umpires, an aspiration we’re actively working towards.
The Umpiring Department is proud of the increased investment in umpire recruitment and coaching in 2023. The coaching panel assembled is of a very high calibre with many coaches having VFL experience. At Elsternwick Park every Monday and Wednesday night throughout the season, you will see new umpires receiving expert on field skills training and taking part in video analysis.
Fostering an Inclusive and Diverse Umpiring Group
A continued focus of the umpiring team is to ensure we are fostering an inclusive environment, to enable our group to be as diverse as the competition we serve. VAFA HQ and the VAFAUA have been jointly focussed on promoting greater gender balance on the umpiring panel.
The Amateur Footballer
Ben McWigganVAFA Umpires Association PresidentFemale Umpiring is a key focus area for us in 2023. The VAFA was pleased to host the launch of the BJS Female Umpire Academy at Elsternwick Park in April. The BJS Female Umpire Academy is a female development and support network. The Academy aims to create an environment that allows female umpires to feel welcome, valued and equal.
The VAFA is pleased to have two amazing female umpire support resources in Asha Hinton (Female Umpire Mentor) and Julia Stokes (Female Umpire Liaison Officer). Both Asha and Julia play a crucial role in supporting and growing our female umpire numbers in the competition.
Match Day Environment
Those involved in our great game are some of, if not, the most passionate sporting fans on the globe which helps make football the fantastic game it is. This Community Umpiring round, it would be remiss of us not to cover the role the entire VAFA community plays in fostering a positive match day environment for all participants, including umpires.
While the majority channel this passion towards encouraging their team, there is still a concerning number of incidents involving abuse of umpires by players, coaches and supporters. This can be described as some as merely “white line fever” or “the heat of the game” but we cannot shy away from the impact it can have on our group, regardless of their age or experience.
Nobody sets out to make mistakes in a footy match, players don’t try to miss a target and umpires don’t set out to make decisional errors; this happens though as players and umpires are both human. Our ask this round, and moving forward, is that you continue to passionately support – or play for - your team but think twice before yelling across at an umpire: think about how you’d feel if yourself, a friend, or family member was on the receiving end of it.
Football in the VAFA will be better for it, enabling us to continue to recruit and retain the best umpires, to officiate the best community football competition in Victoria.
Call to Action
Lastly, as part of Community Umpiring Week, we invite VAFA Clubs to show their appreciation for umpires by players and coaches taking part in a pre-match guard of honour and handshake with umpires. We look forward to seeing all clubs acknowledging and thank the umpires who make it possible for our teams to run out each week. All the best to our highly valued umpires for Round 6 this weekend.

A weekend designed to sort the men from the boys
This is the biggest weekend of the William Buck Premier season to date. The top six sides will face off against one another, the bottom four sides will also do battle. Come five o’clock on Sunday night, we’ll have an idea of how the pecking order sits entering the mid-third of the season.
Round 6 opens with the rematch of the 2022 William Buck Premier Grand Final. St Kevin’s (1st) welcome Old Brighton (4th) to TH King Oval.
The reigning Premiers enter the clash on a 13-game winning streak. The Tonners suffered their first loss of the season to University Blues last weekend. The teams that will do battle this week will have a different look about them in comparison to the respective 22 that ran out on Grand Final Day 2022.
From the Round 5 side at SKOB, there were eight changes to the Premiership line up. Old Brighton had 11. And a coaching change.
St Kevin’s have claimed the points in the previous two meetings, and without the Tonners’ fearless leader Harry Hill this weekend, it’s going to be a tough task. After five weeks, Old Brighton have taken the mantle as the #1 defensive unit in the game (50 points per game).
Will they be able to stop Shaun Kennedy who’s kicked four goals, three weeks in a row?
Tune into RSN Xtra 2 from 1:00pm for the call of all the action.
The biggest rivalry in the VAFA is over at Camberwell Sports Park with Old Scotch (2nd) taking on Old Xaverians (5th). There’s no love-lost between these two sides.
Over the years the Cardinals have been toyed with by the red and black mafia. This will be the first time in a longtime they’ll enter the match as favourites. Currently just one loss in the opening five weeks.
Xav’s fell short to SKOB at Elsternwick Park and will be keen to get back on the winners list with the club celebrating their centenary season on Saturday night.
Head-to-head between these two, it has fallen significantly in favour of Old Xaverians since 2006. 26 wins, two losses. It’s been nine years since the Cardinals walked away winners in this battle.
Mark Gnatt has Old Scotch humming, I’m sure at the back of his mind he knows a scalp like this will go a long way in for the competition to really take notice of them.
At the other end of the table, Old Melburnians (9th) play host to University Blacks (7th) at Elsternwick Park.
The OM’s are in a world of hurt, they’re two wins from the previous nine matches were against Caulfield Grammarians and the now relegated St Bernard’s. Nothing worked at Harry Trott Oval on Saturday as they went down by 114 points.
To rub even more salt into the wounds, Charles Dowling, the club’s shining light in the forward line will be out for some time after a broken jaw.
University Blacks claimed their first win in William Buck Premier for the first time since 2017. The boys of the Uni had plenty to cheer about as it all came together against Caulfield. Joel Ernest and Campbell Moorfield have been rock solid in Dale Bower’s defence and will be on the hunt to make it two wins in a row, and push away from the relegation zone.
Old Haileybury (8th) were much improved last weekend after their disappointing performance against Collegians in Round 4. This weekend they’re off to Glen Huntly Oval to tackle Caulfield Grammarians (10th) who are in search of their first win under Guy McKenna.
ROUND 6 TIPS
Old Scotch v Old Xaverians
St Kevins v Old Brighton
Old Melburnians v University Blacks
Caulfield Grammarians v Old Haileybury
University Blues v Collegians
The last time Daniel Ward met Guy McKenna in the coaches box was the 2022 Premier B Preliminary Final when Old Haileybury met Beaumaris.
The Fields finished with six goals in the final quarter, Julian Dobosz kicked five for the day, they return home and will see this as a golden opportunity to come away with the four points.
Old Haileybury led Old Scotch at half time before falling away in the second half last week. This side has the cattle to mix it with the best when they’re on-song. But, be out of tune by a few percent, and the game can get away from you quicksmart.
The round will extend into Sunday this weekend with University Blues (6th) and Collegians (3rd) utilising an extra day’s rest after both putting up terrific victories.
Collegians produced the biggest win of the season (114 points), trumping themselves in Round 4. The last two weeks has seen the club kicked 44 goals, Dave Mirra with 15.
University Blues produced a win for the ages on Guy Martyn’s birthday. Heading out to Brighton without Tom Cutler, Sam Grimley, Jack Stephens and Dane Crognale.
It’s another rivalry that just bubbles away under the surface. The last three meetings have been decided by under a kick. Overall since 2006, Collegians 15 v Blues 8 and a draw.
The team that’s making footy fun to watch, against the team that has the stars of players we’ve enjoyed watching over the years. The King Kenny, and the Amazing Ayce. Dynamic Dave against Magnificent Marty.
All the action can be heard on RSN Xtra 2 from 1:00 PM.
Should the results go the way of the favourites, we could find ourselves with a very clear divide heading into the middle part of the season.
But, as we know, nothing is certain and anything can happen on any given day. Bring on the weekend.

Kew go top, while Old Scotch once again prove they’re the real deal
After knocking off SKOB in impressive fashion last week, Old Scotch proved that it wasn’t a one-off performance, backing it up again this week against Caulfield Grammarians. Scotch have now played two of the finalists from 2022 and will have another chance to prove themselves against first-placed and last years runner up Kew after the bye.
Elsewhere, Fitzroy failed to back up their first win of season and now sit bottom of the ladder, with Coburg close by. Here’s all the action from round five of William Buck Premier Women’s.
A win over West Brunswick now finds last year’s grand finalists, Kew, at the top of the ladder and they are mounting a strong case for finals. Whilst it was an extremely low scoring game, with only one point to each team after half time, and in the Magpies’ case, the whole game, both teams should be happy with their performances.
Although West Brunswick did not score a goal for the game, they would be impressed that they only allowed Kew to score eight points on them, making it one of their smaller losses for the season against a very strong side. For Kew, Ashlee Kate Bruce was their best, whilst Amelie Smith kicked their only goal. Kaitlyn Day was the Magpies’ best. Kew will come up against Coburg next week at home, whilst West Brunswick will host Caulfield Grammarians.
This loomed as the game of the round, and Old Scotch backed up last week’s win against SKOB with a strong win over Caufield Grammarians. Scotch are quickly emerging as a serious contender for this year’s flag, now sitting second on the ladder with only one loss.
Old Scotch held Caulfield goalless for the first half, whilst only allowing them to score one goal in the third quarter, compared to their 5.5. However, there would’ve been some nerves in the final quarter, as Caulfield scored three goals to Scotch’s 1.3.
Serena Kuo was impressive with two goals for Caulfield, whilst Courtney Gaze-Persson was their best. Lucy Morley also kicked two goals for Scotch, but it was Maxine Wells who was best on ground.
Caulfield Grammarians now find themselves in sixth place and will be hoping to return to their 2022 form, which saw them as one of the best teams in the competition, against West Brunswick next weekend. Meanwhile, Old Scotch will have a bye, before coming up against Kew in the following week.
After last week’s impressive win over Coburg, Fitzroy suffered an unfortunate defeat to Melbourne Uni, despite showing strong signs throughout the game. It was a tightly contested match for the first half, with Fitzroy winning the first quarter and Melbourne Uni only leading by eight points at half time.
However, the flood gates opened for Melbourne Uni in the third quarter, scoring 19 points to Fitzroy’s six. Fitzroy tried to mount a comeback in the last quarter, however fell short, with Melbourne Uni running out eventual 20-point winners. Whilst Fitzroy sit bottom of the ladder, this was one of their more impressive games for the season.
Erin Gogerly had two goals for Fitzroy, whilst Lucy Kerr also kicked one to be amongst the best players. Sunday Brisbane was their best player. For Melbourne Uni, Madison Katerelos and Georgina Gough were their best and both ended with a goal.
Next week looms as a tough week for Fitzroy, as they take on SKOB fresh off their bye. Meanwhile, Melbourne Uni will host Collegians.
Collegians are now third on the ladder after a dominant victory over Coburg, who slump to eighth on the ladder. Coburg were held goalless in the first quarter, however managed a goal each quarter after to score 19 points for the game.
It was a high scoring affair for the purple army, scoring 21 points in the first quarter, and kicking another twenty in the third quarter.
Georgia Harris and Paris Rafferty both scored two goals apiece, with Harris now leading Collegians’ goalkicking tally for the year. Maddison Shaw was their best. For Coburg, Lauren Collis was their best and she finished with a goal.
Next week, Coburg face another tough opponent in Kew and will travel to Victoria Park in the hopes of causing an upset. Collegians will play Melbourne Uni away.

Williamstown secure their first win of the season as Old Geelong continue to build
Picture perfect conditions greeted Melbourne with two teams remaining undefeated in Premier B, whilst Williamstown claimed their first victory of the season. Fitzroy and St Bernard’s kept the unbeaten streak rolling on and have continued to occupy the top placings on the ladder.
But first let’s start with the biggest win of the weekend with Williamstown punching through to defeat Monash Blues. It was always going to be a gritty afternoon for both sides, but Williamstown took control at each change and were able to put together a third quarter surge that saw them ultimately come away with the win. The game was dominated by Will Smyth who was sharp in front of the big sticks with six goals earning him a best on ground performance. Meanwhile Oskar Manton slotted three majors with Will Bokma also casting a strong showing during the game. Monash were kept in the game by Jake Meade and James Flett who booted three but for the Blues they remain winless alongside AJAX with the pair set to face each other in round 7.
Old Geelong was in the winner’s circle with their third win for the season by 24 points over AJAX. Old Geelong had a blistering start with seven first quarter goals, but AJAX restricted them to just two in the second quarter to cut the margin back to 22 points. The powerful start looked to be far too strong for Geelong with AJAX unable to level the contest and wrestle the scoring their way. Jordan Frew and Mickey Nicholls both kicked three for Geelong as they ended with nine individual goal kickers. Meanwhile Jack Anderson and Nicholas Dixon found the footy and were strong in amongst the contests. AJAX’s Ben Krongold provided service up forward with three goals with Max Herzel proving to be strong also.
In a tight low scoring affair, Beaumaris recorded a 13-point win over Trinity. It was a close encounter for much of the afternoon with scores level at quarter time before the Sharks pulled away in the second quarter with a half time lead of 19. The margin was cut back to 5 points at the final change, but the Sharks restricted the Trinity attack, keeping them to just one behind in the final quarter and pulling away for their fourth win of the season. Nicholas Plevritis and James Freeman kicked two each for the Sharks with Callum Linehan best on ground and Callum Heath strong in the ruck. James Ingpen and Oliver Scott provided some light for Trinity, but the Sharks proved too strong in the final quarter. It now leaves Trinity with just two wins from the first five rounds after coming down from Premier division.
Fitzroy produced another dominant performance out scoring De La Salle by 67 points. For Fitzroy, this was going to be a challenge but as they have done throughout the season, their football did the talking and the premiership points keep rolling in. De La Salle fought gallantly during the first half with the margin opening out to 26 points at the final change before the Roys blasted seven final quarter goals. Charlie Faubel is a name we’ve become familiar with, and he didn’t disappoint with three goals and a best on ground performance for the Roys. While for De La Salle Josh Cumberlidge stood strong and fought hard around the contest.
St Bernard’s finished off round 5 in style beating St Bedes/Mentone by 67 points. The Snowdogs led comfortably throughout the day and were in control at every break restricting the Tigers to seven goals for the match. There were nine individual goal kickers for the Snowdogs with Fergus McNicol leading the charge with four majors while Jeremy O’Sullivan kicked three. Ethan Schumann starred with a goal and was the best player for St Bernard’s.
Round six will see St Bernard’s take on Old Trinity out at the Snakepit as the Snowdogs celebrate their 60 th year in the VAFA. Unbelievably St Bernard’s played their first ever VAFA match against Old Trinity so it is fitting that on their anniversary celebrations they will do battle once again. Fitzroy will face AJAX as they look to continue their untouched streak, with Williamstown to play Old Geelong who are hitting some form. The final two games will see the Sharks up against a winless Monash Blues who desperately need a win while De La Salle to travel away to meet St Bedes/Mentone Tigers to conclude the round of football.

Blues with five-game winning streak after Round 5 of Premier B Women’s
The sun brought out a weekend filled with adrenaline, winning streaks, and incredible goals.
The Monash Blues are on a five-game winning streak after a victorious home match on the weekend against Aquinas OC. Within the first quarter, it was anyone’s game, but the Blues came out with great determination, and on this occasion, Aquinas could not keep up, with 12-points between the scores when the final siren sounded.
On an unsuccessful day trip for Aquinas, it was Cadhala Schmidli who stood out as their best player. Meg Dargan scored a goal with incredible accuracy, assisting her team in shortening the margin between the final scores.
Success could not have been achieved for the Blues, without the goal-kicking efforts Alice Peddle, Johannah Dallas and Molly Mcfarlane, as well as best-on-field Jacqueline Greer.
In round six, Aquinas will partake in a home match up against the noble North Brunswick and the Blues will do their best to protect their position in first place against the outstanding Old Yarra Cobras.
The St Bedes/Mentone Tigers had a triumphant outing to the home grounds of Richmond Central who were coming off a week with a bye.
Bedes came into the game with strength and determination maintaining confidence throughout the entirety of the match scoring a total of 11 goals and 10 behinds with Richmond unfortunately unable to bounce back, attaining one behind.
Laura Amelung, Alanah Strode and Elisa
Cantanzariti put on an outstanding goal-kicking performance with incredible accuracy, obtaining two goals each, alongside Bede’s best-on-field Olivia Steinfort. Can they make their way further up the ladder next round, up against the ladies from Brunswick?
With Richmond’s best, Laura Mckay, it is with hopes a win is in the near future as they come head-tohead with the mighty Mazenod next week.
Mazenod OC set off on a journey to Doncaster Reserve, the home of the Old Yarra Cobras
Unfortunately for the guests, playing in an unfamiliar environment did not prove helpful, but with goalscorer Charlotte Skinner and Mazenods best Mikaela Buccella, they may have better luck in next week’s round against the ruthless Richmond Central.
It was another week of success for the Cobras, with Illiana Zafiriou maintaining her goal-kicking consistency alongside Nicole Callinan, both scoring three goals each. Sitting second on the ladder, they will come head-to-head with Premier B Women’s top team, the mighty Monash Blues. Who will be on top after round six?
It was an exciting weekend for the suburb of Brunswick when Brunswick and North Brunswick met to partake in a battle, with the ladies in the purple and green reigning supreme.
With a 33-point-margin between final scores, Brunswick’s Larisa-Emanuela Dumitriu put on a bestplayer performance alongside goal-kicking machine Nolene Kingin who achieved a total of three goals. Can they keep up their incredible efforts next week up against the skilful St Bedes/Mentone tigers?
Still waiting for their first win is the best North Brunswick representative and goal kicker for round five, Megan Tsilemanis who will head to the home grounds of the accomplished Aquinas OC with hopes to finally experience triumph.
In the lead is the Cobras Illiana Zarfiriou who has accomplished an incredible 15 goals this season, followed by Molly Mcfarlane from the Blues on 8, Tahlia Limburg also from the Cobras on 7, Tigers player Laura Amelung on 6 and Brunswicks Nicole Kingi on 4.

Marcellin thrilling first win and another draw in Prem C
Round 5 of the Premier C Men’s competition brought with it a series of captivating matches, including a second consecutive draw, a grand final rematch, and a nail-biting two-point thriller.
At E.E. Gunn Reserve, Ormond and Marcellin clashed in a highly dramatic encounter that ended with Marcellin emerging as two-point victors as they recorded their first win of the season. The match seemed destined for an Ormond triumph after Tom Buckley’s late goal, which was his fifth for the day, to put them in the driver’s seat.
However, Josh Posar had other plans. With less than two minutes remaining and the crowd rallying against him, Posar marked the ball at the 50-metre line and confidently slotted a monstrous goal, snatching the lead back for Marcellin and securing their hard-fought victory. His exuberant celebration was a testament to the intensity of the moment.
The Premier C Men’s division witnessed its second draw in as many weeks as the Parkdale Vultures and Old Carey finished level with 106 points apiece. Despite trailing by a goal, Riley Thompson showcased nerves of steel by delivering a clutch goal for Old Carey, leveling the scores.
The final seconds were filled with high drama as both teams vied for that decisive advantage. Thompson, once again on the verge of becoming the hero, found himself open on the goal line with mere seconds remaining. However, just as he was about to mark the ball, the final siren blared, resulting in a draw, leaving both teams to reflect on what might have been.
The Grand Final rematch between Old Camberwell and PEGS proved to be an enthralling contest. Although PEGS appeared to have a commanding lead of more than five goals at three-quarter time, Old Camberwell mounted a late comeback in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to a solitary goal.
With the crowd on the edge of their seats, Camberwell had several missed opportunities that would have just about completed their remarkable resurgence. Yet, PEGS managed to seal the deal with a couple of late goals, securing a hard-fought 17-point victory.
Old Ivanhoe demonstrated their dominance by comprehensively defeating Mazenod, claiming their third win of the season and ascending to second place on the ladder. In contrast, Mazenod’s struggles persisted, suffering consecutive defeats by margins exceeding ten goals.
Following their bye week, the Hampton Rovers are set to return in Round 6, aiming to salvage their season as they face the undefeated PEGS. The Rovers will be eager to make a statement in what is their second home game of the season, against the formidable PEGS side and turn their fortunes around.
Round 6 has many exciting matchups to look forward to, one of which being the fourth placed Vultures taking on sixth placed Ormond in what will be a tight Friday night contest at E.E. Gunn.

George Garth Sets Games Record at St Bernards
St Bernards salute George Garth as he sets a new club record of 315 VAFA games this week.
George played in back-to-back U19 Premiership sides in 2002 and 2003. In 2004 George won the U19 Premier Best and Fairest and made his senior debut against Old Xavs before playing in the Seniors finals campaign.
A tough on-baller, continually taking on the VAFA’s best midfielders, George’s ‘hard at it’ approach earned the respect of team-mates and opponents alike.
With overseas travel, Covid and his fair share of injuries along the way it’s taken George a while to break the games record previously held by Andrew Nathan. Well done, George!

Oakleigh AFC – Tayla Bethune
“Our clubs’ Vice President Tayla Bethune is an ex player from Oakleigh.
Tayla’s energy and positivity has he lped her transition to player and then onto the general committee, and for the last two years as VP. Among other jobs on the committee, Tayla helps coordinate our clubs’ social events and, on the weekend, Tayla organised another successful Ladies Day function which was a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Australia.
It’s with contributions like Tayla’s that allows a community footy club to come together, thrive and succeed.
Thanks Tayla” - Oakleigh Secretary Craig Robinson
AJAX FC – Craig Joel & Peter Berkowitz
Craig joined AJAX Senior Football Club in 2014 and as well as being the Vice President since 2016, he is also the Team Manager of the Development Team since 2015. His sons Brandon and Andrew play with the senior club, which may be one of the reasons we are fortunate to have Craig on the committee. He is also a lover of fishing and classic cars.
A passionate football fan of both AJAX FC and Carlton FC, Peter has had a long journey at AJAX starting some 17 years ago assisting in the club’s Auskick program. He then moved up the ranks through to Juniors and his son Justin plays in the Senior Team. Peter joined the Senior Committee in 2016 and served as one of the Co-Vice Presidents up until end of 2021. Outside of the Club, Peter is CEO of Berkowitz Furniture, a furniture family!
Thank you to both Craig and Peter for their fantastic contributions to Ajax FC
Williamstown CYMS – Mick Buckley
Mick joined the Williamstown CYMS FC in 1972 and has been an everpresent figure for over 50 years! His penetrating kicks out of defence were prominent during the clubs 1972 and 1973 premierships and over 100 games.
After retiring from active play, Mick has selflessly given his time and expertise. His extensive volunteer service includes 15 years on the committee. His other roles have included football operations manager, team manager, ground manager, a goal umpire, boundary escort. In his own words, the only job he hasn’t done is boundary umpire.
Even after more than five decades of service, Mick spends much of his time at the club’s home ground, the Fearon, he diligently organizes and coordinates gear, equipment, and facilities. Moreover, Mick plays a crucial role in managing the club’s weekend volunteers, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

BCNA AWARENESS ROUND
The VAFA community came together last weekend as part of Play4BCNA Round. As such, VAFA clubs were encouraged to support the cause in any way they can, with some holding a Pink Sports Day, others wore some form of pink over the weekend, as the VAFA aimed to raise $30,000 for such an important cause.
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Ellen WilliamsThe VAFA congratulates Ellen Williams from Old Melburnians on receiving the Round 5 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nomination for her 2-goal best-on-ground performance against Macrellin on the weekend.
What the club said:
Ellen graduated from Loreto Mandeville last year and this is her first year at the club. As soon as she arrived in December for pre season her skills were on show! Ellen played Auskick growing up but stopped when she was 14 only picking up footy again this year.
Ellen is a very diligent and hard working player who gets to training early to work on her skills as well stay late. Happy to play anywhere on the ground and is very much a team player even giving away a certain goal in round 4 to try and get it to a player celebrating her 50th game (Izzy rankine-ward). Sign of a very good player is making those around them better and something she has in spades.
The Coach of the Old Melburnians Omelette’s, Yoxford Rous, said: “Ellen has fitted in seamlessly at the Old Melburnians demonstrating the values of hard work, selflessness and courage that the girls and boys have created at the club.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Blake PantasThe VAFA congratulates Blake Pantas from Elsternwick AFC, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 5. Pantas kicked a goal, and was named the best player on the ground in the Wickers 31 point win over Power House.
What the club said:
Senior coach Peter Higginbotham said: “Blake has made an impact on the club and competition that I’ve never seen in 30 years of senior football. He has come into the senior side, straight out of the under 19’s and his been crucial in the outcome of our games across the opening month of the season.
He has stamped his authority on the midfield early in his career, fighting against bigger bodies, he hits the scoreboard and is a regular in the backline fighting to regain possession.
He shows poise, and skill well beyond his years. Blake is a worthy recipient and a great person who gives his all for his club.”

Oakleigh Krushers end UHS-VU winning streak, whilst Glen Eira is flying at 5-0 and on top of the ladder
Oakleigh vs UHS-VU
Well, what a game...possibly so far, the game of the year as Krushers, knock off UHS for their first loss of 2023. UHS bursted out of the gates early with a quick four goals to one in the first term which set the foundation of the game.
Gun forward for the Krushers, Aaron Cloke, who was held goalless last week, was out to make a point hitting the scoreboard. Three pivotal goals that were essential to keep Oakleigh in the game. But UHS had Brandon Jackson who had a point to prove to not let Oakleigh take charge for the full game, producing a goal kicking display of 5 goals, to keep UHS in the game.
Furthermore, UHS were taking the Krushers to the sword as they managed to really set the foundation for the final quarter, kicking six goals that had a bit of a Collingwood feel to it as they were chasing down their score down... one goal, two goal and just fell short losing by seven points shattering hearts of UHS but jubilations of Oakleigh getting another win on the board.
Therry Penola vs Glen Eira
Another game that was looking to have a belter, the unbeaten Glen Eira up against the emerging Therry Penola who were looking to climb up the ranks. The game started a bit shaky for both teams, with scores at 10 to 5 at quarter time; the game was looking to be a close one.
Glen Eira then booted six goals in the second quarter with key forwards such as Johnston and McDonald looking to spice up the game. Key missed opportunities by Therry, would cost them dearly as being 3.10 at half time, was not sustainable to catch the Gryphons.
The game swiftly got away from the Lions, and they couldn’t catch up and so Glen Eira went on and won their fifth win for the season and continued their top of the ladder dominance.
Kew Bears vs West Brunswick
Are the Kew Bears back? They definitely look it at the present, winning yet another game making it three in a row against the Magpies. In front of a big crowd at Victoria Park in Kew, the Bears kicked off to a flyer booting four early goals and were looking the goods for the game.
George Smart and Matt Sharkey being key targets up forward kicking four and three goals respectively. The Magpies had Maxy Risstrom as a key player for them serving them well in the midfield.
But the Bears were able to grab the ascendancy, never giving up all day as they led the whole match. Bears slowly sneaking up the ladder where they are looking to get back into the finals race.
Preston vs Prahran
Preston took on Prahran at the W.R Ruthven Reserve. Prahran blasted out of the gates early, storming to a 10-goal to 1 lead at quarter time.
Simonetta was looking the goods for Prahran as he put on a goal kicking display, kicking six goals, well supported by his whole team with thirteen individual goal kickers demonstrating that it was a whole team performance.
Preston did have some contributions as it wasn’t all doom and gloom which was a good thing for Preston especially being a young side. Prahran did show the Division that they shouldn’t be under-appreciated as they booted twenty-five goals, and still look very much the goods as they maintain their dominance in 2023.
Ivanhoe vs Old Peninsula
Finally, the last game, Ivanhoe vs Old Peninsula took on each other at Ivanhoe Park. The game started well for the Pirates, coming early kicking six goals.
Stewart, Peacock, and Sanders who all combined for 12 goals between them, Stewart kicking five goals which was handy for the pirates as they took a good lead at three quarter time. Ivanhoe had handy contributors with Nick Vines booting four goals, a sure highlight for the day.
Old Peninsula coming away with a good win, coming home with the four points. The Pirates have a big clash against the Bears next week at home which should be a belter.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S
Round 5 kicked off with a bang in Division 1 Women’s, with the two previously unbeaten sides, Beaumaris and Old Brighton meeting at Beaumaris Secondary College.
Both sides came into the game knowing the importance that it held, with top spot on the ladder up for grabs.
The game proved to be as exciting as expected, with both teams showing periods of dominance. When the final siren blew, it was Beaumaris who managed to run away with the points, defeating Old Brighton by four points.
With perfect weather conditions, goals were aplenty. Samantha Mclean and Daisy Lockart lead the way with three goals each, while Jasmine Shepherd and Lily Tait had two apiece.
Ashley Van Rooyen played an instrumental part in the Sharks win, supported by Sarah Collins and Mikala Clarke, whereas the Taits shone brightest for Old Brighton, with Lily Tait, Jasmine Tait and India Tait all featuring in the bests.
Old Brighton will look to get their revenge when they host Beaumaris in the final round of the season, in what will surely be an intriguing match.
The next match of the round saw Hampton Rovers get their second win of the season, defeating Old Geelong by 14 points at home.
Old Geelong fought hard but were not able to get reward for their efforts, kicking a total of 2.8 for the day.
In a team best performance, Natasha Morris slotted two majors for the Rovers, who now sit at 7th place on the ladder. Old Geelong sit second from the bottom and will be hoping for a win next week to get themselves out of the relegation zone.
Next up, Old Melburnians showed that they are not messing around in Division 1 with a convincing win over Marcellin OC. The Omelettes kicked 3.13 while keeping the Sheagles to just two behinds for the whole game.
Lucy Chesterfield and Georgia Dunlop were superb for Old Melburnians, supported by a strong effort up forward from Ellen Williams, who kicked two of their three majors.
While Old Melburnians should be full of confidence after winning their first two games in Division 1, they will need to work on their accuracy during the week if they hope to beat the ladder leaders, Beaumaris, next weekend.
Old Haileybury have lost their spot in the top four, after losing to Old Xaverians by three goals on Saturday. Whilst only down by 7 points at three quarter time, any hope of a comeback for Old Haileybury was quelled by a three goal haul for Old Xaverians in the fourth quarter.
The VAFA is looking for volunteer reporters to cover Divisions 2, 3 & 4 Women’s for the 2023 season. If you’re interested, please email media@vafa.com.au
Pulomaja Gardiyawasam impressed for Old Haileybury while Sophia Rothfield and Tahryn Mant were best for the winning side with two goals each.
Old Haileybury will look to get back on the winner’s list when they travel to Como Park next week to face Old Geelong.
The final match up saw Old Camberwell Grammarians kick the highest score of the round to topple Hawthorn AFC by 77 points,
Claire Murray was gallant in defeat, kicking the Hawks’ only goal, while Eloise Defina kicked a whopping 7 goals in a dominant display for Old Camberwell.

Upsets and nail-biting conquests, it’s all on the line
Ferndale Park saw a nail-biting conquest between St Mary’s Salesian and MHSOB ; the tension in the air was palpable and the fans, on the edges of their seats. The Unicorns shot away with a 16-point lead by the end of the first quarter, which turned into game of catchup for the Saints. Joel Mattiske and Lachlan Russell put their body on the line in a game of hard fought footy with the help of Liam Moulday (3 goals) and Montgomery Herbert-Morgan (2 goals) who maintained the pressure. But as the game prolonged, even with a blinder of a game from Jack Elliston (5 goals) asserting his dominance all over the field, Unicorns pressure only increased. Mitchell Wilson and Julian Eimutis maintained the heavy pressure throughout all four quarters giving rise to opportunities for key forwards.
Matthew Pereira broke the tally sheet with 8 goals responding quickly to any attempt for a Saints lead. Neck and neck in the final minutes, the Unicorns snag the victory with a single point to further their winning streak to three games. The Unicorns have proven to be resilient under pressure and have bounced back from a lacklustre start to a fiery mid-season. At this rate the Unicorns are indeed ones to watch.
South Melbourne Districts have caused an upset at Whitefriars College in a mesmerising display of footy, flair and wit. Whitefriars stormed the pitch with their chins high, Matthew Dickinson shifted to another gear with the help of superstar Marlon Simbolon. Nathan Sambevski and Lewis Mitchell have once more proven their flair with the footy. But the Swans refused to allow the Friars to play their classic brand.
From the first siren to the last the Swans controlled the corridor and refused to allow space for Friars key forwards. To keep Daniel Wood to 3 goals is a masterful display of defence which speaks to the skill of Wood himself. Callum Wilson put on a commanding display with the help of Breshan Jones and Jess Mildenhall. The Friars faced a fair bit of adversity being two rotations down at halfway, through to the third which was capitalised by Swans forwards; Jamie Brooker, Leigh Sfetkidis and Sam Bradford with 3 goals each. Even in the face of adversity, the Friars continued to knuckle down, however it was the Swans who outperformed in round five and are sure to bring the same heat to Aquinas in round six.
Pitcher Park was home to another upset as Bulleen Templestowe snagged a five-point victory over Parkside. The Devils, famous for their quick footy and tough ball gets on the inside have put on a show for fans since round two with a three-game winning streak, however the Bullants had other ideas on game day. The underdogs put on an effortless display; Ashwyn Mohandas, Daniel Banister and Tomas Abbey kept the crowd speechless with their pressure. Hungry for the footy they gave rise to Jack Cowell (4 Goals) and Billy Wilson (3 Goals) who’s accuracy won them the four points by the final siren.
Brunswick bounce back! Aquinas are a team to never underestimate, the style, fitness, and determination of Bloods footy has only improved from last year and are always ones to leave fans wide eyed. From the get-go, it was neck and neck, Aquinas goal, Brunwsick goal, to be responded by Aquinas again. All four quarters saw a high pressure and high intensity display of ball hungry footy that didn’t slow down for a single minute. Harrison Flack put it all on the line,
and with the help of Morrison-Story provided opportunity after opportunity to Harry Dwyer (4 Goals) and Daniel Mc Mahon (6 Goals) who refused to miss.
Brunswick had a few additions to develop their depth even further. Joey Gale played his first senior game and played his role down back exceptionally. Familiar faces Will McKenzie and Gus Ross stepped up to the plate putting on an outstanding performance once again. Hayden Parker rose to the occasion kicking three, not to mention Jonathon Haddad’s (2 Goals) drastic impact to all four quarters. A few structural changes and a couple of magnet moves in the last quarter gave a bit of spark to the squad, but it was a fairy-tale day for Jack Spencer who kicked the game winner to leave Brunwsick fans with their chins up and smiles wide.
Overall, Aquinas have put on another impressive display, but the indomitable Brunswick brand have stepped up to the challenge once again. Brunswick are going to leave nothing on the table against St Mary’s Salesian next week to rectify some wrongs in Division 1 a couple years ago.

The fifth round of Division 3 football did not disappoint with some electrifying matches played over the weekend with the underdogs putting up a good fight, but it was the top teams who came out on top.
The Wattle Park Animals put up a good fight, but in the end, the Hawthorn came out on top with a thrilling come-from-behind win. Wattle Park had all the momentum and were leading even with their inaccurate kicking.
But the Hawks managed to find their feet and their goal-kicking boots, scoring 5 goals in the final quarter to secure the win. It was a tough loss for the Animals, who only managed to score 4 behinds in the final quarter. Justin Raiti was the standout player for the Hawks, continuing to push his claims as one of the best in division three this season.
Swinburne University had a tough task ahead of them as they faced off against Canterbury, who have only lost one game this season.
Although Swinburne started strong and kept it close in the first quarter, Canterbury eventually got their act together and took control of the game. The Cobras ran away with it and Tom Lowden kept his spot atop the goal-kicking table for another week. Jayden Cutts also had a career-best game for the Cobras.
Powerhouse is a team that I just want to see do well, but they had a tough game against the cream of the crop, Elsternwick
It was a hard-fought battle, with Elsternwick pulling away early before Powerhouse struck back in the second quarter to take a one-point lead at halftime. However, the premiership quarter belonged to Elsternwick, who piled on 5 goals to break the game open and secure the win. Matt Harvey was the star player for Elsternwick, putting together a handy game off the backline to steer his side to victory.
La Trobe University faced off against Richmond Central at the famous Kevin Bartlett Reserve, and it was a season-shaping victory for Richmond.
La Trobe got off to a good start but faltered in the second quarter, only managing to score 1 point. Richmond took advantage of their home ground and turned up the heat in the second half, eventually winning comfortably. With this win, Richmond now has 2 wins and 3 losses, while La Trobe only has one win on the season.

Unbeaten streak continues for Bulls as St Johns triumph under lights
The first match of the round saw the undefeated North Brunswick take on the always-gallant Box Hill North
The first quarter saw a hard-fought but low-scoring 30 minutes from both sides, but the Bulls were able to take a narrow lead of 8 points at the first break. The second quarter saw the Bulls get a bit more separation from the Demons with a 4-goal quarter, extending their lead to 24 points in the process.
A third quarter fightback from the Demons put them back in the game, kicking 4 goals of their own. The Bulls did remain competitive with 2 goals of their own, maintain a 13-point lead heading into the final term. With the match to be won by whoever took the opportunity, both teams fought hard in the final quarter, but it was the Bulls who held a 3-goal to 2 advantage for the quarter to win another close game, this time by 18 points.
The best for the Bulls included Samuel Watt, Zac Dicianni and Jack Clapton. The best for the Demons were Timothy Stanghi, Carl Sieger and Kyle Hocking. Multiple goalkickers for the Bulls were James Miralles Lombardo and Jacob Cornejo who both kicked 2 goals. The Demons had 2 players with multiple goals in Blake Williams (3) and Kyle Hocking (2). The Bulls will look to continue their winning ways as they host Albert Park. Box Hill North will look to get back into the winners’ column as they face Eley Park.
The second match of the round saw Masala look to take their winning streak to 3 whilst Eley Park were after their first win against a tough opposition. The Tigers got off to a dream start with 5 goals whilst keeping the Sharks to a single goal to take a 30-point lead at the first break. The Sharks started to put in work during the second quarter as they were able to kick 3 goals, whilst keeping Masala to only 3 goals, thus maintaining a margin of 30 points heading into the major break.
Masala then put together a big third quarter with 8 goals, however, the Sharks remained competitive with 5 goals of their own. The mammoth quarter by Masala saw the lead extended to 46 points. The Tigers were able to keep the Sharks away kicking 5 goals to the Sharks’ 3 for the final quarter. In the end, it was the Tigers that ran out winners by 54 points in an incredibly high-scoring game, holding onto their second spot on the ladder. Eley Park however will leave with their highest score of the season which will be a confidence booster.
Among the best for Masala were Sean Downes, Brandon Kelly and Deakin Harris. The best for the Sharks were Jacob Rose, Andrew Yeo and Tom Johnston. Masala’s goal kickers included Sean Downes (6), Brandon Kelly (4) and Luke Broomhall (3). Tom Johnston stood up in front of goals for the Sharks with 6 majors. Other multiple-goal kickers for the Sharks were Zachary Hayes and Aaron Williams who both kicked 2 goals. Masala will look to get another big win as they face rivals St Johns whilst Eley Park will look to take their ability to hit the scoreboard into their clash against Box Hill North.
The final match of the round saw St Johns take on Albert Park in what was the division’s first night game of the year. Both teams got off to a slow and cautious start with the JOCS kicking a single goal and the Falcons kicking 2 goals to take a 6-point lead into the first break. In the second quarter, the JOCS quickly took the game onto their terms, booting 4-goals to 1, extending their lead to 15-points at the major break.
The third quarter was another low-scoring period of football with both teams only managing a goal each but with 7 scoring shots for the quarter, the Falcons were able to reduce the JOCS lead to 11 points. The final quarter saw both teams take their game to another level as both hit the scoreboard. The Falcons were able to kick 2 goals, however, it was the JOCS that were able to kick 3 goals, winning the match by 20 points in what was their best win of the season thus far.
The best for the JOCS were Corey Ely, Nicholas Terril and Ethan Hope and the best for the Falcons were Sam Lee, Paul Hutchins and Jack Lee. Benjamin Ayache led the way in front of goals for the JOCS with 4 goals. Other goal-kickers for the JOCS included Brendan Ash, Michael Horton and Matt Kirkpatrick. Reece French-Lightfoot kicked 2 majors for the Falcons. Other goal-kickers for the Falcons were Jack Aimes, Brett Tottenham and Sam Lee. St Johns will next host rivals Masala in what should be a big match for the JOCS. The Falcons will face another tough challenge as they face the undefeated North Brunswick.

MILESTONES
Emily Jane Johnson (Ivanhoe AFC)
Ivanhoe AFC congratulates foundation women’s team member Emily Jane Johnson on her 50 th game in Round 5 on May 13. A strong mark and accurate kick, EmJay has been one of the Ivies most prolific forwards since the team was founded in 2017. She ranked fourth on the Premier C sharpshooters table with 14 goals in 2021. A key member of the team that finished minor premiers in Division 1 in 2018, EmJay has always been a team player. She didn’t hesitate to volunteer for the club’s committee when it needed someone to look after merchandising in 2018. EmJay’s return to footy this season has been a real bonus for the Ivies. Her Round 3 game was among her finest, top scoring with four goals in a home win for the Ivies. We want more, number 4!
Sienna Costello (MCC FC)
There are moments in the development of any club that amount to a milestone, and one of them was reached today. MCC Football Club was founded in 2018 and Sienna Costello was one of the founding players. Sienna is the very first player to play 50 games for the club. She is not only a player for MCCFC, she was team vice-captain in 2022 when the club won its first Grand Final, and she is now also the Club Secretary. She has been one of the primary drivers amongst the players to building pride in our club both on and off the field.
Natalie Cappelletti (La Trobe University)
Congratulations to La Trobe’s Natalie Cappelletti on reaching 50 games! Nat first joined the ‘Trobers in 2017 and is in her 5th season after playing all but a couple of games in the Senior Women’s team. Nat has been known to zip up and down the wing and more recently sneaking goals up forward. This is a special milestone as Nat suffered a significant leg injury in 2019 and has worked tirelessly to overcome this injury and return to the field. Well done Nat on joining a select group of 16 ‘Trober women who have played 50 games in the red & black! 50
50
Harmoni Collins (Hampton Rovers)
The Hampton Rovers Football Club congratulates Harmoni Collins on becoming just the third player to reach 50 Rovers Senior Women’s games. Harmoni is a foundation player for the club, running out for the very first game of VAFA women’s footy back in 2017 under lights at the Boss, and continues to contribute to the Rovers who are now competing in division one.
Andy Bird (Glen Eira)
Congratulations ‘Birdy’ on playing 50 VAFA games. An U19s best and fairest winner, Birdy is playing some great football off half back. The elusive smooth mover is a terrific kick, and we look forward to him providing lace out service to our forwards for several years yet. All the best for your milestone game Birdy!
Ben Hart (Old Camberwell)
200
Ben Hart pulled on the Old Camberwell jumper for the 200 th time last Saturday at Gordon Barnard Oval. Joining the club in 2008 and playing U/19s, he returned in 2009 to Captain the team to a premiership, winning the Best on Ground award on Grand Final day. Along the journey he has won the club’s Senior Best & Fairest Award in 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2022. He was the winner of the Premier C League Best & Fairest in 2017. Ben captained the club from 2013 to 2018 and this is where his leadership skills come to the fore. Along with playing, he is transitioning into coaching, filling an on-ground Assistant Coaching role. Well played Ben, we look forward to celebrating the next milestone in your wonderful footy career.
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
