SEASON 2024 - May 18
Regrading Complete
I wish to begin this editorial by apologising to the Clubs and supporters of the teams involved in our Women’s Divisions, Men’s Thirds, and Holmesglen Under 19’s competitions, for the recent delays in the publication of ladders and fixtures.
We thank you all for your patience and understanding as our VAFA staff have worked tirelessly to deliver this information for you. I am pleased to confirm that the records are now accurate and available on the VAFA website.
I understand that no one wants to hear about the problems and just see the results, however it is a fact that this year has thrown up numerous additional challenges for our staff to navigate through in finalising the fixtures and ladders. By way of example, the new Play HQ system, which is not attuned to automatically transferring teams from one division to another in accordance with our VAFA rules, required significant manual work from our staff to get up to date.
The VAFA has a regrading policy in place which clearly states, “the purpose of regrading is to ensure that teams are graded into competitions where they are competitive and sustainable with any team winning matches by a considerable margin potentially regraded to a higher section and any team losing matches by a considerable margin potentially regraded to a lower section”.
The key focus for the VAFA is to ensure that we are protecting those teams that are constantly losing by large margins, as the risk of players leaving the team is obviously greater when they are experiencing heavy losses and not enjoying their football. Any player departure puts pressure on the team retaining its numbers to field a side each week, which then has a flow on effect to the vibrancy, activities and sometimes the sustainability of the Club.
Jason ReddickCEO2 home and 2 away games and provide a further game of evidence on their team performance.
In addition to recent match results, the VAFA analyses multiple sets of data to determine teams of concern, including, but not limited to: a club’s feedback on strength of their squad; player numbers; team history; age demographic; whether a single team or having multiple teams (eg. reserves, thirds); strength of opposition in Round 1 to 4; ability to score; average winning/losing margins; and average number of players used per game.
We don’t often get any pushback from Clubs whose teams are being regraded down a division. However, we often need to promote teams up a division to ensure a division has a sufficient number of teams to compete, or to provide an even number of teams and avoid unnecessary byes.
the purpose of regrading is to ensure that teams are graded into competitions where they are competitive and sustainable
Whilst historical data is useful, due to the composition of teams in these divisions changing significantly from year to year, the competitiveness of the team needs to be judged in the current year. This year, the VAFA extended our approach to regrading until 4 rounds of football had been completed (2023 regrading was undertaken after 3 rounds), to enable teams to ideally play
This is where we encounter the most angst, as Clubs are taken away from a potential premiership opportunity in a lower grade, to be a competitive but not necessarily a finals team in a higher division. Whilst this may seem unjust to the players seeking premiership glory, the decision is done to protect those teams in the lower grade that they have been, or would be, beating comprehensively.
The one constraint that sometimes hamstrings us to grade teams according to ability is when there is a club with multiple teams in the competition. In order to maintain the integrity of the competition and avoid any manipulated match results, we must refrain from putting two teams from one club in the same division, even though on performance they could be graded as such.
We understand that we will never please all the Clubs all the time in this regard, however it is an exercise that is important in producing more competitive divisions and retaining players in the competition.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
The Royboys make history in William Buck Premier Men’s
The ‘Roys have won their first Premier Men’s match in club history, headlining a fantastic Round 5 of action.
FITZROY hosted OLD MELBURNIANS in front of a healthy and raucous crowd at Brunswick Street Oval.
The bottom two teams on the ladder entering Round 5 put on an entertaining and spirited contest through 3-and-a-bit quarters – the Lions leading by 2 & 13 points at the first two changes, before OM’s threatened to take control with a 6-goal third quarter that saw them head to the three-quarter time break with a 6-point advantage.
When they conceded the first goal of the last term, the ‘Roys looked to be in trouble – but they were far from done. Led by 13 disposals, 7 marks and 7 goals from best afield Dane HARVEY, Fitzroy finished the stronger, kicking 5 goals in 13 minutes to send the home crowd into raptures.
The Kevin Murray Stand was rocking to its foundations as ‘We Are the Boys from Old Fitzroy’ rang out across Brunswick Street after the final siren confirmed Fitzroy’s first Premier Men’s victory on a day that no dyed-in-the-wool Lion will ever forget.
Travis RONALDSON (Fitzroy): “A great day for the club, registering our first ever win in A grade.
The most pleasing aspect of the performance was that when we were challenged by OMs in the third quarter, we responded and managed to kick away.
Our young group has shown great improvement over the first 5 rounds. Dane HARVEY presented really well across half forward, Charlie FAUBEL was busy and applied great pressure (24 disposals) and Max ELLIS was reliable as ever down back.”
Paul SATTERLEY (OMs): “Outplayed by a really spirited, wellsupported team who ran out the game stronger than we did. Harvey & Faubel - a real handful on the day - proved too good.
We have been in almost every game this year - just having some poor periods. Not far off stringing 4 quarters together.”
Reigning premiers COLLEGIANS held off a strong-finishing UNIVERSITY BLACKS at Harry Trott Oval to post their third straight win and jump up into the Top 4 for the first time this season.
A 5-goal second quarter saw the Lions lead by that margin at the major break and despite Blacks pushing hard in the second half, the 10-point final margin was the closest they managed to get.
Collegians shared the load up forward with 8 individual goalkickers –Dylan THOMAS their only multiple, with 2 - while Nick CARIS was the main focal point for Blacks, finishing with 4.
Jordie McKENZIE (Collegians): “It was a hard-fought win. We had a terrific second quarter in which we used our hands and kept speed on the ball. We were unable to capitalise on some good looks in the third quarter and credit to Blacks, they got themselves back in the game.
The boys hung on in a tense final term and it was great for this young group to stick it out and grind the win.
Richie ANDREW earned his debut and showed he was up to the level.
Jasper DAVY continues his terrific form and, along with the other back 6, held us in good stead.”
Dale BOWER (Uni Blacks): “We were beaten soundly in the second quarter by a team that was far more determined than us.
We fought harder in the second half, but the gap in the scoreboard was too big to close. Collegians deservedly took the 4 points.”
After suffering narrow back-to-back losses, OLD SCOTCH emphatically returned to the winners’ list with a thumping 50-point win over ST BERNARDS at the Snake Pit.
The Cardinals dominated territory most of the afternoon with sustained pressure that didn’t allow the Snowdogs’ time and space to get their offence rolling.
The margin was only 2 goals at half-time before Old Scotch hit top gear in the third, ramming on 5 goals to 1 to seize a 39-point lead at the final break, before cruising to a percentage-boosting win that sees them sit second on the ladder, while St Bernard’s tumble from fourth to seventh.
MARK GNATT (Old Scotch): “The +31 inside 50 entries for the match was a testament to our defensive structure behind the ball. Our backs and midfield set up really well and we were able to obtain repeat entries.
The forward pressure was up as well with 17 Forward 50 tackles, so we were able to play the game predominantly in our half.
Brodie EASTON continued his great start to the season (37 disposals and a goal) and was well supported by Ben HAYS (33 disposals) and Jack LIPSCOMBE (27 disposals) to name a few.
It was great to welcome another Under 19 player Lachie HARKER for his debut and he acquitted himself well.”
Steve ALESSIO (St Bernards): “Our depth was tested against a hardened Old Scotch that played some very impressive footy.
Full credit to our backline who did a great job under pressure all dayin particular Mick CAVEN (34 disposals) and Fergus McNICOL.
We’ll have to do better and find some form very quickly against Collegians next week.”
OLD BRIGHTON’s impressive start to 2024 keeps getting better – the Tonners now a perfect 5-0 after overpowering OLD XAVERIANS at Toorak Park.
The first quarter was a tight defensive struggle, with the visitors posting 2 goals to 1 before adding a further 3 goals to 1 in the second term to build a 20-point half-time lead.
Old Brighton ultimately broke the game open in the second half, booting 11 goals to 4 to power away to a 66-point win that maintains their one-game advantage at the top of the table.
Ranked #1 in Attack and #2 in Defence, they have strength across all zones and have firmly established themselves as early premiership favourites.
Marcel BRUIN (Old Brighton): “Super win against quality opposition and coach. We went into the game needing to match them at the contest and thought we were really strong throughout.
Team defense has been a focus and was really consistent and that gave us some good opportunities up forward.
Hamish DICK was again superb and got great reward for effort (4 goals) and Quintin MONTANARO has been fabulous having been given multiple roles for us this year.”
Dan DONATI (Old Xavs): “Really physical battle for both teams, played in good spirit and tough conditions at times. It was pretty tight for nearly three quarters, and we didn’t feel far away during that time. In the end, OB’s pressure and ball use eventually took over and they had a deserved win.
We’ve been building more connection each week with a pretty young side and new coaching staff. It’s expected to take some time. I’ve no doubt our best footy is still ahead of us - it’s a long season.”
The closest match of the round was a gripping contest at Melbourne Uni Oval as UNIVERSITY BLUES & ST KEVINS played out a 4-point thriller.
The Blues led by 9 and 11 points at the first two breaks, before SKOB –who had started with 2.11 – found their radar and got their nose in front with 4 goals to 2 in the third term. Angus HART’s second goal put the visitors in front at the 25-minute mark and they led by 3 points at the last change.
The final term balanced on a knife-edge. The Blues booted the first two goals to open up a 10-point lead at the 14-minute mark before SKOB responded superbly, with goals to Patrick KERR (his second) and Billy McGEE GALIMBERTI to hit the lead again 23 minutes in.
James STEWART’s fourth goal put the Blues back in front at the 31-minute mark, before KERR’s set-shot missed in the final seconds – Uni Blues surviving an epic contest that sees them join St Kevin’s at 3-and-2.
Guy MARTYN (Uni Blues): “Another high quality, close game with an amazing finish.
Probably our best win given the changes in personnel we’ve had over the past couple of weeks. We worked really hard for one another to try and slow down SKOB, whose ball movement can be lethal.
When picking our ‘best’ after the game, it was really tough to name individuals as it was a very balanced team effort which was very pleasing.”
Anthony LYNCH (St Kevin’s): “An incredible contest and I’m sure any neutral supporters would have loved the spectacle.
Both teams had experienced talent missing, but the future for both is very bright given the standard and ferocity of the game.
I’m super proud of our group and their ability to never give up. We fought until the very end, but in the end Blues’ ability to finish their opportunities was the difference.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
Lauren AtkinsonCoburg pipped at the post by fast finishing Collegians
Round 5 in the William Buck Premier Women’s competition consisted of mostly one-sided affairs, with one thrilling contest going right down to the wire between Coburg and Collegians.
The round kicked off bright and early at Victoria Park, where Kew hosted the Old Yarra Cobras, with both sides looking to bounce back after disappointing losses in Round 4.
It was another tough match up for Old Yarra who only managed to score once for the day, with a goal kicked by Clare Moody in the third quarter. The damage could have been far greater than the final margin of 26 points had Kew been more accurate in front of goals, with their 17 scoring shots converting to just 32 points.
Amelia Dawborn was best afield for Kew for a second consecutive week, finishing with two majors. For the Cobras, Mikayla Lee battled hard in her best game of the season so far, while Nicole Callinan continued her strong form.
Over at Righetti Oval, St Kevin’s refused to falter with a 53-point victory over Melbourne University Women’s. St Kevin’s have been slow starters the last few weeks and this match continued in that trend, with a tight battle in the first term, with just three points separating the two sides at the first break. However, St Kevin’s took control in the second term, outscoring MUW by 26 points.
Both teams tightened their defence in the second half, leading to a lower scoring affair, as St Kevin’s managed three goals for the half and Melbourne University scored just one behind.
It was the two Jessicas, Jessica Cox and Jessica Joyce, who impressed the most for St Kevin’s, while Ashleigh Summers (4 goals) and Kate Stanton (3 goals) were prolific up forward.
Brooke Randall, who has been in the votes every round this season, was the standout player for Melbourne University.
Meanwhile, ladder-leaders Old Scotch flexed their muscles against bottom-placed Monash Blues in a 70-point thrashing. Old Scotch bolted out of the blocks
with their best quarter of football so far this year, kicking forty points in the first term, while keeping the Blues scoreless.
Monash improved as the game went on but were ultimately only able to slow the Stars’ attack, not stop it, as Old Scotch continued to hit the scoreboard in each quarter. The final quarter was certainly something for Monash to be proud of, as they outscored Old Scotch by 2 points, making them the first team to beat Old Scotch in a quarter of football this year.
Eloise Defina was sensational for Old Scotch, kicking a remarkable five goals to jump to the top of the goal kicking tally, while Mietta Kendall proved a very handy addition in her first game for the Stars this year.
Monash were led by their Captain Alicia Myers, who continued her strong form with another best on performance, while Caitlin Linehan and Anna Purtill also competed well.
In the closest match of the round, Collegians came from behind to get over the line by just 4 points against Coburg. It was a tight tussle in the first half which resulted in a 5-point lead to Coburg at the main break. Coburg were able to extend their lead to a significant 21 points going into the final term, however, it was not enough, as Collegians stormed home with a five-goal last quarter to steal the win at Piranha Park.
Ada Chessor, Roxy Beuzeville and Freya Taylor all played crucial roles in the win for Collegians, while skipper Claire Cashman was a shining light on a disappointing day for Coburg.
Away from home, Caulfield Grammarians got back on the winners list with a well-rounded performance against West Brunswick. Caulfield got off to a good start, kicking three goals in the first, while West Brunswick only slotted one. The second term was the closest of the match, with each team scoring a single goal.
Caulfield overran West Brunswick in the second half, holding the Magpies to one behind, while scoring 28 points themselves to lead by 40 points at the final siren. Taylah Watson and Charlotte Carney were best of the
West, while Maggie Minchin and Ine Beerens led the way for Caulfield.
Round 6 of William Buck Premier threatens more lopsided results, with the top two sides set to face off against the bottom two sides.
To kick things off, Monash Blues will host St Kevin’s in what will be another tough match up for the Blues – can Monash use what they learnt from playing Old Scotch this week to help thwart St Kevin’s attacks, or will St Kevin’s assert themselves with another big win?
Next, Kew will travel to Piranha Park to take on Coburg, who will be hungry to get back on the winners list after falling to Collegians at the final hurdle. Meanwhile, Collegians will look to solidify their top four spot with a fourth win when they take on West Brunswick at McAlister Oval.
Old Yarra Cobras will host Caulfield Grammarians in a fiery battle, with the result likely to impact the ladder standings. Finally, Melbourne University will have the home ground advantage against Old Scotch, but it’s unlikely to provide enough of an edge to get them over the line against the undefeated Stars unit.

PREMIER B MEN’S
Paddy GrindlayOld Ivanhoe stun Beaumaris in final term thriller
Old Ivanhoe’s rapid acclimatisation to Premier B football has continued in Round 5, the ladder-leaders flipping a 26-point third quarter deficit into a stirring six-point victory over Beaumaris at Banksia Reserve.
With dependable backman Reed Jepsen absent and just one rotation on the bench from the early throes of third term, Old Ivanhoe coach Jarrod Gieschen was forced to adjust his squad’s structure, successfully coming up with a seven-goal-to-one run from the 18-minute mark of the third quarter to the 16-minute mark of the fourth.
Three last-quarter goals to Daniel Hughes and two to 18-year-old Archie Franklin helped Old Ivanhoe secure a famous victory, placing the reigning Premier C premiers one game clear in the top two with a 12.10 (82) to 12.4 (76) victory.
“To do what we did was pretty special for our group,” Gieschen said, with Nick Riddle, Sam Keogh and Max Whiteman all forced out of the match with hamstring injuries. Midfielder Billy Murphy (39 disposals, 11 clearances) was instrumental in the comeback victory - particularly in an “unbelievable” final quarter where he gathered 13 disposals, 4 inside 50s and 4 clearances.
“Billy played one of the better quarters you’ll ever see,” Gieschen said. “He willed us across the line. He was unbelievable.”
Spencer McLennan (32 disposals, 9 intercepts) impressed Beaumaris coach Josh Bourke, while Nate Dear bagged three majors. “We’re focusing on maintaining effort and hopefully getting some reward,” Bourke said.
De La Salle and Old Haileybury played out a thriller of their own at Waverley Oval, the momentum swinging wildly between two of Premier B’s most impressive squads.
A four-goal-to-one opening salvo from De La was met by a sixgoal-to-one response from Old Haileybury, who turned the screws further in the third term, leading by 40 points at the final break.
“Throughout that second and third quarter - it wasn’t so much the in-tight stuff, it was the spread,” said Nick Hyland, with Old Haileybury’s Brede Seccull, Josh Gasparini and Hugo Nosiara able to transition from the contest to the outside with relative ease.
Having been well beaten across the middle quarters, De La Salle responded remarkably, storming home, and doubling their 6.4 (40) three quarter time score in quick time - although Nick Hyland’s men fell just short, going down 13.5 (83) to 13.12 (90).
“Ultimately, we left ourselves too much to do,” said Hyland. “You can’t concede 11 goals to two through the middle quarters and expect to come out on top.” The coach threw caution to the wind at the final break, throwing Trent Shannon and Tom Docherty on-ball while defender Ryan O’Meara went forward, having had Old Haileybury’s Max Sinclair for company in a defensive forward role throughout the affair.
Despite coming up short, Hyland will be glad for the opportunity to test players in new roles, should he need to get creative later in the season.
After an 0-2 start to the season, Daniel Ward’s side has peeled off three consecutive wins and now sits atop a logjam of 3-2 teams in third position. Sam Loewe punted five goals - including the sealer - in what will be his last game of the season, the forward heading overseas for a work commitment. “That was a goingaway present for Sam,” said Ward. “He’s gone out with a fantastic performance.”
With positions in the top four already looking to be exceptionally hard to come by, taking a win from the trip to Waverely may be crucial comes finals time.
A five-goal run in the third term has secured Old Geelong its third win of the season, breaking free of a spirited St Bedes/ Mentone squad at Como Park. Despite being winless so far this year, the Tigers ensured Old Geelong didn’t have their own way early in the piece, going into half time with just a one-goal deficit.
Josh Cowan (39 disposals) was impressive and Sam Buck and Jack Ferraro (two goals apiece in the first half) gave Old Geelong coach Nathan Brown a bit to think about during the long break.
Having been out-marked up to half time, Old Geelong began to dominate in the air, racking up 30 marks (26 uncontested) in the third quarter to take control of the ground and establishing a 29-point gap at three quarter time that proved insurmountable for Brad Berry’s men. In the end, Old Geelong ran out 34-point winners, 17.12 (114) to 12.8 (80).
Nathan Brown gave credit to the young Tigers squad, while lauding the “crafty” Connor Dixon (17 disposals, 4 goals) and impressive midfielder Nick Freeman (27 disposals). “His ball use was really good…he’s a really impressive young kid.” The next three weeks loom as a key testing period for Old Geelong, with Old Trinity, Old Haileybury and Beaumaris ahead. “A real good challenge for us in Premier B to see where we’re at,” Brown said.
After an early break from the pack, Old Trinity has been pulled back to the ladder logjam that spans third down to seventh, unable to go with Old Camberwell’s second half acceleration at Gordon Barnard Reserve.
It’s a pleasing result for Anson Brownless’ side, who have graduated to Premier B with Old Ivanhoe this year and, like the Hoers, show no signs of struggling with promotion. Brownless’ chargers trailed by three points at the main break but booted six goals to three in the third term, before finishing the job with fivegoals-to-two in the fourth, running out 18.8 (116) to 12.11(83) winners.
“Just keep moving the footy quick” was the message for Old Camberwell, who had Harry Laukens (five goals) to kick to and exciting half back Lachie O’Neill to do the delivery job. It’s been a pre-season that’s focused on fitness and four-quarter consistency at Old Camberwell, with the knowledge that Premier B football will extract a higher toll.
Garnet Brennan rucked in the absence of stalwart Gus Milham, doing a manful job as part of an all-in approach from Old Camberwell. “They saw the results on Saturday - everyone does the little things, you get a result like that,” Brownless said.
For Donald McDonald, this week’s work on the track will likely focus on execution in the back half, with unforced turnovers hurting Old Trinity late. “That should give our players confidence - if we tighten up, we’re in the ball game,” he said. Jack Hindson, who has been tasked with playing a variety of roles this season, continues to excel while Hugo McGlashan was yet again dangerous.
Finally, lapses either side of quarter time cost Williamstown CYMS in its clash with Caulfield Grammarians at Glen Huntly Park, Guy McKenna’s side forcing itself into the top two with a 12.10 (82) to 6.13 (49) win.
The Grammarians’ dangerous forward line again proved to be a problem, Julian Dobosz enjoying a five-goal outing while Jasper Rouget added two of his own. McKenna praised the work of forwards coach Jono Nash, who has his front half humming with five rounds of the season in the book. “It was Jules (Dobosz) this week - two weeks ago it was Jasper Rouget,” McKenna said of his multi-pronged attack.
The Caulfield forwards play unselfishly, providing each other the space to contest in a one-on-one, which can be picked out by the likes of Oscar Roberts (28 disposals) and Sam McInerney (22 disposals). “Jules will get the best defender next week and someone else will bob up.”
Williamstown CYMS coach Con Terozglou has been able to focus his side on key areas of the contest but found “20 or 30 minutes of down-time” across the course of a game has cost the CYs.
“We believe that we’ve found the way to work through and be a bit more competitive…if that keeps improving, I think we’ll eventually break through,” he said. Liam Conway (29 disposals, 9 clearances) worked hard through the midfield for the visitors.
This Saturday, the CYs host Beaumaris while Caulfield Grammarians visit Old Haileybury in Caulfield South, Old Ivanhoe take on De La Salle at Chelsworth Park, Old Trinity will look to snap a two-game losing skid when it hosts Old Geelong and St Bedes/Mentone will play Old Camberwell.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S
Kylie LynchOld Xavs join Premier B and Williamstown can’t be tamed
Round 5 of the Women’s Prem B competition delivered a compelling narrative of competition and transformation. Following a regrading period, both team and individual brilliance illuminated the field, particularly with stellar goal-kicking performances, highlighting the league’s depth of talent and unwavering competitive spirit.
At its core, Williamstown CYMS maintained their flawless record, seizing victory against the previously undefeated Old Geelong in a highly anticipated match up. This clash not only showcased Williamstown’s resilience, but also reshaped the league’s hierarchy and was a testament to the strength of both teams, resulting in a close score line that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
Williamstown showcased their dominance in the first three quarters, with standout performances across the board, and in particular from Loren Mills, who kicked an impressive four goals and earned the title of best afield.
However, Old Geelong staged a remarkable comeback in the final quarter, demonstrating their resilience and determination by kicking three goals. Players such as Matilda Arthur proved instrumental in Old Geelong’s late surge, contributing three crucial goals.
Despite Old Geelong’s strong finish, Williamstown’s early lead proved insurmountable, securing them the victory with the score of 8.10 (58) to 5.12 (42).
Fitzroy clashed with Aquinas at their home ground in a thrilling encounter. Aquinas burst out of the gates with a dominant first quarter, converting three goals and holding Fitzroy to just one.
However, Fitzroy rallied in the middle stages, showcasing their resilience with three goals apiece in the first two quarters and adding two more in the final quarter to secure a hard-fought victory over Aquinas, with the final score 9.12 (66) to 5.1 (31).
Key performances for Fitzroy included Esther Boles’ impressive hat-trick of goals, supported by Madeline MacDonald-Young and Robyn Randell, who each kicked two goals. Esther and Robyn were also instrumental in Fitzroy’s success, earning recognition as among the best on the field, along with Amelie Lay, Tess Young, Georgina Bennett, and Mia Sutherland.
Aquinas demonstrated their depth with five different goal scorers, showcasing the competitive spirit and talent present in both teams. Amongst the best for Aquinas were Niamh Sanders, Sophie Braunthal, and Millie Edwards, with impressive performances.
Additionally, the promotion of Old Xaverians from Division 1 Women’s to Prem B Women’s injected new vigour into the division. Their match up against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers was a monumental clash for the round proving their mettle in the league.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers made an assertive start, slotting two goals in each of the first two quarters and holding Old Xaverians to just one goal.
Despite Old Xaverians mounting pressure with two goals in the third quarter, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers maintained their momentum, finishing the second half with three more goals and bringing the final score to 7.12 (54) to 3.4 (22).
However, Old Xaverians’ defensive prowess was undeniable, limiting St Bedes/Mentone Tigers to 12 behinds throughout the match.
Beaumaris had an impressive start over Westbourne Grammarians in the first half, scoring three goals and restricting Westbourne to just one.
However, the tides turned in the second half as Westbourne intensified their defensive efforts and kept Beaumaris scoreless for the remainder of the match, whilst adding a goal to their own tally.
Despite coming within a single goal at the final siren, the lead Beaumaris mounted early on was too great for Westbourne to chase down; Beaumaris walking away victorious, 3.5 (23) to 2.5 (17).
Round 6 of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition promises to deliver some significant matchups as teams vie for crucial points on the leader board.
Beaumaris will take on Aquinas at Banksia Reserve in what is expected to be an interesting matchup. Meanwhile, Westbourne Grammarians go head-to-head with St Bedes/Mentone in a matchup that will showcase the skill and determination of both sides.
Stalwarts Old Geelong square off against the newly elevated Old Xaverians, which will be a good opportunity for Old Xavs to showcase their talent against one of the competition’s top sides. Finally, Fitzroy faces off against the undefeated Williamstown CYMS in what is set to be a thrilling encounter between two strong opponents. Will Fitzroy be the team that knocks Williamstown CYMS off their undefeated perch?

PREMIER C MEN’S
Raj JohnstonA volatile top four with the only certainty being change
Round 5 presented many enticing matchups to the casual observer. And all these games indeed delivered on this expectation. Every match contained a different storyline with surprises, shocks, and implications aplenty throughout Premier C.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon hosted Oakleigh at Packer Park in a rematch of last year’s Division 1 Grand Final. At this early stage of the season, both teams would’ve been acutely aware that the winner of this contest would set themselves up well in the difficult task of avoiding becoming stuck towards the lower end of the ladder.
The Gryphons dominated the first half with several key players contributing to the positive score line, which saw them four goals up at the main break. Oakleigh had a strong third quarter with four goals late in this term.
Despite Oakleigh’s improvement in the premiership quarter, the Gryphons had a better final term and ended up winning by 23 points. Special mention to Oakleigh’s Luke Ashen who kicked five of their seven goals for the day.
PEGS had an incredible day out against the Monash Blues, returning home with a comfortable 120-point victory. Both teams came into this clash with just the one-win, so a sizeable victory of this nature was a surprise. It was an even contest in the first quarter with the Blues trailing by 9 points.
However, in the second quarter, the lid was off, as PEGS’ forward line dominated, kicking five goals, and keeping Monash scoreless. This explosiveness continued for the rest of the day as PEGS piled on a further sixteen goals to Monash’s four. Jack Fenner had a remarkable afternoon, booting eight majors for PEGS, whilst Jack Thomas, Jordan Storer and Jack Hooper were amongst the best players for the home side.
The first of the two top four contests saw the Parkdale Vultures defeat AJAX by 48 points in what marked AJAX’s first loss of the season. These two teams have proven their attacking style of play is successful throughout the first four weeks, so this match was certainly going to be interesting to see which of these two well-matched opponents would hold up defensively and prevail.
Ultimately, it was the Vultures day as they were simply the better side throughout each term, extending their lead at every break. If not for some of AJAX’s goals at late stages of the quarters, the margin could’ve read much worse. Max Phillips impressed with four goals for Parkdale, and the ever-reliable Richie Simon kicked three for AJAX who will be looking to bounce back next week.
The other of the top four clashes resulted in Old Carey coming from behind to defeat the Hampton Rovers by 12 points at Trevor Barker Oval. The game fluctuated with the Rovers having a positive first quarter whilst Old Carey bounced back in the second quarter.
Corey Jones kicked the first of the third term for the Rovers, using the breeze nicely to guide the ball through the posts with a long kick. Despite the best efforts of the Old Carey midfielders to send the ball forward, the sherrin kept finding its way into the hands of Hampton’s defenders, with the Rovers taking a narrow 3-point lead to three-quarter time.
Old Carey certainly responded in the final term, kicking a battery of goals in the late stages to collect the four points and make their presence in this section felt. Hampton’s accuracy cost them late in the game kicking just 1-4 in the final term.
Mazenod recorded their third win of the season with a 25-point victory over Marcellin. This was an important game for both sides with Mazenod wanting to remain in touch with the top four whilst Marcellin were searching for their second win of 2024.
Both teams showed good intent and fight in the first quarter with only one point separating them in Mazenod’s favour. At half-time, the margin was five points Mazenod’s way with both sides keeping each other accountable. However, the final half belonged to Mazenod who continued to build their lead at each break and keep Marcellin at bay. Hayden Boyce and Lachie Stewart starred for the home side, whilst James May and George Megas had impressive games for Marcellin.
The ladder is incredibly tight with each top four side sitting on 16-points. Any team can drop out of their position at a moment’s notice. Round 6’s matchups could certainly see some movement on the Premier C ladder.
Monash Blues host Parkdale Vultures at Frearson Reserve. Sitting on top of the ladder the Vultures will no doubt be favourites; however, the Blues know that the time is now to respond and turn their season around.
AJAX host the Hampton Rovers for the first time in an exciting top four clash. Both teams will be looking to rejoin the winners list.
Mazenod meet Glen Eira/Old McKinnon. The Gryphons are faring better than many expected and will be looking to challenge this firing Mazenod outfit.
Oakleigh host PEGS as they continue to search for their first win in Premier C for 2024, and Marcellin will meet the red-hot Old Carey in the Sunday timeslot.

Beaumaris’ AFL connection keeps growing
Exciting times for Beaumaris fans with Calsher Dear making his Hawthorn AFL debut against the Western Bulldogs in Round 9. Calsher played VAFA footy in 2023 with the Sharks’ Under 19 and Senior teams and his older brother Nate is in the Beaumaris senior side this season.
Calsher joined fellow ex-Sharks Jack Gunston, Jack Scrimshaw and Cam McKenzie (who all played juniors at Beaumaris) for his AFL debut – the 18-year-old booting two goals on an unforgettable day for his family, friends, and footy club mates. Calsher and his Hawk team-mates are amongst 14 AFL-listed players to have been in the club’s junior and/ or senior program at some stage, giving Sharks fans plenty of familiar faces to support at the top level.
Outstanding Contribution to Victorian Sport Award
Former University Blues Football Club President, Dr Peter Brukner OAM, has been announced as the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Contribution to Victorian Sport Award by Vicsport. The award is the most prestigious honour bestowed at the Victorian Sport Awards and is presented to an individual or organisation with outstanding achievement in, or contribution to, sport in VIC. Peter has by far exceeded these expectations with a 50-year-long service to the Uni Blues FC, as well as towards sports medicine, nutrition and volunteering spanning half a dozen sports and two Olympic campaigns.
3 Clubs achieve top 10 standings in the Toyota Good for Footy Raffle
Three VAFA clubs excel in Toyota’s Good for Footy Raffle Program, with Whitefriars FC, UHS-VU-AFC, and Preston Bullants AFC ranking in the top 10 nationwide. Their dedication and teamwork shine, driving them closer to fundraising goals. They’ve raised $3720, $3680, and $3225 respectively. Congratulations to these clubs, and let this success inspire others to join the Toyota Good for Footy Raffle.
BCNA round a pink success
Mother’s Day is a special weekend throughout the VAFA as clubs thank the Women who play a part in our association while also highlighting the work of BCNA by donating much needed funds to help support people impacted by Breast Cancer. Over the weekend various VAFA clubs held match day events to show their support of BCNA. This included Pink Lady Lunches, changes to playing uniforms including boots, jumpers, tin rattling, raffles, auctions, as well as a variety of other initiatives to raise much needed funds.

Sunday Hollingsworth (Beaumaris)
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Sunday Hollingsworth from Beaumaris FC who has been nominated as the Round 5 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Sunday comes from an elite sporting family where excellence runs in her veins, as has shown being listed in the best players for her side for a consecutive 3 weeks in a row in just her first ever season of football. What the Club said:
Sunday joined Beaumaris in the pre-season with little football history. Sunday loved playing school footy, but her training schedule as an elite trampolinist prevented from pursuing further, Sunday is both a State and National champion, having represented both Victoria and Australia in Trampoline and was team captain of the Australian team last year. Her trampolining background certainly helps with her balance and aerial work on the footy field.
Coach Darryl Behrendorff said, “Sunday should be immensely proud of her nomination for the VAFA Anytime Fitness Rising Star. It’s a testament to her exceptional character, talent, dedication, and positive impact she brings to the playing group. Her hard work and commitment to the game shine through in this recognition, and it’s well-deserved acknowledgement for her efforts. Congratulations to Sunday on this outstanding achievement!”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Dylan Pleban (PEGS)
The VAFA congratulates Dylan Pleban from PEGS FC, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 5. After earning a spot in the Senior side this season, Dylan has impressed with his clean hands and work around the contest, floating between the wing and midfield, with numerous performances earning him a spot in the best.
What the club said:
Dylan is a PEGS boy and one of our Under 19’s players who have debuted this year. Since debuting he hasn’t looked out of place. We didn’t do any favours in promoting Dylan to the senior team, it was entirely well-deserved. Surgery over summer limited his pre-season but his resilience to get back in the gym and do what he could has resulted in him building strength that has supported an adjustment to senior footy. Dylan started on the wing for us but we have gradually been seeding him through the midfield.
Whilst we want to win every game like every other club, it is also our responsibility to promote and develop our young guns like Dylan, who won our Under 19’s Best and Fairest last year. Dylans best football qualities are his clean hands, his toughness at the ball and being a great teammate but more importantly, Dylan is a great PEGS kid who is always motivated to get better and make the club better.

DIVISION 1 MEN’S
Liam ColeParkside win in a thriller as UHS-VU remain on top
Fast starts have given Prahran and Ormond big percentage boosting wins, as the Parkside Devils come from behind to steal the points away from the Old Peninsula Pirates.
Parkside came from behind to beat Old Peninsula in a two-point thriller. The Devils were behind for most of the game with Rick Frost’s side down by three goals at three quarter-time. The Pirates midfield was strong in the first three quarters as Kurt Thiele, Jake Lovett and Hugh Peacock provided great heat around the ball.
Meanwhile, it took until two and a half minutes left to go in the last quarter for the Devils to hit the front. Michael Romano was the best player on the ground kicking three game defining goals in the last quarter including the winner for the Devils. The in-form Michael Romano has kicked eight goals in two weeks.
Prahran had a comfortable win at home over the Preston Bullants by 70 points. Prahran’s intensity really set the tone early, winning multiple centre clearances which led to nine consecutive goals in the first quarter. When the match was there to be won Mackenzie Mayne and Shaun Chapman’s aggression was on show with the two dominating around the ground. Lack of possession and spread around the ground caused the Bullants to bring up their first goal only in the 20th minute of the second quarter by Liam McLeod.
Max Milward was exceptional in the Prahran’s forward line, offering elite pressure around the ball and was rewarded with five goals for the day. Midfielder Sean Calcedo helped the Preston Bullants lift in the second half, but it was too late. Prahran’s Matt Clifford is continuing his superb start to the season and UHS-VU will need to put some work into him next round.
UHS-VU remain undefeated as they got the win over Therry Penola by 38 points. It was a tight tussle in the first quarter with UHS-VU having a 14-point lead. UHS-VU lifted their pressure in the second half with
young players Matt Dimmatina and Noah Seiderman playing well. UHS-VU skipper Harrison Kennedy and Esubalew Ramsey proved too good in the midfield battle as they restricted the Lions to just two goals in the second half.
Meanwhile, debutant Mungo Couper-Johnston had a day out in the forward line kicking four goals for UHS-VU. There were plenty of positives for the Lions as Skipper Joel Costello battled hard in the midfield and Jack Ford did well down back keeping dangerous forward Brandon Jackson to just one goal.
Over at Ransford Oval Ormond got the points over West Brunswick by 100 points flat. The pressure from the Monders overwhelmed the Magpies from the very beginning as pressure forward Aidan Soria starred once again with four goals. Ormond’s forward line is becoming quite a threat to the competition with Lachlan Grnogorac and James Tsakonas kicking four each on the day to help put the Monders 64-points up at half-time.
Rapid ball movement from the Monder’s proved too strong to handle as they brought up the 150 for the second time this season. The Monder’s have scored 20 goals or more in the past three matches and are certainly cementing themselves into the top four with big percentage boosting wins.
The Kew Bears won a tight affair against the Old Yarra Cobras by 26 points. The Cobras started well in the midfield with the three first goals of the day but afterwards you couldn’t split the difference between the two sides. The largest margin of the game was only 18 points, and it took a strong last quarter from the Bears to put the Old Yarra Cobras at bay.
Bears forward Ned Waters starred with five goals as the Bears kicked five goals to three in the last. Old Yarra Cobras forward David Tokatliyan played well kicking the four goals, but they still are looking to find their first win of the season.
Round 6 has some huge matches for teams looking for a spot in the top four as two sides face off to get their first win on the board.
The Magpies play at home against the Old Yarra Cobras as both teams fight for the four points. The Magpies will be looking to learn from their recent defeat against Ormond and defend ball movement a lot better.
Prahran are looking to spoil the party for the undefeated UHS-VU side in which will be the biggest of the round at Brens Oval. The midfield battle will be intriguing as UHSVU will be looking to reduce the impact of key talls: Shaun Chapman and Skipper Rory Brodie.
The Pirates take on Therry Penola at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. The Pirates were unlucky to not get the win against the Devils on the weekend and will be fired up in a must win game for their finals hopes.
The Bears take on an in-form Parkside team at Victoria Park. The Bears will be focused on nullifying the impact of Michael Romano who clearly knows what to do in the big moments. The split between playing in the midfield and forward is working a treat as he’s kicked 11 goals for the season.
Ormond are back at home and are up against the Preston Bullants. The Preston Bullants will need to be switched on early against the Monders who have a dangerous forward and will punish if given enough opportunities.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S
Annie IrelandThe competition heats up as six sides become acquainted in a new look Div 1 Women’s
The Division 1 Women’s ladder is looking a little different after regrading shook up the competition, leaving just six competitive sides to do battle for that illustrious Premiership flag. The division said goodbye to Old Xaverians and the combine Old Camberwell/ AJAX and welcomed in the like of Collegians. Whilst it is Old Brighton who continue to lead the pack, Marcellin are looking to make a top 2 bid with a convincing win over the newly elevated Collegians side.
The Round kicked off at Elsternwick Park, the home of the VAFA and the home of Old Melburnians who hosted fellow south-east rivals Old Haileybury. It was a low scoring affair on an early Saturday morning, only indicative of the evenly matched nature of these two sides. A tight tussle makes for exciting football and in this matchup, every goal counted.
Old Melburnians kicked off their campaign early thanks to the likes of star player Clare Fraser who kicked the Omelettes two goals for the first quarter. She finished the match with further accolades, booting 3 goals and outright earning best on field recognition for her side. Old Haileybury responded with three of their own straight kicks in the opening term.
The Omelettes fought their way back into the contest to trail by just 1-point at half time. This was followed by a scoreless third quarter with everything to play for heading into the fourth.
Both sides were hungry for the four points and despite OM’s firing to take an early lead in the fourth quarter, it was Haileybury who turned the table in the dying minutes to steal the game by a mere 2 points.
One half of the Haileybury captain duo, Isabella Scaunich, led from the front for her side and was aptly in the best for the day finishing with a goal of her own. The ever consistent in front of goals, Serene Vudiniabola kicked 2 majors, and Ella Gown was once again best on for the winning side.
Parkdale Vultures had their work cut out for them coming up against the undefeated Old Brighton and their game plan was evidently to hit the scoreboard hard and early to give themselves a buffer. This attacking style of play saw the Vultures take a lead into the first break, but with 5 scoring shots to Brighton’s one, the lead reflected only 4 points.
Brighton came back in the second to get the game back on their terms with a 1.5 to nil quarter. Before the Tonners could settle into their lead, the Vultures swooped in to get their nose in front with a dominant premiership quarter, only from Brighton to come back over the top in the fourth to walk away 10-point victors. This back-and-forth tussle showed promise for the Vultures in their ability to compete with the top of the table and should give their young side confidence heading into Round 6.
Isabella Daddo had another stellar performance in the forward line for the second consecutive week kicking Parkdale’s only 3 goals for the game. At the other end, Lily Tait slotted 3 goals for the Tonners supported by Lucy Grant with 1, which ultimately made all the difference to the final score. The two leading goal kickers were deemed best afield alongside Round 2 Rising Star nominee, Shaedyn Aylen from Parkdale, and Shanelle Hodgkinson from Brighton.
In contrast to the close contests that defined the first two matches of the weekend, the clash of Marcellin and Collegians told a different story. The third Collegians Women’s team has been recently promoted after delivering a string of dominant performances. Their first match in Division 1 Women’s was always going to be a challenge coming up against new competition.
Collegians managed their sole score for the game in the first quarter thanks to a goal off the boot of Rising Star nominee, Isabella Allan. Unfortunately, that’s where the highlights ended for the Lions and a determined Marcellin outfit took off, with an onslaught of goals headed up by the ever-reliable Zoe Glascott.
Zoe kicked 7 goals for the afternoon, bolstering her well into top spot in the race for the competition’s leading goal kicker. Collegians struggled to defend the Marcellin rampage, succumbing to a 67-point defeat. This win propels Marcellin into third spot after five rounds.
Let’s take a look at what Round 6 has in store for the Division 1 Women’s competition. Old Haileybury will host Old Brighton at Princes Park after narrowly holding on in a 2-point victory over the weekend. Will Haileybury be the team to finally get the better of an undefeated Brighton side?
Collegians will face Parkdale Vultures at home, with both sides looking to bounce back after a loss. While over at Marcellin College, Old Melburnians will travel to take on Marcellin, where the Omelettes are looking to bank their second win of the season.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S
Jainarayan TiwariA week of surprising upsets and sensational comebacks in Division 2
The curtain falls on Round 5 of football in Division 2 Men’s with surprising upsets and thrilling close calls as the competition heats up. The top sides continue to dominate while others stage upsets and prevail in surprising victories.
Bulleen Templestowe defeated Aquinas by a narrow 8-point margin at the Ted Ajani Reserve. This match saw multiple lead changes, but it was Aquinas with their nose in front heading into the final term. The Bullants scored the only two majors for the quarter and it was a goal off the boot of Corey Shiels in the 18th minute of play of the fourth quarter that sealed the deal for the home side.
The Bullants were looking to get back on the winners list after going down to Hawthorn last round, and they did just that, in a Friday night footy victory over a formidable Aquinas side. Shiels finished the night with 2 crucial goals for Bulleen, whilst Garrison Asciak lead the scoring for Aquinas with 3 goals, but it still felt short in the end, in a relatively low scoring affair.
Bulleen Templestowe coach, Andrew Verga, said of the win, “The boys are playing with some tough character. We aren’t doing anything special. As a young side, we look forward to improving game by game.”
The match up that took place at Whitefriars College Oval proved to be another close encounter, where Whitefriars defeated South Melbourne Districts by 10 points. Both sides were hot out of the gates hitting the scoreboard aplenty in the opening term, with the Districts managing to hold a 4-point leader at the first break.
Both teams looked promising and created many chances. The Friars won the premiership quarter booting 4 goals to South Melbourne’s 2, giving them an 18-point lead as they headed down the home straight.
South Melbourne ventured at a comeback in the fourth quarter, but it was too late. Whitefriars’ Sam Kiseker kicked 7 goals, which skyrocketed the team’s confidence, and was ably supported by teammate Christian Feher in front of goals who kicked 3 goals of his own. South Melbourne’s Max Collier lead the goalkicking for his side, slotting 3 majors for the day.
Brunswick, the current leaders of Division 2, have consistently delivered exceptional performances this season, establishing themselves as the team to beat. Their latest triumph came against St Mary’s Salesian, whom they defeated by a commanding 24-point margin.
Initially leading by 2 points, St Mary’s seemed competitive, but Brunswick soon asserted their dominance, showcasing their superior abilities as a collective unit. Once they gained the lead, Brunswick ran away with it extending their lead at every chance, coming home victorious 96-72.
Once again, Hayden Parker, Brunswick’s standout player, dazzled spectators with his offensive prowess, slotting an impressive 6 goals. Despite Trent Ryan of St Mary’s putting up a valiant effort with 5 goals of his own, his side couldn’t tame the 5-goal onslaught from the Nobs in the final quarter. The young side of St Mary’s Salesian are still searching for their first victory in the competition.
At the Bennettswood Reserve, Wattle Park defeated Hawthorn in a thriller to disrupt their winning momentum. In a fairly evenly matched clash, both sides were able to get their hands on plenty of the footy and hit the scoreboard, making it quite an even tussle throughout.
Austin Bongart and Nathan Bird shone for their respective sides in front of the big sticks with 3 goals apiece. Whilst both forwards earned a spot in the best, Bailey Hunt was the best afield for the winning side, whilst Jeb Loxton led the way for the Hawks. The final scoreboard reflected a 7-point margin, Wattle Park taking home the chocolates, 84-77, propelling their side into third spot on the ladder.
Wattle Park coach, Glenn Hopkins, said after the game, “We wanted to shut down Hawthorn’s corridor and long kicking game. This was always going to be a tight, contested match.” Hopkins expressed that the Animals will look forward to maintaining their form in the upcoming game against MHSOB.
For the second consecutive week in Division 2 we are privy to a draw at none other than the home of the VAFA itself, Elsternwick Park. The hosts, Elsternwick went in as favourites but were evenly matched by a competitive MHSOB, who were looking to bounce back after a tough loss. Right up until the main break scores were close, with the Unicorns marginally ahead, only due to the inaccuracy of the Wickers on the scoreboard.
MHSOB motored in the third to propel themselves ahead by 20 points, largely thanks to an overall team effort with 9 individual goal scorers for their side. Alas, it wasn’t enough of a buffer to stop the 6-goal onslaught that was to come from the Wickers in the final term to get their side back into contention. At the final siren there were 36 deflated players scratching their heads, replaying those pivotal moments that potentially could’ve edged them ahead.
Elsternwick and MHSOB come away from Round 5 with 2 points each, which could prove handy as the season ticks on, in a competitive competition where the ladder is tight.Once again, Elsternwick’s vice-captain and star player, Spencer Hankin booted 7 goals, including 3 crucial goals in the fourth quarter.
As the league heads towards the sixth round, Whitefriars will want to ensure they stay within reach of the top four as they host the Hawks. The battle between St Mary’s Salesian and South Melbourne Districts will be exciting, as both sides are desperate for a win.
Meanwhile, Brunswick will be looking to continue their domination as they face Aquinas away. Elsternwick will host Bulleen Templestowe who also looks in splendid form, and Wattle Park will be eyeing a big win against the MHSOB at the Bennettswood Reserve.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S
Callum FarquharDiv 3’s top six split by just one game after a competitive Round 5
The Division 3 Senior competition is evenly poised after five rounds of footy, with just one game separating first to sixth on the ladder. Any team can push for a finals spot though, as competitive efforts from bottom sides indicate the tide could be turning.
Power House resumed where they had left off, romping home to the tune of an 89-point victory against Richmond Central. Power House were impressive defensively, keeping the Snakes to just three behinds at halftime. The Snakes could never constrict Power House’s scoring throughout the match, ultimately losing their home game 29-118.
Benjamin Circosta was impressive for Power House, kicking three goals and getting the nod for best on ground. Charlie Officer, Joseph Halloran and Rob Dyer were also among Power House’s best.
Richmond Central’s focus will go to their match against Albert Park next week, in a game that presents with serious loser-goes-home energy. A potential 1-4 start could have the Snakes finals chances on the ropes.
La Trobe University has survived a gutsy display from Chadstone, winning by just nine points. Chadstone, who have shown glimpses of quality throughout the season, brought their most consistent performance to the LTU Oval on Saturday.
A back-and-forth affair, the game was poised for an epic as La Trobe led by two points at the half. Ten minutes into the third quarter, the Synners snatched the lead, however a goal by Andrew Castles three minutes later swung the game back to La Trobe.
With a 14-point deficit at three-quarter-time, goals from Briaden Leong and James Veal roared Chadstone towards its first potential Senior win in eight years. However, La Trobe remained steadfast, as Tate Spiteri kicked the eventual sealer.
Lachlan Webb and Connor McCredden were best on for La Trobe as they sit solidly at 3-1 for the year.
Lachie Dowsett (4) and Ben Ogilvie (3) stuffed the stat sheet for Chadstone, combining for seven goals. A genuine opportunity beckons for the Synners to get on the board against Eley Park in Round 6.
Swinburne University continued their dominant form, crushing Eley Park by 109 points. A seven goal to one opening term set the tone for a dominant Swinburne display, as the Sharks couldn’t get a hold of the Razorbacks attack.
Eley Park had no match for the three-pronged forward line of the Razorbacks, as Nick Ferguson (7), Salvatore Amenta (5), and Jason Hawker (4), linked for 16 goals.
Aaron Williams, Matt Gallagher and Zac Hayes played defiantly for the Sharks, earning best on ground votes. Sehath Alwis also impressed in a Seniors debut.
In a blockbuster match, Swinburne will face its rival collegiate side La Trobe next week, aiming to stake its claim against old foe.
St John’s has claimed first on the ladder after an 87-point thumping of Box Hill North. The JOC’s burst out the gates early, however an 11-goal premiership quarter is what propelled them to another dominant win.
Michael Ashman kicked a bag of six, as Timothy Werner’s four placed him best on ground. St John’s now head into the bye with supreme confidence at 4-1, their only loss coming by a mere seven points.
Beau Parthenides, Joshua Hocking and Thomas Francis were best on for the Demons as they move to 0-5 for the season.
After kicking the first four goals of the game, Canterbury has toughed out a 15-point win over Albert Park. The Cobras struck the scoreboard quickly, leading 27-2 late in the first quarter.
However, a defiant Albert Park wrestled their way back into the contest. Three straight goals in the third term rewarded the Falcons with the lead, however Canterbury responded with four of their own.
Canterbury’s lead would become insurmountable for the Falcons, as the Cobras did enough to hold on for a gritty victory.
Falcons forward Jack Lee kicked five, joining Cambell Franceschi and Henry Olive in the best. Captain James Boarotto was best on for Canterbury, along with Mitch Szabo and Michael Topp.
Heading into Round 6, it’s impossible to choose the best upcoming match. There is season-defining significance in every game, with the potential for each one to come down to the final kick.
Eley Park open the round by hosting Chadstone in a game that will be played with desperation and a sense of pride. Chadstone are chomping at the bit for their first win, whilst the Sharks are determined to turn the corner after consecutive triple-figure defeats.
La Trobe face Swinburne in a matchup of esteemed rivalry. Not only is their history noteworthy, but the fact that both teams sit just a game off the top of the ladder highlights the magnitude of this match.
The magnitude of Round 6 doesn’t stop there though, as North Brunswick take on Power House. The two undefeated sides of Division 3, this match is impossible to predict. North Brunswick fresh off a bye, Power House in unstoppable form. This game will be cinema.
Richmond Central play Albert Park in a crucial do-or-die clash. Either club could slip to four losses and leave their finals chances hanging in the balance. Expect another game of high intensity and desperation.
Box Hill North travel to Canterbury to close out the round, as the Demons look to secure their first win against a tough Cobras outfit. St John’s have the bye in Round 6.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT
Joel KennedyOld Brighton make it six in a row, whilst Old Xaverians sneak home
Round 6 of the Holmesglen Under 19’s Premier Men’s competition delivered a handful of exciting games with close margins; from the winless De La going down to the wire against Old Xavs, to the top two sides doing battle for bragging rights.
Touted as the match of the round, it was Old Brighton who snuck past Old Scotch at Camberwell Sportsground on Saturday. The top of the table clash didn’t disappoint with a seesawing affair and the game had its expected streaks of brilliance.
Offering up a 14-point-deficit at quarter time, Old Brighton rallied to snatch the lead back at the half. With just 5 points in it heading into the final quarter, the stage was set for a fiery contest and with both sides in form, it was anyone’s game. The Tonners were all too good when it counted, racing home to a 12-point victory to make them the clear outlier at the top of the table.
It was Sebastian Watter, Oliver Aloi, Jonah Campigli, Oliver Goodger, Tommy Keyte and Flynn Bongiorno who led the way throughout the game for the travelling side, being named best afield. Whilst Jake Phillips and Finn Nankervis earned the recognition for Scotch.
Despite the loss, Old Scotch will draw confidence from the day, matching it with the premiership favourites for a large majority of the game. With the victory, the Brighton boys have extended their season winning streak to 6 and remain two games clear at the top of the ladder.
In a match up at Stradbroke Park that could have been a one-sided affair, De La Salle was able to match the strength of Old Xaverians in a back-and-forth tussle that saw Xavs prevail by just 9 points.
Entering the final quarter leading by 16 points, it looked almost certain that the winless De La Salle would register their first victory. If it weren’t for a last gasp effort from Old Xavs, they would have done just that. The Old Xaverians were clinical in the final minutes, kicking five goals to one. Thomas Gorman, Charlie Hall, and Xavier Austin were pivotal, whilst Charlie Christopher led the way down forward, slotting 3 majors.
For De La Salle, Mack Higginbotham and James Harper shone bright to put their side in with a fighting chance. De La will carry the belief in their ability to compete with the top teams into Round 7 as they search for their first four points.
On home turf at TH King Oval St Kevin’s outlasted Williamstown CYMS after an extremely slow start. Williamstown CYMS shot out of the blocks to start the game, kicking 3 goals and 5 behinds, settling into the first break with a handy 21-point buffer.
Challenged by the coaching staff at the quarter time address, it was St Kevin’s who responded by kicking a flurry of goals, whilst keeping their opponents to just a single major for the quarter. They entered the main break with a 5-point lead.
SKOB continued the trend, pulling away late in the contest to conclude the game as 27-point victors. Samuel Jones and Conor Lynch were influential for SKOB getting them back in the contest, with Hudson Lefoe, Jack Luscombe-Gluyas, and Samuel Mazza all
multiple goal kickers for the afternoon. At the other end, Jackson Daley was the only dual goal scorer for the CY’s, while Noah Hannaford was best on ground in his best performance of the season.
University Blues continued their excellent form, defeating Beaumaris by 33-points. Despite trailing late in the penultimate quarter, the Blues stormed home in a dominant display.
Uni Blues register their third win and are now building some required form, with the likes of Oliver Scalzo and Grant Walker delivering best on ground displays, ably led by Luca Di Lallo in front of goals, slotting 4 majors for the afternoon.
For Beaumaris, Flynn Groves, Carlos Reynolds, and Luka Pecer played solid roles in keeping their side competitive. The final score line of 93-60 does not accurately reflect the closeness of the contest, but all credit to the University Blues it signifies their ability to get the job done and motor home to victory.
Rounding out the weekend, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers narrowly edged out Caulfield Grammarians at home.
The contest was neck and neck all the way through to half time, with Caulfield narrowly ahead. The second half was a different story as St Bedes turned the table in their favour and Caulfield was challenged comprehensively to stay in it. The Tigers held a 14-point lead at the final siren to register their third win of the season.
Harry Shepherdson and Tommy Lomagno stood tall in the victory while Simon Taylor was prolific in front of goals. For the opposition it was Chris Pietsch who was named best afield, alongside James Hill and Jack Pinder, meanwhile Kayne Watt booted another 4 goals.
Looking ahead Old Brighton will open the Round 7 campaign when they host Old Xaverians at Brighton Beach Oval. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will travel just down the road to face off against their evenly matched neighbours in Beaumaris.
Over at Waverly Oval, De La Salle will be drawing on home ground advantage as well as their hunger to get a win on the board when they come up against Williamstown CYMS. Old Scotch and Caulfield Grammarians will do battle with both sides looking to get back on the winners list, while University Blues host St Kevin’s in a middle of the table clash.

MILESTONES
Harry Baker (La Trobe University)
50
Congratulations to La Trobe’s Harry Baker on reaching 50 games – Bakes first joined the ‘Trobers in 2014 playing with the Under 19’s for 2 seasons plus a couple of reserves games. He returned to La Trobe during the COVID-affected 2020-21 seasons before doing his ACL participating in a non-football sport in early 2022! During Harry’s time recovering from injury, he was an invaluable assistant coach, skills coach and runner for our Senior Women. As a small winger/half forward and sometimes onballer with great foot and hand skills and an ability to read the game Bakes has made his mark on the field while off field his wry smile and positive nature has endeared him to all at LTUFC. Well done Bakes on your 50 games in the red & black!
Brede Secull (Old Haileybury)
50
Brede is the sort of footballer you would love to go to war with. Not just for his physical presence but his horrid dad jokes and positive attitude. Brede is a born leader who loves his team mates like family and continues to give so much to the club he loves more than anything in the world. Brede has been around the Old Haileybury football club since he was 5 and now gets to enjoy having his own young family around the club. He is a strong, brut of a midfielder that has the ability to kick goals and a real side lifter. It is great to have him down at Princes Park finally after all of these years.
James Pearce (South Melbourne Districts)
50
A South Melbourne Blood through and through. Coming up through the juniors, JP has been a part of this club for years. 50 games is a big achievement, however JP is a big advocate that junior games should count to games tally so if you ask him this is his 132nd club game, but I’m sure this 50th is a nice consolation prize. He has played Thirds, Ressies and Seniors and changes positions to wherever he is required and plays that role like a natural. A smooth mover, JP plays with flair and does not back away from a challenge, constantly taking on blokes much bigger than him. He is a true clubman. Congrats on 50 Senior club games. 50
COACHING
Alix Kearney (South Melbourne Districts)
Alix has been a pillar at Souths since the start. From joining the inaugural team, to coaching whilst playing when we were in strife, to returning after time away to both support and play, Alix has been pivotal to the success and continuous growth of SMDFCs women’s team. An amazing teammate and coach, the only thing she’d love more is if we were beagles playing alongside her. Or if we were wearing hawks colours…maybe both! 49 Bloods games of Alix kicking snags, encouraging teammates, and chasing the opposition since beginning to play footy aged 20 - blazing the way for generations to come. Congratulations on your 50th game at SMDFC!
Deb Konopnicki (South Melbourne Districts)
Deb initially joined South Melbourne as a player in our inaugural side in 2017. In 2018, with the Bloods fielding two women’s teams, Deb was approached to become the reserves coach. After a difficult 2018, 2019 was the reserves year - making it to the finals but sadly falling short. Following the whirlwind that was 2020, Deb left the Bloods to pursue coaching and growth opportunities elsewhere. After a few years coaching with Caulfield Grammarians in the premier division, coaching at the St Kilda NGA, a development role with the Oakleigh Chargers, and numerous coach development sessions, Deb returned to South Melbourne for season 2023 with a background built to support our senior women’s side. The investment made into the players, the women’s team and the wider South Melbourne Districts Football Club is incredible, and we are so lucky to have Deb as a friend and as a coach. Congratulations on your 50-game milestone Deb!

Chantelle Warren (MUWFC)
Chantelle Warren will play her 100th career game for MUWFC this weekend in what will be the club’s 7th Pride Round. Chantelle played her first game for MUWFC in 2012 in the EDFL Youth Girls Competition. Since then, she has been a regular fixture at MUWFC. Chantelle has made a name for herself as a quick and high-pressure small forward, although she certainly does not look out of place running through the mids either! Chantelle has an in-depth knowledge of the game, the club and continues to show incredible leadership both on and off the field. MUWFC are so proud of Chantelle for reaching this milestone!
Tom Madden (St Bernards)
100
100
Best wishes to Tom Madden who chalks up his 100th VAFA game this week. A St Bernards junior Tom progressed through Calder Cannons and St Bernards Under 19’s footy before moving into open age ranks and making his senior debut in 2017. After a brief stint at East Keilor Tom made a welcome return to ‘the pit’ in 2021. A clever, skilled midfielder Tom played a key role in our 2023 Reserves premiership. Well done Tom!
Sam Critch (St Kevin’s)
This week, SKOB celebrates one of their greats, skipper Sam Critch on reaching 100 games for the club! Sam was recruited from Williamstown VFL and has been an integral part of the club since 2017. Sam has captained the seniors from 2021 and is one of only three players in our history to captain an A-grade premiership team (alongside current coach Anthony Lynch and former skipper Nick Wood).
Sam was runner up in the seniors Best & Fairest in both 2018 & 2019. He was selected in the VAFA State Rep side in 2017, 2018 & 2019 (vice/captain). He is a two-time A grade premiership player 2017 & 2022 (Captain).
Sam Hibbins (Collegians)
200
Sam has been a warrior for the Collegians football club. The thing that stands out for me about Sam, is his drive to win. He does everything to make himself and the team better. Sam drives the standards of the club on and off the field, through his voice and actions. Sam has won 2 club B&Fs, been captain for 5 years and is now a premiership captain. He has also represented the VAFA on 6 occasions wearing the Big V with pride. We hope Sam plays on for a few more years yet and has more to achieve but it’s time to stop and celebrate 200 games and congratulate Sam on what he has achieved to date.
James Paul (Old Haileybury)
200
James graduated from Haileybury in 2010 and immediately came to join Old Haileybury in the under 19s in 2011. James is the eldest son to arguably OH greatest ever player Roger Paul. James has been an integral part of the club over the past 13 years. His footballing resume over the journey has been decorated and includes: Captain of the club for 7 seasons, 3 x Best & Fairest, 2 x Premiership Captain, and VAFA representative. Most of all “Jim” is a much-loved teammate and friend who will go down as one of the club greats just like his father.
