The early season report card makes for great reading at St Kevin’s clamps in defence, they start and finish games in attack just as powerfully having not lost a first or final quarter this season outscoring opponents by 180 points in total.
Back in the latter years of my time at school, the first three terms were the window of focus (the home and away season), while term four resulted in weeks of celebration (finals time) culminating in the good that came from the year.
Paddy Kerr has kicked 16 goals for the season, while rising star nominee Jack Darmody (7), Daniel Aplin (6) and Luke Mahoney (5) have provided great support. Ruckman Angus Hart is ably supported through the midfield with Luke Winter, Cam Hodges and plenty of other contributors.
If we’re to break down the William Buck Premier season in the same way, then the conclusion of the round gone marks the end of term one. Although there’s no holidays to separate terms, this weekend marks the next block of games that will be most intriguing in the set up of the 2022 season on the way to the mid-season bye.
After the opening 6 rounds, maybe the competition will catch St Kevin’s and that will start this weekend at Toorak Park however again, like many formlines, it falls in their favour.
St Kevin’s opening term score - 6 wins, 0 losses 213.89% (Mark: A+)
Next 3 matches to the Queen’s Birthday bye: Old Xaverians (A), Old Brighton (A), Uni Blues (H)
The ladder leaders were given an opening round scare against Old Melburnians but since then haven’t put a foot wrong. Anthony “Plugger” Lynch has taken the reigns and continued the dominance they’ve displayed since the premiership year of 2017.
Old Brighton - 5 wins, 1 loss - 144.26% (A) Perhaps it was a bit too early to ask Brian Waldron if Greg Hutchison would be coach of the year after round 2 when the Tonners came from behind to beat Old Xavier at Toorak Park but it was a win that sent a message to the rest of the competition. And, running away from Collegians in the second half in round 6 with accurate kicking in front of goal further underlined their dominance.
For all the talk of drones at training, an 18-man press and strangling opposition at T H King Oval, it’s been proven that no one can penetrate the defensive unit which are conceding just 42 points per game. And, while they’ve tightened the

While Old Brighton at home is almost an impossible task, you would be hard-pressed to find any opposition that enjoys a day out by the bay. The conditions suit no one but the young, brash blue and red brigade. Like the ladder leaders, they’ve held opposition sides to 41.3 points per game at Brighton Beach Oval. There were pre-season questions around covering Nick Pavlou through the midfield, not a problem with Max Kennedy coming across from Ormond. How do you cover the significant injury to Lochie Filipovic? You ask Andrew Doyle and Deandre Olivier to shoulder the load. Harry Hill has added another string to his bow, going forward and kicking goals from stoppages. “Hutch” hasn’t been afraid to leave him one out in the goal square as the ace in the pack, which leaves a lot of small defenders very nervous. There’s a blemish to the record, the loss to Old Scotch where Mark Gnatt found a way through with his own young, brash crew. No doubt they learned plenty about themselves and will see that as one that got away. They head out to the Snakepit this weekend, this ground will hold no fears for them, a win this Saturday goes a long way to cementing themselves in the top 2 for the year.

The team that now resides at the home of the VAFA have started this year in a way that we’ve hoped and expected them to start in recent years. The two games they’ve lost - Round 1 to St Kevin’s by 8 points where they had their chances, and Round 5 to University Blues by 13 points. In both losses they’ve failed to get beyond 50 points. When OM’s win, they hit the scoreboard averaging 25 scoring shots per game. Goals come in bags from Sam Dunnell, Al Armstrong, Tom Baker and Jackson Paine. Three of their four wins have come against the bottom sides however the way they’ve gone about those victories would impress Paul Satterley. There’s a bold sign of maturity in the OM’s winning the games they’re “expected” to win. The moment of their year came in the form of a come from behind win against Xav’s at Toorak Park. It was early on in the season, that may be the moment the team refers back to when they’re in need of a spark, or moment of belief to give them the confidence they need to compete. Ed Nicholls has continued on his 2021 rising star winning season, supported every week by older brother Will. Daniel Coffield and Tom Baker (13 goals) are finding themselves at home in their new colours.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S Round 7 against Old Scotch is a historic moment for the club, football’s oldest rivals meet for the 100th time, it’s been four years since they last met, 11 years since the Cardinals last won. At Elsternwick Park, we’re expecting the home side to prevail in a game they’re “expected” to win. Next 3: Old Scotch (H), Collegians (A), Brighton (H) Old Xaverians - 3 wins, 3 losses - 118.23% (B-) This weekend could be the the one that turns that B- into a B+ or even an A. If the red and black army can overcome St Kevin’s while all won’t be completely forgotten with backto-back last minute losses it will certainly go a long way to putting the pre-season favourites back on track. The last fortnight has seen Xav’s average 27.5 scoring shots a game, and had it not been for inaccuracy vs. Collegians in Round 5, their percentage could be significantly greater. In the blink of an eye Brendan Goss is now watching on from the stands for the year with a season ending knee injury, and last week a bout of the flu swept through the club forcing 8 changes to be made.
Sam Grimley is keeping opposition coaches up at night averaging three goals a game so far, while Alex Fasolo prior to getting injured had kicked 3 or 4 goals in each game he’d played.
Continuing on the scoring theme, they have the ability to set games up strongly in first quarters (6 from 6 and +70 points) however opposition clubs have used second terms to chip away at the lead and crawl back into games (1 win R1 vs. St Bernard’s from 6 and -33 points). Coach James Byrne will be imploring his men to keep the foot on the throat at quarter time breaks from here on in.
Prior to this weekend they’ve only played twice at home. Three of their next four are at Melbourne Uni. If any team does know the season is a marathon, not a sprint, it’s Uni Blues and Guy Martyn, they will just be mindful of not hitting a wall before the home and away season is done. Next 3: Collegians (H), Old Xaverians (H), St Kevin’s (A)
Ed Delany has been a terrific find in a side flushed with talent playing the “Luke Jackson role”. While Jack Hewitt and Charlie McIsaac are having plenty of fun inside the forward 50 arc. It’s not all doom and gloom despite the 50% winning record and come Saturday at 5pm, a win against St Kevin’s will certainly give the ladder another shake, rattle and roll.
Old Scotch - 3 wins, 3 losses - 91.39% (B+) B+ always looks better than A- on the report card, although if anyone really knows, it’s the learned gentlemen from the Cardinals. What Mark Gnatt’s team has produced in their three victories has been terrific. An 8-goal final term against University Blues in the opening round, holding out a fast-finishing Brighton, and keeping the Snowdogs goalless in the first half at the Snakepit. The biggest area of concern from a scoring perspective is being blown out of the water in losses.
Next 3: St Kevin’s (H), Uni Blues (A), Old Trinity (H) University Blues - 3 wins, 3 losses - 109.95% (C+) With a new coach at the helm, perhaps we expected more from University Blues in the opening third of the season. The last two weeks it’s started to come together for Guy Martyn, beyond the fact he’s now opted for the pant selection over the shorts as his boundary line uniform.
They went a long-way to rectifying that against Old Xav’s, one side who has regularly bullied them. They may not have come away with the win, but they were plucky, feisty and showed a never-say-die attitude.
Sitting 1-3 after four rounds, again question marks came around the team gelling as a unit, slow starts and low scores. They have only kicked 100+ points in a game once since the 2019 Premiership. However, a scrappy victory over Old Melburnians, and a come-from-behind win over Caulfield Grammarians may be the turning point in this season for the Blues.
There’s an excitement around the youth coming through at the Cardinals. On average each week they field a side with 8-12 players under the age of 22, 13-16 players come from the school and under 19 program. They’re going into games with a nothing-to-lose mentality, every week is another opportunity to grow, and to learn. The next few weeks will set them up to push them out of any potential discussion of the bottom four and more pointed towards the top four. OM’s at Elsternwick this weekend is a different challenge, can they cause a boilover and rattle the cages of another top four side? Why not?
The inclusions of Marty Gleeson and Matt Crocker have been widely highlighted. However, bringing in Will Carrington (former Old Scotch) has been a stroke of genius without Ayce Cordy in the last fortnight starting in the ruck. Jeremy Goddard (former OM’s) is growing in confidence playing alongside his brother. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Next 3: Old Melburnians (A), Old Trinity (A), Caulfield (H) 4
Collegians - 3 wins, 3 losses - 90.25% (C+)
St Bernard’s - 1 win, 5 losses - 63.18% (E)
The purple army started 2022 in a blaze of glory winning their first three games of the year in convincing fashion. The last three weeks have brought about a thud to earth.
As much as my passion and enthusiasm for St Bernard’s comes through, it’s been a tough start for the Snowdogs. Round 1 saw them field the youngest side they’ve put out on the park in 15 years, last weekend against St Kevin’s it became the youngest side in over 20 years (with just one player over the age of 26).
Injuries have played a factor, being a young group, not a strong amount of depth coming through underneath. However, let’s note they’ve run into the ladder leaders at T H King oval, Old Xavs after three consecutive losses and second placed Old Brighton on the weekend who took until after half-time to overpower them. I’m giving them a C+ and a strong pass on the opening third of the year. Dave Mirra is among the best players in William Buck Premier, the return of weekly football for club great Sam Hibbins is terrific to see after a serious injury in 2021. Ed Greene has been a wonderful inclusion to the line-up, and we can’t forget Matt Warren down in defence or Josh Watson through the midfield. This weekend they face a side who they have owned in the last decade, University Blues. 12 wins from their last 17 matches by an average winning margin of 34 points. Jared Rivers can spoil the fun at Melbourne Uni this weekend which will set up a blockbuster under the Friday night lights at Harry Trott Oval against Old Melburnians in round 8.
The solitary victory came against Old Trinity at home. Around that, they’ve been beaten by Old Xav’s (4th), St Kevin’s (1st) and Old Melburnians (3rd) while this weekend face up against Old Brighton (2nd). While the strength of their opponents is noted, scoring has been a major concern for Paul Groves’ men averaging 48.3 points per game. The most disappointing game came against Old Scotch held goalless in the first half at home, an unwanted piece of history. The silver-linings have been the blooding of debutant’s, Lucas Edmonds, Zac Overman, Harry Adronacci, Mark Gregory amongst the names. I see this current group of players under the guidance of Grovesy, Bernie Dineen and Aasta O’Connor as being the core group for the next 5-8 years at St Bernard’s and the motto of short-term pain, for long-term gain should be plastered on the wall of the Snakepit. Next 3: Old Brighton (H), Caulfield (A), Collegians (H) Old Trinity - 1 win, 5 losses - 54.09% (E+)
Next 3: Uni Blues (A), Old Melburnians (H), St Bernard’s (A) Caulfield Grammarians - 1 win, 5 losses - 74.40% (D+) The Fields have had an “almost” start to the season. They almost had Old Melburnians had it not been for inaccuracy. They almost had Uni Blues last week had it not been for a 5 goal gale to the South Road end. What they have is a similar start to 2021 however this time around, they’ve had the rough end of the stick with injuries. And, injuries to key players - Declain Reilly, Jared Risol, Jono O’Rourke, Julian Dobosz, Sam Dorevitch, Will Edwards.
Jamie Cassidy-McNamara has all but officially wiped VAFA Media after pre-game interviews ahead of losses this year. He must have the same pre-game superstitions as the one coach they’ve overcome in Guy Martyn and follows that guise every week. The T’s have had a complete overhaul of the club from the President down in the last 12 months and like all clubs trying to stabilise, they’re finding it challenging. A victory over University Blues gave them confidence that on their day they can match it with the stronger sides in William Buck Premier. From an individual perspective, Sam Mason has had a great start to the year as has fellow midfielder Alex Emery. Harry Thompson has Stuey Lowe bucket hands when he’s not competing in the ruck, and Alex Polidoris is still as dangerous as any player around goal.
They will welcome the return of their inspirational captain this weekend against Old Trinity, a side the Fields had the better of in 2021. It’s been nearly a decade since the T’s last got hold of them. A win and a favourable fortnight for the Fields makes the gap between themselves an the bottom 2 obviously four points wider, but the percentage gap is worth a game and a half at the moment with the opportunity to extend it.
They’ve had just two home games in the first six, and have the opportunity to use the wide expanses of the Daley Oval this weekend to stretch Caulfield. The major area they would be looking to tighten up is down in defence, averaging 89.6 points per game kicked on them.
Next 3: Old Trinity (A), St Bernard’s (H), Old Scotch (A)
Next 3: Caulfield (H), Old Scotch (H), Old Xavier (A) History tells us that the two sides sitting 1-5 after Round 6 in 9th and 10th spot haven’t been able to get out of the bottom rungs of the ladder for the remainder of the year. And, while people say history is a great predictor of the future, who are we to subscribe and agree that it’s a foregone conclusion.

Williamstown nab themselves a come from behind victory St Bedes Mentone couldn’t keep their streak alive in round 6 conceding a 35-point loss to Fitzroy. The Tigers secured themselves a strong 3 goal lead in the first quarter with fantastic forward efforts from Zac Calves and Simon Richards. Fitzroy took advantage of the wind in the second quarter and headed into the halftime break 19-points in front. Christopher Mangoni and Noah Hughes fought hard to keep the Tigers in the game. Overall, the accuracy and resolve from Jack Hart and Luke Minahan, snagging themselves 3 goals each coupled with stellar run and carry from 200 gamer Ross Borland saw the Roys put the game to rest. Next week Fitzroy head home to Brunswick Street for their clash against Old Carey while St Bedes face De La Salle at Waverley Oval.
A fight between the front runners Beaumaris and Old Haileybury saw the Sharks come out on top while a lower order clash concerning AJAX and Old Carey fell in favour of the Jackers. Fitzroy overpowered St Bedes Mentone down at Brindisi Oval while Williamstown defeated De La Salle in an impressive last quarter comeback. Fresh off a bye and raring to go, Beaumaris pulled out all the stops, defeating Old Haileybury by 16 points. The Sharks asserted dominance at every stoppage with James Taylor and Callum Heath playing pivotal roles in Beaumaris’ pressure on the ball. An all-around team effort from the Sharks saw them stretch their lead as the game progressed, denying the Bloods any easy scoring opportunities. For Old Haileybury, Max Sievers and Joshua Gasparini earned themselves a spot in the best, displaying notable composure and precision with the footy. Looking to Round 7, Beaumaris will host AJAX at home while Old Haileybury have no time to waste as they face another top of the table opponent in the Uni Blacks.
Fearon Reserve played host to a close game between Williamstown and De La Salle. This battle had the lead change at each break with De La holding a comfortable 26-point margin heading into the final term. De La’s Hugh Nicholson and Harry Hawker were hungry for the ball in the middle with exceptional forward 50 control from Seb Filipovic and Trent Shannon. An incredible final quarter from CY saw Jack Walker and Thomas Johnstone step up to the plate. Nicholas Ebinger and Jack Noonan were instrumental all-day, securing themselves 5 and 6 goals respectively and ultimately, their team the 5-point victory. Williamstown will head onto the training track with their heads held high as they enter the bye in Round 7 and De La will look to recoup their losses against St Bedes Mentone.
AJAX hit the road this week to face Old Carey with hopes to continue their run of luck. The Jackers’ halfforward favourite, Toby Lipton saw no sign of wavering alongside the force of Benjamin Krongold in the centre. Despite determination from Wade Brusnahan and Jonathan Marsh, lockdown defence from Hutch Davis and Adam Caplan left the Panthers winless for another round. Max Thompson and Luca Anderson worked cohesively in Old Carey’s forward line, kicking 2 and 3 goals respectively. Next week AJAX will travel down to the Aquarium to face the Sharks, meanwhile, Old Carey will battle Fitzroy.

Day of frights as the heavyweights are challenged The top sides in Premier C prevailed in round six, but not before receiving one heck of a scare from less fancied opponents. At the other end of the ladder UHSVU travelled to Marcellin on Sunday and emerged with their first victory of the season.
would probably be close to leading the Ivanhoe best & fairest, and he enhanced his position here. Lachlan Buck was Monash’s only multiple goal kicker with two, with Macgregor Cameron and Jake Meade their best on the day.
Old Mentonians travelled to the home of the league leaders fresh from the bye, without fear and looking for a scalp. That the Hampton Rovers were able to withstand the challenge and emerge unscathed is a credit to both their skill and their resilience. The visitors opened the match kicking to the scoring end at which 18 of the games 21 goals were kicked and went to the first break with a 21-point advantage. The Rovers kicked three goals to one in the second term to reduce the half-time deficit to five, but the Panthers kicked the only two goals of the third quarter to leave Hampton with a hill to climb. Unbeaten sides though do not take the threat of defeat kindly, and after some carefully used words at three-quarter time focused the group that hill was attacked with gusto. Hampton Rovers, with the last seven majors of the match, turned a 22-point deficit into a 21-point win. Ben Marron topped the charts with three goals for Hampton, with Oscar Roberts and Anthony Folino amongst their best. Lucas Haig starred for the visitors with four goals, while Darcy Brown and Comrey Edgeworth worked their socks off all day.
The young and game Preston Bullants managed to make Old Geelong work hard for their 23-point halftime lead. But as has been the case in recent weeks, the legs gave out as the match continued, allowing the OG’s to post seven goals in the third quarter, and a whopping eleven in the last. The Bullants had no answer to Liam Higgins and best-on ground Joseph Griffiths, who posted six goals each, but the supply to the forward line was plentiful and well-delivered. Callum Welsh and Bailey Austin were particularly damaging and whilst Preston stuck at the task to kick eight goals of their own, they never seriously looked like denting the scoreboard, nor the resolve of Old Geelong. Alex Johnston and Ethan Lowe kicked two each for Preston, with Terry de Santis their best on the day. Mazenod had to come from behind at the final change against Parkdale, after controlling the first half. That they were able to withstand the charge speaks volumes for their toughness and grit, and their win sees them nestled nicely in second position on the ladder. Parkdale Vultures are now the only side in Premier C without a win, but you wouldn’t have known that in a blistering seven goal third term which turned a 34-point deficit into a seven-point advantage turning for home. Mazenod had to pull out all the stops, finishing efficiently with four goals from five shots for the last quarter, and whilst Parkdale also had five shots for the term the fact that they only kicked two told the tale of the tape. Mazenod had slightly better composure and won by three points. Mitchel D’Angelo and Brad Kovac kicked three each for the Nodders, with Jarryd Raffa a popular choice for best-on-ground. Josh Manning led the scorers for Parkdale with three, while Lloyd Bailey and Jarrod Peake were their best.
Old Ivanhoe drew level on competition points with Monash Blues after they led all day to take the points at Chelsworth Park. A six goal to one first term was the key to this encounter, and while the Blues battled hard all day, they could never bridge the gap. Ivanhoe led Monash by 23 at the half, their solid defensive efforts all over the ground thwarting any hope that Monash may have had of getting a run on, and Monash could get no closer at any stage before succumbing by 26 points at the finish. Luke Scuderi continued his good form in front of goal, with his three goals here giving him 22 for the season thus far. Daniel Stanford never stopped working whilst Sam Wilcox THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

UHS-VU travelled to Marcellin College thinking that they might just spring an upset over the locals and will have gained great belief from their first win of the season. After a scrappy first quarter both sides began to settle in the second, although goals remained hard to come by with defences generally on top. The visitors took a slender two-point advantage to the main break, and really broke the game open in the third stanza, their seven goal to one quarter establishing a 36-pont lead that Marcellin, for all their attacking intent, could never pull back. UHS-VU stayed resolute before the charge and held firm to score a meritorious 25-point victory. James McGee, Pat Brookes and Fraser Campbell kicked three goals each for the winners, with Todd Cracknell continuing his solid form. Jacob Fahey and Marcel Haj kicked two each for Marcellin, with Elliot Atwell named amongst the best.

A big day for Prahran Assumption It was a terrific day at Toorak Park on Saturday as Prahran Assumption’s reserves and seniors won by 61 and 65 points respectively over old rivals Therry Penola, whilst off the field, a large chunk of their 2011 premiership team gathered for their 11 year reunion. Later in the evening, the senior team of the decade for 2010-2019 was honoured. Well done to all involved in a magical Saturday for the club.

Former Ivies star Fede Frew to play AFLW Former Ivanhoe Amateurs onballer Fede Frew will be playing in Essendon’s inaugural AFLW team next season. The Bombers announced on May 13 that Fede is one of four players in their unbeaten VFLW team who are being offered AFLW contracts. Fede, 25, has enjoyed a standout season as a dynamic and dangerous small forward and is currently leading the competition’s goalkicking. She played 13 games for the Ivanhoe Ivies in Division 1 in 2018, earning the coaches award. After a pre-season at Ivanhoe, Fede was recruited onto Essendon’s VFLW list in early 2019, becoming the first Ivies player to graduate to a major league team. Fede told the Essendon FC website she was surprised to be given a chance to play AFLW. “I couldn’t believe it. I think I knew I could get there but I was so shocked,” she said. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was little to want to play footy. Now I am here it’s so surreal.” Everyone at Ivanhoe Park is thrilled by the news and wish Fede all the best in the next stage of her career.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Alessia Acquaro (Williamstown CYMS) The VAFA congratulates Alessia Acquaro from Williamstown CYMS on being awarded the round 6 Anytime Fitness Women’s rising star nomination. In her debut year with the club, Alessia kicked a goal as well as being named in the best on Friday night as they overcame Old Trinity by 31 points. What the club said: Les is a damaging long kick and a strong contested mark. Her ability and confidence to break a tackle and take the game on was a highlight of Alessia’s preseason. We’ve encouraged this aspect of her game and it was on full show for the home crowd under lights at the Fearon Reserve, her match winning goal securing our first win of the season and an exciting performance across half forward.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Will Green (Glen Eira) The VAFA congratulates Will Green from Glen Eira on being awarded the round 6 rising star nomination. Will is a product of the Gryphons partnership with Mckinnon Secondary College that see’s the club enter the U19s program as the Old Mckinnon/Glen Eira Gryphons, a team that Will currently captains. This partnership is paying dividends with successful starts to the under 19 year and the senior team in 2022. What the club said: Will is an incredibly talented and focused footballer who plays with maturity beyond his years. Currently 17 and undergoing year 12 at Mckinnon Secondary college. Will was earmarked for senior football early in the pre-season and it’s been fantastic to see him take the opportunity with both hands by making an immediate impact in the senior squad. He’s a big bodied versatile midfielder who can push out to a wing or across the half forward flank and has no problem finding the big sticks. Very strong standing over the ball and in the air. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
He has demonstrated incredible attack on the footy, brave 2-way running and polish that suggests he has been playing senior football for a lot longer than his 2 game senior footballing career. 12

Big scores and changing of the guard, Round 6 shaped the ladder like none other The first third of the season is done and dusted, and as said dust settles and reflecting on the weekend, it was the most consistent round of the season as some of the high flyers of the competition began to separate from the pack.
One of the more interesting games on paper however it didn’t eventuate in reality was between Oakleigh and Peninsula. These two teams finished within a spot of each other last year, and though Oakleigh has shown they have improved, it’s always curious to see by how much. Peninsula clearly came out strong, matching it with Oakleigh in the opening term, but sadly that would see the end of the closeness in this contest, only managing three majors after quarter time. For Oakleigh their impressive run of form continued, the accuracy and consistency of last year’s leading goal scorer Aaron Cloke just keeps elevating this team into a genuine contender, sitting third on the ladder based purely on percentage with a 5-1 record.
The biggest win of the round came from Ferndale Park, as the bottom of the table St Mary’s Selesian took on the ladder leaders PEGS. The game started like no other this season, with PEGS booting 13 majors in the first quarter to a scoreless St Mary’s, it became quite clear that this outing was going to be a percentage booster for the top of the ladder PEGS outfit. With five players booting over three goals each, PEGS ran amok through the midfield and managed to run out 164 point winners against the continued winless St Mary’s.
The battle of 5 vs. 7 on the ladder, Glen Eira looked to propel themselves into the top 4 and announce themselves as another contender facing Whitefriars, a team who at their best can threaten. I put a lot of heat on Whitefriars each week, however this is a week where I was burned, as the running and scoring of the Gryphons proved too much for the Friars. This game should have been blown out and won by significantly more, Glen Eira booting 11.19 to bring home a 48 point win. This victory gives the Gryphons a huge confidence boost for the risen Division 2 team, and if a little more accuracy had fallen their way could have given them a handy percentage boost, which will go a long way towards the back end of the year.
Prahran Assumption hosted Therry Penola at Toorak Park, the Lions were keen and hungry to build on the success of their first win. Early on it looked like the underdog story could keep its momentum with a two goal margin heading into the half. However, for a team like Prahran, with Matty Clifford in front of goal it became only a matter of time to gather their composure and keep Therry to one goal after halftime, running out as 67 point winners. For Therry Penola it’s encouraging to see them put two quarters together that seemed to be winning or near winning efforts, however that second half blowout will be something to think about and lament on over this week.

The final, most exciting and engaging game of the round was between two Eastern-suburb rivals in Old Camberwell and Kew. These two sides were at the top of the ladder at the conclusion of last year’s covid affected proceedings, but this year it’s been different. It started up all square with a good shootout early with neither team really being able to pull away and take control of the game – however, this would all change later in the piece as this Kew outfit ran away with it late to secure a big victory over a really struggling Old Camberwell team.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.
A percentage boosting weekend but 6 won’t go into 4 The top three sides in Division 2 are having their way with the rest of the competition in the opening third of the season. While the intrigue around fourth spot on the table will only heat up as we move into the colder months of 2022.
Matthew Young can hold his head up high after his performance as well as Jai Mudher (3 goals) and Sam Robertson who was named the best for the Bushrangers. The next assignment for Yarra, is out at Ted Ajani Reserve against Bulleen Templestowe. A ground that will hold fond memories from 12 months ago and they’ll be hoping for a repeat of that performance.
Old Paradians travelled out to Aquinas College, keen to respond after their one-goal performance in round 5, and respond they did. In the closest match of the round they held a 23 point lead at half time, and then were forced to hold on for dear life as Aquinas stormed back at them in the second half.
As has been said on the VAFA podcast, it’s a very different looking Bulleen Templestowe this year, for the second half on Saturday they served it up to the benchmark of Brunswick, both sides kicking six goals, however the slow start to the game is where it was ultimately lost.
A three quarter time lead of four points stayed that way when the final siren rang as both sides traded behinds in the last stanza. The victory pushes Old Parade up to sixth with a 3-3 record, while Aquinas falls out of the top 4. Josh Robertson (2) has hit the scoreboard in consecutive weeks for Aquinas, but it wasn’t enough to get them over the line on this occasion. While for Parade, Kyle Mahony kicked 2 and was amongst the best on the day.
A 45 point margin at half-time for the ladder leaders, saw both sides stay that distance apart for the rest of the afternoon. Kane Daly (3), Jonathon Haddad (3), and Thomas Wilson (3) were the focal points up forward for the purple and white army. While for the Ants, Anthony Nicholas Lucisano added another 4 goals to his season tally. He is averaging 3 goals a game and putting himself in the best every week. It wouldn’t be surprising if he is leading the best and fairest count after the first third of the year.
Round 7 pins Old Parade against the bottom placed Power House at Garvey Oval, a chance to consolidate this win by making it two in a row. For Aquinas, they’re facing off against a side who is taking it all before them this year, Ivanhoe AFC in a must watch clash.
The round belonged to the high-scorers in MHSOB and West Brunswick. It was a fine tune-up for the Magpies who this week will welcome cross-suburb rivals Brunswick to Ransford Oval in their annual Pride Game, they’ll be feeling very good about themselves after thumping Manningham Cobras to the tune of 134 points.
The Hoers are now on a four game winning streak after accounting for Yarra Old Grammarians by 32 points. Without Ash Close, Wayne Schulz and Scott Selwood, Ivanhoe AFC had to find a different way to goal and they found the answer in Vivian BlackmoreMoore (5) and Billy Drake (4), taking his season tally to 14. A 25 point half time lead expanded to 41 points with six goals to three in the third term and while the Bushrangers will be comfortable that they finished the game full of running, winning the final term, it won’t be enough to tick all the boxes for coach Craig Vozzo.

10 goals to one in the first half set up the victory, and then 15 to four in the second half announced to the rest of the competition they mean business. Luke Buckler and Stuart Henshall both kicked five for the Magpies with Michael Turnbull being named the best player on the ground. As well as picking up the four points, the win gives West Brunswick an additional 41% and puts them into fourth spot, the spot that Aquinas, Old Parade and themselves are vying for. Over at MHSOB, Ashan Wijayakumara (6) moved to equal top of the sharpshooters with Brunswick’s Thomas Wilson, he had support up forward with Hugh Radcliffe-Smith (5) and Julian Eimutis (4) as the Unicorns routed Power House by 97 points. It was a case of putting the foot down in the final term for the home side who sent home nine majors to four in the final term to give themselves their highest score for the season. They added another 16% to their total which keeps them breathing down the neck of Ivanhoe AFC in the push for a spot in the top two. While Power House are having a baptism of fire to start 2022, let’s sing the praises of Jeremy Hill (3 goals) who has consistently been in the best players, and amongst the goals. It’s tough to see where their first win of the year is going to come from, but footy is not always as predictable as we believe it to be, maybe this Saturday at Garvey Oval, it all comes together for them?

Top 4 tightens as the Hawks open their account In typical Melbourne fashion, VAFA footy experienced all four seasons in one day on the weekend as the rain came down early, but eventually cleared for the last half of Division 3 Men’s games.
Hawthorn have finally gotten on the board for 2022, with a thumping 140-point win over the Westbourne Grammarians at Westbourne Grammar. The Warriors started on the back foot immediately, with a 0-45 scoreline going into the first break, before they scored in the second quarter. But it wasn’t to be enough, with the Hawks arguably sealing the deal just before halftime, with a lead of 66 points. A 15-goal second half was ultimately just icing on the cake for the away side, who had 11 individual goalkickers. William Meehan (7), Darcy Johnston (5), Charlie Lee (3), Justin Raiti (2), Troy McMaster (2), James Southby (2), and Tom Rea (2) were Hawthorn’s multiple-goalscorers, but it was James Betlehem who took top honours. For the home side, Ali Eqbal (2) was once again their best in front of goal, while Jack Lishman (1) was their best overall.
Hawthorn finally registered their first win of the season, while Elsternwick and South Melbourne Districts find themselves in a similar position to last year, if but a division higher. A goalless first quarter to both teams ended with South Melbourne Districts downing Richmond Central at Kevin Bartlett Reserve by 33 points. It was tough going on the scoreboard until the third term, where the Bloods piled on six goals to zero to be well and truly up, taking a 36-point buffer into the final quarter. Despite a late rally with four goals late in the game, the Snakes lost out on the day. Jack Bilson (2) was the only one to kick multiple goals for the home side, with Benjamin Krieger, Justin Perillo, Jordan Miller, and Billy Browning-Briese their other goalkickers. Dylan Curnow was their best. For the away side, Jason Clifford (3), Oliver Dufficy (2), and Leigh Sfetkidis (2) starred up forward, with the former topping South Melbourne Districts’ best players list.
Division 3 Men’s appears to be a piece of cake for Elsternwick, who are still unbeaten after taking down Canterbury by 20 points at Canterbury Sportsground. It was a fairly even contest in the first quarter until a seven-goal second term gave the Cobras the potential to cause an upset. But a second half rally from the ladder leaders saw the Wickers cut back the deficit to just three points, before five majors in the final quarter sealed the deal. Daniel Marchese (4) and Julian Yeatman (4) were both excellent in front of goal for Elsternwick, while Matt Harvey took top honours. For Canterbury, John Nicolopoulos (3) continued his great form as Ryan Murray (2) and James Boarotto (2) rode shotgun, and Nick Szabo was his side’s best.
A spirited Emmaus St Leo’s side has ridded Pitcher Park of any bad energy from previous encounters, taking down Parkside by 32 points despite the home side getting an early lead. The Red Devils got the jump on the Animals in the first term, but a response in the second quarter saw the away side kick five goals from plenty of inside 50s to take an 11-point buffer into the main break. Michael Davis (2) and James Moran (2) saw plenty of the ball to be their side’s multiplegoalscorers, while Jacob Glare (1) earned best on ground honours. For Parkside, their leading goalkicker in Simon Mackie was kept to just one major, with Matthew Holden (1), William O’Neill-Shaw (1), and Jackson Hubbard (1) also getting on the board. Jack Hamilton was their best. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

North Brunswick return from their bye and welcome Elsternwick to Allard Park. The Wickers are yet to lose and will find a worthy opponent in the Bulls. Both Canterbury and Parkside will be looking for redemption after competitive games in round six still saw them both come away with losses. Pitcher Park is once again the destination. Richmond Central will travel to Rathmines Road Reserve to face a Hawthorn side intent on keeping the winning feeling alive after finally getting a mark in the win column, while the Snakes will be hoping to get back on the winner’s list. The Westbourne Grammarians face a tough task as they make the trek to Lindsay Hassett Oval to face South Melbourne Districts. Emmaus St Leo’s go into their bye off really good form after downing rivals Parkside in round six.

New contenders emerge as only one undefeated team remains As Swinburne take it all before them in Division 4, it’s not a foregone conclusion that it’s a one-horse race after round 6 of the season, each week a new contender has bobbed up leaving us with more questions than answers.
In the eyes of some, this match was set to be a walk in the park for the undefeated Swinburne as they faced the winless Box Hill North. However, Box Hill North surprised all and proved to be one of the toughest tests the Razorbacks have faced this year.
Masala hosted Albert Park in an important game with both clubs coming off major defeats and needing a win to stay in touch with the top four.
Swinburne started off strongly piling on 6 goals whilst keeping the Demons scoreless. The second quarter saw Box Hill kick three goals to two bringing the margin down to 35 points. The Demons continued the momentum after half-time kicking six goals while keeping the Razorbacks to two and the margin at 16 points with a quarter to play.
True to recent form, Masala were hot and spicy having a dominant first quarter which saw them kick 10 goals to the Falcons’ one. However, during the second quarter, the Falcons started to fly with seven unanswered goals to bring the margin from 59 points down to 10 at the main change.
The final quarter was a story of what could’ve been for the Demons with plenty of what-if moments, 2.7 to 2.1 in the final stanza saw Swinburne hold onto a 10 point lead at the final siren and kept their undefeated streak going.
Masala stood strong in defence during the third term to keep the Falcons goalless whilst adding three goals to increase the margin to 28 points. Albert Park managed to find a spark in the final quarter kicking four goals but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers answered every challenge with a goal of their own to finish 33 point winners.
Box Hill North’s Leon Desmond and Jordan Gasparini kept the Demons in the game with six goals between them. For the Razorbacks, it was Luke McManus who kicked three goals with teammates Aaron Gersch and Nicholas Coad kicking two goals each. Box Hill’s best included Beau Parthenides, Peter Cassidy-Marsh and Brandon Truong. The Razorbacks’ best were Lachlan Randello, Bradley Field and the previously mentioned Luke McManus.
For the Falcons, Alistair and Jack Lupo kicked 3 goals each whilst Reece French-Lightfoot and Sam Lee kicked 2. Masala shared the goals, with Zac Pahos, Andy Moore, Declan Fowler, Dale Gibb, Jana Kumaralingam and Sahil Grewal all kicking two goals each. The best for the Falcons included the previously mentioned goalkickers in addition to Justyn Kennewell and Taylor Brennan. For the Tigers, their best included Jake Dunkley and Matt & Luke Decarne.
In round 7, Swinburne will face possibly their toughest opponent to date as they take on a La Trobe side that will want to rebound off a narrow loss whilst Box Hill North take on Masala, a side they struggled against in 2021.
Masala now have a tough challenge ahead of them as they take on Box Hill North in search of their third win of the season. Albert Park will look to rebound as they face an Eley Park opposition fresh off the bye.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
La Trobe and St Johns was set to be the best game we’ve seen so far this season and the game delivered. It was the JOC’s that got off to the better start holding an eight point lead going into the quarter time.

La Trobe responded in the second and despite very inaccurate kicking put the game back on their terms and led by nine going into the major break. In the third quarter, both teams seemed to replicate their opposition’s second quarter as St Johns kicked ahead and took a five point lead, albeit with inaccurate kicking costing the JOC’s a chance at a bigger lead as they kicked 4.7 to La Trobe’s 2.2.

For the JOC’s, Rohan Scott led the way with three goals whilst Steven Sullivan kicked two. When it came to the best for La Trobe, Andy Castles, Patrick Lindsay and Jonty Randall led the way whilst St Johns’ best included Rohan Scott, Nicholas Terrill and Brendan Ash. MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Alistair Rogers (MHSOB)
50
Alistair Rogers is a hard-nosed midfielder and defender renowned for his ferocity at a contest and his tackling pressure, serving as the team’s on field barometer. He started his Unicorns journey in 2018 as part of the development squad that made a thirds grand final, followed by an U/19 preliminary final the following season. After no football in 2020, Alistair has worked his way through the development squad, reserves squad and recently, in round five, he made his senior debut against Bulleen-Templestowe. He has an exciting future ahead of him at MHSOBFC and we congratulate him on his 50 game milestone.
Brendan Cook (MHSOB)
100
Congratulations to Brendan Cook on reaching the 100 game milestone for the MHSOBFC. A Melbourne High School graduate, Cookie began his Unicorns journey playing U/19s in 2012 before moving into the reserves squad. Although making his senior debut in 2014, it was during 2017 that Cookie locked down his spot and became a mainstay in the senior squad. Playing forward, midfield and as a pinchhit ruckman, Brendan is a vital member of the team and crucial to our on-field success. The epitome of hard work, Cookie is a universally loved member of the club and we hope to see him pull on the green, maroon and black jumper for years to come.
Jake Meade (Monash Blues)
100
A huge congratulations to Jake Meade, who brings up his 100th game for the Monash Blues this weekend. Hailing from Gippsland, Jake burst onto the scene at the Ashes in 2014 with an afro to rival Guy Sebastian’s, quickly earning himself the nickname “Poodle” as a result. With a runners-up in the Senior BnF in his second year at the club, Poodle’s athleticism, hunt for the contest and ability to kick on both feet have shone through since day one. Known for his love of heavy metal, Jake’s teammates keep him away from the changeroom speakers pre-game. Off field, he has been a great contributor to the club over many years, willing to put his hand up for any task as required. Whilst he would now be considered a quiet achiever on the social front, Poodle’s more outgoing self has occasionally been let off the leash over the years, notably conducting social experiments regarding dinosaur preferences in his early days at the club. After injury plagued the middle part of Jake’s Monash career, (where an infection almost lost him his foot!), he has worked his way back to full fitness in recent times and is again a mainstay in the senior Back 6, earning a place in the Premier C Team of the Year for his efforts in 2021. Like all good backmen, Jake loves to sneak forward for a goal, and will certainly be looking to get on the end of one this weekend. Congrats again Poodle on your 100 game milestone for the Blues!

Josh Madden (St Bernards)
150
Congrats to Josh on his 150th. A St Bernards Junior, Josh played VFL for Essendon as an 18yo before becoming one of St Bernards ‘all time’ best players winning two Senior B&Fs (2005-6) Josh was runner up for the Woodrow Medal in 2005 and a regular VAFA Big V rep. Great to see Josh come back out of retirement this year to help out in the Thirds and chalk up his 150th game!
Richard Atkins (Hampton Rovers)
300
The Hampton Rovers Football Club congratulate Richard Atkins on playing his 300th club game versus Old Mentonians last week. “Axe” has spent his career at the Rovers, as a dynamic, agile half back flanker. He’s played majority of his juniors at the Rovers, then moving through the U19s winning a premiership in 2009. Richard played in the back-to-back flags of 2013-14 (D1-Prem C). He also spent some time at Sandringham in the VFL. Although having a ‘slow’ preseason, Axe is back in the senior team and is back to using that dangerous left foot. The club also congratulates Ryan Fogarty on bringing up his 100 th VAFA game milestone in Saturday’s win.

Kew hold on in nailbiter to hand St Kevin’s their first loss It was a top of the ladder clash in William Buck Premier Women’s between Kew and St Kevin’s and with St Kevin’s being the team to catch, it was always going to be a tough match up.
Coming off a narrow loss last week, Marcellin were out for redemption, while West Brunswick were looking to hold on to their top 4 spot that they claimed last week. West Brunswick were the commanding team early. Controlling the loose ball and keeping the pressure on Marcellin to defend. Despite the efforts it was Marcellin who hit the scoreboard early to take the lead. It was an intense game that saw the two teams battle it out with few scoring opportunities to be found.
It was a low scoring affair for the first quarter with both teams bringing their pressure and showing why they are sitting at the top of the ladder. It was tightly contested football all around and while St Kevin’s were able to make forward entries the Kew backline stood strong preventing scoring. Kew were the first team to score, and it didn’t take St Kevin’s long to get one back. Kew had the control of the play for much of the second quarter with only inaccuracy in front of goal keeping them from having a larger lead going into half time.
West Brunswick picked up their pressure and were rewarded with an impressive goal from a strong piece of play that boosted the teams confidence going into half time. The two teams continued to swap possession almost going end to end for most of the remainder of the game. Marcellin had more possession of the ball in their forward 50 but the defensive pressure of West Brunswick was enough to stop any more scoring. The pressure didn’t let up from West Brunswick in the final term with them holding on to get the win by outscoring Marcellin on points.
It was a hot start by Kew scoring quickly after the break to put some space between the two teams. St Kevin’s did what they could to compete and keep pace with Kew who were all around the ground, using their momentum to score again and take a handy lead over St Kevin’s into the final term. St Kevin’s upped their pressure in the final term and were able to chip away at the lead held by Kew. Kew managed just one point in the final term, but they were able to hold on and get the win against the undefeated St Kevin’s. Both teams now sit even on wins, but St Kevin’s hold on to the number one spot on the ladder due to their percentage.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Caulfield Grammarians came out strong early in their match against Old Xaverians, kicking three unanswered goals in the first quarter. With the wind on their side in the second quarter Old Xaverians fought back with some good sections of play and strong set shots limiting the lead that Caulfield had at half time. The third quarter saw Caulfield come out strong with some quick inside 50’s that saw them change the momentum of the game completely. There wasn’t much Old Xaverians could do while Caulfield scored 5 unanswered goals to take a commanding lead into the final term. They maintained the pace in the final quarter only allowing one more goal to be added by Old Xaverians. With the win Caulfield are now firmly holding on to the third spot on the ladder going into round seven of the competition.

With Melbourne Uni hosting pride round, there was a big crowd to watch them take on St Mary’s Salesian. The home team was also celebrating the 50th game for Captain Emma Delaney and Femke Russell. Once the game started, it was all Melbourne Uni who were coming off a disappointing loss the week before at the hands off ladder leaders St Kevin’s. Melbourne Uni were strong in offence, kicking four goals in the first quarter and not enabling St Mary’s to have any easy possessions. Melbourne Uni continued to keep the pressure on throughout the second quarter and kept St Mary’s scoreless when they went into the half time break. It was a 10 goal lead for Melbourne Uni to start the second half and they didn’t let up on St Mary’s at all. Scoring another three goals in the third quarter Melbourne Uni continued their dominance only allowing St Mary’s to score one point which would be their only score for the game. The win gives Melbourne Uni a good boost to their percentage that puts them in a tight contest for fourth position with West Brunswick.
