SEASON 2023 - May 27
Amongst all the various other themes that were celebrated last week (AFL Indigenous Round, International IDAHOBIT Day, National Volunteer Week), it was also the weekend when we took time to promote and acknowledge all the VAFA and Club umpires that take to the field each week to ensure that we are able to play games of Amateur football.
It’s extremely important that our VAFA community umpires feel connected to our competition. I’ve spoken to many Club representatives about suggestions of getting back to the days gone by when the umpires were invited into the social rooms after the game to share a drink and a yarn with players, coaches and supporters and be noted in the official post game speeches.
There are over 500 umpires in total in our competition and, as the old adage goes, we don’t have a game without them. Unfortunately, statistics show that between 30 and 40 percent leave the game each year, and it is not easy to replace them, let alone grow the numbers and relieve Clubs from having to find volunteers to do these match day duties.
Some Clubs did especially well last weekend in providing the welcoming environment and showing signs of respect through guards of honour. I am aware that Old Scotch and Old Xavs in Premier Men’s and Old Brighton and Old Camberwell in Division 1 Women’s took extra steps to show their support of the umpires and promoted that through their social media channels.
However, whilst some VAFA Clubs were terrific, there were far too many other Clubs involved in incidents of poor behaviour towards umpires on the weekend.
Jason ReddickCEO
Umpire Appreciation Round 6 resulted in 4 reports of umpire abuse.
In all 6 rounds to date, there have been 11 charges laid for abusive insulting and threatening behaviour towards umpires, obscene language and acts of misconduct. This has resulted in 9 guilty verdicts and players suspended for a total of 24 matches.
I was so disappointed to hear from some senior and experienced umpires during the week that they don’t want to be highlighted at some grounds as it only draws attention to them, and this creates a rod for their back from abusive players and spectators.
One of the great strengths of the VAFA has been the respectful environment that provides for all our community to participate and watch our games of football. This can be contrasted with some of the terrible incidents that have taken place in other community leagues recently.
The VAFA doesn’t take our good reputation for granted and we are hell bent on ensuring our competition remains the safest and most welcoming environment for everyone.
All VAFA Clubs and our extended community are hereby on notice that we will be cracking down and policing the Player and Spectator codes of conduct, and any further transgressions in respect of Umpire abuse will be severely dealt with.
I call on all our leaders of VAFA Clubs: the Presidents, Committees, coaches, and captains to show the way and ensure that all umpires are treated with respect at all times. Our competition depends on that.

Pull out the one-wood and swing for the fences this weekend
At the beginning of every pre-season, usually a club will sit down as a whole and openly discuss the following question; What do we want to stand for next season?
Six weeks into the home and away season, some clubs will look back on those initial pre-season meetings and happily tick the box that says ‘yes, we’re where we set out to be’. Others will be kicking, fighting and screaming to get back to the standards they set themselves in the pre-season.
Heading into this weekend, for the second week in a row, as the top four face off against one another again, the DNA of William Buck Premier clubs will be on show for all to see.
Old Scotch are in a position to move into premiership favouritism if they’re to walk off Brighton Beach Oval victorious.
Considering they’ve beaten Old Brighton the last three match ups, they will fancy themselves against the Tonners.
The DNA the Cardinals have shown in 2023, youthful exuberance that requires the opposition to play the full four quarters if they want to win. Old Scotch have blown their opponents away in the final quarters. 115 points in the positive. Last weekend, it was Old Xaverians to feel the brunt, previously Old Haileybury, Uni Blues and Caulfield have all seen it first hand.
This weekend is not a walk-up start for Mark Gnatt’s men. The one-wood of the Tonners was on full display in the first half against St Kevin’s, contested, congested, gritty and lippy. Before busting it open in the third term.
Felix Flockhart poses as a threat in the middle of the ground. Ben Pryor is in a rich vein of form in the forward line, and Sam Collins is proving to be pivotal to the back six.
Everything about this contest is mouthwatering. Old Brighton are a genuine contender for this year’s title. Old Scotch have been building since midway through 2022, and are posing as the side ready to take St Kevin’s mantle. This is a genuine toss of the coin battle.
Off the back of the 2017 and 2018 Grand Finals, the modern-day rivalry that gets put in the calendar at the start of every season is Collegians and St Kevins
Jared Rivers told the RSN Xtra Commentary Team last weekend the fabric of his side is to play fun, fast, attacking footy. 10 minutes into the contest on Sunday, it was hard to argue with that.
From there, the attacking brand was swamped by the University Blues and ‘Riv’ has a new set of questions to ask his troops this week ahead of the clubs biggest game of the season. Injuries have hit for the first time this year, Dave Mirra (groin) and Brayden Fleming (hamstring).
Will the opening round rising star Teigan Otter be recalled? Selection will be interesting for the Lions.
SKOB suffered their first loss of the year last weekend. The streak of 13 finishes. The last time they did lose was at the hands of
Collegians. But, there wouldn’t be too much panic from the reigning premiers camp.
Six key changes last week have stretched the depth. Expect one, two, maybe three or four of those players to be recalled this weekend.
St Kevin’s are unified, structured and system based. The 18-man press is almost impossible to penetrate. If they implement their fabric early, it will make it tough for the Lions to get their fun freeflowing football going.
On the flipside, when SKOB hit the go button to attack, it’s the likes of Al Richards, Luke Winter, Liam Gunson, and Cam Hodges ready to surge.
The RSN Xtra Match of the Day sees Caulfield Grammarians meet University Blues.
In the coaches box, it’s the battle of the Guy’s. McKenna vs. Martyn. Both with their own unique styles.
Uni Blues have claimed two big scalps in two weeks. Old Brighton, and Collegians. Without Sam Grimley, Dane Crognale and Tom Cutler. These three players again will not be available for selection this weekend.
The Fields walked off the ground with their first win of the season last week against Old Haileybury. A contest they’ve been building towards.
Under ‘Bluey’, the Fields have been gritty, gutsy and determined. Wholesale changes over the pre-season has forced the hand of the club to try new styles, and play new players. Four points last week will go a long way to the internal belief that what they’re implementing, is working.
‘Marto’ has a plethora of talent available at his disposal. He’s become somewhat of a magnet flipper throughout the early phases of the year. The most recent move has seen Tom Young spending time in the forward line.
It’s been nine long years since Caulfield have beaten the Uni Blues at their home ground. This weekend is a perfect opportunity for the club to rewrite that unwanted piece of history.

Old Melburnians will head to Princes Park facing off against Old Haileybury with a little bit of emotional nourishment on the back of their first win last weekend.
Old Haileybury will be ruing missed opportunities in front of goal against Caulfield. The scoring has been stifled. Going into the Premier B finals series in 2022, Daniel Ward’s men were scoring at an average of 92 points per game. So far this year that’s down to 53.
While statistically it doesn’t read as promising. This club plays with pride, they compete and don’t go away. Pushing St Kevin’s to within a point, giving Old Scotch a shake, running all over the University Blacks. Going into the weekend, Daniel Ward has used the least amount of players so far - 27. Meaning he’s keeping the faith with the guys every week. Not chopping and changing at the first signs of panic.
The Navy Blue will be buoyed by last week’s victory. They still had moments in the game that saw parts of the OM’s that have let them down so far this year, trailing by 25 points. But, equally the best. Being able to work their way back into the game, and hold on at the finish. Jackson Paine stood tall and delivered. Arthur Rush put in his nomination for goal of the year.
Paul Satterley is a student of the game and absorbs it all. He wears his heart on his sleeve, he encourages his team to play with the same passion he holds for the game. The side has the ability to be steady, composed and classy. Injuries and constant change to the line-up has been a factor.
The ramifications for the loser of this contest are big. While the winner won’t be completely out of danger, missing out on these four points could start the rattle and rumblings of the unwanted R-word.
For the first time since Round 17, 2017 - Old Xaverians will travel out to Melbourne University Oval to face off against University Blacks
That day, much like last Saturday afternoon. Both games the red and black mafia would rather forget. The loss all but sealed the end of their 2017 finals dreams. A loss again this weekend will split the Xaverians further away from the top five sides and the dream of playing finals in the clubs centenary year.
The aura around Xav’s for as long as I can recall has always been ‘powerhouse’. The most dominant side in the VAFA, although St Kevin’s are starting to mount a genuine case.
This Xaverians side has run through 11 debutants in 2023, earlier this week vice-captain Billy Gowers put in a request to change leagues, and unfortunately Dan Hannebery is recovering from a broken jaw. To make the challenge tougher, the skipper is still a week or two away. The past fortnight for the Uni Blacks has seen significant improvement from the scoresheet. A thumping win over Caulfield, followed up by a close loss to Old Melburnians.
Josh Steadman is the best player in this side who’s pushing for the #1 ruck spot in the Big V side later this year.
Campbell Moorfield, and Joel Ernest are the regular names across the backline who’ve also thrown their hands up. Nick Hey in the forward line is proving to be a threat.
Dale Bower believes he has the side to challenge, and compete in William Buck Premier. The last fortnight has shown the club walking the walk out on the field.
All coaches will be looking to their players this weekend and reminding them of the clubs fabric, the clubs DNA, imploring them to bring out the clubs one-wood and give it one big swing for the fences. With so much on the line in Round 7, there’s no time to waste.

Usual suspects win again as last year’s grand finalists slide down the ladder
Round 6 in William Buck Premier Women’s saw St Kevin’s return fresh from the bye and straight back onto the winners list with a dominant victory over Fitzroy, as the ladder starts to take shape, with a dominant top four and an unexpected fall down the ladder from Caulfield.
In the first game of the round, Kew produced a dominant victory over Coburg, again proving why they are currently on top of the table.
This game was ultimately an easy win for Kew, allowing Coburg to score only one goal in the game and keeping them without a score for the entire first half. The contest was won in the second quarter, as Kew scored 26 points to Coburg’s zero.
Ashlee Kate Bruce was Kew’s best, whilst Lily Barr continued her strong season so far. For Coburg, Lauren Collis was once again best on, and Tayla Dinuccio managed their only goal.
Next week, Kew will take on Old Scotch at Camberwell Sportsground in what will be one of the games of the round. Meanwhile, the Lions will host Caulfield.
St Kevin’s returned to their usual dominance, fresh off the bye, to beat Fitzroy by 28 points. After losing to Old Scotch in round 4, SKOB returned to the winners list with a strong victory, only allowing Fitzroy to score seven points after half time and a total of 15 for the game.
Simone Mooney scored her fourth goal of the season for Fitzroy, having only gone goalless in two games this season. Sunday Brisbane was also Fitzroy’s best.
It was the usual suspects once again in SKOB’s best, with Bree Doyle named in the best once again, and is yet to miss out. Catherine Stanton scored her seventh goal of the season to also be named amongst the best.
Next week, SKOB will play in an exciting top four battle against Collegians, whilst Fitzroy have the bye.
In an unexpected result, West Brunswick beat Caulfield Grammarians, as last year’s grand finalists slumped to sixth on the ladder. It was a close game, with kicking accuracy the ultimate decider.
The Magpies were unable to score in a tense final quarter, and had a point taken off them. Caulfield had one scoring shot in the final quarter, however could not convert. Scoring 1.3 in the second quarter to Brunswick’s three goals was where the game was decided.
Sophie Stewart kicked a three goal bag for West Brunswick, whilst Ursula Fithall was best. Chantella Perera was Grammarians best and Alice Campbell managed two goals.
Next week, Caulfield have a chance to win against Coburg, whilst West Brunswick will travel to take on Melbourne Uni.
Collegians solidified their grasp on second spot on the ladder after a 24 point victory over Melbourne Uni. It was a closely contested match right up until the last quarter, with Melbourne Uni only down by five points going into the final change. However, a four-goal last quarter from the Purple Army got them over the line.

Old Geelong finds winning ways as the Sharks produce their biggest win this season
It was a round of mixed results across the board for Premier B but both Fitzroy and St Bernard’s remain unbeaten for the season. Meanwhile St Bedes/Mentone Tigers were able to snatch a victory to stay in reaching distance of the top teams.
The largest win of the weekend went to Beaumaris who pulled away to win by 137 points against Monash Blues. It’s the highest score kicked by a team this season in Premier B with the Sharks scoring 27 goals from 12 individual goal kickers. James Freeman had a satisfying day down forward with seven goals while Joseph Nowell booted home five majors. Callum Heath backed up his tremendous form of recent weeks to finish as the Sharks best player as he too kicked a major. The Sharks have now only dropped the one game to St Bernard’s but sit comfortably in third position with this win acting as a healthy percentage booster. For Monash Blues, Mitch King was able to show some fight as he kicked three goals as well as being named their best player.
On what was a special day for St Bernard’s, they were able to celebrate their 60 th year in the VAFA competition with smiles as they defeated Old Trinity to the tune of 66 points. The Snowdog’s came out firing kicking five goals to win in the first quarter before Trinity were able to hit back in the second quarter with six goals to cut a margin back to 17 points. However, the third quarter saw the game creep into the hands of the Snowdog’s keeping Trinity goalless. Ben Huggard continued to hit his top form with a best on ground performance and two majors with Fergus McNicol providing service up forward to finish with four goals. Oliver Scott for Trinity was again their best player with Dominic Payman not far behind him with three goals.
Fitzroy have also continued their unbeaten streak as they defeated AJAX by 43 points. It’s been a rough start to the season for AJAX having played both undefeated teams already as well as Old Geelong and St Bedes/ Mentone in the opening six rounds of footy. Fitzroy were able to kick clear in the final quarter, but AJAX fought on valiantly. The margin was only one point a quarter time as AJAX matched the Roys with four goals each, but they just couldn’t stick with them during the second half. Charlie Faubel and Luke Baker were strong up forward for the Roys with three goals each while Max Ellis was named Fitzroy’s best player. For AJAX Ben Krongold was once again competitive with two majors and Charles Hamilton also showed fight as he was named their best player.
Meanwhile St Bedes/Mentone were able to secure their third win of the season against De La Salle in what was a competitive game. The Tigers trailed at half time by eight points but were able to stifle the De La Salle attack in the third quarter to restrict them to two goals and edge clear by 16 points at the final break. The last quarter saw the Tigers kick just one goal, but it was enough for them to pull away with the win. Ben Murphy was able to hit the scoreboard with three goals while Michael Barnes was able to assist with two goals and a best on ground display. For De La Salle, Sam Williams and Liam Murphy were both impressive and helped keep them in the game.
The final game of the round saw Old Geelong pull through to win by just five points against Williamstown CYMS. Geelong had to win the hard way as they came from behind after trailing at three quarter time by 16 points. Its now their third consecutive win as they stay a game clear of De La Salle in fourth position. Impressively its also the fourth time they have kicked over 100 points and on all four occasions they have come away winners. Mickey Nicholls continued his superb year with another three goals for the season bringing his season goal total to 15 while Sam Barnett booted three goals also to progress his total to 14 goals this season. Scott Dixon was Old Geelong’s best player as they continue to shine with their offensive game and attack in the forward line.

This weekend will see quality matchups across the board with the first game of the round to feature AJAX up against Monash Blues. One team will walk away with their first win of the season, and it’s tipped to be a tight tussle between these two sides. Williamstown have also found a patch of form which saw them get their first win in round five and go right to the line against Old Geelong. This week their challenge will be De La Salle who are looking to respond after their loss to the Tigers. Meanwhile St Bernard’s will travel out to Geelong College to take on Old Geelong with the Snowdog’s looking to maintain their perfect streak to start the season. Old Trinity will welcome St Bedes/Mentone which will be a close contest considering these two sides sit sixth and seventh respectively. But the biggest game of the weekend will feature ladder leaders Fitzroy up against their toughest challenge yet, Beaumaris, as the Sharks look to snap up their sixth win this season.

The match between St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and Brunswick showcased an exciting battle on the field. The Tigers dominated the game, displaying their offensive prowess and tight defence. The clash between top four sides Monash Blues and Old Yarra Cobras resulted in a low-scoring and closely contested affair, resulting in the season’s first draw, with both teams kicking one goal one. PEGS remain unbeaten while Camberwell holds on
Round 6 of the Premier C Men’s competition delivered yet another set of exciting games.
After suffering consecutive defeats by significant margins in the past two weeks, Mazenod aimed to make a strong comeback against the second-placed Old Camberwell Grammarians. They went into halftime trailing by just a single point.
The second half of the game was fiercely contested, and with only two minutes remaining, the margin remained unchanged. Riley Verbi drew a high tackle 50 meters out from the goal and strategically used up the clock with a shot on goal. It was at this crucial moment that Harry Laukens took a remarkable goal-line mark off Verbi’s kick, effectively running down the clock before sealing the victory.
Meanwhile, Lachie Powell of Camberwell displayed his exceptional goalkicking dominance by slotting 3 goals throughout the match.
After a spirited fight in the first three quarters following their bye, Hampton Rovers found themselves trailing the undefeated table-toppers, PEGS, by just 1 point at three-quarter time. However, PEGS proved their dominance in the competition during the final quarter, emerging as 13-point victors and extending their undefeated streak.
Old Carey, needing a victory after last week’s draw, secured a much-needed 37-point win over Marcellin. With this win, Old Carey moved up to the middle of the ladder and balanced their win-loss record. Unfortunately for Marcellin, their struggles continued after their incredible win last week, as they now find themselves at the bottom of the ladder. They will need to urgently turn their season around after their upcoming bye.
Mitchell Wooffindin played a pivotal role for Carey, impressing with 4 goals. Additionally, Nicholas Brewin, Lachlan Godden, Shaun Tyquin, and Lachlan Rush each contributed 3 goals in this highscoring match.
At three-quarter time, Parkdale held a narrow 20-point lead over Ormond. However, in the final quarter, Parkdale demonstrated their dominance by preventing Ormond from scoring a single goal, ultimately securing a commanding 41-point victory, and solidifying their position in the top four on the ladder.
Old Ivanhoe Grammarians enjoyed a bye this week and will eagerly anticipate returning to action in Round 7 against the Hampton Rovers.
Round 7 promises several exciting matchups to look forward to, including the clash between PEGS and Old Carey. Old Carey will aim to climb the ladder, while PEGS seeks to maintain their unbeaten streak.

Community Umpiring Week
Last weekend, the VAFA celebrated Community Umpiring Week. It was great to see many VAFA clubs recognise the umpires, including forming a guard of honour as they entered the ground, playing shaking their hands and/or posing for photos prior to the first bounce, and recognising them in the post-match awards.

700 Games for VAFA Goal Umpire
In Round 5, Ormond and Marcellin players and officials formed a guard of honour to acknowledge the significant achievement by David D’Altera to umpire his 700 th VAFA game. Those in attendance clapped and cheered David as he strode onto EE Gunn Reserve, before doing the toss of the coin.
David commenced with the VAFA in 1985 and initially reached an impressive 450 game milestone as a field umpire. He mainly umpired D Grade and Under 19 matches and was appointed to one Grand Final as a field umpire. He then took up goal umpiring, and last Saturday was his 250 th game as a goal umpire, and 700 th game overall. He was awarded Life Membership of the VAFA Umpire Association in 2008 for meritorious service to the VAFUA.
Post-match, Ormond President Richard Simon presented David with a gift from the club to a thunderous applause from the many Ormond and Marcellin supporters assembled upstairs in the social rooms. Congratulations, David, from all VAFA players and supporters on your significant umpiring milestone.
Ormond Fifth Day Lunch
Ormond AFC held its Fifth Day Lunch last Friday which was hosted by club historian Alan Naylor. Of the 80 attendees, no fewer than nine VAFA clubs were represented, while there were 12 former Big V reps, including 3 Captains and several All Australians reps, 4 Big V coaches/assistants/ selectors, and several other significant VAFA people. Guest speaker was incoming AFL CEO Andrew Dillon who had an entertaining discussion with Luke O’Brien.

Old Xavs celebrate 100 years
More than 800 people packed Centrepiece Melbourne last Saturday evening to celebrate 100 years of Red & Black. It was a once-in-a-century celebration for a club that means so much to so many. 83 OXFC premiership flags were draped around the room, while the club’s 14 A Section premiership cups took pride of place on the stage.
It was a memorable night. President Matt Cosgrave spoke and club legend Dermot Dann linked a series of videos with his remarkable anecdotes, while special numbered centenary guernseys (featuring the names of every premiership player, premiership coach and life members) were sold at auction.
Here’s to the next 100 years!
Jack Batten (who passed away peacefully on 12 th May) was and will remain in our memory as a wonderful man. A fine amateur footballer, Jack captained the University Blacks’ 1974 A Section premiership side (playing about 80 games for the Blacks) and coached the Old Xaverians to a premiership in 1978. A loving husband and father whose boys also played for the Blacks (and Old Melburnians), Jack was good company and an engaging and interested friend to many. He even had a share in a Group 1 winner! A highly regarded barrister, Jack was a skilled and fearless advocate who will be missed by his colleagues at the Bar. A person of integrity, character, intellect and deep faith, on 19 th May, a large gathering participated in a funeral mass for the repose of Jack’s soul at the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorn in addition to which marvellous eulogies were given Jack’s children, Fiona, David, Luke and Nicholas. May you rest in peace, Jack. Blackers unum et omnia, Blackers one and all.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Simone Mooney
The VAFA congratulates young gun Simone Mooney from Fitzroy who has been nominated as the Round 6 Rising Star. Simone has featured in the best players every week in her debut season for the Roys.
What the club said:
“Simone has been amazing this year for the senior club,” says coach Nathan Jumeau. “From her very first game since stepping up from the Fitzroy Juniors’ Youth Girls team, Simone has played a massive role in the midfield, also finding the goals with pleasing regularity.
“With quiet determination, Simone’s single-minded aim is to get better as a footballer and as a teammate at training and in games and has impressed everyone at the Roys.
“Simone is a pleasure to coach, and we look forward watching what’s bound to be a long and brilliant career.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Rhys Galvin
The VAFA congratulates Rhys Galvin from Old Scotch Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 6. Galvin is a stalwart in defence and kept the Xavs forwards quiet in their 35-point victory on the weekend, earning him a spot in the best.
What the club said:
Men’s Senior Coach, Mark Gnatt said, “At the raw age of 18, Rhys plays with poise and composure well beyond his years. He is a solid defender that can play as a key back (at 190cm) in a lockdown role and is developing his craft as a rebounder off half-back. He was tasked with matching up on one of the competition’s key players on the weekend and Rhys acquitted himself very well by winning most one-on-one battles.
Rhys is a quiet country lad from Warragul, and he has fitted into the Old Scotch footy club seamlessly. His team-mates love having him run out with them and he has proven to be a consistent contributor each week and thoroughly deserves this rising star nomination.”

West Brunswick win in a nail biter, as Kew Bears secure a win down south
Prahran took on UHS-VU on Saturday; a game that was expected to be a close encounter, and it was just that. Both teams started strongly with Prahran taking the main ascendancy throughout the game as they took a lead at every term. Prahran midfielder and weapon Matt Clifford once again showed whose boss on a football field kicking four goals. Clifford’s ability to convert this season has highlighted him as one of the prominent midfielders of the Div 1 comp. UHS didn’t lose hope though as they were able to keep up for a good portion of the game.
Paddy Wernert, Harrison Kenndey shining lights for the UHS side as they looked to try and regain the momentum for the young side but just fell short. Prahran coming away with the win in the end 15.11 101 to UHS 8.8 56.
The inform Kew FC Bears travelled south to take on the Old Peninsula Pirates at Harry Mcdonald Oval. Kew really took the game on from the second quarter onwards as Lachie Brown and Matt Sharkey were strong down forward to help Kew to a commanding win. The Pirates were not able to wrestle back the momentum during the game as they struggled to convert on the scoreboard. In saying that the pirates did have some loyal soldiers in their team with Peacock and Baczyk named in their best in the clash. Kew Bears’ winning streak increases to 4 wins in a row, winning 11.19 85 to Old Pens 6.7 43.
West Brunswick took on Preston at the Ransford Oval on Saturday. The magpies were under siege early as the Bullants took the early head start to their game leading at half time by a goal. Conor Howard and Liam Mcloed were instrumental for the Bullants early on, leading the way for the Bullants to hopefully snatch a win. However, the Magpies came steaming home with a resurgence as they looked to push on for a victory. Goals to Hutchins, Wall and Buckler helped the Magpies over the line in an absolute thriller, winning by six points over the Bullants.
Big matchup between Oakleigh and Therry Penola, with the excitement building from the week leading in. Both key forwards in Eddie Standish and Kane O’Halloran, put on goal kicking masterclass in what was a very high-scoring game. O’Halloran just getting the better of the two, kicking 6 to Standish’s 5 goals. When push came to shove, it was the Krushers booting seven goals in the second term to put them ahead that really cemented their dominance in the game. But the Lions didn’t throw in the towel, despite trailing, posting a commendable final score of 89. Ultimately, the Oakleigh Krushers got the win by 27 points.

Will anyone stop the Glen Eira Gryphons this season? They are looking like the Melbourne FC of 2021. They hosted Ivanhoe at Packer Park in a twilight special and really put the sword to Ivanhoe from the start, keeping them goalless to midway of the second term. Daniel McDonald put on a goal kicking masterclass and a best on ground performance booting five goals. which was able to put the nail in the coffin for the magpies. Ivanhoe did have some handy contributions from Moran and Muscat as they aimed to try stem the flow of the Gryphons onslaught. This wasn’t enough as Glen Eira secured the victory and went to 6-0 for Season 2023.

Old Brighton stamp their authority and Old Geelong get back on track.
Round 6 for Division 1 Women’s saw a pile on of goals, with convincing wins for multiple sides.
Old Brighton was determined not to lose two weeks in a row and made up for last week’s defeat with a strong win over Old Camberwell Grammarians. Old Brighton was ahead all day but really stamped their authority on Old Camberwell in the second half, only allowing Old Camberwell to score a further two behinds while adding seven more goals themselves.
Daisy Flockart caused a headache for the Old Camberwell defenders, ending the day with four goals to her name and featuring in the best for Old Brighton. This puts her in equal third place on the goal kicking tally for Division 1, with nine goals so far this season.
India and Lily Tait also continued their strong form for Old Brighton, both receiving Coach’s votes once again. For Old Camberwell, Alexandra Herrington and Olivia Honore were stalwart as ever.
It was fitting that the match of the round saw Old Melburnians host Beaumaris at the home of VAFA football, Elsternwick Park.
It was a tight contest all day, with Old Melburnians leading by a single point at half time. Unfortunately for the Omelettes, it was the third quarter that let them down, as they were unable to score but let Beaumaris get away with one important goal that would turn out to be the difference, with Beaumaris eventually getting over the line by six points.
Sally Peers and Clare Fraser battled hard all day for Old Melburnians with support from crafty forward duo, Sophie Fraser (3 goals) and Ellen Williams (2 goals), while Cassandra Newman was best for Beaumaris for the third time this season.
Another strong performance by Samantha Mclean saw her finish with three goals for the Sharks, putting her atop the goal kicking leader board with a tally of 14 goals, three goals clear of her teammate Simone Marinelli.
Hawthorn AFC are still yet to record a win in Division 1, after losing to Hampton Rovers by 33 points. The two teams met at Castlefield Reserve where the home side was just too strong for the travelling Hawks.
Holly du Plessis and Charrlotte Miller never gave up hope, competing hard all day for the Hawks, while Maisy Evans and Jasmine Andros continued their excellent form to play significant roles in the Rovers’ win.
Hampton Rovers now sits just outside of the top four and will have the opportunity to launch themselves into finals contention when they come up against the underperforming Old Haileybury next week.
Hawthorn AFC will continue to strive for that first win but might have to be patient as they come up against the in-form Old Brighton next week.
Old Geelong have got their season back on track with a strong win over Old Haileybury.
Old Haileybury brought the heat early, hitting the scoreboard first whilst keeping Old Geelong goalless for the first term. However, it proved to be another tale of the premiership quarter, with Old Geelong kicking 3.3 in the third to make any comeback too big of an ask for Old Haileybury. Old Haileybury did kick the final goal of the game, but it was too little too late, as they went down by 22 points.

Annabel Rafferty and Eloise Mccrae were best for their respective sides.
Old Haileybury have now slid to 8th place on the ladder and will need to turn their season around quickly if they want to make finals again this year.
Marcellin OC have reminded us that they are a powerhouse of women’s football, after a compelling performance against Old Xaverians. Bolstered by the likes of returning VFLW-listed players, Laura Robertson and Alana Pane; the Sheagles were relentless.
It was clear it was going to be a long day for Old Xaverians, after Marcellin kicked four unanswered goals in the opening term. Old Xaverians did well to get the game back on their terms for the middle stretch but they ran out of steam, allowing Marcellin to kick another four goals in the final quarter which saw them storm home to win by 48 points.
It was a team performance by Marcellin, who had eight different goal scorers, but key contributions from Jennae Wakefield, Talia Oates and Taylah Lambert should not go unmentioned.
For Old Xaverians, Eibhlin Craig and Monique Mennilli did what they could do to keep their team in the game.

Underdog Unicorns are raring for Top Four
The top four is shaping up. Brunswick, Parkside, South Melbourne Districts and Whitefriars all neck and neck, with the underdog Unicorns raring at the gate to snag a spot for themselves.
MHSOB put on a show on Saturday with an inspirational team effort against Whitefriars. In the first quarter the Friars played their classic footy, high pressure and disciplined with a 26 point lead, but the Unicorns had other things in mind. William Hellier, William Cardwell and Mitchell Wilson turned the tide by winning the in-and-under and placing pressure along the corridor. Opportunities for forwards came along with them, Matthew Pereira (4 goals) and Chris Tetaz (2 Goals) held the line, while William Suhr dominated the ground with four goals. Their skill with the footy only improved as the game prolonged, taking lead in the third and continuing to concert in the fourth.
The Unicorns are officially in-form with four wins in a row. Round 7 sees them home at the Woodfull-Miller Oval against the leaders of the pack Brunswick for what is bound to be an exhilarating battle for top four.
The Brunswick boys fix their crown as they re-start their winning streak and return to the top spot in the Division 2 Men’s ladder. Brunswick came out of the gate with thunder, setting a 36-point lead over St Mary’s Salesian by the end of the first quarter. Best and Fairest, Lewis White worked well behind the ball with the help of Ben Wilson’s flair. Josh Hedley, Nick Burgin and Gus Ross played their classic footy and it showed on the scoreboard. Hayden Parker (4 goals) and Thomas Wilson (2 goals) worked wonders in front
of goal, Johnny Haddad was a monster for opportunity but couldn’t quite convert going 1.7. Tahj Haddock put in the work once again setting up well defensively and limiting any opportunity for Saint’s goals. Overall, another impressive performance for Brunswick with the combination of intensity, pressure and midfielders providing opportunity after opportunity. With a few accuracy-drills they’ll be sure to bring their classic brilliance to MHSOB in Round 7.
Old Paradians fans were all smiles after their first win in 2023. The Raiders played a promising brand of footy from the first quarter to the last and went home with their chins high because of a convincing 28-point win over Bulleen Templestowe. Harrison Colomer ran his laces off, won the in-and-under and forced heavy pressure on the Bullants. James King Struan Thomson and Thomas Philp spread their talent all over the ground and put their body on the line for inside fifties. Michael Boundy (4 Goals) made sure his expertise showed up on the scoreboard finishing with accuracy and style. With the Raiders finally making their mark on the division’s ladder, we’re excited to see what they have up their sleeve for weeks to come.
As a result of the Devil’s 5-point loss against the Bullants in round 5, the Old Yarra Cobras faced a ravenous Parkside in Round 6. A competitive first quarter saw the teams neck and neck, but the skill, ball movement and flair of familiar faces Jack Hamilton, Luciano Logozzo and Michael Romano put the pressure on the Cobras. The chemistry of the Parkside midfield is one for the ages and gives rise to golden goalkickers
Mitchell Lawson and Benedict Douglas. Not to mention Benjamin Radford who kicked the leather off his boots with an unstoppable 8 goals to his name. By the final siren, Parkside played all four quarters with expertise,

hungry for the footy and those four points. They’ve proven to be a squad filled to the brim with talent, versatility, and shown to capitalise on their opportunities, coming home with a 51-point victory over the Cobras.
It’s been a world class two rounds for South Melbourne Districts, a win over the Friars in round 5, and a 19-point win over the ambitious Aquinas in Round 6. From the get-go there was nothing stopping the Swans. Jesse Andrew ripped up the field and the footy, Luke Money and Dominic Tesoriero were too slick and quick for the Bloods. Sam Bradford refused to miss in front of goal kicking six in a most convincing fashion, ultimately converting their hard-earned talent to the scoreboard. Overall, the Swans are looking high and mighty, a tough physical team with some height, flare, and the capacity for brilliance, they are most definitely to remain in the top four if they continue with more solid performances.

Williamstown’s domination continues while St Marys secure their first win of the season.
Round 6 brought with it a display of heart and grit with all teams in for some tough, wet weather footy.
Williamstown continued their winning streak coming up against Old Trinity, while St Mary’s brought home their first win for the season in a close game against Therry Penola.
As Old Trinity took on Williamstown at Hudson Oval it was a match up set to test both teams. A low scoring first quarter highlighted the challenge these top sides posed to each other. Williamstown started to run away with the game late in the second quarter as they kept Old Trinity goalless going into halftime. Despite Old Trinity’s best effort to advance the ball downfield in hope of adding to the scoreboard, Williamstown’s ability to control the play combined with their fierce offensive pressure proved too good for Old Trinity.
Old Trinity toiled away despite a fifty-five-point margin going into the last quarter, with Larni Dibben kicking the teams only goal of the game. Kiara Palmar was best on for Williamstown and Sofi-Kristin Georgas kicked 4 majors to help secure the win.
Just next door at Ivanhoe Park, Ivanhoe took on Albert Park Falcons. In a strong first quarter effort the Falcons left the Ivies scoreless going into quarter time. Ivanhoe started to find their rhythm as the game progressed, with Molly Uwland showcasing her ability across the ground with impressive run and carry efforts. With Ivanhoe ramping up the pressure in the second half and kicking 7 goals,
Tessa Vandergriff, an Ivies veteran and experienced defender, exhibited her versatility by playing forward and kicking the first goal of her footy career.
Despite Ivanhoe’s strongest attempt to take the lead, Albert Park made the most of opportunities in front of goal and eventually were victorious.
Across town MCC were in for a big day as they faced off against Parkdale Vultures at Beaumaris Secondary College. Coming into the game as underdogs, MCC put on an impressive first quarter, matching Parkdale with one behind each. The Vultures began to assert their dominance in the second quarter despite the dreary conditions and continued to extend their lead into the second half of the game.
Bella Daddo starred up forward for Parkdale, kicking three goals, while the backline managed to keep MCC goalless for the entire game.
The highlight of the round was St Mary’s Salesian securing their first win of the season against Therry Penola at Ferndale Park. A close first half showcased the ability of each team, neither seemingly able to get the edge on the other. With St Marys going into the third quarter three points down, the Saints utilised their ability to skilfully transition the ball from their defensive fifty to their scoring end and performed in front of goal. Anna Vrsecky was an integral part of St Marys success, taking strong defensive marks, rucking and kicking a goal. An impressive 40m goal from Gabby Rawlings also helped secure the 20-point victory for St Marys.

Did we just see a grand final preview, or am I dreaming?
If you played in division three this week there was a 20% chance you were a part of a side that won by over 90 points as the cream of the crop rose to remind the competition that if you want to be the best, you better get recruiting.
Let’s kick things off with Wattle Park easily accounting for Swinburne University at home. Starting the first quarter with a bang, Swinburne left their kicking boots at home, struggling to find the majors with defenders under siege from any of the 10 goal scorers for the Animals. Wattle Park comes out of the round 6 battle with a huge percentage booster managing to run away 123-point winners to record the biggest winning margin of 2023 and sit three wins and three losses to kick start their campaign.
Moving onto the battle of the middle, it was Power House taking on the Richmond Central Snakes in a bid to ascend the ladder into the top four for one side and into the contention of a finals spot for the other. It’s been almost a theme all season for the Snakes with a hot start seeing the side run out to an early lead into the half off the back of some Jake Dillon brilliance and hard contested footy. On the back foot Power House managed to keep the visiting side scoreless in the third quarter and only allowed nine points in the final term, running out 10-point winners in what truly was a come from
behind miracle for a Saturday afternoon. Big games from Michael Timmons, Max McCulloch and the defenders of Power House means the side can breathe a little easier heading into round 7.
Next up two giants went at it as the cream of the crop (as I like to put it) fought it out for supremacy of what could be a grand final preview. Elsternwick and Hawthorn were sure to be a showstopper and boy it lived up to the hype, with the Hawks coming back from a disappointing first quarter to lead into the half. Elsternwick, who you will remember played as a part of last year’s grand final then put their foot on the gas and ripped the breaks out, rectifying some errant kicking to steam ahead by 22 points from a strong Hawks side.
The final game of the round was contested between the bookends of the competition, as the only other side I believe can sneak into a grand final spot, Canterbury, took on La Trobe University. The Cobras have been near perfect thus far in 2023 having only lost one game through the first six rounds, and this past weekend was never going to

be a question of how so but rather, how much. When the score read 89 to 3 in the first half every fan of La Trobe must have nearly packed up the car and committed to round 7 being a better time, however to their credit the side stemmed the flow of an 86-point deficit to only fall by 98 to the Cobras. For Canterbury big man Tom Lowden, it was another four goal haul whilst 11 of his other teammates decided to join the party to take honors as the most goal scorers in a singular side this round.

The Tiger train rolls on as the Demons get a boost
The first match of the round saw division leaders North Brunswick take on the always-game Albert Park
The first quarter saw the Bulls get the upper hand with a four-goal quarter that saw them take a 17-point lead into the first break. The second quarter had the Falcons battle with the Bulls, with a 3-goal quarter that was also matched by the Bulls leading to the lead only extending to 18 points.
Whoever got off to the best start to the third quarter would take the game with them and in this clash that was the Bulls. North Brunswick was able to put together a 5-goal to 1 quarter that saw the lead extend out to 42 points. The final quarter saw both teams up their defenses with the Falcons winning the quarter 2 goals to 1. Despite the Falcons winning the quarter, it was the Bulls that ultimately won the day with a convincing 34-point victory.
Amongst the best for the Bulls were Noah Young, Samuel Watt and Andrew Ramzy. The best for the Falcons included Henry Olive, Sam Lee and Felix Metz. Andrew Ramzy ran the show up forward for the Bulls with 4 goals with James Miralles Lombardo kicking 2 goals of his own.
Christopher Marson led the way for the Falcons with 3 goals with teammate Grant Klemm kicking 2 goals. The Bulls will now face their toughest task of the season as they come up against Masala in a first vs second matchup. The Falcons will now turn their attention to a clash against Box Hill North in what should be a competitive match.
The second match of the round saw two rivals clash as Box Hill North took on Eley Park in a game where both teams could use the win to boost their season. The Demons got off to one of the best starts we’ve seen this season as they had a huge 10-goal quarter whilst also keeping the Sharks to 2 goals. The Sharks had their best quarter in the second with a 3-goal quarter, however, with 4 goals to the Demons, the lead was extended out to 59 points with a half of football to play.
The third quarter saw the game slow right down for both sides with only a total of 3 goals kicked for the quarter, 2 of which were kicked by the Demons. This saw the Demons further extend their lead out to 65 points. The final quarter saw the Demons dominate when it came to scoring shots with 10 scoring shots, however, they were only able to convert 3 of those into goals. In the end, it was the Demons that convincingly won by 82 points, lifting them to third on the ladder.
Amongst the best of the Demons were Michael Trkujia, David Edwards and Joshua Chivers. In the best for the Sharks were Kane Scanlon, Jacob Rose and Bailey Bowyer. Joshua Chivers and Jonathan Tommasoni had a day out up forward as they combined for 10 goals. Tom Johnston was once again the main target for the Sharks which led to 3 goals, his third game for the season with 3+ goals. Box Hill North will now play Albert Park in what should be a great contest. The Sharks will look to get their first win of the season as they face St Johns.
The final match of the round saw another set of rivals clash as St John’s hosted Masala at Tatterson Park. The first quarter saw a slow start for both sides with Masala only managing 2 goals whilst the JOCS kicked 1 of their own. Heading into the second quarter up 10 points, the Tigers would need a big quarter to bring the game back onto their terms. After a long second term, the Tigers achieved just this with an 8-goal to 4 quarter, extending their lead out to 38 points as the teams went into the major break.

The third quarter saw the Tigers bring the same energy as they were able to kick away, adding 6 goals to their total whilst only keeping the JOCS to a single goal. This major quarter for the Tigers saw them extend their lead to 63 points. In the second quarter with both teams fatiguing, the Tigers once again were able to win the quarter with 3 goals whilst managing to keep the JOCS scoreless in the process. In the end, it was the Tigers who had a dominant 86-point victory, building momentum as they now move to a top-ofthe-table clash against North Brunswick.
In the best for the JOCS were Corey Ely, Vaughan Savage and Baiden Harris. In the best for the Tigers were Jake Dunkley, Riley Shaw and Matthew Decarne. Benjamin Ayache and Mitchell Clarke led the way up forward for the JOCS with 2 goals each. Captain Brandon Kelly kicked 4 goals for Masala whilst inside midfielder Tom Williamson kicked 3. St Johns will now look to rebound as they face Eley Park. The Tigers will now face the undefeated North Brunswick in their biggest game of the season so far.

MILESTONES
Shane Philbin (South Melbourne Districts)
Shane Philbin is a talented midfielder who hails from Mayo, Ireland. He began his AFL career with South Melbourne in 2018 and has since become a key player for the club. Phibo’s speed, agility, slick black hair, and excellent ball handling skills make him a formidable force on the field. He is equally comfortable playing on the wing or in the back line and has a keen eye for finding a mirror in any dressing room before a game. In his 50 games for South Melbourne Districts, Philbo has shown his versatility and consistency. He is known for his ability to read the game and make quick decisions, and he has become a leader on the field for the younger players. His inability to turn left is one of his trademarks that crowds love.
Will Nicholls (Old Scotch)

Shannon Keough (MHSOB FC)
Congratulations to Shannon Keough, who plays his 150th game for MHSOBFC this weekend. After joining the Unicorns in 2011 as a forward, Shannon ultimately found his home in the back half, establishing himself in the senior side. After being named captain of the reserves in 2015, Shannon led that team through a period of sustained success, as well as winning back-to-back Best and Fairest awards himself. A fixture of our club, both on and off the field, Shannon continues to play at a consistently high level, and his receipt of the Players’ Player award for 2022 shows the regard in which he is held by his teammates. Here’s to a few more seasons of footy yet!
Daniel O’Dea (South Melbourne Districts)
This weekend Daniel will play his 200th game for the Districts in his 16th year at club. Dan began his journey with the Districts in 2008 whilst he was completing his Year 12 studies. Affectionately referred to as ‘Diesel’, ‘Pockets’ or ‘Lingy’ in his early days, Daniel was a revered figure amongst the playing group. A natural Forward with a knack for kicking goals, Daniel would have plenty of rotations in the centre and at times be asked to play on the opponent’s best small forward. Daniel’s commitment to playing hasn’t wavered throughout his career. For a 2-year stretch, Daniel was living and working full time in Wangaratta and would still make the 2.5-hour drive to lace up the boots with the Districts every Saturday. No opponent was too big or too fast to compete against. In recent years, Daniel has become a strong presence in the Reserves and leads the midfield each week with his voice and attack on the footy. He is a cultural figure who is unmatched in his time at the club.

SKOB and Uni Blues assert their dominance, as De La secured a much needed victory
We are now 6 weeks in to the 2023 VAFA season. The U19 Premier section has begun to settle as illustrated by some predictable results last Saturday. We’re yet to see St Bernards clench a victory whilst St Kevins sit firmly atop the ladder. St Bedes/Mentone are sitting slightly on the outskirts in fifth position.
Old Scotch def by. Old Xaverians by 13 points.
In a tight contest, the Xavs once again displayed their composure and exceptional disposal efficiency, demonstrating why they are the reigning premier. Throughout the game, Scotch put up a fierce fight, staying on Xavs’ tail, although ultimately failing to snatch the lead. Despite their defeat, Scotch’s regulars exhibited outstanding individual performances.
The spearhead of Old Scotch, H. Robenstone, continued to impress with three superb goals, solidifying his position as the leading goal kicker in the division. Despite their strong performances thus far, Scotch finds themselves in 8th place on the ladder. To climb higher and start accumulating victories, they’ll need to focus on converting every opportunity that comes their way.
Amongst the standout players for Scotch were J . Harker, S. Norman, L. Harker, O. Iser, P. Johnson, and W. Townsend, who gave their all the entire afternoon.
Looking ahead, Old Scotch will face a tough challenge in Round 7 as they take on the top-placed St. Kevins. It will be a test of their mettle as they strive to secure a victory against a formidable opponent. On the other hand, the Xavs will be travelling to Brighton, ready to continue their winning momentum and maintain their dominant form.
Caulfield Grammarians def. St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 9 points.
In a highly anticipated clash, Caulfield maintained their lead throughout the afternoon despite Mentone’s determined efforts to counteract. Both teams had been in excellent form leading up to this matchup, and this contest only reaffirmed their strong performances.
The young Tigers started the match slowly, but gradually found their rhythm and worked their way into the game. Surpassing expectations, they have delivered five spirited performances so far this season. Once again, the youthful F. Groves stood strong as one of the best players on the field, contributing two goals to the team’s tally. Additionally, H. Gleeson played his part by kicking three majors, showcasing his skill in front of goal. Right from the outset, Caulfield’s composure was evident. They displayed a seamless blend of attacking prowess and superb defensive skills, converting goals while defending resolutely from their half-back line. Their consistent performances have earned them a spot inside the top four, reflecting the quality of their season thus far. Among the standout players for Caulfield were S. Haffenden, J. Pinder, H. Mcinerney, T. Warner, O. Sail, and J. Flavien, who showcased their skills and played pivotal roles in the team’s victory.
Looking ahead to Round 7, Caulfield will have the advantage of playing at home as they host Uni Blues. It promises to be an exciting matchup, with both teams aiming to secure a victory and maintain their spot in the four. On the other hand, SBMT will be facing De La Salle in the primetime slot at Brindisi Street.
De La Salle def. Old Brighton by 12
points.
In a tightly contested match, De La Salle finally secured another victory, marking a hopeful turning point for the hard-working side. They managed to maintain their lead throughout the entire contest, thanks in part to some brilliant individual performances. S. Filipovic has been putting together a terrific season and scored a major in this crucial win for his team. On the other hand, Brighton have struggled to replicate their strong performance from the previous year. They failed to take the lead after a lacklustre first quarter. Despite their efforts, the goal-scoring responsibilities
were spread across different players, highlighting the cohesive team effort. Looking ahead, Brighton faces a cross-town rival in Old Xavier in their upcoming match. It will be an exciting encounter as Brighton will aim to secure a victory and gain some momentum. Meanwhile, De La Salle will be traveling to Mentone to take on SBMT. This matchup presents another opportunity for De La Salle to continue their winning streak and further solidify their position in the competition. Mentone, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back and put up a strong fight on their home ground.
University Blues def. Williamstown CYMS by 51 points.
In a dominant display, Uni Blues pushed Williamstown down to ninth place on the ladder. Utilizing their home ground advantage to the maximum, Uni Blues showcased superior ball movement and skill efficiency. They managed an impressive 30 scoring shots throughout the game, capitalizing on 16 of those opportunities. A standout player for Uni Blues was A. Dowsley, who had a mammoth game, contributing half of his team’s goals.
On the other hand, Williamstown will be disappointed with their current position at this point of the season, struggling to maintain steady and consistent form. In the match against Uni Blues, they were completely outclassed and unable to match their opponent’s level of play. The team will need to regroup and urgently reassess their performance to improve their standings.
Looking ahead to Round 7, Uni Blues will face a competitive Caufield side. It promises to be an intense matchup between two strong teams vying for victory. On the other hand, Williamstown will aim to bounce back and secure a win against St. Bernards, hoping to regain their form and climb up the ladder. Both teams will be eager to make a statement and put themselves back on track this season.
St Bernards def by. St Kevins by 72 points.
St Bernards find themselves in crisis mode as their U19 team struggles to replicate the success of their seniors and reserves in the 2023 season. Despite their best efforts, they were outclassed by SKOB in this match. The team’s performance highlights their determination and effort, but they have been unable to translate it into positive results on the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, SKOB continued their dominance, comfortably sitting atop the ladder due to their strong performances and a successful pre-season. In the contest against St Bernards, H. James stood out with a brilliant outing, contributing three goals to SKOB’s victory.
Looking ahead, St Bernards will face the CYs in a game they have a good chance of winning. It presents an opportunity for them to regroup, refocus, and secure a much-needed victory to boost their confidence. On the other hand, SKOB will be facing a formidable opponent in Old Scotch. It promises to be a challenging match where SKOB will look to maintain their winning streak and continue their dominant form.
St. Bernards will be eager to address the issues faced by their U19 team and find ways to improve their performance moving forward. It is crucial for them to find a balance across all levels and align success throughout their club.
