SEASON 2022 - MAY 28
EDITORIAL
VAFA MEDIA TEAM As we move into the middle third of the season, and the cold of winter starts to grapple Melbourne, rest assured that the footy on-field is going to be heating up! While Premiership reunions, past-player luncheons and events for members continue to roll through the pre-game of the senior men’s or senior women’s matches which have been well attended and represented by members of the community. It’s terrific to see members, family and supporters coming back to VAFA footy in 2022, and VAFA Media is working parallel with this by expanding its digital footprint of Amateur Footy. The VAFA Media team is working diligently to keep all clubs, coaches, players and supporters informed and up-to-date throughout the week at VAFA.com.au, on the For the Love of the Game podcast, through our social media channels and across the weekend in conjunction with RSN927, My Sport Live and Gameday.
The RSN Carnival Match of the Day (supported by Mecwacare) takes centre stage on Saturday afternoon’s, firstly with a replay of the VAFA Podcast at 12pm before the 1 hour pre-game show “The Saturday Warm-Up”, talking all things from the week and interviewing members of the competing clubs ahead of the first bounce at 2pm.
To compliment each new edition of the Amateur Footballer Record released weekly, you can subscribe to the VAFA newsletter that arrives in your inbox every Friday.
The post-match show is dedicated to rounding out the game, while giving listeners every score from every section before bidding farewell at 5pm.
The VAFA Podcast, For the Love of the Game, now into its fifth season of production aims to inform, interview our clubs and add some humour to your week, with Joe Pignataro driving the bus that allows Brian Waldron to give his eccentric and sometimes controversial take on the game, and the people within it. Every now and then he even offers a little whisper from the Northern Spy.
Glen Scarborough continues the VAFA theme on 96.5 North West FM on a Sunday night with John Kanis, Anna Pavlou and many other distinguished guests. The partnership the VAFA has with Holmesglen continues to strengthen as our crop of reporters endeavour each week to cover every angle from their respective section as well as highlight captivating moments, magical milestones and take you inside the outcome of each match. Again, each club is encouraged to make contact with respective section reporters to enhance their sections coverage.
Due to the ever-expanding fixture, along with RSN and My Sport Live, we are broadcasting and live streaming more football than ever before. Approximately 12 hours of coverage is live streamed across every round of the VAFA.
Already this year our reporters have covered Melbourne Uni Women’s and West Brunswick senior men Pride matches. Fitzroy played host to Williamstown in Premier B on Anzac Day Monday. Glen Eira and Peninsula Old Boys met under the Saturday night lights in Division 2 while still to come Collegians face off against Old Melburnians this Friday night at Harry Trott Oval.
Clubs are encouraged to reach out to the VAFA Media team should they have an upcoming game they’d like to have the VAFA support with a live broadcast to make it an event and put their club in the spotlight. In addition to the match being live-streamed, bells and whistles are added included scoreboard graphics, sponsorship opportunities and the commentary team adding their own special flavour to each broadcast.
Being agile, and flexible in 2022, Ormond will host Hampton Rovers on Friday night, the weekend of Queen’s Birthday given the additional game that’s part of the Premier C Men’s fixture.
Each weekend, My Sport Live are streaming an additional two matches live with these games available to subscribers of the My Sport Live app and website (there is also a free trial available).
In 2022, we are putting our best foot forward to offer our clubs the best possible exposure with an eye to the future and growing the competition’s media footprint even further beyond this first fully completed season since 2019.
Clubs like Caulfield have expanded their own coverage with My Sport Live and stream every Premier Men’s game live, along with a select few Premier Women’s matches also.

That’s the short and the tall of it, for Rucks sake Goddard also spent time doing the aerial acrobats against Caulfield recently, is Guy Martyn ready to play that card again?
“It’ll be won at the source, within the contest” Every coach you speak to, at any level of footy, regularly offers the above insight when the question is put to them about where the game will be won.
Around the feet of the big men set yourself for Marcus Stavrou, Cauley Beetham and Dan Robinson to use their grunt and put their head over the footy, handballing to the outside run and spread from the contest. It won’t be made easy with the likes of James Carr, Marc James and Cam O’Shea wearing them tightly.
In William Buck Premier, we have been gifted in recent full and interrupted seasons to see high quality ruckmen, as well as elite level midfielders do battle. Ahead of the weekend’s matches we’re narrowing our focus to the source of those contests.
Sam Grimley (22 goals) has been the sharpshooter for Uni Blues in the absence of Alex Fasolo, Keiran Harper is back in the side while Tom Quinn, a regular small forward may find himself in the backline with Jack Hewitt and Xavier Richards running amok in recent weeks and helping to bury St Kevin’s in Round 7.
Friday night footy is upon us at Harry Trott Oval as Collegians aim to cut a run of four straight losses while Old Melburnians have put together their best start to the season in over a decade. The first contest you will see under the Friday night lights is Matt Singleton going up against Nick De Steiger. Two of the more experienced rucks in the competition, Singleton has been part of the Lions senior team since 2014, while De Steiger is closing in on 150 senior games for OM’s dating back to 2010.
There’s more than just midfield bragging rights up for grabs on Saturday, a spot in the top 4 is on offer, and for Uni Blues fans, gather what’s left of your fingernails and get set for another close finish. Over at Glen Huntly Oval, there hasn’t been a lot to smile about for either Caulfield Grammarians and St Bernard’s so far in 2022. The Fields have had to go deep into the depths of their ruck stocks this year, but the return of Declain Reilly and Jared Risol last week adds plenty of height and straightens them up.
When they’re finished wrestling for it in the air, the contest becomes even more mouthwatering as it hits the ground - the class of Viv Michie and Kenny Ong, the youthful exuberance of Josh Watson, and experience of Freddie Sullivan will try to outmuscle and outfight Gus Borthwick (the human wrecking ball), Cam Banfield, the smooth moving Nick Daish and the speedster Lachie Haysman.
Zac O’Halloran recently chalked up 150 games for St Bernard’s and has been a regular in the senior side for a long time. He is a thumping kick of the football, and has the ability to kick a long range goal. With the breeze in his back on Saturday, if he’s in range - forwards, don’t bother leading!
Forward of the footy Collegians have to get it into the hands of Dave Mirra and Ed Greene before Josh Freezer and Oscar Hosking can set up like a brick wall. At the other end Jackson Paine, Tom Baker & Al Armstrong will stand alongside Matt Warren, Luke McCleary and Matt Singleton.
Will Edwards makes everyone around him stand taller, the captain of the Fields. Jack Wallace is arguably the best 2IC in the game. While for St Bernard’s, prior to suspension Charlie Vague was likely leading the clubs best and fairest. He returns to the side on Saturday.
The purple army have owned OM’s in recent years, back at home with the crowd in full voice acting like a 19th man. Can they turn their fortunes around? Or does Paul Satterley’s midfield brigade outmuscle the opposition?
Both sides must win this game, it’s a classic 8-point game with the fight on to get out of the bottom 2.
At the Uni Main on Saturday afternoon, University Blues and Old Xaverians may be without their regular starting rucks in Ayce Cordy and Shaun Hampson. But, the “backups” have become a significant part of both sides.
In my mind, Harry Thompson is the VAFA’s Benjamin Button. He gets better each year, and looks younger. Maybe because he rotates his famous #23 between short and long sleeves so regularly.
Will Carrington has shouldered most of the load in the last three weeks for the Blues, while last weekend Tom Hart stood tall in the centre, being ably assisted by Ed Delany who looks more and more like Luke Jackson each time he plays. Hugh THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
He is the #1 man at Old Trinity, and one of the most consistent ruckman we’ve seen. Since his senior debut in 2

Round 1 of 2016, he has played 79 of a possible 94 games for the T’s. Goals haven’t been his forte, but floating down into defence with bucket hands has been his order of the day. For Old Scotch, they’ll combat big H with Jesse Castan as their starting ruck. The midfield of the Cardinals is led by Aiden Franetic, Brodie Easton and Hugo Brown. Mark Gnatt will have to call on one of those three, or another one of his young troops to play a shut down role on Sam Mason who’s in the hottest of forms, but you can’t stop them all. Alex Emery is another of the green and gold’s brigade who’ll be one to watch. Old Scotch will go into this contest with the memory of club legend and VAFA great John Bell in their hearts who sadly passed away earlier this week. No doubt there’ll be a few calls of “do it for Belly” when the ball is bounced on Saturday. St Kevin’s will be going bayside on Saturday in a top of the table clash that’s not to be missed. Old Brighton coach, Greg Hutchison won’t be able to call on Lochie Filipovic to do the ruck as he is still a couple of weeks away. The load will be mainly shouldered by Andrew Doyle as he comes up against the games youngest, brightest ruck star Angus Hart. Hart is currently taking each game in his stride, with no better VAFA mentor and master to learn off than the coach of St Kevin’s Anthony Lynch. Hart may well win it in the air, but Luke Winter, Tom Jok and Cam Hodges have got their work cut out for them with Harry Hill, Max Kennedy and Tom Fisher growling back at them when it hits the deck. If St Kevin’s were uncomfortable last weekend in the Toorak Park portable change rooms, they’re going to find the going equally challenging at Brighton Beach Oval with the chance of showers through the afternoon. The winner will sit on top of William Buck Premier come 5pm Saturday and whichever side that is, will no doubt be the main source of discussion in the wash up of Round 8.

Sharks go biting at the heels of Blacks, while the Roys springboard up the ladder There’s a distinct front runner in Premier B and as Brian Waldron has said on this week’s VAFA Podcast, it’s “theirs to lose” for University Blacks going forward. Beaumaris are proving to be another strong contender while Fitzroy have taken it all before them and climbed into the top four after the weekend.
Zac Calvez, the hero of a fortnight ago took the honours as the best player for Bede’s in the loss. They’ll need to regroup quickly or they’re in danger of the opening half of the season getting away from them. For De La Salle, they’re off to relax in Waldron’s backyard with a bye and get themselves right for a tilt in round nine at Brunswick St Oval.
Beaumaris have come back from the bye in round five in fine verve winning consecutive games, this week accounting for Ajax by 43 points. The victory for the Sharks and loss for Old Haileybury gives them a game buffer in second spot on the table.
Fitzroy are having quite the start to the season, an Anzac Day Monday victory, the unveiling of the Kevin Murray Stand and an 82 point win over Old Carey to propel them from sixth on the table, into the top four.
On Saturday, under the guise of Guy McKenna they led and extended their lead at every change with Joel Cusack (5 goals) the focal point in the forward line. Sam Gibbins (3) offered another avenue to goal while for the Jackers it was Kane Nissenbaum (2) and Remy Spicer (2) in his first senior match hitting the scoreboard.
38 scoring shots to 15 was the order of the day as 14 players kicked goals for the Roys on the way to a barnstorming win. Max Ellis kicked 2 in a best on ground display. It’s been a rough start to 2022 for Old Carey and the challenges get even tougher this weekend when they meet the undefeated University Blacks at home.
Callum Heath is putting together a strong block of form and will be a player opposition clubs are spending time trying to cover going forward.
Lachie Summers has been a shining light in an otherwise bleak start to the season, while half of the team is under the age of 23, they’re young, they’re learning and no doubt, like many young teams, the back half of the season will produce a stronger output than the front half.
This weekend the Sharks head bayside to Fearon Reserve facing off against Williamstown CYMS who will be fresh coming off a bye, while Ajax will aim to get back on the winners list as they head to Brindisi St Oval to tackle St Bede’s Mentone Tigers.
It’s been mentioned above that University Blacks are the frontrunners in the competition. They were challenged for much of the afternoon against Old Haileybury at Princes Park before the ladder leagues took a stranglehold of the game in the final quarter.
St Bede’s had a stirring win a fortnight ago against Old Haileybury and since then have run into a rampant Fitzroy (who’s form has been franked over the weekend), and now a De La Salle side starting to get their mojo going.
Leading by two points Blacks put the foot down with five goals to one to stretch the final margin 26 points when the siren rang out. The loss pushed Old Haileybury down to third spot with a 3-3 record, they are without Brede Seccull at the moment, arguably the best player in the competition, which is a significant hole to fill.
Playing for the Lasallian Cup, the Tigers were held to a single goal for the opening three quarters, and finished the day with three as De La ran away victors by 45 points, Brodie McLaughlin’s third game back this season netted a bag of five while Howard Persson was named best afield for the home side.

The next challenger awaiting Old Haileybury is the in-form Fitzroy, a battle between third and fourth on the table as we approach the halfway point of the season. The loser of this battle keeps the door ajar for St Bede’s, De La Salle, Ajax and even Williamstown. For the winner, a chance to stay in touch with Beaumaris in a fight for second spot.

The clash of the leaders lives up to expectations as another heavyweight returns to form Parkdale Vultures finally got their points tally moving for 2022 with a comfortable 31-point win over UHS-VU. Parkdale kicked the first six goals of the day through slick ball movement and certain defence and didn’t allow UHS-VU in for another major until the five minute mark of the last quarter, by which time the Vultures led by ten goals and the game was all over bar the shouting. To the credit of the vanquished hosts, they kept going right to the final siren, kicking seven goals in the fourth term, but it was too little, too late as Parkdale managed a couple more of their own to ensure that the wolves were kept from the door. Four players kicked two goals each for the Vultures, whose best were Harvey Johnston and Jarrod Peake. Brandon Jackson kicked two for UHS-VU, for whom Ben Dimattina led the way.
The clash between Mazenod and Hampton Rovers gave splendid entertainment to all that watched, Parkdale Vultures opened their account, and Ormond returned to the winners list after a barren month. Here’s what took place… A stirring contest at Central Reserve saw Hampton Rovers affirm their rights to premiership favouritism. The game ebbed and flowed with Rovers looking the more assured in the early exchanges, before Mazenod took the lead after quarter time. A five-goal second quarter allowed the Nodders to take an eighteen point advantage to the main break, and an even third stanza meant that they still had a fourteen point three quarter time lead. Mazenod’s ascendancy came on the back of a six-goal haul from spearhead Jack Caspersz, but Josh McPherson at the other end was busy accumulating six of his own as Hampton came roaring back at their hosts. Six goals to one in the final term allowed Rovers to take the lead half way through the quarter, and hold it until the end for a stirring 20 point victory. Matthew Fewings and Sam Michael were stand outs for Rovers, while Oscar Roberts and Cameron Morris led the way for Mazenod.
Monash Blues led all day against Old Mentonians, but needed to withstand a withering last quarter fightback from the charging Panthers before taking the points home from Keysborough with them. The game was set up in the first half, with nine goals to three setting up what looked like a winning 38 point halftime lead. Although Old Mentonians won the third term by a goal, there was no real hint of what was to come as the Panthers still had one heck of a hill to climb. Climb it though they did, and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility to suggest that another five minutes could have delivered them victory. They managed five goals in the final term, but Monash’s one in reply proved decisive as they held on to win by six points. Sam Simpson and Sam le Lievre kicked two each for Monash, for whom MacGregor Cameron was best afield. Tom Morecroft kept Old Mentonians in the battle with five goals, while Tom McCarthy and the consistent Darcy Brown both battled hard for the hosts.
Sometimes wins look pretty, at other times they need to be achieved due to old-fashioned grit and determination. The latter was one such occasion as Ormond needed all the determination that they could muster in scoring a 29-point win over Old Geelong. The Ormond defence worked their socks off in holding the Geelong boys to just one goal for the first half, whilst their colleagues further up the field managed five of their own. Four further goals without a miss in the third quarter gave them a 33 point break turning for home, and whilst Old Geelong scored two of the three last quarter goals this lead proved unassailable. The polish was added to Ormond’s graft by Tom Buckley with five majors. Joe Griffiths was the only multiple goal kicker for Old Geelong with two, whilst Will Horsfall and Max Lazarus were strong. For the victors none were better than Dae Szydlik and Jack McCartney. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Marcellin managed a fairly routine 76-point win over the plucky Preston Bullants at Ruthven Reserve. They took control early in the day and were never headed, and while the Bullants, as is their wont, didn’t give up the fight it’s fair to say that inaccuracy in the first three quarters cost Marcellin an even bigger win. A 47-point half time margin was always going to be too much for Preston to reel in, and a similarly dominant third quarter blew the margin out to 63 at the home turn. Preston were able to kick four last quarter goals to add respectability to their score, but six further goals to Marcellin meant that there were no late shocks. Lachlan Rush kicked five goals and Jeremiah Antypas four for Marcellin, while Elliot Atwell was their best on the day. Ethan Lowe with four goals and Alex Johnston with three led the charge for Preston. Old Ivanhoe bye

Remembering John Bell The Victorian Amateur Football Association mourns the death of John Bell, VAFA Life Member, who sadly passed away on Monday 23rd May 2022. Over its 130 years, the VAFA has had exceptional people whose connection and contributions have ensured its very existence. John Bell was an exceptional person. His 40 year association with the VAFA started at the Bulleen Templestowe Amateur Football Club where he was team manager for the U19’s, including a Premiership in 1982 (coincidentally against Old Scotch) and on committee as club Secretary. In 1990, being an old boy of Scotch College, he moved to the Old Scotch Football Club as team manager of the U19’s. Over the ensuing decade he filled a number of roles at Old Scotch including team manager of the seniors, club secretary and delegate to the VAFA. As a delegate John questioned, debated and provided sage advice on the state of football at club level. ‘Belly’, as he was affectionately known, joined the VAFA Board in 1999 and was Vice President from 2003 to 2008. He sat on various sub committees, notably the Permit Committee from 2000 to 2008 where he ensured, by his deliberations, the integrity of the Association. In 2009, John was awarded a Life Membership of the VAFA. VAFA AGM’s won’t be the same without Belly’s unmistakeable voice announcing himself “John Bell, Life Member” before throwing up a curly question. He was a keeper of the VAFA ethos. John was a committed historian with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the VAFA. Until recently he was part of the VAFA historical working party who have spent numerous hours sorting and cataloguing the vast amounts of documents and photographs amassed by the VAFA. Belly was a character with a wonderful sense of humour, scrupulously fair, generous of heart and a good bloke who cared. He loved the VAFA, its clubs and its people. The VAFA extends its sincerest condolences to John’s family and friends. He will be missed. It was fitting that John narrated our 125th year commemorative video. We urge everyone to watch it below and take some time to remember a true VAFA person. Vale John Bell.

Matt Suckling Retires Matt Suckling has taken up a job in Queensland and will be on the move very shortly. The decision means his time at Ormond comes to a close. It was an awesome win for the seniors and a perfect finish to Suckers time at Ormond. He was presented with an Ormond jersey signed by all the boys. We thank you Suckers for everything you’ve done at Monders and wish you all the best for the future.

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Kitty Smyth (Old Brighton) The VAFA congratulates Kitty Smyth from Old Brighton on being awarded the Round 7 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nominee. Kitty kicked 6 goals as part of Old Brighton’s thumping victory over Old Geelong which kept the Tonners in top spot on the Premier B Women’s ladder. What the club said: “Kitty has come to Old Brighton after a successful season with Sandy Dragons U/18’s and has approached open age football with great enthusiasm and maturity. She is a very creative player and has the knack of bobbing up in the right place at the right time and is deadly accurate around goal. Last week she had 4 majors on the board before we knew it and finished the day with 6 through hard running and creating space. In addition to playing some great footy all year Kitty has been fantastic around the group and is a pleasure to coach. She is a great listener and learner. From all of us at the Tonners congratulations on your nomination Kitty!”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Harvey Johnston (Parkdale Vultures) The VAFA congratulates Parkdale Vultures’ Harvey Johnston on being awarded the Round 7 men’s rising star nomination. Harvey kicked a goal and was named best on the ground in the Vultures first win in 1,009 days on Saturday. Beating UHS-VU by 31 points. What the club said: At the age of 16, Harvey currently plays U17’s for MordiallocBraeside as well as being listed as a bottom age player with Sandringham Dragons, where he will make his debut this weekend. He is a gun basketballer and played with the Sandringham Sabres, but has decided in recent times to focus on his footy. Harvey’s father is a proud past player of the Vultures, he takes after his father in height and ability. He is already a Collingwood 6 footer, and has great foot skills, and hand skills. Everyone at Parkdale congratulates Harvey on his nomination and can’t wait to watch his career develop at the Vultures. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

A weekend of inches in Division 1 Men’s Now here we go, a big one here. Taking a look at this game last week I tipped the upset here between Glen Eira and Old Camberwell, who this year have been one of the more inconsistent teams in Division 1. Glen Eira is a team that when they are on they can demolish teams, but when off can become a shell of their best, and thankfully for these men they were able to harness some of their best football and really test last year’s minor premiers in Old Camberwell. They commanded the lead early and never waivered running the game out as 39-point winners in an honestly impressive display of grit and fight, now leaving what I called the Coupe De Gras in Camberwell with a 2-4-1 record approaching the halfway mark of the year, leaving plenty of question marks for them to work out.
This shaped up to be a huge weekend in Division 1 Football with many of the top teams facing off for supremacy to see just who truly are the real deals at the midway point of the season. Let’s kick things off with the battle of the mid table, with Old Peninsula taking on Whitefriars in a game that realistically could affect the final spot of the finals later in the year, and it did not disappoint. Both teams got away with a hot start packing on plenty of goals in the first, but it would be Peninsula who would round out the half 13 points ahead. In the third it became a bit of an arm wrestle as that 13 point lead came back to single digits, with some of Whitefriars classier movers in Little and Feher bringing the team to life. In the end, Peninsula were able to do what they haven’t been able to for much of this year and close the game out, running away 21 point victors to nab their second win of the season.
Now here are the marquee games of the round, and it was all kicked off with the battle of Kew and Prahran Assumption, a game that was sure not to disappoint and absolutely did not. This was a really good test of Prahran who have been really one of the big lifters from the previous season, and with Kew nursing a 5-1 record heading into the game it was a big moment to take a run at the best and see how you go, and by only spotting Kew a 19-point advantage at 3 quarter time it was sure to be an absolutely cracking final term. Sore bodies and hard running provided some absolute fireworks win the final quarter and with their backs against the wall with a fast-finishing Prahran breathing down their necks, the boys from Kew held on for their best win of the year by a singular point, advancing to that 6-1 record and a second on the table…
The next game of the day was a battle of the bottom with Therry Penola taking on the winless St Mary’s Salesian out at John Pascoe Fakwner Reserve. Incredibly, the highest goal scorer of the round across any team came from Therry Penola as it absolutely drowned goals early with 14 in the first quarter alone. It just seemed like there must have been an agreement before the game to lay off the defense with 153 points scored to the half, and the man making the most of them was Brenton Eggleston who would aid the team in a 59 point victory, contributing 11 goals himself to the grand tally. This honestly seems like it would have been a great game to spectate given it was so high scoring and free flowing the entirety of the game.

The final game of the round and one that absolutely TRULY piqued my interest was the undefeated PEGS taking on who I think are the most dangerous side in the competition in Oakleigh. The only way I think I can describe this game is an absolute shoot out, with goals absolutely launching from everyone and everywhere, with the contest stretching no further than a 7 point lead throughout the whole 4 quarters. With the leading goal kicker for the comp in Aaron Cloke being unable to miss, up against a goal scoring regular in Thomas Saggio of PEGS the dual did not miss a shot, which was almost literal for Oakleigh kicking only 2 points after quarter time and 13 majors to cause the upset of the season, taking down the once undefeated PEGS in an absolute thriller that saw 9 goals for Cloke and 5 to Saggio, in what will be surely a season defining win for the men down at Oakleigh.

Heartbreak for the Magpies, as the Unicorns move to top spot Close finishes, a new leader at the top and a goal after the siren walked into a bar… Well they didn’t actually, but all three of those things did happen over the weekend. The top three teams are separated by percentage only and our early season front runners have been challenged in recent weeks, and not having it all their own way.
Aquinas return home to face Yarra Old and will be chomping at the bit to get back on the winners list after consecutive close-finishing losses, while Ivanhoe AFC face off against Manningham who are having a tough start in 2022. The Manningham Cobras were given a front row seat to the MHSOB football show on Saturday after the Unicorns bettered their own highest score for the season from Round 6 with a thumping win.
The VAFA-My Sport Live crew headed out to Ransford Oval on Saturday for the annual Pride Game hosted by West Brunswick. It was an absolute thriller against the cross town rivals Brunswick. A tight affair all afternoon saw the lead change four times in the final few minutes of the game.
12 goals to five in the first half was the set up, another 12 goals to one after half time was the nail in the coffin. Julian Eimutis is relishing his return home, another best on ground performance that included six goals, it would have been a long time since he last kicked a half dozen in a game. He had some friends too, Scott Braithwaite (5) and Ashan Wijayakumara (4) were part of the fun.
With the final kicks of the game, as the seconds ticked away, the Magpies were in front, however it was Lewis White the hero for Brunswick who took a big pack mark, and calmly went back to slot the match winning major. The victory keeps Tommy Hunter’s side at 6-1 although % has cost them top spot on the ladder. It will matter little for the moment as they savor the win! For the winners Aidan Pollock (3), Kristian Ciciulla (2), Paul Scamporlino (2) and Lewis White all had a hand in the goals while Matt Palmer and Ben Wilson were named amongst the best.
They’re a scary football side when they get moving the Unicorns, they have a full steam ahead mentality at the moment. 40 scoring shots last week, 47 scoring shots on Saturday. It’s the best possible way to hit a potential Grand Final preview this weekend against Brunswick. For the Cobras, Elliot Brandon-Jones (2), Anthony Raso (2) continued hitting the scoreboard and didn’t stop trying all afternoon, along with Luke Morris who continues to feature in the best.
Luke Buckler at West Brunswick kept his goal tally ticking along with another 2, Ben Hutchins added three goals to his double last weekend while Lee Stringer was the best. For the Magpies they’ll lick their wounds and face up to Power House this weekend while Brunswick will travel out to Woodfull-Miller Oval and face the new ladder leaders MHSOB in a top of the table affair.
Old Parade made light work of Power House at Garvey Oval with an impressive 11-goal opening quarter. From there, the game ground down to a halt with five goals to two being scored for the rest of the day.
The other top 4 battle on the weekend saw Aquinas take it right up to Ivanhoe AFC but a slow first half by the away team left them with a lot of work to do in the third and fourth term, falling short by 9 points. The Hoers set up the win in the opening half kicking six goals to two. James Course booted five in the win supported by Wesley Mayne and Nick Godfrey. Jordan Andonovski was named the best player on the ground for his role on the day. Aquinas regularly get goals from Matt Aver, he added another four on Saturday with Billy O’Loughlin taking his season tally to 10 after kicking three himself. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The victory keeps Parade at 4-3 on the table, equal with Aquinas and West Brunswick who are all fighting for fourth spot. Blair Healy kicked four for the victors, with Thomas Cooper named the best player on the ground. For Power House, Ben Circosta and Sean Scotland kicked a goal apiece and were named amongst the best. Round 8 has Power House back at home facing off against West Brunswick while Old Parade welcome Bulleen Templestowe who are hot-to-trot after another rousing victory. The Ants are playing footy in 2022 with real passion, enthusiasm and joy. Claiming a 44 point over Yarra Old Grammarians to round out the weekend. A six goal opening term gave Bulleen Templestowe early ascendancy. Despite the margin being cut to 20 points at half time, it didn’t worry the coaching staff as they took back the momentum in the third term. Jack Cowell was the focal point up forward booting six goals, he moved to 15 for the year, with David Dakin (3) working in tandem alongside Cowell. Thomas Richards was a part of the best. At the Bushrangers, Michael Scott (2) and Liam Marshall (2) hit the goalface. They’re finding it tough going at the moment too. Can they turn it around this weekend? Aquinas awaits them.

Richmond toast of the town as Bloods & Wickers set the benchmark South Melbourne Districts’ eleven individual goal kickers were too much for the Westbourne Grammarians, whose trek to Harry Trott Oval saw them leave 160-point losers. The Warriors were kept scoreless for the entire second half, while the 80-point buffer that the Bloods took into half-time literally doubled by the final siren. South Melbourne Districts’ Oliver Dufficy (8) has taken a rather large lead on the divisional goal kicking tally, while Jamie Brooker (3), Leigh Sfetkidis (2), Matthew Morrison (2), Samuel McGinn (2), Brendan Dufficy (2), and Hayden Portelli (2) all got in on the multiple-goal kicking party.
Winter might well and truly be here, but it didn’t stop the sun from shining on Saturday for Division 3 Men’s. Elsternwick and South Melbourne Districts still both seem like unstoppable forces after getting 100+ scores on the board in their wins, while finals for last year’s Division 3 Men’s top 2 is looking increasingly less likely seven rounds into the season. A six-goal final quarter has seen Richmond Central overrun Hawthorn at Rathmines Road Reserve by 11 points. Despite taking the lead into every break, the Hawks were seemingly unable to stem the tide as the Snakes’ late rally got them the four points. The scores were on the board early for both sides before five goals in the second quarter gave Hawthorn an extra edge. But it wasn’t to be for the home side, as even two five-goal hauls from Justin Raiti and Jack Kenny couldn’t save them, with the latter name his team’s best. Dane Roy put on a six-goal masterclass for Richmond Central to take top honours, and Jordan Miller (2) provided some support in the forward line, to be two of ten individual goal kickers.
It was an unfortunate crash landing for North Brunswick, who returned from their bye to welcome Elsternwick to Allard Park, and were subsequently beaten by 87 points. The Wickers got on the board early and never let the Bulls back in, with the margin up to 42 points by the main break. With the game all but done, the away side kept their foot on the accelerator to kick six final-term goals. Nicholas Lowrie (5), David Convery (5), Dylan Jones (3), and Julian Yeatman (2) were only five of the nine individual goal kickers on the day, with the former unsurprisingly topping the best on list. For North Brunswick, Aydan Marriner kicked two goals, but it was Luke Russell who played the best.
Parkside were in all sorts at Pitcher Park, going down to Canterbury by 64 points after failing to register a goal until the final term. Scoring appeared hard to come by in the first quarter, before the Cobras kicked four goals in the second to take a 31-point lead into the main break. Eight majors to zero all but sealed the deal for the away side, and not even a late rally could help the Red Devils. Thomas Lowden (5), Nicholas Szabo (2), Ryan Murray, and John Nicolopoulos (2) were Canterbury’s stars in front of goal, but it was Cameron Marshall who was named best on. For Parkside, Darcy Vickers, Shane Doherty, Jackson Hubbard, and Matthew Holden were the only goal kickers, but it was the latter who took top honours.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
The year so far has been a rollercoaster for Parkside, and it looks to only get bumpier as they head to Kevin Bartlett Reserve to face Richmond Central. The Snakes are likely to still be riding the high of their come-frombehind win in round seven, while the Red Devils will look to get back on the winner’s list.

La Trobe beat the unbeaten as the Tigers roar and the Falcons soar Box Hill North hosted Masala in an important clash for both teams with the Demons needing to get some momentum going and the Tigers wanting to continue what has been one of their best seasons in club history. The game started competitively with Box Hill holding a one-point lead at quarter time. With both teams even, one needed to take the lead and it was the Tigers who piled on 7 goals to 1 in the second quarter to take a 34 point lead into the major break.
second, but the Razorbacks struggled to get the game on their terms. La Trobe added another five goals holding a 64-point lead at half-time. La Trobe brought the same energy in the third term and piled on another six goals whilst keeping Swinburne to two, extending their lead to a whopping 90 points. The final quarter saw the Razorbacks put together a great quarter doubling their score as they kicked five goals. The day belonged to La Trobe kicking nine goals and running out winners by a mammoth 115 points, and in the process ending Swinburne’s undefeated run.
The third quarter saw the Demons make the margin slimmer but failed to capitalise on their scoring dominance having 7 more scoring shots only managing to kick 3 goals. The fourth quarter became a scrap with only three goals kicked for the term. It was the Tigers who ran out winners by 23 points in a wellcontested clash.
For Swinburne, Benjamin Cox and Joseph Zambelli kicked three goals each. For La Trobe, Riley Alexander kicked a mammoth 10 goals, staking his claim for the best forward in the competition. He was not alone though as Bryce Dowler and Tate Spiteri kicked five and four goals respectively. Swinburne’s best included Bradley Field, Brent Hodson & Zachary Cooke whilst the best for La Trobe were the previously mentioned Riley Alexander, Connor Mccredden and Riley Keath.
Up forward for Masala, it was Declan Fowler and Zac Pahos who led the way combining for seven goals, whilst midfielders Tom Williamson and Brandon Kelly also hit the scoreboard. Goalkickers for the Demons include Peter Cassidy-Marsh, Beau Parthenides and Cameron Liston. Masala’s best players included Matt Decarne, Buom Koang and the previously mentioned Tom Williamson and Brandon Kelly. The best for the Demons included Marcus Lorkin, Rowan Lawrence and Beau Parthenides.
Swinburne will look to regroup and rebound as they face an always game opposition in Eley Park. La Trobe will have the bye before they travel to Elgar Park to take on the Demons. In the final game of the round, Eley Park and Albert Park would face off with both teams looking to end their winless runs however only one team was able to snap the streak.
Box Hill North will now play Albert Park in what will be an extremely important matchup whilst the Tigers play host to the JOCS in what could be round 8’s match of the week.
The game started fairly competitive with Albert Park taking a 2 goal lead into the first break.
It was set up to be one of the biggest games of the season between Swinburne and La Trobe, however what we saw turned out to be quite the opposite. Despite being a dominant force, the Razorbacks are accustomed to slow starts, only kicking a goal in the first wouldn’t worry their faithful, however, the main concern is La Trobe kicking 8 goals to hold a 44-point lead at quarter time. A change was needed in the

Similar to Masala, the Falcons turned on the jets in the second quarter and added seven goals to their tally to the Sharks two to take a 50-point lead into half-time. It was a relatively even second half with the margin staying beyond 7-goals for the afternoon. Sam, aka Gug, joined the Hoers in 2017 and was runner-up in the reserves B&F the following season. Not only has he improved considerably as a player, earning games in the seniors, Sam is one of the reserves’ most important leaders. He revels in the physical side of the game and will happily put his body on the line for his teammates. Love your work Slammin’ Sam. You’re a hardcore Hoer.
Levi Lewis (Glen Eira)
100
Congratulation to Levi Lewis who has been an outstanding contributor firstly for the Monash Gryphons and now for the Glen Eira Gryphons. The forward 50 metre arc specialist knows where the goals are and has provided plenty of goals over his 100 games.
Ryan Spicer (St Bernards)
100
Best Wishes to Ryan Spicer on his 100 th game for the club this week. Another St Bernards Junior Ryan progressed through Colts and Under 19 ranks before developing into a regular in the Ressies line-up. A tough on baller /utility Ryan, nicknamed ‘Bruiser’ for his uncompromising attack on the footy, Ryan’s commitment to the club was deservedly recognised this year when he was named in the leadership group. Well done Ryan!
Brendan Ryan (St Bernards)
200
Every club needs a Brendan ‘Chicka’ Ryan. A St Bernards Junior, Brendan played in back to back U/19 Premierships (2002/2003) before making his senior debut in 2005. It’s taken Chicka a while to rack up the 200 due to a few years spent overseas. A natural leader and organiser, Chicka has been playing and coaching in the Three’s in recent seasons. Possessed with a big ‘motor’ the veteran Chicka is still getting a kick and off field is simply one of those blokes that are a huge part of the fabric of our club. Well done Chicka!

Mat Mason (Monash Blues)
200
A massive effort and a huge congratulations to Mat ‘Showstopper’ Mason for the 200 games at the Monash Blues. His huge contributions to the club and to the individuals that have played with him run a lot deeper than that number.....it doesn’t tell the story of the day he was on one of his trade-mark third and fourth effort attempts, dragging down the ball-carrier with a last-ditch tackle, only to look down and see his teammate on the ground with ball in hand. Or, the massive captain’s effort of zero touches as a starting mid in a close loss, one of the rare days that the show stopped.. Let’s all hope he can trump these efforts today! He’s spanned a few of generations of playing groups and will be renowned as an in-and-under player who always puts in a massive effort, consistently setting the energy in the group. No doubt one of the most popular players to have come through the club, his off-field contributions will be remembered and he will share a lot of great memories with a lot of people he played with. All of the current group and MBFC alumni will enjoy watching him run around today and hope that he gets all of his top three loves ticked off. Well done Dean.
Evan Lloyd (West Brunswick)
200
Congratulations to West Brunswick’s President Evan ‘Red’ Lloyd who on Saturday ran out for his 200th game. Red joined the club in 2007 and slotted straight into a strong West Brunswick side, and in only his second year at the club, won his first flag with the club in the 2008 premiership. In 2012, he was appointed Senior Co-Captain alongside current senior coach Lou Martin and former-president Anthony Gibson. He secured his second Senior Premiership with the 2015 flag, in a season he was also recognised as joint 3rd best and fairest. In 2021, Red was named in the back pocket of the WBAFC Team of the Decade 2010-2019 – one of only two players in the side to have played senior footy at the club in each year of the decade. Off the field, he has worked tirelessly over the past 10 years across a number of positions, with not one, but two stints as club vice president. Congratulations on 200 games, Red. Truly one of West Brunswick’s modern greats.
Tom ‘Rock’ Caven (St Bernards)
250
Huge salute on his 250 th from all at ‘the snakepit’ to one of St Bernards and the VAFA’s ‘all-time’ greats Tom ‘Rock’ Caven. A St Bernards junior, Tom won our U/19 B&F before making his senior debut in 2007. Tom’s amazing CV includes being named Full Back in St Bernards ‘team of the half century’, a dual Senior B&F’s, he was a regular VAFA Big V State Rep, Captained the 2015 A Grade Premiership side and a member of our 2018 B Grade Premiership team. Tom has done it all at the highest VAFA levels and great clubman that he is Tom is now helping out (and still starring) with our Thirds. Super player, super clubman and super bloke. Well done Rock!

Kew and St Kevins continue in the race for top spot a chance to close the gap early on but were inaccurate. In a tightly contested last quarter where Old Xaverians could sense an upset, neither team were able to kick a goal and so it was West Brunswick who held on for the win.
Kew showed early on in the match between them and St Marys Salesian why they are hunting for the top spot on the ladder from St Kevins. It was a blistering start in the first quarter for Kew, that saw them continuing to show the attacking brand of football they have displayed so far this year that has seen them now win 7 games this year. The first quarter saw Kew pile on 4 goals and keep St Marys scoreless. The impressive display from Kew continued throughout the game, and it saw them go into halftime with a massive 62 point lead. The defensive pressure throughout the game from Kew saw them keep St Marys goalless until the last quarter. It was an all round team effort in the game from Kew, from their 14 goals they had nine different goal scorers. The win also saw Kew take their percentage up to 346 which makes their fight for the top spot closer than ever.
With Kew breathing down their necks St Kevins were needing a win to keep the top spot on the ladder and with Caulfield Grammarians being chased by a hot West Brunswick this game had consequences for both teams. It was St Kevins who brought the heat early but Caulfield stuck right with them, matching their pressure throughout. Caulfield had the better of St Kevins early in front of goal and were able to take an early lead. The ladder leaders weren’t going down easily though and despite having more attempts at goals their inaccuracy kept Caulfield right in the game. Caulfield raised their tackling pressure as the game went on and some excellent tackles resulted in them creating turnovers, but they were unable to break through the St Kevins wall of defence. St Kevins proved why they are the competition leaders and kept Caulfield scoreless in the final term and claimed victory to stay on top of the ladder heading into round 8.
It was a beautiful sunny autumn day at Mcalister oval when West Brunswick hosted Old Xaverians for their First ever Pride Match. With the oval decked out in Pride colours and West Brunswick in their Pride guernseys, it was up to them to get the win over Old Xaverians to hold on to fourth spot on the ladder. West Brunswick were strong early on and heaped the pressure onto Old Xavs limiting any opportunity they may have had to score. Going into halftime West Brunswick had themselves a handy 21 point lead. After the main break it was all West Brunswick, and they were looking to seal the win early but old Old Xaverians weren’t going down without a fight. Kicking two quick goals they kept themselves right in range. It would all come down to the final quarter and Old Xaverians had

Melbourne Uni have been competitive this season since joining the Premier Division and with a top 4 spot being a possibility their game against Marcellin was a must win. It was evenly matched early on with Marcellin keeping Melbourne Uni underwraps. Some strong play late in the quarter and a goal right on the quarter time siren saw Melbourne Uni in the lead. In the second Marcellin scored early to keep Melbourne Uni on the defensive. Some strong work out of the centre from Melbourne Uni put them ahead in possession but at half time there would be just 2 points between the two sides. No one was able to take control in the third quarter and it was Marcellin who scored the only goal to take a small lead into the final term. Marcellin was a force to be reckoned with early on, controlling possession and keeping the ball out of Melbourne Uni’s hands. There were some small mistakes from Marcellin that Melbourne Uni were able to capitalise on and quickly take the lead. A strong defensive effort for the remainder of the quarter for Melbourne Uni saw them hold Marcellin to just 1 point in the final term whilst kicking 3 goals themselves to come out winners.
