SEASON 2023 - June 3
Challenges of the travel bug!
From the numerous discussions I have had with Club representatives, it is abundantly clear that the impact of COVID will continue to have a flow on effect on participation levels in season 2023.
Having been locked down for the majority of 2020 and 2021, followed by uncertainty and some travel restrictions still impacting 2022, this year is the first time in four years when many of our youth in this state were able to confidently make travel plans.
The northern summer appears to be a huge attraction to many of our VAFA players who have booked overseas trips this year. And no one can begrudge them for taking the opportunities that they have been denied until this point.
It’s acknowledged though, that the unprecedented volume of those players departing our shores will prove to be an enormous challenge for many of our Clubs this year. Stories of 17+ players from a single Club heading away for one, two or more months is not an uncommon tale, and many a VAFA coach is nervous about their team’s performance as we head into our winter without their full squad available.
In some instances, the impact will be felt heaviest by those teams without strong player numbers in reserve. No doubt, despite their best recruiting efforts, we can expect to see some teams struggle to field full teams at times.
In this regard, I have been super impressed by some recent great examples of Clubs already collaborating and sharing ‘excess’ players, to ensure everyone was getting a weekly game of football in, where possible.
There is another lever available in the women’s programme to help overcome the loss of players. Women’s teams have the ability to share players with an upcoming opposition team each week, in order to even up numbers
Jason ReddickCEOand provide a competitive match day experience for everyone.
Whilst the odd coach may see an opportunity to bag 4 points and a huge percentage gain, there is a bigger picture focus that needs to be taken (especially in the lower grades where the impact of falling player numbers is felt most). It is critical that we don’t have teams with reduced numbers getting belted on the scoreboard each week and ultimately leaving some players not wanting to continue, which then leads to the team being unable to field a team for the rest of the season. That then leads to byes and impacts the players in all the other Clubs. Again, the majority of Clubs understand this scenario and are more than willing to share their players when requested.
These supportive actions typify the tremendous VAFA spirit that exists in our competition, and I commend all those Club leaders who are facilitating this. Without your efforts, hundreds of players would be missing out on games of football each week, which can often lead to many of those players being ‘lost’ to the game permanently. And nobody wants that.
Of course, every cloud has a silver lining, and the departure of some senior players in the higher grades will provide earlier than expected opportunities for those players who are required to ‹step up’ and fill the breach. This fast-track development can be priceless for many and the turning point in enabling them to reach their potential, to the extent that the returning travellers may have to work their way back through the twos in order to reclaim their original spot. Once again, a competitive environment is healthy for everyone.

Brace yourselves, the winter grind is coming
Heading into the first weekend of winter in Melbourne our William Buck Premier clubs are juggling injury lists, and the upcoming European sojourns to chase the sun.
The RSN Xtra commentary team is not alone in this as Josh Heriot follows suit, excited to eat the strawberries and cream at Wimbledon, trying to pick the quaddie at Royal Ascot, see the Aussies knock over the Poms and take plenty of photos of old buildings.
For the rest of us, who are lucky enough to be staying in the city of footy, we’ll no doubt be treated to high pressure, high octane contests with this next block of the season determining the lay of the land in the run to the finals.
Shop early, and avoid the rush. Wins, and strong form here is equally as important as the final month of the home and away season. The reigning premiers St Kevin’s have done that and wouldn’t be too fazed about having lost two games in a row. However, the margin and inability to stop the momentum of Collegians has left Plugger Lynch scratching his head, at the same time embracing this challenge. They wouldn’t want to make it three in a row when they face the in-form University Blues at the Melbourne Uni Oval.
The last time they did lose three in a row, rounds 15, 16 and 17 of 2016. The only season since 2011 where the club hasn’t reached the finals series in Premier B or the VAFA’s top-flight.
This is a genuine toss of the coin battle, the Blues have put up three straight wins beating Old Brighton, Collegians and Caulfield. Familiar names Ayce Cordy, Tom Young, Cam O’Shea are playing as well as ever.
Marty Gleeson, the best player at the Uni Blues is more unlikely than likely to take his place having finished last week’s game on crutches with ice on his knee. Guy Martyn has told VAFA Media Sam Grimley and Dane Crognale won’t return before the mid-season bye.
The midfield match up of Ed Ziebath and Luke Winter, two young guns will excite those watching on. Al Richards running one way, Charlie Furphy running the other. And, James Paterson in front of the Blues goal, while Paddy Kerr is threatening to bust a game open.
The RSN Xtra Match of the Day heads to Camberwell Sports Park. Old Scotch has stunned everyone who is on the outside of the Cardinals. Internally this is what they’ve been building towards since promotion after the 2019 B-Grade Grand Final.
Five wins in a row. The one loss they’ve experienced, against Collegians by 10 points. University Blacks have had patches of their best footy across the first seven rounds. Last weekend it all came together.
While Josh Steadman is capable of exposing the Cardinals in the ruck division, the midfield under Mark Gnatt will be at his feet waiting to scoop up every crumb. With so much focus on the youth at Old Scotch, this is a battle of the wise heads, Andrew Jelbart and Aiden Franetic against Louis Vescio and Lachie Knight.
Campbell Moorfield and Joel Ernest have been enormous for the Blacks in their rise into William Buck Premier. One of them will have the tough task of clamping an in-form James Tarrant. 21 goals for the year, averaging three goals a game.
Blacks cannot afford to let the impressive work of last week go to waste, this is a prime opportunity to keep the momentum going and knock the current ladder leaders off their perch.
These two sides are renewing hostilities for the first time since the 2019 B-Grade Preliminary Final, a classic at Elsternwick Park. On that day, much like this season, the Cardinals ran out the full 120 minutes. If Uni Blacks are to walk off the ground winners, they’ll have to do exactly that this Saturday.
I’m excited for what’s to come at Elsternwick Park. Old Melburnians have won two games in a row and the tables are starting to turn. Old Brighton have experienced the high of beating St Kevin’s at the TH King Oval, before going down to Old Scotch seven days ago.
Dan Donati is balancing the European trips, the injury list and the ebbs and flows of VAFA footy that he knows so well. Paul Satterley’s OM’s are working their way back into the season, one weekend at a time.
Jackson Paine is the club’s barometer. This year he is proving he doesn’t need to kick a magical goal to lift the side, he can do so with a big pack mark, a centre clearance or a bone-crunching tackle. His teammates thrive off ‘Jacko’ and they’ll need to feed off his energy if they’re to knock off the Tonners.
Sam Collins will have the job nullifying the influence of Tom Baker who kicked eight goals against Old Haileybury. Tom Blamires was back in the side last week for his second appearance of the season. As was Max Lohan who will add further strength to the backline of the Tonners.
Both sides are missing key personnel - Harry Hill, Hamish Dick are the obvious two for Brighton, Ed Nicholls and Charles Dowling have been the playmakers for OM’s throughout the first part of the season. OM’s have used the turnover game to their advantage in the past fortnight. If they’re to keep on that trajectory it will go a long way to making it three wins on the bounce. Old Brighton will be hell bent on turning the tables from last week’s performance.
Collegians, there was so much to like about the performance against St Kevin’s. Jared Rivers’ men showing the round six performance against Uni Blues was an aberration. They were clinical from the opening bounce, and didn’t let up.
Sam Hibbins put in his best game of the season, owning the midfield. Supported by Viv Michie, King Kenny Ong and Gentleman Jim Bazzani. Irrepressible. And, while handing out praise to the Lions midfield, Will Mayhood has been exceptional in the ruck.
He is undersized compared to his opponents, without Ben Woodful he has given everything he has to every contest and if you’re Greg Hutchison, looking for a back-up ruckman who can play other positions around the ground, strongly consider the Bear in the Collegians centre square.
Caulfield Grammarians by their own admission are in a transition year. Will Bowes, the club President said as much to VAFA Media last Saturday. However, there’s always something you can take from these games, while the transition occurs.
Oscar Roberts will have his work cut out for him at the Harry Trott Oval against the likes of Ed Greene, Alex Lukic, Teigan Otter and Will Pocknee. He won’t die wondering. Oscar Ursini can present as a ‘nuisance’ for the Collegians defence. Julian Dobosz, if he gets it within 60 metres of goal, let him launch.
The expectation is that Collegians win. And, they should. It’s an opportunity for them to put another side in the bottom four to the sword, being one of four teams going into this weekend with fi ve wins, and two losses, another boost of the percentage to stay ahead of that pack will be pivotal in the run home.
Old Xaverians will welcome Old Haileybury to Xavier College on Sunday this weekend. Due to ground availability, James Byrnes’ side has an extra day to prepare for the bounce back after last week’s loss to Uni Blacks.
Old Haileybury went goal-for-goal with the OM’s last weekend. In the past fortnight, Daniel Ward’s side haven’t had a problem getting the ball inside 50 and having enough looks at goal. Lachie Treverton, the lynchpin from clearances to assist in getting the ball moving their way.
Not all seems right at the moment with the Old Xaverians, the opening month of 2018 was the last time the red and black mafia dropped four games in a row. A win this weekend won’t wallpaper over the cracks, but it will go a long way to rectifying this season and putting them to an equal win-loss ratio.
Marcus Stavrou’s return last week is an important inclusion, three goals and part of the best, he will be even better for the run coming into this week.
Charlie MacIsaac and Ben Bilston-McGillen may hold the key to unlocking the Xav’s forward line, fi ve goals between them last weekend. Both capable of being fire-starters and momentum builders.
These two sides haven’t met since 2011. It’s been a long time between drinks. And they’ll have to wait an extra day for their meeting to occur.
The winter grind is about to kick in, Saturday (and Sunday) afternoon around the grounds with a scarf, old coat, a beanie and a hot chocolate to keep warm while watching the best 10 teams in the competition battle it out. Where else would you want to be?

Last year’s grand finalists fall down the ladder, whilst two contenders take a hit
Caulfield Grammarians continued their fall down the ladder this weekend, losing to Coburg by the narrowest of margins. Meanwhile, the top four played off against each other this weekend, with Kew and St Kevins proving they are the real deal, knocking off the other contenders in Old Scotch and Collegians.
Coburg secured a narrow 2-point win over Caulfield Grammarians, with a goal in the last quarter putting them ahead for the first time in the game and most importantly at the final siren. Caulfield got on the ball early, kicking three goals in the first quarter, but only managing another two for the game which ultimately cost them the match. Last year’s grand finalists have now fallen to seventh on the ladder as Coburg jumps up to sixth.
Stephanie Filbay and Sheridan Bennett were the Lions’ best, both kicking two goals, whilst Marguerite Purcell was Caulfield’s best. Next up, Coburg will host West Brunswick in what should be a close game, whilst Caulfield will host a tough opponent in Collegians. Having beat SKOB and Caulfield over the last few weeks, Old Scotch would have come into this clash as the favourites and looking for their fourth win in a row. However, Kew spoiled their party and snapped their winning streak. A two-goal to one second quarter was ultimately the difference, with Scotch playing catch up for the rest of the match and falling one goal short. Kew now take retain spot, whilst Old Scotch falls to fourth.
Mia Caffry was best on for Scotch, whilst Amelia Dawborn was Kew’s best after kicking two goals. Tennille Nash also kicked two goals for Kew. Lily Barr was once again in Kew’s best for the fifth time this season. Next week, Kew will take part in a top of the table clash against St Kevins in what will be the match of the round, whilst Old Scotch will travel to take on Fitzroy.
SKOB returned fresh from the bye with a dominant showing over Collegians, winning by 38 points. Collegians failed to score a goal for the game, managing only five points and none after half time. This had promised to be an exciting match between two top-four teams however, unfortunately did not live up to the hype. Collegians only move to third on the ladder, whilst SKOB are back in second place.
Emily Sainty was Collegians best. Zara Guss was SKOB’s best, whilst Emily Condon was once again in the best for the fifth time this season. Next up, Collegians will travel to Glen Huntly Oval to play Caulfield in the morning, whilst in the afternoon, St Kevins will host Kew in a top of the table clash.
West Brunswick recorded their third win in a row against Melbourne Uni Women’s, only allowing them to kick one goal, which came in the final quarter. The Magpies set themselves up for the game in the first quarter, scoring 32 points in the first quarter to Melbourne Uni’s zero. It was a pretty dire affair for the rest of the game, with a total of 17 points between the teams scored after quarter time.
Sophie Stewart scored three goals for the Magpies, whilst Isabella Robson was Melbourne Uni’s sole goal scorer. Taylah Watson was best on for Brunswick whilst Nell Washington was Melbourne Uni’s best. Next up, West Brunswick play Coburg whilst Melbourne Uni Women’s have the bye.

AJAX claim their first win as Trinity hold on in a nail-biter.
Round 7 saw AJAX produce a stunning victory to bring up their first win of the season with every team but Monash Blues with a win on the board. However, the last few rounds have seen the Premier B ladder stay relatively stable with little change.
St Bernards have made it seven wins in a row as they kept Old Geelong to just three goals for the afternoon to win by 65-points. Old Geelong was restricted to one goal after quarter time with the Snowdogs defence on full display to stifle the Geelong attack. Luke Di Lozio and Zac Overman were busy in the forward half for St Bernard’s with both kicking three goals with the Snowdogs finishing with eight individual goal scorers. Meanwhile Matthew Sauro produced a best on ground performance for the Snowdogs.
Old Geelong’s Sam Harrison fought gallantly for his side as he was named their best player but the Snowdog’s once against showed a touch more polish and class with their biggest test of the season to come this weekend.
It’s becoming more of a habit of reporting on Fitzroy winning and they did just that over the weekend. It was to be their toughest challenge yet in terms of a match up, but they delivered the goods to beat Beaumaris by 42 points. Ted Clayton was in scintillating form with five majors and named best on ground for the Roys. He has now kicked 13 goals for the season and trails Charlie Faubel (16 goals) as the clubs leading goal kicker. Donovan Toohey was also strong for the Roys.
Fitzroy along with St Bernards, remain undefeated and two games clear of the Sharks placed in third spot on the ladder. For Beaumaris, they were assisted by Benedict Andrews who hit the scoreboard with two majors with Joseph Nowell their best players. Callum Heath also continues his sensational form this season with another game amongst the best for the Sharks.
De La Salle responded well after their Round 6 loss to the Tigers with an 11-point win over Williamstown CYMS. They were able to start in tremendous style with six goals to one in the first quarter to get the early jump and expand a margin to 36 points. However, it was quick response from Williamstown as they then piled on six goals in the second quarter to cut the margin back to 13 points.
De La Salle were able to hold despite a further five goals to Williamstown in the last as they generated a late fightback. Archi Manton was in fine form with six goals and named as Williamstown’s best player with Liam Conway also kicking two majors. Meanwhile, for De La Salle Josh Cumberlidge was named their best as he also kicked two goals along with Luke Lloyd with booted four and Adrian Indovino who kicked three.
The closest game of the round saw Old Trinity prevail by just two points against St Bedes/Mentone out at the Daley Oval. It was an incredibly tight contest for much of the afternoon with scores level at the main break before Trinity were able to pull clear by 20 points at the final change. The Tigers kicked four last quarter goals to give Trinity a big scare, but it wasn’t quite enough to square things into their favour.
Braydon O’Toole led the charge up forward with Michael Lewis as they both kicked three goals with Nick Grech their best. For Trinity, Dominic Payman was their best with three majors along with Alex Emery with two. Oliver Scott was also strong as he continues his solid form this season.
The highlight of the weekend was seeing AJAX claim their first victory of the season against Monash Blues. It was a terrific game of football with a high scoring affair coming down to just 6 points. The Blues led at both half time and three-quarter time, but AJAX were always within touching distance with four final quarter goals. AJAX finished with 11 individual goal scorers with Richie Simon leading the way down forward with three. Kane Nissenbaum had a best on ground performance along with two majors for AJAX, while Hutch Davis also proved to be influential for the side.

For Monash, Mitch King was huge down forward with four goals along with Riley Smart and Nicholas Darling who both kicked three. Will Snookes was the Blues best who battled hard throughout the afternoon in what ended to be a terrific contest.
Round 8 will be a telling round for Premier B with both undefeated sides in Fitzroy and St Bernard’s facing off against each other. The Roys will have to travel to the Snakepit in what will be the most anticipated game of the season so far. Another clash worth keeping an eye on will be De La Salle and Old Geelong as they do battle out at Waverley Oval. Despite their loss on the weekend Old Geelong had been finding some consistency in their game and the round 8 clash will test both sides. Monash Blues will face St Bedes/Mentone as they look to claim their first win of the year. The final two games will see Williamstown up against Trinity and with Williamstown showing so much competitive spirit this season it could be a close contest. Beaumaris will face AJAX in the final match of the round with the Sharks looking to bounce back after their recent loss to Fitzroy.

ANOTHER Prem C draw ends PEGS’ winning streak
In the last four weeks of the Premier C Men’s competition, we have miraculously seen three draws as Round 7 added the competition’s latest.
Carey Sports Complex bore witness to an absolute thriller that will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the season’s best games. PEGS found themselves trailing by 25 points at 3-quarter time to Old Carey, requiring a difficult comeback to maintain their unbeaten streak. As the clock ticked down and Carey held a narrow 7-point lead, PEGS’ Darby Scott took matters into his own hands. Scott showed off his tremendous skill, receiving a handball amidst heavy congestion and quickly booting an incredible goal, narrowing the margin to just one point.
After Carey was able to briefly hold on, PEGS big man Patrick Macdonough seized a critical intercept mark on the half-back flank. With only 15 seconds remaining, PEGS quickly moved the ball through the middle of the ground, getting it to a contest 50 meters out from goal. The ball came to ground, and it was once again Darby Scott who emerged, drawing a high tackle with mere seconds left. With the chance to kick for goal from 50 meters after the siren, Scott’s shot resulted in a behind, resulting in a tied game and ending PEGS’ impressive win streak, however holding onto their undefeated record.
Following their second draw for the season, Carey’s record stands at a difficult-to-fathom 2-2-2 as they find themselves in a respectable position in the middle of the table. On the other hand, PEGS remains atop the standings but now holds only a half-game lead.
In another significant fixture, Mazenod triumphed over Parkdale in a scrappy encounter at Central Reserve. With both teams struggling to find the goals in the first half, Mazenod’s three-goal burst in the third quarter proved decisive, leading them to a crucial 16-point victory.
Mazenod now finds themselves just half a game outside the top four, heading into their upcoming bye. Meanwhile, Parkdale clings to their top-four position but will need a win soon to solidify their standing being only half a game in.
Old Ivanhoe showcased their dominance with a comprehensive 55-point victory over the Hampton Rovers. Although the Rovers were within reach, trailing by less than five goals at three-quarter time, Old Ivanhoe’s dominant six-goal final term sealed their fate.
Hampton, now sitting just ten points outside the top four, faces an uphill battle in turning their season around. In contrast, Old Ivanhoe has solidified their spot in the top four.
The match between Old Camberwell and Ormond was called off during the third quarter due to a player sustaining a suspected spinal injury. With player safety as the top priority, the game was halted for an extended period before both teams agreed to conclude the match with its existing scoreline. Fortunately, the player has been cleared of any serious damage and is on the road to recovery. Camberwell will walk away with the four points as they led by 32 points at the time of the injury.
After a bye week, Marcellin OC looks to return in Round 8, eager to salvage their season and climb off the bottom of the ladder. They face a challenging task as they take on Ivanhoe on Sunday.
Round 8 presents several enticing matchups, including a clash between the fourth-placed Vultures and second-placed Camberwell which is set to unfold at Gerry Green Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Incident cuts Old Camberwell-Ormond clash short
It was a worrying end to the match between Old Camberwell and Ormond last Saturday, cut short mid-way through the third term due to a serious injury to Ormond player Josh Levine. Thankfully, he has since been given the all-clear and returned home from hospital – where he’s pictured here giving the thumbs up. Ormond President Richard Simon said he “couldn’t be more proud of the commitment to Josh from the senior players and staff that they wouldn’t leave the ground until Josh does, and then to see a dozen or so in the social rooms afterwards to meet our commitment and respect to opposition team - always Ormond!”
Old Trinity and St Bedes/Mentone stand united with VAFA Umpires
Both Old Trinity and St. Bede’s Mentone Tigers lined up before last week’s senior game to walk out together with the Umpires in a show of respect and unity for the work that the VAFA umpires do every weekend. Both clubs acknowledge their great contribution to the game and will not condone any anti-social behaviour towards the Umpires. We stand united with them.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Maddison Bamert
The VAFA congratulates young up and comer Maddison Bamert from De La Salle who has been nominated as the Round 7 Rising Star. Maddy was named best on ground on the weekend, in just her second game of Senior footy, and rounded out the day with a goal as well.
What the club said:
“Maddy came to our club late in the preseason due to other sporting commitments but immediately hit the ground running and endeared herself to her new teammates and got herself involved in the club as well. She hasn’t grown up playing club football, only ever playing at her school Korowa Anglican Girls School, a place several of her teammates attended with her.
On the field, Maddy is a powerful midfielder/forward who has the ability to break the lines and use the ball well, and at 19 years of age has enormous growth in her. She has only been able to play a couple of games so far this season but is setting herself for a big second half of the season. In both games she has played, she has been named in the best players; her first game against UHS-VU she was named De La’s second best on ground and in Round 7 against Wattle Park she was the best player on the ground for De La Salle. She is a key contributor to an emerging young group at De La Salle and we can’t wait to see what Maddy will be capable of for years to come.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Rogan Kitts
The VAFA congratulates Rogan Kitts from Oakleigh Amateur Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 7. Kitts has had a strong start in the seniors, being named in the best on multiple occasions, and produced a best-on-ground and 1-goal performance from the weekend!
What the club said:
“Rogan at the age of 17 has adapted to senior football with class, he has brought great energy and flare to the group that the other players love him for.
Since making his debut in Round 1, Rogan has been a consistent performer for the team working through the forwards as well as the wing, he has been able to hit the score board most weeks.
His consistent form at senior level as well as school football has seen Rogan been listed at the Sandringham Dragons in the NAB League where we hope he gets a game soon.
A quality young man who has a bright future ahead of him.”
2-point nail biters are the theme of the round for Old Peninsula and Prahran
Round 7 delivered a few exciting clashes; namely The Pirates scraping home with a gutsy two-point win and Prahran also winning by two to the Bears.
Kew FC took on Prahran at Victoria Park, on a ground that was meant to deliver a lot of contested ball, with muddy conditions in the middle. Both teams were eager to get off the blocks with Prahran producing the early momentum kicking three goals. Prahran big man Rory Brodie was influential in the midfield giving his players first use. The Bears through Luka Argent, Jake Evens-Boulter and Youngster and emerging star Mischa Fraillion took the game to the opposition as they tried to snatch back the momentum.
With Lachlan Brown bagging four goals, the Bears were set to come back to take a lead in the game at 3 quarter time after Prahran started strongly. Dependable midfielder, James Musster, was another pivotal player for Prahran; his invasive play and football smarts were key for them to stay in front. The game went right down to the wire with Prahran scraping home in the end, winning 10.13 73 to Bears 10.11 71.
John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve played host to one of the two blockbusters for Round 7. It was a big game from the Therry Penola Lions and the Old Peninsula Pirates. Therry were aiming to get back on the winners list after their game against Oakleigh last week. It was the Pirates that started the game well with three early goals by their forwards. Ben Williamson was exceptional, and he led by example.
On the other hand, despite the Lions slow start, forward weapon, Kane O’Hallaron, kept them in the game kicking a handy three goals. Joel Costello was also pivotal as he tried to kick start something for Lions in the second half and almost helped them over the line. But it wasn’t to be, with the Pirates coming away with the four points in an absolute belter.
The thrillers just kept coming, when Preston took on the Ivanhoe in a classic at Preston on Saturday. The Bullants were not messing around this week blasting out of the gates, booting five early goals to Ivanhoe’s two. Alex Johnston was integral in the forward line as one of Prestons best players on the day, kicking a handy four goals to keep the Magpies at bay in the first term. The Magpies were not done, and it showed, as they pinched the margin to two points at the long break. Ash Close and Ethan Hunt were both pivotal in keeping the Bullants grounded in the second term.
Ethan Wild, the master stroke of the Magpies game, delivered a best on ground performance to really set the foundation for the Magpies. The Bullants had Rory Howard and James King both making the most out of their opportunities in front of goal, with the intent to narrow the margin at 3 quarter time. The Magpies coming home strong winning by ten points 13.13 91 to Bullants 12.10 82.
Glen Eira vs Oakleigh
Is there anyone going to stop this juggernaut of the Gryphons this year? The game was literally buried in the first term as Glen Eira carved up 8 goals to set the foundation for the whole day. Packer Park as the home of the Gryphons, now seems a daunting task for any opposition to play there. Tim Johnston
showed why he is a key pillar in the Gryphons forward line blasting a six goal haul with many other contributors throughout the day, namely, Connor Huthwaite, Will Green, Lachie Pound. Oakleigh had some missed opportunities, sparing eighteen behinds that left them reeling. Aaron Cloke kicked two goals and Tom Gillard provided some excitement for the Krushers but it wasn’t to be as Glen Eira came away with a 49-point win and the four points to take their season to 7-0.
UHS-VU are providing some sort of season that indicates they want to head back to Premier C for 2024. Taking on West Brunswick after they beat Preston last week. The Magpies started the game kicking six goals to quarter time, with UHS needing to come back to win the game. Magpies forward Ben Hutchins kicking 3 of the 6 first-quarter goals.
UHS-VU looked to be in control for the remainder of the day with forwards Brenton Jackson, Sam Adams producing the fireworks in front of goals. With UHS winning the game 16.12 108 to Magpies 12.6 78.

Omelettes scrambled as Beaumaris prove unstoppable
Beaumaris continue their undefeated streak after beating Marcellin OC by four goals on Saturday morning. While Marcellin fought hard until the end, it was not enough to come close to the mighty Sharks. A strong second quarter for the Sheagles would have given the side some hope coming into the second half, but they were only able to add one more major to their final score.
Hayley Carlson stood out for Marcellin, supported by the in-form Alana Pane and Charlotte McGilp.
For Beaumaris, Samantha Baisas and Caley Ryan excelled once again, while Samantha Mclean secured her position at the top of the goal kicking tally by adding another two goals to her season total.
Old Haileybury have returned to the winner’s list after a solid win over Hampton Rovers. Old Haileybury held a narrow lead for the whole day but determined not to let the win slip away from them, they put in an impressive fourth quarter to end the day with a game-high margin of 15 points.
Chelsea Frawley and Taylah Vines-Chapple (2 goals) lead by example for the Hearts, while Maisy Evans (2 goals) was clear best on ground for the Rovers for the second week in a row.
After losing despite having an equal number of scoring shots, Hampton Rovers will need to put serious work into their forward craft this week if they want to have a chance at beating top-of-the-ladder, Beaumaris, next week.
The match-up between Old Xaverians and Old Geelong saw Old Geelong make their case as finals contenders as they kept Old Xaverians to a single major for the day.
Old Geelong set the tone early, keeping Old Xaverians scoreless while kicking two goals themselves. Old Xaverians’ only goal of the day came through the hard work of Katharine Mullins in the second quarter.
Though the game was within reach at the main break, Old Xaverians only managed a further two behinds for the day which was simply not enough.
Tahryn Mant was valiant in defeat for Old Xaverians, while strong performances from Amy Halaby and Camilla Taylor helped get Old Geelong over the line.
A special moment also saw 50-gamer Kathleen Dunn kick a goal in her milestone game.
Finishing 6th in William Buck Premier last year, Old Xaverians have now slumped to 9 th place on the Division 1 ladder and must be wondering where it all went wrong.
Spectators at Rathmines Road Reserve watched on as Old Brighton went on a goal-kicking frenzy, in what eventuated to be an eight goal demolition of Hawthorn AFC
Tiger Doultree and Kitty Smyth put on a show with three goals each, while India Tait continued her outstanding form with a goal of her own and another best on ground performance.
For the Hawks, Bree Gill held her own, kicking one of their two goals in a team-best performance.
Old Camberwell Grammarians have bounced back from their huge loss last week with an impressive victory over Old Melburnians
The VAFA is looking for volunteer reporters to cover Divisions 3 & 4 Women’s for the 2023 season. If you’re interested, please email media@vafa.com.au
All it took was three goals for the winning side, as they kept the Omelettes goalless for the first time this season.
In the low scoring affair, it was ultimately a battle of accuracy, as Old Camberwell kicked three goals straight to Old Melburnians’ five behinds.
Old Melburnians will be hoping for the hasty return of their leading goal kicker, Sophie Fraser, who was of noticeable absence this week, or will need to find other avenues to convert.
Alexandra Herrington and Maggie Wilson led from the front for Old Camberwell, while Jessica Harley and Georgia Dunlop fought hard all day for the Omelettes.

What will your Holmesglen story be?
Everything’s coming up Daisy at Old Paradians
In a masterstroke of recruiting, the Old Paradians were able to secure back-to-back victories after a strong win on the weekend. An orchestrated discussion with Dale Thomas a few weeks ago, resulted in the former Collingwood and Carlton star returning the favour to the club. Putting in his transfer, and ramming home five goals on his return to the VAFA; Daisy produced one of the performances of the weekend. Overall, the Old Paradians’ have turned another gear in the last few weeks putting in a dominant performance over the Whitefriars with a 62-point victory at Garvey Oval.
Even in the face of classic Friars pressure, the Raiders dominated the midfield and contest. Luke Brock ran the leather off his boots and provided much opportunity for forwards with the help of Daniel Comande and Harrison Colomer. Michael Boundy (4 Goals) joined Daisy on the scoresheet and made sure to capitalise on opportunity after opportunity. The Old Paradians have set the tone this week and are demanding not to be counted out.
Even on unfamiliar territory the Brunswick boys pulled off a masterclass against an in-form MHSOB. As per usual, the Unicorns came out of the gate with tenacity and vigour, they put numbers behind the footy which created a bit of confusion for Brunswick, resulting in their slow start. The heavy pressure from Brendan Cook and William Hellier, in addition to Mitchell Wilson and Chris Tetaz produced a game of tough physicality within the stoppages, thus boosting their contest wins; with the Unicorns taking an 11-point lead into the halftime.
But the Brunswick ‘never die’ attitude reminded us once more why they’re flying high atop the Division 2 ladder. Coach Tommy Hunter scoured through the gameplay books for an answer and shifted tactics to focus on a 1:1 contest, a strategy of brilliance. Tom Hedley stepped up
once again putting on his best performance along the wing, accompanied by Will Mckenzie on the other side, the pair set up well and found good use of the footy. The third quarter saw Brunswick soar, booting five goals to take the lead for the first time all game.
Hayden Parker (6 Goals), who possesses the unique ability to know where the big sticks are at all times refused to miss, even snagging one from a tight angle on the siren to silence any doubts and go home with a hard fought nine-point victory. But not often enough is the backline praised for their efforts. Tahj Haddock shut down any and every opportunity Unicorn’s talent tried to create, and in tandem with Jake Ralston had Brunswick backline on lock. Overall Brunswick continue to prove their expertise in all facets of footy, from set-up to adaptability to creative flair, the Brunswick squad continues to surpass all expectations.
The Old Yarra Cobras stormed to Ferndale Park with nothing but a victory in mind. The last fortnight has proven tough for the Cobras due to injuries and a tough loss against an in-form Parkside in Round 6, however, a strong structure and sound game plan enabled a 34-point win over St Mary’s Salesian
James Fleming and Tom Bell put on a show for the fans winning contests in the midfield, which gave opportunity to the Cobras star forwards who collectively put on an absolute masterclass. Jack Hall (5 goals), Mitch Blundell (4 Goals) and David Tokatliyan (4 goals). But the Cobra crown goes to Nick Zappala who put a fantastic display in the backline and refused to allow any opportunities for the Saints. The Cobras are back in-form and are likely to bring the heat to a hungry MHSOB in Round 8.
The South Melbourne Districts have reached a record breaking high with a 127-point win over Bulleen Templestowe at Lindsay Hassett Oval. The Swans had absolutely zero mercy in all four quarters, even kicking 10 goals in a single quarter.
The highest scoring club put on a show with its talent-filled roster; Samuel Mcginn (4 Goals) and Jamie Brooker (4 Goals) were utterly relentless. Thomas Foley (1 Goal) and Jason Clifford (3 Goals) added their own skill and flair. Overall, the Swans continue to cause a riot in Division 2 and are most definitely ones to watch out for as they hold their spot steady in the top four.
For all four quarters the Parkside squad were ruthless. The Devils didn’t pause for a minute in their 63-point win over Aquinas. Daniel McMahon and Lewis Balcombe dominated the corridor and created opportunities through classic Devils run and carry. A forward line of goal magnets, Blake Salmon (6 Goals) and Mitchell Lawson (3 Goals) have shown their accuracy to be tried and true. But it is Benjamin Radford and his 7 goals which sent the fans alight and has shot him to first place in the goal kicking tally (29 Goals) snagging the crown from the previous reigning champion Daniel Wood (28 Goals).
Parkside have proven to be one of the most consistently accurate squads of the division and have only improved with every round. Going 19.9, it is clear the Devils need little opportunity to capitalise which is sure to be a worry for the rest of the competition.

Ivanhoe merciless in win over Therry, while it was Groundhog Day for Albert Park
Round 7 made for an exciting round of footy, with match ups that challenged all teams and provided a clear look into what each side is building on almost mid-way through the season.
Undefeated Williamstown took on second-on-theladder, Albert Park Falcons, at Fearon Reserve. Having fallen short of the win against Williamstown earlier in the season, Albert Park had an opportunity to re-test themselves against the best, while Williamstown had a chance to remind the league of why they are on top.
Williamstown opened the scoring, kicking one major and three minors, and kept Albert Park scoreless heading into quarter time. Lifting their offensive pressure, Albert Park’s Hannah Bur hit the score board and got the ball rolling for the Falcons in the second. While it was looking promising, Williamstown responded quickly, attacking the footy and capitalising on opportunities in front of goal, and went into half time with a ten-point lead.
The Falcons maintained their strong defensive pressure during the second half, keeping Williamstown at bay. Despite their toughest defence, Williamstown was successful in front of goal on multiple occasions and drew out their lead to 30 points by the final siren. Alessia Acquaro kicked two goals for Williamstown, adding to her tally as the competition’s leading goal kicker. Regardless of the Albert Park’s best efforts, it was Groundhog Day for the Falcons, leaving Williamstown sitting comfortably on top of the ladder.
South of the city, the Parkdale Vultures faced off against Old Trinity at Gerry Green Reserve. Focusing on clean handballs out of packs and to players in space, Parkdale were slick with their skills right from the start. Winning the first clearance, the Vultures set the tone for what was to come. Parkdale managed to keep Old Trinity scoreless until the third quarter in a dominant defensive effort. Sienna Symons starred for the Vultures, kicking three majors, and getting best on.
Despite only scoring one behind for the entire game, Old Trinity didn’t allow Parkdale to run away with the game, also putting forward a strong defensive effort. While Parkdale came into this week as favourites, Old Trinity were competitive despite the 39-point loss.
Over at Beaumaris Secondary College, MCC FC faced off against St Mary’s Salesian. Coming off the back of their first win against Therry Penola, St Mary’s was determined to continue building on the success of the week prior. A strong first half effort from both sides highlighted the intensity and quality of footy both teams can produce.
Returning to the field after the main break with a 20-point lead, MCC continued to apply superior offensive and defensive pressure, making St Mary’s attempt at a second victory difficult. While St Mary’s were not adding to the scoreboard at the same rate as MCC, they did not concede points easily.
Anna-Lisa Harris kicked five goals for MCC, while Ellen Pratt kicked two to contribute to MCC’s victory. Despite the strongest effort from St Mary’s, they were unsuccessful in securing their second win. MCC took home the four points, after a conniving 51-point victory.

The match of the round was I vanhoe taking on Therry Penola at Ivanhoe Park. The Ivies put on a clinic, bringing home the biggest win of season thus far. While the 120-point victory was the result of effort from all 25 players, 11 separate goal kickers from Ivanhoe contributed to the colossal win.
Abbey Marcuccio showcased her versatility, initially playing full back but moving into the forward line and kicking three goals, while Georgia Pirdis impressed with her strong marking ability and accuracy in front of goal.
Regardless of Therry Penola only having 14 players take to the field, there was a great display of camaraderie as all players gave their best effort. Unable to impact the play which was heavily controlled by Ivanhoe, there was courage and resilience shown by Therry Penola, working hard as a team until the final siren.

If you want good football, you want Division 3 Men’s
I’m scared to tip winners in this division, I really am. Division 3 Men’s constantly brings with it the unpredictability of who will bring home the chocolates giving me the greatest opportunity to highlight the seven key things we learned from round seven and beyond.
1. The Cobras have the best forward line in the league
I’m not sure what Nathan Walsh is feeding his forward line at Thursday night dinners, but the Cobras inside the forward arc seem to be an unstoppable force in 2023.
Not that they were not in 2022, however their goal kicking momentum continued this week with key highlights being Tommy Lowden kicking his season high bag of 7 majors alongside his teammate Jayden Cutts kicking a division high 10 goals in their major win against Richmond.
During the week, coach Nathan Welsh explained that although the side had an impressive 2022 that saw them contest deep into the finals series, the side managed to retain all-bar-one player from that relatively new side. Thus, suggesting 2023 is a chance for the side to go one further to the big dance with a well-connected team.
However impressive the key forwards have been, the ball sadly doesn’t magically appear in their hands week in week out. The work rate of guys such as Harrison Carter, Michael Wheeler and Jordan Dear are a major reason for the side’s success through the first half of the campaign.
Another great win on the weekend of 122 points makes the Cobras the undeniable favourites in division three, sitting atop the ladder with only one loss and having three players inside the top 6 goal kickers in the comp sets this team from the east up to not just play finals, but dominate.
2.
Swinburne show their hand as a Division 3 quality side
It’s never easy to move up a division no matter how successful you’ve been in the past. It’s just not easy. For Swinburne University, the beginning of their season has been a mixture of being in games until the final moments or being blown out from the start and having to make it to that sweet release of the final siren… not this time.
Now keep in mind that round 7 is a direct replay from the opening round of the season, which is where Power House came up big winners by 82 points against Swinburne. To set the scene even more, Swinburne was staring down the barrel of a big loss to the Animals last week compared to Power House’s 10 point triumph over the Snakes, so every man and his dog would have understood a sluggish mentality from the Swinburne outfi t.
But the great thing about football is statistics are just on a piece of paper, and Swinburne rolled up their sleeves and walked onto St James Park with one goal and one only: see ball get ball.
Power House was caught out early by quick movement and unrelenting pressure on a Saturday afternoon, never being able to take the lead away from Nathaniel Symes side who marched their way into their first win of the year and more importantly, off the bottom of the division three ladder.
The win is massive not just for the confidence of the players but also the context of the season, now sitting just one win behind Richmond to get themselves out of the relegation zone and also to push their case for a few other wins given Power House sits just outside finals contention themselves.
3. The Animals own Elsternwick in 2023
The Wattle Park Animals for me are the greatest wild card in the competition. When they are at their best, they rival the likes of Canterbury and Hawthorn but at times can be caught sleeping in the second half of games.
Round 7 presented the club with the opportunity to truly put the league on notice given their massive win over Elsternwick to kick off the season at home was the headline of that opening round, it was important to see how both sides would fare.
Elsternwick has shown glimpses of brilliance this season, but when it comes to the Animals their fluent ball movement and run and carry seems to get mitigated by the inside pressure and willingness to go through the corridor when required by the Animals.
As a result, the Animals proved that round 1 was no fluke and no anomaly of not just beating top sides but being able to run away with games, kicking their way to a 27 point win to cement themselves in the top four at the half way marker.
Last year Elsternwick played finals and although it didn’t go the way Peter Higgenboth and his men had hoped, they were a genuine threat and will continue to be if they can work out a way to bring out their best week in week out. For Wattle Park, they were the hard luck side of 2022 just missing finals after some solid football, but this year there will be no stone unturned as they march their way to September.
4. Division 3 is Poetic Chaos
I’ve made a point a few times this season that there are levels to Division 3 in terms of the quality of teams and players on a weekly basis.
Is it harsh? Maybe. However, I certainly know when I’m wrong and this week proved to me that on any given day and any given week, the bottom sides in this league can strike the fear of life into their rivals.
Swinburne Uni this week stepped up to say okay look, we know we got beaten in a big way in round 6 but we’ve had 6 nights of good sleep and big dreams to come and knock of arguably a finals side in Power House.
Further to that, each and every week a side that takes on Richmond, and I am aware that this week wasn’t their best, but you can’t ever pencil it in as an automatic four points.
They nearly managed to hold out Power House last week, and have been in the game week in week out against some big competition. Heading into round 8 against the Animals, you can make an argument for Zac Jardines men, much the same as Rick Nolans La Trobe side.
Coming up from Division 4 alongside Swinburne, the side has taken some heavy losses to begin their Division 3 campaign however the likes of Matty Ogle in front of goals and Iryoung Fan through the middle offers ambition the team can regroup in the second half and steal some wins along the way.
5. Hawthorn may be the most rounded team in Division 3
Now, I’ve always been big on Hawthorn.
The team is quite possibly the most well rounded in the competition in terms of talent at every pocket of the oval, and this season it seems to be falling into place nicely for coach Mark Murray.
Last year the Hawks had three players inside the league’s best team, and this season they only seem to be elevating their game play and smarts around the side.
ROUND 8 TIPS La Trobe Universityv Elsternwick
Power House v Canterbury
Swinburne University v Hawthorn
Wattle Parkv Richmond Central
Charlie Boots off the backline plays the quarterback role for this side like he is Tom Brady reincarnated in the eastern suburbs, slow but deadly. In the forward half, Justin Raiti and Will Meehan continue to deviate sides when given the chance.
Their midfield run and carry is second to none and if given an inch they are taking a mile. They sit second on the ladder for a reason and this side will be sitting and relishing the opportunity to take another crack at the Cobras in two rounds time.
6. Who is leading the P Hutchinson through 7 rounds?
In 2022, the Best & Fairest Medal belonged to Jack Hamilton of Parkside, and right behind him were two of the division’s best in Nick Szabo of the Cobras and Harry Davis from the Animals.
Given Hamilton no longer is in the division, the race for the medal was cracked wide open, and an assumed injury or some time away at the moment for Szabo means Harry Davis on paper was one to watch this season, and boy what a spectacle the midfielder has been.
He’s missed a few games this season but of those he’s played he’s been recognised as best on ground twice and only missed the votes once. He is the leader, engine room and soul of the Animals and is doing all he can to help this side get to the finals and push for a flag whilst maybe collecting league honours all at the same time.
In the division at the moment, there are only three players to have polled six times in the season, two of which having only played six games.
Hawthorn’s Luke McLeod and Power House’s Harry Officer have been standouts for their respective clubs in 2023. McLeod is one of the pieces of the well-rounded Hawks that keeps the ball moving the way it does, while for Power House, Officer has been a breakout for the side in 2023.
The last of the three who have polled votes is Elsternwick’s Dylan Jones, who last season finished equal fi fth in the medal count just 7 votes behind eventual winner Jack Hamilton. Jones has been damaging all season long and given last year the man who featured the most in the clubs best took out the medal could mean Jones is trending to go even better in 2023.
7. The crystal ball is telling me…
If I cast my eyes ahead for the remainder of the season, there’s one consistent key to the division three program.
Every week any team can win, and that’s just about the most exciting thing in football. Swinburne’s huge breakthrough in round 7 proves enough that this division is brimming with football talent and at any given moment, it can be awoken like a sleeping giant and put to great use.
At the top going to the big dance, for me it’s the Cobras and either the Hawks or Animals to do battle for Division 3 supremacy. That’s not to say the likes of Power House and Elsternwick can’t be there to have their shot at the title, but those two sides to me are the scariest to come up against each and every week.
Next week brings with it a great fresh challenge for most sides with the match of the round being Power House taking on Canterbury with a redemption arc as big as any this season for Power House against the competition leaders.

The Bulls outshine Masala in stunning victory, while St Johns survives a shark scare
The first match of the round saw the season’s two top sides battle it out in what was tipped by many to be the match of the round. Both North Brunswick and Masala started off relatively strong and confident, but it was the Bulls with the home-ground advantage that led at quarter time by 2 goals. The second quarter saw the Bulls begin to quickly extend their lead over the Tigers as they had an outstanding 6 goal to 1 quarter to take a 50-point lead into half-time.
After the break the Tigers began to enact their spicy brand of football with 3 goals, however, the Bulls were able to match it with their own physical game with 3 goals of their own to maintain a 51-point lead with a quarter to play. The Bulls were then able to completely run away with the win in dominant fashion pouring on 9 goals in the final quarter to win in extremely convincing fashion by 90 points.
Multiple goalkickers for the Bulls included Andrew Ramzy (5), Nicholas Watson (4)Adam Tsardakis (3), Jareth Ombiga (2) and Simon Woodward (2). Brandon Kelly kicked 4 goals for the Tigers with Zac Pahos contributing with 2 goals and teammates Sean Downes, Henry Kuner, Conor Galvin and Luke Broomhall all kicking a goal each. Amongst the best for the Bulls were Nicholas Watson, Luke Russell and Spencer Zahra. Amongst the best for the Tigers were Jordan Gibbon, Brandon Kelly and Conor Galvin. The Bulls will look to continue their winning ways as they face off against Eley Park. Masala will look to rebound as they face Albert Park, a side they met earlier in the year in a competitive matchup.
The second match of the round saw Box Hill North take on Albert Park. The first quarter saw both teams try to figure out their opponents’ gameplan. As the siren sounded to end the first quarter, the Demons held a 10-point lead over the Falcons. In the second quarter, both teams put their foot on the accelerator and were able to hit the scoreboard, with the Demons kicking 4 and the Falcons kicking 3. This slight edge saw the Demons take a 16-point lead into the major break.
The third quarter saw the Demons really utilise the advantage of their fast and athletic play as they were able to add another 3 goals (albeit from 10 scoring shots), whilst keeping the Falcons goalless to take a 38-point lead into the final quarter. The Demons then finished off the Falcons with a 4-goal to 2 final quarter to leave with a very convincing 52-point win, putting them right on the heels of Masala and the desired double chance.
Multiple goal kickers for the Demons included Michael Trkulja (4), Blake Williams (2) and Jake Dullard (2). Joshua Beets was the only multiple-goal scorer for the Falcons with 4 majors. Sam Lee and Felix Metz also hit the scoreboard for the Falcons with 1 goal each. Among the best for the Falcons were Michael Trkulja, Corey Bull and Thomas Rickard. Among the best for the Falcons were Alexander Evans, Felix Metz and Henry Olive. Box Hill North will look to improve on their record as they face a tough matchup in St Johns. Albert Park will look to rebound as they play host to Masala in only their second home game of the season to date.
The final match of Round 7 saw St Johns and Eley Park fight to the very end where both teams sought a much-needed win. St Johns got off to a quick start against the Sharks with a 5-goal to 2 first quarter which saw them take an 18-point lead into quarter
time. The second quarter saw the Sharks begin to swarm as they were able to add 2 goals onto their tally whilst keeping the JOCS to a single goal, reducing the St Johns lead to just 9 points.
The third quarter was the most defensive one in the game as both teams battled it out trying to gain any advantage they could. It was the JOCS that were able to gain a slight advantage kicking 2 goals to 1 to hold a small 13-point lead with a final quarter of football to play. In the final quarter, the Sharks stepped right onto the accelerator adding 3 goals to their tally, however, the JOCS was just able to hold on with 2 goals of their own, escaping a scare with a 7-point win.
Tom Johnston was the only multiple goal-scorer for the Sharks with 4 goals with other goal-kickers including Marc Rosato, Kane Scanlon, Drew Crawford and Andrew Yeo. Multiple goal scorers for the JOCS were Nicholas Terrill (2), Kailum Newland (2) and Matthew De Poilly (2). The best for the Sharks were Will Male, Zachary Hayes and Jacob Rose. The best for the JOCS were Terry Van Horick, Baiden Harris and Jayke Tuplin. The Sharks will look to bring that same pressure again as they face the divisions toughest in North Brunswick. St Johns will now host Box Hill North in what should be a good test against a fast opposition.

MILESTONES
Alice McKinnon (South Melbourne Districts)
Current co-captain Alice McKinnon joined the Bloods mid-season in 2018, which was a tough one with the group not winning a game, but Alice quickly formed strong bonds and came back raring to go for the next year, where the group had a season to remember. Al cemented her spot across half-forward; quickly establishing herself as a steady and encouraging voice and fierce competitor which she continues to be to this day. It won’t be a surprise to anyone to see past-players and supporters coming back in droves to the club to celebrate Alice’s 50th game as a Blood. Her ability to form meaningful relationships while leading by example on the field has left a mark on many. 50
Kasey Jaeger (South Melbourne Districts)
Kasey ‘Hollywood’ Jaeger began her career in 2018 by signing up for the ‘Come and Try’ sessions. Her Pa playing for Richmond in 1957, so Kasey now wears her Pa’s number 27 to honour him and continue her family’s footy legacy. On the field, Kasey has demonstrated her elite fitness and versatility as a player, rucking in the midfield, playing in the forward line in various roles, and serving as the last line of defence in the backline. She brings experience, skill, and strategy to the team, providing support for team members both seasoned and emerging. Kasey has also served as a key contact in the recruitment side of the club, actively encouraging those who reach out to come down and give it a go. Her commitment to the team and the club is exemplary, and this is shown in many areas of club life.
Libby Petty (South Melbourne Districts)
Libby joined SMDFC during our first women’s academy at the end of 2017, and soon put her hand up to help in a number of roles (making her a VERY popular new recruit with the club). Despite setbacks with injuries, illness and an overwhelming number of commitments, Libby has always made time for footy, the club and its members. She has advocated for every one of us, and spearheaded fundraising efforts such as our inaugural Pride Round. Libby is the person you always want in your corner. She has put people flat on their backs with the strength of her hips, and who could forget Libby’s on field squeal of delight the first time she kicked on the run.
Athan Stamatelatos (South Melbourne Districts)

Tom Golz (MHSOBFC)
Congratulations to Tom Golz, who brings up game number 50 with MHSOBFC this weekend. Joining the Unicorns’ Development Squad in 2018, Tom made his mark as a smooth-moving defender, culminating in him winning both the B&F and Daniel Eimutis Players’ Player Award in 2019. After suffering a badly broken leg at training in 2021, Tom not only returned to football, but went on to make his senior debut in 2022. Off the field, Tom is a valuable contributor to our club, helping to organise a number of social events and putting other people’s enjoyment ahead of his own. Well done on 50 hard-earned games Tom!
Athan, affectionately known around the club as “Mini” is a stalwart of the South Melbourne Districts. Whilst it is a mystery why his nickname is “Mini,” what is not a mystery is Athan’s ferocity at the contest, his rapid leg-speed, and the blood, sweat and tears he gives for this footy club. Mini has developed into a strong, reliable, line-breaking defender who can be seen on Saturdays, quite literally running through an opposition forward, emerging with the football and launching a long ball to the wing, kick-starting another successful bloods attack. One thing he doesn’t do, is discriminate, equally as happy to run through opposition midfielders and win centre clearances. Often being used as a “break in-case of emergency” when the bloods need to ignite a spark in the midfield late in a game. 50
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Jack Brown (Old Scotch)
Congratulations to Jack Brown on reaching 50 games for Old Scotch Football Club. Jack joined the club from Scotch College in 2019, playing a big part in the under 19 premiership team that year. Jack progressed to the Men’s 2nd XVIII post COVID in 2021 and then up to the 1st XVIII in 2022, now a regular and consistent performer at Premier A section level. We wish Jack all the best on reaching this milestone. 150
Alex Ross (Glen Eira Gryphons)
The Glen Eira Gryphons congratulate Alex Ross on achieving the 150-game milestone. A member of the 2016 and 2018 Division 3 Senior Premiership teams, Rossy has improved as the years tick by culminating in a 2nd place finish in the 2022 Senior Best & Fairest. Blessed with a set shot goal kicking routine that looks like poetry in motion, the fast leading and highly skilled forward us a very popular figure around our club. We look forward to Rossy strutting his stuff at Packer Park for a few years yet. 200

Michael Henderson (Kew FC)
In round 8, Michael Henderson will play game number 200 for his beloved Kew Football Club. “Hendo” joined the Bear Cave in 2010 and was an instant success, winning the Ken Rogers Memorial Trophy for Best First Year Player. In years to follow, Michael has served on the club’s committee as well as serving as both senior vice caption and senior captain. Making history for his footy club, Hendo played a critical role in all three of the club’s consecutive senior premierships in 2013, 2014 and 2015. While either holding down a key opposition forward or running through the midfield, he seldom loses a contest and is looked up to by all his teammates. Off the field, Kew FC has Michael to thank for harbouring the best of its club values, making every single player feel truly welcome at the Bear Cave, knowing they have a mate in the favourite son, Michael Henderson. Congratulations Hendo on this incredible milestone!
Ben Rose (Glen Eira Gryphons)
Ben has been an enormous contributor to our club for over two decades. Affectionately known as ‘Jenny’, Ben was a member or the Monash Gryphons 2010 Division 4 Reserves Premiership team, the Monash Gryphons 2011 Division 3 Grand Final team, the Glen Eira Saints 2016 Division 3 Senior Premiership team and was a member of the Glen Eira Gryphons 2018 Division 3 Reserves Grand Final team in the year he was the Reserves Best & Fairest winner. What Ben lacks in pace he makes up for in guile, cunning and pure hard work with his battered old Kia truck often one of the first to pull up at training. Reaching 250 games is an amazing achievement. Congratulations Jenny, from all of us at the Glen Eira Gryphons!

De La Salle begin to build, and Old Brighton upset Old Xaverians
The U19 Premier section is heating up as we approach the halfway point of the 2023 VAFA season. Some upsets and tight contests in Round 7 have only left us wanting more!
Old Brighton def. Old Xaverians by 14 points.
In a remarkable turn of events, Old Brighton managed to keep their season alive with a memorable come-from-behind victory against the reigning premiers. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, but Old Brighton displayed exceptional composure under pressure. It was in the second half that they found their footing and took control of the contest, ultimately securing a well-deserved win.
The standout performances of A. Corke, T. Marriott, M. Hofmann, J. Campigli, C. Schwerdt, and T. Howden cannot be overstated. Their skill and poise on the field was nothing short of outstanding. Each player showcased their individual ability, contributing significantly to Old Brighton’s successful outing. Their collective efforts and leadership were instrumental in guiding the team to their third win of the season, providing a much-needed boost to their campaign.
Meanwhile, Xavier, despite suffering a narrow defeat, will now have to regroup and reset. This powerhouse might be showing subtle signs of premiership fatigue, indicating the challenges of maintaining a high level of performance. Nonetheless, N. Honeyman, F. Visentini, M. Mahommed, and L. Moore fought courageously to drag Xavier over the line, leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of victory. Looking ahead, Old Brighton will embark on a journey to face the CYs in Williamstown, hoping to continue their winning momentum. Xavier, on the other hand, has an exciting clash against Uni Blues in Round 8, presenting an opportunity for them to bounce back and reclaim their spark of success.
Caulfield Grammarians def. University Blues by 6 points.
In yet another nail-biting contest, Caulfield emerged victorious with an important win over University Blues in a tightly contested match at home. Despite the Blues’ relentless efforts to counter and regain control, Caulfield managed to maintain their composure and hold on to their lead.
Caulfield’s efficiency in front of goal played a pivotal role in their triumph. Their ability to convert scoring opportunities proved decisive, with T. Warner, L. Trumble, and J. Freedman receiving well-deserved praise for their goal-scoring abilities. Together, they combined to contribute an impressive total of seven majors, showcasing their impact on the contest.
Uni Blues, although still sitting within the top four, recognizes the significance of securing these crucial wins to position themselves for success come September. Their start to the season has been commendable, displaying consistent performances and solidifying their status as a competitive force. L. Boyle was recognized as the best player on the field, demonstrating his skill and influence by contributing three goals to his team’s tally.
Looking ahead, Caulfield faces another formidable challenge as they prepare to take on the in-form De La Salle in their upcoming match. It will be a test of resilience and their ability to maintain winning momentum. Meanwhile, University Blues is set for a head-to-head clash with Old Xavierians; a match that presents an opportunity for them to showcase their determination and ambition against a strong opponent.
St Kevins def. Old Scotch by 31 points.
St Kevins continue their rampage in the U19 Premier division, showcasing their unwavering strength as they comfortably put away the formidable Old Scotch. The match was a testament to St Kevins’ exceptional talent and cohesive gameplan, as they continued their riot through the competition.
X. Duke, W. Pfeiffer, C. Chaffey, S. Jones, B. Bryan, and A. Butler stood out, displaying a level of skill and prowess that set them apart from the rest. Their performances were truly exceptional, highlighting the depth of talent within the St Kevins squad. With each passing match, St Kevins continues to impress, leaving no doubt about their status as one of the top teams in the competition.
On the other hand, Old Scotch endured a slow start in the match and struggled to regain their balance. Their inconsistency has been a recurring issue throughout the season, preventing them from stringing together strong performances. As a result, they find themselves second to last on the ladder, with their season gradually slipping away.
In an effort to revive their campaign, Old Scotch will face St Bernards, who currently occupy the bottom spot on the ladder. This match presents an opportunity for Old Scotch to re-establish their form and regain some much-needed momentum. Meanwhile, St Kevins will go head-to-head with SBMT, another significant challenge for the formidable team.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers def by. De La Salle by 3 points.
In a thrilling and tightly contested match at Brindisi St, De La Salle showcased their resurgent form at the expense of SBMT. The contest between the two teams proved to be the match of the round, with both sides fighting tooth and nail for the victory. Despite falling short by a mere 3 points, SBMT’s standout player J. Ryder continued to lead by example and build an impressive individual season. Ryder’s consistent performances have been a bright spot for the young Tigers, who have emerged as one of the surprise packages of the season thus far. Despite injuries and unavailability of key players, SBMT has shown resilience and determination, consistently stepping up and giving their all on the field.
On the other hand, De La Salle seems to have found their rhythm and is beginning to hit their stride. Recent performances from the team have been marked by a level of excellence, suggesting that something has clicked within their ranks. S. Filiopovic has been in terrific form, delivering impactful performances and making significant contributions on the scoreboard. Filiopovic’s standout efforts were acknowledged as he was named the best player on the field. Looking ahead, De La Salle will face a challenging test in their upcoming Round 8 clash against Caulfield. As the season progresses, both De La Salle and SBMT will aim to build upon their recent performances and capitalize on the positive momentum. De La Salle eager to extend their winning streak, and SBMT determined to showcase their fighting spirit once again.
Williamstown CYMS def. St Bernards by 123 points.
In a straightforward and dominant performance, Williamstown comfortably secured victory over St Bernard’s last Saturday, ticking the box and adding a valuable percentage boost to their season’s tally. The comprehensive win is expected to strengthen their position in the race for finals this year.
Z. Provest emerged as the standout player, delivering a sensational performance that earned him the clear best-on-ground honours. Provest’s impact was felt throughout the game as he, together with A. Williams, contributed a remarkable 15 goals collectively. Their combined efforts in front of goal showcased their skill and effectiveness, playing a vital role in Williamstown’s triumph.
Unfortunately for St Bernard’s, they found themselves outclassed in every aspect of the game. The team struggled to match the intensity and prowess of their opponents, ultimately succumbing to a defeat. With this result, St Bernard’s remain rooted to the bottom of the U19 Premier section, facing significant challenges as they strive to climb the ladder.
Looking ahead, St Bernard’s will confront Old Scotch in their upcoming Round 8 clash. It will be an opportunity for them to regroup, reassess their strategies, and put forth a strong performance to regain confidence and momentum. On the other hand, Williamstown’s next challenge will come in the form of a match against Old Brighton, where they will aim to build on their recent success and further solidify their position in the finals race.
