VAFA delivers on Player Health Services
It is with great pride that we announced the launch of our VAFA Player Assistance Program this week.
The Player Assistance Program will provide all current registered VAFA players with access to up to three FREE counselling services with a qualified practitioner through our program partner, Converge International, as well as access to industry leading health and wellbeing resources and tools.
VAFA players will be able to connect confidentially with a team of specialists at anytime (24/7) and through their choice of delivery (face to face, telephone, video or live chat).
VAFA General Manager
Community & Club Support, Sean Walker, has been instrumental in researching the most appropriate health care services that can accommodate our 12,500+ registered players who are spread across metropolitan Melbourne.
The cost of this program is being met by part of the funds raised through the $11 VAFA player registration fee.
Jason ReddickCEO• A reduction in excess per claim from $100 to $50.
• An increase in reimbursement from a maximum of $2,000 to $3,500 per claim.
• An increase in capital benefit from $100,000 maximum to $200,000 maximum (provides cover in the event of death or TPD).
This investment certainly delivers cost savings to all players who were previously on the basic level of injury cover. For those few Clubs that had previously invested in gold level injury cover for their players, this investment has resulted in direct cost savings to those clubs.
VAFA players will be able to connect confidentially with a team of specialists at anytime
We announced in January that the remainder of the player registration fee funds are being utilised to purchase an increase from Bronze to Gold level player injury insurance which delivered each player with:
• An increase in reimbursement from 50% to 90% of items that are not claimable through Medicare.
By providing all VAFA players with free access to mental health services and increased injury insurance at no additional cost to them, we trust that not only are we benefitting all our current VAFA players, but it breaks down some financial barriers and makes our Clubs a more attractive proposition to possible new recruits.
The VAFA’s Strategic Plan, initiative 3.3 under the Community pillar, states the focus to “Invest in the provision of welfare support and training programs”.
In delivering the Player Assistance Program and Gold level injury insurance cover, we are confident that we are delivering on this strategic goal for the benefit of all our VAFA players.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
Uni Blues jump into William Buck Premier Men’s Top 4
Three wins from their last four starts have seen last year’s Preliminary Finalists jump into the Top 4 for the first time this season.
The University Blues 2024 rollercoaster ride continued with a stunning second-half turnaround against Old Melburnians at Elsternwick Park. The Blues led by 15 points at quarter time before OMs took control in the second term, booting 6 unanswered goals to open up a handy 30-point lead at the major break. No-one could have predicted what was next.
The visitors unleashed a scintillating half of football, slamming on 12 goals to 1 to rocket away to an impressive 52-point victory that delivered a healthy percentage boost and a place in the Top 4.
Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “I was happy with the way we responded in the second half after a disappointing second quarter. “We made some minor tweaks with set ups and personnel around the ball and really got on top in that area. “Eddy Ziebarth was amazing (4 goals and the SKINS Player of the Game). Nick Conway & Tom Cutler were great down back - Nick so solid and Tom initiating our offence.”
Paul SATTERLEY (OM): “We had arguably our best half of footy for the season before we went totally missing in the second half. “Blues smacked us in the clearances whilst Ziebarth really got them going in the third. Full credit goes to them and how they turned it around.”
Reigning premiers Collegians continued their winning ways after getting the jump on Fitzroy at Brunswick St Oval.
The Lions were on song early, kicking the first 6.2 of the game before the Roys finally hit the scoresheet at the 25-minute mark. The second term was goal-for-goal as the Lions edged out to a 28-point half-time advantage in idyllic autumn conditions.
The Roys booted 2 of the first 3 goals in the third term to remain within striking distance until Collegians cranked into top gear with 3 goals in 7 minutes and while Fitzroy responded, the visitors held a comfortable 31-point three-quarter time lead and were never headed.
Five straight wins for the Lions, who once again topped the 400-disposal mark as their uncontested possession game claimed another victim.
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “After having some slow starts over the last month, we were able to sharpen up with a hot start that set us up well. Fitzroy kept coming at us and, at times, got on top with strong contested footy. Alex Lukic was very dangerous up forward with 3 goals & also impacted in the ruck.”
Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “We gave Collegians a 20-minute head start which you can’t afford to give a good side. We matched it with them after that and there were some good learnings against a team that was well drilled and clean. Jack McKay was outstanding with 6 goals and Don Toohey (33 disposals, 7 tackles, 10 clearances) was busy in the midfield with some classy ball use.”
St Kevin’s came from behind at three-quarter time to steal a thrilling 2-point win over Old Scotch at Camberwell Sportsground. SKOB kicked the first 4 goals before the Cardinals responded strongly in time on, booting 4 in 6 minutes to head to the first break just 2 points down. The hosts repeated the dose in the second term, kicking 3 late goals in 9 minutes to nudge 10 points clear at the half.
The third term was a quarter of missed opportunities as the pressure built. Old Scotch kicked the only 2 goals in the first 28 minutes (2.3 to SKOB’s 0.4) before a late goal to Harry Wardlaw brought the visitors back within 15 points.
The Cardinals struck first in the last to get back out to 21 points clear before St Kevin’s dug deep and kicked the next 3 goals to hit the lead at the 21-minute mark.
Old Scotch kicked 3 consecutive behinds to edge back in front, but those misses would prove costly when best afield Sam Tucker kicked his third goal at the 28-minute mark. It was the match-winner for SKOB, delivering their fifth victory of the season after their third consecutive thriller.
Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “Another cracking contest for neutral supporters but a tough one for the coaches given the close margin! I’m most proud that our boys never gave up and even when we got to 21 points down halfway through the last quarter, they kept trying to win and when the momentum came our way, we were able to convert. It could be a season-defining win given the quality of the opposition.”
Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “We focused all week on bringing a strong team brand and the boys delivered. Our preparedness to work together and pressure the opposition into turnover was very pleasing and created opportunities back our way.
Meanwhile, another thriller unfolded at the Snake Pit as St Bernards gave undefeated league-leaders Old Brighton a monumental scare.
It was all Snowdogs early as they created the first 7 scores of the game but didn’t fully capitalise to put 3.4 on the board before Old Brighton responded with 2.4 of their own to close within a kick at the first change.
Inaccuracy continued to plague the visitors in the third term – the 6 consecutive behinds to finish the second quarter were followed by another 5 minor scores to start the third as their inability to finish their work kept the Snowdogs in it.
It was OB by just 8 points at the last change, and when Ben Overman slotted the opening goal of the last for St Bernards, the locals sniffed an upset. The final quarter was an absolute nailbiter – just as the visitors booted clear, the hosts hit back within a kick. In the end, the league-leaders remained undefeated. Just.
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “We ended up falling in - relieved more than anything to have got the win as it wasn’t a polished performance. St Bernard’s pushed us right to the finish and with poor finishing at goal could have been a different result. Elliott Avis held us together down back, Harry Hill again through the middle and Sam Collins presented strongly up forward.”
Steve Alessio (St Bernards): “I was really proud of the way our boys implemented the plans we discussed throughout the week. Old Brighton’s ball movement was very slick. We got to see the benchmark of the competition up close today and will learn a lot from that contest.
The final match of the round saw Old Xaverians rack up their second win in successive weeks at Melbourne Uni Oval as they comfortably accounted for University Blacks.
Unlike last week, Xavs found their range early and had 4.3 on the board before Blacks had scored and headed to the first change with a commanding 38-point lead.
Credit to Blacks who lifted in the third term and evened the game up in general play – both teams booting 3 goals for the quarter, before the hosts added a further 2 goals to 1 in the last. But it was Old Xavs cruising to a comfortable 56-point win that will make the competition sit up and take notice as they settle into their system and style under their new coach.
Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Really pleased to walk away with 8 points in 6 days at Uni. It’s never an easy place to travel to. A great first half inside and outside. Our backs were fantastic, we really strangled them. The second half was much more of a tight slog.”
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “OX played a far superior brand of football in the first half. We were more competitive in the second half. We will look to bounce back next week.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
Lauren AtkinsonTie-riffic contest as MUWFC and Caulfield thriller ends in a stalemate
Round 7 in the William Buck Premier Women’s competition was full of excitement as the first tie of the season befell Melbourne University Women’s and Caulfield. Old Scotch and St Kevin’s continued their undefeated streaks and Coburg returned to the winners’ list with their second win of the season.
The Round kicked off at Victoria Park where Kew overcame West Brunswick by 22 points.
West Brunswick got off to a hot start, managing two goals to Kew’s one in the first term, however Kew returned from the quarter-time break with zeal, kicking four goals to take a 14-point lead into the main break.
Things tightened up in the second half, but Kew were still able to maintain control of the game, not permitting West Brunswick to reduce the deficit.
Lily Barr and Sophie Stewart proved to be the main forward targets for their respective sides, finishing with 3 goals apiece and both appearing in their team’s best players.
Other notable performances included those of foundational Kew Bear, Michaela Harding, who impressed in her 100 th game, and Bronte Carlin, who stood out for West Brunswick.
Collegians posed no serious threat to Old Scotch, who got the job done by 47 points at Camberwell Sportsground.
Collegians did produce the first goal of the day off the boot of Georgia Harris; however, it would turn out to be their only major for the game. Two late first-quarter goals to Old Scotch dampened the spirits of Collegians and provided Old Scotch with the momentum going into the second term.
By half time, Old Scotch led by 26 points, and it was not looking promising for Collegians. To their credit, they increased their pressure in the third, leading to a scrappy contest in which neither side was able to convert.
In the final term, Old Scotch added another three goals to their tally to extend their undefeated 2024 record with another big win.
Despite how the scoreboard reads, Collegians did well to assuage Old Scotch’s attacks for large chunks of play, however, they appeared to fade away at the end of each term, with 7 of Old Scotch’s 8 goals occurring in the last five minutes of quarters.
Maxine Wells was superb in defence for Old Scotch, while Millie Fraser-Smith (2 goals) and Mia Cowan (3 goals) were presences up forward.
St Kevin’s remain unbeaten in their premiership defence after securing another four points against Old Yarra Cobras in a 34-point victory.
Holly Kenealy had a sensational first quarter, contributing three goals for St Kevin’s, to earn the Saints a 12-point lead at the first break.
St Kevin’s proved too quick and too clean for the Cobras in the second, and had they been more effective with their scoring opportunities, they could have done even more damage. As it was, they extended their lead to 21 points by half time.
There was a serious injury in the third, leading to play being called off. As this occurred after the main break, St Kevin’s were still rewarded with the win.
Monash Blues woeful season continued with another disappointing loss, this time at the hands of Coburg
Monash kept within reach of Coburg in the first half, trailing by 15 points at the main break, however, Coburg put the foot on the pedal in the second half, outscoring Monash by 39 points to win by a final margin of 54.
Georgia Hampson (4 goals) and Sarah Jolly (3 goals) played the lead roles for Coburg, while Chloe Gibson (1 goal) and Eliza Grills battled valiantly for Monash.
On Sunday, we saw the first draw of the 2024 season in the Premier Women’s competition, as nothing could split Melbourne University Women’s and Caulfield Grammarians
The first term was a marker of what was to come, with each team having periods of authority, resulting in a one-point difference at the first break.
The rest of the match proved to be a battle between accuracy and persistence, with Melbourne Uni Women’s making the most of their opportunities, while on the other hand, Caulfield won a lot of the territory battle but struggled to hit the scoreboard in a meaningful way.
Trailing by 8 points going into the final term, Caulfield had repeated inside 50 entries until captain Serena Kuo took matters into her own hands and kicked a beautiful snap goal to level things.
Melbourne University reclaimed the lead after Asha Price kicked her third goal of the day at the 16-minute mark, however, Caulfield refused to bow down.
The final score of the day came from Serena Kuo, who kicked a textbook ‘Captain’s Goal’ to cause a stalemate at Melbourne University Oval.
Aisling Tupper was instrumental for Melbourne University, showcasing her pace and skill, while Victoria Holt embodied the ‘goalkeeper’ role, denying Caulfield of goals time and time again.
For Caulfield, Isla Mottram and Zoe McCurdy were two of the best afield, while Serena Kuo also deserves recognition for her mammoth fourth quarter.
Heading into Round 8, Old Scotch and St Kevin’s head up the ladder, with Kew and Collegians rounding out the top four.
Caulfield Grammarians will face a huge challenge when they host Old Scotch at Glen Huntly Park, with Old Scotch yet to drop a game this season.
Collegians will look to boost their percentage when they come up against bottom-placed Monash Blues, who are still searching for their first win.
Boosted by a massive Round 7 win against Monash, Coburg will take on a much tougher side in St Kevin’s.
Finally, Old Yarra Cobras will host West Brunswick in what promises to be one of the matches of the round.

PREMIER B MEN’S
Paddy GrindlayFour points between first and seventh in Premier B
Despite their ninth position on the ladder, Williamstown CYMS pushed Old Ivanhoe all the way to the final siren at Fearon Reserve, proving they’re certainly no pushover in Premier B.
The Hoers started brightly, booting three goals in five-and-a-half minutes into the wind at Fearon Reserve through Toby McLean, Nick Graham and Luke Scuderi.
That stung the home squad into action though, as Archi Manton nabbed three of his seven goals in the remainder of the first quarter to secure the CYs a quarter-time lead, before adding another two on the other side of the break to extend his squad’s advantage.
From that point on it was Old Ivanhoe on top to round out the half, contributing 13 of the game’s next 14 scoring shots with the wind at its back to take a 20-point lead into the long break - but losing Toby McLean in the process.
Williamstown booted four goals to one in the third term, wiping away the visitors’ lead and setting up an exciting finish as the sun set.
Goals to Matt Hooy and Billy Murphy had Old Ivanhoe fifteen points clear into time-on in the final term, before William Bokma and Archi Manton responded to give the CYs a chance late.
In the dying minutes, Oskar Manton left a running shot from the stoppage wide that would’ve given the home squad a late lead, Old Ivanhoe holding on to win 12.16 (88) to 13.7 (85).
“We saw how well (CYs) played against Beaumaris - we were really mindful,” Hoers coach Jarrod Gieschen said.
Harrison Reid played a run-with role on Liam Conway with aplomb, Jack Harper proved to be a valuable addition to the Hoers’ defensive unit and Nick Graham booted two goals from his half-back flank.
With no Nick Riddle or Sam Keogh behind the ball, Reed Jepson had his hands full with Archi Manton - but the Hoers’ grit and determination earned their coach’s praise. “It’s the character that they’ve shown for a period of time now,” Gieschen said.
While CYs coach Con Terzoglou was “absolutely proud” of his squad’s ability to haul in two separate three-goal deficits before half time, he’d like to do without the comebacks in future. “It does constantly leave you with low margins for error,” he said.
Old Trinity snapped its three-game losing skid at Glen Huntly Park, able to jump Caulfield Grammarians at the start and hold off a late charge to win by 24 points.
After a tight opening ten minutes of the game, Donald McDonald’s squad kicked four goals in nine minutes to take charge, dominating the clinches and providing the likes of Dom Payman plenty of early opportunities up forward.
It took Caulfield until the final quarter to make a significant dent in the 25-point quarter time deficit, able to reduce Old Trinity’s advantage to 11 points with ten minutes remaining in the game, but the visitors held fast to run out 15.7 (97) to 10.13 (73) victors.
Ruck Oliver Ruddock and midfielder Jono Moren were two key absentees for Guy McKenna’s squad, forcing forward Jasper Rouget into the stoppages to play one-out in the ruck.
“The competition’s so tight - we can’t give any team at any level a head start,” McKenna said. “It was probably a lack of supply in the end - in the first quarter, we couldn’t get it down there.”
Teams have struggled with Caulfield’s forward unit - and the likes of Ingo Dammersmith (three goals), Archie Loughnan (three goals) and Julian Dobosz gave Old Trinity coach Donald McDonald some headaches. “They’ve probably got the best forward line in the comp,” McDonald said.
Defenders Ed Weatherson and Ben Littleford were manful, while Hugo McGlashan (three goals) and Alex Emery (one goal) continued to hit the scoreboard from the midfield.
Over at Como Park, close friends Daniel Ward and Nathan Brown were pitted against each other - the latter having peeled off three successive victories at Old Geelong. However, Old Haileybury held onto top spot in a remarkably cluttered division, responding after a scoreless first term to win 10.10 (70) to 9.4 (58).
Without Andreas Stefanakis after his half-dozen last week, the Bloods lacked the scoring firepower, as well as the ability to get inside 50 in a two-goal first half - yet Old Geelong led by just 22 points.
From there it was the Durras Seccull show. After starting the game in the ruck, Seccull went forward, kicking four goals in the third quarter to narrow the margin to a kick at the final break, before booting another two to secure a comeback victory.
“Probably a message for the coach: don’t put your key forward in the ruck,” laughed Ward. “He won the game for us.”
Debutant Josh Gillon paired nicely with fellow under 19s graduate Hugo Lynch down back, while on-field leaders Brede Seccull and Brodie Steele were instrumental in hauling Old Haileybury back from a five-goal deficit.
“Once they got their defence (sorted) out, we couldn’t find the scoreboard,” said Old Geelong’s Nathan Brown.
Without dominant ruck Jack Sheridan, Tim Breadmore was called upon for first ruck duties and was solid, while Liam Maiden performed ably from his wing and Michael Nicholls booted three goals.
De La Salle has once again found itself on the wrong side of a thriller, its three losses this season coming at a combined total of 13 points - on this occasion falling short to Old Camberwell at Waverley Oval.
“We feel like we’re a pretty fit team, and the results have shown we can run over the top of teams in the last quarter,” said Nick Hyland, his side kicking the last three goals of the game but ultimately losing 11.9 (75) to 12.6 (78).
Anson Brownless’ side was “shell-shocked” at the start of the game but escaped early scoreboard pressure due to De La’s middling execution and conversion in the first term.
“It felt like we’d done a lot of work for not much reward,” Hyland explained.
Through the likes of Harry Veitch and James Allen, the Wellers wrest back control of the middle of the ground and interrupted De La’s swift ball movement, finding Caleb Finlayson and Liam Thomas for two second-term goals apiece and taking the lead at the long break.
From there, De La pulled the lead back to ten points late in the third but didn’t get within a kick until the dying minutes of the game, Old Camberwell able to secure possession of the ball and hold out until the final siren.
Thomas ended up with four goals for the OCs, while intercept defender Thomas Deane-Jones was outstanding for De La. “If it hadn’t been for him, we would have found ourselves further behind,” said Hyland.
Beaumaris ensured it remained in touch with the logjam of teams between first and seventh, enjoying a 65-point win over St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers.
Riley Mihailovic was best on ground, punting four goals from 21 disposals, while Riley Virtue (23 disposals, 11 clearances) and Will Nish (24 disposals) were superb.
Beaumaris will take on Old Geelong this Saturday at Banksia Reserve, with visits to Old Trinity and Old Haileybury ahead when the competition resumes on June 15th.
Josh Cowan continued his strong year for the Tigers with 37 disposals and 10 clearances, while Jack Ferraro (4 goals from 35 disposals) was excellent.
Astoundingly, just four points separate Old Haileybury (first) from Caulfield (seventh) in a freakishly close division - with Old Ivanhoe’s clash with the Bloods likely to decide first spot going into the week off.
Second-placed Old Camberwell host Caulfield Grammarians, Williamstown CYMS will visit Old Trinity, while St Bedes/Mentone will be out for its first win of the season when it takes on De La Salle.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S
Kylie LynchWilliamstown CYMS prove to be unstoppable in Women’s Premier B
Round 7 of the VAFA Prem B Women’s saw sides pick up significant wins, pushing some teams further up the ladder as the season nearly reaches the halfway mark. Williamstown CYMS continue to set the standard week after week, whilst Old Geelong maintains dominance in the competition, reaffirming their strength and finals trajectory. Despite not clinching a win, Old Xaverians continues to exhibit promising performances, indicating their potential for the second half of this season.
In an impressive display of football, the undefeated Williamstown CYMS secured a convincing victory over Aquinas, leaving them scoreless, with the final scoreline of 19.15 (129) to 0.0.
Williamstown didn’t take their foot off the pedal until the final siren, with the game intensifying in the final quarter, kicking seven goals to seal the deal. Coach Lawrence Henry says that the inclusion of their Western Jets girls added some class and polish to the team.
Notable performances came from Loren Mills, who showcased her magnetism towards the goals, kicking five for the game, as well as Alessia Acquaro, who added a remarkable four goals to the team’s tally.
Whilst Williamstown has not yet been beaten this season, Henry states “We don’t pay much attention to being undefeated. We still think there are areas of our game that we can improve. So, our focus is on that.”
“Prem B is a tough competition, so we go into every game trying to bring our best. We know if you’re a fraction off your game, any of the Prem B teams can make you pay. We’re really proud that our players keep turning up wanting to get better, put our plans into action, and give their best effort on game day,” says Henry.
However, while the scoreline may tell one side of the story, Aquinas still put up a strong fight and their defensive pressure caused Williamstown to kick 15 behinds, which must be commended.
In an exciting match, Old Geelong emerged triumphant over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, solidifying their dominance in the league. They came out strong, kicking four goals in the first quarter.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers showed their resilience in the second quarter, kicking two goals and keeping Old Geelong goalless. However, this was short-lived, as Old Geelong bounced back back in the second half with fire in their belly, kicking another four goals and only allowing the Tigers to kick one, with the final score reading 8.6 (54) – 3.8 (26).
Both teams showcased commendable skill and determination throughout the game, with Old Geelong ultimately demonstrating superior teamwork and resilience in securing the four points. Despite facing a formidable opponent in St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, Old Geelong maintained their composure and executed their game plan effectively.
Noteworthy performances for Old Geelong came from Leanora Aruci, whose four-goal effort earned her the accolade of best on ground for Old Geelong, and Matilda Arthur, who added three goals to the team’s tally.
For St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, it was Brittni Donaldson, Tayla McAlroy, and Maddi Wilson who were standouts on the day, being named the three best players for the match.
In a tightly contested clash, Beaumaris emerged victorious over Old Xaverians in what proved to be the closest match of the round, with a final score of 10.5 (65) to 6.9 (45). Despite their late entry into the competition, Old Xavs showcased their potential and resilience, hinting at a promising second half of the season that opposing teams should heed.
Standout performances for Old Xavs included Claudia Lacey, who exhibited her scoring prowess with three goals, and Anabelle Gangi, who contributed two goals in their defeat.
Meanwhile, for Beaumaris, Sienna Tedde’s exceptional performance earned her the title of best on ground with the backing of three goals, complemented by Sarah Collins who also chimed in with an impressive three-goal display.
While both teams demonstrated skill and footy prowess, the slow start from Old Xavs proved costly. However, as the season progresses, their upward trajectory suggests they will be a force to be reckoned with, while Beaumaris continues to assert their competitiveness in the league.
Fitzroy proved too strong for Westbourne Grammarians, coming up victorious by a 31-point margin with the final score 6.7 (43) to 2.0 (12). Despite Westbourne’s strong performance in the second quarter, where Temeika Cathery notched two goals, Fitzroy’s steadfast defence held firm for the rest of the game, denying their opponents any further scoring opportunities.
The stellar performance of Nadia Conte helped her team’s success, with an impressive haul of four goals and earning recognition as the best player on the field. Their cohesive teamwork and defensive resilience were instrumental in stifling Westbourne’s offensive efforts.
As the season progresses, anticipation rises for more exciting matches and captivating displays of skill from these impressive women’s teams. Round 8 will see Old Geelong take on Aquinas, who will be hungry for redemption. The steadfast Williamstown CYMS will take on Beaumaris at their home ground, while Fitzroy will face St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in what should be a closely contested match. Finally, Old Xaverians will go head-to-head with Westbourne Grammarians, with both teams trying to climb up the ladder.

PREMIER C MEN’S
Raj JohnstonPlethora of heavy defeats as the top 3 rampage
The big defeats continued in Round 7 of the Premier C Men’s competition, with the top three all securing damaging victories. There were goals aplenty to boost percentages for Parkdale, AJAX, and Old Carey. Whilst Marcellin fought tooth and nail to secure the four points, thwarting Oakleigh’s closest chance yet at victory.
AJAX continued their dominant form in 2024 with a commanding 126-point victory against the Monash Blues. AJAX were the better side throughout the afternoon as the Blues struggled to keep up with the home team’s fast scoring with 17 goals kicked to half time.
The victors had many contributors to its monstrous scoreline, with Richie Simon continuing his stellar form with a further five goals this week, as did Justin Vogel, whilst Adam Caplan contributed four goals.
AJAX will be looking to continue this trend of big wins to close in on first place, only separated by percentage, whilst the Blues will continue to fight to climb the ladder with positions still fluctuating.
Old Carey defeated Glen Eira/Old McKinnon by 80 points at Packer Park. Both sides were well matched in the first quarter with just the one point separating the two teams in favour of Glen Eira. Whilst Old Carey broke away after quarter time, the Gryphons were lucky to not be facing a larger deficit as inaccuracy cost Old Carey a bigger lead.
The second half belonged to the visitors who piled on a further fourteen goals compared to the Gryphons five. Trent Warren had another standout game, kicking six goals for Old Carey, whilst Riley Thompson coming off his five goal haul last week, backed it up this week with four majors to his name. If Old Carey want to further boost their percentage and push for a top two spot, the challenge will be to convert more behinds into goals.
In a one-sided affair, the Parkdale Vultures defeated Mazenod by 79 points. This was a critical game for Mazenod, despite being the underdogs, a win would’ve kept them breathing down the necks of the top four.
The Vultures dominated from start to finish, extending their lead at each break, however, as has been a common theme across Premier C, inaccuracy in front of goal denied the Vultures a greater winning margin, finishing with a scoreline of 14.23 (107).
The league’s leading goal-kicker Mitch Brown increased his goal tally for the season with a further five majors this week. Jack Edwards, Josh Stolp and Jarrod Peake also stood up for the winning side. This loss leaves Mazenod one game and a fair percentage gap out of the top four with a tough matchup against AJAX looming next round.
In a reasonably close match at Trevor Barker Oval, the Hampton Rovers were victorious over PEGS by 28 points.
Whilst the Rovers started well and took a 16-point lead into quarter-time, the second quarter belonged to PEGS as the visitors kicked three goals and narrowed the margin. However, the Rovers turned things around in the premiership quarter kicking four goals to PEGS’ one as Joshua Docking did well in front of goals ending the day with three majors.
A 33-point deficit was going to be hard for PEGS to account for in the final term, and whilst PEGS did play better in the fourth quarter, they left their run too late as the Rovers claimed the four points with an 11.15 (81) to 8.5 (53) win. Hugo Lay, Harry Crisp and Ryan Leslie were among the best players for the Rovers.
Despite their best efforts to record their first win of the season, Oakleigh lost to Marcellin in a nail-biting contest by 11 points.
In front of their home crowd, Oakleigh had a dream start, kicking five goals to Marcellin’s one in the first quarter. Marcellin fought back after quarter-time, outscoring Oakleigh and taking a 1-point lead into half-time. The game was in the balance and was anyone’s for the taking. Both sides were hungry for the contest and ready to make an impact in the second half.
The third quarter was evenly fought with three goals to two in favour of Oakleigh, the final quarter started with the home side leading by five points. Whilst Oakleigh kicked one early extending the lead to 11 points, Marcellin’s players stood up and moved the ball well to kick the next four goals, enough to see them through to the end of the game. Special mention to Oakleigh’s Luke Ashen who contributed seven of Oakleigh’s eleven goals.
Round 8 is important with all sides looking to finish on a high before the weekend off.
An exciting game looms between PEGS and the Parkdale Vultures. Whilst the Vultures have asserted their dominance at the top of the ladder with a healthy percentage, PEGS have had some good performances this year but have struggled to be consistent. Nonetheless, PEGS will be up for the challenge hosting the Vultures on their home turf.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon will meet the Monash Blues in a battle of 8th v 9 th. The Blues were dominant in Premier C back in 2022 but have struggled to return to those highs this year, so will be looking for a win against last years Division 1 premiers.
Elsewhere, AJAX host Mazenod at Gary Smorgon Oval, the Hampton Rovers face off against Marcellin at Trevor Barker, whilst Oakleigh, still searching for their first win, travel north to play Old Carey in Bulleen.

Big V Squads Announced
The VAFA congratulates all players selected in the initial Big V Men’s & Women’s squads to face the Perth Football League on Sunday July 7. Both squads are packed with elite talent, and it will be a challenging job for Men’s coach Greg Hutchison & Women’s coach Paul Groves to trim down to the final 23.
“We entered the selection process with a really open mind,” said Hutchison, who is coaching the Big V for a second consecutive year. “You need a large and deep squad, given we still have six weeks to go. And we’re also really open-minded about what the final team looks like. It will largely depend on form - we have a good block of games to keep monitoring. It’s been a pleasingly difficult job to narrow the squad down and make sure we have the right mix.”
“We’ve gone for versatility in the squad,” said Groves, who is also coaching the Big V for a second consecutive year. “The game will likely be played on a larger ground in WA, so we’ll need a balance between inside power and outside run. The ability to play multiple roles is a huge advantage in State footy because it gives us options to switch things around and maximise match-ups.”

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Bronte Whyte (Coburg)
The VAFA congratulates Bronte Whyte from Coburg Women’s Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 7 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Bronte has starred across the Reserves and Seniors this season, most impressively featuring in the best on the weekend in Coburg’s dominant win over Monash Blues. Bronte is impactful with the footy in hand and shows all the signs of what it takes to be a team player.
What the Club said:
Bronte joined Coburg from Leongatha at the start of preseason after moving to Melbourne for Uni. She has been training with Collingwood in the VFLW and has been impressing all preseason. Recently she had broken ribs and missed a number of weeks but came back without missing a beat.
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Jake Dempster (Power House)
The VAFA congratulates Jake Dempster from Power House FC, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 7. Jake Dempster has found some form in recent weeks after breaking into the Senior side in Round 2. He was instrumental in Power House’s 249-point rampage on the weekend, playing a crucial role around the ground.
What the club said:
Jake played his junior football with the Echuca Bombers and has moved to Melbourne pursuing work opportunities as a carpenter. Jake has fitted into Power House seamlessly and is a humble young man who expresses himself on the football field. He possesses excellent foot skills on both sides of the body and is a great asset on the wing and more recently as an attacking player out of defence.
Power House coach, Jeff Scotland adds that “Jake is eminently coachable and embraces every role thrown at him with enthusiasm and diligence. His character, skill and football acumen are first class and we can see Jake leading our midfield in the years to come!”

DIVISION 1 MEN’S
Liam ColeHeartbreak for the Preston Bullants as Penola Lions surge
Round 7 proved Division 1 is an even competition where any side can beat anyone on their day as the Preston Bullants narrowly miss out on the points again.
UHS-VU remain undefeated after they beat Ormond by 53 points at E.E Gunn Reserve. It was a much-anticipated game, and it was the Vultures who came to play from the very start with a six-goal to two first quarter.
The methodical ball movement in the first term from the likes of Todd Cracknell in defence was hard to stop early for the Monders and the size of Vulture midfielders really challenged them. A great stoppage goal in the second quarter by Esubalew Ramsay alongside James Dimattina with two crafty finishes personified this.
Meanwhile, In the third term the pressure from the Vultures resulted in three goals from turnover early, but credit to the Monders for not falling away as they kicked four goals in a row late with the help of Sam Stait who has had a brilliant fortnight. Vultures forward Ned CouperJohnston kicked a goal right on the three-quarter time siren for a much needed steadier.
When the game was there to be won it was the Vultures skipper Harrison Kennedy who led from the front having a great highlights package of his own for the day. This included a great centre clearance at the start of the last term which resulted in a goal and added three of his own to the scoreboard throughout the game. Vultures forward Brandon Jackson was instrumental kicking six goals including three in a row in the last term to come out trumps.
The Parkside Devils won yet another close game this season defeating the Preston Bullants by two points. It was a game of momentum shifts with the Bullants skipper Tom Hill kicking the first two goals of the game followed by three in a row from the Devils in the first term.
The biggest margin of the game was only 16 points and Preston had control in the midfield for the majority of the match thanks to the help of Sean Calcedo and Rory Howard leading them to a nine-point lead at three-quarter time.
Meanwhile, at the 13-minute mark the Preston Bullants had one hand on the four points with a lead of 17 points until the Devils stormed home, kicking three in a row to snatch victory. The newly promoted Devils continue to impress, now in in second place on the ladder and clearly have a great pressure game which should definitely stack up in finals.
The Old Peninsula Pirates had another great performance defeating the West Brunswick Magpies by 54 points. The Pirates were on from the very start and so was their midfield mix with the likes of Jake Lovett and Kurt Thiele getting it done in ground ball which helped them get a 12-point buffer at quarter-time.
Another highlight was the defensive pressure from the Pirates with Ben Williamson having a superb day out in his 100-game milestone and Finn Bardolph making a reputation for himself as one of the leading half-back runners in the competition.
Meanwhile, the Pirates midfielders proved they have great versatility around the ground with skipper George Fletcher alongside Bailey Payze who both kicked four for the day.
Prahran got over the top of the Kew Bears in a hardfought win by 30 points. The way Prahran defended for the day was the highlight as their team defence restricted leading goal scorer in the competition Ned Waters and top 10 leading goal scorer William Llewelyn to zero goals between them.
They also showed they have other avenues to scoring with their methodical ball movement out of their back half on display as Jayden Williams excelled. The game was never out of reach for the Bears only trailing by 16-points at three-quarter time, but Prahran’s midfield of James Musster and Mackenzie Mayne proved too good.
The Therry Penola Lions brought up their second win of the season defeating the Old Yarra Cobras by 25 points. It was a battle between both forward lines as the Cobras connected well inside 50 early with Anthony Raso having another solid performance with three goals. Each quarter was a tight tussle with lead changes in each break, but the Lions had the fresher legs having a six to two goal last term to claim the four points.
Jack Pelosi had a dominant game for Therry Penola with five goals and really showed his forward craft when it mattered most. While it hasn’t been the best start of the season for the skipper Joel Costello, he continues to lead from the front.
Round 8 entails must-win games for the Bears and the Preston Bullants if they want to make a surge towards a heated top four.
UHS-VU are back at home as they play the Magpies. The Magpies pride themselves in the contested ball game and were well beaten against the Pirates in that department. The Magpies midfield this week will have to find an extra gear to negate the big-bodied Vulture engine room.
The Therry Penola Lions take on the Preston Bullants at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. The Preston Bullants are playing some really good football at the moment with their senior players stepping up but can’t quite do it for four quarters.
The Pirates are up against Prahran in the game of the round. Pirates defender Killian Doyle will be unavailable for another week which is a big loss for his side in the fight for a top four spot. The midfield battle will no doubt have a huge say on who prevails at Dallas Brooks Park.
The Bears will face an Ormond team ready to respond after the loss against the Vultures. Efficiency going inside 50 continues to be a problem for the Bears especially when their top flights aren’t firing.
The kings of the close finishes, the Devils are up against the Old Yarra Cobras who are still looking to get on the board in season 2024.

Annie IrelandCollegians register first win in new competition as reigning premiers exposed
It was all happening in a big Round 7 in Division 1 Women’s on the weekend, as Marcellin’s flag defence was exposed, and Collegians won their first match since being elevated into the competition.
Old Brighton proved themselves as clear favourites for the flag, after they knocked off Marcellin by 27 points on Saturday afternoon. The win was made even sweeter given they knocked off the reigning premiers away from home.
Both sides were well in the contest in the first half, going into the main break with Marcellin 1.1 (7) and Old Brighton 2.2 (14). It was a strong second half that set up Brighton, after they scored 28 points after half time compared to Marcellin’s eight points.
Once again, Lily Tait stole the show kicking another three goals to take her tally to 18 goals for the season. Charley Hodgson, Katie Grant, India Tait, Sienna Courtney and Shanelle Hodgkinson rounded out the best players for Old Brighton.
Despite the result for Marcellin, Laura Robertson and Charlotte McGilp had strong games for Marcellin, whilst Annaleise Xanthos, Annabel Scott, and Zoe Glascott all contributed with a goal apiece.
Next week, Marcellin will take on Parkdale, with a result which could prove to be costly for both teams in the scheme of the season. A loss for Marcellin will see them equal on the ladder with Parkdale and potentially three games behind top of the table Brighton. On the other side of the ledger, a win for Parkdale would see them level with Marcellin and potentially Collegians, whilst a loss would push them down the pack.
Old Brighton will host Old Melburnians on Saturday morning.
Collegians nailed their first win of the season against Old Melburnians on Saturday morning at Elsternwick Park. Collegians looked to be the stronger team from the outset in a low scoring first half, both teams looking slightly inaccurate in front of goal.
Collegians came out firing in the second half to put away Old Melburnians, kicking 2.2 whilst holding their opposition to just four behinds for the remainder of the game. With inaccuracies in front of goals on either side, the result could have been quite different had the teams kicked straighter.
Annabel Schmidt was the clear standout for best on ground on the weekend – kicking three goals and essentially winning the game off her own boot for her team. Chelsea McDermott and Annabel Schmidt also had strong games.
For Old Melburnians, Ellen Williams was their most impressive also scoring a goal, whilst Milly Treacy and Amelia Kogler rounded out the top three.
Next week, Old Melburnians find themselves in a tough fixture against flag favourites Old Brighton and away from home. Collegians will come up against Old Haileybury in a game they will hope to win in order to stay within striking distance of Old Brighton on top of the ladder.
The Parkdale Vultures continued to show off their improved skills on the weekend with a 30-point win over Old Haileybury to move up to fourth place and now sitting one win off second on the ladder.
Old Haileybury started on the front foot at the beginning of the game, yet Parkdale started to fire in the second quarter. Inaccuracy for Parkdale plagued their chances of an early runaway lead, instead taking only a one-goal lead into the main break. However, after half-time the girls came out stronger kicking four goals in the third quarter to Haileybury’s one.
Parkdale scored another 2.3 in the final quarter to add some handy percentage after putting away Haileybury.
Co-captains Bridget Hanrahan and Isabella Scaunich were once again impressive for Haileybury, but it was Ella Gown who was their best on ground for the day.
However, it was Sienna Symons who was the clear best on ground for the day given she kicked five of Parkdale’s eight goals. Captain Breanna Allen was impressive, as was Lucy Burgess with a goal to her name.
Next up, Parkdale have a big match up with Marcellin in a potentially season-defining clash, whereby a win will see them stay within reaching distance with the top of the table. Meanwhile, Old Haileybury will take on Collegians.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S
Jainarayan TiwariUpsets galore at the hands of MHSOB and St Mary’s
The excitement continues as Round 7 of Division 2 wraps up in power-packed action. Some teams impressively rebound after consecutive defeats, while others continue to struggle in the competition.
Bulleen Templestowe was no match for Brunswick on the weekend, who are the current table toppers and have been leading the charge in the Division 2 Men’s competition all season. Brunswick have once again produced a massive victory against Bulleen Templestowe, getting the job done by 111 points.
The Nobs were on their very best game right from the outset, surging ahead by 5 goals at the quarter time break. The Bullants to their credit were able to continuously hit the scoreboard every quarter, but they were strangled by the forward momentum of the Nobs, particularly in the third term when they produced a barrage of 8 goals.
Brunswick star forward, who is arguably on track to crack 100 goals for the season if he keeps going at this pace, slotted another 8 majors on the weekend, ably supported by Rowan Hogenbirk who had 7 goals of his own. Corey Shiels and Ashwyn Mohandas were both dual goal kickers for Bulleen.
The final scoreboard reflected a 151-40 annihilation. Brunswick coach Tom Hunter said, “We’re just looking for ways to be better week to week. The area we are most proud of is the way we’ve been defending. We’ve been hungry to be good in that part of the game.”
After a string of tough losses, South Melbourne Districts finally broke back onto the winners list, delighting fans with a thrilling 35-point victory over Aquinas at the Lindsay Hasset Oval. South Melbourne was dominant from the first siren kicking the first 4 goals of the game whilst keeping Aquinas to just 2 behinds with their defence standing tall like a brick wall.
In their recent string of matches, the Districts have run out of legs late in the game, but the side are to be commended for a full four quarter effort where they built on momentum to secure a percentage boosting win, 102-67.
Jesse Andrew kicked 4 for the winning side and Cameron Robertson put on a best on ground display, whilst Damien Pelosi led the charge at the other end booting 3 goals for Aquinas, with Joshua Glennie the best player for the travelling side.
After the team’s victory, South Melbourne’s coach, Nick Abbott, said, “I am pleased with the team’s performance. The last few weeks were disappointing, but now we have senior players returning to the side. We have nothing major planned for next week; we are just focusing on winning more games.”
In a thrilling, neck-and-neck encounter at the Melbourne High School, MHSOB secured an impressive upset over Whitefriars by 7 points with a final score of 101 to 94.
In a high scoring affair with lead changes all the way through the premiership quarter, the scoreboard read 74-apiece heading into the final change in a nail-biting contest.
MHSOB’s Mathew Pereira booted the final goal to close out the game, securing the four points for his side. Overall, Pereira kicked 5 goals and was unstoppable. The Friars fell just short in the last couple of minutes. Whitefriars’ Sam Kieseker’s 6-goal haul was a highlight, whilst Max Warrick impressed.
MHSOB coach, Bernie Pretty, said, “We are a relatively new group, and it was terrific. The last-minute goal was unexpected. We tried applying a lot of pressure against the opposition, and now we need to win more games as we are eyeing the top-four spot.
St Mary’s Salesian now have two wins on the trot in another upset of the round, defeating Wattle Park 9472. In a gripping match full of twists and turns, St Mary’s surged ahead in the opening quarters, showing off their skills and teamwork. But when it seemed like the Animals were down and out, they rallied in the third quarter, showing true grit and determination.
Heading into the final term St Mary’s had their nose in front on 54 points, with Wattle Park in striking range on 51. In a high scoring quarter to round out the match, it was the Saints who were the stronger side, displaying heart and resolve to clinch the win on home soil.
Trent Ryan, Nathan Catherwood, Jos Op’t Hoog, and Lachlan Russell each scored a couple of goals for St Mary’s. Meanwhile, Baxter Newbegin took charge in the forward line for Wattle Park kicking 3 goals.
An elated St Mary’s coach Clay Tait said, “It was a competitive game against Wattle Park, especially the third quarter when they gained momentum. In the fourth quarter, we as a team only wanted to be positive and not feel a lot of pressure.”
Another disappointing day for Hawthorn at the Rathmines Road Reserve as Elsternwick surged to a 36-point victory, with the final score reflecting 113 to 77. It wasn’t until the second quarter when the Wickers really got going with a 7.5 rampage.
The Hawks tried their best to regain territory in the third kicking 5 to get themselves back in the contest but were too late to join the party. Once again, Elsternwick’s vicecaptain Spencer Hankin kicked 5-goals, and his teammate Christopher Marinis finished with a 3-goal haul. Hawthorn certainly had their chances in the second but failed to convert them into goals, with their defence efforts unable to halt the onslaught from the visitors.
As Round 8 rapidly approaches, anticipation runs high as the middle order try to break into that illustrious top 4. Brunswick come up against Whitefriars at Gillion Oval, while the stage is set for a showdown between Aquinas and Elsternwick.
Bulleen Templestowe will need to strategise their path to redemption against MHSOB, as St Mary’s Salesian gears up to face Hawthorn in their annual Wings match at Rathmines Road Reserve. South Melbourne Districts will aim to keep momentum going after a recent victory while the hosts, Wattle Park look to get back on the winners list.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN’S
Susan Miller Hawthorn come over the top in a fourth quarter steal
Jumping into Round 7 of the Division 2 Women’s competition, let’s take stock of how teams are fearing as we approach the halfway point of the season. Hampton Rovers and Glen Eira/Old McKinnon are leading the charge at the top of the table having only dropped one match thus far. Nipping at the heels of the top two are Power House and Old Trinity with the door still open for several sides to push for finals contention.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon looked more than comfortable at home in their 32-point victory over Oakleigh. The Gryphons took full charge from the outset hitting the scoreboard early and extended their lead at every change, whilst holding Oakleigh scoreless until the final term.
Krusher’s captain Ruby Ford has continued her stellar form this season, leading from the front on a tough outing against a formidable opponent. Whilst this match up did not go their way with only a single point on the scoreboard, Oakleigh will look to recharge and find their winning form to stay within striking distance of the top 4.
Zoe Rossiter was the sole dual goal kicker, shining up forward yet again for Glen Eira, whilst Madeline Box and skipper Gemma Strangio joined her in the best.
In the closest match of the round, Hawthorn hosted Mazenod in a back-and-forth tussle that concluded with a 4-point margin. Mazenod took a lead in the first scoring the only goal of the opening quarter. This was met with a prompt response from the home side who scored two consecutive majors to hold a 5-point lead at half time.
The momentum swinged the way of Mazenod once again as they took control in the premiership quarter to convert their deficit into a lead of 8 points whilst keeping the Hawks scoreless. Ultimately it was the almighty Hawks who finished strong kicking two straight to fly home victorious.
Emily Truscott kicked 2 majors and featured in the best alongside Amelia Dunn for Hawthorn, whilst Emily Skrzyniarz was deemed best afield for Mazenod.
Over at Whitefriars College, the Whitefriars came up against Power House with both sides looking to get back on the winners list following Round 6 losses. The game got going with no real sense of urgency from either side of the scoreboard. However, it was Power House who got going off the back of the first break, kicking 2.3 to the Friars’ single behind in the second quarter.
And just like that the game got away from Whitefriars and they were unable to close the margin, Power House winning 32-13 to bolster them into third spot on the ladder with a very healthy percentage.
Anna Jones earned best on accolades for the winning side whilst Rachel Smith is to be commended for a fantastic four-quarter effort for Whitefriars.
In their quest to retain top spot, Hampton Rovers got the job done at home, defeating Richmond Central by a comfortable 16 points in a low-scoring affair. The Rovers scored the first goal of the match in the opening term and were able to build successively from there. Richmond fought tooth and nail to get back in the game, finishing with just one less scoring shot, but their inaccuracy proved costly.
Richmond’s two goals for the match came off the boot of Jordyn Toms-Wedge, whilst the Rovers boasted 5 individual goal-kickers, one of whom was Maegan Miller who was deemed best afield.
It was the second half where the Rovers really shone, coming away victorious 34-18.
Rounding out the weekend in the Division 2 Women’s competition Old Trinity came up against the combined Old Camberwell/AJAX. Trinity produced their highest scoring match of the season, amassing 60 points to come away with a 39-point victory.
Old Trinity managed 20 scoring shots for the afternoon, with the potential to produce even greater winning margins, had 12 of those kicks gone through for goals. The skipper, Bella Eames led the charge for the winning side booting 3 goals, supported by vice-captain Hannah Lee who contributed 2 goals in a best on ground performance.
Old Camberwell/AJAX are to be commended for their fight in every match as an amalgamated squad. Alannah Frampton earned best-on recognition whilst the teams three goals came from Gypsy Folwell, Romy Klooger, and Maclyn Matheson.
Round 8 has some exciting contests on the horizon with some evenly matched sides facing off to further their 2024 campaign. Old Camberwell/AJAX will have their work cut out for them as they face an in-form Glen Eira/Old McKinnon.
Over at Rathmines Road Reserve, Hawthorn has their annual ‘Wings’ day and will host Richmond Central. Both sides are looking for their fourth win of the season, currently filling out the middle order. Meanwhile Old Trinity will travel to come up against Oakleigh.
Power House will be looking to continue their winning form as they face off against Mazenod, who are still searching for their first four points of the season. Rounding out the weekend, Whitefriars will host Hampton Rovers and will need to match the high-scoring prowess of the Rovers should they wish to defeat a side in good stead for finals contention.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S
Callum FarquharCanterbury surge to win thriller as Power House rebound in ruthless fashion
Round 7 of Division 3 Men’s footy was a mixed bag of results, from nail-biting finishes to the biggest of annihilations.
The round opened with a classy victory from North Brunswick, who staunchly defended against La Trobe University. The Bulls kept La Trobe scoreless in the first quarter, gaining an early four-goal buffer. La Trobe’s scoreboard concerns continued well into the game, scoring just 1.3 by three-quarter-time.
By this time the game was already out of reach, so despite an improved four-goal last term, North Brunswick had powered away to a comfortable 58-point victory.
Fletcher Banfield and Adam Tsardakis were best on for the Bulls whilst Simon Woodward kicked three goals.
Archie Conboy and Jonty Randall were two that played defiantly for La Trobe, as Beau Lawrence managed to snag multiple goals in La Trobe’s low-scoring effort.
La Trobe now sit a game outside the top five, and will look to make amends against Albert Park next week.
In a back-and-forth affair, Canterbury’s late surge at the death against St John’s has secured their fourth win on the trot.
The game was played with swings of momentum, as flurries of goals dictated the match. Canterbury opened the game with four straight goals, before St John’s pegged it back to a 16-point quarter-time deficit.
A second quarter of five goals to one erased the Cobra’s strong start, but from then on, it was an arm wrestle for the lead. After Canterbury’s first third-quarter goal, the lead never extended beyond a kick for the majority of the second half. St John’s Tyler Neal kicked a handy goal halfway through the last to put the JOCs up 73-63, but Canterbury’s Brad Kelleher booted a reply just a minute later and it was game on again.
Lachy Shearer of the Cobras kicked a game-tying goal in the 24th minute, and a potential draw hung in the balance. However, in the dying stages, Canterbury’s Jayden Cutts kicked a match-winner that sealed the fate of the game.
Costly inaccuracy will be rued by St Johns, as three late points were unable to be capitalised upon. Another potential finals preview faces them next week against Power House.
After a 1-2 start to the year, Canterbury have bounced back to their form of 2023. Hosting Eley Park next week, the Cobras will be aiming to lock in their current top four spot.
Power House have rebounded from their Round 6 loss in merciless fashion against Eley Park, destroying the Sharks by an astounding 249 points. Scoring nearly 300 points, Power House kicked a staggering 45 goals on Saturday, including 14 in the last quarter.
The win was a full team effort, with 14 individual goalkickers. It didn’t prevent any standout performances however, with Rob Dyer kicking 11, and Matt Auchettl and Luke Stubbs both booting five.
Despite the thumping, the Sharks fought with heart, as Matt Gallagher, Aaron Williams, Joel Kennedy, and Lachie Blunden earned best-on-ground votes.
Richmond Central remain a smoky finals chance this season, after narrowly escaping the in-form Chadstone. Chadstone, who won their first Senior game in 3,256 days last week, showed it wasn’t a flash in the pan, with a defiant effort against the Snakes.
However, the Snakes proved too good, grinding their way to a 16-point win, 70-54. Nicholas Poole played his best footy for the season, as Charles Spring was once again in Richmond Central’s best.
Anthony Brown (4) continued his goalkicking form for the Synners, as Adam MacGregor and Andrew Pilbrow were also best on. Chadstone have the bye this week, and will happily rest with the improvements made over their first seven games.
A slow-starting Swinburne University accelerated to a dominant 94-point win over Albert Park. Five goals straight gave the Falcons a seven-point quarter-time lead, but a six goal to one second term erased any chance of an upset.
Seven consecutive goals in the premiership quarter saw Swinburne continue their dominance, as Albert Park had no answers for the Razorback attack.
Zachary Cooke and Leonard McClay were Swinburne’s top players, as Nick Ferguson and Jai Lamperd kicked four each.
The absence of Albert Park’s key forward Jack Lee has not gone unnoticed, as the Falcons have been unable to score over 70 since his last appearance in Round 5.
Round 8’s shapes to be an enthralling fixture before the King’s Birthday bye week.
La Trobe host Albert Park, with La Trobe needing a win to stay in touch with the top five. Eley Park will take the trip to Canterbury, hoping to avoid another heavy defeat.
In what is tipped to be match of the round, Power House and St John’s face off in a heavyweight clash. Two consecutive losses would be a devastating blow to the JOCs promising season, as Power House will aim to avoid complacency after their cruisy Round 7 win. Boasting the two highest percentages in the competition, this game presents as a gripping blockbuster.
North Brunswick’s unbeaten streak could continue against Box Hill North, but the Demons’ refreshed return from the bye could cause a boiler at Allard Park.
Swinburne close out the round against Richmond Central. A win for the Snakes places them back in finals contention, so expect a gritty match. Chadstone have the bye this week.

Old Xaverians dazzle under lights as competition heats up
As we approach the official mid-way point in the year, many teams are beginning to gain momentum and emerge as premiership contenders in the Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition.
The opening matchup of Round 8 saw Old Xaverians continue their incredible form, thumping Beaumaris under lights at Banksia reserve.
This was a one-way affair right from the outset with a scintillating 46-1 point opening quarter that would set the tone for the rest of the contest, as Old Xavs ran away resounding 99-point winners.
Charlie Christopher enjoyed a Friday night out in front of the big sticks, slotting four majors, whilst Eddie Paul was also impressive, finishing his night with three. Thomas Delahunt, Harry Mcauliffe, Tom Scalzo and Gerard Forrest each concluded with two. Ed Dalton, Xavier Austin, Harry Bird, and Hugo Wyman were also dominant in the blowout win.
For Beaumaris, it was a disappointing outing. They have now succumbed to a 2-6 win-loss ratio and currently dwindle in the bottom half of the ladder. Mitchell Davidson and Ned Bodi continued their form for the sharks, whilst Jacob Whitehouse and Angus Marcombe impressed.
To kick off Saturday’s match ups, ladder leaders Old Brighton hosted St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at home.
From the outset, Old Brighton held a commanding lead, maintaining it for a majority of the day.
It was the skipper Jonah Campigli who shone brightest on the day, kicking a round-high seven goals, and leading Old Brighton to a 24-point victory.
Luke Travers chipped in with three majors, whilst Cooper Dowe, Thomas Marriott, Oliver Aloi and James Clarkson guided the way to a strong win.
Despite the loss, St Bedes/Mentone showed moments of promise throughout the contest. Liam Bowles was prolific down forward, finishing with five goals. Keanu Nadji was named best afield, whilst Sacha Dimachki, Jude Fountain, Thomas Aughterson and Jude McCormack put in strong performances.
Over at TH King Oval, St Kevin’s pushed past De La Salle, claiming a 24-point victory.
De La was able to keep themselves within striking distance all day, until they fell away late to endure another antagonising defeat.
George Delimitrou was strong in the win, whilst Paul Parakilas, Fred Noble, Xavier Duke, Sebastian Duffy and Ben Ball all put in notable performances for SKOB.
De La captain Joshua Stewart continued his strong form, whilst Ashley Margerison, Joel Tyquin, Ethan MacBeth, Josh Cumberlidge and Thomas Eyles were impressive in the loss.
Despite being winless in 2024, De La Salle continue to improve and gain momentum and will look to the latter half of the season to build on opportunities and finish strong.
Touted as one of the more exciting matchups of the Round, a tight contest at Crawford Oval saw University Blues triumph over Old Scotch
Remaining neck-and-neck for a majority of the day, it was the Blues who would seize the vital moments of the game, running away with a 10-point victory.
Johnny Pring was excellent, whilst Max Diffey, George McCulloch, Oliver Grodski, Lachlan Rees and Max Duffell amongst the best players.
Old Scotch have been left to rue their missed chances in front of goal, a defining feature being their wayward kicking in front of the big sticks.
Captain Will Hucker impressed, with Aiden Johnson, Henry Long and Matthew Mayes also being prolific in the loss.
The final game of Round 8 showcased Caulfield Grammarians and Williamstown CYMS in an intriguing matchup at Glen Huntly Park.
Both sides needing victories to stay in touch with the top half of the ladder, it was Caulfield who prevailed, running away as 22-point victors.
An important day for the side, it was Callum Hankin who dominated the contest, slotting six majors to guide the side to a memorable win. Sam Haffenden, Hamish McInerney, Hugh McKenzie, Max Kaufmana and Kalan May were also crucial to the cause.
Jai Ryan and Liam Taylor kicked two apiece for the CY’s. Williamstown CYMS remain tethered to second last in the standings, with optimism for the second half of the year.
Round 9 poses some exciting matchups in Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition.
St Bedes/Mentone and University Blues will do battle in a mouthwatering Friday night clash, whilst St Kevin’s and Old Xaverians will meet in a top of the table matchup. Both results will have immense ramifications on the season.
Caulfield Grammarians will look to improve their record when they meet Beaumaris on Saturday morning, while De La Salle will search for its first win over a determined Old Scotch side, and Old Brighton will look to continue their strong form against an unproven Williamstown CYMS outfit.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Breanna Allen (Parkdale Vultures)
50
50
Congratulations to Bre, Parkdale Vultures Women’s side Captain! Bre always leads by example, she is known for her positivity and making sure there is energy amongst the team. She is a skilful ruck, which she has developed and mastered throughout her junior and senior career. Parkdale Vultures thanks you for your great leadership and heres to another 50!
Naomi Russo (Parkdale Vultures)
Congratulations to Naomi for playing 50 Games for Parkdale! Naomi can play anywhere on the ground, a true utility and a great asset to Parkdale’s side. Naomi has been a part of the leadership team for many years, where she leads by her actions and ensures everyone in the team gets the best out of themselves.
Yisroel Rosenbaum (AJAX)
50
Congratulations to Yis on 50 games! An ironman off the field, and on the field, he’s always bringing the heat and will tackle any challenge. For years when the Sunday team struggled to get numbers to preseason, Yis Rosenbaum would be at every session giving it his all. Rewarded for years of commitment to the team with the role as deputy vice-captain this season, the 50-game milestone for the dashing half back flanker is a testament to the hard work, dedication and determination Rosenbaum has displayed over a long period of time.
Harrison Beveridge (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
50
Congratulations Harrison on reaching 50 games. ‘Bevo’ is a very versatile player who can do a role as a hard-working backman or swing forward to cause headaches with his height and pace. Having tasted Senior Football in 2023, Bevo is one of the hardest workers off the field and always strives to get the best out of himself. We look forward to many more quality games from Bevo in the years to come at Packer Park.
50 Liam Taffe (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
Congratulations Liam on reaching 50 games. From the McKinnon Secondary College Class of 2019, ‘Doug’ graduated from our U19s program into a hard running wingman with a terrific right boot to deliver the football lace-out to the forwards. A fantastic clubman and all-round ripping bloke, we look forward to Liam continuing to display his talents both on and off Packer Park.
Josh Mourant (St John’s OC)
100
Congratulations to St John’s Josh Mourant on 100 club games. Josh came to the club as a 17-year-old in 2012 where he earnt his nickname “Future”. This was the belief he would be the future of St John’s O.C.F.C. Starting in the reserves as a centre half forward, Josh quickly made his way into the senior side as a regular. He also played in the 2016 senior grand final side. Leaving the club for 3 years where he played for Keysborough, Josh returned this season and quickly earned his respect. Josh is now the VC of the seniors & a pivotal part of the side playing in the ruck & deep forward. An all-round great clubman & well-respected part of our St John’s community. The future is now.
