SEASON 2022 - June 4
EDITORIAL
VAFA Football and Umpiring Team
Matt Collister General Manager Football and Umpire Operations
It is with some trepidation that we cast our minds back 12 months, but to do so would return you right to the middle of the first lockdown that impacted the VAFA season of season 2021. That lockdown saw no matches played across Rounds 8 and 9 before we started back up in Round 10 before ultimately spluttering towards an incomplete season.
all men’s players who are born in the year 2002 the opportunity to still experience and participate in Holmesglen Under 19 Men’s football in 2022 following the interruptions of last year, has again proven to be a successful initiative. There are 48 teams participating in the VAFA Under 19 Men’s competition this season and a positive experience in Under 19 Men’s football is vital for clubs to continue to provide a pathway for their Under 19 Men’s players and to help retain those players in future years.
Fair enough if that flashback didn’t fill you with much joy, but the reason for doing so was to let everyone know how much better things have been so far in season 2022 in the world of VAFA football. So far, we have already completed the first eight (8) rounds of the season uninterrupted and despite a couple of competition bye rounds coming up across June and July there is nothing (hopefully) slowing us down for the remainder of the year.
Yes, there has been some challenges present themselves in season 2022 to do with registration numbers and team entries, but these concerns are not unique just to the VAFA. Some return to play studies that have been conducted following the COVID-lockdown era show a decline in the participation in team sports as individual activities (which became prominent during lockdowns) and social activities that are low cost and less structured begin to become more appealing. It is incumbent on the VAFA to meet these challenges head on to ensure we get as many players participating in the VAFA competition as possible.
In regard to umpiring, pleasingly over 400 boundary, field and goal umpires are currently registered with the VAFA for season 2022. In Round 6, the VAFA celebrated Community Umpiring Week with the aim of encouraging people to get involved in umpiring with the VAFA. Several clubs were able to show their appreciation on matchday to umpires whilst also sharing the umpire respect messaging across their social media channels whilst the umpires were also treated to AFL umpires Simon Meredith, Chris Donlon, Patrick Cran and Michael Saunders attending a training session that week. Additionally, the VAFA secured industry leading guest speaker Carol Fox to speak at the BJS Women’s Umpire Academy Season Launch back on Monday 21 March.
We have seen the first year of the 2022-2024 VAFA Women’s Football Competition Structure Game Plan roll out with the William Buck Women’s Premier competition extending out to sixteen (16) matches for the season and as a result providing players in that competition with two (2) extra matches compared to previous years.
Looking ahead to the coming months, the VAFA will meet with the four football Advisory Groups to conduct a mid-season review of its competitions. Consultation with clubs and other stakeholders will continue towards the end of the season when we once again circulate the End of Season Football Operations Survey to all clubs.
The VAFA’s Independent Permit Committee has interviewed eleven (11) Category 5 and Category 6 point players who have transferred into the VAFA this season as part of the rigorous and transparent Player Permit Application Process in 2022. This process has helped to ensure that the VAFA successfully upholds its Amateur Status Guidelines.
However, what will undoubtedly generate the most excitement is finals football and planning is already underway to source suitable venues and facilities to conduct all 148 finals matches that need to be played commencing from the weekend Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July. Completing a full final series for the first time since 2019 is filling everyone with anticipation and excitement across the VAFA community.
Consultation with clubs and other stakeholders will continue towards the end of the season

Shootouts & Blowouts or Low-scores & Cliffhangers? The only way to win games of football is to finish the game with a higher score than the opposition. AFL legend Malcolm Blight’s coaching philosophy centered around “it doesn’t matter what the opposition kick, we’ll just kick a bigger score” In William Buck Premier as we approach the halfway mark of the 2022 season, scoring overall is down. But, the evenness and closeness of the games are significantly up! So, what do we prefer? The high-scoring shootouts and blowouts? Or the low-scoring closer affairs? Before delving into what’s on offer this weekend, the VAFA’s Champion Data computer style numbers have returned the following on scoring in recent years. Years

Guy Martyn’s men this year, again though, in final quarters they stormed home for their fourth consecutive victory.
While scoring has gone down over 4-goals per game on average since our most recent completed season (2019). The evenness of the competition has gone up.
This weekend, he heads to the ground he already knows all-toowell and the club he most recently was in charge of before moving over to Uni Blues.
Nearly double the games completed after 8 rounds this season have gone down to the wire in comparison to 2019. Are coaches more defensively minded? Has Melbourne’s inclement weather created “slower tracks”? Or are we seeing the evenness of the competition playing into our hands for closer finishes?
After conceding 8 final quarter goals to Old Scotch in Round 1, the defence of the Blues have conceded only 9 more goals since. St Kevin’s, in the past fortnight, both Xav’s and Brighton have broken through their defensive press and kicked a winning score. Both times, away from T H King.
This weekend there’s a lot of excitement heading to Elsternwick Park as Old Brighton make the trek to the home of VAFA football to tackle Old Melburnians. The OM’s are having their best start to a season in a very long time. A win for them over the Tonners has them equal first at the halfway point of the season.
The Skobbas, along with OM’s are another side to have kicked 100+ points twice this year, they are capable of kicking a big score. Paddy Kerr is chasing the tail of Sam Grimley on the sharpshooters leaderboard. As much as I want to wish this to be a free-flowing contest of end to end footy, much like the 2019 Grand Final, scoring numbers suggest the clamps will come on early and contested footy will be the order of the day.
From a scoring perspective, Satts’ men have rectified slow starts in recent weeks outscoring opponents by 49 points in their last three opening quarters. They are one of only two sides to have kicked 100+ points in a game twice this year including last Friday night’s hammering of Collegians. The most impressive piece of artillery OM’s have is the even spread of goalkickers, there’s no one focal point. (9 goalkickers in Round 7, 8 goalkickers in Round 8). The Brighton defence has its work cut out for them.
Prediction: Cliffhanger Old Xaverians have a real opportunity to stuff the scoresheet against Old Trinity when they welcome them to Toorak Park. Xavier Richards is likely to return to the line-up, he’s played twice this year with returns of 4 goals and 5 goals in both outings, he thrives at home.
The Tonners themselves are ranked #2 for overall scoring, the additional strings to their bow are the goals that come from the midfield brigade. Harry Hill, Tom Fisher, Max Kennedy. The x-factors in Anthony Zimmerman. It’s going to be a tantalizing match-up with more than just four points on the line.
James Byrnes’ sides get off to high-flying starts (7-1 in first quarters) but then fall away in the second term, leaving the door slightly ajar. While Xav’s are ranked #9 for second quarters (1-7), Old Trinity are ranked #10 (0-8).
Prediction: Cliffhanger
The T’s will call on the footy Gods, as well as Alex Emery, Sam Mason, George Belcher and the Scott boys to assist them in their cause.
Last weekend Uni Blues claimed their biggest win of the season pushing Old Xaverians out of the top 4 to put themselves in. They also walked away with their biggest winning margin of the year. Close, tight games have been a regular occurrence for THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Prediction: Blowout 2
ROUND 8 RESULTS

Mark Gnatt’s team has been the surprise packet from the opening half of 2022. A win against Caulfield this weekend has them going into the Queen’s Birthday bye with a 5-4 record that he most likely would’ve taken had he been asked in the pre-season. The Fields however, they’re coming to Camberwell Sports Park with a full head of steam. Declain Reilly is back, Dane Crognale is playing his best footy since joining the club, Jack Ellwood is the competition’s latest rising star nominee and you can never discount Julian Dobosz, Jack Wallace and Will Edwards. From a scoring point of view, the Cardinals have a turn of foot that is scary. Twice this year they’ve put the foot on the accelerator and kicked 8 goals in a quarter. If Gnatt gives them the signal this weekend to go and repay the favour to the Fields from the 2019 B-Grade Grand Final, then expect it to be raining goals out at Camberwell. Prediction: Shootout There’s more than just pride on the line when St Bernard’s welcomes Collegians to the snakepit. The bottom placed Snowdogs are rebuilding the club from the bottom up with youthful exuberance leading the way. They’ve been in games across the past fortnight but young legs have faded away. Collegians started last Friday night in a blaze of glory with the opening goal, but that was the only highlight they can hold their hat on. Jared Rivers will be hoping to add some tall timber to his lineup this week, with Oli Jackson shoulder all of the ruck duties. There are still two key pillars in the Lions armory, Dave Mirra and Ed Greene. They’ve kicked 33 goals between them making the dynamic duo a dangerous prospect up forward. Prediction: Low-scores Of course, it is Australian rules football, and the unpredictable nature of the game lends itself to the odd blowout, and anything happening on any given day. The one thing that will never change in our great game, you will always win, if you kick a higher score than the opposition.

Big weekend for the sharpshooters It’s games within games in Premier B. Big bags of beautiful goals was the order of the day in front of the big sticks, with the power forwards taking a stranglehold on the opposition defence across the weekend.
Joel Cusack is running with the Peter Hudson theory at the moment, four goals in Round 6, five goals in Round 7 and six goals in Round 8. Can we pencil him in for seven goals in Round 9 this weekend? Fans of the Sharks sure hope so. He had support from Connor Murphy (3) and was named alongside Cusack in the best.
While the gap at the very top continues to stretch and pull away, the jostling and manoeuvring for spots in the chasing pack is the most fascinating watch. Approaching the halfway mark of the season this weekend, it’s all likely to change again.
Nicholas Ebinger is having a season to remember for the CY’s, another four goal haul up forward takes his season tally to 16. While Thomas Johnston (2) and Jack Noonan (2) also found their way to goal.
University Blacks and Old Carey met at the Carey Sports Complex for a game that transcended football as former player of both clubs Tyrone Bean and Uncle Ringo Terrick, Wurundjeri Elder, conducted a smoking ceremony prior to the first bounce as part of Indigenous Round.
Beaumaris head home to Shark Park this weekend to face St Bede’s who’ve had a rough run of late, while for Williamstown it’s a date with the best, the head to University Oval to face Uni Blacks. St Bede’s Mentone Tigers have now lost three consecutive games after a terrific win against Old Haileybury in Round 5. Ajax on the other hand, have responded emphatically after losing to Beaumaris last week to push themselves into the top 4. With scores level at quarter time, it was the Jackers who pushed ahead at half-time with a 2-goal buffer. The margin remained steady for the second half as Ajax left Brindisi St with a 16 point win.
On the field, the game played out as expected with the ladder leaders asserting early dominance over the bottom placed Panthers. Lachie Huntington had a day out in front of the goals kicking eight majors on their way to a 106 point victory. James Sansom was named the best player on the ground for Uni. Old Carey are battling to keep opposition sides under 100 points per game, with six of their 8 losses seeing them concede triple figures. They have the bye this weekend and will be aiming for the back half of the season, to be an improvement on the front half.
Ajax were led by Bren Krongold, Jordan Cohen and Adam Kaplan with the latter featuring regularly in the club’s best players. Braydon O’Toole is averaging three goals a game for the Tigers, after another four goals put his season tally at 21.
Second placed Beaumaris headed out to Fearon Reserve and set the tone early against Williamstown CYMS with a 6.6.42 to 3.0.18 opening quarter scoreline. From there, they won every quarter and extended their lead at each break. The final margin of 65 points could’ve been much greater had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
The next challenger heading to Gary Smorgon Oval is Old Haileybury, despite the significant percentage discrepancy (Ajax: 87.96 v Old Haileybury 147.44%), a win to the home side will see them leapfrog the highly fancied pre-season contenders in third spot on the table.

Old Haileybury fought off the most recent contender in fourth spot, Fitzroy with relative ease. Four goals to one in the opening term set up the day, and a 39 point lead at half-time was extended to 66 at three quarter time, before the Roys put some pride back in the jumper winning the final term, but it mattered little with the final margin being 56 points. Castan Racunica (2021 Rising Star nominee) was the pick of the goal kickers with a bag of eight, in a best on ground display. Durras Seccull assisted him up forward with three of his own, he moved to third on the sharpshooters list. The Roys fall to fifth on the table. They will welcome a fresh De La Salle to Brunswick St Oval this weekend, a win for them and an Ajax loss pushes them back into the top 4, while a loss sees De La Salle move past them. A classic 8-point game is waiting for both of these proud clubs. ** Our regular Premier B reporter Eliza Wright is recovering from a broken leg and will return next week, all of us at the VAFA wish her well throughout her recovery journey

reply in the third term had appeared to end the match as a contest. UHS-VU had other ideas, kicking four in quick succession in the final stanza, but Ormond finished with two late majors to complete a solid 36-point victory. Blake Picone and Sam Mason kicked three each for the Monders, with Harrison Burt their best. James McGee was best for the Uni with four goals, with the consistent Todd Cracknell also serviceable on the day.
Old Ivanhoe’s season is ticking along just nicely, and although the Preston Bullants kicked the last two goals of the first term to lead at quarter time, the boys from Chelsworth Park were rarely troubled thereafter. The key to the win was a solid defensive display which kept Preston to five goals after quarter time. Ivanhoe took the lead soon after the first break on the back of a three-goal second term from Daniel Stanford and steadily increased their lead to five goals at the last change, whereupon they took complete control in the last twenty minutes to record a ten-goal victory. Luke Scuderi led the scorers’ charts with four, with Ethan Lowe responding with three for the Bullants. Sam Wilcox continued his fine season for Ivanhoe, with the two Howard boys the best for the Bullants.
With the winner of this match set to take second place on the ladder, the stakes were high at Frearson Oval, and it was Monash that came out switched on, stunning Mazenod with a five-goal first quarter burst. The early break turned out to be decisive as defences held sway in the middle quarters, with neither side’s attack able to kick more than three further goals to three-quarter time. The Nodders needed to strike hard and early in the final quarter if they were to make any impression on the 28-point deficit that they faced, but again it was Monash that stood up, kicking three goals to two in the final term to frank their credentials as one of the premiership favourites coming into the half-way mark. Nick Darling and Alex Bennett kicked three each for Monash, with the hard-working Jake Meade their best. Nick Pascuzzi with two was the only multiple goal kicker for Mazenod, with Matt Fewings best afield in their colours.
UHS-VU succeeded in turning the first quarter into an arm wrestle against an Ormond side battling to find their best form in front of the faithful at EE Gunn Reserve. Two goals to one in the opening term represented a success for the University boys, but that sadly was as good as it got. Ormond registered six of the eight second quarter majors as the machine cranked into gear, and another five against only one
Parkdale made it two wins on the bounce with a comfortable victory against the visiting Marcellin. An even first term gave way to a dominant display in the middle quarters as the Vultures stood up to every Marcellin challenge to lead by five goals at the final change. Marcellin did well to hold Parkdale in the last quarter as the dam threatened to break, but were only able to manage two goals of their own as the Vultures cruised to a 34-point triumph. Josh Manning made the most of his opportunities up forward, as did Dylan Williamson as they finished with three goals each for THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Parkdale. Charlie Yee was best on the ground in an even, solid display. Pat Howe with two was Marcellin’s only multiple goal kicker, with Marcel Haj a winner for them. Old Geelong travelled to Keysborough with demolition on their mind, and they delivered in spades as the local fans of the Old Mentonians endured a dirty day that could have been even worse had the Geelong boys kicked straighter. The Panthers went to half time with a meagre four behinds on the board as Old Geelong kicked the only six goals of the first half, and whilst they were finally able to get the scoreboard ticking after the main break, they were unable to stop Old Geelong from doing the same. The OGS, whilst particularly inaccurate in their finishing after half time, kicked five goals in the third term and three in the last to win every quarter on the way to a 65-point win. Liam Higgins and Joe Griffiths kicked three goals apiece for OGS, with Nick Freeman industrious all day. Tom McCarthy played a lone hand in kicking three for the Panthers, with the evergreen Lewis Oliver also handy. Hampton Rovers bye

Ormond and UHS-VU meet again after 54 years 1932, the birth year of the Ormond Amateur Football Club and the University High School Old Boys (now USH-VU). Two proud clubs who these days are in the same section (Premier C) and competing against one another for the first time since 1968.
as Division 1. Ormond came away with the points. UHS first tasted success against the Monders on June 17, 1933. And then again in the return bout overshadowing a dominant season from Ormond that saw them come away with the club’s inaugural Premiership in that season.
Round 8 of this season was the first time both sides had met under the Vultures alignment of UHS-VU. And, while Ormond walked away winners over the weekend by 36 points it was a game that brought back a hint of nostalgia between the sides.
The clubs traded blows across the next three and a half decades with the final meeting (before the weekend) taking place in B-Section on July 20, 1968 (Round 13). Despite the Monders going onto win the Premiership in 1968, UHS have held bragging rights over them for 44 years. That all came to a halt on the weekend as hostilities resumed on the field and Ormond took control at EE Gunn Reserve.
The first official match between Ormond and UHS took place on June 25, 1932 – Round 9, in what is now known

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Sienna Jones (Aquinas) The VAFA congratulates Sienna Jones from Aquinas on her Round 8 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nomination. Sienna kicked 2 goals in Aquinas’ 2 point win over Collegians on the weekend. The win keeps Aquinas in touch with the top four in Premier B Women’s. What the club said: Sienna has enjoyed a fantastic start to her Aquinas career, slotting in seamlessly to the senior team’s forward line. At just 17 years of age she possesses courage beyond her years and is regularly crashing packs and making her presence felt. Her goal sense is exceptional and she has been hitting the scoreboard regularly, she’s also proved herself a more than handy defensive forward when called upon to fill that role. Her gutsy mark running back with the flight before finishing with a long range goal on the run in the game at J.W. Manson Reserve on the weekend was testament to her talent. Sienna is a hard worker, rarely missing a training session and all of us at The Bloods are so proud to see her efforts rewarded
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Jack Ellwood (Caulfield Grammarians) The VAFA congratulates Caulfield Grammarian’s Jack Ellwood on his Round 8 Rising Star nomination. Jack was instrumental in the Fields 34 point win over St Bernard’s to push themselves out of the bottom two. Ellwood kicked 3 goals in a best on ground display for the home side. What the club said: Jack is a passionate Grammarian who has followed up his JA Wilson Medal (U/19’s B&F Winner) in 2021 with a huge preseason and a sensational start to the 2022 season. He is an incredibly driven young man, who has worked incredibly hard in preparing himself for senior football and it has been fantastic to see this dedication pay off. His energy on field has been contagious and his work rate in the forward half has been a benchmark for our senior side. Everyone at Caulfield Grammarians is thrilled for Jack to receive this nomination and we are just as excited to see him develop further at the Fields. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The power-hitters look to assert themselves whilst surprise packages still arise It was an interesting weekend as our top 4 contenders looked to put a stamp of authority on their 2022 campaigns. A round combined with the closest of margins, mixed with a bag of goals that catapulted the leading goal scorer into a league of his own. It was a hot start for the Wellers in the throwdown between the struggling Old Camberwell against Peninsula Old Boys. Their past few weeks have indicated that getting behind the scoreboard from the jump isn’t the way to win football games, and kicking things off with a commanding first quarter put them in a position to run away eventual 114 point winners from the Pirates.
majors to his tally. He led his side to a mighty victory. Oakleigh were the dark horses of the competition coming into the season, and they’re beginning to show they are more than just a one trick pony, they are a force to be reckoned with.
Key performances from Sam Murphy and Lachie Powell in front of goal gave this team much needed confidence and a percentage boost heading through the middle part of the season.
Glen Eira took on the task of dismantling a rough and tough side in Therry Penola who have proved they are far better than their lowly spot on the table suggests. The game became an absolute corker, with only a matter of points separating the teams coming into the final quarter.
The most prolific goal kicker in the VAFA is a member of the Krushers line-up. Oakleigh faced off against the tough and tenacious St Marys Salesian. Coming off the past two weeks of five goals and a 9-goal haul, it’s hard to see the momentum of Cloke and Oakleigh slowing down any time soon, Cloke added another seven
With the theme of gut running and defensive pressure becoming crucial in the closing stages, the Gryphons were able to hold onto the win and collect a really important 4 points at this stage of the season. For Therry Penola, this is a great confidence boost and a much needed step forward in terms of who they can not only compete against, but even defeat. In terms of close finishes, it doesn’t get any closer than the game out at PEGS Oval between the ladder leaders PEGS who had to stave off the most gallant of performances from Prahran Assumption. The game wouldn’t stretch further apart than a few majors as the boys from Airport West were put to the test.

An 11-point three quarter time lead disappeared quickly in the final term, and it took until the final kick of the day for PEGS to win after the siren. This was truly the highlight of the round and shows that PrahranAssumption are a team that if you get caught sleeping you may never wake up, capable and ready to steal the 4 points at any given time. Kew and Whitefriars played off in a contest that was closer than I anticipated, with a second half display of dominance the reason for the victory in the end. Whitefriars are a side that can compete but for whatever reason in 2022 haven’t been able to put it together consistently. The first half saw them put it to the men from the East as they sat 1-point behind leading into the half. After some words of inspiration in the half-time break it awoke the sleeping giant in Kew and they were able to run away with the 4 points and win by 3 majors, a massive victory in the context of their season and puts them well within that top 4.

Ivanhoe AFC for Top 2. Lock it in Eddie. Round 8 in Division 2 gave us a certainty. Ivanhoe AFC will play in the finals. They will finish in the top 2 which leaves the battle for the other double placed getter out of Brunswick and MHSOB.
Alexander Ouzas was the pick of the bunch amongst the best on ground performers, as Anthony Lucisano is stringing together a season to remember, with 20 goals to his name and regular appearances in the Ants best players.
The best part about locking in a certainty when it comes to football, is how rarely the certainties come to fruition, and this far out too. You only need to look to the second half at the MCG on Saturday afternoon to know nothing is ever 100% certain.
Old Parade are outside the top 4 by percentage only, they’ll see round nine against Yarra Old Grammarians as an opportunity to build on that and keep West Brunswick and Aquinas on their toes.
The reason for such a bold call is the way Ivanhoe AFC has gone about their business in recent weeks. They’ve been challenged within games and responded emphatically. Not only are they running away from the top sides, they’re not letting up when they tackle the bottom sides.
Speaking of Aquinas, they were pushed well into the last term against the Bushrangers and walked away with an 11 point win. The 25 point half-time margin was sliced to under a goal at the final change as an intense last quarter followed. Michael Scott (6) put in his strongest performance in front of goal for Yarra but it wasn’t enough as they fell short in their bid to snatch victory. Liam Marshall (4) also fought valiantly for the afternoon. They will take some confidence from keeping a contender to just five goals in the second half.
A 145 point win over Manningham Cobras on Saturday underlined that, 39 scoring shots. 15 goals in the first half, 11 goals in the second. Ash Close returned to the field kicking seven majors, alongside him Vivian BlackmoreMoore rammed home seven too. Aaron Marks was named the best player on the ground.
On the winning side of the coin, Billy O’Loughlin (4), Ash Naulty (3), and Josh Robertson (3) all had a hand in the win as Matt Allwood ran amok to be awarded best on ground honours. In their five wins this year, they’ve led at half-time of each game. This weekend when they tackle the dominant force of Brunswick, they’ll be looking for that trend to continue.
Greater challengers will come in the back half of the season, and you may even see on the team sheet more of S.Selwood and a former St Bernard’s power forward Chad Jones, which makes their line up even more dangerous. The Ants make the trek to Ivanhoe Park this Saturday with one thing in mind: Spoil the Hoers run, upset on the cards. For Bulleen Templestowe they would have gone into three quarter time against Old Parade at Garvey Oval, full of confidence, breathing fire and ready to run out the last 30 minutes. After fighting back from a 14 point deficit at quarter time, they held onto a 16 point lead at the final change.
After a classic after-the-siren win last weekend, the momentum Brunswick rolled into Saturday with, kept on going. With a thumping 47-point win over MHSOB. A tight tussle in the opening term saw Brunswick kick the only goal. The second term saw both sides trade four goals each. It was after half-time that the green, purple and white brigade broke the back of the Unicorns with nine goals to two. Taking them out of top spot, and placing them in third.
The Green Army after some words of inspiration from the coaching staff had other ideas as they kept the Ants goalless and kicked four of their own to finish the stronger of the sides and claim victory. Anthony Cafari (4) and Daniel Comande (3) were pivotal in attack for the Paradians while at the other end Jack Cowell (4) and Anthony Lucisano (3) provided headaches.

Wijayakumara was held goalless for the first time since Round 10, 2021 which no doubt went a long way to assisting Brunswick in their efforts. Despite the opening line at the top of the recap, do not dismiss the Unicorns by any stretch. You’re a braver person than some if you are, they’ve shown on their day they’re one of the most formidable outfits in Division 2 and to West Brunswick, who face them this coming weekend, we say: good luck. The Magpies responded emphatically to the heartbreak of round 7 with a comfortable 50 point win over the hapless Power House. The margin could have been much greater had the accuracy in front of goal gone in their favour. Luke Buckler (4) and Tommy Cottrell (4) led the way for the black and white, while Michael Turnbull is making a habit out of being in the best three players on the ground for his side in recent weeks. Jeremy Hill (2) continues to be a shining light in an otherwise bleak start to the season for Power House, along with Ben Circosta. The two can hold their head high and when the tide turns in their favour, they’ll be very hard men to stop. And maybe, just maybe, that tide has the chance to turn this weekend when they face Manningham Cobras. In a game where there’s more than just pride on the line.

Wickers unbeaten still as D3 Men’s Ladder tightens South Melbourne Districts were a class above in a dour day for Emmaus St Leo’s, who went down by 15 points at Lindsay Hassett Oval. It was arm wrestle for the better part of the day, with both teams evenly matched. The Animals took the lead into the first and second breaks, before the Bloods put their foot down for the last half to get the four points. Matt Hill (3) stood tall for Emmaus St Leo’s in front of goal, with Jonathan Greensides, Dan Hill, Nathan Bird, and Sam Barrah rounding out the goalkickers, as Hugh Schaeche took top honours. For the home side, Oliver Dufficy (3) extended his lead on the divisional goalkicking tally and Jamie Brooker also kicked three.
Division 3 Men’s is tightening up, and it couldn’t be more exciting for everyone involved. Whatever was in the water in Division 4 Men’s last year, it might be worth a few of the other teams doing some quick research, with both teams who were promoted this year to Division 3 on the fast track to immediate finals berths. Elsternwick are still yet to drop a game eight rounds into the season, while South Melbourne Districts remain in the top two after just one loss to the aforementioned Wickers. It continues to all come up roses for Elsternwick, whose unbeaten streak remains after taking down Hawthorn and coming away 42-point winners at Holmes Todd Oval. Consistent scoring over the four quarters kept the Wickers in front all day, but their seven-goal first term well and truly set the stage. With 30 points between the teams going into the main break, it was a tough ask for the Hawks, who appeared to be on the back foot for the better part of the day. Not even a bag from William Meehan (5), or a best-on performance from Hadrian Prest could help. For the winning side, Matt Ball (6) continued his form in front of goal to take top honours as best-on, while Julian Yeatman (4) and David Convery (2) rode shotgun in the forward line.
Life continues for the winless Westbourne Grammarians despite suffering another loss, this time at the hands of North Brunswick, who took to Westbourne Grammar and left 72-point winners. It was a tight tussle in the first half, with the Bulls only taking a 10-point lead into the main break, before they went full throttle, denying the Warriors any majors while kicking five of their own. Seven goals in the final term allowed North Brunswick to run over the top and get their third win of the season. The Bulls ended up with ten individual goalkickers, with Andrew Ramzy (3), Kali Dawborn (2), Aydan Marriner (2), and Jake Horwood (2) kicked multiples, while Marcus Watt (1) was named best-on. For the home side, Michael Szulc kicked two, and Jackson Brook topped the best players list.
Wayward kicking at Kevin Bartlett Reserve has seen Parkside run away 46-point winners against Richmond Central. It was a scrap from the beginning, but a 6.4 second quarter meant the Red Devils took a lead of 46 points into the main break, and the Snakes’ inability to get goals on the board continued into the second half. Matthew Holden, Shane Doherty, and Lewis Balcombe all kicked three goals each for the away side, while Jack Hamilton (1) topped the best players list. For Richmond Central, Dane Roy (3) and Jack Bilson (3) continued to perform for their side, and Dylan Curnow was best-on. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Parkside are one win outside the four, and will look to close the gap when they welcome South Melbourne Districts to Pitcher Park. It’s been an up and down year for the Red Devils and they’ll look to take a scalp in the middle part of the season.

Allard Park is the destination for an out-of-sorts Hawthorn team, who take on North Brunswick. The Bulls are coming into the game off the back of a win and will look to continue that form. Elsternwick face their last challenge of the division, heading to Bennettswood Reserve to take on an Emmaus St Leo’s side keen on redemption after a less-than-ideal round eight. The Wickers have had the best start to both Division 3 Men’s and the year, and will look to go 8-0. It’s a trek across the city for Canterbury, who return from their bye and head to Westbourne Grammar to take on the struggling Westbourne Grammarians. The Warriors are yet to get a win on the board but face an exciting Cobras team sitting third on the ladder. Richmond Central are the last of the Division 3 Men’s teams to have their bye, and go into it just in reach of the top four, sixth only on percentage.

St John’s takes their seat at the table as Swinburne survives another early scare The great weather served up great football over the weekend that included plenty of high-scoring games. The round included a 15 goal haul, a new contender emerged, a scare to one of the division’s top sides and a night game.
Swinburne and Eley Park were coming into their clash following big losses and in need of a win to get back on track. Eley Park got off to the better start as they went into the first break with a 2-goal lead at quarter time. The Razorbacks would then have the better second quarter however would still trail at the major break by 7 points.
What was tipped by many to be the match of the round, Masala hosted St Johns in another edition of the Dandenong Derby and the first edition of the Gary Williams Cup who was an incredible and key contributor to both clubs over the last decade.
The game was anyones for the taking and in the third term the Razorbacks seized control as they won the quarter taking a 12-point lead into the final change. The Razorbacks continued their control over the Sharks in the fourth as they kicked the first 4 goals of the quarter to run out winners by 26 points.
The game started off with the JOCs taking a 23-point lead into the first break. The second quarter saw St Johns extend their lead out to 53 points. The Tigers needed a spark coming into the third and they kept it competitive to begin with however, the JOCs were too strong and navigated their lead out to 79 points.
Although a comfortable win in the end, the first three quarters showed a fierce Eley Park side bring the fight to Swinburne. The way in which the Razorbacks responded showed why they are a top contender in 2022.
The fourth quarter saw JOCs forward Rohan Scott put on a clinic kicking a bag of 15 goals as they were able to extend their winning record as they ran out winners by 92 points.
Goalkickers for the Razorbacks included Trent Ryan (5), Luke Mcmanus (4), Lachlan Randello (2) and Sam Hodges (2). The main target up forward for the Sharks was Ben Field with 4 goals, his biggest haul of the season. Swinburne’s best included Jen Toner, Lachlan Randello and Zachary Lassey. Eley Park’s best included Shannon Blewitt, Tyler Fent and Jarrod Newton.
Other multiple goal scorers for the JOCs include Michael Horton (3) and Steven Sullivan (2). For Masala, key target Declan Fowler had a good day in front of goals kicking 5. The best on ground for the JOCs was the previously mentioned Rohan Scott whilst others in the best include Ethan Hope and Corey Ely. The best players for Masala, featured defenders Jeremy Bondoux and Jake Dunkley, first-time captain Tom Williamson and second-year midfielder Cam Young.
Swinburne will now have their first bye of the season before they regain some key players and face off against St Johns in round 10. Eley Park will look to bring the same fight in round 9 as they face Masala at home.
Masala will look to rebound as they face an Eley Park side they defeated not long ago, whilst St John’s look to extend the gap at the top as they face Albert Park.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Round 8 saw the first night game of the season as Albert Park hosted Box Hill North in a high scoring clash. Both teams started strongly with a combined 10 goals but it was the Falcons who held a 14-point lead at the first break.

MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Tessa Vandergriff (Ivanhoe AFC)
50
Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates dedicated clubwoman and foundation women’s team member Tessa Vandergriff on her 50th game in Round 7. Tessa has been a keen learner of the game since she first pulled on the boots for the Ivies in 2017. She’s developed into a smart and versatile player and continues to strive for personal improvement. Tessa mainly plays in defence, reading opposition attacking moves and shutting them down with reliable hands and rebounding with clean and accurate passes. She has also had active roles on committee in sponsorship and recruitment, sharing the best clubman award in 2018 and winning it again last year. She is only the third Ivies player to clock up 50 games this season. Keep on shining number 9!
Mandy Naylor (Hampton Rovers)
50
A significant milestone last Saturday with Mandy Naylor becoming the first Hampton Rovers women’s player to play 50 VAFA games for the club. From one of sports trainers to a foundation player in the inaugural 2017 season, Mandy is co-captain of the team this year and an all-round great club person. The Rovers defeated Albert Park to remain undefeated. Congratulations Mandy!
Tim Constantinou (Ivanhoe AFC)
50
Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates our very own ‘energiser man’ Tim Constantinou on playing his 50th game in Round 8 (May 30). Tim is a very fit, composed and speedy defender with an assassin’s smile who returned to the club where he played his juniors in 2018. He quickly became an important presence playing off halfback, bringing the same great energy he takes to training and social events. Tim’s ability to take on the opposition is exciting to watch as he turns defence into attack, setting up scoring opportunities. Tim also sports the best man bun at the club and literally let his hair down for a best-on performance in the reserves on Saturday. Love your work Tim, keep on motoring!
James French (Glen Eira)
50
Congratulations to James French on achieving the 50 game milestone. Frenchy has been a fixture of our Old McKinnon/Glen Eira U19s team before finally graduating this year to Senior footy. We look forward to the athletic ruckman playing many more games for the Gryphons in the future.
Charlie Shaw (Old Scotch)
50
Congratulations to Charlie Shaw on reaching 50 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Charlie joined the club from Scotch College in 2018, spending his first year in the Men’s under 19s, playing in the under 19 Premier Grand Final team. He moved into the senior ranks in 2019, where he has played at all levels, including the Men’s 1st XVIII. We wish Shawrie all the best on reaching this milestone.

James Tarrant (Old Scotch)
50
Congratulations to James Tarrant on reaching 50 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. James joined the club from Scotch College in 2018, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s, playing in the 2019 under 19 Premier Premiership team. He moved briefly into the senior ranks in 2019, where he has played since at Men’s 1st and 2nd XVIII level. We wish Tazz all the best on reaching this milestone.
Robert Rae (MHSOB)
100
Congratulations to Robert Rae on reaching the 100 game milestone for the MHSOBFC. A Melbourne High School graduate from the Class of 2014, Rob began his career with the Unicorns playing in the U/19s in 2015. A gun wingman, Rob became known for his great tank and smooth ball-use. His talent and leadership were quickly recognised: he was picked for his senior debut in 2016, and he was made captain of the U/19s and Dev Squad teams for several seasons. Since then, Rob’s career has continued to grow as an important part of the Unicorn’s midfield mix in the senior squad. He is much loved throughout the Corns community, and deserves every success that comes his way on the footy field. We all wish Robbie a massive congratulations on this great achievement and look forward to many more great games from him.

Old Xaverians came close, but Melbourne Uni hold on to claim top 4 spot Kew were looking for another big win against West Brunswick to close the gap on first place. It was an uncharacteristically slow start for Kew early on with West Brunswick slowing down the run style of play that we have been seeing from Kew. The defensive play was all that West Brunswick could manage though, with them struggling to hit the scoreboard at all. Despite all the effort from West Brunswick, Kew were able to keep the ball outside of their inside 50. Kew bounced back despite the slow start but were unable to convert and get a major. Reward for effort came eventually for Kew with their first goal coming before halftime.
West Brunswick to just 2 points for the match. The win keeps Kew in touch with top place St Kevins, but the gap between the two has now gotten much farther. Caulfield Grammarians have a tight grip on third position and they were looking to defend that position when they came up against Marcellin. Caulfield showed early on why they are competing in the top part of the ladder. They were commanding most of the ball and keeping Marcellin on the backfoot. Marcellin were productive in defense and were holding on strong. In the third quarter they held Caulfield to just two points and were rewarded for their hard work and persistence scoring in the dying seconds of the third quarter.
The scrappy contest continued throughout the rest of the game as West Brunswick continued to thwart the running game of Kew. Kew were able to keep holding on defensively and staved off any attack that West Brunswick attempted. Although goals were few and far between in this game, Kew managed two goals which was enough to get the win. Their impressive defensive play held
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
Caulfield continued to show their best football in the final, limiting all opportunities for Marcellin. To seal the victory Caulfield kicked two goals to win comfortably by 34 points. With accuracy being the only thing stopping the margin from being larger.

With fourth spot on the line Melbourne Uni had everything to play for when they faced off against Old Xaverians. Old Xaverians showed Melbourne Uni early that they were up for the challenge, with both teams fighting it out from the midfield. Old Xavs were all over the ball when it spilled onto the ground and were holding off the strong offense from Melbourne Uni. As the game continued it was Old Xavs who were keeping up the pace and keeping the ball out of Melbourne Uni’s hands.

Melbourne Uni were commanding after half time taking control of the contests but it was Old Xavs who were able to get the ball inside 50. The backline of Melbourne Uni was too strong and held off the strong attack from Old Xavs so they were unable to take advantage of their opportunities in front of goals. As the final quarter went on, Old Xavs closed the gap on Melbourne Uni, they got close with a few minutes to go but Melbourne Uni held on to get the win and grab on to fourth spot on the ladder.

2022 PREMIER RESERVE WOMEN’S Caulfield Grammarians Marcellin
St Marys and St Kevins battled it out again with St Kevins coming out on the attack early in the game. All of the pressure was on St Marys to respond and it didn’t take long before St Kevins was on the board. St Kevins continued to show their strength throughout the match with their offense able to find holes within the St Marys defence. Inaccuracy in front of goals was the only area that was letting St Kevins down.
