SEASON 2023 - June 17
As the VAFA community returns from a well earned break over the King’s Birthday weekend, it gave me time to reflect back and review our progress against our Strategic Plan so far this year.
The four-year Plan for 2023-2026, released in December 2022, was the result of extensive engagement and feedback with responses from over 96% of Clubs. This provided a very clear picture of what our Club members required, and we established our Plan, structure and resources accordingly. Most importantly, it established the values of Respect, Inclusive, Integrity and Community, for our VAFA Community to live by.
We established a fourth pillar of operations ‘Community’ with its own Sub Committee chaired by Tim Habel, Director Sarah Delbosc, independent member Waki Wohoro, and managed by Clubs & Community Manager Sean Walker and now supported by Club Development Coordinator, Casey Crapper. This team has been working hard in establishing partnerships and bringing the necessary service providers in to support our Clubs.
This has been particularly evident in some critical need areas such as:
Mental Health
Delivered thirteen ‘Tackle Your Feelings’ workshops to VAFA clubs so far in 2023, with a further 7 clubs booked in for 2023.
Provided Mental Health First Aid training to 20 club stakeholders;
Focusing a themed Round (June 24th) on ‘Tackle Your Feelings’ to promote the conversations around mental health within our Clubs.
Currently working on a pilot project to provide all Clubs with access to a welfare service.
Volunteers
Provided all clubs with access to Sports Community’s Club Resources titled ‘Club Spot’, providing webinars, templates, job descriptions and many other documents to support committees and volunteers; Introduced more opportunities for recognition through Volunteer of the Month and ‘Carruthers Executive’ Coach of the Month Awards; Provided First Aid training to 20 club stakeholders; Launched the ‘VAFA Community Hub’ on the VAFA Website to keep everyone abreast of Community matters and access to further resources.
Facilities
Supported clubs with Grant submissions predominantly through AFL Victoria’s Strategic Community Investment Fund (SCIF) and Sport & Recreation Victoria (SRV) Sporting Club Grants Program. Submissions currently sit at $250k+ across the VAFA association, and $170k successful to date, with many more still pending.
Inclusion
Launched the Breaking Barriers Program in a two year partnership with Centre for Multicultural Sport & Proud 2 Play, delivering best practice inclusion education for all VAFA stakeholders.
Jason ReddickCEO
Connected clubs to Relationship Australia ‘Victoria’s Healthy Club, Healthy Relationship’ program to support gender equity in VAFA clubs.
Introduced the VAFA Inclusion Advisory group with six VAFA club representatives, who will oversee the VAFA inclusion strategy and inclusive communication standards.
Development of our Club people
Currently rolling out the VAFA Coach Developer Program, Women’s Coaching Academy and VAFA Coaching Conference which will take place on 12th July;
Connected clubs with U19’s team to ‘Sport And Life Training (SALT)’ leadership training workshops for players, through partnership with Love the Game.
Community
We have continued our promotion of Women’s health through our partnership with Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), raising awareness and promoting fundraising through our themed round over the Mother’s Day weekend (May 12-14) . Promoting road safety messaging for all drivers through our partnership with Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) and AFL Victoria via a ‘Road Safety’ themed round on weekend of July 22-23.
In addition to the work from our Community team, our VAFA Football department lead by GM Football Matt Collister, and supported by Football Operations staff Will Thomas and Gabriella Martin, have delivered some important programs in the following areas.
Integrity
VAFA have this year taken on board the task of establishing the points position for each of our players in the competition. Once Clubs provide all appropriate information pre-season, this eliminates the volunteer burden and risk of error from Clubs completing the player point status on the match day team sheets.
Concussion
VAFA has partnered with Monash University and AFL Vic in a pilot programme to provide all Club medical staff with a free and direct match day hotline to call in the case of a concussion incident, should they need professional medical advice on how to treat the player.
The feedback from many of the participants who have been involved in each of the above programmes has been overwhelmingly positive.
We will continue to invest in resources and programmes to support all our VAFA Clubs to ensure they continue to feel supported through these challenging times, so all VAFA people can continue to enjoy our most proud and respected competition.

Jet Set, Jet Ready, and (if you’re staying) GO!
A week off to take one collective deep breath before we hit go on the next block of season 2023.
The final siren of round 8, for a handful of players signalled the countdown to flights out of Melbourne. Others will start to check into the airport in the coming days, expected to return tanned, freshed, rejuvenated and likely playing in the reserves.
Spots in senior sides are hard to come by at the best of times, giving it up at this time of year could be crucial in the run home.
This weekend coming, William Buck Premier features battles that are set to go down to the wire.
In the RSN Xtra Match of the Day, Old Brighton and Old Xaverians will do battle at Brighton Beach Oval.
The Tonners have lost three of their past four matches, and had a fortnight to think about their most recent 27 point loss to Old Melburnians. The red and black mafia arrested the tide of three losses before the bye with a comfortable victory over Old Haileybury.
Marcus Stavrou, Xav’s captain has returned and had an immediate impact in his two matches so far. Could the Old Brighton captain, Harry Hill return from his fractured back injury this weekend and put in a similar performance?
These two sides have a strong rivalry, dating back to 2007 where Old Xaverians claimed the A-Section Premiership over Old Brighton. In more recent years, the Tonners lead the head-to-head battle that includes ending Xav’s 2022 premiership hopes by knocking them out in the first semi-final.
Dan Donati, the coaching master, he’ll know the Xav’s gameplan intimately, they’ve played the same way for 100 years, throughout the time he was dominating and winning premierships in the colours. Has he got the cattle in red and blue to stop them?
Join us at 1:00 PM on Saturday to find out, with incoming AFL CEO Andrew Dillon part of the Grill’d Commentary Team for the day.
The last time St Kevin’s lost three games at home in a row dates back to rounds one, three, and five in 2016. The last time they lost four games in a row was over a decade ago.
Coming into this weekend, the reigning champions are going in as the hunters against the ladder leaders Old Scotch
The Cardinals have used the St Kevin’s blueprint across the last two seasons, it’s all coming together for Mark Gnatt’s troops.
Three weeks in a row they’ve kicked over 100 points. The attacking brand and flair is there for all to see. The defensive side is most pleasing to Gnatt, the #1 ranked side for points against, a mere 57 points per game the opposition are managing to score.
Full credit to the backline - Doug Lawrence, Jordan Clark, Hugo Longbottom, Jack Brown and co.
The midfield run both ways, Aiden Franetic, Andy Jelbart, Ben Hays, Brodie Easton and the forward line is as dangerous as any, James Tarrant, Angus Symons, Henry Brown.
Whilst Old Scotch have ticked off a number of milestones this year, an Australia Cup victory over Old Melburnians, beating the Old Xaverians after five straight losses, a third straight victory over Old Brighton. SKOB has proven to be a thorn in the side.
St Kevin’s have won the last 5 against the Cardinals by an average of 44 points. It’s been over a decade since they’ve tasted success.
Sam Tucker played through the King’s Birthday bye with his debut match for North Melbourne in the VFL, Will Coates missed in Round 8, and expected to face off against Tom Ansell.
It’s a toss of the coin battle at T H King Oval, has the team who’ve led the way with the 18-man press got the ability to squeeze, slow and curtail the buoyant, bubbly Cardinals?
We’ve waited six years for Collegians and University Blacks to face off again. The last fi xture between these two sides dates back to 2017.
There’s been so much change since then, just three players on each side remain in the squads at present - Josh Steadman, Campbell Moorfield and Henry Bennett. At the Lions, Sam Hibbins, Vic Michie and Corey Cassidy.
The Lions were humbled when they headed out to Melbourne Uni Oval three matches ago. Back on track the past two matches since then beating St Kevin’s and Caulfield Grammarians.
Will Pocknee has been the find of the year for Jared Rivers, he came into 2023 with 35 senior games and 15 goals to his name. From seven matches this year, he has kicked multiple goals in every game, 17 for the season and added a different layer to an already dynamic forward line.
There’s only one Campbell Moorfield, but a forward line stacked with talent he’s going to have to try to stop. If Pocknee doesn’t get you, Ed Greene, Alex Lukic and a fit Dave Mirra will.
What he doesn’t have in height, he makes up for in hunger - Will Mayhood is the second of the Lion cubs that Riv has asked plenty of this year, and the bear in the centre square has delivered in spades. He comes up against Josh Steadman this weekend, while he may concede the hitouts, when the ball hits the ground, Mayhood will have the presence of mind to run and spread and push hard forward.
University Blacks have had a solid month of footy, 2-2 in the win-loss columns. Averaging 90.5 points per game. 2023 is a year to find out about themselves, and the club overall. The last month has given Dale Bower plenty of data to work with in the back half of the year.
Paul Satterley is a VAFA favourite, five weeks into the season maybe our great friend was contemplating whether a mid-year flight to Europe for himself was on the cards.
Three weeks on, the wheels are starting to spin in the right direction of Old Melburnians. A tight-contested win against University Blacks, a shootout victory over Old Haileybury and then the best performance of the year over Old Brighton.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S

This weekend they’re off to Glen Huntly Oval against Caulfield Grammarians. The Fields pose a threat at home, but if history and momentum is anything to go by, it’s on the side of Satts’ men.
OM’s have won the last 10 against Caulfield. The last time the Fields beat OM’s was Round 7, 2007. A long time between drinks.
OM’s coming from a long way back, at 0-5. If anyone knows it’s possible, it’s Satts.
His second year coaching De La Salle in 2015, they went from 1-4 after five weeks, to 1-7 at Round 8. The club would go on to finish in fourth spot at the end of the home and away season.
What’s that famous song about ‘a little bit of history repeating’ - Maybe that will be the song they fire up in the rooms, pre-game on Saturday?
Arguably, the most in-form team of the last month is Guy Martyn’s University Blues. Marto won’t mind that we’ve “saved the best until last” leading into this weekend’s match up against Old Haileybury
Without Marty Gleeson, Sam Grimley, Dane Crognale and Jack Stephens, the Blues are firing on all cylinders. They’ve won their last four matches by an average of 31 points.
Scalps against Old Brighton (last year’s Grand Finalists), Collegians (currently second on the ladder, and 2022 preliminary finalists), and most recently St Kevin’s (reigning premiers).
They’re back to the form that saw them bring the 2019 premiership to Melbourne Uni. Former VAFA podcast host Brian Waldron often raises the point about the best side on paper the VAFA has seen.
The last month, Marto has been able to hone in on that paper and have it reflected in full beam on matchday.
Old Haileybury off the bye. This could be a banana-peel game for the Blues. If they walk out to Princes Park expecting a walkover, Daniel Ward’s men will be ready to pounce. Durras Seccull and Corey Rich have combined for 24 goals this year, Sam Loewe is dangerous around goal.
The match up of Lachie Treverton, and Ayce Cordy will be one to watch. When it comes off the hands of the big men, it will be a case of curtailing the influence of Ed Ziebarth, Jeremy Goddard through the midfield that is going to be tough.
There are four matches between this Saturday and the next bye round (Big V representative footy). Clubs will be impacted by injuries, and by travel at this point of the year.
As the jostling for positions heats up, will a club bolt up the ladder? Will we see an unlikely slider?
Either way, I have no doubt all coaches will have their eyes firmly on the arrival gates at Melbourne Airport wishing time to hurry up across the next four weeks.

Thrilling round of upsets sees a ladder shake up
This weekend saw a big round of upsets, with the underdog beating the higher ranked team in three out of four matches, in what is a big shake up before we head into the bye.
Caulfield Grammarians broke a three-match losing streak against Collegians on the weekend in what was an unexpected victory, with a massive 20 point to none, last quarter seeing them run out victorious. It was a slow start to the match for Caulfield, scoring only nine points for the first three quarters, whilst Collegians had dominated for the majority of the game.
Tarryn Hurst scored two goals for Grammarians, whilst Chloe O’Malley and Serena Kuo also scored a goal apiece to be named amongst the best.
Caulfield now have two weeks off before coming up against Collegians again in Round Ten in what will be another big clash, whilst the Purple Army will host Fitzroy after the bye.
Kew sits undefeated on top of the ladder and really proved their premiership credentials on the weekend, knocking off St Kevins in what was a thrilling twopoint victory. SKOB mounted a late resurgence, kicking a goal in the last quarter compared to zero from Kew, in what would’ve sent some scares through the Kew camp.
Luckily enough, Kew always managed to stay on top at the end of every quarter and most importantly at the final change. Bree Doyle was again SKOB’s best on ground for the fourth time this season and has only missed having her name amongst the best once. The same goes for Sarah Betts, who has only missed out on being in the best twice. Amelia Dawborn was Kew’s best, whilst Catia Cococcia, Paige Trajkovski and Lara Stevens all scored goals.
Kew will host Melbourne Uni after the bye, whilst SKOB will travel to McAlister Oval to play West Brunswick.
Old Scotch had a big win over Fitzroy, bouncing back from last weekend’s narrow loss. Scotch was kicking extremely accurately, booting 9.4 for the match, with only one behind in each quarter. Fitzroy tried to mount a surge in the last quarter, kicking their only three goals of the match but unfortunately, it was too little too late.
Jade Wise was the clear best on ground, kicking three goals, whilst Lucy Morley and Georgie Kerr also scored multiple goals. Sunday Brisbane featured in Fitzroy’s best for the third week in a row, also adding a second goal to her name, whilst Lauren Atkinson was the best once again.
In Round 9, Fitzroy have a tough opponent in Collegians, whilst Old Scotch hosts the Coburg Lions.
The third narrow defeat of the round saw Coburg prevail by two points, with a final quarter behind ensuring them the win. A dominant third quarter performance ultimately set them up for the win, scoring 19 points to West Brunswick’s 11. Unfortunately for the Magpies, their inaccuracy in front of goals, scoring eight behinds, cost them the game at the end of the day.

Lauren Collis scored two goals for Coburg, whilst Sheridan Bennett scored her third goal of the season and was named the Lions’ best. For the Magpies, Kristy De Pellegrini, Lucy Parrington and Mia Amon were all goal scorers, with Taylah Watson the best. Despite the loss, West Brunswick are still sitting in fifth position, one win ahead of Coburg in sixth.
West Brunswick and Coburg both have tough matchups and will need to prepare adequately over the bye, playing St Kevins and Old Scotch respectively.

St Bernard’s juggernaut continues to roll on while Williamstown snatch their second win
It was tipped to be a ‘ding-dong’ battle, but the Snowdog’s have blitzed Fitzroy as they emerge as conspicuous premiership favourites and the hunted team in Premier B. On a day where the club celebrated its 60 th anniversary, they were able to leave the field with smiles after overcoming what was thought to be their biggest challenge this season.
St Bernards were out to a quick start in the opening quarter of football with five goals to two as the margin pushed out to 22 points at quarter time over Fitzroy. It was here where they continued to pile on the scoreboard pressure with the Roy’s unable to find any ascendency going forward. 19 scoring shots to seven at half time illustrated the Snowdog’s dominance. However, their inaccuracy in front of the big sticks could have seen the half time margin become more confronting for the Roys.
Joe Agresta was huge for the Snowdog’s with a goal and best on ground performance. The scoring power across the board at Bernards was a feature with 10 individual goal kickers. Leading the charge was Marcus Holland with three majors along with Charlie Vague, Luke Di Lizio, Fergus McNicol and Luca Alessio all kicking two goals.
The 67-point win for St Bernard’s now puts them on top of the ladder and one game clear of Fitzroy. For the Roys, Rhys Seakins battled hard throughout the afternoon being voted their best player with Sean Laidlaw also kicking two.
De La Salle have made it two consecutive wins as they pulled away to win by 18 points against Old Geelong at Waverley Oval. De La Salle shot clear at quarter time with a 28-point lead, but the margin was cut back to 10 points at half time as Old Geelong hit back with five second term goals. The second half of footy was controlled by De La Salle who were able to stifle the attack of Old Geelong and hold them at bay.
Thomas Filipovic was De La Salle’s best with Thomas Lyngberg also booting three goals, along with Josh Cumberlidge and Adrian Indovino who both finished with two goals. As for Old Geelong, they were kept in the contest by Connor Dixon who blasted four majors with Scott Dixon also kicking two majors to mount a challenge.
Williamstown CYMS have recorded their second win of the season with an upset victory over Old Trinity by 31 points. Leading at every change, Williamstown CYMS burst clear before half time in the second quarter extending their lead to 25 points at the main break which put them in the box seat throughout the second half.
Oskar Manton, Will Bokma and William Smyth all finished with three majors and kept busy down forward, while Jai Haines found plenty of the footy and provided quality service with a best on ground performance. For Trinity, they remain with just the three wins to begin the season after dropping down from Premier. Thomas Rowland was strong for the T’s on the weekend with Harry Thompson also chipping in with a sound effort.
The final two games of the round ended with significant wins to both St Bedes/Mentone and Beaumaris. St Bedes/Mentone were able to pile on eight final quarter goals to one which squared the game largely in their favour for a percentage booster over Monash Blues. Brayden O’Toole was the leading goal kicker on the ground with seven majors to advance his season total to 19. Jack Ferraro was also in superb form with a best on ground performance for the Tigers. The Blues were assisted by Sam Simpson who did his best to keep them in the contest with two goals being named as their best player.

Meanwhile, the final game of the round saw Beaumaris produce a blistering 100-point win. They kicked thirteen goals in the opening half of football with eight arriving in the first quarter restricting AJAX to a total score of 39 points. Joel Cusack did a power of work down forward with seven goals earning him a best on ground performance. Jack Nardino was back to his best form with three goals to his name as well as their star ruckman in Callum Heath who also kicked three goals.
With the King’s Birthday this coming weekend all teams will have the chance to rest up and reload for the middle period of the season. At this point of the year, St Bernard’s will well and truly be the hunted team in the competition, but the loss to Fitzroy, while deflating, will only provide them with key learnings as to the standard of football that is required to be competitive with stronger sides recently exposed to Premier football. Although the ladder at this stage is strung out, the battle for fourth spot continues to be an intriguing one with De La Salle, Old Geelong, and St Bedes/Mentone all sitting around a similar mark, and Old Trinity still in touching distance.

Monash occupy top spot as Brunswick best creates success
Muddy grounds and the winter chill set the scene for an eventful day filled with astonishing marks, hardhitting tackles, and jaw-dropping goals, in round 8 of Premier B Women’s.
Heading to the den of the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers was Mazenod, after losses for both teams in round 7. With some great defensive skills from both teams in the first quarter, it wasn’t until the second period that points were scored by the Tigers. Mazenod tried their best to catch up, specifically in the third quarter scoring their first and only goal, but unfortunately on this occasion were unsuccessful, with a 16-pointmargin between the final scores.
Trying her best to withhold the power of the SBMT, Charlotte Skinner scored Mazenod’s only goal as well as working alongside Emily Boatman who was deemed best on field for her team. With a home game in round nine up against the competitive Cobras, Mazenod is left to question whether they can lift their game.
This week’s goal kicking superstars for SBMT, Courtney Ward and Alanah Strode will head North Brunswick in round 9, alongside best on field Olivia Steinfort, hopefully creating more success with their team.
The Old Yarra Cobras rose to the occasion once again, against Aquinas, with a 30-point-margin between the final scores.
Although the strength of the Cobras was too strong, Cadhla Schmidli and Sophie Pattenson tried their best to shorten the margin.
The Cobras secret weapon Illiana Zarfiriou scored yet another goal for her team this week, as well as Lou Podmore, Ellen Buckley, Belinda Wreidt and Belinda Harris. Hilary Donelan claimed best-on-field.
The Cobras will be up against the mighty Mazenod ladies in round nine and Aquinas will play a home game against the ladies from Brunswick.
It was an unfortunate game for North Brunswick who were unable to make their mark against the Monash Blues, who had the game in the bag from the very first quarter.
A total of 11 goals were kicked by the Blues, with Molly McFarlane, Johannah Dallas and Emma Draffin scoring two goals each and Alicia Myers being deemed best-on-field. They will take on Richmond Central this weekend.
Sadly, the season hasn’t been very successful for North Brunswick, who struggled to claim a win over the weekend. Is there victory on the horizon for the ladies from North Brunswick, in their upcoming match against the SBMT, or will the Tigers reign supreme?
When Richmond Central met Brunswick on Saturday, it was the ladies in the purple, white and green who took home the win. In a game that was anyone’s up until the third quarter, it was Brunswick who created the 46-point-margin between the final scores.
Up against the Monash Blues in round 9, viewers will keep their eyes on Richmond’s best player from the previous match, Ebony Hoiberg.
Auggie Ross was a goal-kicking machine for her team, scoring a total of three goals as well as claiming beston-field in Brunswick’s best game of the season so far. Next week, Brunswick head to the home grounds of Aquinas.

Last-minute drama as Camberwell steals victory from Vultures
In a riveting clash that unfolded with breathtaking moments, the game between the Parkdale Vultures and Old Camberwell kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
After five stunning goals from Ryan Macdermid and with just minutes left on the clock, the Parkdale Vultures were within reach of their biggest win of the season against Old Camberwell. Holding a tight 5-point lead, victory seemed imminent. However, in a dramatic turn of events, Camberwell had one final chance to snatch the game from the Vultures.
As the ball went up, 20 meters out from Camberwell’s goal, a whistle blew, signaling a free kick for their very own Riley Verbi who had been held. After already having an outstanding day on the field, Verbi stepped up with remarkable composure and slotted the goal, putting Camberwell ahead by a single point.
With time rapidly running out, the Vultures managed to launch a desperate kick inside their attacking 50. However, their hopes were dashed as Liam Thomas of Camberwell took a crucial intercept mark, sealing the deal for his team and ensuring their escape from defeat.
Parkdale will have two weeks to reflect on the heartwrenching loss as they head into their bye in Round 9. Barely clinging onto their top 4 spot, they will need to regroup and come back stronger. On the other hand, Camberwell solidified their position in the top 4 with the win.
In another pivotal match, the Hampton Rovers secured a much-needed 29-point win against Old Carey to inject new life into their season, as they now sit just 6 points shy of the coveted top 4. Nathan Smith’s five goals for the Rovers contributed significantly to their win.
Old Carey, with a perplexing 2-3-2 record, finds themselves stuck in the middle of the ladder. Both teams will have to turn their fortunes around quickly in the second half of the season to make a serious bid for a higher position.
The undefeated, top-placed PEGS found themselves in control for most of the day against second-last placed Ormond. Despite their control, they only managed a 24-point victory after a monstrous 6-goal final quarter from the underdogs.
Riley Simmons was instrumental for PEGS, contributing four goals to their tally. Ormond, with only one win and a draw to their name, will need to replicate their final quarter performance throughout the remainder of the season if they aim to secure an unlikely spot in the finals.
Old Ivanhoe overcame a 5-point deficit at quarter time to dominate Marcellin, ultimately securing a commanding 70-point victory. Luke Scuderi’s five goals for Ivanhoe played a pivotal role in solidifying their position in the top 4.
Marcellin now finds themselves at the bottom of the ladder and must quickly turn their season around to have any hope of contending for a top 4 finish.
Looking ahead, Round 9 promises to bring back the excitement after a week off due to the King’s Birthday Weekend.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Old Scotch Clean Sweep
Old Scotch will come back from the King’s Birthday bye on top of the world. Round 8 was a memorable one for the Cardinals - not only did the senior men’s side run away from Uni Blacks to remain on top of the William Buck Premier Men’s ladder, the men’s reserves, thirds, and Sharks all claimed victories.
Continuing on the winning ways were the Under 19 Men’s who headed out to St Bernard’s with victory on their minds. On the women’s side of the ledger, in the 2022 Premier B Grand Final rematch, the Scotch Stars produced the same result, beating Fitzroy in both the reserves and seniors.
Seven wins, from Seven matches. Celebratory Scotch anyone?

Celebrate 60 Years
St Bernard’s celebrated their 60th anniversary in front of 300 people at ZINC at Federation Square. The evening, MC’d by VAFA’s own Joe Pignataro paid homage to the first XVIII that took to the field against Old Trinity in 1963 with inaugural club captain Michael Perrett raising a glass.
Capped off with the recognition of the sixth instalment of the club’s Team of the Decade, headlined by the three Caven brothers. Captained by Tom, who was the club captain in 2015 when the Snow Dogs claimed their third A-Section title.

Special tribute to Grace Mills and Steph Augustes for their organisation of the day. Pride Round is the heart of SKOB Saints and it is such a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together as one to express our love, support and celebrate our LGBTIQA+ community. St Kevin’s thanks Kew and the VAFA for their support in making it such a magical day.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Georgie Kerr (Old Scotch)
The VAFA congratulates Old Scotch Star Georgie Kerr who has been nominated as the Round 8 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Georgie is finding her feet at a new club with a strong presence in her first season of senior football. Her first two goals of the year coming last weekend against Fitzroy, helped the stars secure the win!
What the club said:
Old Scotch Stars Coach Dean Anderson believes Georgie Kerr has certainly made a big impact in her first season at Old Scotch Football Club.
“Georgie is a great trainer and has a bubbly personality that has made her a favourite amongst her fellow players and club officials.
Prior to moving back to Melbourne from Queensland, Georgie was playing in the AFL Queensland League and was a part of the Lions Academy.
Georgie’s game on Saturday included two goals with her goal and field kicking a real treat for spectators. Georgie has an obvious love of football and relishes the competition. Congratulations Georgie on your Rising Star nomination for Round 8.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
William Pewtress (Collegians)
The VAFA congratulates William Pewtress from Collegians Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 8. Will produced a standout 3-goal performance on the weekend in their sides dominant win over Caulfield Grammarians.
What the club said:
Collegians Senior Coach Jared Rivers said of Will:
“Will has the ability to go forward and back as you have seen in recent weeks. His ability to win his 1:1 contests is a standout. Once the ball hits the ground his follow up work at ground level is also good.
As a young player to be able to play in multiple positions is a great quality to have, he puts time and effort into his craft which tells me he has wants to improve. Work ethic at a young age like him is a great quality to have. Always the last player off the track and always does extra work to make himself better.”

Kew get revenge over UHS, Pirates stun the Two Blues
Eight rounds of VAFA Football so far, plus winter is here, Kew Back on the winners list after a massive crowd turned out at Victoria Park and Pirates secure the four points in a muchneeded win over Prahran.
Old Peninsula vs Prahran
Well hasn’t this season delivered some crazy games! The pirates really were eager to get this one on the board and bring their season tally to 4-4, slotting into 6th on the ladder. Surprisingly the Pirates jumped out of the starting gates early, piling on nearly eight goals in the first term which set the Pirates up to have a real crack at securing a win. Jake Lovett and Bailey Payze were superb in the opening half with blistering pace and their ability to convert, which helped Old Peninsula with their fast start. For the Two Blues on the other hand, it was not the start they would have liked. Piling on 4.9 at half time, unfortunately set the tone for Prahran’s afternoon. Journeyman James Musster put in the hard yards all game for Prahran, being one of their best, and Matt kicked two goals to give Prahran a chance. But it was the Pirates that really set the foundation of the game in the first term, putting them an arms-length away from the Two Blues all game, that gave them the win.
Kew vs UHS-VU
Before we review this matchup, it is only fitting that we recognise Michael Henderson, a 3x Premiership senior footballer and now a 200-game legend of the Kew Bears. Well done Hendo on a great career to date.
How sweet is revenge... That’s what the Kew Bears would be feeling right now after they had a sell out at Victoria Park for their annual Players Day function and the 2013 premiership reunion. The game started reasonably slowly with both teams slugging it out in heavy conditions where the Bears started with two early goals in the first term through Jeremy Hannon and Lachlan James. The second term saw Kew take a bit of breathing space over their opposition as they piled on five goals, Ted Thornely lit up Victoria Park with a suburb two goals in a minute. Half time saw them take a five-goal lead. UHS then decided to take the game on. Brandon Jackson and Jacob Hunt proved why they are so important to this line-up kicking pivotal goals to keep UHS in the game. The
last quarter saw the Bears run away with the game as Regan Smith put on a show with three goals in the last term to really sink UHS’s chance of winning the game. The Bears ultimately coming away with a seven-goal win, taking them to third position.
Ivanhoe vs Therry Penola
The Lions travelled down to Ivanhoe for their clash against the Magpies at Ivanhoe Park. A win would secure the Lions chances of being in touching distance to finals and a loss would make them slip.
The game started very slowly with only two goals between the two teams at quarter time proving it was a very contested ball in the midfield. Michael Doyle and Daniel Jones provided the backbone for Ivanhoe in the first term, being able to get plenty of the ball. The Lions then launch, kicking the next three goals with Brenton Egglestone being a vital player for the Lions, and giving Darcy Ryan and Kane O’Halloran first looks inside fifty to kick ahead. This lead could have been much worse, but the Lions were inaccurate, kicking 14 behinds. Despite the strong fight from Ivanhoe, the game petered out to a four-goal victory to the Lions, whose season is left at 4-4 whilst magpies are 1-7.
Glen Eira vs West Brunswick
Well nine rounds in and Glen Eira is still undefeated and looks invincible. Daniel McDonald proved why he is one of Division 1’s best forwards, kicking five goals, which set the Gryphons up for a convincing win in the end. A five-goal opening term lead by McDonald, with handy support from Jack Richardson and Tim Richardson were some of the best in delivering yet another consecutive victory for the Gryphons. The Magpies however, shouldn’t be underestimated, as they did challenge Glen Eira in some areas up to half time through Josh Elston and Max Risstrom providing some contests to help West Brunswick in the game. The Gryphons showed why they are the benchmark for the comp as they stormed their way to a ten goal lead to finish the game winning 127 to 46.
Oakleigh vs Preston
Oakleigh took on Preston at the W.A Scammell Reserve on Saturday. A game that was rather deceiving at the quarter time break with only four points in it; the Oakleigh Krushers leading by a narrow margin. What happened next was an absolute rampage, giving Oakleigh the upper hand for the rest of the game. Spectators had front row seats to the Aaron

Cloke show. The Krushers superstar full forward plundered a bag of ten goals which set the crowd alight. This number of goals puts Cloke back into the front runner position for the comp’s leading goal kicker; well on-track to reach his top-scoring total of 75 from last season. The Bullants were just blown out of the water, and they were not able to recover from it. Patrick Davies kicked three handy goals, a stalwart for his team for most of the game. Nathan Douglas showed why he is one of Preston’s best players for 2023. The Krushers coming away with a comfortable win 133 to 44.
No Football this weekend due to the King’s Birthday. We will have to wait until June 17th for Round 9.
Prahran are home to Glen Eira; should be a cracker. Prahran hoping to get back on the winners list for Round 9. Will the Gryphons make it 9-0... time will tell.
Old Peninsula are away to West Brunswick. This will be another big one. Will the Pirates get there fifth win for the season or will the Magpies swoop to take the points?
Therry Penola are home to Kew FC, both coming off wins. Will Kew be able to secure back-to-back wins to cement them as a real contender, or will the Lions come and put on a show for their home crowd?
Preston is away to UHS-VU. The Bullants take on the 4th place UHS; will the Bullants get on the winners list for 2023 or will UHS get back on the winners list and bank another four points?
Oakleigh are home to Ivanhoe. Fresh off a commanding victory, will the Krushers back it up with another win and continue their dominance in the top two on the ladder or will the magpies cause an upset?

Beaumaris and Old Brighton lead the way in Div 1 Women’s
The first match of the round in Division 1 Women’s saw Old Brighton host Old Xaverians at Brighton Beach Oval. It didn’t take long for Old Brighton to take control of the game, kicking 5.7 to Old Xaverians 1.1 in the first half. With such a strong lead, Old Brighton could have been forgiven for easing off a little, but they refused to take their foot off the pedal and ended the game 52 points ahead of Old Xaverians.
India Tait will be pushing for a back-to-back win in the Tonner’s best and fairest count with another best on ground performance, while Lily Tait was phenomenal in front of goals, finishing with a haul of four which puts her into fourth spot on the goal kicking ladder. For Old Xavs, Monique Mennilli and Tahryn Mant worked tirelessly to mitigate Old Brighton’s attack.
Saturday morning also saw the Omlettes return to their winning ways, beating Old Haileybury by four goals. In a low scoring affair, Old Melburnians lead throughout the whole game, and it was not until the final quarter that Old Haileybury managed to slot a major.
As just the second Omlette to ever reach the 50-game milestone, Georgia Dunlop rose to the occasion, kicking a goal and earning the best on ground accolade for her side. Meanwhile, in a disappointing performance by Old Haileybury, Arielle Cathcart stood out as the best.
The match between Hampton Rovers and Beaumaris was called off in the second quarter following a serious injury to Rovers player Maisy Evans. At that point in time, the Sharks were leading the home side 2.6.18 to 0.1.1, however as the match was abandoned prior to the main break, the result of the game is drawn.
Both of Beaumaris’ goals were kicked by Rosalind Byrne who clearly played a pivotal part in the teams performance, named best on ground, and was well supported by the efforts of Cassandra Newman and Sienna Tedde.
Old Geelong have snuck into the top four with a scintillating win over Hawthorn AFC. Old Geelong put in a four-quarter effort, consistently hitting the scoreboard, while keeping the Hawks to just two behinds for the entire match.
The Hawks’ best efforts came in the third quarter, led by the exceptional Rachel Urquhart, but they were unable to maintain the pressure and allowed another four unanswered goals in the final term.
Juliet Grant was back in excellent form for Old Geelong, with another best on ground performance. Grant has only been absent from the best players twice this season.
The final match of the round saw Marcellin host Old Camberwell in a classic Sunday afternoon thriller. After a confidence-boosting win over the Omlettes last weekend, it was expected that Old Camberwell would come into the game fit and firing, but it was Marcellin who dominated early.
Both teams found it tough to score, with Marcellin managing the only goal of the first half which took them into the major break with a handy six-point lead. Old Camberwell managed to get the game back on their terms in the second half; however, they fell just short of the win, going down by three points at the final siren.
Annie Xanthos was instrumental in Marcellin’s victory, kicking one of their two goals, while Eloise De Rauch played a crucial part in Old Camberwell’s comeback attempt. Old Camberwell will be thinking it was another game that they let get away, considering they had the greater number of scoring shots.

Round 9 promises an exciting matchup between two top four sides, Old Geelong and Old Melburnians. Old Geelong come into the round on a three-game winning streak but will risk losing their spot in the top four if they are unsuccessful against the Omlettes.
Meanwhile, Old Xaverians will come up against the undefeated Beaumaris, hoping that they can cause a major upset to get their season back on track.
Hawthorn AFC will be looking to get their first win of the year when they face off with Marcellin OC in Round 9. While it will be a tough ask, Marcellin have been inconsistent performers this year, only managing consecutive wins once this year.
Old Camberwell Grammarians will host Hampton Rovers after the bye, in what is sure to be another fascinating battle. Hampton Rovers will be seeking revenge, after they went down by two goals when the two sides met in Round 2.
The final match of Round 9 will see the in-form Old Brighton travel to Caulfield to take on Old Haileybury. Old Brighton have proven to be a powerhouse this season, but Old Haileybury have also shown signs that they could be capable of a coup.

A typical Bloods performance as the Unicorns & Cobras can’t be split
Round 8 of Division 2 produced grandstand finishes across the section. A two point thriller at Lindsay Hassett Oval, a see-sawing battle at Whitefriars College and the season’s first draw at Woodfull-Miller Oval.
In a top four battle South Melbourne Districts had to fight, claw and scrap their way over the top of Brunswick. The tight opening half saw the Bloods holding a three point lead at the main change. Inaccuracy in the opening half saw Brunswick squander opportunities in front of goal. They found their kicking boots during the third term to kick four straight and go into the final quarter holding a three point lead.
The Bloods never-say-die attitude was on full display in the last quarter, led by Oscar Paulke, Dermot Murphy and Jason Clifford they chipped away at the 13 point lead, and hit the front late in the game. Holding on by two points, and swapping spots on the ladder with Brunswick.
Jamie Brooker and Dale Stewart kicked six goals between them in a victory to remember. The loss will sting Tommy Hunter and his team, Jasper Paevere led the way on the scoresheet with three majors, as Lewis Bonney McKenzie and Tahj Haddock were named amongst the best.
Brunswick will look to return to the winning list in a fortnight’s time against the hot-to-trot Whitefriars, while South Melbourne head out to Koonung Park to face off against the Old Yarra Cobras.
There was evidently a scoring end at Whitefriars College on Saturday as the home side faced off against Aquinas. After leading by 11 points at quarter time, a second quarter blitz from Whitefriars had them extend the lead out to 25 points. The third term became an incredible shootout with a total of 13 goals kicked. Nine of them the way of Aquinas who turned the four goal deficit into a five point lead at the final change. The Friars didn’t panic at the final change despite momentum seemingly against them, they stayed composed and finished the final term the stronger to come off the ground winners by 10 points.
Currently in fourth spot on the ladder, they remain a game behind Brunswick, but the 97% could prove to come back to haunt them going forward. What won’t hurt is the incredible goalkicking display Daniel Wood is putting on this year. Another six majors on Saturday, taking his season tally to 40 and keeping his average at five goals a game. He is now eight goals ahead of Parkside’s Ben Radford in the battle of the sharpshooters.
Sam Kieseker was the best player on the ground, running rampant and kicking four goals of his own. On the flipside, Tobias Box (4 goals) and Jacob Morrison-Story (3 goals) were key playmakers in getting Aquinas into a position of strength throughout the day.
Naturally, the travellers will walk off the ground disappointed to lose, but they go into the bye knowing they’ve got the capabilities of matching it with the best sides in Division 2. They’ll welcome Bulleen Templestowe to the College when the footy resumes. The Friars will be pleased to get back on the winners list having lost their previous two games.
Whenever sides play off in a draw, one team will usually feel like it’s as good as a win, the other as frustrating as a loss. Potentially, there’s a presumption that MHSOB and Old Yarra Cobras could both feel like they’ve lost after the performance of the weekend which ended in a stalemate.
The Unicorns held a 29-point lead at three quarter time. Old Yarra Cobras came storming home, but kicked 5.7.37 in the process of doing so. They’ll be thinking what if we kicked straighter. Melbourne High, might be wondering what happened to their attacking speed on the ball, being held to just one goal in the final quarter.
Nevertheless, the two sides in the middle of the table couldn’t be split, in a game that had both sets of fans on the edge of their seats as the clock counted down to full time.
Jack Hall almost proved to be the hero for the Cobras, a big bag of nine goals, he couldn’t be stopped in the forward arc, off the back of five goals last week. For the third time this year, Unicorn Mat Periera has kicked five goals or more in a contest. Julian Eimutis continues to play the game at the elite level.
Round 9 sees the Cobras face off against the Bloods at home. MHSOB write the next chapter in the story against Old Paradians. Two sides who’ve had great battles in Division 2 in recent years.
The ladder leaders Parkside were forced into a first half scrap against Old Paradians. Without Daisy Thomas this week, the Paradians continued the momentum of the past fortnight with a feisty, contested first half. Three goals to one at the main change.
The green, blue and purple monster was tamed after half-time as the home team worked their way to another seven majors from there, to just one. Resulting in a 53 point victory.

The side that came up from Division 3 men’s as the runners up have put together a stellar start to 2023 as they climb the rungs of the Divisions. The defensive has been a feature, conceding just 50 points a game to date. It’s a case of top vs. bottom in round nine when they come back from the bye, facing off against St Mary’s Salesian.
The Old Paradians will look to get back on the winners list heading back to Garvey Oval against MSHOB, a team they beat twice in 2022.
Bulleen Templestowe were keen on making a statement from the first bounce on Saturday against St Mary’s Salesian. The victory was set up by a strong pre-game chat, and then a seven goal to one opening quarter.
Anthony Lucisano kicked three goals and was named amongst the best players. The work of Joshua Torouno was also pivotal for the Ants.
St Mary’s could have been excused for dropping their heads after trailing by 38 points at quarter time. Instead, they won every quarter after that and outscored the Ants by 13 points to finish 25 points behind.
While it’s not the ultimate result the club is searching for, there’ll be little nuggets of gold the coaches can take from the performance after quarter time.
With 10 rounds to go in Division 2, the ladder and final four certainly doesn’t look set. It’s well and truly wide open. Already proven that any side on any given day can produce a bit of magic. The excitement is building to see how it all unfolds.

Therry Penola end drought in season first win over MCC
Round 8 had it all with a season first win, a draw and further confirmation that Williamstown CY is the league’s unstoppable force.
Therry Penola took on MCC at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. Coming into this week winless, Therry Penola was looking to make the most of their home ground advantage and secure their first win.
MCC was in for a long day with only 12 players taking to the field against Therry Penola’s 19. A strong first half effort from both sides saw Therry Penola score 15 points while managing to keep MCC scoreless, however MCC’s defenders showed courage in challenging Therry Penola’s forward line. Returning from the main break, Therry Penola had four more shots at goal with MCC having just one and scoring a behind. A huge last quarter push from MCC, shut down all scoring shots by Therry Penola, and Ellecia Baker kicked MCC’s only goal of the game.
Ruby O’halloran kicked 2 majors for Therry Penola while Abbey Duggan and Lucy Mclaren kicked one each. Matilda Ryan was best on for Therry Penola while Laura Suckling starred for MCC. Despite MCC’s best efforts, Therry Penola came out on top with a comfortable 22-point victory.
In a Round 3 rematch, the Albert Park Falcons faced off against Old Trinity at Albert Park Oval. Although undermanned due to multiple injuries, Albert Park came in as the favourites given their high position on the ladder. A frantic opening quarter saw two sides desperate to gain an early lead. As both sides were unable to break away from the other, the margin sat at four points going into half time. Old Trinity amped up the pressure in the third with a goal and three behinds, while Albert Park only managed to score one point. A dominant last quarter effort from the Falcons saw
much of the game being played in their forward 50, and best on ground Hannah Burr playing a considerable role in keeping the ball locked in. With both teams having 27 points on the scoreboard, neither side was able to score before the final siren.
Although Albert Park was looking to bag their second win over Old Trinity, Old Trinity’s development as a team over the last five weeks stood up to the test. In a rare occurrence, the four points were split this week.
Over at Walter Galt Reserve, the Parkdale Vultures took on Williamstown CY, the league’s unstoppable force. In a close first quarter, both teams were unable to score a major, but managed to get behinds on the board. Parkdale’s defenders worked tirelessly to keep Williamstown at bay and did so successfully, by only conceding ten points going into half time. Georgia Collinson was integral to Parkdale’s success, keeping the league’s leading goal scorer Alessia Acquaro to one goal. The pressure from both teams continued going into the third quarter, yet the Vultures were unable to convert still having only scored one point. With Parkdale 12 points down going into the fourth, Williamstown put on an impressive last effort and ran away with the game, defeating Parkdale, 27-1.
At Ferndale Park, St Mary’s Salesian hosted Ivanhoe for the first time these teams have played this season. Ivanhoe was able to get an early lead, scoring 14 points and managing to keep St Mary’s to one behind going into quarter time. Demonstrating their ability to skilfully move the ball downfield regardless of the wet and muddy conditions, the Ivies extended their lead to 23 points going into the half time break. St Mary’s turned up the heat in the third, winning clearances and controlling more of the play. Although dominant in forward entries, St Mary’s struggled to convert. Both teams put in a tough last quarter effort, scoring two majors each.

Anna Vrsecky was best on for St Mary’s, while Sophie Callahan was best on for Ivanhoe. Although Ivanhoe were able to convert more successfully than St Mary’s, the Saints were applying intense defensive pressure, laying over 20 tackles per quarter.
Looking ahead to Round 9, Therry Penola will take on Williamstown, Albert Park will verse Ivanhoe, St Mary’s will take on Old Trinity and Parkdale will face off against MCC.

Cobras continue dominance, Hawthorn and Elsternwick impress
Round 8 of the VAFA football delivered thrilling encounters and notable performances across the division. The top-ranked Cobras extended their winning streak, while Hawthorn and Elsternwick showcased their strength and determination. Let’s dive into the action and preview the upcoming Round 9 clashes.
In a captivating match, Wattle Park overcame a halftime deficit to triumph over Richmond Central by 17 points. Richmond started strongly, leading by 3 points at the break, but Wattle Park’s third-quarter surge turned the tide in their favor.
Kieren Jenkins’ three-goal contribution proved vital in their comeback win. This victory secures Wattle Park’s spot in the top four, intensifying the race for the final spots in the higher echelons of the ladder.
When Canterbury entered enemy territory, it was Power House who fought valiantly against the ladderleading Canterbury Cobras in the first half, trailing by just four points at halftime.
However, the Cobras unleashed their power in the second half, limiting Power House to a mere two goals while scoring nine of their own. Tom Lowden’s fivegoal haul highlighted the Cobras’ offensive prowess, while Brodie Tohara was instrumental for Power House, earning himself the best player on the ground for the losing side, the 17 year old will take confidence in his performance in just his third game of senior footy. Canterbury’s commanding 47-point win solidifies their position at the top of the table.
The next game of the round was Elsternwick taking on La Trobe, with Elsternwick displaying their superiority against La Trobe University, recording a resounding 70-point victory. Despite a competitive first quarter, Elsternwick’s scoring prowess and the impressive performances of Blake Pantas and Eli Holland-Dean propelled them to a commanding lead.
The win boosts their percentage and places them just one game outside the top four. With a clash against Richmond Central in Round 9, Elsternwick aims to remain in contention for back-to-back finals campaigns.
The final game of the round saw Swinburne face their biggest test yet taking on one of the league’s best, Hawthorn. In a match where Swinburne showcased their rejuvenated belief, Hawthorn’s defensive dominance and cohesive gameplay proved too much to handle.
Hawthorn led from start to finish, sealing a 66-point victory. Charlie Boots and Justin Raiti were instrumental in Hawthorn’s triumph, leading their team with impressive performances.
Swinburne fought gallantly throughout the game, with Aaron Colven, Aiden Vesty, and Mackena Huf shining for the university side.
Round 9 presents an enticing clash between the Cobras and Hawthorn, two powerhouse teams vying for divisional supremacy. This highly anticipated encounter promises to be the game of the year thus far, with both sides showcasing exceptional form.

Albert Park stuns Masala as Bulls and Demons secure quality wins
The first game of the round saw Albert Park take on Masala in what was a very competitive clash. The first quarter saw the Falcons apply instant pressure on the Tigers with a 4-goal to 1 quarter (which included 12 scoring shots to 3). The Falcons took a 24-point lead over the Tigers into the first break. The second term saw Masala make their way back into the game with a 2-goal quarter which helped reduce the lead to 13 points at halftime.
The third quarter was all about converting opportunities. While Masala had 8 scoring shots to the Falcons’ 5, it was the Falcons that were able to convert with 3 goals to only 1 Masala goal. The Falcons extended their lead out to 20 points. The final quarter was a nail-biter as Masala were able to fight back kicking 3 of the last 4 goals. However, the Falcons were able to hold off kicking the final 2 goals of the game and securing their most important win of the season so far with a 15-point win.
Reece French-Lightfoot and Christopher Marson had 3 majors each for the Falcons whilst Ashley Evans had 2 goals of his own. Goal kickers for Masala included Tom Williamson (2), Zac Pahos and Luke Broomhall. Among the best for the Falcons were Jack Aimes, Alistair Lupo and Felix Metx. Amongst the best for Masala were Deakin Harris, Flynn Cassar and Jordan Gibbon. Albert Park will look to continue their winning ways when they face Eley Park whilst Masala will look to get back into the winners’ column, but standing in their way will be a Box Hill North side that took them to the final siren in their last clash.
The second game of the round saw league leaders North Brunswick take on Eley Park. The Bulls got ahead early kicking 3 goals in the first whilst keeping the Sharks goalless to hold an 18-point lead at quarter time. The Sharks kept the pressure on in the second quarter keeping the Bulls to only another 3 goals whilst kicking a goal themselves to keep the Bulls only 31 points ahead with a half of football to play.
The Bulls, however, came out rampaging in the third with a mammoth 10-goal quarter which saw their lead extended to 89 points with 25 minutes of football to be played. In the final quarter, the Sharks were once again able to slow the breaks on a Bulls breakaway only allowing 3 goals, however, in the end, it was the Bulls that once again proved why they are on the top of a ladder with a 110-point victory (their third win by a margin of 90+).
Jareth Ombia and Andrew Ramzy both slotted 4 goals for the Bulls whilst Simon Woodward and Jarrod Mcdonald contributed 3 and 2 goals respectively. For the Sharks, Aaron Williams was the team’s lone goalkicker. Among the best for the Bulls were Zac Dicianni, Simon Woodward and Marcus Watt. Amongst the best for the Sharks were Zachary Hayes, Angus Fowler and Ryan Szigeti. The Bulls will next Face St Johns which will be the first away game for the Bulls since Round 4. The Sharks will face another tough matchup against a Falcons side that just defeated a top 2 side in Masala.
The final game of the round saw St Johns take on Box Hill North in a clash that went right down to the last quarter; a contest that was made tougher because of the previous nights’ rain. Both teams had a slow first quarter as they both tried to get a read on one another’s game plan. However, with more scoring shots, it was the Demons that got a narrow advantage with a 3-point lead at quarter time. St John’s were able to make their way back into the game with a 3-goal quarter. The Demons were able to kick 2 goals of their own, however, gave up the lead, seeing themselves down by 1 point with a half of football to play.

The third quarter saw both teams struggle to turn their opportunities into goals with only 1 goal for the quarter between the two sides despite 7 scoring shots. The goal however was a Demons goal that allowed them to take a 1-point lead heading into the final quarter. The final quarter saw the Demons run away with the match pilling on 4 goals whilst only allowing a single goal from the JOCS. The Demons secured a very important 24-point win, closing the gap on Masala in the process.
Benjamin Ayache kicked 2 goals for the JOCS whilst Matthew De Poilly and Kailum Newland also contributed with goals of their own. For the Demons, Joshua Chivers led the way with 3 goals and teammate Joshua Hocking kicked 2. Amongst the best for the JOCS were Corey Ely, Vaughan Savage and Nicholas Terrill. Amongst the best for the Demons were Sam Kenna, Blake Williams and Jack Dullard. The JOCS will next face a big task in the form of league leaders North Brunswick. MILESTONES
Johannah Griffin (Albert Park Falcons)
Johannah Griffin will make APFNC history this weekend when she becomes the first women’s player to reach 50 games for the club. The inaugural & current skipper has starred since arriving at the Falcons in 2019, winning 3 club B & F & 2 VAFA B & F awards from her three seasons. Griffin has been a regular on VAFA podcasts, awards night and more recently a headline guest on Inside the Boundary. Off-field, Johannah has been an important & valued member of our club & you’ll often find her dancing until the early hours of the morning at Oval 20 & club functions. Thank you for your commitment to our club Johannah, we wish you all the best as you run out for the 50th time.
Jess Bennett (Monash Blues)
Jess has been at the club since the beginning of the reserves women’s program in 2018. She was awarded best and fairest in her first year at the club. She celebrated her 50th match in style kicking 2 goals and helping her team to a convincing victory. She is a leader both on and off the field, just recently, introducing the first Indigenous training tops for Monash Blues. We wish her all the best with the rest of the season.
Declan Kennedy (St Bernards)
Good Luck to Declan Kennedy on his 100th VAFA game this week. After Juniors at St Bernards and in the EDFL, Declan joined our Colts program in 2014 progressing through U19 Premier ranks and after some impressive Reserves games Declan made his Senior debut in 2019. Since the Covid interrupted seasons Declan has been a strong contributor in Senior and Reserve footy ... well done, Declan! 250
Ben Fleming (Ivanhoe AFC)
Ivanhoe AFC congratulates Ben Fleming on his 250th game in Round 8 (June 3). ‘Flemo’ is only the eighth Ivanhoe player to ever reach this amazing milestone. With a strong mark, accurate kick, and a super competitor, Flemo has proved versatile enough to play forward, defence and midfield roles since he joined the Hoers in 2007. Flemo notched his 100th game in 2012 and won the reserves B&F that year. He was co-captain of Ivanhoe’s reserves premiership in Division 2 in 2015 and was awarded life membership in 2018. He has always put the team first and never shirks a tough assignment. He can be counted on to win one-on-one contests and is a shining example to younger teammates. It all adds up to an outstanding contribution from our resident mathematician. You’re a huge plus for us, Flemo. Well done doctor!

The Holmesglen Under 19 Division 1 Men’s Footy Festival is set to provide an exciting day of football action next weekend on Saturday, June 17, at Elsternwick Park.
The festival will feature three highly anticipated matches that will showcase the talent of the emerging young players.
VAFA Media has taken a closer look at the matches and the teams involved.
Old Trinity vs. Old Xaverians (9:20am)
The day kicks off with an enticing clash between Old Trinity and Old Xaverians. Both teams have shown promising form in the competition and are currently placed second and third on the ladder, respectively.
Old Trinity has had a solid season so far, with five wins from eight matches. They boast a strong scoring record, with Ed Chard leading the charge, having scored 17 goals this season.
The last fortnight has seen the T’s kick over 100 points in both victories. Their ability to find the goals early on will be crucial in this encounter.
Marcus Deayton, Jack Jenkins and Torren Arthur have been instrumental across the first eight weeks of the season for the green and gold, and fans will be expecting more of the same from the trio against the strength of the Xav’s.
Old Xaverians have also displayed their proficiency in front of the posts in 2023. Averaging 93 points per game across the first two months of the year.
With a well-balanced team, they will rely on the goal-scoring prowess of their key player, Justin Salce, who has found his way to 20 goals this season. Since losing to the ladder leaders Beaumaris by 101 points, the red and black mafia have won their last three matches.
Expect a competitive battle between these two sides as they vie for an important victory.
Beaumaris Sharks vs. Old Melburnians (11:40am)
In the second match of the day, Beaumaris will clash with Old Melburnians. The Sharks currently sit at the top of the ladder, undefeated after eight rounds, while Old Melburnians are not far behind, occupying the fifth spot. One game outside the top four.
The Sharks have been a dominant force this season, showcasing their strength both in attack and defense. (Ranked #1 for points for: 116.75 a game, and ranked #1 for points against: 50.25 points per game).
Led by the scoring duo of Calsher Dear and Seb Stewart, who have a combined total of 38 goals, the Sharks will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak and further solidify their position at the top of the ladder.
Old Melburnians have demonstrated their competitiveness with four wins to their name. They’ll be keen to arrest the tide after three straight losses to the Rovers, Old Xaverians and Old Trinity.
This OM’s side has chopped and changed through the early part of 2023, Arthur Rush has had such a strong start to his campaign, he was elevated to the senior side to make his debut a fortnight ago, that included a contender for the goal of the year.
The Navy Blue senior side, under Paul Satterley, are certainly not afraid to give young men in this side, the opportunity higher up.
With Henry Nicholls leading their scoring charts with 18 goals, they will be determined to upset the ladder leaders and make a statement of their own.
Hampton Rovers vs. Parkdale Vultures (2:00pm)
The final match of the day features a clash between archrivals Hampton Rovers and Parkdale Vultures. This will be the first time these two sides have met this year.
Hampton Rovers have been bolstered by the scoring prowess of Will Crawford, who has registered an impressive 19 goals this season. Their ability to maintain their scoring form will be vital in securing a victory against a determined Vultures side.
Nine players in the Rovers line-up have played every game so far this year. Despite an unfortunate pregame incident, Josh Hudghton (son of St Kilda legend Max) was recently elevated to make his senior debut. Should he be asked to play in this contest, he’ll come in with 15 goals next to his name, a complimentary forward to Crawford.
Parkdale have had a challenging season, with only one win to their name. However, they will be motivated to cause an upset against their rivals and turn their season around.
Will Watson and Luke Sullivan have been two shining stars for the Vultures in an otherwise bleak start to 2023.
The clash between these two teams promises an intense contest with pride and bragging rights on the line.
Entry to Elsternwick Park the day is free and on-site parking is available for $5.
All games will be streamed live through the VAFA Website and VAFA Facebook Page. You will not miss a moment of the action right throughout the day.
The Holmesglen Under 19 Division 1 Men’s Footy Festival at Elsternwick Park is set to provide a day of thrilling football action. With top teams battling it out, high-scoring players showcasing their talent, fans can look forward to an exciting and memorable day of VAFA footy.
