Big V Representation
2024 marks 99 years of Big V Representative football for the VAFA, since our first game against Adelaide in 1925. It is an exciting time for all those players, coaches, and support staff involved, and by extension, their families, teammates, and Clubs. My belief is that the Amateur players value representative football more so than those in other community competitions. The respect for our rich history and traditional success that is synonymous with pulling on the Big V continues as strong today as ever.
This spirit is captured at our annual Big V Luncheon, which will again be held at the RACV Club on Friday 5th July. I refer to this event as our ‘Hall of Fame’ equivalent, as it is a great celebration of VAFA football. You don’t have to have played Big V football to attend and enjoy this occasion. This year’s event will see us recognise the careers of three outstanding players in Micah Berry (Old Melburnians), Andy Cultera (Aquinas, Old Trinity) and Nick Bourke (Old Xaverians, Marcellin). The event will also feature the presentation of the Big V guernseys to our current day players – an occasion made more special for them when shared with their families, teammates and Club representatives in attendance. And this year will see the awarding of Life Membership to Kylie Da Fonte (MHSOB), marking 20 years of service to the VAFA as a trainer for Big V teams.
saw
Jason ReddickCEO(AEST) and the Men’s at 4.30pm (AEST) on Sunday July 7th. The matches will be live streamed for free through the VAFA website.
We are fortunate that those teams will again be led by Greg Hutchison and Paul Groves who both have extensive coaching experience and knowledge of the VAFA competition, as well as senior coaching experience at the elite levels of AFL (Greg at Melbourne) and AFLW (Paul at Western Bulldogs).
2023
a sterling
performance by our Premier Women’s Big V team
2024 sees the re-emergence of our Representative team consisting of players from teams in Premier B to Division 3. This Representative team concept has its beginnings back in 1982, with the VAFA having won 23 of the 34 matches played since then at just under 70% success rate. This year VAFA will host Bendigo Football Netball League at Elsternwick Park on Saturday 6th July.
Again, we are fortunate to have secured the services of Luke Mahoney as senior coach. Having guided Fitzroy up the ranks through to the Premier B Men’s Grand Final in 2023, Luke has a great understanding of the calibre of players beneath William Buck Premier Men’s level and it’s wonderful to see that the initial squad features players from 29 different VAFA Clubs.
Tickets can be purchased through the VAFA Website and we look forward to welcoming everyone to experience this grand occasion.
2023 saw a sterling performance by our Premier Women’s Big V team, winning by 63 points, to remain undefeated in all 4 games of representative football since inception of the women’s team in 2017.
Last year’s Premier Men’s Big V match ended in an exciting draw at the end of regular time, before our men prevailed by 19 points at the end of the second period of extra time.
Having secured those two wins at Elsternwick Park last year, our Premier Big V Men’s and Women’s teams will head to Perth to defend their titles at Bassendean Oval, the home of Swan Districts. The Women’s game will kick off at 2.15pm
As a new initiative, our media team are shedding light on the Big V with the introduction of a series of Big V Podcasts, hosted by Jason Bennett and Joey Pignataro, featuring stories and guests from our current teams.
This year we will also feature our best young Men’s talent with an U19 North v South match to be played as a curtain raiser to the Representative game. No doubt this showcase of talent will attract a lot of interest and a healthy crowd.
Congratulations to all the players who have been invited to join the initial training squads for 2024. We wish you well in your preparations and with the full support of our VAFA Community, we look forward to seeing you in action as proud VAFA representatives.

SKOB topple the Tonners in William Buck Premier Men’s
Last year’s runners-up made a big statement in Round 8 of William Buck Premier Men’s and will head to the bye in outright second.
ST KEVIN’S have provided a timely reminder of their premiership credentials with a thrilling 2-point win over the previously undefeated OLD BRIGHTON at TH King Oval.
It was the third consecutive single-digit nailbiter between the two teams.
The Tonners kicked the opening 2 goals, SKOB the next two to lead by 2 points at the first change.
Old Brighton led by a game-high 14 points early in the third before SKOB added 1.4 to 0.1 in 25 minutes to close within a kick at the last change.
Goals were again at a premium in the final term – SKOB levelling the game twice before Sam Tucker put them 7 points up at the 22-minute mark. Finn Campigli responded 2.5 minutes later to make it a 1-point game.
St Kevin’s ultimately hung on in their fourth consecutive thriller to kick a game clear in outright second, one game behind the Tonners.
Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “Our group is building great belief against the best opposition and how to manage those situations.
“I was just so proud of our boys’ second half and ability to stay engaged and keep challenging the best team all the way until the final siren.”
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Their dominance in the ruck was difficult to counter at times and they were very good at stoppages.
“We looked dangerous with speed on the ball to one-on-ones Inside 50 but Kevs were able to get control across half back to counter that.”
UNIVERSITY BLUES snapped COLLEGIANS’ 5-game winning streak in fine style at Harry Trott Oval.
The reigning premiers didn’t fully capitalise on their early dominance, booting 3.4 to 1.0 to only lead by 16 points at the first break.
It was all Blues in the second quarter as they piled on 5 unanswered goals, holding the Lions scoreless to open up a 3-goal half-time advantage.
The Blues held their ground into the breeze in the third term – 2 goals apiece maintaining their lead as they turned for home with a 16-point break.
The final quarter belonged to James Stewart, who tore the game apart with 6 goals in 13 minutes as the Blues finished with 8 for the quarter and a super impressive 38-point win to join the Lions at 5-3.
Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “The game will be remembered for James Stewart’s six goals between the 15-and 28-minute mark of the last quarter which was amazing to watch… I witnessed the
best 15 minutes of football from an individual in A-Grade footy. It was phenomenal.
“That shouldn’t take away from our team performance for the three-and-a-half quarters though. We were relentless with our pressure on Collegians and managed to stifle their aggressive ball movement.”
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “We started reasonably well but weren’t able to capitalise. From that point on, the Blues were able to able to execute the fundamentals better and they gained the ascendency.
“We stayed in the contest and kept coming, however, the Blues dominated the last 15 minutes.
“We’ll take some good lessons from the weekend and look forward to another challenge against Brighton.”
OLD SCOTCH set up their 3-goal win over OLD MELBURNIANS with a dominant first half that handed them a 43-point half-time lead.
The Cardinals were in complete control, stifling OM’s movement and generating 18 scoring shots to 5 in the first half.
OMs coach Paul Satterley challenged his players to lift and they responded, turning the game with a scintillating 7-goal third quarter that saw them charge back within 13 points at the final change.
But full credit to Old Scotch, who showed composure to regain control through back-to-back goals from Ben HAYS which reestablished a more comfortable advantage.
Try as they might, OMs couldn’t quite get close to engender panic in the Cards, who scored a 3-goal win that keeps them in touch with the Top 4.
Mark GNATT (Old Scotch): “Our first half was very good off the back of our strong defensive actions that enabled us to transition the ball with purpose - James Tarrant, Isaac Conway and Aidan Franetic led the way. Our latest debutant Robbie Beckworth played his role very well too.
“Full credit to OMs for their response and the pressure they put us under. It was pleasing that we were able to arrest OMs momentum and finish the match strongly ourselves.”
Paul SATTERLEY (OMs): “Once again we didn’t fire a shot for a half of footy and the scoreboard flattered us to half-time, given Scotch’s dominance.
“However I was really pleased with the fight my lads showed in the second half to get within a couple of goals. We need to build on our better effort and continue this form into Round 9.”
OLD XAVERIANS chalked up a third straight win as they virtually led ST BERNARDS from start to finish at Toorak Park.
Ed Delany was unstoppable early, booting 6 of the home team’s first 7 goals as they opened a 22-point half-time lead in an entertaining contest.
The third quarter contained a combined 11 goals –Old Xavs kicking 7 to 4 to open up a 42-point three-quarter time advantage, thanks to their remarkable accuracy of 16.4.
But that accuracy completely disappeared in the last term, the home team finishing with 1.7 to 5.4 as the Snowdogs finished strong with the last 4 goals to reduce the final margin to 21 points.
Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “The game was pretty evenly matched for most of the afternoon, we kicked very straight in the first half so made the most of our opportunities to gain ascendancy.
“First time playing St Bernard’s for a while - really impressed with their game style and effort and have no doubt they’ll win plenty of games moving forward.
“To chalk up three wins in a row before the bye was super important. Another strong team performance - a couple of forwards kicking 6 goals each in Ed Delany & Stirling Phipps-Parsons was great reward for effort from all.”
Steve Alessio (St Bernards): “Credit to Old Xavs today with their ball movement and scoring efficiency for most of the game. We had some good patches of play early and late in the game.
At the moment, too few are shouldering the bulk of the workload. We need a more even contribution across the board.”
The final match of the round saw UNIVERSITY BLACKS snap their 3-game losing streak with a critical win over FITZROY at Melbourne Uni Oval.
The opening quarter was largely a grind - Blacks with a 5-point advantage at the first break.
The hosts kicked 3 unanswered goals early in the second term before the Roys responded with a couple of their own to close back within a couple of kicks.
Fitzroy found the opener in the third before Blacks gained the upper hand. However, their inaccuracy (2.6 to 1.1) kept the visitors within 23 points at three-quarter time.
The early stages of the final term were an arm wrestle before 2 goals in 3 minutes broke it open for Blacks. In the end it was the hosts collecting an invaluable 4 premiership points.
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “It was good to get back on the winners list after 3 straight losses. Our pressure and defensive game was strong, as was our ability to win our share of contest.”
Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “Just were never really able to get our game going, which was frustrating.
“Showed glimpses of good footy but were 10% off for most of the day and you can’t afford that in this competition.
“After a big first eight weeks in A-Grade, the bye has come at a good time for us.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
Lauren AtkinsonMagpies swoop Cobras in dominant display to snap winless streak
At the completion of Round 8 in the William Buck Premier Women’s competition, the top four appear to be secure, with Collegians solidifying their position to move six points and percentage clear of 5th placed Caulfield Grammarians.
The first match of the round saw Caulfield Grammarians host ladder-leading Old Scotch, in what presented a great opportunity for Caulfield to cause a big upset and announce themselves to the competition as a serious finals contender for the 2024 season.
However, Old Scotch were relentless right from the first bounce, registering the first four majors of the day to take a 21-point lead into the first break. By half time, the margin stretched out to 65 points and the siren couldn’t sound quickly enough for Caulfield in what was proving to be a non-contest.
After taking the chance to reset, Caulfield fought gallantly to break even with Old Scotch in the second half, with each side registering an additional 17 points.
While Caulfield will be disappointed by their output on the day which allowed Old Scotch to kick their highest score of the season so far, Chloe McDonald and Brigitte Wolhuter can hold their heads high knowing they did their best to slow the onslaught.
Showcasing the talent found at the top of the competition, Old Scotch had five of their seven recently announced Big V Squad nominees listed in the best players of the day, with Jade Wise leading the way as best on ground with three majors.
Collegians showed that they deserve their spot in the top four, stunning Monash Blues by 85 points.
Collegians were ferocious from the get-go, controlling the play and consistently hitting the scoreboard. Their third quarter was particularly impressive as they scored 34 points while not allowing Monash to score.
It wasn’t until the last quarter that Monash finally managed to register a score, with goals coming from Clare Konstanty and Alicia Myers, but even then, Collegians were able to outscore the Blues, finishing with a final score of 97 points.
It was a team effort by Collegians who showcased their depth with nine individual goal scorers, but Krystal Russell and Roxy Beuzeville were especially impressive.
On a day where it was hard to find any positives for Monash, the efforts of Brook Thompson and Anna Purtill were a silver lining.
At Righetti Oval, St Kevin’s continued their undefeated streak with a 27-point win over a competitive Coburg outfit.
Elaina Domagala scored the first goal of the day for Coburg, but St Kevin’s responded with two goals in quick succession to take an 8-point lead into the first break.
Coburg were impressive in the second, scoring the only two goals of the term, however, St Kevin’s returned from the main break with their characteristic ascendancy, outscoring Coburg by 29 points in the second half to take a decisive victory.
Coburg had a remarkable day in terms of goal-kicking accuracy, not missing a single shot, however, will need to work on their forward-mid connection to set up more scoring opportunities if they wish to challenge the top sides this year.
Sheridan Bennett and Georgia Sampson continued their excellent form, both featuring in Coburg’s bests for their fifth time this season.
If St Kevin’s didn’t already have enough talent in their forward line with the likes of Kate Stanton, Sarah Cameron and Hannah Smith, Holly Kenealy is now emerging as another star forward, as she added three goals for a second consecutive week.
West Brunswick travelled to Doncaster Reserve, where they overcame Old Yarra Cobras by 18 points, leapfrogging into 6th position on the ladder.
West Brunswick had plenty of the Sherrin early, managing 8 scoring shots to 1 in the first term, but due to inaccuracy took only a 12-point lead into the first break. The Magpies continued to assert their dominance in the second term to extend the margin to 20 points by half time.
Old Yarra scored the only goal of the third term, but failed to capitalise on the momentum, allowing West Brunswick to wrestle back control in the final term and earn their third win of the season.
Alexandra Herrington was phenomenal in her first game for West Brunswick, while Mia Giannopoulos was the standout player for Old Yarra.
On Sunday, Melbourne University Women’s came close to pulling off the upset of the season as they coughed up an early lead to lose to Kew by a slender 12 points.
The first term was tightly contested with both sides narrowly missing their shots at goal to sit on two points each at the first break.
Melbourne University got their second term off to the dream start, as Georgia Nicholas kicked a lovely running goal in the first minute of play, however, Dakota Villiva responded with her own fanciful goal minutes later, evening the scores once again.
Not to be outdone, Asha Price kicked a goal of the year contender from the boundary line to reclaim the lead for the home side. Another goal from Asha with 10 seconds to go saw Melbourne University take a 12-point lead into the main break.
Eve Sheehan kicked the first goal of the third term to stretch Melbourne University’s lead out to a game-high 18 points, however, it would be downhill from there for Melbourne University as they did not manage to hit the scoreboard again. Kew went on to kick the next five goals of the game, breaking the hearts of Melbourne Uni Women’s as they denied them of the upset victory.
Brooke Randall and Victoria Holt have had perfect seasons so far, named in the bests every week, and they both impressed once again.
Georgia Wyett led the charge for Kew, ably supported by Big V Squad members Dakota Villiva and Amelia Dawborn.
This weekend provides an opportunity for teams to rest and recoup, as they prepare for Round 9, which promises a series of thrilling contests.
Kew is set to host Collegians in a battle of 3rd vs 4th, with both sides coming off wins in Round 8.
It has been a long wait, but finally the two undefeated sides will come head-to-head, with St Kevin’s hosting Old Scotch at Righetti Oval. Expect a showcase of the top talent in the VAFA Women’s competition as we see which side can maintain their undefeated streak.
The contest between West Brunswick and Melbourne University Women’s is shaping up to be an intriguing one, with both sides having shown promising signs over the past few weeks.
On the other hand, Caulfield has been disappointing the last few weeks, and Monash Blues will look to make the most of this mid-season slump when they come face to face with the Grammarians at Frearson Oval.
Finally, Coburg will have the opportunity to overtake Old Yarra Cobras on the ladder if they can get the win at Doncaster Reserve.

PREMIER B MEN’S
Paddy GrindlayOne out of the fire for De La Salle
Ryan O’Meara was De La Salle’s saviour, coolly slotting a last-minute goal from a set shot to secure a one-point win over an inspired St Bedes/Mentone
The winless Tigers came to play on Saturday afternoon, taking a slight lead at every break in a desperately close affair - in what’s been a desperately close season in Premier B. When Jack Behnk launched a 55-metre missile through the big sticks to put the Tigers nine points clear with ten minutes to go, it appeared the home side were destined to secure its first win of the season - cheered on by a raucous home crowd at Mentone Reserve.
Behnk had a repeat opportunity to put the result beyond De La’s grasp with 26 minutes gone in the final quarter but saw his flying left-foot shot at goal drift to the right-hand side for a behind. With less than a minute remaining in the game and St Bedes / Mentone leading by just five points, Ryan O’Meara - with three goals already to his name - found himself on the right side of the umpire’s whistle, the man in green paying a free against the Tigers for a throw with the ball inside De La’s forward 50. O’Meara duly converted the set shot, sending De La into a frenzy; the ball ending up in the hands of forward Adrian Indovino as time ran out for a 13.13 (91) to 12.18 (90) victory.
“Pleased to finally be on the other end of a close result,” De La coach Nick Hyland said on Monday, having lost three games this year by a combined total of 13 points. Thomas Deane-Jones, Luke Healy and skipper Sean Fisher were composed in defence, with St Bedes/Mentone’s superior ball movement and pressure showing up the men in blue and yellow.
Behnk, Josh Cowan, Jack Ferraro, Lachie Palfrey and Liam Segar all kicked two apiece for the Tigers, who will return from the week off hungrier than ever to register their first win of 2024 against Williamstown CYMS
Con Terzoglou’s side lacked the ability to execute in a tight first half against Old Trinity and weren’t given an opportunity to respond in the second half as Donald McDonald’s men booted seven goals to one after half time. The 13.12 (90) to 3.9 (27) victory slides Donald McDonald’s squad to the top of a host of teams with a 5-3 record, a percentage of 123.1 good enough to squeeze Old Trinity into third spot at the King’s Birthday break - 0.43% clear of De La Salle in fourth.
“A bit of a tough slog in the conditions led to plenty of stoppages and strong tackling from both sides,” said McDonald. “We were able to remain competitive across four quarters, and defended really well, providing repeat entries for our forwards to kick a winning score.”
Goals to Sam Mason either side of half time largely put paid to the contest, while Dom Payman provided a dangerous target for the likes of Hugo McGlashan, Christos Manoussakis and Alex Emery.
The CYs lacked class, according to coach Con Terzoglou, and gave the OTs far too many opportunities to hit the scoreboard.
“They like ball in hand, we gave them ball in hand, and we paid the price for it,” said Terzoglou.
Next, Old Trinity has a date with Beaumaris, the Sharks having put two wins together after a three-game losing skid with an encouraging defeat of Old Geelong at home. Josh Bourke’s side lead the chasing pack of three teams with 4-4 records sitting sixth, seventh and eighth in a competition the Sharks coach describes as “the bizarrest in the world”.
It’ll be a story of well-timed runs and availability in the second phase of the season - and Beaumaris, with their five VAFA’s Big V Premier B-Division 3 Men’s squad representatives (Callum Heath, Joe Nowell, Riley Virtue, Riley Mihailovic and Callum Linehan) are as well positioned as any.
Heath - a “man-mountain” in the ruck - made hay without ruck partner in crime Jack Sheridan for Old Geelong, stamping his credentials as one of the premier big men in the competition. “Not only is he a very handy ruckman, but his marking around the ground is probably second to none in the comp,” said Bourke.
Beaumaris booted four goals to two in the second quarter to take a slender lead into the long break. They remained in front despite booting five successive behinds to finish the third term, then booted six goals in a row in the final term to kill off any chance of an Old Geelong comeback. Jai Florent, Petar Pecer and Luka Pecer were a few of the Sharks’ best, while Harrison Kol and Michael Nicholls continued their standout seasons for Nathan Brown’s unit.
“Beaumaris was really impressive,” said Brown. “They were better than us all day, but our boys showed great fight to get close by three quarter time.”
Old Haileybury’s hold on first spot on the ladder will continue in the week off, the Bloods starting hot then doing enough to hold off Old Ivanhoe at Chelsworth Park.
Jarrod Gieschen’s men were left to rue a tardy first quarter, conceding four goals in the first six-and-a-half-minutes and giving up a 33-point lead before Seamus Gibbs kicked their first goal. “That was the margin at the end of the day,” said Gieschen of the frantic start - the Bloods running out 24-point winners, 13.9 (87) to 9.9 (63). “(The result) shows we have some work to do to match it with the benchmark team, but we aren’t too far off,” he said.
Harrison Reid continued a strong month of footy, while Michael Mitris kicked two goals - ultimately, the Hoers left themselves too much to do and thus finish the first two months of the season in fifth position.
For Daniel Ward, the last month-and-a-half has been the perfect tonic to slow start to 2024. “After a 0-2 start, to win the next six has been pleasing,” he said Mattias Rose and Noah Higgins impressed from their respective wings, while Ward found goalkickers in Lachie Vaughan with three, as Will Abraham and Andreas Stefanakis each slotted two.
After the break, they’ll take on second-placed Old Camberwell, who match the Bloods at a 6-2 record after escaping a Caulfield Grammarians comeback at Gordon Barnard Reserve. A fourgoal run before half time saw the Wellers lead by 26 points at the long break - but the Grammarians responded strongly, putting up 5.2 (32) to 0.3 (3) in the third term to take a narrow lead.
In a tight final term with just two goals kicked, an outstanding individual effort from Harry McColl deep inside 50 gave the Wellers a one-point lead at the 16-minute mark - McColl swooping on a loose football and snapping across his body to kick his second goal of the afternoon. In the final ten minutes of the game the Grammarians were unable to control possession, entering their forward fifty just once, where Josh Hutchings was unable to convert a set shot.
The 7.14 (56) to 8.4 (52) victory places Old Camberwell a game clear in second - but Old Trinity and De La Salle both possess a superior percentage in third and fourth. After the break, Caulfield Grammarians will face Old Ivanhoe back at Glen Huntly Park, while Old Geelong host De La Salle at Como Park.
The top of the table clash between Old Haileybury’s and the Wellers highlights Round Nine, with the winner’s moving a game clear on top. While at the other end of the ladder, St Bedes/ Mentone will back itself for a maiden win against Williamstown CYMS at Fearon Reserve. Finally, Beaumaris has a chance to return to the top four when it faces Old Trinity at Daley Oval.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S
Kylie LynchTeams jockey for top spots as the VAFA season reaches halfway mark
As the VAFA season reaches its midpoint, the Premier B Women’s remains a fiercely contested competition, with the mid-table teams fighting to climb the ladder to secure their ticket to play finals.
The undefeated Williamstown CYMS remain ahead of the pack, with Old Geelong and Fitzroy trailing with only one and two losses to date, respectively. Beaumaris and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers remain neck and neck on 16 points, having both won and lost four games apiece. Old Xaverians, Westbourne Grammarians, and Aquinas will need a strong second half of the season to climb the ranks to secure their spot in finals.
Old Geelong emerged victorious against Aquinas over the weekend, showcasing their dominance and tactical prowess on the field. Their lead was solidified by impressive performances from Tessa Longden and Matilda Arthur, each contributing three goals.
Despite Aquinas’ commendable defensive pressure, which forced Old Geelong to kick 11 behinds, Old Geelong’s offensive strength proved overwhelming. Aquinas struggled to break through and failed to put a goal on the board.
The final score reflected Old Geelong’s dominance, finishing at 11.11 (77) to 0.2 (2). This commanding win highlights Old Geelong’s form as they continue their campaign in VAFA Prem B Women’s.
Williamstown CYMS added another week to their undefeated streak with a commanding victory over Beaumaris, finishing with a score of 9.4 (58) to 1.3 (9). The CY’s dominated the game from the start, showcasing their superior skills and teamwork. The standout player for Williamstown was Loren Mills, who delivered a spectacular performance, kicking five goals.
Beaumaris struggled to penetrate Williamstown’s strong defence, managing only one goal throughout the match. This solitary goal was kicked by Poppy Morris in the second quarter, offering a brief moment of reprieve for the away side. Despite their efforts, Beaumaris was unable to match the intensity and skill of Williamstown, who controlled the game with precision and efficiency.
Fitzroy showcased a dominant performance against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, kicking five goals in the first quarter. This early surge set the tone for the match, as Fitzroy’s offensive and defensive efforts kept St Bedes/ Mentone scoreless for most of the game.
Fitzroy coach Nathan Jumeau says “Getting started right from the first bounce has been something we’ve struggled with early in the season and the players have really taken on themselves in wanting to get off to a good start. The last two weeks we’ve seemed to have turned the corner.”
Fitzroy’s players displayed excellent coordination and skill, consistently pressuring their opponents and maintaining control of the field. Chloe Haritopoulos, Robyn Randell, and Ester Boles kicked two goals each, showing the depth of Fitzroy’s offensive talent.
Jumeau says that in the “Second half of the year we’re really looking to expand on our game, now that our new and younger players have become accustomed to senior-level football. The push to get back up into the premier competition is something we will be working hard to achieve.”
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers struggled to find their footing against Fitzroy’s formidable defence. It wasn’t until the final quarter that skipper, Maddi Wilson, kicked their sole goal for the game. Despite this late effort, it was not enough to turn the tide, and Fitzroy secured a decisive victory of 9.6 (60) to 1.2 (8).
In the most closely contested match of the round, Westbourne Grammarians edged out Old Xaverians with a final score of 4.8 (32) to 2.11 (23). The game started with Westbourne displaying a strong offensive front, kicking three goals in the first half, while Old Xaverians managed to score only one. Westbourne’s early dominance showcased their attacking prowess and set the stage for an intense battle.
Westbourne coach Ian Allan said it was a close match that could’ve gone either way.
“The team is really starting to think for each other, and we executed a good level of pressure for four quarters, which is what we have been working towards,” says Allan.
The second half saw a more balanced contest, with both teams kicking one goal each. Old Xaverians had more opportunities at goal throughout the match but failed to capitalise on key opportunities to close the margin, due to outstanding pressure from Westbourne.
Coach Allan said his side are really looking forward to the bye weekend as an opportunity to rest, reflect on the past 8-weeks, and analyse what has and hasn’t been working to give Westbourne the best chance of a successful second half of the season.
Round 9 of the Premier B Women’s competition promises thrilling encounters. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will face Aquinas, with both sides eager to bounce back from recent defeats.
Fitzroy, coming off a strong win, takes on Old Xaverians in what promises to be a tightly contested match. Beaumaris hosts Old Geelong, with the latter looking to maintain their winning momentum. Meanwhile, Westbourne Grammarians will challenge the undefeated Williamstown CYMS, aiming to end their remarkable streak.
As the season progresses, each match carries significant weight, with teams vying for crucial points in the race for the finals.

PREMIER C MEN’S
Raj JohnstonTop 4 flex muscles, extending their ladder ascendancy
Round 8 saw no surprises as the top four continued their rampage with dominant wins across the board. A fourth placed Hampton Rovers now sits two games clear of Mazenod in fifth, as the bottom six sides face an uphill challenge in the second half of the season to climb the ladder should they wish to have a crack at finals contention.
AJAX recorded a significant 82-point victory over Mazenod, which keeps their percentage strong, competing with a tight top order. Mazenod had a good start with the first two goals of the game, but the home side quickly retaliated with the next four majors to see themselves with a 16-point lead at quarter-time.
Things only worsened for the visitors in the second as the Jackas produced an 11-goal onslaught, with accuracy their virtue early on; 3 of those majors coming off the boot of Toby Sheezel to take a 57-point advantage into the main break.
Interestingly, AJAX went quiet in the third quarter, while Mazenod saw an opportunity to take back control, kicking 3 goals to narrow the margin. However, once again the final quarter belonged to AJAX with scoring shots aplenty kicking 7.8 to Mazenod’s 1.1. Inaccuracy from the home side in the late stages prevented the annihilation from being that much more damaging.
Richie Simon continued his stellar form with another 5 goals, which sees him chomping at the heels of Mitch Brown on the competitions leading goal kicker tally. Reece Israel, Aaron Bryer and Brad Caplan had influence around the ground for the home side, whilst Damian Byrne, Mitchel D’Angelo and Shaun Lovell each managed two goals for Mazenod and were best on in a tough loss.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon held onto a narrow 13-point victory over the Monash Blues in a tightly contested matchup. Whilst the Gryphons were the better side throughout the day, particularly in the first half, Monash didn’t go down without a fight and kept the pressure on until the final siren. The first quarter was low-scoring with one goal apiece, but it was the Gryphons who broke away in the second to lead by 9-points at half-time. The Blues had their chances in the second term to build a lead but inaccuracy in front of the big sticks proved costly for the home side.
Both sides kept each other well matched in the third quarter with the 9-point Gryphons lead enduring at the final change. Heading into the fourth quarter, it was clear that every scoring shot would matter. Monash kicked the first two goals to provide them with some hope, however, the Gryphons fired
back to get over the line and record their third win of the season.
The Hampton Rovers defeated Marcellin by 77 points at Trevor Barker. The Rovers had a brilliant start with four goals to one in the first quarter. Their dominance continued in the second term, manufacturing a 42-point lead by half-time.
Marcellin’s effort was rewarded in the third quarter as they contained the Rovers, only allowing them to kick three goals to their two, however, the Rovers ran away with it in the final term with six goals to comfortably get over the line.
Hampton’s skipper Christian Carnovale was back to his playing best, whilst young gun Joshua Docking had a standout performance with 3 goals and was rewarded with a Rising Star nomination. Jack Pekin and Elias Stapleton fought valiantly for Marcellin whilst Liam Atherton was their only dual goal scorer for the day.
This was an important game for both sides with the Rovers looking to compete with the top three sides while Marcellin were searching for their third win. Whilst this was a comfortable victory for the Rovers, inaccuracy has proven to be their vice this season, having scored more behinds than goals in nearly every match. In a tightly contested ladder, the impact on their percentage could prove costly of breaking into the top two come finals season.
Old Carey had a brilliant day out, demolishing Oakleigh by 184 points in a day to forget for the Krushers. The damage was done in the first quarter as Old Carey notched up a 50-point lead by quarter time, extending that to 93-points by the main break.
Oakleigh managed a goal in the third quarter, but it was little respite as Old Carey kicked seven goals in the third term. The assault on the scoreboard came from 12 individual goal scorers for Carey, while their defensive effort was also commendable, restricting the Krushers to just two majors.
The home side continued to boost their percentage right up until the final siren to finish just 3 points shy of cracking 200, in what was a tough day at the office for the winless Oakleigh.
Riley Thompson continued his stellar form with five goals for Old Carey, ably assisted by Jack Alexander, Trent Warren and Mitchell Wooffindin who each slotted four, while Thomas Horton was name best afield. At the other end Jackson McCahon led from the front in an uphill battle, whilst Luke Ashen and Tim Scott were responsible for hitting the scoreboard.
In what was perhaps the most anticipated match-up of the weekend, the Parkdale Vultures defeated PEGS by 20 points. Whilst the Vultures were the better side throughout the match by way of the scoreboard, PEGS brought pressure to the contest and were hungry for the footy. Their effort was evident.
Whilst PEGS put up a fight in the second half, ultimately, it was the Vultures who walked away with the four points to record their sixth consecutive win. Mitchell Baker-West, Blake Roach and Oscar Bales were among the best players for PEGS, whilst Harry Kilfoyle, Jarrod Peake and Cooper Howell starred for Parkdale.
Round 9 will see all sides fresh off the mid-season bye ready to make an impact in the second half of the season. It will be difficult to knock off any of the current top four teams, however if the results in Premier C have taught us anything this season, it’s that anything is possible.
The Hampton Rovers host Glen Eira/Old McKinnon. This will be an important game for the Rovers as they look to climb higher on the ladder, currently one win behind third spot.
PEGS host Marcellin in what should be a close game with both sides relatively well-matched. PEGS have the upper hand being one game clear of Marcellin, however, hold a 1-4 record at home this year which they’d be keen to improve.
The Parkdale Vultures host Old Carey in what shapes as an intriguing match-up between 1st and 2nd. Expecting a highscoring match here.
Meanwhile, Mazenod will meet the Monash Blues as the Blues look to climb from ninth spot, and Oakleigh, yet to record a win, face a tough assignment against AJAX.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Vale Ross BoothThe VAFA and the Victorian football community fondly remember Ross Booth, who passed away last week at the age of 72.
Ross enjoyed more than half a century of involvement with the VAFA, which began as a player for Monash Blues from 1971-76. He captained the Blues and was a two-time club Best & Fairest in 1973-74. He was equal third in the VAFA A-Section League Best & Fairest in 1973 and was runner-up in 1976 before joining University Blacks, where he played a further seven seasons from 1977-83.
“Not only was Ross an icon at Monash, so too was he a champion of the VAFA,” said Monash Blues President, Andrew Headberry. “Boothy was a fine footballer and a fine man. The Monash family will sorely miss him.”
Appointed as a VAFA Executive/Board Member in 1986, Ross served in that capacity for 25 years and was always an active contributor focused on helping the VAFA and the game more generally. Awarded VAFA Life Membership in 2003, Ross also served on the VAFA Life Membership Association Executive and was a much-loved member of the VAFA community.
VAFA President, Paul Newton said, “Ross made an enormous contribution, and his service was recognised with Life Membership of the Association in 2003. He will be fondly remembered by all those involved at the VAFA. On behalf of the VAFA Board, management and Association, we offer our deepest condolences to Ross’s family and friends.”
VAFA Life Members provided their reflections of the type of person Ross was:
“We will miss his friendliness and humour a great deal.” - Cliff and Mavis Bastow.
“A true gentleman, always willing to assist with no bother.” - Sue Anderson.
“A champion player at both club and state level. A truly great VAFA man.” - Andrew Langford-Jones.

Clubs unfurl 2023 Premiership Flags
In recent weeks, Parkside, Collegians, Williamstown CYMS and AJAX Football Clubs have all had flag unfurlings to celebrate their respective 2023 Premierships. It is always a momentous occasion to celebrate achieving the ultimate team success in football with the club and community by way of revealing the premiership flag.
VAFA launches new website
With no VAFA footy over the Kings Birthday long weekend, the focus has been online with the launch of the new VAFA website, as we head towards the mid-way point of the 2024 season. The brand-new VAFA.com.au is a completely new platform, built from the ground up, and represents a significant step forward in providing a superior online experience for the large VAFA community.
Club Connect Club of the Month – May
The Whitefriars Football Club have been awarded the VAFA Club Connect Club of the Month for May. The VAFA Club Connect Club of the Month award recognises a VAFA club who through its actions both on and off the field, best exhibits the values of the VAFA, namely Respect, Inclusive, Integrity and Community.
When told about the award, Club President Peter Ciardulli said “We are delighted to get this recognition. It is great acknowledgment for all our coaches, players, committee, and volunteers. We strive to be a great community club in a very competitive market, and I am thrilled that this has been recognised.”
The clubs nominated by VAFA Management in May were: Whitefriars, Chadstone, and Caulfield Grammarians.
FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Alice Wolfenden (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Alice Wolfenden from Glen Eira/Old McKinnon Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 8 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Alice has been impactful for the Gryphons since joining the squad this season and hits the scoreboard regularly on top of her influence around the ground.
What the Club said:
As a first-year player at Glen Eira/Old McKinnon, we have learned what an outstanding young person Alice is. Not only is she a star on the field, she is hugely popular off the field and really enjoys getting involved. Whether it’s helping out in canteen or running water for one of the other teams playing at Packer Park, Alice has made a wonderful impact in her short time at the club. We look forward to Alice starring in many more games and having a great time at our social functions for years to come.
Coach, Mel Kuys said, “It’s a huge achievement for one of our own Gryphs to be recognised for a Rising Star Nomination. Her hard work and dedication has paid off. Alice has come back to footy after years away from the sport. She has natural ability and a great pair of hands and kick. She has a huge future ahead.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Josh Docking (Hampton Rovers)
The VAFA congratulates Josh Docking from Hampton Rovers, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 8. Josh had a standout performance on the weekend, booting 3 goals.
What the club said:
Josh Docking has been a Hampton Rovers player since beginning his footy journey in Auskick at Boss James Reserve. He came through the club’s expansive junior program, while before representing the Sandringham Dragons in the AFL Talent League and Victoria Metro in the 2023 AFL National Championships. He missed the AFL Draft last year and was then signed by VFL Club Sandringham Zebras as one of their 2024 listed players.
He has been available for selection for the Rovers three times this season, playing well on all three occasions and kicking six goals in the past two matches. He is a very lively, quick and skilful player who adds to the side with great energy.
Josh is a very relaxed and quietly confident character with a great balance in life – currently studying at university. A Hampton Rovers person through and through, a great talent and wonderful family. The club congratulates him on his worthy Rising Star nomination as he continues to develop as a footballer.

DIVISION 1 MEN’S
Liam ColeOrmond come from behind in a thriller as Prahran flex their muscles
Round 8 has further cemented the strength of some top sides in Division 1 Men’s forming a clear top 4 as we near the halfway point of the competition. The bye round coming up will deliver some much-needed respite to those clubs bleeding defeats, with a reinvigorated mentality and drive heading into the next few rounds.
Parkside got the job done at home against a competitive Old Yarra Cobras side by 47 points. It was a tight first half with both teams able to transition the ball well from their defensive half led by Old Yarra Cobras halfback Matthew Young. However, the Devils were able to be more efficient going inside 50 in the first quarter which included a ripper goal from the boundary by Matt Holden.
For the majority of the first half the Devils just had the extra polish with Matt Holden leading the charge with some great ball use in the backline. Two goals in a row from the Old Yarra Cobras gave them some energy with a manageable deficit of 20 points at half-time. It hasn’t been the ideal start of the season for the Old Yarra Cobras, but you couldn›t question their effort with the likes of Jack Hall and Anthony Raso being strong targets up forward all day.
After half-time the rain started bucketing down, resulting in a goalless third term. In the fourth, it looked like the Old Yarra Cobras spent all their petrol tickets with Devils midfielder Benedict Douglas showing why he’s one of the best players in the competition kicking three goals to give the Devils a strong buffer.
UHS-VU got over the line in a scrappy affair against the West Brunswick Magpies by 15 points. The Magpies really took it up to one of the premiership fancies, using the wet-weather conditions to play to their strengths – contested footy. Magpies’ midfielder and skipper Emlyn Nettleton had a great game against a very strong Vultures midfield as his side trailed by 17 points at quarter-time. The Vultures were extremely wasteful in front of goal in comparison to the Magpies who moved the ball well with the help of Lee Stringer across the half-back line which helped his side draw level at half-time.
This game had multiple lead changes, but it was the Magpies who put their foot down after the main break, connecting inside 50 and applying some much-needed scoreboard pressure, something the Vultures haven’t had to deal with too much this season. Magpies forward
William Dillon had a strong game kicking the three goals for the day as his side had a nine-point lead at threequarter time.
In the last term, the Vultures showed their maturity with Brandon Jackson kicking three goals in the last quarter to help the side stay undefeated.
Prahran had a dismissive win over Old Peninsula by 68 points at Dallas Brooks Park. Coming into this game Prahran hadn’t had the best of records playing on the Peninsula but was determined to perform.
From the first bounce the pressure and ferocity around the contest was impressive starting from the top in ruckman Rory Brodie and Oliver Burke having a great game in the midfield kicking three majors. Prahran midfielder Jonathon Simonetta’s great form continues, kicking three goals proving his side has some great depth in the midfield. It was a wasteful day for the Pirates as defender Nathaniel Turner stood tall in busy times.
Victoria Park saw the best game of the round as Ormond came from behind again this season to beat the Kew Bears by four points. The Bears connection inside their forward 50 was a highlight for them with both Ned Ward and Ned Waters kicking three goals while William Llewelyn slotted four. Their accuracy early on, propelled the Bears to take a 17-point advantage into the final change.
With five minutes of play remaining in the contest and a 21-point buffer going the way of Kew, the Bears thought they had the win in the bag, but Ormond had other ideas. The straight-forward plan of getting the ball forward quickly was the key and put the Bears’ defence under the pump.
Ormond midfielder Sam Mason had a huge last quarter and in the dying moments of the game took a huge intercept mark in the defensive 50. Sam was wellsupported by Will Drummond who had a superb last term and is becoming a very difficult matchup. The Monders flew home with the victory in tow by a mere 4 points.
The Preston Bullants got a much-deserved win over Therry Penola by 40 points in Round 8. The Preston Bullants engine room who have been playing some really strong football got on top of Therry, with Hugo Byron
and Rory Howard stepping up for their side. Therry Penola struggled to get on the scoreboard most of the day with Thomas Boddy being a strong inclusion to the side.
Meanwhile, in the last term the Preston Bullants surged to victory with a seven to two goal quarter. Therry Penola defender Jack Ford had an impressive performance keeping captain/coach Tom Hill goalless.
Round 9 should entail 10 sides fit and firing ff the back of this weekend’s bye round, while it’s a good opportunity for teams to get some players back from injury.
Ormond are back at home against the Pirates who will be looking to respond. We expect a high-pressure game from Old Peninsula in what will be a huge match for their top four hopes.
Prahran are taking on Therry Penola at DW Lucas Oval. Prahran are starting to get their game together nicely and if they match their intensity from last week’s win, they’re going to be tough to beat.
Kew has another big challenge against the top of the table UHS-VU. The solid Bears’ forward line will definitely test the Vultures defence at Brens Oval.
The West Brunswick Magpies are at home against Parkside where the midfield battle will be crucial. Benedict Douglas continues to cause havoc for opposition midfielders and might need some attention to help nullify him.
The Preston Bullants face the Old Yarra Cobras in what is a must-win game for both sides. The pressure from the Old Yarra Cobras was a real standout on Saturday and they will need to find another gear as they take on a tough midfield.

Annie IrelandReigning premiers bounce back to issue a warning to the competition
Marcellin reminded the competition why they are the reigning premiers on the weekend, bouncing back from a tough loss to Old Brighton last weekend with a 62-point win over the Parkdale Vultures. There is now a large gap between third and fourth place, with two games separating Marcellin and Parkdale. The top three in Brighton, Collegians, and Marcellin continue to dominate, whilst the bottom half of the ladder are producing mixed results.
Despite facing a much-improved Parkdale Vultures, Marcellin returned to form with their impressive victory, their accurate kicking in the second half seeing them fire away to their sixth win of the season and stay level with Collegians on the ladder. The win also keeps them in check with first place, albeit Old Brighton are still undefeated and two wins ahead.
It was a tough day for Parkdale, scoring only one goal for the game via Jenna Wale in the first quarter. It was grim for the women from then on, with only a singular point scored after quarter time. Marcellin were inaccurate in the first half, keeping Parkdale in the game. However, a 6.6 second half powered them to victory.
Zoe Glascott added to her growing goal tally, contributing three of her own. Despite her impressive performance it was Stephanie Bridge who was best on, along with Charlotte McGilp, Alana Pane and Annabel Scott.
Next up, Marcellin will face Collegians when both teams come off the bye from the King’s Birthday long weekend. Parkdale will host Old Melburnians.
Old Brighton continued their undefeated streak with another big win, this time over Old Melburnians by 25 points on Saturday morning. Old Melburnians remain with just one win for the season at bottom of the ladder, two wins behind Old Haileybury in fifth place. Very much like other games this round, it was a very even first half, with Brighton only leading by seven points at the main change.
The third quarter was a very different game, with Brighton charging ahead, kicking 4.2 to Melburnians 1.1. It’s named the premiership quarter for a reason, with Brighton demonstrating that this is where the game can be won or lost.
Once again, Lily, Jasmine and India Tait were all in the best on field, Lily Tait with two goals to her name. Co-captain Caterina O’Brien was also impressive, with three goals of her own. Clare Fraser was best on for Old Melburnians.
After the bye, Melburnians will play Parkdale, whilst Old Brighton will travel to play Old Haileybury.
Collegians solidified dominance in the league since their elevation to the Division 1 competition, with a 34-point win over Old Haileybury. Haileybury now sits in fifth on the ladder, a game behind Parkdale in fourth.
The game was never really on Haileybury’s terms, who were limited to 1.4 in the first half and only two goals for the second half. Comparatively, Collegians scored 5.4 in the second half to cement their win. Eliza Main was best on ground for Haileybury, whilst Serene Vudiniabola had two goals in the low scoring affair.
Collegians did not list their goal scorers at the time of writing. Ashlee Ladson, Josephine Muscat, and Chelsea McDermott were the top three for Collegians.
In Round Nine, Collegians will play Marcellin. It looms as a massive game, with the winner to move into outright second, breaking free of the third placed team and a game closer to Old Brighton on top of the ladder.
Old Haileybury will host Old Brighton at Princes Park Caulfield.
All six teams will enjoy a well-deserved weekend off as they look to freshen up for the second half of the season. The competition will resume on Saturday 15 June.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S
Jainarayan TiwariDivision 2 ladder settles ahead of the bye
The thrill escalates as Round 8 of Division 2 concludes with electrifying and balanced performances by all the teams, making the competition more challenging week by week.
The table toppers Brunswick emphasise their firm grip over the competition table, this time defeating Whitefriars by 15 points at the Gillon Oval. The Nobs are known to rampage, leaving little opportunity for their opponents to get a foot in the game, but the Friars looked solid in the contest, challenging the Nobs throughout the four quarters.
Despite an early lead to Brunswick, Whitefriars took charge in the third, scoring 4.5 to get their side within 13 points heading into the final change. Brunswick did what they do best and swung momentum back in their favour to run out victors for the 8th straight time this season.
Brunswick’s Hayden Parker once again kicked a hattrick of goals, while Angus Coverdale had 4 goals of his own. From Whitefriars, Nicholas Garratt and Lucas Zita kicked 4 goals together, but they still fell short in the end.
Even though Whitefriars lost the game, their coach, Luc Matthews, was positive and said, “Brunswick are a good side, and we tried our best. Our players were trying to clear the ball as much as they could. We missed a few chances, and some crucial turnovers cost us the game.”
In a solid showdown at Melbourne High School, MHSOB clinched a stunning victory over Bulleen Templestowe by 43 points. Whilst the final margin indicates a dominant performance by the Unicorns, the contest was tight right up until the fourth term with the scoreboard reflecting the tight tussle. Both teams played like they were here to outplay each other, and it was unpredictable who would win until put their foot down to give their all or nothing in the fourth and decisive quarter.
After the third quarter, MHSOB only had a slight lead of 12 points. In the fourth quarter, MHSOB’s forwards and defence played like beasts, and it was unexpected to have a final score of 142 to 99.
MHSOB’s Brendan Cook was the player of the match as he booted in 7 goals, including 2 crucial goals in the fourth quarter. Mathew Pereira also kicked 6 goals to
support Brendan Cook. Meanwhile, Corey Shiels and Ashwyn Mohandas of Bullants kicked 8 goals for their team.
After the game, MHSOB’s coach, Bernie Pretty, said, “It was a competitive game, and the opposition was really tough. In the final quarter, the boys executed the instructions well and pressured the opposition to win the contest.”
Elsternwick defeated the home team, Aquinas, by 23 points, ending the game with a final score of 100-77 at Aquinas College.
The hosts, Aquinas, lagged in the first two quarters but managed to gain momentum in the third quarter, narrowing the point difference to just 7.
However, a dominant fourth quarter saw the Wickers pull ahead decisively in the contest. Elsternwick’s Quinn De Luca kicked 4 goals, and to support him, Daniel Marchese and vice-captain Spencer Hankin booted in 6 goals for their team.
After the game, Elsternwick’s coach, Peter Higginbotham, said, “The players are confident in their ability to run out a game and finish strongly, which has been evident in most games this year.”
As the fourth consecutive defeat looms over Aquinas in Division 2, the competition intensifies the pressure on their team.
St Mary’s Salesian, who were struggling in the initial stage of the competition, are now becoming the team to watch out for. This time, St Mary’s defeated Hawthorn by 41 points at the Rathmines Road Reserve.
St Mary’s forwards and defensive players supported each other from the first quarter, creating pressure against the Hawks.
St Mary’s had a decent lead of 23 points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, they didn’t let the Hawks take possession. In the fourth quarter, the Hawks gave their everything, but it was too late, and the final score was St Mary’s at 133, whereas Hawthorn at 92.
Overall, St Mary’s aggressive team effort led them to victory. St Mary’s Lachlan Russell had a splendid show, booting 4 goals. Hawthorn’s Justin Raiti also kicked 4 goals, but the team effort wasn’t enough to take the team towards the victory.
The South Melbourne Districts fought hard for a gritty 10-point victory over Wattle Park in a tough Division 2 encounter. The final scoreline read 69-59, reflecting the contested nature of the game, with multiple lead changes.
South Melbourne had a 19-point lead by the end of the first quarter, but the Animals made a terrific comeback in the second quarter to take a 4-point advantage into the main break.
It was a competitive game. South Melbourne again took a 10-point lead in the third quarter and maintained that small lead in the fourth quarter, leading them to victory.
South Melbourne’s Zaron Smith and Leigh Sfetkidis each scored a couple of goals, adding to their team’s impressive performance on the field. Wattle Park’s Daniel Hill kicked 2 goals for his team.
The ninth round will commence on June 15, so all the teams will have a week’s break. Coming back off the bye round, South Melbourne will face MHSOB, and both teams are currently on a winning streak. Whitefriars will play against Aquinas at the Whitefriars College Oval.
The competitive St Mary’s Salesian will play against Elsternwick, and Hawthorn will face the mighty Brunswick. At Ted Ajani Reserve, Bulleen Templestowe will be challenging Wattle Park; a game to watch out for.

MillerGlen Eira back on top, as Richmond win on the road
Power House produced a percentage boosting victory over a winless Mazenod in Round 8 to propel them up to second rung, just four points behind the new ladder leaders in Glen Eira/Old McKinnon. Meanwhile, Oakleigh, Whitefriars, and Richmond Central all made their way back onto the winners list just ahead of the bye.
Hawthorn held their annual Wings Round on the weekend to bring greater awareness to the importance of Mental Health. Whilst this was a successful day for their club and community, it was not to be on the scoreboard, with Richmond Central defeating the Hawks by 22 points.
Things got off to a slow start on a crisp Saturday morning at Rathmines Road Reserve with scores level at a goal apiece heading into the first change. Richmond took control in the second to further their cause whilst holding Hawthorn to a single point with a strong defensive effort. The Snakes soared to the finish line with an epic 3-goal final term.
Ann-Marie Geary kicked 2 goals for the visitors and was acknowledged as the best on ground, whilst Hawthorn vice-captain Emogen Johnson starred for her side in a tough match, finishing with a goal to her name as well.
In an important middle-order clash between Oakleigh and Old Trinity, the Krushers took their chances, with the 42-15 victory resulting in a leapfrog into fourth spot. Oakleigh hit the scoreboard early and had the upper hand right from the outset.
Trinity’s first goal came late in the third quarter and the deficit sustained to that point was too significant to overcome. Old Trinity is known for their competitive spirit, however, will need to prove they are capable of beating the top performing sides should they wish to see finals action.
Kaitlyn Sidopoulos stole the show for the Krushers, booting four or their six goals for the match. Rachel Douglas and Bianca Vuetibau joined the star forward, delivering their own stand out performances, to earn a spot in the best.
It was demolition derby at Ross Gregory Oval, with Power House manufacturing a full throttle rampage over Mazenod. The home side walked away on 71 points, whilst conceding just a single goal for the match. Their connection around the ground proved a treat for their forwards who took their chances in front of the big sticks, slotting 10.11.
It was a day out for Kayla Slattery who unleashed in front of goals with 5 majors, whilst Ella Camerotto was responsible for the lone score for the visitors.
Despite being up 44 to zip heading into the final term, Power House showed no signs of slowing down, wanting to finish strong, whilst understanding the importance of percentage with a close top order. The 65-point victory has them placed comfortably in second with.
The Hampton Rovers have been in form with 3 wins on the trot, however, that came to a steady halt on the weekend when they were upset by a determined Whitefriars outfit. Although the Rovers had an early lead, scores were level at 8-all at the main break.
The premiership quarter proved to be the defining factor with a 2-goal to 1 differential giving the Whitefriars a slight edge over a formidable opponent. The Friars did well to keep their cool in the final term, maintaining their lead, securing a much-needed victory in a tight contest.
There was just one goal in it at the final siren with Caitlin Ryan leading the charge for the Whitefriars with 2 majors. For the Rovers, Maegan Miller was their leading goal kicker once again with 2, furthering her campaign as the competition’s overall leading goal scorer.
Toni Robb and Rhiann Sterry, two veterans of the Whitefriars women’s squad, both lead from the front in their side’s Round 8 victory with notable performances. Glen Eira/Old McKinnon got the better of Old Camberwell/AJAX in their Saturday afternoon fixture, but strong pressure from the home side prevented a blowout result.
The Gryphons have shown they are a team to beat and have delivered a host of cohesive performances as a
squad, placing them in good stead for the back half of the season. On a number of occasions, they have been plagued by inaccuracy in front of goals, which will be an area of their game they’ll look to improve.
The Gryphons kicked 3.8, off the boots of three individual goal kickers (Julia Pavlou, Zoe Rossiter, and Alice Woldenden), to Old Camberwell/AJAX’s single straight kick. The 20-point final margin reflected the nature of the contest and the tight defensive efforts of both sides.
AJAX, who comprise half of the Old Camberwell/AJAX women’s team this season, preceded the match with a flag unfurling of their 2023 Division 3 Premiership flag.
At the half way mark of the competition, finals contenders are beginning to take shape. With 8 rounds of football to be played there is still time for the underdogs to claw their way up and make a bid for a spot in that illustrious top 4.
Coming back off the league-wide bye, Hawthorn remains at home as they come up against a high-flying Whitefriars in what should be an evenly matched contest. Meanwhile, Old Trinity will have their work cut out for them in an all-important clash, as they travel to face an in-form Power House at Ross Gregory Oval.
Over at Kevin Bartlett Reserve, Richmond Central take on Oakleigh, with both sides coming off strong wins. This match will be a must-win for the Snakes if they want to make their move for finals contention.
Hampton Rovers will host Old Camberwell/AJAX, whilst Glen Eira/Old McKinnon will take on Mazenod who are still searching for their first victory of the season.

Callum FarquharUpsets shake the Div 3 ladder, as Bulls and Cobras continue to dominate
Three underdog victories highlight a stunning weekend of Division 3 action, as all teams head into the King’s Birthday bye with plenty to analyse.
Any team can win on any given day, and that was emphasised through the gritty low-scoring victory by Albert Park over La Trobe University. Sitting eighth leading into this match, the Falcons were clear underdogs as they travelled out to La Trobe’s home fortress. However, the Falcons jumped La Trobe at the start, and never gave way in a defiant victory that breathes life back into their season.
Albert Park head into the first break with a 14-point lead, but La Trobe fought tooth-and-nail to work their way back, as the Falcons clung to a three-quarter-time margin of four points.
As wet conditions waterlogged the football, scoring became rare for either side. Inaccuracy and a slippery football meant no goals were scored in the last quarter, the Falcons holding on by seven.
La Trobe’s “disappointing” performance sees them drop to seventh on the ladder, and two wins outside the top five.
“They got the jump on us early with the breeze, and then it rained and made the game a slog,” La Trobe coach Andy Castles said.
“[We] had the momentum in the last quarter but couldn’t get any quality entries with the wet ball.”
Albert Park sits two wins from a finals position, as Alby Evans, Bryce Aggiss and Felix Metz were best on.
Canterbury have annihilated Eley Park by a whopping 213 points, as their impressive run of form continues. The Cobras opened the match with 11 first-quarter goals to zero, but their defence was equally as remarkable, constricting the Sharks to just three behinds at halftime.
Canterbury continued to pile on the goals in the second half, strolling to a victory of 39.13 (247) to 4.10 (34).
Tom Lowden (10) and Jayden Cutts (8) combined for a dazzling 18 goals, earning them best-on-ground nominations.
Ben Field and Joel Kennedy were amongst Eley Park’s best, as a stoic Andrew Davies and Thomas Johnston found the scoreboard.
After a second consecutive 200-point drubbing, Eley Park have time to regroup, embracing a double-bye that includes the King’s Birthday weekend and Round 9.
In a mouthwatering clash, St John’s stunned Power House at their home turf, rebounding after a heartbreaking loss to Canterbury last week.
The JOC’s were down by 15 early on, but three straight goals by Matthew Carnelley gave St John’s a slim threepoint advantage at quarter-time.
Six goals to zero erased the JOC’s slow-start in the second term, as Power House looked unrecognisable, struggling with goal accuracy in the third term. Ultimately, St John’s motored away to a 55-point win.
St John’s coach Tim Edwards was “really proud” of his side’s performance.
“I asked for a response after we were really flat the week before and they gave me that,” Edwards said.
“I think we have shown patches of what we can do so far this year but yesterday was a more complete game from us. We needed a scalp for our own belief… and getting a good win on the road will do wonders for our confidence.”
Corey Ely and Callum Houghton were St John’s best performers, as Matthew Carnelley snagged six majors.
Tyler Ames and Scott Shier were excellent for Power House despite the loss. They have the chance to bounce back after the bye week against the winless Box Hill North.
North Brunswick are effectively two games clear on top of the table after their 145-point smashing of Box Hill
North. A seven-goal opening term set the tone, however the Bulls were slightly held back in a defiant second quarter from the Demons, where they only managed one major.
The floodgates burst open in the third, the Bulls rampaging with a 10-goal effort. A scoreless final term for the Demons added salt to the wound as North Brunswick ran out winners, 24.16 (160) to 2.3 (15).
Fletcher Banfield, Oliver Widdicombe were best on for the Bulls as Daniel Rafferty and Luke Russell kicked four each.
Still winless after eight rounds, the Demons will aim to recharge over the King’s Birthday bye.
Richmond Central have kept their season alive in an enthralling 22-point win over Swinburne University.
Heading into the match in seventh place, this match was a must-win for the Snakes’ season. As expected, the game was a gritty, doggedly fought contest.
Swinburne opened with a quarter-time lead of four after a back-and-forth first term. The Snakes snatched the lead back within 13 seconds of the second quarter, before an 18-minute goalless period ensued. Swinburne’s Aidan Vesty kicked a late goal that tightened the score at halftime, the Snakes leading by seven.
Slowly but surely though, the game opened up for Richmond Central. A high-scoring final term assisted them in securing their fourth win of the season, as they close in on a finals position.
Jack Bilson’s four goals earned him BOG honours for Richmond Central, as Jason Hawker was Swinburne’s best in the midfield.
All clubs now have a bye, with focus on the following Round 9 fixture.
Chadstone host St John’s, Albert Park look to upset the unbeaten North Brunswick, and Box Hill North accommodate Power House.
La Trobe and Richmond Central will do battle in Round 9’s most eye-catching match-up. La Trobe’s three-game losing streak has upended their start to the season, and both clubs sit on the brink of a top-five spot.
Another intriguing clash of Canterbury versus Swinburne closes out the round. Eley Park have the bye.

SBMT edge University Blues, while Old Xaverians’ comeback seals victory
We are officially at the half way mark of the Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition and it is a tight race to the top. Round 9 in a nutshell: St Bedes/Mentone Tigers are one-point victors under Friday night lights, Old Xaverians survive and early scare, and Old Scotch impress.
The opening matchup of the round, a stand-alone contest on Friday night between St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and University Blues, was nothing short of a thriller in the Holmesglen Under 19’s competition.
Shooting out to an early three-goal buffer, SBMT held a strong lead for a majority of the opening half, running hot under the bright lights of Mentone Reserve. University Blues, strangled by the Tigers defence for a majority of the matchup, entered the final term trailing by 11 points.
Quarter four saw each team fighting tooth and nail for possession. The Blues pressed forward with relentless aggression, testing the mettle of the St Bedes/Mentone backline.
Lachlan Rees and Johnny Pring drove the comeback for University, orchestrating some exciting plays resulting in timely goals. Entering the dying stages of the contest, the Tigers clung to a measly one-point lead. University Blues, despite their assault, would reach the final siren shorthanded.
St Bedes/Mentone would register a famous victory on home turf, surviving a late scare from their opposition. Ethan Hall stood tall in the win, whilst Curtis Howe, Finn Chandler, Oliver Griffin, Liam Bowles and Lukas Ritter were pivotal to the cause.
Round 9 would continue into Saturday, where other exciting matches took place. Caulfield Grammarians recorded a much-needed victory over Beaumaris in the second game of the weekend schedule.
Offering up a five-point lead to the sharks at the conclusion of the opening quarter, the Grammarians reclaimed the lead early in the second. They soon began to fire on all fronts, winning individual contests throughout each area of the ground to enter the half time break with a 20-point lead.
Lachlan Lawrence, Callum Hankin, Tommy Warner impressed throughout the remainder of the game, guiding Caulfield to a resounding 50-point win.
For the Sharks, a lacklustre second half would prove to be their undoing. Mitchell Davidson, Jacob Whitehouse, George Lewis, Mason Cartwright and Flynn Groves shone whilst Max Newman-Morris was a handful for the opposition, kicking four.
Later in the schedule, Old Scotch handled De La Salle with relative ease. After a close first quarter, Old Scotch piled on the hurt to their opposition, keeping them goalless for a large majority of the game, whilst converting in front of goal themselves.
It was Spencer Hunter and James Davies who spearheaded the Old Scotch attack, concluding the game with four goals each. Finn Nankervis continued his spectacular form, whilst Lachie Harker, Will Hucker and Freddie Leeton were prolific.
De La Salle, after an impressive few weeks, disappointed throughout the day, having their obvious struggles in front of goal. Ashley Margerison, Ethan MacBeth and Joshua Stewart toiled hard.
Registering obvious improvement throughout the season, De La Salle will look with optimism to the second half of the year.
In another contest, Old Brighton endured a scare, outlasting an impressive Williamstown CYMS outfit at Fearon Reserve to win by 15 points.
Contrary to ladder positions, Williamstown CYMS put in a performance that would thoroughly test the might of Old Brighton. The ladder-leaders were challenged in every facet of the game, Williamstown proving their ability to rise to the fierce intensity of the contest.
Entering the final quarter with scores level, it would be an exciting conclusion to an invigorating tussle for premiership points. Despite an impressive performance from Williamstown, Old Brighton flexed their muscle in the final term to scamper away as victors.
Samuel Shepherd showcased his skill throughout the game for Williamstown, with Liam Taylor, Charlie Norris, Blake Tenaglia, Levi Cossey and Isaac Gawne performing well.
For the victors, Sam Litis drove the victory, with James Clarkson, Maxwell Langworthy, Lachlan McCluskey, Kai Vivian and Thomas Marriott a valuable supporting cast.
All exciting contests in Round 9, the rousing weekend of football would be headlined by an incredible contest taking place at Stradbroke park: a top of the table clash that saw Old Xaverians mount a last quarter comeback to surpass St Kevin’s
Leading for a majority of the contest, St Kevin’s looked primed to register an outstanding victory against the old foe. A 14-point lead entering the final term gave confidence to St Kevin’s supporters.
Old Xavs, having been extremely impressive in previous weeks and a large majority of the season, would apply their skill to the dying stages of the contest to orchestrate a resounding comeback victory, slotting a handful of final-quarter goals to edge in front and claim victory. Charlie Bourne, Atticus Scally and Tom Bourne were pronounced best afield for the victors, standing tallest in the win.
St Kevin’s will enter the bye round with a tinge of disappointment having let the game slip in the final moments. Oscar white was excellent throughout the game, with Xavier Duke and Liam Edwards also impressing.
With nine rounds in the books in the Holmesglen Under 19’s Premier competition, Old Brighton remain atop the ladder standings, with Old Xaverians and Old Scotch slightly behind. As finals football rapidly approaches, wins become increasingly more pivotal in the race for premiership silverware.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Nick Dimarco (North Brunswick AFC)
50
50
Well done Nick on reaching your first milestone! A no nonsense, hardnosed running tackling machine. This season his had added goal kicking to his bag of tricks. One of the more popular players at The Bull Pit he will no doubt add to his games tally.
Bailey Scrivener (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
Congratulations ‘Scriv’ on reaching 50 games. Another ex-McKinnon Secondary College, Scriv has worked really hard to come back from a knee reconstruction to be a key cog in the reserves back six. A speedy back flanker and tough attack at the footy, we look forward to Scriv bursting out of the backline at Packer Park for many years to come.
Matthew Dal Santo (North Brunswick AFC)
100
Congratulations Matt on reaching this milestone! It has taken Matt a few years to reach due to injury and a sojourn overseas he has finally achieved his goal. A high leaping ruckman his appetite for the contest is hard to fault. A severe ankle injury in 2015 seemed to curtail his career but due to heart and perseverance his comeback is complete. All at Allard Park wish you well.
Jeremy Simon (Ormond)
150
Jezza began his football in Auskick and then played in every age group of the Ormond Juniors. He then progressed to the senior club where he played in the senior premiership in 2018 and in senior grand finals in 2013 and 2015. He was fortunate enough to have played most of his footy career with his brother, Henry. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond on reaching this milestone.
Matthew Lithgow (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
150
Congratulations Matty on reaching 150 games. Matty made his debut back in 2010 and is a man of great versatility. He’s played in the Senior, Reserves and Thirds teams and missed a number of games pursuing an amateur boxing career. Matty is also wonderful clubman who is always ready to lend a hand where required. A well-deserved milestone for a genuine rusted on Glen Eira legend!
