Since 2019, the impact of COVID has seen our registration numbers reduce by 11%, however we still had 75 teams participate across 10 sections this year. The Women’s participation is a key platform of our strategic plan and it is the aim for the competition to grow in 2023 to pre-Covid numbers and beyond.

Indeed, there were in excess of 100 VAFA women’s players on VFLW lists in 2022 which is a testament to the great strides and recognition of the standard of our players. Competitive balance remains a priority when establishing the sections each season and, as such, the first few weeks of the season are used as grading rounds.

Exciting times ahead.

EDITORIAL

I would like to acknowledge the terrific work of our CEO Mr. Jason Reddick, the VAFA administration team including Football & Umpiring GM Mr. Matt Collister and his team and all clubs. And in particular, to acknowledge the contribution of our media team, Cameron Voss, Joe Pignataro, and our women’s reporter, Kristin Sims.

A Celebration of Women’s Footy

Our women’s competition was launched in 2017 with 40 teams and 1,958 registered players. Our numbers have increased substantially since then with nearly 3,200 players for the 2019 season. The growth was remarkable and the VAFA is the largest women’s Australian Rules football competition in Australia.

Currently there are three females on the VAFA Board. Ex-Bayside City Council Mayor Ms. Felicity Frederico chairs the Governance SubCommittee and is responsible for the new constitution being developed for implementation in the near future in addition to other key categories.

Our key strategic partner in our women’s football programme has been William Buck who have also been great advocates in gender balance and diversity within the VAFA and to Lindsay Holloway and the team, sincere thanks for your ongoing support and acumen.

Ms. Vicki Durston is part of our Football Sub-Committee and Chairs the Women’s Football Section with Ms. Sarah Delbosc, who has brought current playing and coaching experience input to our planning and strategies for our women’s

In partnership with Sport and Recreation Victoria and VicHealth, the Roadmap is being delivered through the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation and aligns with Victoria’s Gender Equality Act 2020. It follows sector-wide consultation and will ensure that women and young girls can fully participate in and enjoy the benefits of community sport, with fair opportunity and access to their local facilities. The Roadmap features three key phases: education, readiness and progress. It is designed for local governments, sport and recreation organisations and other groups which manage publicly owned community sports infrastructure.

Good luck to everyone today.

Female Umpires is an area which we need to keep developing so as to encourage women’s participation, be it as field, boundary or goal umpires. We are very keen to promote women’s participation in umpiring and as such, the VAFA is pursuing opportunities to build a state-of-the-art complex at Elsternwick Park specifically for our umpires with female friendly facilities to encourage the recruitment, retention, development and enjoyment of female umpires.

In addition, the VAFA have the BJS Women Umpires Academy which assists in the coaching, support and networking of our Umpires. These sessions aim to assist our female umpires to develop and progress with their fitness, understanding and skills within the VAFA. A number of sessions feature guest speakers and specialised coaching which have been very fruitful with positive outcomes. Thanks to Simon Fanning and his team at BJS and of course to our VAFA GM Umpires Operations, Mr. Stephen Privitera.

Atcompetitions.present, many Victorian women and girls don’t get access to the best courts or grounds, or are relegated to lesser facilities, making it difficult for many to participate or reach their best. The Fair Access Policy Roadmap aims to develop a state-wide foundation to improve the access to, and use of, community sports infrastructure for women and girls. The VAFA is looking at including this landmark policy which Sarah Styles, Director of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, hopes will ensure community sporting environments are always welcoming, accessible and inclusive for everyone. Certainly these goals are aligned with those of the

Several premierships have already been determined in our various women’s sections and congratulations to Old Scotch and Monash Blues on winning the Premier B and Premier B Reserves flags, St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers on winning the two Premier C flags, and to Beaumaris, Hampton Rovers and MCC on being crowned premiers of our three Division Sections.

2024, all Victorian councils will need to ensure fair access to sporting facilities for people of all genders to be considered eligible to receive infrastructure funding.

Once the ball was back in the middle, St Kevin’s were looking to strike back but the pressure being applied by Caulfield was causing turnovers. Caulfield were using the ground to their advantage, running the ball along the wings and having repeat forward entries but were unable to score much-needed goals early to take advantage of their Aftermomentum.someearly running play, the game started to lock up, stoppages were frequent and Caulfield were pressuring St Kevin’s into mistakes all across the ground. The first goal for St Kevin’s was hard fought, coming from a scrappy contest after a stoppage. From here the backline of Caulfield began to feel the pressure but Charlie Anderson stood up to the occasion, picking off kicks across the wing and helping Caulfield to transition down field. A strong team effort from St Kevin’s in the dying minutes would result in them taking a small lead into the first break.

In the third term, St Kevin’s came out firing early. Forward Sarah Cameron stood tall after kicking a beautiful goal keeping the momentum with St Kevin’s early, Caulfield kept the pressure going in the third, but St Kevin’s showed their dominance and were able to stay a step ahead at the ball. As the quarter went on, St Kevin’s pushed harder and had all the answers to any attempt Caulfield had to move the ball forward to attack the goals. The pressure from St Kevin’s didn’t let up, the Caulfield defence was kept busy the whole third term, but they kept their heads up and continued to fight.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

It was a hotly contested start to the William Buck Premier Women’s Preliminary Final between St Kevin’s and Caulfield Grammarians, with both teams surrounding the ball and slowing down the play. Caulfield got an early run and were able to get the first goal of the game thanks to a free kick.

St Kevin’s class was on full display kicking ten unanswered goals before Caulfield were able to get one back. The offensive run from St Kevin’s did not slow down at all, their ability to find a teammate in space was helping them to continue to kick goals and extend their lead. Sarah Cameron was vital in the St Kevin’s forward line, kicking 6 goals for the day and using the ball to find teammates who could score when she couldn’t.

the attack of Caulfield, upping their pressure on the ball carrier and blocking Caulfield’s ability to transition the ball to their attack. Caulfield did have their chances after some good running play, they were unable to capitalise and impact the scoreboard and gain back some momentum. This would result in a goalless term for Caulfield, while St Kevin’s were able to take a strong lead into the main break, leading by 25 points.

The pressure from Caulfield did not slow down early in the second but St Kevin’s were able to use the ground well and find space to get the ball into their attacking fifty regularly. St Kevin’s would continue to limit

St Kevin’s stay alive after huge victory WOMEN’S PREVIEW

If the two teams had not met in the second week of the finals, it would be easy to pick St Kevin’s as the favourites based on regular season form and consistency. In this all-important match-up, Kew came away with a 9 point victory, this resulted in them getting a week’s rest while St Kevin’s faced off against Caulfield Grammarians the past weekend.

The Semi Final win is sure to have filled Kew with confidence that they can match St Kevin’s and get their hands on the Premiership cup. One vital area that St Kevin’s will need to focus on to get the victory is somehow dismantling the defensive wall that Kew has developed. This tactic has seen Kew stop forward entries for their opponents and lock the ball in their half of the ground.

Using all the options in their forward fifty, Caulfield could do nothing to stop the attack in the end. Despite the hot start, Caulfield were only able to manage one more goal for the entire game, which was a credit to the defensive pressure from St Kevin’s who were able to limit the opportunities Caulfield had to get near goals. The final siren sounded, confirming a 79-point victory for the SKOB Saints.

The strong finish for St Kevin’s will see them riding a wave of confidence into the biggest game of the year on Sunday when they take on Kew at Elsternwick Park.

Between the two teams, it has been a mixed bag of results when they have met during the 2022 season. In the first meeting, it was Kew who came away with a narrow victory and delivered the one and only loss for St Kevin’s in the regular season. Round 11 when they met again saw a 49-point win in favour of St Kevin’s.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

Predictions

If St Kevin’s can use their strength of running and finding space across the ground, they will be in a strong position to take the win. Also look for the battle in the middle of the ground, both teams have the ability to run out of contest, but also apply pressure and force turnovers. With both teams being so evenly matched it is hard to pick a winner. Either way it is going to be a cracking game of VAFA women’s football showcasing the very best of the competition.

5

For the final game of the year, the 2022 William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final, there really could not be any other two teams. They have sat in the top positions on the ladder for the entire year, and now the best two teams in the competition will face off on Sunday for the Premiership at VAFA HQ.

Premiers: St Kevin’s OB

Best on Ground: Sarah Cameron (St Kevin’s)

Margin: 16 points

St Kevin’s have been the dominant team for the entire season, finishing the home & away season as Minor Premiers, with a huge percentage thanks to their dominant wins across the season. Kew, finishing in second, suffered just two losses, one to Caulfield Grammarians in round two and to St Kevin’s in round 11.

The three goalkickers have also been prominent in the club’s best players throughout the year. Fans will be hoping they stand up in the clubs biggest game.

second home and away loss came against St Kevin’s in Round 11 and since then have won seven games in a row to book their spot in the Grand Final.

Isabelle and Michaela Harding have also been regulars, part of the best on ground brigade almost every time they step onto the fi eld. Selina Wilcot down in defence will have her work cut out for her, but if anyone can, it’s Wilcot.

Paige Trajkovski was nominated as the Rising Star back in Round 4. After winning a NAB League Grand Final earlier this year, she impressed on debut with the Bears walking away with plenty of the ball and a wellexecuted set shot goal. She has superb skills and a fi erce attack on the ball. This will be another opportunity to get another medal around her neck in the same calendar year.

As part of this seven win stretch they’ve conceded an astonishing 45 points. That is all. Keeping opposition sides to an average of 6.42 points per game. On the flipside, they’ve kicked 299 points themselves, an average of 42.7 points per game.

It’s been a year of consistency for Kew in 2022. A loss in Round 2 to Caulfi eld gave them the sting they needed, from there the Bears went on an eight game winning streak to set up their Theseason.club’s

GRAND FINAL CLUB REVIEW -

The most dominant side in William Buck Premier Women’s for the season. Five times this year they have kept the opposition goalless. They are ranked #1 for defence conceding 13.2 points per game. And, ranked #1 for attack averaging 63.4 points per game.

Leading Goalkickers

No one can stop Sarah Cameron. The captain of the club knows where the goals are, and has known her whole career. She comes into the game after kicking six in the Preliminary Final. Her season tally of 42 speaks volumes for her dominance up forward. Not to be dismissed is Margie Gleeson (20) and Tessa Boyd (20). If one, two or all three of these women get off the chain, they’re going to be hard to stop.

Bree Doyle is in line for team of the year honours. A staggering 15 times she’s featured in the best players from her 18 games this year. Chloe Brown, Eliza Stratford and Elyce Hay all can lay claim to also being high up in the best and fairest vote counts this year. Tom Purcell would say it’s a team effort that’s seeing his team be as dominant as they have been this year.

St Kevins reached the inaugural William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final in 2017. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be on that occasion. Is 2022 the year the trophy heads to T H King?

Emily Condon received her Rising Star nomination in Round 15 of the home and away season. It’s been an incredible climb after playing in the backline of the Women’s Thirds team in 2021. She has an uncanny ability to read the play, Emily can be relied upon to intercept, mark and drive the ball forward with gusto, chase down tackle and mark cleanly, making her a valuable member of a very accomplished backline that is miserly on opposition attacks.

Stinging from that loss, they put Caulfi eld Grammarians to the sword in their best performance of the season to advance to the Grand Final. Fans of St Kevin’s have had plenty to cheer about this year and in the club’s short history. Only four losses have been felt at St Kevin’s in their past 27 matches. They know how to win, and win big.

Round 1 - Tayla Jones (Hampton Rovers)

10 WOMEN’S RISING STARS THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Round 11 - Clare Konstanty (Glen Eira)

Serene continues to develop her game through hard work and dedication to the sport.

‘Larni’ is a quiet achiever, but her hard work and attitude at training quickly made her a popular team member. Larni has played every game in 2022, mainly as a half forward. Larni has great football awareness and is a completely selfl ess player. Each week she chases down opponents, has running bounces, and is a master of goal assists. Her game against Hawthorn demonstrated her consistency in applying these skills.

Portia is playing her fi rst season with MCC as a year 12 student. She has slotted into the team seamlessly and had an immediate impact to earn the Round 5 VAFA Rising Star nomination.

Sienna has enjoyed a fantastic start to her Aquinas career, slotting in seamlessly to the senior team’s forward line.

Serene is a past student at Haileybury College where she fi rst played football in the same year that she completed year 12 in 2019. After being invited to train with the Dandenong Stingrays in the Covid interrupted season of 2020, she joined the Haileybury Hearts last year.

Her form this season has shown improvement across all games and she is an important member of our team. One of Clare’s valuable assets is her running speed up forward and down the wings when she plays, which provides plenty of highlights.

Round 12 - Tahlia Meier (Melbourne University Womens)

A current year 12 student at Caulfi eld Grammar and member of the 2022 Sandringham Dragons NAB League side, Ruby is a really powerful and talented forward with a glorious kick for goal.

The poised and hard running forward caught the eye of many in her debut for the Kew Bears, walking away with plenty of the ball and a well-executed set shot goal. She has superb skills and a fi erce attack on the ball.

‘Les’ is a damaging long kick and a strong contested mark. Her ability and confi dence to break a tackle and take the game on was a highlight of Alessia’s preseason.

Round 10 - Lara Hausegger (Yarra Old Grammarians)

Round 3 - Serene Vudiniabola (Old Haileybury)

Lara loves playing footy and is driven to improve her game.

Round 4 - Paige Trajkovski (Kew)

Her hard work and dedication on the training track is starting to show through gameday with her ruck work and marking when playing forward providing plenty of highlights.

Hannah came to Old Trinity in 2021 having only previously only played football in the GSV for Trinity’s sister school Ruyton Girls’ School. Through sheer hard work in 2022 she has taken her game to another level. Playing every game when available, becoming a real cornerstone of our midfi eld.

Hannah’s biggest asset as was seen on the weekend, is to lift when her team needs a spark the most. During the second quarter through sheer will Hannah won a clearance, broke a tackle and kicked the teams fi rst goal, before then calmly slotting a set shot and taking a mark running back with the fl ight.

Emily capped off a great opening season by winning the Best & Fairest award for the Thirds. 2021 was her fi rst year of football, having previously been an accomplished netballer, playing at rep level which she continues to do so today.

Tahlia came to us at the conclusion of the Western Bulldogs FC’s VFLW season, after connecting with other MUWFC players who were training alongside her throughout the VFLW season. Tahlia has made an immediate impact on the club and her teammates, with her strong work ethic evident at training and on game day. Although one of the youngest members of our squad, Tahlia is an incredibly experienced player, having commenced playing footy at age 10. She has represented the Greater Western Victoria Rebels in the NAB league competition, donned the Vic Country jersey in the 2021 NAB AFLW U19 Championships, and played 11 games of VFLW across the past 2 years.

An uncanny ability to read the play, Emily can be relied upon to intercept, mark and drive the ball forward with gusto, chase down tackle and mark cleanly, making her a valuable member of a very accomplished backline that is miserly on opposition attacks.

Round 6 - Alessia Acquaro (Williamstown CYMS)

Round 16 - Pia Hobday (St Marys Salesian)

Round 14 - Hannah Lee (Old Trinity)

Pia has played 11 of the 16 games this season with St Mary’s kicking a goal and being named amongst the best 7 times.

At just 17 years of age she possesses courage beyond her years and is regularly crashing packs and making her presence felt. Her goal sense is exceptional and she has been hitting the scoreboard regularly, she’s also proved herself a more than handy defensive forward when called upon to fi ll that role.

Kitty has come to Old Brighton after a successful season with Sandy Dragons U/18’s and has approached open age football with great enthusiasm and maturity. She is a very creative player and has the knack of bobbing up in the right place at the right time and is deadly accurate around the goal. Last week she had 4 majors on the board before we knew it and fi nished the day with 6 through hard running and creating space.

Tayla Jones became the fi rst women’s player to progress from Auskick (in 2011) through to Seniors at the club. She also played for the Sandringham Dragons in 2020-2022, the U17 Vic Metro team in 2021 and is also an assistant coach for the Rovers U16 girls since last year.

Tay is an integral part of the Rovers women’s team as they continue to go from strength to strength.

Recently off her grand fi nal win for the NAB League, Paige has continued her onfi eld football achievements receiving a Round 4 VAFA Rising Star nomination.

We’ve encouraged this aspect of her game and it was on full show for the home crowd under lights at the Fearon Reserve, her match winning goal securing our fi rst win of the season and an exciting performance across half forward.

Round 5 - Portia Ronsberg (MCC)

In addition to playing some great footy all year Kitty has been fantastic around the group and is a pleasure to coach. She is a great listener and learner.

Lara is a natural footballer, coming through the Yarra Bushranger junior feeder program. At only 16 years old, Lara has already achieved much in her short football journey, winning multiple club and league Best and Fairest awards and playing representative football for the Oakleigh Chargers and Vic Metro programs.

Clare brings enthusiasm and passion to our team.

Having completed a full pre-season in 2022, Emily started the year in the SKOB Saints Reserves and soon rose to the Premier grade side, holding down an important half back role that suited her perfectly.

While the season fi nished without a win next to the club’s name, Pia has found a regular spot in the line up and will be looking to take the next step in her footballing career in 2023.

It did take Lara a couple of weeks to feel comfortable at the senior level. However, her form over the past month has been sensational. Playing as a mid-forward, Lara wins clearances and consistently hits the scoreboard from anywhere inside the 50.

When she’s not dominating for the Fields, expect to fi nd Ruby kicking bags during the AGS/APS school competition this year for Caulfi eld Grammar School.

Round 2 - Ruby Dale (Caulfield Grammarians)

Round 7 - Kitty Smyth (Old Brighton)

Round 8 - Sienna Jones (Aquinas)

Paige is hoping to continue refi ning her craft against the bigger bodies of Senior Women’s football in attempts to play at the highest level she possibly can. The Club hopes it can continue to be a pathway for up and coming aspiring female players.

A measured and composed forward/mid, Portia had her best game for the club in Round 5, getting plenty of the ball and executing set shot goals in slippery conditions to make it look easy. Portia has very clean skills, knows where to position herself and reads the play brilliantly.

Round 9 - Ruby Ford (Oakleigh Krushers)

Ruby has brought with her a lot of energy and enthusiasm in her fi rst year of senior football with the Krushers after a successful junior career with the Oakleigh Dragons and has quickly become a very popular & important member of our team.

Ruby slotted into the senior line up and never looked out of place, taking plenty of marks and kicking three really important goals in what was a really physically demanding and hard fought win against a super solid opponent.

Round 13 - Alanah Strode (St Bedes/Mentone)

Round 15 - Emily Condon (St Kevins)

Emily came down to the SKOB Saints straight out of school and followed her friends into the backline of the Women’s Thirds for season 2021.

Clare joined Glen Eira Women’s Football Club in 2021 from her junior club St Paul’s. She is a consistent regular at all trainings and strives to develop herself as a player.

Portia is looking forward to working further on her craft, improving her fi tness and spending more time as a midfi elder.

Clare’s team fi rst approach means she is willing to play in any position that she is asked too.

SKOB Saints Head Coach Tommy Purcell, “it was the best day I have experienced in 30 years of coaching.”

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 14

We’ve seen many special stories around VAFA women’s footy throughout the 2022 season, and in this Women’s Premier Grand Final edition of For The Love Of The Game, we look at some of our favourites.

St Kevin’s celebrated its inaugural pride round for its three women’s teams with a triple-header on July 16. The day featured a sponsored pride guernsey, luncheon and fundraising avenues. There was a hiccup leading into the day however, with the opposition forfeiting their reserves due to insuffi cient numbers, but in true women’s football community spirit and with the help of head coach Tommy Purcell, four VAFA clubs put their hand up to offer a scratch match as they knew the importance of the day. West Brunswick, Melbourne Uni, Monash Blues and Mazenod went above and beyond to fi nd players that could form one team, playing as the Pride Allies.

Stephanie Augustes, who was instrumental in the organisation of the day, said the community spirit in the reserves match was one of the most incredible things she’d ever been a part of. “We were so grateful for these clubs as they knew the signifi cance of the day for us and the broader community.”

FITZROY FAREWELL JOAN EDDY

Mother-daughter trio hit footy field at Parkside

Joan has not only been instrumental in the rise of the Fitzroy Football Club since its merger with the Fitzroy Reds in 2008, but also with the rise of women’s football and a front runner for women in footy leadership. Joan told the Northcote Leader her two crowning glories have been the introduction of women’s football, not only at the club but across suburban football, and the club’s fi rst senior men’s premiership since 1944 in 2018.

Last month, the VAFA, in conjunction with the VAFAUA, were fortunate enough to be able to appoint two panels of female umpires to a William Buck Premier Women’s Senior and Reserves match. This was a great opportunity to highlight the outstanding work and commitment of all female VAFA umpires. It was also the fi rst time VAFA female umpires got the chance to work together as a team.

The Parkside Devils have three mother-daughters gearing up for the side in this season‘s VAFA women’s footy competition. At some stages, the club has also had a fourth mother-daughter duo playing together, as well as two sisters and an aunt and niece.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

It was the end of an era at Brunswick Street Oval as the new season got underway, with long-time Fitzroy president Joan Eddy standing down from her role in the top job, leaving a lasting legacy at the famous club.

The special family connections in one team extend beyond just the senior women’s footy - the mothers have coaching and trainer duties in their daughters’ Parkside under 18 junior team on Sundays. MarieLouise Zeevaarder and Kimberley Ison are co-coaches of the side while Jodie Palmer is the trainer and secretary of the junior club. Palmer said it was crucial that a senior women’s football team was created to give junior girls a pathway after underage football.

“There’s two on-fi eld successes that are hard to separate, one is the establishment of women’s football and the other is the 2018 senior men’s premiership in Prem C,” Eddy said.

18 VAFA WOMEN’S GRAND FINAL RESULTS

A day to remember: 4 clubs complete perfect seasons, while Old Scotch go back-to-back

Old Scotch made the grand final from 4th position after a stirring last quarter full of goal highlights last week against Old FitzroyBrighton.finished the season on top of the ladder and had beaten Old Scotch twice this season, by 6 points and 4 points.

St Bedes/Mentone def. Parkdale

Their opponents, Parkdale, know all about winning streaks, having risen up the ranks from Division 4 where they were 9-0 at the end of the 2021 abandoned season.

The Cardinals were the only women’s team capable of claiming ‘back to back’ premierships, having defeated Old Brighton for the 2019 Division 1 title. And, they’ve come out on top against Fitzroy coming from behind with four goals in the second half to snatch victory from the Roys.

In Premier C, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers finished the home and away year with just 96 points kicked against them, an average of 6.8 points per game. They came into the big dance on a 15 game winning streak, and were looking to complete the perfect season.

Fitzroy def by. Old Scotch

After a very tight opening half where scores were locked at 1.1.7 apiece, it was SBMT who busted the game open and ran away after half time. Madi Wilson (2), and Brittini Donaldson (2) were the main culprits as part of the Tigers surge. Donaldson was named the best player on the ground in the Tigers 16th straight win to complete the perfect season.

It’s been three long years since we last awarded Premierships for Premier B to Division 3 Women’s. On Sunday, August 14, we were able to recognise the feats and celebrate the seasons of five sections, which kickstarted a big month of celebrations with finals fever in the air.

Two goals each to Millie Fraser-Smith and Alex Theodosi helped the Cardinals clinch the flag. While Lucy Morley was named best afield in the victory.

Beaumaris completed the perfect season of 16-0 beating Old Camberwell who made the grand final from third spot, overcoming 2019 Division 2 Premiers Therry Penola in the first semi by 2 points, and then upsetting Old Haileybury in the Preliminary Final.

Hampton Rovers def. Albert Park

Last time they met, Beaumaris held Old Camberwell goalless. This time around the Wellers kicked a goal in the opening quarter, but weren’t able to convert another for the day as the Sharks produced a 24 point victory to claim the title.

Kicking two goals to hold a 16 point lead at the final change. Bulleen opened the scoring in the last quarter but it was too little too late as MCC took home the clubs first pennant in their short

DIVISION 3 WOMEN’S

MCC joined St Bede’s, Beaumaris, and Hampton to become the fourth Premier to complete a perfect 2022 season. Bulleen won only 3 games in 2021, it is an extraordinary effort for them to have finished second and now playing off in the Grand Final.

When the teams lined up and the Australian National Anthem was played, it was a ‘shivers down your spine’ moment for sure. Rovers were seven points up going into the final quarter, but it seemed like Albert Park had all the momentum. The Rovers were able to withstand the onslaught from the Falcons to hold on by 2 points when the siren sounded.

Rosalind Byrne (2), and Sam McLean (2) were the mainstays in front of goal. McLean capping off a stellar year finishing with 42 goals for the season.

Kicking off the day at Trevor Barker Oval it was a low-scoring encounter in the opening half with MCC holding a 2-point lead at half-time. The ‘Premiership quarter’ is when MCC busted open the game and pulled away from the Ants to show their Premiership dominance.

In Division 2, Hampton have the longest current winning streak in the VAFA, having now won 25 games straight since their last loss in the 2019 Division 3 Women’s Grand Final.

Albert Park have performed incredibly well after being elevated in Round 3 from Division 3 to Division 2. It was an historic day for the club winning their first senior women’s Premiership.

With both sides able to find the middle of the sticks after halftime, Jessica Joyce slotting one for SKOB and Helen Lawrence another for the Westies, only a point distinguished the teams going into the final term. Putting it all on the line in the fourth and final quarter for the year, and inspired by a phenomenal boundary-line goal from Georgia Cropley, the Saints secured their first ever premiership in the VAFA Women’s competition.

Tessa Zagontinos starred late in the game when it was there to be won, kicking two goals alongside a best-onground performance from Laura Robertson. Alexandra Rock saved her best of the year for the grand final for the Sheagles, while Brianne Keogh was dominant across the four quarters.

A hotly contested opening half that had Marcellin in front at the main change turned to 4-seasons in one day after half time as the heavens opened.

Hail hit Elsternwick Park sideways during the third term. In the wet conditions it was Melbourne Uni who prevailed with Jade Tancred kicking the matchwinner from the pocket to seal the Premiership for the Mugars.

SKOB Saints have taken out the premiership flag in the William Buck Premier women’s section for season 2019 following a nine-point victory over West Brunswick.

SKOB’s Ellie McLinden was awarded the BOG medal from the officiating umpires.

The Sheagles were unrelenting in the first term and kicked two unanswered goals to take a 15-point lead into the first break, before holding off the minor premiers as they gradually kicked closer in the dying stages.

The fairy tale of the Sheagles in just their second year of existence against the battle-hardened and experienced Mugars looking for their first Amateur flag. We literally had the two top sides for the duration of the season playing off in the VAFA Wilson Women’s showpiece event.

Played in trying conditions at Elsternwick Park, where rain and wind pelted the ground for the whole match, a scoreless opening term ensued before the Saints managed two points in the second quarter.

went in as firm underdogs after the Saints had lost just the one match for the year. However, with Women’s Coach of the Year, Tom Stafford, at the helm and an unwavering belief, the Sheagles played out a grand final to remember!
