Discover Belgium’s high quality of Flemish wall hangings in Wielsbeke (BE)! We are a Belgian company, who is specialized in producing and designing our own tapestries in collection and ‘custom-made’ at the weaving mill located in Flanders. Our region is well-known for tapestries since the Middle Ages. Wall hangings, they exist now in all sizes, but previously they were created to cover big and cold stone walls in castles. So by this kind of investment, people could display their wealth and power. Mainly people were presented on a generally plain background as image.
Next to painting and sculpture, the tapestry became one of the mayor visual art forms. Each century had his own typical scenes: e.a.15th century: mille fleurs tapestries - 16th century: hunting, games,...
We reproduce from ancient masters like Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh,… to contemporary artists: Grayson Perry, Simon Bull, Robert Pejman, Pae White, Goshka Macuga, … and many more.
Flanders Tapestries bvba started the production of its first tapestry more than 20 years ago.
We pay Royalties to be protected against copywriting! Which was already important a few centuries ago, and is one of our main policy rules.
From day one, we wanted to create our own style in tapestries: by making a collection that provides a wide variety in+ styles and sizes. Choosing the exact colours for each reproduction of a Masterwork, and not having standard sizes for the whole collection.
Until today we are proud to say that our total process is manufactured in Belgium! Due to the hard economic situation, we like to keep the reputation of tapestries high, as its quality!

Misha Lenn Park Avenue ‘White’ & ‘Colours of Vegas’ Casino Misha Lenn is an internationally acclaimed, award winning artist who has developed a very distinctive style of watercolor painting. The complex patterns of Klimt, the elegance and grace of Degas, the romantic verve of Renoir, the technical command of Monet and the vibrant energy of Toulouse Lautrec have been his primary influences.
He started studying music at a very early age, but made a switch to draw. His musical interest still appears in his art in the form of musical scores collaged into his paintings. Misha earned his Master’s degree from the prestigious Academy of Art and Design in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Digital Tapestries Art Projects Tapestry weaving has been much in the ascendant in recent years, now that digital jacquard weaving has been adopted by fine artists who otherwise do not get involved with textile design.
Historically, the origin of pictorial representations on textiles – embroideries and weavings – lies in ancient China.
The special service which we give is a close co-operation with the artists. We are open to every challenge and focus only on a high-end product. Saying timeconsuming is important but a good communication saves money! Our Dornier loom is 3.20 m long and can weave a max. of 2.90m – warp is Trevira CS.
Those artists, who usually work with paper and other media to produce paintings, print or graphic art, are increasingly encouraged by their agents to use new pictorial media, including jacquard weaving programmes for translating their designs into textile images.
Single warp control has been possible since Jacquard invented his loom in 1804 – the result of long series of improvements on the ancient drawloom. It took all but another 200 years for single warp control via punched cards to be replaced by electronic means. Flanders and France were the strongholds of tapestry for many centuries.

Exclusive ‘Custom Made’ Tapestries Prestige Projects
2001: Cathedral – Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles The tapestries created by artist John Nava for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels are the largest collection hanging in a Catholic place of worship in the United States: 57 tapestries. Of the three tapestry groups, the most prominent is the Communion of Saints along the

south and north walls of the nave. Twenty-five fresco-like tapestries depict 135 saints and blesseds from around the world, including holy men and women of North America canonized by the Church. Twelve untitled figures, including children of all ages, represent the many anonymous holy people in our midst. All the figures direct our eyes to the light of the great

Pae White
2008: Oslo Opera House In the beginning of April, the Opera House in Oslo, Norway had his big opening. We worked together for almost a year with the artist Pae White on this prestige project. Pae White from the USA won the international competition for creating the stage curtain for the new opera house, with her MetaFoil design. White made use of a digital process to design the stage curtain. This involved scanning a piece of crumpled
silver foil and then transferring the digital image by computer to the loom.
More details: www.oslooperahouse.com
The stage curtain contains millions of light elements, created by cotton threads. The art committee chose MetaFoil on the grounds that: “…the design was intended to capture light.” It marks the divide and meeting point between stage and auditorium, between the performance and the spectators, and between fiction and reality.

Margret Eicher Those who thought that tapestries are outdated and only reflect the glamour of a long-past era will surely change their minds after viewing the work of Margret Eicher. At first glance, the artist’s objects suggest the impression of traditional tapestries. However, a closer look reveals that they are post-modern citations of these monumental textile pieces of art. Like no other image medium, tapestries have served both representative and political goals since the Middle Ages. As signs of royal magnificence, they played a significant part in displaying status. Their image content demonstrated and communicated their owner’s rank, claim to power and splendour. Although the general conditions that called for the presentation of valuable tapestries made of wool and silk, gold and silver thread

have changed, Margret Eicher manages to bring this traditional medium into the focus of an almost unprecedented attention. With her sensitive feeling for the original purpose of tapestries, whose production was far more expensive than that of paintings, she uses the medium to skilfully stage her own image content. Originally, the historic tapestries’ topics had to correspond to the representative and, at the same time, propagandistically instrumentalised character of this narrative medium. Life at court was a topic that was as popular as historic events, classical mythology, ancient history and stories from the Old and New Testament. When choosing her topics, Margret Eicher draws on a pool of images, which sometimes remind of the old artefacts. Her actual sources, however, are the numerous images that we all know from advertising, newspapers, the glamorous
Urteil des Paris
world of lifestyle magazines or TV soaps as well as personalities from politics and business. Combined with stock pieces taken from famous paintings by artists such as Hans Holbein, Tiziano Vecellio, Antoine Watteau or Thomas Gainsborough, they are electronically processed before being transferred to the textile medium. Regardless of the images and image worlds that Margret Eicher uses, she highlights one of the tapestry’s basic characteristics in order to give her image topics a mouthpiece and importance. In the artist’s work, the tapestry, even though the medium itself is instrumentalised, finds back to its original function as a means of communication and, in its form as a subtle and sophisticated citation, questions the power of images in today’s times. This is Walker’s first director, Daniel Defenbacher in 1951. This was one of the many places where brush had to appear in front of a person.
The final file was 762 MB and had 83 layers. Luckily this was one channel only (grayscale). The final flattened file is 88 MB. Another consideration was predicting were where the
seams would fall on the tapestry. The maximum width the loom could do is just under 10 feet. We divided the file evenly into five segments, and marked them with guides
so we could see in advance (below). The goal was to be sure a seam didn’t cut directly through a person.

Miriam Bäckström Characters of a mirror lady Swedish artist Miriam Bäckström emerged as a conceptual photographer in the 1990’s, best known for her images of empty interiors which tell a story in the absence of the individual. Bäckström’s more recent works explore the documentary and the fictional, interweaving narratives that create new and uncertain realities and identities.
Smile as we have already won
24
She works with fictive characters as both form and material. The title piece for her current show at Nils Stærk Smile As If We Have Already Won depicts an endlessly reflective mirror landscape in which three female figures pose covered in mirror fragments. The figures become visible as they reflect each other and mirror the space within the tapestry. Every character can only exist in relation to others but as reflections of each other, they start to show us their inner logic: their language, their truth and drives.

Miriam Bäckström (born 1967) lives and works in Stockholm. Selected exhibitions include: The Opposite of Me is I, Lunds Konsthall, Lund (2012), Mirrors, Nils Stærk, Copenhagen (2012), Mirrors, Gallery Niklas Belenius, Stockholm (2009), Betraktaren/The Viewer, Nils Stærk, Copenhagen (2006) and Allusive Moments, Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco (2007). Per Fronth New exhibition REPLIKA at Galleri Fineart Marking the 200 year jubilee of the Norwegian Constitution of Nov 4th 1814, Mr. Thommessen will unveil two massive concrete sculptures inspired by an icon of Norway, her national flag. The two sculptures weighing 7 tons each marks the entry point of Fronths latest body of works; a journey from the shores of Politics to the riverbeds of Poetry.
- I am very excited to present artworks based on some of the ideas that have been ocupying me over the last few years, Fronth says. Hung Liu Jacquard tapestry Hung Liu’s 2013 tapestry edition September depicts a Manchurian bride in formal marriage attire, including an elaborate embroidered headdress which the artist has overlaid with the stylized image of a wild duck. September translates Liu’s kaleidoscopic vision into five hundred colors of woven thread; beneath its eye-catching surface lies a compassionate link, connecting a moment experienced by millions with a single instant in the life of a woman whose story has been lost to history. The tapestry’s composition presents an intoxicating bouquet of symbol and color, combining a figurative, photographic portrait with the cascading rivulets and washes of oil that Liu uses to dissolve the viewer’s sense of
photography – and by extension, history – as a complete or trustworthy record. An 1871 photograph of an anonymous Manchu bride by John Thompson served as the basis for the painting upon which September is based, which Liu completed following the events of September 11th, 2001. The expression of the bride in Thompson’s photograph, Liu says, reflected a moment of uncertainty, a feeling of being at the brink, which she saw echoed in the collective emotional response to the 9/11 attacks. In Liu’s re-imagining, the bride is endowed with the delicate strength and elegance of the wild bird in flight, whose design Liu based on a 10thcentury Song dynasty ink painting. with its head up, the head of Liu’s duck is instead deliberately bowed, as if in mourning or descent. In the wake of 9/11, the artist told me, “the bride symbolizes people involuntarily wed to an unexpected relationship – a new era in our political consciousness.” Ultimately, September’s vibrancy is reminiscent of those moments in life – whether tragic or hopeful – when our adrenaline and excitement heighten the senses, making colors brighter and passions stronger. These moments where the beauty all around us is suddenly revealed, blooming like the colors surrounding Liu’s bride, are made both more powerful and more fleeting by the knowledge that afterwards, our lives will never be the same. Guy Diehl Still Life with Billie Holiday, 2007 Guy Diehl’s 2007 tapestry Still Life with Billie Holiday is an understated work: it does not wear its heart on its sleeve. One might easily appreciate the unpretentious, cloudlike beauty of its single magnolia bud or the technical accomplishment of the whole and leave it at that. This tapestry is a departure from Diehl’s typically intense, raking light; in its absence we find an emphasis on questions of texture and surface. There is a singular delicacy—a “grain,” as in a photograph or a voice, that is uniquely his—to the way multiple lithographic color impressions in Diehl’s prints merge to form one image. It is evidenced in the woven medium as well, in the sheer variety of extremely subtle tones he is able to conjure from an almost entirely grisaille
palette: the artist’s hand reveals itself in the minute difference between the lowest book and its reflection on the table, or the spare, gentle highlights by which the glass just barely announces itself. The work can also be read as an elegaic reflection on the fleeting nature of beauty, via the avatar of Holiday herself. The associations which a book of Holiday’s love songs stir in our memories—her sultry dark eyes, that heartbreaking delivery, the tempestuous arc of her life—provide a context within which to read Diehl’s tableau. In view of Holiday’s impermanence and the beacon of her music, the magnolia’s simple, quiet vivacity and the shadowy grays of its surroundings suggest a single candle in a dark room,
a diamond in the rough. The best love songs—especially when she sings them—give this same impression: that of a brief window through which a ray of hope may shine. The bittersweet beauty of the work is buoyed by its comforting physicality and scale: after all, textiles are familiar, warm objects which do last. Its permanence and grand size ultimately lend Still Life for Billie Holiday an air of celebration, of panegyric: an elegant, laudatory tribute. Diehl’s work often involves an artistic reckoning with canonical heroes and giants, paying homage to a master by using his or her formal language. Here, Holiday’s lyricism and piercing emotion seem suspended in time, hovering in the air like the final notes of a song. Nick Stone

Edgar Degas Birth: 1834 Death: 1917 Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas was a French artist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman, he is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These dancers display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and depiction of human isolation.

Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, van Gogh had two unsuitable and unhappy romances and had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage.

Irises - Garden by Van Gogh Irises was painted in the last year before his death in 1890. He called the painting 'The lighting conductor for my illness', because Van Gogh felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint. The painting was influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblockprints. Comments on the painting: 'It strikes the eye from afar - the irises are a beautiful study full of air and life.' 0VGIR01 0VGIR02 0VGIR03

John Waterhouse Tennyson's poem 'The Lady of Shalott' published in 1883 tells of a woman suffering under an undisclosured curse, and living
isolated in a tower near King Arthur's castle. She is allowed to see the outside world only throught its reflection in a
mirror. One day she glimpses the handsome Knight Lancelot and cannot resist looking at him directly. The punishment that

Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Luncheon of the Boating Party (1880-1881)
The painting depicts a group of Renoir's friends relaxing on a balcony at the Maison Fournaise along the Seine river in Chatou, France. The painter and art patron, Gustave Caillebotte, is seated in the lower right. Renoir's future wife, Aline Charigot, is in the foreground playing with a small dog. On the table is fruit and wine. The diagonal of the railing serves to demarcate the two halves of the composition, one densely packed with figures, the other all but empty, save for the
two figures of the proprietor's daughter Louise-Alphonsine Fournaise and her brother, Alphonse Fournaise, Jr, which are made prominent by this contrast. In this painting Renoir has captured a great deal of light. The main focus of light is coming from the large opening in the balcony, beside the large singleted man in the hat. The singlets of both men in the foreground and the table-cloth all work together to reflect this light and send it through the whole composition. As he often did in his paintings, Renoir included several of his friends in Luncheon of the Boating Party. Among them are the following: • The seamstress Aline Charigot, holding a dog, sits near the bottom left of the composition. Renoir later married her. • Charles Ephrussi — wealthy amateur art historian, collector, and editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts — appears wearing a top hat in the background. The younger man to whom Ephrussi appears to be speaking, more casually attired in a brown coat and cap, may be Jules Laforgue, his personal secretary and also a poet and critic.
Detail of Ellen Andrée drinking from a glass in the center of the composition
66
• Actress Ellen Andrée drinks from a glass in the center of the composition. Seated across from her is Baron Raoul Barbier. • Placed within but peripheral to the party are the proprietor's daughter Louise-Alphonsine Fournaise and her brother, Alphonse Fournaise, Jr., both sporting traditional straw boaters and appearing to the left side of the image. Alphonsine is the smiling woman leaning on the railing; Alphonse, who was responsible for the boat rental, is the leftmost figure. • Also wearing boaters are figures appearing to be Renoir's close friends Eugène Pierre Lestringez and Paul Lhote, himself an artist. Renoir depicts them flirting with the actress Jeanne Samary in the upper righthand corner of the painting. • In the right foreground, Gustave Caillebotte wears a white boater's shirt and flat-topped straw boater's hat as he sits backwards in his chair next to actress Angèle Legault and journalist Adrien Maggiolo. An art patron, painter, and important figure in the impressionist circle, Caillebotte was also an avid boatman and drew on that subject for several works.

GU S TAV KLIMT
Birth: 1862 Death: 1918 Gustav Klimt was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects. Klimt's primary subject was the female body.
The Kiss (original Der Kuss) was painted by Gustav Klimt, during his ‘golden period’, and is probably his most famous work. It depicts a couple, in various shades of gold and symbols, sharing a kiss against a bronze background.

Figurative elements and symbols of peace, the essence of human beings, their sensuousness and the depths of their souls form the main focus of Franz Ruzicka's creative work. Dissolving corporeal beings by means of flowing and energetic contours is characteristic of his "soul images". "Streifenfigurationen" (Stripe Figurations) is the name given by Franz Ruzicka to his androgynous nudes with their clearly-contouredforms.
For some years now, Franz Ruzicka, who was born in 1958 and since 1984 has dedicated himself exclusively to painting, has been working on needled felt using a rolling technique that gives rise to the distinctive style of his works. This technique has been applied to his "Sign of Hope" series which was created in the autumn of 2001 an symbolizes with simple means a longing for peace, freedom and security.

The Lady and the Unicorn (French: La dame Ă la licorne) is the title of a cycle of tapestries often considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages in Europe. They are estimated to have been woven in the late 15th century (c. 1490), in Flanders.
The tapestries are commonly interpreted as depicting the six senses - taste, hearing, sight, smell, touch, and "A mon seul dĂŠsir" (meaning: "to my only desire"), often interpreted as love or understanding. Each of the six tapestries depicts a noble lady with the unicorn and some include a monkey or a lion in the scene.
