During my three years of Undergraduate study I have always sought to find the most appropriate scheme for each proposal, even if that meant stepping outside of my comfort zone and area of expertise. This in turn has made me confident in my ability to quickly grasp new software’s along with tackle any problems which may arise through a project’s conception. My strengths lie when designing around spatial constraints, using the numerous factors which define a site to provide direction. Since graduating I have had the luxury to travel and soak in the different architectural approach’s indicative of each region. This curiosity of the international approach along with my nature to thrive when put in unfamiliar environments were the fundamental reasons why I chose to work abroad. My last position was at Nicolas Laisné architects in Paris and I was fortunate enough to work on the firms submission for the Biennale of Vennice along with a number of competitions. Unfortunately these projects were either confidential or still in progress due to the pandemic and I have not been able to add all of them to the catalogue of work presented.

Endoskeletal Rebirth Adapt and Extend Mixed Use - UNESCO Heritage Y3 S1 (3 Weeks)
The excessive conservation of ancient buildings has lead to the loss of a key part of architectural history. Which portrayed how technologal advances of an era could be embraced through their superposition over older constructional elements. This allowed for a visual representation of the interdependant relationship between architecture and construction. The scheme implemented highlights the potential of an extension to both coexist with the Grade II* listed building whilst leaving the opertunity to emerge out of the timber huts eventual decay. Located in Chathams Historic Dockyard the site is isolated from its surroundings and compliments the aging population of the region itself. With the recent arrival of numerous university campuses as interventions to revitalise the area, a generational facility seemed the most suitable function for the plot. The project also directly relates to my dissertation titled ‘Colours ability to instigate societal change within the built environment’. However particular emphasis was placed on the excessive conservation of ancient buildings and its detriment to our generation forming an architectural style of our own. Particularly challenging some of the opinions established by SPAB and ideas surrounding the superposition of ancient buildings refering particularly to the neogothic period.

The graph above outlines timber decay over time highlighting the impact on compressive strength as a result of natural aging. The constructional elements of the timber huts are already compromised and despite being a Grade II* listed building there is no current or planned maintenance of the structure, therefore its demise is absolute. My proposal creates a non imposing substructure within the huts to both provide longevity and celebrate the technological advances in construction. Using the huts as a vessle to the eventual emergency of our generations contribution towards constructional history.

The CLT structure supports the huts however due to the poor mainentance fundimental components have begun to shift with the rubble foundations close to decay. The raft foundation of the intervention is non intrusive to comply with conservation. However over time as the rubble foundation collapses a similar shift should occur to provide some stability. Overturning the immediate need to resolve the foundations.

The Dual Facade
Collective Dwelling Residential Environmental Focus Y2 S2 (6 Weeks) The Faverhsam project’s brief sought to introduce a new collective housing complex onto a forgotten area of the creek, which has lost its purpose over time having previously been imperative to maritime culture. The creek is connected using two access bridges however congestion has led to the need to fill this void in pedestrian transparency. My proposel ‘The Dual Facade’, appitamises this forgotten time by highlighting the shift in nature of both technologies and how we concieve buildings currently. In doing so the building replicates its immediate surroundings both in form and through the adoption of a double skin facade which only faces south, wrapping around the building. Contrary to belief London does not have the highest % housing price growth, the 2018 graph shows more significant growth in less favoured regions of the country. Faversham being one of them brought about the idea of replicating Londons often sought after riverside frontage properties however creating the scheme in an affordable manner catering to those in the local community.

Evaporative cooling aza to counterbalance the heavy glaze. With the grey water scheme also aiding the hard landscaping proposed.

Roof Typology Study
The typology model was initially to catalogue the surrounding buildings and itteratively model roofing solutions to conform with the existing fabric. However the green spaces propelled me to replicate a similar narrative in my intervention. Originally I thought about the conventional green strip hugging the rivers boundry, however the shift between private and public spaces meant that the journey would likely be experienced with ‘glimpses’. The parabolic bridge proposed is also essential for revitalising the area with the nearest bridge only being one way and often causing congestion across the rivers other crosspoints. The sites local consisted of a number of narrow streets ending with cul-de-sacs. Fortunately the site had only one obstacle - a wall seperating the previously semiprivatised carpark with the main road towards the highstreet.
Exploded Constructional Axonometric
Key The exploded shows where the building skin shifts from regular glazing to a double skin and back. Along with the typologies of each floor as they progressively get more costly and cater for specific niche audiences. The drawing best shows the relationship between the basement level dock and repair shop with the housing block. Another key feature would be the parabolic bridge and use of pergolas to subconciously direct circulation towards significant areas of the larger urban site.

F3 + Site Interventions
I opted for a dramaticised style to compliment the buildings sweeping form. The sites urban context promotes heavy winds thus the glazing acts as a natural barrier giving a sense of security whilst witnessing the contrasting conditions outside. This is once again the case when considering the wintergarden defusing the heavy mass of the buildings concrete and timber form. The sweeping roof in tandem with the glaze project the linear masses.
2-Point Perspective Section B-B
The section above helps to narrate the buildings function within its surrounding context. Showing the urban change between conventional housing and the reintroduction of maritime culture. The building gives the option for those who dock to rent out rooms. The ground floor provides bespoke services for inhabitants along with the general public. A pharmacy, hairdressers and laundromat are the facilities shown in the GF of the section. The rest of the section consists of a wintergarden and a number of housing typologies to cater for each specific need.

Elevating Mass
Architectural Landscape Educational Brownfield Y2 S1 (6 Weeks) The landscape project is located in Betteshanger Park near Deal, Kent. The site itself had no convenient access and no prior construction since its nearby mines were decomissioned in the early 1900s. This has resulted in ‘shale heaps’ compromising construction particularly near the cliffing edge. The site being so vast meant that any approach towards the Gardening and Culinary school would have to be a spectacle. The scheme therefore attemps to evade literal representations of landscapes and look towards emphasizing the facility’s stature, despite the size differential against the site. This was proposed through the exponential increase of depth upon approach of the school. This would disorrient our monocular cues which are used for percieving depth. The landscaping approach consisted of a number of sunken gardens paired with natural buffers this was primarily to cater to the senses. Providing a narative to those with heightened senses where others have deterorated. The material concept takes inspiration from Herzog de Meurons ‘Stone House’ in Italy using the remnant materials of the surrounding site to help aclimate the building with its barren surroundings. In this case a gradiating flint facade was chosen both due to its locality and in an effort to futher disorient where the building ends vertically.

The skewed parallel projections were intentionally chosen to better portray the buildings relationship with the landscape. The building sits in a narrow pocket of unvegetated land providing shade from the surrounding trees. This is particularly necessary since the ‘Event Platform’ which provides panoramic views of Betteshangers agricultural cropland faces directly South.

Evasive Apertures
Permanent and Flexible Gallery in Barcelona Cultural - International Y1 S2 (4 Weeks) The Barcelona project revolves around the introduction of a new two-part gallery on the Avinguda Miramar. The site is fronted by a panoramic view of the city despite being obstructed by the vast vegetation in the area. The primary access to the site is through the chicane turning which slows traffic towards the popular ‘Hotel Miramar’. The most appropriate route to the site is by walk allowing for the oppertunity to embrace the scenic views present when travelling up and down the elevated terrain. My proposal ‘Evasive Apertures’, uses the elevation of the site in tandem with its high visibility line to create a structure best seen through glimpses. Until its own sculptural qualities can be appreciated on its immediate approach. The projects stand alone features are its superposed bridges that dissect the central courtyard along with an external micro-climate, created as another point of defusion. The green space regulates the buildings high mass and restrictive ceilings, these are intentionally low to prompt visitors engagement with the paintings displayed. On entrance there is a complete visual permeability through the structure through the choice placement of glaze. This can be seen best in the oblique plans and is a countermeasure to negate any potential feelings of entrapment. The design plays with spacial perspective expanding and shortening the distance between both temporary and permanent walls to enforce a natural ciculatory loop. The portfolio’s cover image ‘A View from a Painting’ shows the inhouse artist visualising the concept of witnessing glimpses on aproach to the building.
