Proposal of a new student dormitory in the campus of Politehnica

University of Timisoara

This final project emerges around the aniversary context of 100 years celebration from the founding moment of the university and it represents a proposal of a new building to add in the collection of the distinctly dormitories of the campus, having a specific key site. With many common spaces, a public groundfloor having a coffee place, co-working spaces and a makerspace workshop, the proposed new building aims to be seen not as a simple dormitory, but rather to be perceived as a student’s hub in the heart of the campus.

Polyclinic in Timisoara

Status: faculty project / 5th year

This project was one of the most challenging design process because of the small plot that had to accomodate a lot of medical specializations and also to rigurous respect the urbanistic and building reglementations in the area along with the tehnical necessities of such a trully complex functional program.

Among the long list of dedicated medical offices for each speciality with it’s own specific equipment and compatibility aspect, other requirements for this polyclinic was to include a children playground, generous waiting space for clients, a small parking lot for the medical and building staff and a personal room for the doctors to rest and teambuild.

The final result consists of 3 building parts, having a main block linked with the street and a second medical operator block in the back side, both of them connected by a distinctive skelethal pasarela with waiting area that also forms specific inner courtyards.

Hostel in the Fabric historical neighborhood of Timisoara

Status: faculty project / 4th year

The perforated facade benefits the making of CLT panels made by computer-aided atomated cutting as CNC machines. A tehnical advantage transposed in an estetical one.

The hostel consists of a Bistro on the corner groundfloor among with the reception area, 3 stories of renting rooms grouping 2 apartments per level, and the last floor beeing for communal use with a green terrase, a conference room, co-working office, and a generous living room with kitchen connected to the BBQ terrace.

The structural concept consists of a central concrete core with 2 “wings” of wood structure made of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) elements.

The interior design concept consists of reused Euro Palletes panels of furniture, visually working with the CLT panels beeing wood visible.

Redesign of apartment blocks neighbourhood in Timisoara

Status: rehabilitation contest, 2nd prize / 4th year

The main design task for this project was to propose a new identity for the facades of an existing group of blocks from the communism period, but beside the thermal reabilitation, our team tried to get a more complex answer about what could be done for such a project. We’ve integrated some energy sustenability principles, landscape design, optimized parking, bike support, green rooftop, playgrounds and nature as an urban ghaza concept, in order to re-animate the inner courtyard and get closer to a contemporary collective living qualities for the comunity, and also a throwback of the initial modernist design of the site.

Tom Ford showroom object

Status: faculty project / 4th year

For this project I firstly had to study a fashion house famous brand, about their style, concept and history, and after that to design a specific object for one of their showrooms.

The reason I’ve chosen to create a ceiling lightning unit for a Tom Ford shop was the lack of a main one, in order to catch the eye from the street entrance and mark the place. The model is composed of warm spot light units emphasising the luxurious waiting zone, but also has diffused light modules to enhance the surounding space. It can be used as a main ceiling lightning or mounted as a lamp on the plan floor.

On the other hand, by this object I wanted to do a subtle reference to Tom Ford’s professional life past, when he enlighted other brands like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent and brought to successful contemporary bussiness.

Houses for renting in a mountain area of Banat

Status: faculty project / 3rd year

The design task of this project consists of a 3 houses proposal in a mountain area village full of nature treasure surroundings. The main project requirement is to have a MasterHouse for owners vacantions and two renting units through Airbnb platform along with facilities such as wellness area, BBQ zone, mountain bicycles and kayaks for trips. Composition of the houses is inspired from the traditional two slopes roof which create 2 distinct volumes, one of them being highed up in order to benefit from zenital natural light. The materials used are natural (stone and wood) in order to give a rustic experience.

The MasterHouse is placed in the downhill side next to the street in order to be a ready to welcome place for the guests, whereas the renting units are located on the upper hill in order to have a gradient intimacy, among with the wellness area, having the best views.

The interior space has the fireplace as a compositional core dividing the house into the 2 distinct spaces representing daytime and nightime areas.

Case

House for One Family in Langenthal, Switzerland

The research consists of a house designed by the architect for his brother. This family home it’s all inspiring, the glass,aluminium and concrete structure seems almost to float in the middle air. The sides are full windowsless, but the front and back are entirely glazed. You can look right through the house. There is no limit, no boundaries, only open space. By entering the house through the entrance core at the downside of the small hill, you find yourself in the center of the house. The 300+ square meters are mainly a room covering specific spaces at different levels. A series of ramps connect the floors, everything seems to flow in this house. Only the bedrooms are divided into different parties. In the inner courtyard, the family planted an olive tree and lavander plants, a truly calm place for them. This swiss house is an architectural masterpiece inside and outside.

Six apartments building in a district of Timisoara

Status: faculty project / 3rd year

The proposal for this project consists of a low-rise building designed for collective living – modern apartments block of 6 flats being situated in a developing urban area.

Designed to serve a community of 6 families, the ground floor is meant to be for common and public use having a space for renting on the street side and also a common-use zone (living) room available to all inhabitants and to be used for meetings and special events such as birthday parties, being located in relationship with the green zone and children’s playground. This is one advantage of low rise buildings: the possibility of creating a closer community of inhabitants.

The upper levels are dedicated to living apartments with 1 or 2 bedrooms. Also an external room is provided as a logia, made by a subtle cut to reflect the dynamism of our current world and in order to generate a perpetual contemporary architectural language in the existing urban context that is being dominated by monotony linear apartment blocks.

2017 C.A.S.A National Contest Special Mention Martin Toimil

Status: architectural competition finalists / 2nd year

From the design task: The entire exercise can be summarized in one word: together. Beyond this one can see the specific place within the city and the pretext of creating a small community. On a street near Arad’s city center several families have the opportunity to build a life together.

The courtyard and built areas will gain different usages (from common, or even open to the neighborhood at some points, to private and individual). The architectural study urges to a personal research, meaning each student is to take ownership over the reading and interpretation of the design brief, and particular, in the sense of understanding and adequately measuring the proposals to what the site itself demands, starting primarily from the community and its members, taking into account the site’s particularities, the characteristics of the immediate neighborhood, but also understanding the force of the city.

Its public addressability and relation with the street shall be defined and detailed in the proposed community life scenario. The usage can revolve around a common activity: work, social, educational, cultural or relaxation, initiated by the community and opened, to a greater or lesser extent, to the immediate Neighborhood. Each of the 7 families will have its own place, a house “with a courtyard”, but something more as well.

The Plot

We started this project trying to speculate about what may bring together this community and the best answer we found is their lifestyle: the fact that all of them work as freelancers, having related domains. So they decide to move together not only for housing, but also to expand ideas and improve their work, integrating the working life in the office hub in the front part of the site and the habitation part in the back. The contemporary ideea of working from home, but not in a properly way in this case.

An important aspect of the site is its placement situated between three other courtyards. We desire to generate a continuable system, opened to the neighbourhood’s courtyards in order to connect them through our site.

The office hub is designed as a playful content based on the principle of shared spaces with a working environment where, fun, play and creativity unite, having a central open space with a dynamic flow sideways to top where are office rooms for concentated work. The daytime areas are integrated next to the working place. The street facade is covered in vegetation with the vehicle acces solved by a subtle cut, putting accent on the pietonal gang entrance that works as a funnel for the hub and being a clear landmark on the Episcopiei street. The back facade is glass covered being opened to the courtyard nature.

We created the 7 houses as a 7x7x7m module type of housing to maintain the ideea of equality, all of them having common and private spaces by posibility of the perforated-stell shell facade to slide on the curtain glass to open the up or down level in order to obtain the desired intimacy level. The module houses are also suspended in order to generate a continuous open space underneath them, having the posiblity of a common use and arrangement, such as the office hub.

Cohousing for 3 friends in a historical area of Timisoara

Status: faculty project / 2nd year

The main thinking task in this project was how this 3 houses can interact with each other and what shape would allow this action and be most suitable in this historical neighbourhood context.

Firstly, I’ve considered very important to design an inner courtyard between the 3 buildings, a transitional and shared space for the 3 friends and their families. I started from the basic “U” form because it generates a direction and in this case to frame a great tree, but I’ve particularized the shape using addition and subtraction for the access and the connection with the garden area.

The white aspect and brick materiality also plays an important role in order to adapt to the existing chromatic style of the contemporary buildings.

Habitat for Guinea Pigs at the Zoo Park in Timisoara

Status: faculty project / 2nd year

The first task was to analize the life of animals at the Zoo Park, and after that to design a new and better life habitat for a selected species.

I’ve chosen the Guinea Pigs for their potential as pets and because their value wasn’t highlighted at the Zoo.

Secondly, I proposed a new site for them, right after the Zoo access, opposite the lake, and closely to the children playground in order to be easily seen and interact with their fluffiness in the petting zone. Then I’ve designed their habitat by areas and functions: an isolated spot for babies, burrows and caves sleeping zones, a natural oasis for the green food, and a petting zone where they can eat grain dry food served by tourists, all their habitation areas being connected via circulation tunnels designed for their height and fun.

Living Room Interior Design

status: completed / 2nd year

The main task from the elderly couple owners was to design a bright cream-colored living room in a modern manner to brighten up their final settlement.

One accent was put on the coziness when watching movies, and I decided to create a slab along the cornering sofa in order to offer a space for serving and to store wine.

Another element that I’ve played with was illusions: generating a floating effect by raising and lightning the furniture’s prisms. Also by alternating closed and open zones in which the door-glassed reflection creates the impression of a closed box.
