IT CAN’T BE DENIED:
Jazz is just cool. Maybe it’s the way the music feels like a warm summer day, breezy and effortless, without trying to hard. Or maybe it’s because jazz musicians are cool people themselves, like acoustic bassist Matt Penman, who got interested in the genre at age 14 because his cousin, “the coolest person [he] knew,” played bass. “He played the electric bass, and I wanted to be like him,” Penman said. Penman grew up in New Zealand, far from any smoky jazz club where one of the great jazz musicians might have played. When he was 19, he received a scholarship to attend college in the U.S. and is now one of the eight members of the SFJAZZ SFJAZZ Collective, page B15
