BoomBox has a new album on the way called “Filling in the Color.” Singer and songwriter Zion Godchaux described the upcoming release as “more sophisticated and dynamic.” “For the past eight years, we’ve been drawing the outlines,” Godchaux said. “Now we’re taking all the experience and wisdom we’ve gained and attempting to fill in the color.”

and seeing live music are two different things. With BoomBox you get both. BoomBox combines the beats and grooves of producer and DJ Russ Randolph with the guitar playing and vocal stylings of Zion Rock Godchaux. BoomBox will perform two headlining shows at State Bridge Friday and Saturday night. BoomBox originated in Muscle Shoals, Ala., a city with a rich Rock n’ Roll and soul history where Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and numerous others recorded. Godchaux’s own parents are both musicians who performed with the Grateful Dead throughout the ’70s. Acknowledging their musical roots is important, but BoomBox also wants listeners to live in the now. The duo doesn’t create setlists prior to performing, instead letting the mood of the audience dictate the show. “It’s like a conversation,” Godchaux said. “We’re not prophets. We can’t predict what the vibe of the crowd is going to be until we get there. Creating a setlist that afternoon (before the show) doesn’t make sense to us, so we just leave it open.”

The three members of The Sessh have the cure for what ails you, and it comes in a 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 inch square plastic package. The local band’s new 11-song album is called “Anodyne,” which, when used as a noun, is the term for a pain-killing drug or medicine. “In medieval times it was an elixir that you would take after committing some type of sin, to purge yourself of the sin,” said band founder Cristian Basso. “I thought that was cool from a psychological standpoint. Now it’s translated to cure for pain, something that relieves you from stresses of everyday life. I think music does that for people in general and certainly for us, so we ran with it.” Tonight at Solaris Plaza in Vail, Basso, who plays the MIDI bass on the album, will take the stage with fellow bandmates Trevor Jones, who plays guitar, and drummer Jeff Jani for free show celebrating “Anodyne,” which drops today. Along with the Vail show, the trio will perform two nights in Salida, as well as a show in Gunnison to celebrate the new album.

Everyone is so busy with other things,” Basso said. The album weaves together four different musical styles: funk, rock, soul and electronica. The sound is layered with a heavy, thick, low-end sound. With Jones and Jani a few hours away, Basso ended up doing both the harmonies and the lead vocals. “That was a big to-do for me, from an artistic standpoint,” he said. “I’ve never been in that position. Vail today, featuring concerts that showcase the orchestra’s distinctive sound and keen ability to capture the imaginations of audiences around the world. Led by Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin, The Philadelphia Orchestra returns to Bravo! Tickets for all Bravo! Vail concerts featuring The Philadelphia Orchestra are now on sale at bravovail. org or by calling 877-812-5700. “Last year I found the connection between Vail audiences and the Orchestra’s music to be truly special, and I look forward to returning this summer,” said Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin. “The Verdi Requiem is an important masterpiece in the symphonic and choral repertoire, and it also has been extremely meaningful in my life. I am eager for the Vail audience to hear the orchestra, along with our stellar soloists and the Colorado Symphony Chorus, perform this monumental work, particularly after

GO & DO

No Need for Fireworks No rest for the injured with These Homes…

By Jordan D. Metzl, M.D. Special to the Daily

In the beginning days of sports medicine, the advice was simple. Your shins hurt from running, your knees hurts from biking or your shoulders hurt from swimming? Just stop doing those things. But does that logic work with athletes? Is it good medicine? The answer to these questions is no! Complete rest is almost always terrible advice — all of the cardiovascular conditioning that goes into training is lost if you don’t keep moving. Patients get unhealthy and depressed — and they end up not liking their doctor very much. And as patients have gotten smarter, they often press their doctor to find an active solution, or they find another doctor who will. SPECIAL TO THE DAILY

IT’S ALL ABOUT BIOMECHANICS Which brings us to biomechanics. Much like the mechanics of what makes a plane fly or a car drive, the mechanics of the body are related to the task that the body is being asked to do. Advances in the concepts and practices of biomechanics have greatly shifted the field of sports medicine in the past 10 to 15 years. In addition to trying to keep patients moving, figuring out why the injury happened, and more importantly, how to prevent it from happening again, is now the key to the practice of sports medicine.

SPORTS MEDICINE

The problem: Lindsay had patellofemoral knee pain from cycling.

Here’s how addressing biomechanics helped some of my patients fix their problems.

The fix: Raising her seat height. By having her saddle too low during riding, she was loading too much pressure on the front of her knees.

HOUSEMADE GELATO, FRESHLY BAKED BREAKFAST PASTRIES, SANDWICHES AND WRAPS DAILY LA BOTTEGA RESTAURANT AND WINE BAR is proud to introduce "deliZioso", an intimate Food Emporium reminiscent of a Mediterranean Market. Specialties include Meats and Cheeses from Europe and Colorado as well as housemade Gelato, Pastries, Breakfast and Lunch Sandwiches, Wraps and Salads.

The problem: Jason had bad shin pain due to a pronating foot that rolled inward and loaded excessive force on the tibia, over-striding and weak hips that created an unstable pelvis and trunk. The fix: Over-the-counter orthotics to stabilize his foot, a switch to a higher cadence and shorter stride to reduce loading force, and adding squats to his work out routine to increase glute strength.

The problem: Bob had aching shoulders while swimming due to a strength imbalance, a common swimmer’s problem. He had plenty of anterior (front of the shoulder) strength, but he had neglected his posterior shoulder muscles. The fix: Build posterior shoulder strength with exercises such as seated rows or rows in a plank with weights.

When the pectoralis muscles are stronger than the scapular muscles, the shoulder gets pulled forward. Over time, this can cause what is known as an “impingement,” a pinching shoulder. Rest will make the pain go away, but thinking about the biomechanical problems and how to fi x them is the key to miles of injury-free training and racing. Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., is an awardwinning author and sports medicine physician at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery. He will speak on the topic of “Effective Body Care: Common Sports Injuries and the Easy Home Remedies to Fix Them” this Friday at the Antlers at Vail.

What if you Could Tickle Your Fat Away… Wouldn’t it be great to get rid of those inches that exercise can’t seem to shake? Now you can with an innovative liposuction technology that sets itself apart from other forms of liposuction – it is safe and recovery time is faster. It is called TICKLE LIPO because of the tickling sensation experienced during the procedure. Dr. Scott Brandt, of ThriveMD in Edwards, offers this procedure as an outpatient treatment, which takes approximately 1-3 hours and doesn’t require general anesthesia. This technique allows Dr. Brandt to easily maneuver through tissue for better body sculpting, less bruising and faster recovery time. Why wait? It’s bathing suit season!

With the current wave of electronicbased acts rising high, especially in Colorado, creating a one-of-a-kind live experience is crucial to any group’s success. BoomBox pulls this off by adding a spectacular light show to go along with the music. “(The light show) is just as important,” Godchaux said. “We want it to be beautiful to the eyes, beautiful to the ears and the whole atmosphere to be a high-caliber experience.” Also signature to BoomBox is Godchaux’s bright fuzzy hat, which he said was part of the inspiration for forming the group. “We’d never played live before and it was my birthday and I saw a fuzzy hat in the window,” Godchaux said. “The clouds parted and a ray of light landed on the hat. Something (inside me) said, ‘Well this thing BoomBox that you guys want to do, (this hat) is part of the uniform. That’s what you’re going to wear whether you like it or not.”

‘GO OUT THERE AND SINK OR SWIM’ Godchaux’s hat may be fuzzy, but the band can also get pretty funky. That’s how local DJ Ramona Wouters, who goes by simply Ramona, described BoomBox. Ramona toured with BoomBox and will be one of the acts opening up for them this weekend. Ramona likes how the duo doesn’t just attract those who are heavily into the electronic scene. “They do everything live, not mixing records or anything,” Ramona said. “They’re not an electronic band because of the live influence, it’s a mixture. (Because of this) they appeal to a large variety of crowds.” Music has coalesced to a point where genres do little to define just exactly what

you’re going to hear at any given live show. For BoomBox this is a good thing as they only like to describe their music in one way: “Rock ‘n roll”. “To me rock ‘n’ roll is (about being) without a net,” Godchaux said. “It’s full freedom of expression regardless of what the norm is ... For me and Russ, we’re approaching it like Rock ‘n’ Roll. We don’t have setlists and just go out there and sink or swim.”

Something (inside me) said, ‘Well this thing BoomBox that you guys want to do, (this hat) is part of the uniform. That’s what you’re going to wear whether you like it or not.

Zion Godchaux BoomBox singer and songwriter

Rock ‘n’ roll is their credo, but don’t expect any tight leather pants or shiny shirts from the group anytime soon. “We’re not out to be rock stars,” Godchaux said. “We’re more like public servants. We love the people, and we love our audience. There’s healing that happens (at our shows) and it only happens because we try to put ourselves out of the way so that can come through.” With a soul and rock ‘n’ roll past, a show that strives to live in the present and electronic beats that focus on music’s future, it’s unclear just exactly what fans can expect to experience with BoomBox this weekend. No need to worry though because just like the audience, the band won’t know what they’re going to play until they step on stage either.

Although she started her career as a photographer, Anke Schofield is now best known for paintings that convey things no one could ever capture in a picture. Filled with wonder and imagination, Schofield’s new work focuses on not what we can see, but what we could envision if we stopped limiting ourselves to that which already exists. “The whole (idea) is based on living through a child’s eyes,” Schofield said. “If you were a child and had dreams, what would you want to see? What would you like life to look like?” For a child, anything is possible. A young girl can run alongside horses or ride a zebra. A dog can perch atop a house, or a house can sit perfectly balanced atop a dog. “A girl can’t actually ride a deer, but in a child’s mind she can,” explains Schofield when discussing one of her new pieces, “Deer Ride,” that depicts a child riding the hoofed animal while carrying a house on a string behind her. Schofield’s work explores what we often deem impossible, but the young

Motet, Particle). The songs have a rich, deep vibe that sounds as if five or six people are performing, rather than just the three men. That’s thanks to the MIDI bass, Basso said, which he was introduced to a few years back while doing a project called The Royal Peeps. “I learned a lot of studio tools that I wanted to bring to the live arena. As a result, the way I use the MIDI bass is I throw that signal into the computer, and I will, in some cases, have six or seven different sounds being triggered by the bass at once and they blend together with my regular analog bass signal, which then brings a new tone, a new sound.

“I got so excited in the studio when I heard it, I wanted to try it live,” he said. “It just gives a huge, layered, rich, thick palate of sound coming out of one little instrument.” In the future, Basso is looking forward to using the tool to add visual effects, triggered by the bass, to screen behind the band as they perform live. He’s in the process of connecting with film directors who can “help us out with these crazy, farout ideas.” The album, which is $10, will be available for purchase at the show and on iTunes by next week and available via the band’s Facebook page in the near future.

Because she creates her canvases using multiple layers of paint, Schofield is always creating more than one piece at a time. “If I just had one painting, I’d have to sit there and watch it dry,” Schofield said. This way of thinking is exactly what Schofield is trying to get at with her art. No child would wait around watching paint dry. Instead they’d chose to start painting something else, take a nap on an antelope or put on a pair of wings because they felt like flying for a while. Viewing Schofield’s work reminds us that just because we haven’t seen it for our own eyes, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

80 attend brunch on the terrace of Splendido at Chateau in Beaver Creek By Chris Shull Vail Valley Scenery

DALLAS — Patrons of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Bravo! Vail celebrated the start of the 2013 summer season of Bravo! Vail on June 30 at Splendido at the Chateau in Beaver Creek. Hosted by Vicki Rippeto and Northern Trust, the elegant brunch was the ideal opportunity for Colorado patrons to mix and mingle with patrons and friends from Dallas, many of whom have homes in the Vail-Beaver Creek area.

A LONG, SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP Representing the successful, longstanding partnership between the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Bravo! Vail were Blaine L. Nelson, the chairman of the Dallas Symphony Board of Governors, and his wife, Patti; Jonathan Martin, the Dallas Symphony president and CEO, and his wife, Amy; and Jim Palermo, the executive director of Bravo! Vail. Against a backdrop of sunny skies and mountain views, conversation and conviviality centered around the Dallas Symphony and its celebrated music director, Jaap van Zweden, and the exciting beginning of the 26th season of Bravo! Vail.

Acquaintances old and new sipped cocktails on the terrace before moving inside for a sumptuous mid-day meal, including Alaskan crab and celery root remoulade, smoked salmon and caramelized onion tart with chive creme fraiche, rosemary and garlic roast leg of lamb with pomegranate jus and Shelley’s Louisiana shrimp and grits.

THE GUESTS Among the 80 guests enjoying the splendid company and relaxing atmosphere were hostess Vicki Rippeto, John Jaran, Laura and Mark Flagg, Linda and Mitch Hart, Marilyn Augur, Arlene and John Dayton, Carol and Jeff Heller, Shirley and Bill McIntyre, Alice and Dick Bass, and Nita and John Ford.

THE PERFORMANCES The Dallas Symphony’s 2013 residency at the 26th Bravo! Vail began June 28 at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater with a near sold-out performance of jazz favorites led by conductor Jeff Tyzik presented in conjunction with Bravo! Vail Jazz Foundation. That was followed by three concerts led by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, one featuring Bravo! Vail Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott and pianist Alessio Bax. Local librarians recommend several great summer reads Daily staff report newsroom@vaildaily.com

Summertime is glorious and much too short to spend on the wrong book. The librarians at the Eagle Valley Library District have sifted through hundreds of this summer’s best and most anticipated reads and recommend the following titles for your precious time in the hammock this weekend. Is your favorite on the list? Stop by the libraries and let us know what you recommend! “We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves,” by Karen Joy Fowler Recommended by: Cortni O’Brien “To say too much about the latest novel by Karen Joy Fowler would be to spoil the surprise, but curious readers will get a major hint from the cover art. I was captivated by this novel. Main character Rosemary Cooke’s father was a psychologist in the 1970s. He conducted an experiment on his own children that changed the family dynamic forever. Now in her 30s, Rosemary reflects back on her early childhood to uncover what went wrong and why she is the only one of three Cooke children not ‘behind bars.’”

“Life after Life,” by Kate Atkinson Recommended by: Diane Levin “Life after Life by Kate Atkinson is my favorite book of the year so far. Kate Atkinson is a wonderful writer and in ‘Life after Life’ gives us a glimpse of the power of a writer’s creativity. Starting with her birth, the novel takes Ursula Todd through multiple iterations of her life, set against the epic backdrop of England before and during World War II. The sense of history is powerful but the thought provoking aspect of the novel is the idea that one life can have so many possibilities. Where will the road take you?” “Bad Monkey,” by Carl Hiaasen Recommended by: Julie Richards “I always look forward to anything new by Carl Hiaasen, whether it is a book for children or adults. His latest, ‘Bad Monkey,’ is laugh-out-loud funny and does not disappoint. Filled with Hiaasen’s signature wacky characters and bizarre events, he still gets across his

message of the awful way in which Florida (and the Bahamas as well) has been and continues to be degraded, without being didactic. I listened to this book, narrated by Arte Johnson, and while he could have better differentiated the voices of the varied characters, he did a great job of voicing the irony and sarcasm of the story. Hiaasen has written many, many books that do have a few characters in common, but can be read in any order.” “And the Mountains Echoed,” by Khaled Hosseini Recommended by: Michelle Marx “I’m excited to read Khaled Hosseini’s newest novel, ‘And the Mountains Echoed,’ which came out in May. This is a story of families and family ties that extends from Afghanistan to Paris, San Francisco, and Greece. I loved Hosseini’s other novels, ‘The Kite Runner’ and ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ and imagine that his third effort will also prove that he is a master storyteller.” “Red Spectres: Russian Gothic Tales from the 20th Century,” selected and translated by Muireann Maguire Recommended by: Jaci Spuhler “Gothic fiction of the Soviet era ... who knew? These tales have not been available for public consumption and yet the authors, Bryusov, Bulgakov, Grin, Krzhizhanovksy and Chayanov, are all names recognized by those familiar with Russian literature of the era. In this genre, gothic fiction, these authors deal with ghosts, insanity, obsession and the realities of a new political order and industrialization. It’s available for checkout as soon as I finish!” “The Returned,” by Jason Mott Recommended by: Anne Johnson “I cannot wait to read this highly anticipated debut by Jason Mott. All over the world people’s loved ones are returning from

beyond. No one understands why this is happening. Is it a miracle or a sign of the end times? As more and more are ‘returned,’ chaos erupts around the globe and everyone is forced to navigate this new reality and to question what it means to be human. This novel is scheduled to be released in August.” “A Hundred Summers,” by Beatriz Williams Recommended by: Amy Gornikiewicz “Readers who enjoy period pieces rich with atmosphere, details and drama may find this year’s perfect beach read in ‘A Hundred Summers’ by Beatriz Williams. The novel opens on Memorial Day, 1938, in the seaside community of Seaview, Rhode Island. Lily Dane and her family have just arrived from Manhattan for their annual summer visit. As individual characters are forced into a storm of their own emotions and collective pasts, Seaview is about to face a storm of its own in the form of the hurricane that will become known as the Long Island Express. Filled with scandal, deception and family secrets A Hundred Summers is the perfect novel to get lost in on a summer’s day. Williams tackles the issues of class and privilege as well as anti-Semitism with a true understanding of the era.” “Z: a Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald,” by Therese Fowler Recommended by: Robyn Bryant “Z is a historical fiction piece that depicts the relationship of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, who were quite the infamous literary, celebrity couple in the roaring 20s. The story begins with their meeting and courtship when Zelda Sayre is a young and rebellious southern belle in Montgomery, Alabama. Told in first person account by Zelda, the reader gets a feel for what their relationship may have been like. These two were both headstrong and lively, which made for a passionate yet turbulent relationship. Other notable authors are portrayed, as well as an interesting focus on the friendship between Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway.”

Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice — taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption. (2:35) PG-13. WHITE HOUSE DOWN | In “White House Down,” Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by

a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country. (2:25) PG-13. DESPICABLE ME 2 | Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s worldwide blockbuster, “Despicable Me,” delighted audiences around the globe in 2010, grossing more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history. In summer 2013, get ready for more minion madness in “Despicable Me 2.” Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy animated adventure featuring the return of Gru (Steve Carell), the girls, the unpredictably hilarious minions ... and a host of new and outrageously funny characters. LONDON — Amy Winehouse seemed to live in public, but her fans never knew the private person. An exhibition at London’s Jewish Museum aims to reveal an intimate side to a troubled star who was also, in the words of her older brother Alex, “simply a little Jewish kid from North London with a big talent.” “Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait” brings together items from the late singer’s London childhood, her stage-school years and her short but stratospheric career in music — from her first guitar to a posthumous Grammy Award. By the time she died AMY WINEHOUSE in 2011 at the age of 27, Winehouse was a larger-than-life figure whose battles with drugs and alcohol, splashed across front pages around the world, sometimes seemed to overshadow her talent. The exhibition shows that she was also a young woman who loved music, loved London and loved her family. “It’s a story that people don’t know about Amy, her family story,” museum chief executive Abigail Morris said Tuesday. “You can forget there’s a person behind the hype.” Morris said the show was a natural for the Jewish Museum. Winehouse came from a close-knit Jewish family, and the museum is in Camden, the neighborhood where the singer lived for most of her adult life — where she saw gigs and played them, browsed in second-hand record stores and drank in pubs. It’s also the neighborhood where she died of accidental alcohol poisoning at her home in July 2011. Assembled with help from Alex Winehouse and his wife Riva, the exhibition grew from the Winehouse family’s offer to donate one of Amy’s dresses. It expanded into a celebration of her Jewish roots, her family and her home city. “The more we talked the more we realized the exhibition wasn’t going to be about her dresses and her clothes,” said curator Elizabeth Selby — though there are several outfits on display, from the shimmery blue dress Winehouse wore at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival to the tracksuits she preferred at home. “It’s about her roots and her family life.” The exhibition, which opens Wednesday and runs to Sept. 15, traces the singer’s family tree back to great-great-grandfather Harris Winehouse.
