atna has had a long and glorious past. It has been a center of power for ages. Spread along the banks of the holy river Ganga, this capital city of many empires of bygone eras; it has been a witness to various important events. It rose to eminence during the Mauryan period, and was known as Pataliputra for a long time. Even today, various major offices, state assembly, branch offices of many central government offices, headquarters of many government departments are located in the state capital. Comparatively speaking, it is better-developed than the other major cities of Bihar. Patna has been the witness of rise and fall of empires, places of historical and tourist interests dot the areas in and around the capital. It has been

an old center for learning and education. Patna has so many things to attract tourists of all tastes and choices. The Golghar (Gol = Round, Ghar=House) is an important historical building located in the heart of the city. Built by the English regime as a storehouse or granary during the famine, this semi-circular building was ordered in 1784 by Warren Hastings, the then Governor-General of India, looks very much like a cup turned upside down on a saucer. This amazing, pillar-less structure is able to hold 140000 tons of grains. The Golghar has a staircase that spirals around the building where people are able to go all the way to the top. In addition, Buddha Smriti Park, Takht Sri Patna Sahib are places of great historical interests. The

sprawling Buddha Smriti Park is situated in Frazer Road, Patna, Bihar on the premises of the historical Bankipore Jail; a section of the old jail-wall and a watch tower has been preserved for its symbolic and historical importance. This beautiful multipurpose park had been developed by the State Government to commemorate the 2554th birth anniversary of the Lord Buddha. This park was inaugurated by His Holiness Dalai Lama on 27th May, 2010 on the occasion of Buddha Poornima amid the chants of hymns and in presence many dignitaries, including Governor and Chief Minister of the State. The remains of the 80-pillared hall of the Mauryan period at Kumhrar also states the importance this ancient city has enjoyed in its long period of existence.

B

ihar is a land of varied cultures, festivals, beliefs and religions. Each state of the country has some festivals that are a unique part of its cultural heritage and are different from the rest. People of this state love to celebrate festivals and feel it is an opportunity to get together with friends and family. Today, we bring you a list of festivals from the Land of Biharis- Bihar! Chhatth Puja The most famous festival of Bihar is Chhatth Puja which is celebrated twice in a year, once in March and the other in November .This is probably the most famous festival native to this state. When one hears about Chhatth Puja, one is is instantly reminded

of Bihar. This actually is an ancient Hindu festival which is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and takes place 6 days after Diwali. During this festival, the person observing Chhatth, also known as Parvati, observes a fast from dawn to dusk which concludes with sweets This fast is followed by another fast for 36 hours till the final day, when puja starts at the river bank, before sunrise. You can witness thousands of devotees along the holy river Ganges, during this time. Chhatth Puja, in itself is an experience, which will let you witness spirituality, devotion and harmony in its true sense. Shravani Mela This festival is observed

every during the month of Shravan (July-August) The devotees who take part, known as Kanwarias, wear saffron-coloured clothes and collect water from the sacred Ghats at Sultanganj. They then walk barefoot on the 108-km long stretch to Deogarh to bathe the sacred Shivalinga. This festival draws thousands of people from all over the country every year. Sonepur Cattle Fair The Sonepur Cattle fair is the Asia’s largest cattle fair which takes place in the dusty little town of Sonepur in Bihar. This fair has had a long history along with several regional myths associated. It is held on Kartik Purnima that is the first full moon after the festival of Diwali. Traditionally, this fair was famous for its animal trade, where hundreds of people

converged to buy, sell, or exchange their animals here. Scores of different animals used to be brought in from around the country and sold here, including elephants, camel, sheep, dogs, and birds. Due to various bans and prohitions regarding sale of wildlife, the sale of wild animals here, has gone down surely, making it more of a cattle or pet fair now. Apart from this, varied handicrafts and handloom stalls are also put up, along with the magic shows, swings, rides and folk dances. This fair

attracts a large number of foreign tourists every year. Makar Sankranti Mela The Makar Sankranti Mela is held every year at Rajgir in the month of January. The devotees make flower offerings to the deities in the temple and take a dip in the holy water. Another site associated with this festival is the Mandar Hills in the Banka district. According to legends, a great Asura once threatened the gods. The Lord Vishnu cut off the Asura’s head and piled up the body under the weight of the Mandar hill. The famous panchjanya – the sankh (conch shell) used in the Mahabharat war is believed to have been found here on the hills. This makes it a rather famous festival of the state. Pitrapaksha Mela This mela is held in Gaya each year, in the month of September. In this fair, people from all parts of the country come to worship their ancestors as part of the Shraddha ritual. This is a mandatory Hindu ritual which is believed to bring salvation to the departed. This tradition goes back to Buddha, who is believed to have performed the

first pindan here. Rajgir Mahotsav Rajgir is a city in Nalanda district in the state of Bihar. The city of Rajgir was the first capital of the kingdom of Magadha. Rajgir Mahotsav is held every year by the Department of Tourism, Bihar. It is a colourful festival of dance and music. A complete serene atmosphere is created here with the instrumental music, devotional songs, opera, folk dance, ballet and other dance and art forms. This festival held in the last week of October attracts a large number of tourists and performing artists from around the world. Buddha Jayanti The Buddha Jayanti is celebrated during the month of May, on the Baisakh Purnima (full moon day). It is believed that Buddha was born, enlightened and passed away on the same full moon day. Thus, the festival Buddha Jayanti came to be celebrated. This is especially celebrated in the town Bodh Gaya and Rajgir, two places having imptant Buddhist connections.
