The hospital was built for the exclusive use of railroad workers who became sick or injured while working on the first transcontinental rail line from Sacramento over the Sierras to Promontory, Territory of Utah.

Kaiser’s hospital roots began when Henry J. The Kaiser Pemanente of today grew out of the Richmond experience.

So, with Kaiser’s plans to build a full service hospital on the Rail Yard site, heath care Downtown has come full circle!

Eskaton’s No Falls League Shares Moves for a Healthy Stance Residents from Eskaton’s two Roseville communities teamed up to promote National Fall Prevention Month this September. Led by their coach, Christy Barry, an Eskaton Fitness and Wellness Coordinator, the No Falls League developed a video to encourage people to exercise. These men and women, ages 67 to 95 years old, demonstrate low impact exercises. Regardless of age, these seniors prove exercise can be fun and easy for anyone.

The moves Team Eskaton demonstrate on the football field are designed to strengthen muscles, improve coordination and reduce one’s risk of falling by creating better balance.

“Gaining better balance is essential for the aging population,” says Coach Barry. “One in three people over the age of 65 will fall this year. In the Sacramento region alone that can be well over 100,000 people.” Barry teaches a ‘Balance and Breathing’ class weekly at Eskaton Village Roseville. The training starts by building confidence as the brain relearns how to move. As the body regains its balance capabilities, the individual feels success and moves on to more complicated mobility actions. “Once the brain remembers how to move and balance, the body reacts accordingly,” she says.

Barry’s students have improved their balance with excellent results. One woman who hiked a narrow switchback trail said the side steps she’d done in class, plus the exercises for good posture, helped her complete the hike with confidence. Another woman on a cruise ship used the weight shifting exercises to navigate the ocean’s movement when she was standing still. Others told their coach of maintaining balance after missing a step because exercising regularly improved their reaction time.

Eskaton created the No Falls Video with Team Eskaton to give seniors a place to start improving their balance in a fun way. In addition to the ‘how to’ video, Eskaton is offering fall prevention classes open to the public.

A CULTURE OF COMPASSION Young tech entrepreneurs embrace senior care Senior care is an industry rapidly evolving through new technology. From wearable health sensors that can detect vital signs like temperature and heart rate to safety monitoring devices, innovators in the field are searching for more efficient and compassionate ways to manage senior care.

When 23-year-old Sameer Dhar founded his company Sensassure to create a sensor to detect incontinence, he wanted to connect with a partner that could help gather the research data needed to move the product from prototype to finished product.

Dhar found that connection with Carlton Senior Living.

Jennifer Bayard, Carlton Senior Living’s senior vice president of clinical operations, met Dhar at an industry conference and said developing a research partnership with Sensassure was a natural fit.

“It’s two companies coming together that have the same outlook on putting people first, with the highest standards of dignity and respect,” Bayard said. “Within three minutes of talking, we were comfortable opening our doors to the research team.”

Dhar and five other Sensassure employees –– all Canadian residents –– resided in a Carlton Senior Living community for months while developing a prototype of

their incontinence sensor. Living in this environment allowed the Sensassure team to work side-by-side with Carlton Senior Living caregivers, shadowing them to learn more about the challenges of managing incontinence in senior care. In turn, Sensassure employees have used the feedback from Carlton Senior Living residents and caregivers to iterate the design of the sensor so it is practical to use.

“For this product to transform the lives of the people we are trying to impact, the care team has to love it and want to use it,” Dhar said. “I think the integrated approach we are taking, working with caregivers as partners, is helping us design a product that will be more successful once it goes to market.”

Currently, caregivers managing incontinence need to check residents frequently, often disrupting their sleep in the middle of the night. The sensor Dhar and his team are developing will allow caregivers to manage incontinence more effectively by knowing exactly when a resident needs to be changed.

Dhar said his time at Carlton Senior Living has made an impact on him and his mission to create a product to improve incontinence management.

“The whole experience has been incredible,” Dhar said. “When I came to Carlton

According to a pilot study conducted by Sensassure, the reusable sensor is able to reduce the time a resident spends in wet undergarments by 73 percent and decrease the amount of unnecessary sleep interruptions by 81 percent. The current design attaches to a hook and loop fastener and rests on the outside of undergarments, detecting wetness through clothing and transmitting the information wirelessly to caregivers. Thanks in part to the feedback

from caregivers at Carlton Senior Living, Sensassure is now in the final stages of developing its prototype.

Sensassure was recently accepted into the Highway1 program, a San Francisco-based hardware accelerator helping the company develop its product. Dhar is hoping to make the sensor available for commercial use next year.
