What Happens When You Renovate Your Home Without a Permit? Renovating your home offers you a chance to increase your property’s value while improving your own quality of life while you’re living there. But while relatively minor renovations, like replacing flooring or countertops, can generally be done without obtaining a permit from your local municipality, major projects typically require a permit prior to getting started, or at some point along the way. If you don’t obtain the necessary permits for a home renovation and someone in your local government office becomes aware of that fact, you could get slapped with a serious fine. How might you get caught? Well, if you decide to sell your home after renovating it, you’ll often need a certificate (completion or occupancy) to complete that sale. To obtain it, you’ll need someone from your local government office to inspect your home and confirm the work was done correctly. If that someone notices your renovations, but also sees that you never went through the proper channels to get a permit, then you could be on the hook for a hefty fine. Similarly, it’s not uncommon for homes to get
reassessed -- sometimes this happens annually. This process involves a property assessor coming to your home and inspecting its features and condition. If your assessment mentions up-grades that require a permit -- a permit you never obtained -- that’s another easy way to get caught. Now, let’s go back to the scenario of wanting to sell your home. Not only might you be fined if you’re caught having made renovations without a permit, but you also might fail to obtain the certificate you need to complete that transaction (or at least fail to obtain it in a timely fashion). The result? A lost opportunity to sell your home to a willing buyer. And consider this: If damage occurs to your home as a result of renovations for which you never obtained a permit, you may be out of luck when you try to file a claim with your homeowners insurance company. Illegal renovations could easily negate the benefits you’d otherwise be entitled to.

What’s the purpose behind a leap year?

February is known for many things, one of which is being the shortest month of the year. Many people do not give much thought to whether or not February has 28 or 29 days. But February bears the unique distinction of being the only month on the calendar that does not always have the same number of days. Known as a “leap day,” the 29th day of February helps to synchronize the calendar to Earth’s orbit. According to EarthSky, which reports on astronomy and other cosmos-related information, Earth’s orbit around the sun takes approximately 365.25 days. That extra .25 creates a need for a leap year every four years; otherwise, the calendar, which is faster than the actual solar year), would drift from what is actually occurring with the orbit. After four years, it would be off by one day, or 25 days after 100 years. If no corrections were made to the calendar, the seasons might become misaligned. After 300 years, January 1 would arrive in autumn. Julius Caesar, at the advice of Sosigenes, an Alexandrian astronomer, was responsible for adding a leap day to February to compensate for Earth’s rotation after the original Roman calendar kept slipping out of alignment. During his reign, Caesar first implemented a 445-day calendar year in 46 BCE to bring the calendar back into alignment. Roman officials called it annus confusionis. To limit future headaches, the work-around was to simply add a leap day to February once every four years. The Julian
calendar wasn’t exact to the solar year, but it was much closer than the previous Roman calendar. Each person with memory loss, and his or her family, experience different challenges and needs, which vary at different times during their journey. Revere Court Memory Care is a state-of-the-art community providing quality of life to persons with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and to their family who care for them. We also understand the importance of education and support for those who have a loved one with memory loss, this is why we offer a full spectrum of workshops, seminars & support groups on a weekly and monthly basis. Revere Court Day Club From our home-made food from the Alzheimer’s Cook book to the color schemes that we have chosen to activities that stimulate-everything we do has been studied and designed specifically for someone dealing with memory loss. Revere Court Day Club program is designed for those who need assistance and supervision while their family members are at work or are in need of a respite for a day. Nestled on 3 1/2 acres of serine gardens and walk ways our participants engage in physical and recreational activities, enjoy meals and snacks, and socialize with friends throughout the day in a comfortable and spacious clubhouse setting. Activities include but are not limited to exercise, sing-a-long, trivia, arts & crafts, and musical entertainment. Revere Court is also Music & Memory Certified & we are involved with Artisan Mind-an art program designed for those with a memory impairment. Families can choose the time that works in their schedule, day club hours are 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday.
